Always had an idea of hw link having a daughter with Zelda, but it would’ve been a huge scandal if it was discovered cuz she needed to get married to some jerk prince or whatever since Hyrule fell apart after the war, and also cuz it was out of wedlock. So they kept their child a secret and Warriors eventually took care of her while Zelda continued on with her duties. She’s devastated cuz she wants to be close to her daughter but she doesn’t know that the queen is her mother. Link would tell her but she’s terrible at keeping secrets and people would DEF know that she’s not lying if she said it. So yeah, for some reason I like playing with these type of plots 💀💀
I didn’t mean to make her dress look like toon Link’s outfit but it’s cute idk

Hyrule Warriors & LU
Okay, so this whole thing is fueled by my desire to see HW stuff not only in relation to LU, but also in general.
I mostly see just Warriors, young Time, and Wind in these stories, with very brief mentions to other characters, mainly just Ravio, Midna, Marin, HW Zelda, and Impa. Don’t get me wrong, I love these characters, but there is a whole roster of other guys you can include as well and make them be more important-because they are???
Time and Wind aren’t the only ones from their time. Darunia and Ruto may be from the Adult timeline, but they are there, they are playable characters, and no one seems to mention them, like at all. Tetra, Medli, and King Daphnes are also playable characters and are there. Aryll is also there, she speaks for Toon Link.
Time and Wind are not alone, they can still see Warriors as a big brother figure, but that doesn’t mean you can just pretend that everyone around them just doesn’t exist. I’m hoping that in general, the people in the HW fandom don’t do this, but oh my goodness I’ve never seen Medli even mentioned even once in the HW with LU stories. Maybe that’s just me, and I just need to look harder, but I still feel like these characters are underrepresented, and that not nearly enough people are simply looking at the character list for HW. I know that LU focuses on Links, but having them not interact with others that aren’t Link in a place where they clearly would just boggles the mind. Im not trying to hate on anyone, I’ve loved all the HWLU fics I’ve read, I just want to see more character interactions. And more HWLU in general.
So let me just give you all some ideas I have for HWLU/just HW fanworks. Someone might’ve already made a fic with them, and if so, please link me as I would love to read them.
Captain Link, Mask, Toon(there are so many different nicknames for this guy, but I’m just going w/ Toon rn), and Aryll are at camp. You can dive into Aryll and Toon’s relationship, as well as Link and Mask’s relationships with their own families, and at the end you can have Aryll consider Link and Mask to her brothers too. You can even add Linkle there if you want her and Link to be siblings. Aryll and Linkle can even bond! It would be sweet.
The Spirit Tracks Zelda is a playable character, in her phantom form, so I’ll call her Phantom. She knows that Tetra is her ancestor and whatever relationship she and Toon had, your choice. She and Tetra can be friends, she and Toon can be friends, she can be friends with anyone! Phantom could let Toon know about his successor, and there are a bunch of things you can do with that. She can talk about Spirit to Toon, and the adventure she had with him. This could be included in a Chain meets Spirit fic where at least Wind would know about Spirit beforehand, or the other way around with Phantom telling him all about HW! The possibilities are endless!
You can have Mask and Ruto learn about the fate of the Zoras from Medli, and wouldn’t that just be heartbreaking. I know you people love your angst, and here it is, already shining upon a silver plater.
I feel like Marin and Ravio would be friends. Have Ravio mention Marin offhandedly to Legend, maybe accidentally. Marin can be real. Ravio can have pictures of her. I know you people love Ravio.
Fi is a playable character. Like she actually is there, not just as a sword, and she does turn into a sword to beat up enemies. Have her be a character and maybe let Mask’s resentment of the Master Sword go down a bit because of her. Or have Warriors talk to Sky about her, giving him hope that one day he’ll be able to see her again.
Skull Kid is also a playable character. So is Agitha and Tingle. Do something, I don’t know I honestly don’t have any idea rn, but I do know Agitha plays a semi-important part in the plot, with Midna.
Those are all the ideas I got for now. I love HW and love how people are writing for it with LU. There is just so much more people can do, and so many characters to work with. I’m just a bit sad that people tend to forget them in favor of just having the Links, which is understandable because this is about Linked Universe. But I just feel like some people are missing out on some wonderful writing opportunities here. Or maybe that just me, and I’m being a butt, who knows.

<shakily rolling into your inbox> Would you gift us with chapter commentary, please?
Tumblr media
Your wish is my command:
Framing the past section around headlines was not my original plan. I wanted to do a repeating refrain of "This is how the war ended," but when it came time to actually write it, I was bored with it. Yeah, kinda thought about it too hard. So I went back to the drawing board.
