One of my personal nitpicks for historical fantasy is a lack of servants, staff, subordinates, and... idk... subjects? Like, their absence is not... a total dealbreaker for me, depending on the situations the characters are in and whether or not I can just assume that other people are there in the background... but so many of the protagonists in historical fantasy stuff are higher-ranking (very often royalty), and/or have busy jobs, and/or have enormous houses that would necessitate having at least part-time staff.

Like, girl, you should have a maid! WHERE is your chaperone?! WHO is driving this carriage?! Where are your footmen? Are you trying to imply that a WEALTHY DUCHESS is taking a CAB?! You know that you probably have tenants, right? Where is your steward?! Where is your lawyer? Your accountant?! (Like, yeah, you're not going to have your lawyer living in your house, but you HAVE one, right???)

Or, man, you're supposed to be a military commander and you don't even have a single secretary?! Where is your SQUIRE?! (In the spirit of historical fiction, I am jumping wildly across time periods with every sentence here.) Man, I know you aren't looking after your own boots. Where are your GUARDS?! Who set up this tent for you?! Who is looking after your horse?! Who is making and carrying the incredibly valuable maps people are recklessly stabbing daggers into?!

SOMEONE has to be scrubbing these floors and delivering the mail and cooking the meals and doing laundry, and they're probably all DIFFERENT people! My dentist has at least three different receptionists and we can't even get ONE for our court wizard here? A sorcerer's apprentice to take notes? Someone like Sherlock Holmes could get away with just having a housekeeper and taking taxis, sure, but your character is supposed to be a KING?! Why is he answering his own front door? He's going to get assassinated. His SERVANTS should have SERVANTS.

Like, yes, I understand that a lot of servants in certain places at certain times were supposed to make their labor invisible, but there have always been servants who still had to interact directly with the masters of the house?! Yeah, there are potentially really messy ethics here, class divisions are bullshit, but I don't think that completely ignoring the reality that humans have ALWAYS been doing work for other humans is better than just including some well-paid and well-treated servants and employees? Because a complete absence of them, especially where logically for the worldbuilding there MUST be servants (and probably exploited servants, or worse, for some particular worldbuilds to work), often makes me think that your main characters just don't care enough to notice the "lower class" people or know their names.

Also, even Frodo Baggins had a gardener and Samwise Gamgee might be the best damn character in the story?! Sam saved the world?! Servants are PEOPLE. Servants are often the funniest and most interesting characters, tbh, with the most to say about a society and its workings (yes, Discworld is a very good book series, highly recommend), and also the joke of some romantic scene being carefully orchestrated by a stage crew of servants frantically diving into bushes to stay out of sight never gets old to me. Teamwork makes the dream work!

I don't want to gatekeep historical fiction, especially not historical fantasy, because the worlds don't necessarily have to conform to our own and may have magic and characters are often in very unique circumstances, but... sometimes I pick up a story and it's like... "Author, please tell me that you know there is a difference between a butler and a valet?!"

I've mentioned it before, but I think I finally want to try and explain how I write the characters in my Saiki K fics. It's mostly for me because I love talking about writing and Saiki K, but maybe some of you will enjoy this, too.

I did Toritsuka because @akechi-gf mentioned wanting tips on writing his dialogue, but 1) I felt bad info-dumping on his post and 2) didn't quite answer the dialogue answer and jumped straight into characterization (Sorry! Hope this still helps you in some convoluted way, if you're willing to read it all LMAO)

Obviously, he's very aggressively horny. He and Aiura are probably one of the firsts to laugh over something that could be taken the wrong way. But I think it's his way of trying to connect with others. He might open a conversation with some odd, vaguely creepy comment on a girl with the intention of moving the subject to something else.

He's vulgar, though I don't consider him much of a swearer. Not when compared to Kuboyasu or maybe even Kaido.

I personally write him as someone who is very opinionated. If he thinks Saiki is being too passive, or in over his head, Toritsuka is going to tell him straight up. Even if he knows the other won't take it well.

That's a big part of their relationship, I feel: even if Toritsuka is the first to cower away from Saiki puffing out his chest, he's also the first to come bounding back. He's not a 'once burned, twice shy' kind of guy. He doesn't really hold grudges, and can't quite go through with threats. I think it's why Saiki puts up with him. Like Nendo, Toritsuka is very devoted.

If you want to portray him differently, that's alright, but I always feel that something people miss with all the Saiki K. characters is that most of them are genuine assholes. They're teenagers, and I feel Toritsuka exemplifies this best. He'll say hurtful things and fucking mean them. It doesn't make him a bad person, but he definitely doesn't have the same emotional regulation as...I was going to give an example but I don't know if any of the kids are good at that. Akechi, maybe.

And speaking of emotions, he's not the best with them. He understands them, sure, but he's not even remotely delicate. That means he'll back off easily when he thinks things are beyond him. If Saiki tells him to leave it alone, that's what he's going to do. He isn't a bad guy. Toritsuka doesn't want to actively make things worse.

