I Am The Apocalypse
Pairings: Jay Halstead x Reader; Kelly Severide x Reader (Platonic)
Warnings: Mentions of injury, Mentions of blood
Summary: Mini Episode rewrite of Chicago Fire S03x19 where reader was in Med when the blast went off.
A/N: First Chicago/Jay fic so I hope it’s okay~ Just something that popped in my head while I was rewatching so I just penned it down. Wrote it mainly from reader’s POV so only picked off parts where I felt would fit!

(Y/N POV)
I sipped my coffee at the table, dressed in Jay’s hoodie, which was my personal favourite, watching him pour his coffee.
“I can feel you staring.” He chuckled, as another lady stuck her head into the kitchen.
“Hey… Hi. Morning…” Jay glanced at her awkwardly.
“Melanie.” She responded, stepping into the kitchen.
“Jay. Will’s brother.” He responded, handing her the coffee cup.
“It’s nice to meet you.” She responded with a smile, as I watched the exchange with amusement. She seemed to just realise my presence and gave a polite nod before shuffling out of the kitchen to meet Will in the living room.
I raised my eyebrows at Jay who laughed and poured another cup of coffee for himself.
“When do you have to be at work?” Jay asked his brother, a cheeky smile lingering on his face, as Will entered the kitchen.
Will looked at his watch, “About five minutes ago?”
Jay exchanged a look with me. “It’s your first day.” He commented to his brother, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Uh, first and last, as it turns out.” Will replied, not looking up from the refrigerator.
Jay froze. “You’re… joking?”
Will shook his head. “No.”
I checked my phone, vaguely registering the conversation Jay was having with his brother about him returning to New York.
“Just give it a couple of weeks.” Jay paused before adding, “At least.”
Will turned to face Jay and shrugged. “I got to go.” Will turned to leave, adding, “Bye Y/N.”
I waved, gulping down the last of my coffee as Jay turned back to me with a sigh. I smiled and he took the empty mug from my hands, running it under water in the sink.
As I made to get up, my head gave a dull throb. Again. This stupid migraine hadn’t let up for at least a week. I closed my eyes and frowned, waiting for it to pass, pausing in my movement to get up from the table.
“Y/N?” I could feel Jay hovering over me now.
I cracked my eyes open, looking up at him. “I’m fine. It’s just that stupid migraine.”
Jay’s expression softened. “Maybe you should get that looked at.” He suggested, gently stroking my hair.
I nodded, “Yeah, maybe I’ll go to Med later.”
“I gotta go. Text me, okay?” Jay said, planting a kiss on the top of my head.
I smiled. “Be safe!” I called after him as he turned to give me a wink.
---
I had decided to make Med my first stop of the day after all and I was already sitting in a chair in the waiting room after registration. I had barely been there for 5 minutes when the waiting room became crowded with familiar faces of incoming firefighters from Firehouse 51, supporting incoming patients.
I nodded greetings to those who noticed me as they helped people in. I had been at 51 with Kelly as well as Molly’s with Jay enough times to be on familiar terms with most of them. I settled in for what I was sure was going to be a long wait, only looking up when I heard Kelly’s voice calling out, “Kendra!” as he helped the man he was supporting into a wheelchair.
Kelly glanced around and spotted me. “Y/N? You okay? What are you doing here?” He took a step closer to me.
I smiled at him. “I’m fine, just a persistent migraine, thought I’d better check it out. What’s up?” I asked, motioning to the room flooding with other firefighters.
Before Kelly could respond, a nurse stepped forward. “Everyone, may I have your attention please?” Her call was in vain to the bustle of the now full waiting room. Kelly glanced at her before calling at the top of his voice. “Listen up!”
The emergency room fell to silence almost immediately. She smiled gratefully at Kelly before turning to address everyone else. “All right, we are going to have a very full day here and I understand none of you feel well. But we’re going to need help from you as well as patience. If you’re here because of the ammonia leak…”
My attention trailed off as I noticed a patient get up and make his way nearer to her. My gut gave an uneasy churn as I watched him and I glanced over at Kelly but he wasn’t paying attention to me any longer.
The man dragged a chair towards him, stepping onto it. The nurse had now noticed him. “Sir, not yet, please. I need everyone…”
He swayed a little before he looked at everyone. “If you thought Ebola was a nightmare, I am the apocalypse!”
My eyes caught the grenade in his hand. “Kelly!” I shouted, as the man pulled out the pin.
“Death to all Americans. You’re all dead in two weeks!”
Kelly spun around as I saw Casey exit the treatment room that he had been in.
“Allahu akbar!” he screamed.
I watched in horror as Kelly sprinted towards him, pushing the nurse out of the way and flinging the man onto the ground, the sounds of the explosion drowning out my voice screaming my friend’s name.
----
The aftermath of the explosion was nothing but chaos. I heard firefighters running around, trying to contain the panic, as well as the people who were trying to run out of the emergency room.
“Hey, you okay?” I looked up.
“Y/N?” Will asked again when I didn’t respond.
“Yeah, I think so.” His eyes raked over me. “Let me take a look.” I let Will do what he needed to do and answered questions that he asked me. Satisfied that I wasn’t seriously hurt, he squeezed my shoulder. “Stay here,” he instructed before heading over to another badly injured patient.
I could hear several instructions being called out but only one caught my attention.
“Hey, hey over here! It’s Severide!”
My head snapped up and I clambered to my feet. As everyone came around him, calling his name. Sylvie grabbed his wrist, “It’s a weak pulse.”
Will quickly rushed over. “Let me see.”
Feeling his pulse at his neck, Will looked up. “No. Black tag him. He’s gone.”
I felt my heart drop into my gut. Even I knew what that meant.
Peter spun around to look at Will. “What?”
Will met Peter’s gaze. “The percentages are very low that he’ll…”
A look of rage passed Peter’s face. “I don’t give a damn about percentages.”
Will faltered and I reached out to touch his shoulder, my voice shaking a little. “Will… please…”
Will glanced at me before looking back at Peter. “No problem. Grab a gurney.” I watched as they busied putting Kelly onto a gurney, my heart giving another uncomfortable squeeze as I heard Casey report back to their fire chief outside.
I wasn’t sure how long I stood there in a daze, long after they had wheeled Kelly away. “Hey,” I felt a hand on my arm. I turned to face the nurse who had been trying to control the crowd before the explosion. “Are you okay?”
I nodded, before shrugging. “You’re April, right?” I asked her, as she looked at me quizzically before smiling.
“Yeah, I’ve heard a lot about you from Kelly. I’m Y/N.” I motioned in the direction of the treatment room Kelly was now in. She smiled back but glanced at the cut on my forehead. “Let’s just take care of this, okay?”
April helped to plaster a band-aid on my forehead, commenting that it was a miracle I wasn’t that badly hurt.
----
(Jay’s POV)
I turned into the hospital, climbing out of my car before picking up my phone to dial Y/N’s number.
Pick up, come on.
As the ringing died out, I desperately tried Will’s number. “Are you in there?”
“I am. Listen, the guy who blew himself up in here said he had something worse than Ebola.”
I froze. “What, like, he’s spreading it with this?” The pit in my stomach was expanding.
Will affirmed it. “Yeah, every single one of us in here has been in contact with him.” I could almost feel the fear bubbling up inside of me.
“Who is he?” I demanded.
Will’s response didn’t help. “No idea. Do us all a favour and find out, would you?”
“Will, wait…” The line went dead before I could ask him anything else.
In desperation, I dialled her number again, hoping she would answer.
---
(Y/N POV)
Thanking April, I got up as she moved on to help Will and Gabriela with another patient.
As I stood, I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket, exhaling a breath as I stared at Jay’s name flashing back at me.
“Jay?” I answered.
“Tell me you’re not in there.” I could hear Jay’s voice laced with worry.
“Yeah, I am. Sorry.” I replied, looking around at the carnage.
“Damn it.” He cursed under his breath.
Even in this situation, I could imagine the look on his face. “Jay, I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”
I could hear him sigh. “Look, Will is there too, so…”
I interrupted him. “Yeah, I know. He’s looked me over already, okay? Don’t worry, I’ll see you soon.”
“Y/N…” I could hear his reluctance.
“Jay… you do what you got to do to get us out of here.” I paused. “I love you.”
Jay let out another breath on his end. “Be safe. I love you.”
We hung up and I headed towards a corner of the room, squatting next to a mother and daughter when a part of the ceiling came crashing down, as the girl to scream in fright.
I turned to her. “Hey, what’s your name, sweetheart?” I eyed Otis who ran over armed with an extinguisher to fight the flames and I continued to talk to her, successfully distracting her from the fire. Her mother smiled in thanks at me and I just smiled back. “It’s going to be alright.” I reassured her, my eyes falling again on the treatment room Kelly had been wheeled into, not sure if I was reassuring her or myself.
I looked up again as some firefighters entered the emergency room with ladders and extra extinguishers, knowing this wasn’t a good sign. They clambered up the ladders, changing extinguishers the moment they emptied one. April was going around the room trying to reassure everyone and I squeezed the little girl’s hand and smiled at her.
“Fire’s out!”, “All clear!” The firefighters shouted, clambering down from the ladders.
---
(Jay’s POV)
I stood next to Adam, surveying the computer in front of us inside the makeshift tent we were stationed in.
“Detective.”
I turned to glance in the direction of the voice of Sharon Goodwin, noting the couple following behind her.
“The parents of…”
She didn’t need to say more. I motioned to a few chairs. “Hi. Please have a seat.”
“Is there anything you can tell us?”
The man looked up with pleading eyes. “He was a smart boy. Always nice, helpful. This country has given our family so much. How could this have happened?”
I looked away for a moment. “He claimed to be infected with something similar to Ebola.”
They looked up in horror, as the man closed his eyes, almost as if in defeat. “From his work.”
I frowned, “What do you mean, from his work?” Adam shifted his weight.
“He was working at BHO Labs. They study infectious diseases.”
I looked at Adam. “We got to get somebody down there right now.”
Adam nodded, “I’m on it.”
I turned back to the parents, “What else can you tell me? Anything about who he might have been involved with, planned this with?”
I needed to focus on this. I needed to get them out of there.
---
(Y/N POV)
Casey stopped in front of me. “How we doing?”
I nodded back at him. He glanced at the mother and daughter next to me. “I’m working on getting some food and water in here. Okay?” He smiled before getting up, patting my shoulder.
I watched his retreating back but was distracted by someone calling out to him. “Hey fireman!”
I watched as Casey turned towards the man, who towered over him. “What’s the latest?” he demanded.
Casey frowned. “Everyone’s doing all they can.”
The man’s voice rose again. “What the hell does that mean? No one is telling us anything!”
I flinched; shouting wasn’t something I handled very well.
Casey moved towards him, trying to ask him to calm down. He seemed to give up the fight against Casey, squatting down next to the counter but the next minute, I heard Gabby’s voice, “Matt!” as the big guy swung a pipe towards Casey.
I pushed myself further back into the wall, shutting my eyes, hearing the scuffling sounds. If everyone would just calm the hell down and focus on what mattered, the faster we could probably get out of here. I focused my thoughts on Jay, trying to even out my breathing so that I could prevent a panic attack.
“You doing okay?” Will asked, grabbing my elbow.
My eyes snapped open, darting towards the other side of the room where Casey and April seemed to have handled the situation pretty well.
“Come on, why don’t you come with me.” Will muttered, pulling me up and leading me into a room. Herrmann was inside talking to a doctor, who Will introduced as Diane Claman.
I stood in the corner of the room as Will’s phone rang, and I heard Jay’s voice on the other end of the line. Even at this distance, it felt reassuring.
“He was working with Marburg, he injected himself with it.” Will repeated to Diane.
“What’s Marburg?” Herrmann asked, frowning a little.
Diane looked at us. “It’s a viral haemorrhagic fever. The Soviets developed it as a biological weapon.” Herrmann and I exchanged a look as she turned back to Will. “Ask them which strain of the Marburg virus.”
“Which strain?” Will’s voice broke the silence again.
“Ravn.” He repeated.
Jay must have said something and Will hung up with an “All right.”
Diane looked up again. “Okay, so now I just have to see if he was past the incubation period and actually infectious.”
For the first time, I spoke up. “And if he was past the incubation period?”
Will looked at me and shook his head slightly.
“It means Aleem was a walking biological weapon.” A grim silence fell across the room.
----
I had wandered to where the rest of the firefighters had gathered, outside the treatment room where Kelly was in.
I could see the doctor extract a piece of shrapnel from Kelly and just as I was about to breathe a sigh of relief, a spurt of blood shot out from Kelly’s open wound. I heard Sylvie’s voice, “Arterial bleeder!”
I bit my lip as I felt someone take my hand. Gabby gave me a small smile, squeezing my hand. We turned back to the room, as the machine slowly showed Kelly’s vitals stabilising and I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
A few minutes later, Herrmann emerged from another treatment room, looking dazed. Everyone looked up at him. “What is it?”
Herrmann let a small smile grace his lips. “Not contagious.” The sense of relief flooded the room as Diane stepped out. “Influenza A tested positive, but the Marburg virus didn’t have time to incubate. Whatever he had in his body died with him.”
The sigh of relief was audible as everyone hugged each other.
Will looked at me and smiled, nodding. “Open up the ER!” he announced, looking around.
---
(Jay’s POV)
I heard the vague sounds of the firefighters cheering outside and looked at Adam.
He nodded, motioning for me to head outside. I patted him on the back, jogging towards the ER, looking above all the heads to see if I could spot her.
--
(Y/N’s POV)
The only thing I wanted to do was to get out of here.
I looked towards Casey.
“Severide’s fine. We won’t be able to see him until tomorrow, anyway. Go.” He reassured me, guiding me towards the exit.
I stumbled out, wincing slightly at the bruises all over my body but peered.
I spotted him almost instantly, the worried lines across his face, scanning the crowd.
“Jay.” I breathed, heading straight for him. I crashed into his arms as I heard Jay’s sigh of relief in my ear. “Oh my god.” He muttered, pulling me into him, wrapping his arms around my body and cradling my head. I could feel how relieved he was as he sank his body into mine.
Quickly, he pulled away, surveying me at arm’s length. “Are you hurt?” he demanded.
I smiled, putting my hand against his cheek. “Bruised, but nothing serious.” I smiled.
“Thank God.” He pulled me back into his arms, holding me tightly as if he was never going to let me go.
Gently he broke away again, kissing me on the forehead. “Come on.” He muttered, gently leading me towards the white tents that I could now see.
“Halstead, get out of here.” Antonio appeared in front of us.
Jay paused, studying Antonio.
“I got you. Go on, get out of here.” Antonio winked at me and I nodded back at him gratefully.
“Thanks.” Halstead and Antonio fist bumped each other and Jay helped me into his car.
We didn’t say much on the ride back but Jay never let go of my hand.
We drove straight to his apartment and I headed straight for the shower, my bruised body welcoming the relief of warm water. Once we were cleaned up, Jay crawled into bed with me and I welcomed it, glad the day was over.
Jay put his chin on the top of my head. “You really scared me today.” He whispered.
My arms wrapped around his torso, I looked up at him.
“If I lost you…” his voice trailed off.
I leaned further into his embrace. “Honestly? I was scared too. Kelly got hurt… I was afraid I was going to lose him… afraid I wasn’t going to be able to see you again… I…” I paused before continuing, “Thanks for being here, Jay.”
Jay tilted my chin gently up so that I was looking at him and smiled. “Always.” Leaning forward, Jay pulled me into a deep kiss, which I leaned into, grateful that this day had ended as well as it could have.

destiel fic recs nobody asked for
I’ve read a lot of fanfiction since november and I needed to express it somehow. so. here goes a HUGE rec list.
no order at all, huh. canonverse, if not said otherwise. bold for my favorites.
part 2 | part 3 | part 4
part 1/?
first and second date (9k and 13k, t/e) very healthy s15 deancas relationship, dean goes to therapy (as he should), must-read
he bids good-bye to distance (3k, e) purgatory smut, you know the drill
understanding your body in ten easy steps (13k, e) i love this dean so much, a little bit insecure and so vulnerable and caring! such a sweet fic!
the mirror (25k, m) this one actually made me sob; dean travels though alternate realities and meets...a lot of other deans and castiels
where the weeds take root (30k, e) this one is in my top-5, i guess. please, just GO READ. they live in the country, built a chicken coop, smoke weed and figure out their relationship. all of my favorite headcanons in one fic. and with gorgeous illustrations!!
a turn of the earth (95k, m) heartbreaking, but with a happy ending. timetravel, cas meets pre-series dean.
an idiot's guide to a successful love confession in two words or less (4k, e) okay. dean confesses to cas using thee mixtape. what more should i say?
crazy diamonds (25k, e) dean from 2008 swaps places with dean from 2018. so cute, so sweet, but SO SAD. but good sad. not hopeless sad. don’t wanna spoil anything, but i was sitting in silence after finishing this one, like, for half an hour.
a room of one’s one (95k, e) a classic one. ALL THE KINKS!! just a little bit of angst, but mostly very sweet. wing!kink
the first five times (43k, e, mcd) oh. this one. endverse. very dark and depressing. but you know, they love each other. so much. and it describes my favorite concert about endverse. i cried like a baby. yeah. this kind of sad.
you can keep holding on (352k, e) i love this one so, so much. i adore this cas and this dean. they are precious. there is one thing that author preferred not to include in tags (and i get why), but at the time it was. um. hard. still was worth it tho. but be careful. pretty heavy themes in this one. but such a HAPPY ENDING! ah.
dean (and cas') top 13 zepp traxx (82k, e) post-canon, road trip, led zeppelin, love love love
tall grass (58k, e) cas grows a garden!!!!!! found family on maximum! sex scene like WOAH. hot. last few paragraphs are such a beautiful prose. i keep coming back and rereading them.
build a home (20k, t) another post-canon found family fic. yeah. i have a soft spot for them.
that’s me in the corner (9k, e) “heaven can't wait” fic. i love all this fanfiction gap stories. this on is so *chefs kiss*.
welcome to pine shores! (21k, e) and another post-canon story! can’t stop won't stop. they are old and own a motel. and still are dancing around each other. huh. they’re such idiots *fondly*
every story has to start somewhere (27k, e) i must confess. i have a soft spot for dean in denial trope. and this one is all about dean trying not to be gay. spoiler: he fails. lol.
sunshine (8k, g) usually straight dean is ooc for me, you know. but this one is a good exception. it’s just so sweet and tender and all about their profound bond. yep.
enough (1k, t) as grey ace person myself, ace cas is so very important for me.
the mantra (3k, g) PLEASE READ IT. post 12.12. i reread it regularly. so tender. oh my god. i have no words. just. go read.
scratchmarks (12k, e) one of this smut fics, where smut is not about smut at all. this is 2009!dean/cas/2014!dean. sad, but so beautiful.
may i? (12k, e) post s15 purgatory fic. how it should have been.
profoundly bonded (by law) (20k, e) firstly: sobsicles is currently one of my favorite destiel authors. so. cas asks dean to marry him. dean have no reason to decline. such a sweet domestic fic. dean is so dumb (we all know that).
the sum of my regrets (20k, m) dean goes to the past and meets cas’ female vessel. nothing happens between them back there, if you're worried. but dean does come to the realization.
the girlfriend experience (15k, e). another classic one. no words needed.
twenty dollars (15k, e) cas-centric, post gas-n-sip. he tries to survive and has no other choice but to turn tricks. poor baby. i wanted to hug him so bad while reading this.
until the lost become the found (35k, e) such a unique story! i’ve never knew that i needed it so much until this fic. dean. cas. and endverse!cas. yep. you got it right. the ending!! the sex scene (omg)!! perfect characterization of endverse!cas. and you know, he deserves a lot of love. all the love. it may be not everyone’s cup of tea, but please, give this fic a chance.

