          A Scar Opened
(TCGF Characters React To Their Crush Getting Hurt Protecting Them)
(GN!Reader)
Tw: Blood, Cursing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pei Ming:
The infamous womanizer Pei Ming. He is known for sleeping with women, making them love him, then brutally dumping them with no remorse whatsoever. (At least he pays child support.) You from the moment you walked in hand him on a hook. You weren’t a Martial God but were still a God that got his attention greatly.
Oh he just wanted to make you his. You being aware of his so-called title brushed his advances away. But you would be lying to yourself if you said you hated him completely. Pei Ming also got desperate.
He found out what he was feeling wasn’t lust but love. He loved you. He had a crush on you. He still hasn’t accepted it and is trying to remove this so-called “crush” by hanging with even more women.
You both were in the main palace of the Emperor Jun Wu talking about a future mission in the mortal realm you two had to do until something caught your eye.
A spear blowing fast through the air about to hit Pei Ming. His back was faced to it and he seemed oblivious till you pushed him away causing you to get scarred on the chest. Blood dripped and slid down.
Pei Ming was mortified as he realized the situation and quickly checked where the spear came from.
“What in the heavens is going on?!” He yelled in a pissed off tone but concern was evident for you.
“T-this is kind of painful.” You utter out clutching your chest tightly.
“Shit.” Pei Ming mumbled and picked you up bridal style rushing you to a nearby medic. “Were you protecting me?” His eyes softened.
“Didn't want you getting hurt, you know?” You smile weakly.
“I won’t let this happen to you ever again. I’ll slaughter the asshole who did this.” He looked down holding you tightly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shi Qingxuan:
(Male Form)
The Wind Master, Shi Qingxuan. Known for his outgoing personality and bubbly appearance. First time you met them was on a mission you two got assigned together. Ever since then Shi Qingxuan had developed a crush on you.
He didn’t know why. Your beauty? Your personality? Your kindness? He doesn’t know. Though wherever you go he will cling to you like a little bat. It's cute and annoying at times.
“Oh you're going? Lemme come with!”
“If you're heading that way, so am I!”
“If you're in I’m in!”
Adorable really.
How did things go wrong today?
You two were making small talk and then from the corner of your eye you saw a pillar about to fall onto Shi Qingxuan. You couldn't save the both of you so you pushed Shi Qingxuan hard away making him yelp while a piece of the pillar slashed your arm.
Blood poured to the floor as you panted in pain.
“W-whats going on!?” The colour drained from Shi Qingxuans face as the situation slapped him.
“A pillar..hah..broke.” You were out of breath from the sudden attack on your arm and fell backwards till Shi Qingxuan caught you throwing you up into a piggyback ride.
“You need medical attention. Stat.” He said sternly, holding onto your legs tightly as you wrapped your arms around his neck trying not to fall.
“It’s..ow.” You mumble burying your head into his shoulder.
“Shush! No talking. I can’t believe you did that for me.” He smiles to himself but then goes back to strict. “I swear when I find the person who did this they won't ever see the light of day ever again.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mu Qing:
(God Form)
General Xuan Zhen, Mu Qing. He’s known for being an amazing Martial God as well as an amazing medic. (Two in one ig) He’s hard to approach from his rude personality. Though he isn’t really rude just closed off and thinks other emotions are weaknesses in ways.
As soon as you got introduced he had fallen in love with you. The 800 year old virgin actually fell in love. What a surprise to say. Though he believes that love is just a level higher than hate. Everytime you speak to him he gives you short and rude answers.
Though in reality he absolutely adores it when you talk to him. Keep talking to him. No matter how much he disses. Continue. He also glares at others who talk to you.
He’s jealous.
You were complementing Mu Qing on his skills, making him blush furiously.
“Are you making fun of me?” He says with a hiss. Though before you can respond you see a blade breaking through a window heading for Mu Qing. He couldn't see it since his back was faced to it and you quickly pushed him hearing him curse.
The blade instantly slashed your waist making you cough in pain and shut your eyes.
Mu Qing’s eyes widened in horror as his teeth clenched in aggravation.
“Who the hell did this?” His eye twitched as he got up and went to you to see how bad your wound was.
“Ouch. It hurts.” You say quietly.
“I know it does. Bare with me.” Mu Qing being a medic began healing you with a yellow glow cursing under his breath.
You hugged his arm softly, clearly not in a good state, making Mu Qing tense, then soften up and stroke your head unconsciously.
“Can’t wait to find the insect who did this.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feng Xin:
(God Form)
General Nan Yang, Feng Xin. Known for his heated temperamental problems and great strength as a Martial God. He’s more on the aggressive side and will not hesitate to harm the bad. (Or people who piss him off more than they should be) This man does not look like one to have a crush but that changed when you joined.
His heart began beating faster and his face flushed as he kept looking at you. Though sadly like Mu Qing he tends to be rude when you talk to him. Though when you catch him off guard he’ll just freeze dumbfounded while a huge blush creeps up on his cheeks.
He loves you deeply but won't admit it. At least he hasn’t gaslighted himself into thinking he just hates you a lot.
You were trying to ask Feng Xin about questions on Ghost City but he kept saying that he shouldn't tell you anything.
“Why should I tell you? What's in it for me?” He mumbles irritatedly but was secretly happy you were talking to him. You, having good hearing senses, could hear glass shards and looked up to see it falling. About to fall onto Feng Xin.
You couldn't pull Feng Xin from the immense power difference and pushed him, making him create a confused face till his face dropped as the glass shards sliced your arms repeatedly.
“Ow.” You say to yourself looking at the blood pooling down your arms like a river.
“What the fuck just happened?” Feng Xin says going to you and grabbing your arms roughly.
“I-I don’t know. Someone must have messed with the glass sculptures.” You wince as the pain got greater.
“Tch.” Feng Xin mumbled and picked you up like a potato bag gripping your thighs hard so you wouldn't fall as a blush made its way to your face.
“Is this necessary.?” You mumble.
“Yes.” He says holding your thighs even tighter ears going red.

Hils Watches Cross Fire - Ep 7
Tumblr media
I love these idiot boys flipping a coin to determine whether to change their whole careers
Tumblr media
Yes go and get your boyfriend back!
Tumblr media
Oh come on are they saying he can't walk because he's depressed? Is this going to be some Heidi nonsense where fresh air and playing esports lets him walk again?
Tumblr media
Aww she was so happy that she managed to double her test score thanks to Lu Xiaobei helping her and then she immediately got hauled in front of the dean for her grades still not being good enough ☹
Tumblr media
Oh no but also oh yes she knocked over his plant shelf. As someone who has always been a follow the rules sort of person I am cringing, but as a lover of fictional characters I am cheering
Tumblr media
The subs have randomly turned into Indonesian but I'm assuming she got either suspended or expelled for knocking over the dean's plants
Tumblr media
Aww he's come to speak on her behalf. I love this.
Tumblr media
As a contrast to all those characters who get an opportunity to do something that's really important to them and then immediately have a nap because the work is boring, she's eating fucking chilli peppers to keep herself awake and her mind active. Such a badass I love her.
Tumblr media
I love all the women in this. She's refusing to publish her thesis because her supervisor is insisting his name be added as a co-author even though he did no work. Stick to your guns! Men suck!
Tumblr media
Oh my god he joined a game just to announce his love and get his boy back
Tumblr media
Oh yeah they definitely slept together
Tumblr media
Dudes, don't be homophobic
Tumblr media Tumblr media
God, these two are such dramatic gays. I adore them.
Tumblr media
They are literally framing this as a romance
Tumblr media
I mean Lu Han has played Wu Xie. He knows all about how to play a gay disaster little dude
Tumblr media
JFC Xu Wei literally has his legs wrapped around Xiao Feng while their homophobic teammates shoot at them and throw grenades at them. This is more perfect than any reunion I was imagining.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then they left the internet cafe holding hands while people stared at them. I love this so much.
Tumblr media
I knew he was going to end up being the antagonist
Tumblr media
We seem to be back in Indonesian again. But I think this means Lu Xiaobei is banned from registering for the contest because of the accusation that he cheated
Tumblr media
And the solution is to have him wear a wig, glasses, and use a girl's ID. I'm sure this won't backfire at some point when it's most important
Tumblr media
Haha! He's wearing the wig in game too
Tumblr media
I love that he's there to just shit talk their opponents
Tumblr media
A fight breaks out and he's just happily on his phone. I can relate
Tumblr media
OMG THAT'S PANGZI FROM THE BABY TRIANGLE MOVIE! I didn't know he was in this!
Tumblr media
Oh, is he one of Lu Xiaobei's brother's teammates?
Tumblr media
Holy shit his wife bit him for lying about working overtime so he could go and play games
Tumblr media
I see them cuddling
Tumblr media
Ah, shit, his dad confiscated his laptop. He really is the worst

I’ve been neglecting the tumblr because I’ve been taking less screenshots. I love sharing my own captures to share, it makes it more memorable. So instead, here’s a compilation of collected official photos from my latest recently finished show, Who Rules the World.
This ended on a negative note for me, mainly for its messy plot; however there were some redeemable points.
1. The number of strong woman in this show is my cup of tea. Our female lead was consistently strong through the show (minus the few damsel moments). She’s smart, can fight, passionate, adorable, and compassionate. It was easy to root for Bai Feng Xi through the show, but sadly her character came second to Feng Lan Xi / Hei Feng Xi. The second character is Feng Qi Wu, the female strategist played by Xuan Lu. I like that despite wanting Feng Lan Xi, it was for a power move, but she never hung herself up on getting him. At the end of the day, Feng Qi Wu was a woman who wanted to reign with her own abilities. Hua Chun Ran played by An Yue Xi, though vain, still was able to stand her ground against her brother’s schemes, and come up with her own plan to become the queen. Sadly, she was pushed aside and left behind because these three woman could’ve been quite badass in their own ways.
