Last Line(s) tag
thank you to @almost-a-class-act and @hellofanidea for the tag! sorry I only answered now it slipped my mind.
Um. Ok. So. I haven't been working on any stuff lately because ✨Depression✨ so I clicked on a random word document for this. So. Here's the last few paragraphs from a Winnix fic I left unfinished in 2021, based off the indie film Private Romeo:
It’s funny, Dick thinks. Funny how little they have in common, poor Romeo and he. The fancies of youth have never taken a hold of him before, not the way it has this boy, with his heart on his sleeve, daring the world to break it and make him into something poetry and songs could claim. Moving through the world with his head down and his hands as busy as he could get them, Dick always thought it wiser to keep his heart tucked in and away, protected and only feeling what his head would let it, fueling it with nothing but determination and character, building it all upon the moral compass so carefully handed down to him through the wisdom of the generations. He’d been a good son, staying carefully in his lane, living life according to the words of his parents, understanding their discipline to be an expression of their love and honoring them best he can. He never crashed parties he wasn’t invited too. He never made friends with those who drank their weight in alcohol. He never allowed himself to pine after those he could never have.
Or at least he didn’t, until now.
The moon is forgiving tonight, shining gently through the window of their tiny room to caress the sweet swell of Lewis’ cheek and the proud slope of his nose. His dark brows are drawn together in a frown, the corners of his lips downturned in distress. Dreaming again—of what, Dick isn’t sure. Lewis never tells. But it doesn’t stop the need in him to reach out and touch, soothe away the pain with the pad of his thumb, allowing the rest of his fingers to cradle Lew’s cheek, run themselves through the thick of his steel black hair.
Now that he thinks about it, they’d met very similarly to this, on that little patch of gentle sun that appeared every afternoon on that grassy hill behind their barracks in Fort Benning. Dick remembers it just like it were yesterday, perhaps because he holds on to the memory the way Lew holds on to his flask, taking it out for a sip every now and again, to feel the addictive rolling, crashing wave of warmth course through him until he feels it all in the crown of his head to his toes.
Lew had been dozing, left behind on a rare weekend when the bars and pubs of the nearby town could not hold his attention for long. Asleep, he looked his age, smoothed out and serene and boyish; long, black lashes fanning across his tan cheeks with a sweetness that made Dick want to kiss them until they fluttered open to reveal those large, brown eyes he’d been dutifully trying to keep out of his thoughts. He did nothing of the sort, of course. Instead, he’d shimmied down the slope to hover over this boy he’d only ever seen in passing, but whose image he’d always followed with his eyes, inexplicably drawn, and shaken his shoulder until he’d awoken, staring up at Dick with confusion.
“Hi?” he’d said, groggy. And that was the beginning.
Dick had never thought that his own love might be something poets would sing of. Never thought of it burning or hurting so keenly, drowning him in yearning and want. He always thought his love would be straight forward and simple.
Now, with his eyes slipping shut as he watches the steady rise and fall of Lew’s chest, he realizes that that, too, had been its own kind of foolishness.
And I'll tag whoever wants to do it!

I'm who sent the last 🧜🏾-ask you answered, thank you for taking the time, I don't remember my ask being this long. 🙈 I'm coming in with three different topics but offering my newborn this time.
- 🧜🏾: I suppose like when Emma saves Zane, yes. A jetski incident? I was imagining this happening when Lewis and Max have already started dating, because I thought the emotional impact would be stronger. Maybe even when Max already knows? Only because it bothered me that we never got a scene where Zana thanked Emma. Max going on his own mermaid hunt and accidentally pushing Lewis away in the progress would be closer to the TV-canon and make sense as well, so yes, that's good. I guess I just like them being protective and reckless for each other. 🥺
- 🧛🏾‍♂️🦇: You haven't shared much about this yet but I'm super intrigued and if there is going to be stories about a creature biting humans that Max heard, will there be worried, hostile reactions? People looking for "it"? What would happen if someone around Max noticed the punctures, for example? I see angst potential, but I'm also looking forward to hot Vampire sex, whatever that includes. 🫶
- It seems late fall has us all drawn into the creature hype and Lewis totally has this aura around him that makes it very easy to write him with supernatural elements to his character, but what about Max? An AU in which neither of them is fully human?👉👈
mermaid anon i'm so so sorry you sent this to me ages ago and i'd read it and then meant to respond but forgot but here i am !! hello !!
