trying out game making sounds fun but im realising that some of the simpler type of games are just. ones that i dont play

#specifically visual novels. i do NOT play them theyre not rly what i enjoy #now i dont mean to suggest rpgmaker type games are simple. theres a lot going on #but. those are also games i dont play LMAO #hmm wellllll off is an rpgmaker game. yume nikki #but those arent the style of games i usually play so its hard for me to be like #well what are the conventions of the genre or how are good maps arranged in rpgmaker #those kinds of things. so then ur like well what DO you play #and unfortunately the answer is. mainly platformers LMAO #yeah im checking my steam library rn its really just platformers.#growing up it was shit like. ratchet and clank akenjdfjndbcjx????#these feel like an entirely different level of difficulty. and different way of thinking #i think perhaps my brain is just not wired for game making LMAO but it would still be fun to try....

For someone that actually never really clicked with Yume Nikki, I sure do spend a lot of time reading about it and researching it and exploring Yume 2kki to try and understand why other people saw in the original.

#It's funny I was talking about it with friends earlier and realized I did something similar after I'd watched the film Nope. I got out the #theater with not really a lot of connection with the story and for a week I just read about the themes of the movie and what I'd missed #symbolically and such. I was really bothered by not clicking with it emotionally despite it being something I felt like I would really enjo #I never really reached a understanding with Yume Nikki though. Maybe the way it's told is too abstract for me to connect? I have a similar #issue with poetry sometimes. I still do appreciate Yume Nikki for what it is and how it influenced the medium. The way it tells it's story #is really interesting. Maybe seeing what came after it's influence made the original feel weaker by comparison to me? That might be it.#In a similar vain to how I can emotionally connect with Yume 2kki more than the original sometimes.#Eh. I'm still enjoying the process of interpreting art. It's not like I'm losing anything by continuing to return to this game. I've had #times where I listen to an album and feel nothing but a month or two later it properly hits me. Maybe it'll just take a few years in this #case. I fear that if I continue talking I'll start to ramble in circles so I'll stop for now.

Part of the reason I've hurt my wrists was from typing. I've made a few lifestyle changes that have helped, but I wish I knew how people can type so much/for so long without hurting themselves. I've fallen off using social media much because my life has improved a lot, and though I only really am able to make a consistent wage off commissions, I haven't been motivated to work on things like that. I still feel I have to finish working on Meanderer before I make decisions. I'd love to go back to drawing fanart of things I love like I would when I was posting more consistently. I have played so many games, read and watched many new things. I wish I had some way to speak about them all. There are so many good things out there, and we wait until we have a good excuse to play them, but I figured out that there is no point in waiting for that excuse. There is no reason not to experience something new and insightful. My only regret is not being able to log my experiences in a way that satisfies me. Thus I think of drawing them all. Maybe one day I'll have the time to dedicate myself to draw all these characters I met and love with the same quality as I did OFF, LISA or Yume Nikki. I fear how much time the internet as we know it has on the clock, and if I'll be able to have time to finish my game and also enjoy posting like I used to, at least for a while longer. I suppose it doesn't really matter, as just living life feels pretty wonderful right now. Anyway, if anyone has any typing wrist-pain related tips, I'd like to hear them... Or at lest a place to buy a split keyboard that doesn't cost 300 dollars.

at first i wanted to illustrate gordons fear of opening the door and finding something terrible outside but then i drew the science team and theyre just... normal ppl

but oh well i mean its the science team id be scared of opening my door to them too

gordons fear here kinda progresses. like the night he gets home after the whole incident he only stays inside because he "wants a break from people" but then when he tries to leave the weight of the danger hes been in crushes him and every time he approaches that door his body's reaction is faster and worse

im not sure if the science team would try to keep in touch. id assume yes. maybe this can be good material. tfw the youngest person of the group you experienced horrors with cannot cope

i think i saw you talk about picayune a bit on your twitter! i was wondering about it if you’re willing to give your thoughts. i heard it was similar to that one game that’s called the void rains upon her heart, at least from a friend of mine.

