• I dont see Finn as being one to care for the hustle and bustle of the city, so you, Fionna, Gary and Marshall help set them up in a suburban home on the outskirts of town where it’s a bit more quiet

• There’s A LOT to catch them up on, so it’s best to take it slow and explain things as they come along.

• When you decide to get him a cellphone, he is utterly clueless. Eventually he learns how to text and he sends them as if they’re formal letters, signing his name under each text.

• Spent about 10 minutes on the Internet and that was enough for him to ban it from his house forever.

• Finn eventually finds work building sheds and fixing roofs for people in the neighborhood, though it takes a little while for him to get used to using power tools. He’s glad though because they make the process much faster.

• Trans Jay headcanon here, but he is absolutely thrilled to be able to get gender-affirming care, something he never even dreamed of being real back in his universe.

• All the kids are enrolling in school for the first time, and while at first they hate being away from their dad for so long, they start to make friends of their own and become engaged in learning all these new things. It makes Finn a little sad to not have his babies with him all the time, but he’s glad to see them grow as individuals and interact with kids their age.

• Marshall takes Little Destiny under his wing and becomes like an older brother to her, which she desperately needs familial connections in her life after her biological family rejected her.

• The kids are definitely happy to not have to eat the same soup everyday, they want to try tons of different foods (if you introduce them to candy they will go crazy for it so make sure to work with Finn to limit their sugar intake)

• Finn isn’t interested in learning to drive at first, cars just seemed too complicated to him, but after a few weeks of walking all the way to the school to pick up his kids the teachers beg him to get faster transportation.

• Eventually he takes some classes and gets his license. He drives a pickup truck that always has tools and things in the back.

• Overall he’s very glad that he and his kids no longer have to fight to survive, and now he can just relax and not have his guard up all the time.

okay. So I've finished book 1 of keeper of the lost cities for the first time. And I'm loving this keefe dude already?? Like I never thought I'd like a fictional character so quickly. All it took was like one page for me to fall for him, I am aware that keefe is one of the most loved characters in the fandom, and I can see why (correct me if I'm wrong).

Also the book is a solid 9.5/10, the only thing I was frustrated about was probably the slight info dumping about the whole blackswan thing towards the end? because it took me like 3 reads to understand the whole situation, of course, we could just narrow it down to me being slow too, lol. But I'm VERY excited to continue reading the rest. So while we're at it, I'll put in my first impressions of the characters, so I can look back on it after I've read all the books, to see how much my perception has changed of them.

Sophie- i like her, she's really mature for her age, I keep forgetting that she's like 12 lmao. But she's well written, her emotions seem very raw and natural. Of course, she may seem overpowered but, I think that's the whole point of the story, she is supposed to be overpowered, so I don't mind and i wouldn't call her a Mary sue. Overall great protagonist, my girlie deserves a break tho, she got dumped in the hospital atleast 6 times lol.

Fitz- i actually think he's cool. I liked him better in the beginning of the story tho, I feel like afterwards, the dude kinda just disappeared a little? Keefe and Sophie seemed to have more private interaction than those two, and keefe literally only came by in the middle. But yeah, I feel like he had more of a personality in the start. Keefe and Dex, in my opinion had more personality in 5 minutes than fitz did the whole book, but I wouldn't judge so quickly, it's only the first book after all, Hopefully he'd have more page time in the later books. I still like him tho, just not as much as keefe.

Dex- Yeah he is such a typical best friend, I love him. His beef w the vackers is so funny lol I was relieved when Sophie stuck with him even after she became popular tho, also, he seems to have a crush on sophie right? It's kinda obvious, but overall friendship goals 10/10. I vocally "AWW-ed" after he said "are you kidding, i can't wait to tell everyone that you're my first friend" like I need a guy bestie like him :(

Alden- honestly, my heart warmed so much with his father-like dynamic with sophie tbh. He seemed to genuinely care about her well being, but I don't want to get too attached to him tho, just in case becomes a traitor or some shit later on, you can literally never tell with the adults lol. I've read enough books to back that up. But yeah, i really like him and della, the amount of reassuring hugs he gives sophie really heals me :(, They're like sophies 2nd (well, in her case, 3rd) parents. The amount of effort and lengths Alden put to get her out of trouble is actually sweet.

Elwin- This guy is such a W. He is like an adult keefe tbh. He is probably my favorite adult so far lol.

Cassius- I'm sorry, but Mr jerk face over here reminds me SO much of Lucius Malfoy??? Like ?? I feel so bad for Keefe, like poor baby leave him alone smh. I really wanna deck his royal highness in the face tbh.

Biana- absolutely loathed her in the beginning, she gave off such bad snob vibes lol but I love her now. I like the trope of two people forced to be friends w eachother by someone actually end up becoming friends. It's rather uncommon as far as I've read, atleast.

Grady and Edaline- is it bad that i thought they were going to be evil? Yeah I have so much trust issues, it's concerning. But yeah, they're both big W's, their backstory, their temporary contemplation to reject sophies adoption, everything aligned well with their backstory. Greatly written characters.

