Kimi ni Todoke, age-gap relationships and shoujo sins
Kimi ni Todoke is probably one of the most popular shoujo romances of the late 2000s/2010s. The story follows Kuronuma Sawako, a 15 year old girl who cannot seem to connect with people around her due to her gloomy appearance and her name being similar to the character in The Ring—Sadako. As the series progresses, we see her being able to form deep bonds with those around her, including her crush, Kazehaya Shouta.
Personally, I love it. I think Sawako is a very special character who loves deeply and sincerely cares about the people around her, and it’s great to see how she starts to develop her communication skills to the point everyone can see her as the genuinely kind person she is by the end of the story. However, Sawako (and her relationship with Shouta) is not what I would like to discuss today.
Tumblr media
There are other characters to Kimi ni Todoke, and each is enticing in their own way. You have Kurumizawa Ume, Sawako’s love rival; Yoshido Chuzuru and Yano Ayane, Sawako’s first and closest friends; Miura Kento, a hard-to-describe-but-eventually-kind classmate; Sanada Ryuu, Chizuru’s best friend (and eventually, a love interest) and close friend to Shouta; Arai Kuzuichi, the homeroom teacher also known as Pin; among others. Today, I want to focus on Chizuru and Ayane.
Tumblr media
Ayane (left) and Chizuru (right)
Chizuru, a somewhat dense but loyal girl, has known Ryuu all her life, due to them living in the same neighborhood and spending their childhoods and teenhods together. Ryuu explicitly tells Sawako that he has feelings for Chizuru when they find themselves alone—however, he knows it’s pointless, because she has feelings for his older brother by eight years, Tohru.
When Chizuru reveals her crush on Tohru to Ayane and Sawako, they support her, without putting into question the fact that she is just a 15 year old girl and he is a 23 year old grown-ass man with a job, a driver’s license and a mortgage to pay. And I don’t blame them, honestly; at that age, we don’t tend to question the power imbalances in romantic relationships between teenagers and adults (especially between teenage girls and grown men, the most common example of this phenomenon), let alone in the 2010s, as it’s very normalized in both Japanese society and here. It’s a whole can of worms.
When Tohru comes back home for a quick family visit, Chizuru stumbles upon him at the Sanada residence, and she’s excited to show her how much she’s grown and her ✨womanly✨ side that she’s been working on. However, he walks in with his fiancée: a woman his age who he’s fallen in love with and expects to spend the rest of his life with.
Chizuru is, of course, devastated—she had been living with that crush ever since she was a little girl, slowly fueling it as she grew older, hoping that eventually the years that separated them wouldn’t be a problem when she eventually proved hershelf to be a woman and not just his little brother’s friend. But Tohru had seen her grow up, hadn’t he, next to his little brother as they caught bugs and played in the grass.
Next is Ayane, a very feminine girl who isn’t afraid to speak what’s on her mind and is also incredibly loyal. At the beginning of the show, it’s revealed that she has a boyfriend: an older guy, specifically a university student, that we don’t get to see the face of.
This relationship ends in disaster, because the guy grows jealous of the time Ayane spends without him—he’s jealous of her friends, of the fact that she’s still a high school student, and hates that she can’t devote every second of her life to him. When she tries to break up with him due to this behavior, he hits her in the face. She doesn’t let herself be intimidated and breaks up with him, though.
When the rest of the gang finds out, I personally believe there wasn’t too much outrage for what was done to Ayane, but I digress. That’s neither here nor there.
She then tries to date guys her age—you know, other teenage boys and not adult men—as she admits she’s never dated anyone who isn’t older than her, and she attempts it twice. It was futile, sadly, as she couldn’t actually manage to catch romantic feelings for either of them, despite how badly she wanted that to be the case with the second boy.
However, she starts developing a crush on no one other than her nemesis: their homeroom teacher, Pin, who is a bit of a gym-bro, incredibly hyper and also nosy as hell. The two spent a considerable amount of time butting heads in a myriad of situations, but Ayane was also aware that Pin genuinely cared about all his students and tried to help them as much as he could.
Ayane really curses herself for catching feelings for Pin, as she knows it would never be possible, and she believes it’s karma for dating the second guy without actually having feelings for him and giving it a shot knowing she could never reciprocate.
Pin, despite his odd behavior, is very aware of the fact that he’s a teacher and that he’s responsible for the students, so he never even slightly entertains the idea of dating any of them. In fact, he directly and consistently opposes the idea. There’s a misunderstanding earlier in the story, where Pin, being overconfident and conceited, believes that Ume’s feelings are directed at him and not Shouta. He doesn’t give her time to explain if that is or not the case, because he immediately starts to shut her down. Pin flatters himself, saying that it’s only natural for people to fall for him, but Ume is a ‘brat’ and she should be worried about dating ‘other brats’, not older guys like him. A consistent character trait of Pin is that he will never, ever, look at a student that way.
There are three different age-gap relationships* in Kimi ni Todoke, involving two different characters, and I think it’s there to explicitly state that, when it comes to teens and adults, things don’t work out.
Shoujo catches a lot of smoke in animanga circles, and one of the criticisms I see is the normalization and romantization of age-gap relationships. And, as a shoujo enjoyer myself, I can absolutely see that! One of my all-time favorite series is Fruits Basket, and my biggest beef with it is how they really go out of their way to portray age-gap relationships between literal kids and grown ass adult men as something good. Like, these dudes can literally buy a house and the girls can’t even vote at that age. You see it twice: first, with Katsuya and Kyouko, the protagonist’s parents, who were a teacher and high school student respectively, with an eleven-year gap that met when the girl was just 15; the second time, with one of the protagonist’s best friends, who falls in love with and starts to date a 26 year old man as a 17 year old. I have another guy in there under surveillance as well—Kazuma, you ain’t slick!
Hell, I can even see it a little bit in Lovely Complex, when Risa was feeling defeated after being rejected by Atsushi for the gazillionth time. She starts to force herself to like their new English teacher, Maity, solely because he looks like the main character of an otome game—which I can respect, by the way, because it’s girl math. Anyway, she isn’t the only student with a crush on him, and at one point, to help Atsushi realize his feelings, he even plays along with the whole liking Risa thing. And no one thinks it’s weird that a teacher is involving himself like that in teenagers’ business. And I am perfectly aware it isn’t serious, honestly, but I can still see this problem present in one way or the other even if it’s not actually being seriously considered as an actual plot point.
I’m someone who went to an all-girls school, and I saw first-hand how my friends got into relationships with guys who were way too old for them (hell, 8th grade girls dating 12th grade guys who were a couple of months away from being 18), and I can assure you that all of them ended in disaster. Now that we’re in our early 20s, wiser due to our prefrontal cortexes being closer to finishing their development, they can see how messed up their relationships were because they were at a disadvantage from the start.
I think Kimi ni Todoke does put in the effort to denounce these situations, and it’s something I appreciate from the bottom of my heart. Tohru loves Chizuru deeply, but he can only see her as a little sister and he makes it clear that she’s family to him. Ayane’s first (shown) relationship is with an older guy and it ends in disaster because they’re in completely different stages in life and want different things. And he’s also, like, a major asshole. And Ayane knows Pin would never look at her that way because he’s made it indisputable that that’s his position.
And, eventually, things work out for these girls. For the most part. All well that ends well.

MY PERSONAL HEADCANON OF THE DRAGON MAID CAST’S IDENTITIES
For context, Dragon maid is the first show i saw that has a same-sex couple in it as the main characters, so i have an emotional attachment to it. However, it is definitely filled with dubious stuff and things that make me uncomfortable!! (thanks coolkyoushinja (sarcastic))
Which is why i have created a version of dragon maid in my head that basically rewrites the series by taking out all the bits of canon that I don’t like and replacing it with my own interpretations! And that’s the version that all these headcanons exist in.
also i'm sorry that i made like almost all of these characters sort of aroace im projecting!!!
======================
My personal hc for Fafnir and Takiya’s identities are that they are both somewhere on the aroace spectrum but care about each other a lot, so my interpretation of their relationship is mostly platonic but also can be read as romantic because i toe the line between platonic and romantic interactions really closely lmao. Basically they don’t do much PDA, and the closest thing to “romantic” that they do regularly is cuddle with each other. I say cuddle, but its more like they sit really near each other and like... pile. idk how to explain it but you get the idea
Fafnir is aroace and also agender (He doesn’t really think about it until he meets Takiya, but he does deeply care for this human and would not mind being in a “relationship” with him, whatever that is. Also he typically presents in a masculine way but i really think he would not care if he was something else. Gender just isn’t a thing that matters in his mind)
Takiya is asexual and bi but in the most arospec way you can imagine. I don’t think he would label it but it's probably closest to bi-grayromantic and asexual (he’s very sex-neutral and also has a preference for men) Also he definitely still looks at things and think “oh that's pretty” but doesn’t really feel anything much other than that Also personally I like to think that he’s trans and has been ever since he was in like primary because I can and he’s just like me frfr
“They’re just friends, why can’t people be normal about it” well because i really like their relationship with each other and its really domestic and i think it can be read as more than just a basic “they are bros, pals, buddies”
“Why so many specific labels, just do asexual or bisexual or something” Because this is my headcanon and I get to be as specific as i want.
Kobayashi is demiromantic lesbian because i feel like she definitely knows she is attracted to women but when it comes to forming a romantic bond? would take some time with her actually getting used to and opening up to people (I mean that’s how she expresses her love for Tohru in the manga as well, took her a while to reciprocate and that’s only after she gets closer to Tohru!!) Also we’re ignoring anything that happens in canon. I like transfem kobayashi headcanon as well!! Her and takiya are both mlm wlw and ftm mtf solidarity i don’t make the rules
Tohru gives me unlabeled but really really likes women for sure, also she’s probably polyamorous.
Personally, I like to think Lucoa is aromantic and also on the ace spectrum (This one is entirely headcanon (as in no canon input); she’d still have a pretty flirty personality, i just think she really likes trolling)
Elma is full on demiromantic and demisexual with a touch of pan, also she is definitely polyamorous! Did you see her marriage arc in the manga (ch 106-111)?? She’s absolutely poly and personally her conversation with tohru in ch 111 really makes me read her as arospec teehee
Kanna and Saikawa are both children so i won’t speculate on their identities too much, but they are definitely not straight, especially Saikawa
Same reasoning with Shouta, but I think he is straight for now.