2. Yang Yang’s Feng Lan Xi character was quite boring, and I’d probably be more interested in him as Hei Feng Xi, but I guess we get what we get. He speaks volumes about his love for Bai Feng Xi through the show. For someone who wanted to rule the world, would easily give up himself for Bai Feng Xi. I made a note on my insta post that I liked the irony of his hair turning white/bai because of his love for Bai Feng Xi. I’d have to say that I’d much prefer his other show in Glory of Special Forces and role as Yan Po Yue.
“They always say to love until the ocean and earth run dry. We both know that these are just false promises. As for me, I only want to hold your hand until the end of life.” Hei Fengxi
3. There was one side character (photo not shown) that I adored in Who Rules the World, Feng Chang, 1st prince of Yongzhou. I went into more details in my final review on my blog (mintyrecap.wordpress.com) but I couldn’t help but like his story more and his character’s internal struggles. The last character who made a minor appearance that caught my eye (yes, eye candy worthy mention) was He Kai Lang as Yan Ying Zhou. Sadly, his appearance was too fast but he left a huge impression on me that even Lai Yi couldn’t even fill, though Lai Yi had a bigger role.

@battleguqin asked: “ in my defence, i was four. “ [Feng Wu ]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’m gonna call that a lie.” She watched him out of the corner of her eye, her delivery just humming with sarcasm as she plated food. “What do you mean you didn’t come into this world as a fully formed adult.” Sometimes he acted like it. Sometimes she couldn’t imagine him as a mischievous child, or as a youngster. Though, she suspected he’d never really been that mischievous, maybe she was projecting on that one.
Smirking, she sat the bowl of food down on the table. “It’s cute, stop denying it.” Ok, she was done making fun of him and joking, it was time for dinner. Sitting down at the table, she smiled broadly at him, waiting for him to join her.
“I bet you were adorable.” Feng Wu however, was pretty sure she had been a disaster of a child, a cheeky little madam who had never taken no for an answer. Well. You had to be in her position, it wasn’t like she’d ever been allowed to do anything the first hundred times she asked. “Mostly because you’re still adorable.”

@yumingyesfairy I just finished episode 18 of Dance of the Phoenix...
Mu Yao...Mu Yao...MU - F*CKING - YAO! Girl...Zuo told this b*tch to leave Zhaoge alone and what does she do instead? Try to bully the girl into a fight. Zuo really did try and now I understand why she's so devoted to her. It's a shame Zhaoge doesn't see things from her perspective though. I get it though. She (Zhaoge) believed everyone abandoned her (and that couldn't be further from the truth).
I still don't like the love rival to Feng Wu angle though. It just feels forced. I do like Zuo as a rival, but not that kind of rival. Besides, I think she's a far better match for Yu Mingye (yes, even romantically lol)

Thank you for the request, @bout-to-snap <3
“This is why I don’t trust him!” Mu Qing fumed. “He’s literally the Lord of the Ghost Realm, Your Highness…”
Xie Lian allowed a small, relaxed smile to grace his lips. He was mediating a fight between Mu Qing, Feng Xin, and Hua Cheng for what seemed like the thousandth time. Though newly renovated, Puqi Shrine was still too small for these massive quarrels, and Xie Lian dreaded the property damage that would ensue if their swords were drawn.
Given all that had happened – the destruction of the heavens and defeat of Jun Wu – why were these three still at each other’s throats?
“I thought we were past this,” Xie Lian sighed. “We don’t get to see each other all the time, so can we please not fight?”
“Exactly, we don’t see get to see each other all the time, so can’t we talk to you in private?” Feng Xin said, fidgeting a little.
Xie Lian looked confused. “About what?”
“You expect me to walk away when you’ve just called me the scum of the earth?” Hua Cheng said coolly, examining his nails. “Gege, these servants are no good.”
“We’re not his servants!” Mu Qing exclaimed. Xie Lian thought it sounded like he was about to say “anymore” at the end, but cut off his speech abruptly, making the outburst awkward and clunky.
“Are you sure?” Hua Cheng asked skeptically. “Because when you’re with him, it’s like 800 years never happened, you can be his ever-most-loyal-servants again. The roleplaying is disgusting, and doesn’t absolve you from guilt.”
Xie Lian sensed the atmosphere in the shrine shift. He stepped forward again and raised his hands placatingly. “San Lang – “
“And what would you know?” Feng Xin demanded. “You can’t possibly understand what we’ve been through, at the time you were merely a mortal child.”
“I understand that you abandoned Dianxia when he was most vuln –“
“San Lang,” Xie Lian said. Hua Cheng’s lips instantly froze at the warning in Xie Lian’s tone; it was a lilt and a dangerous flavor that Xie Lian hardly used on anyone, and never on Hua Cheng.
“…”
“Why can’t they know, gege?” Hua Cheng asked softly. “Don’t you think they deserve to know? Frankly, their ignorance offends me.”
Feng Xin and Mu Qing had fallen silent, too, their faces both a few shades lighter. The word abandon seemed to always have that effect on them. Then Feng Xin regained his voice. “Ignor – know what? Taizi Dianxia, just what…”
Xie Lian had folded his arms, his mouth drawn into a line. “It’s old history,” he sighed. “There’s no need to bring things like this up. Do not shame me.”
“Shame you? When that came to visit you, he dismissed your fears as insan –“
Hua Cheng’s voice cut off for a moment, and the temperature in Puqi Shrine seemed to drop. Because, at that moment, an expression entirely foreign to Xie Lian flitted across his face: rage. Neither Mu Qing nor Feng Xin had seen him make that expression since his third ascension, and it didn’t suit him well.
It was gone as soon as it arrived, and Xie Lian’s characteristically peaceful smile returned in its stead. However, the faces of his two ex-subordinates were already white as sheets. Hua Cheng stepped toward, placing a hand on Xie Lian’s shoulder as if to hold him up.
“Dianxia, are you mad… at us?” Feng Xin whispered.
Xie Lian looked at him strangely, as if he had asked a very bizarre question indeed. “No… Not you.”
Hua Cheng snorted, as if he was thinking, too bad. Xie Lian’s face was soft. “In any case, I’m quite tired, so I think I will retire for the night. Please make yourselves at home.”
“Wh – you can’t – after –“ Mu Qing sputtered.
Feng Xin’s eyes were round. “Dianxia, does that mean… That time with White No-Face, when we were on the run… Was it really…?”
Xie Lian had started towards his chambers, but after being addressed, his shoulders tightened infinitesimally. Then, he turned back to the trio, his face still serene. “Yes.”
As if he’d been punched in the gut, Feng Xin slouched over. Mu Qing looked baffled.
“I didn’t tell you this because I knew you’d blame yourself. Yet, in the end, the only one who sinned was me. So, please, do not inquire further into this matter.”
With a nod and another smile, Xie Lian vanished into the back room, anxious to escape the conversation.
Feng Xin and Mu Qing were bursting with indescribable emotion. Some small part of Feng Xin fumed at Xie Lian for leaving them without explaining, but the rest of him just wallowed in a torrent of guilt, doubt, and self-questioning.
If the Taizi Dianxia wouldn’t tell them the truth, who would? Xie Lian had been abandoned with only his parents, who were long dead, so who besides him even knew what happened? The only people must be Jun Wu himself, and –
“Don’t look at me,” Hua Cheng rolled his eyes, leaning lazily against a chair. “I’m not going behind gege’s back for some backstabbing servants.”
“You’re the one who said we deserve to know,” Mu Qing argued.
“So? It’s gege’s story to tell, and he said no, so no.”
“How do you even know?”
Hua Cheng shrugged. “I was just ghost fire at the time. I had to watch.”
The corners of his eyes tightened, and a murderous look crossed his face. Unlike Xie Lian, his malice wasn’t bottled away, but instead broadcast for all to see.
“Watch what?” Feng Xin cried in anguish. “Why must you torture us?”
Hua Cheng snickered. “If only you knew your own irony.”
With that, he straightened and glided in Xie Lian’s direction, back towards the sleeping chambers.
“We – we’ll be back tomorrow!” Feng Xin and Mu Qing shouted at his receding back. Hua Cheng shrugged again.
//
That night, Hua Cheng was holding Xie Lian in his arms, and casually said, “Gege, this is what you did with Lang Qianqiu, too.” It wasn’t an accusation – it was never an accusation, just a comment.
Xie Lian exhaled. “I know.”
Hua Cheng’s voice grew husky. “Isn’t it enough that you suffered alone then, why must you be alone now, too? Why must you save everyone secretly, then endure their collective ridicule?” Then, “Is keeping it a secret truly doing anyone good?”
Xie Lian was silent. “Maybe I don’t have a good reason,” he finally said. “I don’t like thinking about it, really. I’m weak.”
“…”
“Although, looking back on it, I can’t believe that cute little ghost fire was you,” Xie Lian laughed. “You’d barely popped up and you already had a little cult following, so adorable!”
Hua Cheng grinned, but it was pained, like he couldn’t remember that period of his existence without discomfort. He said nothing, but his grip around Xie Lian tightened, like he was afraid of letting go.
Xie Lian noticed, and, after a beat of silence, shut his eyes. “I’ll think about it, okay?”
//
Feng Xin and Mu Qing would not give up. Day after day, they visited Xie Lian, demanding answers, so after months of heckling, Xie Lian finally agreed to explain what had happened all those years ago. When Xie Lian, Hua Cheng, Feng Xin, and Mu Qing sat down in Paradise Manor, Hua Cheng started talking first, trying to alleviate Xie Lian’s burden.
“…He’d wailed and screamed and cried and begged for mercy, but the people, having deemed him a sinner, continued without hesitation. Of course, his sinfulness was merely an excuse to save their own skin…”
“…After one hundred fatal strikes, Dianxia laid on his own altar, disfigured beyond recognition. Nothing more than a pile of flesh.”
Feng Xin was not the type to cry. So, when his eyes grew wet and then started streaming, Xie Lian hurriedly waved off Hua Cheng’s stone-faced words.
“Feng Xin, this was hundreds of years ago,” Xie Lian assured him, patting his shoulder. “It’s not sad anymore. Also, I’ve endured worse since then.”
