okay okay time to talk about legends of tomorrow 5.07 “mr parkers cul-de-sac.” i watched it twice bc i liked it so much. it has lots of thoughts on love and its consequences, and what you’re willing to do for love. all that mushy stuff hehe. 
fun to have damien darhk back as a guest star for this episode. i think he is always most sympathetic when the focus is on his love for his daughter, and this episode really leans into that. i like that we get him back for this episode now that we have seen this radical change and development in nora as she has been allowed to grow outside of her father’s influence and she has taken control of her life. like it’s definitely the most interesting time to bring him back. and i like that they bring him back not as a master manipulator villain but as a dad. because again that ended up being the most compelling aspect of his character when he was last on the show. they do of course showcase the villain aspect of him when he has his wizard battle with constantine and then again when he finds out the truth and attacks all the legends, and i think that works well too. good balance of silly and cruel. when he commits suicide at the end that did really get to me. and i like that even after he has made up with the legends sara still refuses to shake his hand bc hes still the man who killed her sister. that feels right for her. 
it’s been sort of running in the background this season but this storyline of nora taking control of her life and finding a sort of healing and catharsis in helping children is so excellent. it’s often shown as being kind of silly bc shes in this ridiculous costume granting children frivolous wishes but on a deeper level it is also so touching. i think it makes perfect sense for her to be confronted with her father again now, because part of what she is healing from is his negative influence on her, and yet there is still so much love between them. nora finally getting the courage to tell her dad that she isn’t the person he wanted her to be, but she is happy and thriving, is like the natural conclusion of her arc of personal reinvention. and then they talk it out and it all turns out well :) i mean damien ends up back in hell but that’s kind of where he belongs so it’s fine. 
despite being a lesbian i AM a big fan of the ray/nora romance and it was sweet to see how much they love each other in this episode. there is something sort of strange about how their relationship struggle in this episode sort of feels like a gay cliche even though theyre straight?? like how nora is hiding ray from her father bc he wouldn’t accept him, and how that little kid tells ray that you shouldn’t be ashamed of who you love. idk i thought it was kind of funny. often in these cw shows i get a bit annoyed at how characters will be so quick to propose marriage but in this case i think it makes sense with ray and nora. they already kind of were acting like a married couple and they just are so good together. their impromptu wedding was so cute. the ending of the episode hints that ray is gonna leave the team, which would be sad because i like him, but it makes sense that getting married would necessitate leaving the team.  
i wasn’t liking the mick/ally romance bc i am a believer in gay mick theory but i did enjoy the revelation that mick has a daughter now. it just feels like a fun and unique challenge for him to have to face. the scene where he is eating cake and zari criticizes him for running from the truth made me really feel for him. because he claims that he’s staying away because he would be a bad influence on his daughter, but really we know that he’s staying away because this kind of relationship is so new to him and he’s scared. even though mick is often a very silly character i think the more serious emotional stuff with him can be very impactful so i’m excited to see how this storyline goes. there’s also something sort of poignant about zari being the one to witness this family reunion and then urge mick to go be in his daughter’s life, since as we know zari 1.0 lost her family and changed history to bring them back. 
i’m noticing this motif of circles. i noticed it first in 5.05 when constantine gets lung cancer and we get the match cut of the hell lady messing with his soul token to the shot of him lying on the floor that has a circular design. and i thought that was just a one time thing but then in the next episode constantine has a circular rug that ray pulls aside to reveal a pentagram and i was thinking hmm. and then in this episode there’s all this talk of circles in the mr parker’s cul-de-sac theme song, about how circles represent eternity, so now i’m positive there’s something there. plus i remembered in 5.05 the young ghost versions of constantine and natalie we see are weaving on a circular loom. and then at the beginning of this episode the illustration of the loom of fate we see is sort of cylindrical or circular. it’s all connected!!!!!! since circles have this symbolic meaning of eternity or of the cycle of death and rebirth i think it makes a lot of sense for legends to use it as a motif. i will be on the lookout for circles in upcoming episodes!!!! 
ok that’s all for this post. i have more to say about sara & ava but i’ll save that for its own post. but yeah this episode was such a favorite of mine even though it was a lot of silly shenanigans i just really enjoyed all the love and mushiness.

Sunken Like Steel
This was entirely Nate’s fault. Or at least, that was what you were going to tell everyone, if and when you woke from whatever had taken away your consciousness. In reality, it had absolutely nothing to do with Nate whatsoever. If anything, he was the first one in the water, turning to steel to sink faster to reach you before you vanished to the depths.
He got you out with help from Mick, your waterlogged clothes doubling your weight. It wasn’t an accident you ended up in the water, though, nor was it an accident that you’d been wearing so many layers. The Legends, yourself included, had been facing a portal maker the last week or so, and every time he threw you across time and space, you ended up in the most freezing cold places, usually the tip of an iceberg or the desert at night.
This time you were prepared for him, but something had changed in his methodology. He’d set off a bomb in the centre of your group, portal-ing himself somewhere safe, leaving you all to feel the blast. What he hadn’t counted on was you diving for him from behind, getting caught in the middle of the blast, but still managing to fall into the tail end of the portal.
There lay the problem, as he appeared on the dock of a nameless river, with you falling from the sky not far behind him. He went to fire at you, but noticed you were unconscious as you plummeted towards the water. You hit it with a sickening splash, sinking slowly to the bottom as he watched on. Rather than wait any longer for your irritating team to show up, he ran, leaving you to drown.
Sara and Ava had split up the team to search as many locations as possible, Zari making Gideon check for any residual portal energy from the past few minutes. There were only three options, and they immediately moved.
Ray, John and Ava wound up at a bar in Taipei, while Zari and Charlie found themselves in a lion den halfway across the world. Mick, Nate and Sara had appeared at the dock just as you hit the water, and the man you had all been hunting was gone.
You didn’t wake up when you were pulled from the water, but Sara managed to get the water from your lungs using her lifeguard training from summer camp. You don’t know how they got you back to the ship, but Mick later let you know that Sara didn’t let go of your hand the whole time.
Ava refused to leave your side from the moment she sat down, not even wanting to move her eyes away from you. She and Sara both blamed themselves for everything, not even letting themselves sleep as they watched you lay there, unmoving. Gideon couldn’t determine if you would wake up at all, which only made them want to leave you less.
The others all came to check on you, but found only silence from Sara, and the most basic of reports from Ava. They were too worried to eat, until Nate insisted that it wasn’t what you would want. They needed sleep too, as it had been days, and they were also starting to stink up the room.
He agreed to watch you, but Sara wouldn’t let go of your hand. ‘I swear, Nate, that dude better be dead by the time we get to him, or he’s going to wish he was.’
‘I know, Sara. Come on, I’ll let you know if anything happens,’ he assured them.
Ava and Sara left together, exhausted beyond words. They felt guilty for leaving you there, knowing that although you loved the team, your connection with them wasn’t as strong and you might panic. They didn’t know how hard you’d hit your head, if you’d remember anything, but they couldn’t do much else.
Surviving on caffeine had only exhausted what was left, the sugar highs and lows taking a toll that you would never wish on anyone. Ava’s head leaned on Sara’s as they walked, holding each other up as always, something you hoped would never change. You had heard them arguing before all of this, their opposing views on taking down your current fugitive sparking a fire that wasn’t going to be easy to coax down.
And yet, it seemed that all it took for them to stop was for you to choose a third, unexplored option, ready to risk your life to prove a point. Tensions had been high recently, some close calls making everyone doubt themselves. Sara tried to argue in Ava’s favour, while Ava almost completely shut her out, insisting that all their approaches were wrong, and that they needed more time.
Sara’s impatience led to them having a blow up in front of the team, only to have you confront them later on and tell them how ridiculous they were being. They almost didn’t listen, until you proposed an experiment, but refused to tell Ava the parameters no matter how many times she requested.
‘Okay, so,’ you started, in the middle of the room before them, ‘Ava’s usual approach is assess the situation, listen to your team for information, observe the area for emergency exits and possible ambush locations, hydrate to prepare for participation, and attack for summation.’
You had tried so hard not to laugh at the eye rolls you got from the pair, but it had stopped them from being against each other for a moment.
‘Sara is usually run in headfirst, die, get brought back to life, do it again,’ you grinned, watching her stick up her middle finger. ‘But, she has since adapted since leading the team. Instead, she now uses herself as bait, leading out all attacking parties, so we can surround them, or get surrounded on purpose, because we work outwards and strong.’
She looked a little chuffed with that, nudging Ava with her elbow all proud, before growing suspicious. ‘Wait, what’s the point of this?’
‘There’s a third option,’ you smiled, holding up your arms. ‘Gideon, show them the Y/N Approach Simulation.’
Ava and Sara left the room in agreement that you should never be in charge of anything ever, and that maybe each other’s approaches weren’t so bad apart, but together, they could adapt and make every situation winnable.
If only they hadn’t doubted themselves this time, the situation something neither had thought about before, and were so unprepared for, they panicked. But then they knew, thanks to you, that there was always a third option, even if it was terrible and stupid.
You didn’t awake until after they’d returned, hair messy and still damp from their shower, Ava falling asleep on Sara’s lap as she laid there. Sara’s fingers ran through your hair as she sat beside you, your cheeks twitching as your eyes began to open.
‘Hi, sleepy head,’ she cooed, a tired smile on her face. ‘Babe, Y/N’s awake.’
Ava bolted upright, flustered as she turned to you. She threw her arms around your neck and kissed your forehead softly, then grabbed your chin as her expression turned serious.
‘Do that again, you better hope you wake up a million times faster, because this was super not cool,’ she ordered, before smiling and sitting on the bed beside you.
You both turned to look at Sara, who had gone rather silent since you had awoken, only to find her gently snoring away, asleep between you and Ava, hand still curled in your hair. Ava held your hand and looked between the pair of you, grateful her girls were still safe, and now under her watchful eye.
‘Ava?’
‘Mm?’
‘This was all Nate’s fault.’
‘Of course it was, sweetheart,’ Ava nodded sarcastically, giving you that look she gave Sara when she tried to lie. You needed to work on your bullshit, it seemed, but Ava was just glad the humour you had used to endear yourself to them was still very much intact.

Constant Pining [Mickey Altieri x reader]
A/N: part two because i think the last one deserves a follow up :> For this one, I decided to play with the fact that Mickey is a film student, so I kind of figured he would use it to his advantage. btw tho this feels super choppy and cheesy in the bad way so idk how to feel ab it:’) pls lmk what you guys think bc i might rewrite it and cut half of this out

