15 questions for 15 followers
@thatonetimetraveller has questions...I have answers...thanks for the tag <3
Are you named after someone?
Why yes...
I'm named after a character in a book/film. The character in the film was played by someone with the same first name. It's a fantasy story, a time-travelling ghost I suppose would be the best way to summarize. Film was from 1948; book from 1940; story based in the depression era.
The thing is, it's a name that happens to be the most popular name that was like this many *spreads arms out* years running, so the assumption is just my parents were hipsters of the day, going with the same thing as everyone else.
The truth is, they had the names Christopher and Miranda picked out; when the fam heard of the name Miranda, displeasure was announced. So then my parents were like, nah, okay, we'll think of something else...
But then I was suddenly, like, hewwo world!, and I arrived ON TIME (like, the only time ever really) TO THE DAY (I have confirmation on my begetting day, which is kind of cool), so as my mom was in the hospital room and things were happening and my arrival was like NOW...the movie was playing on the TV in the room, and my parents decided it was a good name, soooooo...
I am named after the title character in Portrait of Jennie (not the 70s and 80s fad, strangely enough). A cute but creepy child ghost time traveler who grows up and falls in love with an artist.
Now - fun additional fact - I did actually marry an artist who is in fact more than a handful of years older. Fate be like that.
My middle name comes from my grandmother on my father's side.
2. When was the last time you cried?
Today when I found out that Murphy the Eagle who has been trying to hatch a rock for the longest time is now getting to be a dad to an orphaned eaglet. Don't let your dreams be dreams, Murphy!
3. Do you have kids?
I have three floofs and a feathered friend. Also a fox that lives in my yard and poops on top of my shed. (Relevant because we are currently looking for a roofer for our garage, and the roofers keep letting me know there's a pile of poop on top of the shed and I have to explain this isn't a prank.) This is a third generation fox. This fox lives with a giant orange outdoor cat.
Indoor floofs are Angry Old Lady Cat (Oreo - she'll be 20 soon, so in human years, that's like 180 or something, she's allowed to be angry at everyone who isn't me or Smaug), Cat Who Thinks Is Dog (General Patters - that beautiful asshole might knock shit off tables and sneeze on me, but twice a day like clockwork he's on his perch for his meds, doesn't fight them, comes when called, and sits on command), Doggo Who Has No Brakes (Princess Paige - she was born blind, but a rough tough cream puff who is braver than most animals I know, and is easily bribed by hotdogs and cookies), and Felix. Felix is a lovebird who turned 23 this month. He's a solo fella since 2018, and he's living his best life (and still blows my mind when I think of historical world events that happened in the last twenty years... like, PJ's LOTR trilogy is over 20 years old, but what's older? Dis birb.)
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
No. I also don't always understand sarcasm. I have had times when it's thought I am using sarcasm and I'm not. But I can write it, when it's written I know what it is when I see it. Usually.
I do appreciate, growing up, that my dad could tell when I was confused and would let me know sarcasm was in use. That helped.
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
Their voice. Many physical things can change; voices usually stay the same, so I try to key into voices, and that helps me remember people better later. (And yes, that means communicating on the internet is like this wild party with the sound muted and I'm wandering around sometimes wondering 'do I know you?' This is part of why I really, really like Discord servers with open voice chat channels in them. I appreciate Discord mods who have vc as an option in their servers so much.)
6. What's your eye colour?
Officially, listed as brown. Technically, hazel. Just like the car I drive, as long as they work, I don't care what color they are.
7. Scary movies or good endings?
Sometimes you can have both.
8. Any special talents?
A couple nights ago, I found out I can write different words with each hand simultaneously. Apparently that seems pretty strange to those with whom that information was shared. I guess if people read this and reply in the comments that this isn't rare, then I'll have to find another talent. (Can also write stories while singing completely unrelated songs. This is allegedly another oddity. We joke at work that I am a dual core processor.)
9. Where were you born?
In the city I now live again after several life detours.
10. What are your hobbies?
All of them.
11. Do you have any pets?
Please see the question about my children.
12. What sports do you play/have played?
You mean all the ones they forced me to in gym class, or just the electives?
Okay, on purpose, I played softball (catcher mostly - I have large hands >.> moving right along), did some archery, and kickboxed.
I also was on the tennis team for one day. I broke my wrist during the first practice tripping over a racket someone left on the ground behind me. Clearly not one of my finer moments.
Additionally, I'm part of an ongoing game of tag that dates back to 2016. I'm currently it. That counts, right?
13. How tall are you?
I'm taller than average, but I'm still shorter than all of my siblings, and being the eldest, I don't want to talk about it. #Fingon-mood
14. Favorite subject in school?
Elementary: Geography; Math Middle School: History; Science; Any Hands-on class (carpentry, art, sewing, etc.) High School: Orchestra, Jazz Band; German College: Copyright Law; Animation/Film But overall, any time I got to use a computer, program a computer, take apart a computer, build a computer, etc... I was there first. I used to constantly sign up for Saturday morning computer time at the elementary school. My poor mother, having to take me to the school on the bus on Saturday mornings, and I'd be this little first grader sitting there plunking away at BASIC or playing the Snoopy game while the 6th-8th graders were typing up papers and doing serious business.
15. Dream job?
I am living the dream

The more I try and actually write a long piece for Lalwen the more frustrated I get about how little I have to go off.
We know her name (father name is Írimë, mother name Lalwendë), what her name means (Írimë probably = desirable/ lovely. Lalwendë = laughing maiden). We know she goes by ‘Lalwen’ a shortened form of her mother-name. We know her birth order (third child and second daughter). We know one decision she made (going into exile) and who her favorite relative is (Fingolfin). THATS IT.
Like. This is so much more than we have for some other female characters (including her own older sister). But! So! Little!
We can make some conjectures; for example Aredhel was probably named after her. (Írissë meaning ‘Desirable Lady’ v Írimë meaning ‘desirable/ lovely’). She might have gone into exile because she loved Fingolfin a lot. She laughed a lot (her name). She preferred that name- why? Is it because it came from her mother instead of her father? She is the only one of her siblings to go by her mother name over her father name except for Fëanor. She’s also the only one without a reference to either parent in either of her names. What does this say about her relationship to them? She’s also the only to not Sindarinize her name (because it already fit Sindarin) even when she could have gone by the direct translation- Glaðwen or Gladhwen. Speaking of; ð and þ are very similar sounds- ( ‘th’ is used for both but þ is voiceless while ð is voiced)- so what does not using a name that could have a ‘th’ sound say about her relationship to Fëanor?
Those are just questions about her life in Valinor! We straight up do not know what happened to her. She could still be chilling in middle earth when lotr and the hobbit happens! She obviously doesn’t get mentioned in either but then again neither do the blue wizards (just an example of characters who could be important and have important counterparts just vanishing into the depths of middle earth). We just don’t know. What where her hobbies? Did she marry? Have kids? (I personally adore headcanoning Gil-Galad as her son).
We can make a few wide assumptions based solely on the fact that she’s a Finwean- lines like “… [Aredhel] was fearless and hardy of heart, as were all the children of Finwë.” Can be used as evidence that Finwëans are widely a crazy bunch so why would Lalwen be any different? Finwean women from Galadriel to Idril to Aredhel to Arwen are deeply driven people. Broadly speaking Finwean women make their own choices, even if they’re bad ones. They’re fearless, courageous, clever, wise. Similar characteristics can be broadly shared to other Finwëan women- like Lalwen and Findis. (Side note: if anyone has other quotes relating to the Finwean family as a whole please share).
We can continue using these few facts to ask questions - did Fingolfin just name is daughter Írissë because he loved his sister broadly or because they were actively similar? Or are names broadly meaning ‘desirable women’ common for Finweans? (See the use of Írien meaning ‘lovely’ as a previous name for Lalwen).
All of this hypothesizing brings me back to my first point; We. Don’t. Know. We just don’t! Functionally nothing to go on!
This means that what little we do have gets interpreted differently and used as a basis for wildly different characterization (I myself have created wildly different Lalwens while using the same base logic). Questions like why was she named laughing maiden? Did this mean she was charming? Loud? Funny? Each of those comes with different characters interpretations- if we think it’s a reference to her sense of humor maybe she played family peacemaker, or made jokes as a coping mechanism for her disastrous family. Or maybe she was a very loud child, possibly chaotic, couldn’t sit still, always moving. And so on and so forth. If she was charming maybe she was a good politician or diplomat?
There is just so much possibility in her character and it’s all based on these few facts. Who was she? What did she do? Why did she do the things she did? (We don’t know even know why she made her one cannon decision!)
This is all two say; 1) if you have a Lalwen interpretation please share I’m curious 2)once I settle on a Lalwen you bet I’ll be writing something rather long.

me wanting to name my future kids after fictional characters and wondering... how far can I go..? cause like names such as nina, jesper, nikolai, etc are all normal.
but imagine naming your kid legolas. imagine having to give your family a card that says our beloved son anakin is finally here! you're going to get ur kid from preschool and ur kid comes up to you like "this is my new friend, ahsoka" and ur like obi-wan let me meet ahsoka's parents NOW
idk it just seems so fucking funny to name my kid after some fictional character with a completely made up name. I give those people the birth certificate and go this is my son, aragorn gimli.

Crash-course for all the evidence of Will creating the mindflayer/upsidedown
* Honestly I’ve talked about this stuff in my did theories- where I explained how the upsidedown/mf/ the lab subjects/ and russians all connect back to Will creating them. But since so may people assume that Will got his powers from the upsidedown/mf rather than Will creating it all subconsciously (with his powers). Thought i’d do a short analysis of just that connection (without boggling it down with those other plot lines that are interconnected) . *So I’m not mentioning the lights -because it interconnects with the numbers/lab.I’m just going to list every example in short succession from every season for brevity’s sake (so it won’t be structured as eloquently as prior analyses).
refresher of how Will influences the mf/upsidedown ...
S1)
Will ( in s1e1) says to Dustin if he could have any comic it would be the xmen. Dustin later  says "do you think - el was born with her powers like the xmen? " Will plays a d&d game saying the demogorgan got him -so it does irl. Will writes stories where bad guys weakness are fire so the mf/ demogorgans are lit on fire in s1-3 (and it's their weakness). Will watches poltergeist so Will is forced to be the child character in that film- who was trapped in a alternative dimension and could only speak to their mother through tech. The demogrgan is said to resemble a shark by nancy-mathcing Will’s Jaws movie poster in his room. in s1 Mr clarke describes the vale of shadows (later the upsidedown) as being created by “necrotic” (’dead’-zombie boy) and “shadow” (shadow monster/mf) “magic”. In d&d the Vale of Shadows, is  as a lush valley hidden in the mountains that holds a sacred pool with the power to make dreams reality. In d&d the demogorgan is literally called the "deep father" in d&d Nancy also says the demogorgan is like a “lion” the meaning of the name Lonnie- is literally “lion”. We see it attack Will when using lonnie's gun (in lonnie's shed). And it knocks the bat out of Jonathan's hand too. (Baseball/hunting were taught by their dad lonnie). The demogorgan also hurts a deer- mirroring Jonathan's story about how Lonnie forced him to kill a rabbit and how this upset him as he was a fan of the rabbit character from the film bambi.. El when she first sees the demogorgan also sees it eating it’s own eggs-aka symbolically the father hurting his own children.  Will's password for cb is rhadagast a wizard who protects Wildlife (the opposite of Hunter-lonnie/the demogorgan).
Duffers cited as inspo the silent hill videogames): And in s1 Hopper named dropped the character Alessa’s last name. “The bad guys faked Alessa’s death. Kaufmann prepared a substitute body of alessa;  and performed the fake autopsy (like Will) . Alessa had precognition (future/intuition-like will the wise is said to have in s3) and pyrokinesis (firepowers mentioned  Will the wise has in s1).  Alessa’s latent psychic abilities are triggered and she shrouds Silent Hill in fog and an altered reality to prevent her ab*sive parent’s schemes from advancing. Many of the drastic changes that befall the town in the game, such as the horrific creatures that come to inhabit it, are conjured from her imagination and delusions. “
Will also says in s1ep1 he wants xmen 134-about the dark phoenix saga. ‘dark phoenix’  - has pyrokinesis ( fire powers-like Will the wise). And the dark phoenix also  “was able to warp reality on a universal scale”. One of the phoenix’s host was even the god Thor (god of lightning-an element Will is associated with a lot in s2)
(in s1 Will also spit up a slug- in d&d putting a slug in a humanoid can create/turn that humanoid into a mf. foreshadowing Will being posessed/becoming the mf in s2. ).
Tumblr media
S2)
 Will plays digdug (a videogame about underground tunnels) so the mf creates tunnels. Will's dog dies so demogogans become demo-dogs. He also watches Ghostbusters- where a character is possessed by the ‘gate keeper’ and can control demon dogs. So this happens to Will too -similar to s1 with poltergeist .In s1 , Hopper even mentions the book Cujo about a violent dog, who is replaced by a new dog named ‘Willie’ (to allude to this).In s1 we see  Mike holding a drawing of Will’s- where Will's wizard has lightning powers (coming from his hand). everytime Will uses tech in s1, the phones explode and lighting appears out of them- hopper makes a BBQ joke about the burned phones.later in s2 the mf has these same lightning abilities and the lab technician makes the same BBQ joke.Joyce even describes the tunnels of the mf/ that Will’s draws as “like lightning.”  We also see the russians eviserated by lightning next season too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lab tech calls Will a wizard-and they monitor his brain waves, record him on video, just like they did to El .(when the mf first appears at Will’s house- the lab techs even notice ). The drawing of the mf is next to a baseball (Lonnie ref) and Will says it was a drawing for a story he wrote. In s2 Nancy describes the mindflayer (but she’s actually describing Will).“So this thing is like a brain that’s controlling everything.”Because it’s not the mindflayers’ brain - it’s Will’s brain controlling everything. ( a “hive mind” aka the mf/WILL share a brain ). Owens in s2e1 (BEFORE the mf possession) says Will's ‘anniversary affect’ would make him remember “tra*matic memories” and “OPEN the neurological flood GATES” (aka Will’s neurological GATES are the gates between the real world and upsidedown - which are connected to the mf).