This aggravated Feng Xin even further, and he looked like he wanted to cry some more. “I just can’t… when I imagine it, I can’t help it…”
“Trust me, whatever you’re imagining, it was five million times worse in real time,” Hua Cheng muttered darkly. He stared at Xie Lian with an odd expression, before languidly pulling him into his embrace.
Feng Xin looked like he wanted to rebuke, but in the end, could not. Thus, he motioned for the story to continue.
Xie Lian skimmed over his recovery period, the reformation of his flesh, and Feng Xin’s departure, but before he was in the clear, he was interrupted.
“So that’s why you asked me to leave?” Feng Xin said incredulously.
“There was no need to pull you down with me,” Xie Lian murmured.
“I thought you’d gone insane,” Feng Xin mumbled, nauseated. “I told your mother and father… I left you…”
Describing what happened to his parents was even harder, and when he finally got to saying how he’d put his own head in the noose, eyes filling with blood and collarbone cracking, Mu Qing jumped up.
“DAMN IT,” he roared, picking up a glass and shattering it against the nearest wall. “Damn it, damn it, damn it, Dianxia! What the actual fuck?”
Xie Lian peered at him. “Please don’t break San Lang’s things,” he tried.
“WHAT DO I FUCKING CARE? FUCK, FUCK, FUCK, TAIZI DIANXIA, HOW COULD YOU KEEP SOMETHING LIKE THIS FROM US?” Mu Qing was panting, and Feng Xin was staring off into space, eyes empty. “WE COULD’VE HELPED! IF I’D HAVE KNOWN, I’D HAVE –“
“Come back?” Xie Lian questioned lightly. “Followed me until the end?”
There was a deafening silence.
“No… I wanted you both to break free,” Xie Lian said. “You had a future.”
“SO DID YOU!” Feng Xin cried, broken from his trance. “Why… why did all this… why must it happen to you?”
“For that, I have no answer,” Xie Lian said. “But, if it had to happen to anyone, I’m glad it happened to me.”
Feng Xin and Mu Qing looked like they’d been shattered into a million pieces. Xie Lian said ruefully, “This is why I didn’t want to tell you.”
Mu Qing rushed forward. “GODDAMN IT, THE FACT THAT I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT IT IS EVEN WORSE! WHY DIDN’T YOU ASK FOR HELP? YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO USE US, RELY ON US, THAT WAS OUR FUCKING JOB AND WE…”
“At the time, you were ganging up with Middle Court lackeys to chase him out of spiritual lands,” Hua Cheng remarked icily, pulling Xie Lian closer to him.
Mu Qing appeared stupefied, like Hua Cheng had just slapped him. “San Lang!” Xie Lian admonished. Mu Qing sat back down.
Both Feng Xin and Mu Qing both looked like they wanted to protest more, but Xie Lian continued with the story before they could. When he described donning the white mask and preparing to unleash the Human Face Disease, both of them seemed to hold their breath. Hua Cheng described his rebirth as a ghost soldier, following Xie Lian’s commands but never believing that he would truly commit the atrocity.
Feng Xin was regarding him with something that almost looked like newfound respect, but Mu Qing turned his head.
The rest was all downhill from there. He described laying on the pavement for days on end, and the one farmer who’d salvaged his faith in human goodness.
“To anyone else, thousands of onlookers ignoring your pain and suffering before one did anything shouldn’t reinforce your faith in anything…” Mu Qing muttered.
Xie Lian pressed forward, practically sprinting through the unleashed Human Face Disease, taking the brunt of the curses, and then Hua Cheng dying for him for the second time. He talked about ascending into heaven, and asking Jun Wu to punish him for his wrongdoings using banishment and cursed shckles.
“…DIANXIA?!?” Feng Xin gasped. “IT WASN’T A MURDEROUS RAMPAGE?”
“Nope!” Xie Lian said cheerily, relief crossing his face as if he was pleased to be done talking.
Mu Qing’s face darkened, and he started swearing again. “I WAS FUCKING WONDERING HOW SOMEONE AS TALENTED AS YOU SPENDS 800 YEARS TRYING TO ASCEND, IT WAS ON FUCKING PURPOSE? FUCKING FUCK, I WANT TO STRANGLE SOMETHING! SOMEONE GIVE ME SOMETHING TO BREAK!” He clomped off in a random direction.
Feng Xin’s face looked shadowed over, too. “Here I was wondering how you suddenly had such bad luck. As Crown Prince, you’d never had something so egregious. Now, learning that you asked for it… it all makes sense.” His hands were clenched into tight fists, and his words turned into cries. “Why… why… why… for 800 years, we felt… we waited, we were waiting, for something, and we thought maybe you’d died, or gone crazy, or vanished… We…”
Xie Lian had approached him, and put both hands on his shoulders. It was an old, but familiar gesture, and Feng Xin’s heart immediately squeezed with pain and regret. He was at a loss for words, and everything seemed wretched.
“Feng Xin, I understand your anguish,” Xie Lian said softly. “But I became very close to becoming that thing which I swore to destroy. And, to be honest, at that point I didn’t care much for godhood. I lost everything because of godhood. What I couldn’t stand to lose was myself, not to that monster, not to anyone. So, please understand. I’m sorry I hurt you, but it was necessary.”
“WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO FUCKING GOOD?” Mu Qing roared, coming to stand next to Feng Xin. “WHY CAN’T YOU EVER BE SELFISH?”
Xie Lian chuckled, and Mu Qing covered his mouth, as if the words had escaped by their own volition. “…I wasn’t being good, I was scared.”
Mu Qing swore more. Feng Xin, on the other hand, fell to his knees, his shoulders trembling. So, Xie Lian acted on impulse, pulling Mu Qing down to the ground, too. Xie Lian then wrapped one arm around Feng Xin, and the other around Mu Qing, enveloping the both of them in a hug.
“I’m sorry,” Xie Lian murmured again, trying to control their trembling. He couldn’t tell, at this point, if it was only Feng Xin, or if it was Mu Qing too.
“We failed. I failed,” Feng Xin said, and his voice was raw with agony. “Why are you apologizing?”
“It wasn’t fair to either of you… but I loved you very much, and it was like you were shackled to a man descending to the bottom of a lagoon. If I didn’t remove your chains, you would’ve drowned too.”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, holy shit, I’m so sorry,” Feng Xin said, almost gasping through the words. He looked as though someone had drawn a sword across his Adam’s apple, and he was choking through the blood. “Taizi Dianxia, I’m sorry. I failed.”
“Don’t be so damn self-sacrificing, Your Highness.” It was Mu Qing, this time, and he wasn’t struggling against the embrace. “Every single fucking time. Disgusting. How can we even stop you? Something like this. Damnit.”
“I’m a bit tougher than I look,” Xie Lian assured him. “Drowning is no big deal. Pain will subside. Embarrassment will fade. And look, I’m very happy now.”
From somewhere far away, Hua Cheng laughed slightly. However, even Mu Qing and Feng Xin, who weren’t well acquainted with him, could hear that it was laced with pain, too.
“I’m sorry. I wanted to stay with you,” Feng Xin said. “I wanted to stay, I trusted you unequivocally, you’re my world. But it scared me…”
Xie Lian smiled. “I know. You didn’t have to say anything. Ever since you came to help me at Yu Jun Mountain, I’ve known. And I’m grateful.”
“Stop being so damn forgiving.” Mu Qing’s voice was muffled by Xie Lian’s robes.
“Why? I forgive you.” Mu Qing and Feng Xin seemed to collapse in on themselves. So Xie Lian repeated, “I forgive you.”
No one moved for a long time. The trembling intensified. “You’re so damn forgiving,” Mu Qing mumbled. “It doesn’t mean a thing…”
And yet, they were not willing to break away.
Even after 800 years, Mu Qing and Feng Xin didn’t think that they would ever get used to being dazzled by the Crown Prince.

Hi......if you don't mind me asking, can I ask, who are your top 5 favorite characters from TGCF? And why? And what are your top 5 (or top 3) fav moments from the novel? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks.....
Hello!! Oh, I don't mind it at all, I think it's a really nice question, thanks for asking :') I'm sorry it turned out long, but you asked why and I deliver. Spoilers ahead!
First, my top 5 fav characters!
1) Hua Cheng
I've talked about this in a couple posts, but I adore how love is his main reason to become a stronger ghost. Even though he is a "very very bad very terrifying" calamity, his character and who he is revolves around love and, to me, that's a very powerful and interesting motive. It makes me so emotional and his devotion for Xie Lian is just so touching :') Plus, it's extremely easy to trust him and come to love him, and I was very grateful for him while I was reading! I thought it was going to be more difficult to empathize with him but not at all.
2) Xie Lian
Just... Baby (very pair with Hua Cheng). I was pleasantly surprised with him because when I started reading I thought he was going to be more... generic? In the sense that he was going to be the good guy who does no wrong at all and is pure and clean. But his background is so so interesting and dark and he still is the sweetest bean ever. He gets angry, scared, violent. Cries and laughs, loses himself... But finds his way back and does what makes him happy (even though if it's collecting scrap). And you still can see the trauma.
3) He Xuan
I already liked Ming Yi so much, but when his true identity and purposes are revealed... *chef kiss* He's so complex and (even though his actions made me sad) I understood his reasons, his anger and his grief. I could read about him a lot and I love exploring and discovering things about him. I must also say that I have a weak spot for dark, silent, serious characters and that's what he is.
4) Mu Qing and Feng Xin
Mu Qing's so interesting and complex!!! The final confession on the bridge was great and all the mixed signals showed how conflicted, confused and resentful he was for eight centuries. I'm weak for that sort of mechanics. (I'm gonna add Feng Xin here as well because they share a place in my heart and because I'm a cheater and want to add a sixth character). Then Feng Xin, who shares a lot of past with Mu Qing, but they can be easily told apart. I just have a soft spot for him, tbh. He left Xie Lian but felt very guilty (and still feels very guilty). He's loyal, has a bow and is handsome (there's more but I don't want to write the bible).