I also considered framing the chapter around the passing seasons, but that seemed too boring. I wanted something with a bit more pizazz.
Plus, one of my favorite genres of fan work is in-universe media like newspapers and magazine covers. This is a pretty weak attempt at it, but at least I threw my hat into the ring.
I've been trying for a while now to imply that the original HW storyline is what was spread as propaganda to the people of Hyrule, but this is the first time I made it really, really clear.
So the engineer being assigned to the coast is a reference to how the DLC that features Toon Link is the one where there's suddenly an ocean. Very smooth of me lol
This chapter ended up being a bit of a dumping ground for all of the relationships I was ignoring in favor of writing about the brothers, ironically because I too was too consumed with the engineer and the child to write about anything else, which in turn really drove home how all-consuming their presence was for Link
The fun thing about Midna's scene is that her and Link going on nightly walks together was one of the very first ideas I had for CTB by virtue of it being inherited from when I thought I was going to write a romcom. Incredible that it took half a million words to finally get to it.
My favorite part of the past is the bit where Link writes all of the letters to the engineer. It's just a lot of fun to sit there and figure out what kind of bullshit he would spout to kinda apologize but not really. It was even more fun to punch him back down with Lincoln's brutal response. Just rereading it, I feel like you can tell I was having a blast.
I also had a lot of fun finding ways to show symptoms of Link's alcoholism getting worse without him realizing it. The constant headaches, the nausea, the shakey hands, the sensory sensitivity-- him experiencing all of this and going so deep into denial that he can't understand why his body is reacting that way.
It's been so long since I've managed to give Toto some screen time that I kinda forgot how much I like his character? He's just a guy, but I like that he's just a guy. But I don't think I made it too clear in the chapter that in their friend group, they were the least friends with each other. Link was closer to Anders, and Toto to Uri. They're being driven together by virtue of being the only ones left, moreso than I initially conveyed.
And, of course, I got to talk about Uri again. Again, Uri is always so interesting to handle because he is a character who we will never see in person and Link is too traumatized by the death of to think about in detail. Even now, Uri feels like a mystery. All we know about him is how Link feels about him.
And finally, Zelda. The thing about Zelda is that I feel like her goals are really transparent, but I always get comments from people who want there to be this moment where everything about her is spelled out. And, despite the fact that she monologues about her feelings here, I don't think this is exactly what everyone was hoping for. The more I read it over, I can see how she probably just got more confusing.
Also, I know I need to stop writing monologues. But have you considered that the monologues are sexy?
I feel like I should say something about how Zelda's relationship with Hylia, but it really speaks for itself. I will say that as much as I like how BOTW is so ambiguous with Hylia, I am a little bit more fascinated with the idea that "your god is real and they specifically hate you." Like, how are you supposed to cope with that? We should all be thankful Zelda isn't more fucked up than she is.
I should also say something about her thoughts on the engineer... so first, my goal with that relationship was always for it to be toxic from both ends, with the engineer trying to use her while she uses him-- which gets even more complicated when you consider all the ways Zelda echoes Link. Like Link, she sees parts of herself in the engineer. Unlike him, she wants to save be saved, so she in turn saves him. Link hates himself so much that he has to drag everyone else down with him.
In the era of everyone wanting Zelda to no longer be a damsel in distress, it's kind fun to give her the traditional goal of being saved by someone else, to then twist it around. She is begging to be rescued, but she won't fix anything herself.
This idea really goes against the popular depictions of HW Zelda, which is why I have iterated before that this Zelda is not Artemis. She's her own thing.
There was going to be more about how the war ended, but I decided to keep it for next chapter because (you guessed it) the word count got too long.
On to the present--
Congrats to everyone who said they wanted to see more of Spirit and Warriors talking shop. You really won with this chapter.
That being said, I always think that I never write what people want when they want it. Like I will write a chapter with a lot of action, so everyone says they want more action next. But then I follow it up with a chapter of people just talking, so I get a lot of people requesting more of that. But then, it's back to heavy action.
All that's to say that I feel bad that there wasn't more character drama this chapter
Also, I feel really bad for not including either Hyrule or Wind in this chapter. Those two are the characters people ask me to write more about the most. But unfortunately, the thing about juggling a large cast of characters is that some times you have to sit down and get a few of those characters out of the way for a bit so that we can focus on other things.
I don't want to make it sound like I was targeting those two on purpose. They just had the best excuse for not going on the Nephus mission.
Speaking of which, I feel terrible for constantly finding ways to leave Lana and Linkle out of the action-- and that's after I've talked so much about adding more women into the story to balance out the default nine dudes LU requires me to add. But again, there are so many characters that I have to find ways to leave some of them behind. And again, it was really easy to give them an excuse to not be in the main action. But It's probably a bad thing that they are easily excused. I should work on that.
