hi yall i'm demi (26, they/she, pacific) and this is sung! feel free to give this a like or dm me on discord at demi6468 if you'd like to plot
if you're wondering if i'm the demi you know... probably. it's been a while since i've done tumblr rp so pls bear w me. this barbie is also a shawol so expect constant references in and out of character. that said, more sung info (sungfo, if u will) below:
-----
background:
grew up poor but then listened to paris hilton and just stopped being poor (or, as history will say, his parents' restaurant business blew up)
moved around quite a bit in older child/tween years as the business grew
was an idol fan from a young age, but the 'rents wanted sung as their business successor
sucks 4 them sung became a trainee anyway. was set for debut after a couple years but that fell through, then the company started treating him as a model instead of an idol and it wore him down and he left
took on military service
didn't give up on his dream tho, joined another company after coming back and worked as a back up dancer for a fallback
tldr for the ending survival show > temporary group > disbandment > solo
personality:
vitamin, sunshine, kind, sweet, polite, hopeless romantic, hard working, determined, introspective, dreamer, overthinker, judgmental, gives himself very good advice but very seldom follows it, can be a bit manipulative (though he doesn't think he is)
he's a pisces, for context on all the above. also a crybaby. cries for happiness, sadness, anything in between
sung's idol self and true self aren't particularly different, idol sung is just more careful/shows negative traits less. he has a pretty good reputation, and a lot of his Brand relies on being likable
the biggest actual difference is sung's a raging homo, which ofc isn't public knowledge
introverted extrovert. most would class him as an extrovert, but he really needs the time to have a cool down period
plots:
sung loves to read, so fellow readers are an easy connection
cares Very Much about music and dance. while he's a known kpop gg stan, he has a decent range of taste in music. over his idol career, he's developed a strong love for songwriting and choreographing to where at this point he's not particularly interested in releasing anything his hands Haven't touched. this is a great place for other diehards/creatives to connect, but also where sung's negative traits could come out. he could be quick to judge someone's commitment level and react poorly due to it
it'd be Lovely to fill the role of a choreographer that sung really respects and has a close relationship with. preferably not an idol for this one, but they would be the person who co-choreographed and starred in sung's move! i see this relationship as one where their passions about dance line up very well and it was an instant connection. they could have worked together at other points as well, like choreographing for bsides for his first solo concert
that said, would also love other dancers that he keeps on retainer for releases and performances! as he cares so much about his ~art~ he really wants to keep those he feels align with his work. so the same faces pop up a lot. he's very loyal and gives flowers (mostly metaphorical but literal too) to all staff and crew, whether they're on stage with him or not
also loves romantic dramas. he's less knowledgable in other fields (least knowledgable in horror) but still partakes. he's just more likely to sims 4 get famous scream and faint over a romance actor
any athletes i am so sorry to tell u this gayby has no clue who you are
other survival group members! idt i'll make it an official wanted ad since i left everything so vague, but there are so many directions for that. i also Headcanon jsj (the temp group) to being a pseudo sibling group with rhiannon and yebin's viv:id 🤓
i'd love for another vivid member to come and be the feat on sung's song be your enemy! yebin was karina in want and rhi was seulgi on heart stop so it'd be fun to continue the trend
another negative place to come from could be just catching sung on a bad day back when he was pushed as a model in his og company. he was very worn out, discouraged, and idk teen hormones im sure didn't make it easier. on the flip side, someone supporting him then would be lovely
the easiest way to tick sung off without much effort has to do with politeness. he gives a lot more grace to foreigners, but really doesn't stand for it from born koreans
i mention negative ideas most since those are hardest for nice muses BUT in gen, sung is kind of a 'friend of the industry' guy. though, especially when he was younger, he had a hard time picking up on cues from people that they didn't want to be friends. he's pretty full on and touchy straight away. loves him a little cuddle
with romance, he's a chronic falling in love with friends-er. but he's also a True hopeless romantic so a guy says smth nice to him once and he walks away with a little bit of a crush 9/10 times. doesn't tend to go for his best interests, so negative romantic r/s are welcome too (past or present)
also he had a gf sometime when he was around 16-18, so that could be fun to play with!

ok got too excited for a sec and unfollowed you ignore that- but long awaited sol opinion time???
batter up wasn’t bad. idm the song tbh and at some point it might grow on me but overall the sound was boring tbh… no hate at all to the girls and stuff bc they’re so young but i feel that the company hyped this gg up for so long and with the reputation of being the next gg up yg after blackpink, the final product is less of a “this is trash” and more of a “this was all you could really do?” bc i know for a fact they probably have newer sounds kept away in the basement somewhere.
the vocals, rap, and dance are all great. but the main issue is that a lot of them are still minors. mainly the youngest who is 13. her voice will change a lot as she grows older and i hope yt know how to accommodate that properly bc i know for a fact that companies will force artists to sing in a certain range for their whole career bc “it’s what the people want”
i saw people complaining about not having a storyline to their group and tbh, i don’t think a group needs a story to be popular. i get that having concepts like that is what makes k-pop what it is, but if you focus too much on a storyline for your sounds, you lose part of the musical ascent and limit yourself to certain topics. im actually glad in this case that yg didn’t didn’t end up going with a storyline path bc it would restrict them further and with again, how they all are, having to make a concept that will fit the members for the whole long run is hard.
i think storyline are wonderful if you’re able to show subplots and different meanings within the songs without having to stick to that one story; each song is a tale itself. ateez and txt pull these off well imo just bc of the way they storylines are already so complicated, meaning you’d have to dig deeply into things for the lore. it’s not constricted to one side of things. idk if any of that made sense-
the mc was. boring… idk like i feel like the could have done so much more to show case them? the rap line had a good part in the mv where they got more physicality but the vocals just. stood. idk. maybe that’s just my inner performer who was told to use up the stage a lot coming though LMFAO
omg i hope you enjoyed this little spillage of my thoughts. i don’t think i’ll follow baby monster just bc it feels odd? to follow them when again, over half the members are younger than me TwT
ok soju show coming to you… sometime. that channel… always so late to things smh
SOL OPINION TIME!!!! iput my Glasses on and fought away the eepiness for this 🤓
1 - !!! THIS !!! i don’t think it’s a bad song at all. i did think it sounded a little like. quiet? but that’s j me probably ive had my headphones in p much all day at tinnitus inducing volume so. Yeah ❓ from what ive seen most people don’t think it’s bad or anything, the complaint is that it’s boring. like. lazytown snoozefest big yawn boring. they put people through that long of a wait and built up that much suspense and excitement for it to just be. That???? kind of giving low effort laziness i fear.. like at least make it a little bit life changing damn
2 - THIS ABAINNNNN more groups need to start making music for the sake of it being music my god 😭😭 the lore and storylines are cool if you’re into that but if you’re a more casual listener and you don’t wanna get into all the things you feel like you need to know prior to a release bc of all the importance the story has to it then it kinda sucks ??? take sticker for example (ijbol) . that was not complicated intricate story telling . they were cunty cowboys and taeil had a dog
3 - the mv erm… it was there idk 🙁 someone said if u told them it was a nugu group w $10 and a dream they’d believe it and lowk i would too 😭 some bits were cool ig but i was thinking…. its called “batter up”…. so couldn’t they do sth fun and . yk . baseball themed?? taking terminology from a game and then not hsing thatgame j sounds kinda stupid like i get u want them to look perfect and cool but its Right Thre .
THANKU FOR SPILLING UR THOUGHTS BSF!!! sry if i wasnt v coberent im tired lmao. i wont b following them either i j wanted to see what other people thought abt it :o

Hello! No London for me bestie, I'm not going back to the UK, I'll be in Prague actually 😂 then maybe Italy if I have enough money and energy
SM artists truly need to unonise, because Taeyeon now?! SM can't respect their older idols aka those who have been brining money to their table for years, I don't even know what's the newest groups' situation like. AND A NEW GG soon?!?!? Also where are Shotaro and Sungchan, where is their group at..... I'm so tired
CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED SHINEE'S CONCERTS I HATE EVERYTHING. At least I watched the livestream 😭 and everyone was there, Jongin </333 Okay, love my 5th gen rookie Shinee <333 Hard is very "current bgs sound" it does sound like Nctee a little bit, but the vocals!!! Sounds like a banger tbh, it's not too weird so I can digest it quickly lmao. I like when Shinee is having fun, even though it may not be my fave TT from them, I feel like I may like it more than DCM. The MV was very NCT, perhaps not my fave, SM is a hit or miss with their music videos. Anyways, it's very 1st gen, got some Seo Taji and the Boys vibes. BUT THE BSIDEEEEEES!
It's frustrating because KQ can put so much thought and creativity into the lore, the MVs got so much better too, but the photos? And why do they only post one for each concept, Hybe drops 2737272 photos and they're usually really cool.
Shinee's concepts may be simple, but the Thom Browne ones are very aesthetically pleasing and the NCT-esque ones are fun too, because the pics are dynamic despite the boring background. Love all the boards you've prepared! I actually bought some more SM albums, particularly NCT's and Aespa's (I know, fuck SM, but I got a good deal) and the photos?! WOW. The issue is KQ is scared of taking risks, they can't commit fully, even the outfits for this comeback, we thought we'd be getting Yeehawteez, but it's so half-assed and we're back to fucking bikers and bodyguards, lol. And I'll never understand why they had funky hair colours for Halazia and not this. And now Jongho is purple??? A bit late, mate. I genuinely think the hair could add more quirkiness to the concept photos
(I appreciate the idea of combining regular photos with manhwa concept, but not sure about the execution https://twitter.com/zhouang/status/1671524592387596288?t=OtcpMguvP4yo722xCzVnWg&s=19)
I know we're in the cyber post-apo world and they probably won't be back to the sea y'know, like pirates, but if we ever actually get the sea concept. A.C.E are truly the standard https://twitter.com/sehyoonshoney/status/1661359705506164741?t=B4l7FsVLKDdePdTlMwOTlQ&s=19
Seriously??? The man is trying and yet https://twitter.com/hwalilac/status/1672083626736095233?t=7QYMQFWYXUf3LPgcWGdZTw&s=19
Yes, Outlaw just like Movement is very cohesive, but I feel like that kind of cohesiveness is overrated and a bit too much. The songs blend in, I don't know where one ends and another one begins, and they're STACKED with noise and switch ups, so listening to the whole thing from the beginning to the end is a lot. ZFP1 is a cohesive album, it fits the late summer vibe, yet each song is very different. I'd say ZFP3 is similar. I just wish they let Jongho's voice rest, the amount of high notes *sigh* I think it's Wake Up? He straight up yells, and listen I'm an opera lover, but this isn't it ://// Edenary is pissing me off a bit, ngl...
Sorry, everyone's meeting Yuta except you 😭 the same friend of mine met Taeyong twice, once he walked past her on the way to Loewe's show (and girl lost her earring), then gave her his autographs after the show.... 😭 and hold on?! https://twitter.com/mintmag_th/status/1672549191372124170?t=YYeGI5dSL65PF-FbjGREnQ&s=19
Ok but 127's line up I just.... gonna say something possibly controversial, but I don't think it's that unpopular: Haechan should be in Dream only and Mark in 127, they're already overworked. I love TY and I know why he's the center, but putting my bias aside I feel like sometimes his time could be given to someone else, same with lines. Or maybe if they had a proper 3rd rapper, not Jamal, he needs to sing! And not Johnny - bless him, but he's not a rapper, sometimes they make Yuta rap and I can't even... Wait, did you hear this cover Yuta did? https://www.instagram.com/p/Csi1KVEo5_3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== I really like the original and I can't believe he did that 😭 my jrock loving ass was shook
Troye?! https://twitter.com/5ugaring/status/1672121681866014721?t=ZJtmpVafz1VTQsiqupEsdQ&s=19 why are you everywhere jgdhahajshdhahshshs he got Taeyong too 🥴
Uncle Hwaaaa! Oh to be a little kid and paint Hwa's toenails and run around carelessly ajhdhshdhahshsjshsshhaag and what's with all that kids content? Rip to y'alls ovaries or something 🤭 it's just like that one kindergarten teacher Seonghwa fic I once read
HAVE YOU SEEN A MAN SO BEAUTIFUL LIKE I'M SO DAMAGED YET HEALED BECAUSE OF THESE PICTURES LIKE?!?!?! https://twitter.com/pseonghwapics/status/1671800295607730176?t=WK-G9vQ55AbTm_2jkdGUCg&s=19 AND https://twitter.com/nobodylikehwa/status/1671662936652120067?t=rS8KzmH1gZC9GlxamGwjCA&s=19