Tumblr media
 Owens in s2e1 (after mentioning the “gates”) even says Will's ‘anniversary affect’ /  “tr*umatic memories” would  cause temporary “personality changes”for Will (the later mf possession) . I mean... Owens wasn’t entirely wrong was he? Will even feels the back of his neck in s2 and says it has to do with “memories” ...and in s3 feeling the back of his neck meant Will was sensing  the mf. Similarly, before his possession-mr clarke  mentions phineus gage who after an accident had a “complete change to his personality” (and the shot pans to Will).
Tumblr media
Nancy even calls the mind flayer the “mind-flamer”- hinting at it’s connection to Will the wise who has fire powers). And Dustin says the mf “takes over minds with it’s highly developed psyionic abilities “ And to “summon an undead army... cause the mindflayer loves brains ” ( and in s3 the mf creates a undead army by taking over people’s brains). Hopper  even says “So how do we kill this thing shoot it with fireballs ?” (which destroys the flesh-monster in s3) ”
S3)
Will (the “zombie boy”) writes a story about juju zombies after watching a film about zombies at starcourt in s3 - then the mf creates a undead army -which was also foreshadowed in s2 (and similar to Will’s  s3 d&d story).  We also see Will wrote this d&d story in front of "the thing" poster. So the mf creates a flesh monster resembling the creature in that film too.  We also see someone get bit (el) like in Will's story and when his friends retcon his ending to be about “sacrificing themselves via explosion (Hopper).” Will just says “fine you win” (so it ends that way).Also, the shadow monster is now called the Mindflayer - and mimics the mf from d&d (both can control rats with their powers in the show/game).
Tumblr media
Will in s2-3 grabs the back of his neck and he attributed it to “memories”, “dreams”, and sensing the mf. Will created castle byers after his dad left and he grabs the bat in cb which was next to the Will the wise drawing (similar to how the baseball was next to the mf drawing in s2) and destroys cb with said bat . Then Will touches his neck and admits the mf has returned.  EVERY moment Will senses the mf can be loosely connected to Lonnie. Lonnie used to call him h*mophobic sl*rs so anytime he subconsciously thinks of his feelings towards Mike the mf appears-1st time it’s on one of their ‘movie dates’, 2nd time when Mike and El walk off together down the hill to make-out, 3rd time right after he smashed castle byers after Mike says “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls”, 4th time (after the fight with Mike) when Billy is yelling to open the door (a trigger) and confides in Mike, 5th time when Mike asks him to go away so he can talk to El in the hospital waiting area, and 6th time when Mike says he loves El. The 7th time is when Jonathan is fixing up a car -something Lonnie used to do.Lonnie fixes up cars as a hobby-showing his remodeled car to Jonathan in s1 . Will then senses the mf and grabs his neck-which he said are connected to old “memories”.  max and Mike are silent until Jonathan says  says “got it (the distributor)”. Then Mike screams for his older sibling. We also see in s1 Jonathan checked to see if Lonnie threw Will in his trunk- something the mf does to some of his victims in s3.
Dustin and susie sing “never ending story”- which is literally about a seemingly normal boy  named Sebastian with a bowl cut (from a single parent home) subconsciously making a fantasy world being invaded by a dark force (representing the loss of hope/dreams) that only his imagination powers can fix . “make believe i’m everywhere ... what you dream will be...Rhymes that keep their secrets Will unfold behind the clouds.And there upon a rainbow Is the answer to a never ending story” . Cough-Will’s rainbow ship he CREATED.Both times the  lyric plays  “Rhymes that keep their secrets WILL “ ( it pans to Will).
Tumblr media
The film also follows a false chosen one who everyone says is supposed to save fantasia- named Atreyu (el). Specifically, for that plotwist that Sebastian (Will) has to be the one to do so , not Atreyu (who sebastian subconsciously created). In the novel/film-Atreyu ( the child who was deemed the ‘chosen one) is knocked from Falkor’s back, and into the sea of possibilities. There he wakes on the shore of abandoned ruins.
Tumblr media
“There Gmork (The Mindflayer) reveals himself, having been lying in wait.And then latches his jaws onto Atreyu’s leg.”
Tumblr media
-Before the duet, Susie tells dusin she’s reading “ a wizard of earthsea” and says ged is about to save his world. The book is about a boy-wizard  named Ged (Will) who casts a powerful spell, but the spell goes awry and instead he releases a shadow creature! The new Archmage, Gensher, describes the shadow as an ancient evil that wishes to possess Ged. But the ‘shadow’ turns out  to be a representation of the darkest aspects of his personality. And the only way for the world to be saved is for the 2 to merge and for Ged to accept himself .
Tumblr media
-Will says he’s a wizard ( writing on a music tape in s3 “will the wise-wizard mix’ and having his password for castle byers be ‘rhadaghast’- a lotr wizard). The way they describe d&d Wizards matches Will/mindflayer perfectly “Wizards are adepts and magicians who combine according to the type of their spells. Relying on the subtle weaves of magic that permeate the universe, wizards are able to create spells of explosive fire, sparking lightning, subtle deception, and gross mind control. Their magic summons monsters from other planes of existence, predicts the future, and turns defeated enemies into zombies. Their most powerful spells can transform one substance into another, summon meteors from the sky, and open portals to other worlds” (all these powers Will the wise/mf are implied to have)
- Stranger things d&d comic (published post s3) : Will creating a illusion army of monsters -as Will the wizard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- stranger writers twitter reffed several movies which discuss artist/writer WILLiam Blake who helped make the art exhibit “worlds turned upsidedown”
Tumblr media
possible reason for the flayed eating  chemicals& fertilizer (in s3)
full link/credits here.  Lonnie’s gf has a biker shirt from Harley davidson- with the eagle logo and their saying “live to ride’. Which would imply lonnie is also in such biker circles. Harley davidson in the 80s had dr*g gangs too (primarily m*th).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 One reason m*th is so prevalent in rural areas is that it can be formulated, or “cooked,” by small producers and one of the ingredients is readily found on most farms – anhydrous AMMONIA fertilizer. Both farmers and chemical suppliers have experienced thefts of anhydrous particularly in the Midwest.“
Tumblr media
WHICH REMINDS ME OF the FLAYED EATING FERTILIZER AND CHEMICALS IN S3 . Nancy even says farmers/chem suppliers  are having fertilizer stolen! And she later thinks flayed tom was on drugs- “A mysterious  case of the missing fertilizer- a Nancy Drew Mystery”. This is also in the same season one character (who looks a bit like Lonnie) is a biker is corrupting the town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Will creating /basing the supernatural from suppressed memories -means it’s from a very young child’s perspective . young Will would equate people eating chemicals, ammonia fertilizer, and ammonia... to using those SAME chemicals to create m*th and then physically consuming them . Why we see mrs driscoll eating fertilizer & Billy drinking ammonia.
Tumblr media
The reason the flayed started behaving differently is probably because in s2 Will was forcibly injected with a needle & woken up with ammonia by Hopper-jogging some of those old memories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EVEN Nancy’s proof Tom is on dr*gs is a symptom of m*th use or withdrawl from it-excessive sweating (like all the flayed in s2-3). M*th causes hyperthermia (body is at a higher temp than usual)-so they like it cold!!!!! Even clammy hands that she mentioned is a symptom of m*th use. in children it can even cause seizures- like Will :(
Tumblr media
And when m*th is made via fertilizer it first is made into a highly corrosive liquid which is sometimes green-like the Russian lab.“six pounds of toxic waste is created for every pound of m*th manufactured. The waste is often dumped on farms, in rivers and and is harmful to the environment.” Like all the chemical leaks relating to Hawkins lab/mf that affected the crops in s2/this pic of water in s3.
Tumblr media
m*th was even called ‘bathroom crank’-which is sketchy given the bathtub is what mf fears and how the sensory deprivation tank is also called a ‘tub’ by el . Becky even said Brenner would get terry high and throw her in the tank/tub.
It also does take some chemisty knowledge to COVERT various substances (including fertilizer and other chemicals) to make m*th- which reminds me of the kids saying they can convert one substance into another (when explaining why the possessed are eating chemicals)- they say they’re making a new chemical “in themselves”
Tumblr media
other hints
Will’s b day is march 22 . Which is when “fire burns most brightly” and his ‘birthday number is number 7′ (”it was a 7 the demogorgan it got me′) . The number 7  is specifically associated with  “wisdom and psychic abilities”.  His b day even adds up to 7 (3+2+2).His horoscope is also influenced by the shadow god-ketu (who is also associated with wisdom and psychic abilities too).
Tumblr media
* There’s way more details/depth/ other st inspirations in my DID analyses -specifically pt 2. (where i discuss how the mf/upsidedown connects to the numbers/russians- and also specifially Will).But this is just a crash course about the flayed/upsideown/it’s creatures connect to Will.
People will dismiss all of this as just the Duffers liking to reference random things they like/ and foreshadow via d&d without any in universe reason.  but I really think that’s a disappointing explanation/outcome. Especially the predictable cliche theory that the mf is just experiment #1. Not only is it boring, cliche, and predictable af- but it doesn’t line up as well with the mental health themes mentioned in ever season.Will created everything via tr*uma cause of his dad- and overcomes this: is not only a “twist” that will make rewatching more enjoyable given all the hints- it’s more narratively sound given how much the series touches on themes such as overcoming tra*ma, mental health, and problematic fathers. The #1/ex experiment=mf theory doesn’t explain why they made the supernatural connect to Will in this way . And with such a boring cliche ending it would quickly be forgotten like other big sci-fi/fantasy shows that quickly lost relevancy after being popular: like heros, g.o.t, etc.One makes the show cliche another makes it remembered for decades (ex: jacob’s ladder).

I’ve finally finished reading the lord of the rings. It’s been a big part of my life.
When I was 5 I watched the hobbit and lord of the rings animated movies memorized it. Still sing “where’s there’s a whip” and start stories with “Frodo of the nine fingers”. Being the consumer of all the audiobooks I could carry from the library I demanded to listen to the book even though my parents warned me not to. (My dad had been an avid fan since his teen years so knew I definitely won’t get through it. Of course I didn’t understand and cried inconsolably when I lost the plot and didn’t understand the long names and events. Then when the movies came out I was 7 and I went to the theater so excited. Even though the movies gave me nightmares I loved them. I went to the library again and stubbornly listened to LOTR. It was the only book series to challenge me. I listened to the whole thing but as an ADHD child I struggled. The only things that stuck with me was Tom Bombadil and Tree-beard. I adored Tree-beard so much I’d go out into the backyard and talk to the trees 🤣 Throughout my school career I’d always go back to trying to read LOTR over and over. Each time I’d get frustrated and give up. I read/listened fantasy and sci-fi like a sponge. Always had the most books read for my class. But LOTR was unattainable. Looking back I think it became my Mount Doom. I built it up in my head that I wasn’t smart enough that I didn’t have the attention span blaming it on my ADHD instead of realizing it was a fake mental block I had given myself. I stopped being the voracious reader after giving LOTR one more time in University. Went on to get a career and my goal to read and understand LOTR faded into the background. My love of Fantasy never stopped when I did art on this tumblr there were dragons and warriors and when I wrote my own fan fiction for whatever obsession it was always epic fantasy. But I avoided my old nemesis lotr like a shadow in the back of my mind. My girlfriend lived on the filming site for Mount Doom in New Zealand with a tattoo of Andúril on the back of her neck and I still tried to avoid the challenge. It finally took my little sister turning off my BTS music on a road trip and playing The Hobbit from the Unexpected Journey on Spotify. She’d never tried reading the series before. I was immediately a moth drawn to the flame. I had to try again. 5 years since my last try.
I have finally done it at age 28. I listened to the Hobbit, Fellowship, Two Towers, and Return of the King. I’ve conquered this massive hurdle and I’m so glad. I loved the books this time. I finally had the life experience to understand the characters and story. I had more fun than I would have thought possible. I’ll probably even watch the movies again (something I haven’t attempted since I was 13). I feel so accomplished I had to post about it. It feels like a major milestone I want to scream out into the world. But since I can I’ll just post on Tumblr and be privately proud and a little sad to have finally accomplished a challenge I set for myself over 20 years ago.

Mira.
A short and unusual name for an Elf, but it fitted her perfectly. After all, many would call her short and unusual too. That is, if they had known she was an Elf to begin with. But more of that later.
You see, her name hadn’t always been Mira. When she was born, she was given the name Eímiraelyn. [εɪ-mirəlɪn]
Mira used to live with her parents in Lóthlorien. From the moment she was born, she had been different, or as her parents like to call her ‘special’.
Elves were fairly tall, elegant and light footed. She was anything but. Short with long hair; not blonde and perfectly straight like most Elves, no, Mira had to have dark burgundy hair that curled at the ends, which turned fiery red when the sun touched her head.
And as if that wasn’t enough, she was clumsy. No big deal, you would think, but a clumsy Elf, that was unheard of.
The only thing that made her a typical Elf on the outside, were her pointy ears.
The other children teased her for not being a pure Elf because she looked different and she had often asked her Nanneth and Ada if it was true.
And every time they would assure her that she was one of the purest, that there was no other as special as she was. That one day she was destined to do great things.