“Bitch, if you do this, you are so dumb,” Jamila yelled over the group FaceTime. Lauren and Siobhan nodded while Karesha rolled her eyes at Nina.
Desiree stated, “You know how I feel about men butttt, you being dumb.”
“Jamila, do something dumb and take a picture with that guy you told us you fucked. I thought you said he was a hockey player. Distract the haters from Nina,” Karesha suggested.
Lauren added, “That’s a good idea.”
“Hold up, hold up, I told everyone about him because I DON’T plan on fucking him again. That dick was way tooooo good. Hell no,” Jamila exclaimed.
Everyone snickered after that comment and Jamila pouted. Nina took in a deep breath. “I-I, I just can’t. I got people calling me all kinds of names, bitches stopping by my job taking pics, people. Then I got people who are being extra friendly to me and I just want to hide. Now, my lil cousin showed me that I got fangirls on tumblr! The hell??”
Jamila grimaced. “That’s part of fame.”
“I didn’t ask for this shit! He DIDN’T EVEN ASK ME TO BE HIS GIRLFRIEND AND NOW THE WORLD IS TREATING ME LIKE I’M HIS GIRL,” Nina yelled.
The chat got quiet for a couple minutes before Siobhan said, “Well, that was dumb on his part. So excited to finally get a chance that he’s fucking it up. Men.”
Desiree snickered before her face turned serious. “I think our girl caught feelings too. The Nina I know normally doesn’t have to make a decision with her girls about dropping a guy. She just does it.”
“But she’s telling us because she really doesn’t want to,” Lauren said with a smirk.
Nina glared at her friends. They weren’t getting it. But before she could say anything else, Siobhan quietly said, “I hope you aren’t comparing yourself to his teammates’ girlfriends and wives. But I think you are.”
Sighing, NIna said, “I met them and while they were mostly nice, I’m a milk dud in a sea of milk. I stick out too much. Despite what they are all saying, Sidney’s just messing with me until he finds another, more suitable blonde.”
Nina’s friends all stared at Nina over the FaceTime chat before erupting. Then Lauren finally said over the furor, “I understand… because yeah, same shit with my ex. I was good enough until he met the perfect white girl of his dreams, no offense Siobhan. But, remember that night when that guy followed me? Trust me, I saw the way Sidney fucking Crosby was looking at you. If he’s looking just to play you before finding someone else, fuck, I’ll buy you a fucking Birkin.”
“Whoa,” Jamila and Desiree both uttered. Lauren was the stingiest of all of them so for her to talk about spending thousands of dollars on something, it had to be real.
“Yeah, that sounds nice and everything but I need a break from all of this to recalibrate,” Nina finally said. “And we were supposed to be planning our trip since we couldn’t go anywhere overseas the past two years anyway.”
“Okay, let's talk about places to go because I want to go to Thailand,” Desiree replied, allowing Nina to change the subject.
Nina let out a breath as everyone started talking about places to visit. Before their conversation tonight, she was sure that breaking it off was a good idea. Now, she was just confused.
**
“Hi, pretty girl,” Sidney drawled over the phone.
Nina couldn’t help the shy smile come on her face at the pet name. “Hi, Sidney.”
Sidney frowned. Nina usually called him Sid now, Sidney Crosby if she was annoyed, Mr. Crosby if she was feeling sassy. Something felt off but he decided to ignore it for now. “Mario and Nathalie wanted to know if you were available for dinner next Sunday. Nathalie would love to meet you.”
“Hmm, I have an early class Monday morning so I’d just do dinner and that’s it,” NIna said.
Sidney inwardly sighed. Maybe Nina was off because she decided to go back to school and she was starting to get in the middle of the semester. Maybe that was it. “So, do you want to come? I’ll pick you up and drop you off?”
“Just that, I need to be able to think on Monday so you can’t stay over,” Nina joked.
Sidney snickered. “I’m sorry baby, I’ll be good and keep my hands to myself.”
“Bullshit.”
“I’ll keep my hands to myself, pretty girl, but we both know how much you love it when I touch you. Your skin is so soft and you feel so good.”
Nina gasped and Sidney felt like he heard her try to hold back a moan. He continued, “Especially when you make those little sounds-”
“Bye Sid,” Nina said firmly, trying to keep her mind from going into the gutter. It didn’t work when he laughed and she felt her core throb. Not even that filthy and she was ready to spread her legs for him. Nina was disappointed in herself.
Sidney responded, “Bye, pretty girl.”
**
Sidney could tell that Nina was still off during dinner with Mario and Nathalie. She was herself; sparkling, kind, and sweet but Sidney could tell that she was going through the motions. He was feeling a bit frustrated; he didn’t know what was wrong so he could fix it. But something was wrong.
Nina was truly enjoying herself as she talked with Mario and Nathalie but it felt like something was going on that she didn’t get. Like, the way they were looking at her, it felt like she was missing something. At the same time, the Lemieuxs’ were the quintessential hosts and Nina felt honored to have even stepped foot in their home, let alone had dinner with them.
Later that night, after Sidney and Mario had stepped out to talk hockey, Nina rubbed her eyes. She suddenly felt super tired and she didn’t know why.
“You look tired,” Nathalie commented.
Nina shrugged before replying, “It’s been a lot going on.”
“Why do I feel like Sidney, who is normally good and planning and looking at all sides, just jumped into everything with you?”
Nina looked at Nathalie. Nathalie had a sympathetic expression on her face. “It’s overwhelming, isn’t it?”
“Very,” Nina said as she looked at her nails. “I don’t even know what is going on between Sidney and I anyway.”
Nathalie had a shocked expression on her face as she stated, “I had the impression that you two are a couple?”
“Everyone says we are a couple but I was never asked about being in a couple,” Nina grumbled.
Nathalie wanted to shake Sidney. Even though she had heard only good things about Nina, Nathalie was prepared to judge her with a clean slate. After tonight, Nathalie really liked her, especially her independent spirit, something that would be very necessary for her dealing with Sidney and his life. But now, Nathalie really wanted to shake that boy hard because like most men, he put the cart before the horse. If she was a betting woman, Nathalie would bet that Nina was going to run screaming any moment now.
Nina continued, “I like him but.. I really don’t like him right now, do you understand?”
“I totally understand. Mario told me about all of the internet hate you’re receiving. I’m lucky that the internet didn’t exist the way it does now when Mario and I first started dating and got married,” Nathalie commiserated.
Nina took in several deep breaths. “I know everyone has said to ignore what other people are saying but, I’m just overwhelmed, you know.”
Nathalie decided that she was going to shake Sidney the next time she saw him after tonight. ‘Poor girl,’ she thought.
Before the conversation could continue, the guys came back in and Nathalie saw Nina shut down and paste a pretty smile on her face. Nathalie sent Mario a look of concern as she watched Nina grip her glass tight.
Sidney noticed the same thing as Nathalie when he returned with Mario. As he made their way towards Nina’s apartment, Sidney asked, “Is everything okay? You seemed stressed.”
Nina took in a deep breath. It was either now or never. “This is going too fast, I need a break.”
Sidney flushed, his hand shaking around the steering wheel. Trying to keep his voice level, he asked, “What do you mean you need a break?”
Nina took in a deep breath. “This is too much. I agreed to go out with you once and now, I’ve been introduced to all your teammate’s significant others, met Mrs. Lemieux and it’s like you’re treating me like I'm your girlfriend.”
“But you are!”
“How?! How the hell am I your girlfriend when you never ever asked me? When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me,” Nina fumed. “You put me in a situation I didn’t even agree to. I have people coming to my job just to try to get a picture of me; people who would stake out my apartment if I didn’t have a doorman and security in my building. Your team’s PR is monitoring my social media accounts because every other dm i get is the n-word.”
Sidney paled and Nina continued, “Yeah, you just realized you did all this and you didn’t even ask if I wanted to be your girlfriend.”
“I’m sorry but fuck, I’ve always wanted you to be my girlfriend. I just assumed you felt the same,” Sidney protested.
“Sidney, it’s just TOO much. I need time to process, I need a break. A break from you,” Nina said firmly.
Sidney resisted the urge to yell at Nina. Yes, he fucked up by not asking her to be his girlfriend before everything but at the same time, he just wanted her to listen. But Nina seemed like she didn’t want to listen to anything. So instead, he asked, “How long do you want a break?”
“I don’t know… I mean, it could be a couple of weeks,” Nina replied.
Sidney sat there stone faced as he drove. He didn’t know what to say. Sidney could feel his heart breaking into two for the first time ever and it was painful as hell. It was even more painful than when the Red Wings lifted the Cup in his first ever Stanley Cup finals.
Nina picked at her nails. She thought she would feel relief but now, she felt worse than before. The silence felt deafening and oppressive until they reached her building. Sidney finally said, “I’ll give you space.”
“Thank you,” Nina quietly responded. Letting herself out of the car quietly, Nina sniffled. Holding herself together, she was able to just make it inside of her apartment before she started to cry.
**
Karesha stared at her friend, not sure if she should shake her or hug her. Nina was in her work clothes, a fake smile on her face as she let Karesha into her apartment. Terrible Tess and Steely came running up to Karesha. After giving the pets some love, Karesha asked, “What did you do?”
Nina looked to the side. “I told him I needed a break.”
Sucking her lower lip into her mouth, Karesha stared at Nina again. She needed to shake her, definitely shake her.
“Why?”
Nina closed her eyes before flopping on her couch. Karesha sat next to her and Nina put her hands over her face. “Look at me and look at him! Sidney’s fucking rich, famous, and such an awesome hockey player. I drive an used Lexus RX, I’m broke as fuck compared to him, and I’m not the kind of woman who ends up with a guy like him,” Nina mumbled.
Karesha closed her eyes and counted to ten. Patience wasn’t her strong suit, especially with her friend who was normally the most cool, calm, and collected out of all of them. “Nina… trust me, you know I’ve done all kinds of shit. I’ve done shit that I’ll take to the grave with me. So trust me when I say, Sidney really, really likes you.”
Karesha almost said “loves you” but she felt like that would have been too much as Nina shook her head. Nina said, “He probably just wanted to fuck me because I was unavailable for so long.”
“Girl… if he just wanted to say he smashed, he wouldn’t have taken you to dinner with one of his best friends, the Pens org wouldn’t have gotten involved when people were calling you names online, especially Mario fucking Lemieux. He fucking told you that the Lemieuxs had invited you two for dinner before you told him you needed a break. You’re more than a fucking fling.”
“Yeah, he’d do all that and then dump me when he met someone more appropriate,” Nina argued.
Karesha shook Nina before yelling, “Stop going online where the dumb fangirls and the haters are trying to fuck with your mind. It’s all bullshit. That man would do anything for you.”
Nina sat there, stony-faced while Karesha talked. ‘Like a fucking Aries,’ she thought. ‘So fucking stubborn.’
“Anyway, I brought cake and let's watch some trashy shit. Which Real Housewives are we watching, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, or old school New Jersey,” Karesha finally asked, changing the subject.
Nina decided, “I’m in the mood for ratchet so Atlanta. But I can’t watch too much, I have to study.”
“Study for what,” Karesha asked as she opened a bottle of wine.
“I decided to go back for my PhD in rehabilitative science,” Nina replied. “Two more years of school but I’m excited.”
Karesha took a sip of her wine as Nina bit into a cupcake. “When were you going to tell anyone?”
“I had told Sidney-,” Nina began before she stopped. Nina closed her eyes when she realized the first person she told about her plans to get her PhD was Sidney before telling her family and her friends.
“Umm hmm.”
Karesha gave Nina a sly glance. She decided not to push it for now but it was obvious to her that Nina was lying to herself. Karesha knew her friend; unlike herself, Lauren, and Jamila, Nina tended to fall slowly but when she fell, she fell hard. So, in Karesha’s mind, Nina had to have started falling for Sidney back when she was working at the Lemieux Center, that was the only reason why Nina went out with him after she finally fucked him. Unlike the rest of them, Nina was the best at separating sex from feelings which had made her the queen of one night stands when they were younger. Sidney Crosby had quickly become more than a one night stand which convinced Karesha that Nina had feelings.
Even though their conversation turned to the TV, Karesha made some mental plans to help her friend get back with her man, even though Nina wouldn’t admit to herself that he was her man.
**
Two Weeks Later
Sidney really wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone but some of the Pirates had come to the game. It was always good to be friendly with fellow athletes. But he had been in a funk ever since Nina said she wanted a break. Sidney was trying his best to give Nina space but she hadn’t even responded to his texts or calls. It felt like she was trying to break up with him and it hurt. At the same time, he didn’t want to push her. Nathalie had yelled at him and told him he had gone way too fast. But now, he felt like he was drowning and there was nothing to save him.
So, Sidney pasted in his best PR smile and mentally counted the minutes until when he could leave and drink his frustration away. Then a short Black woman stepped in front of him. Sidney bit back a curse as she looked him up and down. Then she bluntly said, “you look just as fucking horrible as Nina does.”
Geno, Tanger, and Rusty all winced. No one has brought Nina up since Sidney said she wanted a break. But their captain was going through it and it sucked. They all just hoped Sidney wouldn’t unload on the woman who they all knew was dating one of the Pirates.
Then she smiled and said, “My name is Karesha Lewis and I’m going to go and shake some sense into my bestie. Because she’s being a fucking idiot. God, she’s being an idiot right now.”
Gregory started, “Resha, what are you doing?”
But Karesha gave Sidney a sly look. “Nina’s at home, eating ice cream and torturing herself with the idea that you’ve already got a hot blonde over her and you, frankly, look like shit. But for some reason, she thinks bullshit on the internet is true and that you never really liked her.”
Sidney’s expression went from annoyance to shock to fury. “I gotta go,” he bit out.
Karesha watched Sidney go, waving. Kris looked at her, incredulous. “Do you know what you did?”
“Trust me, Nina’s too stubborn to admit she’s wrong yet and I decided to have pity on The Kid. Don’t worry, I’m going to give the best matron of honor speech ever.”
Geno snickered. “I guess Sid taking maintenance day tomorrow.”
**
Notes for her class were all over her table but Nina’s mind was elsewhere. It had been two weeks since she told Sidney she wanted a break, two long weeks. And she was pissed at herself because she was missing the fucking idiot.
Nina missed his texts, his calls, the way he listened to her when she talked. She missed his laugh, his single-mind superstitions he followed on every gameday. The random food deliveries, as if Sidney knew she had skipped a meal for work or class or homework. The book suggestions, singing along to horrible pop music, shit that Nina knew he didn’t do around other people. Then… the sex.
Nina groaned, flopping face first into her sofa pillows. She was sure she was probably missing him more than usual because she was on her period. Today was day four after three days of a heavy flow, a blessing because it meant Nina wasn’t pregnant and that was always a threat even with condoms. “I’m just emotional,” she mumbled as she lifted herself off her face and returned to sitting upright.
Managing to return to studying, Nina was jolted out of her reverie by the ringing of her doorbell. Knowing she didn’t order anything this Saturday night, she pulled out her trusty baseball bat while Steely stood on alert next to her. Looking into the peephole, Nina inwardly groaned when she saw Sidney standing outside of her place. “Fuck,” Nina exclaimed as she opened the door, ushering Sidney in because the idea of someone selling pictures of him standing outside of her apartment because she wouldn’t let him in was more disturbing than ignoring him.
Sidney came in, Steely began to yap in excitement while Terrible Tess jumped off her seat on top of the window sill to walk around Sidney’s ankles. “Hi,” Sidney said.
Nina felt a bit bad as she looked at Sidney. He looked good as ever, his salt and pepper hair hair curling attractively on his forehead and neck. But she could see the bags under his eyes and it was obvious that Sidney was keeping it together enough for the ice but he was definitely suffering.
“Hi,” Nina replied, putting her baseball bat back in place.
Sidney looked at it before blinking his eyes in surprise. “You were really going to hit me with that?”
“I’m living alone and it’s 11pm on a Saturday night and I didn’t order anything? Yeah!”
“Thank you for not hitting me,” Sidney said sincerely.
Nina shrugged before crossing her arms over her chest. “What brings you around here?”
“Do you really believe I was just playing with you, using you until I find someone supposedly more appropriate,” Sidney asked with disbelief.
“I-,” Nina started but Sidney interrupted her. “Did you really think I wanted to fuck you until I found someone else? That I just wanted you because I couldnt have you for so long?”
“Yeah,” Nina finally replied with a shrug. “Look at me and look at you and look at everyone else around you. I stick out.”
“Because you’re Black, so?”
Nina looked at the ceiling, ready to rip Sidney a new one after that statement. Closing her eyes, she counted to ten so that she could make sure she cursed him out without crying. Then Sidney said, “I mean, I’m pretty fucking clueless when it comes to race but fuck, you think that I was planning to use you because you’re Black and when I got tired, I’d go back to “my” kind,” using air quotes around the word my.
“You wouldn’t be the first,” Nina said.
Sidney closed his eyes. Emotions weren’t the easiest for him but he knew he couldn’t fuck this up. Moving closer to Nina, he grasped her hand. “Look at me, pretty girl.”
Nina closed her eyes before looking at Sidney. Sidney quietly stated, “No one has made me feel the way that you do. You are one of the kindest, intelligent, sweet, and loving women I’ve ever met. You are the literal sunshine and I’d be the biggest fucking fool to dump you for someone else now that I’ve actually had the chance to be with you.”
“And you… all this shit got dumped on me and you didn’t even ask me to be your girlfriend,” Nina complained as Sidney rubbed her hand.
Squeezing her hand, Sidney admitted, “I fucked up. I wanted to ask that first night but then we had to take care of your friend and I, I just kept forgetting to bring it up. But, I want you to be my girlfriend.”
Sidney already knew that he wanted Nina to be more than his girlfriend but he already fucked up enough.
Nina couldn’t help it, she had to ask, “What about with the team and everything?”
“I invested well and if I lose endorsements, fuck it. As for the team, Mario, Nathalie and the guys love you so that doesn’t matter,” Sidney firmly stated.
After a pause, Sidney grabbed Nina’s other hand. He softly said, “I understand if you don’t want to date me, I’m sorry for going too fast. But I’d like to try again.”
“Honestly, I gotta think about it,” Nina admitted. “You’re a lot and being with you will be a lot. I’ll have to give up a lot. I have to think about how to make it work, not just for me but for my family.”
Sidney nodded. He was a bit disappointed but he also understood because he remembered how when he first became famous, it was a lot. The pressure as a teen, then making it to the NHL, the changes for his family. Sidney totally understood what Nina meant.
Nina leaned up, pressing a kiss to Sidney’s cheek. “I’m not mad at you, at least right now. But I can’t promise you anything except I’ll call you by Wednesday,” Nina promised.
Sidney nodded before Terrible Tess started meowing. Picking up the cat, he petted her.
“I still can’t believe she likes you so much,” Nina muttered.
Sidney shrugged. “She knows I’m special,” he joked.
“Give me my cat!”
Nina opened her arms and Sidney passed Tess to Nina. Awkwardly, Sidney said, “I guess I should go.”
“Yes, you should because I need to study,” Nina quipped. “I have a paper to write.”
“Ugh.” Sidney wrinkled his nose. Papers were awful. “Talk to you later?”
Nina said, “Yes, we will. Bye Sid.”
“Bye Nina,” Sidney said as he opened the door. He couldn’t help but grin when he heard Nina close and lock the door behind him. She called him Sid, that meant something good.
**
Nina slept fitfully after working on her paper. After seeing Sidney last night, she realized just how much she missed him. Nina had been that close to sliding to her knees to blow him when she saw Sidney in his suit. But that would have been a very bad idea so she didn’t do it.
Drawing a t-chart on a piece of paper, Nina labeled one side “Pros” and the other side “Cons”. As she started to list the pros and the cons, Nina realized the list of pros was longer than the list of cons. Rubbing her forehead, Nina murmured to herself, “I’m going to have to make yoga a definite part of my life now.”
Decision made, Nina reached for her phone.

