Doctors and nurses who are not willing to listen to their patients should be replaced
BY VICTORIA SMITH
The third time I went into labour, I was determined to avoid getting told off. With both of my previous births, I had somehow managed to get things wrong. My errors the first time: going to hospital too early, then, when I returned three hours later, “leaving it so late”. The second time: ignoring assurances that I didn’t need to come in yet, then giving birth in the car park — an event I later discovered was being used in antenatal classes as an example of women “not planning ahead”.
“My previous births have been fast,” I said, when I went into labour with my third, “so I’d like to come in now.” I was speaking to the woman at the midwife-led unit that is the only option where I live. (If you need a caesarean section, you have to be transferred to next town.) “Third babies are notoriously difficult,” was her response.
What an odd thing to say to a woman already in labour. The “notoriously” suggested it wasn’t based on any actual evidence, but rather a kind of folk wisdom. It felt as though I was being warned not to tempt fate, not to assume that this baby would just pop out. I saw myself being categorised as one of those arrogant women who presumes to know her own body, only to be taught a harsh yet much-deserved lesson. “Third babies are notoriously difficult” sounded not unlike “third-time mothers shouldn’t get above themselves”.
In fact, I have never been particularly cocky about childbirth. When I was pregnant with my first child, back in the days when the Right-wing press were still obsessed with famous women being “too posh to push”, I wondered if I might be able to get an elective caesarean myself. I did not particularly care about childbirth being a wonderful experience, or about “doing it well”. I didn’t care if the Daily Mail thought I was a joke.
What I cared about was not having a child who would face the same difficulties as my brother, who was starved of oxygen at birth. This has had serious consequences for him, and for the rest of my family. Just how serious is hard to gauge. He was born traumatised; there has never been a before to compare the after with. What there has been instead is the hazy outline of an alternative life, one that runs parallel to the one he has now. It’s a life that began with the problem being identified sooner, with him being delivered quickly, perhaps by emergency caesarean. The difference between this and his actual life comes down to something small: mere moments, mere breaths.
I was born three years after my brother, in a larger hospital, where my mother was induced and monitored carefully. There is something very strange about being the sibling who had the safe birth. It feels as though I stole it. There is a constant sense of guilt, as if my life — my independence, my choices — constitutes a form of gloating. “This is what you could have had.” Everything I do feels like something owed to my brother (do it, because he can’t) but also something taken from him (you shouldn’t have done that, because he should have done it first).
Still, my family were fortunate, insofar as my brother didn’t die. Current reports on the Nottingham maternity scandal reference 1,700 cases, with an estimated 201 mothers and babies who might have survived had they received better care. What strikes me, reading them, is the enormous gulf between the cost of a disastrous birth and the trivial, opportunistic way in which childbirth is so often politicised — with mothers themselves viewed as morally, if not practically, to blame if anything goes wrong.
As a feminist who concerns herself with how the female body is demonised, my interest in debates about birthing choices is more than personal. I have read books railing against the over-medicalisation of childbirth, aligning it with a patriarchal need to appropriate female reproductive power. I have also read books protesting the fetishisation of “natural” birth, suggesting that it infantilises women, that it implies women deserve pain. To be honest, I find both arguments persuasive and dismaying. Both are right about the way in which misogyny and professional arrogance can shift the focus away from meeting the needs of women and babies. I feel a kind of rage that we are told to pick a side.
Representations of the labouring woman are so often negative: the naïve idealist, the “birthzilla“, the birth-plan obsessive, the woman who is “too posh to push”. This latter stereotype has gone hand-in-hand with a veneration of vaginal births, and stigmatisation of caesareans, that has had sometimes disastrous consequences. Midwives at the centre of the Furness General Hospital scandal were reported to have “pursued natural birth ‘at any cost’”, referring to one another as “the musketeers”; at least 11 babies and one mother died. But their approach was sanctioned by their employer: the 2006 NHS document “Pathways to Success: a self-improvement toolkit” explicitly suggested that “maternity units applying best practice to the management of pregnancy, labour and birth will achieve a [caesarean section] rate consistently below 20% and will have aspirations to reduce that rate to 15%”. Proposed benefits to this included “a sense of pride in units”.
Responses to maternity scandals now express horror that such an anti-intervention culture ever arose — responses in the same press that denigrated women such as Victoria Beckham and Kate Winslet for not giving birth vaginally. Instead, newspapers now stoke outrage over “natural” treatments during NHS births, such as burning herbs. Women have been shamed for having caesareans, but they have also been shamed for wanting births with minimum intervention — as though they are selfish and spoilt for seeking control over such an extreme situation.
In his memoir This Is Going To Hurt, former doctor Adam Kay writes disparagingly of women who arrive at the delivery suite with birth plans:
“‘Having a birth plan’ always strikes me as akin to having a ‘what I want the weather to be’ plan or a ‘winning the lottery’ plan. Two centuries of obstetricians have found no way of predicting the course of a labour, but a certain denomination of floaty-dressed mother seems to think she can manage it easily.”
Wanting to have some control over your experience of labour — which will hurt you and could kill you or your baby — is not akin to some messianic aspiration to control the weather. And in his mockery of the woman who wants whale song and aromatherapy oils, ironically, Kay deploys the same silencing techniques that might intimidate a woman out of seeking the very interventions he so prizes. What he and others do not seem to grasp is that their arrogance is a problem, regardless of which course of action they champion. It makes women feel they can’t speak, for fear of inviting hostility at their most vulnerable moments. It’s true that none of us knows our body well enough to know how we will give birth. But, looking back, I find it utterly insane, not least given my own family history, that one of my biggest worries during labour was “please don’t let anyone get cross with me”. Then again, I don’t think that fear is unrelated to the desire to remain safe.
Birth is not a joke. It is not a place for professional dick-swinging or political one-upmanship. I cannot describe — and, as I am not my mother, cannot fully understand — the shame of feeling that you “let down” your child before they drew their first breath, that they will forever suffer because of it. You watch an entire life unfolding and that feeling is there, every single day. This is the fear of the women in labour who are characterised as either idiots mesmerised by fantasy homebirths or cold-hearted posh ladies who can’t take the pain. If things go wrong, they are the ones who will bear the consequences, reflecting every day on what might have been, if they’d only done more.
When people discuss their siblings, my mind does wander to the one I don’t have, the one who was born safely. Perhaps he would have a job he loved, or one he hated, but in any case a job. Perhaps he would have a partner. Perhaps he would have children, and I would be their aunt. Perhaps we wouldn’t get on, wouldn’t even speak, but he’d have a life of his own. I know he thinks about this too. I wonder if the professionals who presided over his birth have thought about him since.
My third labour was not, by the way, “notoriously difficult”. My third son arrived into the world safe and well. No one can say why him or me, and not my brother. Mothers may long for control over birth, for which we are mocked; but we do not have it, for which we are blamed. Politics still takes precedence over our needs, and the needs of our babies.

