opening with irulan's narration to mirror her notes in the openings of the chapters of the book. oh yeah baby. i ate that right up

watching paul get close with the fremen,,,,, fucking hell that hurts. dune really is a tragedy at the end of the day huh. they go from reluctant allies to friends but the whole time you know the switch will happen any moment now and they will be devotees and he will be messiah and that gap between them will never be as small as it is out in the sand. huddled in those tents. sharing drinks and laughs. im not doing ok

this especially hurts with chani. their love is so genuine and pure and she wears blue for him (which by the way sticks out so much more with how muted the colors of the rest of the movie are... i could talk about this all day) but she can see what he is becoming and he's trying to avoid it for her so hard but there's no avoiding fate. LORD ABOVE!!!!

i loveeee jessica being the manipulator thats pulling all the strings, urging paul towards becoming messiah. rebecca ferguson is such a talented actress she really understands the character so well. also as a hashtag certified alia atreides enjoyer her scheming with her unborn fetus might be the most unhinged thing ever but thats also so fucking funny aka its as dune as it gets. dune is WEIRD and im glad theyre not shying away from that. thank u denis

arrakis looks so much more beautiful in this movie like theres defo been some changes with how its framed and presented it feels so much grander and idk just ??? what it makes me think is that we're not seeing arrakis, we're finally seeing dune. we're seeing the land as the fremen see it as paul becomes one of them. i might be looking too much into it but who cares. god i love this movie

but yes more on the fremen in the first section of the movie. i like how there's this cluster of non-believers almost?? its a nice breath of fresh air. its hard to believe every single person would be just devoted to the prophecy and it adds some depth.

i will say the one thing i didnt like is the way stilgar is characterized?? i dont think he was so blindly devoted to paul in the books, and definitely not alia and leto ii after him as the atreides line went on. he's always been a source of small doubt towards paul but i think they're moving that element of him onto chani, so i think i can let it slide. i'd like to see him question alia more in the future though.

the scene where paul was named muad'dib and usul??? god it was so cute which made it so heart wrenching. all the fremen coming together and welcoming him into their lives. as a brother. as a friend. only for him to turn around and make them all bow before him. ohhhhh i cant do this

the music playing as he fights being as fucking deranged as he is. chaotic and weird and unsettling. just. oh my god feyd had such a presence from the moment he showed up and he did not lose it for a single second. you could feel him LOOMING over the movie the whole time just as he looms over the whole book from his very first scene. oh my goddddd oh my godd

GEIDI PRIME. THE ARENA. THAT MASSIVE HARKONNEN PALACE. oh my god. once more. that sense of scale. the harkonnens love to flaunt their wealth so ofc they have huge fuck off arenas and castles where everything and everyone feels so SMALL in comparison.

dont even get me started on the black and white. the way it accents those coal black teeth and mouths. the way it makes everything look so much more inhuman and clinical and PERFECT because harkonnen power is so absolute and ruthless.

and the way the baron sits so so high above watching the fighting. literally impossible to picture his elevation above his people above the rest of the universe. the way feyd looks to him for approval after every movement. even as his uncle is trying to kill him they exchange those little looks and feyd knows hes getting his chance to show off while the baron gives him his "gift" what a fucked up family what the hell

speaking of fucked up family! wow! they are SO fucked up! there is something seriously strange being hinted at with feyd and the baron! feyd making his own brother bow and kiss his boot! those constant threats of death against rabban as if theyre nothing! this family is capital f FUCKED up. they hurt each other as much as they hurt everyone around them. theyre made of violence and blood and they could never show each other kindness because they dont know such a thing

what can i say about the feyd/margot scenes that hasnt been said already. like wow just unpack the boy's trauma like that. use him and then throw him to the wolves. once again the bene gesserit make it so clear this is THEIR empire and THEIR bloodlines and THEIR messiah. too bad jessica doesnt see that collective "ours" and instead settles for "mine" when it comes to the messiah

i already talked so much about feyd's presence so just another small note. that scene in sietch tabr. he is a MONSTER and i am EATING IT UP

i cant even begin to explain. how much it fucked me up. when paul took the water of life. i knew thats where we were going. i knew it was unavoidable. and yet still. when chani bent over him and screamed at everyone for making him follow this prophecy. when she was forced to shed tears to save his life. when she got him back only to realize she lost him and he wasnt the person she loved anymore. it broke me

chani's utter hatred for the prophecy and what paul is becoming added to it so much. i know some people are unhappy with how much shes been changed from the books but i think its elevated her character and all these scenes so much. and oh my god does zendaya DELIVER when the spotlight is on her. i never doubted her for a moment but all those changes to chani really allowed to let her shine. thats that euphoria acting coming out baby !!!!

what makes dune's weird concepts so easy to take in once you get into the book is all that internal monologue that really leads you through these complex concepts slowly. and yet in a few shots and a few lines of dialogue timothee chalamet somehow manages to express the idea of "i just learned the secrets of the fucking universe and im about to start a holy war" ???? HOW DO YOU EVEN DO THIS???? HOW ARE YOU THIS TALENTED???? OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! IT WAS A FEW LOOKS A FEW MOVENTS JUST THE RIGHT TONE OF VOICE AND THATS HIM!!! THATS HIM BABY!!!! also the way in that scene gurney is hesitant about it all until paul proclaims himself the duke of arrakis. and suddenly gurney has house atreides again and he doesnt care what chani does anymore. hes a follower to paul just as everyone else in that room. nothing changes. fuck me man i cant do this anymore

have i mentioned yet im so excited for chani in the next movie. her arc is so interesting. children of dune is defo not happening with the way chani has been set up so i doubt we'll see leto ii and ghanima but. lets hope we still get all the cool stuff wit alia at least. and maybe chani can be the one who leads the charge against her

okay so. the way theres no music. no fancy cuts no slow mo no over the top effects. its just the slashing of the blades and those BEAUTIFUL shadowed shots with the setting sun in the background. this really is the sun setting on the peaceful universe. just pain and suffering ahead marked with the blood spilled from the two who were meant to produce the messiah but who both got thrown off this path by the greed and selfishness of their forefathers. guys im normal about paul and feyd. definitely. i definitely have very normal thoughts about how they are foils and yet two sides of the same coin. yes guys

paul making the emperor kiss his ring is already such an insane fucking scene and it translated to the screen so well. amazing performances all around

i didnt talk much about florence pugh's irulan but she really didnt have much time to shine. im excited to see where she goes next and i definitely think shes a great fit but i need to see more of her to really be able to say more

i will say this. the way chani, irulan and jessica are the only ones who dont kneel for paul. the three most important women in his life who give him his power, everything he has. jessica made him and she made him the messiah. chani opened her life up to him, helped him become and in turn control the fremen, and she shed her tears for him and fulfilled her role in the prophecy against her wishes. irulan is his path to the throne, his key to being emperor. and none of them bow before him because why would they bow before a power they are responsible for, a power they own, a power they gave?

but for chani its different ofc. she also refuses to bow because she despises everything paul stands for.

