MONSTER HIGH G3 IS NOT AS INCLUSIVE AS MONSTER HIGH G1

EDIT: THIS IS JUST A RANT, DON'T TAKE IT SO SERIOUSLY LOL

Maybe that sounds crazy. Maybe it's been said a million times. Anyway, I'm just ranting about my 3 am thoughts.

I know in G3 we have non-binary Frankie (who also has a prosthetic leg), and the Draculaura doll is more curvy. But as far as I'm concerned, they took everything else that made Monster High inclusive.

For starters, and I know it was never actually confirmed, but still, Clawdeen is lesbian (bisexual at best). Once again, it was never confirmed, but in my opinion is a theory popular enough for the Monster High management to hear about it.

If they really wanted to make it more inclusive, why did they not confirm Clawdeen sexuality and give her a female romantic interest?

No, they had to break up one of their best couples. This leads me to my next point, what the fuck are Cleo and Deuce doing being separated?

The first G1 dolls literally came as a package. If you got one, you got the other. That's how much of an obvious couple they were. And not only that, in the Boo York movie, they broke up for like five minutes before realizing they didn't want to be without each other.

Which, in my opinion, it's so fucking cute because they come from completely different worlds. Cleo is royalty, Deuce is just a normal guy. Cleo is a little too superficial, and Deuce looks like he never showers. But they love each other and that's enough.

And you know who else loved each other and that was enough? Clawd and Draculaura. What do you even mean with "Clawd likes Cleo"? That man was in love with Draculaura, that man would've done anything for her, and you're telling me they also broke them apart?

Especially since they made Draculaura curvy, it would've been beautiful to see them together. Because it would've been a great plot point to have jock, almost-bully Clawd evolve into falling in love with curvy, smart, witchy Draculaura. But no, they just separated them.

On a completely different note. What the fuck is Gil doing without his tank? Do I even have to explain why this is taking inclusivity out of the Monster High concept? He couldn't live without his tank outside the water. Ergo, he was limited without his tank. If you ask me, this is Monster High equivalent to something like hearing aids (and this is just an example, there are many other things you could compare Gil's tank to)

Also, Ghoulia talking bothers me a lot. First of all, she was the smartest of the group, but we couldn't understand what she was saying, which added a lot of comedy since us, the spectators, were only pretending to know what the fuck Ghoulia's plan was. And I repeat, she was the smartest of the group.

The smartest of the group couldn't communicate like everyone else. I won't even explain why that is fascinating in itself, because it just is and it added so much depth to whole story. And to add more to my problem with G3 Ghoulia, why is she standing straight and walking at a regular speed?

Ghoulia standing like a zombie was, again, to me, a form of inclusivity to all the kids out there who had some walking impediment, or, in general, had any chronic illness that stopped them from moving around. And her walking slow as fuck was just straight-up funny (especially that one web episode where she got a motorcycle).

There's a lot of things I do like about G3, as I think it improves the brand in wonderful ways, but they definitely took some of the most essential things that made Monster High what it was.

Hello! I recently found your account, and I went on scrolling down and down...and now I hope you know how grateful I am. Thank u- Merci. About 90% of the content you share here has made me feel so much better. I realllyy hope wonderful things happen for you. I've been a fan of hp since 2001, but I'm not really a social media person so I haven't been active in the fandom. I had no idea what was happening here until recently..two months ago to be exact (other details are not important) and omg.. I ended up in a discussion with some I think, new fans. tbh I thought, "Great! I'm good at this, I read all the books more than once Let's talk :)"  and omg their very first question was "What do you think about Regulus?"

I was like, "Who?" *dying from secondhand embarrassment bc It turns out I'm not that good at this

but as the discussion continued, I became more and more baffled bc "Why was everyone talking about Barty, Evan, and Regulus? who is daddy Remu? and what do you mean people ship James Potter with R.A.B.? What?"

I swear for a moment I thought "Did the writer publish a new book? Did I miss something? " tbh, I respect everyone's opinion it's none of my business but I'm still shocked. The only thing that bothers me is everything that happened with this new Wolfsar

omg, for most fans around my age (or at least people I know), Sirius was the complete portrayal of a bad boy- a rebel, with boots, tattoos, a leather jacket, and a fucking motorcycle. so this new Sirius is like a stranger to me, and that's okay. Mein issue is kinda with this new Remus T T my beloved .

They (the fans I was talking with) told me Remus is "tall, so handsome, SO strong, and hot-headed person because,  yk he's a werewolf." I was like "hot headed? excuse me?" I tried to explain to them that Remus being a werewolf is a metaphor for illnesses like HIV, it's not some superpowery gift.  they didn't believe me, but then they literally looked me in the face and said, "Then why would Sirius like someone like him? He's poor, short, and ugly." I swear I wanted to cry right then and there.

What is this mindset that makes some people think that a person should be, Idk, hot and flawless to deserve to be loved? Yes I don't think Remus is tall and super hot and perfect and isn't it fine? and I am 100% sure he's so beautiful. not like Sirius ofc but he has this "warm, cozy, and soft" sort of beauty. and I don't think he was a coward (ok maybe he was a liitle) but I guess it's easier for us, humans, to take the worst or weakest moment of a character and amplify it until it defines them entirely. and omg I'm so sorry for my rant and my bad english. but once again thank you for your beautiful soul <3 thank you

Hi anon! I, too, am baffled by the recent obsession with Regulus in this fandom. I think Jegulus is fine as a crack ship, but it has become so mainstream that many fans have just gone ahead and canonized it to the point that you'll be vilified for not accepting it as canon. I underestimated how popular the "best friend's brother" trope was, apparently. I also think it appeals to many fans as a Marauders Era version of one of the most popular ships of all time, Drarry.