Mira hated it. She didn’t want to be special, she just wanted to fit in.
There was one thing about her appearance that she was proud of: her eyes. They were dark brown at the edges, turning lighter towards the iris and in the lighter section you could see small green freckles. It reminded her of the trees in the forest.
When she grew older, she started to withdraw herself in her room or the training grounds, showing interest in the archers and guards who trained their sword skills.
One might expect she would constantly hurt herself in training because of her clumsiness, but to her own surprise and especially that of others she was a natural in archery and wasn’t all that bad with knives. She had tried to wield a sword but it didn’t feel right to her. Relieved she finally found something she was good at, she spent all her time perfecting her skills.
Her peaceful time in Lóthlorien came to an abrupt halt when she turned a hundred.
It was tradition for every Elf in Lóthlorien to have a private audience with Lady Galadriel when their 100th winter passed. Mira was excited, even though she had no idea what to expect. No one was allowed to discuss their audience, because it was different and very personal for each.
For Mira it was her only chance to ask for a favor of the Lady of the Light. And she was going to take it with both hands.
To say it didn’t quite go as planned was an understatement. What Mira learned that day would change everything.
The Lady Galadriel welcomed her and had asked about her expectations of their meeting. When Mira requested if her appearance could be more like everyone else, she had immediately declined, repeating the words her parents told her countless times.
“You are very special, Eímiraelyn. Destined to do great things, it would be highly unwise to turn away from your own destiny.”
“And what may that destiny be?” Mira had asked. Lady Galadriel had smiled kindly to her.
“That is for you to find out, hîn nin.” (My Child)
She had rolled her eyes at that, earning a chuckle from Galadriel.
“Tell me, Eímiraelyn, have you noticed something different about you?”
Mira gave her a very sarcastic look, as if to say ‘Seriously?’. She grabbed a lock of her hair to emphasize what she meant.
“I do not speak of your appearance. You, hîn nin, have been touched by the Valar and were blessed with the gift of foresight. It is not as strong as mine, but it can be trained.”
Mira blinked a couple of times. Foresight? As in seeing the future?
“Your gift is still very small, only flashes from what is to happen. Mere seconds, not easy to read.”
“Suuuure… And I’m a princess too?” Mira couldn’t help but roll her eyes again. One day her sarcasm would get her into a lot of trouble, but it just came natural to her.
Lady Galadriel only stared, a knowing smile on her lips.
“You’re kidding me right?”
“You carry a remarkable fierceness within you, Eímiraelyn, it is one of your greatest strengths. I’m quite certain the Prince of Mirkwood will appreciate it as much as I do.”
“Who?”
“Ever since you were born, hîn nin, there has been an agreement between the kingdoms of Lóthlorien and Mirkwood that you were to be wedded to their Prince as soon as you come of age.”
Lady Galadriel had awaited her reaction to the news with caution. Mira had managed to keep herself together, but internally she was boiling with anger. An arranged marriage? Was that why they kept telling her she was so special? Because she was ‘reserved’ for some kind of stuck up, spoiled Elven Prince who was almost certainly struggling with Ada issues and had a brain as empty as the Mines of Moria?
“I suppose I don’t have anything to say about this?”
“My dear Eímiraelyn. I would have been surprised if you had gone along with it willingly,” Lady Galadriel smiled at her knowingly. “The King of Mirkwood and his son will arrive in a few weeks for you. I am quite sure you will take a liking to the Prince as soon as you meet him.”
As much as she trusted Lady Galadriel’s judgement, she wasn’t planning on sticking around to see for herself.
The audience had ended shortly after, leaving Mira extremely disappointed.
She still looked the way she did, was ‘blessed’ with a gift that hadn’t yet surfaced and on top of that, she was on the eve of an arranged marriage to a prince she had never met.
She tried countless times to persuade her parents to change their mind about the marriage, but they kept telling her that it was an honour that the Valar’s choice had fallen on her and that she was extremely fortunate to be able to live a royal life. Mira couldn’t disagree more.
She said goodbye to Lóthlorien a few days later, taking her bow and knives and the clothes she was wearing as her only belongings.
That was almost eight hundred years ago. She changed her name to Mira, kept her ears hidden beneath her hair and started swerving around Middle Earth on her own for a couple of years.
Once in a while she would stay at a village of the race of Men, but not the larger ones. She avoided Edoras and Minas Tirith, too afraid to bump into Elves who might recognize her. Curse her dark red hair.
 After a century or two, she decided to explore Middle Earth some more.
It was during one of those ‘expeditions’ that she met Gandalf. He had immediately known who she was, even tried to persuade her into returning to Lóthlorien, but Mira had made it very clear that it wasn’t an option, begging him not to tell anyone that he saw her.
Gandalf had gifted her a dark brown cloak, that was fairly short - it ended right at the top of her thighs - but the most useful part was the large hood.
That cloak became her biggest friend. She wore the hood up constantly, keeping her burgundy hair out of sight. Because she didn’t look like your standard Elf, she could hide her race pretty well too.
From that day on, Mira only lived with or stayed close to humans, helping them defend their village against Orcs and other scum. When they became suspicious of her not ageing, she simply left and traveled further. This worked just fine.
Once in a while she bumped into Gandalf again, sometimes accompanying him on some of his ‘quests’, as he liked to call them.
She always accepted his invitations, except for that one time.
Almost 7 centuries after she had left Lóthlorien, Gandalf had asked her to be his ‘burglar’ for something he would call the “Quest of Erebor”. She of course had turned it down, asking him if he had lost his mind. It would take her way too close to Mirkwood. She couldn’t risk it.
Gandalf had protested, but let her go. She learned afterwards that he succeeded in his journey and it had resulted in a massive battle between Dwarves, Elves, Men and Orcs. It almost made her regret her decision, it sounded like a lot of fun.
She hadn’t heard from Gandalf since.
That was until today.
A/N: A chapter to get to know our lead character. Let me know what you think! My requests for imagines/HC are still open for LOTR/The Hobbit!

Worldbuilding Exchange Letter 2021
Hello lovely creator, thanks for creating for me in the Worldbuilding Exchange! I’m very excited and grateful for whatever you create for me <3
This letter will restate my DNWs, list my likes, give you a brief rundown of my canon preferences, and then dive into specific prompts for each of my requests.
I’ll warn you upfront that I tend to ramble, so feel free to skip prompts that don’t interest you and/or use ctrl+F to search for whatever it is you want to write for.
My requests are divided by fandom, and in the case of the Silm + Middle-earth Legendarium, by topic too, so hopefully that will be helpful for you! Also, my TAZ request is waaay down at the bottom, so if that’s what you’re here for, just go to the bottom of the page.
Housekeeping:
DNWs:
Non-con
Unrequested dub-con
Abusive/Neglectful parenting (especially wrt Fëanor)
Sibling incest, parent-child incest (cousin pairings are fine)
Unhappy/Unhopeful endings (unless otherwise specified)
Jealousy/Possessiveness
Cheating
Character or ship bashing
Hanahaki/any scenario where unrequited love is physically damaging
Soulmates, especially soulmate AUs (soul bonds are OK, if there is choice involved)
Porn without plot (Porn with plot is fine!)
Food involved in sex
Unrequested Modern AU
Non-trans mpreg
If you’re writing a slash ship where the characters are/were married to/involved with someone outside the ship, please don’t have the character(s) hate their spouse or not have been actually in love with them (the one exception is Finrod; I’m fine with him and Amarië not having been actually in love, but please don’t do this for anyone else, especially not Fëanor)
Hobbit/LOTR-specific DNWs:
The concept of a dwarven “One”
Any Fíli pairing
Alfrid
Legolas or Gimli paired with anyone other than each other
no smut for these fandoms, please
Silm-specific DNWs:
Evil/irredeemable/incel Maeglin
Elwing bashing
Fëanorian bashing
Over the top Fëanorian apologism (they did bad stuff; it was at least partially their fault. you don’t have to address that, necessarily, but don’t rewrite the story to claim they were blameless)
Fingon with a wife
Fingon or Maedhros ships that don’t take Russingon into account (polyamory, an open relationship, Mae with someone after Finno dies or vice versa for an AU, them with other people while they’re separated on the Ice/in Angband - all of these scenarios are fine, but in the end I need them to be with each other first and foremost)
Dark!Maedhros
Elvish re-embodiment after death being an actual, literal rebirth that requires the characters to have a second childhood; I much prefer them being granted a new hröa in their prime (feel free to explore what “in their prime” means, though, especially wrt scarred and disabled elves)

Resolving conflicting canonical details
Historical/Narrative bias affecting what is and isn’t “canon” (to an extent; changing motivations, consequences, etc is great, but please don’t ignore canon entirely)
Elrond & Elros having complicated relationships with both their bio and adoptive parents
Names fitting the time period (Quenya names in Valinor, please; if this is difficult for you, that’s okay, no pressure, but I do strongly prefer it)
Names having a lot of thought put behind them (does the character go back to their original Quenya name upon rebirth? or do they keep their Sindarin name? or come up with something else entirely? do they hate their new Sindarin name and resent having to use it, or do they embrace it? As long as you put some thought into it, I’m sure I’ll like whatever you decide!)
Author’s notes where you explain your thought process, if you want; I love hearing how the story took shape!
~~~
Preferences re: Canon:
LaCE compliance is always completely optional (except if you’re choosing a prompt that is specifically about LaCE, lol). If you do want to include it, that’s great, but if you just want the characters to fuck without having that be an issue, go for it. I love explorations of LaCE that take into account the exceptions, boundaries, definitions, etc; I also love takes that emphasize that they are Laws and Customs, not biological imperatives.
I’m not picky about my Amrod deaths. He can die at either Losgar or Sirion (or, hell, some other time/place if you make it interesting enough!), whatever works best for the story. I do like Lightly Toasted Amrod, aka he almost burns to death at Losgar but survives/gets rescued at the last minute.
Gil-galad theories are all very fun. Please don’t make him the son of Fingon and a wife; if he’s Fingon’s son, I want Maedhros to be involved at least a little bit (adoption or trans mpreg are both fine in this scenario). Otherwise, I don’t have a particular preference, though if it’s not really relevant I usually default to the son of Orodreth (who is in turn the son of Angrod). Also, I’ve requested “Origins of Gil-galad”; there’s more information on him in that section.
Honestly, when it comes to theories and headcanons, my rule of thumb is “convince me”! I’m down for whatever, for the most part, as long as you can justify it :)
~~~
For all of these, “suggested characters” pulls from the list of characters I requested with that signup, but if you’ve got an idea involving other characters then go for it! And in the end, all characters are just suggestions, this exchange is more about the worldbuilding :)

The Hobbit (Book)
Adventuring Hobbits Before Bilbo: Who were they? Did they ever come back, or was Bilbo assumed dead because of precedent? Were they all Tooks, or did some other hobbits tag along on adventures, too? Suggested Character(s): Belladonna Took
Dragon Magic & Dragon-hunting: Talk to me about dragons! I’m interested in dragons & dwarves, especially in relation to the first time dwarves were driven from Erebor and into the North and the War of the Dwarves and Dragons. What kinds of dragons set their sights on the mountain? How old was Smaug when all that was happening; did he learn anything from the failures of his kin? Who were the dragon-hunting dwarves who fought in that war? Suggested Character(s): Smaug, Original Dwarf Character
Dwarven Craft and Magic: Enchanted weapons, enchanted armor, runes and spells...all so interesting! Borrowing from the movies a bit, did Kíli’s runestone from Dís have any magic power? What’s the deal with the Arkenstone’s thrall? How do elf and dwarf magics intersect when it comes to objects like Bilbo’s mithril coat? Suggested Character(s): Dís, Frerin, Thorin, Original Dwarf Character (perhaps a craftsdwarf?)
Dwarves and Gender: We need more dwarf women! And I’d love any takes on nonbinary dwarves and/or dwarf-specific genders. Were there female dwarves in the Company that Bilbo mistook for male dwarves? Are dwarven women really only a third of the population? If dwarf men and women are very similar in appearance, how do they differentiate between them, or do they differentiate at all? If you included something about dwarvish braiding styles indicating gender, class, marital status, I would be delighted. Suggested Character(s): Dís, Frerin, Thorin, Original Dwarf Character; in this case I’d prefer a focus on canon characters, but OCs interacting with them would be marvelous, especially people like Dís’ spouse.
The Black Arrow: Bard’s little pep talk to his arrow has always intrigued me. I’d love to see your take on the origins of the Black Arrow. Does it really come from Erebor, and if so, who made it? How did Bard and his forefathers come to acquire it? (I like the movie version that ties it into Girion’s attempt to kill Smaug, so feel free to incorporate that if you feel like it.) Is the arrow enchanted? (Perhaps that could be tied to the Dwarven Craft and Magic tag!) Suggested Character(s): Bard, Original Character from Dale, Original Dwarf Character
The Stone Giants & Were-worms: I don’t have many thoughts on these guys except “neat! tell me more!” I’m fascinated by the creatures Tolkien only gives us a passing mention of; if you feel like it, maybe you could combine these tags with some of the creatures in the LOTR tagset (crebain, cold drakes, Watcher in the Water, Mearas, Kine of Araw, etc...I didn’t sign up with all those tags, but it would be neat to hear about them anyway!)
~~~
The Lord of the Rings (Books)
Cold-drakes and Fire-drakes & Crebain & The Watcher in the Water: Like with the Stone Giants and the Were-worms, I just think they’re neat and I’d love to hear your take on their origins and how they affect the history of Middle-earth. Feel free to combine this with other creature-related requests. Suggested Character(s): Scatha
Ghosts and Hauntings: Barrow-wights? Nazgûl victims? Just your crotchety old hobbit neighbor who still holds a grudge about losing the biggest pumpkin contest despite having been dead for 20 years? There’s a lot of potential for stories here; maybe you could combine a ghost story with some other prompt to add a murder mystery or haunting plot to a relationship you’re exploring!