The Titan situation is sad, but at the same time, why do people do that? It didn't sound safe from the beginning, like leave the Titanic alone...and now they shared the same fate, the 19 year old shouldn't have been there... :/ ofc it's an awful thing, if they were even alive up to this point, imagine waiting for your death. But also MONEY TRULY MAKES PEOPLE GO FUCKING DERANGED WTF
Heeeeeey, See You in My 19th Life drama!? I totally missed it. Also started Bloodhounds, it's so sad, but wholesome too and WDH is so good, I missed him
Do the quiz Baek, I got Ricciardo lmao: https://uquiz.com/quiz/V6eoyv?p=983346

hello!! u escaping london three times i know why, u don’t wanna see the treble winners celebrations i get it 🤚🏻 OOOOO IN PRAGUE??? ITALY???? PLS FBQKDBWK LIVING THE ACTUAL LIFE !!!!! live ur old money in italy, wine and cheese and fruits (im sorry but what is that combo??) no bc taeyeon and everyone need to unionize??? fifty fifty also suing their company + IU fans sending trucks to her company??? is this truck season 😭😭 sm truly never lets their groups hit their peak and keep hitting it and make them bigger and brighter and better??? A NEW GG W SO MANY MEMBERS??? a girls generation dupe?? 😭😭 im so glad i bought nct’s resonance album bc they had everyone in it like sungchan was like jaejoong’s 4th generation,,, sm couldn’t have two jaejoong’s in one group they had to get him out 😭😭😭
CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED SHINEE'S CONCERTS I HATE EVERYTHING. It's frustrating because KQ can put so much thought and creativity into the lore, the MVs got so much better too, but the photos? And why do they only post one for each concept, Hybe drops 2737272 photos and they're usually really cool.
rIGHT??? they need a new creative director or something bc there’s soOOO much that can be done?? like give us every single penny form ur budget in that photobook,, GIVE US FILTER SOME FACIAL FEATURES need them to hire a sm creative director, i just need to see something,, ur right! hybe has great photos, sm’s 2014 era esp fs’s red tape side, wowzie like let’s get on that bar 😭😭
Shinee's concepts may be simple, but the Thom Browne ones are very aesthetically pleasing and the NCT-esque ones are fun too, because the pics are dynamic despite the boring background. sEE ITS MY ONE FAVOURITE THING ABT SM,, even if the photos are simple, there’s just so much to look at. like their features, the makeup, the camera angle, the bright outfits and it POPS w the shinee one esp?? LIKE it’s so simple but they make it look so like an editorial from a street fashion magazine???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I appreciate the idea of combining regular photos with manhwa concept, but not sure about the execution https://twitter.com/zhouang/status/1671524592387596288?t=OtcpMguvP4yo722xCzVnWg&s=19) /// I know we're in the cyber post-apo world and they probably won't be back to the sea y'know, like pirates, but if we ever actually get the sea concept. when i first saw this, it remained me of exo’s power era where they implemented comic books into their concept but differently than what atz did,, theirs suits it! the green meshes w the comic style im glad there’s no cloud bubble with some random thing written in it 😭😭 UR SO TRUE ACE’S PHOTOS FOR THAT ERA WERE SO MAGICAL IT GAVE ARIEL A RUN FOR HER MONEY?? esp w those hanboks wow???? ateez doing that but in their piratey outfit, in the water like that, w like a little glitter in the water <33 SEONGHWA REALLY IS TRYING WITH THE BARE MINIMUM LIKE GIVE HIM SO SOME METAL ROD OR SOMETHING OR A BROKEN TV HE COULD LEAN ON 😭😭
Yes, Outlaw just like Movement is very cohesive, but I feel like that kind of cohesiveness is overrated and a bit too much. everything u said here esp “i don't know where one ends and another one begins,” !!!! THEY ARE STACKED ABSOLUTE TO SOUND THE SAME oh ur spoke so right, zfp1 was so late summer almost autumn, it’s like each song was a different weather or season transitioning into the other,, no ur right some songs he’s just yelling, i wish to hear his softer notes where he completely breaks us,, with those almost whisper like notes OHHH IM WAITING FOR THAT DAYYY SO PATIENTLY LIKE JONGHO BREAK ME!!! sometimes his notes reminds me of winters,, sometimes there’s some similarities may b just me 🤚🏻im with u on that
Sorry, everyone's meeting Yuta except you 😭 the same friend of mine met Taeyong twice, once he walked past her on the way to Loewe's show (and girl lost her earring), then gave her his autographs after the show.... 😭 and hold on?! https://twitter.com/mintmag_th/status/1672549191372124170?t=YYeGI5dSL65PF-FbjGREnQ&s=19
NO BC IM FURIOUS GET THE FUCK OUT YALL OUT HERE MEETING TAEYONF ON THE STREETS??? the most i ever met a idol was svt being 10 mins away from me and me not noticing until they posted pictures w them stripping in the ocean. LOST HER EARRING?? gonna be a delulu and say did taeyong find it and did it become her cinderella momenf,, OH WITH EMRATA??? wait now that i think about it they kinda look alike 🧍🏻‍♀️
Ok but 127's line up I just.... gonna say something possibly controversial, but I don't think it's that unpopular: Haechan should be in Dream only and Mark in 127, they're already overworked. controversial but so damn talented and cohesive,, oUUU UR KINDA SUPER RIGHT i think mark fits that 127 style so much,, he brings so much spice into it and taeil easily can take over,, haechan has such a warm tone and it’s so pretty to listen to it and it somehow fits dream better?? johnny has such a nice voice like it’s so snakey esp when he said “if u happy and u know it clap ur hands” WHEWWWWW THE VOCALS ???? jamal😭😭😭 FHWKDHWK oh yuta. oh yuta that starting nOTE JUST ELEVATED ME TO A DIFF LEVEL???? SO CREEPY BUT SO PERFECT fits his scorpio so much what a talent sm scouted

it really is so extremely sad esp on the 19yo who wanted to please his dad and went with him omg 😭😭😭 saw posts from ppl saying that if your death is written in the depth of the ocean, you'll rent even a submarine to reach there on time. it’s so awful knowing that they can never recover their remains bc they’re probably just nothing now,, i feel for their family especially the man’s wife who said they were having a hard time breathing just thinking about them 🤲🏻🤲🏻 i just know the father’s biggest regret was bringing his son with him,, also saw a video of a man who was supposed to be in that exact ship a week before but didn’t go bc the weather was terrible and it shows the head guy saying what was wrong, and they still went. ill link it here bc it was truly scary to watch,,, makes me think that the guy in the video who brought the wreath for the titanic, titanic took saved him in that way
and this seems very awfully familiar.
Heeeeeey, See You in My 19th Life drama!? I totally missed it. Also started Bloodhounds, it's so sad, but wholesome too and WDH is so good, I missed him /// Do the quiz Baek, I got Ricciardo lmao: https://uquiz.com/quiz/V6eoyv?p=983346
YES IT ISSS !!!! ITS ACTUALLY SO GOOD??? bloodhounds got me crying man 😭😭😭 wdh’s acting just, it’s something about his face that when he cries it PAINS me to watch,, im also vv glad he’s back! hoping he gets some big projects and picks his options wisely!!! I DID AND I FBWNFHSJ I FOT SEBASTIAN 😭😭😭 LMFAOOOO??? NOT U GETTING HIM 😭😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
????? Wow https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/14imekp/former_miss_a_member_jiaformer_fx_member_amber/ /// And yet another Min Hee Jin controversy, I hate her so much. But I hate the defendes even more - DV 💖
OH THE VISUALS??? jia’s visuals are so beautiful like wow wow wow god is a woman.
im actually so appalled by the topic, like there’s absolutely no way she didn’t know what she was doing, either she’s trying to get traction or completely ruining herself….like even the god damn names??? sure they are common but when u put them against that title track and the history??? im convinced she knew what was happening, did it on purpose for the sakes of popularity and didn’t not expect the potential boycott. in the name of art you’re using a t*rrorist aesthetic?? what a new low.
😭😭😭
zayn’s joining exo??? LMFAOOOO
and jongho is so pretty??? this hair suits him so much
i got a uquiz
did we….did we manifest this

LMAO I truly don't mind the long messages! I'm a fairly straightforward person, They're fun! I have no idea who would read through them other than us so 🤷🏻‍♀️
I don't mean to break anyone's heart but my own! LOL - realistically and with my luck when it comes to BTS, I've just never had a good experience trying to see them. I do wish anyone else all the best though - you included!!!
I think if the audience is 21+, I can do GA 😂 I went to see Epik High recently and most of the audience were in their 20s or older, so it was less chaotic. Not to be that adult LOL, but sometimes, the younger fans are kinda wildin' and disrespectful 😅 Epik High isn't like one of my favorite favorite groups (they were my intro into Kpop), so I wasn't expecting myself to be knocked off my feet, but I was LOL! It was just like fun and chill vibes. I feel like the audience can really make or break your experience.
I'm so glad you had a good time at The Link!!! Even if they didn't do their new album, still sounds like the song selection was pretty good???
Great minds just think alike!!! 🤣😂 No shame at all - if Yangyang's part made you flustered, then he did his job and that is not a bad thing LOL 🤣 Imo, Yangyang is just really dorky and endearing - not necessarily in like a "must protecc" kind of way, but he just makes me a giggly at the dumbest things I normally wouldn't AHAHA. OKAY! Confession - Xiaojun is very much like . . . my type when it comes to who in a group I fall for first LOL. I love his brows, he sings super well with his pretty low ranges, and at least from what we can tell he has a fun personality hahaha.
I'll check out some of the songs you have down for ATEEZ and get back to you!! Screenshotted and will queue them up~ I do listen to Wave, Turbulence, MIST, Light, and Promise regularly!!!
Omg omg omg omg!!! My turn to go wild!! LOL. So long story, short when it comes to SVT: I was a casual fan for a long time, but only started during L&R era. I'm embarrassed to admit, but the combo of Kidult and Mingyu really shoved me to explore their discography (and them as a group LOL) further 😂😅 All this to say, I've only been a carat for ~3-ish years now, so I'm sure there are other ppl who can give you a more seasoned and in-depth look into their discography, but I'll make a separate post sharing my favorite pieces from them! Noted about HHU - Wonwoo/Mingyu were 2 of my very first biases, so I definitely have stuff for you LOL.
RED VELVET MY GIRLS!!!! In my humble opinion, their concept is so timeless - I hope they last a long time 🥺 I definitely went through a Taeyeon phase as well a few years ago (was it really a few or more? T^T) LOL. Why is still my favorite from her!!
The way I was just vibrating when you mentioned StayC LOL - I have friend who LOVES them with all her heart and it's so cute and fun to see y'all be big fans of them!! I did listen to YOUNG-LUV.COM and agree so much!!! I think Young Luv was definitely in my Top 10 most played on Spotify this year hahaha.
LSFM is probably my second most favorite gg after Red Velvet 🥺😭 I mostly started following because I wanted to support Yunjin who I've been keeping my eye out for since her green melona basement room days 😭 (yes, the same one as SVT LMAO). She used to be a Pledis trainee, but then got bounced around a lot between different agencies because she never quite fit any of the concepts. It warmed my heart when she debuted after almost giving up! I ended up really liking LSFM overall after watching their docu-series and then the Anti-Fragile comeback! Blue Flame and No Celestial have a chokehold on me hahaha.
Have you heard Lovin' Me by Fifty Fifty!!!?? I think you might like it a lot!!! I have no idea who they are either lmao, but I really liked that one!! 100/10 would recommend checking out XG - I think they have something a little different to offer the kpop gg scene and it's refreshing! They're latest comeback was really good 🤩
I listen to all the other gg's you listed as well casually LOL, but I'll stop here since I don't have anything else to add hahahaha.
Please look foward to the SVT playlist AAAHHH hahahaha - I love doing things like this 😍🥰
Thank you for the well-wishes 🥺 It's kind of intimidating bc some ppl in my life aren't being the most supportive, but I'm the slightest bit hopeful, it'll work out okay for me in the end :')
AFTER ALL SVT SAID FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE 😂💀😎
Hm, ok you've got me considering GA for real, because there are a few artists I've skipped out on because the venue is only GA 😭...but like maybe this is a me problem but all of the concerts I go to definitely attract lots of under 21 so...💀😂
As an Ateez MIST enthusiast (like personally that's one of my top top top faves from them), I love that you like that song! And omg a fellow stayc girl YESSSSS lol. Blue Flame by LSFM is so great too, and I believe they're about to release a whole album in May so look forward to that! I will def be tuning in! Will definitely check out XG and that song you mentioned from Fifty Fifty as well!
Length of time doesn't matter!!! I've been an Atiny for the same amount of time! Very much looking forward to your SVT playlist!
~Fight for your life~ friend!!!

ok bgs- nct, atz, enha, blank2y, &team, txt, oneus, cravity, bts, treasure, tnx, seventeen, exo, wei, victon, e’last, xdheroes, skz, onlyoneof, ab6ix and p1h
ggs- g-idle, aespa, twice, itzy, nmixx, ive, lessrafim, newjeans, kepler, pixy, purple kiss, red velvet, snsd and lapillus
phew 😭😮‍💨
Oooooo awesome!!! Alright alright let's see here~
I am more of a bg fan in general so probably know more of those..
NCT? Hell yeah. Don't know enough of the subgroups though tbh. Resonate? Badass. Kick it? Whoo! Make a wish? This is actually how I first found them!! so coooooooollllll. Boss? Rocking. Regular and love talk?? English AND korean versions??? Oh my lord. Also more sexy than they are allowed to be. Baby don't stop is where I first saw Ten whom became my bias! Nct Dream is the only subgroup I happened to follow more closely because I got so hooked on the hello future album. But 127 and U are probably my favourites overall. You could say I just love their badass vibes and how they drop beats. Definitely some of my favourite songs 💯👌🏻
ATEEZ?! I MEAN HELL YEAH 😆 definitely my ult group- found them through Hala Hala and have been hooked ever since. Best bois. Amazing music. Love it.
Enha - does that stand for enhypen? In which case hell yea! I followed then since debut, probably like most people atm since they are so new, and think they are so cute! But so young! Babies! I wish them all the best :) Sunoo is the cutest ray of sunshine though.
Blank2y and &Team - no clue! Lemme listen to some... blank2y sounds cool, I know a lot of people who happen to be into &Team, now I know what they mean :)
Txt - I know they have a lot of hype about them but I'm not THAT deeply into them. Some nice music though, Kai is adorable. Am currently learning good boy gone bad choreo :)
Oneus - back in college a friend introduced me into them through Valkyrie and that song still lives in my mind!!!
Cravity- again I know people who love them but I don't know them all that well, but I love cloud 9.
Bts - well everyone knows them by now!
Treasure - ooooohhh! So I love the versatility of my three fave songs of them! I found them first through treasure, lovely and happy! Then Jikjin - ma gawd can I rave to that. And I love hello because it is such a happy choreo to dance! Wheey!
TNX - never heard of them, but I dig the way they drop beats! I'll listen to them more :)
Seventeen - great! Love the members, great music, always great albums and themes and looks!
Exo - such a legend. So many good songs. Love them.
Wei - also not known, but it sounds well made!
Viction - yet another group I hear a lot about, but don't know much of. As I'm listening - I didn't know Mayday was theirs, nice!
E`last - dangerous is very cool!
Xdheroes - is a bit of a hit or miss for me, I dig their songs but some take such funky twists that they kind of lose me halfway through.
Skz - badass, they write great songs, 3racha is badass, they really have awesome rappers. Bang chan is such a cute leader, the Aussies are adorable with their accents and Felix's low voice is legendary. All great guys 💯 arguably the group I know second best after ATEEZ.
OnlyOneOf- libido is one of my guilty pleasures to listen to for sure. I love their daringness and energy and performance. My first reaction tho was 'omg they look so young, are they even consenting adults. Is is okay for me to look at them?' Only to find out they are all a minimum of three years older than me lol. They look like babies :) as long as they feel comfortable doing wat they are doing and not pressured - I'll support them!
Ab6ix is awesome, they deserve more love! Love their rapping skills and vibes. Their music always makes me happy and groovy!
P1h - Keeho LOL legend. Great music too though, very badass vibes. Makes you feel cool hehe.
//I'm gonna split it here cuz lord this is getting long sorry aksjdjs

So if warden wrath sat younger luz and hunter do older luz and hunter ever sit or watch his son perhaps as he listens to stories at the library from amity
Aw man. As much as the library thing is a cute visual, I don't think they would have ever watched Braxus simply because of how inefficient the whole situation would be – by the time Luz and Hunter are probably old enough to be watching little kids, they're probably more swamped with work as GGs than Wrath himself.
Adding onto that, I don't think Luz and Hunter would've interacted with the outside world very much. They're extremely sheltered, and were probably encouraged (if not outright ordered) to stay in the coven-affiliated areas as much as possible when they were younger. Why go to the public library when the castle library has everything the other one has and more?