It had been two weeks since the party and it was driving Mickey insane. He wasn’t sure what was worse. The fact that life carried on as usual or the fact that you were completely unfazed. He would have preferred if you were all over him or, hell, if you were avoiding him.
Because then he would know how you feel.
But he didn’t. The poor guy hadn’t the slightest clue. Life went on nonetheless. Some days he was able to sit next to you in Psychology (if Halley didn’t try kicking him out of her seat) and the two of you were normal during friend settings. But you never showed up to another party.
Mickey gnawed at his pencil. It was whittled down to practically nothing. He was supposed to be focused on a project that he and Randy were assigned in Film Theory but instead... You were on his mind.
“Can you stop eating that pencil and quit thinking about (Y/n)!” Randy threw a small notebook at Mickey’s head. Mickey snapped out of his daze and easily dodged it. “We need to work on this shit together. I don’t need (Y/n) clouding my camera man’s mind.”
“I’m not even-”
“Save it. You’ve been making the same face for two weeks straight now. It’s the (Y/n)-face. Sid and I coined it.”
Mickey muttered a curse word under his breath and reached for the notebook that was thrown at him. It was Randy’s film book. He flipped through some pages. It was filled with notes for class and film-analysis. Half of the analyses weren’t even assigned for class.
“What are we doing for this again?” Mickey rolled his eyes and threw the notebook onto a table. He propped up his feet and leaned back in his chair. 
The two boys were in a conference room of the film school. A chalkboard had been dirtied with Randy’s ideas for their film project while Mickey was mentally vacant for the time being. The project was to make a movie, each group was assigned a different genre. They were content with being partners, seeing as Randy had the ideas and Mickey had a knack for cinematography. 
“We were assigned to do a documentary.”
“Fucking lame... Everyone else got cool shit. I heard Terry Pusher was assigned fantasy... Fucking fantasy.”
“I know, hell I’d take a love story over this shit,” Randy threw the piece of chalk at the board. 
Mickey paused and sat up. His expression was twisted as if he were onto something. 
“Wait... say that again...”
“I’d take a love story over this shit?” Randy tilted his head.
Mickey stood to his feet and pointed at his geeky friend, an excited expression was evident.
“Exactly.”
The sea of students stormed past you. Your final class of the day ended early so you were more than eager to get back to your dorm. Your roommate was gone for the weekend so hopefully some quiet would get your mind off of Mickey.
The events of the party had been bouncing around the walls of your mind ever since it happened. A part of you thanked Halley for stepping in when she did and a part of you cursed her for it.
You couldn’t fathom dating Mickey. It was unheard of. New. Exhilarating. He was probably one of the hottest guys on campus and he had his hands on your waist.
Sure, he was a total nerd when it came to movies, especially for Tarantino films, and you could listen to his rants for hours, but the thought of him wanting you made your heart skip a beat. If he reciprocated any sort of feelings you’d be sent into cardiac arrest. Did he like you? Was that even possible?
He could have anyone at this school. He knew it, too. But it was possible he could choose you.
Before you were able to expand on that thought, a camera was shoved into your face. 
“And here we have the wonderful, the amazing, the magnificently stunning (Y/n)!” Mickey’s voice imitated a sports announcer. 
His sudden appearance was enough to make your cheeks go ablaze. 
“What are you doing?” You winced and shielded your face.
Randy appeared behind Mickey, “Film project, you’re a part of it!”
“Puh-lease, if anything, they are the star of the film, Meeks!”
You continued to walk to your dorm in hopes of avoiding the nerds but in all honesty, you were smiling like an idiot. 
“What’s it about?” You asked.
Mickey put the camera down for a second and eyed Randy. Luckily, he knew exactly what to say, or rather, what not to say.
“We’re making a documentary. We’re following around a few students, and you’re one of them. Will you watch it when it comes out?”
“Of course,” You grinned. “Just... don’t follow me everywhere with that thing.”
And follow you, they did. 
The very next morning you opened your door to Mickey holding up the blocky piece of tech. He was grinning behind the lens, which forced you to do the same. But you made it a point to shove the camera away. 
This went on for weeks. Mickey would ambush you with his camera everywhere. Meaning that you two were spending more time together. It didn’t matter if you were in the cafeteria or spending the night with your friends. He always managed to film little tidbits of you. 
At first, you would push the camera away or hide your face behind a nearby pillow. 
Then you and Mickey started to hang alone together more often. You found yourself seeking out time with him. Mickey walked you to classes (still filming you with the camera but you didn’t push it away anymore; you just ignored it), he visited you at work and stopped by your dorm frequently. 
Eventually, he had the courage to trap you into a date. 
“Why are you covering my face, Mickey? I know where the cafeteria is...” You groaned, aimlessly walking forward.
“That’s not where we’re eating today.”
“You had no reason to make that sound threatening, Micks... You suck at surprises.”
“Yeah, yeah, you can open your eyes now.”
You opened your eyes to a sprawled out assortment of food on a picnic blanket. 
It was a typical picnic blanket sat under one of the largest trees on campus. It was wide and comfortable. Mickey thought to bring plenty of drinks too. The look on your face filled him with glee as you studied the setting in front of you.
Just last week both of you were talking about your favorite underrated scenes in a romance movie. His answer was the kissing scene in Titanic, but you argued that wasn’t underrated. Your answer was the picnic scene in Armageddon.
Mickey managed to make it come true. If it were sunset, it would have hit the nail on the head.
“Oh my...”
“Do you like it?” Mickey jumped into your line of vision, he looked hopeful. “You said you’ve never been to a picnic before when you mentioned Armageddon and... well that’s just a part of the American dream so I figured- ‘Hey, they shouldn’t miss out on something so fun and peaceful’ so... I made it happen.”
Mickey’s rambling had you smiling wide. Underneath that smooth exterior, he was a nervous wreck around you. 
“Thanks, Micks...”
The food was delicious. You guys talked amongst the meal and the conversation never stopped. Hours passed but you guys continued to laugh and talk. You were having the time of your life. Mickey brought your favorite fruits and snacks, but best of all, animal crackers. You held up the bag excitedly.
“Like from the movie!” You cheered. 
Mickey leaned forward to grab a cracker but you leaned back, smiling mischievously. You loved teasing him.
He furrowed his eyebrows and went to grab again but you leaned back even further. Mickey paused, chuckling, and you thought you won. You reached your hand in to grab a cracker yourself and instead, you felt his body collide into yours. 
You yelped in surprise and fell on your back. The Animal Crackers flew across the blanket and Mickey groaned in defeat. 
“Now look at what you did...” You laughed.
You guys were side-by-side laying on your backs, staring at each other. The blanket was soft. If you weren’t so giddy, you could have fallen asleep right there. Mickey’s body heat enhanced your comfort, the need to lean into him was excessive. 
You giggled at the man, biting the nail on your index finger. Mickey stared back at you, he looked pleased.
“What?”
He shrugged and continued to stare. You faced your head forward to look up at the branches of a tree above you. 
The shade kept you both cool from the sun. Rays of sunshine illuminated your skin, the eccentric shadow of leaves were printed on your face. A breeze flew by, causing your baby hairs to wave in the wind. Mickey couldn’t pull his eyes away.
“Baby-” You said, snapping him out of his trance- “Do you think it’s possible that anyone else in the world is doing this very same thing at this very same moment?”
You slowly turned your eyes back to Mickey, hoping he’d catch on. His toothy grin spread across his cheeks. He thought back to the movie line, hoping to get it right.
“I hope so...” He mumbled but you heard it perfectly. “Otherwise... What the hell are we trying to save?”
His face was an inch away from yours. You could feel his breath hitting your face. It was sweet. It smelled of the strawberries you shared moments before. 
A few strands of his hair hung in front of his eyes, separate from the rest of his slicked-back locks. His large brown eyes were looking at you sincerely. They were inviting you in. Mickey’s lips twitched upward as if he were tempted to make a move. 
But he didn’t.
You wanted to reach toward his face and pull him closer. You wanted to feel his lips meld into yours, allow the moment to overtake you. You wanted to feel his unshaven face press against yours and tickle your cheeks. You wanted to feel his hand wrap around your own. You wanted to feel him, to touch him.
But you didn’t.
Two weeks later Randy and Mickey announced their documentary was done. The finished product was ready to be viewed. You were invited to come to see it.
During those two weeks, you spent time wondering how you could finally make a move. You were sick of this. You wanted this to end and to have a new beginning. You were sure that Mickey had feelings for you. It had to be true. You needed a leap of faith. 
On the other hand, Mickey spent the same amount of time wondering where he was going wrong. Why couldn’t he pluck up the courage to kiss you? Making the first move always worked well for him. Why couldn’t he do it now? More than anything, he hoped that perhaps this documentary will give you an idea of his feelings. It had to. 
So here you were, nervously fiddling with a blocky device in your jacket pocket, avoiding the eyes of Mickey, who sat on a stool in front of Sidney’s TV. She opted that they show their documentary in her and Halley’s room of their sorority house. Surprisingly, they were the only ones with a good enough TV.
Mickey couldn’t pull his eyes off of you. It became a nervous habit. He wanted to know what you were thinking almost 24/7, he was beyond pissed that he wasn’t a telepath.
“Alright alright alright...” Randy strolled up to the screen. “Is everyone here? Does everyone have their snacks and their drinks? You all need to enjoy this to the fullest extent so snacks are a must.”
Everyone glanced at one another, drink and popcorn in hand. You glanced back to see Sidney all over her boyfriend Derek on the couch. You gave a half-grin, wishing that could be you and Mickey. Halley sat on the opposite end of the couch, happily munching on popcorn. 
“Well... without further ado-” Mickey began.
“Wait isn’t this a documentary? This better not be boring as hell...” Halley lifted her hand and we all nodded in agreement.
“Trust me, guys, this is good stuff. Probably our best yet,” Randy reassured us. “I’m going to play it now...”
We fell silent as Randy placed a tape inside of the VHS. He then turned out the lights as the intro began. Randy’s voice came through the TV.
“Love...” Tidbits of students on campus flashed across the screen. “What is love? ...And no, I don’t mean The Haddaway song.”
A few chuckles sounded around the room. Mickey held his glance on you still. 
“Falling in love is one of the most complex things a human can do... The psychology is even more complex. Certain chemicals are released that explain those butterflies in your stomach or why you get sweaty palms around your crush. Well, many scientists believe that humans are wired to fall in love...” Randy’s voice faded along with the screen. 
The sound of talking college students came through and the camera was poised onto Derek in the cafeteria. 
“What do you love about Sid, Derek?” Mickey said through the TV. 
The camera was far too close to Derek’s face, who looked insanely annoyed. 
“Bug off-”
“Just answer the question.”
Derek thought for a moment, then smiled, “Her smile and eyes. I can’t choose one. They just... go hand in hand. They’re gentle, kind, sweet... Like her.”
A chorus of ooh’s and aw’s rang throughout the room and we threw popcorn kernels at Derek. Both he and Sidney were blushing profusely.
The next clip was of Halley walking on the sidewalk. You could hear Mickey again. 
“Ms. Halley, please explain to us what you are doing right now.”
“I am going on a date, which I do not need you two dorks coming with me-” Halley shoved the camera away and the camera didn’t see her again. 
There were a few more scenes like this, the guys asking random couples on campus what they love about one another. 
You were never asked anything while you were filmed, so you were confused, to say that the least. What was your role during this? 
At times, you would lock eyes with Mickey. He looked frazzled but stared at you all the same. 
Randy posed another question to each of the couples, “How long does it take for someone to fall in love?” The screen was black as you heard the answers,
“Weeks-”
“Months, maybe six?”
“Years,” Someone said. 
And you appeared on the TV. 
It was when Mickey first filmed you. There was more than one clip of you, too, each a few seconds long. The first five contained you shying away from the camera but after that, you could see yourself growing more comfortable around him. You were never looking at the lens but always at the cameraman. 
The screen went black once more and another question was asked, “What’s your ideal love story?”
“Something like a Nicholas Sparks book. Tragic... yet romantic.”
“If we hated each other at first, but then we learned to love. The buildup is fantastic.”
“Childhood friends turned to lovers. Something about that constant pining has me reeling...”
You snapped your eyes towards Mickey. You couldn’t read the expression on his face. You looked back at the screen to see yourself once more.
“Micks... come on and watch this movie-” You were sat on a couch with a bowl of popcorn. You shoved a handful into your mouth when suddenly you noticed the camera sitting in front of you, “You left your camera in here! ...Hey- are you filming me?” You lifted the device to your face and stuck out your tongue. 
You could hear Mickey chuckle in the background. 
Another clip played of Mickey and you sitting on the floor. It was a different day, you guys were laughing hysterically over something. You’ve never seen Mickey so happy.
More and more clips of questions and answers paired with you played. It was matched together perfectly. Realization dawned on you. Was this a confession from Mickey? 
Mickey’s sweet voice played once more. But this wasn’t for any of the couples. He was sat on the couch, asking you.
“Think about a cheesy but underrated romance, okay? What is your favorite romantic scene from that movie?” 
You were only a few inches away from him, head rested on your hand on the backboard of his bed. 
“I’ll go first, I think the kiss during Titanic is spectacular.”
“It’s good but it’s not underrated Micks.”
“Alright, then what’s your choice?”
“...Armageddon. The picnic scene. I’ve never been on a picnic so something like that just seems so... tranquil.”
“You’ve never been to a picnic?”
“Yep... is that weird?”
“Completely and utterly, (Y/n).”
You laughed loudly in the documentary. The next scene was of Mickey setting the camera up someplace. He looked nervous. When he stepped away from the camera, it was a perfect angle to film the picnic he set up for you. 
You knew the rest. The next couple of minutes showed your guys’ picnic together. Including the movie quote. 
The end of the film was nearing, and Mickey’s anxiety was through the roof. It was far from romantic but once his project stopped playing he was going to confess to you. He was going to confess in front of all of his friends, for you. Just a few minutes left and he was going to do it. 
And then you left. 
Mickey finished the quote from the movie and you left instantly. Mickey’s jaw dropped as he stared at his friends. They looked equally confused. 
“Go after them, dude!” Randy yelled. 
It took a while but eventually, Mickey found you. You were on the porch of the sorority house, leaning against the railing and staring at the sunset. There was a cool breeze and parts of your hair waved in the wind. You had your arms wrapped around your body, pulling your jacket close. Mickey could see the orange glow illuminating your face when he joined your side. 
“Are you okay?”
You didn’t look at him. His heart dropped. He messed up.
“Listen, I didn’t mean to-” 
You shushed him. He fell silent.
“Come here... close your eyes... Step up... No peeking”
“I’m not...”
You pulled on his arm and forced him to stand behind you. You guided him to stand on the lower bar of the railing with you, his body nearly wrapped around yours. He stumbled a bit but he followed your movement blindly. The lack of distance between you two had him trembling. 
“Just a sec...” You whispered and pulled a walkman out of your pocket. “I wanted to get this right...” You said and pressed play.
The instrumental of My Heart Will Go On began to play and Mickey barked out a laugh. 
“What in the world-”
“Put your hands on my waist, Micks,”  You grabbed his hands. “You can open your eyes now.”
Just like the movie, Mickey thought. 
“I realize we can just see more of the campus... not the ocean,” Your words were gentle. They came out like honey. “But I wanted you to see... how you make me feel like I can fly.”
Mickey stared at your adoringly. Your scent filled his nostrils and he wanted nothing more than to stay like this forever. His hands ventured from your waist to lift them, like in the movie. Mickey leaned forward and whispered, “Come Josephine my flying machine going up she goes...” His hot breath tickled your ear and you could feel as he intertwined his hand with yours. “Going up...”
You turned to stare at him just as the music of your cassette player swelled. You hesitantly reached his face, and Mickey leaned in instinctively. Your hand comfortably rested on the back of his neck as his lips gently pressed against yours. 
They were hesitant, hot, gentle, almost hungry. His skin was a burning touch. Your hand melded against his skin, touching the curve of his jaw. Mickey’s fingers danced around your body, wanting to explore every crevice for the first time. Mickey had been unknowingly craving the touch of your skin and lips for so long, it felt like euphoria took control of his body.
He poured himself into you. You were willing to drown in his touch.

Luke’s song book has been through a lot over the years.
It’s had tears soaked into its pages. It’s had crumbs stuck in between its binding. It’s had dozens of songs written on it in fast, messy handwriting, thousands of words based on Luke’s inner thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams.
It’s survived years worth of scribbles, cross-outs, rips and tears; even hugs and kisses, when Luke’s written something he’s sure will be a hit someday.
It’s survived death, some time in a dark room, and a tumbling trip back to Earth twenty five years in the future.
And now, the boy who’s been writing in it for all that time, whose soul is attached to it in ways most people wouldn’t even understand, is using its pages for something else.
Something no one would have ever expected.
A list.
Ways I Can Cross Over.
He thought that maybe, Unsaid Emily would’ve been it. There was a small part of him that had expected to just vanish into thin air the second Julie handed his parents that sheet of notebook paper.
His notebook is almost empty now. Luke thinks that that’s fitting; he’s spent most of his soul onto the pages. He’s a ghost. He’s got nothing more to give. Maybe it’s even a sign -- a sign that he’s not going to need to write music for much longer. The notebook is running out of space. It’s running out of time, just like he is.
He wonders if he could even use a new songbook. It wouldn’t be a part of him, the way his old one was. It would be empty; a blank slate for him to start a new journey in. A whole new marathon to run just as he’s crossing the finish line of the last one.
And… he doesn’t want to.
He’s tired of running. Running from his parents. Running from Caleb. From things that he broke, from things that were threatening to break him. From things that were hurting his friends.
Luke’s always been one for impulsive decisions.
So after he makes his list, he dog-ears the page and gives himself a time limit.
He has until the pages run out in his notebook to figure out what his unfinished business is… and finish it.

The problem is, Luke’s life on Earth wasn’t that long. He’s had seventeen years to start things, and practically no time at all to finish them. The possibilities of what his unfinished business actually is are endless. There was that music festival the guys had wanted to play at the end of summer ‘95. Countless world tours they wanted to go on. He wanted to sign an autograph for Dave Grohl, shake hands with Mick Jagger. He wanted to drink chocolate from the world’s largest chocolate waterfall in Alaska.
So few of these things he could actually do, now that he was dead.
Even fewer of them he could do without the guys. If his unfinished business really had to be just for him, maybe the band stuff wouldn’t be enough.
He never finished high school. He never learned how to play the bass -- he’s always wanted to; after all, Reggie could play the guitar, so Luke should know how to play his instrument, too.
And the only other thing he could think of that was absolutely, one hundred percent his business to finish… was his relationship with his mother.
Julie bringing “Unsaid Emily” over to his old house had been something. It filled the hole in his chest just enough that he could pretend it wasn’t there. Having his mom finally see how he felt about her, how much he regretted leaving, was like putting an ice pack on a burn. It eased the pain for the moment, had him thinking maybe that would be enough, that it would heal properly. But the ice pack’s melted, now; it’s gone back to room temperature, and his heart is still screaming.
Luke wonders what else he would have to do to get rid of the guilt.
He knows -- he hopes -- that the guilt won’t follow him to the afterlife. Because it’s really the only thing about this ghost-limbo that he wants to escape from. He doesn’t mind the invisibility, or the intangibility, because those things have never really prevented him from playing music. Music, though, he’ll miss, but Luke thinks it’s a small price to pay. After all, Alex and Reggie should’ve had their whole lives to play music. And even if Luke crosses over, they still can. He’s the one who caused their untimely deaths in the first place.
And he can never undo that, but… something he’s realized as all of them have adjusted to being ghosts is that he’s not really needed.
Sunset Curve could go on as a trio. Julie would still have her found family in Alex and Reggie and Willie. Reggie would have his friends that remained, as well as Ray and Carlos to fill in any gaps.
And Alex and Willie would have each other.

For Willie, the whole concept of “unfinished business” is just… not really on his radar. He’s pretty content in his afterlife. He is, as the kids say, vibing. He’s moving along, singing a song. He was never in any rush to figure out what his unfinished business was, and he was especially never in any rush to cross over, to fade out of existence entirely and into the unknown.
He also never really understood why other ghosts would want to do that. Until he met Alex and the others, and realized that sometimes, urgency forces your hand. Outside circumstances throw you out of your comfort zone, force you to do things you never would’ve considered before.
But also, since meeting Alex, the tiny part of his soul that’s always been curious about what his unfinished business was -- curious about crossing over, about what’s on the other side -- has pretty much shriveled away to nothing. Alex gives a whole new meaning to Willie’s life -- to his afterlife, really -- but the drummer makes him feel alive again in a way that he hasn’t felt in decades. Long before he’d forgotten the age-old saying, look both ways before you cross the street.
Willie wouldn’t call himself the most observant person on Earth. Sometimes, he can be a little oblivious. He can be blinded to the truth, only see what he wants to see -- he can deny what’s right in front of him. Give people the benefit of the doubt who don’t deserve it, like he’s done with Caleb so many times before.
He tries not to stress about things. Tries to just be. Live -- or do whatever he’s doing as a ghost, honestly -- with no regrets, no looking back. He doesn’t worry about consequences. But at the same time, he’s also scared of disappointing people. Scared of how he’s coming across to other people. He needs to make sure he’s not messing up too too badly, because he wants the people he loves to love him back -- he wants them to want him to stick around.
So he pays attention. He misses stuff sometimes, sure… but Willie’s mission in his afterlife is simple. Chill out, do whatever he wants to do -- it’s not like he can get caught; he’s invisible. Just don’t get on Caleb Covington’s bad side.
Love whoever he still can, and be loved back.
Willie loves Alex. He’s loved him since the museum. He’s needed him since he ran into him on the street with his skateboard. But lately, Willie’s started to realize that he might also love Luke. Not any more or less than he loves Alex, which is a confusing problem in itself. And not really in a different way than Alex, either. His heart does somersaults when he’s around Luke now, too.
He might need him in different ways than Alex, though. Alex calms him down, grounds him when his head’s in the clouds or he’s too distracted by other things. He brings him back, makes him aware of what’s most important in the moment. He makes him laugh. Makes him think. Makes him stop and appreciate everything around him, instead of just whipping through his afterlife with no concerns. Alex makes him care.
But Luke… With Luke, it feels like he’s stuck upside-down at the top of a roller coaster, but there’s no one else he’d rather be stuck with. He feels more dangerous with Luke, willing to do things that he’s too scared to drag Alex into. He feels like there’s no limits. In one of Luke’s songs, he wrote face first, full charge, and that’s the exact energy he brings when he’s around Willie -- when he’s around anyone, really. He’s passionate, and driven, and so unafraid. Willie doesn’t have to be as careful around Luke.
And they’re both super protective of Alex.
Willie needs Alex for the slow rollercoaster ride to the top of the hill, and he needs Luke for laughter, for thrill, for excitement. For the thrilling, twisty way back down.
Willie’s not sure that anything feels complete without Alex and Luke.
So, since they’re both a part of Willie in ways that he can’t even really explain, Willie watches. He pays attention to both of them, taking in everything about them in quiet, soft, subtle ways.
That’s how he starts to notice that something’s off with Luke.

