hey, have you heard that pillowfort has ✨ drafts ✨ now? (as in, the ability to save your posts as drafts.) they're still working on the queue feature (update: it's done!), but drafts are a big step forward!

in case you missed it so far, pillowfort is like a cross between tumblr and dreamwidth/livejournal, with a simplified dashboard reminiscent of old school tumblr and some classic livejournal features such as communities, threaded comments, and the ability to make individual posts followers-only or mutuals-only.

what are communities? basically, central hubs for posts about any subject you want that, unlike hashtags, can be moderated. they may have rules, such as "[subject matter] must be tagged" for example. you can post directly to a community or reblog existing posts to it!

since the site is currently experiencing some financial trouble, i thought i'd help out by spreading the word once again.

edit: the fundraiser was a success! crisis averted! i knew we could do it :D

why you should give pillowfort a chance:

no ads

no venture capitalist funding

no spying on the users

completely free to use except for optional premium features

nsfw is allowed except for sexual depictions of minors. if you're unsure what exactly that means, their tos may help

communities and the privacy controls mentioned above are excellent features

great community, low drama compared to other websites (so far)

the site's features themselves encourage genuine connection and good-faith conversation over endless "discourse"

every blog can automatically be filtered by original posts only or reblogs only

reasons not to join:

if you enjoy algorithmic social media. there is no algorithm at all

if you want to post or look at machine-generated art. they're still finalising the wording and personally i hope some exception will be made for models trained on ethically sourced images, but basically an anti-AI rule is in the works (update: finished!)

if you cannot live without reblog additions (reblogging with comment). all discussions on a pillowfort post take place in the comments section, and only your own followers see your tags. this has its pros and cons for sure! a similar feature to scratch that itch may be implemented in the future, but it will never be exactly like on tumblr.

if you need everything to be an app. the website works fine in a mobile browser and a progressive web app will hopefully be released soon (basically it's like an app in your browser and on mobile these can be added to the homescreen like real apps i think? they have push notifications!), but there's not going to be a native app available through official app stores due to the restrictions of those stores.

other factors to consider:

yes, the userbase is still small. depending on your interests, activity may be very slow. but we can change that! and on the plus side, reblogging your post to a community is a good way to easily get more eyes on it; way more effective than simply adding tags imo

the site culture is a bit different than on tumblr. many people read everything that's been posted since the last time they were online and don't follow more users/communities than they can keep up with. it's still somewhat lacking in shitposts and heavy on "essays" but don't be afraid to post whatever 😅

there are no blog themes like we have them on tumblr as yet, but you can customise your blog's colours and use html/insert links and images in your blog description

likes literally do nothing except to let OP know you enjoyed their post. you can't look at a list of all your likes. beware!

the staff is small and development is slow. some highly anticipated planned features other than the aforementioned queue include: - multi-account management - dashboard filters/reading lists - post bookmarking (since likes don't work that way) but we don't know how soon any of those will be implemented.

there is a user-developed browser extension (well, a userscript) called tassel available that adds additional features much like tumblr's beloved xkit :)

✨ okay, so how do i sign up? ✨

if you're interested but confused by the sign-up process or still under the impression that you need to pay to sign up (false), i'll put some clarifications and invite codes under the read more below. plus a note on donating, premium features, the paypal issue etc.

in a nutshell:

it's free

signing up without an invite code is possible, but you may have to wait a short while - supposedly less than an hour atm. just submit your email to the waitlist

if you don't feel like waiting, you can either use an invite code from an existing user or pay $5 to sign up instantly

every user gets plenty of invite codes and we're all willing to hand them out at the drop of a hat. they're really not hard to come by

ok so paypal doesn't like working with sites that allow nsfw. as a result, you need a credit card in order to donate to pillowfort, buy one of those insta-registration keys, or subscribe to premium features*. i personally happen to have a credit card and would be willing to help out anyone who trusts me enough to send the money to me via paypal, but i realise chances are only my friends will do this.

some users are currently organising various activities for the purpose of letting people who only have paypal contribute to the site's survival. it's not super relevant for new users and won't get you access to premium features, but i thought i'd mention it anyway in case someone loves the concept of the site so much they want to support it immediately. a fundraising community has been created to collect posts of that nature!