This new version of Wolfstar is my biggest complaint with today's fandom, too! I get that the Marauders have very limited canon information and therefore we have more creative freedom to flesh them out, but I really believe that it has gone way too far. Sirius and Remus in today's fandom don't bear any resemblance to the characters they're based on. Remus is just a generic alpha werewolf OC and Sirius is his generic himbo femboy love interest OC. They don't even share a physical description with their Canon counterparts, and their personalities and character traits are so far removed that I can't even fathom how we reached this point as a fandom. How can you claim to like these characters if you have to change everything the source material says about them?

You're English is great, by the way! I completely agree that Remus has a cozy-and-warm sort of beauty. He made a point to distance himself from the stigma surrounding Lycanthropy because it was the focal point of his shame and self-loathing. And I just adore Wolfstar's dynamic from this lens, with the intimidatingly beautiful, confident, headstrong Sirius Black, who could have his pick of anyone he wants, choosing this ordinary guy because he's cozy and soft and it's exactly what Sirius wants after surviving the harsh ideals and abuse of House Black.

And coincidentally you just opened his stream, you immediately sent 'oh wow.' making the Sorcerer laugh at your reaction in chat.

i thought i wouldn't end up making one of those sappy posts before the end of 2023 but here we are i guess

what i wanna say in advance is a huge thank you, and that i'm sorry

this year has been a nightmare for me and i can't stress that word enough. i won't get into details, if you follow me you may have seen some occassional rant posts. long story short though, i'm ending 2023 being mentally exhausted af and even though i'm not in my most optimistic mood, i hope 2024 will not as shitty as 2023

as of my tumblr presence, there have been some changes. i jumped from one fandom to another without completely leaving the bc fandom. i'm just not that much in the mood anymore. maybe this will change once the new album is out? we'll see 👀 and jumping to another fandom means that i lost contact with so many people from the bc fandom. i promise you i didn't do this on purpose and i don't hate or stopped liking any of you. it just... things got weird and a bit too much in my head and now idk how to keep contact without looking extremely weird in this fandom

anyway! entering another fandom has been weird not only in means of interests but also in means of communication. ever since i remember my tumblr activity in any fandom, i always tried to interact as much as possible with other accounts and talk with people, whether that was via posts or messages. in the jo fandom i feel like i have kinda failed that

i'm aware that i post a lot and i'm probably everywhere with the content updates and the gifs. and that may be annoying to some people. and i understand it, i don't like it but i understand it and i wanna apologise for being... all over the place yet not really reaching out to anyone in the fandom or building any kind of online friendship

idk if there's an accurate explanation for the way i feel about this so i'll put it in the best words possible: i wanna make jokes and have fun in here and exchange random messages or mentions in posts and talk shit or not about jo etc, but i feel like my social anxiety (both online and offline) has passed any limit i had put to it until now that i end up thinking it's actually wrong to interact with anyone in this fandom. because everyone has already connected with some people and have built a specific line of interests and you all seem so fucking cool for someone who is as insecure and scared to talk as me so i end up hiding behind my gifs, shitposts and content updates in hopes that people will like me or at least aknowledge i exist in this fandom. and again, that's all on me, there's no one to blame for this behaviour but me and my fucked up mind (which got even more fucked up in the past year). so idk, i feel like i wanna apologise for this, for being like that

however, no matter the anxiety, i must admit that the jo tumblr fandom was actually my escape when things in real life got bad bad. i've spent hours scrolling through the jo and kaarija hashtags in hopes of seeing something unhinged and funny to lift my mood and you know what? i found something every single time. and that was more than nice. if it wasn't for all of you being as funny and crazy (in a positive way) as you are, i'd feel even worse. but every time i open the jo hashtag there's someone posting a wholesome thing or saying something unhinged like how many ways has Kris listed to kill Bojan in his sleep lmao

anyway i ended up writing a lot, this could easily be an entry to the journal that i don't keep but maybe should start keeping. if you read until this point, congratulations for going through all this ramble and i'm sorry

hope 2024 is gonna be a lot different than 2023 but in a good way this time. and i hope i get better and actually get to interact more with all of you great people 💕 and obviously i hope you all have a fantastic year ahead of you 💖

Back with another question hehe. brace for ramble.

so. i was reading about povs and narrative styles and what not, and the person had to mention, of course, that of Virginia Woolf where she manages to jump from the stream of consciousness of one character to another expertly without missing a beat.

The person went on to subjectively add that that style isn't for everyone and best avoided unless you've mastered the craft (do you agree? why why not?)

But that's not the question. My concern is that i may have done this in one of my WIPs. but here's the thing, i assumed what i was doing was omniscient narrarion (i remember it as following the streams and thoughts of ur characters and being all-knowing kinda) but according to the same thing I read, the person claimed that with omniscient narration, while u do move freely, u are sticking to/favoring one character more than others, because too free a movement will confuse your readers. (what's ur two cents on that too)

I realize as I type this that I might need to share an excerpt of the WIP for you to actually see where the pov/style falls exactly (is it truly omniscient, or am I failing at being another Virginia (who I recall in Mrs. Dalloway for instance, she only followed the consciousness of like 3 people), or is my work utterly hard and confusing to follow?)

I think that might've been my post, because that all sounds eerily familiar hahaha

One thing to remember with Woolf is that not everyone is a fan of her style. By all the formal metrics with which we judge prose, she's an incredible writer, but that doesn't mean everyone has to like her stuff. Her prose is thick, and the frequent POV shifts (so many shifts that the novel feels liquid where others feel solid) is inherently confusing. Woolf gets away with it because she has damn good reasons for employing it (highlighting the liquidity of institutions and individual identity under modernism; showing how each person is inherently a collection of the people around them, and there's very little, if anything, immutable about a person; etc.), and her prose is so mind-bogglingly gorgeous that she convinces the reader to stay with her through the POV shifts. Once you really get into Woolf, these shifts become part of her delight, but for a lot of people, this liquidity in narration erodes their enjoyment of her novels, and they put them down (which is fair, though sad). When I said writers should probably avoid writing like that unless they've mastered the craft, I meant that the average writer isn't nearly strong enough in the craft of prose to get people to read something with Woolfian POV shifts, and that the average writer probably doesn't know how to even write those shifts. (This includes me. I tried to write in a truly Woolfian POV style, and it was awful. Third person limited for me!)

