#I just think the themes and symbolism of this show are so cool
Text
Thinking about baseball in Stranger Things and its possible use as a symbol for traditional masculinity. How both Will and Billy have baseball pushed on them by their fathers and they reject it. And how Steve’s signature weapon is a baseball bat, and this possibly symbolizing that he is in touch with his masculinity but it isn’t forced on him, and he never uses it against other people.
I might be reaching on this, but it just kind of popped into my head. Feel free to add on if y’all have any additional thoughts

Obsessed with the use of the sunset in this scene. In fairytales the stories end with our heroes living happily ever after and riding out into the sunset. I think the sunset here plays on that theme, both Lucy and Maximus have reached the goals they had at the start of the show: Lucy found her father and in a few scenes Maximus is about to become a knight of the brotherhood yet their original goals are the opposite of what they wanted. The images of rubble and destruction in front of the sunset reflect the broken state of our protagonist’s hopes and dreams and the destruction being lit by an idealistic symbol of a sunset shows how the dreams that our protagonists had were built on lies and reveals the corruption behind what they thought was everything. And yet within all that destruction they’ve found each other, two sides of the same coin. It’s just so cool I love fallout

The thing is, Paxton was a great first boyfriend for Devi but it was never meant to be. He represents a different Devi, the high school part of her that wanted to fulfill dreams for external validation. Dreams that she has simply outgrow and she can allow herself to admit that now because her dreams have evolved. In another life, one in which Devi didn’t idealize him, maybe they could’ve worked but Devi was not in love with Paxton. She was attracted to a romanticized idea of him. That’s always been the problem with their relationship, the fact she always saw him as a symbolic dream, her rise to popularity — a thing she thought would give her the self love and normalcy she craved. Once she dated him, lost him, got over him, got to do some evolving herself, and was able to date outside of her bubble, her feelings for him weren’t there anymore simply because they were not longer under those rose colored lenses. She was able to recognize what has been there the whole time. Devi wasn’t longing for Paxton. Not in the ways she has longed for Ben, because the Paxton she wanted was someone she made up in her head. And Ben has always been the real deal for her. Her nemesis, her academic rival, her friend, her ex, her boyfriend. Devi, just like Paxton, deserve someone that makes you feel all the emotions, all the stomach knots and that crazy passion.
As Devi said, Paxton was a good boyfriend, but a much better friend to her. I like their closure. I like that they were able to cherish the influence in each other's lives while moving into new things for them. Things that are better suited for what they want from life. Not all relationships are meant to be and that doesn't diminish it.
Then there’s Ben. If anything showed this season is that she loves him irrevocably, with all his good thing and bad qualities too. And Ben despite all his dumbness this season, he loves Devi. There's no one else for him. He could date all the cool girls and Devi would still be the one for him. They’re the type of love Trent described on Season 3. “We rile each other up and then we love each other.” Ben and Devi are soulmates. They fit in a way that they appreciate each other's drive, weirdness and unattractive qualities. Devi is so herself with him and Ben was never a fantasy, he was a very tangible person that has a lot of flaws and a lot of that grow (for her and Ben) had to be individual before coming together. And they'll continue growing together.
The romantic themes of the show have always been very clear. It's about what Devi thinks she needs to be normal vs the things she will realize she wants and fullfills her. She got all of the things she wanted in the pilot, the difference is that pilot Devi asked for those things to satisfy an external filter but she not longer craves that because she has grown. Devi ended the show happy and fulfilled with her life, in her dream school, comfortable with herself, her culture. Devi could've perfectly ended up alone and that would have been totally okay too but Devi loves love and I'm happy she got exactly that.

venus if she was awesome
speedpaint and more thoughts under the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
venus has always been one of my favorite characters, though i feel her design is pretty underwhelming with a lot of wasted potential. this is kind of a redesign, kind of my own personal headcannon, and kind of how i imagined venus in my head as a kid.
this is supposed to be my version of g1 venus, more similar in facial features and keeping the straight hair. i absolutely love her new hair and face in g3 but im hesitant to call the new outfit an improvement. both g1s outfit and g3s outfit are bad in their own ways. i dont want it to seem like im shitting on the new design. again i think the face sculpts, hair, and body types of g3 are so awesome. its great to see more diversity being included in the designs. i just decided to go with g1 venuses look because thats the venus i grew up with
i definitely took some inspiration from g3s outfit for this design. i like the idea of it but the execution is just not great, not to say her original outfit is any better. i feel like out of all of tge original monsters she was the one with the most waisted potential. i love her personality and the abilities she has but the way she was styled has always bothered me.
in the movies shes described as “eco-punk” which is SUCH a cool style to go with a plant monster character. i just feel like the “punk” in “eco-punk” was never really represented in her outfits. i personally love punk music and clothing; ive been an active member in my local diy scene for many years and i love seeing all the outfits people put together.
i thought i would give her an outfit that shows off a couple of my personal favorite staples of punk style. big chunky leather boots with lots of straps and buckles. kept the shoe mouths from the original because they cool as hell. lots of leather, studs, spikes. i gave her denim cutoff shorts inspired by her gen 3 outfit, same with the torn black top. punk style has a big focus on comfort, practicality, and making things yourself. i imagine she cut a pair of old pants into shorts, roughly cut her “undead kennedys”band shirt tank into a crop top, and probably repurposed the remaining fabric. i also totally didnt draw this whole thing as an excuse to use that pun. i included asymmetrical leg accessories, with one fishnet stocking and one torn up sock. i also feel like she repurposed these, continuing to wear her old torn up socks instead of just throwing them out. i gave her a big chunky studded belt matching one of her cuffs with a recycling symbol belt buckle. i feel like it communicates an important aspect of her personality just at a glance, plus i just love big belt buckles. lastly i added piercings because 1. theyre cool and 2. i for some reason remembered her having an eyebrow piercing but i guess she never had one.
i mostly kept her body and hair the same. changed her ears and hair color slightly but thats just personal preference. i decided to make the vines on her body look more like tattoos instead of being 3d. i imagine she can make them grow into real vines, but when shes not using her powers theyre just flat against her skin. gave her a facial expression that made her look a little more unhinged. she might only do things for the good of the earth but she can still mind control people at will.
i wish i leaned a little bit more into the plant theming but im overall still super happy with how this came out. maybe ill made more monster high redesigns in the future

DPS: Charlie’s Symbolism
Tumblr media
Conformity and the dangers of it are a major theme throughout Dead Poets Society and Charlie Dalton is a direct representation of this. Charlie’s character can be simply defined as “the bad boy” but to film whores like me, he’s so much more than that. Charlie is a symbol for free thinking which becomes increasingly evident as the film plays out.
The first time we see Charlie give in to Keating’s teachings, he tears out a page from his textbook. Charlie is the first one to do so which shows how eager he is to break the rules and think for himself. He is a fiercely independent person and aims for nothing less than total control of himself and his mind. Keating tunes in to this as he encourages the boys to savour language and to live their true lives; a message which Charlie takes to heart.
Charlie is seen to be in his own world throughout the course of the film and it is most prevalent in the courtyard scene. In this scene, Keating encourages each student to find his own way of walking. Charlie simply refuses to walk and this can be easily brushed off as laziness and arrogance. But under a microscope, we can see that Charlie is proving Keating’s point to perfection. Charlie’s stride (or lack thereof) consists of him moving at his own pace which is seen to be standing still. By trying to seem cool, he has exactly proved Keating’s lesson useful; he has found a way of moving that suits him regardless of what other people are saying or doing.
Charlie’s independence shines through the brightest in this scene as he is no longer a lazy, arrogant student, but someone who has found comfort in himself and is able to express his way of walking without feeling peer pressures. “Swim against the stream” Keating says throughout this lesson; whilst Charlie may not be moving at all, he is actively swimming against the stream of his classmates as he is being his own person.
Conformity is shown in this scene via the class of boys all walking around the courtyard. Granted they are all finding their own way of moving. But, Charlie’s lack of movement illustrates Keating’s point better than any walk going on in the yard as he is being his own person and this is a lesson Charlie carries with him right until his final moments.
~
Charlie is so much more than just an arrogant, lazy student and I will defend him until the day I die. I am so SICK of Charlie slander