hi anonymous; although i say i could gush about it: i mostly said everything i:d want to on the twitter already, but yeah: i love it, it:s a sneaky "top game of the year" for me, i think, and is one of those passion-projects (?) that just feels as though it carries with it a-lot of love for game design and just the act of creating games; i:d put it like this: i really enjoy survivors-type games because they:re dopamine-traps that just give me skinners-box gratification when i:m struggling to get through a day, but as a genre the games are very formulaic and usually seem like they:re 1) cynically made because the formula is hot + can make some easy cash for little effort since the game-design aspect is just laid out like clean providence 2) made a little more earnestly but usually for a developer as an exercise which happens to also be probably decently lucrative -- and both of these prior points lead to pretty stale experiences, but dopamine-trap experiences that i like all-the-same, as-well: due to me just not having a lot of money outside of my weekly grocery budget, i don:t really let myself spend money on non-grocery things, so: looking @ picayune dreams i was hit with this mix of "this looks awesome" and "i know this formula and the gloss is just going to be another stale 100% achievement grind that:ll eat up my time but leave me mad at myself for wasting $5 when i need groceries" -- but it had a demo, and (happily) the demo betrayed my cynicism and just oozed with sincerity on behalf of the developers, so: i bought it.

it:s a very good blend of shmup/bullet-hell type gameplay and the standard survivors-genre, and although i don:t think it:s the best gameplay in either genre, the experience as one whole is executed perfectly for what it is: it unfolds and never seems lazy in its effort or gameplay; the obtuse mechanics are fun to figure out; the story segments (while super iterative of yume nikki type rpgmaker stuff) have this razor-sharp conciseness for the vibe it wants you to feel that i really enjoy (it reminds me of scientology, archangel:nemesis in a weird way: because the breadth of the plot centers around being selected to save a humanity that is trapped down here on earth, sort-of indifferent to your mission -- and i think it creates this plot really beautifully despite using very little words or demanding a lot of your time (<- this point here is key for me, cause i have northernlion syndrome of nearly no-longer having patience for games that want me to stare at some story for a long time, or hit you with tutorials before gameplay, or whatever: picayune dreams just goes and trusts you to figure it out)).

i haven:t played it much lately, cause (if it had one fault, which is more just my user-experience than the devs) the runs can get to be longer than i have patience for (you can loop and at this point you:re getting close to an hour run), so i end up self-destructing when i get bored;

i:d encourage anyone to give the demo a try, or just look at the steam-page and take in the art direction -- it:s a game that probably won:t let you down if it even /slightly/ looks interesting to you, & i still feel a rush of goosebumps when the final song comes in during the last boss; it:s just solid (void rains upon her heart is another one of these great games for me but i 100%'d it earlier in the year and have just been waiting for the dev to add more content; that:s another game that i think more people should give love to because it blends shmup+roguelite formula better than any other attempt i:ve played and also never really let my expectations as a player down as i trusted it to unfold with content and excitement -- because that:s what i like about this trend of roguelite/meta-progression in games: games that use these are like constantly wanting to award you with more because it:s like they are just so eager to spend time with you and don:t want to let you down (at the least cynical)).

at the moment though i:m just playing DCSS cause i:m back in a "everything feels pretty dull and colorless at the moment" spell -- but again: that:s why i love stuff like picayune dreams and sci-fi harry; occasionally stuff surprises you with its love, its passion, and you can:t help but let yourself be affected, and i like being affected.

It's been a whole year of pushing teens down holes, surviving moss harassment, and surviving actual harassment from a stressful fandom. Despite all the bumps along the road? I'd do it all again.

God I. what a year it's been. I hold this stupid comic so close to my heart, even if it's a ridiculous concept to fuel my hyperfixations. There's still so much left to go, WE HAVEN'T EVEN LEFT THE RUINS YET, but I'm so excited to keep going and show you guys all the ideas I have.

I've met so many people this past year, I never knew how important making that Discord server would be. I've met so many awesome people and it's been such a silly goofy time. Your support means the world to me and it's still a weird feeling that people like my art and like my stories, I'm STILL getting used to that. Thank you all for just being here and sending asks and making me laugh and drawing fanart, you've all made my time here so worth while.

I love our little RPG trio, I'm amazed at my art improvement throughout the year, I'm amazed at the blogs growth, and IT'S JUST SOO MUCHHHHH THANK YOU ALL FOREVER!!!!

I feel so happy to know that RPG3 (and me by association) has helped people actually get into some of these games, and that was kind of a hope I had, I think. I got Chip into both Omori and Yume Nikki with this in one fell swoop and that's hilarious to me. I hope to throw in more games that everyone should hyperfixate over, just like me <3

I hope you enjoy this playable version of the prologue, the thing that started it all! Here's to the continuation of RPG3 and hoping that these funny little protagonists can get back home. I hold these guys so close to my heart. I really, really can't wait to show you guys the future plot points, because, not to brag, I think they're REALLY cool. This is more than just a crossover comic.