last thing: welcome back hyunjin I missed you! skz ot8!
“Y/n,” his low and steady voice echoed around the pillars of the parking lot, “what are you doing here?”
“I’m looking for my friend.” You simply answered, slowly taking short steps backwards. It was best to not tell anybody that Yoojin was injured.
“Is she here? I’ll help you find her.” His eyebrows furrowed as he took quick strides towards you.
“No- that’s- it’s okay. I’m uhm, I’ll just try finding her myself.” You clenched your shaking fists. “Thank you for offering though.” You quickly added, not wanting to come off as rude to your boss.
“Y/n. Why do you keep avoiding me?” Manager Kim grabbed your shoulder with one hand. You felt the tips of his fingers dig through your jacket. The blend of cigarettes and cologne wafted past your nostrils.
“Manager Kim, please, I really need to get going.” You begged as you heard your voice start to waver. Why couldn’t the word ‘stop’ just come out of your mouth?
Manager Kim didn’t seem to care as he simply pressed his fingers harder on your shoulder, tightening his grip. He took a step closer, tipping his head down to look at you as he exhaled through his mouth. The stench of cigarettes became stronger.
“Yesterday, on your first day, I’ve been nothing but nice to you. Y/n, I am your boss. Stop avoiding me.” He spoke through clenched teeth. His words became quieter and quieter as his monologue progressed.
You had no idea what to do. It was obvious by now that Yoojin wasn’t in this parking lot as you would have heard her by now. The sun was setting fast, and the lot was basically empty, save the lot attendant — who was busy watching a movie on his phone when you first spoke to him. However, this attendant was your best bet. If you somehow managed to run past him, Manager Kim would most likely stop following you. This was your plan.
You quickly slipped out of your jacket, catching Manager Kim off guard. He lost grip of your shoulder, and the only thing he had a hold on was your now discarded jacket. Then, you made a run for it. You had only caught a glimpse of Manager Kim’s irate expression before adrenaline filled your muscles once again.
“Oh, you don’t run from me this time.” You heard him drop your jacket, then soon after, footsteps.
You didn’t have time to fixate on his movements as your only goal at the moment was to reach the attendant. You ran and ran, and after a short while, you saw the attendant’s post.
It was apparent that Manager Kim also noticed that there was another person nearby because you heard his footsteps gradually slow down and then come to a halt. However, you were too scared to turn back to confirm your suspicions and just kept running. Once you reached the front entrance of the parking lot — where the attendant was — you slowed down your running to make it appear as if nothing had happened. God knows the amount of slander you would’ve gotten in the office if you had gotten Manager Kim in trouble.
You tried to keep yourself composed as you left the parking lot, however, nothing could stop the uncontrollable shaking of your hands and the erratic beating of your heart. Once outside, your brain was in jumbles — what the hell just happened?
The wind nipped at your skin as you sprinted towards the familiar blue building. It was the only place you could think of to hide as you wait out Manager Kim. Usually, the man acted polite, if not a little standoffish, but there was something so sinister about his voice tonight that gave you an uncomfortable chill.
Finally nearing your office building, you held it out for a final push as you hurriedly entered the front doors. As soon as you were inside, you felt the adrenaline reach your body. You put your hands on your knees for support as you tried to catch your breaths. You still couldn’t process what just happened with Manager Kim.
“Y/n.” A hand touched your shoulder.
Instinctively, you flinched and wrapped your arms around your shoulder.
“Are you okay?” The hand immediately fell off your shoulder. You recognized this voice. It was Bang Chan.
It might have been the wave of relief rushing through you — or that you started to process what had just happened — but as soon as those words left his lips you couldn’t contain the tears rushing out of your eyes.
“Yeah, I’m okay.” You sniffed, turning away from him to wipe your tears away. It was so embarrassing that you were crying in front of somebody you just met. Moreover, you could sense people in the building starting to stare.
Bang Chan looked at you in confusion for a moment. “Did you want to take a walk? We can find a quieter place you can uhh…” He drifted off towards the end, scratching the back of his neck.
You simply nodded your head. Bang Chan gestured for you to follow him whilst making sure to keep his distance from you. You stared at the back of his hoodie as you mindlessly followed him in silence. He meandered through the building halls naturally and confidently, like he had been here his whole life. You sped up your steps to walk beside him, scared that somebody would somehow snatch you from behind. Bang Chan turned his head to check on you before continuing his trek.
He led you towards the familiar elevators that you took every morning so far, but this time, he pressed the button of an unfamiliar floor. This elevator ride was shorter than what you were used to, however you still felt the floating sensation that came with every elevator ride.
The elevator dinged, letting you know that the two of you had arrived. Bang Chan’s arms gestured for you to get off first, and so you did. He got off after you and started leading you to his destination. You walked in silence with your arms still crossed over your torso.
He kept up his pace, and soon, stopped in front of a door. Using a key card to unlock the door, he opened the door for you to go in first.
Although it was cozy, the room was small. With a desk on one side and a single black couch on the other, it was clear that this room wasn’t meant for a lot of people. You looked at the walls. Green, strange.
“Hold on, lemme just…” Bang Chan mumbleded as he rushed past you to the couch and tossed a shirt and an opened bag of chips out of the way. “Here, you can sit.”
You sat down. “Thanks.” You rasped.
“Did you want some water?” He asked.
“Yes, please.” You replied in a quiet voice, not wanting him to see that you cried — although it was really obvious by now.
He left in a flash, leaving you alone in the room. At least the door is locked. You thought.
The unnerving silence of the room left you alone with just your thoughts. Thoughts on Manager Kim, on how you cried in front of Bang Chan, of Yoojin. Yoojin!
You pulled out your phone and found yourself filled with worry again. You quickly dialled her contact number.
“Y/n?” A voice picked up in an almost confused manner.
“Yoojin, thank god. Are you okay? I went to where you said you were and couldn’t find you.”
“Oh my god, Y/n!” She suddenly bursted out. “I’m so, so sorry. I messed up the parking lot I was in with yours! I’m the world’s dumbest person. I don’t deserve your friendship.”
“Yoojin, it’s okay, mistakes happen. And friends always help each other.” You try to calm her down. “As long as you’re safe right now.”
“I am, thank you Y/n.” She sniffled. “But, you didn’t run into any trouble trying to find me right?”
You decided not to tell her about Manager Kim. She had a long day already, what with her injury. “I didn’t. You’ve got nothing to worry about.”
“Oh,” she said, “alright. In that case, I’ll go get some rest now. Goodbye Y/n.”
“Bye Yoojin, I hope you get well soon.” You hung up.
With Yoojin being safe, you had one less worry on your plate. However, now that you weren’t consumed by your worry for Yoojin, the only thought that you had was the looming threat of Manager Kim. What if he was still looking for me? You thought. What if he tries this on me again? What if I get fired?
The dark thoughts started to overwhelm you so much to the point where you couldn’t control your tears again. You put your face in your hands, silently begging yourself to stop crying. You were scared. Scared for your future, your safety, and your reputation.
“This place is so big, you’d think they’d place a few more vending machines…” Bang Chan abruptly interrupted your thoughts.
You flinched, startled.
“Hey, it’s okay, it’s just me.” He had that boyish grin on his face as he unscrewed the lid of the plastic water bottle before handing it to you.
You accepted the water and took a sip. “Sorry, I’m just—” You were scared to finish that sentence. If Bang Chan knew how rude you were to his boss, he could get you fired as well.
Bang Chan looked at you in confusion for a couple of seconds. “You know,” He started, “you don’t have to tell me what happened, but I’m here for you. We’re friends, remember?” He sat on the chair at the desk.
“Thank you, Bang Chan.” You smiled at him. “I appreciate it.”
“You have a nice smile.”
“What?” You knitted your eyebrows.
Bang Chan cleared his throat. “Nevermind, umm, do you wanna see what I’m working on?”
“Umm, sure.” You replied awkwardly.
Bang Chan got out of his chair and turned it around for you to sit in, which you did. He turned the chair around to face the monitor and leaned over you to log in to his computer. His bangs flopped in front of his eyes.
“This was that song I was talking about yesterday.” Bang Chan pressed a button, and a sound started to emit from the complicated looking software. It was a simple but nice beat, although all the audio clips and millions of random colours on the screen seemed to contradict that.
“There’s so many options on the screen, how do you know what you’re doing?”
“Honestly, it takes time to get used to. I’m still not sure what some of these settings do.” He scratched the back of his neck. “Do you wanna try it out?”
You nodded your head, eagerly. You had never seen something like this before. Bang Chan reached over you to take hold of the mouse. He scrolled through hundreds of folders before opening the one he was looking for.
“These are just random audio clips I usually use in songs,” he said, “you can drag them on the screen and it’ll be added in the song.”
You dragged a random audio clip to where he said so and clicked play. The song played, but with a very loud and badly timed bass in the middle. The both of you laughed, and you started to add more random clips to the song. Soon, the song became so cluttered with your add-ons that it started sounding unrecognizable.
“It’s so bad.” You laughed, turning your head around. Bang Chan was already looking at you. His expression was unreadable. You looked back at him.
Silence.
After a moment, you realized that you were just looking at him with no words. You cleared your throat, turning back to the monitor. “What if I add this one?”
You dragged a random audio to the beginning of the song and played it. As soon as the song started, the audio clip interrupted everything else. It was an incredibly loud audio of Bang Chan yelling ‘Stray Kids’. The two of you bursted out laughing.
The two of you stayed in that room for hours, just playing around on his editing software and with his equipment. He showed you how he made new songs, and how he would use his mic and keyboard to add to them. You even asked for him to play you some of the old songs he published. It took a long time to convince him, but he embarrassingly complied. The two of you were having so much fun with music that you did not realize how late it was until you remembered to check the time. That seemed to be a recurring incident for you.
“It’s getting kinda late,” you said. “I should go, I have work tomorrow.”
Bang Chan agreed, “I’ll walk you out.”
And so, you gathered your bag and followed Bang Chan out of his little office to the elevators. The two of you rode the elevator in silence, but this time, it was a comfortable silence. You didn’t feel the need to make any small talk, nor fiddle your thumbs.
You continued your way out, finally exiting the front doors of the building. However, you came to instantly regret that as a gust of wind hit your bare skin, eliciting a shiver from you. Of course, you didn’t have your jacket. It was lost in the midst of your run-in with Manager Kim. You reminded yourself to look for it tomorrow.
It seemed that Bang Chan had noticed. “It gets cold fast here this time of year,” he shrugged off his hoodie. “Here, you can take this.”
“No, it’s fine, really.” You said. “I don’t live too far anyways.”
“You can’t catch a cold on your first week of work,” he said, “I would feel guilty.”
Bang Chan shoved his hoodie in your hands. It seemed like he wasn’t going to budge on his decision, so you shrugged it on. It fit very loosely — the hem of the hoodie reached your thigh and you had to roll the sleeves up quite a bit to expose your hands. It was warm though. And it smelled like him.
“Thanks,” you looked at your shoes, “for this and everything else.”
“Don’t thank me,” he flipped your hood around so it wasn’t inside-out. “Friends, right?”
“Right,” you nodded. “I’ll get going now.”
You waved to Bang Chan and started on your way home, feeling much better than what you had felt earlier this evening. The journey home didn’t feel as dangerous as before now that your mood was lifted. The looming worry of facing Manager Kim eventually was still in the back of your mind, but you pushed the thought away as best as you could.
The train ride was soon over, and your walk home was very quick as well. Everything seemed to go so smoothly when you were confronted with imminent danger. You quickly entered the passcode to your lock and safely got in your apartment. You put your bag down and looked over to your kitchen. I didn’t even eat dinner yet.
It was already so late, but all you had in your kitchen were eggs and ramen. It wasn’t healthy, but it was something. You reminded yourself for the second time since yesterday to go grocery shopping. Maybe on the weekend.
You were busy cooking your ramen when you received a text on your phone. Looking over the counter, you read the text.
Bang Chan: Did you get home safe?
You typed a reply.
Y/n: Yup ^^ making ramen right now
Bang Chan: Ramen? I’m jealous TT
Bang Chan: I’m on a diet but when I’m off I’ll eat 5 packs of ramen everyday
You giggled at the text and typed a reply. Then he replied. Then you did, then he did again. Your back and forth went on for the rest of the night, even as you ate your ramen and brushed your teeth, only ending as you fell into a deep slumber.
The next day was an important one for you. Amongst all the other tasks you had given to you, you were to hand in the notes that you’ve been taking from others. This was especially nerve wracking, however, as you were to also pitch Bang Chan’s idea to Manager Chen.
Before you left, you remembered to bring Bang Chan’s hoodie. You quickly folded and stuffed it in a random bag. On your way to the office, you couldn’t help but feel it in the pit of your stomach. The anticipation of officially pitching ideas to your boss. Also, not to mention the possibility of running into Manager Kim again. You weren’t excited at the premise of that.
You decided to finish all your tasks before pitching all the ideas to Manager Chen. Plus, you wanted time to double check that you had all your notes together too. You straightened yourself at your desk, and with that, you started working.
It was tiring, but honest work. You worked hard today, only making time to take a lunch break. You found yourself smiling at your phone while eating your sandwich when you saw a picture of Bang Chan’s ‘diet lunch’ he sent to you. You took big bites of your food, happy that you didn’t need to diet.
Finally, after a long day of work, the time came to report to Manager Kim. You grabbed your notebook with both hands and slowly shuffled towards her office. Stopping in front of her door, you took a deep breath before knocking.
“Come in,” she said.
You opened the door, walked inside, and placed your notes on her desk. “Hello Manager Chen. I know this is too early to be giving you my notes, but somebody submitted a really promising idea.”
Manager Chen took your notebook to read through it, her hand on her chin. You listened to the ambient silence of the room. She was focused on your notes, nodding a few times as she flipped the pages. She cleared her throat, and you stared at her with wide eyes, giving her all your attention.
“You’re right. This content does look promising. It would be a bit rushed, but if we quickly start on it, we could produce it in time.” She gave you a look whilst handing your notebook back. “Type this up and make photocopies of it. This will be one of the main points of our Friday meeting tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Manager Chen.” You tried to keep a straight face when taking leave.
Hands clenched on your notebook, you briskly walked past all the cubicles over to the washroom. You tried to keep a straight face in front of your coworkers, but as soon as you entered the washroom, you couldn’t fight the smile on your face.
“Yes!” You whisper-yelled.
Your fingers immediately went to your phone to text Bang Chan, but you decided to hold onto that idea. It’ll be a surprise tomorrow, you thought. Instead, you chose to send a text to let him know that you had his hoodie.
Y/n: Are you in the building? I have your hoodie.
The reply was almost immediate.
Bang Chan: I stayed at the dorm today, you keep it for now haha
You assumed he was simply tired from all the work he had. There were probably multiple schedules and projects he had that were completely separate from the one you were working on. That is also probably why he works so late everyday. Not to mention being an idol was an all-day-everyday sort of career.
It didn’t take a long time to type up and print your notes. You finished your task by delivering the photocopies to Manager Chen’s mailbox, and since there was nothing else on your plate, you decided to head home.
On your way home, you reluctantly stopped by the parking lot building to look for your jacket. You asked the lot attendant and scoured through every corner of the lot. You had even tried to retrace your steps from yesterday, trying to block the memories of Manager Kim out on your search for your jacket. The search was thorough, but nothing came from it. That was a really cute jacket too, you sulked. Also, your lanyard was in the pocket of your jacket. You really did not want to apply for a replacement so early on in your time here.
You left the lot and left for the subway station, a little disappointed that a perfectly good jacket went missing. Although you knew it wasn’t your fault — and you certainly did not regret shrugging your jacket off to escape — it was still a shame that you lost it, now you had another thing to worry about.
At home, you had another ramen dinner along with some tea. Strangely, this was the only mundane night you’ve had since you started your job. You recounted your memories of the days prior. You cringed at your drunken activities from your first day and swore that you would never get drunk with strangers again. Tuesday wasn’t bad comparatively — it was the day you had coffee with Na-eun and Yoojin. And Bang Chan, of course. Yesterday was not a day you wanted to remember, although you did appreciate Bang Chan calming you down afterwards. He was a good friend.
Your night was slow. The majority of your time was spent mindlessly scrolling through social media, silently checking up on your friends back home. You also spent time texting Bang Chan. Somehow your conversations strayed from work-related over to movies, music, and everything in between. It was amazing how, despite being so busy, he still managed to stay positive. You admired that about him.
You started to get ready for bed. Before you went to sleep, you played scenarios of tomorrow’s meeting in your head, preparing yourself for what to say if anybody made you talk.
The next morning, you woke up bright and ready to go. It was the day of the long awaited meeting. That, plus it was Friday. You were nervous, but excited for today as this was the meeting where Bang Chan’s content idea could either be sent for production or tossed in the trash. All these thoughts were running loose around your head as you got ready to go to work. You dressed in your most expensive blouse and skirt whilst trying extra hard on your makeup.
You made sure to arrive at the conference room early so you had the option of choosing your seat this time. You weren’t about to take your chances like last time.
There were only a couple more people in the conference room who came early like you. You greeted them as you walked in, choosing to take a spot further away from them to avoid awkward interactions.
More people started to flow in as the meeting was getting closer to starting. You fiddled around with your pen, clicking it open and closed, when you noticed your friend come in. Bang Chan was again dressed in all black. He wore a beanie and a black hoodie that was almost identical to the one he gave you. He gave you a smile and a nod of the head before heading over to sit in the chair beside you.
“I had such a long morning,” he whispered as he placed a bottle of mango juice in front of you, “I love those kids, but sometimes…”
You mumbled a ‘thank you’ under your breath. “What happened?”
“One of them left a mess in the kitchen last night and didn’t bother to clean it,” Bang Chan rolled his eyes, “so I had to do it for them before leaving.”
“What are you, their father?” You giggled.
“More like their maid.” Bang Chan smirked.
The two of you kept up your small talk until you saw Manager Chen enter the conference room. A number of the employees, including you, greeted her. She returned your greetings and began the meeting. It seemed like Manager Kim wouldn’t be coming.
“Although this was meant to be a preliminary check up meeting, I want to bring up an idea that was submitted by one of our team members.” She started passing out the photocopies you made. “The idea was to film promotional content for our China project. Since the Mid-Autumn Festival is at the end of the month, if the majority of us agree to push forward with this, we should be able to plan, film, and produce this content in time.”
“Won’t we be short on time?” Somebody asked.
“I am confident that, if we rush the planning, we will have enough time for filming and production.” Manager Chen replied. “Now, what are some ideas that we have for this content?”
“We could turn making mooncakes into a competition,” you offered your idea. “They could spin it into something funny, plus, this competition could take up a lot of air time.”
Manager Chen nodded in response.
“We could go somewhere in the mountains to get a better shot of the moon,” somebody in production added. “We can also set up a lantern-making episode.”
The rest of the meeting consisted of even more brainstorming. Many ideas for the content were thrown out and you carefully listened to each one before making up your own opinion silently in your head.
Finally, it seemed like everyone’s brains were wrung dry as there were no more ideas being thrown out there.
“Now we can vote to either go ahead with this idea or scrap it. A show of hands for those who are in favour of this idea.” Manager Chen announced.
Hands went up. It was almost unanimous. You looked over at Bang Chan, eyebrows raised in surprise. He returned a similar look.
“Since the votes were overwhelmingly in favour of putting this idea into action, we will go ahead with the Mid-Autumn content.” Manager Chen looked over at the production members. “Our production crew will start planning right away, and hopefully, we can finish this project before the day of the festival.”
You were overjoyed. This is the first time you had say in a project like this. It was a nice feeling to be in a team and have your opinion valued.
Manager Chen ended the meeting soon after, and you said goodbye to Bang Chan, assuming he was busy for the rest of the day. You were also busy. You left the conference room and diligently started your tasks for the day.
At the end of the day, you were exhausted. The fact that it was a Friday afternoon just made you want to leave work even faster. As soon as it was time to leave, you rushed out of the office, not wanting to catch the afternoon rush hour.
The packed train ride felt so long as you just wanted to get home and rest. You soon arrived at your stop and hopped off before starting your walk to the apartment complex. The thought of jumping in your bed and doing nothing for the evening lingered in your head, making you walk just a bit faster. You hiked up the stairs, over to your door.
There was something placed in front of it.
It was your jacket. And it was completely ruined.
You slowly bent down, picking it up. It looked like somebody put a lighter over it. There were many burnt holes and tears on the jacket. Your heart rate sped up as you knit your eyebrows in confusion.
Standing up, you heard something fall out from your jacket.
It was your lanyard.
Drawn over your picture, in black sharpie, was a hoodie.
It was weird, yes, but what really made you feel nauseous were the two X’s drawn right where your eyes were.

(Clone Wars) Obi-Wan Kenobi x Jedi!Reader: Here to Stay a Little Longer
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: In this fic, reader is a jedi who volunteers to care for an educate younglings in the order. Just wanted to say I know a few teachers and caretakers, and I just wanted to say the amount of respect I have for people who dedicate their time to little ones whether it be for a job or because their your own little ones!
    “Good work today.”
There was no stopping the affectionate smile that bloomed on your face as the youngling chirped in response to your affirmation.  You could sense his happiness at the lesson being over for the day.  He wanted to take a nap.
“Me too, Grogu,” you sighed.  “Me too.”  He waddled over to you, and you lifted him into your arms.  Another jedi would be coming to take him back to the nursery for rest.
   “___________?” a voice asked.
“Hm?” you turned to see an elderly female jedi at the doorway to the training room.  “Oh, jedi Lilanou.  You are here to take Grogu back to his quarters?”
“Yes, indeed,” she said with a smile, outstretching her hands.  They were weathered but ever so gentle as you transferred the tired baby to them.  He waved at you, and you laughed and waved back.  “Grogu will see you later this week for another training session.”
“I will be expecting him.”  You nodded.  Grogu wasn’t quite like the other younglings.  He was more developed mentally for one so small, and he was much older than the others.  This meant he started training, but only a little since he was still a baby.  As Lilanou carried him away, you felt sadness creep its way into your feelings.  No doubt your attachment to the young one went beyond what it should.  You felt that way about most of the younglings you volunteered to look after and train before they became padawans and were assigned to mentors.  It was hard to let go when that time came, but the need for jedi to step up and help the next generation of younglings drew you in again and again.
With the absence of Grogu, your afternoon was free.  The rumble in your stomach told you it was time for a meal.  You released a sigh and stepped out of the empty room into the vast halls.  Jedi walked to and fro, some in pairs while others had their noses in datapads.
The sound of children’s laughter weighed your steps until you stopped altogether.  It was a collective laugh as if it was one shared by an entire class.  You started back on your way again before it rang out once more.  It was indeed a class that occupied one of the nearest training rooms, and from where you stood outside the doorway, you could hear Yoda’s voice instructing.
“I’ll just stop in for a minute,” you said, grinning.  “Lunch can wait.”  As you approached, Yoda paused the lesson to meet your gaze.  As he greeted you, the younglings that were all seated in a semi-circle turned their heads to look in your direction.  Their faces lit up in recognition.
“Ah, _________, how nice it is to see you,” Yoda said.  “Younglings, say ‘hello.’”
   “Hello!” they chorused.
“Hello everyone!” you gave a nod of greeting before turning your gaze back to Yoda.  “I was just wondering if I could sit in on class today?  And maybe help if you need any assistance?”  It felt like a silly question to ask.  He was Yoda.  He’d been training many generations of younglings since long before you were born.  Nonetheless, his features softened as he motioned with his hand for you to enter.
“Needing a lesson to refresh your memory, are you?” he joked in a good-natured way.  You chuckled as you took a seat on the far right of the semi-circle.
   “Something like that.”
“Good, your timing is.”  He nodded.  “Discussing the process of constructing lightsabers, we are.  Perhaps, share with the class your experience, you could.”
“That’s right,” you mused.  “Many of you are nearing that time.  Oh, yes Ganodi?”
The Rodian girl lowered her hand, galaxy eyes averted shyly for a moment.  “Was it hard to build your lightsaber?”
“It was a challenge,” you admitted.  “But it wasn’t meant to be easy.”  When you noticed her nervous expression, you added, “I’m sure you will do well.”
“I’m excited to build mine!”  Petro exclaimed.  “I can’t wait!”
“All in good time,” Yoda told the enthusiastic youngling.  “Anyway, back to our lesson, we should get....”
- - - - - -
After the class had been dismissed by Yoda, some of the younglings stuck around to talk.  Yoda walked over to you.  “Thank you for your help today.  Warms my heart, it does, to see your compassion and willingness to nurture the next generation of jedi.”
You smiled.  “It warms my heart to see them so eager to learn.”
After he left, you found yourself in the middle of a game of tag with the younglings in the classroom.  Katooni was “it”, and the rest of the group scattered.  She was fast for a youngling!  You raced past Byph, and he got tagged instead.
   “Sorry, Byph!”
You were so captivated by the game that you hadn’t noticed a new presence.  “I thought I’d find you here.”  You skidded to a stop, looking over to see Obi-Wan Kenobi standing at the doorway.  Your heart did flips at the sight of that smirk of his while he stood there with his arms folded across his chest.  He had left on a campaign weeks before, and his return to Coruscant was a surprise to you.
You turned to the group, who didn’t seem to notice him.  “Give me one second, guys.”  They continued to run around, and you walked over to the jedi, out of breath.  “It’s good to see you.  How are things on the front?”
“Well, we were successful,” he replied.  That smooth voice was like music to your ears.  As you listened to him describe the gist of the mission, your mind wandered to silly little things like his velvety hair that shone in the light or his soft blue eyes or the way his lip quirked when he spoke.  It was just so nice to see him, to be able to take it in that he was there.
   “Sounds like an interesting time.”
“Oh, no.  Not interesting in the least,” he said sarcastically, the shine of amusement in his eyes.  “How have things been here?”
“Same as ever.”  You smiled and nodded in the direction of the younglings playing their game.  “These ones keep me occupied.  It’s not fighting Separatist battle droids, but…”
“It’s an important duty.  I can hardly think of a more noble endeavor,” he told you, eyes looking distant and warm as the younglings’ laughter carried.  “I myself hope to dedicate more time to the cause.  I haven’t been as involved as I’d like to be.”
“Well, we could always use the help.  Besides, you have become a sort of legend around here.”
Obi-Wan’s brow lifted curiously.  “Is that so?”
“It is, and you have Anakin to thank for that.  He stops by every now and then and shares a story or two about his and your adventures on the battlefield.”
“That sounds like Anakin,” he sighed.
“He’s an inspiration to the younglings, as are you,” you paused.  “To me as well.”
   “Obi-Wan!”
  “Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan!”
The group began to gather around the two of you, their eyes wide with admiration and curiosity.
“Well hello there,” he said.  “I was beginning to think I’d gone unnoticed.”
“Where’d you go? Did you fight Grievous?” Petro’s questions poured out quickly.
“Was Anakin there?” Zatt asked, tipping his head to one side.  “He said he was going on a mission too.”
“Alright, alright,” you laughed.  “Let’s not overwhelm him.”
“I’ll tell you all about the mission another time,” Obi-Wan assured them.  “For now, you might want to run.”
   “What?  Why?”
“Because it looks like Byph is still ‘it,’ and he’s sneaking up behind you.”
“Ahhh!”  They burst into laughter and screams as they scattered once more, leaving you and Obi-Wan chuckling.  One of the smaller younglings fell down in front of him.  He simply took her hand and gently pulled her to her feet.
“Careful, little one.”  His warning was tender, and you watched the scene with heart thumping.  Obi-Wan was always good with younglings.  His kindly nature and humility made him quite popular.
He’d make a good parent, you thought.  Realizing where your mind was taking you, you shook your head.  That was hardly appropriate for one to think about a fellow jedi.  Romantic feelings were normal, but these were driving you to imagine a life with him outside the order.  You imagined a loving man with whom you could have your own children with.  The way he was gazing at you made you feel embarrassed, as if he sensed your thoughts.
   “___________?”
   “Yeah?”
   “Are you hungry?”
You glanced down at your stomach as it gave another rumble.  Ah, right.  You skipped out on lunch to join the youngling class.  How embarrassing he heard that!  “Uh yeah, I missed lunch.”
“I’m rather hungry myself,” he said.  “Shall we go get something together?”
You nodded, smiling.  “We shall.”  You looked at the younglings.  “I’ll see you all soon.”
   “Okay, bye ___________!”
   “Bye Obi-Wan!”
They headed out the door, their chatter echoing down the hall.  You walked alongside Obi-Wan on your way to get something to eat.  He was always pleasant company.  He walked with his hands folded behind his back and his gaze occasionally resting on you.  You had longed to see him again, but when the moment was finally there, you weren’t quite sure what to say.  Finally, you thought of something.
“Did you need me for something?”
   “Pardon?”
“You said you might find me there with the younglings,” you said.  “Does that mean you were looking for me?”
He opened his mouth as if he had a clever response, but his voice came out in a subtle stutter before he found the words. “I thought I’d pay you a visit since I arrived back on Coruscant.  I merely...wanted to see you.”
   “Oh, I see.”
“Is that a problem?” The question wasn’t irritated.  His eyes searched you with genuine concern.  He had made it known that he sought you out for no reason in particular other than his enjoyment of your company, and he didn’t want this knowledge to make you uncomfortable.
“No, no, not at all.”  You shook your head.  “I’m glad you did.  I’m pleased to see you.  It was only a few weeks, but it felt like so long.”  You went silent after that statement, unsure if you crossed a line either.  You were supposed to be a jedi free from attachment, and the last thing you wanted was Obi-Wan Kenobi to think you were needy.
“I know exactly what you mean,” he muttered in agreement.  His eyes went to the floor in a way that suggested he had something on his mind.  The implication that he may have missed you too made you want to hide your face shyly, but you remained nonchalant.
“When do you leave Coruscant again?”
“Not for some time, I hope.  Like I said, I’d like to be more involved with training the next generation for a while.”  He glanced your way, eyes crinkling as he smiled.  “But my apologies, that means you’ll have to see more of me.  I know how much of a burden I am.”
“Indeed.”  You returned the smile.  “How terrible.”
The warmth between you two was unmistakable during the playful banter.  Part of you was thrilled that he would be around, that you wouldn’t have to say “goodbye” for a while.  The other part was worried what it might bring upon both of you.  If the two of you spent more time together with the younglings, it would do you no good as far as dismissing the attachment you had to him.  And what of the Council?  Would they take notice?
Obi-Wan sat across from you at one of the long dining tables, and those doubts one-by-one went out the viewport.  He spoke about his mission away and then listened as you told him about some of your adventures on Coruscant.  Some involved your travels outside the jedi walls while others were about your daily struggles and victories with the little ones.  You told him of a youngling still in the nursery that ran off without their robes that you had to chase down and dress.  Fortunately the nursing droids had proper security so the youngling didn’t leave the nursery.  Obi-Wan’ laughter rang out clear as a bell as he tipped his head back at the outrageous tale.  Something fluttered in your chest as he lost himself in the humor for a moment before taking a breath and sighing.
“Well it seems I have much to look forward to,” he chuckled.  “I recall once you said you wished you had some war stories to share, but it seems you do now.”
“Some days it is a battle,” you agreed.
“Believe me, I know.”  He gazed at you then, that glint in his eyes as he smiled tenderly.  You found yourself unable to look away.  It was like a magnet pulling you to him, and if there weren’t a table separating you, you might have even leaned in for a kiss.  It was like electricity crackling between you, and you had to force yourself to glance down at your now-empty tray.  The time working with Obi-Wan again would be interesting.  Even after only a few hours together, you felt that same pull that you fought for years.  You wondered how long you could go without giving in.  You wondered if he felt it as strongly as you did.  By the look flashing in his eyes as you leaned in ever so slightly to scoot out of your seat, you figured he might.
   An interesting time indeed.