AITA for headcanoning deadnames for trans characters for symbolism purposes?
im a trans guy (minor if it matters) who's been a fan of this one show for a little over a year. none of the characters are canonically trans, but there's a lot of trans allegories to be drawn from the material if you're me or my mutuals at least. the two main characters are both male and i ended up developing an au where they're both explicitly transmasc as a way for me to just explore trans themes in an alternate narrative. i haven't begun writing it yet but definitely plan to once i feel like it's solidly locked in my brain, and i've been sharing snippets & concepts every so often.
part of this was thinking of how they would've chosen their current names, and name symbolism got me considering what they would've changed them away from as well. one character i thought could've initially been named after his mother so i can draw contrasts between the two, and the name i decided on for her has a meaning that highlights her relationship with her father (and the character's relationship with his father in turn); it's also the name of the character's daughter figure in the show. a lot of the other main character's backstory kind of revolves around his dead sister, so i thought by making his deadname that sister's name then i could turn that into an allegory about transness and childhood and sibling death (and sororicide but we don't have time to unpack all that). i don't plan on ever explicitly referring to the characters by their deadname in the narration, except maybe in an ironic tone, but i think it would be cool to sort of sprinkle in references as subtext to just give the readers something more to chew on.
the thing is i've seen posts around talking about how nice it is to make trans characters/headcanons without once considering their deadnames, or how weird it is for people to consider them, and i definitely agree with the sentiment; one of the biggest goals for many trans people is for their past selves to be completely irrelevant, and i feel a bit guilty for perpetuating something so painful for the general community.
but i still don't think i'm an asshole in any way since these are literally just characters and obviously i'm not going around talking about real people's deadnames or anything. i just don't want to make people uncomfortable/trigger dysphoria if they find someone talking about deadnames for a trans charactsr they're attached to (i've definitely had that happen myself when reading trans fics, enough that i had to stop reading, and i don't know how you'd even tag for something like that). if the general gut reaction to this ask is negative then i'll probably consider just not talking about the deadnames unless someone asks about it, since they're not crucial to the plot at all, just some uhh not so fun tidbits.
anyway sorry this is so long for something i feel like might be a non-issue that i'm overthinking. if you somehow guessed the fandom have a chocolate 🫀 if you're one of my few mutuals who knows who i am from the details of the au then um pretend you didnt see this post.
What are these acronyms?

OKAY SO!
Diares Rewrite - Divine Relics And Their Warriors
Tumblr media
I (added one) AND REDESIGNED THE DIVINE RELICS!!!
This was mainly done for one because I don’t really like the many of the original designs tbh- AND TWO! I wanted to put effort into the symbolism behind the shapes and gems, because symbolism makes me happy, and I like over analyzing things 😌
This one is going to be a long one, so I’m gonna go ahead and put a cut here, lol
FIRST OFF!
Irene (Aphmau)- Purple Diamond
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Irene’s relic is based off of the purple diamond! One of the most rare gemstones and a sign for nobility. Irene, being the head of the warriors, slides into this role, as well as the theming of pride and spirituality, for, obvious reasons.
This one didn’t really get a redesign since it’s so iconic
Enki (Travis) - Lapis
Tumblr media
Besides wisdom being a key tenant of Enki’s divinity, I thought this worked a lot with Travis and the storyline I’m planning to put him through.
From someone who flirts to hide their their own feelings and thoughts, to someone who is more open and an advisor of sorts. I view Travis as someone who is genuinely very smart and always listening and adapting his actions and words to what people want. The conclusion to his story would be to put a focus on him learning to do what he wants, and to being more genuine and open. To learn that his not just what he can do for others, he’s not just his fathers jailer. That these things are great and all, but that him just being himself is all that really matters
I kept this pretty much the same as the old design again since it looks cool and also I think having the two little gems bracketed leans into the “keeper” title. Especially with the people of their line being all about keeping the demon warlock/evil forces sealed away.
Shad (Aaron) - Ruby
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lets be soooo for real, the story tells itself. From the past hurts, to martyrdom, all the way to being protective of family and having a distorted veiw of one’s self. Shad and Aaron both fit all of these to a T
Annnndddd for the shape I took inspiration from this Slavic symbol!
Tumblr media
Like…. Fire…… war……… going through shit….….. also the whole “child” thing!? What started his whole downfall was his daughter being turned into a relic. This relic. To be exact.
I get to be a little devious. As a treat >:3c
Esmund (Garroth) - Pink Garnet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok so, the name obviously matches but omg I swear I didn’t realize until much later XDDD
Funny coincidences aside, I thought the themes of loyalty, devotion, consistency, etc. really match him and the stability that he brings to those around him. Not to mention the whole “used to ward off evil“ blah blah blah. AS WELL AS the part where it says that it’s believed through being cut and polished (put through hard times) are when a garnets ability truly shines through. Showing how before he was nothing but a cog in his father’s wheel until he went through adversity and re made himself!
I wanted this to have the general shape shield as well as include the reoccurring shape I put in Garroth’s redesign!
AND I CANT PUT MORE THEN 10 PICTURES PER POST SO ILL REBLOG WITH THE REST RIGHT HERE