A week goes by, the pages in Luke’s notebook are dwindling, and he still has no idea what his unfinished business is.
It’s frustrating, having to narrow his entire life down to one possible milestone he’s never gotten to achieve. There are far too many. And the nagging voice in the back of Luke’s head -- the one telling him that Alex and Reggie have just as many milestones -- isn’t helping matters at all.
Luke just wants all this to be over. He deserves it -- he’s not sure whether he deserves the questionable peace crossing over would bring; everyone always says death is peaceful, anyway. But he definitely deserves the “no longer existing” part. And Alex and Reggie do deserve it. They deserve everything that life -- or afterlife, really -- can still offer them. Luke’s tired of holding them back. It feels like nothing’s ever good enough -- like he’s wearing shoes made out of lead, or something, trying to walk across a desert, and he’s got a time limit to get there. And Alex and Reggie are chained to him -- stuck in the same predicament, because they just had to follow him to that hot dog stand. He’s tired of getting them into these messes. First death; and, as if that wasn’t bad enough, into the Hollywood Ghost Club with Caleb Covington, all because he just couldn’t let his grudge against Bobby -- Trevor Wilson -- die.
He’s still writing music, but his lyrics aren’t as powerful anymore. They’re not as confident, not as inspiring. And he writes with Julie, but he thinks Julie can tell that his spark has dimmed.
He hopes that she thinks he’s just going through writer’s block, or something. Something fixable.
He’s been working on his list for the past week, too. He thinks he’s got his unfinished business pretty much narrowed down; there’s three things on his list he wants to try. School. Bass. Emily.
He needs Reggie’s help with the bass one, so he’s been putting it off. And Emily…
Luke has tried to steer clear of his old house since Julie gave his parents the song. Because… the fact that it didn’t help, that it didn’t ease the ache in his heart in exactly the way Julie hoped that it would, made Luke feel guilty. And he doesn’t really want to see if the song made a difference for his parents. Because what if it didn’t?
What if they’re like Luke, just wishing for more? More interaction that they can never have -- an actual conversation about the regrets that he touched on in the song? A physical hug, the weight of their arms around each other, a look of real, actual understanding in their eyes that Luke’s never thought he would actually see.
And the thing is… if his parents are Luke’s unfinished business, what the hell is he supposed to do about it?
The prospect of being chained to the Earth forever because of something he’d screwed up beyond repair when he was alive has his stomach churning, almost as badly as it was when he’d eaten that hot dog.
The easiest one for Luke to focus on is school -- which, if someone had said to him twenty-five years ago that school would be at the top of his priority list, he’d have laughed in their face -- and the easiest way for him to do it is through Julie.
Julie’s sufficiently banned him from actually showing up at her school, but that doesn’t mean he can’t do other things. Like homework and studying. So Luke’s plan is this: he’ll study with Julie, maybe convince her to let him do a couple of her homework assignments. And if she aces her next math test because of the work they’ve done together, Luke’ll consider it a win.
It’s the best option he has. It’s not like he can sit in a classroom anymore, or take his own tests.
He sneaks up on her one afternoon as she’s sitting in her bedroom, chewing on a pencil, face scrunched in confusion.
“Hey, Jules. Whatcha doin?”
At the sound of his voice, Julie looks up at him and her confusion transforms into a smile. “Hey, Luke! Just homework.”
“Need any help?” He shuffles a little closer to the bed, mindful of Julie’s distaste for having the boys in her room.
Julie’s face flips back to confusion like a lightswitch. “You… want to help me with my homework?”
“Yeah!” Luke huffs out an awkward laugh, rubbing the back of his neck. “I just… was curious, I guess. About what you’re learning in school.”
“Why?”
“You know, I never finished high school!” Luke says. “I’ve kind of always wondered what it would’ve been like if I had. Y’know, walking across a stage in that dumb cap and gown. Um -- accomplishing something. Being able to finish something important!”
He’s saying too much -- he knows by the way Julie’s expression shifts, confusion into curiosity into concern.
“Hey, wait,” she says, placing her pencil down and closing her textbook. “Are you okay? Is there something you want to talk about, Luke?”
“What? No! I’m fine!”
He hates the way his voice comes out, rough and high-pitched and decidedly not fine. Julie looks like she’s about to argue, so he opens his dumb, not-fine, impulsive mouth once again. “Seriously, Jules. I’m good. Gotta go meet the boys now, see ya!”
He poofs away, but he can still see Julie’s worried stare still fixed on him behind his eyelids.

“Don’t you think he’s been acting kinda strange?”
Willie is sitting in the garage, Reggie on the couch to his right and Alex behind him, braiding his hair like he does when he gets nervous.
And he’s trying to console Alex, to tell him to relax, that they’ll make sure Luke is fine -- only the confidence that Willie’s normally so famous for is dwindling.
Alex is worried about Luke, and Willie would love to reassure him, except that Willie thinks that Alex has a point. Luke has been acting strange lately; way too over the top during rehearsals, more trips to see his mom than usual -- trips that he thinks they don’t know about -- plus, he’s been reading books.
Julie’s school books, which he takes out of her room sometimes and stashes up on top of the loft. Books that Alex found there earlier that day, when he was looking for his drumsticks. Books that Alex had asked Willie about… and they’d both determined that it was Luke who had brought them up there, because Reggie wouldn’t hide the fact that he was teaching himself Trigonometry, and Luke’s been acting really weird as it is.
“You said he’s doing math?” Reggie asks, eyes wide. Willie figures Reggie must know just as well as he does -- if not better -- what Luke doing math could mean: that he’s not acting like himself.
“Yes!” Willie flails, waving his arms wildly -- to make a point -- and knocking into his boyfriend, who flinches back, tugging on Willie’s hair in the process.
“Ow!”
“Well you didn’t have to jump like that!” Alex hisses back. “Stop moving. I’m trying to stress-braid.”
“Sorry, Alex,” Willie sighs, straightening himself on the sofa. Sometimes, Alex just needs to stress-braid his hair. It gives him something to do with his hands; it’s a way for him to occupy his mind -- to focus on things other than the anxiety. And Willie’s usually all too happy to provide that service (what feels better than having your hair braided, especially by a boy you love?)
“Do you think he’s okay?” Alex mumbles, fingers once again fumbling through Willie’s hair in his unpracticed, clumsy way.
“Why don’t you guys just talk to him?” Reggie asks. “D’you have any idea what could be wrong?”
“No,” Willie huffs. “He’s just been acting so weird. I know it’s something. He’s doing stuff that he’s never cared about before -- like math. But also just… the stuff he normally loves, music. He’s… acting like it’s gonna be taken away from him, or something. Haven’t you noticed how hard he’s pushing you guys in band practice?”
“He’s acting like… like we’re running out of time,” Alex realizes. “But why?”
Just then, the boy in question poofs into the garage -- like he was rushing to get there; his landing’s not clean, and he stumbles around for a moment before catching himself on one of the microphone stands. He straightens up and sees that he has an audience.
“Hey -- hey, guys,” he stammers. “What’s up? We gonna practice?”
His eyes fix on Reggie, then, and he perks up. “Oh! Reg! I’ve been meaning to ask you -- can you teach me how to play the bass?”
“Can I--” Reggie stops, stares at Luke for a moment, trying to piece everything together.
Alex, though, right in front of Willie behind the sofa, looks like he’s already figured it out. He blinks at Luke. “You want to learn how to play bass?”
“I always have,” Luke shrugs. Alex studies him, and Luke twitches under his gaze.
“I just thought it would be cool, ya know, to know all our instruments. So can you teach me, Reg?”
“Um -- I --” Reggie’s eyes dart between Alex, Willie, and Luke, probably trying to figure out what the right thing to say is. Willie doesn’t know, exactly, but he knows one thing for sure: there’s no way Luke’s sudden interest in learning the bass is a coincidence.
Alex seems to be on the same page, but unlike Willie, he’s more inclined to take charge, to do something about it. “Reg, can we talk to Luke alone for a minute?”
“Yes,” Reggie lets out a sigh of relief and poofs away, leaving Willie and Alex to deal with… whatever this is. Willie still isn’t totally sure.
He’s once again enormously grateful for Alex, and the fact that his boyfriend has a pretty good handle on what’s going on in the world seventy-five percent of the time. Because it shocks Willie just as much as it does Luke when Alex says, “Why are you trying to cross over?”
What?
Willie hasn’t put the pieces together nearly as well as Alex has -- in fact, he feels like they’ve been working on entirely different puzzles. Why would Luke be trying to cross over? Why would he want to leave all the guys, and Julie, behind forever?
He wouldn’t. It doesn’t make sense.
Except the second the words leave Alex’s mouth, Luke freezes, eyes wide like he’s been tossed into the path of an oncoming train, shoes welded to its tracks.
And Willie starts to think that maybe his boyfriend wasn’t so far off the mark, after all.

“There are people who love you, you know.”
Luke blinks up at Alex, still frozen, still thrown for a loop, still… not understanding how Alex figured him out.
“How do you think we’d feel if you crossed over?” Alex continues, his intense gaze still fixed on Luke, Luke squirming uncomfortably underneath it. “Without us? Is that… is that something you want?”
Alex’s voice finally cracks, betraying the emotion underneath it, and it’s almost too much for Luke to take. His wild eyes dart around the studio, looking for something -- anything -- to focus on, to take him out of the moment… and he finds the string lights, hung across the walls and the ceilings. He starts counting the bulbs, reciting the numbers in his head. He only makes it to seven before Willie’s voice breaks his concentration.
“Luke?”
“How… how did you know that’s what I was trying to do?” Luke mumbles.
“Well… the math’s what clued me in,” Willie lets out a half-hearted laugh as Alex takes slow steps around the sofa and sits down.
“Come here,” he calls out to Luke -- and although every bone in Luke’s body is screaming run, get out, get far, far away from this conversation… he finds himself joining them, sitting down in the spot on the couch they’ve made in between them.
“We just want you to know there are people who love you,” Willie says. “People -- people who need you, Luke. You can’t leave us, okay? You can’t cross over. Not without us.”
“But you -- you guys and Reggie and Julie -- you don’t need me.”
“What are you talking about?” Alex asks. “Of course we--”
“You and Reg would still be alive if it weren’t for me,” Luke growls. “So don’t say you need me. All I do is mess everything up. You guys, our careers, my parents…”
“Hang on, Luke,” Alex reaches a hand out, momentarily caught off guard. Luke doesn’t see why; it’s not like what he said was that complicated. He’s messed up. He breaks things. He ruined his parents’ lives by running away. He almost ruined Julie’s life, by getting involved with Caleb. And -- and Alex and Reggie…
“None of that’s your fault,” Alex says with conviction.
“Alex--”
“No!” Alex gets up, suddenly, and starts to pace around the room, fingers digging through his hair. “You have to know that. We don’t blame you for any of that!”
“Luke, Alex is right,” Willie reaches a hand out, cautiously, and takes one of Luke’s. When Luke doesn’t pull away, Willie pulls him even closer, into his chest, and starts gently running his fingers through Luke’s hair.
Luke sinks into Willie’s chest, eyes following Alex’s nervous pacing -- he’s biting his lip, and his hands are shaking slightly. Luke hadn’t realized that it might be hard on Alex, too, dealing with Luke’s current mental spiral.
He pulls away from Willie, ignoring the other boy’s whine of protest, and sits up to face Alex. “Hey, Alex,” he calls out quietly. “Come back and sit down. I’m-- I’m good. You don’t have to worry about me. Just… take deep breaths, okay?”
“Are you seriously trying to calm me down right now?” Alex snaps. A flash of hurt crosses Luke’s face -- one that he must not be quick enough to hide, because Alex’s own face softens at the sight of it.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “Luke… I--”
“Just come back here and hold me, please,” Luke croaks.
Luke… doesn’t cry much, if he can help it. He hates tears, both his own and other people’s, and generally tries to avoid them at all costs. But… the look on Alex’s face, the tone of his voice -- his scared, anxious, desperate voice as he snapped at Luke for trying to calm him down -- has the dam breaking, finally, and the tears are bursting out of Luke’s eyes and running down his face before he even knows what’s happening, running down and soaking into the collar of his flannel shirt.
At the sight of Luke’s tears, Alex startles, and makes a beeline for his side. Luke is thrown into a group hug, Alex and Willie on either side of him.
And he just lets himself cry.

It takes a while, but finally Luke calms down a bit.
He stays on the couch, sandwiched in between two of his favorite people on the planet. Willie’s hands are still running gently through his hair; Alex’s thumb is rubbing small circles on his wrist.
His tears have finally stopped, but there’s this annoying, puffy ache in his head and behind his eyes that feels like it’s going to linger for a while.
It’s quiet, and the quiet allows Luke to think about everything that’s happened that day -- after weeks of his stupid, ill-advised mission to complete his unfinished business, he’s been found out.
And he found out that people -- Alex and Willie, who are love and sunshine and light and everything beautiful about the world personified -- would actually miss him if he was gone. That people care, that they don’t blame him for the stuff that he’s been blaming himself for for months.
It’s… a lot to wrap his head around, and even though the tears have stopped, the uncertainty and anxiety and desire to not be a burden is still swirling around in his head, leaving him silent and still as he sits there in between Alex and Willie, his head now resting on Willie’s shoulder.
He knows that those feelings, like the ache he feels in his heart and his head, will probably be around a while.
“I’m sorry for making you worry ‘bout me,” he mumbles, burrowing his face even deeper into Willie’s loose-fitting sweatshirt. Willie’s arms wrap around him and hold him there, and Luke takes in a deep, slow breath, inhaling Willie’s musky scent, shutting his eyes in the first moment of contentment he’s felt in weeks.
“I meant what I said, you know,” Alex whispers. “None of it’s your fault. There are people who love you. We…”
He stops, and Luke turns his head as much as Willie’s grip will allow to try to see why. He’s able to just peek at Alex out of the corner of his eye, and he sees that the other boy’s frowning. Like he’s unsure of what he’s about to say. Like he’s nervous.
“Alex?” Luke struggles out of Willie’s grip, and reluctantly, the other boy lets him go. He shuffles to the other side of the sofa, closer to Alex, and the drummer opens his arms for Luke willingly.
Being in Alex’s arms is different than being in Willie’s, too. Alex is sturdier; less teddy-bear like than Willie is, but comforting and warm and inviting all the same. Alex’s arms feel like home just as much as Willie’s do, and Luke melts into the hug instantly, like an ice cream cone on the hot pavement in July. Alex’s hand runs up and down Luke’s back and Luke shivers, eyes threatening to slip closed despite his need to hear Alex’s answer.
“Willie and I love you, Luke,” Alex says softly. There’s no more uncertainty -- a hint of nervousness, but Luke doesn’t doubt what Alex is saying for a second. There’s a conviction in his tone -- a confidence -- that Alex only really uses when talking about people he loves. This… defensiveness, this love, this conviction.
“We don’t have to figure everything out now,” Alex continues -- probably realizing Luke’s been through enough that day. Luke appreciates that, actually. There’s only one answer he would ever give to Alex and Willie -- only one thing his heart’s ever wanted; Luke can see it now, now that the sound of his heartbeat is pulsing in his ears, now that he feels like he’s both standing on the edge of a mountain, about to take a leap of faith into the crisp winter air below -- and at the same time, on solid ground, in no danger of falling, of stumbling, of getting hurt. He feels safe and exhilarated all at the same time, and this feeling is both familiar and completely new, more amplified than it usually is. Not what he’s used to.
But Luke feels like he’s ready to take the leap now. He still feels guilty, still isn’t actually sure whether his friends -- his family -- would be better off without him. But Alex and Willie have never steered him wrong before.
When he’s sitting in between them, their arms around him and their warm, soft hands running through his hair… Luke feels like maybe he can get through anything.

Movie Review: The Tiger Rising

The Tiger Rising is a book by multi-Newbery-winning author Kate DiCamillo that has been adapted into a movie that will not be winning any awards of any kind. That isn’t, in and of itself, tragic, as plenty of good movies don’t win awards. What is tragic is that Newbery Medals are about honoring books that give young readers the respect they deserve, and this movie does not give young viewers any respect at all.
Rob Horton (Christian Convery) and his father Robert (Sam Trammell) have moved to Florida to escape the trauma of Rob’s mother’s (Katherine McPhee) death from cancer; she is shown entirely in flashbacks. There Robert does low-paid handyman jobs for the cruel and arrogant motel owner Beauchamp (Dennis Quaid) and Rob goes to a school where he is bullied relentlessly for a visible infection on his legs. It is never really explained why his mother’s death meant they had to leave their house and move to a seedy motel in another state, other than the fact his dad didn’t want to hear people talking about his deceased wife, which seems a poor reason to do that to a kid. Rob’s class is joined by Sistine (Madalen Mills), who is fiery and hates the south and is named after the Sistine Chapel. We are frequently reminded that not knowing this means you are stupid. They will eventually discover that Beauchamp is caging a tiger he intends to use for promotion, and plan to set the unfortunate beast free. Queen Latifah rounds out the cast as a sage room cleaner, while Angela Giarratana is built up as a sympathetic teacher and then forgotten about.

The fundamental assumptions in the mind of first time feature writer-director Ray Giarratana are all hugely insulting to not-yet-grown persons. He assumes they cannot grasp the words of adults unless they are obvious and simple. He assumes they cannot communicate their own strong feelings without resorting to an outburst. He assumes they cannot tell who is bad and who is not unless the bad person swaggers like Mick Jagger. Worst of all, he assumes that they cannot understand a movie with complex situations, emotions, and lessons without being spoon-fed the lessons and having the emotions conveyed with hammy overacting.
One would think that we’d be past these assumptions. If they do not know or care about film or literary history, they could at least watch Harry Potter and maybe latch onto the notion that kids the age of the film’s fifth graders are a lot smarter and tougher than adults give them credit for. Here we have fifth graders who are too stupid to realize a tiger can and will eat them, too thick to understand when it is explained to them that a wild tiger cannot live in the jungles of Florida, and too sheltered to realize that bragging, threatening show-offs like Quaid’s ridiculous character are bad news. I, for one, knew all this by the time I was seven.
Despite not being marketed as faith-based, the film’s frequent reminders that God is good and all powerful and can do anything start to feel like an excuse for it being a bad movie. The very fact I mention this in my review will of course cause the Sunday Church crowd to say I dismissed the movie because it is religious. I can assure them, I dismiss it not because it is religious but because it is religious badly. It’s impossible not to be taken right out of a film where a mother and son are lying on a picnic blanket admiring the summer greenery, and the mother starts saying it looks like the first green God ever made. Equally impossible is to try not to chuckle when a woman rounds a corner and sees a tiger and says, out loud, “Who can doubt the fearfulness of God when he can make something like that?”