*premium features are strictly limited to two categories of things:

fun little extras that no one truly needs

higher image upload limits, because obviously big images take up bandwidth and are therefore a reason for increased costs

you will never need to pay for vital accessibility features or anything of the sort. :)

My thoughts on Watcher.

Been having some thoughts. Trying to be ok with this. I really wanna support them. I really do. It's not I don't wanna support them or i rather support corporations YouTube or patreon but I'm a college student. I can't afford any streaming service. I only have Netflix bc my mom wants it. I can't even pay it myself! You know how I desperately want dropout? How I watch crumbs of them on YouTube? I domt have amazon prime, hulu, disney plus. Not even spotify premium. Then how can I support Watcher besides that I must have money? Not to mention that I'm from Asia. 6 dollars is like around 220 baht. Not that I don't wanna pay that and admittedly it might not be much for a month but I really can't. I don't have credit card. Or any card to pay abroad. I can't even support their patreon.

With that said, I'm glad that there's people who are happy for this change and can afford them. I really wish I can be happy too. I only hope that they would reconsider to not make it exclusively payment only. Even if they support sharing passwords and all.

Though I feel like people who can support them financially don't get a say in why we can't be upset about this. There's probably many people in the similar situation that's why a lot of us are upset.

But then again don't go attack some people who can support them too. I saw some people got called bootlickers.

Still I hope that now they see feedbacks and will reconsider or make some adjustments. But then again I'm not in business, I don't know much. I just hope at least they don't abandon YouTube completely like dropout. Or that they still have their streaming service but have like parts where we can still watch for free and another premium or bonus content. Does this make sense?

Listen, I swear that when I got a job and a better financial, I'll support them but right now I can't do much besides watching and occasionally draw fnarts. I really still want to follow them.

EDIT: Final thought. If they're really doing this then I wish them luck and the best. I genuinely mean it. I really hope it works out for them. I hope this decision comes from difficulty and their best interests to keep making quality content.

Writing Resources

I've been writing all my life, and I've been saving resources I use over the past couple of years. I'm gonna post them all here, so that others can use them because some of these are rather obscure.

Resource: Character Profile Desc: a 20 page PDF file that helps you better flesh out your character. PDF is editable directly. Very useful for any type of character.

Resource: Character Sheet Desc: a very long character sheet hosted on DeviantArt. I'm not sure if it's still being updated, but it is VERY extensive and covers everything from the basics to pet peeves. Best used for the main cast.

Resource: Name Generator Desc: a site that hosts a number of name generators. You add a few variables, and it gives you a list of names. Has everything from a "quick name" generator to a "plot generator". Very useful for a variety of things (not just writing).

Resource: Worldbuilding Prompts Desc: a site with writing prompts. Pretty good for getting the basis of your world

Resource: World Anvil Desc: a site to house all of your worldbuilding. Basically acts like a wiki, but for worlds. Has a premium version, but the free version works just fine (but you're limited to 2 worlds and ~175 articles for each world). Can be used for any type of writing: creative, screenplay, even ttrpgs like DnD.

Resource: Inkarnate Desc: Map-making site. Pretty cool, and has assets that allow creation of dungeon maps, world maps, and even scene maps. The free version is a bit meh on the assets, while the pro version ($5/month or $25/year) is a lot better. Additionally, the free version limits you to 10 maps, while with the pro version, you can create ~1,500 maps. If you use pro and then cancel your subscription, any maps that you created while using pro will be locked. You will not be able to edit them. I learned this the hard way.

Resource: Gallery of Faces Desc: pretty much like the "thispersondoesnotexist" site, just under a different name. AI-generated human photos. Can edit the settings to include a specific age group, a specific sex, etc. Really good for people who aren't good artists and need/like having a visual of their character.

Resource: Fantasy Calendars Desc: Allows you to make a completely new calendar. You can choose the names of the months, weekdays, everything. It's an absolutely wonderful tool and really helps if you don't want to use a modern calendar. This is the calendar I made myself. It's just an example of what you can do.

Resource: Word Combiner Desc: a tool to combine up to 4 words together. Shows just about any and every possibility. Found this useful when trying to make a name or a language.

Resource: Fantasy Language Generator Desc: another generator, but for languages instead. There's a few variables you can mess with, and it'll generate counterparts to the 30,000 most commonly used words in English. You can save the language as a file and load it on the site at a later time. Completely free.