I definitely can't gauge your writing without seeing it, but I would say as a blanket statement not to worry too much. I don't know if it's possible to accidentally write the POV Woolf writes with haha, and if your story has a main character/protagonist, that character is probably your central viewpoint character, whether you know it or not. Your story might be confusing to follow, but that isn't inherently a negative. If the prose is strong enough, readers will put in the extra muscle to understand the story (think of all the To the Lighthouses, Infinite Jests, and In Search of Lost Times out there, books known for being daunting but beloved). If you're still worried, though, there's nothing wrong with revising until you're happy with your POV. Just know that nothing is ever inherently wrong in writing, and you can make anything work if you grease the prose's wheels.

I'm so glad you're back! I was afraid something bad happened and I'm relieved to find out that it wasn't the case. A few months have passed since the release of TOTK, so the hype has went down and now I would like to read your opinion of the game. What are your favorite parts about it, what are the things you disliked and how would you rank this game with the rest of the 3D Zelda games?

Aw, thank you! Yeah, I'm sorry I post so infrequently. I'm hoping that will change once I start working on the Fortitude revision again. Finishing Forgotten has been such an uphill project for me. But I'll be so glad I didn't leave it unfinished.

My thoughts and opinions about TotK are below (emphasis on my opinions--I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and that's ok!).

Three things I enjoyed:

THE MUSIC. The soundtrack is amazing, especially the growing dynamics as you progress in certain areas. It has a psychological effect, and I found it really intense in the best way.

THE TEMPLES. I was very happy to see a return to more traditional Zelda dungeons. WAY more fun than the divine beasts, and I liked having the sages assist! Gave me TWW vibes.

Better NPCs and sidequests. Maybe it's just me, but it felt like the Zelda team put some extra love into creating the NPCs and all the quests that come with them. I've had more fun with them than I did in BotW - which had way too many simple fetch quests.

Three things that didn't do much for me:

The Zonai tech. It's fun to use, and I do appreciate how utterly amazing the development/coding is, especially considering the Switch's hardware limitations. However, I would be very tired of Ultrahand by now if not for the Autobuild ability, and even then my interest is mild at best. Also, it did not feel "Zelda-ish" to me. I don't think driving cars or shooting rockets belongs in a Zelda game. In fact I ignored the Zonai tech whenever possible. I would often walk instead of building a car, simply because it felt more "Zelda-ish" to do so.

Mediocre voice acting. I'm relieved to say Ganondorf was fairly good. The rest not so much. If Nintendo isn't willing to hire more expensive more esteemed VAs for a flagship franchise like Zelda, I'd rather they didn't do it at all.

Zelda's story. Don't get me wrong, I was very glad to see her play a stronger, amazingly brave and selfless character. The thing I'm not happy about is that she was once again separated from Link throughout the entire game. Is it really too much to ask that they work together side by side? *sigh*

Three things I strongly disliked: (warning: ranting ahead)

EMOTIONLESS LINK. I cannot express how much I hate this. Even if I put aside my love for Link as a character and my wish for him to express himself, I still think this blank-faced avatar approach is awful. It does not allow me to see myself as Link (which I believe was their intent) because I have feelings and he doesn't, seemingly. If anything, it had the opposite effect. I found It distracting and cringey and infuriating to watch Link react to everything with determination, confusion, or that stupid blank expression. There are some emotionally charged scenes in this game, and they fall very flat because of Link. At least, they did for me. UGH.

Non-linear storytelling. It's highly restrictive, disjointed, and the impact depends on the order in which players obtain certain cutscenes. Please, Nintendo, no more.

The Zonai. I'm not a fan of most furry character designs, and Rauru is particularly strange, so it was immediately off-putting to me. I also strongly dislike the idea of them founding Hyrule and being "like gods" to Hylians. It's all very vague, and I don't understand how any of it works with past Zelda lore, especially when Hylia is so important in BotW. It's like they scrapped everything sacred in Zelda lore (the golden goddesses, Hylia, etc.), and replaced it with the Zonai. Meh, I'll stick with the old lore, thanks.

Also, a furry being married to a Hylian is also very off-putting to me. I don't know how that works, I don't want to find out, and I have no interest in learning more about Rauru or Sonia. Their fates had zero emotional impact on me, so I didn't get much out of that part of the storyline.

I could go on, but I'll stop there.

As far as rankings, I would place TotK with BotW because they are very similar. Here's how I rank the 3D Zelda games:

So yeah, didn't love it, didn't hate it. Like with BotW, I'm very frustrated by all the untapped potential. As an avid Zelinker, I see the entire arc of BotW and TotK as an epic story of love, loss, bravery, and sacrifice. Link and Zelda both mirror and complement each other in so many ways, and I love the creative potential in that.

I also love the limitless exploration in both games - it keeps me interested for hours. But when the next Zelda game is revealed, I'd like to see a new formula, preferably a more classic one.

Whenever Jay sounded this excited about something, I knew I didn't stand a chance. Resistance was futile, so I nodded and we went on our way.

Strangely, Jay was dragging me towards the women's section of the department store, while I was trying to steer him towards the men's section.

"Wow, look! Isn't this a nice dress?" He asked, holding up a yellow dress that was definitely much too short for my liking.

"When did you start cross-dressing?" I joked in hopes of confusing him.

He ignored my comment and held the hanger in front of me. When I made a disgusted face, he quickly put it down.

"You're right. That's not your color! What about something like this then?" He said more to himself, holding up a pastel green babydoll.

"Not exactly your style, but I bet you can make it work!"

"I am! I thought you wanted me to come with you for advice! Had I known you'd be dragging me to the women's section, I would've stayed at home!"