Sirius
While James and I walk to potions, he continues to nag me about the upcoming dance. He acts as if I can’t ask a girl out. I have it all planned: don’t worry about it until the day before.
“You need a date,” James warns.
“Well that’s easy,” I dismiss
“That’s true, he could ask a Slytherin and even she would consider it,” Remus remarks, appearing on my other side.
“No, I already have someone in mind,” I correct with a smug expression.
“Who?” James presses.
Right on cue, my favorite girl appears down the hall with Evans. Merlin, she is utterly perfect. Her perfect hair, skin, walk, smile.
“Y/N! Morning,” I greet as the boys and I approach the duo.
“Good afternoon,” she smiles, already giving me her full attention.
“Ooh, makes sense,” James notes, finally piecing together who I plan on asking.
“Y/N/N, I have a proposition for you.” I place my palm to the small of her back to guide her away from the group.
“Oh no,” she expresses a tad worriedly.
“It’s nothing bad!” I defend with a chuckle, though her reaction is fair considering the amount of trouble I've gotten her into over the years.
“You said that last time and last time I got covered in poison ivy!" She reminds.
“The Spring Ball,” I state.
“Yes?” She inquires with a raised brow.
I can feel the eyes of James and my other friends from a few feet away. Their frequent murmuring is hard to ignore.
“Go with me,” I request to Y/N plainly.
“Mmm," she thinks it over a moment. "Nope."
Wait, what?
“And why not?” I frown.
“Because,” she shrugs and starts back toward our friends.
I grab her wrist, bringing her to a halt. “Is this because of the dragon joke? I told you I was kidding!”
“Nope,” she replies purposefully vague.
I release her wrist and she strolls back to our friends. I look to Evans for answers and she shrugs.
“I know nothing,” she tells me as Y/N locks arms with her before walking off.
I'm left surrounded by my fellow Marauders, watching in awe as my girl, my girl walks away from me.
"What the bloody hell just happened?" I ask to answer who can answer.
James places his arm over my shoulders. "Dunno mate, guess she's not so much "your's" as you thought," he laughs.
"Oh really, huh?" I playfully shove my best friend in the chest to get off of me. "Well I think otherwise! I'll prove it too. By this weekend, Y/N will say yes."

Y/N
For most of the afternoon, I hide away in the library to study for a potions exam. Lily is supposed to meet hereafter her class. If I didn't have Lily as my friend/free tutor, I don't know what I'd do.
"Hello, Love."
The sound of Sirius's voice interrupts my studying. Then, a pair of lips meet mine. The kiss feels almost taboo with its intensity in such a public setting. Nevertheless, I embrace the affection. Sirius is like a drug that I can't get enough of, that I can never satisfy.
He parts from me but lingers mere inches from my face.
"Hello to you too," I greet with a pleased grin.
"You look phenomenal," he compliments as he moves to sit beside me in Lily's seat.
"Sirius, that's-"
"Go with me!" He doesn't hesitate to ask me again.
"Nope," I answer, unfazed, as I return to my studies.
"Why not?!" Sirius whines, fussing like a young child.
"Because!" I laugh, isn't it obvious?
"Oh yes, that's a fair argument! Go on!" He mocks.
"This is an argument, I just don't feel like going!" I giggle, trying my best to focus on my school work.
When Sirius is around I never fail to get distracted.
"But everyone's going!" He drags out.
I close my book and face the jet black haired boy with similarly dark eyes. He's so pretty it's annoying.
"So if everyone jumped off a cliff you would too?" I raise a brow.
"If James did it, yeah," he shrugs nonchalantly.
"Oh, dear Merlin," I mutter under my breath as I face the table again.
Sirius shifts closer to me. I abruptly feel his warm hand glide up my thigh from the knee and I inhale sharply.
"So you'll shag me, but you won't go with me to a ball?" He purrs in my ear.
Sirius dangerously slips his fingers under the fabric of my skirt. I swallow hard, glancing over at Madame Pince as she sits behind her desk reading a book.
"You know, we're really breaking gender stereotypes right now," I laugh nervously as he continues his pursuit. "Usually, in a friends-with-benefits scenario, it's the girl who begs for more from the guy. Look at you being revolutionary!"
"Spring Ball, you and me, a bottle of firewhiskey, trip to the Astronomy Tower after," he smirks, rubbing his hand up and down my inner thigh.
"Sounds real romantic," I sass breathlessly, as I try to remain relaxed.
"Oh, you want romantic?" He raises a brow with a smirk. "I can make the Room of Requirement look real nice."
"Knowing the students of this school, I feel like you're not the only one with that idea," I insinuate jokingly.
He leans forward, planting a kiss on my cheek. "Y/N, sweet, kind, charming, beautiful...” He lowers his lips to my neck where he knows it'll make me squirm.
"Sirius," I mutter his name warningly as I keep a sharp eye on the librarian.
I bite down my lip and melt into the sensation of his soft lips on the base of my neck. He lifts his head to meet my gaze proudly.
"Y/N, will you please do me the honor of escorting you to the ball?" He grins.
"Ye-no," I nod slowly, pursing my lips.
"You're lucky you're so damn hot," he pecks my lips. "Otherwise I'd kill you."
"I'm so flattered," I tease the boy with a giggle.
"As you should be, Darling," he leans in again and kisses me. "I will convince you to go with me," he assures against my lips.
"Looking forward to it," I mumble.
"Okay, I have to go before I distract you further," he reluctantly pulls away. "I'll see you tonight!" He rises from his chair to head out.
"But I have-"
"Nope," he holds up his hands before I can decline. "You and me, us, Room of Requirement at seven sharp."
"Yeah, yeah, I know the drill," I wave my hand dismissively as I prepare to return to my studies.
"Oh yes you do," he purrs and leans down to peck my lips with a smirk. "Bye, bye, Baby."
"Later," I wave goodbye to my friend.
As the boy strolls out of the library, he salutes Madame Pince. "Madame, always a pleasure."
I snicker quietly to myself, and as though he could hear me, Sirius turns around and sends me a wink.
It's almost ironic that he's named after a star considering that's exactly what he is, he's a bright, unique, light. I look at him and music plays in my head. Is there something wrong with me? Sirius and I have been best friends since First Year. Five years later and we're a little more than friends, but not dating. It all started during our Fourth Year, Halloween night. We both got drunk at the Gryffindor party and well... one can guess. Ever since then, we've acted as though we're dating, but neither of us has said it out loud. Sirius and I have hooked up with random people since then to keep it casual as we agreed. Yet, in the last year, we've both stopped. Neither he nor I have mentioned that fact. I'm just assuming he has hooked up with other girls and hasn't told me or he has his eyes on someone but is waiting. I've tried to conjure up the emotion to show interest in another boy, but I haven't felt anything toward anyone except Sirius in the last two years. Drunken hookups have happened, but they don't mean anything. With Sirius, it's not supposed to mean anything either, yet it feels different. It feels right if that makes sense. It's comfortable yet never boring, nothing about us is boring. I'm not sure what I want or what to make of it. All I know is I'm more comfortable where I am than where I would be if this were to end. I rather be his 'something' than nothing.

Y/N found herself aimlessly driving around. No known destinations in mind; she just wanted to stay away from the house that once made her feel welcome but now she began to rethink about how it just gave her a false sense of home.
Spotting a bar she decided to grab a drink — a non-alcoholic one, she wasn’t going to risk an impaired driving ticket. Upon entering the facility, she spotted a co-worker of hers, Sheila, and waved at her. “Hey Y/N, come over here!”
She nodded and took the empty seat beside her, “You alone?” Sheila nodded as she gulped a bit of her drink. Ordering a drink, she turned to Sheila, “What brings you here?” Shrugging, the blonde answered, “I come here every Friday night, and before you ask it’s not to get lucky. But I just reward myself with a fancy drink after a week’s hard work.”
Thanking the waiter for the arrival of her drink, “Well good for you for having a reason to celebrate.” Picking up the sadness in her tone, the blonde asked, “What’s wrong with you? It’s unlikely of you to spend time out.”
Her mind immediately went to her earlier conversation with Andy’s former wife, but she didn’t know if it would be a good idea on her part to open up about it to someone. Sensing her uneasiness, Sheila reassured her, “Don’t worry I can keep an open mind and a sealed mouth.”
Nervously chuckling, Y/N then found herself unloading her baggage after sipping her drink, “It’s just, you know how I rent a room in Andy Barber’s house right?” Sheila nodded, prompting Y/N to continue her story, “Well over the past months that I’ve spent with him, we became close. Close enough that I thought that there was something special between the two of us.”
“Oh snap! There goes your first mistake; you two continued on without clarifying the label between the two of you,” Her comment had her taken aback and Sheila just sheepishly shrugged her shoulders, “Sorry, shouldn’t have commented. Keep going with your story.”
“And I don’t know? I’m overthinking now because Laurie asked about Andy and I, then she said that the only reason Andy acts the way he was around me is that I’m convenient for him. That no other woman would look at him and take interest in him, so really there was no other option for him but me.” Y/N didn’t notice how there were a few stray tears that littered her face and she was quick to wipe them away. Sheila then rubbed the forearm of the girl who sat beside her, “Have you talked to Andy about this?”
Shaking her head, she wiped the remainder of her tears with a tissue, “I didn’t. But what for? To confirm that I was indeed just convenient for him?” Just at the thought of it Y/N could feel her heart breaking. “Well I don’t know but I think you need closure.”
Y/N rolled her eyes at her opinion, “Closure? What the fuck for? We never clarified if we were in a relationship therefore we don’t need to end anything,” She scoffed. Sheila just gave her a pointed look, “But  you and I both know this will eat you up alive if you don’t get to set things straight with him.”
“You have a point,” Y/N conceded before continuing, “But should I talk to him, I’m gonna need a new place to live.” Sheila scoffed at her statement before taking a swig of her drink, “Lucky for you I have a spare bedroom; so you don’t need to worry about that.”
“How ‘bout I stay over on yours for the weekend? Just to see things out. Not really because I packed some things because I needed to get away,” She joked, which had Sheila laughing as well. “As long as you’re driving me home, we can have a sleepover.”
As they both got in the car and the only sounds came from the music playing on the stereo. “One thing though,” Sheila slurred out, “How come Laurie suddenly talked that way about you and Andy?” Not knowing the answer to it Y/N just shrugged, “Do you think that Laurie’s jealous of the two of you?”
Ceasing at a stop light, Y/N looked over to Sheila with a wrinkled expression, “What are you going on about?” Sheila explained as she gestured with her hands, “Think about it, she asked about the two of you, criticized whatever was going on between the two of you, and talked shit about you. Perhaps she’s threatened?”
Without moving her eyes away from the road she scoffed, “What if she’s right though? That I’m just there to warm up Andy’s side and make him feel not lonely.”  Slapping her thighs as the alcohol finally settled in her system Sheila guessed, “Doubt it. But really the only way to find out is by talking to him.”
“I’ll cross that bridge once I get there, but now I don’t even want to think about him right now.”
Tumblr media
The weekend went relatively well for Andy. He didn’t have to spend time alone with Laurie, since there was always something the three of them did together. For one it was a great opportunity to bond with Jacob and that he got to know his new life more.
As Andy was saying goodbye to his teenage son, the younger Barber joked, “So will you finally ask Y/N out?” The lawyer ruffled his son’s hair, “Maybe you should ask out the girl you had an eye on too, huh?” The two then joked around for a bit before Laurie told Jacob to get in the car already. Hugging one last time, Andy bade goodbye, “I’ll see you soon, okay, bud? Be good.” The teenage boy nodded against him, “It was good seeing you, dad. I’ll miss you.”
As he was watching his son head to the car, Andy felt Laurie’s presence behind him, “Whatever it is you said about me and Y/N was way out of line.” The woman could only scoff, “It’s true and you know it. The sooner you accept, the better.” Breathing heavily through his nose and crossed his arms, the lawyer willed himself to not lose composure and just said goodbye to her, “Bye Laurie, don’t expect that I’ll contact you.”
Laurie was about to say something more, but opted not to and instead just patted Andy’s back before strolling her way to the car. Waving adieu to his son, the smile that graced his bearded face dropped when they vanished his line of sight. Reaching for the phone in his pocket, his frown deepened when he noticed that there were no texts or calls from Y/N, despite the fact he was trying everything to reach out to her.
Hey Y/N, I haven’t heard from you since Friday. Please call or text me back. I’m really worried about you, honey.
As he sent the text, he lowered the phone on the dining table, staring at the phone as if he’d intimidate it well enough to earn back a reply from the girl he’s been missing. “Where are you, Y/N?”
The remainder of the Sunday afternoon Andy spent it waiting for Y/N in the living room. He even ordered her favorite takeout just in case she came back hungry. But as the stars littered the sky and darkness took the place of light, there was still no sign of Y/N.
Tumblr media
As quietly as possible, Y/N opened the front door and entered the house. She had three hours before needing to go to work and she dropped by in order to shower and change into her work clothes. Tiptoeing her way to her room, she froze upon seeing Andy’s hulking figure fit itself into the couch. She peeked a bit and was relieved to see that he was fast asleep; but was also curious as to why the lawyer spent the night here and not in his bedroom. When he moved to lay on his other side, Y/N held her breath and sprinted quietly to her room in order to do what she came here for.
Once she was showered and dressed for her day’s work, Y/N decided to prepare some of her bags already; some having been already filled halfway with her clothes and other belongings. Looking down on her phone she noticed that Andy would soon be waking up given the time. In her haste to exit the premise, she wasn’t able to fully shut her bedroom door as she quietly made her exit. But before doing so, she glanced at Andy’s sleeping figure with sadness and longing.
Andy’s body was scolding him for not sleeping on his bed and instead making camp on the couch; he then decided that missing a day of exercise wouldn’t be too bad. Rubbing the sleep of his eyes, he peeped at the window to see if the compact car of Y/N was parked outside. Sighing heavily upon noticing that he still had a bit of time to just lay in his bed before heading to work; he then decided to rest on his bed for a bit. On his way up, the bedroom door he rented being left half opened stood out to him. The few times he’s been in Y/N’s room was so that they could cuddle as they slept together, and those instances flooded his mind as he entered the room and glared at the bags that were laid out in the bed — some of them containing Y/N’s belongings.
“What the fuck?” He muttered to no one in particular, but a part of him was hoping the room would suddenly talk back and answer him about the questions he had racing through his head. Fumbling with his phone, he texted Y/N:
Where are you? Why are your bags packed?
Y/N had decided to grab some breakfast on her way to work, and as she was sipping on some hot chocolate, she saw how Andy texted her yet again. The man clearly did not grasp the concept that she wished not to speak with him. Yet she also felt guilty about how he bombarded her with texts and calls over the weekend and yet not one were opened or returned; so she decided to spare him with a simple reply:
I’m moving out.
And that didn’t sit well with the lawyer as his eyes bulged at the reply and immediately flooded her with texts, mixed with the occasional phone calls. The girl having had enough of it, turned off her phone before going on with her day at work.
The lawyer did go to work — however he wasn’t in his best state of mind that day. His thoughts preoccupied with questions about why Y/N was avoiding him and the reason behind her sudden desire to move out of the house. Knowing that she always got off from work earlier than him pushed Andy to leave work early. He fed his co-workers some bullshit about not feeling well because of something he ate over the weekend — well if he was being honest, it wasn’t really something he ate, but because of someone who made distasteful comments — and they believed him without a doubt after seeing how distant he was today at work.
On his way home, he again decided to drop by her favorite restaurant to grab some of her go-to orders. Arriving home, he prepared the dining table with the food he bought; they’ve only spent two days apart and Andy came to realize how much he’s missed Y/N considering how they’d spent so much time together. It was like she was engraved in his daily routine and with her absence, he felt lost.
Hearing a rattling of keys, the lawyer was hopeful that it was Y/N and that they could have the chance to talk. Seeing how she quietly walked around the room gave Andy the impression that she had been purposefully avoiding him. “Shit!” She slightly jumped when she peeked on the dining area and spotted the familiar blue eyes she’d grown to adore.
“Why are you so surprised?” Andy implored as he crossed his arms. Recovering from her initial shock she managed to offer him a valid response, “Well I always come home before you. And you were looking right at me as I entered.”
The lawyer had to give it to her, it was a plausible excuse; but her surprise wasn’t his main concern right now. Standing up from where he was seated he walked towards her, planting a hand on his hip, “Why haven’t you been answering my calls and texts? And why are you moving out?”
Shifting the weight between her feet, Y/N refused to look up at him, “There’s no signed lease, I’m not infringing anything.” Displeased with her answer, Andy angrily exhaled, “No, but I’m owed an explanation.”
Chuckling at him, “An explanation? I don’t want to live here anymore; not when I’m only here to rid you of your loneliness,” Without realizing it, tears were starting to flow out of her eyes. Shocked with what she said, Andy placed both his hands on her shoulders to get her to look at him, “Rid me of my loneliness? What are you talking about?”
Pushing his hands off of her, she wiped her tears away then bitterly recalled, “Laurie talked told me; The only reason we have, whatever it is we have between us,” She pointed to the space she created between them, “Is because you know no woman would want you hence why you settled for me.” It was ridiculous how she was crying in front of him, but she just felt emotionally exhausted with the whole ordeal that she didn’t have the enough energy to fight back the feeling to cry.
Whereas Andy’s heart broke at the sight of Y/N breaking down; despite her frail attempts to push him away, he fought her against it and engulfed her in a tight hug. “What Laurie said isn’t true,” He tried to comfort her as she rubbed her back, “I’m not with you because I have no other option.”
“You call me honey; and apparently that’s what you called her,” She scoffed, “Besides, we didn’t put on a label on what we had going on.” The lawyer’s heart shrunk in sadness at what she just said, he also realized how awful he was treating her and how badly she was feeling about the whole ordeal.
“I’m so sorry about the whole nickname thing, sweetheart,” He said as he pressed a kiss on the top of her head, “It was the nickname on the top of my head and I should have known better not to grace you with that one as well.” He pushed her away from him slightly so he could see her face clearly, wiping the tears that tarnished her beautiful face, “And I regret not initiating for us to have a label.”
Y/N could only focus on the negatives and turned away from Andy, “You have nothing to apologize for.” She went for the fridge to grab some water, suddenly feeling thirsty after letting out a few tears. Andy looked at her and was patiently waiting should she have something more to say; which she did after sipping the water, “I’m the only one to blame for falling for you.”
Had he not been paying close attention to her, he would have missed what she just said. But his orbs widened, hopeful that she meant what she had just said and hopefully didn’t regret so. “You fell for me?” His question had Y/N suddenly realizing that what she had mumble didn’t slip past Andy; looking at the bearded man in front of her — who’s face glimmered with optimism — and she couldn’t bring herself to cover up what she mindlessly confessed, not when it looked like gave life to the man in front of her.
“Yeah, I did,” She admitted silently as her fingers circled around the rim of the glass, “But it’s fine if you don’t feel the same. If it was just a fling for you or whatever, it’s fine.” She sounded dejected that Andy swore to himself he’d do everything in his power to make her feel the opposite. Closing the distance between them, Andy wrapped one of his hands around her waist, pushing his front flush against hers. While his other hand grasped hers and held it against his chest, “Whatever bullshit Laurie fed you isn’t true. It was a mistake to call you honey and I swear you’ll never hear me say that to you or to anyone ever again.”
Y/N’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion for she didn’t know where Andy was going with this; but she didn’t speak up as she felt that he had more things to say. “You’re not someone I’m settling for — whatever the fuck that means — but you’re someone I actually want to be with. Ever since you came to live with me you’ve made me feel happy, loved, and cared for. I never thought someone would be able to make me smile again, but you did. You breathed life into me just when I was on the verge of giving up.”
Kissing her hand that he held, he spoke with the utmost sincerity on his voice, “I’ve fallen for you too and even though it’s terrifying to open up to someone, I don’t regret doing so,” He took a deep breath before revealing, “I love you, Y/N.”
Letting out an audible gasp, “You what?” Andy smiled softly before kissing the space between her eyebrows, hoping to rid her of the wrinkle she formed, “You heard me, I love you. I may have not said or shown it much to you, but I do.”
Her eyes were glossy with tears again, but not because of the earlier reasons. She felt her heart beat fast as it swelled with love and appreciation, “Andy, please don’t fuck with me right now.” The older man’s body vibrated with loving chuckles, “I’m not, sweetheart,” He kissed her lips briefly, they both could feel their bodies significantly relax, “I love you, and I understand if you don’t feel the same,” He added with his lips still touching hers.
Andy was nervous when Y/N untangled her hand from his and was preparing for the worst — that she didn’t feel the same or that she was still adamant about moving out from his house. But was genuinely surprised when her arms wrapped themselves around his neck, standing on her tiptoes so her forehead rested against his, “I love you too, Andy.”
Sealing his lips against hers was the only reply he could offer; his hands sliding from her back down to her thighs. Tapping on the back of her thighs he briefly broke their kiss, “Jump, sweetie.” And he caught her with ease as she did so. Her hands clawed at his long sleeves, unbuttoning it as Andy carried the two of them up to his bedroom. Once she got rid of his shirt, she planted kisses along his neck, “I love you, Andy. I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you about it first.”
They were halfway through the journey to his room but the lawyer pressed Y/N against the wall as he stopped undoing her shirt, “I love you too; and I understand why you didn’t,” He sucked a hickey into her neck before saying, “I need you bad right now, sweetheart.”
When her back hit the soft mattress, Y/N removed her work pants along with her panties. Andy looked down on her hungrily as he took off his pants and boxers. Lunging towards her, he kissed her deeply, tongue wrestling against each other, his hands gently massaged her breasts. “God I missed your touch,” She moaned as the lawyer fiddled with her nipples, tweaking and pulling on them.
“It will teach you not to run off,” Andy smirked as he enveloped a breast in his mouth. Moaning out loud about how good it feels, one of her hands pulled on his hair and directed him to focus his attention to her other breast. He complied with a smirk, “You’re such a needy little thing, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I’m sorry for running off. I love you so much and I just need you,” She mewled out, chest heaving up and down. Declaring her love for him felt so natural and good that she couldn’t stop professing it. The same could be said for Andy; as his kisses trailed down from her chest to her pussy he kept on muttering with every kiss, “I love you. I love you, baby.”
Feeling his tongue lick and massage her hard nub, Y/N squirmed, “I need you inside me, Andy, please. I just need you inside me.” Stopping his assault, Andy made his way up to face her and kissed her lips before asking, “What are the magic words, sweetheart?”
“I love you, Andy. Please I need you inside me,” And the man was pleased with her answer as grabbed his cock and didn’t tease the both of them any further and slid in. “Fuck, I love you too,” He groaned as he could feel her walls clinging into his cock tightly. The juices she was producing gave him the lubrication to slide in and out of her without hurting her.
Andy made her wrap her legs around his torso, allowing him to rut into her deeper and harder — but still doing so with passion. He laced both his hands with hers and held onto them tightly, “There’s only you, sweetheart,” He placed short and sweet kisses on her lips before reaffirming, “You’re the only one I love.”
The tip of his cock hit her sweet spot and she let out a loud moan into Andy’s mouth as they both were passionately kissing — which resulted in the lawyer groaning and slamming into her faster this time. “I’m so close, Andy. You make me feel so good.” Fueling his ego, Andy let go of one of her hands to rub in her swollen clit. Her wails getting louder, “Only I can make you feel this way. You know why that is?”
Too blissed out with the simulations she was receiving, all Y/N could do was shake her head. And that was a good enough answer for Andy as he grunted out, “Because I love you; I’m gonna make you feel all my love.” His thrust then became rapid, harsh, and desperate; as if trying to convey what he felt for her.
“I love you too,” She moaned out before kissing him and Andy was more than willing to reciprocate the kiss. And as they both were making out Y/N whined out, “I’m cumming, I’m gonna cum hard.” Andy told her he was close too and focused on slamming into her hard and it did the trick since she climaxed and came so hard her walls gripped onto the lawyer’s cock so hard he had no choice but halt his movements because she was too tight. The way her walls massaged his cock had him spilling his load as well.
They both caught their breaths with their foreheads pressed against each other’s, staring deeply into each other’s eyes. Andy snapped out of their post-orgasm haze and laid down beside Y/N without removing his cock from inside her. Wrapping both his arms around her frame, he pulled her head against his chest, “That isn’t just a fling for me, okay?” She looked into his face and could see how serious he was.
“I wanna be with you; take you on dates, go for vacation, have lazy days, bribe you to go to work late because I wanna have sex,” Y/N slapped his chest at his last remark and could not help but do the same, “So really what I’m trying to say is — will you be my girlfriend?”
Smiling so wide her jaw ached she nodded as she leapt so her face was right in front of his, “Yes, yes, I wanna be yours, Andy. I love you so much,” And she littered his whole face with kisses, each kiss coupled with a declaration of her love.
“I love you too, baby,” He mumbled in content and her head laid again on his chest; stroking her hair as a comfortable silence enveloped them. Andy was just more than grateful that he let her in his house, and she turned it around making it feel like home. A home that’s now filled with love and happiness.