Resource: Word Counter Desc: Just a word-counting site. Useful if you frequent Discord & use bots like WriterBot or Sprinto (writing sprint bots), as you only have 2 minutes after the sprint ends to submit word count.

Resource: Worldbuilding Checklist :) Desc: a very extensive worldbuilding checklist. Covers everything from races to the economy to the current fashion trends. Really awesome resource.

All of these have proven to be really useful to me, so I wanted to share these. I just hope these are useful to others ^_^

Lilia loves you. He’ll always love you. He has loved you from the day you stepped into Twisted Wonderland and will keep his adoration for you. 

He had first heard about you from Malleus. He couldn’t believe his ears when Malleus had told him that the magicless prefect was not only unafraid of the most powerful and feared fae Malleus was, but also befriended that fae. He was over the moon Malleus formed such a relationship with someone, so much that he too wished to meet you.

He first took notice of you during the winter break. Oh, he had seen you before and yet, this was the first time he got to speak with you one on one. …You were everything he could have ever imagined. Never during his long, long time in this world had he met a person like you. He couldn’t describe it. You weren’t particularly outstanding, especially compared to the unique characters in NRC. You were you and it enticed Lilia. 

He started visiting you regularly. Popping in Ramshackle without warning and scaring you and poor Grim half to death (fortunately Lilia can bring some premium tuna and Grim won’t complain). He visited more than your first year friends did. And you had grown quite attached to your fae. 

It was Lilia who confessed his love first. Years of life experience made it slightly easier for him to get his feelings off his chest. However, it didn’t dispel the butterflies of his passion that fluttered- no, that swarmed in his core. His devotion was met with yours in kind. From this moment forward, your fate became woven in the obsession Lilia spun with his spinning wheel and called the spindle his love.

The students in Night Raven College had… quite some character. With their temper, their pride, their greed and their strong magic. They must be terrifying for a precious magicless human such as you. Why go anything when the people here are prone to being so reckless. I mean, look at all these overblots. Such honey-coated words were all Lilia needed to keep you in Ramshackle. 

“Why go out when I can show you a kinder world. A world for the two of us.” Lilia had promised. And he fulfilled that promise. He’d give you anything you desired; the new limited edition drink that was running out, the latest gaming console that was way too costly for a regular student, any furniture with the fabric you could instantly doze off on like Silver. 

Oh, you wanted to see other people? Lilia brought Malleus over too. He had even introduced you to Silver and Sebek. Silver was happy you made his father so happy and Sebek… was Sebek, but you could tell he was growing fond of you. Isn’t this nice? You, your friends and your Lilia. His perfect family. A family he wasn’t going to let go of. Of course he wasn’t going to, it was your family as well. 

Alas, even though Lilia had tried his best to stop prying eyes from gazing on you, you still go to classes. You wanted to learn about this world and Lilia wasn’t going to stop that even though he would prefer to tutor you. And eyes pried upon your form. 

Some foolish freshman thought it best to confess his feelings to you. Ha! How absolutely ridiculous. This freshman wasn’t the brightest, but Lilia supposes none of the freshmen are. However, this first year has some nerve, asking you out. 

“Lilia-” You gasped as your fae nipped at your delicate neck. You were back in Ramshackle, where you were most, sitting on top of Lilia lap.

Lilia kept pressing his lips to your neck, making red marks on your skin. How precious. “Don’t fret my dear. That man won’t bother you anymore. No one will dare make such moves on you again. I’ll remind everyone of our love.”

And Lilia kept his promise. You knew by now Lilia always kept his promises. You never saw that freshman again. You knew you could keep demanding and he’d warmly oblige. He doted on you, spoiling you as much as you wanted. The tenderness in his heart was all you wanted, after all. He wished for you to stay in Ramshackle, so why not? He was there with you, so you could always be amused and loved.

A Year of Sanderson End-of-Year Wrap-Up

When Brandon Sanderson announced his kickstarter for a year-long subscription box, I was so excited! But it's been the biggest let down ever. It was really expensive, and we really didn't get much for our money. I feel so ripped off. And more than that, it doesn't feel like there was a lot of thought put into the items. It was just a way of making a lot of money fast.