Dwarf-Elf Relations: I don’t believe All Dwarves and All Elves hated each other! We have famous elf-dwarf friendships across the ages, and really it was just the Sindar vs. the Broadbeams/Firebeards that had the feud. Still, Legolas (a Sinda) and Gimli (raised among Broadbeams and Firebeards in the Blue Mountains) are caught up in that, so their friendship is quite remarkable! I’d love interrogations of how that feud continued across centuries and discussions of what really went down in Menegroth, perhaps with one of the Durins having an elf friend at some point in the past that sheds light on how Legolas and Gimli can get along. (I am here for any and all Gimli and Legolas combinations; I love them as friends, I love them as boyfriends or husbands, I love them as queerplatonic partners, I love them as anything in between! Do whatever you’d like with them!) Suggested Character(s): Gimli, Legolas, Original Elf Character, Any of Durins 1-7
Elvish and Mannish settlements in post-Ring War Ithilien: How do Legolas and Faramir get along, both living in Ithilien after the war? What do Legolas’ people think about being neighbors with a bunch of Men? Faramir and Imrahil were Aragorn’s chief commanders after the war, and Legolas expressed admiration for Imrahil; I imagine Imrahil visited his nephew in Ithilien, so what are the interactions of those three like? I’d love to see an exploration of Silvan elves and their culture here, with Legolas leaning into his Silvan heritage and maybe some Silvan OCs who have spent their whole lives in Mirkwood up until now and have never met Men before now! Suggested Character(s): Faramir, Legolas, Imrahil, Original Elf Character
Relations between the Dúnedain and Rivendell: Talk to me about the Grey Company, or Elladan and Elrohir fighting alongside their distant kin, or Rangers taking breaks in Imladris, how the Rangers think of Aragorn who was raised among elves, etc. I’d love an outsider POV here, such as an OC observing the oddities of a canon character. Suggested Character(s): Original Elf Character, Original Ranger of the North
The Glittering Caves of Aglarond: More Gimli and Legolas stuff - but with a focus on Gimli this time :) Gimli as a lord in his own right, Gimli who takes elves on tours of his dwarf-kingdom and weirds out his people (is it just Legolas, or does he take any Silvan elves with him, or like...his elvish in-laws??), Gimli as a craftsman... Or, alternatively, you could explore the caves before Gimli gets to work on them, what the Rohirrim thought of them and how they were created - by natural processes, or by magic, or a mixture of both? Did Aulë make them for the dwarves to find, perhaps? Suggested Character(s): Gimli, Legolas
~~~
The Hobbit (Movies)
Dragonsickness/Goldsickness: The parallel to mental illness in the movies was really interesting. I’d love to see lingering effects of the goldsickness on Thorin after the Battle (Everyone Lives AU, probably), or an AU where Fíli or Kíli inherit the throne of Erebor and are afflicted by it as well. Or, sticking to canon, how did Fíli and Kíli and the rest of the Company deal with Thorin falling into madness? Were the other dwarves affected by the thrall of the gold? Bard and Thranduil were observers of Thorin’s madness; what did they think of him? Did Thranduil remember Thrór under dragonsickness? Or, since movie!Thranduil is a far cry from book!Thranduil when it comes to going to war over jewels, was he affected by the dragonsickness even from a distance? Was Bard? Suggested Character(s): Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Bard the Bowman, Thranduil
Dwarves who "choose craft"/Aromantic-Spectrum and Asexual-Spectrum Dwarves: This is pulling more from the books than the movies, but I didn’t have enough nomination slots to include any book nominations, so it went here, lol. Anyway: as I’m sure you can tell from my tumblr url, I headcanon Fíli as aromantic, and I love seeing that in fanworks! It’s really wonderful that Tolkien mentioned that many dwarves choose their craft over marriage, and I’d love to see an exploration of that aspect of dwarvish culture, and how Fíli fits into it. It seems to be fairly common/accepted, but are there different cultural pressures around marriage for the crown prince? How does Fíli figure out he’s aromantic? If aro and ace dwarves are expected to be choosing a craft over romance and sex, what’s Fíli’s craft? Or does he not have one, and people judge him for that? The “choose craft” language I use is very much inspired by this post and the Neo-Khuzdul word “bijebtorva” :) Suggested Character(s): Fíli, Original Character(s)
Governance and Politics in Mirkwood: How did Thranduil and Oropher come to power in the Greenwood? I hate the “lowly Silvan elf” line from the movie; can you somehow justify that with worldbuilding, or show how it’s not accurate? Is Legolas half-Silvan like is implied in the LOTR books? Who are Thranduil’s advisors? Is Tauriel really the only one who dislikes and defies Thranduil’s isolationist policies? Is Mirkwood very patriarchal, and is Tauriel’s appointment to Captain of the Guard something she faced opposition or competition for? Are the Sindar elite colonizers, or did they integrate into Silvan society? How does the average Silvan elf feel about their king, or do they not even think about him? Suggested Character(s): Thranduil, Tauriel, Original Character(s)
Poetry and prophecy: Bard uncovers that tapestry that turns a song from the book into a somewhat ominous prophecy; there’s a lot of discussion of fate and signs from the thrush at the door to the last light of Durin’s Day; Thranduil has seen enough in his thousands of years to have had time to brush up against a prophecy or two. What do these three believe about fate and prophecy? Are any of them prophets in their own right? How does poetry/music lend power to prophecy? (Bonus points if you tie it back into the Ainulindalë...) Suggested Character(s): Bard the Bowman, Thorin, Thranduil
Poisons and antidotes: I love Kíli/Tauriel and the scene where she heals his wound...but the worldbuilding around morgul poison and athelas is a little murky. It’s a decent parallel to Frodo’s condition in the LOTR movies, but it’s confusing lore-wise. Can you make sense of it? If Tauriel is a warrior, where did she learn healing? (In my own headcanons, her foster family are healers, which is how she learned those skills even though she’s primarily a warrior - but feel free to take it in whatever direction you’d like!) Suggested Character(s): Tauriel, Kíli, Original Character(s)
Rebuilding Erebor & Relations between Dwarves + Elves + Men: (I’d prefer an Everyone Lives AU for this situation.) How do Thorin and his Company put Erebor back together again? What are the renovation projects like? How long does it take Dís and the rest of the Longbeards to arrive in Erebor and help out? How long does Dáin stay to help his cousin? I would love to see some politics both internally within the Longbeard dwarves and externally as they relate to Mirkwood and Dale. Smaug’s corpse is just lying in the Long Lake...how do the dwarves feel about their old enemy’s body so close by? Do some Men want to re-establish Lake-town, and demand help from the dwarves who flushed the dragon out of the mountain? Do the dwarves want to harvest Smaug’s corpse for resources? (He’s probably got gold and jewels stuck in his scales, and dragon-skin/scales is probably a good raw material for crafting things.) What’s the process of Bard becoming King of Dale? Does he face any opposition? I love the idea of Hilda Bianca challenging him for leadership, or maybe insisting on some kind of democracy/representation in Dale! And if she doesn’t get her way, maybe it’s her leading some people back to Esgaroth and founding a democracy there that would make the old Master roll in his watery grave... How do Bard and Thranduil and Thorin reconcile after the battle? Does Thorin pay up like he said he would? Does Tauriel hang around, or does she go somewhere else? Are any elves inspired by her, or is she a total outcast? If you choose to explore the Kíli/Tauriel relationship, how does that affect politics between Erebor and Mirkwood? Suggested Character(s): Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Bard the Bowman, Hilda Bianca, Thranduil, Tauriel, Original Character(s)
Tauriel's fate after the Battle of the Five Armies: This is for exploring what happened to Tauriel in canon. Does she wander the world and explore new places? How long does she mourn Kíli? What does she do with the runestone? Does she return to Mirkwood, and if so, how does she manage to get back into Thranduil’s good graces? There are a million different ways to take this, I’d love to see your take on her! Suggested Character(s): Tauriel, Thranduil, Original Character(s)
~~~
The Silmarillion: Magic & Spirits
Houseless Elves: Why did they refuse the call of Mandos? Do Avari even go to Mandos? Can Melkor and Sauron ensnare these spirits for their necromantic purposes? If the call of Mandos is refused once, does that bar them from listening in the future? What kinds of ghosts are haunting Middle-earth in the First Age? What kinds of ghosts haunt Aman? Suggested Character(s): Original Character(s), Melkor
Magic as a connection to the Music/the Song: Magic isn’t always the best-explained in Tolkien’s universe, but what we do know is the incredible power of the Music. How do the Maiar and Valar, who are not technically beings of Arda, interact with the world? How do elves and men (and dwarves! and orcs!) tap into the Song and manipulate it to their benefit (or detriment)? I have the headcanon that Elemmírë, the elf who sung the Aldudénië, is a priestess of Varda; what was the power of that mourning song, and how was it received by her patron Vala? Suggested Character(s): Elemmírë, Varda, Melian, Melkor, Original Character(s)
Nature Spirits: These holes in Tolkien’s worldbuilding are fascinating to me. What role do nature spirits play? How many are there? I’m thinking particularly of river spirits, like the River-woman and Goldberry, but there are probably also mountain spirits and water spirits and-and-and... Are they Maiar? Lesser beings? What do the Maiar we know of think about them? Gandalf seems the kind to listen to them and learn their stories, but perhaps Melian sees them more as servants in protecting her realm... Suggested Character(s): Melian, Original Character(s)
The Shadow-shapes in the hills above Cuiviénen: What were these shapes? Melkor’s prototypical monsters, Maiar who didn’t know how to interact with the Children, something else entirely? What did the original elves believe about them? Did they fear them, did they try to appease them, did they try to confront them? I headcanon that Elemmírë is an Unbegotten elf, so perhaps she lost friends to the Shadows, or thought she did. If the Shadows did take elves, was it out of malice or curiosity or a desire to protect them from whatever Melkor was planning? Suggested Character(s): Melkor, Elemmírë, Original Character(s)
The Void: Melkor spends a whole lot of time here. Does he have any company? Something or someone he makes to pass the time with? Do the Valar (like Manwë or Námo or Varda or Nienna) visit him there? What is the nature of the Void, is it pure emptiness or chaotic magic or a nightmare machine? Is Melkor being punished or is he being contained? And where are the boundaries of the Void? Varda rules the heavens; does her realm bleed into Melkor’s prison? Suggested Character(s): Melkor, Varda, Original Character(s)
The Silmarillion: Elven Relationships
Note: This request deals with relationships, and while I’m open to pretty much anything, please keep in mind my DNWs. Exploring these topics using canon relationships is a safe bet; I adore Maedhros/Fingon so having a look at them through this lens would be amazing; I have Aredhel as a character request here, and I see her as aromantic (“to none was her heart’s love given”) so while showing her in a relationship is fine, I’d love it if you could take her lack of romantic feelings into account; if you have a question about another ship, you can check to see what I’ve written and/or send me anon message! Additionally, a lot of these talk about soul bonds, which I’m very interested in, but one of my DNWs is soulmates. To me the concepts are very different things; it’s the destiny and inevitability and universal assumption of romance that really squick me out about soulmates. Soul bonds, on the other hand, have an aspect of choice to them that I really dig. So, please don’t make characters Fated For One Another, but please do explore what joining souls is like!