5) Shi Qingxuan
I love them, that's it. Poor soul had bad luck and got into trouble without even knowing they were getting into trouble. I think I've come to love them more after reading some fics and exploring his character, because in the novel I didn't love them as much. Shi Qingxuan is a very funny, loving and caring character who surprisingly goes through a lot. I would love to write about them!
And now my top 5 moments:
(I don't remember all the things that happened, so I'm gonna list those that first came to my mind when I thought about it).
1) Xie Lian and Hua Cheng moments and goodbye after defeating Jun Wu (and Hua Cheng removing Xie Lian's shackles)
2) Book 4 in general and especifically the conversation between Xie Lian and fire ghost Hua Cheng about Hua cheng's beloved and why he's not resting in peace
3) Xianle trio moments in Wuyong Palace (especially Xie Lian rescuing Mu Qing from the lava and Mu Qing's f-f-friend confession)
4) The reverend of empty words arc!
5) 33 gods and Mu Qing vs. Xie Lian in the mountain and........ the multiple stabbing......... sorry (I didn't enjoy it, but it made me feel many things and understand everything better, I just really like angst)
Shoutout to Hua Cheng "teaching" Xie Lian how to roll the dice, Xie Lian's confession in Mount Tong'lu and the very big sword made of Pei Ming, Mu Qing, Quan Yi Zhen and Feng Xin. Again, this top would probably change if I read the novel again now, but I need time :') Thank you so much for asking and sorry this came out this long........ I hope I didn't scare you asdfg :__

TGCF Book 3 Reaction pt. 6 - We are going to Mt. Tonglu!
hahaha. So, funny thing. I got impatient and just breezed though the last two books and consumed all of the post-canon content I could find. But, even though I have finished TGCF, that doesn’t mean I didn’t leave notes that I want in big chunks like this. So I will continue working on this
Even though I read the novel, I will stay true to my notes to the best of my abilities.
Ch 138: Xie Lian remembering that he threw his meatballs like bullets without any spiritual strength, like how he went about the past 800 years
- Me: Why do people not realize that Xie Lian is buff. Buff Xie Lian art, where?
Qi Rong turns out to be a better chef than Xie Lian. Like possible House Husband material
- Me: Yo. WTF. I call hack! How did- *remembering Qi Rong’s backstory*... Okay, but how did he learn and hone his skills?
Heaven’s Eye cultivator group about to chow down on some hair when Xie Lian steps in with the pebble toss
- Me: Xie Lian saving cultivators from committing c*nn*bal*sm
Ch 139: Hua Cheng builds a little golden palace outside and then kicks it. The shady inn illusion crashes as well.
- Me: Can this get animated?
Feng Xin mentioning of an ascension acceleration method with dead babies
- Me: Wait! What if Feng Xin’s ascension is the suspicious one instead of Mu Qing
Ch 140: Xie Lian finds Guzi to be sick and dehydrated.
Mama Bear Xie Lian - Awaken
- Me: Oh shit. Xie Lian is pissed at his cousin.
Ch 141: Learning about who the father to the fetus spirit is. Learning that the fetus spirit is named Cuo Cuo. Secrets around Cuo Cuo’s birth abundant
- Me: WAIT! HE HAD S*X WITH LAN CHANG. HE F*KED?!
Xie Lian reassuring Hua Cheng, but Hua Cheng turning it around to saying that his actions are up to him. Xie Lian feels something.
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng had a moment when suddenly they see someone sitting at the table making tea
- Me: No! Is it Jun Wu?
Jun Wu is pouring three cups of tea
- Me: He saw the intimate scene between the two
Red flower that slips on the edge of the flower pot is about to fall when Xie Lian caught it like it’s the most precious thing in the world
- Me: Foreshadowing???
Xie Lian basically saying that Heaven will fall if the Heavenly Emperor is dead. Xie Lian basically saying that Heaven is floating in the sky because of the Heavenly Emperor
- Me: Man, I really hope that the Heavenly Emperor doesn’t die and make Heaven crash onto the ground, only to be upheld by the power of Xie Lian and then create a parallel of that scene in book 2, or Atlus holding up the world.
Ch 143: Heaven and the Ghost Kings have a mutual beneficial relationship
Hua Cheng using this fact to exploit Heaven singing him praises for a year.
- Me: Cunning bastard. I would have asked for praises sung to me and Xie Lian if I was in his shoes
Mt. Tonglu has the Klin and both places is that one poisonous jar where the last poisonous creature that is alive after x amount of time is emerged as the victor.
- Me: Battle Royale to the death.
Xie Lian sneaks with Ghost as a Puppet Master
- Me: Oh, nice disguise
Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade says he can find if a ghost is suspicious
- Me: Okay, but what if you are the suspicious one?
Xie Lian crouches down to hid behind the 8-12 year old looking Hua Cheng
Hua Cheng as the “Puppet Master” disguise: “No one shall touch what I love except for me”
- Me: Impressive acting there
There is a cloaked figure that Hua Cheng says they are wearing a fake face
- Me: Is it Pei Ming?
Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade dies from one slash. Xie Lian making an observation that sounds like a joke
- Me: lol
Ch 14-Mt. Tonglu gate
Some ghost ladies get hurt and the cloaked stranger immediately asks: “Are my ladies alright?”
- Me: I was right. It was Pei Ming
Pei Ming about to tease Hua Cheng when Ruoye whips out to hit Pei Ming
- Me: I don’t know if that was all Ruoye or influence from Mt. Tonglue, but go Ruoye.
Pei Ming’s mysterious candy he got to disguise his spiritual powers is revealed to be shady candy made form Ghost City. Consuming the candy is the equivalent to rubbing skunk spray all over yourself.
- lol
E-Ming has been affected like Hua Cheng. It is now a small sword
- me: Cute
Pei Ming can sense the atmosphere around Hua Cheng and Xie Lian
The Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade turns out to be alive still. Both halves are moving freely
- Me: It’s still alive. how?!
Pei Ming is revealed to be the “General Who Snapped His Sword”
- Me: *Four Tales of Heaven Background Understanding Update*
Wine: 100% Understanding & Truth of Creation
Flower Crown: 100 50% Understanding of Creation & History -Second Ascension & Third Ascension are Unknown-
Princess: 15% Understanding of Identity & History
Sword: 25% & Growing...Processing backstory now
A giant savage, dark skinned burly man in broken armour appears
- Me: Wait. Do I know this character?
It is revealed to be Ke-Mo
Xie Lian pulls a trick on Swift Life-Extinguishing Blade/Ming’Guang and Pei Ming saw it work. The trick was actually the most vile swear word of the Banyue kingdom that is the most disrespectful insult ever.
- Me: What did the army teach you Xie Lian?
Xie Lian calls out for Banyue & Pei Su knowing that they are not at Mt. Tonglu as a tactic to distract Ke Mo
- Me: lol. What if they actually come after Xie Lian called them.
When things start to look good, Xie Lian calls out on it. It is immediately changes into a bad thing
Tiny E-Ming grows with praises from Xie Lian.
Pei Ming does a big brain and smashes E-Ming’s hit to Xie Lian’s lips. E-Ming grows to a very long scimar
- Me: Pei Ming caught on what Xie Lian didn’t. Also E-Ming reflect’s Hua Cheng, so, affection makes E-Ming grow. Hua Cheng
As Ke Mo and Ming’Guang are abotu to beat Xie Lian and Pei Ming, Banyu and Pei Su do that badass entry of jumping down a cliff and kicking the opponents.
- Me: lol, Banyue and Pei Su actually appeared.
Banyue throws a scorpion-snake at Ke Mo fully knowing what she is doing and the 200 years of mutual dislike is behind it.
- Me: Ultimate betrayal.
Banyue: We came here with Rain Master
- Me: Wait. Rain Master is here?
Ch 148: Xie Lian thinks that if he does the same things he did to E-Ming to help him grow, it will help Hua Cheng grow
- Me: Awe. So cute.
Ke Mo vs. Banyue & Pei Su - Round 2: Banyue is too embarrassed to throw her snakes again at Ke Mo. Pei Su swoops in and yeets a basket full at Ke Mo who screams at them
- Me: For some reason I find this scene really funny.\
Xie Lian: Moves into kiss Hua Cheng. He kisses the forehead and is sad about it.
Pei Ming learns that Banyue is that Banyue while she backs away from Banyue as Pei Ming comes close to her
- Me: Oh wait. Does Pei Ming still smell of those Ghost Candies?
It is revealed that Banyue is weary of Pei Ming because of the candy scent
- Me: Lol, it was the candy
Rain Master is brought up
- Me: *random thought* Does Rain Master & Pei Ming have some history together?
Rain Master is at Mt. Tonglu because Qi Rong stole some of her farmers.
Pei Ming is revealed to be the opposing General of the Rain Master
- Me: Oh, they do have some history together.
Xie Lian & Readers learn about the ‘Tale of the General Who Snapped His Sword’
- Me: LORE!
Sword: 75% Understanding
Ch 149: Pei Ming insults Banyue for not knowing how to cook like other females
- Me: General Pei, I understand that in your time that might have been a norm. But modern times that is different.
Xie Lian says he will teach Banyue how to cook
- Me: Oh no. Someone please stop them.
Banyue is holding a pot of food
- Me: Oh shoit. Did Banyue?
Ch 150: Banyue’s chicken meal is a black mass of questionable origins
- Me: *sob* it’s over. Banyue is now added to the list. But at least she took up her cooking skills after her adopted dad.
Pei Su takes the dubious food and eats it after watching Hua Cheng try some.
- Me: RIP Pei Su
Hua Cheng telling Xie Lian about the history of Mt. Tonglu while Pei Su is dying in the background. Banyue’s cooking somehow turned into a spirit or eldrich horror
- Me: *sob* please. You two are so adorable together, but someone (Pei Su) is literally dying from food poisoning. You are like that one pool meme
Pei Ming has given up on Pei Su to hang with the oblivious couple
Xie Lian has heard of Wuyoung before from his past while training to Ascension.