Do you believe God answers prayer?
How do you think he chooses who to answer?
So many faithful people suffer and die while praying. Watch children suffer and die.
How does God choose?
Isn't it really just all election? Who God loves for his own whimsical reasons?
If he made us all, why does he ignore the prayers of the faithful so very very often?
What value is there in prayer? Hasn't God already made up his mind? If not, how does he? Why choose some prayers from faithful people over other possibly even more faithful people?
What role does free will play in a game where God decided before he made you if you are worthy of his grace? Based on HOW he made you?
How does he choose among the faithful who's prayers are worthy of his infinite power and what role does free will play in that? Isn't it really about election only?
Why would God pick and choose favorites from among his children, and why does it seem random and unrelated to faith entirely?
Have you read Romans 9:20-24? It's entirely about election. God decided in advance.
Hi Anon, thank you for your questions.
While I am grateful for the opportunity to answer them, I must make a disclaimer. I am not a theologian, I am not an authority on the Bible. I am only human, so I have a limited point of view and I do get stuff wrong. But I believe in the good character of God, and so hopefully my answers will be able to show his character. These are important questions. On the subject of belief, a faith untested is not a faith that can be trusted. The fact that you thought to ask is important, no matter what side of the fence you land on.
I would like to condense some of your questions to the root, and answer them out of order for better clarity, if that's alright. At the end I'll put a TL;DR, though I do hope you read through my longer answers. Lets start with the classics.
1. Free Will, or Election?
A lot of your questions hinge on the presupposition that God has determined how everything will play out, implying that our actions (and prayers) don't matter. This paints God as a liar, a narcissist, and a tyrant. Why would anyone want to worship someone like that?
Thankfully, this is not the truth of God's character.
So many people seem to think that Predestination and Free Will are antithetical to one another, without considering the possibility that they can coexist.
Its true, some are predestined to be saved. In Romans 8:29, Ephesians 1:5, there are direct quotes saying some were elected to be saved. What it does not say is that everyone else is predestined to hell. 2 Peter 3:9 states " The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. "
I can think of no better example than the story of Jonah. God told Jonah to go to Nineveh, a proud and wicked city in Assyria. Nineveh was rotten to the core, worshipping evil gods, doing all kinds of abominable things, and generally scaring the hell out of their neighbors.
For context, during the Bronze Age, Egypt, Babylon, Jerusalem, and all their surrounding cities and kingdoms were terrified of what was going on in Assyria. Nobody wanted to fight them.
Jonah certainly didn't want to go, but God was going to destroy Nineveh, and told him to warn the people.
If God was just going to destroy the city, why would he send a warning? Because he's malicious and gets off on scaring people? That doesn't sound right.
I argue that it's the good character of God to give people chances, and that's exactly what he did.
Long story short, Jonah ran away, God brought him back in the belly of a fish that spat him on the shore. Jonah gave a middling warning, he wanted nothing to do with these people. But the people of Nineveh heard the message loud and clear.
Quote Jonah 3:5  "The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth."
Fast forward to Jonah 10: " When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. "
The Ninevites were predetermined to destruction, but through their decision to repent, they were spared.
They had the free will to change! God doesn't want anyone to go to hell. Throughout the entire Bible God is repeatedly, patiently staying his hand when people ask to be spared, and extending it when people ask for help.
This goes into your next set of questions. 2. Why does God answer some prayers, but not others? And: Why does God let bad things happen, especially to his faithful?
These are questions that have been debated since before Christians were even a thing. In fact, there are 3 books that stick out to me in that regard.
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job.
Each of these books debates a different point of view. To offer a condensed synopsis:
Proverbs says that the world is ordered in a way to be fair, and that following the wisdom of God is the key to a good life.
Ecclesiastes argues that you can do everything right and still suffer, but that ultimately doing the right thing is still important even if it doesn't bring you riches.
Job takes bits of the first two, then explains it by way of the story of a man who loves God, does everything right, loses everything, and demands God explain himself.
I have some great little videos I'll link at the end of this post that goes into these books a bit more.
But back to the main point.
God hears every prayer. He knows the most intimate desires of everyone's hearts.
Going back again to 2 Peter 3:9 " The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. "
Sometimes, he doesn't answer our prayers immediately. Sometimes he does, but the answer is no. I argue that every time the answer is no, it's because he has something better in mind.
That can be hard to hear, especially from a place of suffering.
But that's why faith is important.
Faith isn't just "there is a God, I believe in him", but trusting that he has our best interests at heart.
That's a massive concept.
He asks us to assume the best in him. That's why our free will is important. He asks us to read the Bible, to look at history, and decide for ourselves if he is good, and if he has made good on his promises.
He has, every single time.
Faith is trusting that, even though you can do everything right and still suffer, God will see us through to the end. God has something better in store, whether in this life or the next.
This world is flawed, wild. Imperfect. I think about all the people that have been killed and eaten by wild animals, or were murder victims, or people who die from freak accidents. I think of the people who suffer with cancer, or children orphaned by war.
I think of all the pain and suffering I went through and yeah, sometimes it felt like God was just letting me suffer.
But that's not the case.
John 14:27 - "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
Isaiah 41:10 - "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Deuteronomy 31:6 - "Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not leave you or forsake you."
God was with me the whole time.
I don't think enough people realize that the God of the Bible is the only god in any religion, mythology, or legend that can rightfully claim to fully understand what its like to be human and god in one.
Imagine an all powerful being willingly being born human.
Imagine him subjecting himself to the same pains we go through.
As Jesus he experienced hunger, fear, grief, pain. He felt the anger of injustice, and the hopelessness of loss. He even experienced feeling abandoned by God.
His own people turned him in to be killed. Think of the betrayal. He went through the whole gamut of the human experience, from the good to the ugly.
He saw the hideous greed and injustice of the Pharisees and the Romans face to face.
And God did that for you. For me. For the worst person you know.
We don't suffer alone. This God is the only god who can suffer with us, who can truly sympathize with what it feels like to be human.
He understands our perspective.
Jesus is more than the fulfillment of prophesy, the sacrifice to end all sacrifice. Jesus is God demonstrating the lengths he would go to to be with us again.
He knows the pain, he experienced it firsthand.
He knows the feeling of starving. He knows what it feels like to be murdered.
And he knows that there is something better coming for anyone who asks.
So, to sum up your questions.
God is good. He does not predestine anyone to hell, rather elects some as people to lead others away from hell.
2. The world is flawed, God is not. God knows firsthand every pain anyone has ever suffered. God does not want people to suffer, but rather take comfort knowing that better things are around the corner, even after death.
3. God answers every prayer. Sometimes the answer is no and we have to trust him.
As for the how questions. I cannot tell you how God thinks or why he decides the things he does. But I have seen his character, and I trust that he is good, wise, and above all kind. I trust him to make the right decisions.
Thank you again Anon for the opportunity to answer these questions. I apologize for the lateness, I am rarely ever on desktop and got no notifications.
God bless you.

