Watched Meti not the bad guy's video on roland from ruina

and it reminding me of many beats of the game (and even telling me new things since i havent read the original orlando story and not every single piece of side text from these games) and my final conclusion is library of ruina is currently the best piece of media i have ever engaged with

Warnings: Referenced character death… and Descole isn’t perceived in the best light here— at least, from Melina’s perspective. His actions might be more understandable with context from Azran Legacy

Note: Written for Day 3 of @layton-npc-appreciation-week for Eternal Diva… Descole’s not under-appreciated but Melina and Janice most definitely are.

“You must sing if you want to save them, Melina—“

“Was it true?” Melina interrupts him. 

She‘s not sure where this newfound courage comes from (maybe it’s from Janice), but she stares at Jean Descole as they’re lifted into the air with the stage and the Detragon.

“W-when I was alive,” Melina recalls, “you said you wanted to save me, as you hadn’t been able to save your own daughter. Was any of that true?”

Below her, she hears Luke yelping and the wolves growling. 

If Melina angers Descole, he could easily order the wolves to attack her father and her friends, but she can’t help it. 

She’s angry and she wants to know…

What could drive someone to such lengths— to value an ancient city over human life?

Descole doesn’t deign to answer her.

The stage stops moving. They’re so high up now— high enough for Melina to see the whole island, and inside the castle.

The wolves have her companions surrounded. One has poor Luke pinned to the floor…

Descole turns to the Detragon’s keyboard with a toss of his cape.

“I didn’t think so,” Melina huffs. 

She might as well be poking a dangerous bear right now, but still, she persists. (Maybe she can buy the others some time to escape from the wolves!)

“How could it be true? A loving father would never kidnap o-other people’s daughters— let alone steal their lives—“

“I haven’t stolen anyone’s life,” Descole spits, spinning around to face her again. He seems so incensed that Melina is startled for a moment. Is this sore spot for him?

(Luke had whispered to her, while they were being ‘escorted’ to the dungeon earlier, about the masked man’s deeds in Misthallery…)

“It was your ‘dear father’ who invited those girls to host your memories,” Descole sneers, as if Melina needs reminding. “I simply provided him with the means—“

“You’re right,” Melina agrees. 

The love and the gratitude she feels for her father clashes with the shame in her heart, but the latter conquers all else.

Amelia was lured here, with the hope of winning eternal life for her dying granddad.

Little Nina dreams about returning home to her family.

Janice’s parents don’t even know their daughter has been dormant for a year.

“M-my father must face punishment for what he has done,” Melina says firmly. She glares at Descole. “And so will you.”

Melina has gone too far, this time. 

Descole surges towards her. Terrified, Melina takes a small step back— only to remember how close to the edge she is.

Melina swallows. Surely a drop of this height would kill her. It would kill Janice. 

Descole realises this too.

He grabs her by the wrist. 

Before, when he was discussing the songs of Ambrosia, he had almost been gentle with her— as if he were handling a delicate ‘instrument’…

Now, he grips her arm as if he wants to shatter her bones. 

“Sing A Song of the Sea,” he breathes, “or I will throw your beloved’s body off this machine.”

Melina quivers— all of her courage crumbling away in an instant.

Janice… I’m so sorry… 

Melina doesn’t even care about the kingdom of Ambrosia. Descole can have it! Anything, as long as he lets Janice, Father, and the rest of them go…

“Don’t make me do it,” Descole says through gritted teeth.

“P-please…” Melina is ready to submit to his demands, but then, Janice rises to the surface of her mind and mutters, “You’re a soulless monster—“

Janice, stop! 

Melina clamps her free hand over her mouth. She hates having to stifle Janice, but she’s going to get them— herself— killed!

Descole stares at her, his mouth slightly open. Melina imagines his eyes widening as well. Would he be any less intimidating, if she could see his eyes? 

Much to Melina’s immense relief, Descole releases her and storms back to the Detragon’s keyboard.

He starts to play A Song of the Stars. 

“Sing,” he orders once more, “and I swear, on my daughter’s memory, that I will send your loved ones home, unharmed.”

“A-Alright,” Melina concedes. She has nothing to gain and everything to lose, unless she complies.

You’re doing the right thing, Janice assures her.