anevka meeting vader? going feral over how shitty his suit is?
Listen I just. I have had this daydream before. It doesn’t end well.
Anevka would hit on him. This is irrefutable to me. She would see this older man in shitty armor missing 65% of his body, full of rage and murder and quite a lot of grief, and go “I want to tap that.” Tap what? Unclear. Neither of them has genitals anymore.
The main problem would be ‘would Anevka be able to hit on Vader without getting murdered for the perceived offense to Padme,’ which like. Maybe? If Palpatine told Vader to play nice with the GG folks, I can see him putting up with her being... uh... herself.
imo Anevka is very much the kind of person who spouts off ‘dear’ and ‘darling’ to people she only sort of knows in the effort to piss them off while they can’t argue with her, but also she might try to convince him to fugue with her? She can’t enter fugue, because she no longer has a brain capable of producing those chemicals, and he’s not a GG native, so he’s clearly not a spark, but it’s GG tradition that flirtation is doing the science.
But you know who’s still a spark? Anevka’s brother. You know who built that sleek and sexy robot body? Anevka’s brother. You know who not only can but will enter a fugue on her request to fix this mess of an armored suit? Anevka’s brother.
“Oh, Tarvek dear, would you just look at the wretched pistons on this leg! It’s as if the maker was trying to make his gait ungainly enough to cause hip pain. Vader, darling, just take a seat and we’ll figure out a way to fix this, it’ll be so much better once we’re done, and I’m sure Tarvek wouldn’t mind trying to figure out a way to include a death ray or three.”
“Why did you volunteer me for this? Anevka, why did you volunteer me to help this guy, I have things to do and I don’t even like him.”
“Of course, brother, but his mask is attached by needles in his face.”
“...who the blazes designed this?”
Would Vader put up with this? Unclear. If he’s been in GG for more than a day or two, he might get swept up in the fugue because lbr in a fusion universe, the fugue would definitely involve the Force and it’s really hard to resist and Anakin’s whole thing with droids is as close to a mechanics spark as SW gets, so he might just slip in on that and, lbr, it’s funnier if he goes along just long enough to realize this is a good thing. It’s probably out of character but it’s funny so I don’t care.
He did not intend to! But sparks. Sparks are weird. He put up with Weird Lady Grievous-Expy because Palpatine said he had to, and by the time he noticed that adjustments were being made to his suit, it was too late to stop and they were helping, so like.............

Hunting Palismen Thoughts
y'all I absolutely loved this episode
oh we're JUMPING right in with day of unity stuff huh. we didn't go from 0 to 10 we started at 10.
anyways, starting off, this whole thing is fascinating to me. I mean this literally looks like a small human city. who are the worthy that get to live here according to belos. if its a unification of the realms, what happens to the humans? do they live here too? how does this affect society?? so many questions
Tumblr media
kiki is pissed and im starting to predict that the reason Lilith, GG, and Kiki were all apart of the same slide in the title isn't because Lilith will slide backwards like some were worried about, but that all three of them are people who will have betrayed the emperor at some point
what the fuck is belos. the thumping/punching he made was in time with the beat of a heart. makes me think of the heart behind his throne and how are they connected.
UNCLE?? OUR FAMILY IS GONE BECAUSE OF WILD MAGIC??
TITLE CARD CHANGES AHHH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh im so worried amity's not there because her mom's mad about her hair. that being said, some of the students here I assumed were a bit older (like jerbo and viney) and ed & em also aren't here. could potentially be that their parents didn't want any of them involved with this palismen adoption? or maybe im trying hard to be hopeful she's not in huge trouble over the hair
FREWIN!! this is the outcome for the little guy in Bump's head is better than anything I could've thought of. Aside from his legitimate use of helping Bump see, I am curious though if this is a bit of a "hidden in plain sight" kind of thing as well to protect the little guy.
PALISMAN ADOPTION DAY!! I WAS RIGHT!! I guessed the forest palismen would get adopted and I'm so glad about it.
I love Eda's blazer. She's trying to look professional. I love that this is what she planned on her favor from BQ being. Just to help out some young witches and some lost palismen. She cares so much 🥺
ok but if the unification of the realms does end up happening, I totally see Gus being an ambassador to the human realm.
There's a lot of attention of Luz here, and I'm just imagining how a similar situation might've gone down on the human realm. I don't blame her for getting anxious here, because I feel like in the past attention like this would've gone far worse at her school. I appreciate that most people here are just calm asking questions that are intended to help (except you Boscha) or Eda just checking in on her.
"I've read stories like this, the main character always has to return home" very interesting. seeing how this show has emphasized how life isn't like fiction.
Eda's just listening in like a mom concerned about her child
Tired Luz is adorable.
LMAO WHY IS GG WHISTLING THE THEME SONG
These two have such an insane amount of sibling energy I love it. This situation? Me and my brothers have done this way too many times.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
uh so can a coven mark actually be removed?? since the EC one is also on the wrist but Lilith definitely hasn't been seen with anything there? that's kind of a relief since I was worried that since coven marks can help control magic that her still having one could be bad for her
Tumblr media
It's not unsurprising that GG, as a powerless witch, would be interested in wild magic and Luz's glyphs. the kind of stuff you don't need a bile sac for. that kinda sucks he knows there's something out there he probably could use, but isn't allowed to do so
Hunter!! I don't need to do a name meaning here this one's obvious. Also, this boy's gonna crack and swap sides I can tell.
This is the most shit-eating grin I think I've ever seen on Eda. She's so proud of herself and she should be!
Tumblr media
I also love this because we literally started this show with Luz helping Eda and King rob the conformatorium, and now we're at King and Eda robbing somewhere to do something special for Luz 🥺
Kiki and GG are so petty with each other, it's not just Kiki and Lilith. This is the whole workplace dynamic isn't it.
GG's room design definitely came from the Lilith bedroom design didn't it. Also I love the little Sprig plush!! I think that's a Big City Greens reference in there too but I've never watched that show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am very concerned about him and this palisman too. Not about him but just about Belos finding the palisman.
My one other thing I wanted to mention is I definitely feel like I'm seeing more and more disability metaphor in the show. If we see Eda's curse and her subsequent loss of a power as a disability, then GG/Hunter being born without magic could be considered a disability too. He's only been given access to one way of doing magic and it seems to limit him, he's being cut off from a different way of doing magic, the glyphs that Eda is learning, which clearly seem to be able to allow the user to do magic almost anywhere and could be more effective than Belos' artificial magic.
I'm also curious about Bump, he has the kind of palisman Belos wants to do away with, but it's not just a way to do magic for him. It's an aide for his vision. Belos' ideals would also be taking away something from him or other witches who may also be using their palismen as an aide.

updated top albums list + recommended tracks from each bc im bored lol
*tentatively* in order
unnatural - wjsn | recommended songs: all of them (especially unnatural, supermoon, and yalla) except for rewind | skips: just rewind bc ballad /// im not sure what style to call this album but they really made such a smash, its crazy that it came out so early in the year and no gg is touching it (album wise). literally the only complaints i have are the obligatory ballad (that they always do bc they can all sing lmfao), the album cover/title (dont love the cover design and i dont love when the album name is the tt name, except in certain circumstances (a full album (especially where the title isnt necessarily from the title track) like montero) or when it's a single album (the inverse of this being rsq's prequel which couldve just been called colorfull since that was the only damn song 😐)). i also was disappointed with the outfits for last dance but that's peripheral.
timeabout, - yukika | recommended songs: insomnia & secret | skips: none /// okay to keep it very real im genuinely scared that she'll never surpass soul lady. i love, and i mean LOVE timeabout, but soul lady was on another plane of existence. like she could've held that album a little bit
the other side of the moon - gwsn | recommended songs: like it hot, starry night, i cant breathe | skips: i sing, depending on my mood /// i dont have much commentary tbh, this is just a very solid mini idk. id like to see a fusion of i cant breathe/tweaks/after the bloom/burn, maybe on their next mini. i love their brighter stuff but maybe a darker concept next (halloween cb pls pls pls)
montero - lil nas x | lowkey too soon for me to pick recommended songs but i'll say montero, scoop, lost in the citadel, sun goes down, and am i dreaming for now. will update! | skips: none /// i cant say that this is this year's sawayama bc sawayama was kinda more like a collection of really strong singles? whereas i feel like these songs shine as an album. i dont even know what to say except that im soooo surprised and impressed because i didnt know that this is the type of music he made???? like he raps but theres a lot of singing? not like belting but definitely not rapping. its kinda...alt ish? in some places? if i had to use ine genre to describe the whole album id probably say alt pop? idk but whatever it is it's definitely working
hide & seek - purple kiss | recommended songs: zombie & so why (tbh all of them) | 2am and zzzz depend on my mood but theyre def not full skips /// no bad song on the album this is crazy....i might rerank since i just listened to it for the first time but as of now idk, its good im just super impressed. ponzona wasnt for me but this cb theyre really doing all the things, lovr tht for them
produced by: [myself] - onlyoneof | recommended songs: coy & night flight | question mark depends on my mood /// im still mad at them (read: 8d) sooooo...idk. i can’t really listen to their music rn. but this mini is still good
play game: holiday - weeekly | recommended songs: check it out, weekend, holiday party | i like memories of summer rain and la luna but it depends on my mood /// very cohesive mini, def their best overall imo! not much to say, but i hope jiyoon gets well soon TTTT
enchant - orbit | recommended songs: gokurakuchouka & never gonna get away but also all of them except flor lunar | skips: flor lunar is nice but boring /// i need kpoppies to get into it im tired of being here alone cmon y’all
set - woodz | recommended songs: feel like | skips: none /// i prefer his bright tracks but this mini was solid as usual. where is the full album tho seungyoun hmmm????
guess who - itzy | recommended songs: sorry not sorry, tennis (0:0), kidding me | skips: in the morning, occasionally wild wild west /// i remember being very surprised that i liked this album, especially given that i dont like mitm. not anything groundbreaking but still solid. i think the naming of tennis (0:0) was really clever
intersection: trace - bae173 | recommended songs: green light, loved you | skips: none (sometimes the intro tho) /// honestly their music is really good??? mbk just hasn’t promoted them well, i feel like they make it a little hard to stan...i really appreciate that they’re not doing the stereotypical hard bg concept thing
lilac - iu | recommended songs: coin, flu, ah puh, troll | skips: honestly id have to relisten, some of the songs a lil boring but idr them at the moment
hello future - nct dream | recommended songs: hello future, life is still going on | skips: idr tbh, probably hot sauce though //// was very surprised that i liked this album, but the outro of hello future really got me after a few listens so i had to check it out. very decent!
killa - mirae | recommended songs: killa, sweet dreams, 1 thing | skips: none really but all of the bsides are a little mid tbh /// i will be 1000% honest in saying that the three reasons this allbum made this list are 1.) killa (the tt), 2.) none of the songs are bad, 3.) lien’s vocals. something about lien....he really just sells whatever song he’s on. his belting >>>>>>>>>>>. he makes their music very enjoyable to listen to, next in that department would be junhyuk. based on their most recent cb, siyoung and khael also contribute a lot as well. shame that the rest of the cb album kinda does nothing for me idk. random but i would really like a gg to cover higher and/or killa
& - loona | recommended songs: ur, ptt | skips: a different night, dance on my own /// these r my girls but this is not their best. ur is wonderful though, and ptt is addicting somehow. wow and be honest are fine but really not their best. i like wow’s choreo tho!
albums im excited to listen to (no particular order):
last year was weird volume 3, tkay maidza (i’ve already listened to a bunch of it but i need to sit and just listen to the whole thing)
troubled paradise, slayyter (same as above, but i didn’t even realize it came out this year, i thought it was old for some reason lol)
jo1, challenger (every song of theirs i hear i like pretty much so i need to take an organized look at them lmfao)
jo1, stranger (same as above)
only lovers left, woodz (duhhh its woodz. not out yet but im excited! i do prefer his brighter concepts and this def isn’t that. he says its not gonna be like what he’s done before but the title and concept photo that’s out rn is giving lift up)
the book of us: negentropy - chaos swallowed up in love, day6 (the title kinda bored me but we’ll see. also sungjin’s gone so.....................we’ll see.)
ancient dreams in a modern land, marina (i barely got past venus fly trap because its soooooo good. i’ve listened to a little after that but the songs i heard didn’t really compare. i have to give it a shot tho)
the chaos chapter: fight or escape, txt (i liked the blue hour mini so i need to give them a chance i suppose)
333, tinashe (i just feel like i should idk)
honorable mentions (no particular order):
blue hour, txt - discovered this year, came out last year. retroactively makes the 2020 albums list bc whew the market research that went into that thing paid off
hula hoop/ starseed ~kakusei~, loona (why tf does the album not have a name) - duhhh loona + synths = a smash. in fact like i said when it dropped i dont even wanna call them loona anymore. this is kongetsu no shoujo!!! this isn’t on my top albums list because im counting as two songs and my limit is 3. i might add it anyways lmfao. we’ll see
ugly beauty, jolin tsai - discovered this year, came out in 2018. i just really like jolin tsai idk. i had only heard that album w play and i’m not yours, both are iconic but the production quality sounds...low? like its older but ik they’re not *that* old. either way, ugly beauty does everything i wanted it to - dramatic, vocals, rapping, boa vibes...jolin tsai is a queen what can i say
also, there are of course a ton of singles that i love as well, this is albums only though lmfao. i have no idea if i could even attempt to organize the singles lol