I have a follow up question which is What's Going On With Kathleen?
lol oh man. the real question is what ISN'T going on with kathleen
she was......... A Real Character that's for sure. interpreted in all sorts of bonkers ways by posterity because she refuses to fit into any sort of neat historical categorization as far as "wives of famous heroes" go. she was a strident anti-suffragist, loud in her universal hatred of other women, obsessive about maintaining her virginity amongst swarms of admirers in fin-de-siecle paris, determined to find a worthy father for her destined son, despite her occasional wishes she could have a son without marrying at all...
back to spufford, who wrote really wonderfully about kathleen:
She does not mind the election to muse and taskmistress; but she did not choose it, and again Scott has perhaps slightly misread her. The Woman One Must Strive For is a cartoon out of the male mind, and only approximates Kathleen. It is true that she plays up to it. It is true that she has something of the presenter of white feathers about her, blithely demanding bravery in circumstances her gender prevents her from experiencing. But her vicarious involvement in his polar life is more generous than that, and her emotions more detached from the public failure or success of the expedition than Scott imagines. Their marriage would not be ruined (as he sometimes fears) if he returned having failed to reach the pole, or (now his fears have coalesced into a Norwegian) having failed to beat Amundsen. The self-invented code she lives by has an eccentric stoicism as a main tenet. Nothing will be allowed to hurt enough to take the joy out of her life. When Scott moped once about the future, she had replied, in italics, 'I shall be happy whatever things happen and that is true!' She would contrive to be happy if he came home defeated; she would manage somehow to make it not matter; though whether he would be able to endure that particular demonstration of her self-sufficiency is another question.
in terms of the polycule chart, her connection to nansen comes from a set of historical letters between him and her that demonstrate certainly that he was in love with her, and that she felt something for him in return—but whether they actually consummated an affair is disputed. roland huntford, rolanding away, claims that clearly they obviously did, but wayland young (kathleen's son from her second marriage) was able to dispute that fairly easily based on evidence from the letters which huntford actively ignored.
but it's clear she had certain qualities which caused everything from obsession to revulsion to confusion in the people that she encountered. when she had to suffer the company of Hilda Evans and Oriana Wilson during the terra nova's time in new zealand it ended in violent fighting, with oates comparing the scene to a "Chicago slaughterhouse" with blood and hair flying everywhere. her overbearing presence during the loading of cargo annoyed the hell out of bowers. later, when cherry published Worst Journey, she took issue with Scott being described at times unflatteringly—despite Cherry's clear affection for him elsewhere in the book. this caused a fatal rupture in their friendship, which up until then had seen kathleen bringing her young son and many admirers (including nansen lol) to cherry's country estate.
anyway, that's about all i got, but there is a biography by her granddaughter louisa young which i have not read but is based partially on her diaries/autobiography, so if you want to know more about her you could start there!

The Rothschild Economist which owns Israel is asking Israel what is the ‘end game’?   Netanyahu has declared this war will take months… as in until the US 2024 election. Four end-game scenarios have been proposed: 1. Take Gaza, rubble and all, and run it via Netanyahu 2. Allow the ‘hated’ Abbas to control it, 3.   Bring in foreigners, 4. Give it back to Hamas.   Obviously only one scenario is going to be allowed.
Netanyahu wants a clean slate of Israel – only for his chosen secular Israeli’s as was originally proposed by Edmond Rothschild in t he late 1800’s.   However, Gaza is only one part of the Palestinian land – the West Bank in reality is next.
And just like that, Netanyahu has declared Hamas is in The West Bank and has begun a terror raid of the territory.   The media justification ‘reprisal’.   Israel is allowed to indiscriminately kill whomever they determine is necessary for their mission – widening the ever increasing master plan for a world war to erupt in the Middle East.
A suicide mission.
US and UK have announced evacuation orders of their citizens from Lebanon – inviting an even greater middle east incursion.   And the rally cry for peace is ignored. Reminiscent of the Vietnam War.   A government war.   The Draft.
The US military has been lamenting the abysmal recruits despite lowering every conceivable standard and offering bonuses for those who enlist.   BONUSES.   And still no one wants to be a part of this military. A corrupt, degenerate military that treats its soldiers like trash.
With two forever wars to choose from the military is very likely to necessitate The Dreaded Draft once again.   Protect your sons and daughters!
Today the call it Selective Service and every person between the ages of 18 and 25 must register – including illegal immigrants…   ALL 7 million draft aged immigrants must register or face a felony charge.   Untrained.   Unvetted.   Possibly carrying a number of diseases.   The Selective Service is set up like the draft for Vietnam – based on a lottery.   Draw the wrong number and off you go to bootcamp!   Sorry – your bad luck!
I wonder how many of those upstanding citizens decrying death to all Muslims would feel if their precious sons and daughters drew the ‘wrong number’?   Would ‘Give Peace A Chance’ once again vibrate the hallowed halls of government?   Would the elite grease the hands that select the numbers? Rory Gates is – 24.

By Lucian Kim, a global fellow with the Wilson Center in Washington and NPR’s former Moscow bureau chief.
When I saw the first images of armed men in ragtag uniforms taking over the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday morning, I was immediately reminded of the “little green men” who began showing up in cities in Crimea and eastern Ukraine in 2014. Like the Russian troops and soldiers-of-fortune who began the Kremlin’s covert invasion of Ukraine, the fighters in Rostov displayed no insignia as they seized key buildings, including the headquarters of Russia’s Southern Military District. Just as in Ukraine nine years ago, there was no resistance from local law enforcement officers, who chose life over a fight with determined gunmen.
This weekend’s lightning takeover of Rostov by the Wagner mercenary group was the first step in an armed mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the ex-con who rose to become Russia’s most infamous battlefield commander. From there, the Wagner forces began a march on Moscow until Prigozhin abruptly ordered his men to turn around and return to their bases. In the space of 24 hours, the full madness of Vladimir Putin’s dictatorship was on display. The blowback of his attack on Ukraine was symbolized by a Wagner tank, marked with the letter “Z,” which stands for the Kremlin’s war effort, pointing not at Ukrainians but other Russians.
Prigozhin said his beef was with the military leadership, which he accused of trying to destroy the Wagner Group. He has a history of publicly insulting Russia’s defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, and the chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, and getting away with it. But Prigozhin’s open show of arms on Russian soil sent a challenge to the Kremlin that Putin could no longer ignore. In a televised address, the Russian president called Wagner’s mutiny a “stab in the back” and warned of civil war. Putin even invoked the violent collapse of the Russian Empire in World War I, though he did not mention Tsar Nicholas II, the disgraced ruler murdered by Russian revolutionaries.
There is another similarity to World War I that Putin did not mention: corruption and incompetence in the Russian military, as well as the inhumane treatment of its own soldiers. Anger with Russia’s top brass has not been limited to Wagner, and Prigozhin’s rage may well extend to the ranks of the Russian military. At the very least, that Prigozhin’s army was able to travel hundreds of miles unhindered shows that the Kremlin lacks the wherewithal to put down a domestic rebellion, especially when its best troops are fighting in Ukraine.
Despite the drama of the situation, a mutiny by Russia’s scariest people should not come as a surprise. The Kremlin allowed Prigozhin to recruit in prisons, which filled Wagner’s fighting force with desperate convicts. Prigozhin has long been the Kremlin’s man for dirty deeds, from interfering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election with his so-called troll farm to fighting undercover in Ukraine, Syria, and the Central African Republic. The Kremlin could deny any connection to Prigozhin, and Prigozhin, of course, denied hiring trolls and warriors. When an unknown number of Wagner contractors in Syria were killed by U.S. forces in 2018, the Kremlin response was muted, since officially they were not members of Russia’s armed forces.
It’s likely that Putin originally imagined Wagner as a Russian version of Blackwater, the U.S. private military contractor that came to prominence in the Iraq War. Wagner mercenaries in Syria and Africa played the part, wearing baseball caps and wraparound sunglasses while toting serious guns. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, Prigozhin stepped out of the shadows to claim ownership of Wagner—and credit for its costly victories. A sledgehammer became the unofficial symbol of the Wagner Group after Prigozhin said one of his fighters had been executed with the tool as punishment for switching to the Ukrainian side.
For Putin, the Wagner mutiny is a self-inflicted wound, the result of his suicidal war against Ukraine. Putin could have chosen to stay on the track of a middle-income economy, with oil and gas exports to Europe guaranteeing enough money to sate his cronies, repress his enemies, and keep the rest of the country quiet, if not happy. Yet the longer he stayed in power, the less interested Putin became in being remembered simply as the leader who stabilized Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. That was not enough. Putin wanted the legacy of restoring an empire, beginning with Ukraine.
At first, the mission of the “little green men” he sent into eastern Ukraine was to turn the country into a failed state by embroiling it in a perpetual, low-level war. But Ukrainians defied Russia, and even after the 2022 invasion, they rallied to their country’s defense and did not let it collapse. Though battered and bloodied, Ukraine is unified and clear about its purpose. Now Russia looks like the failed state. Nobody in Russia understands what the war in Ukraine is about. And after Prigozhin’s rebellion, nobody knows if that war might not still come to Russia. Who will defend Putin? And who will go for Prigozhin?
Under an agreement brokered by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, charges against Prigozhin will be dropped, and he will be allowed safe passage to Belarus. But the deal hardly eliminates the threat that Prigozhin—or someone like him—poses to the Kremlin in the future. It is unclear if we are witnessing the beginning, middle, or end of Putin’s end. What is certain is that it is the final chapter of his rule.