Fighting for good, one widow bite at the time: Black Widow's cultural impact
Tumblr media
Critics scoff when I call the Black Widow movie a favorite, but hear me out. It deserved a better release window, maybe at an earlier time, when things would've been viewed differently. Sure, it doesn't rise up what it could've been, leaving so much lingering dreams in the hearts of us, fans. So much potential remains untapped, so many questions unanswered... but Natasha Romanoff? She rises above it all. If you doubt her power, think again, and as I said, hear me out.
Black Widow, the assasin with steely eyes that hide and protect a heart of gold, has transcended the screen to become a cultural icon. From her first appereance in the MCU in Iron Man 2 (2010) to Black Widow (2021), she truly went through a lot, took us with her, and thaught everyone some lessons on the way.
Shattering the mold of the damsel in distress: She's no sidekick, she's a strategist and a fierce fighter. She is a vital member of the Avengers, that's a fact we saw in the 2012 movie. After all, how many characters can you name that tricked the God of Mischief? Nat didn't only do it exceptionally, she is the first we saw doing this on screen.
Reclaiming Narrative: Unlike many superheroes defined by singular origins, Black Widow carried the trauma of a dark past, manipulated by the Red Room, a notorious spy program. Her movie explored this narrative, acknowledging the exploitation and abuse she endured. This resonated with survivors of violence and abuse, offering validation and representation. Her journey of breaking free from her past resonated on a broader level, highlighting themes of resilience, empowerment, and overcoming hardship. Furthermore, she hasn't always been a hero, an avenger. "Regimes fall everyday. I tend not to weep over that, I'm russian" and "I've got red in my ledger. I'd like to wipe it out" show how she's not just using the power she already has, but has the power to change as well. This isn't about brute force, it's about internal struggle and choosing to become a better version of herself despite her history.
Sisterhood and Solidarity: Black Widow's story wasn't solely focused on herself. In "Black Widow," she teams up with other women who share similar experience, even if at first this doesn't seem to work, indoctrinated as they are in the Red Room programme. This depiction of female solidarity resonated with audiences, particularly feminist movements advocating for women's support networks and collective action.
Representation Matters: Black Widow's portrayal as a skilled leader and strategist challenged existing portrayals of Russian characters in Hollywood. They are often depicted as villains or stereotypes, but her complex identity sparked conversations about diversity and representation within the superhero genre.
Defying stereotypes: As the sole original female Avenger, Black Widow carried a unique weight. She didn't need superpowers or a revealing suit — her determination and arsenal spoke for themselves. That's true power. I mean, in some situations she only had two cool firearms, but did better than Captain America with a vibranium shield! I also love how her costume evolved over time, prioritizing functionality over sexualization. Ditching the impractical neckline in her solo movie? A much-needed win! It shows that Black Widow commands respect through her actions, not her body.
Her impact and importance punches like her combat skills, if you ask me.
So, the next time you see the Black Widow, remember, she's more than just a character. She's a symbol of strength, resilience, and the unwavering human spirit. Thanks for being a constant source of inspiration, Nat ❣️

🌅Pac 18+: How Do Your Next Partner Feel About You Romantically?
Take a moment to inhale and exhale these are only three piles. Remember this is a general reading. This is about how they feel about you romantically and what's going on between you and your partner. Enjoy 💋💋😭
Tumblr media
Pile 1: Your partner is going to be secretly seeing you. If some of y’all okay with that. They would like to keep things private with you. I feel that romantically they'll be gentle and sweet to you in private but sometimes when they are in private they act all differently in public. I heard “They aren't ready yet” So they aren't ready to be out in public with you yet. Again, if some of y'all are okay with that then cool. Both of you will be hanging out with some rich folk. I heard They'll be introduced you to some of their friends and their business friends. I believe that some of y'all partners are good boys. Meaning that they are a soft daddy. They'll take care of you whenever you're feeling down. Or if you have a bad cold. They'll show you a whole other side of themselves that nobody else hasn't seen before. Ahh! A lot of their friends and family will be going to their house. They'll be quick to introduce you to their friends and family. I believe that their family will like you. Because they care about their Daughter or Son is happy. Honestly, feel that most of you won't be liking that secret shit so you might keep this partner as a friend zone. Just hang out with them. They'll have deeply romantic feelings for you. See! They'll be disappointed in hurting your feelings. They'll make amends with you. I think that they won't be shy about telling the world after you put them in a friend zone for a minute. I know it sounds wack as hell. Ahh! They'll love that you are such a businesswoman. You don't play! Very bossy you are. Yes! I think that some of you again will be private girlfriends. There's a difference between secret and private. Aww, I think that you two will have y'all first toast together. Cheers 🥂. If you two decide to get married, I believe that some of you will be a public wifey. Doing a lot of crazy shit. Haha 😂 love it. But they'll have a whole different perspective when y'all are married. But maybe, Gemini or Virgo season will be important around the summertime. Must be important. Maybe, they'll confess their romantic feelings for you. Or they'll tell the world that you guys are together. Maybe, some of you are going to have a Themed Wedding 💍 with them. Very cultural wedding. maybe, it is a family tradition thing. 🤷🏾‍♀️. You'll be dealing with a Pretty Boy who will fall in love with a spiritual woman. So you might be dealing with a partner who is a bad boy. Boo 👻! Lame but anyways, maybe, some of you guys are spiritual and they'll love that about you. I told you they'll make it official with you. They'll randomly give you a nickname. I heard them say “That's My Babe Right There.” Very Fliritous they are. Tattoos vibes maybe, they'll get your name tatted on their skin or a symbol of you that you like. They'll be possessive over you. Mister! Wooo 🌟🌟💋. You'll be dealing with a dominant partner. Maybe, that's the other side of them. They are trustworthy and they'll take care of their mistress. Making sure you have a smile on your face. Aww 😍😍. How romantic they are? Since some of you are a businesswoman you'll be modeling for your partner product. Maybe, they sell skincare creams or do magazine covers or whatever it is they would want your face on their product. Again, non-exclusive this is a low-key relationship they would want to keep it that way. But I do feel that most of you, again, would want a public relationship because again, I believe that you don't play that shit. I don't play that either. I think that you would want to keep things private but still tell the world you guys are together. They wouldn't mind that for most of you. Both of you will push each other buttons. Your partner will be stubborn and so will you. This is a new excitement love you and your partner. It's going to be worth exploring with them. They would want to nurture you and comfort you. Compromise with you. You two have an unbreakable bond. Nothing is going to change between you and them. I sense that they are deeply falling in love with you. I think that some of you will be enjoying Parenthood.
Think that some of you guys will be pregnant. Or want to get pregnant. I sense that maybe they have a breeding kink. They would want you to get pregnant for them.
Pile 2: They’ll feel that you are their starlight. I feel that before you get romantically involved with them or vice versa they might have a kid or just like a neighbor kid. I feel that whenever you guys into a bad argument it is going to be hard to let go of them and vice versa. I heard that they might want to rush to be in a relationship with you. That's how isn't going to work. Both of you are going to have to take y'all time. They feel that you two have a true purpose together. They are going to be the PUBLIC BOYFRIEND. Ah ah! They'll be telling everyone about it. They aren't afraid to express their emotions with you. They'll love that you are their girl. Even when the first time you meet them they'll be pulling you over. Whenever you guys are in a relationship too. Aww, they feel that you two are a match made in heaven 😇 together. You two will have a BBQ Night together. Bringing friends and family over and spending the nice holidays together. I think that your partner is a submissive man. If you guys get married they'll be the Gater Toss for any single man that's out there who's next in line to be married. 👏🏾👏🏾. Your gonna be such a good girl to them and they'll be so captive by your beauty, love, and how soft-spoken you are. They'll be crazy about you. I heard them say “ I am the luckiest man in the world whenever I am around you.” You two will have that old-fashioned type of love. First comes Love then comes marriage and then baby carriage. Lol 😂 Yay 👏🏾 I'm happy that's how they feel about you. Oh, so you might jump the broom while you married them. It's going to be the greatest memory you both will share. That is unforgettable. They'll be romantically involved with you. They'll be off the market with anyone who tries to come at your boyfriend. It's going to be love, at first sight, 🔦 with them. They'll tell their close friends. You are their hope and destiny. They would want a happy life with you. Oh! I see that you two will have very healthy communication. It won't be bad. Y’all won't be disrespectful to each other. Y’all will be honest with each other. Listening to each other, being respectful and kind to each other. Aww, your partner will feel that you made them who they are. Like you two bring out the best in each other.
Pile 3: This partner would want a commitment ceremony. It's a spiritual ceremony 🏆 they would want with you. They would want a union marriage. I can see them imagining y'all wedding together. A white string of fate. I am seeing a beach both of you were wearing all white and both knees were on the ground in the sand and I am seeing the White string tied around y'all wrists. Aww, not right now it isn't going to work out. I believe that it got something to do with you. Or right now there's still a healing needs to be with you guys. Once you guys heal enough, you two will say goodbye to old burdens Thank You, Next! Once your partner is involved with you they'll buy a promise ring. They'll be the private husband. Their friends are going to help them on their date with you. It might happen around Scorpio season. Or again, Scorpio season might be important for y'all. Okay, you'll be the private girlfriend. You would want to keep things between you and your partner. Okay, well they'll love that you have an ocean pussy. Addict to your kitty cat 🐯. I think that you two will have a secret wedding 👰 nobody isn't going to know anything. Ahh! They'll be the public boyfriend. Out and about in public with you. I think you would want to keep things secret between you and your partner. Both of you will be bringing that sexy back. Being confident and stepping into divinity. Destination wedding. Woah, maybe most of you would want a colorful wedding. I think that what's going to happen is that since your partner is so publicly involved with you. You might want to keep things private. I don't blame you guys. They might be a wild one. Telling everyone y'all business. See! I was right they have a Big Mouth 👄 they'll be telling business. This type of partner feels that let's share our love to the world. That's how they feel. I am getting these free-spirited vibes from them. So it might be a roller 🎢 with you two. Going round and round ⚪ with them. Maybe, you two will have baby fever. Would want to have kids one day. But romantically they feel that you might be close off but they feel you heavily. Like deeply feeling you. Aww

