#I just know dc thinks they'll be good for a while after this in terms of representation... no dc MAKE THEM ALL GAY
It seems the Nexstar acquisition of CW is near completion.
A summary: Nexstar takes a 75% stake, Paramount Global (which owns CBS, which co-owns CW) and Warner Bros Discovery (which recently acquired WB, which co-owns CW) with 12.5% each. Instead of paying cash, Nexstar would take on the network losses which are over $100 million per year.
Some ramblings:
Previous industry spec was Nexstar mostly be interested in CW’s digital assets—streaming. Now the reporting says Nexstar is interested in making CW a “fully sustainable broadcast network" which changes the spec a bit.
Reminder again, it's important NOW to support the kinds of shows you want to see more of, and going forward. While their streaming value still matters, the emphasis on a fleshed-out broadcast network means Nielsen ratings get more weight.
I'm just throwing around spec myself, but it seems unlikely Nexstar is therefore going to ditch scripted programming to become a 24/7 conservative news platform like I saw tossed around as an idea on twitter.
And I'd be careful about making hard assumptions on what kinds of scripted programming they want. Yes, they want to tilt older and the “homeland-heartland” spec from last year might be a factor and we know what that means. But to be a successful broadcast network, they need a variety of programming, appeal to different demos and different interests. If Nexstar accounting sees diverse shows as money-makers, they'll be assets. It comes down to money. If they think they can make a profit, they’ll still want those shows, not solely series that appeal to a middle aged straight white male demo.
Long term, I think WBD and Paramount want their shows on their own native platforms.
Short term, I don’t think that’s happening yet, but...it's a real thing.
SPN on HBO Max isn’t a fandom pipe dream, down the line this could actually happen.
Anyway, CW was never a full network. It has no studio of its own. It’s a delivery platform for WB and CBS, effectively a loss-leading tax shelter, and I don't think they cared about it much, or about the quality of the programming or marketing. The model wasn’t sustainable. It was never profitable.
CW had some great moments and great shows, there are some talented creative people and actors who have worked there, I'm not here to put down people's shows. But it often was a dumpster fire, across shows. Which is why a lot of us fans cold turkey boycotted it. Why there's been a lot of rage and backlash, from more than one fandom.
I ended my boycotting--which I stuck with for a year--because of the announced sale. It opened up the chance for a clean-up and needed changes.
No it isn't because of my faves. But I feel a lot better about the projects my faves are involved in because when I settled down to watch some shows I chose for targeted support, I found a lot of improvement. I’m not knocking the diversity that was there before, but the intersectionality, the depth of the usually under-represented pov's, is going farther. There used to be a lot more tokenization, more mishandling, or half-way good and bad.
There’s also a recent vibe of “no such thing as too much rep” which is refreshing to see. Shows that started out diverse keep adding more.
The shows I’m supporting: Kung Fu, All American (and I will be watching All American: Homecoming), Nancy Drew, Tom Swift (please, please check out Tom Swift, it’s a goddamn DELIGHT). I’ll be watching The Winchesters — which looks like a promising start to a far more expensive and inclusive SPN universe, as well as giving us some much needed Dean pov after the disastrous finale — and Gotham Knights — which intrigues me as a dc fan as a sort of elseworlds type scenario, and centers queer characters, women, women of color, PoC, along with having the treat of Misha Collins portraying Harvey Dent.
(There’s still some tokenization, on some shows, mixed with at least some attempts to do a little better, it’s not perfect across the board).
Other thing to note: The death of the Arrowverse wasn’t really because of the sale. I think that ‘verse winding down was inevitable, after many years and lbr--declining quality, and I'm saying this as a former big fan of the Arrowverse shows. That was also WBD and DC wanting an overhaul of the DCEU. Arrowverse had some great shows, but they were underperforming by DCTV standards. No, CW did not cut those series to get rid of the diversity, if you look at the new gen diverse CW series that line of thinking makes no sense. It was a cull based on lowest performers, and a DC show with a diverse cast—Gotham Knights—was added.
I'm here to support the shows and the people who make the shows, I don't stan for corporations. Some fans seem to think their brand loyalty should be to CW and they evangelized in a baffling way, but their brand loyalty was not to CW. It was to a particular show, or a set of shows, it's brand loyalty to franchises, and sometimes it's brand loyalty to a favorite actor. Don't get mixed up about this.