And I know I can write scenes with a shit ton of characters talking together. I've done it plenty of times in CTB and other ensemble stories before it. But it's a lot of work, and when I need to focus on more important plot points, the last thing I want to juggle is balancing every scene so that everyone has something to do.
Sorry to belabor that point. Sometimes, I get really annoyed with how big the cast it when it's not even my fault.
It is my fault. I just want to complain.
I appreciate everyone who has their own version of Spirit going on more legendary adventures while he is wearing his OSHA mandated work uniform. I know the Heroes of Hyrule are not unionized, but I at least would like to make sure he is properly dressed with an adventure.
That being said, his Castle Guard uniform was partially inspired by the uniform for the Free Planets Alliance in the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes:
Tumblr media
That is not a great photo, but I was envisioning something like this-- "this" being a more modern cut with clear nautical influences (cause the Castle Guard was probably originally a navy)
Also the crest on Spirit's uniform is Tetra's pirate emblem. Do not get be started about how I fucked up the crest of the New Hyrulean royal family back in chapter 6 and how I have been looking for some band-aid to place over that mistake so that it would look like I did it on purpose
I didn't expect the scene where Spirit talks to Four to be so polarizing. I didn't even think it was a significant moment when I wrote it. Yet I've seen a huge gambit of reactions, from people calling Spirit cruel or others saying that the moment was sweet. That being said, I am living for this. If there is one thing I want right now, it is for everyone's opinion on Spirit to be split.
Did you guys enjoy me trying to write about how machinery works? Honestly, I could have probably cut all that, but I did so much work establishing the mechanics behind the ganons in previous chapters that I felt like I had to go through with it.
My original plan was for Warriors's plan to involve taking Philo hostage from the start, but I changed it because writing a kidnapping scene would have been too much work. It still really bugs me. The way the chapter is written now feels really cheap, but again. I didn't feel like I had enough space.
I also ran into the fun problem of wanting to show the nuances of Philo and Icarius's relationship when one can't speak and the other would not speak Hylian. Legend saved my ass a bit with this one, but I don't know if all of the little details got through.
Speaking of which, I should talking the House of Nephus
So obviously, I wanted the House of Nephus to reflect the original brothers dynamic. The idea is that they are what Warriors, Spirit, and Time/Mask would turn into if both Spirit and Mask stayed.
Except, in practice, I had to give them their own distinct personalities so that they wouldn't be boring as fuck
Icarius and Philo got away with getting small but really effective changes. They both still feel like reflections of Spirit and Time respectively
But Nephus.... so my original personality for him was someone as jaded and mean as Warriors is at his worst. But he felt too much like Zelda or Impa. So I went back to the drawing board to find some character angle that would be really interesting and effective for how little screen time he will ultimately get.
My inspiration came from the Virginia Woolf seminar I was in when I first started working on CTB. I was thinking a lot about rich, British assholes; very specifically about the kind who are self-prescribed intellectuals who fetishize non-white cultures while maintaining the superiority of Western imperialism.
So with that in hand, I got rid jadedness and turned Nephus into a guy dripping with charisma but is unaware of how terrible of a person he is. And as a reflection of Warriors, he works thematically.
But you can make the argument that this is not the story for this kind of a character, especially when I have already gone through such lengths to clarify that Hyrule is an imperialist nation that echoes America. You can see me poking fun at it in some of the dialogue during this scene, but still.
(And it gets worse when you look at the subtext of how light vs dark magic is treated between Hyrule and Faovaria).
So, yeah. I deserve some criticism for this one. I know it. But I didn't change it because I just liked how immediately interesting Nephus was. I couldn't think of an alternative that would have been as effective as this affable evil. Sorry about that.
Another idea I had was that Nephus was going to be the Faovarian equivalent of the Hero of Hyrule, and he would even have his own dual blades of dark and light magic to prove it. I ended up not doing this because it was too heavy handed.
I originally was going to keep the swords, and I even realized that if I had planned things out a bit better, the dark magic sword could have been Ghirahim. I decided that it would have been too out of left field to have worked, but man. I have regretted since day 1 that I cut Ghirahim from the story. I'm sorry, Ghirahim.
And then I didn't even include the swords. Motherfucker.
That actually was a genuine mistake on my part, because the point of the swords would have been to give Nephus's speech on his religion more credence. We as the audience know that the goddesses exist. And yet... why does there seem to be more to the gods of this universe? Are Hylia and the Golden Three really just oracles? If Nephus has these cool swords, what other powers and weapons does Faovaria have within its borders? You know, just world building stuff.