These are merely bad religious lines in a movie full of lines that are bad, period. Mills has the opposite qualities of Quvenzhane Wallis, who hit the scene at age nine with a thunderclap. She has only two tones of voice, sarcastic and sarcastic-but-louder, hissing every line she does not bark. She was ten when filming, so we will give her the benefit of the doubt and blame the screenplay. Quaid was not ten. While not exactly an actor whose name has ever put behinds in seats, he’s better than this. He’s even better than this in his numerous faith-based roles, which are themselves often not very much better than this. Latifah has more oomph in one finger than she shows here. The only logical conclusion is that a career effects man has made his first feature film, and made it very poorly. Befitting his career on visuals, scant moments of brief joy occur when Rob’s woodcarvings are made to seem alive. Otherwise, there’s no reason for anyone to see this movie, not with more than enough options available that won’t outright insult the young audience they want to draw.
Verdict: Avoid Like The Plague

Sara can feel her stomach churning, and tears burning beneath her eyelids.
She has hated Lewis Snart for a long time now. The only comfort she has ever been able to take with the thought of him is that he is dead, and it was a very painful death.
Or at least, that was his fate before an aberration appeared.
She and Leonard were in the training room this morning, each doing their separate exercises. She’d been going through some of her forms whilst Len had been behind her across the room and hitting the punching bag. Eventually she noticed she hadn’t heard him in awhile, but she hadn’t heard him leave either. When she turned around he was gone, and before she could start looking for him Gideon called her to bridge.
She found out what happened, and immediately she had wanted to throw up.
It was the same thing that happened with Ray on the mission that brought them to the 80’s. There’s an aberration, and a past version of Leonard died.
That aberration? An extra crewmember for Lewis being free on the weekend of a heist because turns out the Time Masters pulling strings had been what kept him away. The heist still failed, but instead of getting busted this extra crewmember was able to get a very ill tempered Lewis out and home free. Where he took out his anger on his pregnant wife, and then his nine-year-old son who ran in to protect his mom and baby sister.
Little Leonard didn’t stand a chance.
Leonard – their Leonard – is back for now, because they’ve traveled back to before Lewis returns home and so the timeline isn’t yet set.
“You ok?”
No, she is not ok.
She’s with Mick, heading to the Snart household to get Little Leonard and his mom out. Their Len is with Ray and Amaya, staking out the heist and making sure the police come early, which they will so long as they act on the tip Zari is sending them.
She glares over at Mick, her expression saying for her how she is very much not ok, and then she sets her eyes forward again.
“His mom is pregnant.” She says as they come up on the house, and Mick hums.
“Yeah.” He agrees, “Time keeps on track, Lisa will be here and pissing everyone off in ‘bout a month.”
“That’s not the point.”
She doesn’t look, but she can feel Mick eyeing her. He gives it a minute, until they’re at the front gate made of rotting white-picket-fence, and he sighs as he nudges it open.
“Believe me Blondie, nothing would make me happier than putting that asshole eight feet in the ground, especially before he hurts Lisa. But if we do that her and Snart become different people.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing.” She mumbles before she can stop herself.
Mick rumbles at the back of his throat and eyes her, but he doesn’t say anything about her choice of words; he knows what she means.
They get up to the front door and he reaches for the knob, but his hand hovers above it, his eyes locked firmly on the door.
“Snart will get his chance.” He says, almost more to himself than to her, before he finally looks at her. “If Lewis shows up here, he made the choice.”
She… She knows he’s right. She still feels sick, and like she isn’t going to be sleeping for a long time after tonight, but he’s right. This is Leonard’s life and his decision. Unless he comes over the comms and tells her otherwise, if Lewis shows up here she won’t kill him; no matter how much she wants to.
Mick opens the door and it creaks open, and right away there’s the sound of movement coming from the kitchen. Its dishes rummaging around, glass, and given the time it’s a safe bet it isn’t a third grade Leonard Snart looking around for a late-night snack.
“I’ll get her.” Mick says, and then nods to the stairs next to them. “You get him.”
She nods; content to let him make the plan this one time, and hurries up the stairs. She doesn’t take enough precaution to keep her footsteps quiet, she wants him to wake up. She does, however, keep them light and quick; because what she doesn’t want is to take the risk he might mistake her for his father.
The upstairs hallway is small, barely five feet long and with two doors on each wall. The first is propped open, a dark bathroom on the inside. The second is closed, but the plush L hanging on it being a soft white color with tiny pink flowers clues her in that it might not be the dwelling of a nine-year-old boy. The next door, however, it has a nameplate with Leonard spelled out on it in crooked stickers and it’s frame is decorated with the images of astronauts and aliens.
She allows herself a tiny smile; letting herself forget for just half a second the reason she is here and instead bask in the peek into Leonard’s childhood.
Then her half-second is over, and with a gentle hand on the knob she turns it and lets herself into the room.
It’s dark, not even the dimmest of nightlights to offer comfort. She wonders, idly, about that. She knows Leonard now prefers to sleep without a hint of light, but she doubts he became that way this young of his own accord.
She decides not to dwell on it, not now anyway. Instead she pads across the room and kneels down next to his bed. His adult self would have heard her by now. He would have opened his eyes; he might even have jumped. But this Leonard is still snoring softly and it breaks her heart that she has to wake him.
“Leo.” She whispers, her hand coming to ghost over his back.
He stiffens, his entire body giving a jolt as is eyes snap open.
“Shh… It’s ok.” She hurries to say. “It’s ok, I know you don’t know me, but I’m a friend of your mom’s. She called me, you guys are going to come with me and my friend for a sleepover.”
God, she hopes little Snart hasn’t been well taught in the art of not getting kidnapped.
He sits up; looking at her in very much the same way her Leonard does when he’s trying to determine where her plan is going to land them.
“Why?”
Her breath hitches as she tries to think of a lie. Except what’s worse is she realizes he’s nine. Leonard has told her Lewis first came after him at the age of eight, and while he didn’t earn himself a permanent scar until eleven, at nine he already knew it was best to avoid daddy when he was angry.
“You’re dad called from work.” She says, watching his eyes for some kind of sign of fear, and she sees it. A flicker, a faint tightening of his body, and it makes her gut twist even more. “Something went wrong tonight, and he’s very angry about it.”
There’s another tightening of his body. His shoulders close in and his eyes flit away from her, and automatically she spreads her fingers out on his back.
“It’s ok.” She promises him, and licks her lips to force herself to continue. “But you’re not safe here.”
He shifts by only the tiniest amount, but it’s towards her, and she needs him to hurry but she doesn’t want to rush him.
“Boss!” Mick’s voice suddenly shouts from downstairs, and Leo jumps where he is. “We gotta move, you coming?”
She looks back to Leo, and she almost wants to call back and see if his mother will yell up that it’s ok, but it’s Mick in charge if getting her. She’s probably unconscious by now.
She dares to put a little more pressure forward with the hand on his back, and he follows it. He lets himself fall into her and wrap his arms around her neck. He’s a little awkward to stand up with and carry, tall enough that he should be walking himself. But she isn’t going to put him down unless she absolutely has to.

.
“You didn’t kill him.”
Leonard – her Leonard – looks up at her, and after holding her eyes for a long moment he sighs and puts his partially assembled cold gun on his nightstand.
“Raymond wouldn’t let me.”
She raises her eyebrow, not that he’s looking anymore. His eyes are downcast, his mouth a firm line, and she gives him time but she’s starting to think he isn’t going to elaborate. That’s fine, she can’t expect him to want to share anything. She’s about to bid him goodnight and then go spend the next six to ten hours sharpening her knives and imagine them carving into the flesh of Lewis-
“I couldn’t.”
His words are quiet, so much so that a part of her thinks she might have imagined them. But then he sighs and leans over to the nightstand again, this time picking up his famous deck of cards and beginning to shuffle them mindlessly.
He glances up at her, and she takes the hint and steps into his room and closes the door behind her.
Even so, it’s some time before he speaks.
“I wanted to.” He finally says, “And you know I could’ve gotten through Raymond.”
He finally looks at her with that, waiting for her to acknowledge his attempt at humor, and she gives him a smirk.
Then it’s back to shuffling the cards.
“But… If I had… then I wouldn’t be here would I?”
He brings his eyes back to her, and she looks away.
“No.” She agrees, “You would’ve had a different life.”
A better life, but she doesn’t need to say that.
“No telling what that might have brought.” He acknowledges, “You wipe the memory of little me?”
She nods, “And your mom.”
He nods this time, and gives the cards another shuffle.
“My and Lisa’s childhoods were… awful.” He says, “Not a day goes by I don’t wish things had been different. Getting the chance…”
He trails off, gathering his thoughts, and she’ll give him that. She’ll give him all the time that he needs.
“Lisa’s happy now.” He finally says, “She has Ramon, and all those other idiots. And I…” He swallows, “I have some idiots of my own. Couldn’t risk that.”
She smiles, and she wants to tease him. She wants to taunt that Captain Cold does have a heart and she’ll never tell. Maybe tomorrow she will, but not right now. Right now he has unshed tears in his eyes, and his face is pale. He’s even less likely to sleep tonight than she is.
So she crosses the room and without a word crawls in to sit next to him on his mattress. He scoots enough to give her space, but she still presses right into his side and lays a hand down over his wrist with hardly any weight to it.
“Good.” She finds herself saying, and she runs her fingers up is hand until she dips them between his knuckles. “Because these idiots would be lost without you.”

1. Does your character have good aim?
Wren: She does, actually. She’s excellent at throwing knives and such, which shocks the hell out of her. 
Whitney: NOPE. Not even a little bit. She wouldn’t try, she would either embarrass herself and say breaking her nail as the excuse not to. 
Blair: Not...really. It got somewhat better with training with Oliver, but...there’s a reason she never played any sports. It’s not really her thing.
Camille: She does now, after training with Clint and Natasha at S.H.I.E.L.D. It took her a bit longer to get it, but she did get there eventually.
Naomi: Yes! She used to play softball when she was in high school, she’s rather athletic. Good luck challenging her to a game of darts. Just saying.  
15. Did your character ever want to be a cowboy?
Wren: No, not at all. She wanted to be a rockstar astronaut at first, something her mother thought was hilarious. Wren swore up and down that Rocketman was about her, but uh...she didn’t really get the lyrics at that young of an age. 
Whitney: Absolutely not. She was definitely a princess kind of girl. Being a cowboy was never her thing, she would rather be the princess or damsel in distress that gets swept off her feet. 
Blair: Not really. She wanted to live on Mars and be an astronaut too. She loves space and always has. Blair grew up to be an astrophysicist though...close enough. 
Camille: I could see that, sure. I don’t think it was specifically a cowboy, I think she wanted to be the Lone Ranger, like the show her father watches. She would make her dad pretend to be a bank robber so she could go after him. 
Naomi: Nope. Not at all. She was more into cops and robbers or princesses, to be honest. Cowboys just didn’t really hold her attention. The only one that could was Woody from Toy Story. 
25. Does your character experience sexism for the job/title they hold? (ie: she’s a girl, she can’t be x,y,z because only boys can be)
Wren: Not necessarily sexism, but Pratt does hit on her and stupid ass comments that piss her off. It’s borderline sexist and she’s borderline ready to punch him in the face.
Whitney: Yes, she does. She was raised treated like that, honestly, and she was raised to believe it’s okay. Joseph definitely treats her like a housewife, even as Mother of Eden’s Gate. She doesn’t know better, even though it really does piss her off. 
Blair: No, not at all. Her coworkers love her and don’t at all think that she shouldn’t be doing what they’re doing. She’s smart and well-respected in her field. And that doesn’t change with the teams at all. Blair isn’t disrespected like that, that’s a big no no. She also helps Mick with being politically correct. 
Camille: It depends on which job we’re talking about. She’s had her fair share as a doctor, her knowledge and rep questioned because she’s female. Now, in S.H.I.E.L.D., she has had moments, but not nearly that many. S.H.I.E.L.D. is known for having diverse agents, and the very few she’s witnessed be assholes, she’s corrected (or Nat has rather quickly.) With the Avengers, it’s a hard no. Her place was earned and she’s respected by members of the team, and those members are quick to address those issues when they witness someone treating her that way (they drink their respect women juice.)
Naomi: As a war correspondent, absolutely. Being told that “this is no place for a girl” was something she received a lot. But she did a badass job at it. Now, S.H.I.E.L.D. was a lot better, for sure. They welcomed her and her skills for gaining intelligence with open arms, she’s a resident badass. Once S.H.I.E.L.D. is taken down, she becomes the PR for the Avengers, in which she’s someone you don’t wanna cross. She becomes highly respected. 
35. Naptime, yes or no?
Wren: YESSSS! That girl loves naps! Give her a slice of cheesecake or some ice cream right before, and she’ll curl up on the couch and nap while watching The Twilight Zone. 
Whitney: Eh, not really. Whit is normally busy with something, and she would rather be doing something productive than nap. 
Blair: Yes! Most of it is because she’s working all hours of the night on something in the lab, so when she gets home, she’s not getting enough sleep. So! Yummy hot cocoa and naps!
Camille: Eh, she’s not known for it because she works a lot during the day, but if it happens, it’s because she’s pulling long hours and needs a break. But Camille isn’t really a frequent napper, it makes her more tired, if she’s being honest.
Naomi: Nah, that’s not really her thing. She’s used to long hours, and knows that if she naps, she won’t be able to sleep that night. So she’ll power through and maybe just go to bed a bit earlier to catch up on sleep. 
45. Would your character kill someone to get what they want?
Wren: Ehhhh...that’s a hard maybe, depending of if we’re talking pre-cult or not. Wren is morally grey, and if she had to have it, she would once she’s joined Eden’s Gate. But before? Not as likely. 
Whitney: Yes! She actually has, to be honest. Joseph and the others pretty much numb her to killing someone, so she’ll poison someone who crosses her. She literally kills with kindness. 
Blair: Absolutely not. Blair doesn’t put her personal needs/wants above the value of others and their lives. She’s very much against that and couldn’t live with herself if she did. 
Camille: I have a hard time seeing it, unless it was a mission in which it needed to be done (her wanting peace, killing bad guys for it, etc), but those are few and far between because she doesn’t do a lot of the things Natasha does. But she is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Naomi: Eh, not really. If it is a “want”, its going to be revenge. But it’ll be with the right intentions and in the name of doing what’s right. She’s not as scared or worried about getting her hands dirty as long as it’s for the right reasons, not necessarily because of something she wants. 
55. Do you have any characters who despite trying their best ended up being horrible parents?
Wren: I think it would depend on how you define ‘horrible’. Because Wren tries her best to be the best mother she can be, but feels as though she’s become her father and failed Harper. Mostly because Wren kept a lot of the Wrath and Judge stuff a secret, and Harper doesn’t take kindly to that. It’s not her being a horrible mom, just making bad decisions that affect her kids (mostly Harper) negatively. 
Whitney: Yes and no. While yes, she protected her son and put him in hiding with Ivy, she still stands by Joseph for the longest time instead of leaving to be with her son and to take her daughter and sister away from danger and toxic relationships. She is able to redeem it, though. Her and Wren both, actually. 
The other three (that I chose to do this for) are good moms, so I don’t think this really applies.
65. Is your character energetic?
Wren: Oh yeah, she definitely can be when she’s comfortable. She can get pretty excited and pumped up, often making Jane, Ivy, and Whit a bit tired. Randy, Gray, and Ro just go along with it, Mel and Quinn join in and encourage it. 
Whitney: Yes and no. She really is, but she tries to keep it on a leash and not show it, because she was raised being told that it wasn’t lady like. The more she grows (as a character) and hangs with the rest of the group, she loosens up a bit. 
Blair: She can be when she’s had too much coffee. Blair is naturally mellowed out though, often being more calm. She’s not reserved at all, she just...has more of a calming upbeat presence. 
Camille: Sorta! It depends on the situation, she’s more reserved when you first meet her. There are moments when she’s with friends that she does absolutely get energetic, but she’s mostly energetic after working out or going for her morning jog. 
Naomi: No, not particularly. Like Camille, she’ll get amped up for a workout, and there may come a time where she’ll get energetic over a big event, but she’s not one to get super energetic. 
75: Do any of your characters wear glasses, sunglasses, goggles, or monocles?
Wren: She’s obsessed with aviators. She collects them, and they’re usually blue, silver, or black. She eventually steals John’s because she digs them. 
Whitney: If she’s gonna wear sunglasses, they’re either the 50′s or 60′s kind. Some cat-eyed, or those bigger glamorous butterfly styled ones. But she does have some nice Gucci and Coach glasses she’ll wear. It depends on what matches. 
Blair: She’ll wear regular sunglasses, mostly Ray Bans. She wears reading glasses from time to time, but she mainly uses contacts. Blair has a pair of backup glasses that have the tinted lens. 
Camille: She used to wear glasses when she was younger, but she eventually got Lasik, so she doesn’t wear them anymore. As for sunglasses, she wears modern cat-eyed or just rectangle ones. Anything that looks good and is her style. 
Naomi: Aviators, and that’s really it. She’s not really big into them, she has one pair of brown aviators, and that’s it. They do the job. 
85. Has your character ever been led down the wrong path because of their anger?
Wren: Absolutely. That’s the whole point of her canon, actually. The Wrath leads to her joining Eden’s Gate and becoming the Judge. She eventually redeems herself, but it does lead her down a dark path. 
Whitney: Yep. She starts killing for Eden’s Gate because of it, but it’s funny, because it’s her anger that actually helps her redeem herself and gain her freedom: killing Joseph and Ethan. 
Blair: Yes and no...? Kinda...? Like, when she woke up from her coma, she found out Carmen had left her for someone else, essentially moving on. The anger is what led to her maybe running into some unfavorable company (Leonard), where she decided to just give him her engagement ring instead of running the risk of him robbing her at the bar they happened to run into each in (his favorite bar). In her anger, she purposefully went to a bar that was known to be a frequent place for criminals. But that anger also had her moving to Star City, where she became a hero. Sometimes her anger can get her in trouble with her powers, but that gets better. It all depends on how you look at it. 
Camille: Sort of. The Civil War incident really...was something else. Camille didn’t see it as a dark path, it was what she believed was right. She was angry that something so wrong went down in Lagos, so she sees the need for restrictions and boundaries. Her siding with Tony caused turmoil between her and the others, even Steve, and it led to a huge fight at the airport while trying to bring them in. Rhodes getting hurt added salt to injury. Later, it’s shown to her that perhaps choosing the Accords was the wrong path after all. 
Naomi: Depends on how you look at it, honestly. As head of Public Relations for the Avengers, most just assumed that Naomi would be in agreement to the Accords, but she’s not. She’s angry that the government is trying to have control over them, especially after with what happened with S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra, she even says that to Camille when they’re fighting about it. She fully believes Steve and sticks with them as things become divided, and she becomes a fugitive right along with them. So, depending on what side you’re on, it’s either yes or no. 
95. If given total rule over a country, would your character step aside to turn it into a democracy?
Wren: I think this depends. I think, yes, for the most part. Wren isn’t one to be a leader, she would rather not, but can rise to the occasion when needed and if she knows it’s better she’s in charge. But she would want everything to be fair and such. It would have to be a true democracy. 
Whitney: I see her as keeping control, honestly. Whit is the kind of person that will claim she knows best, and maybe she does, but she wouldn’t relinquish control. Not when she’s never been allowed to have it. If given the opportunity to do so, this queen would absolutely rule. 
Blair: Absolutely. She would try her best to set it up with the right candidates, honestly. She wouldn’t want to put anyone in the wrong position where they can do harm, but politics are honestly not her thing. 
Camille: Yes, without hesitation. I could see her turning to Steve, because who else would know better than Captain America (and no, not that knock-off Gucci Captain America they have on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier--we don’t support Walker in the Camille and Steve household), so she would ask who would be better to hand it off to.
Naomi: She would give that up so fast, without thought. She agrees fully with Sam when he says that he’s just the soldier, because she feels something very similar. She wants nothing to do with leading something like that, she doesn’t want that responsibility. It’s why she doesn’t really join the Avengers. She has zero interest in leading. 
100. Are any of your characters queer?
Honestly, it’s safe to say that most of my OCs are. I have more queer OCs than I have straight OCs. But I have so many OCs, I’m just gonna list the ones I’ve done so far, and if you wanna know more, you can always send me an ask!
Wren: Bi, hands down. Her first relationship was with a woman named Lilith in college. She honestly preferred women in the beginning because she doesn’t trust men easily. 
Whit: She’s bi, but still in the closet. She hasn’t had a chance to really be with a woman, but the attraction is there, and so it the want to do so. 
Blair: Definitely pansexual. She thought she was just bi for the longest time, but she’s actually pansexual, and she’s comfortable with it. She was engaged to a woman before she went into a coma, and a few hook ups afterwards have been a mixture of genders. 
Camille: Straight. One of the few that I have that is, honestly. She’s tried in college, but it wasn’t for her. She supports it completely, though. One of her best friends is gay, and she went to their wedding. 
Naomi: Bi, definitely bi. She’s had a mixture of men and women in her dating history, but ultimately none of them worked out because it’s hard to have a personal life when you’re in war zones for the sake of journalism or working for S.H.I.E.L.D. where you’re undercover often in order to gather intelligence.