OK OK everyone today is the finally is out!!!
But before we start SOME IMPORTANT WARNINGS:
You'll play this game from Dorran's PoV,he's not the canon from Onyx's Route;but an alternate universe version with a different story(like from an eleseword version of a DC character or a What if ? version of a Marvel character).
This is NOT a redemption arc for Dorran, do not treat it as such. Because Dorran's Onyx(Original Canon) is UNREDEEMABLE. So treat all characters in JA-LIN story(all of this won't exist with JA-LIN thank you.) for the sake of story-telling.
This story contain a lot of serious topics that may or may not include:parental abuse, general abuse, violence, alcohol abuse, drug overdose,PTSD and suicide.
Please take care of yourself first, since mental health is always a priority and if you feel uncomfortable playing from Dorran's PoV, reading Dorran and Onyx's romantic relationship, or any of the topics that may be discussed please EXIT THE GAME. Please understand this is a non-canon work of fanfiction inspired by the original SWM story
If you feel otherwise enjoy it this awesome work:
-Each Abuser a victim,Each victim a Abuser-
-Samuel Stern Comic-
-Its better to break your own heart by leaving an abusive relationship, rather than having that person breaking your heart every-
-At any given moment you have the power to say, "This is not how the story is going to end"-
No matter your gender:male,female,non-binary,transgender,etc....No matter your sexuality VIOLENCE,ABUSIVE and TOXIC relationship ARE UNACCETABLE. Please ask for help your parents, your friends, police, seek and go to the closest Antiviolence Center & Shelter Home they will help you.
And as I promised a reaction/preview of SWM prequel, 3-2-1--go:
???:(We're born as monsters who masked ourselves as human to sin.To be human is to sin.
Our virtue is hidden behind our masks. When we embrace our inner monster is when our true selves is set free?)
ME: So you say human are monster and that are not so different from demons? OK, and the shadow self is your true self is the bitter truth of this world, Tohru Adachi would be so proud of you*1
Here we know the Main character and PoV Dorran Park who explain that as both Sin assassin and as the leader, everyone lives from the troupe to innocent civilians are his responsabilty but he comes to Las Vegas for personal reason as well:to throw his old life behind and start anew to be a civilian again, blend in the crowd, doing boring routine stuff. Start over, rewind, replay.
Seven months ago he takes to protect the innocent, the weak and helpless bystander who have done nothing wrong from the evils of the world
Tumblr media
(Pride)
Me:In which is soon see why is so blatant why youre quite prideful because as he say he choose to take this for selfish reason as well, after all hes only human so is in his nature to sin....Dorram!?! those are dangerouse troughs your and it will not absolve you anything you will do!
.Dorran:This is Las Vegas Demon Hunting Ground not even the purest soul is immune to sin, to addictive effects and demons are sin incarnate. This mission tonight is imperfect since my fellow sin assassin dont take this duty seriously! tey’re sloppy and not focused.
ME:Oh You’re brilliant and perfect.
Dorran:
Dorran relax,
You need to get laid (I guess Gabe),
Dont be a Mood Killer ( I guess Ranza),
Dont be a meanie ( I guess Ripley),
.....this and this. ( I guess Yvette,my Byronic wife errr ooops,Cal the Mono-expression,Floral Quack Nahara and Izaiah).
I’m not a babysitter and they don’t undestand thata this duty don’t allow us to relax.
ME:Hello you just confirmed their words, this job sucks so relax any time you can.....
Dorran:Nights like this make me wonder who will be the next leader after me. They dont understand how heavy this job is since everybody suck.
Cal has brain but he’s selfish and he think himself comes first before his teammates.
Ranza is impulsive and brashful like her sin(Wrath)
Gage and Ripley are too Kind-hearted and caring to be leaders.
Izaiah is good in theory but poor in application.
Yvette precise and skillful, but she also carries a large burden on her shoulders, but it would make a good leader.....maybe.
a week ago she said to have business to deal(Vuzgamad) and we haven’t heard of her since.
ME:Contrary of you Stupid Baka!*2
Tumblr media
Ripley,Izaiah and Gage tried to search her on Chatsphere*3 to no avail
(But I'm sure that is full of Ripley's meme)
ME:(For once agree,so she is like Juliette*4)
And since there's no update about Yvette i go on street, going on Vegas strip may be counterproductive but between prostitutes luring men, buzz neon lights, the scent of alcohol from stranger walking from around me is relaxing since is familiar to me*5 and they throw their mask away to be free and be their true selves .....
Suddenly Dorrand sense a different melody a soft beat who doesn't belong in the Vega's chaotic orchestra ...someone in danger!?! So he go after a possible demon brawl but in the dark alleyway there is no demon brawl but
Tumblr media
Her Onyx Wren!!! And while Dorran is lovestruck to see her Radiant Goddess wondering what she's doing here?
Answer :The Radiant Goddess is being screwed up again by her big sister, a second time! Despite she asked for help and the Radiant Goddess but she should have know better.
Dorran:(Damn, all those negative emotions are like siren song for demons its make them easier to found them,to inhabit them until they are 100% Consumated....and then Dead.
I've to calm her down or the demons Will be there Now)
The Radiant Goddess lie to herself:from being happy for sister success since her failed works gets her sister Vinca to finish on News! To not caring for that herself failed, everything is fine.
ME:Hint no😔.
Dorran:That's not everything's fine(What's she's lying to herself about ?) and who's Vinca?
ME:Well here the answer
Tumblr media
SHE IS VINCA WREN!!!
Dorran:Its seem that she's enjoying her victory and her facial expression can cut down anyone's confidence....and her face she's the Radiant Goddess twins?
But they're like the sun and the moon:
Radiant Goddess is the Warm Sun
Vinca is the Cold Night and like her namesake flower:mysterious, beautiful and deadly.
So we see that the Radiant Goddess is Onyx, that Vinca states its party time since Nitsa stated that every modeling agency in Vegas wants her and for a second pOnyx.... Dorran(Her smile its a mask,to hide her true emotion. We all wear a mask out of fear to be judge for our true inner self is she REALLY OKAY?)
And while the Twins speak and "enjoy the victory",Vinca's fan are being mean ad bully Onyx
Dorran:(people suck, how they can say those things?)
Onyx is silently drinking, while Vinca is mute and don't stop them.
Dorran:(So I'll do it!)
ME:.....
Dorran:There you are, we have to go over the costume designs tonight.
(This is the right thing to do and so I put myself between the nasty Vinca fan's and I let them know who really I am)
Vinca is nonplussed,Onyx mute and Vinca fan's drilling all over him....
Tumblr media
And he stated that Onyx is the only competent and passionate about her job. The others? Money and Fame.
And Vinca stated Onyx doesn't need them. She is the family pride and joy of her family, without her she can't do nothing, she needs me.
ME:Or you need her and won't to admit it yourself?
Dorran:(family are pride and joy, worth everything for) As you are Pride's family and joy.....you are empty!

Ooh boy I just really need to get some wedding related drama off my shoulders
So I got married a few weeks ago, and the day was actually great! very few issues, at least thats what i thought. I’m still unsure of certain things that took place but overall the day was pretty good. My biggest mistake was giving my mother in law too much control. now i have a good relationship with her and having her help to plan was amazing (my parents were not at all involved because of religious differences, they refused to come). now the downside is both my MIL and myself are big planners and like things to be our way fully, control freaks if you will. this is where issues arise. now from the beginning she was very adament that we would do things my way and for the most part we did, there were things i just gave up on and didn’t want to fight over because it was too exhausting (like food choices for the reception, i wanted a pasta bar and we did not do that). One thing that was central to the wedding, and my personal baby, were the reception centerpieces. We made nerdy terrariums and I spent a full year collecting and planning for them. Each piece was a different fandom, doctor who, star wars, fruits basket, my hero, etc. we made 22 and had a few extras because we had a pretty large wedding. Anyway the real annoyance for me comes to the point that the transport of these terrariums to the venue was anything but gentle, most of the figurines got tossed around in the jars and no one cared to fix them so when guests saw the at their tables they were kind of a mess. (i was not allowed to help set up or transport and i regret not arguing harder for this, i put my trust in my in laws and it didn’t fully pay off unfortunately).
Now this isn’t that big a deal, a thing i can get over, but the way my husbands cousins treated these centerpieces i can not. Now all his cousins are grown adults, some with kids of their own. I don’t personally know any of the cousins on his dads side because they really don’t get together often and when they do they don’t really interact too much with each other. so i’ve not met or been introduced to a lot of them, so when i say i don’t know them i really really mean it. Now my fruits basket terrarium was my favorite, i spent a lot of time hand painting the 13 zodiac figurines and having them placed just how tohru lines them up on her altar. and fruits basket is my favorite anime, specifically with kyo being my favorite character. well the cousins were sitting at the fruits basket table, and also at the star wars tatooine table (a jar of sand with lukes house and a little lego luke figure, very cute) well 2 of the zodiac figures were thrown into the tatooine jar because one of the cousins child was playing in it like it was his own little sand box. now this kid isn’t 2 yet but the parents just let him throw sand all over the table and dig into the jar, at the center of a 6ft round table. that takes a little bit of dedication on the kids part to get there and the parents utter lack of caring to reign their child in and not destroy someone elses property and hard work. (this is why people have child free weddings, which i didn’t want because we have kids in our family we wanted to be able to come). Now this is one thing, because while 2 of the zodiac figures were not in their original terrarium i did get them back, kyo, my favorite was missing entirely, stolen, thrown somewhwere, left behind at the venue, it’s not clear what happened to him really all i know is i don’t have him and he was taken out of the terrarium, which he never should have been removed in the first place.
So obviously i’m very upset, i’m autistic and have a very very strong attachment to my things, these terrariums were important to me, i fully intend to keep them and gift them to close friends, the lack of disregard for my property, my hard work in putting them together makes me just incredibly mad. but since “they’re family” I’m not allowed to be mad, they get the benefit of the doubt “they wouldn’t do that”. but i don’t know these people, i don’t know what they’d do, all i know is they did destroy my terrariums, they let their child play in the tatooine jar, and kyo is missing as a direct result of this. it takes a lot of the joy of my terrariums away because i look at the fruits basket one and its just messed up, the tatooine one is also messed up, i just can’t bring myself to fix it because i’m just so mad i even have to fix it. It just really bothers me that guests at my wedding, guests i don’t personally know, behaved like this and just get away with it. none of the guests my husband and i personally invited and knew were not destructive at all, so i know it could have been done. I’ve never in my life gone to a wedding or large party and thought it was okay to touch, destroy, or rearrange decorations. I thought that was pretty common knowledge, don’t fuck with what’s not yours. My mother in law is trying to both sides the issue, acknowledging i’m upset but trying to make it seem like their behavior was okay. The one point that really pisses me off is that apparently centerpieces at weddings are often okay to just take home with you if you’re sitting at the table. Now i’ve never heard this, i’ve never done this, and no one has ever told me i was allowed to take a centerpiece home with me.
I’m just really upset about this still