And if things go fully pear-shaped with Nexstar, I'm happy to support those shows on other platforms.

I'm curious about what you'd do with Bluebird if given the chance to write her.
I had to think about this for a while, while I always claim to know what to write involving Harper, I like to think it shifts to match current events in the comics.
If I was able to write Harper, I'd make her the focus character of the book; one thing I dislike about Punchline: The Gotham Game is that Punchline isn't a very interesting person to follow. Harper was originally intended to reflect changes in Gotham's landscape, so let's circle back to that idea. Let her be a public works employee trying to make heads or tails of what's going on Gotham with her younger brother.
I don't think The Gotham Game will resolve the issues with the Royal Flush Gang by the end of issue 6, so they'll be the villains. Every head of a respective suit should be a challenge in their own right, not just Punchline.
I like the idea of each Suit being in charge of something in Gotham. My notes have the following:
Spades: Information
Diamonds: Illicit Goods
Clubs: Technology
Still got to think of something for Heart. Maybe Public Relations?
Ideally, I'd like my own title. Hopeful thinking, I know, but anyone who's read Sword of Azrael knows how much better a story becomes when it's made with a love for the character.
After the last chapter of Punchline, Harper probably is sticking to the shadows, out of the view of cameras and cellphones. Have her and Cullen set up in Tim's hideout in The Narrows (last seen in Batman Eternal).
In terms of length, the series would ideally be six arcs long, more if DC will let me write beyond the framework of the Royal Flush Gang. The storylines would go:
Establish framework and the stakes (2 issues)
Versus Clubs (3 issues)
Versus Diamonds (with a B-Plot involving Cullen finally throwing Ace of Diamonds/Bluff to the curb!) (4 issues)
Versus Hearts (3 issues)
Versus Spades (3 issues)
Versus Royal Straight Flush (and resolution) (5 issues)
After every arc I'd have Harper develop a new piece of tech or tool to add to her arsenal. Maybe reverse-engineer something that was used against her in the previous arc. I know she's started using escrima sticks but I think a cattle prod would be so much better for her. Fits her electricity theme. I'd probably show more of how her current suit still is derived from the New 52 Red Robin suit.
I'd probably also have a one-shot story (maybe an annual) where I could write about how the end of Death Metal (and the dissolution of every Crisis) has affected people in the DC Universe. Imagine living a life and then, suddenly, you have memories of a life different than your own. Imagine your friends and family trying to make sense of it all with this new information. Relationships could stop immediately without resolution and the emotional fallout could destroy a character (if you couldn't tell I'm talking about the lack of Harper and Cass interactions. Heck, Harper having any interaction with the Batfamily for the last six years has been pretty sparse).
I'd stay away from having crossovers with other members of the Batfamily, maybe have Bruce undercover but it's like Where's Waldo? where only after an arc does the audience know where he was. Instead I'd like to incorporate homages and characters from previous books, like Moose and Qadir Ali.

I follow the #Jason-Todd tag and that panel from Cheer where Jason and Bruce hug popped up on my dashboard because it's recommended to me and I realized that I'm so sick of seeing that panel. I hate it and I hate how people gush over it. Cheer was a crap story and Zdarsky was a crap writer for Jason. That moment from Cheer was cheap and unearned yet it seems a lot people are eating it up. But it made me think, what's your opinion on it? Do you think it's people looking at the panel in isolation and not realizing how cheap it is? Is it accepted because it's canon that satisfies fanon? Is it Jason fans being so starved for good content that they'll accept this even if they know it's not good? Or do you think it's something else?
Oh Anon, you are one brave soul! I stay away from all comic related tags here on tumblr, it is just not a place that gives me joy, you know?
It is funny that you bring up that panel of Jason and Bruce in Urban Legends because just today I was greeted by a post of Jason and Damian “hugging” in that Robin #5 issue, and it is always funny to see it going around without the consequent panel that shows Damian electrocuting Jason.