the rest of my answers under the cut hehet
Get to Know Me Uncomfortably Well (kpop edition)
Do you have any irl friends that like kpop?
Yeah! Almost all my irl friends like kpop.
How old were you when you first got into kpop?
I was 18.
What song(s) took you a while to warm up to?
SuperM’s Jopping for sure, SNSD’s I Got a Boy too. Both songs took me a while to jam to them.
Have you ever disliked a group/idol? If so, why? (You don’t have to say who it is if you’re scared of getting hate).
Oh yeah. There are a few idols that I get really shady vibes from? Mostly because they do seem fake / unrelatable whatsoever / act all superior than everybody else.
What do you love the most about kpop?
I love the makeup, and I love the creative concepts aside from the songs and how the idols experiment with genres and musical styles.
Do you only listen to kpop?
No. I do listen to a lot of indie/alternative stuff, half of which are from OSTs. I do owe my love for indie/alternative music to my high school classmates - my lab partner has epic musical taste and is creative AF.
Who are you favorite western artists (if you have any)?
Arctic Monkeys, The Kills, The Kinks, Franz Ferdinand, Stars, The Strokes, Bloc Party, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Neon Trees. That’s... all I can think of so far.
How long have you been into kpop?
By September this year, lets just say I’ve been in kpop for a looooong time. 2nd-gen fan over here!
What music did you used to listen to before getting into kpop?
Indie/alternative. I also listened to a lot of the local music.
What fandom(s) were you in before getting into kpop? Are you still in them?
Ooh! I am still quite a Potterhead for sure. Gossip Girl too - I wrote fics on both fandoms... which are in fanfiction . net. Twilight too? sorta kinda. I’m not into Gossip Girl or Twilight anymore.
Which group did you used to think was overrated but ended up loving?
I... don’t think I can answer that. hehehet.
Is there a kpop song that annoys you? If so, which one?
Usually the overly cutesy songs annoy me, I can’t really specify but yeah, the overly cutesy songs where the singers kind of have to sing/rap in that cutesy voice just ugh, no.
What aspects of kpop make you cringe/feel secondhand embarrassment?
Again, the overly cute songs/concepts that seem to cater to dirty older people... Even more if the choreography matches that. UGH.
Which concepts do you love?
I am a sucker for supernatural / fantasy concepts or movie-inspired ones. Futuristic ones too. 2NE1 and f(x)’s street styles are also A+ for me. VIXX’s concepts from vampires to zombies to androids is hella cool (they’re the standard tbh). EXO’s aliens with superpowers concept is amazing af too. Groups that also show mature concepts as they get older is also A+ for me.
Which concepts do you hate?
I really don’t like again, the overly cutesy concepts. There’s a level of sexy that I just don’t like either. Those are skips for me.
What do you look for in a bias?
Ooh, looking at my biases, I usually go for vocalists for some reason. Minhyun’s a vocalist, Yunho’s a vocalist, Jaehyun’s a vocalist, Woong is a vocalist. Leo is a vocalist.
Which kpop company do you hate the most?
Probably right now, I can only think of YG. YG himself has this god complex over his artists - YGTB was one whole-ass example of him demonstrating that rules don’t apply to him. Also, YG disbanded 2NE1 and threw Bom under the bus. Like nah, you can’t do that to my queens/role models.
What are you opinions on shipping?
Like before I was like “yessss i ship this one and this one and this one” but then now I just think it’s okay as long as fans don’t take it too far and make such a big deal out of it. Like yeah, we know they’re good friends, you don’t need to sexualize everything they do/every interaction they have.
How did you get into kpop?
Funny story! I was crying in college because the guy I liked said I wasn’t his type. It also happened to be the birthday of a friend of mine. When I got home, i remembered one of my high school friends telling me to listen to Sorry Sorry and I got hooked ever since.
Has anyone ever made fun of you or looked at you weird for liking kpop?
No, not really. I gave them the stinkeye if they did.
What is the cringiest thing you did when you were starting to get into kpop?
AH. Too many to mention.
How long does it take you to learn the names of each member in a group?
It took me days to learn Super Junior. But I don’t think I really count? But I know it just usually takes me days to learn names of members in a group.
Are you a gg, bg, or middle/coed stan?
Mostly boy groups.
I only listen to 2 girl groups - 2NE1 and f(x) but I only anticipate their music, nothing more than that tbh.
If you could hang out with one idol, who would you hang out with?
Jaehyun (NCT). We’d totally spend the day listening to his records and binge classic movies. Either him or Seonghwa tbh.
Who is the bias to your third favorite group?
Third favorite group? Minhyun. or Jaehyun (NCT). Both NUEST and NCT are tied.
What name from your native language would you give your ult bias?
Nothing has crossed my mind. HAHAHA
Thought on fanfiction/AUs/etc?
I write fanfiction, I write AUs. I’m honestly not into member X member fics unless it’s platonic. As for smut, as long as it’s not too detailed and some details are left to the imagination then I’m good with it. I’m very picky with certain aus tho (mafia) but i don’t like werewolf aus / too much bad boy! member.

Sugar Bowls theory
This is part 9 of the Strange Interpretation of Jean Lúcio from Brazil
To understand this text, it is necessary to read some my previous texts.
Strange interpretation of Jean Lúcio about ASOUE — Lemony Snicket's Narration from a Culturally...
There are two sugar bowls that are being sought after by Lemony Snicket and his supporters.
In the letter in chapter 10 of TSS, Lemony wrote:
“I have at last learned the whereabouts of the evidence that will exonerate me, a phrase which here means "prove to the authorities that it is Count Olaf, and not me, who has started so many fires." Your suggestion, so many years ago at that picnic, that a tea set would be a handy place to hide anything important and small in the event of a dark day, has turned out to be correct.”
I believe there are already many theories evidencing that the contents of the sugar bowl is some kind of audio record. And I can say that I fully agree that the sugar bowl that Lemony was looking for many years after the main events certainly contained some kind of media that supports information, and that an audio record is most likely.
Besides, when Mr. Helquist was at Beatrice's house while the fire was being fought, he noticed that there was an incomplete set of tea among the wreckage.
Chapter 11 TUA - “I tried to site for a moment and draw some of the objects that lay in rubble - a glass bottle, portions of a grand piano, a few charred pieces of green wood, he remains of a tea set.”
Probably what was missing was exactly a sugar bowl. This was not the sugar bowl that belonged to Esmé. Beatrice stole from Esmé only the sugar bowl, not the whole tea set. Mr. Helquist probably saw the whole set of tea, except a sugar bowl.
When Lemony wrote the letter, he believed the record would show that it was Count Olaf who set off the fires. But of course, the record will show the truth, whatever it is. Whether it was Count Olaf or someone else, Lemony only found out when that record was available. In another text I will write what I believe that Lemony discovered when he listened to the recording. But now I must answer another question: What was in the sugar bowl that belonged to Esmé?
The Sugar Bowl that belonged to Esmé did not contain a recording. All the evidence indicates that the contents of this sugar bowl granted the person who carried the sugar bowl some kind of power. A power that could be used for evil.
Kit explained it in TPP chapter 2:
“The sugar bowl is on its way to the hotel even as we speak, and I'd hate to think what would happen if our enemies got ahold of it. I can't imagine anything worse, except perhaps if our enemies somehow got ahold of the Medusoid Mycelium."
Secondly, the content of the sugar bowl is somewhat shameful for the "noble" side of VFD. It is something regarded as a secret. It is something as shameful as the fact that it was the "noble" side of VFD that grew the MM fungus.
But why is this shameful? Because it is a proof of the hypocrisy of the "noble" side of VFD. In the case of MM fungus, it is a great hypocrisy that an organization that preaches peace at the same time develops a biological weapon of mass destruction.
Windershins explained in TGG, chapter 4:
“that sonar detector is like our cave wall, showing us the shape of things much more powerful and terrifying." "… "I don't want you to understand, … That's why I haven't told you why the sugar bowl is so very crucial. There are secrets in this world too terrible for young people to know, even as those secrets get closer and closer.”
In fact, just knowing the contents of the sugar bowl can be dangerous for a young member of the noble party of VFD. Winddershins explained:
TGG chapter 6: "It's not the sugar bowl, it's what's inside it." Aye! I've already said too much! There are secrets in this world too terrible for young people to know! Just think – if you knew about the sugar bowl and you somehow fell into Count Olaf's clutches, there's no telling what he'd do! Aye!"
Probably, if a young man or woman discovered the sugar bowl and then fell into Count Olaf's clutches, this young man or woman could come to support Olaf because he would be convinced that the "noble" side of VFD is not at all noble. Older people would already understand how the world works, and so they could understand that sometimes noble people need to get their hands dirty for a greater good.
Now that we know there were two sugar bowls, we need to think, how did they both get to the hotel? One of the sugar bowls you should know has arrived by means of crows. This sugar bowl probably fell into the pond in front of the hotel when one of the crows was struck by a harpoon. This sugar bowl stayed in the secret library for many, many years until Lemony came to the hotel between the time he was writing TGG and TPP. But how did the Esmé sugar bowl come to the hotel? Where did this sugar bowl come from and where did it go?
The TSS book shows that the sugar bowl was in the VFD HQ. But two volunteers threw the sugar bowl out the window, and left a message about the object inside the refrigerator.
Who was the recipient of the message? JS. What is the content of the message?
"JS, there will be a gathering on Thursday. There is a message for you on the final quatrain of the eleventh stanza of" The Garden of Proserpine, "by Algernon Charles Swinburne." A piece of paper that contained the part of the poem lay nearby: "That no life lives forever; That dead men rise up never; That even the weariest river Winds somewhere safe to sea." On the same paper was written Sugar bowl.
Lemony explained what the last part of the poem meant:
"Eventually, however, it became clear that" the weariest river "refers to the Stricken Stream, which indeed seemed to carry away from the ashes from the destruction of VFD headquarters, and that" winds somewhere safe to sea "refers to the last safe place where all the volunteers, including Quigley Quagmire, could gather. "
Thus, the secret message indicated to JS that the sugar bowl had been launched in the Stricken Stream. And of course, anyone who knows the water cycle, would deduce that the sugar bowl would end up somewhere in the sea.
You must remember, that while Klaus was at Queequeg, he was able to calculate accurately that the sugar bowl went into the GG. That's where things get interesting. After Klaus passed the information to Windershins, Klaus, Violet, Sunny and Fiona slept. Several hours passed. (TGG chapter 5). Finally the submarine arrived at Gorgonian Grotto, but could not advance much inside the GG. Winddershinhs explained:
"the cave got narrower and narrower as we maneuvered further and further inside ... The entrance was the wide end of the cone,
but now it's too narrow for the submarine to travel. If we want to we will have to use something smaller ...
Periscope? "Sunny asked." No, "Captain Widdershins replied." A child. "
This means that a person of tall stature would not be able to walk in the narrowest part of GG. Winddershins was of tall stature, and so he could not go get the sugar bowl. He had to send the teens and sunny to get the sugar bowl. However, this group of young people searched for a long time and did not find the sugar bowl there in GG. Why not? There was one more person in GG that day. Notice what is written in TGG chapter 6:
"They had gazed upward and seen the sharp angles of various vertical flame diversions and other secret passageways Once again, she was led to the marine research center and rhetorical advice service, or even spotted the person who was using one of the passageways now, and probably for the last time, as she made her difficult and dark way toward the Queequeg. instead, all the children could see through their small circular windows was darkness. "
Thus, a person passed in the dark by the young group. They were going to GG. But this woman went down the secret tunnels that linked AA to GG. She certainly found the sugar bowl, and headed toward the Queequeg. She passed the Baudelaires and Fiona in the darkness and made her way to the Queequeg. This woman convinced Winddershins and Phill to leave Queequeg.
It was probably Windershins himself who sent the telegram to this woman, informing her that the sugar bowl was in GG. He must have kept this telegram while the children were asleep. The mysterious woman went down the secret tunnel, using this tunnel for the last time according to Lemony, and went to the submarine.
Lemony wrote the following in Chapter 13 of TGG:
“In the final analysis...Captain Widdershins was wrong about a great many things... He was wrong to abandon the Queequeg, no matter what He heard from the woman who came to fetch him.”
When the children returned from GG to Queequeg, the submarine had not been captured by Carmelita submarine. However, Phil and Widdershins had already disappeared.
Chapter 8 of TGG describes:
The Baudelaire orphans knew that something was wrong the moment they arrived at the submarine, knocked on the metal hatch, and heard no answer from the captain inside... After knocking for several minutes, the worried children had to open the hatch by themselves, a difficult task in the dark, and enter the passageway, quickly closing the hatch behind them... The Baudelaires looked around the room, but it seemed as empty and lonely as the grotto. Without the enormous presence of Captain Widdershins – "enormous presence" is a phrase which here means "large physical size, combined with a vibrant personality and loud voice" – the Main Hall seemed utterly deserted. Fiona took a step toward the door to the kitchen, but then stopped and looked at the wooden table. "Their helmets are gone," she said. "Both Phil and my stepfather were keeping their diving helmets on the table, in case of an emergency." She ran her hand along the table, as if she could make the helmets reappear. "They're gone," she said. "They've left the Queequeg."
The children began to wonder why Widdershins and Phil left the Queequeg. But what they should ask themselves is this: "Where were Winddershins and Phil gone?" Dear reader, let us reason together. We know that the Queequeg was at the bottom of the ocean. We know there were three people in the Queequeg: Winddershins, Phil, and a mysterious, short-stature woman. Winddershins did not go up to AA through secret tunnels because according to Lemony, the last time the tunnels were used was when the mysterious woman went down one of the tunnels and went to the GG and from there to the Queequeg. Besides, Windershins was too tall. They did not go to the Carmelita because this submarine had not yet captured the Quequeeg yet. They wore their wetsuits to leave the Queequeg. Did they decide to swim from the bottom of the ocean to the shore? That would not be possible. Even the Queequeg, which was a motorized submarine, took about a day or two for the Queequeg to reach the coast. And when the Queequeg got there, Kit said she was going to meet Winddershins who had already reached the coast.
My theory is this:
The contents of the sugar bowl that belonged to Esmé was a small musical instrument (probably a whistle) capable of controlling the Great Unknown. The short woman picked up the sugar bowl at GG, swam to the submarine, and persuaded Phil and Winddershins to leave the Queequeg in the mouth of the Great Unknown. (I believe the Great Unknown is a very large and very fast marine beast).
You must remember that the Sinister Duet use whistles to control their eagles. This is evidence that many ferocious VFD-related animals can be controlled by sounds. You should also remember that the Sinister Duet uses the eagles as a means of transportation. Similarly, by means of a whistle, the Great Unknown can be controlled to transport people. Of course, it can also be invoked to kill people, and even destroy submarines. It is a kind of weapon. This fits perfectly with the fact that whoever owns the sugar bowl will have great power. And the ability to control well-trained fierce animals is one of the issues raised because of the VFD Great Schism. As the Sinister Duet said in TSS chapter 13:
"Look at these creatures!" cried the woman with hair but no beard. "When the schism occurred, you may have won the carrier crows, volunteers, and you may have won the trained reptiles... You may have the carrier crows, but we have the two most powerful mammals in the world to do our bidding – the lions and eagles!"
The more you think about this theory, the more it makes sense. For example, in TPP chapter 10, there is the scene of the mysterious taxi driver. Notice what Lemony wrote:
"I do know who the man was, and I do know where he went afterward, and I do know the name of the woman who was hiding in the trunk, and the type of musical instrument that was laid carefully in the back seat, and the ingredients of the sandwich tucked into the glove compartment, and even the small item that sat on the passenger seat, still damp from its hiding place."
The woman hiding in the trunk, must be the same mysterious Queequeg woman. The small item should be the sugar bowl that belonged to Esmé. This sugar bowl was taken to the hotel by this mysterious woman. And the musical instrument that was carefully placed on the back bench was the contents of the sugar bowl: a whistle, able to control The Great Unknown. (You can search, whistles are musical instruments).
There are more interesting evidences.
Winddershins made it appear that there was a connection between the sugar bowl and the Great Unknown in TGG, when GU first appeared on the radar. Recalling the words of him that I have already quoted in this text (TGG chap. 4):
"What was that third shape?" Violet asked. The captain shook his head again. "Something very bad," he said. "Even worse than Olaf, probably. I told you Baudelaires that there is evil you can not even imagine."
"We do not have to imagine it," Klaus said. "We saw it on the screen."
"That screen is nothing," the captain said. "It's just a piece of
equipment, aye? There was a philosopher who said that all of life is just shadows. He said that people were just sitting in the basement, watching shadows on the cave wall. Aye - shadows of something much bigger and grander than themselves. Well, that sonar detector is like our cave wall, showing us the shape of things much more powerful and terrifying. "
"I do not understand," Fiona said.
"I do not want you to understand," the captain said, putting his arm around her "That's why I have not told you why the sugar bowl is so crucial. There are secrets in this world too terrible for young people to know, even those secrets get closer and closer.
After that, at the end of TGG, after the Carmelita capture Queequeg, look what happened:
Chapter 13:
“The screen looked like a piece of graph paper, lit up in green light, and at the center were both a glowing letter Q, representing the Queequeg, and a glowing eye, representing the terrible octopus submarine that had devoured them. But at the top of the screen was another shape - one they had almost forgotten about. It was a long curved tube, with a small circle at the end of it, slithering slowly down the screen like a snake, or an enormous question mark, or some terrible evil the children could not even imagine.
"What's that cakesniffing shape?" asked Carmelita Spats. "It looks like a big comma."
"Shh!" Count Olaf hissed, putting his filthy hand over Carmelita's mouth. "Silence, everyone!"
"We have to get out of here," Esmé murmured. "This octopus is no match for that thing."
"You're right," Olaf muttered. "Esmé, go whip our rowers so they'll go faster! Hooky, store those uniforms! Triangle Eyes, take the orphans to the brig!"
"What about me?" Carmelita asked. "I'm the cutest, so I should get to something."
"I guess you'd better come with me," the count said wearily. "But no tap-dancing! We do not want to show up on their sonar!"
"Ta ta, cakesniffers!" Carmelita said, waving her pink wand at the three siblings.
"You're so stylish, darling," Esmé said. "It's like I always say: You can not be too rich or too in!"
The two wicked females jumped through the broken porthole and out of the Queequeg, followed by the hook-handed man, who gave the Baudelaires an awkward wave.”
According to my theory, the GU was around this point because Beatrice, Bill and Windershins had invoked T GU using the musical instrument (probably a whistle).
Olaf refers to the sonar that would be used by "them." This sonar should be a bio sonar, used by some animals for echolocation. Olaf uses the plural "their," because Olaf knows there is more than one animal that has the same shape. Although only one of them, I think, is trained by Lemony and his associates (Or Hangfire many years before).
It is interesting that Olaf and Esmé know that The GU has the ability to listen to low amplitude sounds. Some marine animals like dolphins and whales have bio sonar. Such animals need a good ear. In addition, the name given to the animal was probably Bombinating Beast. This means that the animal makes a sound while hunting. This sound can be used for echolocation
You must remember the scene where Kit comes to the beach. She told what happened:
TE chapter 13:
"We made a desperate attempt to repair the Queequeg and reach the Quagmires as their aerial battle continued, and arrived just in time to see the balloons of the self-sustaining hot air mobile home pop under the cruel beaks of the escaping eagles. They tumbled down to the surface of the sea, and crashed into the Queequeg. In moments we were all castaways, treading water in the midst of all the items that survived the wreck."... "What happened next?" "I don't know," Kit admitted. "From the depths of the sea a mysterious figute approached–almost like a question mark, rising out of the water." "We saw that on a radar screen," Violet remembered. "Captain Widdershins refused to tell us what it was."My brother used to call it 'The Great Unknown,... I was terrified, Baudelaires. Quickly I fashioned a Vaporetto of Favorite Detritus, as I'd been trained to do." ... I gathered all the books in reach that I enjoyed, tossing the boring ones into the sea, but everyone else wanted to take their chances with the great unknown. I begged the others to climb aboard as the question mark approached, but only Ink managed to reach me. The others ... " Her voice trailed off, and for a moment Kit did nothing but wheeze. "In an instant they were gone–either swallowed up or rescued by that mysterious thing." "You don't know what happened to them?" Klaus asked. Kit shook her head. "All I heard," she said, "was one of the Quagmires calling Violet's name." Sunny looked into the face of the distraught woman. "Quigley," the youngest Baudelaire could not help asking "or Duncan?" "I don't know," Kit said again.
Kit saw the Great Unknown, and she knew exactly what the Great Unknown was. Why did Kit wonder whether the others had been killed or not by the GU? Her doubt was whether the sugar bowl was in the hands of noble people or cruel people. Or if the GU was acting on his own, without any control. If the sugar bowl was not in the hands of noble people, death was certain. Why did Winddershins, who had shown fear in TGG of GU, now preferred to go to the GU despite Kit's insistence on him and the others fleeing? Winddershins knew that the ferocious beast was being controlled through the contents of the sugar bowl. He knew that the mysterious woman was inside the beast's mouth, and that the beast was there to save them.
Why did one of the Quaqmires shout out the name "Violet" when he was about to enter the GU? For when the beast opened its mouth, he saw a woman in the beast's mouth. A woman of short stature. A woman whose physical appearance was similar to Violet. So he found it very strange, and said "Violet?" But it was not Violet. She was just a woman very much like her ...