Prompt- Nate doesn't know why you don't wear his clothes.
It had nerved Nate to no end when he realized what Sara had pointed out to him the other day.
It had been a rare day were there were no missions and everyone got to do things they rarely got to do. Sara and Ava were cooking together, Mick and Leonard were having a day in to freeze and burn things. Ray was visiting the local museum. , Jax and Stein were doing whatever it is they do in their lab. Nate was waiting on you in the living room so you could binge watch the Star Wars movies.
The open floor plan allowed Nate to hear from the living room, Sara was talking loud to Ava in the kitchen that. Nate didn’t realize Sara was trying to get his attention until she threw a banana at him.
“Hey, what the hell was that for?” he turned towards her, rubbing his head where the banana made impact.
“So what do you think y/n is going to get you for your birthday?” She asked excitedly.
“I don’t know, was that question really that important for you to throw a banana at me though? He said still rubbing his head, while exaggerating his motions even more.
“He does have a point, Sara.” Ava budded in.
“Well excuse me for trying to help you by passing along what you might like to get from your precious “girlfriend”, but I guess she will just do what me and Ava do.” she shrugged, continuing to cut some vegetables.
This intrigued Nate.
“What exactly is it that you and Ava do?”
“Well you know,” she looked to Ava then back to him like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Um, no I don’t”
“Well, you know. We buy something that we like so we get to use it too. Like that one shirt that Ava always wears with the stripes and the long sleeves? She gave that to me because it was soft and warm so she could use it too. This sweater Im wearing, I got it for her on our anniversary because I like the material. Most girls do this after they start borrowing their boyfriends clothes,” she told him like it was the most obvious thing in the world, but it wasn’t. Not to him.
“She doesn’t wear my clothes,” Nate mumbled, dumbfound.
Before anyone could say anything else, you walked in and right over to Nate and gave him a quick peck to his check before you got started on your marathon. What the two of you were watching was the last thing on his mind that night. All he could think about was why you never wore his clothes? He never really noticed how the other girls wear their partners clothes until Sara said something about it.
It had been days since he had that conversation with Sara and since his birthday passed. He had hoped that you would gift him something like Sara was talking about, instead he got a tablet full of books that he loved so he could read them anytime, and as much as he loved it, he was disappointed. You could see that but tried not to think too much about it.
Nate was becoming frustrated to no end. He was sparring with you, but he wasn’t focused and you kept getting the upper hand.
You were able to get him on the ground for the fifth time before he huffed and pushed you off of him. He angrily stalked towards the gym doors, ready to leave, but he had to know. He couldn’t keep wondering anymore. He turned to look at you with his arms stretched out in front of him.
“Why don’t you wear my clothes?” He says with a slight growl to his voice. He was desperate to know.
“Excuse me?” you asked, confused. “Why don’t you wear my clothes!” he said louder than he intended to. You had heard him the first time, but you had to make sure. Your shoulders sagged, knowing the two of you were going to to have this conversation sooner or later. Turns out it was sooner than expected. Your mouth opens and closes a few times before answering, afraid of what he would say. “Because they don’t fit,” you huffed and crossed your arms over your chest looking everywhere else but Nate. “What?” He moves to try to catch your eyes. “Because they don’t fit!” you look him dead in the eyes and now he feels like an asshole. With your breath staggering and your eyes filling with tears he saw how hard it was for you to say that. Hands on your hips, you looked up towards the ceiling, embarrassed. “They don’t fit” you sighed. He doesn’t know what to say now. He was blinded by his hurt and insecurity that he never even thought about why you wouldn’t wear his clothes. “You don’t think I’ve tried?” you whisper. You sit on the mats they had been training on, criss cross applesauce and start playing with your shoe laces, not really wanting to look Nate in the eye while you tell him this. “It was a little after we became official. You were on a mission and I couldn’t sleep without you. Days passed with me only getting a few hours of sleep and I was desperate to get a good nights sleep so I got the biggest shirt I could find of yours and put it on. It was the blue henley Ray got you for your birthday that year. When I put it on it felt tight, but not enough that I thought I would stretch it out. But after sleeping in it for the night and taking it off the next morning, I saw how much I stretched it out. I tried everything I could to get it to shrink back. I just ended up buying you a new one and hoped you wouldn’t noticed.” The entire time she was talking she never looked at Nate. Too embarrassed for him to know what had happened. It was an innocent thing. You had missed him and just wanted to feel like he was there while you feel asleep. Nate didn’t know how to respond. He made you feel bad for something that didn’t really matter now. Not if it made you feel embarrassed enough for you to not look him in the eye. He kneels down to your level and gently puts his finger under your chin to turn your head towards him, forcing you to look him in the eyes. “Y/n baby, it’s alright. You didn’t do anything wrong. It’s me for being a jerk and not expressing myself to you in a better way.” “I know, but it’s still not my best moment,” you say, an embarrassed smile adorns your lips. “Besides, I found a solution.” you say with a full on smirk now. Nate, furrows his brows in confusion to what you meant. “I found a way to sleep when your away…” You wait for him to get it, but he still stares at you dumbfounded, having some trouble connecting the dots. You sigh before standing up and taking his hand in yours before dragging him out of the gym and towards the bedroom you both shared. When you get to the bedroom, you motion for him to sit down on the bed while you get what has been helping you sleep at night while he’s away. You come back with something that is so obvious. Of course Nate should have known what it was and why you didn’t try to wear his clothes. He felt you sit next to him and in your hands was something that was his. It was his blanket. It was fluffy and soft. It was warm when you were cold and somehow cool enough to keep you comfortable when you were warm. He doesn’t know how he didn’t think of it. You had got it for him out of no where, he didn’t know why you gifted it to him, but it warmed him so much he didn’t think about it. Now he knows. “I knew I wasn’t able to wear your clothes without ruining them, so I got you the blanket. I hoped you would use it every night so when you weren’t here, I was able to curl up in it. It smells like you and I pretend that you’re hugging me while I fall asleep.” you blush. Nate is grinning from ear to ear. He was worried for nothing, he was worried about you having second thoughts about him (even though you’ve been together for a year). About him not being enough for you to show off by wearing his clothes, and now this is one of the best things he could have imagined. He pushes you down onto the bed, the blanket in-between your bodies and crawls on top of you peppering kisses all over your face before pressing one to your lips. “I love you.” Nate murmurs adoringly against your lips. “I love you, too.”

“What’re you guys doing?” You asked as you finally found Sara and Snart. Mick had grunted and pointed in their general direction which had been more helpful than Gideon confirming they were still on the ship.
“I’m kicking Snart’s ass at cards.” Sara answered. Leonard rolled his eyes and tutted with a smirk.
“Are you sure? He doesn’t look like he’s losing.” You pointed out to her.
“You think I can’t win at cards?” “Sure you can, it just doesn’t look like he’s losing.” You said as you hopped down the steps, pointing to Snart who smirked as you sat near the bottom of the metal staircase. “He’s smiling too much. He’s bluffing or you’re going to lose.”
“Thank you for the advice.” Sara exclaimed playfully. She watched you lean over and sneak a look at Snart’s cards, he let you by tilting them and shot a look at Sara.
Sara placed a card down and you grabbed at one of his cards, setting it down. She objected and laughed when you defended yourself, leaning against the wall next to Snart as he let you take the round. He’d already counted the cards and knew exactly what was in Sara’s hand. There was no way he’d win but by some miracle she managed to lose.
“Well (Y/N) you must be a brilliant card play. Perhaps we should take you to a casino.” He smiled when you stuck your tongue out at Sara and laughed as she complained about you cheating.
“I’ve got to go and help Rip, he needs to move the ship so it might get bumpy.” You said after a few minutes, remembering why you’d come to find them.
“He needs you to help move the ship?” Snart asked quickly. There was a curious cut to his tone but he didn’t look up from the new hand Sara delt him.
“He needs me and Kendra to get ready for the next mission out. I’ve got to pretend to be some celebrity and Mick gets to be my bodyguard. Kendra’s acting as my girlfriend. It sounds fun. It’s been so long since I've gotten out of here.” With an excited smile you rushed off. Ever the bubbly bundle of energy.
“(Y/N) and Kendra.” Leonard said thoughtfully.
“You worried she’ll fall in love?” Sara teased.
“I showed her how to clean my cold gun last week and yesterday I let her call me Lenny. We’re practically married.” Snart quipped. He almost purred as he spoke.
“Oh! You showed her your cold gun huh? How’d she like that?” Sara asked with a teasing jeer.
“Imature Sara. Besides she broke it. I still haven’t figured out how. I had to employ Raymond and the professor to fix it.”
“That’s (Y/N) for you. I’m pretty sure i’m the only reason she’s alive.” Sara said smugly, she glanced quickly at the way you excited and smile.
“Just because you’re smitten with her doesn’t mean you can take the credit for keeping her alive. Besides i’ve done my fair share looking after her.”
“I taught her self defense.”
“Pickpocketing.”
“How to escape a choke hold.”
“How to calm Mick down.” There was a long pause after Snart spoke. That last one was impressive. Mick had been getting antsy. He’d been on bed rest since the last mission you went on with him. Having been in a timeline with real homemade pancakes you took the chance to indulge. Mick stole them when you tried to find some syrup and ate the whole plateful. Having to leave before you could reorder you irritably followed Sara outside. Deciding to get the anger out you tossed a nearby brick off the porch of the restaurant, that was being renovated. The brick slammed into the end of a four by four post which missed you, due to Sara’s quick intervention and narrowly missed Snart and Ray because Snart yanked them out of the way. It did however twirl impressively through the air and hit Mick right between the eyes.
Rip and Jax watched in stunned horror as Mick fell backwards, stiff as a board, and fell on his back.
Kendra was convinced he wouldn’t pull through after Gideon struggled to fix him up. Jax was utterly impressed while you were mortified that you’d conked Mick on the head and took the time to hide from Leonard until Mick came round and the tight set in his jaw relaxed.
Sara and Snart had agreed that there were both amusingly impressed with the hit.
“Still can’t believe she managed to take Mick out like that.” Sara commented with a smile. They both glanced up when you ran back to their stairwell and skidded to a halt.
“Rip needs you Sara and Mick wants to set Gideon on fire… he will not calm down!” You explained quickly. Sara smiled and quickly hopped to her feet abandoning the cards.
“I’m more than happy to help.” Sara insisted.
“Like you could help when it comes to Mick.” Snart said as he gathered the cards, sorting them as he followed after you and Sara. He didn’t miss the quick smirk Sara gave him over her shoulder when you hugged her and dragged her off to find Ray.

“Alright, you two are clear on what we need?” Rip asked over the coms as you and Snart walked away from the party you’d crashed. Snarts arm was around your waist as the two of you walked in step.
“We have to convince them that we’re an engaged couple and play along until they invite us to their creepy party.” Snart muttered. He could feel the two men that were following the two of you. They’d been guarding the doors at the elaborate party. Now they seemed to be following at a distance, pausing every now and then, but never getting too far behind.
 “You need to be sure they’re still following you, they need to see the two of you.”
“We know Rip. Besides we’re being watched.” You answered quickly, pretending to talk to Leonard who looked at you curiously. He knew that you were being followed. He didn’t expect you to pick up on it. “I’ve got that funny feeling.”
At this Snart gave you an impressed glance. It took practise to be able to tell where the feeling of being watched came from and it was more than clear that you too, had spotted your tail.

“I’ve set you up with a small apartment, it’s public enough that it’ll be easy for them to watch you. At most it should take a week. I’ll check in every morning.” Sara explained quickly over the coms.
“A week!” You complained. There hadn’t been an exact timeline of the mission. Though you figured that was Rip’s attempt to get you and Snart to go along with it.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be right there if anything goes wrong.” Sara continued.
“We know we don’t need to worry. We’ve got this. Besides I know how to make a getaway when needed.” Snart said quickly.
“Did anyone else get a weird vibe from them?” Jax asked Kendra and Ray who were frowning at how irritable Sara looked. There had been some bickering as the team prepared for the mission and between Sara and Snart you hadn't spent a second alone since you’d fetched them earlier that morning.
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s just the stress of the job?” Ray offered cheerfully.
“More like they can’t admit they like (Y/N) and she’s not realised that she had an assassin and a career criminal fighting over her.” Kendra said.
“Um… guys… we can hear you on the coms.” You said with a mortified whispyness to your voice. Kendra froze while Ray and Jax looked over at the rest of the team. Sara was blushing and glaring at the screen in front of her. Martin had his head in his hands while Rip looked mortified and un amused.
“Our bad.” Jax muttered.
No one said anything for a while until you’d dug in the bag you had and found the keys Sara had slipped into them at the party. “How exactly are we supposed to play pretend to be engaged? Rip you didn’t give us anything to do.” You asked, breaking the silence.
“Well… in this time period a socialite such as the ones you are impersonating wouldn’t work so much as atted or hold parties and invest in business ventures.” Rip explained, you could hear him moving around the center screen. “Unfortunately it’ll be expected of you to entertain while Snart strikes the deals. But if this works we could get the in we need to get the final artifact.”
At the mention of the elusive artifact, Snart stiffened. He and Mick had been sent in the last time it had popped up and it took the whole team to extract them, choosing them over the artifact. Rip still wouldn’t explain its importance which was a sore subject for the team.
“Well that doesn’t sound too hard.” You mumbled as Snart led you up the stairs to the front door.
“We’ll keep in touch, Martin is going to pose as a rival investor in hopes of getting you some back up if you need it.” Rip explained quickly.
As Snart led you into the house he bumped into you, chuckling as he apologised. You didn’t notice that he’d managed to sneak your coms from your ear. “Got it captain.” He muttered.