Today (October 4) is Canada's National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
Indigenous women and girls are at a disproportionate risk for violence. Indigenous women are women are over-represented among Canada’s murdered and missing women. (They are also disproportionately incarcerated and involved in the sex trade.) This is a significant, persistent, and deliberate pattern of systemic racial and sex-based human rights violations.
Because Canada is Canada, the government decided to do an inquiry report to look into this crisis that we already knew was a crisis. This report called Canada's MMIWG crisis "genocide." This is neither exaggeration nor understatement.
Despite this report, and the concrete actions it listed that the government could take to address the MMIWG crisis, the Canadian government has taken only symbolic action to protect Indigenous women and girls nation-wide.
Because today is the day of action, here are some actions you can take.
First, educate yourself. Read the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Among the calls for justice in the report are eight actions all Canadians should take: "1. Denounce and speak out against violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people. 2. Decolonize by learning the true history of Canada and Indigenous history in your local area. Learn about and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ history, cultures, pride, and diver- sity, acknowledging the land you live on and its importance to local Indigenous communities, both historically and today. 3. Develop knowledge and read the Final Report. Listen to the truths shared, and acknowl- edge the burden of these human and Indigenous rights violations, and how they impact Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people today. 4. Using what you have learned and some of the resources suggested, become a strong ally. Being a strong ally involves more than just tolerance; it means actively working to break down barriers and to support others in every relationship and encounter in which you participate. 5. Confront and speak out against racism, sexism, ignorance, homophobia, and transpho- bia, and teach or encourage others to do the same, wherever it occurs: in your home, in your workplace, or in social settings. 6. Protect, support, and promote the safety of women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people by acknowledging and respecting the value of every person and every community, as well as the right of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people to generate their own, self-determined solutions. 7. Create time and space for relationships based on respect as human beings, supporting and embracing differences with kindness, love, and respect. Learn about Indigenous principles of relationship specific to those Nations or communities in your local area and work, and put them into practice in all of your relationships with Indigenous Peoples. 8. Help hold all governments accountable to act on the Calls for Justice, and to implement them according to the important principles we set out."
If you are Canadian, please write to your elected officials and demand that they act on the report's Calls for Justice. (Amnesty International provides some templates for letter writing: 1, 2, 3, 4)
If you are not Canadian, I would encourage you to write to your government and call on them to take formal action against Canada to make our government take action to protect Indigenous women and girls.
Please stop letting us get away with being 'the good guys' just because we're next to the States. The countless deaths and disappearances of Indigenous women and girls have not been enough to force Canadians to act. We need international backlash.
I encourage you to educate your friends and family on this issue. Too many Indigenous women and girls go without justice everyday.
(And because I know Tumblr is full of Americans and this isn't just a Canada problem, I'm linking this report on MMIWG in the US.)

To Know Who Democrats Are, Look At What They Accuse Republicans Of Being

In an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart for the racist Joy Reid show (I’d make an analogy about a Republican president sitting down with a racist Fox host, but there isn’t anything close to an equivalent) the so-called journalist asked the following question, “A far –right conservative person said earlier this month about the Senate race in Georgia, and I quote ‘I don’t care if Herschel Walker paid to abort endangered baby eagles, I want control of the Senate.’ You were in the Senate a long time, 1973 to 2008, you know that institution inside and out, better than anybody probably has ever served in it. In that time, you served with many Republicans, super-conservative Republicans. My question is to you, though, Mr. President, is can our democracy survive when the Republican Party is…it only cares about power?”
Honestly, Joe Biden can skip his next colonoscopy, Capehart was just up there, kissing everything, and saw nothing. Our idiot President, after the tongue bath from a “serious journalist,” answered a question with implicit “Democrats don’t care about power” undertones (something laughable on its face as they still order anyone they can to get a “vaccine” shot that doesn’t work simply because they can’t let go of the power to do so), replied, “I think that if we allow the Republican party to continue to metastasize into a minority of what the party as a whole is…I look, I think one of the reasons there’s not more mainstream conservative Republicans running out there is because they are so concerned about not only their physical well-being, but also notion that how can they win when a minority of Republicans are showing up to vote and they’re really hard edged?”
What planet is he from? Putting aside the absurdity that potential Republican candidates were concerned for their safety from anything other than the Brownshirt BLM/ANTIFA progressive mob committing political violence for years on behalf of, and with the blessing of, Biden’s party, let’s just take a second and look at what the two parties have become over the last few years on just a couple of issues. Abortion: There was once Republicans on both sides of the issue, just as there once were pro-life Democrats.
There are still Republicans on both sides of the issue and Republicans who are pro-life who support all manner of restrictions – from a total ban to a 15-week ban. There isn’t a single Democrat willing to say there should be any restrictions on abortion, up to the moment of birth, and until the kid goes to college if that becomes the fashion with the radical left.Capitalism: Both parties were capitalists, by and large. No Democrat pays more than lip service to the concept now.Women: Both parties used to know what one was – Bill Clinton never hooked up with a male intern and Ted Kennedy never screwed around with or killed a guy, they knew exactly what a woman was.
Now, as if someone waived a magic wand, every Democrat has forgotten what a woman is, even the women who’ve spent their political careers claiming to be champions of women. These are a few examples, but there really isn’t any issue on which the left hasn’t been completely homogenized, no one dare disagree with the fringe out of fear of their wrath. Tell me again how Republicans have radicalized? When you’re sitting next to someone in the middle of a bench then you slide down to the end, if you ignored where you were before you could make the case that the other person has moved so far to the extreme to a person ignorant of how things were. That’s what Democrats are now – a group of people lying to the base they’ve fought hard to keep ignorant.
The extent to which it works in the future is dependent upon how much it has worked so far. The results of this election will determine more than who controls the House or Senate, it will determine whether or not we start to pull up from the Democrat-imposed nosedive on everything from free speech and economics to the Alphabet Mafia and cultural rot. Don’t take the common sense of your friends, family and neighbors for granted, make sure those who have common sense actually vote. Drag them with you if that’s what it takes. The stakes have never been higher.