- Me: Oh. Interesting.
Little Xie Lian learned how to recite the Ethic Sutras like nothing because he was a curious child about a forgotten kingdom and the Guoshi made him shut up through sutras.
- Guoshi, how are you real?
Xie Lian: Pei Su is talking weird. Is it because of the Scorpion-Snake?
Banyue: Pei Su has immunity from them
-Me: God you two are so oblivious.
Ch 151: What if Jun Wu is from Wuyoung? Nah. He has a 500 year difference from then.
- Me: *Remembers Qi Rong calling Jun Wu a faker and thinks there is some truth in those words* What if he became an immortal 500 years before his ascension and just loitered around for 500 years until he achieved ascension status.?
The group is Scooby-Doo investigation with Ace Attorney observation skills on the temples. of the Kingdom of Wuyoung to learn why it fell
- Me: intersting. I hope they find something interesting.
-----
Alright. Going to stop there cause the actual journey to the Klin starts and it is a long journey where there is actually more than what I commented on. Man, I just really picked and choose what to highlight while reading

For the 'Give me a character' ask: Xie Lian ❤️
Oooo yay! Love my baby Lianlian, so here we go!
1.) How I feel about this character
Adore him to bits. I went into TGCF pretty blind and initially thought Xie Lian was cute, but a somewhat typical protagonist who is just really nice. But boyyy was I wrong! I very quickly and happily learned that there is SO MUCH to him, and that he's amazingly complex. He's also just really inspiring, with how his hardships did not completely break him (though it was close) -- and how he choses to do good. Even when it's hard for him, even when sometimes he doesn't want to, he still makes that choice actively, over and over and over again. That's really powerful to me. He's snarky in his own head, but polite outside because he knows how to talk to people! At the same time, he's not insincere -- he's quite genuine and earnest in how he feels, and means what he says. I just really came to like him as a character a lot more than I ever thought I would!💕
2.) All the people I ship romantically with this character
I only really ship Xie Lian with Hua Cheng, romantically. I do like a bit of unrequited love for him from Feng Xin and Mu Qing's side. Something which they'd ultimately let go of in the end, and becoming comfortable in their friendship, since they know how happy Xie Lian is now~
But as a bonus: I have "ships" that are like purely sexual though, such as JunLian (horror movie style) or even Pei Ming/Xie Lian (as a sort of threesome, where Hua Cheng is also involved, but only with Xie Lian). And of course some XianLe trio fun! But none of these I consider as like… actual ships, just funsies.
3.) My non-romantic OTP for this character
I REALLY love the relationship between Xie Lian and Mei Nianqing. Xie Lian had a crummy relationship with his father (and Jun Wu is Worst Father Figure Ever™) so I really always saw Mei Nianqing being the one who guided Xie Lian in that fatherly capacity. Even when exasperated, Mei Nianqing was ultimately very proud of Xie Lian and his ideals. But he was also terrified about what it would mean, and he tried his hardest to keep Jun Wu away. I imagine he was at wit's end trying to prevent Jun Wu from locking his sights onto Xie Lian, and when it still happened.… :( I wish we got to see more of Mei Nianqing and Xie Lian interacting together! 🥺
4.) My unpopular opinion about this character
Characters like Xie Lian who choose kindness -- yet make mistakes and stumble and fall along the way -- are some of the most interesting characters out there. They aren't boring because they're nice, because that "niceness" is a decision they're making. And oftentimes, it's the most difficult one. Xie Lian is also plenty snarky, he's just polite enough to keep it in his head! But I think he's one of the snarkiest characters in the book!😂
5.) One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon
I wish we got to see Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's wedding, or however they got married! ;u; But that's okay, we can imagine it for ourselves.
Thank you so much for asking this! I had a lot of fun!

Kiss Me and Promise a Forever
Aka Huang’s proposal fic because I just... love that bug man so much <3
Warnings: None
Words: 2082
The demon Huang Feng came to Oletus Manor upon his emperor's request, an occurrence that perhaps to many wouldn't be considered odd. What was odd however was that he was to investigate an unusual gathering of supposedly deceased souls congregating within the manor's walls, something that should never happen within the mortal realm. Still, it struck him as weird that he - one who's usual dealings were with the souls of insects - would be asked to do such a thing along with his collegue Wu Chang. Regardless he believed that everything would go smoothly; they'd travel to this manor, complete their job, and return back to the Underworld to carry on with their lives.
What he didn't expect however was to get caught up within the manor's mischief and meet her.
The woman seated neatly within his lap, leaning into him as she watches over the nearby forestry from their position on the roof. Huang was by no means a people person, especially not since that... incident, but there was something about this woman- this human even, that made him feel more safe and secure than he's ever been. It was a strange feeling falling in love with someone after being alone for so many hundreds of years, but it was a welcome warmth that he never knew that he needed in his life.
"You're staring at me again, lovebug~"
The sound of his lover's voice brings him straight back out of his thoughts; he had indeed been staring down at her, and now she was staring back up at him too- no longer facing the world but instead swiveled around to face him instead. Just when had she done that? Still, it was funny how she would always sense these types of things, even when he was still wearing his wasp mask. "S-sorry, I'll stop-"
His response is met with a lighthearted laugh, one that made his wings involuntarily twitch at the sound. "You don't need to apologise, Huang. You can stare at me for as long as you like," Both of Kirstin's hands trail up to each side of his mask, slowly removing it and placing it safely between them both before lightly running a finger along the markings lining one of his cheeks. "Although you have been doing it quite a lot today, is something on your mind?"
Now that was quite the loaded question, something was indeed 'on his mind'. Huang's thoughts had been scrambled for most of the day, and until he got what he needed off of his chest then they'd likely stay that way. He wanted tonight to be the night where he finally asked her to marry him.
Marriage as a whole isn't something that he is well acquainted with in the slightest; he had never had the chance to settle down back in his mortal life due to having to take care of his parents, and demons? Well, let's just say that not many of those were up for settling down, especially not with someone as reclusive as himself- to say that his chances were slim would be an understatement. Yet despite all those odds he was still able to find someone who he trusts completely with both his identity and heart, who he can be himself around without question.
Who he feels at home with…
He lowers his head down to rest his forehead against her own, a smile creeping across his lips as he speaks, "What's on my mind is nothing for you to worry about, tián xīn." A set of arms tightens slightly around her, a comforting embrace for the one he loves most in this world as his second set moves to cradle her face. After a few brief moments he draws his face up again, planting a kiss against the top of her head.
A few moments pass before Kirstin ends up responding, voice carrying a somewhat teasing tone, "Oh so there is something~" Bracing her hands against his chest she gently pushes away from him, just enough so that she can look up at him with a cheeky and knowing smirk, "Come on lovebug, fess up. You know that you can't keep anything from me- at least not for that long."
Her words draw out a quiet yet content sigh from Huang; what she said wasn't wrong in the slightest, ever since the two of them had become involved with each other he had been surprisingly open with her, to the point that she could read him like a book at times. It was virtually unheard of for him to allow himself to be known in such a way by another being, Xie Bi'an being the only other that he’s ever trusted enough. If there was one thing that he has managed to keep completely secret from her however, it was his engagement.
“I know. You’ve become quite good at reading me, haven’t you?” A small smile creeps across his lips, only growing slightly wider as he watches her give a surprisingly enthusiastic nod to his question- such a cutie she is… Should he just come right out and ask? It’s not as if she would ever turn him down- but then what if she did? Kirstin has every right to say no, especially since she was already married to another man; however, Joseph had come to realise that Huang’s love for her could lead to this situation, and he had (eventually) come to terms with it.
There was no way that he had the courage to do this… but he had to, otherwise this nagging feeling in his chest would never die down.
“B-but alright, I’ll tell you- that is on one condition.” As he speaks his voice is somewhat shaky, not really something that happens to him all that often despite his usual shy disposition. Regardless, he has a plan for dealing with this; perhaps not the best one that he can come up with quickly but it was at least something. Her reply comes just as quickly as his thoughts are racing.
“Sure, ask away.”
“Kiss me, that’s all I ask…” Huang can feel himself flushing at his own request, even though he’s said it so many times before- for a supposedly scary 6’7 demon he’s surprisingly soft.
Not a single word is said back, instead all Kirstin does in reply is softly smile at him and hook her arms around his neck whilst humming, pulling him down into a kiss; one that he returns with just as much fervour as a string of excited clicks can be heard coming from him. Within a matter of moments a set of the man’s arms are around her, hands nestling gently into his lover’s hair whilst his own smile tugs at the corner of his lips.
This is it… he’s going to do it.
With his remaining two unoccupied hands he fumbles around with the folds of his clothing until he finds what he’s looking for; that being the ring he’s going to use to propose. The ring that he had picked was one that he had found during one of his travels- a golden band with a dragonfly motif and emerald gemstone set into it’s centre, a ring perfectly befitting the lover of such a bug-like man. For the time being he keeps the ring behind his back, not quite ready to pop the big question just yet.
The two of them stay lost in each other’s embrace for a little while, neither of them wanting this moment to end; although eventually it does, both pulling away yet keeping their foreheads touching. “Wǒ ài nǐ…” Huang’s words are spoken barely above a whisper, his voice somehow even softer than usual with his affection and adoration on full display.
Her reply comes just as softly, “I know you do, I love you t-” But before Kirstin can finish her words he continues to speak.
“I…” He begins, face now almost completely flushed as the realisation of what he’s about to do finally starts to set in as his wings flutter behind him- a nervous habit that he’s picked up over the many years that he’s been in this form, “I don’t believe you realise j-just how much I mean that, ài rén.” Apprehensively he twiddles the ring between his hands, careful that the beating of his wings doesn’t knock it out of his grasp as he can’t help but avert his gaze from his love, “W-when I look at you like this, sat so close within my arms, I feel that all is right within this world; that by your side is where I belong.”
