So, in the absence of a keyboard, those three buttons must be used to select the emoji from an on-screen keyboard I assume. (The one advantage I see of the toh tamagotchis over the irl ones is that they have larger screen resolution: my screenshot shows almost 10 emojis fitting on the screen. So if you had an onscreen keyboard, you'd need only 3 rows for them to fit, which would indeed fit on that screen). There aren't an entire four buttons to make up a directional pad (up, down, left, right), because, again, there are only 3 buttons. So you would have to have something like this instead: button A to go right only, button B to go down only, button C to input selected emoji. Then for the nav stuff relating to the message in general: hold A + B to go back to previous menu/screen, hold B + C to send message, hold A + B + C to clear message, maybe. Once button A/B reach the edge of the screen, it wraps around. So imagine this: you're Luz at the beginning of Labyrinth Runners, wanting to send that very important message to Amity about how you learned a lot of bad stuff in Belos' mind and there's the day of unity and not to scare Hunter away if you see him: first you must scroll to the emoji representing L. Maybe it's a-a-a-a-a-b-c. Then E: b-b-c. A: b-a-a-a-c. Then R-N-E-D. Then the next word, then the entire rest of your message. That is a lot of button presses o_o... We do see Luz in Eclipse Lake typing out the "u r pretty" message in real time, it took her only a few seconds, so either there's some WAYYY faster way of inputting emojis that I missed (where, AGAIN, there's only 3 buttons, so I doubt it), or Luz is incredibly fast at this and is a god at tamagotchi text messaging and should enter the texting speedrunning olympics sometime.