R I N D O U
His lashes fluttered open when he heard a loud crash coming from the hallway, along with a string of cuss words sounding like his daughter's voice.
“What the hell was that?” You groaned, not a single word was uttered from your husband when he sprung out of bed, bolting to the bedroom down the corridor.
“Tohru?!” Rindou yelled, flinging open the door. Revealing your teenage daughter fully dressed, half way through her second story window. A facade of pillows under her blanket seeminging meant to be her ‘sleeping body’.
“Oh dad, I-”
“What the hell are you doing” The man was fuming by the ears, pajamas ruffled when he jolted out of his slumber.
“Is Tohru okay?” You peeked from behind the broad shouldered man.
“I was just going to get fresh air!” Your daughter lied, making up a somewhat excuse to appease her angered father.
“Hey Tohru! Hurry up and get down here!” You heard a boy's voice call out, looking over at Rindou’s face to see the man's darkened expression.
“Who the fuck is down there? Is that a boy?!” He growled, stomping his feet over to the glass. Pushing past his daughter to take a look.
“Oh shit- her dads here. Let’s book it!” The kids whispered, but loud enough for Rindou to make out, hastily running down the dark street.
“You little shits! Don't you dare come back here!” Rindou growled, slamming the window shut in the process.
“What! Dad!” Tohru whined,
“You're so grounded young lady!” Rindou shouted, not caring for the sleeping neighbors beside his shared condo at three in the morning.
“Rin, she was just having some fun!” You defended, you were also like her when you were her age, trouble makers run in your blood. Actually Rindou couldn't even talk- he was running roppongi at her age.
“No! She's just too young to be hanging out with boys!” Rindou’s brows joined together as he withered in front of you.
“But we dated when we were her age-” You deadpanned at him,
“Grounded! My final answer!”
R A N
Ran was coming home from a late night bonten meeting, mouth agape when he saw his daughter’s feet dangling out from her window.
Fearing the worst he sprinted to the ground below his child, hands outstretched to catch her if she were to misstep.
“Mitsuri!” His voice boomed,
“Eh? Dad?!” His daughter stuttered, slowly slid out the window, climbing down like she had done this many times prior to this awkward occurrence.
Toes easily touching the grass with ease, not a scratch upon the females porcelain skin.
“Ran?” You yawned, cracking the door ajar. It was late, you waking up to your husband's screams outside your house.
“Mitsuri, what are you doing climbing out your window like a maniac?!” Ran scowled, hands running through his messed up hair. Sweat dripping down his temple from the not so pleasant adrenaline rush.
“I was just gonna hang out with some friends..” your daughter answered, fingers gripping the edge of her shirt, scarily waiting for her dad’s reaction.
“At this time of night? .. out your window?”
“Ye-”
“Phone privileges. Give me it.” Ran demanded, palm stretched out.
“But-” no question she was a tad bit spoiled by her father. You being the bad cop, while your husband played the good cop for his beloved daughter.
“If you want to go anywhere all you got to do is ask!” Ran plucked the phone from his daughter's hand, a wave of relief washing over him. Secretly thanking whatever being watching over him that it wasn't some sort of gang related subject.
“This is what you get for spoiling her!” You laughed from the sidelines, hand clutching your stomach.
“This is your fault too ya know!” Ran argued.
“I’m the one who tries to discipline her! But someone always lets it go!” You emphasized the special somebody.
“Whatever” Ran sighed, This was a lesson for the usual carefree man, a special lesson he wouldn't forget in the many years to come with his unborn future children.
S A N Z U
It was Sanzu’s best day of his life when his daughters were born, the two only being about one year apart. They were spoiled to the core, anything they wanted their money liberl father blessed them with. He thought they were the sweetest things ever, them both being a daddy's girl after all.
He never would have expected to see both of his daughters outside his humble abode, standing beside two boys, most likely a double date.
He stared in shock, hands pressed firmly against the glass, teeth gritting.
“Huh? I tucked them into bed an hour ago” You rubbed your eyes, riding yourself of the sleepiness threatening to drown you. The pink haired only tutted his teeth, swifty twisting the door knob to confront the four children outside.
“Oh you better run” your oldest daughter whispered, gesturing for the boys to make haste from her deadly father.
“You better not come back here, unless you want trouble you fuckers!” Sanzu yelled, red in the eyes from anger. Not bothering to chase after the two scoundrels.
“Dad, mom! What are you guys doing awake?” Your youngest asked, sheer panic in her eyes, watching her insane fathers unpleasant smile.
“I swear you two will be the death of me” Sanzu uttered, shoving his hands into his pockets. A irked gleen in his orbs as he stared them down.
“They were just friends dad, stop overreacting” the older daughter said,
“I- You little shi-” He bit his lip to suppress his anger fueled words, knowing well it would definitely hurt his precious children's feelings. Having regretted it later if he were to say those sinful words.
“Now now Sanzu, let's head to bed” You wrapped your arms around your lover, dragging him inside the house.
“You can sort out their punishment tomorrow, after a good night's sleep” , coating him with reassuring words. That day he learned how misjudged he was of his children, even so he still loved them with all his heart.
I Z A N A
Izana had his feet kicked up, relaxing in his office while he watched the moon. He had a clear view, the street lamps positioned next to the sidewalk, the side of his beautiful house facing his office window. He was enjoying his free time, mind taking over his body while he thought about his life choices. He was in ease until he saw his son's window light up, a long string of rope being tossed out the opening.
Sitting up from his chair, he rushed over to his clear casement. Throwing his window open, a boy and girl standing beneath his son's window. The two holding the rope still as your child tried to slid down.
“My my Yuki, where are you off to?” Izana laughed, nerves finally relaxing when he figured out what was going on. Calmly settling into the frame, head leaning on his chin. It wasn't like he had the right to be upset, he did much worse when he was his son's age. Robbing, fighting, killing. You name it, Izana’s done it.
Sneaking out was nothing compared to what he did, but he wasn't gonna just let his son go. He was more wise now, he knew for a fact he didn't want his son to end up anything like him. Sure, he wanted the boy to have fun, but in a normal kid way.
“Dad! Um- I”
“You better get your arse back up that window before I drag you around with that rope” Izana smiled, Totally different from the sentence he was portraying. Not forgetting his manners, giving a nonchalant wave to the other two kids.
“Zana? Who are you talking to?” You asked, placing a cup of tea you had prepared for Izana on his desk.
“Oh no one doll” Izana answered, closing the window before walking over to you.
“Let's go to bed, yeah?” He proposed, trailing his hands around your shoulders, guiding you to the door.
“But the tea I made”
“Im tired~”
Overall the male wouldn't want to talk further about the situation, nor would he discuss it with you. Trivial matters held no place between you both, as long as the child did not dare do it again.
I N U I
Inui wiped the sweat dripping from his forehead, the AC wasnt working at the motor shop. Him, draken and yourself were sweating bullets, the hot material around you not helping. You had decided to help the pair around the shop, cleaning what you could. Or helping with cashing every customer out, it would've been an easy task if it wasn't blazing hot.
Leaving your daughter home alone, obviously thinking she’d stay and do her teenage things. You couldn't be more mistaken, astounded as you watched her fiddle around with a boy across the street at the ice cream parlor.
“Y/N please don't tell me that Kagura..” Inui’s jaw dropped, the wrench that was once in his clasp dropping to the ground. Startling the concentrating Draken that was crouched over a motorbike.
“What's wrong Inui? Y/N” Draken twisted his body around, raising a brow when you two just started muttering to each other like two creeps.
“Is that... a boy” Inui held his chin between his fingers, squinting to get a better view of his kid.
“You trying to catch flies with your mouth Inui? Close your yap” You whispered,
“Y/N! She's too young, I feel like I just held her in my arms not too long ago. She can't get married just yet!” Inui argued, he would've been on the verge of tears if he didn't have a reputation to uphold.
“What? The fuck are you on Inui? She's probably just with a friend!” You patted his back, reassuring the man.
“Boys and girls can be friends ya’know” you added.
Cueing the two children across the road from you, feeding scoops of ice cream to each other.
“I don't think friends do that..” Inui looked over at you, eyes widening when you swung the motor shop’s door open. Hands coming around your mouth to amplify your words,
“Kagura, is that your boyfriend?”
“WHAT?” Inui almost fainted, the ledge behind him holding his wobbly frame up right.
“I didn't know you guys would be here!” Your daughter jogged across the street, leaving the boy sitting by himself.
“And no! Just a friend” She answered your embarrassing, blushing as she stared down at the ground.,
“I sense some lies” you wiggled playfully at the flustered girl.
“What! Anyways, Sorry I left the house without telling you” Kagura apologized,
“Just don't do it again, without my permission..” Inui stated,
“Especially not with a boy.”
K O K O N O I
Bribing people is his forte, and if they did not obliged? Threatening always did the trick.
And that's exactly what he did when he saw his descendant out with a male. All was dandy until the boy came running back, babbling about how his girl was the so called ‘love of his life’.
“Hey brat, you got a death wish?” Kokonoi asked, leaning against the door frame.
“Koko go easy on him, he’s just a kid” You nudged the man, a mischievous grin plastered on the males face.
“And I kinda think it's cute” You said, a small smile erupting from your daughter that was not so far behind her parents.
“I approve, kid! I like your romantic drive!” You clapped,
“Y/N!” Kokonoi pouted,
“You better not try to bribe him with money again” You threatened, waving a finger at the whiny man.
“Yeah! I like him too, dad!” Your daughter agreed.
“You're like twelve, go play chess or something” Kokonoi barked, crossing his arms in disapproval.
“Dad, I'm sixteen!”
“That's what I said”
S O U Y A
He almost had a panic attack at the sight, having to shield the man from the scene playing out. Your twin daughter saying their goodbyes to their dates, followed by a kiss. You removed your hand when the boys were no longer in view, riding off in their motorcycles.
“Shira, Nihra” You held Souya up by the shoulder, the light headed male limping towards the worried kids.
“What's wrong with dad?” Nihra questioned, eyeing her ghostly pale father.
“He's out of it” You giggled,
“I'm not crazy am i?” He stood tall, letting go of the arm you had draped around him.
“There was boys-” His voice cracked.
“You saw that dad?” Shira sweat dropped, watching as her fathers should leave his body.
“Next time ask before you go out” You smiled, you weren't too strict on the two. They were Souya’s children, earning most of their adorable traits from him. Even his fighting skills.
“This better not happen again, i'm trusting you” Souya grumbled.
“Sorry pops” The two girls remorsefully sollied the man, both hooking onto one of Souya’s arms as they helped his shell into the house.
N A H O Y A
Nahoya was beyond pissed, infamous smile widening. Taking fast steps towards your daughter and her significant other.
“Look boy, I don't know who you are. But my daughters not up for grabs” Nahoya grinned, cracking his fingers.
“O-okay sir” the boy was jittering, body trembling from the males intense arua.
“If I catch ya here again” he used his finger to slash his neck, motioning to the death that would happily greet the boy if they were to ever meet again.
“Yer dead meat kiddo”  Nahoya laughed, watching as the boy ran for his life.
“Dad, that was really extra!” Your daughter sneered, a pout on her lips.
“Shut up!, you're grounded rat!” Nahoya shouted.
“Yeah Nahoya, there was no need to threaten the poor kid. He looked like he was gonna piss himself.”
“Exactly the effect i wanted”

Warnings: flufff
Tumblr media
Lucifer:
-He’s very protective over his brothers so he sees where they would come from.
-And he honestly respects their devotion to keeping you safe.
-Meanwhile they don’t think he’s all to bad himself, since he’s well put together.
Mammon:
-Scared of them. That’s it.
-They barely let you around him because of his gambling and scamming tendencies.
-He just wants time alone with you but knows that with the way he can act, that might not happen-
-He does however thinks it’s nice in a way, to not have to always be there to protect you and can leave it to them.
Leviathan:
-Another one that’s sorta spooked by them.
-He gets so nervous bc he doesn’t wanna mess up his chance with you.
-I feel like they wouldn’t have to worry all too much because of that fact.
Satan:
-They would probably think that he can give good hw answers-
-But anyways, he thinks they are good people for keeping your safety in mind.
-Ngl if they like reading, they’ve got the perfect person to recommend certain ones.
Asmo:
-Literally lust incarnate.
-They keep their eyes on him the most.
-They barely let you talk to him without them around.
-He thinks they’re no fun, but thinks it’s sweet what they do for you.
Beel:
-Is the protective friend to you.
-All of you get along though they were alarmed bc of his stature and muscles.
-They def love the fact he knows so many good places to eat.
Belphie:
-They keep their eyes out for him too.
-After the whole incident in the attic, they never leave your side when you go near him.
-He understands it, but thinks they’re sorta annoying?
-He just wants you alone in a good way this time-
Diavolo:
-He’s very much nice to you, so why worry?
-They kind of think of him like a golden retriever.
-Why would he ever hurt you?
-He sees them as kind hearted.
Barbatos:
-Doesn’t mind them, and they wouldn’t mind him.
-it’s sort of like a mutual understanding.
They do like him because he makes good food tho 👀
Solomon:
-Shady sorcerer, need I say more?
-There’s no way in hell (pun intended) that they would let you experiment with this man.
-He thinks that they aren’t too bad.
Simeon:
-He’s happy you have such good friends that will protect you.
-There’s nothing to worry about with this man so your friends probably won’t say anything bad about him.
-He’s so pure 😭 so why even think of bad things when you’re with him.