“Huang…”
“You- you have become a safe haven to me, someone who I can confide within and trust without question…I have never felt this way with another soul.” Mustering up the courage he glances back at her face; she’s hanging onto every word he says with rapt attention, he can even say that he sees the reflection of the night sky within her eyes- those things alone are more than enough to make him continue on, “You are very special to me Kirstin, more than I could ever say… which is why I wish to ask you something that is very important…” One of his free hands instinctively moves down to clutch at his mask which still remains between them, the prevalent blush on his face and beating of his wings only growing worse the longer he waits.
Psyching himself up one last time Huang removes his hands from behind his back, instead presenting his engagement ring to her with a nervous quickness, “W-will you marry me?”
Silence… at least for a few moments, after which a small and barely audible “Yes-” escapes past Kirstin’s lips- however Huang doesn’t quite catch her words, tilting his head to one side at seeing her lips move. His confusion doesn’t last long however as he’s basically tackled by her, thankfully managing to keep a tight hold on the ring whilst not tumbling off of the roof due to the force, “Yes yes YES I’ll marry you! I’d marry you a hundred times over if I could.”
Huang’s anxiousness soon melts away as he hears her words, taking some time to process them before his face lights up much like Kirstin’s has during this moment. “You will?” The sheer relief and happiness that he feels is conveyed heavily in his voice; letting go of his mask he moves away slightly and cups her face between two of his hands, peppering featherlight kisses all across her face as he can’t help the uncontrollable excited clicking that’s coming from him. His now-fiancés only response to his actions is to laugh, finding his reactions to her answer more than adorable.
“I-I shall be the best husband that you could ask for, I swear to you.” Despite his outward demeanour his words are still as softly spoken as always, second set of hands taking one of hers into his own before slipping the ring onto one of her fingers.
The smile that’s present on Kirstin’s face never falters for a second, even as she snuggles back into Huang’s chest once again with a content sigh, “You don’t need to promise me that, you know…” Her next words are quiet, partially muffled against his kimono, but luckily the demon can make them out, “I’ve always thought that you’d make for an amazing husband personally.”
The blush that returns to his face speaks louder than any of his words ever could, this time all four of his arms coming to hold her against him in a warm and loving embrace- choosing not to verbally respond to his lover’s musings and instead savour the moment.
To think that he had been so nervous about tonight when in reality there really was no need for it; this woman loves him unconditionally for who he is, all of the mistakes that he may have made in the past never affected how she saw him, not then and most certainly not now… and this same woman is now going to be his future wife, it really is remarkable how things can turn out.
However, those kinds of thoughts can wait for another day. Right now the only thing that is on Huang’s mind is getting to spend the rest of this night under the stars with his beloved…
The rest of the world can survive just a little longer without the two of them for now.

Every Cdrama I’ve Ever Watched Rated by Villains
Bc I want to rate shows by arbitrary standards today. It’s been a while.
(Here “every cdrama I’ve ever watched” will only include dramas I’ve currently finished.)
Ancient Detective--I can barely remember who the villains were. You’d expect a wuxia show with a lot of campy characters to have really memorable villains but somehow it just didn’t, maybe bc we were supposed to be kept guessing who the villains were for most of it. Anyways the best characters were all good to neutral. 1.5/10 for villainy, only granting the .5 bc teeeechnically there’s that last minute twist which makes a really good character teeeeechnically a villain. (...like, is he though? does that really count? idk.)
The Disguiser--How does a show encompass both Wang Tian Feng and Wang Man Chun and still have room for minor villains like Nantian or Section Chief Liang? idk. Anyways this show is v good with villains, 10/10 for ruthless spies.
The Flame’s Daughter--Villains both campy and conflicted. Everyone has some sort of tragic backstory, some more relatable than others. Good characters go bad! Bad characters go good! Some characters kind of wobble back and forth because of difficult circumstances! Some characters are bad the whole time but they have relatives who care about them or who they want to protect so you still feel bad when bad things happen to them! 10/10 for variety and for complex relationships and for vibrant color scheme (you gain points with me when your villains don’t just wear black and gray).
Granting You a Dreamlike Life--Most of the villainous characters in this show, such as Xu Rui An and all the Japanese villains, were pretty standard and boring. Duan Tianci could have been a great possessive awful not-love-interest but he just doesn’t have the chance to do much, and we’re expected to act like Duan Tianying’s dad isn’t a villain when he’s clearly acting like one. But on the other hand, there’s Xu Xingcheng, who is an excellent awful ex. His corruption arc was basically the highlight of the second half of the show. So, 5/10?
Handsome Siblings--The two MCs are antagonists to each other but I’m not counting either one as a villain bc hey at least they mean well, and they do get over it. Anyways, even aside from that, the sheer range this show has in campy villainy is beautiful. Ppl who just want to find hidden martial arts manuals. Ppl who live for revenge. Ppl who love gambling and will force other ppl to gamble at swordpoint. Ppl who keep underground palaces full of enslaved pretty boys. Random bandits. Ppl who have been given the title “villain” and have just embraced it as their identity. Actually reputable ppl who are secretly scum and have committed mass murder. And of course all of them will laugh evilly and gloat about having defeated you or rave at you for your audacity. Beautiful, exquisite, 10/10, the villains on this show are in fact the point. If you don’t like campy villains then don’t watch this show.
Joy of Life--If you asked me to name the villains of this show I probably could come up with a couple, but mostly everyone’s morally gray, which I suppose is interesting in its own way. But not going to get it a high villainy rating on this scale. 5/10 with an extra point added for Xiao En (is he even a villain tho??).
Love Is More Than a Word--The villains in this show are boring, which is a bit sad when you’re technically a mystery show. 1/10.
Nirvana in Fire--Some ppl like Xie Yu but for me he’s the most boring role I’ve seen Liu Yi Jun play. Xia Jiang’s kind of just despicable. The Empress and Noble Consort Yue are eh. The Emperor feels human and relatable (in a “I understand why you do what you do even though I don’t agree” kind of way) and yet you still hate him so that’s pretty fun. Banruo and Prince Yu could be the main antagonists of a show and if they were the main antagonists of this show, well, the show probably wouldn’t be as good but it would rate higher on villainy bc I love them. Tragic Hua backstory, and also just Prince Yu being affable and kind of stressed all the time--you want to rub his back and say “there there” and then he goes off and kills people and you’re like NO WHY. 8/10.
Sword Dynasty--A better Liu Yi Jun role. This show was overall pretty bad but the scheming villainous royal couple were the best part of it and are the only reason I managed to finish it tbh. Did Ye Zheng ever really love Xuan Wu? Does Xuan Wu really love Ye Zheng? Is there any world where they could be a happy couple and trust and be loyal to each other when they have the ghost of their murdered former friend between them? There’s no answer to these questions, but these two raised the most adorable son and ruled a flourishing country together for years. They’re bloodthirsty, power-hungry backstabbers but I ended up wanting good things for them :( of course things don’t end well. 7/10, tho I ended up super invested in this relationship it’s barely explored in the first half of the show.

Dance of the phoenix - Episode 14
Tumblr media
So I have been busy job hunting lately as my flight attendant job isn’t going to resume anytime soon. But I am so ready for episode 14. In episode 13, Feng Wu tried to steal the vase together with Yu Mingye and they were found out by Jun Linyuan and mister Yan. Well almost. Jun Linyuan must have his doubts that his beloved one is inside since he found her pouch and he’s going to go in the secret chamber alone first. That was a big cliffhanger.
Of couse. They have to show us Jun Linyuan goin in, but swutching the scene to Feng Xun on his way to save miss Feng. Yu Mingye humiliated Feng Liu for bullying Feng Wu and Feng Xun thinks is extremely funny. At first he’s not going to save her but he ends up doing it anyways, but still while teasing her. He comforts her a little, but is really happy about the whole situation overall.
Yu Mingye takes the vase, it’s what Feng Wu is looking for, but she needs a way to keep it. Is Feng Wu going to steal stuff away during the whole drama? Yu Mingye wonders why she’s so anxious that Jun Linyuan would see them together and she says she doesn’t want to make him unhappy. And tells him once again that she’s not interested in him like that. He then asks her wether she wants the vase too and she says she just wants to look at it because it’s pretty. I see a pattern getting on. Well that’s when Jun Linyuan comes out and asks the same question to her. They try to pretend that Yu Mingye kidnapped her but he heard everything they said. He tells Yu Mingye that the best way to get out of this is to keep acting. Because even if Yu Mingye manages to escape, Feng Liu is still there. So they pretend to fight and break everything. Jun Linyuan must like her a lot. And he would totally have been BFF with Yu Mingye He helps him escape with the secret exit. Then he asks Feng Wu if she has any contact with the darknight court. He’s angry at her for doing this behind his back. Poor baby he looks more hurt than angry honestly. He lets FEng Wu go too before he closes the exit again. Jun Linyuan pretends he didn’t manage to catch them.
Feng Wu goes back to the party and madam Yan and madam Ning are really happy to see her and seem to dislike Zuo Qingluan. Jun Linyuan tells her that mister Yan cares the most about his relationship with his wife. Lately there have been rumours that the baby might be from out of wedding, so it hurt the relationship. So Feng Wu suggests to test the magic potential of the kid to prove the paternity. Mister Yan isn’t so willing, but madam Yan agrees because she trusts Feng wu. She asks for Jun Linyuan’s help in doing so. They manage to prove that the kid has spiritual energy and Madam Yan is so grateful. Zuo Qingluan praises her and wants to be friends. Nope, you won’t trick me. You just want to keep your ennemy glose to you.
Yu Mingye takes a beating from his dat. Tha lord is quite scary indeed. Poor Yu Mingye. He breaks my heart so much.
Jun Linyuan got th vase, but before giving it to Feng Wu, he needs to know why she wants it. But she can’t tell that Mu Jiuzhou is her master and that she needs it to wake him up. That’s going to cause so much trouble in their relationship, with all that lying. He said he should get a gift too because it was also his birthday and he tells her that if she manages to get enrolled in the Junwu Academy, as his birthday gift, he might give her the vase. He’s outsmarting her.