And last but not least, the king himself, Keefe- okay, he's like added to my list of fictional crushes now lol (along with Percy Jackson, Jason grace, Steve Harrington, chat noir, Eugene fitzherbert, edmund pevensie and Ravi singh ofc). How does sophie not have a fat crush on him, like- ma'am if you don't want him, I'll take him. But jokes aside, he feels like the most authentic character out of them all, tbh. Epitome of great writing. He was inserted to the story as this random dude that sophie runs into, and becomes an og in like 5 minutes. He is like a mix of Eugene from tangled, Kristoff from Frozen and chat noir from mlb all at the same time?? I cannot wait to see more of him and his backstory, especially with his parents. I know alot of people dislike the humorous guy with depression trope since it's overused, but I like how it played out on keefe, he uses school as an escape, which is very relatable.

Also, bonus, i LOVE the world building, the light leaping and all, very creative. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2

(quick note: I do not know anything about watchers and I'm still trying to learn Hermitcraft lore, so this may be inaccurate)

Winners of the life series all have two things, an eye marking on the back of their neck and a strange connection, as if they can feel eachother and communicate without ever interacting.

Think of it like this: when Pearl fell to the infection that Gem spreads, Grian gets the notion that something is wrong with Pearl, as well as the feeling of an infection spreading.

Now think of the Eye man that runs Purgatory. Guess what? He is a watcher, and Purgatory is just another life game, no better or worse than secret life or last life.

And the moment Phil kills Tubbo and wins, all of team BOLAS?! gets connected to each other and the other life series winners.

Grian, Scott, Pearl, and Martyn are all overwhelmed as like 10 unknown people all send similar signals, first is “BOLAS BOLAS BOLAS” then “Find the eye!!” Then “Our kids! Give us our kids!” Then finally, “RUN! GET TO THE BOAT!! WHERE ARE THE OTHERS?! MY KID!!” As well as overall feelings of despair, anger, and fear.

While Bolas is too focused on finding their kids and then trying to escape, the other winners are so overwhelmed, that all four just mentally shut down, staring off into space for a good 30 minutes or so.

Things eventually calm down, leading Grian, Martyn, Scott, and Pearl to wonder what that was about, as well as Bolas wondering why they can hear each other's thoughts.

I will probably do more posts on this, specifically why Phil is not in good contact with his siblings, explaining my headcanons for life series/watchers, diving into why none of the siblings started out with no wings but all 5 have them now, and more :)

I’m taking this from Twitter, but basically this thread about “Say something BAD about the show Monkie Kid” came up and my biggest gripe so far has been :  The show has way too short episodes. Like, 11min30. And tries to do SO MUCH in those 11min30 that either somethings get scrapped (DBFamily but not just that) or big important elements get solved way too fast (Samadhi fire and broken scroll among other things). And it steams I think from the fact that the show went from episodic to serialised while keeping the same amount of time. 

I ramble :  I see a lot of newcomers say that they jumped s1 and 2 and really started with s3/4, and while everyone has their reasons I think that’s silly Because that format is what made me love the characters and settings in the first place. The episodes are short, so the show can only focus on a tiny thing, but sprinkled LBD being a menace throughout the season, with the spider gang being a menace. And now ? lBD is still reveared as one of the best villains, and Spidergang is still very appreciated. Same thing for DBF : Red Son was slowly developed through s1, and returned on s3 Granted he wasn’t in s2, but since he was a major part of s1, and the spider queen special, we grew to care about him and the family to an extent. Because that’s what the show is good at ! Characters interactions, character personalities, CHARACTERS !! And now, the show is going for serialised, which is great and maintains attention, but it wants to do too much with the same amount of time: - In s2 : LBD took 10 ep to build her mech. MK started slowly to grow, and his relationships were explored one ep at a time. Slowly. - In s4 : we lose SWK, MK meets Azure, we learn about Tang, Pigsy and Sandy through their ancestors, we start to question MK’s existence, Monkey MK, the scroll is a menace, Azure betrays the group, MK loses his mentor and morale, DBF is important but scrolled, the JE is defeated and BAM world explodes we have to kill God in 4 episodes now. 

Granted for the characters as well it feels rushed. We don’t have to see everything either. Of course. They have a life outside the show. And overall they did a good job in those 11 bloody minutes 30.

But

But.

Now that we have a bit of breathing room, maybe it’s time to have that character moment by episode we’ve been asking for instead of cramming feelings and heartfelt conversations in an episode while the world is teared apart outside. Especially since we’ve seen the characters go through hell for a whole season. MK needs to breath but he isn’t the only one. We could have an episode on Red Son and his time in the scroll, an episode on MK going monkey a whole episode, an episode on SWK and Macaque in coloc, an episode on Tang Pigsy and Sandy trying to get back to their lives since they’re the most normal of the bunch - technically (cuz apparently having episodes focused on them in s4 wasn’t enough to have conversations about it but that’s a gripe i have with the community for LATER). We could have SWK and DBF reminisce on their time together, since DBK is one of the last friend that doesn’t QUITE hate him anymore, or an episode on how Nezha starts rebuilding Heaven by himself while keeping the JE power safe, or an episode on Mei just being awesome honestly, like just Mei observing MK going insane and being the girlboss she is, especially since she went through the whole “excess power that could kill everyone you love” and is still living with that, in a way. That could answer where the Samadhi fire business went. Cuz like in real life some things are tamed but don’t disappear, she might still be struggling but has learned to live with it. And MK is going through a similar path. We could also have Red Son in this one since he’s honestly the most controlled in a way.