oh my god i could say so much about the last scene being chani. not paul reveling in his victory. paul leaves for his next bloodshed and chani is left behind crying for the person she loves who she knows is gone. crying for her people, again enslaved. crying those same tears that brought the messiah back into this world.

theres a lot to be said about the role of gender in dune and how it hangs over every facet of this world but thats a whole separate analysis post to be had so ill just throw it down here in this little point

another thing chani does very well in the movies is she really makes paul's villainy explicitly clear. SO many people read dune and completely misunderstand it and walk away from it concluding its a "white savior narrative" and nothing more which. yes!! yes it is!!!! but thats not a good thing!!!! its never stated to be a good thing!!!!

this movie is not gonna let you misunderstand the message of the story no matter how blind you try to be to it. paul is not a good guy. hes never been the good guy. hes the protagonist, but hes not the hero. and chani allows that to translate from book to movie very well. have i mentioned yet i love movie chani

chani fills in the holes left behind by the narration and internal monologues of the book and, bonus points, she holds the people who dont understand what dune is about by the hand and tells them explicitly "PAUL IS A BAD GUY!!! DONT IDOLIZE PAUL!!!! DONT WALK AWAY FROM DUNE THINKING ITS PRAISING PAUL'S ACTIONS!!!"

You & my partner have gotten me on the Martlet x The Roba pairing train so I gotta ask; was there an 'O h.' moment for either of them when they had the realization?

i think they would both have an “o h” moment. i think martlet would have it during the period between clover dying and the barrier being broken. the crew spends a lot of time together, broken with grief, and struggling to support themselves. so martlet travels from snowdin to the dunes a LOT. suddenly her big ass house is too big, shes so separated from her friends so far away. she has dalv, but he wasnt there for clovers death and didnt see what she did. ceroba knows the feeling well. so i think martlet spends a lot of time with ceroba at her house; doesnt move in, because she cant bear to let go of her house, but spends a lot of time there.

you would expect martlet to have a big exciting moment of realization but i think she would just. realize it on a random day. and THEN she would freak out and immediately avoid ceroba and talk to starlo. who tries his best to stop martlet from panicking and mitigate damages but they both realize how stricken and traumatized ceroba still is from chujin and kanako and clover so. they cant really do anything about it. so unfortunately now starlo is subjected to martlets ramblings and lovestricken conversations like shes a teenager wirh a first crush

CEROBA HOWEVER. DOES get a big “aw fuck” moment. when they get to the surface she asks martlet to move in with her; it just makes sense, now that they’ve spent so much time together. might as well. so martlet moves in and just fits right in, taking care of kanako and ceroba when she needs it, being handy, and just generally being a good roommate! and then ceroba watches martlet teach kanako how to woodwork, both of them struggling to read martlets blueprints and stumbling around trying to find a single nail and she cant help but laugh and realize how happy she is. how she never thought she would see her family happy like this again after chujin. and then she realizes that.. she feels the same way about martlet as she did chujin. she sees a partner (platonic at the time, anyways) helping raise a child and live in her house and show affection to anyone and everyone, even her, and she realizes she loves martlet

and then she ALSO dumps all this info to starlo who sits there like “my god my dumbass bisexual friends dont want to talk to each other”

ok so before anything i gotta state a few things so no one on here acts a fool: this is MY opinion as a brown practicing muslim whos like halfway thru the first book and has seen the villeneuve movie like 4 times. so,

as i said i cant rly talk about the book(s) cause i havent finished it/them but ive seen the movie. here is my general feeling about it : it felt good to me. TO ME. yes my standards are awfully and scarily low but im so fucking tired of seeing us portrayed as tyrans, terrorists, Bad Desert Guys, that Dune felt GOOD. im an african melting pot of several countries and ethnicities but im mainly north african and specifically from the edge of the Sahara, i have touareg roots. ive heard some people say the fremen are a bastardized version of us, but i PERSONALLY didnt think so. it was a shame that stilgar was played by javier bardem tho, wouldve been great if they casted an african or middle eastern actor instead.

now all that isnt even an answer to ur question im sorry skfhkd but i just felt like saying that it felt. good. now more specifically about the way some parts of dune were heavily inspired by islam and islamic language.

to me, again, TO ME. it also felt good. i didnt see a problem with it, becausz it wasnt mocked or misused or anything, like. most religions have the concept of messiah. most religions have prophecies. again, dune didnt mock any religious or spiritual concept. there ARE layers to this but to me none of them felt insulting. when we see in the movie fremen pilgrims praying and meditating for a few seconds, i felt so warm bc. its me!!! its what i do!!! and its on screen!!! and its not used as a way to degrade or ridicule the people practicing it!!!!!

i'll finish this by saying that even if i havent finished reading the books....isn't dune supposed to be criticism about white people invading the middle east for oil anyway???? like. the fremen arent the bad guys. theyre PAINTED by the harkonnen as the bad guys. yes YES i know paul atreides is a white savior but tbfh i couldnt care less like this fucking book was written in the 60s lmao

anyway i hope at least some of this makes sense bc im rly tired and also i almost broke my ankle today so im in pain rn lmao but yea thats a general summary of my feelings about all that. it probably doesnt cover everything i have to say but thats all for now

i don't really know what i've been up to, but here's a life update:

ate gi (tiger's sister) made spaghetti twice this month. ngayon lang ako nagka lakas ng loob mag request ng ulam. i usually just wait. her spaghetti is everything. most of her cooking is everything.

i bought books a couple of weeks ako and the ones i ordered arrived a couple days ago. i bought the invisible life of addue larue, aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe, the starless sea, and the cruel prince.

i just finished reading diary of an oxygen thief just a couple days ago. i put down for 2 months because of how bored i got. and yeah, i hated it.

i haven't watched any new movies lately. some out of boredom and just to past the time. not because i wanted to see a new movie.

i started watching seinfeld but didn't enjoy the first 10 episodes so i stopped watching it

i'm on season 2 of 'you'. watching it with tiger. joe goldberg just triggers me cause he reminds me of my ex. maybe my ex could have killed me if he wanted to. i don't know.

got a sweater from brandy melville last week. it's the 'tate' sweater. the one going all around tiktok. i hate that i gave in. but i love having it.

gave tiger a taylor swift crash course one day and he listened and maybe enjoyed it? i can never tell. he did like my tears ricochet. thought it hurt like hell.

downloaded dune but can't bring myself to watch it yet.

had that interview with scout about y2k fashion and why it's such a trend. i remember feeling nervous as hell during it even if it only lasted 15 minutes. (i talked a lot)

i thought i did so badly in that interview. but when i watched it, it wasn't so bad

i went thrifting a couple of days ago. it helped. i felt i had some peace. felt like meditation to me.

been talking to cath a lot about life again lately. and realized that there were things we couldn't tell other people but told each other because we experienced the same pain together. that's how i know we'd do anything for each other. that's how i know she's more than just a best friend to me. i'd die for her. she's family.

been on tiktok more lately. instagram is just there for photos but i don't want to care so much for instagram.

been thinking a lot again about where i come from and who i am. i don't get heavy breakdowns anymore. not lately, at least. i just get sad. and i don't push it away anymore. i let it sit as long as it wants and as long as i let it.

but everything is closed once my shift starts and i turn into a completely different person when working.

a tiktok i took got around 13k views. i hated that tiktok and meant to do it again. tiger laughed at me for it. it was funny.

i watched downsizing. i didnt enjoy it as much as i thought i would

i watched the little rascals. i liked it a lot.

i watched ladybugs. i didnt like the sexist jokes.

i just finished aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe. i finished it while it rained really hard. i get why people read when it rains now.