What do most of America's mass shootings have in common? White, male culprits
As we watch the heartbreaking aftermath of America’s latest mass shooting, what we must acknowledge is what they have in common.
First, in most of the shootings, the culprits, including the alleged shooter in Thursday’s massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., used or owned AR15 assault weapons that shouldn’t be in the hands of anyone except military troops abroad.
Second, most of the culprits of the worst mass shootings since the massacre at Columbine High School in 1999 have been white males.
Tumblr media
And for all of you who just set your hair on fire or ran to pick up your phone to call and scream at me that I’m a racist: I do not contend that these boys and men shot up schools or a movie theater or a church because they are white.
I contend that America continues to allow it because they are white …
… because you can be damn sure that if these shootings had been done by black males, there would be calls to round all up the young black men across the country until we could determine what was wrong with them — or until we, the collective we, which means the white we, felt safe. There would be some change in gun laws. There would be action.
And it would be a major, continuing news story rather than one forgotten by Sunday.
It is almost as if we want to forgive these men who for days after their crimes have been referred to as “broken” or “troubled.”
So when Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 children, six teachers, his mother and himself at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in 2012, using an AR15, we moved on. We thought that would be the incident that would change things. He murdered babies just learning to read books and solve math problems, children still leaving teeth for the Tooth Fairy and giving their wishes to Santa Claus. But we moved on.
After Dylann Roof took a handgun and shot nine African-American parishioners to death while they prayed at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston (and was treated to a hamburger by authorities on the way to jail), we moved on.
Tumblr media
After Omar Mateen shot 99 people — 49 fatally — at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando in 2016, using an AR15, we moved on.
Even after retired accountant Stephen Paddock shot 909 outdoor concertgoers in Las Vegas — 58 of them fatally and using an AR15 — we moved on.
Even after Devin Kelley shot 26 people to death at a Sutherland Springs, Texas, church in 2017, using an AR15, we moved on.
Now Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a student who had been expelled and who gave enough warning signs that someone should have seen it coming, went back to his old school, and opened fire with a semiautomatic, yep, you guessed it, AR15 rifle.
By Thursday evening’s news, the death toll had reached 17.
We cannot move on.
That is what must happen next:
First, we must take these shootings seriously and not continue to ignore them because they’re being done by depraved, young white men. We must be up in arms. If they weren’t white, we’d be up in arms. That is not racist. That is based on historical fact. Changing how people get guns, keeping guns from the mentally ill and weapons of war off American streets are not impossible dreams.
Second, we must stop treating black males like murderers when they’re selling cigarettes on a street corner or mass murderers if they are involved in a fight or like drug dealers if they’re caught smoking marijuana and sending them away for long prison sentences — while we do nothing to stop this scourge of mass shootings that has claimed thousands of victims. Many of the predominantly black high schools across Detroit — and in other urban areas — have metal detectors and an attitude of fear. There have been no mass school shootings at these high schools.
Third, we must stop voting for any candidate for any office that accepts money from the National Rifle Association.and stop electing leaders who watch these shootings happen over and over and do nothing about it but spout condolences.
Donald Trump was not wrong in his tweet after the shooting which said:
So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!
There were signs that the shooter was dangerous, signs that were ignored again and again.
Trump also tweeted:
My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting. No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.
But what Trump didn’t do, as is typical, was to go far enough.
America can always use prayer. But America also needs leaders who will put children before the gun lobby.
Trump told children in a televised address that leaders "would do anything to protect you."
Now, America's children will see whether his words have meaning. Because school shootings can no longer be treated like white-collar crimes.

It takes a community
Tumblr media
Remember community? Do you remember when everyone joined civic organizations like the Lions and the Kiwanis to do good works for the community?  Do you remember charity towards others? This was where George H.W. Bush’s “thousand points of light” to help others were supposed to come from in lieu of aid from the government that he was cutting. Yet today, people who call themselves Christians ignore the second great commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31 for you Christians). In the years since Bush was president, we have seen a marked decline in caring for people other than ourselves. Today, it’s all about rights. Not your rights, my rights. My right to practice my religion, even if it harms others. My right to self-defense, even where there is no credible threat. My right to determine what my children are taught in public school, no matter whether exercising that right harms other parents’ children. In just about every way possible, we have gone rights crazy in this country. Everyone has their favorite right that they consider absolute. For liberals, it may be the right to have complete control over your body. For conservatives, it may be the right to have as many guns as you like. The problem is that absolute rights are only practical if you’re living alone in the wilderness. Once you agree to live with other people, you surrender absolute rights. In a community, the only practical rights are those that benefit the common good of the community or at least do not harm the community. For any Christians still reading this, that’s the “love your neighbor as yourself” part. Recently, there has been a rash of book banning done at the behest of a tiny minority of parents under the rubric of “parental rights.” The problem with this is that once you enroll your children in a public school, you surrender some parental rights. The social contract of a public school is that what is taught is the wisdom of the majority, regardless of the feelings of the minority about that instruction. That’s why it’s free. If you have views of academic propriety that do not jive with the majority of the community, you have the absolute right to remove your children to a private school, or to home school them yourself. You do not have the right to demand that your particular view of morality be taught in a public school. That is not the free exercise of religion; that’s the first step toward theocracy. Another way we are called upon to love their neighbor is in our criminal justice system. If you live in the wilderness, you are the law and the justice system. Once you come and live with others, there are laws based on community values to be obeyed. And there is no value to law without a justice system to enforce it. That’s why the system must be respected. That’s the way we protect one another. But recently, we have seen a type of Christofascism that refuses to respect the law and the justice system. Now, when someone we like is charged with a crime, we don’t argue that the person is not guilty of the charges, we protest the system that would dare to charge him in the first place. The problem is that if some people are above the law, there is no respect for law. Through a weaponization of the right of free speech, people are charging weaponization of the justice system. I’m sure that friends of Al Capone thought that charging him with fairly inconsequential income tax evasion was a weaponization of the justice system. But unless we charge everyone who breaks the law (even if they’re clergy, politicians, mobsters, or billionaires) then we have no law and order. We have anarchy where everyone is a law unto themselves. As someone who lived through the 1968 presidential campaign, I find it odd that people who call themselves conservatives have turned their back on law and order. Richard Nixon was elected on that platform. But now many people who would have voted for Nixon don’t seem to care that a law has been violated if it’s their guy who is being charged. The only way that the justice system protects everyone is for everyone who violates the law to be charged. And if that defendant’s name happens to be Clinton or Biden or Trump, so be it. It’s the system that matters, not individuals. America is certainly as divided as it’s ever been in my lifetime, but there’s one thing that everyone should agree upon. We need to protect the system; we need to protect our form of government. Blaming the justice system for doing its job is the path to anarchy. We need to do what’s best for the community, not any one person or party.

10th NASS: Ekpa warns southeast senators against playing ethnic card
Tumblr media
As the intrigues of the 10th National Assembly Leadership continue to mount, popular Biafra agitator and separatist Simon Ekpa has warned returning and senators-elect against fanning the embers of ethnicity. Ekpa, the Finland-based lawyer and self-styled Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, in a statement on Tuesday, disclosed this. He said, “We want to warn the Southeast Senators led by their spokesperson, Hon. Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, to desist from sowing the seeds and cards of ethnicity in the Eastern Region because we are one people – We are Biafrans. There will be no restiveness if your caucus does not win the Senate presidency because we will never fight for your selfish ambitions. “We want to alert our people of the so-called Southeast Senators Caucus ploy to create a chasmic ethnic disunity in Biafraland in the guise of fighting for the Senate presidency. These dishonourable Senators refuse to support the Biafran craving to exit Nigeria. Also, they said that they wanted the president of One-Nigeria to be of Igbo extraction. However, when the time came for them to put actions to their words, their selfishness and greed robbed them of securing the ticket of any of the two major political parties. “When one of them, Peter Obi, was running around for their support and mobilisation, these same politicians who claim they are one Nigeria refused to support their own. “It is rather unfortunate that while other Nigerians who believe in One-Nigeria like them are pushing for the court to grant justice to Peter Obi, these Senators have already endorsed the rigged the election (“selection”), endorsed the Muslim-Muslim Presidency and endorsed the pronouncement of Bola Tinubu as president-elect, leaving their own out there to fight for himself. “Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu said, “Obi should withdraw his case, challenging Tinubu’s victory from the court so that he (Orji) will become an Igbo Senate president. “I am reliably informed that this same Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, is the brain behind this shameless outing by the Senators of the Southeast Caucus of self-centred and greedy politicians. “If Senator Godswill Akpabio is the favourite of the 10th Assembly of the NASS to become the Senate president, so be it. We are not interested in Nigeria’s politics of who becomes what. However, we shall not let you divide us further for your selfish ambitions inside One-Nigeria. We are Biafrans, committed and determined to exit Nigeria this year. “We declare, given the above, that come May 29th 2023, all these Vagabonds in Power (“VIP”) Senators of Igbo extraction should stop parading themselves as representatives of the people from Biafraland as a vote of no confidence will be passed on to them by Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, and Biafrans will deal with them decisively. They do not represent our people’s interests but are in office for themselves, by themselves, through the ignorant trust of the people”, he stated. In another development, Ekpa has been honoured with the title “Agu N’eche Mba-1” by Biafra monarchs under the Aegis Custodians of Culture and Tradition. “We, the Custodians Of Culture And Tradition (CCT), Biafra Monarchs, crowned you today as “Agu N’eche Mba-1″ of Biafra Land. It is also our congratulatory message on your election as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In Exile (BRGIE). The above is a message I received from the CCT Biafra Monarchs with a video of the coronation of Ekpa Simon Njoku as (Agu N’eche Mba -1) of Biafra Land. It is, therefore, official my appreciation to CCT and Biafra Monarchs”, he posted on his Twitter handle on Monday. Read the full article