can you analyze the song Out for Love from Hazbin Hotel means to veggies character arc
It's the main theme of the entire series: people can only be redeemed through love.
Hard work, sure. Struggle, sure. Apologies and accountability, of course. But it's ultimately dependent on love.
The only way any lasting change of meaningful measure is made is through love. And yeah yeah it's simplified but it's the main message. Think about Sir Pentious. What is his last action?
Telling Cherri Bomb he loves her.
Tumblr media
His sacrifice amounts to nothing at all, but he died to save Cherri alongside all his friends/family in the hotel. It's not a coincidence that Sir Pentious says that line before making his sacrifice: the writers are telling us exactly what they want us to associate his getting into heaven with. Love.
But the song does have really cool Easter eggs so let's go:
I see you're driven by your detestation Your every step is stoked with animus You need a different type of motivation Or there's no way that you can handle this
Obviously, being driven by revenge doesn't work. However, there's a clever play on words here with "animus." See, Vaggie is Charlie's Jungian animus, and vice versa. The anima (or animus) is, inJungian theory, the masculine within the feminine and the feminine within the masculine. The goal is to align with your animus.
We see that in Vaggie and Charlie's respective attitudes and outfits--again, this is simplistic, but as a design choice it was deliberate. Vaggie, the more aggressive one, dresses far more feminine. Charlie, the princess who sings her heart out, dresses in suits. They're each others' animus.
I know you're thirstin' for vengeance, Vaggie You're out for blood But you'll only stand a chance if you're out for love
Out for love, love Think of who you care about, protect 'em and be Out for love, love You're gonna fight without gloves, long as you're out for love
Vaggie actually always wears gloves, but fingerless ones, symbolic of how she's partially letting Charlie in but still keeping part of herself back. Except now the truth is out there.
Tumblr media
So in the final battle, it's fitting that she has new gloves. It's not practical to fight without them, but she has new ones to reflect her internal change.
Tumblr media
Fuel yourself with the fear of losin' That somebody who's your reason to live Harnеss your heart, and you can't help choosin' To fight with all you can give
She's also wearing a harness over her heart, literally taking Carmilla's words to heart. Plus Charlie's in a dress and Vaggie in armor, showing again integration following their reconciliation.
Out for love, love Think of who you care about, protect 'em and be Out for love, love You're gonna fight without gloves And when that push comes to shove Yeah, you just might rise above, long as you're out for love
If you're out for love you might rise above... to heaven, like Sir Pentious.
Tumblr media
Anyways continuing with my argument that Hazbin is actually theologically fascinating for Christians as a work, the focus on love also is very, uh, Biblically sound, considering 1 John says "God is love," and, well:
If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
So yeah. Literally angels might have power and be in "heaven," but without love, they are nothing. Which we see in the end when Adam gets stabbed by literally the lowliest at the hotel.

I already talked about, like, the Obvious Symbolism of Simon reaching his lowest point literally dressed like the Ice King and then gradually gets back to his old outfit as he starts climbing out of his depressive spiral, at least somewhat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it’s also really interesting, maybe even more interesting, how Fionna’s outfit has been gradually shifting and changing with basically every adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My first thought was that it really shows Fionna coming into her own as a character. The more she grows and also the more character development she gets - the more the audience learns to see her as more than just Girl Finn - the more her outfit moves away from just being a slightly girlier version of Finn’s classic look and into being its own thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because Fionna is her own character.
But my second thought was more about the first time Fionna’s classic outfit got an update in this series.
Tumblr media
This wouldn’t really relate to my first reading, since it just kinda makes her outfit closer to Finn. But it does relate to the most important Theme that her character arc revolves around - Fantasy versus Reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fionna starts out the story interacting with the idea of magical adventure and heroism via the lens of fantasy. She compares everything to video games and just thinks about everything in terms of it being cool and fun and she literally tries to chase down a person from her dreams.
And her mindset was probably only reinforced by discovering she was literally created to be the Main Character in God’s little fantasy universe literally created out of self-indulgence for his silly little stories.
Tumblr media
And because of that, she starts out the story with a huge Protagonist-Centered-Morality blind spot where she can’t recognize when she and Cake are in the wrong
Tumblr media
And she rushes into action and violence just thinking it’s ‘cool’
Tumblr media
And, like, in general acting without thinking of the consequences.
Tumblr media
And at basically every step of this adventure, these kinda actions clashed against the reality of her situation. And it all started when she pointed out to her own creator that the outfit he designed for her is cute - but extremely unrealistic for an adventurer like herself
Tumblr media
And from there we move to Fionna experiencing more and more of the harsh consequences of assuming everything should fit into her fantasies of heroes and villains
Tumblr media
And that she should punch first and ask questions later
Tumblr media
And in general that it’s always better to trust her guts over her head.
Tumblr media
And with every one of her experiences, the bright and adorable outfit that is a reminder of her origin as God’s Most Self-Indulgent OC gets tweaked in more way - turning it into something that looks a lot more, for the lack of a better word, gritty. And also turning it further and further away from the outfit of her own literal fantasies.
Tumblr media
And all of these horrible traumatic experiences and the general dangers of the magical and very different world she’s in have all weathered down Fionna’s original optimism and eagerness and brashness that originally defined her and turned her terribly overprotective and scared instead. And it really reminds of how Simon’s own trauma weathered him down.
Turning him from a kind man with a passion for adventure and the fantastical and a powerful parental instinct to a miserable jerk who aches for mundanity and made a little girl cry
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Until he got to his very lowest point.
Tumblr media
So I’m guessing next up for Fionna is getting to see her regain some of her old identity that the Trauma has been tearing away at - getting back some of that cheerfulness and brash attitude and adventurous spirit. Because while it has put herself and her teammates and others in serious troubles - it’s also been a huge help at other times (especially as she's a good counterbalance to Simon ‘slow but dependable’ Petrikov)
She needs to find the balance, learning the lessons from her multiverse adventure without losing all the things that made her Fionna Campbell in the first place.
And I wonder if this development is gonna be paralleled with a return of some of the more ‘classic’ elements of her look - or if her outfit is instead going to diverge farther?