Like, to me it is obvious that fandom leaches on to every badly written/out of context fluffy “batfam” moment that canon throws our way. Same thing with the Jason and Bruce hug. Because that hug that happened in Urban Legends: Cheer never happened in real life, that hug (it didn’t look like much of a hug to me but okay), happened in the supposed utopia that Jason saw when he was dosed with Cheer (the drug).
That utopia world that Jason saw was completely OOC for Jason, it made zero sense for it to be something that Jason would ever want, please fanon and DC, stop making Chonky boring by encapsulating him in the “he wants his fam to love him”, what appears in that made up world couldn’t be further from what Jason has ever wanted from Bruce, and it pisses me off that people are so willing to dismiss Jason’s true characterization over him being Bruce’s “beloved son” and they love each other so so much. Give me a break fanon, Bruce is a horrible person to all of his kids and Jason would actually be better off if Bruce stopped existing.
(Maybe I got a bit too mad there, but I can’t say that I am sorry about it)
So, that hug was actually non-existent, and the only real contact between Jason and Bruce was a forced handshake at the end of the issue, after Jason had told Bruce that he was going to stop using the guns but not for Bruce or his rules. So, fandom LOVES to take every piece of badly written content and cling to it as if makes sense or validates the “Jason sees Bruce as family and is finally going back to where he belongs”.
Now, you may be aware of this Anon, but I absolutely despise the concept of “Batfamily” and the idea of Jason being in good terms with Bruce after all he has done to Jason. I hate it and there is no way around it. And much like you I strongly believe that the Cheer story was crap and that Zdarsky was a crap writer for Jason.
In my review of the last part of that story, I believe I said that to me it looked like Zdarsky wanted to write a Batman story and DC only offered him a Red Hood story with Batman as an annoying side character. I don’t think for a second that Zdarsky knew who Jason Todd was before he became Robin, while he was Robin or why he became the Red Hood. He is an excellent writer, yes. But he wasn’t a good choice to write a RED HOOD story because it never really looked like he cared about that character, he only seemed to care about writing about Jason’s relationship with Bruce because Batman is the one that matters.
Obviously, I don’t blame Zdarsky solely for that horrendous “Red Hood” story, I actually blame DC and their need to make Jason Todd/Red Hood a bland and pathetic character. Their NEED to make Jason “fit” in their Batfamily bullshit has made them write the most nonsensical things, and have made the complex and strong character of Red Hood into another Batman lackey. And no, this is not me saying that other Batman-related characters are bland or anything, I am saying that Jason being a Batman-related character doesn’t work, it destroys his character and erases his unique feeling in the Gotham-vigilante world.
We don’t need another vigilante that doesn’t kill because of Batman’s stupid rule, we need variety, WE NEED RED HOOD TO BRING DUALITY BACK TO GOTHAM CITY!
Alright, that was a little rant that was not asked for, sorry about that.
So, let me answer your questions in a clear way because this is a mess.
“Do you think it's people looking at the panel in isolation and not realizing how cheap it is?”
I think that there are many people who are just getting into comics or who haven’t read comics in a long time that might see that and be like, “oh wow it seems like Jason and Bruce have a good relationship now”. Or maybe there are people within fandom that don’t like Jason or just don’t care for him and see that panel of them and they go “seems like the black sheep of the family has decided to play by the rules”.
Both of those ideas as a UtRH Jason stan and just a Jason Todd/Red Hood stan (Jason Nation!), kinda make my blood boil, because as you say, those people don’t really see how much that characterization or out of context panel, hurts Jason’s already messy characterization. And I don’t want Jason to be like Batman or for him to be “the black sheep of the family”. I want him to be interesting and complex and I want him to stay far away from Batman’s drama while he still works in Gotham City.
With this I am not trying to say that people who don’t read comics or are just in fandom for the fanon narrative are wrong or don’t have a place here. I am not a gatekeeper or anything, but I would like it if people were more willing to see that fanon and canon are not the same thing and that the fanon ideas and narratives don’t fit in canon, and they actually just mess up characterizations.
What’s fanon is great and should exist within the fandom, but when fanon leaks into canon I would actually love it if people started realizing that while it might be cute or adorable, it doesn’t fit the canon narrative and it actually serves the purpose of hiding Bruce’s abusive and manipulative actions towards his kids, that keep on being hidden and not treated as what they are, abuse.