Truth Is (Chapter 4)
Chapter 4: Dangerously Dangling
Tumblr media
Frankie "Catfish" Morales x F!reader
Summary: When Fish and 'Chip' find the money, the gang erupts with glee. But little did the team know, someone had a few tricks up their sleeve, leading to disaster.
Word Count: 1.3K
Warnings: explicit language, blood, violence, guns/weapons, lots of angst and emotions, infidelity?, smut, sexual themes/innuendos, drinking, mentions of drugs, talk of death/death itself, and talk of mental health (PTSD and depression.
A/N: A short chapter...Don't hate me, it's all part of a plan, I promise <3
We both held our breaths, each holding a baggy of neatly stacked money. Our eyes remained locked, the gears in our brains turning simultaneously.
"Damn it!" Pope's voice broke the silence down the hall.
Frankie peeled his gaze from mine as he lightly tossed the money up and down in his hand. "Pope." He spoke, trying to alert our friend. He moved his lips again to speak, but he fell silent in shock.
"Pope. Pope! Pope?!" I screamed, growing loud with each pass of his nickname. The sound of boots and heavy footsteps grew louder, until they reached us.
Benny and Santi burst into the room. "What-" His sentence cut short at the sight before them. Both their eyes flickered from between the cash in my hand, Frankie's and I's faces, and the gaping hole full of money in the wall. "You're joking."
I shook my head as I threw the bag towards him and spun to face the hole once again. Frantically I began to rip the sheetrock off the wall, hearing it crack and crumble below me as it fell to the floor.
My wrath against the wall had revealed the contents full of stacks of green. "Someone help me! Now!" I squeaked, kicking holes in the structure and tearing pieces of the room apart. Hearing Tom and Will finally join us, I began to laugh in relief.
We actually found the money, it was all here, But not for much longer, suck it Lorea.
"Holy fuck! There has to be well over 5 million in this one room!" Benny boomed, pulling large amounts of money out and shoving it into our cargo bags.
"Then that means-" I trailed off, turning and darting to the next room. Running into the adjoining room, I grabbed a heavy lamp from an end table and broke the shade off. With a loud grunt I swung the lamp into the wall, watching the weight crash through the thin surface. "Arrg." I expressed, tugging at the makeshift tool, unsticking it and giving it another go. Once satisfied, I chunked the furniture aside and began yanking pieces off again, revealing more money.
"We're gonna need more bags boys!" I cheered, toppling the stacks from the hiding space and out onto the floor. "How much money did she say there was?!" I questioned, shoveling the money into my own bag.
"She said anywhere from 10 to 90 millions!" Pope exclaimed, charging into the room with extra carrier bags. "Jesus fuck." He said, in disbelief. "I didn't think she was serious."
I huffed with excitement, "If you don't fuck her as a thank you, I will." I joked, hurriedly filling up as much as I could.
"Remind me to do that, we need to hurry! Our time window is closing, then we gotta burn it all." Pope laughed in a worried manner. I tugged the straps of several bags and hauled them over my shoulder, moving as fast as I could. I ran out the room and down the stairs, making sure not to fall. I made it to the loading area, where Will stood in the back of a cargo van, pulling in bags that the boys previously left to go back and grab more.
"Here." I told Will, throwing the bags into the pile and making my way as fast as I could back to the rooms. The mansion rang with howling and whooping from the rest of the gang. "This is a fucking dream!" I yelled when I bounded into the second room, grabbing another empty bag and stuffing it full.
"Let's go! Time's up!" Frankie yelled from the other side of the wall.
"I'm just getting this one! I'll be right behind you! Just go!" I responded, trying to scavenge the rest of the stacks into the last bag.
"You better be!" He yelled, heading down to the vans, with Benny right behind him.
I giggled to myself, this couldn't be real, how easily we got in, and now how easily we're getting out. We have more than 50 million dollars loaded.
My thoughts are interrupted by a voice, "Let's go Chip." Tom spoke, wrapping a hand around my arm and standing me up.
"Hold on Tom, we can fill this last one." I frantically pulled away, reaching for the bag.
"I don't care about that right now." His voice deepened menacingly.
"But-" I spoke, but was cut off when he yanked me to him, while he walked quickly out the room and over to the banisters that ran above the foyer. I attempted to free myself but his grip tightened and he placed one of his hands over my throat. "Tom what the fuck." I struggled.
"You cost me so much, and you got to get a taste of the money, too bad you won't get to experience it." He spat in my face, beginning to choke me. "You took away my friends, the only family I had left. And yet you still get to get rich and live lavishly after this. Not anymore you whore. I'm gonna fake your death, right here right now." A wicked grin grew on his rugged face.
"No!" I choked out, gasping for air and trying to loosen his hand on my neck. "Ahhh!" I screamed, fighting harder against him.
"They can't hear you." He laughed, forcing me closer to the edge, bending my back over the railings. "Maybe you can beg for your life. Go on, beg." He continued.
I gathered a much breath as I could, "Fuck. You." I spit harshly onto his face, causing him to flinch and his face to contort with disgust.
"Bye bye bitch." Tom whispered, trying to flip me over the edge. I screamed as loud as I could, using all the force I could to get him off of me. His hand squeezed impossibly tighter around me, leading to stars filling my vision, my head becoming fuzzy and light.
My limbs grew heavier with each passing second, fighting became harder. I could feel Tom lifting my body on the banister, ready to shove me over when a shot rang out.
My vision turned black. "Let go of her!" What seemed like Frankie's voice yelled. Followed by Will and Santi yelling.
In seconds, Tom's vice grip on my neck loosened, shooting me back into reality, toppling me over the rail. I screamed, grabbing at the wood, attempting to catch it before I fell 20 feet. My arms jolted to a stop, pain searing my shoulders from bearing the weight of my body as I dangled.
"Fuck!" I yelled, feeling Will and Benny right below me, grabbing my legs and telling me it was okay to let go. I landed in their arms, blood rushing to my arms, causing me to grunt out in pain.
"What is wrong with you?" Frankie screamed at Tom as he made his way to him and forced him to his stomach and on the ground. Will and Benny carried me out to the vans as Frankie pulled out zip ties and tied Tom's hands behind his back.
"Are you okay Chip?" Benny asked me, concerned.
As he and Will put me into the passenger side of one of the vans, I answered. "No-fuck- my arms felt like they were going to rip off." I groaned, pulling my arms up into my chest and throwing my head back into the headrest.
"Why the fuck would he- how dare he." Will spoke, trying to understand what just happened.
Neither of us said anything as I sat there, trying not to cry from pain. They both looked at me with concerned eyes.
"Get in! We need to go!" Santi ran out to us, hopping in the second van, Will And Benny following shortly behind.
As I gathered my thoughts and slowed my breathing, two loud bangs sounded from the manor, causing the three men to whip around and jump out of the van in fear.
It felt like my heart stopped, worry pounded in my head as I shifted in the seat to view the doors to the foyer, only to see flames erupt inside.
I gasped in fear, seeing a figure come out, dragging what seemed to be, another person.

Part 1 of my HDL birthday fic. The other part will be out in the next few days
Birthday Plans
D: Any fun plans for today?
It was seven in the morning and Dewey was sitting in the cockpit of the Sunchaser on his birthday. Della was bringing coffee but Dewey was still a little tired. There was a different kind of tiredness that had settled in his bones as he thought about spending his birthday away from his brothers. He didn’t expect either of them to be awake but he thought he would shoot them a text before he started flying.
H: I wish. I have a bunch of tests tomorrow so I have to study all day today. But tomorrow after my tests, my friends and I are going out for belated birthday drinks.
D: Tell the bartender it’s your birthday and get free belated birthday drinks
H: I’m not going to lie, it’s against the JWG
D: You’re 24. You’re not a Junior Woodchuck anymore.
H: You’re right.
H: I’m a Senior Woodchuck.
L: Do you guys ever sleep???
D: It’s 7 AM
L: Yeah, it’s 7 AM, you should be asleep
D: What are your plans today, Lou?
L: Boyd is visiting after I get off work and we’re going to spend the rest of the day together
H: Aww, adorable.
D: Sappy
L: Anyway, what are you doing today, Dewdrop?
D: Doing a flight with mom and then cake with some of the fam later
H: Have fun, eat a slice of cake for me.
D: Will do
L: Your present should be in the mail. Yours too, Hue.
D: You didn’t have to get me anything
L: Yeah, but I feel bad that we can’t be together today. It feels weird.
D: It does feel weird
H: I miss you guys
Dewey set down his phone, blinking back tears. He hadn’t wanted to get emotional this morning but he was having a hard time holding it together if Huey was throwing around, “I miss you,” and Louie was commenting on how weird things were.
To avoid addressing his emotions Dewey found a gif of a dancing baby that said happy birthday. That was enough to start a gif chain that moved them away from heavy emotions.
“You okay, sweetheart?” Della asked, offering her son a cup of coffee, and taking in his bummed-out expression.
“Yeah, just texting Huey and Louie.”
Della nodded somberly, “It’s hard being apart from them, isn’t it?”
Dewey was trying his hardest not to get choked up.
“I shouldn’t be so dramatic. They’re just a few hours away, and we’re meeting up in a couple of weeks after Huey’s done with finals.”
“But today’s your birthday. It’s okay if you miss them extra hard today. Your feelings are valid.”
“It’s our first birthday apart,” Dewey whispered.
“I know how hard that can be,” Dell said, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
“Mom? Does it get easier?”
“A little. But the time apart makes the time together so much better. And you get to do one barrel roll in the Sunchaser on your birthday.”
“I should get to do 24 barrel rolls because it’s my 24th birthday.”
“Don’t push it, buddy.”
Huey had a coffee and an English muffin (toasted, lightly buttered) and was one flashcard away from a breakdown. He was exhausted, which was not the way you wanted to spend your 24th Birthday.
Everything was always happening all at once. Huey probably wouldn’t have remembered it was his birthday until Dewey had texted him earlier. He’d fussed about lying to an imaginary bartender but had had no qualms lying to his brothers. There were no friends taking him out for belated birthday drinks. No one here knew him intimately enough to know his birthday.
Texts would roll in all day from the family and friends who he desperately missed, wishing him a pleasant day and asking him about his fabricated plans. He was almost in tears every time he furthered this delusion that he had people here, that he was not just a loser alone on his birthday. How pathetic would that be? When Dewey was with their family and Louie was with his boyfriend. Huey’s chest ached about the fact he was the only one alone.
Fenton was the only one who called him out on his lie.
F: What’re you doing for your birthday, Huey?
H: I have to study today but I’m getting drinks with some friends tomorrow.
F: Oh, nice.
F: So you finally made some friends over there?
Huey wished that he hadn’t ranted to his mentor about how incredibly difficult it was to find time to make friends.
H: ...No
F: So who are you drinking with?
H: Nobody
F: Drinking alone, then? Maybe call a car to get home.
H: I’m not drinking alone
F: So you just lied to me?
H: Not just you?
Fenton stopped responding for a few minutes and Huey felt devastated. He hadn’t wanted to lie to his loved ones but he hadn’t wanted them to pity him either. And now he had to deal with guilt on top of all the exhaustion.
F: So you’re all alone on your birthday?
H: I guess I am
F: I see why you wouldn’t want to talk about that
F: But you didn’t need to lie
H: It’s too late now, I already told everyone that I’d be drinking with friends tomorrow.
F: Well, I don’t have any plans tomorrow. Team Science reunion?
H: Team Science reunion
Huey felt a bit better about his birthday, grateful that Fenton had reached out. He still missed his brothers though. He decided to text them both one more time today before he went back to studying, though he decided to text them separately this time.
H: Have a safe flight, Dewey.
D: Thanks, bro. Good luck studying
H: Thanks
He decided to text Louie later since he’d been tired and he wasn’t fun to talk to when he was tired. And then, swamped with studying, he promptly forgot until dinner.
H: Hey! I hope you had a good day at work and that you and Boyd have fun today. A responsible amount of fun.
L: Lol I’ll tell Boyd that the arson is canceled
H: No arson, but you could still probably make S’mores. Boyd’s really good at that.
L: I get it, you’re both Senior Woodchucks. Hey, do something nice for yourself today, okay? Don’t just study yourself to death.
H: ...Okay. Thanks, Lou
“Who’re you texting?” Boyd asked, already making himself comfortable on Louie’s couch.
“Huey. He told us to have fun. And to not commit arson.”
“I wasn’t gonna commit arson on purpose, were you going to commit arson?”
“Well, it’s my birthday, and you did bring cupcakes and candles.”
“Mm, those are more fun if you blow them out instead of letting them burn. How’s Huey doing anyway? Fenton just texted me about him.”
“I’m afraid he’s overworking himself,” Louie admitted, “But that’s just Huey’s nature. I'm not especially surprised.”
"That's the vibe I got too. Fenton asked me if I wanted to go get drinks with him and Huey tomorrow so that he doesn't have to be alone."
“Whoa,” Louie said, eyes widening.
“What?”
“Huey must’ve lied about having plans with his school friends tomorrow.”
“Aw. Well, you would’ve done the same thing. Huey probably just didn’t want you guys to worry. A classic Louie move.”
Louie frowned deeply.
"Hey, babe, do you ever get the sense you're doing the wrong thing?"
"Elaborate?"
"Well, I took this internship, to you know, pull myself up by my bootstraps. Be my own person."
"I'm really proud of you for that."
"Yeah, well… Being my own person sucks. I've always been one in a set of three. And it feels like recently someone ripped the "Do not separate" sticker off and I hate it."
"Hm… Do you want to come and get drinks with me tomorrow?"
"Getting wasted won't help. I've tried and alcohol doesn't fill that hole."
"I know, I've carried you home before. But I mean do you want to go get drinks with me and your brother? We could surprise Huey."
"Hey… That's not such a bad idea. I need to make a call."
“I’ll light your cupcakes on fire,” Boyd said cheerfully.
“No fair, starting the arson without me,” Louie laughed, as he pulled up the texts from the morning and tapping on Dewey’s number.
“Oh, hey! Hey, Louie, hold on, guys Louie’s on the phone, we gotta sing again!”
Louie laughed, cringing a little in anticipation of the awkwardness as his family began a staticky and muffled rendition of Happy Birthday.
“Thanks, guys, means a lot to me. Dewey, can I talk to you for a moment?”
“Sure, sure, let me just step outside,” A moment later Dewey’s voice came back, “What’s up?”
“Are you busy tomorrow?”
“Uh, not sure, why?”
“Well, it seems like Hubert lied about his birthday plans. Apparently, there were never any friends he was gonna go drinking with, so Fenton decided to drop by and he wanted to bring Boyd and Boyd thought it was a good idea if I tagged along. So what if we surprise Huey? He’s been working really hard at med school- hell, we’ve all been working really hard. What do you say?”
Dewey was silent for a minute and then Louie heard a laugh (Or was it a sob?) on the other end.
“Man, I’ve missed you guys so much. I’d love to do that. Let’s set something up, mm-kay?”
“Yeah. Boyd! Text Fenton and tell him that me and Dewey are gonna come surprise Huey, we’ll figure it out from there.”
“Okee dokee,” Boyd said cheerfully, putting an alarming amount of candles (probably 24) in one cupcake.
“I have to go, Dewey, I’m afraid that Boyd is about to set my apartment on fire without me, but I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow! Enjoy your fire hazard and your boyfriend.”
“Those are the same thing, Dewey.”
“Then enjoy your fire boyfriend. Boyfire? I dunno.”
“He is pretty fire, isn’t he? Bye, Dewey.”
“Bye!”
“Boyd if you light that you’ll coat that cupcake in so much wax it’ll be disgusting and that’s just a waste of a good cupcake.”
“Then I’ll eat that one. I’m an android I’m not as picky about what is and isn’t cupcake.”
“Sometimes, fortunately not often but sometimes, you remind me so much of Dewey that it’s terrifying.”
“Do you still love me?” Boyd asked, squinting a little and laser lighting the candles. As Louie had assumed it quickly became a soupy, fiery mess.
“More than words can express,” Louie said, capturing Boyd’s lips in a kiss after extinguishing the cupcake.
“Did you make a wish, baby?” Boyd asked, holding Louie close by the hips.
“I don’t need to, everything is going to be okay. In fact, I think that everything is going to be… Perfect.”
“Happy Birthday…”