What I Watched As A 2015 Carat
So I was watching some old SVT videos, and realized there's probably a lot of older performances that newer Carats don't know about. But there's a lot of great stuff, so here's a handful of performance videos I watched way too many times as a Carat in 2015 (before we were called "Carats" 😂) that I don't really hear people talk about. I may add if I think of more, and you’re ofc welcome to reblog and add your own!
Everything's under the cut; there's links to vids and lil descriptions 🤗
Predebut
MV appearances: As trainees, some of the members were in other Pledis MVs. Here’s a handy video that a nice person on YouTube made: [x]
Action: Because Seventeen has a long history with NU’EST, they used to cover NU’EST songs a lot predebut, and i always really loved this performance in particular. (Also Jihoon looks like a scene kid and i appreciate it)
Hello (NU’EST Cover): Alright I’m adding this one asjdnaj I was only gonna put one NU’EST cover on the list, but then I rewatched this one for the first time in forever, and remembered how good it is
Call Me Maybe: Hey you wanna watch Wonwoo dance center with a girl to “Call Me Maybe” while wearing a distressed denim vest? Me too. (And yes, as ruetherae helpfully pointed out, the boys are dancing with some trainees who would go on to debut with Pristin!)
Money Money Money: This has Hoshi, Jihoon, Chan, and Vernon, and it's a predebut dance video that I really love and never hear people talk about
Seventeen Project
If you haven't watched Seventeen Project, you really should! I feel like as time’s gone on, less and less new fans have seen it. There's a lot of good stuff in there, it’s an important part of the boys’ history, and back in 2015 it was the main source of SVT content lmao I could list all of their performances on the show, but I won't~ But here's a few worth noting:
Taste + Bed Breaker (TBB): Still my favorite SVT choreo tbh
No F.U.N original: So they did a challenge where they were split into random groups, and they wrote and performed songs, all of which they've gone on the rearrange and release on an album at some point. No F.U.N was the winner of the challenge for a reason; the original performance is so good! Every album, fans would be begging for No F.U.N to be on it, and then finally it was 🙏
Hello original: i still prefer this version of "Hello". I LOVE the chorus, it just flows so much nicer. I'm sad they changed it when they rearranged it for the album. I think the pacing in the second half of the rearranged chorus makes it sound choppy and unnatural. If you haven't, give this one a listen and let me know what you think!
Drift Away original: This one's good, but I think they improved it a lot for the album
OMG original: I like this one as much as the performance unit version. I like the rap parts, the choreo, and i think Jihoon's voice suits the song particularly well.
2015
Shining Diamond MV: I wasn’t gonna put this on here bc I figured everyone’s seen it, but there’s less than 3 mil views, so maybe not?
Bindaetteok Gentleman: The performance that made me want to make this list! It's a cover of an old, funny Korean song, and the boys have some real handsome looks going~
Sorry Sorry: Seventeen's always been compared to and admired Super Junior, and the number of members mean they can pull off the choreo well. (Before I was a Carat, i was an ELF, so i would get VERY excited to see Seventeen performing any SJ songs lmao)
Adore U Vocal Unit Acoustic version: If you've only heard the vocal unit version of “Adore U” that's on "Love & Letter", you are MISSING OUT. The vocal unit put out this one during Adore U era, and Josh arranged it. I got so excited when I saw it on the L&L tracklist, then disappointed it wasn't the same. It's better imo 🤷 (also they're all rocking some major Boyfriend Looks™)
Adore U Performance Unit version: Hey this one's fun lmao It’s got some awesome choreo around the Pledis building and Josh randomly popping up with his guitar
MAMA 2015: Mansae: they worked the desks into the choreo so well and yooo that part where Hoshi jumps on the desks just as they push them together gets me every time, u gotta watch it
MAMA 2015: Monsta X Collab: MONTEEN MONTEEN MONTEEN I love Monteen, and this stage is great and often forgotten about
Soundcloud: Ah yes their Soundcloud! The boys still put stuff up there (like Dino’s & Minghao’s tracks), but if you haven’t gone back further and listened to their predebut stuff, you should~ (‘Wally’ and ‘Sunshine Remix’ with Yooara are personal favorites)
After 2015
Here's some more underrated performances that aren't from 2015, but seem to get forgotten a lot:
DOC 와 춤을: okay i used to watch this like every day ascvnk its so happy and everyone in the audience, whether they're a Carat or not, is having fun. Seventeen's always been great at covering old songs and GG songs in great and respectful ways, and this is just one of many. It’s impossible to watch it without smiling 😊💕
The Other GG Medley No One Talks About: SVT did a girl group medley on Music Core, and it’s really great, but they also did this one of some older girl group songs for Gayo Daejun in 2016 and no one talks about it but i like it a lot
The Cursed™ Sketchbook Performance: So for this appearance, fans in the audience weren't doing what they were told, and the boys suffered the consequences. So this performance gets pushed to the back of many Carats' minds. Repressed, if you will. But its a great performance! The boys put together a special stage just for the show, and despite everything, they worked hard and it deserves to be seen, and that's why i decided to add it.
Lastly, ik i said i would stick with performances, but i feel like new fans don't know this because he doesn't do it anymore. But jihoon used to dougie like all the time 😂 here's a couple vids: [x] [x]

Penpaling Chapter 1
October, 2017.
“Mom! Did I get any letters yet?” You asked, opening the front door.
“No honey. Sorry.” You murmured an ‘ok’. It was a long day so you made  yourself a cup of tea before retiring to your room.
You’ve been waiting for letters to arrive for almost a month. At least one would have arrived by then. You were recently intrigued with penpal letters by watching YouTube videos on them. One month ago you logged onto your Tumblr account and made an infinite amount of posts requesting penpals. You even went out to buy stationery, stickers and everything you can imagine to decorate them and make them look pretty. So far you’ve sent but not yet received.
***
“Oi Felix, you coming or not?” Chan settled himself on the chair of his studio as he stared at Felix who was playing on his phone. He eventually sat beside his friend and started at the computer screen.
“Are we really doing this?”
“Sure, why not?”
Tumblr, a magical and equally scary place that is the home of many fangirls. At least that’s the side they saw. After their first tumblr experience, Felix and Chan liked to go on Tumblr and see if there were any fans watching their survival show and hopefully rooting for them to debut. There were a lot. One day, Chan logged onto his account and began to randomly read posts. He encountered a post called “Penpals?”. He was intrigued.
***
“Penpals?”
Hello! My name is Arizona, I am 20 years old and I am looking for a penpal…
Tags: penpal, kpop penpal, kpop
***
Bang Chan was definitely intrigued by this. He never had a penpal before and what better than someone who didn’t know and never will know who he is. So, he did it. He messaged that person and made sure she knew that he was a safe person to write to. He didn’t want her to give her address to random strangers. But wait, is it just a letter? He looked for ideas and decided on sending her a care package with a few Korean things like snacks, face masks and some cute stationary for her to keep. This was probably the only time he was going to send it anyway. Before he sent it, he made sure to put a fake name on his dorm address. From her tumblr page he knew that she had no idea who they were. She was more into RnB and older generations.
***
Arizona dozed off in her music history class, as always. “Why do I need a degree?” She thought. It’s just a piece of paper and a lot of debt. Eventually, her class finished and she did what she does every single Friday, look for her best friend Nick, sit in their local coffee shop, start their homework and plan their next week. They did that, every single Friday.
“Any luck yet” Nick asked as edited his class notes.
“Yeah! I got one from Australia on Monday and one from Tennessee on Wednesday!” Arizona was ecstatic when she saw the letters in her mailbox. She read them twice and she put the letters and everything in a beautiful velvet box her mother used to have. The tea she received from her Aussie penpal? She drank it.
“I really don’t know how you do it”.
“Do what?”
“Have the patience to write letters and decorate them”. She laughed.
“You just have to be into it. Just like you’re into English, unlike me”.
After a good 2 hours they both headed home. Arizona left her bag in the living room and headed over to the kitchen to help her mother make dinner.
“Honey, did you order anything?” Her mother asked.
“Not that I know of. Why?” Her mother, Clara, nodded her head towards the kitchen table where a box sat. It was a decent sized box. Did she order something? She sat down at the table and examined the box. It did come from Asia for sure because of the mailing information but she was sure she didn’t order anything. Maybe she accidentally clicked order on yesstyle the last time she was on the site. She looked at the sender’s name: Bang Jin Ho. Who was that? Then she remembered the conversation she had with someone from South Korea on Tumblr. ‘Oh shit!’ She thought.
“Mom, I’ll be right back!” She grabbed the box and ran to her room. Her heart was beating fast. She didn’t think he would send her something, maybe a letter, but a big box? She jumped on her bed and began to open it. AGH! She couldn’t. She was too excited.
‘Breathe Arizona. Breathe.’ She took a deep breath and finally opened the box. Shocked is a small word for what she felt.
‘’Did I order a Korean subscription box?” She said out loud. A letter in a blue envelope was the first thing she noticed but, she wanted to save the letter for last so she set it aside.
The first thing she saw was a couple of face masks, Korean face masks. Let me say this again. Korean face masks. Do you know how much these cost online + shipping or in the store? Like 5 dollars each! Anyway she was extremely surprised, there was also a box of.. tea? She obviously couldn’t read Korean. There were two packets of dried seaweed. ‘Oh! I have to try that.’ There was also a mug…. Arizona almost fainted. It was a pink mug that said Girls Generation. Her favorite gg’s! There are more things?! ‘How much money did he spend?’ She thought. There were 3 packs of ramen with different flavors and level of spiciness and oh my lord… so much stationary. ‘Did he buy the whole store?’
Her hands dropped onto her lap as she stared towards the wall. He did this for her. Shipping must have been expensive as hell. She suddenly felt bad. What if he was in a tight spot and needed the money? Did she seem very eager to know about his culture? Oh no. What is he was a sugar daddy?! She didn’t want one! She shook the image out of her head to keep focusing on her task. There were two things left; a pair of bamboo chopsticks and a beautiful bookmark with a golden temple which she immediately put in the book she was currently reading.
She was touched, extremely touched. She put everything back with care and grabbed the letter. Her name was written in neat handwriting.
Dear Arizona, I have to be really honest with you. I’ve never really written a letter before, much less a handwritten on. So you’re the lucky first. I hope this package doesn’t have any problems getting to you. I also hope you liked everything in it. As you may know, I am from South Korea! These are some things from here that I really hope you like. The tea that is inside is Yuja-cha tea, you just stir it in hot water. I know you like SNSD so I included the mug. Oh! I wish I could’ve sent you Soju but I don’t think customs would’ve liked that and I know the legal age in America is 21.
As you also know, my name is Jinho. I am 20 years old and I love music and dancing. I grew up in Australia but moved to Korea because of my dad’s job. I am new to the whole penpaling thing so I really don’t know what else to write about. I do want to recommend you some songs. I know you don’t listen to a lot of newer kpop but here are the songs that I personally like:
Likey by Twice
Be Lazy by Day 6
You Are by Got7
Matryoshka  by 3racha (they are soundcloud rappers. I recently discovered them and they’re really good)
I think I’ll end this here. I live in a rented house with a couple of my friends and we are going out to dinner as a group and they are being extremely noisy and I should get ready. I uh, should go. Bye! I hope you have a lovely day and days until you hear from me again. That is if I hear from you again. It was nice writing to you! Bye!
Jinho.
Arizona was smiling ear to ear. Again, she really didn’t expect this gesture. She made a mental note to write down a list in order to send him a few things and to pick up a few more shifts at work. Shipping will be expensive as hell but it’s the least she could do.