And through all that… discretly… the world starts to break apart again ? Tears appear and with it new monsters and ghosts of the past maybe start seeping from the Underworld ? Maybe an unmasked man tries to prevent Mk’s attemps at coming back to some normal because as long as he’s confused and scared he stays the Harbinger of Chaos ? Idk ! TL:DR A lot of critics I see sum up as « They should show this more, why did THIS disappear out of nowhere, this is wasted potential », which seeps from the show not having time to show all that happens at once. Maybe it’s time to take a breather and tackle the problems one at a time again, ep by ep, like in season 2. And then go back to « We’re all gonna die in 4 episodes » to get the panic back on track.

ok quick thoughts, spoilers behind the cut.

Pros:

Halle. HALLE. H a l l e. Her voice, her face, her mannerisms. They took what made Ariel special in the animated movie and built on it and she was the perfect person to pull it off.

Her beauty was distracting.

So glad they finally got a singer for a live action, I couldn’t take another B&B autotuned disaster.

Made me want to get to the nearest rock and play mermaid ngl.

I had my doubts with Jonah but he did a great job with Eric, played the shy, kinda awkward potato prince charming to perfection. Loved that they expanded his backstory and his interest in adventure and the sea. Also A+ for the movie knowing he had a white shirt on while surrounded by water and using every chance it had to drench him.

Eric still being caring and worried about Ariel even under Ursula’s spell? 10/10 no notes.

He came to chew bubblegum and be dreamy and he was all out of bubblegum.

Halle and Jonah’s chemistry was insane, I need them to do ten movies making eyes at each other.

Seriously the movie could have been 2 hours of them interacting in that library and it would have been money well spent.

Part of Your World and all reprises were ofc gorgeous. Vanessa’s Trick is haunting and exactly what one would want for a siren song. For the First Time is gorgeous and underrated, felt very Broadway-esque. Eric’s song was corny but in a good way.

The rest of the songs are adequate but are not as good as the original ones.

Gotta said, song aside, the Kiss the Girl scene was more endearing in this version. When she helps him figure out her name?

Melissa was good as Ursula and made the character her own, though I think she was not as scary as she could have been. Better than I expected, though.

The actress that plays Vanessa knew she had 5 minutes to make an impression and used them to the fullest. Delightful.

Cons:

The CGI felt unfinished and so did the color grading/lighting. I edited all the movie images in this post (just played with the saturation and the contrast) and I’m mediocre at best. HIRE TUMBLR EDITORS, DISNEY.

Halle deserved to wear more outfits, I can't believe Disney missed an opportunity to sell more dolls. Would have given her a dress for each day on land and the water dress. Mouse, I thought you liked money.

we could have had it all

Wanted more of her sisters tbh. And less Triton, Javier phoned it in imo. I know Triton and Ariel’s relationship is an important part of the original movie but idk if it was his half assed acting or me wanting more of the sisters, but I wasn’t moved.

Flounder's weird character design was saved by his stellar voice actor and Sebastian grew on me, he was hilarious. Scuttlefina was tolerable but gosh she’s always playing the same character, stop casting her in everything.

Less I say about Scuttlebutt the better. Kids are probably gonna love it, though.

The ending was kinda weird? It felt rushed and the battle with Ursula was disappointing. Which is a surprise because the OTHER stormy scene at night was wonderfully done. 

Up to Ursula taking Ariel back to the ocean it felt really cohesive but the second Triton appears to save her it was like they were trying to speed things up and it got... weird.

Didn’t mind Ariel being the one that killed Ursula, after everything she put her through.

Cannot believe the movie robbed us of Jonah screaming “I lost her once, I’m not gonna lose her again!”

Overall it was a well paced (up to the finale), entertaining, charming movie. Despite its faults, the only Disney live action I want to rewatch (outside MAYBE Cinderella).

8/10 Justice for the foam dress.

For me love and deep space was one of those ones where I had to warm up to it. Though it took me like 10 minutes lol. Aside from the stunning visuals I’d say the characters are pretty interesting. I personally like Xavier. At first I didn’t really consider him cause he was advertised as the cute princely type of guy. But then I got whiplash from reading his stories from the things that came out of his mouth because I wasn’t expecting it from someone like him. Like he’s actually playful/mischievous and bold with what he says though at times, but I guess if you’ve been around a for a few centuries waiting for your beloved and she finally is in front of you I can imagine how pent up he would be.

Interesting! To me it was mostly curiosity since it's praised for it's realistic art style and I wanted to see what is new on the otome game front. And overall, while I actually think there's a little too much to do in game, I do like it overall. I am just somewhat disappointed in the the presentation of the characters, given I didn't deep dive into the story yet though I am well-spoilered already, just slowly working my way through it, but they all felt very uncomfortable to interact with in the beginning. Sure it gets better the more you advance in their level and everything, but they weren't really captivating or inviting me to keep being interested in them. That's probably why I mostly switched from Zayne to Rafayel by now in terms of combat and reading his stories. I still love Zayne but damn, he is sooo hard to like. At least with Raf and Xavier you somewhat feel liked by them. And I say that while having an affection level of 34 with Zayne. I don't think I'll completely drop him, but yeah. He was my biggest disappointment so far.

However, I agree with someone commenting on my post that their personalities are good for yanderefication and your comment about being pent up is exactly the direction I see them going lol!

1) Which tour stop was your favorite?

London is always the best because it’s home. I also loved Tokyo, Harry went there a few years back and always talked about it and it was sweet to see the city from the POV of someone who loves it so much. We had a few days off before and after the shows so we were able to play tourists which is always fun. 

2) Tour fits! Which was your number one?

Hmmmm… this is hard but the last Wembley show. Heart overalls with no shirt. Delicious.