Chapter 2: Beach House Blues

Kakyion's eyes had widened, it had been a while since he heard that name he sat up and slightly gasped, that damn cowboy caused so much trouble for the group, he nearly put Avdol out of commision and stole their car after dealing with Enya.

You then became breathless, your hands just barely gripping the steering wheel all those memories came flooding back to you, every last one of them, your vision went hazy and the tears formed in your eyes. You closed your eyes and shook your head to get rid of them, you lost grip of the steering wheel and you held your face in your hands.

"Y/N!" Kakyoin tried to get your attention, but it was no use.

Just then an oncoming truck was coming your way and because you lost your grip of the wheel your car was heading straight for it. Kakyoin had to act now and fast. 

"Hierophant Green!" He called out his stand and he appeared beside him.

Then Hierophant Green started to unravel his lower body becoming a bunch of strong ropes, he nodded to his master knowing exactly what's at stake. The ropes quickly slithered down Kakyoin's legs and upwards towards the bottom of the wheel, gripping it tightly and at that moment and with such force Hierophant tugged with all his might. The car swiftly brushed the truck leaving a few scuffs on both indicator lights of the vehicles. Kakyion sighed in relief knowing that the vehicles did not collide and called back his stand. 

You snapped back to reality and gasped with such a force you realised what happened, you grip the wheel once again and you slammed on the brakes. Shaking, you place your hands to your mouth and begin to let out a few tears. Kakyoin felt awful that his question led to you being so distraught. He turned to you and closed his eyes and brought you closer to his chest, pulling you in for a hug. His arm rested on your back as you buried your face into his chest, his other arm gently rubbed your head to calm you down. You held onto his jacket and softly cried into him. 

"Shh it's okay Y/N. I'm so sorry I pressed you to talk when you weren't ready." Kakyoin softly spoke. 

You couldn't even form a sentence but you nodded into his chest, then you took a deep breath and broke away from the hug, You looked forward and placed your hands on the wheel. He looked at you with his lavender orbs, feeling guilty, but mostly angry at that damn cowboy. He thought to himself how could such a horrible person cause you so much pain, he could see in the little time you've been with him that you were a kind and thoughtful person. 

Thankfully the men in the back were still asleep and you started to drive again, Joseph took a wrong turn down a one way street and by the time you started to move again he caught up with you. Thank goodness you didn't have to explain to the others what had happened. 

"We are almost there" You softly spoke "Just under this bridge we will be by the beach front." You gave a soft smile at Kakyion you felt calm again.

He smiled at you back and he glanced and saw the beautiful  sight, a long open beach with crystal clear water shimmering in the sun's reflection. You indicated to the left after the bridge you stopped at the T- Junction and looked into the mirror and pointed left to tell Joseph to turn left now. You drove along the side of the road by the beach, with the sand brushing against your tires. There it was just in sight of the beach house, The Bombay Cottage. 

You sighed with relief as you pulled up to the side of the beach house and parked your car, you waited for Joseph to park his car just in front of the steps of the beach house. You turn your attention to Kakyion and you place a hand on his shoulder and pat him a few times. 

"Thank you for helping me back there, I don't know what would've happened if I didn't snap back to reality" You smile more. 

He held your hand and smiled back softly "I'm just glad you are safe, but most importantly thank you for getting us here smoothly and safely" 

You smile softly while looking at his warm smile but then you remember about the gents in the back. You then leaned passed him and tapped Avdol's knee to wake him up.

"Mr Avdol? Mr Avdol, we are here, wake up." You tapped him more to wake him up.

Avdol rubbed his eyes and gave a big yawn and stretched his arms and realised they had made it to the beach house. "Oh my goodness how long was I out for?" 

Kakyion put up 2 fingers and smirked "2 hours." 

Avdol blinked slowly "Hm that's a first for me, I'm normally awake on our car journeys, Y/N got to say your driving with so smooth you made this fortune teller drift off." He ended with his signature hearty laugh again.

Just then Joseph marched up to the back door of your car and swung it opened and pulled the still sleeping Polnareff out the seat.

"I saw that cheek you pulled earlier, how dare you!" Joseph gritted his teeth and he didn't forget about the Coca Cola bottles, Polnareff had a rude awakening and realised what he had done. 

You all looked with a sheepish expression as you all exited the car and Polnareff clasped his hands and begged the older man forgiveness while in his grip. "No Mr Joestar, I'm sorry please dont hurt me, it was a joke I swear, come on we are friends, NOOOOOOOO!"

Polnareff wriggled and escaped his grip and ran around the back of the beach house and along the beach and Joseph chased him down. "Get back here!" 

Jotaro joined you all on the porch and you quickly looked away from him and fumbled in your pocket for the keys, you unlocked the door and you smiled at the gents behind you.

"Welcome to the Bombay Cottage, this is one of many houses that my good friend of the family,  Tamsin owns. To be honest this is my favourite from all the ones he owns." You sigh happily and you carried on "Here we have the porch there's a small bench so if you need a breather or a smoke then please use it as your hearts content." You open the door and hold it open for the men. "This is the main lobby" You point to the staircase "Upstairs are the bedrooms I'll show them shortly, oh through here," You carry on walking through the long hallway and reached three doors at the end of the path, "In here to the right is the living room, there's books, TV, radio and a gorgeous  view of the beach to keep you entertained..." You open the door to show them the room and you see from the giant window Joseph and Polnareff rolling around in the sand trying to tickle each other. 

"No stop, you know I'm ticklish!" Joseph tried to grab Polnareff 

"Not as much as I am, NOO! Don't you dare!" Polnareff squealed as he gripped onto Joseph's arm. 

Everyone else looking in the room had a deadpan expression and watched them trying to stand up but slipped on wet sand and fell face first. 

Jotaro stood in front of you and moved you out the room with his chest and slammed the door behind him "Moving on, what's this room here?" He pointed to the door in the middle.

"Jotaro no need to be rude, sorry about him." Kakyoin gave his friend a disapproving shrug  leaned in closer to you and whispered "He doesn't like silly antics, it pisses him off." 

"Oh I see now" You look at Jotaro as he places his hands in his pocket and rolls his eyes at the loud screaming from the men outside. The wave came back to shore and soaked them completely. 

"This is the downstairs bathroom." You open the door and show them a small bathroom, the toilet behind the door,  the sink and shower on the far side of the small room. You close the door and then open the door to the left and show them an open planned kitchen with a dining table. 