“Is it accepted because it's canon that satisfies fanon?”
Absolutely, it helps the fanon narrative. But only if you take those panels without context, and spread them like a wildfire (which is what fandom does). If fandom ever gave context or remembered issues like Batman and Robin vol.2 #20, Nightwing vol.3 #30, Teen Titans vol.5 Annual #1, then those soft and whatever moments wouldn’t be taken as fact, or at least that’s what I like to believe.
“Is it Jason fans being so starved for good content that they'll accept this even if they know it's not good?”
I am starved for good Jason content, I have been for a long time. And that need for content makes me want good quality content, I understand that is not the case for everyone but come on, I pay for these comics, I would like to have some good writing in exchange.
I know that the version of Jason that I love will never come back but I am still hoping for a writer to tidy up the Jason that we have now. Maybe that writer will be Rosenberg, I lived what I read in that side story in Detective comics and I really want us to get a win. Jason’s character deserves it and so does Jason Nation.
“Or do you think it's something else?”
All of the above my dear Anon.
Don’t lose hope though, I might be biased but I do really think that Rosenberg will bring some very good writing Jason’s way! Fanon is fun and all, and if you interact with that content make sure to go with an open mind, or be like me and avoid it at all costs!
I hope you have a relaxing and chill weekend Anon! Thank you for sending me this ask!

Yeah it's the same anon 💜 dude my apologies for the amount of crap I've spewed in your ask box but in my defense no one I know gives a shit about batfam or gotham rogues or Alfred (I've gushed here about alfreds fabulousness too opps) anndd I partly blame you for me falling back into the titans trap cuz s1 was meh I forgot I even watched s2 😅 then I seen some titans stuff on your blog and boom my brain latched onto it and now here I am experiencing maternal fear for my son jason 😢you are 1000% right this jason is PERFECTION as robin like actual perfection I dunno why but I thought this robin was like 16? So I was thinkin how tf is 16/17 yo supposed to be redhood!? It work in comics/cartoon but live action 16 y/o redhood seems meh I kinda want the lazarus pit just I freakin want TALIA but I don't think that's gonna happen I dunno
Tbh (this may be biased) but I think the Gotham tv show is literally the best dc comics adaptation of anything ever! it is superior to all thier shows movies animations and the arrowverse at least in my books lol
Tumblr is my only form of 'social media' and I don't keep up with updates or anything about shows cuz I like to pretend the fiction is real and I don't want reality wrecking that for me like hahahaa so I had no clue about timmy or babs but I'm so happy
DUDE YES this is literally the only time I can see bruce ever killing the joker on screen aww please I want it so bad I mean they probably won't but they should cuz this is the only capacity in which batman can kill the joker live action like if down the line somewhere on another show/movie bruce killed joker he prob wouldn't be dead dead or they'd bring him back some way so the kill wouldn't even matter but old bruce killing the joker because he's finally had enough he's old now, jasons death finished him and he's not gonna be batman anymore it's a nice end for batman and the joker, it's the only way we'll ever get this end cuz like you said they'll never have the balls to permanently kill joker any other way in live action everything is aligning perfectly for this to happen so dang dc just freakin let it happen c'mon
Yo whose your first fav rogue? Is it riddler? I feel like mines riddler haven't really thought much about whose my fav gotham rogue but I'd probably say riddler, I prefer the central city rogues but the Gotham rogues are just pure chaos and I'm living for that hahaa
I'd rather superheros/vigilantes/villians in live action not have relationship drama just put them in a relationship or dont like I came for the action and weird super shit not the ordinary relationship drama thankfully titans seem to be doing okay in this aspect I do quite like dickkory a lot but I mean in the supergirl show ughhh I was like I came here for the flying and the dope laser eyes I don't give a shit about her getting a boyfriend like seriously whyyy
My brain decides to jump about obsessing over characters like one week Kory is my wife next week detective grayson is my husband and I AM NIGHTWING then my brain is like no Barbara kean is wifey just basically fictionally I'm married to everyone 😅
Yikes this was so long sorry girl
Omg, pls don't apologize! I get so dang excited whenever i get an ask, yours always make my day, you don't even know! Like same about no one i know caring about dc/batfam! And talking to someone about it is so much better than yelling into the wind here on a text post that no one reads xD Don't stop sending your asks whenever you wanna dump your feels/talk about dc/batfam omg.