Furious, I stomped off, remembering we had passed by an ice cream place on our way here.

Summer was my personal hell. Not because I couldn't stand the heat, or because I was constantly sweating. No, it was because of my body. My thighs to be more precise.

While everyone told me they were fine, I was always hellbent on hiding them. It worked out better in the colder months, but in the summer I was suffering because of the maxi dresses and long pants I made myself wear.

'Who the eff cares about if your thighs are a little thick?', my best friend would say. 'Nobody's perfect!'

But the thing was, Jay damn near was. How he decided to ask me out on a date when he was surrounded by much prettier girls, would forever remain a mystery to me. But he did. He chose me, and after a while I learned to overlook the nasty, jealous looks I got from those girls. Those with the perfect bodies, not an once of excess fat and thigh gaps. I long suspected that Jay knew about my insecurities, especially since I never let him touch my thighs when we were getting frisky. Anything below my waist was off-limits for his hands.

"Here you are! I've been looking for you!"

"Please! Where else would I be?" There was sarcasm in my voice and Jay sighed before he grabbed my hand and dragged me out and onto the parking lot.

"Where are we going? You didn't buy anything!" Suddenly I felt bad that my immature, insecure self ruined Jay's shopping trip.

"I don't need anything. I wanted to get you something though."

"What? One of those outfits? The only thing you could've gotten me in there were their giant plastic bags."

Jay knew not to cut in when I was going on and on in one of my many self-descructive rants. All he did was place his right hand on my thigh, as he steered through traffic with his left.

Damn, he looked hot doing it! How the hell am I dating that guy? I immediately stopped mid-sentence.

"I think you would look incredible in those outfits! I want to buy them for you! In fact, I'll come back here tomorrow and I will."

"I doubt I'd be wearing such clothes, you know m-"

He squeezed my thigh lightly, which made me shut up once again.

I’m just dumping all the WIP I’ll never finish for those interested. [Click here for my non-abandoned stories] ~*~ “He’s just so serious, you know? I bet all he thinks about is science and redstone. There is no place for romance in his life”, Iskall grumbled as he took another drink of his beer. They were just celebrating the opening of Sahara. Most of their friends had come to the party, but after an hour or so Doc had left, taking a slightly buzzed Scar right out of Iskall’s hand to go work at Area 77 with him.

“Every time – I tell you – every time I think I’m getting somewhere with Scar he is there and interrupts us with some important Alien stuff. And no offence, Grian, but the whole hippie thing made it even worse. He is constantly on edge.”

Grian just shrugged and took a small sip of his fruity cocktail. “None taken. I won’t stop the ‘Hippie thing’ though if that is what you want.”

“No, don’t worry. I just…” Iskall made an exasperated sound “It is so frustrating. If it weren’t for Doc I bet me and Scar would already be dating, you know?”

Grian just nodded. Once Iskall got into one of his rants it was better to just listen and not to try and stop him. He needed to get it out of his system and then they would be good for maybe another hour before it started all over again.

“I’m telling you if Doc just got laid, he’d be less of an annoyance. But that is just wishful thinking. I’d bet all my diamonds that he’ll never find a date. Not happening.”

Grian perked up at that. Well that was something new wasn’t it? A calculating grin appeared on his face, eyes sparkling. “All your diamonds?”

Iskall stopped and looked at him, then shrugged. “Oh for the love of it… Sure. Let’s make a bet. I have about a stack of diamond blocks at the moment. If you manage to get Doc into a relationship they are all yours. But I won’t wager my diamonds for nothing. So let’s say… You got a month. If he isn’t dating by then…”

“I don’t even have that many diamonds, not fair”, Grian interrupted and Iskall sighed in annoyance.

“Well… If he doesn’t have a date by then you’ll have to… I don’t know… Collect a bunch of shulker boxes full of sand and gravel for me that are worth about as much?”

Grian hesitated for a second. Getting that much material would be a lot of work. But those diamond blocks sure sounded nice.

“Or do you think you wouldn’t be able to win the bet?”

Well that was it. He wouldn’t back out of it now and Iskall knew that. Damn his competitiveness.

“I’m in. You’ll see. By the end of the month he’ll have a date and hopefully won’t ever bother you again.”

Grian stretched out his hand and Iskall grabbed it, both grinning, both so sure of their victory.

Grian was walking around the campfire in deep thought. He had made the bet with the intention of winning, sure, but he had no idea how he’d get Doc a date. That guy spent most of his time in Area 77 and the only other person in there was Scar. And Scar was off limits if he wanted to stay friends with Iskall.

He needed somebody else. Somebody Doc wouldn’t be able to resist. But who? What was even Doc’s type? Did he like girls or guys? Grian knew far too little about him to start any planning. So he had to gather information first. He needed someone who knew Doc. Someone who could answer him all of his questions. Someone…

“Grian, my man. What’s going on? Are you planning to dig a trench around our campfire with your feet?”

Grian stopped and looked up at Ren who was just landing in the Hippie camp, his Elytra folding behind his back. It was like fate wanted him to win the bet.

“REN! You and Doc are friends, aren’t you?”

Ren looked confused at that question, but nodded slowly. “I’m still loyal to the Hippie movement, don’t you worry.”

Grian hurriedly shook his head. He didn’t want Ren to think he was doubting him. “I just… I need to know some things about Doc. It is very important.”

Ren still looked confused, but he sat down next to the campfire and motioned him to go on.

“Has he ever had a date?”

“What?” Ren laughed a little and raised his eyebrows at Grian. “What kind of question is that?”

“I just… I need to know. I can’t tell you why.”

Ren looked at him, searching for something and then finally answered. “Well he had an on and off relationship with someone back in… god Season 4, I think. They ended it on good terms. He hasn’t been since then.”

Grian nodded and took out a small book, starting to take notes. This only seemed to amuse Ren even more.

“Grian, are you…?”