"Do you know what's up with Jackie?" I asked Sienna and Elijah while we had brunch together at the dining table. Aurora and Jackie were at work but we were off today. "She's been a little jumpy lately."
They looked at each other then back at me.
"I mean I know she had that whole thing with Panacea Labs but I don't know... this feels... different," I explained further. "She won't even tell me what's wrong!"
Elijah let out a cough while Sienna just ate her cereal quietly, suddenly very interested in the little loops floating in milk.
I squinted at them. "You both know something."
Elijah looked away, not wanting to face me but Sienna's head shot up and her eyes widened.
"What? Of course not!" she exclaimed defensively. "Why would we? Right, Elijah?"
She chuckled nervously and I heard her murmur, 'oh god' under her breath. Elijah glared at Sienna and whispered to her 'shhh!'.
"I'm right here!" I threw my arms up in disbelief. "If you guys know something, you better spill! And don't even try lying to me."
"Okay, yeah we know something," Elijah admitted and Sienna gazed at him worriedly. "But we can't tell you, I'm sorry."
"Why not?" I questioned, feeling myself get annoyed. "I'm worried for her, I've never seen Jackie so on edge and it's stressing me out!"
"She's planning to take you out tonight!" Sienna blurted then immediately covered her mouth with her hands.
"Sienna!" Elijah shouted.
"What?" Sienna screamed back. "She was gonna find out eventually! Jackie's gonna call her anytime now!"
And just like magic, my phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Casey," I heard Jackie say nonchalantly. "What's up?"
"Just having brunch with Sienna and Elijah." I shot them a glare and saw them shrink a little in their seats. "Did you need anything?"
"Uh, yeah, actually," she replied awkwardly. "How do you feel about dinner?"
"I have strong feelings about it," I joked. "I don't have it every day but it is pretty important."
I heard her scoff on the other side and I could almost see her eye roll and smile. "I meant with me, doofus."
"Dr. Jackie Varma," I said dramatically. "Are you asking me out on a date?"
"God, I'm regretting it already."
She wasn't.
"That wasn't an answer," I teased.
"Hypothetically, if I were to ask you to put on something nice and get ready by 7 for me to fetch you to take you out for dinner, would you?" she avoided the question and I couldn't help the grin forming on my face.
"Hypothetically, of course!"
"So I'll see you at 7?"
"I thought you said it was hypothetical?" I messed with her.
"Oh my god," she groaned. "You're such a dork, I'll see you later."
I laughed at her frustration. "Alright, alright, bye, have a good day at work."
We hung up and I turned to find Sienna and Elijah looking at me cautiously.
"That's what's been bothering her?"
"Uh, yeah," Elijah sputtered out. "Yup, that's it."
"But I don't get why she's been jumpy, we've been out for dinner together before," I stated, confused.
The only response I got was Elijah shrugging while Sienna covered her mouth.
I narrowed my eyes at them. "Is there anything else you want to tell me?"
"No! Of course not!" Sienna squealed in a voice that was higher than usual.
Obviously, I didn't believe them but I decided to let them off the hook.
"Fine, I'll figure it out myself. But at least just tell me Jackie is alright. Tell me nothing bad happened."
"Nothing like that!" Sienna said immediately.
"She's fine, don't worry about it." That was Elijah.
"Okay. Okay, that's all I need to know."
They were visibly relieved that I dropped the subject but I couldn't help but wonder, what the hell was going on?
~*~*~
It was just before 7p.m. and I was touching up my make up. I leaned back and looked at myself in the mirror to make sure I was presentable.
I was wearing a black body-con mini dress with a plunging neckline that was covered in sequins, making it glitter. My makeup was done to perfection and so was my hair.
I turned to admire my reflection and you know what? Screw presentable.
I looked amazing!
I heard the doorbell ring and I grabbed my purse, rushing out to answer it.
I saw Elijah and Sienna sitting on the couch in the living room watching TV. I remembered him saying something to Sienna about showing her this action series he's been into during brunch but my mind was still too busy on Jackie to be focusing.
"Oh my gosh!" Sienna shouted when she saw me. "You look great!"
"You planning to make Jackie pass out?" Elijah joked.
"Thanks, guys," I laughed and grinned, moving to answer the door.
I opened it and there she stood, the woman I came to care for, who's always had my back and been there for me through thick and thin. The woman I adored and was the most important person to me in the world, staring at me as if she's be struck by lightning.
And I was sure I was looking at her the same way.
She was wearing a dazzling dark blue halter neck dress that ended mid-thighs, showing off her body. The collar was covered in rhinestones and she wore a bracelet to match.
Her hair was in her usual chignon style while her makeup highlighted her already strikingly beautiful features.
Jackie looked gorgeous!
"Damn," she whispered. Her wide eyes started to smoulder and her slightly agape mouth turned into a grin. She bit her lip.
She sauntered up to me and slid her hands to my waist, eyes running up and down my figure and finally landing on my chest. I shivered under her touch and gaze.
"You cleaned up good."
"Are you talking to me or my boobs?" I laughed and she dragged her eyes up to mine, offering me a mischievous smile.
Her hand grabbed onto the back of my neck and she pulled me into a kiss. Our lips met in passionate haste. Her other hand roamed my back as mine rested against her hips. I felt the familiar butterflies start to flutter in the pit of my stomach when she kissed me.
We pulled away when we heard Sienna shout, "Not again! Please!"
We burst out laughing against each other's lips and decided to stop traumatising the poor girl.
"Hey, Sienna, Elijah," Jackie greeted them, peering into our apartment.
They greeted her back and before we could walk away to head to her car, Sienna shouted, "Have fun! Good luck!"
Jackie shut the door in a hurry and placed a hand on the small of my back, leading me away from our apartment.
"Good luck?" I looked at Jackie questioningly. "What for?"
Jackie shrugged her shoulders. "Who knows with that girl."
My brows creased skeptically but once again, brush it off. Maybe she was right.
When we made it to her car, she stopped me.
"Wait, I got something for you." She opened the back door of her car and pulled out a bouquet of sunflowers. She presented them to me, avoiding eye contact and said, "Here."
"Aww, Jackie! This is so sweet!" My heart melted at the sight.
"Yeah, yeah, you're welcome," she murmured.
I accepted them and stepped closer to her. "Aw, you're embarrassed too!"
"I'm not!" she huffed and I giggled, placing a hand on her cheek to direct her gaze to meet mine.
Her skin burned under my touch. Yup, she was definitely blushing.
"You're so cute," I said and gave her a peck on the cheek.
"Not exactly my brand," she said with a sly grin. "But I'll take it."
She opened the passenger's seat door for me and I ushered me in, me still holding the bouquet.
She closed the door behind me and got into the driver's side. She started the engine and pulled out of the car park.
Throughout the entire car ride, Jackie was jittery. I noticed her fingers drumming against the steering wheel which I've come to learn meant that she was nervous even if her face was stoic.
"You okay?" I asked her worriedly.
"Oh, yeah," she said mindlessly and turned the corner.
"If you say so," I said quietly and the rest of the ride was silent until we reached our destination.
Jackie parked a few blocks away so we had to walk to the restaurant. Once again, she opened the door for me and this time, offered me her arm hesitantly.
To say I was shocked was an understatement. It was definitely a pleasant surprise but this was way out of Jackie's character, I wasn't even sure if this was the same woman.
Wordlessly, I looped my arm around hers as we made our way to dinner, trying to neutralise my surprised expression.
We stopped in front of a grand restaurant which definitely looked like a meal here cost more than our rent.
"Jackie!" I turned to her. "We're having dinner here?"
"Yeah, is it too much?" she asked hurriedly. "If it is, we can just go somewhere simpler."
"No! No, it's just that, can we afford this?"
Jackie's face fell into relief. "Oh, don't worry about it, I've been saving up for a while now." She bit her lip and she lead me into the building. "Also the parents of one of my patients owns the place and they said they'd give me a discount but that's not important," she said jokingly with a smile.
I let out a laugh as Jackie checked our reservations with the maître d'. A waiter lead us to our table and we took our seats.
We opened the menus and after a while, Jackie said, "Okay, I have no idea what any of these are."
"Me neither," I giggled, trying to make out some of the words. "I think this one is... duck?"
"How sure are you?"
"Not at all."
We laughed and Jackie spoke.
"Alright, alright, why don't I randomly pick something for you, just tell me when to stop."
She ran her finger up and down the menu.
"Stop!" Jackie stopped her finger and squinted at the menu item her finger landed on. "What is it?"
"As if I know," she replied laughing. "You'll find out later."
I did the same for her and after we ordered when the waiter returned, I asked, "So was this outfit what you were sneaking out in that garment bag this morning?"
"You saw that?" She gave me a surprised look.
"'Cuz I definitely couldn't see it behind your back when you came into my room this morning to kiss me goodbye," I grinned as I watched her soul leave her body.
"You were awake?!"
I nodded, trying to hold back my laughter. "I always am when you do."
"Oh god," she groaned and hid her face behind her hand. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I was waiting for the perfect moment to reveal it so I can tease you and revel in your embarrassment. Which so happens to be now!" I stated proudly.
"That's it, I'm never giving you a forehead kiss ever again." She crossed her arms and slumped in her seat.
"Aw, come on," I reached out to take her hand in mine. "Pleaseeeee?"
She rolled her eyes but fought the grin appearing on her lips. "I'll think about it."
Just then, our food was placed in front of us and we just stared at our respective orders for a good minute.
"What is this?" Jackie asked.
"I wish I knew."
We looked at each other's plates and burst out laughing.
"After you," I said.
"No way, we're doing this together!" She smirked at me. "Unless the great Dr. Valentine is scared of a little..." she trailed off, trying to figure out what was served in front of us. "Whatever that is."
I grinned. "Of course you'd make a competition out of this."
"Hey, less talking, more eating."
We both cut out a small chunk of our food and lifted it to mouths.
"Okay," she said. "Three, two, one..."
Jackie and I bite into the forkful and braced ourselves for the worst. But it wasn't the worst... nor was it the best either?
"I can't tell if I like it or not.. or what this even is," I admitted.
"Me neither."
We looked at each other and started laughing again.
"Let's just stick to sushi next time."
"Agreed," I said, still giggling.
We talked as we ate but I could still sense that Jackie was tense.
"Am I missing something?"
"Hm?"
"The sudden dinner date, the flowers, the opening doors for me," I explained. "Don't get me wrong, I love it, and it's really sweet of you... but you, well, normally you don't do stuff like this. Is there a special occasion today? Did I forget something?"
She glanced at me then back at her food.
"I just wanted to do something nice for you," she said quietly.
I grinned at her, "Well, I definitely won't complain about that, so thank you, but is that it?"
Jackie started playing with her food, obviously trying to avoid the question.
"What's wrong?" I took her hand in mine from across the table. She let me intertwine our fingers together and I squeezed.
"Nothing, nothing, just a little tired from work."
"Jackie..."
She looked me in the eyes and her gaze softened from seeing my worried expression.
"Can we get out of here?" she asked.
"Are you done eating?"
"We can grab a hotdog or something if you want," she grinned and stood up. "Not like you were actually enjoying it, right?"
I chuckled and let Jackie guide me out of the restaurant.
When we got out, she turned to the opposite direction from where she parked her car.
"Er, where are you going?"
"To go get you a hotdog," she motioned me to follow her. "There's a stand nearby. Also, I need to talk with you."
Uhhh, that didn't sound good.
"Talk to me?" I puzzled, worried. "About what?"
"Nothing bad, don't worry, I'll explain after I get you some food."
She bought me a hot dog but didn't get one for herself.
"You don't want one?"
"Nah," she shook her head. "And I, uh, I'm not gonna lie, a little too nervous to think about food right now."
"Why...?"
She took a deep breath as we strolled down the empty street. "Promise me you won't say anything until I'm done? I just... I have to get it all out."
"Is that why you got me a hotdog?" I tried to lighten the mood even though I could feel my heart sink to my stomach. "To shut me up while you talk?"
She snorted. "Even if I did, would you complain?"
"About getting free food? Never."
"Exactly," she let out a soft laugh.
I glanced at her and I knew she was trying to gather her thoughts. I let her, finishing my hot dog in the meantime. Finally, after a few minutes, she spoke up.
"Okay," she began. "I think it's pretty obvious, I'm not one for romance. I'm not the most romantic and I'm no good at it. But it didn't matter, because I thought it was a waste of time, that relationships were a waste of time. I was used to hookups and one-night-stands. And when I first saw you, I thought it would be the same." She paused for a moment and glanced at me. "Except it wasn't."
My heartbeat picked up at her confession and my eyes never left her face even though she wasn't looking at me. A million emotions raced in me.
"I told you during our intern year that I was avoiding you because you were a distraction. Which was true, but I was also avoiding you because I couldn't remember the last time I felt this way about someone. Or if I ever have. I don't do the whole relationship thing, hell, the last was probably in high school. And I thought I'd never get into another one again... but then you came along. I pushed you away but you were still there for me."
She stopped walking and I followed. She looked me in the eyes, gaze never wavering and I stared back into hers. You didn't have to, but you did and suddenly, I could picture me doing all of this... with you. The romance, the commitment, everything. I've never cared about anyone more than I do you. You're the most important thing in my life, Casey. And I don't want to lose you."
She inhaled deeply and slowly let it out, steeling herself to say the next words. "So what I'm asking is... what I'm trying to say... ugh!" she slid her hand over her face and blurted out, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
She composed herself and cautiously took both my hands in hers, adding on softly, “And can I be yours?”
I looked at her, stunned. “Really?”
“Uh, yeah,” Jackie let go of hands rubbed the back of her neck. “Unless, you don’t want to,” she quickly said. “The forget I even asked-“
I cut her off by pulling her into me by the waist, smashing my lips against hers. Hers arms instinctively made their way around my neck to bring me closer. I could feel her racing heart drumming against my own as our lips moved in sync, passion crashing between us.
I broke off the kiss, feeling breathless, arms still around each other. "Yes!"
Jackie laughed blissfully into the night, "Yeah, I think you made it pretty clear."
“That’s why you’ve been skittish all week?”
Jackie scoffed. “I have not been skittish.”
“You so have been!” I argued. “That explains the flowers and everything!”
“That’s Bryce’s idea,” she muttered. “Blame the Scalpel Jockey for most of it.”
“More like thank him,” I laughed. “I can definitely see Bryce written all over this evening.”
“Ugh, I can’t believe I went to him for advice,” she smiled. “I must have been pretty desperate.”
I giggled. “And I’m guessing Bryce told Sienna and Elijah?”
“And Raf and Kyra. And Sienna told Aurora,” she went on. “They were more excited than me.”
“’Cuz you were peeing your pants?” I teased.
She rolled her eyes but let out a small grin. “I plead the fifth.”
“Whatever you say, girlfriend.”
Jackie beamed and pulled me back into her. “Shut up,” she whispered against my lips as she kissed me.
And so there we stood, under the streetlight with no one else in sight, trapped in each other’s arms as our lips locked in an embrace, with me finally getting to call this amazing woman my girlfriend.

Only the Light: Ch. 10
10/? | AU where Melissa moves in with Scully after Scully’s abduction | angst, msr slow-burn, occasional fluff | currently: s2, ep 12, Aubrey (post-ep) | T (for now?) | 4.5k | previous chapters | read on ao3 | tagging: @today-in-fic
Missy accompanies Scully to a doctor's appointment. Afterward, Missy confronts Scully about her feelings for Mulder, and Scully slips-up on the phone.
-----------------------------
She digs through her suitcase, searching for the business card she tucked in the pocket with her underwear. A sharp edge penetrates her skin, stings immediately. Her fingers close around the paper card and pull it out. A thin red cut traces the length of her middle finger, blood begging to seep out. She ignores it and grabs the phone off her nightstand, plugging in the number for the Aubrey Motel.
As she’s dialing, she realizes that it’s already past lunchtime in DC, and even though Missouri is an hour behind, there’s no way Mulder is in his room. She lets it ring anyway, then asks the man who answers for room 12. He patches her through, and sure enough, the line rings until it gives up.
Impressed by her own newfound patience, Scully hangs up and dials Mulder’s cell instead. She’s not exactly sure why she didn’t just do this in the first place; maybe she likes the idea of Mulder being stationary without her, stuck in his room like a lost little boy with no one to guide him. Her heart sinks when she thinks about Mulder gallivanting around Aubrey, solving the case like there’s nothing to it, like he could have been doing it by himself all this time. She wants him to need her. Naturally, she is ashamed of this desire.
She hits the call button and waits while an invisible force shoots across states and connects her to her partner. She does not have to wait long; he answers after the first ring.
“Hello?” He sounds the same as always. Simultaneously there and drifting, one body split between two minds.
“Mulder, it’s me.”
“Hey Scully.” There is a lightness in his voice now, like a balloon cut free of its tether. He is smiling, she thinks...She hopes.
“I just wanted to let you know I made it home safely…” She trails off, not wanting to stop talking to him, but finding herself with nothing else to say.
“I’m glad, Scully.” He always addresses her by name more when they are apart. This is a comfort to both of them. “How’s Melissa?”
Scully looks through the doorway, confirming that her sister is nowhere near to cause any antics. “She’s alright.” She deals in half-truths. “We’re going to the doctor later to get an x-ray, but I think it’s just a sprain.”
“Well, keep me updated. I found a lead on the case--Harry Cokely, the suspect of one of the 1945 murders. I’m on my way to see him. He’s been out of jail since ‘93.”
Scully gulps. “Are you alone?”
“Uh-huh.” He senses her tension through the line. “But I’ll be fine, Scully, he’s an old geezer now. What kind of agent am I if I can’t defend myself against an eighty year old?”
“You could have taken BJ with you.”
“And put a pregnant woman in the line of fire? I’ll be fine, Scully. They wouldn’t have let him out if he were still a danger.”
“Okay, Mulder.” This is not what she means, but it has already been a long day, and there is too much left of it to get into an argument with him.
“I might be able to come back tomorrow,” she blurts out, as if saying it will make it more true. “...I’d like to come back tomorrow.”
“Take all the time you need, Scully. I’ve got this.”
She knows he is trying to be accommodating-- though he so rarely is--but his casual manner confirms her worst fears about her own superfluity. “I want to work, Mulder, you know that.”
“I’m not gonna stop you.” Then, his voice uneven, suspecting but not willing to confront--”Just take care of Melissa--and yourself--okay?”
She nods into the phone. “I will.”  She is staring at the barrel of Mulder’s metaphorical gun, knowing he won’t shoot, almost wishing he would. Bleeding out feels like the simple solution. “Bye, Mulder.”
She is leaving so soon, he thinks, grateful to have had her voice accompanying him on the trip. “Bye, Scully. Call the motel tonight, will you?”
“Alright.” She kills the line, each extra second another thorn in her side, a lie allowed to linger. Sin multiplying.
She stands there, clasping the phone in her hand and feeling like a stranger to herself. Her sister thought she should tell him before she flew a thousand miles and let an hour fall between them, and she disobeyed. What Melissa didn’t understand was that vulnerability is not a word in her and Mulder’s shared language. There’s no way to spell out the situation, even if she had wanted to. And she didn’t want to at the time. Or rather, she had wanted to so badly that it was dangerous, that she knew she risked more pain by telling than by withholding. She would have had to invent new words in their language, expand its bounds, and who knows what would come next. Give someone the language to express their feelings, and they will say them. And what then?
She is scared of her own feelings--and his too--because she knows that admitting means losing, somewhere down the road, and she doesn’t ever want to be without him. If she had never met him, she would never have to live without him. This is the gun that is always pressed to her head. She and Mulder are both holding the trigger.
She doesn’t know if he has such a gun against his temple, thinks that maybe he doesn’t, hopes so at least. There have been others for him, she knows this. Phoebe and...well, Phoebe’s the only one she’s met, and she wasn’t that impressive. But he’s a good-looking guy, and a good guy at that, and the whispers of a dark-haired woman who broke his heart float up and down the hallways of the Hoover building. He doesn’t tell, and Scully won’t ask because she worries that the mystery woman is the gun he holds against his own head.
She sets the phone back in its receiver, tired of thinking about guns and triggers and brains blown out. For now, she is in one piece--she’s pretty sure--and she would like to stay that way for as long as her soul will let her.
Her sister calls from down the hallway. “Dana, are you ready?”
Scully managed to book a last-minute appointment with her OB-GYN, thanks to Missy’s insistence that it was an emergency. Personally, she wouldn’t use such a strong word--I mean, it’s not like she’s hemorrhaging or anything. It’s the absence of blood that’s the problem. But there are tests, scans, and probing of the like that can be done, and once Scully admitted this her sister would not drop the issue. Off to every woman’s favorite place they go.
--------
The waiting room is a stepping stone, a purgatory, a beginning and an ending rolled into one. She has been here before, many times. In the past, it felt like an inconvenience, not a threat.
She makes an appointment every year, does everything exactly as she is supposed to do in between, and still she is here and scared. She is careful as careful comes, as prepared as one petite woman alone in the world can be. She can dislocate a jaw, strike a man’s legs out from under him, break a nose. And yet, and yet, and yet...Who first uttered “fairness,” thought it existed on this Earth?
Even so, the consolation of knowing lingers in the distance. Like the minutes between calling 911 and the ambulance arriving. Help is on the way. The nightmare will end, or it will settle in. Lucky or unlucky. Win or lose.
Scully is not sure what she wants to hear. Three tests is quite definitive; pregnancy is unlikely. And what else is there? That her cycle has been thrown off by stress, that it’ll come back on its own time, don’t worry about it? That’s no comfort. She doesn’t want something to be wrong with her, but she knows something’s not right, and what’s worse than knowing that you don’t know? She and Mulder have lived in that hell for years. She can handle mysteries of the outside world, but what a cruel trick for her own body to blockade her.
Missy nudges her from the adjacent vinyl seat, elbow meeting bicep. “What are you thinking about?”
“How my mind doesn’t know what’s going on with my own body,” Scully replies dryly. “I mean, I know I have a tendency to close myself off, but I’ve cloistered myself so much I no longer know what I am.”
Melissa frowns. “Don’t you mean who? Who you are?”
“No.” Scully shakes her head, looks at her lap. In her darkest thoughts and most blistering nightmares, she is not human anymore. They desecrate her, ravage her body, and leave a memento in her skin, a touch of them. It’s so vivid it might be a memory. Mulder wants an alien; he may have one. That would be ironic, huh?
Can you learn to believe in yourself when you become something you never thought existed?
Can you still believe in God?
Every job she has dreamed of doing involves solving. Knowing enough to know what you don’t know, then figuring that out. Taking the pencil lines, shading them in. Seeking and finding and never wondering why. She cannot keep this up. There has got to be a meaning.
It is not enough, anymore, to simply wonder for the sake of wondering. To cast light over the darkness because you are tired of the darkness. Why? Is she doing it for Mulder, for the traumatized twelve-year boy locked inside him? Is she doing it for herself, fending off the fallibility, reconciling her belief with proof so that she can get off her own back? Or is she doing it because she was told to, because she is still the daddy’s girl who wants to please?
Twenty-nine years, and she is still coming to terms with herself. We are all our own x-file. We are all taking ourselves apart and piecing ourselves back together and looking for meaning and losing our minds.
Missy reaches over the wooden arm of the seat and pats Scully’s hand. Scully is reminded that she hasn’t yet ruled out the possibility that her sister is a mind-reader.
“Dana?” a nurse calls. Her first name feels so secondary that Scully feels certain they’re calling someone else.
“Right here!” Missy responds, getting up and pulling her sister along with her. Scully tugs her sister’s sleeve like a child might, wonders if Missy has ever considered motherhood.
Once in the corridor, they separate. The nurse takes Scully to get her vitals checked, while Melissa seeks out waiting room D, where the nurse’s flat voice--already tired from hours on the job--told her to wait.
It is not long before her sister joins her there.
“How was it?” Missy asks before Dana even manages to sit down.
Scully shrugs. She turns her left hand to show the pink bandaid on her index finger. “My iron levels are above average.”
“That’s not serious, right?”
“No, it’s usually a good thing.”
They sit quietly, listening to the staticky alt rock song coming through the speakers. They are alone in this particular area, but nurses and doctors bustle just around the corner from them.
Scully regards her sister with a latent curiosity. “Have you ever thought about having children?”
Missy turns to her, laughs. “What?”
Scully is somewhat perturbed by her sister’s nonchalant reaction. “Do you want to be a mother?” she reiterates. “It’s not something we’ve talked about since we were kids, so I was wondering.”
“If my life unfolds that way, then surely I think I’d enjoy it. But I’m not prioritizing it.”
“Ahh.” Her sister has always had a particular reverence for destiny.
“And besides,” Missy continues, “it could be hard, you know, with Trinity and all.”
It takes Scully a moment to realize what she means. “Oh.” That’s something she’s never had to worry about herself. She runs her finger along the grooves of her bandaid, feels her heart clench up for her sister. “There’s always adoption.”
“Yeah, I guess so. It’s a long, drawn-out process from what I’ve heard.”
“Mmm.” Scully nods, wondering how two women could have two such conflicting problems.
Before she can voice the irony of this, another nurse pops out from around the corner, peers at a clipboard. “Dana Scully?” Her voice is bright and chipper.
“That’s me,” Scully says, raising a hand to show the bandaid, her battle scar.
“I’ll show you to your room.”
Missy pats Dana’s shoulder as she stands up. “I’ll stay here. Come get me if you need me.”
“Okay,” Scully breathes, grateful to be given her space yet to know support is right around the corner.
----------------
For someone that went to medical school--and enjoyed it, for that matter--Scully always feels much too out of place in a gynecology office. It’s nothing she hasn’t seen before. In textbook diagrams, in wall art, in her own flesh. Yet the 3D model of the reproductive system, the color-coded illustration of the uterus, and the various pamphlets on everything from STDs to birth control to what to expect postnatal smother her, serving as a fresh reminder that Catholicism’s tendency to repress haunts her still. She’s more bothered by her involuntary discomfort than what she sees.
Dr. Zapolsky enters, easing some of Scully’s nerves immediately. Tall and dark-skinned, she has been practicing medicine for 20 years, and Scully has been seeing her since she moved to Washington. She can be intimidating if you don’t know her, but she’s honest and extremely competent, two things Scully requires of her doctors. And herself.
“Hello, Dana.” Scully sits up straighter as the woman’s voice hits her eardrums. She’s admired Dr. Zapolsky for years, seeing her as an exemplary figure, someone that might have been a mentor to her had she put her medical degree to work. “What can I do for you today?”
There are few things Scully hates as much as being the patient. If she’s the patient, that means she has failed at being her own doctor. That means she didn’t know--and worse--didn’t think she could figure it out on her own.
She wrings her hands. “My cycle is over a week late, which is very concerning considering that it’s always been timely. I’ve been having migraines and nausea and nightmares, and I just know something is wrong.”
Dr. Zapolsky drops Scully’s file on the counter. “Well, the pregnancy portion of your urine test came back negative.”
“I took three drugstore pregnancy tests too, and they were all negative. That’s why I’m here.”
“Have you had any notable lifestyle changes over the past few months?” Dr. Zapolsky asks. “Anything out of the ordinary? Stress is a major contributor to fluctuations in the menstrual cycle, as I’m sure you know.”
Scully nods, gathers herself. Dr. Zapolsky is oblivious to the rabbithole she has just fallen into. “I was, um, abducted, about eight weeks ago, and I have no memory of it.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, Dana.” Dr. Zapolsky wheels her stool beside the medical chair. “We have a bit of catching up to do.”
“Yes,” Scully looks at her feet. They dangle a few inches above the tile like a child’s. Nothing new. She glances back at her doctor. “There isn’t much to say. I don’t know anything about what happened.”
“Well, tell me what you do know.” Then, seeing the apprehension on Scully’s face--”I’m not trying to play therapist, I just want to understand.”
Scully blinks slowly to keep from crying. It goes like this, it always does: she can manage the trauma until she has to say it out loud. This is a story no one wants to be in, but everyone wants to hear.
“I was taken by a man involved in a case that I worked on. Well, that my partner worked on, actually. I got involved--and long and complicated story short--the man broke into my apartment, bound my wrists and ankles, and stuffed me in his trunk. That’s the part I do remember. After the trunk, it’s all a blur really.”
The doctor furrows her brow. “How were you found?”
“I wasn’t found, I was returned. To the hospital. None of the staff had any idea how I got there, and I was bathed and cleaned by my abductors so no trace evidence was collected.”
“So no rape kit was done, then?”
Scully shakes her head.
The doctor uncrosses her legs, recrosses them with the opposite leg on top. “How long were you missing?”
“About a month...My mother bought me a gravestone, she didn’t think I would be found.” This is a detail she has never spoken out loud. Saying it feels like letting air out of an over-inflated balloon.
“I’m so sorry, Dana.” Dr. Zapolsky lifts a hand, then puts it back in her lap. “May I hug you?” Scully nods and lets herself be embraced, though she does not feel it necessary. “That sounds like a horrific ordeal.”
Scully shrugs as best she can with Dr. Zapolsky’s arms wrapped around her. “It comes with the job.” Always modest about her suffering, she is.
Dr. Zapolsky speaks into Scully’s ear. “No, I don’t think it does.”
The doctor lets go. Scully doesn’t say anything. She curls the fingers of her left hand around her right wrist and squeezes hard enough to be certain that it’ll leave a mark.
Dr. Zapolsky slides her stool back over to the counter, flips through Scully’s file.
“I’d say the best course of action is to start with a blood test. I’ll check a few hormone levels---follicle-stimulating, anti-mullerian, luteinizing. That’ll give some insight into your pituitary gland function and your egg reserve.”
Scully nods along. Those hormones are complicated names she barely remembers, but she trusts it’s the right course of action.
“With that, we can determine whether this is a symptom of a larger problem, or if it’s simply a result of the stress you’ve been under. It should only take a couple days to get the results back.”
Scully nods, bites her lip. More waiting.
“Have you been seeing a therapist by any chance?” Dr. Zapolsky asks.
Scully shakes her head. Dr. Zapolsky should know her better than that.
“Well, I highly recommend it even to those who have not gone through any trauma. And for a survivor, it can truly be life-changing.”
A survivor. What is she, a war hero? That word is fitting for her father, who lived on the sea and sought eternal rest there. Not her.
“Thank you, but I’m okay.” Scully cannot meet her doctor’s glance.
“If you need any referrals, I can give you some names.” Dr. Zapolsky is just trying to help, Scully knows this, but this is not the help she came here for.
“The FBI has an on-site psychologist,” she says to close the subject.
“Oh, what a wonderful resource.”
“Most definitely.” Scully smiles weakly and ducks her head, ready to get out of here.
-------
There are many things she is afraid of, but physical pain is not one of them. The unknown, slow but certain death--these are the things that spook Dana Scully. When you’ve spent years being told that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, you are prepared to suffer for honor.
This is simply the prick of a needle, a relinquishing. Doctors used to prescribe it as the cure for any ailment, believing it to vanquish toxins from the body. Med school would have been a lot simpler if that were true.
She watches the blood flow out of her veins and into the vial. Some people can’t look; she can’t look away. Missy is seated in the chair next to her, chin resting in her palm after her offer to hold Scully’s hand was rejected. She traces the path of her sister’s blue eyes as they slide from her arm to the vial in the nurse’s hand. Dana has never been afraid to look--that’s the problem.
In an instant, it is done. The nurse smooths a bandage over Scully’s skin, tells her they will call with the results in a few days. And then it is two sisters, going, going, gone.
----------
They have a pleasant ride home, a soft and sisterly evening in. The prospect of Dana going back to Aubrey in the morning never even comes up, much to Melissa’s relief. Perhaps the illusion of normalcy her sister pedals in her head has finally given way to their unreal reality. They don’t waste a moment on the uncertainty circling them, instead curling up on the couch with popcorn and gummy bears for another Golden Girls marathon.
“Which one do you think Mulder is?” Missy asks during a slow moment in the episode.
“Huh?” Scully laughs. “Which Golden Girl, you mean?”
“Uh-huh.” Missy pops a red gummy in her mouth. “Or is he too interesting to be pinned down?” she teases, mimicking the swoony non-answer he gave about Scully some weeks ago.
“I don’t know honestly,” she says, pushing a blanket out of her lap. “I’m not sure that I know him well enough to decide.”
“You’re kidding.” Missy glares at her. Clearly her sister has not dropped the illusion after all.
“No, I’m not,” Scully intones, getting up to refill the gummy bear bowl. “And that reminds me, he wanted me to call.” She glances at the clock. It’s half past 8 there, so surely Mulder is back in his motel room.
Missy isn’t letting her off the hook that easily. She follows her sister into the kitchen. “Dana, I guarantee that you know him better than anyone else in the world. If they conducted a test on every single living human being’s knowledge of Fox Mulder, you would get the highest score.”
“Knowledge isn’t the same as understanding,” Scully murmurs, dumping the remaining gummy bears into the bowl.
“I’ll give you that, but you know what? You do understand him, you’re just too afraid to confront it.”
Scully wants to recoil, but freezes in place instead. It’s just as dramatic but gives less away. After a breath, she crumples the plastic bag into a ball and dunks it swiftly into the wastebasket.
She speaks rigidly, each word cutting through the air. “If I understood him, there would be no fear.”
Missy feels this in her chest--the aching, the truth in her sister’s voice. Dana is as close to crying as she ever gets. Missy strides over, clasps her sister’s hands in hers. “You don’t have to be scared.” She pulls her little sister in, squeezes her heart to Dana’s own. “He loves you. And I’m not talking about in a romantic way--I don’t know, maybe--but just in general. He loves you, and he would never hurt you.”
Scully’s eyes are glassy with tears now, but Melissa cannot see this in the midst of their hug. “Haven’t you ever been hurt by someone who loves you?” She says into Missy’s ear. “We never mean it, but it happens. It happens all the time.”
“And then you apologize, and you go on. Being hurt once doesn’t mean being hurt forever.”
“It can.” Scully pulls away, wipes her cheeks before her sister can overanalyze.
“It won’t, not with Mulder. I know enough about him to know that.” She brushes her sister’s hair out of her face. “If anyone was going to cut off the relationship, it would be you.”
“Wha--” Scully gives up the protest. She is partial to burning bridges that are prone to collapse, a last-ditch attempt at dignity. Yet Mulder doesn’t strike her as a bridge that would burn even if she set it aflame. Maybe that’s worse though, it prolongs the struggle.
“Hurting him would be worse than getting hurt,” Scully mutters.
“Loving him would be better than not loving him,” Melissa responds.
“The correct phrasing of that argument is ‘loving him would be better than being loved,’ if you wanted to copy my logic.” Scully gets curt and analytical when she’s annoyed.
“Hmm, well, consider that too.”
Their eyes meet and Scully can tell that neither one of them is going to win. “I’ve got to call him before it gets too late.” They both know who he is. She turns on her heels and heads for her room.
--------
He didn’t pick up the first time she called, which scared her more than she’s willing to admit. She sat cross-legged on her bed until the phone rang again about twenty minutes later, until she heard his voice on the other line.
“Hey Scully, sorry, I was out wrapping up the case.”
“Wrapping up?” She doesn’t even bother to say hello. “It’s over?”
“Open and shut...or, err, something like that.”
“What happened?” Her voice strains for no reason. She clears her throat.
“I’ll catch you up some other time,” he says breezily. “How’s Melissa doing?”
For a moment, Scully forgets her lie and tries to figure out why he’s asking about her sister and not her. Then--”Oh! She’s okay, yeah, it was a sprain like we suspected. Nothing broken on the x-ray. She can just about walk normally now, I think she’ll be off crutches by tomorrow.” Embellish, embellish, embellish. Missy had taught her to lie in the 6th grade, and she finally had some use for that knowledge.
“That’s great! I’m flying back tomorrow morning, I can be at the office by 10 if you wanna meet me there.”
“Will you tell me about the case? And BJ? How is she?”
“I’ll...I’ll tell you that tomorrow, Scully.” There’s a bit of gravel in his voice, which Scully has noticed comes out when he’s tired or holding back.
“Fine. Should I assume that by 10, you mean 10:30?”
“Well, you know how the line at the Dulles Chick-fil-A gets,” he wisecracks.
Something goes wrong between her brain and her tongue as she goes to wrap up the conversation. “Alright, 10:30. Love you, bye.”
Mulder makes a noise like a stifled laugh or a cough that couldn’t be held in. “What was that, Scully?”
Her face is flushed, and she’s thankful he can’t see it. “Sorry, I’ve been talking to Missy on the phone a lot lately. Habit.” The voice flowing out of her sounds calm and collected, like that was just an honest mistake. In a way it was...a much too honest one that has made her anything but calm.
“Oh, is that who you say that to?” he teases.
She laughs. Surely he couldn’t think there’s anyone else, could he?
“Just Missy, and maybe my mom.” She says it like a promise. He hears it like a prayer. Unusual, for both of them.
“Bye, Mulder,” she says, ushering any sentimentality away.
“Bye, Scully. Hate you. Oh, sorry--that’s what I say to my dad on the phone.”
Scully giggles into the phone. She’s still giggling as she sets the phone back on the hook.
Even after the call flat-lines, Mulder holds the phone against his ear like it’s a seashell echoing Scully’s giggle back to him.