Abandon Fear Ye Who Enter Here
Tumblr media
A friend of mine took a series of tests to determine her mental decline as she aged. Happily, for her, the tests were comforting.  Even so, I admired her courage.  What she’d done was like poking a sleeping bear with a sharp stick.  If the news hadn’t been good, how would she have coped? Alzheimer’s, for example, has no cure. Early intervention is key for dealing with Alzheimer’s, experts say.  But to what end? A few months of clarity before drifting into that good night and all the while knowing the Good Ship Memory has left the dock? When there is little to be gained, I prefer not to know. Many will think differently.   Fear affects us in different ways. It can leave us catatonic and in denial. Or, like people prancing across hot coals, it can initiate a frenzy to save ourselves.  In every case, fear tests our sanity. People like my friend who face reality with courage leave me in awe. Pete Buttigieg, the U. S. Secretary of Transportation, is also unflappable. Asked about the current state of our democracy, his answer is matter-of-fact.  Our system of government is designed to pick winners and losers.  For the process to work, people have to accept outcomes. Buttigieg’s response is so simple, it smacks of naïvite.  That’s the beauty of truth.  Once grasped, It is simple and profound, like E=MC(2).  Finding the truth is where the complexity lies. After two years and several ballot box investigations, ending with no evidence of wrongdoing, some Americans continue to believe Donald Trump won the 2020 election. They believe the lie because that is the outcome they wanted– as if wishing could make it so.  Like flat-earthers living in a spherical world, they close their eyes to truths that distress them.     If the outcome of an election is difficult to grasp, for many the knowledge that climate change is about to exterminate our species is unfathomable. Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine arises from that consummate ignorance. Ukraine belongs to Russia, he insists. But what does that mean to a dead planet? Absurdity’s crown goes to Iran’s Mullahs, of course. They worry about women’s headgear while the ground crumbles beneath their feet.   If the flat-earthers and their ilk would open their eyes, they’d see the time for rancor is passed.  We must work together if we are to save our species. Unfortunately, too many scrunch their eyes against the light.  They insist Time has a reverse gear that if thrown would return us to better days. Better days aren’t the same for everyone, as we know.  White supremacists long for the era when they were allowed to see themselves as superior beings, a superiority that justified imperialism and slavery. People like Marjorie Taylor Green cling to the notion of race.  It flies in the face of science but it serves her purpose. “…illegal aliens are on the verge of replacing you [whites], replacing your jobs and replacing your kids in school and coming from all over the world, they’re also replacing your culture.  And that’s not great for America. By 2050, half of the U. S. population will have darker skin pigmentation than today’s mix. Pigment means nothing. We don’t discriminate against people based on hair color. Why concern ourselves with skin? Race warriors should attend to the date 2050 for a different reason. That’s the year scientists predict the earth becomes uninhabitable for humans.   Fear can galvanize people into action, as I’ve said. Too often the outcome ends in mindless hate. Ukrainians are as pigment deprived as any Russian.  Even so, one propagandist for Putin’s invasion insists the children of his enemy should be drowned and burned.  Why are people “freaking out?” a researcher asks in response to the times. No one has an answer. Like the stars, black holes, and the universe, being made of stardust, perhaps humans sense the cosmos is shedding tears for our demise.  Is there a cosmic consciousness? Some speculate it exists. To align ourselves, they urge us to move beyond science.  As useful as reason is to us, they insist it is  too narrow a framework to integrate other aspects of the mind, creativity, intuition, or empathy, for example. To discover a different harmony, our inner world will have to experience a shift of epic proportions. The evolution could take a century. Unfortunately, we are running out of time and so we blind ourselves to the future, choosing to engage in a frenzied suspicion of  “the other.”  Reason has no power against the fires of insanity. Insanity must burn itself out, taking us with it.    I cringe to hear talk about saving the planet.  What colossal hubris.  Earth will spin on its axis regardless of rises in temperature and water levels. A few birds might continue to sing. Climate change is about us.  Will we decide to work together or close our eyes to what lies ahead?  Which is to be,  earthlings?  Courage or cowardice?

my video call with the WHO this morning - Dr Tess Lawrie
Tumblr media
By Dr Tess Lawrie, MBBCh, PhD I just got off a call with the WHO that’s left me shaken, reaching for my affirmations and more determined than ever. As you may know, the WHO is proposing a global pandemic agreement that would give it undemocratic rights over every participating nation and its citizens. Put simply, in the event of a ‘pandemic’, the WHO’s constitution would replace every country’s constitution. Whether your country’s elected government would agree or not, the WHO could impose lockdowns, testing regimes, enforce medical interventions, dictate all public health practice, and much more. Over the course of this pandemic, the WHO has withheld safe and established older medicines, ignored the experiences of frontline doctors, disregarded evidence from low, middle and high-income countries, and taken no heed of the values and preferences of people affected by their recommendations. It has apparently ignored the huge numbers of adverse reactions on its own database and has failed to issue warnings about the gene-based vaccines. It has also advertised that the mRNA vaccines are as safe as normal vaccines – and this is simply not the case. Many of us are extremely concerned that the WHO now intends to take full control over every member nation via this pandemic treaty. The World Council for Health wrote a response to this a while back and has been watching developments closely. Well, this week the WHO pulled a fast one on the world. On Sunday, it launched a ‘public participation process’ and invited video and written submissions. They gave two days to make video submissions, and written submissions must be received by 5pm CEST today. That’s just five days for the world’s citizens to have their voices heard. The World Council for Health acted fast and applied to do a two-minute video submission. We put together a strong statement and this morning, I joined the hearing to say our piece. There were 48 people on the call at the time I tuned in. Sixteen of them were WHO staff. Others were from UNAIDS, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), the UN Environment Programme, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Here’s some of what I heard (and my comments on each): ·      Calls for ‘human security centric’ not just ‘health security centric’. Apparently, they don’t just want to control your body but every aspect of your life. ·      Fast approval of emergency diagnostics – and unified regulatory registration for diagnostics. In other words, more control. ·      Equitable access to vaccines and ‘a mechanism to hold violators accountable’. So if a nation concludes a vaccine is not safe – as has happened in this last pandemic – the WHO would have the power to override that and jab their population anyway. ·      Vaccines should be developed within 100 days. This is absurd. Safe drugs take ten years to be adequately tested and declared safe. There are more than 3.5 million people on the WHO database who have been harmed by Covid vaccines and this may be the tip of the iceberg. Then it was my turn. I told them that the World Council for Health does not believe a pandemic treaty is necessary and would not benefit the people of our world. I shared sixteen recommendations which included the need for transparency, a return to open debate and dialogue, respect of our inalienable human rights and civil liberties and the sovereignty of all people and nations. I called for the right to choose and refuse treatments, or medical interventions, including access to repurposed medications. I also called for a rejection of mass experimentation and social engineering, and discrimination based on medical status or choice. And, I enjoined the WHO to promote restoration for harms from medical interventions. I said our piece, knowing that I speak for all of us – all of you. Will it make a difference? Honestly, I don’t know. Over the last two days the WHO will have had fewer than 100 video presentations, perhaps as few as 70. Most are asking for more measures, not fewer. This is what we are up against. This is what we must fight. If you’re feeling despondent or worried after reading this, I understand. I felt that way too. But we have to remember our power, and we have to use that power as much as we can. Let me give you an example. Three days ago, the World Council for Health did what the WHO should have done and spread the word as much as it could. We put together a guide to making a written submission and invited everyone to use it to have their say. Well, last night so many people were on our #stopthetreaty campaign webpage, the website crashed. We’ve increased our server capacity now – so if you’re reading this in time and haven’t yet done so, take a look at the guide and make a submission before the 5pm CEST deadline. You have a right to be heard. Speak up. Represent yourself, your family, and your loved ones. If you miss the deadline, it doesn’t matter – there are so many other ways you can push back. Spread the word – tell everyone you know, alert your government representatives. And please, consider supporting the World Council for Health with a regular donation. Manned primarily by volunteers, it exists for you, to represent your interests in the face of compromised public organisations. Help us to help all of us – and spread the word that we are here, doing what we can to create a better way. Read the full article