anthroponymy in the bear
Apologies if someone's done this already, but I've been thinking a lot about the names of the characters in The Bear, and how almost nothing in this show is accidental. It's led me to wonder whether the names chosen are also intentional and if they can tell us anything about the characters and their journeys.
Tumblr media
Firstly, we have Michael. The name is derived from a Hebrew phrase meaning ‘who is like god’ (often posed as a question). It’s fitting in my opinion. His character certainly is a godlike presence, his influence and love felt but not seen in The Beef. As the eldest sibling, he’s presented as a leader, and Carmy and Richie worship his vision.
There’s a creation aspect with Mikey. He plays god from beyond the grave, literally breathing life into The Bear through the money he stashed in the tomato cans - we have him to thank for its establishment.
The tomatoes remind me of the bible story of the feeding of the five thousand. In this miracle, Jesus is able to feed five thousand hungry people from just a few loaves of bread and a few fish. In ep 1.08, a humble tin of tomatoes - just as much a symbol of modesty as a loaf of bread - is opened to reveal a wad of cash. From this money comes The Bear, which hopefully will go on to feed just as many hungry mouths, if not more!
Interestingly, 'michelin' is a diminutive of 'Michel', an alternate spelling of Michael. I wonder if there's a connection there? Maybe the key to The Bear earning its Michelin star will lie with Michael? A recipe of his, or a piece of advice he gave Carmy? (Sidetracking, but I just think it’s cool!)
Next, we have Carmy, who’s full name is Carmen. I’ve looked at a few sources, and there seem to be a couple of different meanings for his name. The Latin meaning comes from the word for a song or a poem. The Hebrew meaning is garden or vineyard.
‘Song or poem’ to me reflects Carmy’s creative nature, his love of cooking and drawing. ‘Vineyard’ is interesting, considering that Donna is an alcoholic, and that as far as we know, Carmy is either sober or drinks very little.
Carmen is also a gender neutral name. For me, one of the significant themes of the show is masculinity, and how different ideas of masculinity are warring with each other. To me, Mikey and to an extent Richie represent one particular masculine ideal, one that’s maybe a bit toxic. Carmy meanwhile is not painted as the stereotypical masculine guy. Richie often insults Carmy’s masculinity, jeering at his culinary training, being homophobic, making fun of his lack of experience with women.
There’s so much I could say about this dichotomy, even right down to the dishes that are associated with each character. Richie’s idea of The Beef serving ‘food of the working man’. The sandwiches - their red meat fillings. Mikey’s spaghetti, in its simplicity, its earthiness, its history as a staple food of the working class.  To me, it’s a masculine, down to earth dish, very at odds with the fancier, more elegant dishes we come to associate Carmy with.
Then we have characters such as Luca and Marcus - both of whom are associated with baking. You don’t have to be a genius to know that baking is seen as a feminine art. Luca and Marcus arguably don’t fit the macho man ideal either - both of them being depicted as a lot more gentle, calm, and creative types.
Next - Sydney. It’s an Old English name, and there are a few different interpretations of it that I could find. One is ‘wide meadow’ or ‘wide water meadow’.
When Syd breezes into The Beef in ep 1, she’s literally a breath of fresh air. She’s a meadow! Her vision for what the restaurant could be, both in terms of the food served and the way the kitchen could be run (i.e. mutual respect, a smooth chain of command, no psycho bosses) is an idealistic vision, a utopia, a garden of Eden type image.
This brings me to the link with Carmy’s name:
Remember how one of the meanings of Carm’s name was garden? In my opinion, this similarity only reinforces the writer's intentions for us to see Syd and Carmy as kindred spirits. Gardens, meadows… both peaceful, calm, beautiful places. To me, it tells us they’re each other’s peace. It also tells us if they learn how to work together, they can create that ideal vision for the restaurant that they both crave.
Another interpretation of Syd’s name is that it means island or island dweller. This brings to mind the phrase ‘no man is an island’, which to me perfectly summarises her character’s central struggle. The phrase means that humans need each other. We need support, and we can’t do things alone. I think Sydney is shown as someone who can be prone to bottling things up, and maybe finds it difficult to ask for help and to be vulnerable. She’s not shown as having many family and friendship connections, and we see a lot of scenes where she’s alone - eating in restaurants, on the train, cooking at home. In that sense, she is a bit of an island, and I hope we see her become able to rely on others a little more in seasons to come (and hopefully Carmy gets his act together enough for her to trust him to be her support!).
Next up: Jimmy. Short for James, a derivative of the Hebrew Jacob, it means ‘supplanter’. A supplanter means someone who takes the place of something else, like a usurper. Now, in ep 2.06, Jimmy and Donna’s dynamic was a little suspect, and I think a lot of people would agree that we’re supposed to infer something was going on there, with Cicero figuratively and perhaps literally taking the place of Bear senior. My theory is that there was an affair, and that Jimmy is actually Mikey’s father. JAW and Abby Elliott look pretty alike I’d say, while John Bernthal has quite different features. Was this intentional? Who’s to say, but I think there’s definitely a case to be made for there being two different fathers. Equally, Mr Bear could be Mikey’s dad, while Jimmy could be Nat and Carm’s true father - he has their lighter hair and eyes, so who knows!!
In Genesis, Jacob supplants his twin brother by buying his birthright. In the show, Jimmy attempts to buy the restaurant, which of course once belonged to Carmy’s dad. Although the show doesn’t give us the full story of the pair, we gather that Jimmy and Bear Sr. were old friends who were almost more like brothers, until a feud ruined their relationship. Interesting for sure!
Next is Tina. Short for Christina, which means ‘follower of Christ’. Her last name, Marrero, is interesting. Deriving from Spanish, it means stone-breaker or hammer, reflecting her strength of character. She’s a single mother, an immigrant, and has been working in male-dominated kitchens with all these shitty, angry men for years. As far as we know, she was the only woman at The Beef pre-Syd. She dealt with Mikey and Richie’s shit for years. You’d have to be pretty fucking tough.
On the other hand, T is so warm and kind underneath it all and seems able to penetrate through the other character’s exteriors relatively easily - Richie, Carmy, Ebra, Syd. They can all be pretty grumpy, but they all have SUCH a soft spot for Tina and only Tina. She’s the stone breaker to their stony surface! 💖🥰💖🥰
Okay those are the main ones I wanted to talk about, but here’s a few more in brief:
Richie: short for Richard, which means strong or brave ruler/leader. In the final episode, we see Richie leading expo and doing a great job. He’s finally living up to his name - literally finding his purpose.
Donna: means lady in Italian. Madonna, or ‘my lady’ is another name for Mary, Jesus’ mother. The ‘mother of victory’ referenced in the prayer that Carm, Nat and Richie say before the soft open is the same Mary. Whilst Donna definitely doesn’t share many characteristics with Mary, I think the comparison is useful in showing the bear kids’ conflicting view of their mother. They of course still love her and crave her love and her blessing for the restaurant in return.
Natalie: means ‘birth of the lord’, literally, ‘Christmas’. There could be a connection here to the Fishes episode, which takes place on Christmas.
Pete: short for Peter, it means rock. When Jesus made the disciple Peter the first Pope, he said, ‘on this rock I build my church’. Pete is Nat’s rock and I think that’s beautiful!!!!!!
Ebra: short for Ebrahim, an alternate spelling of Abraham, which means 'father of many'. He’s a father figure for The Bear!
I know there are a couple I've left out from the main cast, one being Marcus, whose name means 'follower of Mars', the Roman god. I'm still figuring out whether there's a significance there - I'm sure there could be. Maybe I'll do a part two with the rest of the characters!
Anyways I just think it's neat how fitting a lot of the names are... and I really don't think a lot of them were accidental!
Pls feel free to add on and/or correct me if I got anything wrong!