Avdol and Kakyion's eyes lit up in awe they had never seen such a fancy kitchen before you smile at their expressions and you lead them all back to the stairs in the main lobby, just then Joseph and Polnareff walked up the steps of the porch and opened the door and nearly stepped in the house completely drenched and covered in wet sand. 

Avdol pointed at them and ushered them to the dune buggy "Don't you dare step foot in this lovely home. Come on." He led them to the buggy and got the suitcases out from both of the cars and rummaged about Joseph's and Polnareff's luggage and threw them a fresh set of clothes. 

"You can get changed in the buggy, don't you dare bring a spec of sand into this home. Y/N has gone out her way for us, it's the least you can do." Avdol folded his arms and gave both his friends a serious look before smiling at them and giving a soft wave before joining you all upstairs. On his way back to the house he picked up the remaining suitcases and hauled them up the stairs. 

You had finished showing Jotaro and Kakyion the guest bedrooms and the only rooms remaining at the end of the hallway,  your bedroom and the main bathroom. 

You pointed at your room but didn't open it "This is my bedroom not a lot to see to be honest. and right here is the main bathroom." 

You opened the main bathroom door and the men were greeted to a gold and blue bathroom with a giant bath in the middle with the toilet and sink by the window. Avdol peeked in while you showed the others the bathroom. 

"Say Y/N you don't mind if I had a quick bath do you?" Avdol asked so politely 

"Of course you can. Oh!" You reached for the cupboard in the corner of the bathroom and pulled out a few towels for him and placed them on the towel rack by the bath, the others left the room and as you took your leave Avdol stopped you. 

He placed his hands on your shoulders and looked at your face. You look at him with a questionable expression.

"Is everything okay Y/N?" He asked quietly

"Yes of course" You softly smile

"Then why are your eyes red and puffy" He questioned you and  your eyes widened, you were caught lying.

Just as you were about the answer Polnareff came waltzing  in and took notice of the nice bathroom

"O la la~ Ah tres bien, tres bi-'' His eyes focused on you in Avdol's soft grasp and his eyes widen "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH~" 

"Polnareff it's not what you think!" He got flustered and he let go of your shoulders. 

You quickly scrambled out the room, also feeling flustered,  you rushed out in such a hurry you bumped into Kakyion's back. 

"Oww" You rub your nose. 

"Y/N what happened!" Kakyion turned around and Jotaro started to walk down the stairs

"Avdol figured out I was crying from earlier and-" You explained to Kakyion. 

"GET OUT OF HERE! I'M TAKING A NICE RELAXING BATH!" Avdol went into a rage at Polnareff's constant teasing and threw a sponge at his hair.

Half an hour later and everyone was at the dining table about to enjoy some spaghetti al nero di seppia, Joseph was insistent on making dinner and no matter how many times you stopped him, he said no, you couldn't stop him either, so you gave in and enjoyed having dinner made for you. At the dinner table you sat in the middle with Joseph to your right and Kakyoin to your left sat across you was Jotaro on the left Polnareff in the middle.

Avdol walked in just as Joseph was plating dinner, everyone including yourself was in shock to see the Egyptain man with his long hair tied back in a messy low ponytail. He took his seat next to Polnareff and he grinned

"Hey Avdol you should have your hair in that style more often it might impress the ladies" The Frenchman raised his eyebrows at him while giving you a wink. Kakyion facepalmed while watching the exchange, while you sipped on some Coca cola, Jotaro rolled his eyes and looked away.

Avdol slowly turned to him and pointed at him "I told you it was a misunderstanding!" 

Polnareff flinched and raised his hands to him "Okay okay I'm sorry I was only teasing... geez!" 

Joseph sat down and you all began to eat and you all loved the amazing taste, the tall haired man enjoyed it so much he wolfed it down and sat back with a grin on his face. You all finished eating about 10 minutes or later and that's when clasped your hands and cleared your throat, it was time. 

Kakyoin placed his hand on your back and nodded to you " It's okay, tell them what you told me."

You had a heavy sigh and you looked down to your hands.

"I don't even know where to even start with this so I guess I'll start with... with.. Hol Horse...." You calmly spoke even though your body started shaking.

"What?!" Joseph's eyes widened

"HOL HORSE! THAT BASTARD!" Polnareff gritted his teeth 

Avdol and Jotaro didn't say much yet they both looked at you with concern and leaned in to find out more. 

"Well it all started when....." You began to tell them how it all started

2 months ago you had travelled to Cyprus with Tamsin and wanted to explore not only the best sights in Cyprus but also visit Egypt.

You took a ferry over and when you arrived you saw how beautiful and how built up the capital city of Cairo looked and that's when you bumped into the long haired man. 

"Oh sorry miss I didn't mean to bump into ya like that, names Hol Horse its a pleasure" he helped you up.

"Oh it's okay no trouble at all my name is Y/N" You shyly respond

"Ah what a lovely name for such a beauty, say I just feel awful about knocking you over like that, wanna come with me and get some coffee?" he asked with such confidence. 

You nod a lot and couldn't get away with how handsome he was. 

You had coffee with him and just before saying his goodbyes he offered to meet up again the same time the following day. This went on for several days and before you knew it you and him hit it off very well. You couldn't believe such a handsome guy took in such an interest  in you. He told you all about his life and why he was here in Egypt and you too did the same explaining about visiting your old family friend Tamsin in Cyprus. 

Then came that fateful day. 

"Hey darling, I want you to meet my boss Lord Dio. I think he'll really like you, if you want to join our little gang he will give you riches and anything you desire." He wrapped his arm around your waist and pulled you close to his body. He stared into your eyes and placed a small peck on your cheek. 

"You've told me so much of Dio it would be so wonderful to meet him. Oh you did say he gave you a special ability didn't he?" You asked with your eyes beaming with joy. 

"That's right babe you can't see it but he gave me this sweet ability to use a powerful gun where I can control the bullets" He smirked and held you closer to him

"Wow that's so cool darling being blessed by Dio with such an amazing ability" You clasped your hands in his and walked to the entrance of the beautiful white building hidden in the older districts of Cairo. 

You walked alongside him walking down a long and narrow hallway and then walked up a long spiral staircase it was dark and poorly lit only seeing so much in front of you. As you walked further into the mansion you saw other members of the gang glare at you, grin and even woof whistle at you. Hol Horse glared at the ones who whistled at you and clenched his fist. They scurried off at the sight of his fist. 

 You both walked into the library and that's where the man your beloved Hol Horse spoke of  sat just before you, you couldn't see much of him apart he had long blonde hair and huge muscles. 

"Lord Dio I brought her to meet you. I hope she becomes useful in our plan." Hol Horse kneeled before him and he stepped down off his seat and walked towards you 

He placed his cold large hand on your face and slowly caressed it. You froze on the spot at his touch, he licked his lips and clicked his fingers. 

"Hmm, she IS a beautiful woman Hol Horse." His voice was so deep and chilling it sent shivers down your spine. You look over to your boyfriend and he didn't once stop kneeling for his master. 

Dio brought you closer to his body and his red eyes scanned every part of you taking in all your features. 

"Enya bring it now, she's perfect!" Dio with a deep husked growled  at the old lady by the doorway. 