I came up with too much story for the House of Nephus than what I will ultimately have space to include in CTB. I'll try to strategic so that you won't be annoyed with the lack of answers from some of the questions you probably have.
As important as Nephus is, he's ultimately not the main antagonist of the story. If I was willing to write 20 more chapters, I could do a lot more with him, Philo, and Icarius; but I would like to see the end of CTB someday lol
Originally, only Time, Spirit, and Midna were going to go with Warriors to meet Nephus. There was definitely going to be this bit where Spirit and Warriors were going to be like "oh fuck, he's hot" as Nephus flirted with them. Meanwhile, Time (a married man) would be sitting there like "really??? both of you have horrible taste??"
I am also realizing I forgot to write a moment where Warriors is horrified to realize that Nephus was going to make Philo sit there in pain instead of rushing him to a doctor. Fucking hell.
Also, that Nephus's spirit feels normal to Spirit is important. Not on a plot level, but thematically. Just hang on to that thought next time you think about the whole spirit sensing thing.
I always knew that CTB was going to evolve into a Triforce quest story. There's no way I could write about a guy who's supposed to be this brutal strategist and not let him realize he has an easy solve to everything. But I also didn't want this to be easy or feel cheap. It's why I went through all that effort to establish that getting those pieces would involving going up against the Royal Family and the Knights of Hyrule. It's going to be hard, and it will involve all the fighting and manipulating you expect CTB to have. It'll also involve moral dilemmas.
After all, we've been talking about the moral dilemmas presented by the Triforce since at least chapter 6 (remember when I said that there was so much set-up in that chapter for stuff that was for far later in the story? Hello, pay off!)
All that's to say that I am worried that people don't like this direction. I have gotten a few comments about how excited people are for Warriors's plan, but only time will tell if this ruined the story for some people.
And I know I worry a lot about ruining CTB. That's not a problem that's going to be solved any time soon, so let me have this one.
Finally, the chapter was going to go until Time's talk with Warriors. Decided to move it to next chapter because, you guessed it, space.

Was just curious; I've seen a bunch of people say that Toon Link in HW is Wind. I've seen other people say it's Spirits (I lean towards the Spirits option). I've been obsessing over your stuff and I just wanna know how that whole Toon Link in HW ties in with Mask and Warriors. Was it Spirits, or Wind, or was it another person entirely? Just wanted to hear what you have to say, love your stuff :D
So I was in the process of answering this ask and explaining why Wind is the one to have been in HW, but now that I think about it. Why isn’t both. ???? I mean both Tetra and Zelda (Spirit Tracks) are in it, and Toon Link, although the same playable character, has access to the Hero’s Sword (Windwaker) and the Sand Wand (Spirit Tracks). I didn’t know I loved this theory until now, but both Wind and Spirit fighting in the War of Ages is actually such a sick idea. Nothing would get done ever. Love that.
That being said, that’s my new headcanon, but not necessarily what you were asking. 💀 considering your actual question:
It’s Wind. Except I fully believe the War of Ages took place for him a couple of years after the event of LU. So instead of being 14, he’s like 17 or 18 during the war. He remember Wars from LU, but Wars doesn’t know him during HW, meanwhile during Lu Wars remembers Wind from the war, but for Wind, that hasn’t happened yet. Idk if that makes sense. Long story short, I think it’s Wind who was in HW.

More Hyrule warriors thoughts:
I’m not a zelink hater I swear but… that’s a lesbian. That’s the lesbianist lesbian to ever fucking lesbian and Impa is her wife. End of fucking story.
I don’t know why the only zelink I really actively ship doesn’t actually include anyone who goes by the name Zelda??? But idk. For me it’s always about Toon Link and Tetra ok they’re my day ones. I love a strong woman and a man who worships her like she deserves!
Also there is no way in hell HW Link is straight. There just isn’t. There is no heterosexual explanation for THAT
Also a dialogue idea I had:
Lana: cia, you know he’ll never choose you
Zelda: Well actually. It doesn’t really matter what he thinks cause I don’t like men.
Lana: who said I was talking about you? I just said he’s not gonna choose Cia—especially after what she did—and she knows that cause she can SEE THE FUTURE
Zelda, looking at Link: WHO IS SHE TALKING ABOUT?
Link, face red, rubbing the burn scar on his arm: uhh welll…… funny story actually…
Cia, enraged: I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE JUST KILLED HIM!
Volga, from the other room: BUT YA DIDNT!

Another one of my Links! The Cardinal Hero, nicknamed Conductor. He's the Toon Link that appears in HW and represents his timeline's version of all the Adult Timeline Links.
