You’re telling ME universe that after I spent $$$ at HPB during the holidays (with gift cards thank you) to find TVC, I just randomly come across some at Goodwill (yesterday 8/19) after walking around a horror convention??
Also this goodwill specifically I found other Anne Rice novels like The Mummy and Violin.
Not pictured is QoTD which I had that cover/edition and I’m sure TVL was either missing or purchased. I did buy 4/6 books pictured 🤷🏽‍♀️

I went into town today to get one book. They didn’t have the one I was looking for but I found some sales and ended up leaving with five…

controversial opinion about incredibly niche subjects, but i actually like the use of the universal ‘he’ in the narration of Left Hand of Darkness. I like it for the same reason that everyone hates it, and Ursula Le Guin herself regretted it: because it doesn’t fit.
The book is ostensibly written and translated by Genly, or by the observers that came to Gethen before him, and the central struggle of Genly’s story is his inability to give up the gendered frameworks he’s used to in the face of a situation where they don’t apply at all. Having that baked into the language indicates just how deep that struggle runs. In order for him to understand Gethen, to connect to Estraven--hell, to understand himself--he needs to give up on this idea of gender that is so fundamental to his cultural background that it’s baked into his language, and that’s just as much of a barrier to true connection as Estraven’s memories of Arek are to their use of mindspeech. Having that reflected in the text itself, and showing Genly struggle with it as he writes, is actually a super effective way to not only show this tension, but also draw further attention to the limits of Le Guin’s English-speaking audience.

Something I'll never understand is how apple elitists will find ANY excuse to bring up how they have [apple product] and you have [not apple product]
Like that annoying new guy that was in the breakroom and would not shut up (I get you're bored but it's 7am and we don't care), had walked past me and saw how small my phone is. It's not SMALL but it's not like the length and width of my hand, iPhones are like at least 1.5 the size now.
Anyway he was like "damn what kinda phone is that??" (Meaning what iphone is that) *sees the big SAMSUNG on the top "oh you got samsung. But I bet you USED to have an iphone before right?"
Why would you assume that?? That's such a fucking weird thing to say like unprompted to someone. And I was like no??? I've always had androids?? (And LG before smartphones lol) And it's like they always assume you didn't have a choice, and only got an android bc you couldnt get an iphone. Like no I think iPhones are pieces of garbage, I hate the way the app store works, and the only apple products I've ever had were ipod touches. I like being able to choose where my apps go and can download "non-approved" apps and shit. Bitch I CHOSE this phone bc I LIKE it. I only got my other phone (which IS iphone size) bc this one no longer gets service from the network I use. I use this one for everything but calls and texts, and my actual phone-phone for calls, texts, and sometimes youtube. I paid like $100 max for each phone, I ain't paying more than $150 for a phone that's gonna be slowed down by the company I bought it from in a planned obsolescence scheme to get me to drop another $500-$1000+ in a year or two.
But yeah apple superior you're right 🙄

Did you know. There are just. Books? About anything you can think of? And you’re allowed to read them! You can! You can just...pick them up and read. And you’ll get to learn about SO MANY THINGS. Did you want to know more about Seabiscuit? You can read about him. What about the dog sleds that delivered antitoxin to sick kids? Yep, probably several options there. How to identify native mushrooms? Check. Want to read about shoes? yeah I’m sure there’s at least one or two books on the topic. I haven’t even checked I’m just THAT CONFIDENT because there are SO MANY BOOKS and you can just READ them.  But there’s a catch: you can’t read all of them at once. That’s how they get ya.

my favorite thing abt cale tcf is that if he really truly wanted to avoid the plot and live a peaceful life like he always says he couldve just completely avoided choi han and let him pass through or whatever but instead he personally invited him in and immediately started plans to prevent the horrors of the future war like yeah sure he was doing it to keep himself safe but he did it in THE MOST convoluted plot involving way possible like if he really TRULY wanted to stay safe and alone he couldve just not done Any of that. unfortunately for him he has a bleeding heart

Next read!
Since I'm going to my local comic expo next week, and am of course bringing a book, I decided to read a smaller mass-market paperback that's easy to carry around. I might finish this before the expo, which means choosing another small book, but that's all right because I have quite a stockpile of them on my TBR.

no resolutions bc resolutions are for punk ass dweebs but i have a massive massive tbr and to watch list that i have been ignoring for too long now and 2024 is going to be the time to tackle it.
i'm the kind of person who rarely ventures out to find a new show to watch and sticks to their comfort shows (GBBO, Seinfeld, Bridgerton, etc.,) and movies and only watches new media if i KNOW i will love it because i am very stingy about how i spend my time to a fault. well, no longer!