i appreciate the newborn heheee >:)
I suppose like when Emma saves Zane, yes. A jetski incident?
yeah so i was thinking something like that !! max out on the waters when he's not supposed to be, lewis mad worried. the two are together at this stage but max doesn't know lewis' secret, doesn't know that mermaids exist. lewis saves max and max is like oop, sea creature?? mermaid?? and he's a big non-believer so he Has to find evidence and it's eating him up and why won't anyone believe him? and lewis keeps rolling his eyes going ah don't worry about it, mermaids? are you mad? and max is like :/ i thought if one person would believe me it'd be you. and lewis is Torn but he also just can't tell max !!! so that leads to their break up. and then something similar to dr denman's research has to happen and max finds out and he's like, but this is Not the right way !! so he helps lewis out. then lewis 'gives up' his powers and they're still separate but max is hopelessly in love. and now that there's no secret, what's stoppin them? but then he does something innocuous with water and lewis backs away and max is like oh?????????????
🧛🏾‍♂️🦇🧛🏾‍♂️🦇
keep me under the charm! it's a good note of yours actually that other people have heard about the creatures, about puncture wounds. :).
and yess vampire sex !! i've written quite some sex scenes for this fic hehehee
An AU in which neither of them is fully human?👉👈
yeah so when it comes to 4433 and au's im not toooo big of a fan, with the sole exception of the h20 au. i'm more of an in-universe girlie bc their bonds are so Peculiar to me. but magical realism with werewolf!max, where he has to rush out at the full moon? how would he respond to the late las vegas gp, if there's also a full moon? but how would you explain that to the FIA?
or maybe magicians? sorcerers? sooo many ways this can go. i love the idea of supernatural elements :)!!!
thanks for all your lovely questions anon! sorry i took so long to reply <3

paper rings . . . ❨ send me a description of yourself + a fandom and gender preference, and i’ll ship you with a character. ❩
Hi! I’m Lily, I love formula 1, I’m straight and I’m studying to become a mechanical engineer! I love the private but not a secret paired with sunshine and grumpy tropes when I’m reading. I love making playlists for any given occasion, I like studying (but just because I like romanticising it) but I also love going to old rock bands’ concerts:)
My favourite colours are blue and green and I love animals. I like Rom coms, scary movies and crime documentaries. I’m very sociable and I smile a lot:)
I dress and act bit too mature for my age according to most people, but I think it’s a good thing. I like fancy dresses and galas, waltz and classical music. I love travelling!! Some of the countries I visitied and liked the most are Italy and Austria but I would love to see Spain and the Netherlands soon. I don’t think this is of any importance but from all the wags I love carmen and Lila the most. I think they have the best style and the best personality (ironically, even tho their boyfriends are the 2 drivers I am not really attracted to).
As much as I love a night out, I do prefer staying in and having a cozy and domestic night where everything is slow. Same goes in the mornings, as I like to be high maintenance at night and low maintenance in the morning, so I can enjoy it to the fullest. I’m not a morning person, I’m a night owl, but boyyyy do I love getting 8-9 hours of sleep on the weekends
Yeah, that’s mostly it about me! Congrats on the major milestone! Your work is absolutely wonderful!
LEWIS HAMILTON
so this makes so much sense to me idk why
both of you are very private people but ain't afraid to show your love for one another to the media
the two of you make playlists for each other to swap
and lewis will def go on study dates with you (he doesn't do anything just sits there and admires you)
lewis would probably be drawn to your maturity
but he would also encourage you to do normal things that people your age do
will 100% take you to every fancy gala and event on earth
you two are def the best dressed at all of them
and the two of you steal the show if you ever have to waltz
for you anniversary I feel like lewis would surprise you with a tour of all of the countries you haven't been to
and then you gush about how amazing lewis is to carmen and lily
the two of you love to party
but ultimately do love to stay home with each other and just be domestic af
lewis def does his skin care routine with you and you give each other tips and tricks

Recent books, fiction (including lots of retellings that I am a sort of a jerk about) -
Linden Lewis, The First Sister - reasonably strong sci-fi, quite solid for a debut novel. I picked it up and was drawn in for concubine narrative reasons; the most compelling of the novel's three protagonists is a young woman raised from childhood to be a one of an order of priestess-concubine women serving on spaceships and prohibited from speaking so as not to reveal the secrets they hear. I found this plotline affecting (as I would), but the novel as a whole needed to a work a little harder for the emotional investment of its readers. What was most striking was how vividly of the moment it felt within the genre - all these elements (neural implants, identity confusion of a somewhat dissociative nature, a particular relationship with empire, a particular handling of gender) felt recognizable as specifically characteristic of sci-fi of the past decade or so. I wonder how these stories will age.