Zuo Qingluan tries to convince Zhaoge to get into the Junwu Academy too, but she’s more interested in being happy for Feng Wu and has no. confidence in her spiritual energy. But then she worries she wouldn’t be able to see Feng Wu everyday so she wants to get in too. Zuo Qingluan tells er to move with her, so she can train her, but Zhaoge tells her to keep her distance. They grew up together, but Zhaoge doesn’t want to have anything to do with the Celestial palace, because they all gave up on her while she was cursed. Zuo Qingluan doesn’t get to explain she also looked for a remedy. But you know, she knew about the Peerless Tower, but she wouldn’t try because she didn’t want to risk her own future for someone else. And that’s where Feng Wu is by far superior to her. She will fight for what’s right and for those she loves.
Jun Linyuan pays a visit to Yu Mingye, he wants to take the music sheets away but ends up not taking them. They would so have been friends. I need their friendship to bloom through adversity at some point. But when he’s about to leave, Yu Mingye names Feng Wu in his sleep so Jun Linyuan gets jealous and draws on his face.
The Empress heard of Feng Wu and figures she’s the girl Jun Linyuan is thinking of as his spiritual princess. She doesn’t want her to be next to Jun Linyuan.
Feng Wu goes to see Jun Linyuan because she made him a birthday cake. That’s adorable. He doesn’t understand why she lights up a candle in bright daylight and she tells him to stop questioning it and make a wish, but he won’t tell her what it is. I really like how Feng Wu always spurts some stuff she’s not supposed to know about in the context of the drama. She asks him why he didn’t say anything about his birthday earlier. For him it’s not a happy day. Because his mother died on the day he was born. I knew the empress wasn’t his mom! She comforts him by saying that since he still remembers his mom, she’s still here, in this world. At the end of the day she sends him to Feng Xun’s place because he’s drunk. She tries to search him for the vase and he hugs her, telling her not to go. She says she won’t leaving. Even though she doesn’t know what the future holds for them.
The next morning she’s massaging his temples and made him breakfast. She gives him a birthday gift too. It’s an animated book. He tells her to pass the entrance exam to get the vase. And that’s it for episode 14.
So this arc is now going to be about her getting into the Junwu Academy. I hope the empress won’t give her too much trouble to deal with. I really love the development of the story so far. It’s fresh. Their love interest is also coming in a different way then what we usually get to see and that’s nice too. Somethings have been predictable, but in general they still manage to surprise me which I like a lot. I’m looking forward episode 15. But that will be for tomorrow.

So far you seem to be a expert on the show and it’s lore I have to ask was aang written to bro always right in the show? Some people complain he was never called out for being in the wrong
No, that’s ridiculous. Aang was wrong plenty of times, and the show definitely acknowledged it.
What may be confusing for some people, though, is that AtLA wavered a bit on how much of a Kiddie Show it wanted to be. Sometimes we got dialogue that was very direct in a “X was wrong” style, complete with polite apologies. Other times, the show trusted us to understand less obvious cues and didn’t bother showing the characters reconcile.
But don’t take my word for it. Let’s list every single episode where the story treats Aang as being in the wrong in a major way.
101/102 - Aang covers up being the Avatar to Katara and Sokka, leading to his not being trusted by the Tribe, exiled, and having to save the Tribe from Zuko.
104 - Aang lets his head get swelled from all the adoration on Kyoshi Island, leading to drawing Zuko to the island, getting the village burned, and having to return to save the village using the Unagi. He even apologizes to Katara about it.
105 - It’s portrayed as funny, but I think the treatment is that Aang is wrong to do the whole sledding-through-the-city thing. It causes havoc and gets the gAang arrested. The show just doesn’t care all that much, because this is a generally silly episode, and one of the most childish. And the chaos is pretty amusing.
108 - Aang is definitely wrong in trying to confront Hei Bai before he understands what’s going on.
110 - The focus is on Katara, but Aang is also wrong to trust Jet despite Sokka’s suspicions.
113 - Aang was portrayed, I think, as overconfident up to getting captured by the Yu Yan archers. He only got away because of the Blue Spirit rescue.
114 - Aang’s preoccupation with love and his blind trust in Aunt Wu’s predictions (alongside Katara) is definitely portrayed as childish and troublesome. It’s just not a big deal because they luck into an early warning. Note, however, that Aang fails to make the progress with Katara that he wants.
115 - This episode could have been named ‘Aang is totally wrong for thinking that Katara and Sokka would abandon him, and his lying was definitely a mistake.’ But I guess ‘Bato of the Water Tribe’ is shorter.
116 - Again, Aang being wrong about the way he sees Firebending as a toy is the primary plot of this episode. The ‘some people’ who complain about Aang never being wrong must have skipped the back-half of Book Water.
117 - Hey, look at that, Aang is wrong for not wanting to share the temple with Teo’s people. However, I can see where idiots would be confused by this episode, because for all that it can get a bit Kiddie with things like slime bombs, it does have The Mechanist being a complicated dude who destroys Air Nomad culture willy-nilly and works with the Fire Nation under duress. However, that doesn’t make Aang’s initial grumpiness right. The ending the episode is clear that Aang learns a lesson in allowing others to inherit the temple.
201 - Aang is wrong to trying to exploit the Avatar State, and also trusting General Fong. For all that Fong has a point about the needs of the war, Aang shouldn’t try to blindly rush access to the Avatar State.
205 - This is a very silly episode, like ‘The King of Omashu,’ in which even mistakes are treated as lighthearted fun. But I do think the episode treats Aang as wrong for having blind trust in Kyoshi and submitting himself to Chin Village’s justice system. The episode does end, after all, as a kind of “Shaggy Dog Story” with the hard-won friendship of the village leading only to gross food. Chin Village didn’t even send any fighters for the Day of Black Sun!
208 - Aang’s yelling at Toph is treated as bad. Sokka even calls him a jerk for it, and doesn’t get any Universe-sent backlash in return! Whoa!
209 - I’m not sure about this one. Aang is portrayed as over-eager and a bit full of himself, only to get depressed and quit. Is the show treating that as “wrong,” though? I’m not sure, but I do think he is deliberately characterized as Prideful, which is consistent with how he’s always been a show-off with his powerful Bending. I think this episode shows a flaw of Aang’s in action, without a trite lesson attached, but is that him being “wrong?”
210 - Again, this episode portrays a complicated situation, so I can see less thoughtful audiences not getting it, but Wan Shi Tong does have a good point that Aang and company lied and were only interested in finding ways of destroying their enemies. The Day of Black Sun invasion doesn’t even pay off, so I think the narrative considers the whole thing to be a mistake, and Aang should have heeded the owl’s warning in the beginning.
211 - Aang is definitely portrayed as being something of an antagonist with his attitude as Katara tries to get everyone through the desert. Yes, Aang is grieving Appa, but he’s handling his grief in a terrible manner, a subplot that continues into the next episode.
212 - Aang is wrong to give up on hope. That’s right in the dialogue.
218 - It’s been a long stretch without Aang being wrong about anything important, but obviously he (and the rest of the gAang) are mistaken about Long Feng being a solved problem.
219 - This is so complicated that even I’m not sure of what the storytellers want us to think about everything, but at the very least, Aang is portrayed as wrong to rush off to rescue Katara without completing his training. (It’s a big Star Wars allusion to a moment when Luke is wrong to go after Vader, so I consider myself safe in drawing that conclusion.) Aang partially addresses it in the next episode, but that also gets complicated.
220 - Hey, maybe if Aang had really completed his training, he would have more control of the Avatar State and Azula wouldn’t be able to shoot him with a move that takes forever to set up.
301 - Yeah, that whole prideful Running Away (On a Wind-Board, Yay!) To (Somehow) Solve Everything Myself is obviously a bad idea. He doesn’t even put a shirt on first.
303 - For all that the episode does treat Katara (and by extension Aang) as a hero, it shows that they really need Sokka’s help and consideration in order to avoid doing more harm than good with their antics. Both sides are a little bit wrong and a little bit right in this episode.
307 - Aang joins in with Toph’s scamming, which leads to trouble. And the episode even goes out of its way to have Aang forget (with Sokka) that Toph can’t write when they triy to fake that note to Katara. I think we’ve established that the series isn’t afraid to show Aang as wrong, but this is notable for portraying him as really stupid, too. ;)
308 - Minor case, but Katara, and by extension Aang, obviously shouldn’t trust creepy Hama. It’s heartbreaking, though.
310/311 - So, that whole Day of Black Sun thing doesn’t really work out, huh? The episode even draws attention to the fact that Aang still hasn’t mastered the Avatar State and there will probably be fallout from that. Obviously it was a huge mistake from the beginning, losing Aang even more of his allies. He has to flee into the horizon with sad eyes.
312 - I mean, the episode’s sympathies obviously lie with Zuko. It’s understandable that the gAang doesn’t trust him, but they’re still wrong about him.
313 - Again, Aang’s fear of Firebending is understandable, but something he needs to reverse himself on.
317 - Attending the Ember Island Players’ performance is a big mistake, no? ;)
319 - Aang is wrong in temporarily thinking that he needs to give up on his beliefs and kill Ozai. I think this episode is what most critics of Aang think of when they complain that he’s never wrong, but that’s because those people don’t have any understanding of spirituality and are trying to impose their own cynicism on the story. It’s fine to disagree with the story’s message, but turning that into a critique of the writing around Aang is disingenuous.
So, there we are. A whole long list of Aang Being Wrong. Feel free to share it in any debates, but don’t expect this to change anyone’s mind. The argument probably never came from an honest place from the start.

Just finished watching The Legend of Hei. Complicated thoughts, lots of feelings. In this era of climate change, it really does hit home. What are your thoughts on Feng Xi? It was hard to come to a definite conclusion about him - which is, of course, the point. His vengeance, well, wrong word, his choices, are legitimate, but also inexcusable. That massive subversion of the found family trope, though, and also its fulfillment. Your thoughts on the movie? you always have interesting thoughts.
