I have been re-reading Martha Wells' Books of the Raksura for comfort reasons and with the perspective of another half-decade since I first read them, may I present a proposition: these books are to Stargate Atlantis as Shards of Honor in the Vorkosigan series is to Star Trek, to wit, it's nothing like as simple or boring as "filed off serial number fanfic" but the underlying vibes are very, very real

It never fails to amaze me how different the way I view and understand the hunger games changes as I get older. Like I know that’s the whole point but I just watched mockingjay part 2 again and I feel like I watched a completely different film than when I was like 13 because it’s one thing to understand what the narrative is trying to say and another to have experience with themes the narrative discusses. Especially now that I’m older than Katniss was it really hits just how clearly she is a kid. Not in like a negative way or a way that diminishes all she went through and accomplished but in the way that at the end of the day she’s a 16 year old girl. She makes impulsive decisions, and leaps head first into things, fights with her heart for what she believes is right. And most people have the luxury of minor consequences for those actions, she carries the weight of peoples lives on her shoulders. Idk it’s just so fascinating to me

does lisa make it known that she doesn't like dove or is she able to keep it professional? what changes her mind about dove?

so she makes it obvious to her mom, mostly because she interacts with her mother more but also because she knows better than to basically just shittalk austin's girlfriend to his face. nevermind that she's a grown adult who knows better in general. However, you know that thing where people can make comments that are clearly meant to be about someone but they won't say it out right? yeah, that's kind of what lisa does in relation to dove. never says anything untoward about her toward baz or anything like that, because it's less of a professional dislike and more of a personal dislike, there's no reason to jeopardize her career over it.

when they break up lisa has to stop herself from saying i told you so, because she knows like most people how much it sucks to break it off with someone you love especially in the celebrity space so to speak. there's likely a whole conversation where austin admits that dove thought he was going to leave her after production wrapped, because that's what her relationships that start on set tend to do but he kept reassuring her that he wouldn't and then she did exactly that to him instead. and lisa just comforts him and has this minor moment of clarity where she somewhat defends dove and says that maybe she just wanted to avoid you doing it. of course she still thinks that was the wrong thing to do because it hurt austin and tells him as such but that's the extent rubbing it in his face. it does mean that when asked about her she is cordial but nothing like the gushing her mom does. so it's blatantly obvious she's not her biggest fan.

what finally changes all of this or at least is the catalyst for a bigger change is when austin and dove get back together they're interacting at graceland's premiere and lisa watches them. she watches how austin pulls dove close, watches how dove will buzzle into him and just watches how they're so intune and in love with each other and that's even before she sees the finished movie. when she sees that and sees austin acting as her dad and dove as her mom she realizes neither one of them is perfect in this and yeah, she'll always defend austin more because truly she's decided she'll play his mom figure for him but she realizes kind of like when it came to her parents there isn't a right person or a wrong person in this. just two people who are probably stupidly in love who make mistakes and aren't squeaky clean.

add in that when austin properly introduces them he looks like he's begging her not to say anything and she kind of mellows out on her dislike. still doesn't trust her until further along in the press tour and is so done with her and austin when it comes to the wedding but she can live with it. and then when they're married and have their first boy child and dove herself asks if she can use her son's name for their son's middle name and lisa realizes that no matter what happens that dove's probably in it for forever.

they're never going to be besties, to be honest, but they at least become way more friendly in the future.

WAAH okay I just finished the first ep of season 4 for bsd and I just OTL

I remembered something from the light novel that season 4 is opening with (book 3, The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency), so don't peek if you don't want to be spoiled for those who either haven't read and want to, or want to wait for the anime to release more episodes

BUT MAN I'm so sad remembering this, but seeing it happen and reading is just???? It hits different but in a good way (or as good as angst can get lmao)

but just seeing 14 yr old Ranpo versus 26 yr old Ranpo and realizing that he really hasn't changed-

He knew, when he was 14, that people didn't see what he saw and understood that his 'ability' was something that was unique to him due to his upbringing and parents (both brilliant people--his father specifically being an incredibly well-known detective- so really, it makes you wonder if this influenced his bragging but that's something for another time), but kept himself under the guise that people understood because...

If adults can't see what he can see, then how are they supposed to help him out when he's still a child? A child can't do everything themselves, so the idea that no one would be able to help him just makes his parent's death that much worse

And despite Fukuzawa not really knowing this straight out, it's interesting to see how he handles it

Not sure how to comfort a child whose essentially jaded with a lack of trust towards others and a continually decreasing will because he just keeps on getting beaten down? Oh easy, just tell him that the thing that's been giving him indirect woe is a skill. He only is being affected by his own brilliance because it's something that can't be helped. Give him a reason to be proud of it instead!

Uh but I'm getting carried away.

Anyway-- then we see 26 yr old Ranpo now who, really, has known the entire time that his 'skill' isn't a skill, but instead accepted Fukuzawa's attempt at comfort those 12 years ago because now it's more the idea that...if it isn't a skill, then what is he useful for? Within a group of people so talented--not just due to their individual skill, but their combat abilities and all that--why is he so special that he is a part of them? And why would he be so deserving of everyone's praise if he's just...normal?

Long story short, I just mainly remembered Ranpo's deep insecurity that's rooted in his view of his own competence and the effect of the loss of his parents at an early age and I just wanna grab his cheeks and stretch

ALSO ALSO in season 4's first ep when he's trying to nab a bite of the actress' sweets and she eats it instead that was soiefhoih what a brat