MORE LIKELY THAN NOT
WF THOUGHTS (3/30/22).
Two days ago, I defended nine controversial words recently uttered by Joe Biden about Putin's war against Ukraine.
Today, I am applauding the following 27 words that appeared in a very important judicial decision on March 28th: "Based on the evidence, the Court finds it more likely than not that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021."
While I'm at it, I'll also applaud these 33 words from the same judicial opinion: "Based upon the evidence, the Court finds that it is more likely than not that President Trump and Dr. Eastman dishonestly conspired to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress on January 6, 2021."
The Judge was saying that he believed that Donald Trump had committed two federal crimes. It is a federal crime to obstruct an official proceeding in Congress. It is a separate federal crime to conspire with another person to obstruct a lawful function of the federal government.
The 44 page opinion was written by a Federal Judge named David Carter. It carefully analyzes certain aspects of Trump's efforts to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election.
In addition to the 60 words that I've quoted above, the opinion contains a bunch of other gems. I'll give you a few examples.
John Eastman, who holds a doctorate degree, is a lawyer who worked with Donald Trump in an effort to keep Congress from counting the Electoral Votes on January 6, 2021. Here's what Judge Carter wrote about their plan: "Dr. Eastman and President Trump launched a campaign to overturn a democratic election, an action unprecedented in American history. ...Their campaign was not confined to the ivory tower--it was a coup in search of a legal theory."
The Court also added: "The illegality of the plan was obvious. Our nation was founded on the peaceful transition of power, epitomized by George Washington laying down his sword to make way for democratic elections. Ignoring this history, President Trump vigorously campaigned for the Vice President to single-handedly determine the results of the 2020 election. As the Vice President stated, 'no Vice President in history has ever asserted such authority.' Every American--and certainly the President of the United States--knows that in a democracy, leaders are elected and not installed."
Unfortunately, these rulings were not made in a criminal proceeding against Trump. The Court was addressing Eastman's efforts to withhold his documents from the Select Committee To Investigate The January 6 Attack On The Capitol. Eastman was asserting that his documents were protected by attorney-client privilege. Thankfully, under a rule called the "crime-fraud exception," the attorney-client privilege cannot be used to protect criminal actions. Because the Court found that Trump was engaging in criminal actions, the Court ruled that the lawyer was required to disclose his documents to Congress. Aren't you glad that lawyers cannot assist in the commission of crimes?
Because of Judge Carter's rulings, the Justice Department will have to seriously consider bringing criminal charges against Donald Trump. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
It's been a big week for pithy quotes. You're now up to speed.