Grian didn’t let him finish his sentence. He had no time for unnecessary questions. He was a man on a mission. “So is he interested in girls or…?”

“Both, I’d say.”

Grian nodded. That made it a little easier. They had only three girls after all. But it also made the choice for a date harder.

“So you think he’d need someone who is a redstoner like him or do you think he’d be happy with a builder who has now clue about redstone as well.”

Grian looked at Ren in deep thought. Maybe the right candidate was right in front of him. Maybe he needed those two to see that there was more than just friendship going on between them.

Ren smirked at the question. “Yeah, sure. He won’t have a problem with that. It would be good for him to get a break from all the technical talking, you know.”

Well that was all he needed to hear. Those two really would make a perfect match. Now he just needed to get them in the same spot at the same time and prepare some romantic mood. Easy, right?

A few days later Grian had finally managed to get them. It had taken quite a lot of trickery. He had sent Ren off to some location, pretending to meet him there. Then he had dropped a hint to Doc that there was some dangerous Hippie activity going on in the same area. He had set up a picnic blanket in the middle of a flower field just outside of Hermitville, filled with snacks and a bottle of wine. He himself was hiding in some trees nearby just to make sure everything went alright.

He saw Ren arrive and look around in confusion. His communicator blinked, when a message came in, asking where the hell he was. He wrote back, apologising that he would run a little late and that Ren could help himself to something to eat.

He sent the message and saw Ren sitting down with a sigh. Now on to phase two. If his calculations were right Doc should arrive about…

The sound of rockets interrupted his thoughts and in a gust of petals Doc landed next to the blanket, looking at Ren in confusion.

“What the hell are you planning here, Hippie?!”

Ren just shrugged and pointed at the food. “Waiting for Grian to show up. No planning. You need to chill a little, Doc. The whole Area 77 thing is taking its toll on you. You are getting paranoid.”

Doc looked at Ren dubious, but after a few seconds of silence he caved in and sat down on the blanket. “Well… I wouldn’t want this to go to waste. Even if it is from a Hippie.” Ren giggled and patted Doc lightly on the back, handing him a glass and filling it with wine.

Grian grinned from his position in the tree. This was really going well. How lucky that he had found the perfect candidate right away. He had never seen Doc smiling like that now that he thought about it. It was nice. It suited him. Grian absentmindedly wondered why he wasn’t smiling more often. He could have gotten a date long ago if he did.

Watching those two wasn’t really as exciting as Grian had anticipated. There was no blushing, not stuttering or hand holding. He had hoped the romantic setting would bring out feelings both of them had buried. It didn’t. They were enjoying the picnic, but of all the things they used the opportunity to talk about some business deals.

And when they parted after an hour with nothing more than a wave as a goodbye Grian mentally scratched Ren’s name off of the list for possible dating candidates. He should have known that before. Those guys had been friends for so long they would have realised their feelings by now if they had any.

Maybe he needed to try to get an opportunity to talk to Doc and get some information that way. He was sneaky enough to get some information and the next date would be a huge success. ~*~ A/N: So this was to be pretty much what the title says. Grian setting up date after date after date for Doc. In doing so he’s getting to know him pretty well and starts slowly falling in love, while being completely in denial. And yet, he’s getting more and more jealous of the dates he sets up. During the last date it seems like Doc might be interested in the other Hermit as well and Grian’s jealousy just explodes and he interrupts the date and confesses. And yeah. That’s about it. Just a cheesy comedy story

The Neverending Story

This movie traumatized me back when Disney Channel would play it every other weekend, and it continues to do so. It was good to come back to it after too many years.

Vertical Limit

I'm actually surprised I could find gifs for this, tbh, as I didn't think anyone remembered this movie. I liveblogged this one, with some commentary and observations. It was fun.

The Mountain Between Us

Different enough from the book to keep it feeling fresh, though it felt like something was missing. Don't get me wrong, it's good, it's just that so much of the book was internal, and that doesn't translate well to screen.

Along Came Polly

Another rewatch. Nice to know this one still makes me laugh.

Wolf Creek

Hoo boy, this was something else. It owes a lot to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and it was most certainly made in the mid 2000's, right at the start of the torture porn era of horror. Not to say it's terribly gory, just that it's graphic and very, VERY mean-spirited. A tough watch, but I'd watch it again before, say, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Scream 2

A near perfect sequel, if you ask me. I'm planning on ranting about the franchise in general once I'm finished with it, so that's all I'm saying for now.

The Lost Boys

Yep, rewatch. At this point, it doesn't take much before I'm waxing poetic about allegories and how this is a tragedy in disguise as a coming of age story, and I'm probably going to have a look at the sequels, so expect more about this later.

Evil Dead (2013)

HOLY FORKING SHIRT BALLS, THIS IS AWESOME. At first, I wasn't too sure I wanted to give this a shot, since remakes generally suck and I wasn't too keen on the level of gore I'd heard about. Thank the Dead Meat channel on YouTube for finally talking me into this, because this was one of the most fun viewing experiences I've had in a hot minute. Again, expect a franchise rant!

Second time around, and I made Sis watch with me. (This would actually make a really good double feature with It Chapter One, tbh...) Solid all around, and I've enjoyed Scott Derrickson's work before, but Finney and Gwen are easily the strongest elements of the movie. I'd take bullets for these kids.

By happy accident, I finally stumbled across the extended version! Which means I got a whole extra hour to cry about everything!

I don't even know how to start this post all I know is that it's gonna be all over the place. But I guess the first thing I should start with and set the tone for the rest of the rant bc it's gonna be long, is that edissy shippers are gross, and I really don't think i need to explain much bc we have all seen their behavior before and how they are the ones that made the stranger things fandom be so full of toxicity, and if you haven't seen their general behavior look it up on a unbiased page and you'll see bc this post is not gonna focus on their behavior in general I'm gonna narrow it down a little to a specific group of people within the edissy shippers that somehow they manage to be worse but in ways that is blatantly disrespectful to the actors themselves.