The next morning came by quickly. Sara was early in her check in. She found the time to check out the area several times, no one seemed to notice her but she didn’t mind that. Except for Snart. He’d noticed her sneaking around and was waiting at the back door.
When she arrived he leant against the wall ignoring her until she knocked. “You’re here early.” He mused.
“Well neither of your coms are on and I needed to be sure I wouldn’t be spotted.” Sara said. She paused when she realised Snart was wearing a robe, you still hadn’t appeared which was odd because you usually burst into a room at the sound of her voice. “Where’s (Y/N)?”
“She’s tired out after our evening together and I decided not to wake her.”

“You want me to believe that she hooked up with you last night?”
“If that’s what you want to believe then that’s up to you.”
“You two are really ridiculous.” You murmured sleepily. They both turned to look at you. They were both surprised you’d managed to sneak down to the back room without being hard.
“Perhaps if you let us know which you would prefer, Sara and I could come to an amicable agreement.” Snart drawled as he leant against the wall.
“Well don’t you two have a thing for each other?” You asked, gesturing to them both. They shared a look and Sara cleared her throat.
“We might have done, before…”
“Before I accidently nearly killed Mick over a plate of pancakes?” You asked and they shared a look before nodding. “If I figure this out you’ve got to stop competing and being weird.”
Neither of them answered as you approached them. You fixed Snart with a hard look first, his eyebrows raised as he smirked at you attempt at sternness. Then you turned your attention to Sara. Her eyes went wide as you kissed her. Pulling away you turned back to Snart and kissed him too before turning and leaving the room.
“Was that an option?” Sara asked, feeling a little frazzled.
“It is now. You going to come up?” Snart said as he looked from her to the steps that led to the rest of the house with a satisfied smirk spread over his face.

So, it’s the second day of Rip Hunter Appreciation Week.  Today’s prompt is “perfect episode”.  Honestly, this feels more like a fanfic prompt to me, and I only ever write fanfic once per year.  It’s thing.
(One year I did actually write what I’d consider an episode-type fanfic, that’s here, if you’re curious.)
I don’t think this really counts as an ideal episode, per se.  But there was a plot idea I had at the end of season 2 that I would have loved to see in season 3, because I think it would have added some interesting layers.
See, my biggest problem with the end of season 2 was that the resolution of Aruba pretty much made Doomworld pointless.  Doomworld was interesting in its own right.  And there were some interesting lessons learned by our characters, especially Mick.  And yet, because of the way Aruba ended, we got none of that.
Doomworld never happened.
In some ways, I think that’s a good thing.  I don’t think Sara or Amaya, as characters, particularly benefit from having been turned into mindless murderers.  And I wouldn’t want Jax to have the memory of abusing Martin, to the point where Martin couldn’t even stand to be near him.
But Mick, having betrayed the team, learns that he actually doesn’t want to do that.  It’s growth.  (And I suspect that a Mick who remembers Doomworld would have been less likely to betray the team again...and again.)
Rip was driven to the point where he actually assisted his team in willingly breaking time.  That’s fairly important too.
And the thing is, while watching Aruba, I saw something interesting.  There were versions of the characters where it was very easy to tell which one lived and which one died: Sara, for example, had those lovely shirts.  Jax was depowered.  But Mick’s harder to tell.  And Rip’s main difference was a hat.  
At the end of the episode, Mick wants to go to Aruba, something future Mick talked about earlier.  Rip decides that the team is ready to be on their own, and then turns around and fires them in favor of a Time Bureau he’s created after leaving them.
So what if, and this is my proposed ideal plotline rather than episode, because ideally this would cover a season: what if the Rip and the Mick who died were the ones from the Past.  And the Doomworld ones survived?
In a way, I think this would make a lot of Rip’s behavior in Season Three make more sense.  This is a Rip who spent a year in what is essentially solitary confinement, who was driven to help break time itself.  Wouldn’t it make sense then, that he’d be SO adamant about defeating Mallus, if he remembered being one of the people who caused him to exist?
I’ve had trouble with certain of Rip’s actions in season 3.  They weren’t as bad as some of the others, sure, but it’s very hard to imagine the man who couldn’t even kill Vandal Savage in cold blood to save his family would then be so callous about the lives of his fellow Time Agents or watch multiple versions of the same artificial woman die, just to replace her with another one.
But a Rip who spent a year alone, wondering what Eobard was doing to his friends, who ended up helping to break time.  I could see that Rip going to extreme measures to both sideline his original team, but still reluctantly encouraging them anyway.  I could see that Rip becoming just a little callous, as he focuses so much on his goal, which he helped cause, and without characters like Sara, Ray, Jax and Martin to help pull him back.
So I suppose, in my ideal episode, that would have come up.  Ideally, Sara Lance would not have been willing to leave even an enemy in the hands of an organization that she considers totalitarian, especially once she realizes that he’s right and Mallus is a threat.  And that he’s the only one who actually has any real information about it. 
Ideally, there’d be at least an attempted rescue.  And ideally, there’d be a discussion afterward.  Rip’s an anachronism, just like what they used to stop.  He has one purpose: to stop this thing that they caused.  Even if it destroys him.  (And maybe the anachronism thing is something they might have in common.  Which could be quietly acknowledged as well.  I miss the days when Mick had at least some vague semblance of depth.)
Honestly, with the exception of Return of the Mack and Zari, I’d be fine with just getting rid of season 3 entirely,  But something like this would have been very interesting to me.
Alas, they went a different route.

(could you do a romantic x reader oneshot on mick rory: where he develops feelings for the reader (who's a fan of his books) but gets nervous around her when he tries to flirt with her, so he asks the other legends for advice on how to ask her out on a date, even though the reader wants rory to be himself)!
I changed the prompt up a bit but I hope you still enjoy. Sorry for taking so long but I have recently decided to just chill and take a break from writing on the weekends so I hope you all understand!
Mick Rory x Reader: First Date Jitters
      Arrogant. Block-headed. Short-tempered. Obnoxious. Blunt.
      Nervous.
      There were a lot of words that described Mick Rory, very few of them were ever pleasant words, but nervous was never among any of those words. Mick never got nervous when setting fire to fire to buildings, Mick never got nervous when entering a fight, and that’s because nothing could make Mick Rory nervous. At least, that’s what he thought until now. 
      Now, he was sitting at the table of some fancy five-star restaurant that served dinner that was barely as big as a single meatball while also trying to adjust his collar that he swore was actually a noose in disguise. From one glance at him, the other patrons could easily tell he wasn’t the type to go to high-class restaurants or to wear a fancy suit, but they didn’t say anything because once glance at him could also tell you that he wasn’t exactly the type who liked to be called out.
      And he wasn’t but sometimes there were exceptions.
     “Stop messing with your tie.” Ray nagged.
     If it were anyone else instead of Ray, they would’ve gotten a fist to the face. If Ray wasn’t so essential in Mick’s plan to woo, he would’ve just gotten a flick on the nose, but instead Mick did as he was told while also grumbling a few complaints under his breath.
     “Can’t believe I let you guys dress me up like some blue-blood.” Mick scoffed under his breath. Ray only sat on his shoulder, “You want to impress (Y/n), don’t you?”
      Mick paused for a while before leaning back into his chair, “Yeah...I guess…”
      Then the restaurant bell rang, letting employees know when there was a customer entering, but this customer didn’t catch the attention of just the employees. Fluffy (h/c) hair that was all neat and done, an (f/c) dress that not only hugged your curves nicely but also complimented your skin color, as well as the lipstick and eyeshadow you had sparingly put on to enhance your looks just a little. However, you didn’t need to do that with Mick, because as cheesy as it sounded, you always looked pretty to him in his eyes.
     “Alright guys, it’s showtime!” Ray informed the rest of the Legends through the comm on his suit’s helmet.
      “This is a very improper use for the Waverider.” Rip frowned, glowering at Sara. She merely shrugged as her eyes became focused on the holographic projection that Gideon was using and that showed a live feed of what was happening during the date.
      At this point, the rest of the Legends had gathered around the table. Either looking at the screen in interest or making bets with one another about how bad Mick is gonna mess up during this date.
      “Operation: Get Mick with (Y/n) so he can be less of an asshole is a go,” Sara announced before looking at you through your hologram, “but if this fails, we can initiate Operation: Mick gives me (Y/n)’s number.”
     “Don’t even think about it, Girly.” Mick growled under his breath. You had taken the seat in front of him with a wide smile but it faltered when you heard him speak, “I’m sorry, what did you say?”
      “(Y/n), it’s good to see you.” He quickly coughed out, facing towards you and straightening his back a little.
     The smile he gave you seemed forced, not like his usual self, yet you smiled back as best you can.
      “Yeah, it’s been how long now? A year or less?” You tried to recall but then decided to forget it, “I’m just glad to see you, Central City isn’t as fun without my favorite pyromaniac.”
      That rendered Mick speechless, meanwhile, people were freaking out in the Waverider.
     “Well then...at least we know the feeling is mutual.” Stien shrugged while Jax was snickering at the dumbfounded look on Mick’s face. Sara only nodded her head in approval, “Smooth and bold, that’s very sexy.”
     “Shut it, Lance.” Mick hissed under his breath while you furrowed your eyebrows in confusion, “Sorry, I didn’t get that?”
     “Stop talking to them, Mick,” Ray warned. Mick only nodded his head slightly before looking back at you, “It was nothing. So, you were saying you missed me?”
      Nate nodded his head, “That was a nice come-back, I’m proud.”
     You only smiled brightly at his question which he was not expecting, “Yeah, I do miss you, Mick. That’s why I was so happy when you asked me out on this date.”
    Mick only smirked his usual smirk that oozed of confidence as he leaned closer to you.
    “You were?” He mused. You nodded your head happily before looking around, “Yeah but I never thought you’d want to go to a place like...this.”
      That “this” you said was not a good “this”, it was the “this” of disappointment. The one you say when you’re talking about something you dislike but didn’t want the other to know, but Mick could tell by that disappointed tone in your voice as could the other Legends.
     “Do you not like it?” Mick frowned as he leaned back from you. You quickly looked him in the eyes with your stunning (e/c) orbs with an apologetic look on your face, “No, I didn’t mean it like that. It’s nice and all but... I don’t know...Look, it’s a very nice restaurant and I shouldn’t try to bring down the mood. I’m sorry.”
     Mick only furrowed his eyebrows in confusion but Ray merely told him to just let it go, so that’s exactly what he did.
      “No, you’re fine. So um...” Mick suddenly blanked, stunned by the way you were looking at him as if he was the only thing in the world that mattered. Words failed him as was his team as they scrambled to find a good conversation starter.
     “How about how her day was?” Nate suggested. Jax only looked at him like he was crazy, “No, he’s gotta compliment her. Trust me, if you ask someone about their day it just makes you sound like a parent or something.”
     “I like that idea, Ray, tell Mick to compliment her,” Sara ordered. Ray nodded as he whispered into Mick’s ear once more, “Compliment her.”
    “About what?” Mick mouthed, this time you barely noticed it. 
    “Anything! Just try to be decent about it.” Ray explained. Mick looked back at you before clearing his throat with a slight cough, “Your teeth look nice.”
     You looked up at him with a bewildered look on your face, Ray was utterly speechless as he looked as his usually blunt friend in disbelief, and some of the Legends were now freaking out in the Waverider.
      “Please tell me he didn’t just say that. He did not just say that.” Rip shook his head. Jax and Nate were trying hard to not laugh at Mick’s blunder while Amaya only shrugged her shoulders, “I really don’t know what you guys expected, it’s Mick.”
     Sara only chuckled a little before looking back at the screen, “Shut up, I gotta see what her reaction is.”
     You merely shifted in your spot again, not making eye contact with the pyro in front of you.
     “Um, thanks, Mick…” You spoke with a tone that was definitely not happiness or flattery. Still, Mick nervously nodded his head, “You’re welcome…”
     While Mick was silently wishing for his team to suggest a good idea, a waiter had appeared in front of you two while introducing himself and welcoming you to the restaurant.
     “Can I get you two something to drink?” He asked.
     You and Mick could not have said ‘yes’ fast enough. You ordered your favorite beverage but when it was Mick’s turn to order, the annoying pretty boy on his shoulder had to drop a kernel of wisdom.
     “Just to let you know, not a lot of girls like to kiss a guy who reeks of alcohol.” Ray reminded.
     With those words, Mick’s mind went blank once more while both you and the waiter looked at him expectantly.
     “Um, Sir?” The waiter finally said after a few seconds went past.
     “Mick.” You hissed, hoping to grab his attention.
     “Apple juice.” He finally answered.
      Both you and the waiter were caught off-guard, his answer only caused more laughter among Nate and Jax while Rip had to exit the room for a while since he couldn’t handle all the ‘rubbish that was happening’ at the moment.
    “Apple juice?” The waiter repeated, hesitant to write down his order. Mick nodded with a grunt, “Yup…”
     You studied Mick for a while before standing up from your spot, making both him and waiter look at you in surprise.
      “(Y/n)?” He asked as you began to walk away.
      You pretended not to hear him and put your coat on, storming out of the restaurant. Mick stood up from his spot, chasing after you and leaving the other patrons murmuring amongst themselves, and the Legends soon became silently glued to the projection that showed him chasing after you. It didn’t take long for him to catch up with you considering he’s pretty fit and you were also wearing high-heels.
      “(Y/n)? What was that?” Mick frowned, grabbing your shoulder. You turned around to face with a very disgruntled look on your face, “What was that? What was that in there, Mick? Why were you acting so weird?”
     “Weird?” Mick repeated, hoping he could play it off being dumb. However, you knew him better than that, “Yes, Mick Rory, you were being weird in there. Complimenting my teeth and ordering apple juice, my Mick wouldn’t do any of that...actually, he would probably do the first thing but never would he pick juice over booze!”
     Mick only stared down at you speechlessly, once more finding you beautiful despite the severe look of annoyance you were giving him.
      “You’re right,” He finally admitted, “I was acting weird.”
      “Why?” You interrogated.
      Rip re-entered the room, watching with as much fascination as the other Legends the scene unfolding and waiting for what Mick was going to say in response to you. Mick took a deep breath before nervously scratching his neck, his eyes unable to look at yours.
      “I...I had the Legends help me out,” He finally confessed, “They were talking to me and Ray.”
      You furrowed your eyebrows, “Ray? Where was Ray?”
       Suddenly, a loud sound, as well as a flashing light, startled you and you turned around to see that Ray Palmer, all decked out in his Atom suit, was indeed with you and Mick.
      “Hey, (Y/n)...”He greets awkwardly. You gasped softly before turning to Mick with that still angry look in your face, “I can’t believe you.”
      Then you turned away from him, pushing past Ray as you walked from the two. Mick only scoffed at himself while Ray hesitantly put his hand on Mick’s back and patted it in a comforting manner.
      “I’m sorry but...maybe there’s one thing we can try?” Ray frowned. Mick only snorted doubtfully, “Really and what would that be, Haircut?”
     “Maybe you could try being yourself?” Ray suggested, “Without us eavesdropping?”
      Mick only looked at him before looking back to you. With a heavy sigh, he shrugged and chased after you while throwing the camera on the ground.
      After all, what more did he have to lose?

      The Legends whispered anxiously as they kept asking Ray what happened or why Mick was taking so long.
      “I don’t know, I just left,” Ray shrugged, “We should’ve just let him do it himself.”
       That caused another wave of mumbles before Gideon announced Mick was now entering the Waverider. Everyone now watching the entrance intently as the broadly built man walked into the main center of the room.
      “So?” Sara asked the question everyone was thinking.
      Mick only looked at her before holding up a piece of white paper with a number scribbled on it and showing off the lipstick kiss on his cheek.
      “No thanks to you guys.” He grumbled before walking off.
     Everyone frowned at his behavior but soon they all smiled when he shouted back, “but thanks anyways, I guess.”
      Operation: Get Mick and (Y/n) together so he can be less of an asshole. Completed. Sort of.