3) Harry's performed numerous covers on tour. If you had to choose, which has been his best for you? Which song would be a dream cover?

Hopelessly Devoted. I tried to get him to do Summer Lovin’ or really lean into the Danny Zucko of it all and go full Grease Lightin' but luckily for me - I still got what I wanted just a little bit after the show.

4) Lucky you, you've got access to any piece of Harry's merch you'd like. What are you choosing?

Our custom gazelles. That was my idea! It started with the custom final show shirts from the 2018 tour and now every end of tour run he comes up with something unique to give to all the band and crew.

5) Choose your favorite bathroom sign from Love on Tour

Kiwee. I still use it to this day!

6) Which opening act has been your favorite?

Wolf Alice! That was a special request from me - I showed Harry their music back in 2016. If I had a choice they’d be the openers from the very start.

7) You can add any of Harry's songs to the set list from any of his past albums. Which one?

Ever Since New York. You should've seen my reaction when he played it on NYC Night 15. He didn't give me any heads up. I was floored.

8) What are your very own essentials for being away from home on tour?

My work computer and film camera.

9) What's Harry like on tour? Any memorable moments, favorite crowd interactions?

I've been lucky enough to be with Harry through every tour in his career even through the tail end of the band. And I can honestly say this is the most relaxed I have ever seen him on a tour. He has his schedule down to a science. He wakes up in the morning after letting himself have a 'lie-in' (usually is up by 9 which to me is not a lie in but for a man who usually wakes up at 6 it is) we have breakfast together always. It’s a must. And then he’s off to the arena by mid-day while I work but I always make sure to get to the arena early so we can watch the opener together. And then I give him his space to do his ~rituals~ and watch the show from the back or the bleachers. One fun fact that not many would know is as soon as he gets out of a show and back to the hotel or home it’s straight to the treadmill to perform the show through one more time. So it’s a good 90 minutes before he’s in bed again. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

10) In honor of Harry's 30th birthday: Harry played at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms, CA on his 29th birthday. Aside from the show, how did the two of you celebrate?

This was nice because I didn’t have to actually plan the party! We had an afters at the arena filled with lots of cake from Hansen’s. We snuck into the golf course at the Madison once we got back to where we were staying - a very drunk yet memorable decision.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is... my favorite Godzilla movie?

Or: how the MonsterVerse changed my mind after 10 years.

I hate to be that person in a fandom who's constantly saying things like "the old stuff was great, but the new stuff sucks!" however, when it comes to the kaiju genre... for a time, I unfortunately got pretty close to that. I once rolled my eyes at the notion of the "Kaiju Renaissance," and how between Legendary and Toho it had "something for everyone" and thought that for me, that was only really true if you counted some of the IDW comics, the 12-minute Godzilla vs. Megalon short film, and the renewed availability/merchandising for the originals - which means I've recently seen about 20 classic films I never had before, including some of my new favorites, so in that sense, it sort of did feel like a Renaissance. It just wasn't feeling, at the time, like the newer movies had much to offer for me personally.

It isn't that I had a great many negative things to say about the MonsterVerse films, I just... didn't have a lot of positive things to say either. Due to a number of things I can now look back on as mostly minor nitpicks, there was a sense that they didn't even belong to the fandom I loved at all, and Toho's offerings as of late... had felt pretty much the same. Now, I'll have you know I do in fact love the heck out of Godzilla: Minus One, and in a way, that film feels like a great "part one" of my change in attitude toward the new kaiju boom, but in the end, I like it more because it's an excellent film overall than specifically because it's a kaiju film.

The Godzilla solo films, or films where kaiju are presented exclusively or almost exclusively as an antagonistic force, are *in theory* some of my least favorites of the bunch. I end up holding quite a few of them very highly on their own merits as movies, but what I'm mainly looking for in these films actually started with the original Mothra film in 1961 - the expansion of the genre from disaster film into urban/contemporary fantasy, and the treatment of giant monsters as spiritual, cultural, supernatural forces that can represent a whole slew of things other than a threat or crisis.

Now, if that just sounds like a fancy way of saying "giant monsters beating the crap out of each other" then you're not entirely wrong. I do love a good hero story, and it informs a lot of which films end up being my favorites. But there are other factors I find exceptionally strong in many of the classic films - personal resonance with the human element, the interaction of the human and monster elements, the overall uniqueness and earnestness of the story being told - that I just wasn't finding with the MonsterVerse.

...Until now

GXK SPOILERS AHEAD!

I went in not expecting too much from this movie. From all the hype surrounding it, I was prepared for a monster brawl I could sit back and have a good time watching, and that was about it. I thought the opening Hollow Earth scenes were cool (if a little gory), I laughed out loud in the theater at Doug's appearance, and since I was already spoiled on Scylla's death, I didn't take it too badly (she was my favorite of the MV original Titans, but since I wasn't that invested, it was easy enough to switch back into "oh, we were never supposed to care about them" mode).

Things changed as we got introduced (mainly re-introduced) to the human cast. It was specifically the car scene, with Ilene picking Jia up from school and the short conversation they have in sign, that resonated especially well and gave me the sudden hope that this film was, in fact, going to have a very strong emotional core. It sets both of them up for deeper, more personal character arcs than they had in their previous appearance in Godzilla vs. Kong, and that only continued as we got more scenes with them, and then added Bernie into the cast.