I've said it so many times on here before but since this specific rant is about that I think I should say it again, if you wanna ship 2 fictional characters, go for it, if you wanna ship 2 real people that ARE together that's a little less "okay" but they are together so whatever, but now what we are NOT gonna do is ship two people that are not together, simply bc you also ship their characters and if you on top of that are doing this simply to piss off fans that don't like your fictional ship, then you need some help, doesn't matter what type of help but please get some bc this is the behavior of a 10 year old and even for them this is not okay so why would it be for grown ass adults. Shipping Eddie and Chrissy is one thing and I'm not gonna go into that bc I've made it very clear what my feelings are on it and it's not the point, but when you decide to drag this ship to real life and involve Grace and Joe you're a fucking weirdo, y'all can get mad all you want bc at the end of the day it will make it clear why you're getting mad, it's bc you feel called out on it. And if the act of shipping two real life people who are only co workers isn't bad enough then we also have shit like this

"Now, What hairstyle should I give my beloved today Hm?~" Grabbing your hairbrush from your back as he indian sitted behind you floating, He styled your hair into this cute two braided ponytails

Akane brusted in as he knelt down infront of the two of you holding flowers that looked like he plucked it from the garden "Mmmm.. 4 Points, You shouldn't pluck the members hardwork from the garden you know~" She placed her cheek on her palm as she had imaginary flowers around her

"NY APOLIGIES AOI-CHAN!!" He kneeled down and sulked, as Yamabuki stood beside him not paying attention to his friend, Aoi put a little more flowers pings and clips as she added finishing touches "There we go! All done! What do you think [F/N]? ~" She handed you a mirror as you admired her work "I love it! It's even the exact tyoe if braid repunzel had in the movie!" You complimented ger work as she blushed

You didn't take a single pin or elastic off your hair, It was too pretty!

Emotional, personal rant incoming dealing with sensitive topics like crashes so if you can't read about that please don't read any further!

But it is just getting hard for me to enjoy motorsport without some sort of weird anxiety feeling most weekends. Well, when I am talking about motorsport I mean FIA ones.

And sadly it's not just F1 but it's FE too.

The lack luster safety procedures have just been accepted.

We just don't talk about how cars drove under a crane which less than 10 years ago was basically the reason why we lost Jules. We simply don't admit how fucking dangerous it was that fans where just able to walk under a lifted F1 car that stood in the middle of the public.

We simply moved past the fact that there not only was a bomb attack next to an F1 track but also that there in fact was one just after the FE race.

We simply shrugged off the horrible delayed reaction to bring out yellow or red flags,hekk even deploy the safety car.

We have just come to terms with the fact that the FIA broke a rule last year that not only decided a championship but also was completely dangerous as it put engines and drivers in a stressful situation where no one knew what was going on.

We never really talked about the fact that during the race the helicopter once flew so low that a driver had to complain on the radio because he thought his race pace was affected by the winds.

We just mention the horrible attacks on fans that have been coming out this year.

We justify throwing flares on a track while the drivers are going at 250+ km/h.

We embrace the decision to not red flag a race when in fact the drivers are asking for it to be red flagged because they didn't think the conditions where save for them to go out.

We accept that team personal are being pushed to their absolute limit.

We understand somehow that it's okay to punish one driver but not the other for the same thing once again creating horrible inconstiances in how penalties are applied.

We just acknowledge that some drivers get away race after race with blocking or impending others.

We brush off the fact that it took minutes to get another car off the car it was crushing while the driver could have potentially been inside there with a concussion.

We just deal with drivers putting themself through excruciating pain because nothing is being done to the point where doctors say that if this continues in a few years it could have serious affect on their physical health.

We have to watch as again and again, drivers, fans and team personals health and safety is brushed aside, ignored and straight up endangered.

Every race weekend I can turn on an FIA lead motorsport serie and I know that after the race there will be at least 2 instances which are complete safety hazards.

It's terrifying and frankly I think we don't talk about it enough.

The FIA has become so reckless in their regards for human life because their sole goal is to make F1 an entertainment sport like WWE. F1 isn't an entertainment or scripted sport.

They just deal with things like there aren't actual human lives on the line.

Every race, especially in F1 and espeically with next years calendar looming in the back of my mind, I watch I just wait for the worst to happen. Every race I expect to hold my breath, to type on angry post, knowing that it will only stop once we have had another accident that potentially has to be even worse than Romain because they won't learn otherwise.

It sounds maybe silly and I can admit that at least for now I feel safe but with all the exhaustion next year, I know that I will not watch a race feeling completely relaxed.

I know that next year I will be turning in and just hoping to god that we don't lose another drive in an avoidable accident like Jules or in something horrific like we last Anthoine.

It's a thought that just sinks in sometimes that we lost so many young talents but it know manifests itself in the form of "They know they were taking a risk. But are we really taking a risk now or is the FIA just tempting faith to do it's inevitable job?"

How many races, how many crashed will it take, how many people might get injured, before we finally have change?

Which driver might we potentially have to lose, which mechanics might be eaten up by guilt, until there's a stop?

Your rant is well said! Personally, it would drive me crazy to see only a line or two for each paragraph. I understand making breaks in the page for dialogue, but if the action goes with the dialogue why would you separate them???? Also 124 words is NOT a long paragraph. I hate that people's attention spans have grown so short. In all fairness, I'm more frequently an academic writer than a creative writer. A paragraph under 300 words is unfathomable to me though. Ugh!! To sum up, I totally agree with everything you said, and I hate the camera angle comparison too. I think OP needs to start reading/writing plays if they want that type of structure. If they want their writing to fit novel structure, what they're doing won't cut it.

Yes!!!! I see a fic with a new paragraph for every two sentences, I back the fuck out just as fast as I would out of a wall-of-text fic. Writing is all about moderation. Doing too much of something is just as bad as doing too little.