Laws & Customs of the Eldar: Boy do I have a lot of feelings about LaCE—and I’m always intrigued by other people’s feelings, too! I’d love to see an exploration of how these laws and customs came to be, which parts of the rules around marriage and children and re-embodiment are social constructs and which are innate to the fëa and hröa, and/or relationships that defy the norms. If your take on the laws is hetero/cisnormative, how does that affect queer elves? If your take is free of bigotry, what are the flexibilities around queerness, including asexuality and aromanticism? Laws and customs and rules always have loopholes and exceptions, so what do elves who don’t fit into the expected relationship mold do about these norms? Suggested Character(s): Aredhel, Maedhros, Fingon, Elrond, Any Unbegotten Elf Character(s)
Arranged Marriages among the Eldar: Russingon arranged marriage AU?? Orrrr....Maedhros or Fingon are politically engaged to someone else, and they have to deal with the ramifications of that? (Please don’t have them actually go through with the marriage if you go that route; I’m not interested in a story with Fingon having a wife, even if she’s a beard.) If elves (usually) only love once, and by declaration of the Valar can only marry once (Finwë being the somewhat disastrous exception), how is an arranged marriage justified within the cultural emphasis on these bonds? Are they more like arranged romances, people pushing their children together in hopes that they’ll fall in love? Or is it a stricter rule about “you do what’s best for this family”? (Note: Bad/cruel parenting is one of my major DNWs, so if you’re going that route, please don’t make the parent uncaring or malicious. Stubborn and narrow-minded is fine, as is the genuine belief that this is what’s best for the child, but ideally they’ll learn from their mistakes or perhaps everything will be interrupted and derailed by Canon Events. This is especially important wrt to Fëanor.) Suggested Character(s): Maedhros, Fingon
Creation/Discovery of soul bonds: How do soul bonds work on a metaphysical level? Can they be broken? Do they have to be nurtured and maintained? What’s long-distance communication like? Heck, what’s short-distance communication like, is it like talking in your mind or sharing your feelings or more abstract than that? Can elves form soul bonds with mortals? And most importantly—how did elves figure out they could soul bond with one another?? I can imagine that would be quite a shock when they’re discovering sex and then suddenly they’re inside each other’s minds! Suggested Character(s): Any Unbegotten Elf Character(s)
Non-romantic/sexual soul bonds: I’m good with practically any relationship here. Explore sibling bonds, twin bonds, parent-child bonds, queerplatonic bonds, found family bonds, adoption bonds, the bond between a Vala and their Maia...any kind of soul bond that is familial or platonic or chosen without regard to romance! (Feel free to take a canon romantic relationship and turn it queerplatonic, I live for that shit!) How are these bonds formed outside of sex? What are the rituals and ceremonies around forming them? Is it a public or private thing? Are non-romantic soul bonds taken seriously, or are they seen as less important than marriage bonds? Since elven parents literally give part of their soul in the creation of the child, is that parent-child bond innate? Suggested Character(s): Aredhel, Any Unbegotten Elf Character(s)
Elven adoption: I nominated this with Kidnap Dads in mind (if you go that route I love fluff for them as well as more nuanced/complicated takes on the situation, but whatever you do don’t make M&M cruel, and please include Maedhros as a parental figure alongside Maglor)...but hey, it could work for Fingon (and Maedhros) adopting Gil-galad! What are traditions around elven adoption? Are there soul bonds created between the adoptive parents and children? Was adoption even a thing in Aman, or is it only practiced in Middle-earth? Did elves adopt mortals and vice versa? Is adoption extended to found family other than a parent-child situation? How is adoption viewed by elvish society, especially if inheritance/succession is a concern? Suggested Character(s): Maedhros, Fingon, Elros Tar-Minyatur, Elrond
The Silmarillion: Noldorin Politics
Original Fëanorian follower(s) who turned on their lords at Sirion: Okay, this is a character tag, but I’m absolutely obsessed with this line: “For the sons of Fëanor that yet lived came down suddenly upon the exiles of Gondolin and the remnant of Doriath, and destroyed them. In that battle some of their people stood aside, and some few rebelled and were slain upon the other part aiding Elwing against their own lords (for such was the sorrow and confusion in the hearts of the Eldar in those days).” Who were these people who followed the Fëanorians into exile, into a Kinslaying, through the burning of the ships, through 30 years of Maglor as a king-regent incapable of treating with the Nolofinwëans, through the scattering of their lords and the harsh conditions of the North, through the Bragollach and the Nírnaeth and a “wild and woodland life” and the Second Kinslaying (where some of them went as far as to abandon children in the winter woods to die because they thought it was what their lord/s would want), through isolation and hatred from every other elven group, through the plan to attack a refugee camp—through ALL OF THAT, and THEN they turn on their lords at Sirion??? Why betray your lords NOW? And the people who DID keep following them after that (after kidnapping children!!!), what were they thinking?? — I firmly believe that Maedhros has many escapees from Angband in his service who are ride or die for him and whose morality was somewhat warped by Angband, but what about Maglor’s followers? Caranthir’s? Ambarussa’s? Even Celegorm and Curufin’s?? There’s just SO MUCH potential for story here, I’m dying to read about them!
Noldorin lines of succession: Was It Sexist Or Was It Not: The Eternal Question aka Why Didn’t Idril Become High Queen After Turgon? Also, what does “eldest of the house of Finwë, and not the least wise” even MEAN, Maedhros?? How did Gil-galad come to power? I find it hard to believe he became king immediately after Gondolin fell; was it a wartime power grab? A battlefield promotion? How did the kingship get established in the first place? Why was Finwë chosen to go with Oromë to Aman? Was Maglor ever really king, or did he only rule as a regent for the missing Maedhros? Suggested Character(s): Finwë, Gil-galad, Maglor
Origins of Gil-galad: I am always so interested in takes on Gil-galad’s parentage. My favorites are Russingon baby Gil (through trans mpreg or adoption, both are good) and secret peredhel Gil (probably an Aegnor/Andreth baby adopted by Orodreth), but I also love Finduilas Is Gil-galad and honestly, any situation is fascinating here—just convince me! A possible way to explore this is through Outsider POV; some noble or historian trying to figure out just what the heck is up with Gil-galad. His parentage being confusing in-canon is so fun!! Suggested Character(s): Gil-galad, Original Nobility of the Noldor
Maglor's Kingship between Maedhros' capture and rescue: Was Maglor ever really king? Did he give up on Maedhros early on, or did he cling to the hope that he still lived? Did his brothers turn to him for support, or did they connive to take responsibility from him? The rift between the Noldor wasn’t healed until Maedhros’ rescue; did Maglor try to cooperate with Fingolfin, or did he keep his people isolated? Was he relieved when Maedhros came back and took responsibility, or was he resentful to lose his power? How does this situation (and Maglor not going to rescue Maedhros) affect M&M’s relationship later on? Suggested Character(s): Maglor, Original Fëanorian follower(s)..., Curufin, Caranthir
Dwarf-Elf relations in the First Age & Dwarf-kingdoms: Dwarf-friends!!! Yes!!! I love elves and dwarves being buds (or partners if you’d like to go that route!) <3 IIRC, Curufin learned Khuzdul, and I’m sure Celebrimbor did too; Caranthir was supposedly rude to the dwarves, but what if that’s just his (and their!) love language? How did relations between the Sindar and the dwarves sour over time? Maedhros was friends with Azaghâl; how did that relationship begin? How did Finrod’s contract with the dwarves blossom into a real friendship? Eöl was also buddies with the dwarves; did he ever bump into Curufin or Caranthir while at a trade festival or something? And the dwarf kingdoms of the First Age are fascinating on their own, too; what was the political structure like? Did the dwarves bring items from the other side of the mountains into Beleriand? How did the petty-dwarves get exiled? What happened to Nogrod and Belegost in the War of Wrath, and were they ever re-established after the sinking of Beleriand? Suggested Character(s): Curufin, Caranthir
Guilds and Noble Houses of Tirion: Give me a Tirion political drama! Finwë trying to appease his lords and craftseldar? Indis integrating into Noldorin society and making connections with the noble houses? Arranged marriage situation between Nolofinwë and Anairë? The younger princes running amok and causing chaos in their elders’ carefully-laid plans and delicately balanced alliances? Suggested Character(s): Finwë, Indis, Original Nobility of the Noldor, Curufin, Caranthir, Maglor
Roles and Responsibilities in the Noldorin Royal Family: There were oodles of princes in Valinor. What did they all do? How did they get the followers who came with them to Middle-earth? Were they free to pursue their own crafts, or did they have responsibilities to the common people? How did this change in Middle-earth when suddenly everyone was in danger and had more pressing needs? What is it like being a re-embodied royal in a society that’s adapted to life without you? Suggested Character(s): Finwë, Indis, Maglor, Curufin, Caranthir, Gil-galad
Fashion as Political Statement: This is an excuse to request Color Coding Politics. Fëanorian red! Nolofinwëan blue! Findis wearing Aggressively Neutral White! Lalwen in orange? Arafinwë in yellow? Finwë in an amazing technicolor dream-coat...or more likely just red, showing his bias once more? Art of this would be absolutely fantastic. I have lots of headcanons about color politics; feel free to ask me about them if you choose this option. Suggested Character(s): Curufin, Caranthir, Gil-galad, Finwë
The Silmarillion: Trauma & Religion
War of Wrath: For a war that took so long and had such wide-reaching repercussions, we really don’t have very many details about this. It’s free real estate, basically! I have my favorite characters (Maedhros, Maglor, Elrond, Elros, Gil-galad...) that you could use to explore this time period, but literally anyone who’s alive at this point is fair game. And OCs! What do the Noldor and Vanyar (and Telerin sailors) feel about the War and interacting with the war-weary exiles and Sindar and Men of late-stage Beleriand? What kind of culture shock/culture clash is there? Were re-embodied exiles permitted to return to Middle-earth, or were they barred from going to war again? Suggested Character(s): Original Noldorin Character, Original Vanyarin Character
Trauma after the War of Wrath for elves and humans & Exiles adjusting to life in the Undying Lands post War of Wrath & Dealing with psychological trauma in Valinor: Trauma was commonplace in Beleriand, but not so much in Valinor. What’s it like for exiles who sail West to be in a society that doesn’t know how to support them? Are the Valar having to learn how to deal with the trauma of living elves super quickly, or are they reticent to change? How do the exiles interact with their re-embodied kin? What do the Vanyar and other Amanyar think of these elves who have been so deeply hurt? What kinds of treatises on psychology are penned by scholars with little to no previous experience? What is therapy like in Valinor? Do the exiles get together for support groups since no one else understands them? Or did the trauma of the Darkening and the First Kinslaying wake up the Amanyar and get their act together before then; are the exiles surprised by the structures already in place to support them? And what about Avari who have been dying steadily all this time from accidents and incidents in Middle-earth? If they’ve been re-embodied, how do they engage with the Eldar who have similar traumas? Suggested Character(s): Estë, Finrod, Maeglin, Original Noldorin Character, Original Vanyarin Character, Rúmil, Any Avarin Elf Character(s)
Worship of the Valar and Religion & Avarin religious culture: Do the Vanyar really worship the Valar, or do they seem them as hyper-powerful neighbors? What are priests and priestesses like in a world where the gods walk among you? How does each kindred of the elves interact with the Valar? Are Maiar viewed as equal worshippers/servants or as deities in their own right? Do the Avari even know about or acknowledge the Valar? Do they worship the stars, or simply Eru? Suggested Character(s): Pengolodh, Rúmil, Any Avarin Elf Character(s)
~~~
Middle-earth Legendarium: Magic & Spirits
Afterlives: This is pretty vague, but I think it’s referring to the various kinds of afterlife. What are the Halls of Mandos like? What happens to spirits who don’t go to Mandos? Do Men pass through Mandos on the way to Beyond? What happens to Men? Are they reincarnated in the more traditional understanding of the word, do they go to some other realm similar to Arda, are they just endlessly partying it up with Eru? Do dwarves really go to the Halls, or is that just a superstition? And of course, what about orcs? Suggested Character(s): Námo
Fate of orc souls after death: Yeah, really, what about orcs? If the orcs were originally elves twisted into Morgoth’s servants, are their spirits still elven? Are they reborn as they once were, elven despite their life as an orc? What about orcs who are many generations removed from their elvish ancestors? Do they have fëar? Can orcs be rehabilitated? I refuse to accept that all orcs are inherently evil; but what does everyone believe in-universe? Suggested Character(s): Námo, Original Orc Character(s)
Foresight and Prophecy and Doom: I’m honestly not sure if this fanon or canon, but Finarfin and his line having foresight through Indis is a wonderful concept and I’d love an exploration of that. How accurate is foresight? Can fate be circumvented? Are prophecies like the Doom of the Noldor self-fulfilling, or are they warnings about possible futures, or are they curses upon people? If you have a high Doom upon you, does that end with your death, or does it follow you to Mandos and beyond? Suggested Character(s): Námo, Finarfin
Songs and Words of Power: Rap battles with Sauron! ...joking aside, song as magic is just fascinating to me. How does this connect to the Ainulindalë and the Song of the World? The elves named themselves Quendi, the Speakers; how do they view the power of words and their ability to change the world around them? Can music be used as a force of destruction or a weapon (battle bard Maglor)? Can it be used to manipulate someone’s mind (Sauron)? Suggested Character(s): Maglor, Sauron
Stars and Starlight: “All light is sacred to the Eldar...but wood-elves love best the light of the stars.” Okay, sorry for being a Hobbit movie apologist on main, but I do love Tauriel! How do elves view starlight? Is it holy, or are the stars more like their friends and guides? Did the Avari choose to remain in Middle-earth partially because of their love for the stars, which were drowned out by the light of the Trees? How does Eärendil feel about being a star; does he feel blasphemous or holy? What legends and superstitions are there among Avari and Men and others who don’t know the origins of Gil-Estel about the new star in the sky? Suggested Character(s): Morwë, Eärendil
The Unseen Realm: This is the in-between world where Frodo goes when he wears the ring, the world that the Nazgûl in their half-life inhabit. Are Ainur able to slip into this realm at will? Did Gandalf walk invisible in Gondolin? How does Sauron manipulate this realm to his purposes? Is this where elves go if they fade? (I don’t usually like Maglor fading, but it could be an interesting way to explore this...) Suggested Character(s): Námo, Sauron, Nazgûl, Maglor
Magical Artefacts & Magical Communications: Palantíri! Galadriel’s mirror! Ósanwë! All sorts of cool ways to talk with magic. Do the Rings of Power enable long-distance ósanwë? Did the Silmarils contain pieces of Fëanor’s soul? What other marvelous magical creations were there that didn’t make it into the Legendarium we know? Suggested Character(s): Sauron, Maglor, Eärendil
~~~
Middle-earth Legendarium: Politics & Lore
Feudalism between Eldar and Edain: We have Edain entering into the service of Noldorin lords (Bëor and Finrod, Hador and Fingolfin, Amlach and Maedhros) and land being given to Men by elves (or not, in Haleth’s case)...how far did this feudal relationship extend? Were the Edain mostly autonomous or were they very much bound to their elven lords? Were there common elves who paid tribute to Edain lords? Can any relationship between elves and Men truly be equal if this is the way they originated? Fealty kink? Suggested Character(s): Curufin, Original Elf Character
Fourth Age Tirion: What’s Tirion like with a bunch of dead people walking around living again, and a bunch of weird legends now imposing in daily life? What’s the first meeting of Rúmil and Pengolodh like—who geeks out over whom? Are the Fëanorians back yet? Is the average elf even really aware of all the nonsense that happened in Middle-earth, or are they extremely unimpressed with King So-and-So of a square of land that’s now underwater trying to cut them in line at the coffee shop? Suggested Character(s): Original Elf Character, Pengolodh, Rúmil of Tirion, Celebrimbor, Elrond, Galadriel
Relationship between Noldor and Dwarves: See “Dwarf-Elf relations in the First Age & Dwarf-kingdoms” in my Silm request for a starting point...but also, was Elrond’s Last Homely House open to dwarves? How did Galadriel come to respect the dwarves, especially after her Sindar kin grew to hate them? Suggested Character(s): Curufin, Celebrimbor, Elrond, Galadriel
Timekeeping between the Death of the Two Trees and the Rise of the Sun and Moon: Tolkien’s math drives me ABSOLUTELY INSANE. His timelines are contradictory, I get headaches just thinking about the length of elf pregnancy, what does aging mean for an immortal species, WHY ARE TREE YEARS LIKE THAT and WHAT IS A YÉN? Please try and make sense of this for me, I beg of thee. I’m especially interested in the time period between the Death of the Trees and the Rise of the Sun and Moon. Did the Noldor wander the Helcaraxë for 3 years or 30? How long was Maitimo in Angband? Did the Sindar even realize something was different? How did people start calculating Sun years? When was the calendar of the First Age adopted? Who did all this math? Is there an in-universe explanation for these contradictions? Do people fight over math? Do the Ainur experience time the same way the Children do? Did some Noldo genius come up with a timekeeping system that worked with the Moon, only for the Sun to come along and muck it up? Suggested Character(s): Pengolodh, Rúmil of Tirion, Original Elf Character, Fëanor - really any scholarly character, tbh!