Spoilers for Legend of Hei
Hello! I really enjoyed Legend of Hei, it gave lots of Feelings indeed. I really loved the dynamic and magical and yet realistic world Legend of Hei created. Things are silently complicated beneath the fun and simple cross country story we’re following with the main characters Xiao Hei and Wu Xian. Like we’re just seeing one bit of a really huge picture. The world feels rich, even though the story is simple. There are a lot of hints throughout that things are not great...but people keep living, you know? (The Legend of Hei movie is supposed to be a prequel to the 2011 web series, but I’m going to ramble about it as a standalone film.)
In the world of Xiao Hei, there exist demons, humans and gods (Nezha should technically still be a god/deity in this verse, right?) -- we get the sense that we’ve gone past the point of all other magical chinese stories. This feels like the world where Legend of the White Snake, Journey to the West, Nezha, investiuture of the Gods, etc all happened in shang dynasty or tang dynasty or other time in history -- but now it’s the present. It’s 2019 and demons and humans coexist. There are demons working at florists delivering flowers, collecting books for libraries, and generally living their life normally. There are demons who live in the Guild Hall, a floating palace in the sky that’s a place of their own, and demons who are basically registered cops (or ‘enforcers’). There’s a central government for demons by demons. And there are also demons who are on the run from the demon law and the demon cops. What I love about Legend of Hei is that demons aren’t straight up bad like usual -- they’re just like humans.
“It was hard to come to a definite conclusion about Feng Xi - which is, of course, the point.” -- Yes, exactly :) Feng Xi was absolutely destroyed by watching his idyllic, natural hometown get bulldozed and industrialised into a big city, so he was driven by vengeance to get his home back. I agree with everything you said about him, only have one thing to add:
One big detail I caught about him was in the very beginning. Those humans who started smashing up boxes and going through trash to bash up Xiao Hei as a cat. How did they know there was a cat there? Why did they want to spend time messing with a stray cat? Didn’t they seem strange to you? Their glazed over eyes, their speechlessness, their efficient trash bashing. Don’t they remind you of -- maybe those train guys that got mind controlled by the blond haired, beanie wearing demon? The humans waiting in line who went slack and emotionless when mind controlled?
After seeing that train scene, the very beginning of the movie can be re-contextualised. I think that Feng Xi manipulated that entire beginning scenario. He had his mind controlling subordinate in the shadows controlling those humans to scare Xiao Hei. Then he jumped out at the last moment to save Xiao Hei from the humans he set on him. Feng Xi fabricated that entire scene to stoke hate of humans in a cat to fit his agenda, so he could secure Xiao Hei’s loyalty. It’s very smart of him, and also very dangerous. Cos we all loved him, he was charming and kind and he played us all for fools! The massive subversion of the found family trope was so great and I never saw it coming.
After working that out, Feng Xi painfully ripping away Xiao Hei’s powers later made total sense to me. His character is, somewhat surprisingly, characterised by ruthlessness. Nothing meant more to him than expelling the humans from his hometown. Not even that one human who was helping demons. Not even the lives of other demons. Not even a little cat boy who loved and looked up to him. Feng Xi was HARD CORE. He was HARD CORE even amongst his own group - “Feng Xi! Don’t do it! Let me talk to him- let me!” And that’s why I love him, cos he’s an awesome, layered ecoterrorist for this cute, cute movie.
Feng Xi’s justifiably angry and vengeful, but normal humans going to work from 9-5 aren’t morally responsible for his losses. That’s what Xiao Hei learns while walking among humans -- they’re just other people trying to find their way. Xiao Hei sees that girl on the train, “thanks, little bro,” and realises they’re much the same. His experiences have changed and matured him, but Feng Xi clings to his prejudice and loss.
(I don’t remember his name, but the blue demon with the ponytail was so adorable and he pretty much said what I said above but better^. ‘I used to have a gorgeous cave home that I lived in for thousands of years! It was so beautiful. But then the humans moved in and turned my home into a park. Then I had to pay entry tickets. So I had to move.’ Like, what a story, old boy. Life’s like that. But do remember he said thousands of years -- it’s hard for demons because of the different time scale they live on. That said, he didn’t go awol and try to deport all humans from the park.)
Even then, no one is saying everyone has to hold hands and be best friends. Wu Xian seems to be the only human enforcer working at the demon govt, and he’s like hated for that XD. He doesn’t even step into the Guild Hall because other demons feel threatened by him. Demons can live among everyone else, or they can go and be in their own enclaves. Things are troubled in the supernatural world, there’s always going to be people who don’t like you, but hey, each to their own. Wu Xian’s still got his own demon buddies and Xiao Hei who do like him.
Feng Xi also extra-hated Wu Xian because of what he stood for to him -- Wu Xian is a human able to directly go against Feng Xi. Because he’s powerful. Because he is human authority. Because he is hunting demons like dogs. But even this view dips the second we see what Wu Xian works for -- and see that Feng Xi is pretty much just going against other demons/ the demon government. We get that Wu Xian went after him and his group for a reason, that he must have done other things in the past to warrant enforcers going after him. That Xiao Hei has been caught up in something much bigger. It’s just very smart re-contextualising.
Anyhow, now that you put me in a mood I’ll do some more Legend of Hei posts -- I’m like ‘oh dang, someone other than me saw it :D’ Glad to discuss with you.

Episode 17 & 18
EPISODE 17 IS A BAD EPISODE WORST EPISODE BECAUSE THEY KILL ZHU YIN FOR LITERALLY NO REASON.
*angry noises *
ok *deep breath *
-Such an A+ conversation between XZ and Ning Yi, where Ning Yi is totally focused on rescuing Feng Zhiwei while  XZ is completely focused on how they can bring down Ning Chuan, now that they know the Blood Pagoda faction was hiding in Qingming Academy (which, btw, WHAT THE FUCK Ziyan??? They were there 18 years!!! Of course, in his defense, we don’t know when XZ became head of Qingming, it may have been in the last 5-10 years. STILL.)
Anyways, that’s when we get that great line”Are you going to let one single pawn destroy your Go board”
OOOOPS.
- Honestly, there was no need for Zhu Yin’s death- just convenient for manpain purposes- UGH. Also, XZ’s reaction- which is to immediately ask “why??” instead of being like distressed about her death is nicely consistent with his persona. How many people does XZ actually care for? Fewer than Ning Yi, apparently.
Also, I 100% believe that XZ doesn’t try very hard to find Feng Zhiwei and rescue her, because he’s hoping that Bloody Pagoda and the Crown Prince will solve that problem for him, without him having to do anything about it- if he did something himself, it is clear that the Prince of Chu will break with him, and he can’t afford that.
-Ning Yi actually yelling at his men to go get Feng Zhiwei- an excellent touch- we never actually see him behave with anything less than courtesy, and usually with a lot more friendliness with his subordinates, so when he yells, they’re like WOW SERIOUS BUSINESS.
-Ning Yi’s handling of Official Wu’s spying- again, nice touch. He’s able to read people as well as be compassionate about them, especially if they are in subordinate positions, which is, in general, a talent the other brothers absolutely lack.
-Feng Zhiwei’s willingness to take responsibility for the stableboy’s death- her honour code is SO STRONG. Again, as I said, the writers’ end decision re: her fate is making more sense to me now, as one possible ending for that character even though it actually breaks my heart. Because, I’ll say it again, with that kind of character, what should have happened is that after her family’s unjust death, she should have become the leader of a rebellion against Tiansheng- not just for personal revenge, but for bringing down an unjust and cruel empire. And really, they had entirely set up the background for that- Feng Zhiwei’s acquiring of friends/allies, her demonstrated capability in administration and military, her strong moral code- all of this set was RIGHT THERE, and they didn’t go for it, for reasons that idk, may have to do with budget or network or something- I just don’t get it. :/
-”Little cat” has nine lives- WHY CAN’T THIS BE THE FORESHADOWING SHOW. SHE BARELY USED UP- WELL, MAYBE FIVE- BUT STILL SHE HAD PLENTY LEFT FOR THAT LAST ONE TO BE COMPLETELY FAKE.
also oh no, Ning Yi taking the hair ornament which he thinks is the only thing he has left of her- nicely ties in with the hair ornament he makes for her later, in Minhai. GODDAMMIT SHOW, WELL PLAYED.
THE NEXT FIVE MINUTES ARE JUST PURE PAIN AND SHIP JOY/PAIN
“They died because of me”
“But you’re still alive”
And that argument is repeated at least two times.
like, Ning Yi feels guilt over their deaths, especially Zhu Yin’s, but right now the one thing that he most cares about is that she’s alive
and honestly, that, right there is the fundamental disconnect between their world views, I think? Like Ning Yi is a royal, and one result of that upbringing is to fundamentally see the world in a hierarchy, and themselves as the top of that. e He is this person who puts all his love and devotion on specific people who are worthy of that love- his mother, Ning Qiao and now Feng Zhiwei.  And if they are necessary to him, then by extension they are necessary in the world. And of course, the traumatized child in him knows only too well how they can be snatched away from him, hence his desperation, when Feng Zhiwei is taken from him. Of course he would, then, do anything to keep her with him.
But Feng Zhiwei who’s been brought up as a commoner-  or perhaps as a result of her training with Master Zong, and her experiences as the “unwanted relative”- for her, her individual life has no greater value than anyone else’s life. She has very fundamentally egalitarian views of the world, which Ning Yi doesn’t. Oh, he wants to improve the system from within- but at no point does he want to overthrow the entire structure. And yet, I do think, if Feng Zhiwei had been given the means that Ning Yi has, she would have.
-Listen the whole drama around the “Ultimate Scholar” was OTT, but forever let us remember Ning Yi crying about Feng Zhiwei hitting it out of the park
LOOK  AT THIS FACE IT’S LIKE HE CAN’T HIDE HOW MUCH HE ADORES HER FOR EVERYTHING SHE IS HE IS LITERALLY IN TEARS
