there are many ways in which luis buñuel’s the criminal life of archibaldo de la cruz (1955) puts me in mind of american psycho (2000). both films depict a handsome and fantastically wealthy young man glide through the frothy upper echelons of society while committing a series of brutal and highly sexualized murders that are vividly real to him but have a more tenuous relationship with reality for the rest of society. while patrick bateman’s murders are treated by the film as more real than archibaldo de la cruz’s, both films use this premise to explore a similar phenomenon: the chronic understimulation of the upper class. luis buñuel explores with even greater breadth than mary harron the different destructive and meaningless hobbies the wealthy take on to stave away boredom and disguise their isolation: gambling, religion, affairs, modeling, pottery, and serial murder. they consider these hobbies the most real and portentous things in the world, whereas something as minor as a revolution is irrelevant to their reality, relegated to the pictures of a storybook at the beginning of the film. both this film and american psycho (2000) address and fairly neatly reject the trope serial killing being a manifestation or result of queerness; the killing urge in these wealthy men is not the result of their natures but of their situations, situations in which they have always held all the power in their lives and have always been taught to want more. this increase in power is sought through sexuality and violence, and proves to be just as meaningless and ephemeral as the rest of the dubious personal merits by which they might claim to deserve their status. the portrayal of the wealthy in the criminal life of archibaldo de la cruz (1955), while by no means a deviation from buñuel’s standard treatment of the topic, is a fascinating and highly entertaining one, and this is certainly one of buñuel’s films that i would recommend

I agree with many things you say about George but when he was leading the race, if I remember correctly, he had Lewis, Max and Fernando on his tail and Mercedes asked on lap 4 to manage tyres - aka told him to go slow. I believe any driver would have felt wronged in that situation when you're suddenly overtaken by everyone. Mercedes strategies are also often very wobbly and not working because they still planned them with a mindset of having a winning car, which in fact they don't and both Lewis and George lost out over that. In the end, George is probably used to it from Williams, to think and work from the car, so of course he's going to continue it
Yeah Mercedes do need to strategize and take into account that they don't have the car to qualify on pole consistently. They still send their drivers out too late in qualifying, it's why both George and Lewis have been eliminated in Q2 this year. I don't know how they got their car concept so wrong these past couple of years but they need to figure it out (or maybe they do know and they won't breach the cost cap to fix the problems).
As for him suggesting strategies on the fly because that's how he survived in Williams, I can see how that habit can be hard to break. It shows that he has leadership qualities needed to be world champion. But it also comes across as arrogant at times (which to some people that is distasteful but to me it shows that he takes initiative). For right now, I would like for him to not suggest to swap places with Lewis unless Lewis is noticeably lacking in pace or he's having reliability issues. And just overtake him fairly on the racetrack. Because otherwise it's kind of irritating to see: if you think you can catch the people ahead, you should be able to overtake your teammate in the same machinery.
Overall, I just hope he is doing well mentally because there are a lot of positives to take from yesterday: starting P8 and finishing P5 is something to be proud of. I know he doesn't really social media comments (good because they're always dragging him) but he should know that he has lots of supporters who want to see him become world champion someday. But the off the fly strategy suggestions are off-putting to me at times.

I think when people think of mental illness and what helps, especially with things like anxiety and depression, the treatment involves pushing yourself. Pushing yourself to get out of bed, to exercise, to take a shower, to go out in public, to order your own food from the cashier, etc.
And because the mental health movement has grown so much, people think that's the default of ALL illnesses. That the only way someone will get better is if they push themselves. That practice makes perfect. That you'll become more comfortable or strong over time the more you do something.
But what people need to realize is, with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses, pushing yourself in most cases is DETRIMENTAL. Pushing yourself past your limits can lead to flare ups or further injury. That's why it's important to know your limits, how certain activities may affect your condition, and learn how to either adapt or get help to complete the activity in question.
Also, most of us are already pushing ourselves. Most of us don't have access to the help or equipment we need. Most of us live in places where we frequently encounter inaccessible obstacles. Most of us NEED to rest.
So please don't try to be our physical therapists or doctors. There are people specifically trained to help us navigate our own conditions and limitations. There are people trained to help us strengthen our body's resilience without causing flare-ups or injury. Do not tell us "it'll be good for you" or "you need the exercise" when we say something is too heavy or too far or when we say we need our mobility aid(s). Your friend with depression may need to be encouraged to get out of bed, but your friend with chronic illness definitely doesn't.
Respect our rest.

good mornings throughout the travel
[ID: Two comics of Vash and Wolfwood from Trigun Maximum. The second is underneath the read more.
The first is in four panels and follows Vash and Wolfwood through hotel rooms. First, Vash and Wolfwood exit adjacent rooms, and Wolfwood has sparkles floating around him as he exclaims, “Rise and shine! Ready to go?” Vash frowns, displeased, and says, Urk— Good morning to you too.”
Next, they’re in a room with two beds. Wolfwood is awake and fully dressed. He’s sitting on the bed and smoking, back turned away from the viewer and he says, “Wake up already, sleepyhead.” Vash sits up with his eyes still closed and yawns before saying good morning. After that, they’re sharing a bed, and Wolfwood gets up and says, “Morning, sunshine. Time to get up.” His body shadows Vash from the sunlight. Vash is still lying down with a blanket draped over him as he mumbles good morning.
Finally, they’re embracing in bed, both shirtless. Sunlight shines on them, but their contact allows their shadows to drape over their faces. Vash smiles, kisses the top of Wolfwood’s head, and says, “Good morning, Wolfwood.” Wolfwood sleepily says, “Mph, g’morning, needle-noggin’,” snuggling into on Vash’s shoulder. End ID] ID CREDIT
TRIMAX Vol. 10 Spoilers under read more // bonus comic
Tumblr media
[ID: The bonus comic starts with Vash asleep in bed, fully clothed with his hair half-black. Someone says “Good morning,” and Vash says, “Morning, Wolf—w...” He trails off as Livio, holding a plate of food, stares with abject shock.
Livio says, “I’m sorry.” Vash, smiling but sweating, says, “No, it’s my bad...” Livio repeats, “I’m sorry.” Vash says, “Geez, stop apologizing,” and cuts off Livio’s “I—” with a “Good morning, Livio.” Livio quietly mumbles, “... Good morning...”
Vash sits up from the couch he was sleeping on and looks down, thinking, “... That’s right. I won’t wake up to you anymore... I have to get used to that...” End ID]