Treatment of Angband's Escaped Thralls: Which kinds of escapees choose to go to Himring with Maedhros the Tall, and which choose to go to Gondolin and the House of the Hammer of Wrath? Was Rôg an escapee too? Can Maedhros really tell who’s been turned by the Enemy? Does Thingol have the right of it in turning away thralls from Doriath? (If he even does that, I’m now researching this and I’m not sure it’s actually canon...) What was it like for Maedhros and Gwindor to readjust to elven society? Did Elrond grow up surrounded by Fëanorian followers who escaped Angband, and is that where he learned healing? Suggested Character(s): Original Elf Character, Elrond
In-universe authorial bias in historical texts: All of the Legendarium is a history, which means there’s bound to be unreliable narrators. Was Maeglin really as evil as the story says? What gets left out of the narrative? What gets lost in translation? Who lives, who dies, who tells your story? Suggested Character(s): Pengolodh, Rúmil of Tirion
Trade in Middle-earth: What was trade like in First Age Beleriand? What about Second Age trade between Númenor and the mainland? Was Ost-in-Edhil a trade hub? After Sauron returned and traveling became dangerous, what intrepid traders braved the wilds for the sake of goods and money? How was currency developed around the world? Suggested Character(s): Curufin, Celebrimbor, Elrond, Galadriel
Orcs Surviving the Wars: Again, I don’t believe that all orcs are irredeemably, inherently evil. Were they persecuted and stamped out after the Ring War, or did some escape and adapt to a life without a harsh overlord? What’s orc agriculture like? Would Elrond take a chance on rehabilitating an orc in Rivendell? What if orcs were more complicated all along, and it’s the histories that simplified them to cardboard-cutout villains? Suggested Character(s): Original Elf Character, Pengolodh, Celebrimbor, Elrond, Galadriel
The Adventure Zone: Balance
My only non-Tolkien request, oops. Don’t think I’m not as interested in this request, though; I’m the only one who nominated for it, so I picked my very favorite concepts and I’d love to see what you do with them!
Angus McDonald’s Grandfather: This guy’s name was lost to time, and he loves silverware, and he has a grandson, and that’s pretty much all we know about him. Was he involved in the Relic Wars somehow? Did his name get eaten by the Voidfish? I imagine he’s a rather eccentric fellow; how much of that did he pass on to Angus? Is he even real, or was Angus lying to Tres Horny Boys about his destination?
Any Wonderland Adventurer(s): I’d love to see what happens to the other people who go to Wonderland before our boys. Do they all die? How many get what they want and get out? Do any of them have weaker moral compasses than THB and agree to advertise for Edward and Lydia? What if Edward or Lydia fell in love with an adventurer and trapped them there? What kinds of things do people sacrifice to the Wheel? We know about the Escape Game and the Healing Game; what about the Recovery Game? How long has Wonderland been around? How has it evolved over time? What was it like before Edward and Lydia got ahold of the Animus Bell? How did they get ahold of it? (Personally I think Barry just gave it to them...but did he have to go through the trials first?)
Differences within species between the Two-Sunned World and Faerun: I love the fanon that Two-Sun elves are juuust a little different from Faerun elves...like Taako’s echolocation, for example. But what if this applies to the other species like gnomes and dwarves and even humans? How are the Seven Birds just a liiiitle off from everyone else around them? Also, Cat Elves. This is an excuse for Two-Sun Cat Elves. GIVE TAAKO A TAIL. (I mean, or not, do what you want, but I’d love to see that, lol.) Suggested Character(s): Any Member(s) of the IPRE, Original Character(s)
Reclaimers before Tres Horny Boys: Who were the other Reclaimers? Who did Lucretia trust to carry out this dangerous mission? How did they all each, inevitably fail? What if Magic Brian was a Reclaimer gone wrong? What was the last straw for Lucretia, the last failure that made her scheme to get her boys back? And the other Reclaimers weren’t officially disbanded right away; how did they feel about the new guys in town, and losing their jobs to these doofuses? Suggested Character(s): Lucretia, Original Character(s)
The Relic Wars: There were wars about the Relics!!! Wars!! That everyone forgot!! Wars where people that THB knew died!! And then we never get into this in canon! It drives me nuts! I would love to see an exploration of this chaotic time period, what the IPRE did to mitigate the damage, which relics were obvious and terrifying and which were secret and terrifying, etc... I’ve written a bit about Relic War-era Hurloane, but what were the other NPCs doing? (Or Hurley and Sloane too, I’d love to see your take on them too!) When Lucretia wiped everyone’s memories, what was lost? (I suspect Angus’ Grandfather got caught up in that...) How did those missing memories lead people to the Bureau of Balance? Suggested Character(s): Lucretia, Any Member(s) of the IPRE, Angus McDonald’s Grandfather
The Robot World's crystal post-Story and Song: The IPRE promised to return the Robot World’s crystal if they ever managed to defeat the Hunger...and we know they can plane hop from the casino liveshow...so, did they ever return the crystal? How did that go down? How does the Robot World rebuild itself? And if we’re going into it being the (K)nights Arc’s setting, are there other characters than Troth that we might recognize? Suggested Character(s): Magnus Burnsides, Lucretia, Any Member(s) of the IPRE
Worlds that survived the Hunger: In the worlds where the IPRE found the Light of Creation before the Hunger arrived, what was it like for the people there who had to endure the Hunger’s attack? What was the scope of the destruction? How did they rebuild afterward? Does uniting against a common enemy bring the people of the world together and create more Tesseralia-like societies? How many people knew about the IPRE, and what did they think about them? When they hear the Story and Song, what’s the reaction? If they didn’t know about the IPRE what myths do they create to explain the Hunger? Suggested Character(s): Lucretia, Original Character(s)
OC Interview Tag
Rules: Pick a character from your WIP, and have them answer these 15 questions, then tag 15 people!
I was tagged by the amazing @dove-actually (yours was so funny btw!) I was halfway through doing one for my WIP Crimson Daughters when I got this but I’d love to do one for one of my LotR OCs as well. Thanks for the tag!
Allow me to introduce you one of the only two original MCs in my Lord of the Rings fan fic ‘In Shadows’ .... Neniel!
 1: What is your full name?
 I am Princess Neniel Galadhwen, daughter of Legolas and Nenwen. Most people just call me Neniel. I’ve never been one for formality and titles!
2: What does your full name mean?
Neniel is Sindarin for ‘daughter of water/lake’ and is a reference to my heritage as a Water Elf through my mother, Nenwen. Galadhwen is Sindarin for ‘lady of the woods/trees’ and is a reference to my father Legolas, a Wood Elf. I love my names, and they reflect how proud I am of my cultural background.
3: What are your other names/nicknames?
I was often called Sídhiel when I was born, which means ‘Child of Peace’ in Sindarin. My parent’s marriage was the first union between Water Elves and Wood Elves and the two kingdoms had been estranged from each other for centuries. I guess everyone thought I was going to be the great unifier or something, but I’m not that interested in diplomacy. My SO calls me Lalaith, which means Laughter, because that is what I love doing the most. I’ve also been called the Lady of Mirkwood, Lady Neniel and Nenuial (after the lake of the same name).
Wow, that’s a lot of names. But I’m an Elf. This is pretty much normal for us.
4: What’s your gender?
I am female.
5: What’s your sexuality?
My what? Hmm ... never thought about it before. Romance has never been high on my priorities. After all, I’m still considered a young elf. There IS however a certain young man I’ve had my eye on lately ...
6: Where are you from?
I’m from Mirkwood and live in the halls of my grandfather, Thranduil. But because of my mother I often spend a lot of time travelling between Mirkwood and my other grandfather’s kingdom by the Sea of Rhun. I love both, and feel equally at home in either place.
7: How old are you?
I am twenty four, which is still very young for an elf and I’m constantly treated as a child who needs to be protected. They say I’m naive. I don’t see it myself.
8: What is your magic form/what species are you?
I am an Elf, partly of Sindar and Avari heritage.
9: What does your human form look like?
Human form? I think you mean Elf form. Like most of my mother’s kin I am very short, about the same as a human woman of average height, which makes me stand out among the tall Elves of my father’s people. I’m physically small and look younger than my years. I have long dark hair, pale skin and silver eyes.
10: What’s your aesthetic?
Water. Blues, silvers and greens. Long flowing robes, pretty silks, bare arms, soft shades, sparkles. Gently lapping stream. Green leaves softly shimmering in the sun.
11: Who’s your best friend?
I’ve always been fairly solitary. My only real friend (but more like a brother) is Faervel. He is a member of my grandfather’s guard and was assigned to be my protector at birth. He’s the only other young elf in Mirkwood (he’s only 187) and we bonded straight away. He accompanies me on my travels between Mirkwood and Rhun. Faervel puts on a serious face all the time, but I can make him laugh more than anyone else can (that is, until a certain young man from Rohan shows up). We love to sing together and tell stories.
12: Would you ever get a piercing/ tattoo?
If it looked pretty! Don’t think my grandfathers would approve though. But I’m not the sort of person who would think things like this through before doing them.
13: When are you happiest?
In my mother’s secret pool outside the palace in Mirkwood. She hated being under trees all the time and wanted a place to connect with water. When I stand underneath the waterfall and feel the power and the energy within the water I feel bright and alive, like I’m part of the lifeblood of the world. I love it there, which is why I took a certain special someone there ...
14: What’s your biggest secret?
I’m very open and tend not to have secrets. But ... I guess it would be how upset I am over the strife between my two families. I never wanted to be caught in the middle. I just wanted to be left alone. I hide just how much it troubles me. I don’t like to show my demons. I hide it behind laughter and silliness.
Although ... I did have one pretty huge secret involving a young prince of Gondor.
15: What was your first impression of Eldarion?
*smiles and stares into the distance for several minutes*
Eldarion? Well, he’s reckless, arrogant, often bad-tempered and petty ... but I saw the softer side straight away. The side which is like me: trying to live up to someone else’s expectations. I didn’t believe he could be real when I first met him. That’s why I call him Olon ... dream.
That was fun! Not sure if any of you have been tagged before but feel free to do it again/ignore it if you want! @edelweissroses (one of the OCs in GMDS?? I loved them!) @the-real-rg, @theswordofpens,  @farrradays, @blueinkblot, @ownworldresident  @mlgwrites and  anyone else who wants to do it! My mind is completely blank at the moment
Will post my half complete one for Crimson Daughters soon!
The Worm Reads: Empire of Storms, Ch 32 - 33
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Aedion had been up half the night, debating the merits of every possible place to meet his father.
I am such a sucker for good parent/child relationships in fiction (extra bonus points if it’s adopted parents/child relationship) but honestly Assdion needs to stay the fuck away.
Beforehand Assdion put Lysandra to bet after she shifted back from some other form.
[Aedion] flipped back the crisp cotton sheets with one hand and then laid [Lysandra] down, her once-again long hair covering her high, firm breasts. So much smaller than the ones he’d first seen her with. He didn’t care what size they were—they were beautiful in both forms.
Uhhh does SJM not get how creepy this sounds? Lysandra is asleep and Aedion is staring at her boobs thinking about how beautiful they are?? God damnit SJM just stick to erotica if your characters are gonna be horny 24/7.
Lysandra made [Aedion] change out of his dirty travel clothes, barged into Aelin and Rowan’s room wearing no more than her own bedsheet, and took whatever she wanted from the Fae Prince’s armoire. Aelin’s barked Get out! was likely heard from across the bay, and Lysandra was smirking with feline wickedness as she returned, chucking the green jacket and pants at him.
This sounds like the beginning of a college fic where all the characters live in the same dorm. Not a fucking epic fantasy series constantly compared to LOTR. Tolkien must be rolling in his grave.
Dorian stirred, a cool breeze fluttering in as if his magic awoke as well, squinted at them both, then at the clock atop the mantel.
WHAT. Is this a medieval settings or not? The characters all use swords and bow and arrows and there’s hints of medieval Britain monarchies everywhere but the characters have clocks? What is this word building?
Gods, the females in his court ate more than [Aedion] did.
This is prompted after Lysandra eats breakfast. After we have already been told she burns a lot of energy with her shape shifting. Go fuck yourself, Assdion.