History3 ep 13 summary - TUGS AT UR HEARTSTRINGS BUT it’s a good episode
I’m soooo tired but the energy has come again because of Trapped HAHAHAHA the thought of BIRTHDAY SCENE gives me strength to go on praying there is NO JAM on the live stream today we’ll see
OMG what the hell we don’t get a bed scene so the two bed scenes that the writers were talking about WE WILL GET THEM SOMETIME LATER it might be after birthday scene now that I think about it but also guys I think you’ll like this episode because the PLOT MOVES and there’s plot development thank god and we actually delve into serious stuff - the dilemma of Tang Yi as a mob boss and Shao Fei as a police officer finally comes into play here
Shao Fei runs off after Tang Yi kisses his wound (DAMN HE PRESSED HIS MOUTH TO THE WOUND FOR SO DAMN LONG?!) and asks if it still hurts and Tang Yi just laughs and says ‘he’s still too soft’ AND SHAO FEI IS LITERALLY HYPERVENTILATING IN THE TOILET THEN WE GET DOMESTIC SCENE - Tang Yi cooking in the kitchen for Shao Fei WITH AN APRON ON and Shao Fei is all: “it smells so good! is this the spicy dish we had with coke the other time?”
and wow BEST HUSBAND IN THE WORLD JUST SMILES AND GOES: “you can’t have spicy food or coke while you’re recovering”
shao fei: *pouts* “you’re so stingy, controlling this and that”
DOMESTIC HUSBANDS THEY ARE RIGHT HERE GUYS!!!!!
so they sit down and cute shao fei takes a bit of the dish and puts it on tang yi’s rice first before eating himself (i LURVE THIS) - and tang yi obviously is kind of amused and touched that shao fei did that, and as they’re about to eat that’s when tang yi broaches the topic of shao fei staying at the police station because it’s safer for him there, and obviously shao fei is all ‘WHY?!’ and demands to know a reason and i thought they were gonna start fighting but thank god they’re both soft smol bbs so they just look at each other waiting for the other person to say something, and tang yi goes: “i’ll tell you, but you must promise to stay out of it. if you can’t promise me that, i won’t tell you”
so shao fei obviously agrees and tang yi starts the flashback by saying: “do you know what it’s like to grow up in a place where no one cares about and loves you? that’s the kind of place i grew up in”
AND YES HERE WE GET TANG YI AND BOSS TANG AND HONG YE BACKSTORY (still waiting for Shao fei’s COME ON) - This entire like flashback tugged at my heartstrings guys TUGGED AT MY HEARTSTRINGS I almost cried?!!! - So young Tang Yi was adopted by adoptive parents because the mom wanted to adopt him but the mom died, so the dad was never supportive of his wife adopting tang Yi and when she died he became neglectful and abusive
We start off with young Tang Yi going home and it’s his birthday but obviously the terrible dad doesn’t notice, but Tang Yi goes to his room and eats food and is about to eat cake in front of the photo of him and his mom - the dad comes into the room and he yells at tang yi for going into his room to steal the photo of him and his mom - tang yi says that it’s not his, it’s a photo of him and his mom
and the dad goes: “she’s not your mom and i’m not your dad!”
tang yi doesn’t get why he can’t have the photo and snarks back and the dad slaps him, and says a bunch of other stupid shit, so tang yi leaves home with literally just the clothes on his back and the backpack (can’t rmb if he took the photo or not) - and this scene was truly realistic, i felt that slap and everything so kudos to the actors playing young tang yi and the dad?!
then next scene: we see a super skinny hong ye fighting with a bunch of older male teens over the bicycle they stole, and tang yi is somehow there as well, and they end up fighting with the older teens - long story short, boss tang (tang guo dong) passes by with a SUPER YOUNG LOOKING DAO YI OMG?! and they help tang yi and hong ye out - boss tang tells them to hurry and go home, and hong ye just simply says: “i don’t have a home”
boss tang stares at them for a while, and although tang yi doesn’t say a thing you can tell by his clothes and dirty face that obviously he has been on the streets for a while as well? so boss tang is all: “you guys hungry? want to eat some food?”
tang yi, the cautious, smart boy who knows that most strangers are up to no good, says no, while hong ye who really is hungry, says yes
anw in the next scene boss tang and tang yi are eating at the table alone - although tang yi isn’t eating (and boss tang mentions that hong ye has already eaten three bowls of rice), so boss tang leaves tang yi to eat by himself and give him some space while he goes check on hong ye to see whether she’s gone for a shower yet
a year or less later, we see tang yi coming home to the house, and boss tang is cooking dinner - it looks fucking delicious btw and i haven’t eaten dinner so jfc i really wanted to reach into the screens for those golden fried mantous (buns) - anw, tang yi is holding onto a little box that is definitely a cake for his birthday and boss tang tells him that dinner is ready so he can come down after he’s put away his stuff - much later, the sky is dark and they’re eating already and BOSS TANG says there’s one more dish and then switches off all the lights, much to tang yi’s confusion
then boss tang comes out with a cake!!!! omg sweetest thing ever - after that they sit at the couch and make playdoh or clay figurines of ‘old tang’ and ‘little tang’ - it’s the cutest shit i’ve ever seen
so while tang yi is reminiscing all of this, he says: “boss tang gave me my first home, my first birthday etc. etc.” - basically boss tang gave him the home he never had, and then he says to shao fei: “but on that day four years ago, i watched him bleed to death in front of me - can you imagine in that moment i lost everything, and my life was ruined? do you think i can let the person who did this go?”
shao fei: “so that’s why you said you didn’t know anything, because you were waiting to take revenge yourself”
then: “tang yi, the best punishment for that person is to get justice under the law”
and of course tang yi insists that he will never ever give this person to the police, he WILL take revenge by his own hands - and shao fei dishes out what probably is the most realistic line in this entire damn show (and one that i think we’ve all been waiting for): “but tang yi, you know that if you take revenge on your own, as a police officer, i will have to catch you?”
and OMG THE HEARTBREAK BETWEEN THEM BOTH!!!! tang yi’s eyes are already watery and he just says: “you do what you need to do. i do what i need to do”
GOSH COULD THEY BE ANYMORE HEARTBREAKING LIKE WE BARELY JUST GOT THE HAPPY PARTS TWO EPISODES AGO?!! (and though i say that i think this episode was about time, because we really needed to move on the plot!!!!)
the next scene we get zhao zi asking online on a forum “what to do when a guy confesses to another guy” AND OMFG THIS IS HILARIOUS he gets the following responses:
“welcome to a whole new world”
“rmb to prepare some VASELINE”
#gaypanic!!!!!
LIKE WOW chinese netizens, you guys are real damn helpful?!!!! HAHAHAHHAA anw i totally died at the vaseline part and the funniest thing was zhao zi, at work, was READING THE RESPONSES OUT ALOUD like did you want the entire police station to know that jack, a well-known gangster and criminal, wants to bang you? and then yu qi who sits next to him (she’s recovered at least on the surface and moving on with her life ATTA GIRL YOU GO!!!) gives him the WHAT THE FUCK look at the things he’s saying - then zhao zi goes to shao fei and asks him the same thing, but shao fei was the one who confessed in this case, and zhao zi just shook his head and goes: “irrelevant, totally irrelevant”
then we move to tang yi’s house!!! omgggg TANG YI LOOKS DAMN FINE WITH THOSE EARRINGS AND THAT WHITE TURTLENECK i would like to thank the wardrobe in charge for picking out tang yi’s HELLA FINE CLOTHES
anw, hong ye and dao yi are there to discuss work, and she’s obviously still mad at dao yi, and tang yi then peruses some files on the project they’re on and picks a company - hong ye is like: “are you sure? they’ve only been around for 5 years”
and tang yi goes on and on about how he thinks the founder of the company is a good and capable person, and that hong ye should meet him because for work, and also secondly, because the founder actually told tang yi that he kind of liked hong ye at a party previously (so anw this founder is the guy we saw in the previews) - and then obviously dao yi is not happy about it and tells tang yi not to do that, but tang yi reminds him that: “if you keep on regretting, you’re going to miss her and you will miss this chance forever”
ah de turns up then and tells tang yi that chen wen hao has invited him for tea next week and tang yi says: “i’ll be there” - ah de tries to discourage him from gg but we all know that tang yi is doesn’t usually listen to ah de so he ignores him
the next scene: tang yi opens the box and we see the birthday hat from his first birthday with boss tang and the clay house he made when he was younger that represented the home that boss tang gave him, and he says to himself: “a year has passed again, happy birthday (to himself)”
AND YES LI ZHEN JIE AND BOSS TANG HAVE THE SAME EXACT BOX THAT THEY GAVE TO SHAO FEI AND TANG YI SO THEY ARE DEFINITELY CONNECTED AND EVERYTHING I really can’t wait to see how it all plays out!!!
anw we’ll get all the crazy scenes like the drugging part and the knifing parts PLUS BIRTHDAY SCENE TOMORROW - everything exciting is only happening tmr so let’s all prepare for death tomorrow friends!!! i’m just glad they’re moving things along but i’ve really got no idea how they’re gonna squeeze:
1. dao yi and hong ye
2. jack and zhao zi
3. tang yi and shao fei being happy and all and omelette scene and DOMESTIC HUSBANDS
4. slightly more backstory to reveal the incident four years ago
5. tang guo dong + li zhen storyline briefly at least
6. li zhen and shao fei relationship
... all in the next 7 episodes, which is like about 3 hours worth of screen time, i really got no idea
i really liked this episode though! really liked that we saw young tang yi and younger boss tang!!! <3

Lauren: Welcome to Lingthusiasm, a podcast that’s enthusiastic about linguistics! I’m Lauren Gawne.
Gretchen: And I’m Gretchen McCulloch, and today, we’re getting enthusiastic about words for family members – kinship terms! But first, we’re looking forward to 2019. It’s almost here. We’re very excited to continue with the regular show. We have some exciting plans – like video episodes.
Lauren: We’ve had a really exciting 2018. We’ve done lots of really cool stuff. You’ve been along for the ride, and we’re really looking forward to continuing with regular episodes and other exciting things in 2019.
Gretchen: And we just hit our goal to make a special video episode about the linguistics of gesture, which is super exciting.
Lauren: It was also really great to have Gretchen in Australia when we hit the goal for the gesture videos. That happened while she was out on her trip to do the live shows. We had celebratory ice cream. It was very exciting.
Gretchen: Yes, so that was fantastic. We’re looking forward to the next goal, which is going to be a special video episode interviewing a deaf linguist about the linguistics of sign language. Stay tuned for which sign language and which linguist we’re going to be interviewing for that once we hit that goal.
Lauren: Our latest bonus Patreon episode is a Q&A that we did while we were in the same geographic location, which you can find on patreon.com/lingthusiasm.
Gretchen: Yes, as well as 20 previous bonus episodes, which is almost an entire double Lingthusiasm. You should definitely check that out if you haven’t already.
Lauren: We also both have other exciting 2019 adventures. I am having a baby, which we mentioned a couple of episodes ago. That will take up a fair amount of my 2019, I feel.
Gretchen: I feel like babies are pretty busy. But the episodes will continue as scheduled. I have a book coming out in July 2019, so you’ll also hear –
Lauren: A book baby!
Gretchen: A book baby! I wonder which one is gonna be cuter. We probably shouldn’t have that competition.
Lauren: They’re cute in their own ways.
Gretchen: One of them will eventually learn to talk back, and it won’t be the book. If you wanna see what the cover looks like, and for pre-order information, you can check out the link in the show notes or on my website as well.