And on that note, he's also really fucking whiny. I try really hard not to shy away from making characters unlikable in certain aspects. If they're annoying, make them annoying. If they're a jerk, then so be it. I don't like sacrificing personality for likability. I just make sure its balanced out by other things. Toritsuka, despite his faults, has a lot of things genuinely good about him. He has pure, unadulterated faith in people, a genuine desire to become a better person (after some nudging), has shown care toward his ghosts...there's definitely stuff there.

Toritsuka's world view is fucked up, point blank. The way he talks about women isn't right. If I wrote from his perspective, it'd probably include him objectifying them. But, depending on what period of his development he's in, he might be able to step back and acknowledge that what he's thinking isn't right. He's very capable of growing and changing. Even if he's reluctant with it, he starts being less self-centered and more willing to do things just because it's the right thing to do.

He has mommy and daddy issues up the fucking wall. I think it colors his interactions with the other psychickers (who are willing to keep him in check), especially Saiki (who mother-hens basically anything that moves). He needs guidance, even if it's a bit of bullying.

Help with surgery funds

Shwmae pawb; I've never done this before and I probably won't do it again, because the embarrassment might eat me alive, but I don't have much choice right now. For those of you who don't know me, I'm a 23-year-old intersex guy who, as of last year, escaped two decades of horrific domestic abuse. I was 92 lbs (5'9") when I left and my health was in terrible condition, but I've put in non-stop effort to get on my feet, and I've managed to get my GED, a place of my own and a stable job after starting from nothing. My finances have been extremely tight due to saving up for one of my sex assignment surgeries this December, which was the only available timeslot for the next 2-3 years. I am able to cover the cost of half of it (4000-4500/9000$), but the rest is due in full by Dec. 1st, and I have no idea how I'm going to get enough money in time. I was expecting the cost to average between 3000-5000$ but was quoted at 9k by two different surgeons. I've been living at subsistence level, usually only spending 12$ on groceries every two weeks, and I work 60+ hours a week at 16/hr to try and build as much savings for this as possible. I'm committed to taking back the life that was stolen from me. I just don't know if I can do it all on my own. hi, as much as i hate to do this, my chicken, dandelion, needs to have her leg removed. she developed a gangrene infection on her foot that spread up part of her leg. it happened very fast and a lot of the flesh has died. the vet basically has told us the two options are removing the leg or putting her down.

i love dandelion, my kids love her, and i want to do whatever i can to help her. but surgery is going to be around $1.5k based on the estimate that we were given:

then there's the bills we've already gotten which have been about $300 but i'm not worried about that, really, it's just that vet doesn't have payment options, it needs to be paid the day of and now it's $1,500 so sadly that's just not doable for us.

if we're not able to get the surgery, all the money is going to go to paying for any other bills for her treatment.

Ok so you know how it's a problem when the ONLY fat characters are villains (but it's also hot because fat... and villains...)

Well I was just thinking about a post-apocalypse concept where the villains are, indeed, fat from resource hoarding and to show off their power/size compared to the overall malnourished populace

But the hero rebels are ALSO fat because they've found ways to take back said resources, or make their own, and their plumpness is a reclaimed symbol of hope in the face of the evils before them

I just think that would be neat

Hello Friends!

March and April are going to be pretty difficult months for me. I'm going through a major life change that is both sad and exciting, and will also keep me very busy.

That being said, I don't know how often I'll be able to post during this time. I'll definitely have one story post some time this week, and I'm determined to have Phoenix & Dawn's wedding before the end of March. Other than that, it may just be some cute gameplay screen shots here and there when I get a chance to check in on my pixel babes. We'll see how it goes. I will be back in full swing by May though, and I have a lot planned that I'm really looking forward to!

Shen Yuan, you... kind of answered your own question! People still eat because they like to eat! Food is good! Later on, both Shang Qinghua and Shen Yuan will bring up just how many power-up plants exist, so it seems very reasonable that food offers additional energy, replenishes energy, and has the potential to improve cultivation.

Powering a body without food or sleep seems like it could be a serious drain on your system, a burden (a status effect!) that you generally wouldn't want to take on if you didn't have to, especially for inexperienced and weaker cultivators, although some cultivators may just have a personal preference for inedia. I just personally don't like the idea of a magical system where starving yourself is actually good for you, instead of just a thing you can do that takes effort. I know, I know, it's a trope here. Shen Yuan is talking right here about how inedia is a very, very common element of the genre. It's a whole thing. It's got roots. I just personally prefer "everything has a cost and you need to trade accordingly" and "food is good for you" fantasy systems of power.

I mean, maybe there are some situations where the special properties of this world's food potentially introduce imbalances to your cultivation system, and there are situations where you do actually need an empty stomach to efficiently address a cultivation issue, like when cultivating in the Ling Xi Caves where time passes strangely and which are (I think) rich in ambient spiritual energy. That might be interesting to explore. Maybe there are some spells and techniques that require absurdly fine control. But generally speaking, I am a little squicked by the concept that not eating could be actively good (they're athletes and scholars!), so I tend not to represent this world that way, especially because SVSSS does have Shen Yuan enjoying eating as above and cooking as an act of love.