Some notes on him under the cut
As previously stated, he's WW + PH + ST. C^21 runs on my personal timeline theory so he's an interpretation of how that Adult Timeline could go down
His Hero title comes from the four cardinal directions, as they're very important for traveling, whether that be land or sea
Nickname is because he both conducts the wind and is a train conductor. It's win/win!
"The design I have in mind for him snowballed into making him sharp-tongued and cocky so he's just Like That now" - actual quote from my word document
Granted, he's not totally insufferable, just know that he was notably worse before the Valley of Seers fiasco. The War of Ages overall smoothed out his more... undesirable qualities a bit. But his pride took the most hits
He and Young Link (don't have a good nickname for him rn) were on the same platoon (?) so they're close. But Conductor was/is a bad influence 😂
Back to his design tho, I wanted to lean into the "royal" in "royal engineer" so I gave him a suit which is technically his uniform. His conductor hat is kind of required even during the War tho to help tell him and Union apart
Obligatory Toon Link Swirl on his vest bc I said so
He has a coat with tails but only really wears it to meetings. Or it's cold. Or he wants to flex
The greaves are questionable and I might remove them
One last thing: @skyward-floored you asked for him!

HC's for Warriors during the War of Eras? Please? :)
HMMMMMMMS please forgive the late response my head is made of Hollow Rocks . and also my memory of the happenings of hw is bit fuzzy so sorry for any inconsistencies or incorrect stuff
i personally headcanon that everything during the hyrule warriors dlc/legends parts never happened. meaning he never met toon/wind there; nor mask/time; doesn't know marin, tetra, ravio, etc. this isn't rly anything to do w an actual problem w the dlcs i have, it's just that i generally dislike time travel shenanigans (it is a Miracle i like lu in general actually, now that im thinkin abt it). it makes everything confusing and it's VERY hard not to create paradoxes and paradoxes make me so . sosossoso os [explodes]
basically anything past the shining beacon scenario is Not In My Head and therefore has not been experienced by our dear boy warriors linked universe
it makes it a bit less confusing for me, rly, and it also means that wars didn't let two children (toon, mask) fight in a war . i don't think he'd Ever do that if he could help it (unfortunately wind is not spared from a journey w him later .... even then, wars wishes he could've prevented him from the physical/mental harm lu may have brought on. he may be a damn good hero and very capable, but that doesn't mean wars doesn't regret letting all the trauma seep into him)
other than the many, many (many) scars and burns he gets throughout the war, it obviously deals a great amount of damage to his mind as well. he was fucked up Before the war in a sorta different sense (terrible father, stifling home, forced to dedicate all his time into being smth he didn't want to be, conditioned to overwork himself, fear of abandonment). but the war brings a lot of new stuff:
paranoia is a big one. every time he enters a room his eyes dart to all the exits. he is Never unarmed and always carries at least his dagger w him. sometimes he gets days where the Dread is too much and he's jumpy and easily startled and keeps looking over his shoulder. there's been times where somebody taps him to get his attention and he Whips around and has his dagger to their neck in a second (he always feels terrible abt it afterward and apologizes profusely)
^ that extends to the paranoia he has abt people not actually being who they appear to be. a wizzrobe during his game could shapeshift into other people and be nearly indistinguishable from the real deal. sometimes when his friends/allies have an off day where they don't quite act like themselves, he can't help but be wary of them and watch them closely. he doesn't mean to not have faith in his allies, he just,,,has trouble thinking of anything else
i've mentioned his big fear of fire. in the future, any moment he's ever w the chain and they visit the deku tree he can't look at it without seeing it up in flames. after his final fight w volga and having the memory of a giant dragon pinning him down and shooting fire at him at point blank range, he's likely . never going to get over that fear
ohhhmy god he is FUCKED UP!!!! FROM THE GREAT FAIRIES!!!!!!!!!!
bad claustrophobia 100%. but the great fairies also just like . straight up take him out of the bottle they trap him in and just . torment him. it's Fucked Up actually. they slash at him w swords, rain Giant Bombs down on him, summon Levias to Fucking Strike Him with Lightning Several Times. literally WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!
