[ID: an 11 panel comic featuring characters from the owl house. Panel 1- a cloaked Darius sneaking around a wall. panel 2 he peaks around the corner, saying "well? Did you retrieve...the package?". Panel 3 Hettie Cutburn (who has old Hollywood style text announcing "surprise Hettie Cutburn!" next to her) says "Darius! Of course! Took some digging but I found them eventually. Tell the boy I say 'hi!'". Panel four- she hands documents labeled "classified" to Darius. Later, Hunter (post timeskip) walks through a door in Darius' home, saying "hey Darius, hey Eber, I'm ba-". Next panel- Darius, Willow, and Eberwolf on the couch. Hunter says "...willow?", She replies "hey hunter!", he asks "what are you guys doing?
Darius says "oh nothing...except looking at pictures of you as a baby!" Holding up the documents from earlier. We see two pictures of a younger hunter framed like panels- the first is of hunter as a baby/toddler aged hunter freshly sprouted out of the ground with a blanket around him, covered in dirt, while the second one shows a young scout Hunter covered in bandages receiving his sprig plushie. Darius' narration reads "courtesy of Hettie Cutburn- she found the only surviving copy of your early life medical records and gave them to me". Willow says "aww, you were so cute!". The final panel shows Hunter looking embarrassed/stunned as Willow takes a photo of the documents, and Darius says "I'm considering it an early father's day present- so, thank you, Hunter". End ID]
MERRY DADRIUS WEEK!!! Thank you to @sergeantsporks for hosting! There's other prompts I wanna do but they'll probably be late (maybe I'll do them in bulk and upload them on the final day). Til then here's a silly comic!

I recently re-read (again XD) @that-angry-noldo's incredible fic about Finrod knowing he's being played by Celegorm & Curufin, but choosing to trust them! Afterwards, I began thinking about what sort of masks they would wear to the ball, and I figured Celegorm would wear something like a full-face wolf-shaped mask. But you just know Curufin would be audacious enough to wear a mask with gems reminiscent of the Silmarils in Finrod's halls.

Once i had a fic idea (that I still wanna get back to writing one day) that was the REVERSE* of the "Girl falls into middle Earth" trope, so instead it was "Prince Eldarion of Gondor falls into modern day Earth", and lives for a very confused time in modern day America, where he falls in love with a modern-day woman who he ends up taking back with him to Middle Earth when he Does manage to return, and so the fic would cover two timelines so to speak, or more...
take dual place in both like,,, modern day Earth where he's grappling with the craziness that is technology and modern day... everything, and then also in Middle Earth where she is grappling with "holy shit he was telling the TRUTH about where he came from????????" etc and it was... yeah sure, ridiculous, cliche, and probably something no one would be interested in reading, LOL, but it would satisfy that itch of mine to write a SUPER Self-Indulgent lotr fic 🤣🤔

thinking about how 200~ notes is seen as criminally low for fanart posts but most fic writers i know would be overjoyed with even just half of that. or a quarter, even

here's the thing about matthias: he isn't the honorable, reformed hero some of the fandom seems to see him as.
yes, he was raised by a tight-knit family of comrade soldiers and decides to betray them in the end. of course that took incredible strength. i don't deny that. but we also need to recognize that the drüskelle are not just some rogue cult. they are a core part of the fjerdan government, who is trying to wipe out the grisha because they are seen as dangerous. that's literally just genocide. however indoctrinated someone is, this is something that is evil from every angle, even if the character can't or won't see it.
and look, i love a good redemption arc, but matthias is such a passive actor in his. he falls in love with nina against his will. she changes his attitudes toward grisha because she's beautiful and kind so all grisha can't be bad, right? this a classic example of the trope of separating the "good ones" from the rest, where you cherry-pick specific individuals to point to as exceptions to a group's nature, which is still implied to be evil. you have to do a lot more than fall in love to truly unearth and address the roots of bigotry.
tbh, this is my biggest critique of the books as a whole. i loathe the "love conquers all" trope that pairs together a character from the oppressed group and one from the oppressors, letting the one show the other through the power of love that being bigoted is not nice. it puts all the responsibility on the former to prove their humanity, and gives all the credit to the latter's ability to be persuaded to recognize it. and then it inevitably leads to forgiveness, because the character has "earned" it by changing their views, once again making the victim seem like the villain if they don't absolve the oppressor of their past "mistakes". also, it's incredibly unrealistic for someone to fall in love with a person who actively hates them and considers them sub-human. in real life, people have to work on their bigotry before that happens, not use the relationship as a plot device for character development.
i think the idea of writing a character like matthias is neat. i think portraying someone's struggle to throw off the suffocating, hateful dogma they've been fed all their life is a story we need more of. i think personal growth of this variety should be celebrated, because otherwise people would never change. but i don't think the people, fictional or real, get to do this without facing profound consequences. it is not enough to feel sorry. it is not enough to apologize. it is definitely not enough to fall in love. and i think writing that lets people off the hook like this grossly oversimplifies power and oppression, and ends up being a feel-good way to romanticize people who cause a lot of harm.
a last note: my opinion is 100% influenced by my being bipoc. matthias is a classic aryan supremacist, even if being aryan isn't the thing he's being supremacist about. my gut reaction to that type of character is always going to be mistrust, both because people in real life have given me reason to be mistrustful and because characters like these are often written in a way that makes you sympathize with oppressors. i don't think matthias earns that trust, and i don't see why i owe him my affection as a reader.