And yes again!!! In many cases action is tied with dialogue - once again, the same idea - and separating them into different paragraphs will ruin this idea.

I have to write a lot of academic papers as well, and when I don't have a word limit, my paragraphs can take up half a page. You need a lot of words to explain your ideas well. This also applies to creative writing, although maybe to a lesser extent. My paragraphs in creative writing are usually 70-150 words, not counting the dialogue. Less is too little, more is tedious to read. In academic writing you don't have to worry as much about your readers getting bored, tho, so you can go off for real 😂

I also thought about saying that!!! Screenplays might be a better storytelling medium for them if they can't handle average length paragraphs and want something snappier. But like, it's not my business lol, so I didn't say that in the post itself

Random Miraculous Thoughts: Season 5 Catchup Edition

(Because I finally got caught up and I had to write my thoughts down! Warning: this is gonna be long. And spoilers for S5 up to Elation.)

You can tell that the writers saw people saying the Rooster’s power was OP and decided to put limits on it, which just made it more confusing in the end.

Marinette’s whole kwami scavenger hunt idea in Destruction was so clever! Also seeing Monarch get frustrated is always funny.

Last season I would’ve been cheering over Marinette throwing away the pictures but now when it immediately cut to Adrien walking into the bakery all nervous and blushing afterwards I was like “oh NO”

In conclusion I like this season so far! The overarching plot is good to have, the different character dynamics are a nice change of pace, and above all, I’m SO glad it’s being released in order.

This post has been circling around Twitter and I just want to share my thoughts on it in a longer form rant addressing each of their points with ideas for world building of how that could work in a high fantasy setting.

First off, their beginning statement is just wrong. There are lots of reasons to have a disabled person within a fantasy setting. To say otherwise is (1) ablest and (2) very poor world building. Then again, their definition of high fantasy seems to be limited to one where magic is easily accessible and basically limitless, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they are just not creative rather than ablest.

In world building terms this boils down to a few different factors. First, can magic do the thing. Second, does the person have access to the magic. Third, do they want the magic to be used. Basically physical, economical, cultural. Every fantasy world will have limits on its magic or rules about how it works. For example, if you cut off a limb and use healing magic on the wound, does the limb grow back or just heal over? If its the latter, congrats you have a disabled fantasy character. See how easy that was? Time can also be a factor here, maybe magic can heal an injury that just happened but once the body heals on its own that's now the baseline for where magic can heal them to. The economic factor ties into this as well. Most the time in fantasy not everyone is able to do any type of magic. Sometimes its bloodlines, sometimes its taught, sometimes its random, but regardless there will likely be people rural enough that there is no healer nearby or if its rare enough then working class will simply be unable to afford it. The cultural aspect is if people can heal the injury and are available to do it, does the injured person want to be healed. Maybe they don't trust magic, antivaxx-esque, or come from a culture of warriors who believe in keeping their battle scars as sources of pride.

Broken bones are an injury that if properly treated will heal naturally. In my own world Blades of Treason this would be treated with minor healing potions to ease pain and accelerate the healing, but there will still be a period of healing. Basically injuries that will heal on their own may not need or be worth using the world's healing magic on. In the meantime, the person will still need some sort of mobility device, even if its not a permanent necessity.

Paralysis is a bit more complicated medically and how this comes into the effectiveness of magic will vary based on the source of the paralysis. Maybe if it was an acquired illness or injury that caused paralysis it can be healed, but a genetic cause cannot. Maybe like in point 1, if it can heal on its own magic will help, but if it will never heal on its own magic won't bypass that. There are also the economic and social aspects I already touched on above. And this is me just spit-balling here, there are so many reasons someone may still be disabled in a fantasy universe.

Controlling a flight spell and casting a fireball at your enemies may be difficult or even impossible depending on the magic system. If a spell requires concentration to be used than multitasking is just infeasible. I do really like the idea of a mage who can't walk using a flight spell to move themselves around in everyday scenarios while needing a wheelchair if too tired to spell cast or in combat situations to concentrate on other spells.

This is the only (partially) reasonable critique this person gives. Accessibility devices should probably look like they were made with the technology of the rest of the fantasy world. A dwarven tech based wheelchair can be possible in your setting and is sick as fuck. Historically, canes and crutches are relatively easy to craft from branches and wheels aren't exactly a new invention either. Having a cart pushed or carried by others or pulled by animals is also a very low tech solution. Mobility aids are not a modern invention and were certainly possible to make if they don't look quite the same as we are used to today. Animal with saddle attached is also an option, although it would require a specialized saddle (I believe Bran had something like this in Game of Thrones, but I've only seen clips of the show so don't come at me if I'm off). Still possible and setting appropriate though.

It is impossible to tell a story without conflict. The type of conflict can vary but there must be some level of stakes. They only way I can see the type of world they suggest working within a story is a more slice of life comedy style story where life or death stakes rarely, if ever, come into play. If you're going for a more serious story line, unlimited healing is a detriment rather than an asset. Magic does not have to be extremely rare or dangerous in order for disabled characters to exist. With a little bit of creativity (y'know, like what fantasy is based on) there are literally infinite ways you can explain having disabled characters while still having an extensive magic system. And all that I've written is about how non-magic disabilities interact with magic, I haven't even touched on how magic caused disabilities may interact with other magic.

Sooooo I was gonna hold off until the full season was done, kinda give the TV show time to play out as an adaptation instead of being distracted by the alterations being made for this version. Because alterations are okay! I think if you're going to adapt anything from one medium to another it should be to express the content in a new way based on the different limitations & possibilities of one medium vs another. You can't do PJO [the TV show] exactly as written in PJO [the books] - it doesn't work and shouldn't be the point - and I think the show is doing a great job to consciously avoid that trap. (My personal opinions on how several first-person narrated book-to-movie adaptations have fallen somewhat flat is a post for another time.)