There's something I really love about the Ilene and Bernie scene - Bernie is, in a sense, a meme character, in that his laser-focused self-interest is continually played for laughs, but then we put him in a scene with an increasingly emotional and desperate Ilene. The contrast between the two of them cuts deep at the appeal to underlying humanity that we see play out with this cast, in small moments, across the rest of the movie. Jia was already the best character in the MonsterVerse, but she has an even stronger pull when we've been introduced to a deep emotional angst looming in the background of all her scenes. Ilene's worries about her strained relationship with her daughter are carried through and don't ever feel like they've been left behind for the sake of expediency. Bernie has always had a few serious notes to his character, but even though the jokes continue, his insecurity around being hounded by skeptics is eventually played seriously and he becomes much more than the memes by the end of this film. Trapper doesn't feel quite like he gets a complete arc of his own, but as the new addition, he has a great vibe and acts as a supportive presence for everyone else's arcs.

GxK is very much a "quirky people in a situation have decided to support each other" movie, reminding me very strongly of Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966), which previously held the title of my personal favorite Godzilla movie. And yet, given this specific cast of characters, both in literal dynamic parallels and how enjoyable they are to watch, I can't help but also draw favorable comparisons to the Heisei era Gamera films - which I hold in their own, higher tier that eclipses anything that's come out of the Godzilla franchise. I'd specifically mention Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995) as probably the closest comparison, both in character and overall tone. Both of those movies are already in my top ten, along with a few other comparable films like Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster (1964), which also has similar vibes in the human cast but far more direct parallels on the monster side.

As for the tone - great. GxK has one kaiju sex joke and one Skull Island style death, in something that feels like a "last hurrah" for the MonserVerse's previous sense of humor, but after that, it takes on a certain Showa-style earnestness for even the fantastical story being told. When there is humor, it has more to do with the characters' personalities playing off one another, and IMO, it works very well (I still think it could do with less green/yellow blood splatter and monster gore in general, but most of that is also kept to the beginning of the movie). Overall, the film doesn't feel like it's making fun of itself or the genre it's in, or if it does, it's doing so more tastefully than some previous entries.

It's probably well known by now that Godzilla himself isn't in this movie all that much, mainly relegated to Kong's backup - which is fine by me, as that's actually more or less my exact favorite use of Godzilla. He doesn't need to be the main character, or a significant narrative focus, he doesn't even need to be an outright hero, he just needs to be convenient. Godzilla showing up in all his glory, to make a situation at least slightly better for someone I care about, so I can cheer him on. That's all I ask, and this film finally delivers that. The best I can figure, the previous MV films either made him too brutal/vengeful or made his enemies too sympathetic, or some combination of the two, such that he never felt like he had that big hero moment I was looking for until now. But Scar King is just enough of a love-to-hate villain that it easily tilts the moral compass in Godzilla's favor, and this film even does make a point of having a few moments where Godzilla chooses to set his rage aside and spare a former enemy (Scylla and Tiamat notwithstanding. RIP to them, I guess).

Now, as for Kong - I've never been a Kong fan. I don't have much interest in watching previous Kong movies outside of Toho's versions and sometimes the 2005 film. The classic take on the character, with the kidnapping elements and inevitable tragedy, just doesn't appeal to me, but even when I wasn't quite sold on the MonsterVerse, one of the things I did acknowledge was that it was actually starting to make me like Kong. This film cements that, and I have zero problems that it's more of Kong's movie over Godzilla's (and for as much of the movie as the trailers spoiled, I'm really glad they managed to hide almost everything to do with Suko. His story has so much more depth than "Kong adopts a cute baby ape," it's actually wonderful).

(I could also gush at length about Mothra, but most if it would probably be incomprehensible. Just know that despite her small role and short screentime, she's at some of her very best here).

So yes, a MonsterVerse film has, as far as I can tell, somehow topped my list of favorite Godzilla films, and is now up there competing with Heisei Gamera and the third Rebirth of Mothra movie for my top pick in the genre. But the next question is, did one good movie actually change my mind about the whole MonsterVerse?

...Kind of, yeah. With as much as GxK made me love Ilene, Jia, and Bernie, I now immensely enjoy Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and I've found myself rewatching it many, many times just to see more of them, not to mention also appreciating it a lot more as Kong's film. Mothra and especially the focus on Monarch as an organization also brings me back to Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), whose characters I've since reevaluated and found that I also quite enjoy. Kong: Skull Island (2017) remains an enjoyable popcorn movie for me, also elevated slightly for being a Kong film and having Skull Island and Iwi lore, and Godzilla (2014)... is also part of the continuity, I guess. I do enjoy a lot of what it has to offer, but it's probably my least favorite.

To get serious for a moment, these days every new release, in any fandom I'm in, makes me feel like it might be the last one I get to enjoy, if not the last one period. And if that ends up being true about this movie, then at least I'd be able to say that as far as I'm concerned, the kaiju genre, if not human media in general, has gone out on a high note.

I'm not in a place where I can concern myself at all with sequels or spinoffs, anything we might get in the future. But for now, this is a good movie, and I'm going to be enjoying the heck out of it. I've seen it in theaters three times and counting. I bought the novelization audiobook and have listened to it twice so far. I'm writing a fanfic. I keep impulse-buying the playmates toys. I started learning sign language. I'm choosing to be not at all normal about this movie and if the world ended with it being my entire personality, maybe at least in some sense I'd die happy.