At the beginning of the year, I made this post: Guesses, Wishes, Hopes, Dreams..., in which I detailed the kinds of things I was hoping for from this subscription.

Firstly, the books. I said that I wanted the books to work as a set, so that they looked good lined up together. They half managed this. The books were clearly designed together, they're similar in style. But they don't work as a set. For a start, there are two blue books right next to each other. The spine layout is different on the third book as well, which is annoying.

The other thing I wanted was premium book features. Artwork endpapers, ribbon bookmarks, fancy foiling, gilded edges, slipcases. I got almost none of these. The covers were foiled, and there were decorative endpapers, although only the last book had full artwork papers. The only book with sprayed edges was the last, which had plain black edges. The were no ribbon bookmarks, no slipcases, and nothing to set these apart from any other special edition you could buy in a bookstore.

As for the goodies, or as he termed it, "swag"? A total waste of money. This subscription was so, so expensive. Even before shipping, these were more expensive than any of the other boxes I subscribed to.

In other boxes, you get an exclusive book, plus four to five items. In this subscription, you got a book or the items each month, not both. So honestly? I was expecting at least seven or eight items in the "swag" boxes. We got three. And the quality was lacking.

Box 1: Hoid For this box, I had no specific wishes. The only request I had was that it be "imaginative". On that, they failed. We got a t-shirt, some post-it notes, and some stickers. Essentially, promotional business supplies.

Box 2: Cytoverse This was the only non-Cosmere box, so this was the box I was looking forward to most. I asked for a slug plushie, a special edition of Defending Elysium, and some DDF attire. What we actually got was a pack of playing cards, an ice cube tray, and a little model spaceship. The model was good quality, so was probably good for memorabilia collectors, but didn't interest me.

Box 3: Mistborn I wanted a Mistcloak, and a Soonie Pup (I specified "like the ones in the newspaper clippings" because they were so cute!). I got a Soonie Pup, it's true... but instead of a cute plush toy, it was like, an arcade grabber prize? Gross! We also got bookends and stickers. The bookends are really nice, and one of the few items I'll be keeping. The stickers were a bit rubbish.

Box 4: Sel I didn't have any particular wishes for this one, which is good, because I'd definitely have been let down - I couldn't have predicted these ones. There was a wax seal and rubber stamp kit, but they were super low quality, so I didn't keep them. And some... magnets...? For some reason? And some plasters, or "band-aids", as the Americans say.

Box 5: Cosmere I have no idea why they did a "Cosmere" box, when most of the other boxes were also based around the Cosmere. I thought this might include a map, and I said that I'd be disappointed with a poster. This was probably the best box. We got a wash bag, a luggage tag, and some postcards. I like all these items, but it still doesn't seem value for money.

Box 6: Warbreaker I wanted a Nightblood letter opener, and that is what I got! It's sadly boring in appearance, but it's very practical, and kind of elegant, I guess. There were also some glass coasters, which were hideous, and didn't seem to have anything to do with the theme. And some... breath mints. Yeah.

Box 7: Stormlight I love Stormlight, so I was looking forward to this box. I was hoping for a set of pens shaped like various Shardblades, and a set of glass gemstone Spheres with LEDs inside so they glowed when charged, like in the books, and an axehound plushie. We got a Shardblade keyring, but it is way too big to be practical. And a mini figurine, which I very specifically didn't want to get. The last item is an over-the-shoulder bag. It's a really quality item, and I want to love it, but it's just so... nerdy. I know, I know, it's fantasy... of course it's nerdy. But this is too much.

Box 8: Sanderson Fan After this subscription, I am no longer a Sanderson Fan. I was hoping for something "Reckoners" and something "Firstborn", and I was expecting a 2024 calendar. We didn't get any of those. We got a notebook and a pair of socks. I also was hoping for another book. We did kind of get another book - we got a short story. However, it's left a bitter taste in my mouth, as this book has already gone on general sale, for only $12, or free as an eBook! So why did I pay all that money for these boxes?? What a rip off!

There has, since the kickstarter, been loads of amazing merchandise released on Brandon Sanderson's shop, loads of which looks really good, and which I would love. Instead, we mostly just got cheap tat.