Melina nods, takes a deep breath, and begins to sing.

mdzs, and especially the cql, sit at such a unique place where they are both the prequel and sequel to themselves which makes it such a uniquely cursed work. like it has all the trappings of both in all the best (see worst ways). it starts at the end but also the end is only the beginning. half the characters that we meet (especially in the cql where the flashback starts and mercilessly does Not stop and there's this Growing Sense Of Dread the longer it goes and the worse things get) are dead from the start-they were dead before we even met them! there's no fixing what happens, no changing it-and yet because it's also a sequel to itself there is a new beginning and the story does keep going after it's done and I just think that's neat

alright big obnoxious nwos ideas factory has returned im so sorry. and just a disclaimer before i start this isn't something i expect to happen at all its just something i'd want to see

so i know ppl are mixed about whether or not they think lmj/lmda should be retconned in nwos, personally i don't think it should, mostly bc i see hilarious potential in steam bison being where luke and marina first meet. marina IS from america so its not impossible

cause like i LOVE the idea of marina and luke starting off as rivals, like maybe marina was steam bison's original puzzle solving golden child but now theres this horrible little bri'ish boy that's her age that is hogging her limelight and marina and luke become rivals immediately on who can solve more puzzles to invent more things for steam bison

and then when layton enters the picture marina is like "whats wrong triton are you so terrified of my studious whimsy that you had to ask your grampappy for help" which just fires luke up even more

and maybe make some team rocket shit with it where if you quit on a puzzle marina has a chance to steal it from you or some shit which will add an incentive to keep players from giving up too easily lest marina spawn in to roast you

and then eventually throughout the story marina and luke just kind of fall into working together because above their rivalry they realize their main goal has always been helping steam bison and even though they cannot stop bickering no matter what they bond over that common goal

and then idk maybe at the end of the game luke is like "blimey marina you sure were ace back there golly crikey i gotta say you really are knockout with puzzles" and marinas just like "your insufferable squirrely britishness is growing on me like a fungus. i guess there are worst things in this world than us working together"

and like then idk maybe layton sees himself and claire in them, but in like a good, non-traumatic way. and that gives him peace with her and allows him to leave steam bison feeling like luke has found his own way, which is all he wanted for him throughout the game

and that ending could like explain how luke and marina ended up solving mysteries together as stated in lmda, and is nwos does well you could have luke and marina as older teenagers in future entries and develop them from friends who work together to the cringefail unemployed malewife and longcon cult-infiltrating girlblogger they are in lmda

idk i just really want to see them do more with marina because as fucking boss as it was for her to pretend to be a cultist for over a decade just to save her loser husband in lmda, they never really showed the determination and bite in her personality that it would take to do that. i want them to take her out of the anime wife personality box they put her in during lmda and make something of her

In the year of our lord, 2024, some of the fandom is still approaching the Jedi Order with zero nuance

#I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love the Jedi. I love the lore. I think they are extremely interesting. #they did do many great things and at their core had good intentions for the most part #but they were a deeply DEEPLY flawed institution ESPECIALLY during the prequel era #and people saying the Jedi did nothing wrong and they were right about everything missed the whole picture. by like a mile. lmao #they were FAR from perfect. it’s okay to admit that. #towards the end ​the Jedi became utterly apathetic and arrogant and it absolutely contributed to their downfall #and especially the council who were supposed to be these wise masters #when the entirety of RotS was literally Anakin’s cry for help and they either dismissed or shamed him #side note: that doesn’t make all the horrible things he ended up doing okay #BUT he was in an incredibly vulnerable position and Yoda and the other masters intentionally PUT him in those situations #and took ZERO responsibility #not to mention all of the padawans they turned into child soldiers during the clone wars #I could go on but. dragon age 2 is usually treated like a skippable inquisition prequel but I want to break my silence and say that inquisition in fact feels like trespasser/dreadwolf prequel much more than da2 does

#like. the best part of the inquisition is its dlcs. especially trespasser #it has an intrigue. high stakes. a meaningful confrontation. it makes you care a big deal #which main inquisition plot just. doesn't. #it has cool quests! it keeps you busy! but oh man. i can't help but get an impression that writers were just bored most of the time #because this game starts to feel more alive and distinctive only when solas gets his spotlight and i may be wrong about this #but that's the feeling I get every time I replay or think abut dai #this game feels more like a setup for events to come than an exploration of its own plot #it's not solas negative tho because I personally love the guy and want to see where bioware is going with his character arc #but yeah. there's a prequel-y prequel in da series. but this is not about da2 #dragon age