Aedion opened the door, finding the cadre precisely where he’d guessed they’d be at this hour: eating breakfast in the taproom. The two males halted as they entered. And Aedion’s eyes went right to the golden-haired man—one of two, but … there was no denying which one was … his.
I am actually so stressed. Either A) Aedion is gonna act like a dick to his poor father and be treated as right for it, or B) SJM is gonna turn Gav into a dick just so Aedion can angst over his daddy issues. Place your bets, folks.
“You look … ,” Gavriel breathed, sinking into his chair. “You look so much like her [Aedion’s mom].”
HHHHH SJM STOP I HATE THIS SHITTY BOOK AND ASSDION I DON’T WANT THESE FEELS....
“They could have cured [mama Aedion] in the Fae compounds, but she wouldn’t go near them, wouldn’t let them come for fear of Maeve”—[Aedion] spat the name—“knowing I existed. For fear I’d be enslaved to her as you were.”
I wish Assdion’s mom could’ve been a character, but nope, gotta kill off potentially awesome characters for the sake of main character pain. I know that’s just a thing that happens in 95% of stories at this point, but SJM literally only brings these dead characters up once or twice and it has no other impact on her main characters or the plot.
“I’m sorry,” his father said, those Lion’s eyes full of such grief Aedion wondered if he’d just struck a male already down. “I’m not the one you need to apologize to,” he said, turning toward the door.
Am I a dumb dumb, or... who the fuck is Assdion talking about? Is he talking about apologizing to.. Assdion’s mom? I’m so confused.
Assdion stomps out after his little tantrum. I mean, I understand why he’s upset, but... I need context? Was Gav forced to take the blood oath to Maeve, or was it his own choice? ‘Cause if it was the latter yeah he’s kinda a shitty dad, but if it’s the former, it’s not his fault??? This series is batshit confusing.
“We need them to work with us. I might have made an enemy of him.” [Lysandra] tucked her hair over a shoulder. “Trust me, Aedion, you have not. If you’d told him to crawl over hot coals, he would have.”
HHHH FUCK IT GAV IS A GOOD DAD..... I just feel so so sorry for him. He’s just a punching bag for everyone else. Protect Gav 2k18
He laughed, surprised he could even do so. “He’s a handsome bastard, I’ll give him that.” “I think Maeve likes to collect pretty men.” Aedion snorted. “Why not? She has to deal with them for eternity. They might as well be pleasant to look at.”
I mean a lot of those men have confirmed that they were forced to take the blood oath and are now basically slaves to her but sure, tee hee oh Maeve that slutty bitch, collecting only the hottest young men to enslave! Fuckin’ end me.
Bearing both Goldryn and Damaris for once, Aelin walked into the Sea Dragon two hours later and wished for the days when she could sleep without the dread or urgency of something pulling at her.
Greaaat, back to Alien’s POV.
A grand total of five minutes before Lysandra barged in, Rowan had awoken—and begun the process of awakening her, too. Slowly, with taunting, proprietary strokes down her bare torso, her thighs, accented with little biting kisses to her mouth, her ear, her neck.
EWWWWWWW if I wanted to read this shit, I’d go look up fanfiction. Preferably fanfiction with characters I’m endeared to and actually ship. Skip!
Gavriel and Fenrys were now sitting with Rolfe at the table in the back of the taproom, no sign of Aedion, both a bit wide-eyed as she swaggered in.
This is a nit pick but Gav/Fenrys always being described together irks me. They have the literal same reaction to everything. Like, are they doing this all in unison? Actually, that’s a pretty funny mental image.
Rowan took up a spot beside [Aelin] his knee brushing hers. Like even a few feet of distance was unbearable.
GDI. It’s a meeting. With a Pirate Lord. And all Rowboat can think about is getting his dick wet inside of Alien. I’m almost ready to tap out.
“What is this,” [Aelin] said, stabbing a finger near the main line of figures stretched across the middle of the continent. “It’s the latest report,” Rolfe drawled, “of the locations of Morath’s armies. They have moved into position. Aid to the North is now impossible. And they stand poised to strike Eyllwe.”
Ooo, action scene? Please action scene, I cannot handle any more scenes of these assholes being horny around one another.
Next chapter!
“Eyllwe has no standing army,” Aelin said, feeling the blood drain from her face. “There is nothing and no one to fight after this spring—save for rebel militia bands.”
Starts right where the last one left off, as per SJM’s protocol
Rowan said to Rolfe, “Do you have exact numbers?” “No,” the captain said. “The news was given only as a warning—to keep any shipments away from the Avery. I wanted their opinions”—a nod of the chin toward the cadre—“for handling it.“
??? Is it me or is this expression really fucking weird? Was “a nod of the head” not good enough?
“Why attack Eyllwe, though?” Fenrys asked. “And why move into position but not sack it?” [Aelin] couldn’t say the words aloud. That she’d brought this upon Eyllwe by mocking Erawan, because he knew who Celaena Sardothien had cared for, and he wanted to break her spirit, her heart, by showing her what his armies could do. What they would do, whenever he now felt like it. Not to Terrasen … but to the kingdom of the friend she’d loved so dearly.
Once again, we’re about to witness the destruction of a kingdom and all Alien cares about is her stupid feelings. Go fuck yourself Alien.
“You are the heir of the Mycenian people,” Aelin said. “And I have come to claim the debt you owe my bloodline on that account, too.” Rolfe did not move, did not blink. “Or were all the sea dragon references from some personal fetish?” Aelin asked.
Tumblr media
SJM JUST USED THE WORD “FETISH” IN HER EPIC FANTASY SERIES. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
[Aelin] allowed a flicker of her magic to rise to the surface then, allowed the gold in her eyes to glow like bright flame. Gavriel and Fenrys straightened as her power filled the room, filled the city. The Wyrdkey between her breasts began thrumming, whispering.
I’m sorry, lovely readers, I keep ragging on about this, but holy fuck. I hate it so much. SJM wants this scene to be all epic and show what a special snowflake badass Alien is but then she undercuts all that supposed tension by drawing focus to her boobs I just. ajhdafdfagfds dj hdsa im b rea kin  g
Alien lets loose some of her power that literally shakes the world and rings bells or some shit? idk i guess its 2deep4me
“What the rutting hell was that?” Rolfe at last demanded. Fenrys and Gavriel became very interested in the map before them. Rowan said smoothly, “Milady has to release bits of her power daily or it can consume her.”
ROWBOAT CONFIRMED FOR NICE GUY HOLY SHIT
Tumblr media
Aedion and Lysandra arrived after some time—and her cousin only spared Gavriel a passing glance as he stood over the map and fell into that general’s mindset, demanding details large and minute. But Gavriel silently stared up at his son, watching her cousin’s eyes dart over the map, listening to the sound of his voice as if it were a song he was trying to memorize.
Gav deserves a better series than this. I want to take him, Manon, Darrow, and Rolfe away so they can be at peace. How does Darrow/Gavriel sound to everyone? Pure old dads who rule their kingdom fairly, bringing peace and prosperity forward. What a lovely image.
SJM described the meeting rather than shows. It’s basically 90% everyone gushing over how powerful Alien is. Skip!
“You once said I would pay for my arrogance. And I did. Many times. But Sam and I took on your entire city and fleet and destroyed it. All for two hundred lives you deemed less than human. So perhaps I’ve been underestimating myself. Perhaps I do not need you after all.” [Aelin] turned again, and Rolfe sneered, “Did Sam die still pining after you, or did you finally stop treating him like filth?”
Dick move, maybe, but I mean... he’s not wrong. The Assassin’s Blade is literally just Alien being pissy towards Sam for no reason and then he gets angry when their master beats lAlien’s face in (you know, what any normal functioning human being would react like) and she’s suddenly frothing at the mouth to fuck him. Maybe I should review TAB next.........
Rowboat chokes Rolfe and throws him down, and everyone smirks. How are these characters adults? They’re all written like immature teenagers. Anyways, a bell rings out, signifying something bad.
Aelin watched as black - darker than the ink that had been etched there - spread across [Rolfe’s] fingers, to his palms. Black such as only the Valg could bring.
Please action scene I can’t handle one more “witty’ “banter” conversation between these assholes
The door banged open, and Rolfe’s towering figure filled it. “You.” Aelin put a hand on her chest. “Me?”
Pfft. I hated that I snickered at this, but I always laugh at the “dramatic hand on chest” joke.
“And what of your idealism—what of that child who stole two hundred slaves from me? You’d leave the people of this island to perish?” “Yes,” she said simply. “I told you, Rolfe, that Endovier taught me some things.” Rolfe swore. “Do you think Sam would stand for this?” “Sam is dead,” she said, “because men like you and Arobynn have power. But Arobynn’s reign is now over.” She smiled at the darkening horizon. “Seems like yours might end rather soon as well.”
Sam deserves better than this. He was an okay guy to my memory - not a poisonous fuck boy like Rowboat.
“Eight warships teeming with soldiers —at least a hundred on each, more on the lower levels I couldn’t see. They’re flanked by two sea-wyverns. All moving so fast that it’s like storm winds carry them.”
FUCK YEAAAH SEA DRAGONS LETS GO
Rolfe finally breaks down and agrees to join Alien’s war effort. Love it when one of the few good characters is kicked and beaten down to prop up the despicable protagonist. Then we swap to Dorian’s POV.
Aelin was insane, Dorian realized. Brilliant and wicked, but insane. And perhaps the greatest, most unremorseful liar he’d ever encountered.
Dorian, honey, you okay? Blink twice if Alien is holding you captive.
This war would not be won on smiles and manners. It would be won by a woman willing to gamble with an entire island full of people to get what she needed to save them all.
Yeah, doesn’t that make Alien likeable! I know war involves sacrifice and death but Jesus, could she feel even a little remorse? Innocent people may die today but Aelin’s head is so far up her own ass she doesn’t even care.
Fenrys kept at a distance from the others, but Gavriel remained close, his gaze still fixed on his son. Gods, they looked so much alike, moved alike, the Lion and the Wolf.
Stop ittttt Gavriel deserves better.....
Aelin tells Dorian to stay behind and the chapter ends. God, that was a lot of bullshit in two chapters.
6: Which OC did you forget about?
If I could remember them, then they wouldn’t qualify forthis question, would they? Okay, but more seriously, in most cases, if I havean OC, and I’ve forgotten about them, I’ve also forgotten about the entirestory they’re in, so at least they’re not forgotten all alone, but are in thecompany of everyone else in that story. I don’t make characters just to makecharacters, and honestly I’m always a little surprised every time I rememberthat sometimes others do exactly that. However, interpreting this questionslightly differently, in the original fiction edited version of A Draught ofLight, I do have a character who’s actually pretty significant who kind of justvanishes near the end of the story. Presumably she went home, but like…withouteven saying goodbye, or without even commenting on all the crazy shit thathappened? I need to do another edit to give her a better exit.
11: Share the last paragraph you wrote.
Ah, this question comes at like the worst possible time,because the last full paragraph I wrote (as opposed to editing), I was thinkingas I wrote it, “I need to fix this later, this is a wall of text.” But here itis, anyway:
The doors opened onto a warmly-litspace that was bright enough to see everything up close, but dim enough thatthe brain ignored most of what was going on in the distance. A plush, velvetycarpet enveloped his bare feet, in a violet-red that immediately called to mindancient royalty. It drew away from him in a straight line and Pitch Black feltsure he knew what awaited him at the end. Because he knew this, he didn’t lifthis eyes right away.. Not straight ahead, at least. He wanted to get a bettersense of the room around him, first. Out of the corner of his eyes, the roomwas not so huge as he had first thought. Some of the walls were deeply polishedwood, and they reflected light from the chandeliers that have light to thewhole room. Pitch Black wasn’t going to stare at them too closely now, but hehad the impression that they were quite intricate. Along the walls, where therewasn’t polished wood, there were sections of stone, that seemed to glitter—no.The stone wasn’t glittering, those were pools and fountains. There seemed likean excessive amount of them, even if Sandy had a serious bath sex fetish (whichwouldn’t be bad, just surprising that it hadn’t been mentioned when so muchelse had) but then Cosmo supplied a more sensible answer. The pools andfountains were for everyone, and not necessarily for having sex in. Obviously,in a space where everyone was expecting to have as much sex as they wanted, itwould be a good idea to give people a chance to wash between partners or acts.And if Sandy had the money to buy him gold jewelry to wear for one night, itmade sense that he had enough money to put bath fixtures in that were luxuriousand fit the theme. The space in the rest of the room was taken up with beds andcouches, tables and chairs of many kinds, some curtains and screens providingmoderate separation between groupings. Opulent patterns and deep jewel tonesdefined almost everything in fabric. Off to the left, deep in the room, heglimpsed the gleam of wood and glassware that indicated a bar. All thisinformation about the things in the room he took in in an instant. He didn’tworry about it too much, either. What ought to draw his attention, and did,were the people. There were maybe twenty people there, maybe a few more, butnot a crowd. Which made sense, considering, well, the limits of humanendurance—and probably the management of group dynamics. Cosmo was suddenlystruck by the thought that Sandy just really liked friends with benefitsrelationships, and he also liked having a lot of friends.
15: How do you name settings/characters?
With settings, the thing that I keep in mind is that peoplearen’t really that creative when naming things. Is there a hill by the place?The place is going to be named after that, or maybe it’ll be named somethinglike “Hill in the language spoken when people first started living here” Hill.Is there a river? Is there a bay? Is there a certain type of tree really commonhere? A certain kind of weather? Is there a natural feature that looks like aneyeball/arm/leg/head/whatever? What’s the most memorable thing in the place’shistory? The place can be named after any of those kinds of things, and inalternate world stories I think of my naming as using a translation conventionso that the place names sound to the reader the same as they sound to the mainpoint of view character. The characters aren’t speaking English, but if theyhear the name of a place as, I don’t know, Redleaf, or something, then it’sgoing to be called Redleaf in the story.