in the future Anytime the chain goes near a great fairy wars just . stays near the back. or better yet he simply waits outside/a very very far distance away. he's terrified of them for numerous reasons
i also like to think that most of his men adore him and think he's a damn good captain. and during the war there was a certain lil band of em who would dare stray out of line to simply ask him if he's Okay. it may seem,, rude, to speak out of line and out of turn, but wars was never the type to gripe about little things like that anyway. and he ? rly appreciated the fact that they bothered to ask. especially when they thought they might've gotten in trouble for it
and lastly, when he was younger wars was !!! a bit naive. and while his mother had always taught him that the world was good and there was sm good In It and so many reasons to love it, it might not have had the desired effect on him in the long run. he grew up thinking that everybody was simply . good. and that made it all the more challenging for him to identify whether or not he was being used or played or even abused. he's told that everything is good and he should be good too, and then he's immediately thrust into an environment that is decidedly Not Good, but he's 9 years old and who is he to think his mother wrong ? mom Must be right. This must be good
aaalllll the way up until he's 18, he's sorta convinced that the world would never need this many soldiers to defend their land, bc who in their right mind would kill people just for the sake of power ? it's a very innocent way of thinking, and it isn't until literally his First mission out in the field, right before he's revealed to have the triforce of courage and he's promoted, that he learns that not everybody is good. he's ripped from believing such nice, tame, wonderful things and immediately faced with literally some of the most horrible sights a person could ever witness. sure, his father prepared him for a war, but his mother had prepared him for a world that's much softer than this. and he tended to take his mother's advice much more to heart than his father's

chain link fences nickname list + reasons (wip)
*starlight (botw link) - his name is actually signed 'star fragment', representing his adventurous, questing nature. he thrives in the wild, and he's rare and lucky himself, like a star fragment. he's also one of the few people who manages to find star fragments, so isha especially loves using that name. when spoken, however, it's a little awkward, so it gets changed to starlight. it is also a reference to how botw opens (zelda says 'you are the light, our light that must shine on hyrule once again'. but i didn't want to just call him light lol)
*archive (botw zelda) - this is mostly a placeholder while i think abt it, but. she likes history and research and documenting stuff :-) also she's a woman out of time, going from her life 100 years ago to now
*charm, captain (hyrule warriors link) - he is handsome and charming :) need i say more
*grace (hyrule warriors zelda) - she is lovely and graceful :) also sounds cute with charm
*bee (alttp, oracle games) - he is a busy adventurer (a busy bee, if you will) (also an affectionate nod to therunawayguys' alttp playthrough, where emile called it the 'bee-percent run'. this was my first introduction to alttp)
*cloud (skyward sword link) - a) he's a daydreamer (head in the clouds) b) he literally lives in the clouds. the links are very creative
-his sign name is actually 'sleepyhead', a gift from zelda in their youth
*sunshine (sws zelda) - sunshine was the sign name link gave her as kids, but it became especially fitting with the whole hylia deal, yanno?
*twilight / farmboy (tp link) - i could not come up with anything else. if i change my mind, y'all'll know. also thank u rar for farmboy <3
*tune (ww link) - a pun on 'toon link', but also refers to the musical nature of him playing the winds. there is no formal sign language on the great sea, but the folks on outset made a rudimentary version for him; aryll has always called him big brother, both speaking and in their sign
*tetra (ww zelda) - y'all know why
*fay / sprite (oot link) - malon calls him fairy boy. she is the only one allowed to do so. 'sprite' is technically mm link, and what charm called him during the war (but i haven't played mm or hw yet)
*wimple (oot zelda) - this is her sign name. i'm working on another nickname, but this works for now
*hazel (loz1+2 link) - hazel is a durable, resilient wood that can grow even under less-than-ideal circumstances. seemed a cute name (i'm still working on their character development)
*honey (albw, tfh, la link) - this was mostly a joke to parallel bee. just kinda stuck tho
*clover (minish cap link) - partly due to that art of him with the minish under the clovers, partly because four-leaf clovers are lucky. idk i just liked it
*fortune (minish cap zelda) - goes along with the lucky nature of link
*hex (loz cdi link) - this is a JOKE like yes he will actually show up, at least in paint chips, but still
*jinx (loz cdi zelda) - again, JOKE. but coordinated name with hex :)
*prism (fsa link) - i have thoughts abt fsa but i'll have to go rewatch trg play it. he won't come into play for a while anyway but
i'm still working out a lot of stuff, but here's a start :-)

Im still convinced that godawful "link suffers from arrogance" (non) arc in the middle of hyrule warriors was Omega Force having an actual story for Link all planned out expecting Nintendo to budge on their "Link can't have a personality" mandate since it was technically a spinoff, the same way toon link and capcom link were always allowed actual characterization, and then Nintendo just shut them down completely because it was clear HW was gonna basically be that console generation's mainline zelda title.
Cause like, if you've played the right warriors games you'd know despite being the hackiest of slashers, Omega Force can actually do writing pretty well and do characterization and self contained arcs REALLY well. To the point where even 'for a musou' Hyrule Warriors' middle act is glaringly rushed and underdeveloped.