S.T. REWRITE - S2:E7; Chapter Seven, The Lost Sister - [Pt. 5]
A Will Byers x Reader Series
In their search for answers, psychic visions draw Eleven and Y/n to a band of violent outcasts and an angry girl with a shadowy past.

||3rd Person POV||
Jane is lead throughout the warehouse once her strength has returned, herself, Kali and the rest find themselves in a newer room that Jane has not yet seen. She and her sister come face to face with a wall decorated with photographs and documents of various people.
"These are the bad men, as you call them. The ones we believe are still alive. Do you know any?"
Jane's brown eyes sweep the wall, she is careful to take in every face studiously as she scans. Not a single photograph or document, no individual piece of parchment has gone unmarked. The words filter to the back of her brain as she soaks up the images, the only useful information to her. She finds no familiar faces, that is, until her eyes land on a folder news clipping of a bald man caucasian man. But she knew him as the four-fifty man.
The man in charge of hurting her mother. He did it. He hurt her mother, turned her into what she was today. Stuck.
"Him." Says Jane, taking the paper from the wall. "He hurt Mama."
"His name is Ray Caroll," Kali informs. "And he did more than hurt your mother."
[FLASHBACK]
The men step forward, the electrified weapon crackles as he whips it forward towards the cowering young girl. She knows what's coming, she knows the pain all too well.
[END OF FLASHBACK]
"The bad men like Ray, they about us. It's made hard to track. But maybe not anymore."
The anger returns once more and Jane crushes the paper in her hands in a fit of rage. The paper rolled tight in her hands, she now sits in the warehouse her new companions surrounding her as she searches. They watch studiously as she sits almost statuesque, and some begin to grow irritated by the white noise of the static but then she moves. Her face scrunches up into a tight scowl behind her blindfold and she rips the paper in half. She discards the cloth from her eyes and looks to Kali, nodding.
"Gramercy Apartments. Washington and Bethel." Dottie reads, the phonebook hanging lazily in her hands. "That's gotta be it. Right?"
Kali is seated above her at the table and reaches out, taking the phonebook from her waiting hands as sits criss-cross on the floor.
"'Linburn.' Where is that?" Kali asks, leaning back.
"About an hour east." Funshine answers.
"We don't even have a new ride," Mick argues worriedly.
Kali leans forward, a smirk on her features.
"So we swap plates. We have plates, right?"
Axel looks to her incredulously but nods anyway from where he is seated beside Jane. "Yeah..."
"It's risky," Mick adds, beginning to pace.
The sly smirk returns to Kali's lips as she looks to her friend. "Where's the fun if there's no risk?"
"We want to give my sister a memorable first day, right?" She asks, a gleaming look in her eye as she looks to Jane.
"I'm in," Funshine quips, a kind smile directed at the girl. "For Miss Jane."
Jane smiles, and Axel sighs exasperatedly as he waves his beer can in the air exaggeratingly.
"Yeah, sure. Why not? Mick?"
Every eye falls to the woman and she sighs at the sky, shaking her head despite the ends of her lips curling into a smile. She looks to her friends and throws her arms in the air.
"Screw it!"
The group disperses into an organized flurry and Jane finds herself stranded in the middle, unsure of what to do. Though she finds relief when Kali sneaks behind her and gives her a smile and a reassuring squeeze of her shoulders. All around her, the gang prepares. Mick and Dottie wait as Funshine and Axel empty the safe, cocking their guns and checking ammo.
Kali drags Jane back upstairs to the room, for the final touch. Jane sits in the desk chair, albeit a bit confused as Dottie stands over her gauging her color as Kali plucks a dark blazer and shirt from the masses. Jane waits patiently as prods around her head, floating her hair back and adding a strange powder to her eyes and lips.
Finally, the rest of the gang is called up to the room once she is changed and ready, Dottie spins the desk chair and she revealed to as the newest member of their group. They gaze at her awe and there are several gaps and nods of approval.
Dottie folds her arm in as she leans against the wall, observing her work and she nods with a confident smile.
"Bitchin'."
"Bitchin'." Jane agrees.
⊹ ⊹ ⊹
The gang steps out into the sun with great stride, their newest member decorated proudly, her head held high. Like her friend before her, she wears cuffed jeans and black tee. A wool blazer hangs on her body, the sleeves pushed to her elbows but she is comfortable. Happy. Bitchin. Unsheathing the van from the tarp, they waste no time in piling into their "new ride". The can takes off, weaving through the twisted corners and alleyways and even blow past a bust, drawing a wandering eye from a suspicious officer.
The van hits the open road, Mick in the front seat and the others piled into the back. She takes a puff from her cigarette, one hand on the wheel and spares a glance to Axel in the passenger seat and blows a puff of smoke in his face. The music sounds in their ears and he sits bouncing in his seat, banging his head to the music.
In the back, Dottie plays a rhythm in the table as she hangs her head, Funshine nodding along next to her with a smile. Kali digs through the pile of masks, holding out different options for Jane before eventually losing herself in the music. Her head begins to move with the rhythm of the music, her purple hair flying all around her and Jane watches. She smiles in awe, a warmth spreading in her chest, finally feeling a sense of belonging and she allows her own head to sway to the music losing herself in the moment.
Times passes and much to Jane's disappointment the moment ends. The van pulls off the road at George's Gas n' Go and the gang piles out of the van. Jane lingers in the van door at Kali's side as she stares at the gas station uneasily.
"What are we doing?"
"Stocking up."
The duo joins their friends in the convenience store to find them already dispersed as planned. Jane sticks to Kali's side as she stops lingers by the store clerk.
"Hey, your bathroom is leaking."
The man frowns in response, hiking himself over the counter to see a pool of brown water flood out from under the door.
"Oh shit."
"Yes," Kali agrees. "Shit."
The pair watched in amusement as the man scurries over to the bathroom door, tiptoeing over the dry ground in disgust and heads inside closing the door behind him.
Axel stalks around the corner with a cocky smile and mischief in his eyes. He looks around at his mates and gestures eagerly around the store.
"Okay, contestants, you have a minute and a half, let's begin your supermarket sweep!" He cheers gleefully, sliding across the floor arms outstretched.
They sweep the area, Jane wanders down an aisle and picks up an apple. Her eyes venture further down the aisle to find the freezer of frozen treats and she discards the apple without a second thought. Making a beeline for the freezer door, she rips it open and grabs as many boxes of Eggos as she can carry. On the other end of the store, Axel jumps the counter and grabs a plastic bag fluffing out before pulling it with cash from the register. Funshine raids the other freezer for beer and Dottie - having already snatched some useful supplies for her and the other ladies - takes a gander at the selection of sunglasses.
"Hey! Put that back, or I'll blow your head off."
All heads turn to the counter where the clerk has returned and is now aiming a gun at Axel who raids the register. Axel slowly raises his hands, and the clerk steps forward.
"You hear me, freak?"
"Put the gun down," Kali orders slowly, stalking forward carefully her arms in a small surrender.
"Stay back." He warns. "Stay back."
"Darrel," she eases. "Your money is insured. We are only stealing from the war criminal billionaires who own this place. You won't even lose a dime."
As the words calmly leave her mouth, the others stalk forward to her aid in slow cautious steps.
"You won't even lose a dime."
"I said stay back." He spits, stepping forward in view of Jane.
Kali raises her hand further, her stature showing nothing but ease.
"We're on the same side. I promise."
Jane steps closer down the aisle. She has gone unnoticed so far and so she remains. The clerk is in her sights now as she reaches the end of the aisle.
"Stay back." He says once more, gun pointed in Kali's face.
With a forceful scream, Jane steps forward throwing her arm up the man. He is sent flying through the air and he crashes into a stockpile of goods that now surround him as he lays on the ground unconscious. The group gathers as they admire her work.
"Damn, Shirley," Axel marvels.
The sound of sirens quickly grabs their attention and it only takes them a matter of moments before they are safe in the van, loot in hand. Mick is quick behind the driver's seat, having taken watch over the van during the raid thanks to her quick thinking and driving skills, they lose the sirens in a matter of minutes leaving nothing behind but a cloud of dust.
||Reader's POV||
My stomach rumbles and I can feel the sharp edges as it growls. My hand comes to rest on my stomach and I fight a groan. Either I was slowing, or I didn't take into account how quickly it would grow dark. Most likely, it was a combination of both. I haven't eaten since Becky's and it's already getting duller out. I have to squint a bit to see but thankfully my eyes adjusted as the sun slowly began to fade away.
I've been taking breaks every hour and a half or so, and I've quickly come to enjoy them. I've already made a habit of checking my watch and I have to stop myself from checking it every other minute. I debate it carefully in my head and I decide that thirty seconds has been long enough. I turn over my wrist and examine the watch, and it is not a surprise at all to find that second hand has only moved thirty notches.
But eyes to linger on the watch itself and I smile as the memory of receiving the watch come back to me slowly. Dustin gave it to me for my last birthday. He had known I had been eyeing it for a while and he saved up money to pay for it. Well, technically he went splitzies with mom since it was a bit expensive, but I didn't care. I love it.
My smile fades and my stomach turns. I miss Dustin. And Mom, although I know I'm going to get an earful when I get home. Knowing Dustin, when he confronts me about going out on a solo adventure and lying to him not only as a sister but as a party member, he's going to give the silent treatment for a while. And that's just Dustin, I have no idea the extremity of what I'm in for when I return.
||3rd Person POV||
Mick draws the van to a slow as it creeps through the parking lot Gramercy Apartments. The sun has set over the horizon and the headlights sweep over glistening cement and the vehicle pulls to a stop. Mick and Axel turn to face the others, and Mick begins giving orders.
"We should case the place, stick to the routine. We have time."
"We also have her," Adds Kali. "Can you look?"
Jane nods and closes her eyes, the others watch her carefully with more patience than the last. A speck of blood peels from her nostril and her eyelids flutter open.
"He's watching television."
"Is he alone?" Mick asks.
"I saw him. No one else."
"Good enough for me." Kali shrugs.
The others nod in agreement, and Jane fiddles with the plastic doll mask in her hands. Mumbles of agreement percolate from the group and Funshine speaks up, adorning his namesake mask, a pink carebear.
"Let's do this."
The others follow his lead, and soon each face if covered, and one by one they pile out onto the street.

"Punky, what's the matter?"
Ray looks at his drink uncertainly, and readjusts in his Lay-Z-Boy as the man on television storms in the room, flipping on the switch and coming to the child's aid with great worry.
The small girl named Punky pets her dog comfortingly but looked desperately to the man her eyes wide and frightened.
"A nightmare. I dreamt I was in the doctor's office. All of a sudden, he's started to give me a shot in my arm."
Unbeknownst to Ray, the chain lock on his door silently unlocks itself in the other room as the frightened child on the television set continues to describe her nightmare. As he listens, he realizes it is not his drink that has left the bitter taste on his tongue.
"Then the needle got bigger and bigger and bigger..."
The chain comes undone and dangles tauntingly against the wooden door, scratching it lightly and the TV pops, the screen going dark. With a grunt, he rises from his seat and reaches the set, fiddling with the knobs to get it to work. Out of sight, Kali is the first to enter the apartment, followed closely by Jane and Dottie and the rest.
"Hello, Ray."
The man whirls around, his heart pounding in his chest to find four masked figures standing in his living room.
"Jesus Christ!" He pants, running for the door.
He comes to halt to find a masked Funshine blocking the exit. Funshine stalks forward, getting in his face.
"Sit down. Please."
Ray continues to back up, the larger masked man never ceasing his advances and he is backed into his spot in the living room. He grabbed by the shoulders suddenly and thrown into the chair.
"I said sit." He spits.
He holds out a trembling hand, too afraid to meet their eye.
"Just, please... just take whatever you want."
Axel, leans forward mockingly, his hands on his knees. All the man sees is the tallest of the bunch with a spikey mohawk - which added to his already intimidating height - and contextually unsettling mummy mask over his face.
"Oh, we will." He growls.
Dottie imitates his moves, leaning forward behind her clown mask and tilts her head. "Where's your wallet?"
"Bedroom. My bedroom. My jeans." Ray stutters, gesturing around the corner and Dottie disappears pulling Axel with her.
Funshine stands guard at the only exit at attention, arms crossed his large frame blocking anyone from moving. Axel and Dottie raid his bedroom, stealing not only the money from his wallet but pills from his drawer and anything else of cash value. Meanwhile, El and Kali stand over the cowering man who looks between them swallowing thickly.
He expects the worse, but much to his surprise the taller girl - the one he knew was in charge - took off her mask revealing a familiar face. She glared at him, before giving the ok to her companion. She complies, peeling back the doll mask to reveal a young face. The leader raises a brow.
"Do you remember us?"
Not daring to speak a word, he shakes his head no. The girls do not move but every light, every bulb in the apartment flickers violently. The entire room flashes like a funhouse with a sharp hiss furthering the illusion. The lights darken completely for a brief moment and when they return he is shown two small girls, all too familiar.
"What about us?" The braided girl asks. "Do you remember us, Ray?"
He gapes in fear and the lights flicker once more, the older girls return and he met with a strong right hook to the face. He falls to the ground, hissing in pain where he know rests on his hands and knees. Pleasingly, he looks to their angered and vengeful faces and begins to weep as they did all those years ago.
"Please. Please."
"You hurt Mama." The younger girl spits, disgust and hatred dripping from her voice.
Yet another forceful scream erupts from her throat and she whips her arm out, Ray is sent flying with it. Like the clerk, he is sent into the wall where he lays now cowering in pain and fear. The pale girl with dark eyes marches forward, disgust and rage in her eyes at a mere glance. Her shoulders move rapidly, her breathing increases as she tries to control her hated but it too strong.
Blood drips from his scalp, and his whole body is shaking. He cowers as far as he can into the broken wall, though he can't escape. Kali watches in a trance as she finds the man who haunted her memories and cowered as she did under his wrath. She did nothing to stop Jane as she advances.
"Wait..." he croaks, his voice barely audible. "Wait, please... I just did what he told me to do."
Jane tilts her head, hot angry tears flood her vision but she does not let this break her focus or her goal.
"He said she was sick." He wept.
"You had a choice, Ray," Kali says, her voice stern. "And you chose to follow a man you knew was evil."
Jane throws her hand up and he flinches violently.
"No, wait! No, wait! Wait!"
Jane falters, though her anger does not.
"I can help. I can help you find him."
Kali's jaw clenched and she speaks through gritted teeth. "Find who?"
"Brenner! I can take you to him."
This is enough to shake Jane's confidence. She can feel herself breaking at the mention but it only fuels the emotion. Her eyes cloud and she tries desperately not to allow her voice to break.
"Papa is gone."
Ray shakes his head, a mixture of regret, pity, and guilt cross his face.
"No, he is alive."
"Don't lie to us, Ray."
The man's shoulder begins to shake and he is crying once more, tears streaming freely from his cheeks.
"I'm not lying!" He croaks, his voice falling into pitiful whimpers. "I swear... he trusts me."
Jane watches in horror, her stomach flipping and her heart clenching into impossible knots she fears it will stop beating. She refuses to believe it, she does not want to. She can't.
"I'll take you to him." Ray eases.
"If he is alive, Jane will find him. Just as she found you. Do it, Jane."
But Jane is frozen, she battles the fear of the horrid possibility and yet the image of him replays in her mind on a torturous loop. Four-fifty.
"Do it."
Four fifty.
"Wait."
The man is pulled slightly from the ground, his hands clawing desperately at the invisible hold around his neck. He chokes and gasps for air as Jane scowls at the man, her hand outstretched and clenched. He topples to the floor completely, and his eyes begin to roll back in his head as he slowly moves across the floor from her forceful hold. Jane only looks at him as nothing more than something brought in on someone's shoe.
She follows him, her grip still firm and Kali trails behind her proudly, whispering in her ear.
"Not too quickly." She suggests. "He wasn't so generous with your mother."
Jane watches with satisfaction as he slides across the tile floor, his face turning purple and his going bloodshot. Veins pop from his head and she feels strength in his pain. But her eyes drift to the broken frame near his head. It was him, smiling, his arms wrapped around two young girls.

Axel and Dottie reach the final door in the hallway and swing it open. Their stomachs drop when their eyes land on the sight of two young girls hiding in the corner, clinging to one another and a working phone, 911 on the other line.
"Oh, shit."

Jane releases her grip, her strain lifting and she begins to paint. The man coughs and gasps for breath, but he is relieved. Kali looks to Jane frantically.
"What's wrong?" When she receives no answer, she asks again louder and harsher. "What's wrong?"
Axel appears in the hallway, gesturing to the open door behind him where Dottie appears.
"We got a problem."
"Kids in the apartment." Dottie pants.
"Please..." Ray whimpers.
Kali desperately returns her attention to the task at hand, urgency creeping up.
"Did he show your mother mercy? No."
Ray's cries go ignored as Kali continues to whisper to Jane, her motives and wounds pushing her and Jane stands to stare at the pleading man. Torn.
"He took her from you, without hesitation."
"Please don't. Please."
"We got to go, K!" Axel shouts. "They called the cops."
"We finish this first." She snaps, returning to the girl. "Jane, now!"
"Please don't... Please. Please."
Unable to waste any more time, Kali whips out her gun, pointing it at the man who shrieks in fear. Jane's attention snaps to her hand and with one swift flick of her head, the gun flies across the room and crashes through the window, shattering the glass. Kali looks disbelieving at Jane, fire in her eyes seething and for the first time, Jane falters. Her eyes flicker to the ground and once again she feels like a scolded pet, nothing more than she was in the lab.
"Kali, we gotta go!" Axel shouts, running down the hallway Dottie on his tail.
Sirens were approaching and only then did they snap out of their trances. They fled down the apartment and out of the back door and down the stairs. They fumble across the grass out back, the police already swarming the apartment from the parking lot. Just in time and as promised, Mick pulls the van to a halting stop at the curb where it waits for them
The van is in motion before the door closed and when they find themselves ok the open road, Kali begins to speak. She turns to Jane, who sits beside her, her arms folded in and she closed off. Tears streak down her cheeks but this does not lessen Kali's venom.
"If you wanted to show mercy, that is your choice. But don't you ever take away mine. Ever. Do you understand?" Her voice raises as she gets in Jane's face. "Do you understand?"
Jane flinches, her breathing still heavy and spotty but all she can do is look away swallowing the bitter taste.