Gretchen: So, Lauren, here is an important linguistic question – what are you gonna have your baby call you? Are you gonna be a “Mama,” a “Mum,” a “Mummy?”
Lauren: I haven’t thought about this, which means I guess that I’m just gonna go with my socio-cultural norms, so I’m probably gonna be “mum.”
Gretchen: Okay, that’s very standard, yeah. It seems legit.
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: I mean, I have some friends who called their parents – or had their kids call them by their first names.
Lauren: Oh, yeah, that always seems really weird to me. If I call my parents by their first name, it’s because we’re having some kind of very silly conversation.
Gretchen: I think I only do it if I’m at a grocery store, or a park, or something, and I need to catch their attention, and saying “Mom” or “Dad” isn’t working, and so I’m like, “I guess I should say their name to get them to turn around.” Maybe that’s a thing you could do.
Lauren: I love how it’s such a conscious decision for you.
Gretchen: Definitely not part of my norm, but it is part of some people’s norms.
Lauren: Yeah, I know people whose kids call them by their first name just because they find the idea of being “Mum” or “Dad” really weird.
Gretchen: I also know people who find the idea of “Mum” or “Dad” being weird. They go by something like “Mama,” or “Papa” or, you know, things like –
Lauren: Or they have some kind of cultural – I have people whose families have Italian heritage, so they’re “Mama” or “Papa.” I knew someone at school who had a “Grandmother,” but her friend at school had a “Nonna.” And she was like, “Well, that word sounds cool.” And so she just started calling her very Anglo-Australian grandmother “Nonna” even though there’s no family history of Italian naming in their family.
Gretchen: That’s very cute.
Lauren: It was really cute. So sometimes people will deviate – every family has its own idiosyncrasies. Sometimes, they pop up in the kinship terminology that people use.
Gretchen: I think, especially for grandparents, those seem to be a little bit more idiosyncratic, whether cultural or there’re just more names for grandparents. Like, “Mama,” and “Papa,” and “Da-Da” seem to be very common across different languages. Whereas, whether you say “Nana,” or “Nonna,” or “Opa,” or “Oma,” or these kinds of things, tend to be a bit more different.
Lauren: We have both a “Grandfather” and a “Pop” in terms of my grandparents.
Gretchen: Yeah, I had both “Grandad” and “Papa,” then, for the grandmothers, both “Mimi” and “GG,” which are idiosyncratic names.
Lauren: “Mimi” and “GG?”
Gretchen: Yeah, my –
Lauren: Where did they come from?
Gretchen: Well, so “GG” comes from the fact that that grandmother was named “Gretchen,” who I was named after. So “GG” stands for “Grandma Gretchen.” And her grandmother –
Lauren: Oh, that’s so great. Like, lovely and meta.
Gretchen: Yeah, and her grandmother was also named “Gretchen,” who she was named after, so she had a “GG.” Sometimes she used to say, “Well, my GG blah blah blah…” So I’ve always known in a weird way that if I had grandkids, I already have a grandma name.
Lauren: Wow, that’s a lot of presupposition there, Gretchen.
Gretchen: Because, clearly, I have to continue the tradition of “GG” if I have kids – if I have grandkids.
Lauren: It’ll be a nice story.
Gretchen: Yeah, and “Mimi” – I, apparently, at around the age of one or two, gave this name to my grandmother because I was the oldest grandkid on this side. That’s what I apparently started calling her, and it stuck.
Lauren: Cool. You created language change within your family.
Gretchen: I was pre-linguist!
Lauren: You’re a linguist innovator.
Gretchen: Yeah, but my grandmother Mimi used to joke that “Mimi” and “GG” sounded like two little French poodles or something like this.
Lauren: They do. It’s very cute.
Gretchen: I think, especially in English, kids often end up creating or using different terms from different cultures because it’s really useful in a family context to be able to distinguish between maternal and paternal grandparents. And yet, this is not something that English has built-in words to do. Whereas, other languages do.
Lauren: Yeah, and when you start looking at – we have all these different things that we call different members of our family – so different kinship terms – and we start looking at how different parts of the family get segmented up and what different languages and cultures pay attention to. You start to realise that some languages lump together a whole bunch of people that we might separate out into different terms. English is very good at lumping together groups of people that have distinct kinship terms in other languages and cultures. It’s always really fun to learn those different systems and start thinking about how your family relate to each other in different ways.
Gretchen: Yeah, I haven’t really – most of the languages that I’ve worked with have been European, so I haven’t done a whole lot with languages that have other kinship terms. But there’re some different forms in Syuba, right?
Lauren: Yeah, when I’m in Nepal, when people ask about my family, I suddenly have to start thinking about – for example, aunts and uncles. It varies depending upon whether they’re your uncles on your dad’s side or your uncles on your mother’s side. In Syuba, your “Ao” is your father’s brother, and your “Ashang” is your mother’s brother. So your uncles on each side have different names. And then, in terms of your aunts, there’s actually a whole bunch of different terms. The aunts on your mother’s side all get called “Ama,” which is the same as the word for mother –
Gretchen: Oh, interesting.
Lauren: – and so you distinguish them by saying “Ama Chombo” or “Ama Chame,” which means your “big mother,” your aunts that are older than your mother, and your “Ama Chame” are your aunts on your mother’s side that are younger than your mother.
Gretchen: Oh, so that’s also distinguished – the older versus younger side.
Lauren: Yeah, and it’s not that people don’t know – just to make it clear. It’s not that people don’t know that their mother is different from their aunt. It’s just that that’s how the system – I know that my uncles on my dad’s side are different to the uncles on my mom’s side. I just don’t think about it that much day-to-day.
Gretchen: But something I find really interesting is that English doesn’t distinguish between uncle-by-marriage or aunt-by-marriage versus uncle and aunt that are actually your blood relatives.
Lauren: No.
Gretchen: Personally, I have a distinction, I guess, between uncles and aunts that were already in the family when I was a kid and the ones that have subsequently married my uncles or aunts after I got older because the ones that were in the family when I was a kid, I call them all “Uncle” and “Aunt.” And that’s fine. The ones that showed up when I was already a teenager, towards adulthood, I’m like – I just call them by their names because I didn’t have that – they were first introduced to me, I guess, as, “This is the boyfriend or girlfriend or person that so-and-so is dating.” And so, I spent a couple years knowing them just by their name for that reason. And then, when they got married, I didn’t switch over to calling them “Uncle” or “Aunt” even though, technically, they are. But somehow, that doesn’t work for me in the same way as the ones that I’ve known as part of the family ever since I was a kid.
Lauren: It’s like, for you, the terminology involves some kind of entrenchment within the family system.
Gretchen: Yeah, or like, “Did I know you as a child,” or something like that seems to be the factor, which is definitely not a factor that is officially encoded into any kinship system I’ve ever encountered but seems to be encoded in my personal kinship system.
Lauren: Which always makes these things more interesting.
Gretchen: Yeah, there’s the official kinship systems and then there’s the personal, idiosyncratic kinship systems. But there are languages that have different terms for relatives by marriage as well.
Lauren: Yeah, so your aunts on your mother’s side are your “Ama,” but if it’s your father’s brother’s wife it’s “Tsitsi.” Whereas, your aunts who are your father’s relatives – so younger sisters – are “Ani.”
Gretchen: Oh, interesting. Okay.
Lauren: And so, you know who was married into the family as opposed to who is a sister of your father.
Gretchen: And there’s more terms on the aunt side than on the uncle side?
Lauren: Because aunts can marry into families or marry out of families. In this culture, it’s the women who move house when they get married. So your uncles are always around whether they’re your father’s brothers or your mother’s brothers. Whereas, women aren’t bringing uncles into the house, necessarily. They’re less important to you.
Gretchen: Your uncles-in-law – you’re gonna have less contact with them, so they don’t have a distinct term for them.
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: I mean, you could say “uncles-in-law” or “aunts-in-law.” I don’t know why we don’t.
Lauren: I find the whole “in-law” terminology in English very confusing. If I were gonna fix English –
Gretchen: You would fix the in-laws?
Lauren: The kinship system does need a bit of a makeover, and the in-lawing is very confusing because – I mean, to me, it’s confusing because so many people in my family have long-term partners who aren’t married. I like to refer to them as “out-laws.”
Gretchen: I think a lot of people use the out-law terminology as a jocular version of in-laws.
Lauren: But it does kind of upset my grandparents.
Gretchen: See, my family says “out-laws” all the time.
Lauren: Whereas, it amuses me that – say, my brother’s partner technically has the same terminology as my partner’s sibling’s partner.
Gretchen: Yeah, that double layer. Maybe there should be “in-law-in-law.” Like, “brother in-law-in-law” should be the one that’s two steps from you?
Lauren: Yeah, I guess it depends on how close you feel to people as well. I generally don’t refer to my “sister-in-law.” I just refer to her by name.
Gretchen: Yeah, I mean, that’s fair, too.
Lauren: It’s a bit like the aunts-and-uncles thing. It’s too hard to assimilate you into my pre-existing kinship structure.
Gretchen: Well, and that’s the thing because, especially, if your siblings are having partners – assuming you’re fairly close in age to your siblings – you’re probably encountering those partners – you’ve already gone through your childhood acquisition of who your family is. And then, suddenly, your sibling’s bringing in somebody new. And it’s like – at what point do you switch over to that? Is it when they start living together? Is it when – do they have to have a formal wedding? Where do these things change? Maybe that’s part of the idiosyncratic system.
Lauren: We’ve distinguished some cultures have terms that vary depending whether it’s on your mother or father’s side, terms that differ depending on if someone’s older or younger. And, again, Syuba distinguishes siblings that are older or younger. “Older sister” is “Adzi,” but “younger sister” is “Nomo.” “Older brother” is “Ata,” and “younger brother” is “No.” When people ask me about my family, they ask, “Do you have siblings?” And I can say, “Yes, I am ‘Older Sister,’” and it – immediately, I have to say I have a younger brother and a younger sister. I immediately situate myself in my family structure.
Gretchen: If you say, “Older Sister,” that means you’re the oldest because that’s what your siblings call you?
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: If people say, “Do you have brothers or sisters,” and I say, “I have two siblings,” I think that immediately implies, “Okay, they’re different genders,” because if I had two sisters, I could just say I had two sisters.
Lauren: It would be – for an English speaker, you are giving an insufficient quantity of information by using “sibling.”
Gretchen: Yeah, I was giving a less-informative answer than I could. My sister and I both say, “Oh, yes, I have two siblings,” but my brother says, “I have two sisters.” And this always surprises me because I think of myself as being one of “siblings.” I don’t think of myself as being one of “sisters” because I have “siblings.” I don’t have “sisters.” But, of course, you know, at some point, it breaks down.
Lauren: Which brings us to some cultures focus on defining kin terms by gender. We do have a lot of terms in English. Your parents get distinguished by gender, your aunts and uncles, your grandparents. But not everyone does. “Cousins” is a good example of that. “Siblings” is a good example of that.
Gretchen: Yeah, “cousins” is especially interesting because English has this elaborate cousin system. And yet, for a lot of people, it’s fairly obscure. They’re aware of the terminology involved, but they don’t actually know how to apply it.
Lauren: I’m in contact with a fairly extended range of my family, and we all have just agreed at some point to just refer to each other as “cousins.” If someone’s really curious about why I have a 60-year-old cousin in Canada, I will talk them through the family structure. I can calculate out second-cousinses and once-removeds, but we just end up using “cousins” because it’s so much easier. We really aren’t very good at calculating it.
Gretchen: I mean, I have this very distinct memory for “cousins,” which I don’t have for other terms, of when I was about nine or ten. I had been seeing a bunch of one corner of the family tree, sitting down and calculating how all of the once-removeds and how all of the first-and-second-cousins-thing worked. When I did that, I memorised which of the people were which and which of the people weren’t. I call them all “cousins.” I’m not like, “Hi, Second Cousin Bill,” because I don’t think anyone really does that. But I can also be like, “Oh, I have a cousin in Australia.” He’s actually my first cousin once-removed because he’s my mom’s cousin. There’s a removal of generations.
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: I’ve had to explain this system to adult, native English-speakers, who, in principle, you’d expect to know the kinship terms of our own language, but the “cousins” system –
Lauren: And like, learning them at nine or ten is very late in language acquisition. A lot of kin terms we learn really early off. They’re some of our first words.
Gretchen: Especially for family terms, yeah. It’s one thing to be learning the extended numbers system. Like, maybe you don’t know what a “quadrillion” is at age nine or ten, or you don’t know some of the more technical vocabulary, or business jargon, or these corners of the lexicon. But kinship terms are very basic. They’re often learned very early.
This brings me to one of my favourite cross-linguistic studies, which is the one that finds that “Mama” and “Papa” are words that children use to address their mothers and fathers – are some of the very, very first words across a whole bunch of languages that are completely unrelated.
Lauren: Yeah, this is one of those it-seemed-so-obvious-when-I-first-learnt-it facts about language.
Gretchen: Yeah, about 60 years ago, the American anthropologist G.P. Murdock did this survey of over 500 cultural groups around the world. He found that about half of societies use some sort of combination of /mə/, /mɛɪ/, /na/, /nɛɪ/, /noʊ/ to mean “mother.” And another half, not necessarily the exact same societies, uses some combination of /pə/, /poʊ/, /ta/, or /toʊ/ to mean “father.” So /mama/, /mɛɪmɛɪ/, /nana/, /nɛɪnɛɪ/, /papa/, /tata/ – these kinds of things. He’s like, “This is a weird coincidence. Why?”
Lauren: Linguists get really caught up in historical linguistics, trying to use the relationship between lots of current languages to trace back to an older language. Some people thought maybe this relates to some fact of history. But Roman Jakobson had a completely different theory, and one that I find really compelling, which is that when you have an infant, and they’re learning to use their mouth, they’re gonna start with the sounds that are the easiest to make. The very easiest sounds to make are exactly those sounds that you mentioned in Murdock’s paper.
Gretchen: Especially, you know, /a/ is very easy. You can scream it. Many other sounds aren’t very scream-able. Babies can scream it. And /ma/, /pa/ – the sounds that involve your lips – are very also easy to make – very straightforward for the baby to learn to make. It doesn’t involve as much control as using the tongue or further back in the throat. It’s just a straightforward open-and-close thing. You’re not trying to do bits of vibration, or bits of frication, or other types of more complicated things. And maybe the baby can see what their parents are doing – you can see when someone else is using their lips. He figured it’s kind of a property of babies, but it’s also a property of parents thinking, “I’m so important in my child’s life. Clearly, this baby’s saying my name.”
Lauren: It’s a self-reinforcing fact across generations where parents are like, “Oh” – take what is essentially a child babbling and learning how to use their mouth as – “They’re talking to me! They’re saying my name!”
Gretchen: “They’re saying my name!” Which I think is also beautifully human of us in a very different sort of way.
Lauren: Which is why even though we say the proper English names are “Mother” and “Father,” if you ask people what their children’s first words were, you’ll often get them to say, “Oh, she said ‘Mama,’” even though that’s not what we think of as the normal English term. We accept very low standards from children in those regards.
Gretchen: It’s very charming. It’s also interesting that “Mama” and “Papa” are a lot more common as first names than “Amam” and “Apap,” which are made out of the same sounds but putting a consonant and then a vowel is much –
Lauren: Easier.
Gretchen: Is much easier. And some languages don’t let you begin words with vowels. But every language will let you begin a word with a consonant and end it with a vowel. Or some languages won’t let you end a word with a consonant. But consonant-vowel is a good basic syllable in every language. /ma/ is a better word than /am/, and /pa /is a better word than /ap/ for babies to learn and for languages to produce. You don’t get “Apap” and “Amam.” You get “Mama” and “Papa.”
Lauren: I’m gonna go from talking about some of the most primary and parentally instinctual vocabulary about kinship to sharing some really cool stuff in Australian languages, because one thing I find really interesting is when you have a culture that, over time, manages to create these incredibly elaborate and complex kinship systems – I think, in some ways, our inability to process our word for “cousins” is potentially a bit of a chicken-and-egg thing, right? We don’t use these terms very much because we don’t really talk about or track our extended families very often in our culture.
Gretchen: Right, but in cultures where people are less likely to move to cities, and are more likely to have larger families, and continue living in the same villages with or areas with a lot of extended family around, it’s useful to distinguish between all these different kinds of relationships. Especially to prevent people from having kids with people who are too closely related to them, which is, you know, useful for the continuation of the human species and shows up in different cultures a lot.
Lauren: When you have cultures that have been together, living in close-knit, complex societies for generations and generations, you can get some really cool kinship stuff. And Australian languages seem particularly well-disposed to this. One thing that’s really nifty is people calculate “harmonic generations.” This is where – to use your family as an example of what a harmonic generation is – in some ways, your lineage of GG’s is an example of harmonic generations, where grandparent and grandchildren are treated with the same kin term or treated as being part of a cohort together.
Gretchen: Oh, that’s interesting. I mean, I guess it’s kind of the case in English in the sense that they both get the prefix “grand.” Whereas, you don’t have that for parent/child, mother/father, daughter/son. They don’t have the prefix. Whereas, grandchild/grandparent have a symmetrical prefix.
Lauren: So in the Waanyi language, the term for “grandparent” can actually be used reciprocally to refer to a grandchild as well. There’s a really nice paper on that that I’ll link to in the show notes. Another really interesting thing is all of the relationships we’ve been talking about so far have been about my relationship with another person or your relationship with another person. And a lot of kin terms, you start with the individual in the centre of the diagram, and you’re like – “my aunt” is about my relationship with this person. Or “my grandparent,” or “my grandchild,” is about my specific relationship with a specific individual. And then – my grandparent is not your grandparent because we are not related to each other.
Gretchen: That is true.
Lauren: Whereas, tri-relational kin terms are terms that encode three different relationships. There are reasons why these come into being, but I’ll give you an example of one first.
Gretchen: Okay, I can’t even visualise this right now.
Lauren: Well, the good thing is there is a visualisation. There’ll be a link to this article by Joe Blythe. In Murrinhpatha, there is a term that is used by a male speaker when talking to their son or daughter about the son or daughter’s grandmother on the other side of the family.
Gretchen: Okay, okay.
Lauren: It’s not saying – it’s not a word for “my mother-in-law.” And it’s not a word for “your grandmother.” It’s a word that specifically means –
Gretchen: “Your opposite-side grandmother.”
Lauren: “Your opposite-side grandmother.”
Gretchen: “Your grandmother who is not my mother.”
Lauren: Yes.
Gretchen: And is it a prefix that’s used for any of the relatives on that side?
Lauren: No, there are entirely different forms depending on different relationships – for your son or daughter’s maternal grandparent on the other side of the family. And the reason that tri-relational kin terms like this one evolve is because there are taboos within the culture on men being able to speak to or about their mother-in-law.
Gretchen: Okay.
Lauren: That explains that one. But there are other tri-relational kin terms that don’t have to do with these taboos. It’s just about triangulating everyone in the relationship.
Gretchen: I guess that makes sense in the sense that – so when I’m talking to, especially, younger relatives, like ones that are little kids, I might refer to my own mother as “Aunt Whatever” if I’m talking to my young cousin because I know that if this kid is two or something, they don’t quite understand how all of the complex kinship terms work. So I’m gonna use the one that places myself in their position.
Lauren: Yes.
Gretchen: Or especially, if you see a young child, and you’re like, “Where’s Mummy,” you don’t mean where’s your own mum, you mean where’s the child’s mum.
Lauren: Yeah, so we can do these triangulations. We just do them in our own head and position ourselves like the other person.
Gretchen: Right. And we don’t have an additional set of vocabulary for it.
Lauren: This is an entirely separate set of vocabulary to help navigate the three-way relationship.
Gretchen: Yeah, that’s really interesting.
Lauren: It’s super interesting.
Gretchen: I can definitely see why that would be useful in certain circumstances, especially if you have a complex network of kin.
Lauren: There are complex words that are encoded into the language that aren’t encoded into ours, but there are also examples in Australian languages where these things get encoded into the grammar as well. In Kayardild there is – coming back to this harmonic-generations thing. I will use a different pronoun if I’m talking about me and someone in my own generation, or me and my grandparent, compared to me and my father, or my child, because the father or child are not – they’re disharmonic generations. Whereas, my siblings and my grandparents and my grandchildren are my harmonic generations. So there are entirely different pronoun forms depending on whether I’m referring to a group of people in my harmonic generations or non-harmonic generations. There’s a whole paper on this that I really love from Nick Evans back in 2003 that I’ll link to. The thing I really love about it is that Evans refers to this kind of phenomenon as “kintax.”
Gretchen: “Kintax?” Oh, that’s really good!
Lauren: Where the kinship system is so ingrained into the language that it becomes part of the grammar.
Gretchen: The kinship system is in the syntax. It’s “kintax.”
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: That actually – it sounds like a kind of tax that – a fee that you impose upon your family a little bit.
Lauren: Only if you’re not thinking of it with your linguist brain.
Gretchen: Only if you’re not thinking with your linguist brain. “Kintax.” That’s really good. Another linguistic system that I find really interesting that encodes family relationships in a different sort of way is the situation in Icelandic. Icelandic speakers will have names like – you might get, like, “Leif Erikson,” who is the son of Erik the Red, which a famous Viking. And then –
Lauren: Oh, yeah, “Erik’s son.” Sorry, just have to point out the obvious.
Gretchen: Who’s, literally, “the son of Erik,” yeah. But then Leif’s son doesn’t become something-something-also-Erikson. He becomes, I don’t know, like, “Sven Leifson.” This system is vaguely familiar to English speakers because we have names like “Davidson,” and “Peterson,” and “Johnson,” and stuff like that that have the “son” in them. But they’re no longer active.
Lauren: There was a recent History of English podcast episode where Kevin Stroud looks at how this changes in the Middle English period. We did have – you would be “Christopher Robertson.” And then, you’d have “William Christopherson,” who would then be having children who were like, “Thomas Williamson.” But then, eventually, those names froze. The whole idea of surnames is really central to English and really weird to Icelandic people.
Gretchen: Yeah, whereas in Icelandic, all of these get created. You also have the equivalence of, you know, like, “Leif’s daughter.” She’s not gonna get the last name “Leifson.” She’s gonna be “Leifsdottir.”
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: And in Icelandic, when you refer to someone, you know what their father’s name is, or sometimes their mother’s name – if they get named after their mother. They don’t have the custom of referring to people by their surname in formal contexts. Political leaders or dignitaries in Iceland – the correct formal way to refer to them is by their first name because the only context in which you would use “So-and-So’s son,” or “So-and-So’s daughter” is when you’re saying the full name, not as a replacement for their name.
Lauren: I love that everyone’s been on a name bender at the moment because, obviously, with an imminent human to name so have I. But there’s also a great Allusionist episode recently where Helen Zaltzman chats to some people in Iceland about their naming conventions and about the way that surnames aren’t static, but they change with each generation.
Gretchen: Yeah, and I found the Iceland thing really interesting because I realised that in the context where I’m figuring out who all my second cousin once-removeds are, I also generally know, when I’m introducing myself in a family reunion context, which of my family members I need to name in order for the person I’m talking to and I to figure out how we’re supposed to know each other.
Lauren: Yeah.
Gretchen: I don’t have this encoded in my name anywhere except for the fact that I happen to be named after my grandmother. But like – it’s part of conversation even in a more limited context.
Lauren: Yeah, going to family reunions or weddings, and then, I’m Lauren, “Chris’s daughter.”
Gretchen: Yeah, exactly. Or like, “Who are you here for in this wedding?” Like, “Which side of the wedding are you here for?” Even if you’re not a relative, you can be like, “Well, I’m So-and-So’s friend from university.”
Lauren: Yeah, that’s putting you in the extended non-kinship group.
Gretchen: Yeah, or like, at academic conferences, you’re like, “Oh, well, I’m So-and-So’s advisee.” And they’re like, “Oh, I know So-and-So.” Or like, the kind of extended networks.
Lauren: Humans have this need to triangulate where they sit within social relationships.
Gretchen: Yeah, absolutely. It’s also interesting – I was intrigued to learn when researching this episode that the word “sibling” in English is both fairly new and also very old.
Lauren: Hm, new in terms of its current use?
Gretchen: Yeah, so it comes from Old English. “Sib” is actually related to the word for “self.” But in Old English, “sibling” is just any family member. And then, in the early 1900s – 1903 – geneticists started talking about inheritance, and they were like, “Guys, it’s getting really annoying to keep saying ‘brothers and/or sisters’ this whole time. It’d be really great if we had a gender-neutral term for this umbrella category because inheritance doesn’t care.” And so they reached into Old English and pulled out this term that had meant “any relative” and started using it to mean “brother and/or sister.”
Lauren: Useful.
Gretchen: I was like, “This seems like a totally unremarkable word for me. It’s totally part of my active vocabulary. I didn’t acquire it when I was ten, like third cousin once-removed.” And yet, it’s a surprisingly recent innovation.
Lauren: I didn’t realise it was that recent. But one recent-ish innovation that I’ve enjoyed bringing into my vocabulary is a word on analogy, which is, instead of saying “nieces and nephews” all the time, saying “niblings.”
Gretchen: That’s fantastic. I like “niblings” a lot.
Lauren: Which has the double benefit of being cute. It was first used in a 1951 article by a linguist who was talking about kinship terms across languages and was like, “Look, a gender neutral-term like ‘sibling’ is really handy, so I’m just gonna coin ‘nibling’ while we’re at it.”
Gretchen: That’s great. I’ve also been seeing some people who are non-binary or gender queer trying to come up with terms for like, “Oh, well, one of my siblings is having a child. I want that kid to call me something, but I don’t want to be called ‘Aunt’ or ‘Uncle’ What other term can I come up with here?” I’ve seen a couple examples. I don’t think there’s one “nibling” go-to yet, but there’s a bunch of options like “pibling,” “parent-sibling.”
Lauren: Oh, I like “pibling.”
Gretchen: It’s kind of cute. It works very well in analogy or portmanteaus like “Auntle” or “Ancle.” I’ve seen “Unty,” which is like “Uncle” and “Aunty.” Or “Titi,” which is, I think, based on the Spanish – “Tio” and “Tia” are used for “Uncle” and “Aunt,” respectively. “Titi” is combining those. Or “Zizi,” similarly, for “Zio” and “Zia,” which is the Italian equivalent.
Lauren: And we’ve seen lots of examples of individual families innovating terms. I feel like if the system isn’t working for you within kinship, making it work for you and your family, however it’s structured, is a great idea.
Gretchen: Yeah, I think it’s very easy to make it to catch on in an individual family because if you tell a kid, “Here’s what to call me,” the kid doesn’t know any different. It works great for grandparents, and I think it should work really well for other family members as well. It’ll be interesting to keep following that,   because maybe in another generation or two, people will be like, “What do you mean ‘pibling’ was only invented in the 2000’s? It’s clearly part of my active vocabulary. You mean ‘nibling,’ and ‘pibling,’ and ‘sibling,’ were all once innovative?” Which I think is a really interesting corner of the lexicon.