And Im so proud I got you into this Titans spiral xD My work here is done hahahaha. But yes, I feel like his looking so young for red hood over shadows how great his jason robin performance was! Love seeing him get that recognition! But yeah, the age is def off, like I cant remember how old they said he was in the show, maybe 16? but too young for red hood in live action form. Like its hard cause in reality 16 year olds and 19 year old boys typically don't look too different, for the most part, while comics you can get get away with it more. Huh, yeah, it doesn't seem like Talia is gonna happen, maybe just maybe a cameo or something? Cause we also weren't expecting joker but here we are(tho it almost looks like he wont be a big plot point/even see him much, it almost looks like it is just showing how brutal gotham is? But like its just the trailer and doesnt always give the full picture so who knows!)
Omg YES about Gotham! I 1000% agree! Im also biased cause its what got me into batman, again like exactly a year ago! It got me into the world like no other media of dc had before!(well, Shazam did, i guess tech thats the start of my interest in dc/first time i read the comics, but gotham is what really got me into this spiral). I hate how much hate it gets, like yeah its not perfect and they took creative liberties obviously, but i 100% agree that its the best adoption of DC yet! 100%! Its so nice to see the characters and rogues fleshed out more. I feel like it successfully did what Nolan tried to do in terms of making it dark and realistic, but in a way that was more accurate and true to the comics! I wish it wasn’t canceled so early and thus the last season had to be so rushed :(
thats smart, i typically dont look for spoilers and stuff anymore but I just got so hyper focused that I had to look at least what the stars were putting out on social media, but yeah, i use to get so caught up in all that that it took the fun out of seeing it live.
Oh my gosh, that would seriously be the PERFECT end to batman and joker story in this universe omg. Amen about all that! And like it would hopefully show Jason how much he cares? So maybe Bruce would kill him after red hood emerges? It will be interesting to see hat causes Jason to be so dang pissed in this version.
ahaha yes riddler is my fav! (my header gave it away didn’t it xD) I love most Riddlers but ESPECIALLY gotham riddler, Ed is like one of my fav character of all time. Oooh, I don’t know central city rogues all that well(well, way more than Metropolis rogues, I know so little about superman world), like I know some from the first 3 and a half seasons of the flash (I watched a couple years ago but got busy with school and couldn’t keep up and just never caught up/didnt have motivation to finish(plus i forgot so much id have to rewatch everything again), but I saw they finally just introduced Bart Allen, so I have have to randomly jump back in for a bit cause Bart is one of my favsss), and the ones in the cartoons and stuff
Ha! true, i dont mind it when its for character development or if I happen to be super into the ship(like Nygmakins in Gotham omg, I know they are super unpopular but they are like one of my OTPs omg), I feel like it has to be balanced right/not too much focus on the drama of the relationship over everything else. Like a minor subplot is good but don’t make it the focus of the show. And yeah , supergirl never appealed to me cause of that reason! i like drama and not JUST action (I like psychological drama, as long as there is comfort to follow xD) but yea i get what u mean by too much relationship focus . I think, for the most part, Gotham did that pretty well.
omg i love the disaster bi vibes you are giving off xD But omg I feel the jumping around thing so much ahaha. Like right now the 4 robins are constantly on rotation on who I’m obsessing over at the moment tbh xD
Omg mine responses are just as long, don’t apologize!!!! <333333333333333

I know you said you wouldn't say anything about this new arc where even though both Bruce and Diana have their partners they'll be almost forced to be together BUT PLEASE I NEED THE ANGER BC I'M WAY TOO PISSED WITH THIS SHIT
This is the one and only time I’m going to break my most sacred and cardinal rule.
ffs the man is ENGAGED and Diana has her own serious relationship. Can you even conceive how disrespectful that is to their partners? No one would ever decide to have Superman, who is married and has a child, or Scott Free flirt around. It’s like saying because neither couples have a fictional piece of paper to “legitimize” their relationships it’s okay because those relationships aren’t as valid. They are valid. All loving and committed relationships are valid and deserving of respect.