slightly mean little fandom rant that may not be very coherent because i am admittedly in a state of disorientation but like. anon is off so it's not like i'll have to experience consequences if i misspeak.
i hate being in that weird space of not having any new fandoms that have good communities, but any newer communities for my older fandoms are just insufferable to me because... we've already had these exact conversations about 7.2 times each by now minimum, whether it's discourse-related or just a silly headcanon, and it causes the only contributions i can actually make to be combative because i'm tired and these lengthy conversations are unnecessary to have for Me to come to the Right Conclusions.
and then i become insufferable as a result because i am just as annoyed by everyone else's earlier stage of fandom development, which they can't help, as they probably are at me and my comparatively elder fan jadedness because the repetitiveness of these experiences just is not hitting in the ways i need my fandom experiences to hit rn, where i'd ideally get to grow with people on similar levels as me?
it's like you guys are in kindergarten and i am a college freshman looking to advance the stuff i've already spent years building, so it would be mean of me to say "you are all so stupid" instead of appreciating your new enthusiasm at the world and its possibilities but god. we are not the same. and finding people who are the same, at least for those older fandoms, is a rough time because the amount of people who stick with a thing as long as you have is going to dwindle year after year if you've even had a slightly comparable starting point in the first place.
it would just be easier if i could join new communities for shows as they drop but... i'm either not into anything popular enough to have other fans at all in fanon environments, they are TOO popular and so i can't really connect to anyone, or binge watch culture makes community impossible to form at all... OR i am the annoying new fan that is as insufferable as the older fans and there are no other new fans around to match that energy either.
obviously the solution really is just dragging pre-existing friends into things as much as you can but... sometimes i just miss the lightning in a bottle novelty of being able to join a space at its beginning where everyone is about at that same level looking to hang out with other fans and make friends for a few years until you all exhaust that magic and hope you find another lucky place to plant some roots.

Just because your personal headcanon doesn't line up with what happened in the actual book doesn't mean the book is bad/wrong. It just means the author wrote what they wanted and what is true to the character and not what you wanted.
You can make your guesses and yell all you want about what you think is right but canon is canon whether you like it or not. Your headcanon is not canon so rereading the actual books might be helpful to differentiate between what is true and what you made yourself believe is true. The author will always know their characters better than you think you do since those characters wouldn't exist without the author.

The thing about the Joker is that he sees himself as The Only One Who Understands That Nothing Matters. Life’s a joke and all that's real is the punchline, and he’s always the one with the last laugh. And this lends itself really well to a fourth-wall-breaking character who winks at the audience like Bugs Bunny, because he KNOWS nothing is real and no consequences can truly touch him!
But, and this is the Key Thing about the Joker, that never happens. He never winks at the audience. He’s never actually in on the joke. And that’s because he’s not funny lying to himself. Things matter to him all the time actually! Everything matters SO MUCH, because the Joker thinks he’s the center of the whole entire universe and when people aren’t paying attention to him, he doesn’t laugh about it, he throws a massive temper tantrum.
And it’s not that he wants the spotlight, exactly. It’s that he wants to be vindicated. He wants to prove that his worldview is the correct one. He wants to prove that he’s right, and always was and always will be. Because he really does believe that he’s infallible.
But you can’t tell a good joke if you don’t know how to laugh at yourself.

Fun Fact: If you use Twitter at all (in its dying days...), go check out the Nevermoor Quote Bot if you haven't already! It tweets out a Nevermoor quote every hour, pulling from the books and any extra chapters. It currently has 1016 quotes, and who knows how many Silverborn will bring.....

"The problem with fandom is how controlling fans can be about how you consume it, like the antis--" actually the REAL problem with fandom is that people end up forming a huge part of their identity, as well as an entire community, on a consumable product, and consuming a product in such a way will inevitably lead to toxicity within such a community.
It will lead to ridiculous infighting about the "right" way to consume a product, with folks completely willing to ignore any serious, socially damaging issues within the work, and others hyperfixating on those issues like they're the worst things currently happening on the entire planet.
Fandom as a whole inherently leads you to unhealthy ways of engaging with consumable art. It's not any subsection of fandom, it is fandom in its ENTIRETY.
I realize how difficult it is for people in fandom to accept this, speaking as someone who has found myself deep in fandom at times myself (and still sometimes engages in the same type of bullshit!), but when almost every studio is creating work that caters almost exclusively to fandom-type nonsense merely because they KNOW that that shit will create loyal, easily exploitable consumers, I feel like it's time to actually address the elephant in the room and accept that fandom as a whole should probably not exist.