Legends of Tomorrow, Season 5
I was going to write weekly reviews of this season, and then with one thing and another ended up dropping it in the spring (hey, remember when there was so much weekly TV that you couldn’t keep up with all your shows? Wonder how long it’ll be before that happens again). I caught up with the entire season this weekend, and honestly, that feels like a better standpoint from which to write about it - I think if I’d stuck with weekly reviews, I would have ended up saying the same thing week after week.
A couple of years ago, Emily VanDerWerff suggested that there is a standard lifecycle for high-concept, large ensemble, off-the-wall genre shows: 
Season 1: still figuring this whole thing out 
Season 2: now we’re cooking with oil 
Season 3: we can do anything! 
Season 4: whoops, no, we’ve gotten a bit over our skis here 
Season 5: ??? 
Legends, I think, encapsulates this progression to a T. The show’s second and third seasons were some of the best and most exciting genre storytelling on television, but last year was a bit of a mess. That’s not entirely the writers’ fault - Nick Zano’s limited availability due to family obligations forced them to beef up the Time Bureau’s role in the season, and their desire to keep Maisie Richardson-Sellers on board even after Amaya’s story had wrapped up led them to create a character, Charlie, who had no real reason for being on the Waverider. But a lot of it was self-inflicted. The cast was too unwieldy, the Time Bureau story seemed designed to expose the thin spots in the show’s self-presentation as irreverent but fundamentally compassionate (it certainly didn’t help that the decision to rewrite Nate Sr. into a good guy was made almost at the last minute, requiring the entirely unconvincing argument that forcing magical creatures to perform in a circus act is somehow morally superior to forcing them to be secret agents), and some of the character choices felt entirely parachuted in (Zari/Nate, anyone?).
Season five, therefore, had a lot of clean up work to do, while also demonstrating that the Legends formula had more life in it than just those two transcendent early seasons. And while this is undeniably a more successful, more enjoyable season than the one preceding it (which also does a great deal to address some of the show’s structural issues, chiefly the overlarge cast), I also can’t help but notice that instead of finding new places for the show to go, what the fifth season delivers instead is a hodgepodge of story elements from seasons two and three. So we’ve got a mystical object that can rewrite reality (The Loom of Fate vs. season two′s The Spear of Destiny); a token hunt across time and space in which the Legends face off against the estranged relatives of one of their members (the totems in season three vs. the search for the pieces of the loom, Amaya’s evil granddaughter vs. Charlie’s evil sisters); a late season loss that forces our characters into a nightmarish alternate reality in which they don’t even remember who they are (the Legion of Evil rewriting the Legends’ lives to make them ordinary and unsatisfying vs. being stuck in TV shows in a world run by the Fates); which comes about because of a betrayal by a member of the team (Charlie in season five, Mick in season two) whose eventual return to the fold enables to Legends to win in the end. There’s even an abandoned, abused girl who has turned evil, and has to be won back to the side of good through the offer of true companionship and understanding (Nora Darhk vs. Astra Logue).
This isn’t exactly a bad thing - a lot of these storytelling beats cut to the very core of what Legends is and what makes it work, so it’s not necessarily wrong for the show to repeat them. And even if the basic structure is the same, Legends just keeps getting more adventurous in how it delivers that structure. I’ve already written about how well done the season’s mockumentary episode was, and the same can be said for the 80s slasher movie riff, the Mr. Rogers parody, and of course, “The One Where We’re Trapped on TV”. Like the multiple universe episode in season four, these are things the show couldn’t have done when it was just a few seasons old, and they’re proof that whatever other issues it has, Legends is constantly pushing the envelope in terms of the kind of tropes and genres it can graft onto a superhero template. That said, there’s a very real possibility that this is all the show will ever be - a standard story template, enlivened by increasingly gonzo riffs on existing tropes.
Some more thoughts on where the season worked and where it didn’t below.
THE GOOD:
I really hated the decision to make Nora a fairy godmother in season four, not least because it felt like yet another way of infantilizing her (it certainly didn’t help that it was a choice she was forced into, and that she spent the remainder of the season catering to the every whim of Gary, a character I still have very mixed feelings towards). But season five really reclaims that choice. Having Nora embrace the fairy godmother life as a way of both helping children and working through her own issues makes a lot of sense, and the character feels happier and more confident than we’ve ever seen her (certainly a step up from how gloomy she was last season). I even like the wardrobe change - once the fairy godmother dress was ditched except for specific occasions, having Nora dress all in teal is a nice touch, and certainly an improvement over her rather boring season four wardrobe. I still think Legends missed a lot in how it handled Nora last season (I will never stop being annoyed that she and Sara didn’t develop a deeper friendship, given how similar their life trajectories have been), but this was a good way of righting the ship, even in a very limited timeframe.
I already mentioned this in the episode review, but watching the rest of the season really cemented my admiration for how quickly the show embeds Behrad into the crew, and makes it feel as if he’s always been there. That’s all the more impressive given that Behrad doesn’t really get an arc in season five. Most of that storytelling energy goes to establish Zari 2.0, and Behrad is, of course, absent for much of the latter half of the season. And yet he feels almost instantly like a fully-rounded character who is integral to the show, so much so that you’re heartbroken by his death (and convinced that it will be rolled back, even though Zari could easily take over his superpower). That’s really excellent work by both the writers and Shayan Sobhian.
I was a bit nervous when Zari 2.0 was introduced, because replacing a heroic, cool-girl-coded, nobly self-sacrificing character with a version of herself who is extremely femme-coded and obsessed with things like fashion and social media is the sort of move that is ripe for easy misogynistic point-scoring in the guise of feminism - of course the Zari who is good with machines and eats donuts is superior to the one who has a perfume line and spends hours in the bathroom every morning! But the show very quickly established that Zari, though certainly not without her flaws, is awesome in any guise, and it did so without trying to change her into “our” Zari, eventually even establishing that they are two completely different people, each with a right to exist (though not simultaneously, unfortunately). I get why the show didn’t keep both Zaris around - it would be asking a lot of Tala Ashe to play two characters, much of the time against herself, not to mention a production nightmare - but I appreciate that it didn’t decide that Zari 2.0 was the lesser version. (Also a nice touch: Behrad, though obviously fond of Zari 1.0, doesn’t think of her as “his” sister, even though to us she’s the “real” version of the character.)
Similarly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when Ava moved to the Waverider full time - obviously, it would be an improvement on her playing a tinpot fascist at the Time Bureau while the show pretended that this wouldn’t really bother Sara, but at the same time Sara and Ava are both so similar in their functions and abilities that I worried they’d step on each other’s shoes. Instead, the show leaned into their differences and made the season about Ava finding her place as captain of the Waverider, a role she fills in very different ways than Sara while still doing a good job at it. It also allowed her to expand her point of view a little - bonding with Zari 2.0, or reaching out to Astra, both things that would have been outside of her comfort zone in the past. Obviously, this is setup for Ava taking over as captain in season six now that Sara has been abducted (though I hope not for very long - Legends isn’t Legends without Sara), but good on the show for taking the time to bring Ava to a point where she’s ready for this, and in a different way from Sara.
And speaking of looking ahead, the show takes the wise step of thinning out its cast. Personally, I would have kept Ray, Nora, and Mona and written off Constantine and Nate (and possibly also Gary), but either way, it’s good that the writers realized their cast was getting unwieldy. I was concerned, for example, that the show figuring out what to do with Charlie and giving her an elaborate backstory was a sign that she would stay on, but instead she leaves once that story is resolved. And I think that in an earlier season, Astra would have been positioned to stay on the Waverider after the end of the season, but instead she’s clearly a one-off character, who goes off to live her own life once the show has brought her story to a satisfying conclusion. (This also, however, means that Legends has written off two black women in a single season, not to mention Mona, and in fact has only one WOC main character remaining; I hope that’s something season six addresses.)
THE BAD:
I realize that I am very much in the minority on this, but I’m sorry: John Constantine does not belong on Legends of Tomorrow, and certainly not as a main character. Season five feels, in fact, like a perfect demonstration of this simple truth. The early parts of the season feel like two different shows, the Legends show and the Constantine show, that happen to have some points of intersection and shared characters. And even once those storylines converge, it’s notable how John’s quest for the Loom of Fate very quickly becomes Astra’s quest for it, and then Charlie’s, and how they both feel more grounded in that story and more affected by it than he was. What it comes down to, once again, is that John Constantine is a character who can’t change, and putting him on a show that is all about change and growth can’t help but feel unsatisfying for both the character and the show. Season five tries to suggest that change is possible for him - he finally comes clean with Astra and make a real apology to her; he admits that his pursuit of magic has cost him relationships and a chance at happiness; he reaches out to his friends when he thinks his life is about to end; he even quits smoking. But the character just doesn’t have that much give in it. To be John Constantine, he has to be the cynical, arrogant, self-destructive fuck-up we’ve always known. On a show like Legends of Tomorrow, that can work in small doses, but not as the main character that Constantine has been positioned as.
Though I’m glad that the show figured out something to do with Charlie before writing her off, the similarities between her story and Mick’s can’t help but shed a light on how poorly thought out this character has been, and how much her season five story is parachuted in. When Mick betrays the team at the end of season two, it’s barely a season after they’d put him off the ship for being perennially untrustworthy, leading to him becoming their nemesis. They only take him back out of pity for the decades of torture he suffered, and sympathy for the loss of his only friend, Captain Cold. His betrayal is a direct outcome of those cracks in the relationship - he does it because he wants to live in a world where he hasn’t been hurt or hurt others, and where his friend is still alive. When he changes his mind at the end of the season, it’s a culmination of two seasons of character growth, the realization that holding on to the pain in his life is worth it if it means he gets to keep the friendships he formed on the Waverider, and to continue to grow as a person - as expressed by his choice to put Snart back in his timeline, where he will become a better person (and eventually inspire Mick to do the same) but will also die. Charlie’s very similar storyline just doesn’t have this kind of depth. Neither her heel turn nor her face turn feel particularly earned, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that it took the writers so long to figure out who this character even was.
For a season of Legends, this was an awfully heteronormative stretch of episodes. Sure, Sara and Ava are still center stage, and that’s fantastic. But every other romantic relationship in the season, and there are quite a few of them, is a straight one. You might blame this on the fact that season five is a housecleaning season, wrapping up dangling storylines like Ray/Nora or Nate/Zari. But even the new characters like Behrad or Lita express only opposite-sex attraction (I guess Astra never demonstrates a preference). I mean, if you give John Constantine two different love interests in a single season and they’re both women, surely something has gone terribly wrong?
And speaking of John Constantine’s love interests, is putting him together with Zari meant to make the old her’s romance with Nate look organic and true to the characters in comparison? Because I can’t think of another reason for it. Do not want.
THE UGLY:
Words cannot express how much I hate the Damien Darhk episode. Not all of it, obviously - the Mr. Rogers riff, as I said, is pretty good (and pays off handsomely later in the season), and pretty much all the Ray/Nora stuff, especially the moment where she realizes she’s not going to lie to her father about the man she loves and the life she’s chosen, are golden. But it is simply mind-boggling that after two seasons in which Nora was firmly established as the survivor of a lifetime of abuse, Legends takes an entire hour to not only rehabilitate Damien, but pretend that he was always a loving father who just made some mistakes. For crying out loud, the man fed his daughter to a demon in order to gain power for himself. It was always an interesting wrinkle in his character that he clearly saw himself as a loving, protective parent, and was even capable of some level of self-sacrifice on Nora’s behalf, but I had assumed that the show realized this was at least partly a self-serving lie. To discover that we’re actually meant to think that one act of sacrifice cancels out a lifetime of abuse is nauseating. I wanted Nora to stand up to her father, but as a victim calling out her abuser, not a loving daughter trying to renegotiate a relationship with an overprotective parent. It certainly doesn’t help that the episode features inexplicably popular wedding story tropes, such as the groom asking the bride’s father for permission to marry her, or the father trying to keep the couple from physical intimacy before the wedding, which are gross in any context but especially so here. I suppose in the end it’s all worth it to be rid of Damien once and for all, but I was squirming with discomfort and rage throughout the entire episode.

“So Guys” Sara says and take another sip of her beer. “Let´s play truth or dare, but dirty.” Jax starts smiling, Amaya looks really insecure, Stein leaves the room and Mick swallows hard. He has no problems with dare, but truth could get complicated. He knows he has secrets and knows what would happen if they came out, but leaving now is not an option. So he nods and sits down with the others. In the meantime, Sara found two bottles, one empty and one filled with booze, and a few shot glasses. “Come on everyone, let´s sit down” Sara shouts and beckons the others. Hesitantly the rest of the legends sit down in a circle.
“Okay so we spin the bottle and whoever it lands on has to do truth or dare and take a shot. You know easy rules” Sara explains and takes a shot. “And what if we don´t say the truth?” Lenard ask. “Oh you can´t lie” Sara replies as if it were a matter of course “there is a truth liquor in the booze.” Oh shit, Mick thinks This no lies could become a problem. If they ask me about Lenny, I´m gonna be screwed.
Sara spins the bottle and it lands on Zari. She takes a shot and answers ”truth”. Sara thinks a few seconds and then says “was there ever a woman you were attracted to?” and smirks. Zari looks like she´s thinking and then replies “I thought Amaya was really hot when I first met her and I still think it” she winks in her direction. “Oh and Sara of course, I mean, who doesn't find a badass assassin hot.” Everyone nods and Sara blushes.
Zari spins the bottle and it lands on Nate. He chooses dare. “Make out with the Person which the bottle lands on” Nate takes his shot and spins the bottle worriedly. It lands on Snart. Mick clenches his jaw. Nate stands up, so does Lenard. They step up to each other and Lenard put his hand on Nate´s neck and pulls him close. Their lips meet passionately. They open their mouths and their tongues begin to fight for control.
Mick feels a stabbing pain in his heart. He is in love with Lenard since the first time he saw him in this juvenile prison. Mick protected him back then and he protected him ever since. And every single day he wished that Lenard was his. Every night he dreamed of how it would be with him, to touch him, to kiss him. And now Nate is there, living his dream. They finally break away from each other and sit down.
The bottle spins again and lands on Sara, who has to opens about her best sex partners, on Jax who had to strip, Ray who had to open about his and Nora´s sex life, Lenard had to talk about the hottest man on the ship, to Mick´s luck, he put him on number 1.
Leonard spins the bottle and it turns and turns and lands on…. Mick.
Oh shit. Shit shit shit. What am I supposed to do now?? When I take truth, maybe they ask me about Len, what am I gonna answer? And if I take dare, what will they give me? “Hey, Earth to Mick” Sara shouts and snaps in front of his face “What are you gonna take? Truth or dare?” He thinks a few seconds, then answers with a shaky voice “Truth”. Lenard says directly “How do you feel about me?” Damn, Shit, Shit Shit He feels how the words are coming out like word vomit. He can´t hold it back. So he stands up and storms out of the room. Everyone is sharing confused looks. Lenard stands up and follows him.
He finds him in their room. Mick´s sits on his bed, his head in his hands. When he hears Lenard walks in, he looks up. Lenard looks nervously through the area and then sits down on his bed, which is opposite Mick´s. “So what´s wrong with you? Why did you run out like this?” Mick doesn´t answer, instead he stairs at the floor. “Mick” Lenard calls “Talk to me, what´s going on with you?” “YOU ARE GOING ON WITH ME” Mick screams at his face “Every time I go to sleep, I dream of you. Every time I close my eyes all I see is you. Every time I try to think about something, my thoughts are coming back to you. Ever since that day in that juvenile prison, you were my number 1 priority. I´m gonna say it straight away: I´m in love with you, I always was. All I want is to hold you, to touch you, to kiss and to fuck you till you can´t walk for days.” He shuts up and realizes what he just said. Lenard smirks “Well then do it” Mick looks confused “Do it. Fuck the hell out of me, Fuck me till I can´t walk anymore and make me gonna scream your name, so that everyone on this god damn ships know that I´m yours.” While saying this, he walks up to Mick and puts his hand on his chest. Mick swallows hard and suddenly he pushes Len against the next wall. He presses his lips on Lenard´s and moves his hands up and down on his chest. Mick can feels Lenard´s tongue sliding into his mouth and moans. Oh my god, this is better then everything I dreamed of, cause it is real. Lenard turns them around to that Mick´s back is pressed against the wall. Len´s hands are moving to the waistband of Mick´s pants and gliding a finger under it. Mick groans into the kiss. Lenard moves his hand under Mick´s shirt and runs his fingers over Mick´s already hard nipples. Len takes the shirt of and trows it with his own in the corner of the room. Mick moves his hands to Len´s belt and unbuckles it. He puts a hand over Len´s bulge. Lenard moans really loud and presses his mouth on Mick´s neck and starts sucking on it, till he leaves a huge hickey. Mick pushes him backwards till his knees hit the bed and he falls over, Mick right on top him.
When Mick wakes up, he can feel, that the other side of the bed is cold. He sits up and looks around. Where is Lenard? Why did he leave the bed? Was is that bad? He leaves the bed, but on his boxer and walks to the big mirror on the wall. He looks at his reflection and smiles. There is a huge hickey on his neck. I´m not gonna cover this up. Everyone can see that I´m his, especially Pretty. He hears a sound and turns around. There is Lenard, standing at the door with a plate full of food and drinks on it. “Oh I see you´re awake” he says “I was just getting some breakfast for us. I wanted to surprise you.” Mick smiles. “Come here” he answers “We can smile together.” Lenard walks towards him and sits next to him on the bed. Mick opens his arms and Lenard snuggles in.
“So are you planing on getting up soon?” Lenard asks. “No” Mick answers with a smile “I waited so long for you, I´m not leaving you any time soon.” Lenard laughs and gives Mick a small kiss on the hickey “You´re mine now and nothings ever gonna change that” Mick says. Now Lenard gets up and gives him a real kiss “I was always yours, you just didn´t notice it”.