And so, I was planning to wait. This is a franchise I hold very dear to my heart and have cared about for more than a decade, I recognize that I will be protective about how a story like this is being shown to a whole new generation and may influence them. I wanted to see how the shifted motivations, etc would progress objectively even if I couldn't see how it would get its way back to the story I know from the book. Let this new version run its course and go from there. You can absolutely shift some things and let the narrative move on a slightly different path without losing the heart of it - it's something fanfiction has really helped me embrace despite my initial impulse to bristle at changes to the stories I love.

But I just watched ep 3 and . . . I'm frustrated.

Everything just feels so shallow?

And I want to be clear: I don't mean bad acting. There are a lot of moments where I enjoy the delivery and the emotions the cast are putting out, and their portrayal is a separate thing from what they are portraying.

I am talking about the plot & the relationships & the characterizations & jfc the PACING. I don't know how to be cohesive about this because there's so many things that just make me so apprehensive about this show hitting deep enough emotionally by the end. It is so empty at the moment and I haven't been convinced that that will change as of yet.

Without further ado, an incomplete list of my thoughts thus far:

Oh uh . . . THIS IS MADE OF SPOILERS . . . so yeah

Gabe. I genuinely do not hate - or even really care enough to dislike - Gabe? What? I just. Just how? How can that even happen? This is such a distracting point because Gabe is a character that is supposed to be fundamentally irredeemable. Full stop. So plainly a nasty, abusive, toxic, utter dirtbag that Percy making the "warding-off-evil gesture" designed for monsters causes a reaction to a mortal. He is such an integral part of Percy's (let alone Sally's) character through a good chunk of the first book in particular, and even later on in PJO & HOO Let's be real here: Tartarus smells like Gabe to Percy even after years and I don't think you could get more on the nose than that. I really just don't understand how the show can drop the ball like this. I can - and might, once the season is complete - go on a whole separate rant about Gabe, but I think I've made enough of a point for now.

Let's talk about blue food. This show has done A LOT of verbal exposition all over the place. About everything. Like maybe kinda too much at times if we're being honest. So where is the explanation for the blue food? You have this poignant Thing about Percy burning the blue jelly beans as a sacrifice bc it's precious to him and yet give 0 reason why beyond the fact that his mom gave it to him? This isn't some fun easter egg for book fans to squeal over in the background bc it's a tiny fun reference you'd only notice as a reader - this is a developed plot point that (again) is recurrent throughout PJO & HOO oh and also ties back to Gabe being a dick for no reason but moving on not to mention a specific example of the bond Percy shares with his mother specifically in the abusive environment she endures to keep him safe. I would not be surprised if they do this bit of exposition later on, but the omission really made it feel hollow.

Which brings me to Sally Jackson, our queen. I like a lot about the portrayal that's been shown so far in terms of her alone, but I really didn't feel like we were given enough to show the relationship between her & Percy. This relationship is so so SO important - and I think the show recognizes that on a surface level to the point that it's altered the plot to confirm that she's not dead from the beginning and make that Percy's openly stated motivation for the quest - and yet I feel as though we've been 'told not shown' that fact? Sally is actively present for such a short amount of time to begin with and it's therefore even more important that her significance to Percy is given sufficient weight for the audience to buy in quickly.

Something that threw me off right from the beginning was the pacing. I think I actually did a sort of shocked double take after Mrs. Dodds went down because it's, presumably, the crux of that episode and yet was a blink-and-you-miss-it kind of scene. Then again with the toilet scene! There was no real build up or follow up; it just kinda happened? It's like all the important pieces are there but nothing is being given the space it really needs, no room to breathe, no time to let the audience be drawn in to the story & it's characters. Emotional/plot beats go by so fast you hardly have time to absorb them while other scenes are longer but still empty. Percy's introduction to the Hermes cabin & the montage (which was very fun btw) of him during capture the flag come to mind in that regard. Scenes where you have time to take it in but there's not much there to take. I don't really know what to do with that I guess? It makes it hard to judge what I'm supposed to find important and that throws me off.

Maybe this is kinda still pacing, but I feel like many of the opportunities for suspense/surprise/tension have been totally missed (if not outright sabotaged). There are instances earlier, but I am still reeling from the Aunty Em scenes. I'm trying not to be stuck on "in the book" rhetoric because that's a different beast, but I really have a hard time understanding the benefit to altering the reveal in that way. Same thing with the formal announcement that Sally was not killed - Percy barely has time to grieve before being told she's alive, and any suspense that might have built by Percy mulling over her fate is ruined. Other scenes, like the Furies on the bus, feel like they have no stakes because they're dispatched so quickly. (Okay yeah this is clearly still tied to the pacing lol). There are smaller moments where I also felt the 'told not shown' rearing it's head. Places where they say something is important but don't show anything to back that up. It's like despite all the stuff about how their quest is dangerous and how dire the circumstances are, there's no actual evidence that that's true? They're in a cab and then the bus and then strolling through the woods and then killing Medusa - all with no visible damage or noticeable repercussions to them. I just haven't felt any payoff from their successes because their successes aren't made to look like actual accomplishments.

Look. This isn't the movies. I saw The Lightning Thief [movie] in theatres (quite possibly on opening weekend) and went from exhilarated anticipation going in to actually literally ranting with my friend on the way out. Those movies were barely based on the source material and that is infuriating as a fan of such a quality series. The main frustration there *was* that MANY significant things were missing and/or different from the book not to mention the flagrant disregard for the basic plot. That's not what's going on here, at least not for me.

This is disappointing in a different way because I'm (mostly) able to step back from the fact that certain moments in the book aren't being show here (looking at you, hacky sack scene) or are being adjusted for this newer version; there are elements I'm definitely enjoying for themselves, and I can see potential in some of the changes long term. I'm going to watch through because I am willing to put some faith in a wonderful cast and Uncle Rick that this will come to a place that does the story justice.

But at the moment? I'm just not there yet.