Happy Lockwood & Co. Big Bang!!! :D I had the absolute pleasure of collaborating with @The_Dreamer_Half_Alive (on Ao3 :) on her fic for the @lockwoodandcobigbang2023 event; set post TEG, it’s truly so lovely and heartwarming, and I had so much fun doing a piece for it! We very much hope you enjoy :)
Link to the fic!!!! (the horror of the night melt away) under the warm glow of survival of the day
(Closeups below the cut :D) (because I ended up making it too wide to be easily seen in full lol) (plus ~artistic commentary~)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(SPOILERS FOR FIC CONTENT)
Okay, so I tried to put a bunch of little easter eggs from the fic and just in general in here, so if you’re interested:
Alright, to start off, I was generally very inspired by them getting a record player; I thought it was very sweet, and I loved the idea of them finally getting to relax and hang out in the library (the lack of chairs, I know; I couldn’t figure out how to put them in without blocking people lol) and locklyle dancing, with the record player on in the background, so that’s what I took as the basis of the scene!!
We had discussed that the characters were kind of a combo of both show and book versions, so I tried to add a smattering and hints of both when doing their designs!
The record is, of course, an Ella Fitzgerald record as mentioned in the fic (the record drawn is her Souvenir Album)
Holly is wearing her engagement ring, and wearing shades of pink and cream because that’s what she wears at her wedding (although shifted in hue to better match the color scheme of the piece lol)
Everyone (minus Flo) of course has their white strands of hair (which is *always* one of my favorite details to draw)
Lucy and George bake in the fic, but I think I had just read the Christmas mini story when I was doing my thumbnail for this, so Kipps ended up being the one bringing in baked goods; however, the baking mitts are orange and monogrammed with George's initials because I couldn't let that slip by, could I?
I wasn't quite sure what to put Flo in, because in the books she never takes off her boots or puffer jacket, but I wanted to throw in some sign that she was living at 35 Portland Row and becoming closer to all of them, (and her close relationship with George,) so I let her keep the boots, but traded the puffer jacket in for one of George's plaid shirts :)
The chess game also made it in because of the Christmas short story, lol
Lucy's blue star jacket!! When I read the fic, I was planning from the start to have her wearing the jacket, so of course it made it in :) I wasn't really sure what style it should be, though, so I ended up with kind of an odd mishmash of designs, but I think it turned out working alright!
The sapphire necklace, because, of course
I adore that Lockwood wears his pink socks throughout the entire show (well, most of the time they're the pink ones ;) so I wanted to include them (and then gave Lucy blue ones to match :)
The chipped blue mugs that Lockwood brings to Lucy for her tea after she wakes up from nightmares are on the bookshelf, and I couldn't find a way to directly include the Earl Grey tea they have, but I made the tea bag tags grey in honor of it
The green glow is the ghost lamp outside because if I can find a way to incorporate cool glows in my art, I will (and also on a more narrative-driven note, symbolizing the past danger they've been through and how some of it is definitely still present, but they have each other to heal with and finally be able to have some simple fun with, and are now curled up in the safety and comfort of 35 Portland Row :)
And finally, a big theme of the fic is them healing and building a happy life together, so I just wanted them to all be happy for once, and hence I put in my best efforts to draw them as such :)