Your eyes widened on her return. She held an arrow and presented it to Dio, he licked the arrow and he smirked " Your expression is beautiful, but now you belong to me DIO!" 

He gripped your arm as you tried to squirm away and with one tug you fell back into his well toned body he drove the arrow into your heart. Everything went hazy, your vision went blank and your body slumped to the floor. Hol Horse rushed over to you and held you in his arms. 

"Lord Dio do you think she will be accepted?" He asked with his voice shaky with what he witnessed. 

He shrugged and returned to his seat and watched over you.

Just as you got half way through your story, night had fallen the moon shining brightly over the beach house. Just then at that moment Polnareff accidently let out a small burp which ruined the mood everyone glared at his disgusting act and Jotaro slammed his hands down on the table. The whole time you'd been sobbing reliving the memory of when you first met Hol Horse. 

"Im going for a smoke..." he gritted his teeth.

Everyone watched him leave the room and then turned their attention to the Frenchman who covered his mouth but then also stood up. 

" I uh better go check up on him....." He walked out the room in shame. 

Joseph walked behind you and wrapped his arms around your shoulders, he looked down at you with a caring but sadden eyes, you brought your left hand to your mouth, your breathing got heavy like earlier, tears ran down your face. Kakyion gripped your right hand to let you know he was here. Avdol gritted his teeth and shook his head in disbelief, his warm eyes looking over at you. He felt awful that you experienced that traumatic event with Dio, he knew too well how frightening he truly is.

Just then you all heard Polnarerff scream in pain you jolted up and you brushed past everyone and ran towards the porch. 

"Y/N wait come back!" Joseph called for you but you carried on.

"Y/N stop!" Kakyion called to you and then chased after you 

Avdol walked by Joseph and looked both confused and worried with how you acted. 

You reached outside and you saw Jotaro having a cigarette and Polnareff holding his finger in pain. 

"Oww Jotaro what you go and burn my finger like that huh?" He glared at his friend.

Jotaro glared at him and huffed "Dont be so fucking rude next time!" 

*Cue the start of Roundabout theme* 

You brushed past Jotaro and you placed your hands on Polnareff, then all of a sudden your hands became encased with a marble shield and you began to heal his wounds from the burn. 

Jotaros eyes widened "What the hell! She's a stand user?!"

Polnareff smiled that the pain went away, you smiled back at him, but at that moment you lost your vision and collapsed down the stairs. The men stood there in shock. It all happened all too fast for them to react. 

Kakyion caught up to you and his eyes widened seeing you collapsed on the steps he ran down, kneeled in front of you and picked you up in his arms. 

He glared back to Polnareff and gritted his teeth. He walked up the steps of the porch, he gave him the most disapproving glare and walked in the house and held you closer to him as he made his way up to your bedroom.

Did someone ask for Tracy's racing golf carts? No? Oh well...

Day 70 of Isolation on Tracy Island.

We all slept in late this morning, well, those of us that actually got to bed did, when we finally got up around lunch time we found Gordon and Scott passed out on the couches and Brains asleep at the kitchen table with a cold cup of coffee still clutched in his hand like a teddy bear.

I sent John, Virg, Grandma, Kayo and Jeff out to the pool and sorted breakfast myself, being careful not to wake the sleeping beauties.

Once breakfast was done we quietly made our way down to the hangar to see what progress the boys had made over night and to check that no sabotage had happened to the girl golf while we were sleeping.

It looked like the boys had managed to finish it at some point, or as close to, but we still had no idea why Gordon had wanted them or what he was planning on doing with them. We all drifted off to our own activities. I had the sudden and undeniable urge to bake miniature cupcakes and since Brains had apparently awoken and wandered off at some point, I had free use of the kitchen. I left them on the side for anyone who wanted to eat them and tracked John down to indulge in my favorite pastime, sitting really close to him and just staring at him until he gives up trying to concentrate on whatever he's doing to pay attention to me.

We were chilling out in the reading nook upstairs, watching Virgil finish his painting while I read out funny isolation tweets when Gordon appeared in the lounge.

“Hey everyone, it’s ready!” he yelled at the top of his lungs, waking Scott who flailed and rolled off the couch in shock.

“What’s ready?” he grumbled, rubbing his elbow where it had whacked the floor.

“The race course!”

His meaning dawned on us all at the same second and we groaned.

Gordon had us all assemble outside Two’s cliff hangar entrance where he’d pushed the two golf carts out and had them lined up ready.

“Girls vs boys?” Kayo and I confirmed.

“Yep, one driver, one co-pilot, drag race down the runway, sharp left hand turn down that ramp , onto the beach for an anything goes, flat out race. First one around the island via the beach wins,” Gordon announced much to my horror.

“Hang on a second,”I interrupted him. “I don’t trust you guys, we didn't modify ours at all but we know you were all trying to ‘improve’ yours.”

Gordon and Brains looked a little shifty but it was Scott that finally admitted the truth.

“We gave up on any improvements and started again and followed the instructions.”

I bit my lip, trying not to laugh but Kayo wasn't as generous and laughed in their faces. It took her a few minutes to calm down enough to straighten up and agree to their terms.

“You can drive,” I told her. “I’m not good with new things.” I heard John snort because he remembered having to teach me to drive my car after Brains tricked it out. Never again.

“Yeah, I wouldn't have let you anyway,” she told me. At least we knew where we stood.

Gordon wanted to drive since it was his idea with Scott as his co-pilot since Virgil had been voted as too heavy that he might unbalance the cart. Poor chonky thing.

We suited up with helmets and elbow and knee pads, the only safety gear we needed apparently, I would have preferred a full armoured body suit but these lot are dare devils and care nothing for safety beyond the basics. I swear, I once heard Scott quote ‘protect your melon, anything else is fine’.

I sent up a prayer to anyone that might actually be dumb enough to listen that they spare me from a broken neck by idiot family and got in beside Kayo. Apparently golf carts do not come with seat belts because obviously YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO RACE THEM!

“Hold on tight,” she grinned like an idiot, clearly loving life at that moment.

“Five! Four! Three! Two! One!” Jeff counted down and then Grandma blew a whistle. We were off!

Kayo slammed her foot down on the accelerator and we shot forward at a whopping five mph, slowly climbing to ten.

We were quickly running out of runway but she showed no sign of slowing down for the turn that was coming up.

“Kay...maybe you should sl-”

“LEAN!” she yelled and I did as I was told, throwing my weight and upper body sideways with her. We lifted up on two wheels and slid onto the ramp. I screamed. Why must she terrify me like this? We had only just started! I gripped on to the frame for dear life and tried not to scream again as we rocketed down the ramp with the boys close to our bumper and clattered onto the sand.

Thankfully the sand slowled us down a little and I was able to catch my breath, hopefully not to fill my lungs so I could scream in terror again.

She had a careless way of driving, it was like she saw every bump, rock and patch of seaweed as a personal challenge, driving at them like she was in a video game and expecting me to grab coins along the way. Well I can tell you now, I wasn't letting go until this was all over.