Holly Black, Book of Night - this is Black's first foray into adult fiction; it's entertaining but not particularly memorable urban fantasy. Peculiarly, it bears a striking resemblance to Leigh Bardugo's first novel for adults, published a couple years back - both center around rough-edged female thieves (for a generous definition of thief) trying to work around wealthy men who are seeking power through magic while also getting entangled with a somewhat mysterious male love interest with an anguished backstory. This was fine. Black has always been a bit hit or miss for me, but this doesn't have the wild, self-indulgent edge of her strongest work, and the magic system is incoherent to the point of being distracting.
Swapna Krishna & Jenn Northington, eds. Sword Stone Table: Old Legends, New Voices - short story collection, new interpretations of Arthurian legends. Fine but not great. A few of the stories will stick with me, like Roshani Chokshi's Fisher King story about fate and Maria Dahvana Headley's epistolary retelling set in turn-of-the century America (interestingly, I haven't much liked the novels of Chokshi or Dahvana Headley's that I've read before?), but none of them deeply moved me or really made me see the originals in a new way. The modern retelling (by Jessica Plummer) with reincarnated (maybe?) Elaine as a barista will stick in my mind both because I was left puzzling over the author's choice of coffee orders for the Arthurian characters and also because it made me think wistfully about one of my old LJ friend's reincarnated Arthurian figures fic which I loved a lot and don't remember how to find again.
Gwendolyn Kiste, Reluctant Immortals - Lucy Westenra and Bertha Rochester are living out their immortal lives together in California in the 1960's when they have to deal with the reemergence of Dracula and Rochester into their lives. This was a cute novel in a lot of ways, but suffered from an unwillingness to commit too far in any direction - to its horror, to its humor, to its aesthetics. The liveliest parts of the book are when Kiste is setting the grotesquerie of Lucy's vampirism against 1960's Americana, and I think what the book really wanted to be was a kind of playfully feminist explication of the contemporary-set Hammer Draculas (probably without the Jane Eyre element at all, to be honest), but it didn't actually go there and so a lot of it fell flat. I was moved by Lucy's many deaths and her meeting Mina in the liminal space in between resurrections, but none of it was enough. Like another feminist vampire novel I read earlier this year (The Lost Girls), I theoretically appreciated its engagement with Dracula tropes from a different lens, but in practice it just played everything too safe, falling within this neat narrative of female revenge that is probably quite joyful for some readers but doesn't land for me.
Elizabeth Nunez, Even in Paradise - King Lear reset on Barbados. This didn't work for me; I found it scattered, tonally weird, and none of the characters felt emotionally believable.
Adania Shibli, Minor Detail (trans. Elisabeth Jacquette) - a contemporary Palestinian woman reflects on the rape and murder of another Palestinian woman by Israeli soldiers in 1949. This was moving and effective in its brevity, though the distancing effect of the one tragedy being seen through the other character's gaze/imagining was, I found, not quite what I ended up wanting out of the narrative. Interesting for my ongoing tracking of violence representations.
Katherine Duckett, Miranda in Milan - Miranda after the events of The Tempest tries to unravel the secrets her father has kept from her. This was enjoyable, at points quite so; the queer narrative was an especial pleasure after my Shakespeare group had just had a conversation about the pointed foreclosure of Miranda's opportunities for lesbian desire in the play ("no woman's face remember/save from my glass mine own"). But the plotting is pretty weak, and it's not as sharp a reading of the play as I would have hoped for. Still glad I read it.
Laura Sebastian, Half-Sick of Shadows - Elaine of Astolat retelling that I thought was just straight-up bad. Flat characters, incoherent world-building and relation to the legend (there are some pieces which are just imported assumptions from Mists of Avalon in a totally different setting), just really irritating.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau - premise should be clear from the title. This was solid, enjoyable, didn't change my life. This is always my experience of Moreno-Garcia - I liked her early novels and was excited to see her grow as a writer, but to my gaze at least she seems to have just...stayed consistent. I enjoy her books, but I always want something more - I wanted them to be weirder, darker, more emotionally intense. This was no exception. I'll probably keep reading her work.