Hellooo! I hope you are having a good day :D I would like to request a romantic matchup for Hypmic, Paralive and Pjsk (if that's too much then hypmic and Pjsk please!)

My zodiac is Taurus and my MBTI is INFP, my love language is quality time! (Receiving) usually I'm not shy but it's more like I don't know how to talk to people? I feel like it's mostly awkward since I don't go out of my comfort zone quite often. I also overthink quite a lot, so if I were to talk to someone, I usually practice what I'm going to say in my head to make it sound natural and not too formal because I really don't want to sound weird and nervous talking to them.

I really really like drawing and painting! Both traditionally and digitally. For drawing i mostly draw people but weirdly when I paint, I mostly draw landscapes and scenes, I think that might be because I enjoy painting backgrounds more rather than drawing them. I also like fantasy stories/movies a lot more than other genres and my second favourite is thriller! Not too big on horror though I get scared easily...speaking of getting scared, I have a fear of darkness and frogs (no clue if that's important) I love playing indie games! Plus points if they have pixel art. I don't know what about them makes me like it so much, maybe it's the colours or atmosphere? But games that are like that and I liked are: omori (Favourite!), Yume Nikki, mad father, Ib, Angels of death (2nd favourite!) but I also like puzzle games or turn based games! I like games where you have to think it through or strategize your way through it, it makes it more fun.

For music, I mostly listen to Vocaloid producers or utaite's like Eve (favourite!), soraru, Teniwoha, Surii, PinocchioP, etc. But other than Vocaloid, I mostly listen to hypmic or enstars or paralive songs...

I'm more of a follower rather than a leader although if something goes out of hand or no one takes care of it then I will take the initiative.

I don't do well with new surroundings either, for example moving schools. I will have a harder time making new groups of friends and I also have a hard time getting used to everything 😞. But when I do find a friend group, I will stick with them for a long time (unless they turned into bad people)

I would consider myself as a loyal person, I would not leave someone dear to me ever unless there's a good reason for it. I also value honesty a lot, in my opinion a comfortable friendship or relationship can start with people being comfortable and saying what they want to say. Of course that way of thinking doesn't apply to everyone but that's how I view it.

I know I said I value honesty, but sometimes I can be a little too honest. At some point I can get too blunt with my opinions and accidentally hurt someone. I also struggle with opening up to people. It's not like I don't want them to know, it's more like I'm scared of what they'll think of me after. I don't want their view of me change just because I voiced my struggles 😞.

Oh I also want to slip this in, I absolutely ADORE lolita fashion! Anything with ribbons and laces and big dresses I'd love it, I also like vintage aesthetics, royal and steampunk.

You're making me wanna catch up on my rpg maker backlog, thanks for the motivation! Speaking of Yume Nikki fangames, I really enjoyed Miserere when I played it back in the day. Hard agree also that it's almost impossible to reccomended most deep sea prisoner games unfortunately.

omg I don't think i've heard of miserere :D There was a rly cool yume nikki fangame with like a salvador dali esque world with melting clocks but it kills me bc i cant remember the name of it anymore.

& i love DSP's works but tbh wadanohara was the only game I actually played as a kid and i'm glad i left it at that LMFAO i don't think anyone under like 18 should engage w mogeko stuff like. not just because of the content but also bc i don't know a single person who came out of the trenches of that fandom well-adjusted

well okami is my all time favorite the art & the music & the message/story are all just incredible theres not a single time ive finished it i havent cried. i absolutely adore ryoshima coast ive spent so many hours just running around there to listen to music. which fun fact for u i only know about this game bc in about 6th grade i picked up okamiden bc i thought the little doggy was cute & was like fine i'll play as this boy if i get a cool dog and u cannot imagine how excited i was to find out u DID play as the little dog. i was SOOOOO obsessed literally my exact thoughts were 'if issun is ammy's celestial envoy then i am going to be chibis' i have a metric fuck ton of fan art i did at the time bc i thought it was quote "the epic-est game for ds ever" also cried every time i finished it. i was 13 so i didnt know what "being down bad" was but do know i was as obsessed with kurow as i was with d-ne later and now tenshi not a single irl friend was unaware i was in love with him. also fun fact for u bc at the same time i was also getting super into vocaloid i was so convinced my vocap name would end up as chibiP to the point i named myself that in pkmn x chibiP after chibiterasu of course. please enjoy my banger old art which is not even a fraction of my output