So from me, a classic kaiju film snob who could talk at length about how Japanese films from as early as the 1950s and 60s have more progressive values and better storytelling than modern Hollywood, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire gets an absolutely GLOWING recommendation. Somehow.

Another night in the Heroes dorm rolled around, and you were no stranger to their company. You all had known each other for a while- becoming friends with the group right before it was announced that they were going to debut. Now, roughly three years of friendship had passed, and you were basically the 7th member of the household. You could show up at roughly any hour of the day, and nobody would bat an eye. You’ve always been especially close to Hyeongjun, so when you both announced to the others a while back that the two of you had started dating, nobody was surprised.

The evening was going on as normal. Jooyeon and Jiseok were playing some game together in the living room, screaming at both each other and the TV. Jungsu seemed to be playing moderator between the two of them. You’d eventually hear a “Jiseok, calm down!” shouted from Jungsu, which was always followed by Jooyeon’s distinct laugh. Gunil, who was also a bystander to all of this, only seemed to be egging the two boys on with his own laughter, Seingmin, who was sitting in the corner, scrolled through his phone, and seemingly wanted to have nothing to do with the entire ordeal.

“How much time is left on the oven?” Hyeongjun asked you. It was his turn to cook, so you decided to pitch in and help him.

“Roughly 10 minutes,” you answered. You gave Hyeongjun a smile as he made his way across the kitchen towards you. He wrapped his arms around you, resting his head on your shoulder as you chuckled. “You hungry?”

He nodded, grimacing a bit. “The food smells so good,” he whined. You couldn’t help but chuckle again.

“I know,” you rubbed his back. “Just a couple more minutes.”

As the two of you basked in each other’s embrace, you heard a voice come from the doorway into the kitchen.

“Ew,” they said simply. You and Hyeongjun pulled apart to see Seungmin. “Can you guys go be cute somewhere else so you don’t spoil my appetite?”

Hyeongjun laughed. “Sorry. Dinner will be ready soon.”

“Thank god,” Seungmin scoffed. “Maybe Jiseok and Jooyeon will finally shut up while we eat.”

“I heard that!” Jiseok called. Just as Seungmin was about to make a snarky joke, the timer on the oven went off.

“Foods done!” You called. The others came racing into the kitchen, grabbing plates and serving themselves. Everybody sat down and began to eat together, marveling at how good the food was. Lighthearted banter took over the room as everyone ate.

“This food is amazing,” Gunil spoke up, looking to you and Hyeongjun. “Thank you for cooking.”

“Yeah,” Hyeongjun added. “Thanks for your help, sweetheart. Everything tastes great.” One of his hands found its way to yours, giving it a squeeze.

“Aww, sweetheart,” Jooyeon teased, batting his eyelashes. You couldn’t hold back the laugh that escaped you. Hyeongjun laughed along as well, being used to the younger ones' antics.

“Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that,” Hyeongjun defended in a teasing way. “Unless you want me to use other names. Like, babygirl, or-”

“Nope! That’s enough!” Jooyeon gave up as you and Hyeongjun started to laugh harder. The two of you didn’t use pet names often, but when you did you were commonly made fun of by the others. So, sometimes, you guys would call each other the cringiest names you could think of just to mess with the others. After that, the dinner banter shifted again, finding it’s way to a new topic of conversation.

Once dinner was over and everything was cleaned up, everybody went back to their own separate activities. You and Hyeongjun made your way to his room, tucking yourselves away for a long night of doing nothing in particular. Hyeongjun turned on a show, and you started rooting through his clothes, looking for something new for you to steal. You found a shirt that you liked and threw it on. Hyeongjun smiled adoringly at you, and then there was a knock at his door.

“Hey,” Jiseok called from the other side. “Can I borrow your tuner? I left mine at the studio.”

“Yeah,” Hyeongjun called back. “You can come in.” Jiseok opened the door and was instantly met with you in your new shirt. He looked over you.

“I like your shirt, (Y/N).”

“Thanks,” Hyeongjun answered before you could, handing Jiseok his tuner. “It’s mine.”

Jiseok let out a sigh, “Of course it is.” With that, he turned and left, closing the door behind him. Hyeongjun once again made his way over to you, wrapping his arms around you. You returned the favor, relaxing in his hold. Hyeongjun sighed.

“You’re taking that shirt home, aren’t you?”

“Oh, absolutely,” you giggled.

Flight of Icarus Chapters 1-5

Disclaimer: I’m not even going to pretend that I’m not upset about learning about Eddie’s love life or feeling a sense of jealousy. However, I am going to keep this as neutral as possible. If you think that me having these feelings diminishes any thought I have about the book then you don’t need to read these. 

The first 4.5 chapters I read out loud to my friends, and we had a lovely time until I got drunk and passed out lol

Now, let’s get into it. 

Spoilers for chapters 1-5 under the cut. 

Chapter 1:

The story starts with Eddie killing off Gareths’ character in D&D, which I personally love. We get some insight of the current members, and we now have a name for the previously Unnamed Freak, Dougie. Gareth gets pissy and leaves but Eddie follows him out and says that Gareth is allowed to keep coming to Hellfire and will even help him create a new character. 

We are introduced to Ronnie, Eddie’s aromantic best friend. I like her, she seems cool so far. She’s the current drummer of Corroded Coffin and they have a very sibling-type dynamic. Eddie did try and kiss her when they were 13, but she dodged him. 