And to make it even worse. We were offered, as a "thank you" gift, a set of pins. This was like, their version of a stretch goal. But when the boxes started arriving, they tried to pass it off as part of the "cost" of the box, like it was one of the actual items. This was especially aggravating, as the pins were the ugliest things ever.

Overall, the only things I'm actually keeping from the "swag" boxes are the bookends, the wash bag, the postcards, and the book. I cannot emphasise how much of a waste of money this kickstarter was.

oh yeah, its all coming together!

after weeks of filming and fussing with the editing software and converting so many videos to work correctly and overall just generally stressing about it i can safely say that i have (soft) plans to launch my first major wave of content by this weekend!

Hoorah, hoorah, the time has finally come! I’m sure it won’t be the only one, as we welcome the sign-ups for the 2022 Handers Gift Exchange!

The sign-up sheet is now LIVE and available here! As a reminder, this exchange is open to all forms of creative output - art, fanmixes, fic and edits are all equally welcome. If you have any questions that aren’t covered in the FAQ below please do feel free to get in touch - I’m always happy to help!

Sign-ups are open until Sunday June 5th, with gifts assigned the next Monday. Check-ins will be held over the weekend of the 2nd/3rd July with the final deadline for all gifts to be posted Friday 29th July at the latest!

Q. When will assignments go out, and when is my gift due?

A. Assignments will be sent out the day after sign-ups close (so keep an eye on your inboxes on the Monday June 6th!). You’ll be required to complete and share your gift prior to the Friday 29th July. That’ll give you just over seven weeks to finish a gift!

Q. Will there be check-ins?

A. Yes. I’ll be checking in with all participants halfway through the exchange - so on or around the 2nd/3rd of July. If you are struggling to complete a gift or haven’t started by then I would strong encourage you to flag this to me so that we can arrange a pinch-hitter if necessary. I understand that life happens, so I won’t hold it against you if you need to drop out - I just want to be sure that your recipient still gets a gift!

Q. How do I share my gift?

A. All gifts should be posted on AO3 and on tumblr. If you do not have an AO3 account please contact me and we will handle matters from there. Gifts should be posted to the 2022 Handers Gift Exchange collection on AO3 (I’ll send a link when I send you your gift assignment). Your recipient should be clearly tagged. Tumblr posts should tag in the handers-time blog so that I can find it to reblog it.

Q. How big should my gift be?

A. This is a difficult one to quantify, but for fic I have set a minimum word count of 1,000 words. This represents approximately 2-3 hours of work for an average person and artists and editors should therefore loosely consider this a benchmark.

Extra gifts - written as optional add-ons after you’ve completed your main gift - can be much smaller with a minimum word count of 250 words. There is no maximum word count for main gifts or for extra gifts so if you’ve got the War & Peace of Hawke/Anders in you bursting to be let loose then go for it - we’ll all be excited to see it!

Q. Is this an anonymous gift exchange?

A. No. You can post to the collection whenever you feel like it and on tumblr too. Just please don’t tell your giftee that you have them until after you’ve posted your gift!

Q. Are there any rules about commenting?

A. Yes. You must comment on any gift written for you. For a full gift, this should be a comment of at least 3 lines in length.

Q. I don’t want to sign up to the exchange but I’d like to produce extra gifts. What do I do?

Lovely to have you! We share the complete list of requests after sign-ups publicly - you can keep an eye on this blog for it. Anyone can create an extra treat - you do not need to be a member of the full exchange. Otherwise if you’d like the request spreadsheet emailed to you for premium gift giving, you can sign up as normal using the form above, but in the requests box just put ‘N/A - I’m here for the extra gifts’. I’ll send you the complete spreadsheet of requests when it’s ready and you can pick and choose which extra gifts to write at your leisure.

Breaking News from The Front Line: BTE Project Update and Goodies

Greetings, Dan here!

I come with news! Admittedly probably should have given you all an update before now. I'll see what I can do about that, but yes, the update! To begin with, Beneath Twisted Earth Free Version 1.2 along with an updated character sheet are now available to download. These new editions of the documents include some corrections, tweaks, and small additions. Specifically, the character sheet is mostly the same, just with a spelling correction. For the free rulebook, I made some small corrections in various sections, alphabetized the equipment in the garage to make it a little easier to find the equipment you're looking for, and in the same section added some rules for selling back your used parts to the garage.