Furuba The Final - Episode 3 - Thought Post - SPOILERS!
Okay, so not only did I take a nice, long hot shower, I also watched the dub and my feelings on this episode have changed. I really think that the dub script helped me appreciate this episode more. The sub script wasn’t able to really capture the humorous moments and some of the translations were a little stilted and disconnected, so it messed with the flow of the episode. That combined with the fact that during my second time through I was more prepared and aware of how the events were going to unfold, so I could feel the connections better. Watching dub allows for me to focus more on the visual imagery as well, which really helps with this episode too.
Tumblr media
First, let's talk about the Ayame x Mine, Hatori x Mayu, and Yuki x Machi scene. In one of the omake (which is likely never going to get adapted) the women in Ayame's shop talk about how Ayame always helps Mine into her shoes when she goes out. The women find it weird, but Yuki thinks about how he would probably do that too. In the moment with Ayame and Mine, we see how Mine already knows about the secret and how, even though her and Ayame are very equal in how they work together, is still in a sub-servient role to Ayame in strictly workplace kinda way (he is her boss). With Yuki we see something similar, Machi is the secretary to Yuki's president status within the Student Council and he is thinking about how he wants her to know about the Curse. He wants her to be on level footing with him when it comes to that.
So with Yuki and Machi and Ayame and Mine, we see the two brothers approaching the person they care about (or are coming to care about) in a similar way. Their relationships are also highlighting the idea of letting people in. Ayame and Mine's scene, especially, talks about happiness. Mine wants to stay with Ayame because he makes her happy and that's all there is to it. These two ship moments then contrast with Akito's scene of staying held up in her room and her statements of Shigure being cold hearted.
Tumblr media
With Hatori we have a contrast with him and Ayame. Ayame connected with Mine, a total outsider just like Machi. Both Machi and Mine are completely disconnected from anything Sohma related. However, Hatori, like both Shigure, Kyo, and Momiji, is connecting with someone who *is* connected to all of the Sohma drama and messiness. Shigure, of course, to Akito who is also cursed and at the center of the Sohma family, and Kyo and Momiji to Tohru who is an outsider like Mayuko, and also entangled with the Sohma's in some way (Mayu through dating Shigure and Kana, Tohru through, well, this entire series lol). Hatori and Mayu's scene involves talking about travel, taking a trip, which ties into Momiji's plotline of setting out on a new journey.
We also see a parallel in Ayame's, Hatori's, and Shigure's movements with that of Yuki's, Kyo's, and Momiji's. Ayame and Yuki have both either told or want to tell the people precious to them about the Curse (aka, they reach out to them), Hatori and Kyo are both staying silent and not really allowing themselves to further their bonds (we see this in the scene between Kyo and Momiji on the rooftop, while with Hatori we see him saying no to going on a trip), and both Momiji and Shigure want to move forward and both in connection with Akito. Shigure wants Akito to join him, while Momiji wants to leave Akito behind.
Tumblr media
Now, how Hiro and Kisa fit in is the freedom of their relationship, I feel. A lot of people see Hiro and Kisa as kinda mini Kyo and Tohru in their character personalities and general overall relationship dynamics. But Hiro and Kisa have a certain level of freedom that Kyo and Tohru just don't. And we can see that in this episode when we Hiro and Kisa are just there at Shigure's place. Even Haru and Rin don't necessarily have that same level of freedom, because Rin is still recovering. But this theme of freedom then, of course, connects to Momiji and his Curse breaking.
Tumblr media
Everything about those moments and scenes were excellent. Great voice acting for both the sub and dub and I'm always so, so proud of Momiji. It's awful and painful to think about, but Momiji has lived with loneliness. Momiji had a bond that is often viewed in society as unbreakable (that between a mother and her child) break on him, and he survived it. He was able to live and grow, so I think a part of Momiji knows that he can do that again after his Curse broke. Akito wasn't able to move beyond the breaking of a bond with a parent like Momiji was, and lost to the loneliness, which is why we see her lashing out here - as Momiji even notes.
Now, another element that we see running through this episode are parent-child bonds. This is an overall theme for Fruits Basket in general, of course, but this episode has a lot of actual talk and discussion about that:
Shigure talking about his bond with his parents (or his apathy towards having one to begin with)
Shigure talking about not wanting to be a father figure for Akito like both Hatori and Kureno kinda are.
Momiji with his mother at the end of the episode.
Akito's dream about what her father, Akira, told her when she was younger.
The symbolism and imagery of Momiji and Akito when they talk about the Curse breaking.
Tumblr media
In the scene at night, they have Momiji looking down at Akito from above and she looks at him through her her fingers - this gives the imagery of a parent/adult and a child. The way Momiji talks to Akito the next day also gives off this parent/adult and child energy. Momiji, like Haru, has now seen Akito clearly.
So now we have these threads of parent-child bonds, zodiac members either stagnating or trying to move forward, the idea of freedom, and the mention of Rin and her recovery. All of these thread lines will flow well into next week's episode.
Some other additional thoughts I have about this episode:
I always really love the scene of Kisa saying hello to Kyo (the dub script handled this really well - greetings don’t hold the same level of significance as they do in Japanese culture - students properly greeting their fellow classmates and teachers is like drilled into them in junior high school especially). Since they are both cats, there is that element to the interaction, but it is also nice to see Kisa just speaking up when she wants to and seeing the kindness of Kyo. Her talk with Hiro after also shows how even the young kids are picking up on Kyo's feelings for Tohru.
Tohru's face here. It was so beautiful and sad at the same time.
Tumblr media
Also, Laura Bailey's delivery of "Kyo" in that hallway scene was so precious! T0T
Shigure's statement about the Curse. Him feeling so unaffected by the Curse is one of the reasons why I wish he hadn't ended up with Akito, because for him that isn't really moving forward. It's just staying the same. I could probably talk more about that, but it would go off into another tangent and this post is long enough already as it is! Though, one last thought, I do wonder if the dub will have Momiji drop the accent from now on, also that scene with Momiji and his mom gets me every time! TT0TT