I heard Gordon and Scott whooping like loons , almost level beside us. I risked a glance over and they were radiating pure crazy, but in a good way, clearly enjoying themselves and having a fabulous time. Weirdos. Only this lot could enjoy terrifying near death experiences as much. What happened to quiet days at home? What happened to sanity?

“Lockdown happened,” Kayo answered. Huh, guess I said that out loud.

She screeched us around another corner, taking one hand off the handle bars to grab my arm and haul me sideways when I didn't instinctively know to move.

“You could pay attention,” she huffed.

“I’m trying not to watch my life flashing before my eyes,” I snapped back, but that just made her laugh. That’s one thing I love about her, we can snipe at each other and get mouthy but we never take it seriously.

I did pay a little attention though, enough to see the boys hit what they thought was a sand dune and turned out to be a sand covered rock. Their cart came to a bone crunching halt and they both catapulted out.

“Wait, they might be hurt,” I yelled but she didn't even look back.

“Losers, they’ll be fine.”

She was right, they got straight back up, hauled the cart upright and got right back in, tearing off after us. They were zooming on the wonk as it looked like one of their front wheels was buckled and pointing the wrong way but at least they were moving. Now I didnt feel so bad about the fact that we were about to kick their butts.

We rounded another curve, managing three wheels this time which was a definite improvement. She was enjoying herself far too much, laughing like a Disney villain as she flung the poor cart around like she was in a race car.

We were rocking along at a speedy 12 mph when our wheel caught on some seaweed which wrapped around it and locked it up tight. We jumped out and were still yanking it free when the boys zoomed past us, yelling out taunting insults .

Kayo snatched up the last of the weed and threw it away, already back in the cart.

“Hurry up!” she hollered and I’d barely got one buttcheek on the seat before she was off. I flailed and managed to hang on to the frame and plant myself more firmly.

We sped after them and managed to catch up, hindered as they were by their buckled wheel and were neck and neck as we curved around the last bend, bumped over another sand dune and took an unscheduled dip in the sea, the water spraying up as we noooomed along but nothing was going to stop us now!

The boys were about a foot ahead of us and trying for that last burst of speed on the home stretch, the second ramp that would take us back onto the runway was in sight. We both bumped up on to it at the same time and felt it wobble. We had two choices, freeze or go faster, apparently freezing is not in the International Rescue vocabulary as both Gordon and Kayo slammed their feet down and squeezed another 2 mph out of the struggling engines.

We got up the ramp, crashing into each other as we tried to turn at the same time. There was a scuffle where Kayo yelled at me to kick them and stupidly I did actually try, all that did was give Scott a chance to lean over, grab my foot and wiggle it while I screamed.

We got straight and untangled and I hauled myself back into the seat for what felt like the hundredth time in ten minutes as we hit the home stretch, barrelling down the runway. Our audience dived out of the way as we screeched to a halt.

“Who won?” Gordon demanded to know.

“Oh, sorry, were we supposed to be judging this?” Jeff asked. “We weren’t paying attention.”

The boys and Kayo groaned, demanding a rematch. No way was I going through all that again so I gave up my seat to Virgil, I was done with the entire thing. All I wanted was a cup of coffee and a lie down. These guys would be the death of me.

To do list if i was immortal

-Read all the books. Also. Have a collection of eyeglasses and magnifying glasses: im looking at you, Time Enough At Last

-when i say all i mean ALL the books. Im gonna get one of each book ever that people are willing to give me. Just learning about books i didnt know existed will take a significant amount of time.

-create a place to store all the books as i go. Perhaps i shall commission a bunker of some sort with many stories (pun not intended at first but i saw it and went Nice)

-yes i know about the owl spirit thing from ATLA in the desert library and YES that episode made me more distressed than any other episode those kids didnt apprECIATE WHAT THEY WERE SEEING that professor guy is the only one i truly 100% respect in that show

-actually im going to get TWO copies of every book ever, one is the private library because im immortal and planning on my retirement from humanity i deserve it. The other is a public library. Any duplicate copies i put in the public library. If a book is the only known one in existence i have copies made (with permission from the holder) so o can have one for me and one to make public. I figure if i live a few hundred years i can save up the money to like invest in something that gives me that kind of disposable income, to keep a massive library staffed and funded. I would build a network, to ship books out to people who needed to borrow one, or to fly scholars in to do their research there. Id spend years digitizing the whole thing as well so it could be accessed from everywhere. We would collaborate with sites like wikipedia, and donate to them but not merge with them because i dont want to build a monopoly on information in case someone manages to take control of the foundation from me

The most damaged copies of my collection would be my personal ones. The ones with endearing marginalia, and the best smelling coffee stains. I would try to limit myself to a few dozen favorites and the rest i would reluctantly lend out if people requested books with marginalia specifically. I would let it be known that that was an option and that i would send books with marginalia if it would make reading more fun, and id send them off with a little note from me tucked inside, and days or weeks or years - sometimes hundreds of them - later, id find my own notes used as bookmarks or crumpled in bags of donated books, and i would feel heavy with wistful nostalgia every time, and maybe i would cry but it would be a cathartic cry, for the love of humanity and for a love of the moments of my own life. Finding a note would remind me how i myself had changed since i wrote it, every time, it would make me reflect for a moment on how my life had led up to this. And the notes would have a prompt and a bit of space at the bottom to write a response, even just a "hello" or a "your name was here" or an opinion on the book. I would keep the notes in their books, if they were still together, and get a new copy for the public library. I would keep my notes. As a record of my own history. And as a record of the people who had shared it.

-also i would finally get around to the dune sequels which ive heard are terrible

Day 13 - Bush to Beach

5 December 2018 

Kms Travelled: 400kms South / 6hrs 

Inhassoro - Paindane 

It’s the beginning of the end. 

Today we  began the great trek back to Maputo. 

We had heard about the amazing reef at Paindane Beach from fellow travellers, so decided to make that our first stop south. All was going great until we got to the proverbial fork in the road. Left or right? Note to self, or anyone reading, never take directions from a drunkard. Even if they seem local. 

Fast forward to an hour later and we were hopelessly lost. So lost, the road we were on didn’t even show up on google satellite images. So lost, we had to deflate our tyres to 0.8 bar. So lost, we were getting strange looks from the villagers. So lost, I had to get out the car because I couldn’t stand the tension of having to drive up a 40’ angle sand dune (that we JUUUUUST didnt make.. maybe If matt didn’t have to stop to let me out he would’ve had the right momentum - we will never know). So lost, I took my chances with getting blisters on my feet from the 40 degree sand rather than drive any further in the car. 

We made it. Only to find out that every Matriculant from Pretoria was on holiday at Mozam Rush. At our resort. 🙈 Oh boy. Definitely not what we had signed up for. We had pictured turquoise ocean views while camping on the beach. Instead we got drunk jocks and their cherries, who had taken over the place. It was hot. We were lost for so long and then we had to face not only that but locals trying to sell us everything under the sun, including their services to help unpack the car. It was a bit of a nightmare. We were looking for peace and relaxation and it was definitely not what we had found at Paindane. Would’ve been a different story if we had arrived just two days later, but what are you gonna do. 