yume nikki is my next favorite game specifically the og that changed my brain chemistry as a kid. i adore that game so much its hard to put it into words. its just so unlike anything else. there is absolutely nothing in the game that can directly harm u theres no real health meter theres no way to die during the main play the absolute worst that will ever happen is u get stuck or woken up. in a horror game. which is already just amazing. and the whole horror aspect just plays on something i dont think is often done as well in many other things. ur alone. u wander and wander thru worlds that loop and connect and seemingly have nothing to do with each other. theres no dialogue; talking to npcs just gets u a noise or animation at best. ur entirely alone with just urself. its all dreams so u know everything is of madotsuki's own creation, another layer to the all u have is urself feeling. the art is just unusual i cant even say any of it on its own is in anyway scary. the whole thing shouldnt be scary and yet every time i start wandering in a world i cant help but feel unease. amazing 10/10 no other game will ever have what this gave me.

everyone knows i play pkmn the best is still pmd sky that also rewired my brain i still cant play it without crying.

its been a long time since i was really just playing it as the chapters released & got translated but 1bitheart is so so so important to me too. i dont kin for multiple reasons but if i did nanashi would be my first choice. like- without saying that to her i got my one irl friend to play once & when she saw how nanashi was she turned to me and went "this is just you" hes very important to me even now. absolutely loved the whole friendship sim & the story & its twists & the endings & their implications left me in shambles at 1 am on a school night. my fave charas are nanashi enri & saaya btw. i should replay this.

i also love the etrian odyssey series i love the character portraits (esp with the more recent games' color customization) i LOVE the dungeon art & i think all the monster designs are so cool. adore the whole make ur own map aspect keeps me so entertained to take a step & look around & chart all the walls & path ways. unfortunately i fucking suck at every single one i am not very good at strategy games so i end up stuck at or before the 3rd stratum. but thats okay its still fun to me.

the other one i'll talk about at length is spirit of the north another game i loved the art of. u play as a fox & get a partner spirit fox & i just love it SOOOO much. its also a game with 0 dialogue but theres A Lot going on it if u care to follow along & explore & dig into details & the game play is also pretty fun to me. this is the one game i started learning the speedrun btw thats also a very fun way to play it but ABSOLUTELY play it as intended first it has so much to offer

ok this is going to sound crazy but hear me out: undertale might be the best game ever.

when i say a statement like that, i don’t mean it as “undertale is my favorite game ever.” if i’m being honest, it probably doesn’t even crack my top 5. i also don’t mean “undertale is objectively amazing and you’re wrong for disliking it.” there’s been plenty of critiques of undertale, and i think all are valid. besides, there will never be a game that every single person enjoys playing, no game will be fun to everyone, and that’s just a fact of life.

what i mean is that there’s no other game that has had a similar impact, and i don’t mean impact in terms of scale, let me explain.

throughout the history of art, art is made with the intention to create something meaningful and impactful. the earliest known art found is the apollo 11 stones found in africa, and while we will never be sure if these were created for recreation, religion, or some other purpose, we can assume they were made because someone, even if it was just one person, thought it would be important. and art has continued to exist for a number of reasons, but it was mostly for recreation, fun, or artistic expression.

i’m unsure of when, but somewhere along the way, art began to be culturally recognized and enjoyed, and as such it began to churn profit. when technology arose to new forms of art in the 1900s, it was created for artistic reasons, but was quickly funded to create profit. but there’s no specific movie or music album that changed public perception of those forms of art, instead they were recognized as art gradually throughout decades. this isn’t true for video games.

unlike film and unlike music, video games were invented for the sole purpose of making money. and i can’t really be mad about that, there’s not a lot of meaningful art one could produce using an atari, or original nintendo.

back to undertale, i’m not calling it the first video game created for the purpose of being art. games like yume nikki, and other early 2000s/late 90s games probably hold that title. but undertale was likely the first popular game that was created like that.

undertale, a low budget game made almost entirely out of recreation, funded by community interest outgrew multi-million dollar games out of sheer quality. it showed a generation of people, my generation of people, that games could be more than just a product. and that’s kinda cool i think.