Fruits Basket Manga Review , ch 112 & 113 (part 2)
I hate that this chapter is cut... mainly cuz it deals with the most “ horribly presented” theme in furuba anime.... grief.
-The shame of grieving: “ Rarely discussed theme in Literature”:
When a love one dies... ppl differ in how they deal with it. Some cry their hearts out, some become depressed & painfully lonely, others get angry or cynical, some might deny it, some move on quickly, others move on but years after the realization crushes them, others stay still... Above all, you feel ashamed of yourself if you didn’t move on or if you DID move on.. “ Sometimes ppl around you judge you for it... for your grief”
The later is the theme of these two chapters. Rarely discussed themes & it saddens me that it is cut. You see, Furuba anime doesn’t get grief  at all. To them, it’s a small part of the generic protagonist after she finishes her job of nurturing the real main protagonist. Mothers are strong, they help us cross the bridge between childhood & adulthood. Tohru, the show’s mom, did it so thoroughly & in slow visual & narrative details for yuki. Afterwards, the anime brushed whatever is left of her character, which the anime viewed as sheer suspenseful drama, & collected it thro 3rd person story-telling techniques in one ep “ se3, ep6″ & excessive monologue for 10 minutes in se3, ep9.
In this chapter, Kakeru, a side character, sheds light into this theme. Kakeru didn’t lose a parent by death, didn’t grieve, has no dependent familial bonds with either dead parents “ kyoko & komaki’s dad”. Yet, kakeru stood & judged tohru on how she “ should” grieve. Harshly tearing her down while she’s standing there lonely, trying to hide her shock at the loss of her only pillar in life, broken & traumatized, dealing with the pushed down traumatic feelings from her past where her mom abandoned her as a child..now her mom did it again, this time thro death.. & kakeru, rightfully not knowing all that, but wrongfully lecturing her on how to behave... kakeru isn’t a monster, but he only saw what he wanted: komaki & how the world should grieve with his lover, how he should be the hero protecting her. So self-centered, insensitive, horribly cruel & unbelievably conceited, but above all... what he did is so sadly common... it hurts.
-Judging Grieving People:
As I said many times.. grief is so personal, so unique to the person & as common as it is, so misunderstood. According to kakeru & many ppl I’ve sopken to lately, tohru should have acknowledged komaki. Komaki, the not-traumatized version of tohru, did the right “ tohru-like” thing. Not only felt sadness at the loss of her own dad, but found it in her heart to visit the other orphan, tohru, & give condolences & respect to the dead mother. Such kindness & purity. Very deserving of applaud: To not only see your pain but others’ as well. Tohru has always done the “ right, kind” thing to other ppl. When she can’t now, the author brought another “ tohru” to do the “ right, kind” thing.
Tumblr media
Kakeru is so many ppl. During my brother’s funeral. I’ve heard so many gossip on how my mom should’ve stood tall & greeted the visitors.” Being silent , emotionless & non-responsive is not how you show visitors you value their kind words”, they said. How his widow should’ve collected herself & acted properly, respected his memory by taking proper care of herself & her kids. “Being a broken mess is not how you “ honor” loved one”, they said. Kakeru is indeed many ppl & that’s how you discuss a theme by creating characters who sin, screw up & be cruel, even if momentarily.
Kakeru is wrong. There is no “ you should have” in grief. There is no ounce of truth in his demeaning lecture to tohru & I respect komaki for her reaction to him so much. Kakeru did learn & grew from it, apologized to tohru even if he didn’t actually sought her to do so & even if she herself started the apology. But you see, these two chapters are 90% focused on kakeru as a character, his growth, thoughts, the mini focus on his relationship with komaki as an example of healthy relationship & all that is another lesson for yuki to observe & learn. He learned abt tohru’s past, kakeru’s personality & growth & got to observe another example of romantic relationship so yuki can grow as a man & approach machi healthily. But then again... nothing at all stops yuki/machi from being healthy, no past issues, no contradicting personalities “ they’re quite similar” & yuki is the only furuba character that doesn’t screw up big. He learns & teaches. He’s the personification of the author.
-Tohru.. stays a “ tohru”:
Tohru’s part is 10% of the this chapter which is fine as I think/hope it will lead into more tohru depth in the following chapters. But It is for this reason I’m glad this chapter was cut in the 13 eps season of furuba anime, cuz tohru doesnt have much depth in the anime due to the quick wrap up & the la~~~~st  thing I want is another 3rd person story-telling flashback abt tohru in the anime. Honestly, one of the most frustrating aspect to me of the anime & I’ll hold judgement abt manga- tohru till I reach its end. So far~~~ Tohru’s depth & character exploration gets better one chapter, then regress the next one, then moves on, the... it’s a fluctuating process. It has nothing to do with tohtu’s feelings.
you’ see ... kyo himself as a character with issues fluctuates a lot, he does sth good, then does sth bad, chooses right words, then makes a horrible mistake & chooses wrong! which is one of the most well-done aspects of character exploration that is rarely attempted by authors! I highly respect Takaya-san for what she’s doing with kyo in the manga so far. Other authors show us a character doing one big mistake & then he/she learns from it in a dramatic way. But Takaya-san, nope! she decided to approach it in a very human way, making us be frustrated with kyo’s repeated mistakes yet understands where he’s coming from! kudos to her!!
But I’m not yet satisfied with how tohru is portrayed in the manga & this has nothing to do with tohru’s character. Takaya-san is discussing rare themes thro tohru’s character. But what I mean is how tohru is approached thro the viewers/readers eyes. I wont judge until the last chapter. but this is the part that is frustrating to me.
Side Notes:
The flow of the 2 chapters is little off. We go back & forth between the past & the present, between yuki-machi & komaki-kakeru. Again, I’m so glad the anime cut it cuz, nope! they can’t handle such narrative. they’ll reorder it in a such heavily monologing way & insert the comedy abruptly to lighten the mood. Just look at how the comedy is inserted in momiji’s se03 ep!
Komaki is such a tohru with a sprinkle of kagura’s very softened outbursts. lol. she’s fun!
I’m liking yuki-machi interactions a lot. no drama, which is why the anime cut it -_-’, but it progresses healthily. Machi is yuki’s third-stage growth after (1) leaving tohru’s nest (baby yuki), (b) making friends with kakeru/someone who gets him (young boy yuki), (3) finding romantic love (being a man). The anime was so interested in the 2 stages above cuz that’s where the drama is & cut the third. Honestly, the anime didn’t have to include everything as there is never a space in 13 eps, but they certainly could’ve squeezed few panels or even made brand new very short yuki-machi scenes. but the anime weirdly decided after yuki “ saved” machi from her trauma by talking with her in her apartment, he should just marry her.... lol.. that’s why next scene is ep 5 momiji’s ep intro montage where yuki was abt to confess!!! making yuki-machi the least developed couple in the anime!
I love all furuba’s characters, but yuki, tohru, kyo & akito carry the big themes, therefore, I not only analyze their characters, but how the themes are presented thro them & how their presentation affects such themes. This might make it sound as I hate them or am harsh on them. not at all. It is the anime director/ manga author that I’m positively or negatively criticizing most times. Most importantly, my criticism is not the law. It’s just my perspective & my consumption of the material. Feel free to differ with me. I dont mind it. It brings interesting discussions!
When it comes to tohru’s issues... his chapter introduced nothing new. We have seen/read in canon repeatedly that tohru hides her pain behind a smile (heck! even kisa knows that & told us), that she cant stand up for herself much, that she smiles for other ppl not for herself. All this was presented thro so many characters already, which is why I understand the anime’s decision to cut it. What’s new? that yuki didn know tohru’s smile is mostly a mask & that kakleru has depth.
I love this chapter for the grieving themes it discussed that are rarely touched upon in literature, but since such themes are rarely presented, the anime’s decision to cut it, ironically proves my point! lol . They don’t get grief & so, they reduced it to se03 content & two eps worth. sad.. but expected. The anime is indeed another form of “past” kakeru: seeing one side of grieving person. The happy side.

fafnir from miss kobayashi's dragon maid
whoever sent this ask i love you Sexuality Headcanon: Gay Gender Headcanon: Dragon's have a different concept of gender than humans do. In Fafnir's case, he uses masculine terms and pronouns, however he's pretty gnc and doesn't abide by the typical binary. he finds it foolish and unnecessary A ship I have with said character: FAFIYA. I could go on and on about these two. Fafnir learning to tolerate and even appreciate humans because he was shown kindness and hospitality by a practical stranger. Fafnir learning to have fun and enjoy casual interests with Takiya. Takiya Taking Fafnir into his home with zero hesitation. AND THEY WERE ROOM MATES A BROTP I have with said character: Fafnir came to our world just to check up on Tohru. He pretends he doesn't care but he always shows up when Tohru invites him to things. He is the first one Tohru goes to for advice. These two have a severely underrated and very close bond A NOTP I have with said character: don't really have one but i don't like seeing him paired romantically with women A random headcanon: He and Takiya of course go to many conventions, and one year Fafnir decides that since his curse books aren't selling, he should come up with something else. He begins writing his own manga about magical girls. He also playtests all of Takiya's games, and takes part in gaming competitions. He's got an unbreakable winning streak. He realized that his treasure hoard is unsafe and unprotected back in the other world, so he rented a storage unit for all his gold and trinkets. General Opinion over said character: Fafnir is such a unique and criminally underrated character. He's a goth dragon capable of destroying the world, and he spends his time playing online video games, cant handle spicy food, orders apple juice on a train ride, and wears a hanten over a whole tuxedo. I love him

Can I request Manabe going over to Shigures house to take care of his sick s/o
You certainly can, whether I will follow it or not is another matter entirely ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
Fandom: Fruits Basket
Character: Kakeru Manabe
Prompt: Sick s/o
Word count: -1K
Tumblr media
It all had started that morning, with your absence and the revelation that the reason for your absence was a fever. A fever that would have been rather mild for any other person, but which a Sohma had to take extra seriously. After all, their curse was of the fickle type that a fever could trigger all the easier.
“This is where Yuki lives, huh?”
The exclamation came so casually from the student council member as he stepped into the traditionally styled house. So casually even the inhabitants of the house forgot the purpose of Kakeru’s visit. The fact that he had begged and bowed at Yuki’s feet even to allow him to come over entirely forgotten in a memory of second-hand-embarrassment.
“Y-yeah, [Name]’s room is just over this way!” Tohru was quick to speak up, sensing the annoyance radiating from Yuki, who had been shouldering the majority of the burden that was Kakeru’s frenzy. Leaving her shoes by the door she quickly pointed into the direction where your room was supposed to be, only to find that Kakeru hadn’t followed, rather admiring the house a bit more.
“So, you all live here?” He continues to question and Yuki heaves another sigh, knowing that this conversation was to come as soon as Kakeru had pulled up the address list of the household. A horrid infringement on the privacy of their students and especially his own, but Kakeru had grown near desperate by then, as he recalled you telling him that you lived away from your family. A truth, but also not entirely, for Shigure was also family.
“Just hurry it up and see [Name] already,” the student council president tells Kakeru with a short note, already slumped down at the table but finding himself unable to relax. “I doubt [Name] would be any more happy to hear about your sudden visit,” the male informs the brunet who freezes up at the realisation.
It was rather known that the Sohma liked their privacy after all. For good reason, but none that Kakeru was informed on. He just respected the distance maintained, not wanting to overstep his boundaries. Not unless necessary.
“Ah, I’m sorta jealous that you guys all live together like this. Machi and I definitely don’t have it that good!” the male exclaims instead, and for a split second there is a look of sorrow on his usually jovial face, remembering how complicated family can be and how harmful they can be.
And though the Sohma household feels warm and Tohru’s happy chitter gives it a homely quality Kakeru isn’t a stranger to the reservation in the shoulders of those who did carry ‘Sohma’ as their name. The lack of answer he receives on the last remark was another sign as Kakeru heaves a sigh, finally squaring himself to face himself in your room.
“[Name]?” he calls through the door after a knock, and the lack of response at first has him believing that you are asleep. But before he can decide to retreat there is a click of the door as it is pushed open by a peek.
Keeping yourself well out of sight Kakeru is happy enough to see a sign of life as he beams into the darkness coming from your room. “How are you feeling?” he asks of you, “I hear you were ill and came to check up on you!” he continued, unbothered by the fact that he couldn’t see you. He could understand that, no one liked to be seen when ill and Kakeru knew he had already pushed himself past several boundaries.
“Do you want some porridge?” The male continues as he pulls out a canned soup from his bag, still lukewarm from the time he pulled it from the vending machines. It wasn’t much, incomparable even to Tohru’s cooking most likely, but it was the best thing Kakeru could get his hands on within such a short notice.
The silence that follows from your room has his smile fade a bit, his confidence plummeting down as Kakeru is expecting an admonishment for his behaviour. After all, he had crossed several lines to find out where you lived on top of forcing Yuki to bring him. It was a silence that was growing more dreadful the longer it persisted as Kakeru started to formulate an apology.
“Idiot, what are you doing here?” you sigh instead, fatigue clear in your voice as he can hear you shuffle in the darkness, “I’m in no condition to see anyone and you’re tiresome,” you continue.
Never before has Kakeru felt this relieved on being insulted, his smile turning even wider and brighter as he promptly sits himself down on the floor in front of your door. “That’s fine!” he says, “I have energy for two,” he continues, earning a chuckle from your side as you carefully reach out for the canned soup left in front of the door.