Our campsite was pretty cool at least. We had a huge thatch casita to set our tent up under with our own bathroom. After chips and rolls - the only veg thing going at the restaurant, it was Netflix in the tent. Hoping the sound of beer pong on the beach would not travel up to our camping spot. 

And when I found a snake in our bathroom. That’s when I knew it was time to be done with this day.

I was just in a car accident in which I was not at fault and the other driver was ticketed. I live in Florida and while my car was insured with PIP coverage under my fathers name. I was exempt from the coverage. I had to go to the hospital to get CT scans of my brain and neck area as well as multiple xrays. The Great Dying: Happiness Comes on Day Five

My family has come to Hawaii.

Hawaii, like an aging model, is still gorgeousjust sometimes in a fragile, wasted way.

My parents were here a long time ago; they came on their honeymoon, back in the Old World times. They bought a hotel-and-airfare package to Honolulu. They went scuba diving in the coral reefs and touched real rays and even one dolphin, they said.

Of course thats not an option anymore, but you can snorkel all you like in fiberglass reefs stocked with colorful farmed parrotfish and now and then a robot shark.

I love the parrotfishs bulgy, fat lips.

Back then, they ate at restaurants with views of sparkling aqua-blue bays; they went to luaus and drank fancy drinks with paper umbrellas. They took small trips to the other islands, even the one that used to be a leper colony.

These days Honolulu and most of Oahu are seawall and salty aquifers and long, long blocks of abandoned buildings.

But they wanted Hawaii anyway. They were nostalgic. So this time we came to the Big Island, where were staying in a hotel with a view of Mauna Kea. Ive seen pictures of it from way back when, white at the top and majestic. Theres never snow anymore, even at 14,000 feet, but the volcano still looms.

Its just the four of us: my mother and my father, my little brother, and me. Its the four of us here for our last week.

A week is the period the companies usually suggest, once you finalize dates. Any longer and customers can get morbid, or even, if they decide to refuse their pharma, hysterical. And then the whole thing collapses. Any shorter and theres not enough time for good-byes.

My parents arent even that old. My mother had me in her late sixties, and two years later she had Samand though theyre vigorous and healthy on a physical level, on an emotional level theyve decided theyre done.

This would be harder without the training we did at home, without the pharma regimen they have us on. Even with those tools its still intense and vibrant, and everything seems inflected with meaning. Cursed with meaning, almost. Meaning attaches itself to everyday objectstoothbrushes, swimsuits, dangly earrings. Here in the hotel suite, I look at these normal items and everything seems like it portends something.

We just got here and already were on the brink of tears at times, or at least my mother and I are. My father and Sam are trying to act stoic, though now and then I catch one of their hands or a bottom lip trembling.

Meanwhile the edges of objects glow, blur, and fade as I look at them. They all seem permeable or aliveas though the aliveness of objects is there to compensate for my parents being ready to die.

I dont think its the pharma thats doing it, either. Sam and I arent even on a full pill regimen yet. On Day Four well have the option of a powerful tranquilizing blend: Thats Good-Bye Day. They like the contract holders to have their memories intact to say good-bye, because the fifth days pharmathe last pharmacauses forgetfulness. It brings on a long-term memory loss that wipes all memories associated with trauma, so they go out happy.

Happiness comes on Day Five.

Its early afternoon. My parents and my brother have gone out for a walk, and from the balcony of our suite I can see them strolling, their light clothes flapping in the breeze off the ocean, on a trail along the high jagged bluffs.

They carry umbrellas that protect them from the sun but also hide their faces from me. They could be anyone.

The bluffs were well engineered and have been planted to look wild, in a fake way. There are scrubby bushes from the desert, South American cacti and Chinese beach roses (according to the brochure) and even, now and then, dune grasses and sand. They hide the concrete seawall beneath the artificial bluffs so that you dont have to remember where you are or whenso you can almost forget youre not in Old Hawaii. Forget, in other words, that youre living at the tiny tail end of the fire-breathing dragon of our history.

The company my parents chose is a midsize outfit that likes to boast how it hires locals. So our rep, when it came down to it, was a lady my mother had once played golf with.

My mother isnt the golf type at all, by the way. She barely knows how to play, but one time she competed in a small-golf game for charityits mostly small golf these days, unless you have huge money to throw away on travel to one of the big courses, plus water-use finesand because she had a good sense of humor, at least till recently, she was basically the comic relief, I think.

But that one day was when she first met the rep, Jean.

Jean showed up at our apartment a couple of months ago, in the hour before dinnertime when we usually hang out together and talk about our day and stuff. The four of us were drinking cocktails in the living room. Being 15, Sam doesnt drink that much yet, but my mother had offered him a junior can of wheat beer.

And there she was at the doora compact, middle-aged woman from the 10th floor, frosted hair, braided wedge heels. Id seen her in the elevator once or twice.

This is Jean, said my mother softly. Jean, these are our children, Nat and Sam.

My name is Natalie, but I go by Nat.

The woman smiled and sat down and looked at us with a gentle but still oddly businesslike expression.

Your parents thought it might be good to have me here is how she started in.

Sam looked up right away. Hed been reading off his device.

Youre service, he said flatly.

I do work with a service company, said Jean.

She didnt miss a beat and didnt seem awkward; she had a forthright attitude without being domineering.

Youre the counselor, or whatever they call them, said Sam.

Im coordinating the personal aspect of outreach, conceded Jean.

On the contract we purchased recently, put in my mother, soft-voiced. Mine and your fathers.

Sam picked up his beer and drank most of the rest of it, a flush rising on his skin.

I had been sitting at the bay window, looking out over the garden. Our apartment complex was nice, with trees and water features and little striped chipmunks, because chipmunks always poll higher than squirrels.

Anyway, I liked to drink and take in the view.

But then, without really noticing my own movement, I turned so I was facing the room, my back against the view of the trees. In the pit of my stomach was a heavy new stone. At the same time my arms and legs felt light and liquid, like the bones in them had softened.

Why didnt you tell me? was the thing I said.

Were telling you now, sweetheart, said my mother, coming to sit beside me on the ledge. She put one arm around my shoulders. Its all according to schedule. The timing is what they recommend.

They encourage the parents not to get emotive when theyre disclosing. It only makes things worse. So my mother sat there next to me, her arm on my shoulders light, keeping a kind of professional attitude. With her free hand, she shook the cubes in her glass and raised it to drink.

My father stood facing us all with his tumbler of whiskey. His face bore a kind, bemused expression, as it used to when Sam or I would cry and he had no idea how to stop it.

You can still take it back, said Sam, with a kind of hurt urgency. Please, MomDad! Take it back!

Honey, said my mother, we dont want to. Or maybe a better way to say it is that we weve lived for you two ever since the tipping point, sweetheart. Youve been whats kept us going.

The tipping point was when we couldnt do anything more to stop the planets runaway warming. There were feedback loops in the climate system, like the albedo effect and water vapor increase in the atmosphere and plankton die-off in the oceans. So even though wed stopped emitting so much carbon and methane, we couldnt stop the seas or the temperature from rising. At least for a few centuries.