I have a really strict rule about not talking about other ships on here for a lot of reasons; one being that no matter what I’m saying it’s just going to be seen as a ship thing, but it’s not just a ship thing; tbh I don’t care who ships who I’m just trying to have a good time. But this goes so far beyond a ship thing.
Sharp tried to cycle back on twitter yesterday, because a lot of Wonder Woman (not wonderbat but Wonder Woman) fans were upset about it, so what will actually occur in the book is likely to be very, very minor but Justice League is coming out so it’s time to pander to the wonderbat crowd. Sharp has sworn up and down that Diana is with Steve, but also made totally disingenuous comments about how writers try to please everyone (they don’t and never have) and false equivalences about crackships.
If that were true how come I haven’t seen one alternate reality featuring Superman and Batman as lovers? That is neither here nor there because this story is not an alternate reality.
It’s a blatant example of how Diana is shuffled from one ship to the next depending on what DC’s currently trying to capitalize off of. Remember when Wonder Woman was coming out and wondertrev was brought back from the dead after like 30 years and there were dolls and merchandise around them and Steve even got his own one-shot? Well it’s five months later and DC has a new movie to promote. Not to say that I don’t adore wondertrev, because I do. Just pointing out that DC didn’t care about the ship until they saw an opportunity to make money off of it.
Misogyny is always at the root of either relationships. It can’t be accomplished without eliminating or diminishing important female characters like Lois Lane and Catwoman (and to a lesser extent Steve Trevor who is an important representation of gender role reversal). Being in a relationship with either Batman or Superman always requires that Wonder Woman sacrifice too much or herself and what she means, and I expect someone who admires Greg Rucka as much as Sharp claims to to understand that. It’s never about her or her story; it’s always about enhancing their story which is why when it does happen Wonder Woman loses her feminist message, becomes Batman or Superman’s sexy sidekick, gets fridged, and we end up with misogynistic garbage like this:
This was licensed. Even within the fandom it’s all about the men (“Bruce/Clark wants”, “Bruce/Clark needs”, “Bruce/Clark deserves”). Just the other day I was forced to see this:
So Diana is what…just a reward for Bruce’s heroism? Not one wonderbat shipper stepped in to call this blatant misogyny out. I’ve been in this fandom for over ten years and not once has anyone bothered to explain what they have to offer her in a relationship. It’s always about Diana’s light curing Bruce’s darkness, or Clark needing someone who’s as physically strong as him to identify with. If I’m going to be as honest as I’ve ever been I find the idea that Batman has anything of substance to benefit Diana in a relationship laughable. That and they have absolutely nothing in common, but that’s just my opinion.
Not only that but it interferes with the messaging of every character involved. Wonder Woman and Superman are supposed to be powerful outsiders who identify with and defend humanity because of the human people around them. When they get together it’s because they feel like no one understands them. It’s like they’re above us instead of on our level. Also Superman is canonically said to be the only one stronger than Wonder Woman, which guts everything she’s supposed to represent in terms of the rejection of patriarchal gender norms.
While Batman and Wonder Woman do a little better in terms of power structures, Batman is still the most overexposed male character in the entire DCU (I love him but he does not need as many titles as he currently has). Wonder Woman often gets treated as a supporting characters instead of her own hero, as do many characters born from the bat-books. Wonder Woman has been no exception.
To be honest I think a lot of these writers use the characters to live out their male power fantasies of being cool Lothario Batman who has sex with every hot female character. Yeah everyone has a ship and that’s fine, but Wonder Woman is too important of a character to become a cool thing for Batman or Superman to have. Her story and who she is is more important than a misogynistic ship and needs to take precedence. She deserves to have a love interest that’s there specifically for her and her story and the people who look to the Wonder Woman books for stories of feminine strength, intersectional feminism, and sisterhood are the ones who should be pandered to.
It is because of this and other longstanding mistreatment of Wonder Woman in the comics that I’ve decided I will no longer read Wonder Woman comics written by men who aren’t Greg Rucka. Maybe one day one will come along to earn my trust, but they don’t have a good track record with her and she’s in desperate need of some tlc.
I think that’s all I’ve got to say on the matter and I’ve been holding this back for a very, very, very, long time. I look forward to blocking all of you salty anti-shippers :)