And even after all these years, replaying that yeah I 100% place [an assumption for] the blame for that on the company whose reputation at this point is 90% how poorly they treat third parties and how much they want to force both other developers and the players to stick with a dogmatic approach to "you will develop/play the game in exactly this way".

I adore that people sometimes write Warriors as an older brother figure to Time due to his involvement in the war, but I also think we're missing the funnier younger older brother brother situation: if Wind considered himself to be Time's older brother.

Mask and Wind being in Hyrule Warriors
So like everybody has already acknowledged that Mask (Time) was in HW and helped with the war and such but here's the thing
Wind ALSO.
Witness:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toon link, right there, in all of his glory. AKA WIND. Why does NOBODY mention this????
(I feel like people ignore Wind's adventures way too much. It's starting to really frustrate me *sad face*. Like, first of all lets remember he stabbed someone straight through the face when he was Twelve, also he shares Windfish with Legend, can see ghosts -I have seen that one a lot more recently- , IS A FRiggen Pirate, and fought a war. Can- can we not just wave him off as a childish traumatized 6yo or a stupid 12yo boy? I personally see him as the most terrifying member of the chain. Just like, I love him so much, but sometimes he scares me.
...
I got off topic.)
So in HW Toon Links Bio is: "With portals opened to other dimensions, another Link slipped through – the legendary Hero of Winds from the Era of the Great Sea. While trying to save his kidnapped sister, he challenged the ruler of evil. Helped by a red boat and a pirate crew, and controlling the wind, he traveled far and wide across the Great Sea. Quick on his feet and light in the air, Toon Link excels at speedy combos with his short sword and trusty Deku Leaf. He may be small, but he packs a punch!"
Even more proof right there, that he is actually wind and not another toon (like Leg or smthn).
I was talking with my sibling about this a couple days ago, and they actually had no idea Wind was there so I'm guessing that's how it is for all'yall. But while we were discussing, I started thinking about the rest of the chain and such. And how I makes no sense that Wars and Time wouldn't recognize him when they were such prominent parts of the war.
So, if you've ever played HW you know that you have to fight characters to be able to play them. That means the first time they (Mask and Wind) met Wars, it would be by fighting him.
(Brain thinks more angst when wars has to fight this kid and thinks it's probably the kid of a traitor he killed. But then like, very quickly realizes it's not bc they actually know how to Fight.)
But Like Think. Why would they fight first thing when they get there??? I would say like they're just freaked out but considering there's literally no other option to get the character, my brain goes to that idea that all the earned characters, upon first arriving in HW were possessed and compelled to attack all Hylians and their side alike. That makes even more sense to me because Why would Cia (the one who made the portals) bring in more warriors for the opposite side?
So how it went for Mask I think, is that he and Wars fought, and when Mask was defeated he was offered to help with the war (like all the other characters did). Wars and Mask are seriously heavy hitters (like if you've Ever Seen Wars Fight Like WOw), so they are both put on the front lines I say Mask is a heavy hitter not only because he's amazing with that friggen sword of his, but also because he has the Fierce Diety.
Tumblr media
(Speaking of FD, I can't help but think of what would cause Mask to get so low that he would use FD so often. Brain thinking goes to Mask fighting in the war, hope is fading, he's near death, and a s a last resort uses it. That's the first time there. But afterwards he realizes how useful he can be as FD, and while he doesn't want to do anything anymore because he's burned out and probably high-key suicidal at that point, he decides it's better if he just lets FD take over most of the time.)
But still it wouldn't make sense that Wars doesn't recognize Wind. SO solution:
Impa or someone else are the ones that first fought Wind, keeping him from meeting Wars them. Afterwards Wind joined the war and was put in a different faction of the war, further in the back, because he's more strategy than heavy hitter (ofc he obviously still fights really well) meanwhile Wars and Mask were in the front lines. This why they never knew Wind was there. Because they Never Met.
Tumblr media
Look at him. So majestic. SO epic.
So my conclusion is: Wars and Time didn't know Wind was there. Wind was there. And because he's a secretive little creep, doesn't tell anyone.

You know in hw when you get toon link  and Ayrll talks in his stead, it’s like the cutest thing can you imagine her still doing that. And his victory animation is so good, he looks so happy. I’ll say it again send this kid home too! A bunch of her quotes and that little part with I just add because why not :) He’s so good for crowds! I wish I had him sooner.

Ok, hear me out. I think I might have figured out how the timeline comes back together in Zelda.