What Bangtan is doing right now is what older groups like Sistar, Shinee, Super Junior, BigBang, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, 2PM, Beast (Highlight), and SNSD were doing in the past. I discovered kpop back in 2011 with GG’s Oh. They pecked my interest and made me want to check out other groups. That’s how I ended becoming a huge fan of BigBang and UKiss who used to be my favourite groups. I loved them a lot, and they greatly influenced my decision of following a page on Facebook that promoted groups that were about to debut. It’s greatly because of them that I discovered Bangtan on the day Taehyung was revealed to be the hidden member. It’s because of them that I listened to No More Dream on June 11, 2013 when the MV was released on YouTube.
What happened to me probably happened to many other people. I’m sure that many fans discovered new groups this year because their love for BTS made them want to look at what’s happening in kpop. I’m also aware of the fact that other groups are doing what Bangtan is doing.
People might have gotten interested in the genre because of others groups like Exo, Blackpink, Red Velvet, Monsta X, Twice, Seventeen, Got7, or iKon. It could have also been because of underrated and underappreciated groups like Vixx, B.A.P, Infinite, Pentagon, NU'EST, A-Pink, or BTOB. It is also true that many ARMYs only stan BTS; however, they have the right to. It’s their choice. Despite that, we can’t disagree on the fact that BTS peaked a lot of people’s interest. Thus, they played a role in helping popularize kpop worldwide.
Many people are mad because it’s BTS that is on top and not their favourite group, but they forget that the boys deserve this as much as their bias do. They struggled too, you know. It’s not because some might have or had it harder than them that it means their pain means nothing. It’s important to remember that it’s not true that your struggles are irrelevant because someone has it worst than you do. The kpop industry is very hard, and although all groups deserve to break through, it won’t happen to a lot of them.
Also, it’s not because they’re at the top that it means they should go down. Let’s be honest here. BigBang was at the top back then, and they still are. Did you guys forget Bang Bang Bang? It had been quite a few years since they had made a comeback. When that song dropped, it was so popular. There’s nothing wrong with Bangtan staying at the top. What is wrong though is trying to bring them down.
I can’t believe that people are willing to be racist just to ruin a group. Some people actually think it’s a good idea to hack ARMYs’ account in order to insult black people. That is such a disgusting thing to do. These people are also being disrespectful. Many of them are streaming Blackpink’s songs not because they love them but because they hate Bangtan. Rosé, Jisoo, Jennie, and Lisa are four talented and amazing women that deserve recognization. They deserve to have fans that love them for who they are. However, some fandoms think it’s okay to use them in order to ensure that BTS won’t be number one. Music isn’t a competition. I know Bangtan can’t always be first. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean it’s okay for people to disrespect BP like that. The members should have fans that want them to be at the top because they love what they’re doing. I’m not saying, “Don’t stream BP’s MV” or that their records don’t mean anything. What I’m saying is that they deserve to have followers that see them for who they are. They shouldn’t have to deal with people that see them as a mere mean to an end because of their hate for Bangtan.
In conclusion, if you are going to take part in that anti BTS movement, you are a despicable person. Also