Alright kiddos, it is time for! The last chapter of the opening arcs / battle trial! Wherein we continue Katsuki's mental breakdown! <3
I’m considering doing some kind of end-of-arc(s) summary / personal thoughts thing after this as a way of sort of compiling my thoughts on the story as a whole so far, as well as just being open to answering your general ideas and open questions / suggestions about the story and characters and whatnot so far (and I guess to come?) So have at it, I want to know what you all think about these first eleven chapters as an introduction to the series / characters / plot / whatnot.
[No. 11 - Bakugou’s Starting Line]
Tumblr media
That is… a lot less damage than I thought there was. Like, it still looks pretty bad, but not to the point of ‘it’s going to collapse if someone breathes funny’ bad like I was thinking before. The active explosion of the panels before this probably added to that impression. Also, the building is a LOT smaller than I thought it was?
And speaking of Katsuki’s mental breakdown! He’s just standing there in complete shock while Tenya is comforting a vomiting Ochako, and Izuku is passed out on the floor. Someone points out that the losing team is almost unscathed while the winners are down for the count - they lost the battle but won the war, so to speak. Tsuyu points out that it’s just training though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(to the tune of ‘Final Countdown’) It’s a mental breakdown~ (kazoo solo)
But in full seriousness, this is the first true moment we see of his worldview being smashed open. Like, he was definitely shaken with Izuku’s actions back with the sludge villain, but Katsuki was just more quiet and sullen. Here? Here he’s just had one of the pillars he built his entire mindset around - that Izuku was weaker than him - torn down as violently as the wall he blasted open. He is not okay with this. He’s sweating, he’s shaking, he’s probably about five seconds from collapsing to his knees and screaming.
Fortunately, he’s mostly knocked out of his own head by All Might showing up and placing a hand on his shoulder, telling him to head back so he can get graded. Katsuki doesn’t really seem to be listening as All Might goes on about how whether one wins or loses, they can come out ahead by learning from the experience - instead he’s watching as Izuku is taken away on a stretcher by two transpo-bots to the nurse’s office.
In the monitor room, All Might announces that the VIP of the battle was Tenya, much to said boy’s surprise. Katsuki is looking pretty gloomy and stuck in his head, while Ochako is still struggling with the lingering nausea. Tsuyu asks why the VIP isn’t one of the hero team who won, and All Might asks the class if any if them can guess at his reasoning.
Momo raises her had and says she does, and then explains that Tenya had best adapted to the scenario. Katsuki’s actions were motivated by a personal grudge, and his use of destructive attacks indoors was foolish. Izuku’s performance suffered from the same faults. And Ochako lost focus halfway through and her final attack was haphazard - if the weapon had been real, the attack would be unthinkable. Tenya, on the other hand, formed an actual counterstrategy, and thought about what the struggle would be like. His only fault was being too slow to react at the end, and the hero team only won because it was a training exercise with exploitable restraints.
Tumblr media
Tenya is touched. Meanwhile, the rest of the class is stunned silent, with All Might shaking because she said it better than he could. He hesitantly adds that Tenya was a bit too stiff, but otherwise she was correct. She huffs and says that they need to start at the bottom and work up - if they don’t cheer each other on, they won’t even become top heroes. Her name is also introduced here, as well as the fact that she’s the number one recommended first year.
How’s Katsuki doing?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eh… we’ll come back to you in a bit. For now, the other battle trials! Shouto and Shouji (hero team) versus Ojiro and Hagakure (villain team), in a new location. The heroes are both quiet, while Hagakure is getting hyped up and taking off her gloves and boots to go full stealth mode. Ojiro is a bit flustered at that, thinking that it makes sense for someone invisible, but that it feels unethical.
(Which is, I’m guessing, that comment that her ‘hero costume’ is being buck naked, which honestly, I refuse to believe. If the support companies can make a costume for someone who goes impermeable (which, by its own definition, would mean light goes through as well, ergo ‘invisibility’), then she can get one as well. I think she’s just a troll who says the costume is nothing to fluster others - I mean, considering she does like hidden camera shows, and they tend to do those weird stuff to surprise or discomfort people, it would fit in line with her character.)
Anyways, when the hero team is sent in, Shouji is listening in just inside the building with several arm-ears, right before they shift into really concerning-looking mouths to relay information. Shouji tells his partner that one is on the north side of the fourth floor, while the other is on the same floor barefoot - clearly, the invisible one is trying to ambush and capture them. Shouji also gets a title card and an explanation of his quirk, Dupli-arms: he can replicate his own body parts at the tips of his tentacles!
Shouto warns Shouji to get out, since it’s about to ‘get frosty in here’. Their opponents think they’re playing a defensive game, but it means nothing to him. He then proceeds to show off just what he means by ‘frosty’.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s a bit OP there. Poor Ojiro - and definitely poor Hagakure, who got frozen to the floor with bare feet. Shouto walks in and says to bring it on, but that fighting without the soles of their feet will be painful. All Might and Kirishima are shivering in the monitor room from the cold, with All Might noting that neither Shouto’s ally nor the weapon were harmed when he immobilized the enemy; Kirishima says that he’s too strong.
Hagakure’s hurting where she’s frozen, and Ojiro is freaked out and not even trying to break out as Shouto walks past and puts his left hand of the weapon, giving his team the win. Shouto apologizes to them as the ice steams away, Ojiro shocked to see how quickly the building is warming up. As Shouto finishes melting the ice, he declares that they are in different leagues - and we get his title card!
Tumblr media
Number two recommended first year, quirk Half-Hot, Half-Cold (which I think is supposed to have some greater pun or sound better in Japanese? [Hanrei Hannen] I suppose does roll a bit better, but hmmm…) His right side can freeze things and his left can burn. His range and limits are unknown - what a beast!
(Katsuki, meanwhile, is biting his lip to keep himself from saying anything - likely another blow to his preconceived belief that he was the strongest right while he’s trying to come back from the last one.)
We get a brief summary of what the other teams did: Sero and Kirishima played villains and defended with Sero’s tape as traps around the room. Tsuyu went along the walls while Tokoyami had his quirk primed to attack. Jirou scouted with her quirk while Kaminari kept a charge prepped in his hand, and Mina threw a ot of acid around, a bit of which burned Aoyama’s cape.
We transition to the end of the class, with All Might telling everyone well done, and that besides Izuku, there were no serious injuries. He complements their teamwork and says they all did splendidly, considering it was their first exercise. Someone in the class mentions that after Aizawa, a straightforward class that that was almost a letdown. All Might walks away, saying that the teachers are free to have no-nonsense classes if they like, and that he’s off to give Izuku his evaluation, letting them know to get changed out of their costumes and head back to the classroom before he runs off in a hurry. Mineta notes he seems to be in a hurry, but that he’s also so cool.
Tumblr media
All Might glances back, seeing Katsuki in the back of the class still in a gloomy state. He thinks about how Katsuki is ‘a bundle of conceit’ and how the most inflated egos are often the most fragile. As a teacher, he needs to give the boy some counseling, but for now, he has to save on his time, due to only having enough strength to get through a single class.
Which, considering All Might’s limit before USJ is three hours, seems a bit weird, so let’s do some math.
The villain teams have five minutes to set up, and the heroes have fifteen to get to the bomb after that - twenty minutes. With five rounds, that’s an even hundred minutes for the exercises, not counting those that ended early. With all the time saved from Shouto’s instant take out and assuming average times for the others, we probably have more like eighty minutes spent on those exercises. Of course, we can then add time for getting to and from the buildings, as well as the assessments of each match and determination of the VIP. So that can probably bumped back up to 100 minutes, maybe closer to 110? Which would just fit within the bounds of a double-class period for Japanese schools (which are fifty minute classes with ten minute breaks in between).
Japanese classes have four periods before lunch and three after. The ‘canon’ schedule has heroics lessons happen THROUGH lunch period, which makes no sense when they need that energy in order to be able to fight. I am also skeptical of fighting right after lunch, when that makes it more likely for them to throw up if they take a bad hit, ergo, the reasonable time period for these lessons is the last two periods of the day - thus giving the kids about an hour for food to digest and energy to get into their systems.
I think this is also added onto with how Izuku doesn’t freak out after this over missing a class, which makes sense if it was the last one. Plus, well, scheduling the most exhausting and injury-prone class at the end of the day means that anyone who needs to rest a while actually can without missing important things - and that the kids won’t be too tired to pay attention to whichever teachers they would otherwise have afterwards.
...right, my original point. All Might is supposed to have three hours, but gets stressed out after using just two hours here. I can get that maybe it’s three hours total, but holding it for two continuously without chances to ‘unflex’ and rest for a bit might be straining on him still? Or maybe he just spent some time that morning doing hero things and so ran out of time a bit early.
Anyways, I think I’ll end this off here, since it’s about halfway and we did get through quite a bit. Next time, we finish off the opening arcs of the series, and then I guess I do some Q&A / personal thoughts so far / narrative analysis / whatever? I guess send in questions or thoughts or whatever you guys have, and I’ll answer them after the next post.

Beginning and End by mightbewriting: Years. Broken into months into weeks into days—into hours, minutes, seconds—into moments. Simple at one end, complex at the other. In Draco’s experience, moments, even when simple, had a habit of becoming irretrievable. Moments grew, stretched, multiplied into ages and eras that defined whole stretches of measurable time. Draco regretted several moments in his life, some within his control, some without: all of them irretrievable in nature. At a certain point, wedged between ‘what-ifs’ of his own devising, he’d stopped trying to keep track of those regrettable moments: now and then, pushing and pulling, coming and going, beginning and end. Break for me by Ada_P_Rix: COMPLETE _______________ "-I told them this wouldn’t work.” He cut in through gritted teeth as he kept his eyes on Hermione, making her pulse quicken and she couldn’t help but clench her thighs together at the rough, husky tone of his voice. He didn’t miss it; his eyes landed on her thighs and they darkened even further. “I can’t help her when all I feel like I want to do is pin her down and fuck her into the mattress.” _______________ Hermione gets into a little accident at work and is infected with a hybrid potion created to cause certain heightened side effects. Draco offers to stick around to give his work partner a little support ... if he can Occlude long enough to resist her... E, 7 Chapters, 45,107 Words

Bring Him to His Knees by Musyc: Draco is on the case of a murderer, but to investigate, he needs a fake relationship - and a kink club play partner. Dark Water and Dying Eyebrights by bexchan: One of them is desperately trying to remember their past while the other is forever trying to escape theirs. But a familiar face in a cafe window capsizes his world into chaos. Dramione. EWE. Memory fic. M, WIP
Difficult by provocative envy: COMPLETE: "I should," I repeated. "But I don't want to." And then he smiled, and I was wrecked. HG/DM. M, 30 Chapters, 87,041 Words