So, with BotW it’s agreed that all the timelines converged to make it so this is where they all end up no matter what. And even though Zelda games aren’t super great with their handling of time travel and what not (looking at you Skyward Sword, I’m still puzzling over the logic of the ending) we can see that there are echoes of all three timelines in BotW, and it seems to me like they know of events from all three timelines. Now how could that be? Even if all the timelines arrive at this place, they’d only know of events from the timeline that BotW came from, right? But instead of there being a few BotW worlds that each have slight differences, we have one that has things from all the timelines.
So now we get down to the theory. Hyrule Warriors, not AoC, but just plain old Hyrule Warriors. (Although it’s definitely not plain.) it’s not considered a canon game, and with how the game is that’s perfectly understandable and was my stance on it too until I came up with this theory. Because what if HW was canon? Where would it fit in the timeline? Well, with just the main storyline you could say that it’d fit in the child timeline, what with it using just SS, OoT, and TP, TP is the only one after the timeline split and would therefore make it easy to insert it there. But if you add some of the extra characters, for example Ravio and Toon Link, then things get more complicated, because they’re from the downfall timeline and adult timeline respectively. So where would that leave it then? …I think you can see where I’m going with this; the game deals with holes in time being ripped open. People that never would have even known about each other are now meeting and becoming friends. That would have to shake something. And so, even though they all go back to their own times, they’re not forgotten in HW era, and they keep telling tales of em… which hasn’t even stopped by the BotW era.
So yeah, in conclusion, HW being canon makes things actually make sense, since that’d be the actual timeline conversion. Ik is not perfect, but I think it helps make sense of this mess of a timeline, so thank you for listening to my rambling.

I would like to know about where everyone has their fairy brand 👉👈
Okay, so the hard part about answering this is that I now have to remember where I put them all. Also, since this got a little long (and I am bound to have forgotten someone at some point and will need to come back to add them) I'm just doing all the HW original characters here, and all the characters borrowed from other games can go under the cut.
Link's is on his neck, specifically the left side of his neck, sorta to the back. So, like, if you face straight ahead and put your fingers behind your ear, to the part where it connects the furthest back, and then slide them down, there's this little divot in your neck that your fingers will slide into. Link's Fairy Brand is there.
Zelda/Sheik's is along her collarbone, also on the left. Like, find the middle of your left collar bone and then shift them down so they're just under the bone and not on it. That's about where Zelda put hers.
Impa's is on the back of her neck. About the middle of it and lined up perfectly on her spine.
Lana's is on the inside of her left wrist. (Cia's is on the inside of her right wrist because I like parallels.) Just below the heel of the hand, where you can see all the veins in your wrist.
Ruto's is smack dab in the middle of her upper back, in the little divot between her shoulder blades. Like, the little space right in line with where your shoulder blades turn into triangles. If that makes sense? Watch someone flex their back, it should make sense then.
Darunia's is on the shoulder, above the symbol of the gorons on his arm. I think I put it on his left? I can't remember exactly, but about there.
Young Link's is on the back of his right shoulder blade. Like, about the middle of that 'plate', if you know what I mean.
Fi does not have a Fairy Brand, as she is a magic sword. I imagine she can use her inherent magic-ness to tap into to those communication lines without needing a fairy. Or if she does need a fairy, doesn't need the brand to act as an interface, and can just do that herself.
Agatha put hers on her cheek. I believe it was her left cheek, but regardless she decided to put it on her face because she thought the brand was cute. (This, I imagine, caused some understandable confusion from a few people when she got home. Or maybe not, it is Agatha after all.)
Midna I tossed two ideas around. I eventually decided to put it in the middle of her chest, so it was just visible above her hair in her true form, but not so high as to imply it was at her throat instead of her chest. The other idea was the back of one of her hands.
King Daphnese has his on the back of his right wrist, right where the joint/bend is. More on his arm than on his hand, but it's very much on his wrist.
Tetra put hers on the back of her left hand. Left, because the triforce would be on her right hand. About in the same place though.
Toon Link put his on his neck, on the right. Unlike Link though his is just smack dab in the middle of the side of his neck instead of shifted back.
Medli's is on her shoulder, I think on the right. It was the shoulder Darunia's wasn't on.
Marin's is on her chest, directly over her heart.
And Ravio I'm still torn about, because on one hand it'd make sense to put it somewhere hidden, but also if it was somewhere obvious then you could have the humour of him just refusing to answer questions about it. I think I'm going to put it on his right arm, right below his elbow. On the outside of his elbow, not the inside. Below the funny bone on his forearm. That spot. That's the spot I'm currently lingering on for him.
The villains do not get Fairy Brands because they are evil and I highly doubt that the fairies would be willing to help them. Cia gets an exception because of the events of the Great Sea DLC.