Next, regarding the print and premium pdf versions of the game, progress has been slower than anticipated. They are about a third of the way completed. Unfortunately, that means my original estimate of Fall 2023 release is unlikely. I am currently in talks with a new graphic designer to see if we can speed up final production. With luck we might have it complete before end of year, but right now we're expecting a more conservative release of early 2024. The plan is still to have a print version go up on DriveThruRPG, as well as a premium pdf with some elements unique to that version on both platforms.  For no though, enjoy some more previews of the art that JGD has been cooking up for it.

Lastly, I just wanted to touch on some other plans in the works. I'm working on creating a community discord for Beneath Twisted Earth to serve as a gathering place for anyone interested in the game, but also include the tools players would need to run games in a centralized place. I don't have an estimate on that yet, but will post again when it's ready to go live. Also, for those of you who stopped by to check out the Mech Showcases, I'm going to be reworking those builds to remove the copywritten names. The new versions will then be bundled together into a pregen-mech pack for GMs to use as needed. I may even squeeze in one or two more mech showcases before then for mechs I've been wanting to build. (I'm looking at you Scopedog.)

UMM wtf happened with these two that Taylor's releasing the Eras tour movie on streaming and adding back in Wildest Dreams / The Archer / Long Live BUT STILL cutting Cardigan?! Cardigan?! The biggest single off of Folklore? Idk if I'm crazy but I feel like this means it really has to have some kind of even deeper connection to Matty than just the mouthing I love you at each other thing, like whoa. (Also I hope it's okay I sent this I was like !!! when I saw the news and didn't know where to go but desperately needed to talk about it)

I mean… there’s numerous reasons why she could’ve left the other surprise songs and cardigan off it… same with NBNC.

The way she is releasing the movie for rent however… that makes me lean towards the money grab of it. She eventually releases the rentable version to streaming then sells the “super deluxe extended edition” digitally to own / blue ray etc for a steep premium. Fans will pay for it. She’s proven that with the multiple variants of her albums.

I mean this isn’t going to last forever. She knows that. Might as well do whatever you can to make that money while you can.

it depends on the fic honestly, and how much i’m having fun writing it. i have to say drippin' came to me rather quickly. it was around 3 weeks but it was short compared to other fics and also i think the editing took the most time (also i was busy with uni back then so i don’t have all day to write).

for the characters i always outline them first, with fics with plot i make a whole profile even with things that sometimes don’t up in the story, with smut i only describe their personality and how they act during sex so i know how to stay in character, especially with the dialogues. i struggled a bit only with sweet deception because it was the nth xsome and i was DONE but i love how their personalities came out and also i wrote it in a week, so kudos to me. for the 4j i don’t remember, it took a while too but it was very self-indulgent so once i started writing i didn’t stop and i had their personalities very clear in my mind. THE poly fic is my baby, so writing xsome for them is as easy as breathing and i love playing with their dynamics, and the first piece was also very self-indulgent so i knew exactly how i wanted them to be, the other smut pieces came easily especially because i wrote the 'how they got together' story and i knew them even more. it’s not easy for sure, but i have fun. it's not about being smart or anything i'm just unhinged and have nothing better to do.

technically my ko-fi is up but i was thinking about switching to venmo because paypal sucks and i had some troubles with the account. the link is still up but i turned off the payment options until i make up my mind. also dw, as much as donations are helpful and welcome, you always leave feedback (also through reblogs, and that’s super helpful) so knowing your opinion and having your support like that is already more than enough, really.

welp.... looks like the next traditional V-pet is a colored version of the original V-pet, which is also rechargeable.

The bad news? They're back to having only one egg per device, so this is no version 20th. I hope they're not super expensive in this case, because I definitely want one of each... if it's from Premium Bandai, I might as well just forget about getting them.

Also it doesn't look like there's a stadium mode? Unless they fused multiplayer battles with the stadium.. either way, it's nice to see another traditional v-pet.

EDIT: It appears there is a solo battle function, but only against digimon in your back up. It also is only able to connect to other color devices.

So... interesting, a step backward and a step forward really.... it's like a wish on a monkey's paw...

But you know, I still really want one, I may prefer it to the DM20th. Of course, if these things are more costly than your typical Pendulum Z, I may have to skip it. Given my current situation, I may have to skip it even if they're reasonably priced.