Both of you are practically grown up, said my mother. And when it comes right down to it, you dont really need usnot in the day-to-day sense. You think you do, maybe. But we know deep down that you can take care of yourselves. And you will.

You cant say what were feeling, said Sam, shaking his head. Only what you are.

It helps, for peace of mind, said Jean to Sam, if you keep argumentation for later. During this encounter, this time of disclosure, weve found that what allows for peacefulness is just listening.

Fuck listening! said Sam.

He was bright redlike someone had dealt him two slaps, one on each cheek.

And really, went on Jean calmly, as though he hadnt said anything, theres no rush here. Theres plenty of time. Remember, all contracts are voidable right up until the end. So theres absolutely nothing to make you nervous.

She didnt mention what we all knew: that theres a stiff financial penalty for last-minute cancellations. She didnt need to. My parents knew a couple whod canceled just five hours before their contract was about to start, but at that point it cost like 90 percent of the full price. And they ended up buying a new contract a couple of months later. That meant less money for the survivorsa tainted legacy.

But youre doing so well, begged Sam, turning to my mother.

I felt frozen.

Youre doing really well, youve got your moods well stabilized lately, he added.

No, yeah, son, said my father. Well were not too bad off. Were not personally complaining. We feel so lucky, compared to lots of people. No question. And you knowits not any one big thing. You know? Its not a dramatic situation, theres no particular, exact catalyst here. But we feel like, for one, heywhy not quit while were still ahead? You know, leave while weve got our health. And theres still no impairment. We all saw how Mamie got after she passed 100.

Youll be all right. You have such great resilience, added my mother. Wewe think youre very strong.

Oh please, said Sam.

Try to see it from our point of view, my father said. When we were young, there were still big animals swimming all over the oceans. The rivers and the forests had all this life in them, not just the squirrels and pigeons. You could go anywhere in the worldwe drove a gas-burning car when we were young. We flew on huge airplanes. Whenever we wanted to!

My parents keep thinking, somehow, that one day well hear about how different the world used to be and for the first time well understand them.

But isnt the world always different for the kids than it was for the parents? Sure, maybe its more different now. We get it.

But this is the only world we ever knew.

For Old World people like us, you know, said my mother, weve had as much as we can take of seeing everything go away. And we dont think we can bear towhat happens if, if it keeps going how we think it will.

Of course, we hope and pray it wont, said my father staunchly, tossing back the last of his whiskey. We figure, go early, while everythingswhile theres still hope. You know.

But I knew what he wasnt saying: They couldnt stand to see our future. They couldnt stand to watch us struggle.

Its never an easy decision, put in Jean.

Not helpful, I thought.

But then, the companies put the counselors in the room partly to deflect the family members feelings. Or fears and tears, as they say.

Your mother is so tired, Sam, said my father. He was fiddling with a pile of black and green olives on a tray. The olives were stacked in a pyramid, like in a picture Id once seen of ancient cannonballs. They should have been a tipoff that this was a special occasion, so to speak, because olives arent the kind of food we get every day. We both are, if Im perfectly honest, he added.

We sat there for a while, not knowing what to say.

Eventually Jean suggested we take a walk outside, through the courtyards of the complex. Walks are popular with service companies. Low-cost momentum, I guess, and a natural mood boost.

So we prepared ourselves fresh drinks, mostly in awkward silence, and took them with us into the elevator. We gazed outside as the car descended.

The elevators in our complex are external and made of a shaded glass, so you can see the sky and then the buildings below it, and as you drop, the trees in the courtyard come up to meet you.

Down through the green canopy, down along the tree trunks. Finally we landed facing the rock gardens, the fountains and splashing waterfalls of perfectly reclaimed sewage.

What a nice evening, said my mother, and we looked up dutifully at the fading bands of red and yellow in the western sky.

One thing we do have, in the New World, is beautiful sunsets.

I think what put my parents over the edge was a trip they took a few months ago, a light-rail weekender to the place where my father grew up. It wasnt a coastal town in the strict senseit wasnt right on the beachbut it was on a river delta, maybe 20 miles from where the true coast used to be. When the first storm surges came that couldnt be stopped by seawalls, the town got an influx of coastal refugees. Wave after wave followed, though most of the people didnt stay. Back then they were migrating to places like Ogallala, with fertile land or thick forests. If you look at an old map animation, you can see the masses moving away from the coasts, inward and upward from New York and Florida, from Southern California and the dying cities of the desertLas Vegas and Phoenix, say. The animations look like storms or vast, sky-darkening flocks of birds.

Sometimes, at home, I take a mild mood softener, sit at my screen, and gaze at the animations dreamily. You can customize them to show whatever details you wantthe continent shrinking as the oceans rise plus the massive migrations. I also like to watch the building of the seawalls. You see the swamping of Cape Cod, the swallowing up of the Florida Keys. Islands all over the oceans contract to the size of pinheads, then vanish. You can zoom way out and watch the planet rotate, see the surges of ocean that followed the melting of the ice.

Theres something lovely about it, lovely like Eno or Mozart, thoughespecially without pharmait can be sad.

Anyway, my fathers hometown had been leveled by the waves of refugee camps. Nothing was left of the houses and gardens of his leafy street, the school he walked to holding his younger brothers hand, the swing sets and climbing gyms at the park where he played. All that was gonethe whole town had turned to tent cities and landfills and fields of composting toilets.

My dads baby brother died a while back, a do-it-yourself deal. He hated the service companies. So other than us, my dad has no family left.

For a while after that weekend trip, he and my mother were so quiet that sometimes we forgot they were there.

Before we left for Hawaii, my parents helped Sam and me move to a group facility for survivors who arent old enough to live alone. The two of us will go back there after the trip, to live for a few months till I turn 18.

Then, the morning we left, Sam and I picked them up to catch the boat that brought us here. That was the worst. The apartment where we had lived was bare. Their luggage stood in a neat row against the wall, small cases packed with only bedrolls, some toiletries, and a few clothes. It was a shock to see the sterile whiteness of what used to be home.

Well, said my mother, turning back to cast a glance at the empty living room as we were filing out the front door, good-bye, everything.

Sams coming up the path again toward the hotel building, so close hes almost beneath meI see the circle of his shiny white umbrella. My parents arent with him. I squint: I can still see the two of them, out at the edge of the cliff.

The oceans turning anoxic, scientists say. Its what happened 250 million years ago in the Great Dying, otherwise known as the P-T extinction eventthe biggest mass die-off in Earths history. And now its happening again. The seawaters turned more acid from the carbon its storing, so the ocean food chain has mostly collapsed. Big burps of methane are bubbling out of the water along the continental shelves.

Where there used to be corals and whales and sea lions and seahorses, now theres mostly bacteria and archaea and viruses. The odd school of mutated jellyfish. Plus the garbage vortex and the chemical streams.

But still, Mom and Dad stand at the edge of the bluff, their arms around each others waists, and look out over the faraway waves like anything could be therelike those waves might still be the glittering roof of a marvelous underwater country.