What do you think about You Don't Know and other Hazbin Hotel songs?
Hi!
I love the songs in Hazbin Hotel and You Didn't Know is an absolute banger!
Tumblr media
It is also one of my favourite songs when it comes to symbolism and themes. So here it comes a short analysis.
You Didn't Know explores the themes of ignorance, knowledge and questioning, as it is introduced by this exchange:
Charlie: Wait… none of you know what gets someone into Heaven? Sera: This questioning stops now. We know when a soul arrives, we know when they pass divine judgment, it is our job to ensure these souls are safe.
The angels have no idea why a soul is considered worthy of Heaven, which angers Charlie. Still, Sera insists it is not their place to know and that they simply must accept divine judgement. However, this idea is questioned by both Emily and Charlie:
Emily: But she was right, Sera She showed us a soul can improve He saw the light, Sera Checked all the boxes that you said would Prove a person deserves a second chance Now we turn our backs, no second glance?
Charlie: It's not fair, Sera Vaggie: Careful, Charlie, keep a cool head Charlie: No! Don't you care, Sera? That just because someone is dead It doesn't mean they can't resolve to change their ways Turn the page Escape infernal blaze
The two princesses point out how unfair the current system is and put some pressure on the angels. However, they too are still naive, which is why they get called out themselves.
By Sera:
Sera: It's not as simple as you think Not everything is spelled in ink
Sera: I 'm sure you wish it could be so But there's a lot that you don't know
And by Adam:
Adam: Gotta say, I can't wait to Come down and exterminate you! Emily:What are you saying? Let me get this straight You go down there and kill those poor souls? Charlie: You didn't know?
Adam: Don't you act all high and mighty Did you ever think your little girlfriend might be a liar? Vaggie: Don't, Adam, please! Adam: What's the fuss? Why hide the fact that you're an angel Just like us?
Emily and Charlie are ignorant when it comes to their loved ones. Specifically, they ignore the role of both Sera and Vaggie in the exterminations. They don't know Sera and Vaggie's shadows:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still, this song has the characters' secrets come out, so that they can be dealt with. In future episodes we see Hell and Charlie do so, whereas Heaven and Sera refuse to. This is why season 1 ends with Hell's victory.
Still, why does Sera refuse to accept the truth? What is it that scares her so much?
Sera: They were uprising, Emily. It is my position as the head Seraphim to protect our people at all costs.
Sera fears the order might break, which could result in her loved ones suffering. In this sense, she is similar to Carmilla:
But if anyone knew, then all of Hell would rise to war And who's to say who'd survive the fray? I might lose the ones that I was killing for
That said, even if it is only temporary, Heaven's order is indeed lost throughout the song. This is shown by two visual motifs:
The metaphorical use of heights
The use of colors, especially blue and red
WHO HAS THE MORAL HIGH GROUND?
Tumblr media
The seating in the courtroom is organized, so that it mirrors the characters' perceived morality:
Sera and Emily, as Seraphims and judges are at the very top
The other high ranking angels are the jury, so they are just below the two seraphims
Adam, Lute, Charlie and Vaggie are the two parts debating, so they are below the judges and the jury. Still, they are not on the same level. Adam and Lute are above Charlie and Vaggie.
This arrangement shows that Sera has no intention to be a fair judge, as she has already decided the Exorcist Adam has the moral high ground on the Princess of Hell. He is an angel and she is a demon. He is the first virtuous soul and she is Lucifer's daughter. He embodies the status quo, while she is trying to change it. So, Sera has already decided to favor Adam over Charlie. In other words, the moral high ground highlights not morality, but the influence Heaven has over Hell. It is nothing more, but the embodyment of their power dynamic.
Despite this, as the song starts things change in multiple ways:
1- Emily steps down
Tumblr media
Emily empathizes with Charlie and gets down off the pedestal Sera has built for her. She is still above Charlie and Adam, but she invites the other angels to show mercy, to be just. This is because Emily strongly believes Heaven is a place where virtue and morality reign.
2- Adam and Lute look down on Charlie
Tumblr media
Adam and Lute make their case and claim Hell is forever:
Adam and Lute: Did you forget that "Hell is forever"?
As they sing this part, they stand on the magical orb and look down on Charlie. They have the upper hand and judge her and the other demons as creatures inferior to angels. At this point, though, Adam flies down to threathen Charlie:
Tumblr media
By doing so, he reveals the existence of the exterminations and shows that he himself is no different from a demon. So, Adam and Charlie are on equal footing.
3 - Emily reaches Charlie
Tumblr media
The reveal of the Exterminations shocks Emily, who reaches the floor to better look at the destruction Heaven is causing. Her idealistic vision of Heaven gets shattered, so she is forced to re-evaluate the system and the current order. She stops positioning herself as higher than Charlie and goes down to better see things from her perspective.
4 - Sera flies down
Tumblr media
Sera panics and hurries to Emily to convince her that what she has done is for the greater good. She is forced to step down and to confront the younger Seraphim on the floor:
Sera: You have to listen It was such a hard decision I wanted to save you, the anguish it takes to Do what was required
Still, Emily refuses Sera's explanation and calls her out:
Emily: To think that I admired you Well, I don't need your condescension I'm not a child to protect Was talk of virtue just pretension? Was I too naïve to expect you To heed the morals you're purveying?
As she does, she flies higher than Sera because she is showing more morality than her mentor:
Tumblr media
5- Charlie and Emily gain the moral high ground
Tumblr media
As Charlie and Emily sing together in anger and frustration, they jump on the magical orb. Their pose mirrors Adam and Lute's one, but their point is the thematical opposite:
Charlie and Emily: If Hell is forever, then Heaven must be a lie!
Adam and Lute claim "hell is forever", whereas Charlie and Emily answer that "if hell is forever, then heaven must be a lie". Not only that, but they say it looking down on Sera, who is supposedly the higher ranking angel and the judge.
Charlie starts the questioning at the very bottom, but in the climax she gains the upper hand. Sera should be at the very top, but in the end she is reduced to look up to the two girls from the floor.
The questioning starts as a farce and a demonstration of political power. However, Charlie's determination and Emily's sense of justice make it the real deal. Hypocrisy disappears and the truth becomes visible to everybody. Even if just for a moment.
6- Sera takes back control
Tumblr media
Sera uses Adam's reveal about Vaggie to re-assert order over the courtroom. She and Emily fly back to their seats and Sera is free to be the judge again. Her final decision is the one she was determined to make in the beginning:
Sera: I'm sorry… but this court finds that there is no evidence souls in Hell can be redeemed.
Sera refuses Charlie and Emily's pleas and goes back to the pre-established order.
RED DEVIL AND BLUE ANGEL
Charlie and Emily unmasking the truth about Heaven and Hell is highlighted also by the way red and blue are used throughout the song. In general, Hell and Heaven are color-coded. Hell is red and Heaven is blue. For example, Charlie and Vaggie wear red, whereas St Peter, Sera and Emily wear blue:
Tumblr media
Not only that, but Sera and Emily's wings have blue details and shades. Lucifer is a Seraphim too, but his wings are red inside, as he is the titular devil:
Tumblr media
That said, You Didn't Know breaks this color scheme to show how angels like Adam, Lute and Sera are behaving like devils. This clip of Sera makes it clear:
Tumblr media
Hell's flames are mirrored in her eyes and make her look scary, when she is trying to be reassuring. A stark contrast with the blue and gold idealized imagery Emily has of her:
Tumblr media
By the moment Charlie and Emily state their powerful come-back the colors are basically mixed. Just like the Princess of Hell (red) and the Youngest Seraphim (blue) stand together and share the same moral vision:
Charlie and Emily: If angels can do whatever, and remain in the sky The rules are shades of gray when you don't do as you say When you make the wretched suffer just to kill them again
Hell and Heaven are not red (black) and white (blue), but have shades (of gray). Just as Charlie and Emily sing this, the world around them changes to prove them right.
The two girls break the system and show clearly that:
Charlie is the one pursuing morality, as she is trying to protect people
Good and Evil are not so easily defined, as the angels behave like demons and demons show positive traits and virtues
Unluckily, this isn't enough to change things, as Heaven is stuck in their own rules:
Lucifer: Hohooo boy, Heaven, is not exactly as carefree as you might think. Yeah, they have rules, lots of rules, and they aren't very open minded as you'd hope.
A QUESTION TO BE POSED
The debate between Charlie and Adam is about the possibility or not to redeem souls in Hell. Deep down, though, it is really about something much more basic. Is it alright to question things? Every character has their own viewpoint on the matter:
Charlie: Well, if you know so much, what do you think it takes to get into Heaven?
Adam: Uhhh… well, uh… then why isn't he here then? Hm? Emily: Yeah, why isn't he here?
Lute and Adam: There's no question to be posed He's unholy, case closed
Charlie and Emily are genuinelly asking questions. They wanna know why some spirits end up in Heaven and why others do not. Adam and Lute, instead refuse to investigate things. Adam's question isn't real and it is just rhetoric used to prove a point. Lute directly states there is nothing to question. Charlie and Emily embody the theme, whereas Adam and Lute represent the anti-theme.
What about Sera? She is the negation of the negation, which is a thematic stance worse than the anti-theme. Charlie and Emily are ignorant, but want to know. Adam and Lute are in the dark, but they don't care to know.
Sera's sin isn't ignorance, though. It is knowledge:
Emily: Sera, tell me that you didn't know Sera: I thought, since I'm older It's my load to shoulder Emily: No!
She knows about the exterminations and she knows the system isn't fair. Still, she refuses to question it. Not only that, but she prohibits others to ask questions:
Sera: Please…. if you start to question… you could end up like Lucifer. FALLEN.
She is the judge of a questioning, but doesn't allow questions. This shows how hypocritical the whole situation is. How can there be a questioning, when one can't ask questions? And if asking questions is prohibited, then the final answer will never change:
Lucifer: Heaven never listens! They didn't listen to me, they won't listen to you!