This chapter we get a little into Eddie’s relationship with his dad. Al Munson started dropping off the face of the earth on and off from the time Eddie was in third grade, leaving him alone for days at a time before Uncle Wayne realized what was going on and dragged Eddie to live with him during these times. That is where he met Ronnie who lives with her grandma at the trailer park. 

Eddie gives Ronnie a ride home, where she reveals that she got a full ride scholarship to NYU, causing Eddie to break and fishtail and pull over from shock. He wants to be happy for her. Then a cop car pulls up and Office Moore is a huge dick to Eddie for daring to have the last name Munson. This is a regular occurrence. 

The chapter ends with the cop leaving and Eddie taking Ronnie home. 

Things I Liked: 

-Having a name for the unnamed Freak, even if it’s not what I would have picked

-Seeing Eddie interact with Hellfire

-Gareth’s character getting killed off lol

-Ronnie

-Uncle Wayne, and learning more about Eddie’s family. 

Overall, inoffensive chapter. Not bad. 

Chapter 2

This is a very short chapter. We learn more about the Hideout, and the owner Bev. Eddie works there bussing tables four nights out of the week and in exchange Bev gives Corroded Coffin a stage to play on for probably about 30 minutes at 10. 

We get to see how Eddie feels when he’s playing, and how he is on stage. He’s still only 18, so he’s occasionally a little clunky when introducing songs but he’s doing his best. 

This is when we get the first glimpse of Paige. We have to remember that in this book, Eddie is an 18 year old boy who is used to being treated like shit. Paige is new in the bar, and she’s the only person who’s paying attention to them playing, and she winks at him. 

Eddie simps. 

But I’ll give him that if anyone was actually paying attention to me when I’m doing something I’m passionate about I’d probably simp too. 

Eddie blasts through the set, and convinces the band to play the original song they’ve been working on. Jeff and Dougie aren’t sure about it, but Ronnie sees Paige, knows EXACTLY what’s going on, laughs at Eddie and goes for it. 

Ronnie pulls a “you owe me” by letting him pack up her drums because of this. 

Things I like about this chapter:

-Ronnie is a girl's girl, and the best wing man. 

-Eddie talking about how it feels to be on stage and in the zone

-Eddie has a part time job

-Eddie singing and writing his own songs. 

Short chapter, inoffensive. 

Chapter 3

Another short chapter

Eddie talks to Paige and continues to simp. I do like that he keeps the conversation about music though, you can’t blame the guy for wanting to hear about how they sounded by the ONE person who has ever actually listened. 

Paige went to Hawkins High and graduated two years before, putting her at about 20 years old. She has a brother on the baseball team and she works as a junior talent scout for a record label and the only way to move or or get promoted is to find a band to sign, but her boss hates everything. She’s only in town because her hoarder grandma has died, and the Hideout is the only place within 20 miles of Hawkins that has live music. 

The chapter ends without them even exchanging phone numbers

Things I liked:

-Bev bullying Eddie to do his job 

-Croak-a-cola

-Eddie desperately wanting to talk about his music with someone

Things I didn’t like

-Eddie Simp-son

-Corroded Coffin got booed off the stage at the middle school talent show for playing Prowler by Judas Priest, I will be ignoring this canon in future fics. 

Not much to say about this chapter

Chapter 4

Things get interesting. 

Eddie comes home. Home in this case is not Wayne’s trailer but apparently an actual house that Al Munson owns that Eddie lives at alone most of the time. 

Not tonight though, there are two pairs of boots by the door. Al’s back from jail. Again. Al Munson is big and boisterous and is charming and I want to punch him in his smug little face. He’s been in jail and has the nerve to tease and joke at Wayne’s attempts to take care of Eddie. Eddie isn’t into it. 

Wayne leaves, but not before offering Eddie a place to stay at the trailer, saying there’s a room for him ready whenever he wants it. Eddie declines. Wayne leaves. You can tell Eddie doesn’t know how to talk to Al. 

Al is in trouble. He owes some people money, about $10k. He wants Eddie to join him in stealing some weed from an undercover truck. There’s probably a million dollars worth of weed, but Al swears they’d only steal enough to pay off the loan. Eddie doesn’t want anything to do with this. Eddie tells him to go to Hell, Al sleeps on the couch

What I like:

-The dynamic between Wayne, Eddie, and Al 

-Wayne bringing Eddie groceries every few weeks

-Wayne in general, he’s the best damn parental figure ever 

-Eddie telling his dad to go to hell

-The implication we’re gonna get Munson’s 11

Chapter 5

Eddie helps Gareth create a new character. Jeff was the one to actually make Gareths character before, and it’s nice to see Eddie being nice to his little sheep. 

Gareth leaves and Eddie chats with Ronnie for a bit before they hear a commotion. Gareth is getting bullied by Tommy H, Jason Carver, and a few other jocks. Chrissy Cunningham is also there trying to get Jason to leave. 

Gareth apparently owes them money, and a small scuffle gets broken up by Principal Higgens. Chrissy and Ronnie try and tell him that the jocks started it, but of course Eddie’s gonna get in trouble.

This is the chapter we get a cute little flashback of the time Eddie and Chrissy hung out at the talent show. It was actually pretty cute. Eddie and Chrissy were backstage looking at the audience, Eddie was looking for his no-show dad and Chrissy was looking for her mom who she wished didn’t show up. They each agree to cheer for each other, even if the other’s parents don’t. 

What I liked about the chapter

-Chrissy is a sweetheart 

-Gareth is still a little shit

What I didn’t like:

-Eddie calling Chrissy boring, basically. He basically said she was boring, but she did have personality once for the five minutes we talked four years ago. 