Sometimes I do like to make up names for the sound, though,and for that, it depends utterly on the connotations I have of certain sounds.And that’s going to depend on…well,the entire history of English as well as my vocabulary and all my reading andreal life experiences. Also Tolkien, probably, because I read the Hobbit andLOTR as a kid, and JRR was much more serious about the development and sound oflanguage than I will ever be.
Oh, and in one of my settings, I name places by trying toimagine what a current place-name would sound like if it was used and garbledover a few thousand years.
Characters are a bit different. Sometimes I do go tobaby-naming websites if I have an idea of the sort of name I want, but moreoften I don’t, because looking up names isn’t furthering the story. If thesetting is on Earth, I’ll pick a name that I won’t mind writing or hearing inmy head for the whole story. Something I’ve heard or seen before. I likelearning random names in the hope that one of them will stick and I’ll be ableto find it when I’m trying to think up a name again.
Other things I have done to name characters: picked a wordthat has something to do with the character and run it through severaldifferent languages in a translator and changed it until it seemed more name-y;had a fantasy world where, for no reason but my whims, people’s names wereunusual, polysyllabic, but real, English words (I never finished that story butI had so much fun with the part I did write); and done the hideousaren’t-I-clever thing of naming my characters after other famous characters inthe English language literary canon. Hopefully I’ve given up this last.
Mainly, I try to choose ordinary names for characters thatcome from Earth, because I don’t really care for generational stories, sothere’s no way that the parents of a baby would know, when naming their baby,that the child would end up in any kind of adventure.
19: What does your editing/revising process look like?
For short things: I allow myself to write slowly, and then Ido one read through for both copyediting and content-level edits. This would bewhat I did for the stories for the kinkmeme prompts. I know it might sound alittle strange to characterize the writing of a story every two days as ‘slowwriting,’ but the stories were very short, of course.
And, honestly, for longer fics, it’s mostly the sameprocess, except chapter by chapter. For the novels that I really, really wantto be good, there’s at least two full editing rounds, as well as searches forwords that signal I used a weaker word than I could have (very, really, andothers).
But the process is just…reading everything slowly andcarefully, and changing what needs to be changed to make the story work betterand say what I want it to say. I don’t do things like printing everything outto make pen corrections by hand, I don’t change the size or font to literallysee the words differently, I don’t, Heaven forbid, just straight-up rewrite thewhole thing from scratch…I don’t do a lot of things.
Maybe I should, but no one’s called me out on my terribleediting yet.
Oh, and I also have a document where I can paste substantialsections or well-written, but irrelevant sentences that have been cut from thework to be published. That way I don’t have to feel bad about deleting stuffthat took me plenty of time and energy to produce, but I can still effectivelyget rid of it, while I know it’s still there if I need to put it back later. That’sprobably the closest thing to a Real Writing Tip here.
Writer Questions!
tagged by @ma-sulevin. Thanks, love!! ^_^
1. How many works in progress do you have?
About three? The Dead Season and Teen Wolf, both of which are nearly finished, and then Unsigned, my post-Trespasser Papae!Solas fic, which has taken a major backseat lately, but I hope to get back to it soon.
2. Do you/would you write fan fiction?
Currently, it’s the majority of what I write! Though I’ve only really written it for the past year and a half. Before now, the last time I wrote fanfiction was when I was like fifteen. I LOVE IT.
3. Do you prefer paper books or ebooks?
Personally, I prefer paper. Though I hold no grudges either way.
4. When did you start writing?
When I was a little kid. The first things I remember writing were nature poems in maybe second grade, and then I moved onto fiction. I used to really want to be a horror writer, like when I was in elementary school. I was very into Stephen King and R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series. I think I used to scare my teachers, as I was this dinky little girl with huge glasses that wanted to write stories about serial killers possessed by ghosts. Look, everyone, I turned out fine! Lol. I think.
5. Do you have someone you trust that you share your work with?
Outside of fanfic, my husband has been my first reader since graduate school (where we met). He still is for my original fiction, though I don’t let him read my fanfic but for in snippets. In fandom, I talk to @thevikingwoman a LOT about my work and my stories and progress and ideas. She probably knows as much about the universe I’ve built and all of its unwritten lore as I do. But when it comes to the actual writing, I don’t show it to anyone until it’s up at AO3.
6. Where is your favorite place to write?
My desk. I can typically get work done anywhere, as long as it’s quiet.
7. Favorite book as a child?
Like I said before, I really loved trashy horror novels as a child. R.L. Stine’s Fear Street first and foremost. I also really loved Chris Van Allsburg--Jumanji especially. This probably says...something about my current aesthetic and obsession with surrealism, ie: David Lynch and Twin Peaks and how that sort of thing will occasionally sneak its way into my fanfiction. But I also really loved A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle as a child, and Afternoon of the Elves by Janet Taylor Lisle, and Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume. I also loved The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson. The character that my url is named after (Galadriel Jones) is nicknamed Gilly, after Galadriel “Gilly” Hopkins.
8. Writing for fun or publication?
For sanity? It’s kind of a compulsion. In terms of my original fiction, I have had several publications (no books yet, just short stories), though I haven’t sent anything out to journals in about two years at this point. I am excited to get back to my own fiction soon. Though I came from a tradition of literary fiction, I never really liked it there. I think that my heart will eventually end up in the YA spectrum.
9. Have you taken any writing classes?
Yes, like 35,000 workshops. As an undergraduate, and I have an MFA in Creative Writing as well. I finished that in 2011.
10. What inspired you to write?
I don’t know? I think it’s just always been my instinct to tell stories. I know I’ve said this here before, but when I was a kid, I was kind of a compulsive liar, and I know now that it was a storytelling instinct. I didn’t lie about stuff that mattered. Like I didn’t steal a cookie from the cookie jar and blame it on my sister. I would miss school because I was sick, and then tell my teachers that the reason I was absent was because my family had gone up to our family’s cabin in Door County (we do not have a cabin lol). I once convinced like twelve girls in fourth grade that I had actually gone to a different elementary school for a long time before meeting them, a catholic all girl’s school, and it was a real school in town, and some of them had even gone there?? It still worked lol. Again, I used to scare my teachers. The cool ones got it, but the other ones would like, call my parents in. My parents were like, “What? Oh. She’s just...having fun. Don’t mind her.” When I was a kid they were pretty good at fostering my weirdness. That changed eventually, but it did me some good.
At some point I figured out how to write stories, probably like in third grade. I literally started out writing what I guess I would now call...Christmas fanfiction? Lol. I would write stories about these various elves that lived in the North Pole. Or about this town where it was Christmas all year round. Then I got into horror and Chris Van Allsburg, and I wrote weirder stuff, and then eventually, I started reading lots of fantasy (like LotR), and more poetry, and I went back to poetry, and I eventually started writing *NSync and Backstreet Boys fanfiction when I was a teenager. I consider my first actual, real short stories of original fiction to be written when I was about seventeen, and then in college, that’s when I guess I really just...specialized. It’s honestly all I’ve ever done since, in terms of passion.
I was inspired to return to fanfiction because Solas broke my heart so bad, and I was postpartum, and flooded with so many emotions I didn’t know what to do. I had to write it out. I had to get it all OUT. I think many of us can relate to that lol.
Going to a different city or country in order to study is exciting and new, however, it often includes one unfortunate thing - moving. Living without the parental guidance might seem thrilling at first but it often comes with a cost of smaller living space in a dorm. Also, moving all of your stuff across the entire country is no short of a hassle, therefore, you will quickly find out that you own too much stuff (and if you don't, I'm bowing, you won at minimalism) and you simply can't have it all.
So I found myself standing in front of my bookshelves with around 600 hundred unread books - which ones should I bring? How much variety do I want? How many languages? Hardbacks or paperbacks? Should I just scrap the entire thing and go and find the closest library?
So after long and hard thinking, I'm bringing you from my new dorm (which looks like it was furnished in 1981) my university tbr pile.
Click keep reading to learn more about the books!
Life of Pi (Yann Martel)
Life of Pi is another well-known book on my tbr, mostly thanks to its film adaptation. Pi is an Indian teenager and he ends up stuck on the boat with a tiger and then comes to some life revelations. I have seen the movie but I remember nothing. The tiger is named after a person due to the clerical mistake.
goodreads
The Hobbit (J. R. R. Tolkien)
The Hobbit has been on my tbr for ages, I am in love with the LOTR movies and wanted to read the books for a long time.
This book is about Bilbo Baggins, your average next-door hobbit who doesn't like adventures, but in a shocking turn of events, he ends up going on one with bunch od dwarves in order for them to reclaim what's theirs. A classic. I love it. But I'm progressing really slow.
goodreads
Breakfast of Champions (Kurt Vonnegut)
Everyone loves Slaughter no. 5  including me and I've been long overdue in reading another Kurt Vonnegut. This one is about a writer and as Vonnegut's works go, its a satire about stuff.
goodreads
Gravity's Rainbow (Thomas Pynchon)
Lisa Simpsons´ favourite book. This is what sold it to me. I have no idea what this book is about but Wikipedia says it's about WWII Europe. I would refer you to Goodreads to read the synopsis, but it is not helpful. People say its good tho.
goodreads
Knihy nocí planých (Ján Smrek)
Ján Smrek is one of the most famous Slovak poets and rightfully so.  I read one of his book for school when we were learning about 1930s poetry and vitalism and this collection is pretty much that.
For those of you who don't know, vitalism is characterised by positivity, poems about love, travelling ad by general feel-good feeling.
goodreads
Origin (Dan Brown)
The avid followers might remember me already reading this book. Unfortunately, I suffer from a disease where I start million books and finish none of them. So here we are.
Origin is the fifth instalment in Robert Langdon series, which follows the titular character, a Harvard professor who solves mysteries- In the fifth book he is brought to Barcelona a gets caught in the fight between religion and science.
goodreads
Anne Of Green Gables (L. M. Montgomery)
Anne is a charming redhead, who ends up being adopted by a pair of siblings living on a Prince Eduard Island in Canada, There she starts going to school and fun shenanigans ensue.
I love the 1980s adaptation and can't wait to reread this masterpiece before delving into the newest Netflix adaptation.
goodreads
The Copper Gauntlet (Cassandra Clare & Holly Black)
I have read the first instalment in this series last summer and I fell in love with this Harry Potter-esque fantasy. This series follow a trio of friends taught in this magic school by the same master and each year they have to face an evil entity trying to kill them. Standard HP stuff. Love that.
goodreads
Stories and Prose Poems (Alexander Solzhenitsyn)
This book has travelled the world with me. I kept it by my side while travelling in order to break up the dense books I was reading with some breezy stories by one of my favourite authors. Solzhenitsyn's book centre around post-WWII Russia and feature realities of life then. I am halfway through and I highly recommend.
goodreads
Beloved (Toni Morrison)
Toni Morrison was a great black writer who has written several outstanding books about being black. Thanks to then she won several prices including Pulitzer and Nobel Prize for literature.
Beloved is about the ghost of a deceased child and how this child affects the family and their relationships with each other. More than a ghost story, this book dissects the feelings of family members living in a post Civil War USA.
He’d be the kind of person to     own a fidget spinner/cube
I think Saeyoung has self     harmed before
Relationship
needs reassurance like he needs     air
Demands cuddles 25/8
still tries to push MC away some times out of fear for their safety
flusters easy
pretty good at being romantic
but probably turns it into a meme somehow
Saeran
General
Major trust issues
PTSD, anxiety, depression,     insomnia
This poor child
Please help him
Self harms
Night terrors
Saerans night terrors would     consist of screaming and trying escape the room out of pure fear
Panic attacks
Side note; after he’s calmed     down after the panic attack, he’d really appreciate his partner just     holding him
Time for some things a little     more light hearted
Loves making shapes out of     clouds
Really good at art
He won’t admit it, but he loves     his brother and he’s glad to be back with him
Great cook
Fills up sketchbook after     sketchbook of images of his nightmares
I said lighthearted but we     always come back to angst don’t we
Relationship
asexual
I see a lot of people making     Saeran very sexual, which is fine
But personally I think he’s     asexual
Also gives 0 fucks about     someone’s gender
Tsundere
“You’re a fucking idiot     that needs to eat or you’ll die”
What a sweetheart
Also needs reassurance and     patience
V
General
depressed
Why do I always want to hurt     these characters
HIS HAIR SMELLS LIKE BERRIES
FIGHT ME
Doesn’t get sick easily
But when he is sick it’s pretty     bad
Also probably doesn’t look     after himself
At all
It’ll just be enough to pass as     ‘healthy’
Relationship
Biromantic & Asexual
Me and my asexual headcannons     honestly
Also loves cuddles
Always soft??? He’s like an     actual human pillow
It’s insane
please look after him he wont do it himself
Vanderwood
General
doesn’t enjoy his work, but it     must be done otherwise he dies
Scared of dying
Not the pain, just the thought     of not existing anymore scares him
Probably smells like cigarettes     and fuel
Won’t admit it but he has a lot     of respect for Saeyoung, especially after everything with his brother and     the agency
Likes the idea of the RFA but     probably not enough to join it
Writes poetry
Don’t ask
Relationship
pansexual
Tsundere like Saeran
Normal people have pet names     like 'babe’ or 'darling’
Not him
He’s more of a 'idiot’ or     'bastard’ kind of guy
Rika
I’ve never had a big opinion on     Rika, she was just the antagonist of the game to me, so I guess I never     really thought beyond that? Maybe I can come up with some in the future