Hi I'm a lesbian and I need reassurance that if I came out to beel or asmo or really anyone, that they'd love and support me :(
You’re valid and beautiful and amazing regardless of what anyone else says or thinks. Anyone who doesn’t love or support you for who you are and who you love can f*ck right off. They don’t deserve YOU. not the other way around!! With that being said...
Fem!MC is a Lesbian!
Tumblr media
Lucifer
I mean... that’s great. Doesn’t really know why you’re telling him this; he shouldn’t be concerned with who you shack up with. Except- uh... there aren’t really a lot of females in this house, are there?
Starts to be a bit more mindful of you. Being in a house of men, his first thought is you aren’t quite happy with that. He stops that pretty quickly, realizing that if you were so comfortable stating your sexuality in the first place, you’d also tell him you hate living there with him and his brothers.
Still... he doesn’t really associate with many demons at all. Male or female or otherwise. He’d be the type to heavily judge any woman you may bring back to the HoL. Did you know that MC does this? Did you know she likes her pancakes like that?
If they don’t pass his test of approval he’s quick to tell you that. He probably says it in front of the failed specimen as well. He’s far from unsupportive- in fact he probably cares a bit too much. Like a dad offering to help you find the perfect match- he just needs to step back and let you handle this yourself.
Mammon
Aw fuck yeah. Girls, he likes girls too.
He kind of.... well it’s not that he doesn’t care? He just sort of takes that information and rolls with it. Like yeah you like girls too? Yeah? I know some models you might like.
Aside from that, he does try to play wingman if and when you do bring another girl around him. Provided Lucifer even lets you out of his sight long enough to meet one.
He’s the chillest person ever about it. I mean, who the hell is he to tell you anything at all about anything regarding yourself? Ya’ like girls? You think girls are fuckin’ pretty? He agrees. Just hopes you aren’t uncomfortable living in the HoL because well... duh. No chicks here.
Leviathan
Oh- lesbian?
Have you guys ever seen how pretty girls are because holy shit fuck gosh fuck fuck jeez damn it shit fuck dang oh dangit please help me
Yes he memorized that stupid meme by heart. He’s pretty... awkward about it, in all seriousness. Doesn’t know what to do with this new information but uh... you did tell him first, right? Right???
Either way, now he’s excited to tell you about all the cute lesbian characters he’s found through manga and anime. Did you know that Ymir from AOT/SNK is a lesbian? Isn’t she cool? Oh- what about Tohru from that dragon maid anime!? We should watch those together- if- if you’re not grossed out by a yucky otaku like me that is...!!
Satan
Why are you telling him this? What brought this on?
Did you really think he’d be the type to like... judge? Were you expecting him to throw a fit because you’re a woman who... likes women? Uhm???
Oh, no you just wanted to trust him with that information because you hadn’t come out yet? Well your secret is safe with him. Not that it really does much for anyone, right? Regardless, he’s in your corner for any and all situations needed. Have to come up with a lie to fool Lucifer so you can go hang out with some pretty demon girl? He’s got your back.
If it’s for validation, well... refer to point 2. If he were to ever think less of you for who you are, then shame on him. But honestly? He’s glad you’re comfortable enough to tell him this. Deep down, it truly means a lot to him. Even if he doesn’t always act like it.
Asmodeus
Girls :)
You and he are in the same boat, darling... if it’s validation you seek, you’ve come to the right person!
No more are the naked cuddles or talk of sexual things with you. Unless you still want to do that? He has no qualms with stopping, though. Whatever makes you comfortable, darling!!!!
You always seemed a lot more interested in girls when you two talked about dating or sexual liaisons before, baby. That’s alright, let’s just keep it casual, baby! <3
Beelzebub
Oh cool. You like girls? Well that’s okay :) He still thinks you’re pretty great. I mean, who is he to think any different of you? You’ll still hang out with him right? You’ll still go to the gym, and do favors for him right? And eating! Don’t forget the eating!!
There aren’t a lot of things he should really be careful of, on the surface anyway. He doesn’t really play hangman with you either. Or is it wingman? Oh, now he wants some wings...
Anyway!! Ahem. You’re his best buddy and he would happily support you. Need help coming out to someone else? He’s there for emotional support. He’ll hold your hand and walk you through everything as best as he can. Admittedly not always the best with it, but it’s the thought that counts.
And if someone ever dares give you grief for your sexuality...? Hungry boy becomes angry boy real quick. He’s not much for talking in this department. Would probably beat the dogshit out of anyone who talks badly about you. Protects you first, then goes out with you for snacks to cheer you up. Looooots of hugs and other platonic acts of affection. If you’re comfortable with it anyways. He just wants you to be as happy and comfortable as the rest of his brothers are around you.
Belphegor
Another guy who sort of doesn’t understand why you’re telling him. But at the same time he fully gets it, too. Like, it’s so hard coming out to other people about this, right? It must be.
Your secret (if it is one) is safe with him. He doesn’t go telling your business to the world because... duh. It’s a fuckin’ secret, yeah?
If and when you do tell someone else, he’s the one there. Silently judging them. If anything goes wrong he handles it accordingly. Probably violently if he’s in the right mood for it.
The best remedy for any and all pain is a good ass nap. So he’s taking you back home to his room, or the attic, and you’re both curling up under 4 thick blankets, and you’re taking a nice nap after a good cry. He’s got your back through thick and thin, and he refuses to let anyone give you shit on it. Will literally fight god x2 just so you can have peace of mind.

!!! omg yes yes i’d love for you to write more about that!!!! and! the first post from you i saw about kousuke and how he subverts the trope of the ml??? it was SO GOOD!! and you got another ask that mentioned how people saw yeonggi as the happy go lucky character! it reminded me of this ask which is very long i sent to @somebody-909 😭 i was just gushingggg about secondary male leads bc i for some reason always end up rooting for them and how yeonggi has the vibes even though he’s a main character 😩 and also we talked about other characters like kyo but i forgot that tohru also had dealt with abuse from her own family so in the end it’s like. it’s a story about two survivors finding happiness etc etc 😔🥺 idk idk all of you guys who make analysis are so cool
I hope you don't mind me answering these two asks separately, because I just know if I didn't I would miss too many things, haha!
I'm not sure if I could write a very good analysis of Yeonggi subverting the secondlead trope, but I sure could try! I feel like it's a little more biased because I DO ship Stalkyoo, but I think I can try to work with it! I also remember seeing that ask (I was going through their blog the other day) and I really enjoyed it! Like you, I tend to favor secondary leads, which I think is also because I have a tendency to love the act of yearning and pining lmao and man second leads sure do pine a lot, right? Also because second leads often (though mercifully not always) have a tendency to hesitate and miss their timing or just plain don't act on their feelings, and it creates a big sense of what could have been, and I think when you are someone who favors underdogs, you really fall into that "what could have been" thing, right?
(I think there's also a conversation to be had about first vs second leads and traits of masculinity, but I am admittedly not well-versed enough to do this, but some general food for thought is: often in the case where I favored a first to a second lead, it's because the first lead evoked a lot of traits of masculinity that I don't care for? Jealousy, possessiveness, being cold and not showing their emotions esp compared to a second lead who was often portrayed as gentle with his heart on his sleeve, kind. In a lot of these cases, the second lead is often not favored by the majority of the audience because "he just feels like a friend" aka he lacks the masculine traits people think a man should have~ or blah blah blah. I wonder if this is still a prevalent thing these days? I tend to avoid love triangles so I'm not sure, but, it's something I would like to throw in if I talk about Nol subervting the second lead trope aaahhhhh now I'm just on a whole other tangent lmao)
Here's an embarrassing admission: in the past, when I was young, back in like, 2007 in my first year of college and I started reading Fruits Basket and I watched the original anime lmaooooo I actually really favored Yukki, because I'm a gross sucker for gentle prince types lmaoooo but as I've gotten older, being able to understand what made Kyo and Tohru work so well was really satisfying!
I've become really enamored with the idea of Nol and Shinae as mirrors to each other, able to help each other identify and work on the parts of them where they are weaker or struggle, and the idea of these two people coming from uneasy lives and finding comfort in the sanctuary they create together? WHOLESOME. I live for that shit. (I don't ever want it to read though like I want Shinae to "fix" Nol or anything like that - he has a lot of work to put himself, just like she has for herself, but I like the idea that as they become people who heal themselves, they help each other heal, too, in the ways that they reflect each other, if that makes sense?) Survivors creating their own sense of home, out of the mess that they've endured is.... AAHHHHHH satisfying! There's something so strong about survival, let alone finding comfort in the wreckage of all that tried to destroy you, isn't it? Shinae has been dealt a bad hand in life, lacked opportunities others had, was judged mercilessly without anyone getting to know her; the idea of her becoming a person who can face the world without feeling like she's ill-fit, without feeling like she's out of place, because she's finally learned her value? Hhhhhh I love it! And likewise, Nol being able to face his awful family knowing that he is more than they ever saw in him, that he was never the villain he was made to believe? PLS my heart!!!!!!!!
(You know, my first time I read ILY, before I realized it was deeper than the surface and than I gave it credit for, I was also convinced Nol was a second lead interest, simply based on the fact that so often characters like Kousuke are coded the first lead and that characters like Nol are there to make us sad lmao. I think that's what made writing the Kousuke analysis so easy for me! At one point I decided to a read where I did not view anything through a romantic lens - not even things like the hospital balcony scene or the wac hand holding - to try to judge just what else could be going on under the surface, that's when I started to realize that a lot of scenes are kind of kind of a couple things superimposed over each other. Kousuke and Nol look like they're competing for Shinae's favor when they each remove their jackets, but what does it REALLY mean. Ironically enough, reading without a romantic lens made me favor Nol and Stalkyoo EVEN MORE lmao because I was finally able to pay attention to the nuanced depth and character development, and the way their relationship progressed as she came to trust him and their friendship solidified really made the framework feel obvious. But the point is: like you I tend to favor second leads and I was already favoring Nol on the principle that he's so sad and I just wanted to see it all turn around for him for once lmaooooo)

A support message from... Yuki Sohma
Note: I have this new idea for a mini series I want to do. It’s a support letter/supporting message from XXX character. Just simple and sweet and encouraging messages, because I’m hoping that thinking of what these characters might say, even if it’s a little to very out of character, will hopefully train my brain to be a little nicer and to relax too. They won’t be romantically motivated, just friend motivated. These will change and evolve. They’ll definitely be clunky at first (or always idk). These are pretty self-serving... but maybe they can find their way to help one other person too? And if not, that’s alright. :) Anyways, on with the post.
A support message from Yuki Sohma.
Yuki brings an extra pair of gardening gloves, a bucket, and various gardening tools. If he can manage to carry them, he would also bring two cups of tea. Yuki, known for NOT cooking or even boiling water, actually reads the directions on the box for what temperature and for how long the tea should steep for.
At first he plans on just making a pot of green tea, but then he worries that you wouldn’t like green, so he makes one mint and one green, and decides to let you pick.
Yuki would throw the gardening tools into a bag on his back, and carefully carry the steaming cups over to wherever he convinced you to meet him.
“Hey. I have tea. If you want any. Tohru always makes tea whenever someone is stressed. Well, actually, she’s always makes tea, but, uh... I have a cup of mint and a cup of green. Please take whichever one you like.”
You take a cup, shoulders curling in on the cup. Yuki watches your movements, seeing the weariness in your eyes.
“Are you busy? Can we take a walk?”
You nod.
The walk is fairly silent. You both try to make awkward small talk, but neither one of you are fully committed to making a conversation work. So, the silence resumes.
Eventually you begin to feel a sense of recognition, and sure enough, you end up at Yuki’s garden.
“So... uh...” Yuki shakes his head, a look of annoyance on his face. He sighs. “Look, I’m not Tohru. I can tell something is wrong. You’ve been quieter lately, your smile seems more strained, and you’ve been making even more self deprecating jokes than I do, and honestly, I’m worried that you don’t mean them as jokes, even though you fake laugh. If Tohru were here, she would have the most amazing story or quote or the perfect words of encouragement, but... you’re with me. Here.” He sets his now empty cup on the ground, swings his bag around, and pulls out the gardening tools. He hands you a hand rake and a pair of gloves.
“I could really use some help in the garden. Of course, you don’t have to help. And I know that not even is cheered up or encouraged the same way, but... when I’m feeling overwhelmed, I like to come here and just... work. I look at the garden and see everything that needs to get done. I see the vegetables that need harvesting, all the weeds that have overtaken an area, trash that has collected, and the overall messiness that happens. Sometimes I get lost in all that needs to be done, and I just stare for a little while. Finally though, I take one step and then another, and I begin to work. I find the first little patch of earth in front of me, and I begin to weed. Once I start, it’s generally easier to continue going. I work and work, until slowly but surely, my other problems start to seem a little more manageable. I begin to relax, and I just focus on my garden. At the end, I can physically see all of the progress that I’ve made, and know that I have made a difference. I put some care back into the universe, and it feels good.”
“Regardless of if you want to try this and help me garden today, I’m grateful and happy that you’re here. Life is feeling particularly overwhelming right now, and everyone is going through a lot. Uh, no, that came out wrong. What I mean is... it’s understandable that you’re feeling anxious and overwhelmed. When I say that everyone is, that’s not to tell you to just ignore what you’re feeling and continue on and fake it till you make it. Honestly, that’s what got me into so much trouble. It’s to hopefully let you know that it’s okay to feel this way, and that I’m here for you. I can’t make the bad feelings go away. But I *can* sit here with you, and we can either sit in silence and watch the clouds go by until we can breathe again, or we can garden until you’re convinced that if you can manage and work through this mess, that you can do the same with whatever’s on your mind.”
Yuki would smile sweetly, wait for your reply, and eventually peace meanders its way to you.

