TFW you’re a lifelong Disney Princess stan but you only just discovered Sofia the First because back when it was airing you were a teenager and even though you still watched cartoons you figured it was harmless but clearly for little kids and you wouldn’t get anything out of it but it’s the year of our lord 2023, Bluey has already killed any pretense you had about being unable to engage with shows aimed at the ages 3-6 demographic, and Athena P. just put out a lore video about the show and suddenly you’re following the adventures of a friendly, overworked baby princess with godlike powers who ends up doing all the work of diplomacy and protecting her kingdom even though there’s a living king & queen and she has two older siblings and her queer coded evil-but-not-really sorcerer dad who is constantly belittled by every other bitch in this kingdom but at least he has his daughter and also I’m pretty sure the actual Disney Princesses are all long dead and this child is being mentored by their ghosts-

Volcano Update: Feb 8, 2024

Seeing as I started picking up followers when I posted about the blue lagoon shenanigans and incoming lava, I know why you're here, so, let me tell you what's up.

Look, this is gonna be a bit of a repeating post in the foreseeable future. Geologists are calling this a "gosatímabil" or an "eruption period" (roughly translated) that we've officially entered since a couple years back. On the Reykjanes-peninsula there are several towns, our international airport, the blue lagoon, a power plant, and a geothermal heating plant (you know, because Iceland being obviously quite volcanicly active, we also have some hot groundwater for heating our homes!).

What the eruption period means is that we're gonna see little eruptions of lava pushing up through the earth in that general area for a little bit at a time, over, and over, and over, and over, for a while. It can last a couple of years. It can last a couple of decades. It's a little unclear how much of this we can reasonably expect but...

We got fresh lava again!

Note, that because it's doing this on-again off-again thing, it might have stopped even by the time I hit post on this, so you might have missed the display, also it's not as awesome in daylight so....

Anyways.

It's not on the edge of town this time, so people's homes aren't directly in the path, but that doesn't mean it's all sunshine and superheated rock rainbows. Remember what I said about the number of towns and the power plant and the heating? Yeah...

Much of the peninsula is currently without hot water and it may take a whole day, even more, to fix that. In February. In ICELAND.

People are also being asked to conserve as much electricity as they possibly can because the lava that's already fucked up the hot water pipes is threatening to damage power lines.

So, the rule is still, don't be a fucking ghoul. Even with an eruption far enough away not to chew through someone's home with all their possessions, their lives within it, it's already making people's lives more difficult. Fortunately, this is Iceland, so folks likely have good coats and socks and so on, but a prolonged hot water shortage can result in cold water freezing in the pipes which can cause damage that goes unnoticed until heating is restored. And while the warmth of the ocean mitigates the cold of the air to some degree, it still gets cold enough to die here.

And if the power goes out, there go the electric heaters people might be relying on right now.