I get behind the wheels while Max is yelling something from his SUV. My phone buzzes right at the same moment. I roll down the glass to listen to him, and receive the phone call with my other hand.
“Hello!” says the sharp voice over phone.
“Livy?”
“Happy birthday…” her sound is drowned against the shout out from Max, “Happy birthday grumpy guy!” Hana and Riley laugh out loudly.
I give him a glare and roll the glass up and focus back on the call.
“Umm… thank you.”
“I see you are busy with someone.” She says with a sarcastic tone. “Since when did you start partying? Seems you are a changed man.”
“Look who's talking!” I sneer back.
“What do you mean?”
“At least I don't keep secrets.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about. Anyways, I think I should leave you with your commoner friends to enjoy. Bye.”
And just like that she drops the call.
“What the hell!” I shout at my phone.
Why did she call? To wish me or to irritate me? Why does she spoil everything! Damn! I was so happy, for once, but she had to call up and mess it all. I rev up the engine and hit the road with a surge of anger. I drive down to the Applewood manor and decide to call it a day.
-----------
Morning comes with a fresh start. The court and nobles are all busy celebrating the Apple blossom festival with their king and queen while I keep myself occupied by the stables. I check the horses selected for next day’s event -the foxhunt, where a mountain trail is to be covered on horse’s back. I know as soon as they conclude the festival in orchards, the excited nobles will turn to stables to tend to their rides for tomorrow. I want to make myself scarce before that.
I am about to leave when Riley visits the stables with Bertrand. She is the first one to come, as she doesn’t have a horse of her own. Liam follows them.
After exchanging pleasantries, we get to business of choosing her ride.
“I love horse riding but I have no idea how to choose the horse.” Riley says perturbed.
Liam takes the opportunity before Bertrand can reply. “Why don’t you let me do it instead?”
“That will be great!” Riley claps excitedly.
They both start looking at the unclaimed horses, and Bertrand tags along. I observe the couple keenly. They are so relaxed in each other’s company. Liam forgets all his worries around her, and Riley is like a live wire in his presence, full of energy and enthusiasm. I love to see them together. I wish…!
They turn around and Riley jumps up. “Hey Walker, I am not just borrowing, I am buying a horse.!”
“Really?” I look at Bertrand wide eyed.
“I can’t believe you talked me into this.” Bertrand says in an annoyed tone, looking between Liam and Riley.
“ Congratulations!” I try to distract Bertrand.
I help Riley by checking Belle, the horse she selected. While Bertrand starts discussing official things with Liam, Riley is enraptured in narrating the events that she experienced at the festival. “You should have been there. We had such a good time. I was in Olivia’s team.”
I am busy inspecting Belle but I stiffen on mention of Livy’s name. I curse myself for the reaction. I need to get over the differences between us. I promise myself to act better next time.
Riley continues, “ We made an apple pie and you won’t believe our team won. I think our winning streak was Hana’s specially crafted roses on the crust. I tell you, that girl has so much talent!” I can see Riley’s eyes trying to find some reaction from me but I simply nod in agreement.
I pat Belle and give my approval to Riley.. “Here, all good to go!” They wrap up the deal, and we all walk out.
There are other nobles who pay visit. The stable boys help them out. There is nothing major, where my services are required. So, I take a stroll around the lush gardens of the manor. I have my plans to sit near the lake, my favourite hideout since childhood. But when I walk down to the edge of the gardens, my eyes fall on the figure who has seized my special place already.
She is lost in her thoughts, her eyes staring far away into the horizon, where the sky is pink and the golden ball of sun is about to drown itself into the unknown lands. The ebbs in the water are shining with the ochre reflections. Her calm form is adding into the serenity of the landscape. I stand there absorbing the beauty of nature for some time before I walk towards her, as much discreetly as I can.
“Hana!” I call out softly. I don’t want to disturb the tranquillity surrounding her.
She turns to look at me. Our eyes meet and she beams, “Marshmallow!” She stifles a laugh. Her teasing brings a smile on my face.
I rub the back of my neck, beaming at her. She moves making space next to her and pats her hand guiding me to sit beside her. We both sit there quietly, listening to each other’s breath, till she leaves a sigh, and shakes her head, as if disagreeing with her own thoughts.
“What is it Hana?” I ask with concern.
“I don’t know what to do. Since my childhood, I have been trained to be part of the court. Each class, each lesson was meant to place me at a higher pedestal in front of the nobles. This continuous struggle to achieve something, fulfilling their expectations” she purses her lips, “it’s tiring. I want to live a carefree life, where I live for myself. Where it is okay to make mistakes. Where I can build up a small house and fill it up with my desires to make it a home.”
“That’s a beautiful wish. What is it that’s stopping you?”
“My parents want to see me married to some noble.” She lowers her eyelashes avoiding eye contact with me. “I know they anticipate of something I can’t live up to.”
“It’s your life Hana, your parents should not be the ones making decisions for you.”
She gets up, frustrated, and takes few steps towards the waters. “That’s the whole problem.” She says. “The culture from where I come is very different. Its closed environment with families dominated by parents. It’s hard for me to explain that even if they pressurize me to do things, I still love them. I don’t want to hurt them. I want them to understand my choices.”
I walk up to her, and clasp her shoulders to turn her to me. Her usually peaceful eyes seem to be deep into some storm, piercing into mine, searching for the shores. Yet, it doesn’t falter my mind, instead it seems to be encouraging me to make stronger resolutions. “Take baby steps. Break your desires into tiny goals and try achieving one at a time.”
Her mind is still out on a wild chase as she rests her soft little palms on me. Her touch acts like a pacifier for my pacing heart. Her lips quiver to pour out the questions her eyes have stored. “How will I answer them? What will I say if they ask?”
“We will cross the bridge when we reach there.” I reply. I see the storm in her eyes calming down as the soothing honey colour dances in them again. She closes the distance between us. Her head rests on my chest and our arms embrace each other.
My eyes take in the view at the horizon. The pink of the sky has changed to purple. The waters are dark and the twilight sparkles over the lake. The storm that left her eyes suddenly is hitting the waves of my mind. 'We will cross the bridge… I said to her. Why did I promise myself into it? What am I doing? I am letting myself fall into valley of flowers, except that these flowers are going to be roses, roses with thorns. I don’t know how many wounds they will create before the eternal bliss.
“Thank you for being there for me.” Her mellow tone creates another smooth wave, overpowering my self-destructive thoughts. ‘We WILL cross the bridge…' a voice inside me resonates.
We start walking back to the manor. “Ready for tomorrow’s hunt?” I ask her.
“Yes. It’s going to be fun. I can practice my dressage.”
“You have a training in horse-riding?” I stop in my tracks and turn to her, wide eyed.
“Yes. Why are you so shocked?” She says in a casual manner.
“You never cease to amaze me.” I shake my head and start walking again. “It’s definitely going to be fun tomorrow.”
----------------
We start early morning with the trail. There is a long line of nobles trotting on their horses across the countryside. Liam is up ahead with the king, while I am at the tail end of the group with Max. We are talking about the turn of events since our new york trip just before the social season.
“What made you take that instant decision of sponsoring Riley for the social season?” I ask Max.
“Have you ever seen Liam so happy? Have you observed the way he looks at her?”
“Yeah, I was thinking the same the other day.”
“It was this look, that made me take the decision.” He confirms as our eyes gaze at Riley riding beside Hana at a distance ahead of us.
I have another question in my mind, and ask,“What is wrong with Bertrand though?” I remember his annoyance at the stable a day ago. “He is so serious nowadays.”
“House Beaumont is juggling a bit with some financial matters and since father left, Bertrand has taken it up as his sole responsibility to keep up the name.” Max's expressions brighten up, “Don’t worry. It’s nothing much. Lord Maxwell is here for the rescue.” He strikes a knight pose riding his horse.
We laugh it out. Max makes sure to keep everything cool and under control, always. A quality, I admire.
------------
“You are not the one to lose. What’s the secret?”
We have covered mountain trail, and reached the tiny village. Hana did not fail to impress with her horseback skills. But when the king announced the horseback race at the last leg for the suitors, Hana finished second.
Throughout the trail she has been either with Riley or Penelope or Kiara, and now finally I get a chance to talk to her. That is when I ask her.
“You noticed.” She smiles. “I would be sitting with the prince for the dinner had I won.”
“So?”
“So, who would have given our poor little marshmallow a company?” she pouts her lips.
I know I am grinning, ear to ear, with that comment. “Thank you Lady Hana for giving me the honour!”
We sit down for the feast. My friend’s all around me. Riley and Liam making me believe that there will be that one person in your life who will make a difference. Max, bringing the best out of worst and Hana, my new person, making me realise that not all is lost when there is still one thing that keeps us going – hope.

Quarantine 6
Tumblr media
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader (online)
A/N: Heya guys! Here’s part 6! I hope you enjoy it, and part 7 is already written and will be posted sometime this coming week :)
Warnings: Flirting, language, quarantine, feels, fluff, some sad talk, talk of the freight car incident, insecurities
Today was the day.
This was it.
There were rules, of course.
The door should stay shut at first.. until you’re both comfortable.
And most importantly..
No contact… no matter how much the both of you wanted it.
It was the weirdest first date you were ever going to experience for sure, but ultimately the one most worth it, too.
He was bringing his own beer, and you had some wine left over from Sam’s delivery three weeks ago.
It didn’t seem like it had been that long, but then again, you had learned time wasn’t real in quarantine.
You get dressed in comfy, but cute clothes. Sweatpants and an off the shoulder sweater seem like a good idea, and after applying the lightest bit of makeup to your face you feel like you’re almost ready for this kind-of date.
Grabbing a few snacks, your wine glass and an unopened bottle, you set everything up next to the pillow you’ve placed right in front of your apartment door.
You were completely prepared.
He texted you forty five minutes ago that he was on his way, and he’s supposed to knock four times when he’s here.
You, of course, wouldn’t open the door, but it was enough to let you know he was really there.
Even though you knew he couldn’t see you, there was still a nervousness that lingered in your body.
Was it going to be awkward? Hell yeah. Were you both not going to know what to say at first? Absolutely. You just had to keep telling yourself it would be worth it.
You’re pouring yourself a glass of wine when four very soft knocks sound at your door.
Knock. Knock knock. Knock.
The pattern reminds you of a heartbeat.
Your own.
“J?” You ask through the door, and his reply is a nervous laugh.
“Yeah, doll. It’s me.”
You hear rustling for a few moments, the sounds of him making himself comfortable.
“I um.. I left you a cushion out there to sit on, so you wouldn’t be sitting on the ground.”
As soon as you say it, you hear a soft thump, surely the sound of him letting it fall to your doormat.
“How’s it going in there?” He wonders after a few minutes. The sound of him cracking open his beer can be heard, and it reminds you of the glass in your hand.
“It's um.. It’s good. I have my wine and snacks. How about you?”
He hums, and you take note of how it sounds different in person, rather than over the phone or on mic. “S’good. Just opened my beer.” He laughs softly before he speaks again, “Gotta be honest, I didn’t realize this would feel so..”
“Weird?” You finish for him.
He releases another laugh and a hum. “Yeah.. I’m sorry, doll. I just..”
“I know.” He just wanted to be there, with you.
“Just close your eyes while we talk for a little while. It’ll be just like we’re on the phone.” It was good advice, you had to admit, and though you weren’t usually one for taking your own, you make an exception this time to calm your erratic pulse.
Seconds turn to minutes, and minutes to hours.
Before you realize it, J has been on your porch for nearly three hours. You’re two glasses of wine deep and finally feeling your walls come down.. And hoping he feels the same.
“How are you feeling.. About this?” A simple question, yes, but you wanted him to feel safe, here with you.
A soft sigh is heard, and an even softer thud as he rests his head against the door that separates you.
“I feel.. Better. You were right, about the eyes closed thing.”
A smile graces your lips and you let your head fall back, too. You can’t help but wonder if it’s in the same space as his. So close, yet so far.
“How’s your wine?” He wonders, and you can hear the bit of humor in his voice.
He’s heard both of the times you picked up and set down the bottle, and you’re sure he can tell you’re about to be ready for a third.
You giggle, the sound involuntary as the wine has now loosened up your shyness. “It’s good. Think I’ll have some more.”
Another glass is poured, and you can hear him set his second can on the ground with a soft clang.
“Do ya maybe wanna play the question game?” He wonders, which makes a grin return to your face.
“You mean how we did one of the first times we talked?”
He chuckles and you hear a third beer can being opened.
“Yeah, I guess.. But that was 20 questions.. There’s never enough questions.”
“So unlimited questions, then?” You feel the need to clarify with a laugh.
“Well, sort of.. Until I have to leave.. And then we can pick up where we left off at our next date.” He stops, seeming to realize what he’s implied. “I-I mean that is.. If you even want there to be a second date..”
You find yourself wishing you could see his face when you give him your answer, “Of course I want to have a second date with you, J.”
He’s silent, so you hope he’s grinning from ear to ear. You’ll never know, because he decides to begin the game.
“What are you wearing to our date?”
The next hour and a half that passes is full of questions, giggles and outright laughter. You slowly get him to relax more and more, and it almost seems as if the door between you is disappearing.
You feel closer to him than ever.
Humming softly to yourself, you swish the last sip of wine around the glass. It had started to ignite a warm buzz under your skin, making you feel calmer. A little braver too.
“Tell me your favorite and least favorite thing about yourself.”
You hear him laugh on the other side of the door.
“Like.. personality wise or looks wise?”
It’s your turn to giggle, “Both would be nice, but.. I meant about how you look.. you gotta give me something, you know. I’ve spent ages trying to imagine you.”
He chuckles again, and then you hear him exhale.
“Favorite? I think I have pretty nice eyes. They’re blue, by the way. Don’t know if I ever told you that.. and I guess I.. I have a pretty nice uh.. build?” You hear him take another sip of his drink before he continues, “I mean, I work out a lot.”
All you can think of is that he may or may not have killer abs and huge biceps to wrap around you to keep you close, and you’re well aware it’s more than just the wine causing such thoughts.
“My least favorite..?” It sounds like he needs clarification.
“You know..” you pause, “your biggest insecurity.. I’ll tell you mine.”
“Okay…” He hums, so softly it’s almost inaudible. “I um.. remember how I told you I was in the army?”
“Yeah, I remember.”
“I was in the field, and I um.. I had an accident..”
When he stops, you find your eyes growing wider and your spine going straight.
He continues.
“I…I fell from a freight car and..” He hisses, and you can tell he’s trying not to tell you everything, just to refrain from crying. “The doctor who found me said I had two choices.. lose my arm or my life, and.. he made the decision for me.”
There’s silence for a few moments before you speak. “So you..”
“I have a prosthetic, now. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very high tech and I can do anything any normal person can, but.. I still have a lot of scars. They’re not pretty to look at.”
You’re at a loss for something to say because all you want to do is hold him.
He’s not a mind reader, so he becomes even more unsure about his insecurity. “Does that.. bother you..? That I’m not.. whole?”
He almost spits out the last word, as if he expects you to be disgusted in him, as if he’s any less of a man for it.
“No.” Your response is immediate. “If anything, I.. I admire you more for what you’ve just told me.”
“You don’t think the scars will bother you?” There’s a sadness to his tone, and you try to comfort him with the knowledge of your insecurity.
“No, I.. I really don’t. I know it’s not the same, but.. my biggest insecurity would have to be my stretch marks..” you finish your wine in a quick gulp, hoping for a little more courage. “I um.. I’ve got them on my thighs, hips, chest, some on my belly.. I don’t know when I got them really or why I have so many, but I do.. I don’t even feel comfortable in a two piece bathing suit anymore..”
He sits in silence as you continue.
“They’re scars, you know.. I-I know it’s not from anything super traumatic and not even comparable to the awful things you went through, but..”
“I bet they’re beautiful. I bet you’re beautiful.”
The words are soft, you almost don’t hear him, but it’s enough to make your entire body blush and tears sting your eyes.
The only thing stopping the two of you from seeing each other was four inches of wood and knowing that you couldn’t just open the door crushed your heart.
“I’ll make you a deal, J..” You start, chewing the inside of your cheek as you contemplate whether you really should go through with your idea. This wine was going to get you in trouble.
“Yeah? What’s that, doll?”
“I’ll send you a photo of myself tomorrow.. If you send me one in return.”
He releases a loud exhale, and not being able to see his expression has you worried that it might not have been from excitement.
“Really? Fuck, I mean.. You have no idea how badly I want to see you.”
Another smile? You could get used to this.
“Yes, really. Do we have a deal?”
A moment passes before he gives you his final answer, “I believe we have a deal, Clair.”
Shuffling is heard on the other side of the door, followed by a signature sigh. “I should get goin, babe.. It’s pretty late.”
You nod, then realize he can’t see you. “Let me know when you make it home.”
You hear him stand up, so you do the same, setting your empty glass on the floor beside you.
Turning to face the door, you place your hand on the wood.
The barrier between you seemed greater than ever in that moment.
You can’t see him placing his hand in the exact same spot as yours.
So close.
Yet so far.
“I will.. I.. I’ll miss you.”
His confession makes your heart ache.
“I already miss you.”
“Bye, Clair.”
“See you soon, J.”