Don't why the fans especially the manga readers are hyping about tooru breaking the curse when she didn't even do shit. she just went on that silly adventure and be an annoying crybaby whenever she learns something new about the curse. it was actually akito who broke the curse so i can't understand what you are all hyping tohru on.
Ah yes, I to remember the days when I’d be deliberately antagonistic just for fun and beat on female characters for showing emotions and caring about people. Or indeed, resent characters for having entirely realistic reactions to the cosmic horror and terror that surrounds them. Then I turned 16 and HER WE ARE ten years later and I get to see it from a whole new perspective! What fun.
In your misguided attempt to cause drama by shitting on people having a good time by being excited about upcoming character moments, much like Dr Flemming’s unwashed petri dish, you have hit upon something that benefits further discussion and interest.
That point being, was it TOHRU who broke the curse, or was it Akito?
The answer, I believe, is both. SPOILERS FOR ANIME ONLIES TONY YOU ARE WARNED DO NOT @ ME AGAIN IF YOU MESS UP.
When Tohru sets out to break the curse and stop the love of her life from being locked up in a cold dark room for the rest of his existence, she finds out that the curse is firstly, a bond of blood sworn by the spririts of the past and not something that can be physically manifested, and secondly, that the curse has already begun to break RE: Kureno.
Now, there’s a LOT of theories about why Kureno’s curse broke and if it truly was some random event or if there was a trigger. I think it’s a combination of the two. It’s noted by the maids and by (I think) Shigure that this is the first time in a long time that the entire Juunishi are present. There is also a sizeable age gap betwee Hiro and Kureno, that would about match up between Hiro being an infant when Kureno’s curse broke. Ergo, I propose that his curse broke soon after their first New Year’s together as a complete banquet with no spaces missing. Save that of the cat, of course, but more on him later.
Kureno is the rooster, and I believe that in legend the Rooster was seen as the closest to God because he could deliver messages between heaven and earth. Therefore it makes sense that the first to leave God alone, is God’s messenger. “We have had our final Banquet, it’s time to end the cycle.”
Of course Akito/God does not have a positive reaction to this, and the loss of one Juunishi inspires a great sense of loneliness and fear within Akito similar to that which lead to the creation of the bond in the first place. We do not see God being willing to make any attempt to work on achieving the Cat’s wish of finally being able to form friendships beyond the Zodiac and forming bonds with the humans he was so afraid of before.
And THAT is the crux of the matter. Tohru came into the Sohma’s lives and began to break the curse simply by forming close bonds with them all, and letting them into her life and react to the world around them. Hana and Uo are both friends with Kyo and Yuki, actively choosing to spend time together. We also see that in Kyo attending the same school as Yuki, it opens up that same school to Haru and Momiji where they too can form bonds outside of the Sohma influence. It’s a school THEY chose, not the single sex one Akito picked out. Equally this means we have to give some credit to Yuki for making the brave choice of defying his parents and Akito’s wishes by attending a mixed school, and Shigure (who continues to be the mastermind here) for goading Akito into allowing Kyo to also attend that school and not simply pay off the private school he was MEANT to attend and have them let him back in.
It’s also no real surprise that the two other Juunishi whose curses break before the final scene are Momiji and Hiro. Hiro is shown to be forming bonds outside of the Zodiac too. Not only has he matured enough that he is able to understand things from Tohru’s perspective now and has a relatively positive relationship with her, he ALSO becomes a Big Brother with a little sister he adores. Again, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that his curse breaks whilst he is in the same room as her. The Sheep has formed a meaningful relationship outside of the Zodaic, so it is time for the Sheep Spirit to return to its original realm. We then have Momiji, who is absolutely desperately in love with Tohru and is also equally desperate to be allowed to have a relationship with his OWN sister. Momiji’s curse breaks only after he has gone through puberty though and reaches adulthood. It’s when he starts to truly understand the path that is laid before him, and where he stands in it. He WANTS a relationship with Tohru, but he can also recognise that she is in love with Kyo and that makes it all the more painful. He knows that as he ages he is only going to be made to feel more distant from his sister, and that hurts too. HOWEVER, Momiji doesn’t ever stop LONGING for meaningful relationships and a world beyond the life of the Zodiac. He recognises that he does not have anything really tying him to the Sohma anymore, and so his curse breaks. The rabbit spirit has no need to be part of the banquet, and so heads home.
Now, as you can see, whilst Tohru is a key trigger in the breaking of the curse, she’s still not the one to actively do it, right?
Well, wrong. Sort of.
Take note that when we’re told the ACTUAL story of the Original Banquet , we find that the Cat was the first friend God ever made, and was also the first to die. It was the death of the cat that triggered God into creating the eternal bond that would always bring them together, and it was the cat’s terror and dismay at being forced into such a bond that caused them to disown him. The cat has, all along, simply wanted God to make friends. The first who had the curse take effect upon them, was the one who rejectd it the most and as such was then shunned forever more. The cat wanted God to make bonds outside of the Zodiac, and in turn the cat was forever banned form making those bonds. Even though we’ve been show the Cat was granted some realtionships in the form of Kazuma’s Grandmother; it is a relationship made out of pitty rather than love and understanding.
Tohru though? Torhu is the God Damned (excuse the pun) Year of the Cat Fanclub PRESIDENT. Nobody loves and respects the OG Cat Spirit in the way she does. She emphasied with the Cat’s plight in the legend her mother told her, feeling sorry for them being tricked like that and being forced to miss out on being part of the legend. She wanted the cat to join the group! She cradled the cat’s body in much the same way God in his final moments, as instead this time Tohru brings him back into the light and forms a stronger and longer lasting relationship with the cat spirit through love and empathy.
And later on, in that same mountainside, it is TOHRU who is the one who reaches out her hand to god and asks to become friends. It is the act of God forming friends with mortal humans that triggers Akito/God to finally release everyone from their curse. That’s why it happens when it does, when Akito knows that Tohru is safely out of hospital, that she has still welcomed Akito into her life... and that if Akito is going to take those terrifying steps into forming relationships that can end in rejection, she’s going to have to do it on her own two feet.
THAT is how Tohru breaks the curse. THAT is what is important here and what is so FUCKING HARD ROCK about Tohru Honda. We see her willing to stand up to GOD in order to break the curse, but she stands before God as an EQUAL. Tohru WILL break the curse. She WILL fight for her soulmate. She WILL make you be friends with her and address your deep seated issues of self hate and abandonment (not that she has those issues herself ahahahha no I’m just your average happy go lucky teenager with two dead parents who lives in a tent I’M FINE)
Of course, it turns out that everything Shigure and Kazuma told her about breaking the curse was true: That she didn’t have to do anything other than to continue to be herself. HOWEVER, in order to BE herself she needed to try and have a “silly adventure” where she tested her metal and learnt to speak up for herself. Why are we excited? Because we’re going to see Tohru finally find the confidence to speak out against others without harm! We see her get into a fight with Rin about it. We see her refusing to back down against Kagura. We see her standing on her own two feet and saying “No. No I don’t want that. I REFUSE to give in and to leave well alone!”
All before, Tohru has been so scared to speak up for herself because of her debilitating abandonment issues (and please let’s not make fun of people’s mental health issues, okay? I haven’t been having a weekly therapy session for nearly two years now just because for the fun of it) but now she’s got to the point where she feels comfortable and secure enough to show an uglier side to herself that people might reject. She is able to be mean, and shout, and fucking break into someone’s house in order to get what she wants! How can a TRUE fruits basket fan NOT be excitd for that level of character development?
And to end it, please, for the LOVE OF GOD it is 2020. I am 26 years old. I have been on tumblr since 2011. Do not send me hate about female fictional characters and expect me to roll over. My username is “Mrs Mary Morstan”. Mary. Morstan. The most hated female character in all of BBC Sherlock. Do not even try to fucking test me, you Petri Dish.

Yuki Sohma: An In-depth Character Analysis
I remember getting this anime as a recommendation in summer almost 2 years ago. Right, when the reboot season 1 started. I was so engrossed in this that I can’t tell you. The theme of the series always made me keep at the edge of my seat. And yeah, as the title suggests, I got to admire him the most-
Tumblr media
I know, many of you might think that I fell in love with his beauty after seeing him in the anime for the first time, but unfortunately, it’s a big no. I love the characters who care about others so much. And he is the perfect example.
Now, the point is, what makes him steal the top rank for me while most of the fandom is basically about Kyo and Tohru? Let me put down the points. But before that, grab your earphones or headphones, and play this song as you read about the things he has been through.
youtube
1. His selfless attitude
His kind nature shines throughout the series. We see in the beginning that it was he who discovers Tohru living in a tent. He welcomes her to stay in Shigure’s home, even after knowing that their curse is being put at risk and takes care of her fever. After she sleeps, he ventures out in the night to dig up her belongings. Even though he mentions that he had selfishly taken her just to rebel against the family curse, still this is replaced by his benevolent and sweet nature towards Tohru. As a result, their relationship is beautiful.
Tumblr media
He also has helped her countless times, whether it’s taking her back from her relatives, or lending her hand to carry the grocery bags. These all moments define how pure their bond is and how both trust and care each other.
Tumblr media
2. His willingness to sacrifice everything
This point actually reminds of Kasumi Toshiki from Romance MD: Always on Call. Even though he appears plain on the surface, he can go to any extent just for the sake of her happiness. One instance of this can be from season 2 episode 22. Kyo and Tohru seem to be in the hallway, with Tohru trying to grab the script from his hands. Just then, Yuki says whether they would give him way to go upstairs. It is obvious that Yuki would have seen the whole thing, but for her sake, he doesn’t interrupt. The line he says here is-
“You are precious. I look up to you. I cherish you because you provided for me what I desperately longed for.”
Now what did he yearn for? It was Tohru’s love and affection for him, which he didn’t get from anyone else, not even his mother when he was a child.
Tumblr media
3. The heart-fluttering sweet moments and his character development
Ah! Thanks to the production for such sweet moments of Yuki and Tohru. Even if the ship is not canon, they will still remain my favorite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my opinion, this story actually portrays Yuki’s development in character more than any other thing. This is amazing. The boy, who was unable to let go of his dark past, the truth that he was after was covered with a lid, all are slowly untangled with Tohru’s compassionate nature towards Yuki. Unlike the fan club who adored him only for his looks, she sees him in a different, more friendly light, which mellows him up. What’s more, the once timid boy builds up so much courage within himself that he doesn’t get afraid of Akito anymore and confronts her face to face. The warmth he searched for, finally reaches him just like a soft feather, landing on his palm, giving a soft and soothing touch of happiness.