Fun chapter, inoffensive. I’m tired of writing now.

Okay I stumbled upon your blog and took the time to read your responses to those asks about interaction and comments and overall feedback and I get what you mean but also I think as writers we shouldn’t expect much from readers (much as in the comments you say you’d like to get) If you want those kind of comments very detailed about something on your story you could try beta readers (multiple). That way you’ll satisfy that need of comment and detailed feedback from more than just one person.

Fanfiction is not that serious for readers, unless it’s another writer who read your story and knows what it’s like to craft a story. Even then, not many writers read fanfiction (from what I’ve noticed) so you won’t get very detailed comments from someone who’s here for fun and not to study a story.

If you write just for the feedback I fear you’re posting on the wrong platform

That is the problem. That is the problem.

Like I totally get if you read fics casually, it's a once and a while thing for you - then don't feel obligated to leave a comment. Cool. If you read fanfiction before you go to sleep and you are sleepy-eyed at 3am - you don't have to leave a comment. Go the fuck to sleep.

But if fanfiction is your main source of entertainment and you read 5 fics a day, 10 fics a day, 20 fics a day (or if you read 100k fics often) - if you go back and re-read fics, if you download fics - that is a serious hobby. Even if you don't write, even if you don't think that take it 'seriously' - that is a serious hobby. And don't you think that you should forge a relationship with the person or people who have provided you with all these amazing stories - find some way to thank them and especially - fuel their creative process?

Like this isn't a fucking trick. If you discuss fics with writers, it will fuel their creative process and make them wanna write more fics. IT'S NOT A TRAP. IT B E N E F I T S YOU AS A FIC READER.

But also, a huge chunk of the problem is that I get very passive-aggressive comments or comments that feel like the person talking to themselves (like they are writing a personal meme blog text post in my comments section) - and people don't realize that writing a comment on a fic means that it comes up in my notifications. And then I am forced to read it with my eyes.

People saying that they are going to hell for reading my fic, or that my fanfiction is 'gross and horrible' (morally), or complaining that it's incomplete when I have a clearly outlined post schedule, people bashing the entire x reader genre right in front of my very eyes, people calling my main character stupid - the list goes on.

The minute you act like fanfiction is a product to be consumed is the minute you let yourself forget that there is a real human being reading all of your comments - it's not a fucking robot that your comments are being sent to, it's not some big account that receives 1000s of comments a day and will never see what you wrote. A person is behind that fic.

Also, just in general, I am not begging for comments or an increase in (quality) comments on fanfiction for me specifically. I am trying to improve the environment for all fanfiction writers because readers don't take it seriously. (I am not asking people to treat this like a fucking courtroom or something, I am just asking people to realize that fanfic writers are human beings. Please.) Readers do not acknowledge that fanfiction is a labor of love that the writer has worked hard on - and more people need to fucking acknowledge that, flat out.

I have made this comparison before, but people act like fanfiction is a mass produced candy like M&Ms - something that is made by the millions in a factory that should be gobbled up quickly because it's so easy to make. When fanfiction is a hand-pulled taffy - an art that takes years to perfect, and should be appreciated - the final product, and the process.

Yeah, I could get what I want or need out of a beta reader (though, imo, beta readers exist to critique fanfiction while it is still in the process of being written, and I am asking for a bit of feedback and interaction on fics that are already finished and polished as a little mental crumb of a treat for all the work I have done) - but that is like saying that if I want comments to change, I should just stop posting my fics and only send them to 3 or 4 people privately in DMs instead. Which is something I could do. But when I do that, it's when I have truly given up on the fanfiction community as a whole.

(And I'm not asking for 'detailed' feedback. I am just asking for one sentence that isn't passive aggressive and is about the plot of the fic. One sentence <3)

things I loved:

we got ‘they’re not worth you’, the title, a post-syngorn heart to heart and ‘my heart is someone else’s’

percy making her an arrow!! FINALLY!!

and she used that arrow to kill saundor. 10/10 poetic cinema

vex refusing to stand up against syldor for herself but snapping the minute he went after percy

the camera panning to percy right after ‘my heart is someone else’s’

and his anguished ‘vex’ahlia!’ when saundor cut them off

vex finally really getting the spotlight, showing the vulnerability behind her walls, her softness with velora and diving into her issues with rejection through saundor

like streamlining that interaction with saundor to be all about her loneliness and longing to be loved? perfect

vex actually getting to go one-on-one with saundor and getting the killing blow

‘no one apart from my brother’s ever stood up for me like that before’

things I loved less:

the ‘they’re not worth you’ conversation came off as a lot more casual, and I feel like it could have landed better if they’d had vex trying to fix her hair or her clothes or something (similar to how she was polishing her armour in stream) and percy noticing rather than it starting with his comment on his furniture

they also cut one of my favourite lines from that conversation, vex asking percy to stay by her side, which I can kind of see might not have made sense in context but I think was just so important for their dynamic and showing how much percy’s support meant to vex

the titling was perfect from percy’s end, but one of the things that made it land so well on the stream was that it did rattle syldor and I would have liked to see him thrown off even for a moment or two before going back to being snide

also feel that particular moment with the arrow would have held more weight if they’d had some lighthearted arrow flirting previously so it was emphasised how that one meant just that bit more

overall though my perc’ahlia heart is well and truly fed and I can’t wait for the slowburn to build up to glintshore