So, I started thinking about a Kuina Lives + Strawhat Kuina AU specifically because of a paragraph on the wiki page. I was looking up info on Shimotsuki Village while I was taking down notes for a potential Pre-Canon ZoLu fic inspired by the live-action show.
Allegedly, the infamous 4kids dub CHANGED things so that Kuina didn't die, she was PERMANENTLY DISABLED to the point of being unable to pursue her dream. And my brain went: "?!" I see no reason why (aside from a few very extreme cases of disability) a disabled Kuina could not become a Strawhat pirate and go on adventures anyway! (Franky is a CYBORG who looks increasingly like a MECHA and Chopper's pills are BONKERS.)
Relevant quote: "Per standard policies, the 4Kids-dubbed anime censored her death, stating that she had been permanently injured by the friends of a man she'd defeated (and removing all scenes depicting her funeral or grave)." Which is driving my brain UP THE WALL with possibility when Kuina and Tashigi also supposedly both have names referencing flightless birds. The THEMES. The SYMBOLISM.
Personally, I still prefer Kuina becoming injured in an innocuous fall rather than having people directly responsible for her physical disability. The degree of her injury depends on what story that a person is individually writing. I see two potential ways forward (of many) that both interest me.
OPTION A: Kuina is physically disabled to the point of being unable to fight well generally, especially with swords. She uses a wheelchair and crutches to get around, and has some other lingering issues. So, like, she can definitely still whack people with a sword and shoot a gun, but Zoro is wielding Wado Ichimonji because Kuina feels she cannot do it justice. (But she's still supervising!!! She's Zoro's coach.)
Kuina's grandfather was a swordsmith, so in this case, she would end up in a smith, weapons expert, and quartermaster role for the Strawhats. She, Usopp, and Franky can be the Crafting Team! Ship maintenance crew! Kuina takes Merry's sinking nearly as badly as Usopp does.
OPTION B: Kuina has "mostly" recovered from her injury, which set her back for several years, but is still struggling. A dedicated female fighter on the Strawhat crew is VERY tempting as an idea. Monster quartet, yes? Yes! She's wielding Wado Ichimonji and Zoro is still searching for his own dedicated swords.
She could still be a swordsmith and quartermaster in this case! In either case, A or B, I think it might be cool to give Kuina a hook? (Kuina @ Crocodile: "Compensating for something, huh?") She could get other prosthetics or just super cool assistive devices as the story goes on with Chopper and Franky's help.
KUINA'S POTENTIAL ARCS: I do really like the idea of Kuina (if she can still fight with a sword) and Zoro moving forward together, neck and neck, for the title of World's Greatest Swordsman. I think it would be cool to come to a resolution that the title is more or less something that they can share? Like, only one of them can beat Mihawk in a "fair" duel, so that's an issue in the competition between them, but I do like the idea of the two of them going back and forth beating each other in duels, at the top of the world together.
Arguably, when Zoro sacrifices himself at the end of the Thriller Bark Arc, he has come to the resolution that he'll give up his dream for Luffy and the crew, where he gives up the last remnants of being self-centred and throws himself completely behind Luffy's philosophy of friendship and enjoying the journey. He still wants to be the World's Greatest Swordsman, but his crew comes first. I don't recall after this point any reckless moments of a similar nature to him stabbing himself in Orange Town when fighting Buggy's crew to prove a point. Zoro's recklessness culminates in sacrificing himself with purpose.
It does feel a little weak, but... Kuina could decide that she's comfortable in her own skills and doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. She KNOWS she's as good as Zoro is. She can declare herself the World's Greatest Swordswoman and let Zoro fight Mihawk. (They did probably flip a coin over it or something.) Maybe she never really wanted to be the World's Greatest, maybe she just wanted to live her life the way that she chose, and felt like becoming the World's Greatest was the only way of permanently shutting up every sexist jerk who has ever talked down to her. (They will never shut up. Sexist jerks will always find something to nitpick.)
ALTERNATIVELY: Kuina could have a heartbreaking and healing story about having to give up your dream because it's not physically possible anymore. Even if this is a story where she's still fighting as a swordswoman with Wado Ichimonji and is monstrously dangerous, maybe her physical disability prevents her from now fighting on Zoro's level, which really fucking sucks for her when she feels like she has so much to prove as a woman.
Shounen manga has always had an issue where the solution to some fights is that the protagonist just needs to "fight harder, yell louder, and believe in himself more", even when the protagonist is bleeding from everywhere. "One Piece" is fun because there are plenty of fights and problems where the protagonists succeed due to being genuinely clever, but there are other fights where it's all about a manifestation of willpower (sometimes literally). And this often works thematically.
I think Kuina would be interesting as a character for how she could contrast against Zoro, so I'm leaning towards giving her a very different story rather than making her Zoro 2.0 (Female).
For example, where Zoro is reckless, I think Kuina might be cautious, especially if she's been badly injured before and is still struggling. In flashbacks, she's open about her problems and anger to Zoro because he's her friend and also a safe target - he's an outsider / outlier in the dojo and she can beat him in a fight. In a martial school that probably demands some level of respectful behavior, Kuina might not display the same bravado and unhappiness to her father, who is also her teacher and responsible for the sexism that she's internalized.
If she's a swordswoman still, I don't know that she would challenge Mihawk at the Baratie. For one thing, it's STUPID. Zoro had to KNOW that he was nowhere near Mihawk's level and he's lucky that Mihawk had some level of honor and curiosity to spare him. If Mihawk had been a little more of an asshole, that would have been the end of Zoro's dream. He was really stupid there (affectionate, that's my boy). The smart thing to do is keep your mouth shut and live to challenge Mihawk another day, but I think Kuina would also hate herself for this kind of "cowardice".
Her personal struggle as a character might be with reserve and fear of risk, whether this culminates in her ultimately overcoming all obstacles and succeeding in her dream with the help of her friends, or in her giving up her dream due to a physical disability (or multiple physical disabilities) that is no fault of her own in favor of a new dream. You could try your best to combine all of these different elements into Kuina's arcs and abilities. There's a lot of possibility.

I have this overarching theory that this entire show, this entire thing is Blitzø building a new circus he can run to replace the one he burned down and be better than his father. Ever since The Circus and their conversation under the tree I’ve been mulling this over and the rest of the episodes kept giving me more in service of this idea. I haven’t read any interviews to this effect so no idea if this has already been discussed, apologies if so, but there’s a lot of little hints at this:
We got Moxxie and Millie doing acrobatics together in multiple episodes like C.H.E.R.U.B.S and Ozzie’s. Both of them love to perform, as a duo and separately.
Eventually we’ll get Barbie Wire on her tightrope once they make up.
Fizz the clown. He no longer works for Mammon after all.
Ozzy as a ringmaster. (His place even has a big ole circus tent right on top and he’s dressed the part.)
Stolas doing paperwork and admin because the absolute cutie loves words and contracts.
Octavia handling the Oddities and Curiosities section based on her taxidermy interests.
Verosika is an entertainer, singing dancing, etc. and I’m sure we’re getting more for her coming up.
Striker does knife and sharpshooter work.
Loona is a little harder since we haven’t been given a lot for her yet. Her role in the circus many became more apparent as the season moves forward. Based on what we have seen knife throwing could be a fit or magic since she does so much with the grimoire and has enough magic for a human disguise, something even Octavia who is actively being taught magic didn’t have. I don’t want to decide until she’s more fleshed out. ( Ive seen the reasoning for her limited role as being behind the scenes situations with the VA losing their partner but I’m not 100% sure on that.)
Even if it’s just symbolic or just a visual theme I love it. But I honestly kinda think it might be literal by the end? Blitzø didn’t want to be an assassin after all, he wanted to run a circus and have an office to do it from, showing he doesn’t even necessarily want to be IN the circus himself.
It would be such a cool way to go.