“Man, I really just bombed that exam,” Kaminari groaned, burying his face in his hands.
“It’s okay, Mina and Sero are probably going to join you in your failure,” you teased, earning yourself some glares from Sero and Mina. Kirishima laughed and you looked at him. “Don’t laugh too hard, Eijirou, you’re not that far ahead either!”
Kaminari, Sero, and Mina took their chances to make fun of Kirishima this time, the boys fooling around while Mina rolled her eyes. The sun was beginning to set as you and your friends waited outside of U.A. before walking back home.
“Where the hell is Katsuki?” You muttered.
Mina heard you over the sound of the boys arguing and put her arm on your shoulder. “Aw, look at you worrying about your boyfriend.”
She made kissy faces at you and you rolled your eyes, pushing her face away. “You know it’s not like that. He just seems down lately.”
Mina raised her brow. “Really? If I’m being honest, I haven’t really noticed. Then again, you’ve always been observant and see things I would never even think about noticing.”
You sighed, shrugging your shoulders as Kirishima waved at you and Mina. He showed you his phone, revealing messages between him and Bakugou. “Bakugou said that he’s going to see us tomorrow. Apparently he has to talk to a teacher about one of his assignments.”
“Alright, come on let’s go home,” Kaminari said as the group began walking away.
You stayed back. “I think I’m going to wait for him out here.”
“Are you sure? I can wait with you if you want,” Mina suggested.
You shook your head, smiling. “I just don’t want to leave him alone so I’m going to annoy him a little. I’ll see you guys tomorrow!”
The four of them waved good-bye to you as they walked away. You turned back around, leaning against the gates opening up to U.A. You had a feeling in your gut that was telling you to stay back and wait for Bakugou and low and behold, Bakugou came walking down the entrance. When he saw you, you could practically hear him groaning despite the amount of distance between the two of you.
As he came closer, you pointed your finger at him. “I knew it, you’re trying to avoid us!”
Bakugou rolled his eyes as he continued walking. You caught up to him, walking beside him. “Whatever. If you knew I was avoiding you shits, why’re you here?”
“‘Cause I’m worried about you,” you said truthfully.
Bakugou scoffed. “I’m not a kid, I don’t need you to fucking worry about me.”
“Just because you don’t need me to, doesn’t mean I’ll just stop.” You stood in front of him, causing him to stop walking. “You need to talk to someone about the Kamino incident.”
Bakugou’s eyes widened slightly before he gained his composure once more. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
This time it was your turn to roll your eyes. “There’s nothing wrong with feeling upset about what happened. No one blames you or thinks you’re in the wrong.”
There was a long pause before the corners of Bakugou’s lips turned upwards into a small smile. He placed his hand onto your shoulder as he walked forward. You stood dazed and confused before being able to recollect yourself and catch up with him.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m walking you home. It’s only been a few weeks since what happened to your mom and I’m still going to follow you around to make sure you’re not gonna do anything stupid.”
***
The walk was quiet, but it wasn’t awkward. Bakugou seemed to be deep in thought and you couldn’t help but study and observe Bakugou, attempting to decipher what was going on through his head. His hands were in his pockets and his lips were almost like they were permanently down turned. Once you got to your house, you could see your dad peeking through the window and sigh in relief once he saw you. Bakugou looked over there and looked back at you. “Your dad must’ve been worried about you. You need to take care of yourself for him.”
You sighed. “I know and I am taking care of myself now.”
Bakugou nodded, walking in the other direction to go to his own home. He lifted his hand to you to say goodbye. You stood in front of your driveway and called out to him. “Katsuki!”
Bakugou turned around and narrowed his brows at you. “For the last goddamn time, you’re the only one I know who calls me by my first name and I swear to god—“
You cut him off quickly, knowing he was going to continue rambling on. “I’m going to beat you.”
Bakugou was taken aback. “What?”
“I’m going to beat you and become the number one hero. I’m going to beat you, Midoriya, and Todoroki.” You paused. “You know what that means?”
“What?”
“It means that you’re still a hero to me. What happened in Kamino wasn’t your fault and that shouldn’t be a reason for you to want to stop pursuing your goal. You’re still the same hotheaded Bakugou Katsuki who is loud, driven, and the one who saved me a few weeks ago. You’re a hero, Katsuki.”
Bakugou’s eyes widened but he turned back around so you couldn’t see his expression. “Whatever. Go inside, your dad’s waiting.”
And after all this time, you always wonder what kind of expression he had on his face then.
***
Your eyes shot open and you sat up immediately in bed. You rubbed your eyes, groaning. It was a dream... But it also wasn’t. It genuinely happened and you can recall that day so easily despite how long ago it was.
The door in your room opened and Mina sighed in relief. “Thank god you’re awake, I thought I had to wake you up.”
She threw a few envelopes at you, indicating that it was some mail that you got. You went through them, most of them being bills. However, one of them was from a famous agency you had heard of. Many old heroes were signed under this agency and you immediately ripped open the seal.  The letter was addressed specifically to you.
Dear (H/N),
I hope you’ve been well and that this urgent letter reaches you. I’m going to get straight to the point; I know that you’re the number one hero and that you deserve to be involved in every important villain issue there is.
But, I don’t want you to interfere in any issue related to Ground Zero unless we need your help.
The reason for this is that I’m afraid your personal connection to him will make you biased and refrain you from stopping him if the chance that you meet him ever comes again in the future.
I know you’re a strong hero, which is why you’re number one, but my agency will take care of him if needed.
I understand that this is maybe unfair and I may be intruding, but I’m doing what is best for the world and for you. I’m asking you to step back, not forcing you to.
I hope you can trust me to do this.
—Hawks
You sighed, shoving the letter in your pockets and getting up to get ready. Once you were done, you checked your phone to get a text from Natsuya to stop by his place. You went into the kitchen as Mina set a plate of breakfast for you.
“You look worn out,” Mina commented, sitting down in front of you.
“I just have a feeling something’s going on.” You sighed, eating the food Mina made you. “I’m stopping by Natsuya’s before going to the agency today.”
“Okay.” Mina narrowed her brows in confusion at you but didn’t bother to question you further. “You’ve been at Yamashita’s place more than you’ve been here. Are you sure there isn’t something else going on?”
Mina nudged your arm and you swatted at her. “Absolutely not. I just want to hang out with my boyfriend. Sue me.” You got up to put your plate away, grabbing your coat from the rack in the process.
“But you’re hanging out with him at his apartment. Where his bed is.”
“I’m not going there for his ‘bed.’” You rolled your eyes at your best friend, bending down to tie your shoelaces.
“Hm, then again you don’t need a bed, you can have sex pretty much anywh—“
“Okay, see you later, Mina!” You exclaimed, quickly leaving the apartment only to hear Mina’s snickers as you left.
***
You knocked on the door, patiently waiting for your boyfriend to answer. Once he did, Natsuya’s face broke out into a smile as he was genuinely happy to see his girlfriend.
“Hey, you,” he said, kissing your forehead as he opened the door wider to let you in.
You smiled, walking in and he closed the door. “Why’d you call me here?”
“What? A man can’t see his girlfriend or is that a crime?” Natsuya joked and you playfully rolled your eyes at him. “I just wanted to check up on you before you and I headed out for work. I have a feeling that everything is going to escalate from here, especially since the League hasn’t done anything and it’s been three weeks now.”
You plopped down onto his sofa, letting out a loud sigh. It was evident that something was bound to happen and lately, it felt as if you were just sitting back and waiting for something to happen. It didn’t sit well with you that you couldn’t really do anything during this time. But there wasn’t anything that you could do, for now at least.
“You’re right, which is why I’m glad you called me over. I need to show you something.” Natsuya sat down beside you as you pulled out the letter from Hawks from your pocket. You handed it over to him, allowing him to read it over briefly. “What do you think about it?”
“If you want my honest opinion, I’m happy you’re not involved with all of this anymore,” Natsuya said, earning a sigh from you. You knew how he would react but nevertheless you wanted to see for yourself what he would say. Natsuya chuckled at your expression. “Don’t give me that look. You get reckless when anything Ground Zero related is called and it’s because you’re biased. Otherwise, you’re a great hero. But I’m glad Hawks stepped in and is taking care of this.”
You groaned. “I know but I’m still worried. What if I can help but it’s too late or if someone gets hurt instead of me?”
Natsuya wrapped an arm around you, rubbing your shoulders. “Y/N, Hawks is an amazing hero. He was number two back when we were still in high school and he’s still strong. Have some more trust in him, I’m sure he’ll have everything under control.”
You nodded, knowing that he was right. You felt guilty for not being able to decide to deal with Bakugou by trying desperately to understand that he’s not a villain and by trying to reprimand him because of his villainous actions. Natsuya sighed, kissing your head. “Don’t beat yourself up over this. I know you want to help but you don’t have to save every single person in the whole world. You’re not the only hero here. There are so many heroes, your colleagues, who are here for you and will support you.”
You nodded once more, wrapping your arms around his torso. “I know. Thanks, Tsuya.”
“Well, as much as I’d love to stay here like this, we’ve still got to go to work.” He patted your back as he got up, extending his hand out for you. You took it and he pulled you up, the two of you leaving to go to your respective jobs.
***
“It’s finally over!” Jirou cheered loudly, raising her arms into the air.
You sighed, rubbing the sweat from your forehead. You were asked to patrol areas that were considered “critical areas” that were most likely going to be attacked by the League by the Hero Public Safety Commission, the center that is run my non-heroes and it is involved in investigating the most criminally dangerous cases. Jirou was also in the area so she decided to tag along and help you out, just in case there was a scenario in which the League actually did attack.
“Are you headed home?” You asked.
Jirou nodded, stretching her arms out. “Yeah, this has been one of the longest days of my life. I’ve never felt so worked up. The League really needs to be stopped.” You nodded in agreement.
The two of you made your way back to the Commission Center, having to send in reports of what you had seen and the areas that you patrolled. The two of you waved to passerby’s, especially to the children who were ecstatic to have run into two major pros. Your phone rang in your pocket, continuing to vibrate uncontrollably as you fished it out. It was from the police station.
“Hello?”
“Y/N?” A female voice asked from the other line. “This is Tsubaki from the station. Yamashita’s really busy right now but he wanted to make sure to make me tell you that you need to get to the Commission Center immediately.”
You began to worry. “Yes, I’m on my way now. Did something happen?”
“It’s awful, please hurry. Bring as many people as you can, I don’t know how much is left of it.” Tsubaki hung up.
Jirou read your facial expression. “That doesn’t look good.”
“We have to get to the Commission Center now!” You exclaimed, shoving your phone back in your pocket. You began running towards the Center, Jirou following suit. “Something’s going on there, and we have to check it out. Call as many pros as you can, I’ll do the same.” Jirou wearily nodded, wanting to know what’s going on just as much as you want to.
Dear god please let everything be okay…
***
The bar was quieter than usual, only the bartender keeping Bakugou company. But he liked it that way, finding the crowds of people who usually come to be intrusive and bothersome. Thankfully there weren’t any women trying to hit on him like most nights as they try and become the girlfriend of the most wanted man alive.
“Man, you didn’t have to yell at everyone to leave like that. You know it’s bad for my business,” the bartender, Watari, complained.
Bakugou rolled his eyes, setting his glass down on the table. “Oh, please, I’ll pay you triple my fee if you quit your bitching.”
Watari laughed, being used to his number one customer’s prickly attitude after the years he’s spent with Bakugou. Watari was the only man Bakugou fully trusted, someone he turned to when he was asked to abandon his family, friends, and his old life. Watari was also the only one who’s aware of Bakugou’s true identity, understanding that he had to become a villain to help out the pros.
Watari studied Bakugou, the now grown man that he saw as his own son. He set down the glass he was wiping. “You know every time I look at you I keep seeing that hopeless kid that came to me all those years ago.”
Bakugou scoffed. “Tch, I wasn’t hopeless. And I didn’t come to you, you saw me and came to me.”
“Yeah, ‘cause I’ve never seen a kid with such a defeated look in his eye.” Watari chuckled at the memory, running a hand threw his gray hair. “I know the pros are the good guys, and I do trust them. I’ll just never understand what they were thinking asking a child to give up his dreams and his friends and family to help them out.”
“It’s not like they fucking forced me, I agreed to it, you know.”
“I know but I can’t stop thinking about that look on your face. You had to say goodbye to your classmates, to your dream of becoming the number one hero. Hell, if you ask me, you basically handed your dream over to (H/N) without any fight at all! And don’t get me started on you having to abandon your parents, your mother was pissed when you just disappeared all of a sudden.”
Bakugou’s lips turned upward, staring down at his glass as he reminisced with Watari. “That old hag was ready to fucking kill me, calling radio stations and news channels to find me. Must of surprised her when three years later her only son ‘murdered’ the leader of the League to become the leader himself.”
Watari laughed, shaking his head as he recalled the numerous amount of times he saw Bakugou Mitsuki stampeding through the streets to find her son. “You think you’ll ever talk to her? Once you’re done being the bad guy and can go back to your normal life?”
Bakugou sighed, leaning back on the table and staring at the ceiling. “That’s the thing, Pops, I don’t think I can go back. Not to the old hag, to my friends, to being a hero. I haven’t heard from my folks in fucking years, but I don’t blame them since they don’t know the truth. The minute I accepted this job, I knew that I wouldn’t be treated as a kid pursuing heroism like I was before. I’ve been in this shit for over seven years now, no one’s gonna accept me with open arms like that.”
“You’re wrong.” Bakugou turned his head to face him, confused. Watari smiled. “(H/N) would accept you. She’s been accepting you for all these years and she hasn’t been quiet about it either. Also, don’t forget that you have me, kid.”
Bakugou smirked as Watari patted him on the shoulder. “Yeah, it seems like you and that shitty girl are the only ones who believe in me.”
Bakugou turned his head back to the ceiling, closing his eyes and taking a breath in. He stills remembers being a broken down mess, agonizing over the decision he had made. Although he didn’t regret the decision he made, the initial reaction to being given the offer by Hawks was one that he could never forget. He was a high schooler, a teenager, a kid being asked to work with adults to help them out. He was a kid asked to become a double agent and he had to sacrifice everything for it, too. But he didn’t regret it. The minute he got abducted by the League during the Kamino incident, he knew he wasn’t the same fifteen-year-old U.A. student anymore. No matter how many times anyone told him otherwise, Bakugou couldn’t help but blame himself for the incident. And no matter how hard he tried to conceal how he was actually feeling, mostly everyone bought his act, believing that he was fine, believing that he was a tough kid that could put up with the aftermath of the incident.
That is, everyone except you. You saw straight through him and didn’t hesitate to call him out on his bullshit either.
As much as he had missed seeing his friends and his parents, he couldn’t describe the loneliness he felt when he realized he wouldn’t have the shitty girl who he saved from the rooftop of U.A. High nagging him everywhere he went. He couldn’t describe the feeling inside of him when he first saw your face after ten years those few weeks ago in that flower shop. He couldn’t describe the relief he felt when he heard you spew out your drunken yet supportive words for him. You always believed in him, you always cheered for him, and here you were ten years later continuing to believe in him.
Bakugou opened his eyes, shaking his head. It happened again; he couldn’t stop thinking about you.
His fingers subconsciously, like it was practice now, typed your name in the internet browser on his phone. He looked at the images that popped up with the search result. He internally wanted to puke at the picture of you beside your shitty police boyfriend on the day you were announced as the number one hero. What a fucking tool…
“Katsuki.” Watari broke Bakugou away from his thoughts. “Turn the volume up.”
Bakugou looked over to what he was looking at, getting concerned over the news reporter covering what was read as “BREAKING NEWS.” He turned the volume up.
“This is breaking news and I’m coming to you live from the Hero Public Safety Commission. As you can see, the building is completely burnt down, exploded from the inside. Police have been investigating all night, concluding that the explosions from the inside were not caused by notoriously wanted criminal, Ground Zero,” the woman on the screen said to the camera.
Bakugou stood up from his seat, his eyes widening. He had no idea what was going on. “What the fuck?”
“Officials have confirmed that the villain known as Kurogiri was involved in the attack. However, as he is a part of the League of Villains, he does not have a fire type quirk that would cause such an explosion. Officials have also confirmed that there was another figure involved in this atrocious attack, concluding that it was not villains Ground Zero or Dabi.
“To make matters even worse, the only pro hero that was able to get to the scene before all of this unfolded was Hawks. Kurogiri and the second individual involved managed to hurt Hawks so badly that he is currently critically injured and is in intensive care. Officials have confirmed that they do not know when or even if Hawks will be able to recover from this—“
Watari turned the television off, looking over at Bakugou who was absolutely furious over the events. Kurogiri had worked independently, taking orders from someone else, most likely the true leader of the League, and had hurt Bakugou’s actual boss. “Katsuki… Don’t do anything irrational.”
Bakugou grabbed his coat, slamming the bar door open. “I’m gonna kill that Warp Gate fucker.”

17 - I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. || wrongfully accused. ||
-----------------------------------------------------
Back at Henrik’s, Marvin remains by Jackie’s bedside. He knows he should go rest and care for himself, but he can’t resist. He runs a thumb down Jackie’s cheek, taking note of his sleeping for. Jackie still hadn’t woken up properly yet, but according to Henrik, he’d stirred briefly, and was still steadily improving. He didn’t need an oxygen mask anymore, he didn’t need to be hooked up to several machines anymore, it seems as if Jackie is finally going to recover wholly. Marvin can tell that Jackie’s own healing is finally kicking in, as well.
He glances up when he hears footsteps shuffle in. He stiffens when he sees it’s Amon, but Marvin refuses to get up. “He’s okay, Amon, I’ve got him.”
“I know. I heard from Henrik and Chase. You could have told me too, you know. Considering I was just as concerned for him.”
“You’ve been giving me the silent treatment for several days, I didn’t think I’d get through to you. I have no reason to talk to you now. Now go away and let me spend time with my husband.”
“The one you abandoned, you mean,” Amon quips.
Marvin flinches. “Can we not do this in here? I don’t want Jackie to wake up to an argument.”
“Okay, so let’s go upstairs then, because I have a lot I’m finally ready to say to you.” Amon’s voice goes flat. “You do not get to tell me no, you have a lot to answer for.”
Marvin says nothing in response. He knows Amon is right, they need to have this conversation. Marvin didn’t think he’d feel so sick all over again. With a quiet sigh, he bends over to give Jackie a small forehead kiss, whispering a promise he’ll come back soon. Jackie murmurs quietly in his sleep, twitching once before going still. With that, Marvin gets up and follows Amon out of the lab and back up into the living room. The only other occupant is Erin, who’s playing on his phone.
“Can you go outside for a bit?” Amon asks politely. “Your dad and I need to talk.”
“This…” Erin starts to argue. He glances up when he sees the expressions on both their faces. “I just remembered I wanted to go see Jackie too, so. You know what? Bye.” He gets up and zooms out of the room in a hurry.
The two men watch him leave before turning back to face each other. “Okay,” Amon says. “Talk to me. Tell me how exactly you didn’t abandon Jackie because from where I’m standing, it’s pretty damning.”
“I had no choice!” Marvin snarls, losing his temper. “I was backed into a corner, okay?”
“No choice? Damn it Marvin, this was Jackie! I’m have a really hard time not blaming you for his current condition. You have fucking magic, you could have slowed down time to grab Jackie and run. Instead you fled like a coward!”
“You’re always going to worry about Jackie, aren’t you?” Marvin blurts. It’s inappropriate, he knows. It’s a pointless deterrent from the main conversation, it’s his own jealousy coming out. Is he even jealous of their friendship? He doesn’t know anymore. “I was held prisoner too.”
Amon storms forward, grabbing at Marvin’s wrists. He turns them over, looking at the healing bruises that still remain. “Yes, I can see that. Bruised wrists, chained to the wall, what a tragedy. So sad, definitely more important that your fucking husband who is in a coma from being tortured. You have no fucking shame, Marvin. Then you have to fucking nerve to throw this back in my face like somehow this is a ‘me’ problem.”
“You’d have done the same in my shoes! I made a split second decision to get help, and look, I found you and Chase! You can’t tell me I completely messed up.”
“I never would have left Jackie.”
“You weren’t in my shoes, Amon! You’re sitting there on some high and mighty throne, acting like you would have been all sacrificing for Jackie’s sake. You don’t think I hate myself over what happened? Of course I blame myself! Of course I’m aware Jackie’s upset with me, I’m aware you’re pissed! You fled a scene too when you needed help, when you have your own set of powers to easily defend yourself with. I would give anything for Jackie, and I am.”
“I want you to hate yourself. You deserve to feel guilty, you know why? Because Jackie’s in a coma. He could have avoided meeting Merlin at all had you thought just a little bit harder over your actions. What if Jackie had died? What if-”
“What if, what fucking if,” Marvin snaps. “You’re not married to Jackie, I am. I’ve been beating myself up for days over this, agonizing over your stupid potshots against me, feeling like the most worthless human alive every time I look at my husband! I get you would do everything for Jackie, hooray for you! Get over yourself, acknowledge Jackie has a new life that doesn’t always revolve around you, and let other people love him for once.”
Amon stares for a long minute. “I don’t expect Jackie’s life to revolve around me. I’m well aware he lives a different life now. I just want…”
“So back off me! Yes, I left him. I left to find help, and we all saved him. You kicked ass, Amon. You were there when I needed you, so drop this self righteous act and forgive me. I’m sorry, okay? I’m sorry I left Jackie, I’m sorry every day that I left him in Jason’s hands. I’m always going to blame myself even without your judgement, so just. Back off. I already know.”
“I guess I got a little...carried away,” Amon relents. “I was so focused on Jackie’s condition, I never stopped to ask how you were doing.”
“I’m aware.” Marvin’s voice is short. “I’m traumatized, even though you didn’t ask. Watching Jason torture, poision, and kick Jackie around for two days is not my idea of fun. I close my eyes and wonder if Jackie would have died if not for Henrik. Would he have died if I wasn’t able to find help? Would he have died even if I had taken him with me, miraculously?”
“Marvin…”
“I’m furious, Amon. I’m angry and heartbroken. Because of everything I went through, the most scarring moment was hearing Jackie whisper that he doesn’t trust me anymore. I can take your pot shots, I can take your judgement, I can take everyone hating me for getting myself out of there. Jackie’s opinion is the only one who matters, and he lost his trust in me. That kills me.” He wipes his eyes, turning away. “I want to go sit by my husband’s bedside and watch over him before Henrik wakes up. If you’re done yelling at me, then I’m-”
His phone rings then, and he pulls it out of his pocket with a frown. Is Jackie calling him? No, Jackie’s asleep in the lab without a phone, Erin with him. Confused, Marvin answers. “Hello?”
“Oh, good. Marvin, it’s Vin.”
Marvin blinks as he turns his gaze back toward Amon. “Vin, why are…?”
“I’m at your apartment. Sorry for crash landing in there, but I needed to portal myself somewhere with a special someone. Where are you right now? No one’s here and I only found Jackie’s cell phone.”
“We’re at Henrik’s.” Marvin turns away to ignore Amon’s frantic gesturing. He can still hear the entity slapping at the walls, probably testing for potential portal openings. “We’re all here.”
“Okay, describe the room you’re in. Can we safely portal in?”
Marvin’s anger is fading, replaced now with a burning curiosity over who Vin is with. Last he’d heard, Vin had been Cian’s prisoner and now he’s in Marvin’s apartment? Marvin turns back around to face Amon, who’s gesturing toward one blank wall, behind the couch. “We’re in the living room,” he begins. “There’s a couch in front of a blank wall, you can portal through it.”
“Describe the room in more detail, I need to be able to see into your head.”
“How can you do that over the phone?”
“I don’t know, I just need to picture it.”
Marvin rolls his eyes, but begins describing the living room, with as many details he can give. He barely finishes his last sentence when a bright green circle of fire appears on the wall. Both Marvin and Amon scramble back just in time for two figures to tumble through, one more gracefully than the other.
Vin is still on his feet, moving closer to Marvin to hand Jackie’s phone over. “Sorry for taking that, but I needed to call someone and you’re in his favorites.” He steps back and grabs at the second figure roughly, hauling her to her feet. “Also, we need a place to store her. I would very much like to keep her with us for a while.”
Marvin blinks, before turning to stare at Amon. Amon is staring at her with blackened eyes, looking ready to lunge at any second. He turns back to Vin, then the woman in his grasp. She, of course, is screaming and swearing angrily, thrashing in an attempt to pull herself free. Her shortened height against Vin would be hilarious in any other situation.
“Certainly,” Marvin finally says, adopting a charming grin. “Welcome to our clan, Danielle, we’re happy to have you.”
“Oh fuck off,” she snaps. “Get this lunatic away from me! Did you know he pushed me out a god damned window?”
“Oh, don’t mind her,” Vin laughs. “She’s a jokester. Now, a place?”
Marvin sighs. “I’ll go get Jameson.” He turns and leaves the room, figuring if she was trapped with Vin and Amon both, there’s nowhere she can run to.