Let’s look at this background here. Yuki is surrounded by chinese bellflowers, which symbolize honesty, unchanging love and obedience. In his hand lays a white rose, which means, devotion, and innocence. The color white itself and his name are a symbol of peace and silence. This actually is an imagery for his character, and it resembles it truly.
Yuki had no intentions of getting on bad terms with Kyo. But it’s seen in episode 20, that Kyo shouts at him outside the banquet saying it was all his fault. Although he was small, but those words were like a heavy blow to him. What’s more, even when he comes back crying hoping for his mom to console him, she slaps him and warns him not to disappear again. (Noo... T^T)

(Kyo shouts this to him outside the hall.)
There is some fault with Kyo as well for this point. All Yuki wanted was to become friends with him. He yearned for the parental love and friendship which Kyo had since his childhood. But, the latter has the misunderstanding that Yuki had everything.
Yuki says this when he remembers that Kyo didn’t take the hat from his hand when he gives him. This makes him cry so hard, cause he was just a little child going through these painful things, all at once.
“There was something I wanted. Parents who would embrace me. A home I wanted to return to.”
Tumblr media
(Yuki cries after being ignored by Kyo.)
Even though Kyo’s behavior initially compelled him to be like that, even though he knew that there is a lot Kyo was internally suffering from, but in episode 22, he just couldn’t take it anymore. Instead of debating, he stays silent and shows his most vulnerable and hurt face to Kyo, because he didn’t want things to end up like that between them. He didn’t want the person he admired to lash out at him every time, when he was at no fault at all, and still is the prey of Kyo’s anger and apathy. This only leaves Kyo speechless, making him break the window out of frustration. This part pains me a lot, because Kyo had at least someone he can throw out his anger and put the blame. But Yuki didn’t even had that.

There is again this pretty imagery here. Yuki, when looking at Kyo, is bathed with the sunlight. This symbolizes the change he has gone through and accepted it, which is really stunning to notice.
[The rest are in paragraph form from here]
Now that I have talked much about his positive points, let’s explore a hot topic which is often a reason of disagreement between Yuki’s fans and Kyo’s fans.
What are Yuki’s actual feelings towards Tohru?
I know that almost all the fandom here will say these feelings which he talks about is what a mother would give to his child. And this point strengthens a lot more as it was confirmed by the author. If that’s the case, then let me state my thoughts on this, which are opposite to the author’s.
Let’s again move back to episode 22 of season 2. In the first half, Yuki talks to  Kakeru about his first meet with Tohru when he was a child. At that time, he was tortured so much by Akito, both physically and mentally, that he thinks that there is no purpose of his life, and he is not needed by anyone at all. With this thought in mind, he disguises himself with a baseball hat and runs away from the Sohma estate. After some time, he discovers Tohru’s mother, Kyoko, crying because she was missing. He suddenly remembers to have seen her earlier, crying in the street, and helps her to reach her mother. At last, he places the hat on her head and disappears. It is later seen that he has converted to his rat form, and cries on realizing that at least at that point, he was needed by Tohru, and his thoughts were proved wrong.
Tumblr media
He mentions that he almost forgot to ask her name at that time. And when he again was hitting the bottom, Tohru approaches him in the high school, slowly building courage and giving love to him. He also discovers later that the girl, whom he once his hat was none other than Tohru. With things unravelling, their bond becomes stronger.
But, although he mentions that he had only motherly affection towards her and couldn’t see her in a romantic light, I still doubt the line itself.
“But she appeared before the hopeless me once again. To be with me, close to me. She even listened to what someone like me had to say. Time after time, she accepted me time and again. She’s beloved to me. Like how the sky feels so close, yet so far.”
Tumblr media
This line, although somehow shows that Yuki is saved by Tohru every time he is in need of it, but it feels weird to say that he only thinks of her as a mother here. I mean, one can also feel like this if he/she is helped by a good friend, or a dear one. And Yuki also mentions that she is beloved to him. But, what about the last line? Doesn’t it sound like, he can’t reach her even if she was close to reach? Because this is the exact meaning. If we analyze word by word, then this makes sense, as Yuki had already realized by that time that Kyo and Tohru had mutual feelings towards each other. In fact, he says it himself that it dawned on him in the last episode of season 1 when Tohru chases after Kyo into the forest, the latter being converted to his monster form. And how could he not? This guy is mature enough to figure out anything. Then this would have been nothing.
One instance of this realization could be the beach arc episode 7 , where he says-
“I probably actually knew, in the back of my mind. What would happen if I opened the lid. What I must do. Thanks for always being willing to lend an ear. Thanks for always accepting my weaknesses.... You probably don’t know that you are the one who’s always saving me. You always shared your kindness, warmth, and joy with me. That’s why, I won’t lose. I will keep going forward, and keep believing.”
Tohru asks the exact thing which was going on my mind listening to that voice acting. Why did he look so sad there? And Yuki replies that she is just like the sky, very dear to him. Doesn’t it sound exactly like a confession to a person about what she did for you till now? Yuki already had realized that, and this is just a proof. He sounds sad, and he also compares her to the sky. The metaphor which comes to mind is that he is basically symbolizing that her vast expanse of kindness is just like the sky, which is so close, yet so far. Even if he wanted, he can’t keep her all to himself. That’s why he just says that she is dear to him. The way it is portrayed here, is just like saying goodbye before parting ways. Huh... I didn’t continue the season afterwards because of this scene. T~T
Tumblr media
(Why, why did he cry after saying that she was dear to him....? Isn’t it right in front of your eyes? *sobs*)
And, if he only sees her as a mother, then what does this mean-
“I was so confused, not to mention incredibly embarrassed. I wasn’t sure how to deal with it, so I didn’t. I shut it away immediately. I stuffed those feelings down, teased and flirted like a normal guy with the girl he likes. But still, it felt wrong.”
It’s clear here. He had somehow developed romantic feelings for her, earlier. But when he realized it was not what he meant, and saw the gradual progression of Tohru and Kyo liking each other, he changes his mind, thinking that he might have been wrong the whole time. That the feelings he harbored for her weren’t correct. But when he thinks of her as a mother, he feels embarrassed. And it’s no different. Why wouldn’t anyone feel like that if it’s someone of your age? This implies that their relationship wasn’t a romantic one, but not a motherly one either.
Kakeru asks the same thing next. He says that maybe he has twisted his thoughts and feelings just after knowing that he had lost her to Kyo. But Yuki denies it saying-
“It’s not true why I feel like this. But, he properly sees her as a woman. He loves her. You can see it in his eyes. Her too. The way she looks at him... But I... I don’t want that! That isn’t what I want! I’d feel... so lonely. I am not willing to give up. I don’t know when to give up.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Such a pure boy... Just cried after saying that... )
Definitely as said above. He is obviously jealous of Kyo here. Not in a romantic way, but because he didn’t want Tohru’s kindness and hope she gave him to recede away. Even if it was like a good friend, he wanted to stay by her side. He is mature enough to see the bonds that she and he shared. And he is not the type to fret over getting rejected or anything like that. Moreover, you can already get a hint from the line that he approved of Kyo and Tohru. This always impresses me. The bond that these two have is so beautiful and unspoken, that it transcends romance itself.
Although this is probably half of my reasonings, I will stop here. Although I covered the most important ones here, but I wanted to discuss many other scenes too. Let’s keep it for next time!

Things about this last season of Fruits Basket I’m not jiving with:
The loss of the box and the lid metaphor--the anime dropped that with Yuki, and the emotional parallels and theming's for the series has suffered. Akito’s physical box that she didn’t want to open is no longer as striking, because we’ve lost the ongoing metaphor of each character having a box with the emotions they don’t want to look at/process locked inside. In the manga, this theme continues on with Tohru’s internal monologues, where she’s placed her feelings about her mother and her father’s deaths and the trauma she’s endured because of it. Kyo has one as well, which brings me to:
Kyo remembered Kyoko every second he spent with Tohru, and it destroyed him. The broken promise, her death, and his helplessness is an ongoing thread as he processes his emotions for her and his place in the world. He didn’t repress the memory, he surpressed it, and shoved it into that tightly lidded box. (In ch. 120, he says “I wanted to pretend... to forget everything that happened to me. All I had to do was hate.” not... that he iterally forgot.) In ch. 90, when it really starts weighing on him, it’s shown explicitly that he remembers reaching for Kyoko, and he asks himself if he’s okay pretending that he’s “forgotten”.
Are we just entirely skipping Katsuya????????? He’s in the chapters where Kyo remembers meeting up with Kyoko (ch 90-93) and should have been covered last week/this week.
I get that people don’t like that storyline, for obvious reasons, but it’s intensely important to not only how Tohru was raised, but why she is the way she is. It also highlights how Kyoko herself was raised, why she parented the way that she did, why she was so gentle with Uo-chan, why she treated Kyo with such kindness, and why his last memory of her is so intensely jarring. Just hinting at Kyoko’s depression after his passing is doing Tohru’s intense trauma disservice, and why it’s such A Big Deal that she casts Kyoko’s last words away, and why she’s so hesitant to admit that someone else comes in her heart first. People saving people by teaching them to be human, that their emotions matter even when their current actions are toxic and harmful, because all people suffer and should be treated with basic care and dignity, is such a huge huge huge plot point in Fruits Basket. To do away with one of the largest binding threads in the manga is to lesson the impact that basic care had on the cast. I know that Takaya was very particular about terms in order for this anime to be made after the original anime, so she may have greenlit this change herself, but I still dislike it.
WHERE IS MY MEAT WIFE!? Komaki, while only a side character, is someone I definitely miss because I’m sure she’s cut entirely from the anime despite the setup for her intro being baked into s2. She’s from chapter 112, and it just is a small aside to the fact that the crash that killed Kyoko was not a single-person casualty, and is an alternate look at grief, blame, and loss. It closes the open thread to Kakeru’s original interest in Tohru, and gives Yuki more context to Tohru’s loss. Also: I just think she’s neat.
