Plant Portraits

(pst- psssssst!- Hey, hey you. Yeah, you! Want to see something cool? look at this post by @hellishgayliath. It's about the characters shown here! They worked on it for a week straight, so check it out!) . . .

Hi, yes, hi, hello. Yeaaaaaah- steering away from the angst me & Helli brewed while I recover from crying. This was inspired exactly a month ago from this ask I made to Helli ask bout their oc's fav plants. I wanted to try out a new rendering style & thought this be a good opportunity + plant practice

Pico; He likes cinnamon plants/trees & likes to knaw on cinnamon sticks. So I did cinnamon plants! Specifically Cinnamomum cassia, or known as Chinese cassia, that is the most commonly sold cinnamon in North America (yes you are getting plant facts this took longer to research than to draw mainly because I like learning but that's besides the point and I wanna share knowledge) I really like how the leaves came out! Twas very fun. His plants are well maintained, healthy, & green (maybe too green lol) which shows his craft in gardening & care. Luci doesn't have teeth, so she can't really 'knaw' on things, so she didn't like trying Pico's snacks when she stole one. She was coughing on cinnamon for the next hour after. Pico laughed at her, obviously Ingenuity: the quality of being clever, original, and inventive

Bao; He likes wisteria flowers, the purple variation (my fav colour)! I loved loved LOVED coloring these plants, but it feels the most empty out of all of them (Clem is all over the place lmao) but I also kinda like it. Like it reflects their personalities this way, like he's the most upkept in society (despite his utter lack of gardening knowledge). Apparently, American wisteria is a host plant to native butterflies and moths! Add that to another reason Luci likes Bao lol. I feel like anytime she comes to the tea shop, Bao would bring her to the garden he & Pico would be working on. And everytime he's show her the plants he managed on his own they'd be drooping and dying lmao. Bao would be so confused & Luci is just unsurprised. And yes, I did think of & look at the wisteria in demon slayer Versatility: the ability to adapt or be adapted to many different functions or activities

Clem; She likes (take 3 seconds to guess) citrus fruits!! Like her name. So I of course did citrus fruits, lemons & oranges. She has my FAVORITE pose, her reaching for the fruit while juggling some in her other arm is adorable. And of course that cute face of hers! Her plants are just EVERYWHERE & is the only one to touch the ends of the canvas (that I wanted to avoid but oh well, it didn't look good otherwise). Besides, it shows her big personality and chaotic energy children have. Apparently, they're sometimes called 'Christmas oranges' because they're in season in winter months. I thought that was interesting. Does Clem like the cold, Helli or does she despise it like Pico lol? Apparently, they are also those cuties or halos oranges I use to devour as a child lol. And because of said memory, I say that Clem does too. I like to think Luci learns to share, like a child, from Clem, a said child. Luci sells back people's stuff overpriced all the time, and only shares things with Repo. She obviously isn't sharing anything with Pico & she mainly hangs out with Bao at the tea shop so she only buys things. She stole Clem's fruits in front of her once. Let's just say a bunch of sad faces and crying, not only bleed her earholes, but made her feel bad (but she'll never admit it). Does she share things now? Kindaaaaa- no. No, not at all. Only Clem & Repo Affability: the quality of being friendly and easy to talk to

aaaand my inspo board just cuz I was going to draw Vera, I really was! (I was so FRICKIN EXCITED to draw the plant with the braided stock next to the pink flower) but... one look at her head and the pose I chose, I said "No."

Bao was already troubling enough I don't need to build up hate to a character I barely know & already like by getting frustrated with their head (again). So no Vera, Helli, sorrys. Her descriptor was going to be 'nobility' btw

hii!! i was wondering if I could ask what is your usual colouring process? how much time one fully coloured piece and doodle take! I adore your ocs so much they inspire me to draw more myself:3 they feel so alive!

hi anon! thank you vey much, i'm very happy to hear that you feel inspired!

i wrote up a little something for your questions under the cut:

so, first of all, the way i color things ranges from drawing to drawing, especially if i feel like playing around in the process. sometimes i decide to try something out (palette, filter, technique, brush etc) and if i really like how it looks i may recolor the entire drawing lol. point is, there's a lot of sidetracks to my process (especially now, since i'm trying to get used to a different art program than the one i used previously) but the very basics of it are as follows:

1. i sketch and line whatever it is that i want to draw (this might take a while depending on whether i have a solid idea right away or not; in the latter case i might do some thumbnails first to figure out how i want the drawing to look. you can't really see here, but when i line things i usually draw on the same layer as the sketch, and after i'm done i adjust the brightness/contrast settings of the layer to get rid of the sketch underneath. it might seem like i'm just making my life harder this way, especially since this method only works if you sketch with a lighter color (or make it lighter in settings before starting lineart) and your lineart is drawn with a solid opaque brush (which is how i always draw), but it helps me to not get caught up on trying to make the lineart precisely follow the sketch. it also makes changing things on the go much easier, since i only have to erase on one layer.

2. after i'm done lining, i underpaint with a solid color (usually the skin color, but sometimes something random), then block the alpha channel and color over it with flats;

3. i don't color everything at once, instead going piece by piece, which helps to keep the drawing balanced color and contrast wise. i pick a desired area with magic wand and then go about rendering it properly (which usually involves adding some value variance with an airbrush and then laying down shadows/highlights/etc). you can't see this here either, because for some reason i forgot to do it this once, but i also usually lower the opacity of the lineart layer halfway when i color. it helps me concentrate on colors and how they look together better;

4. when i'm satisfied with color, i recolor the lineart to be whatever color i think fits the piece better and change lineart layer settings to either multiply, color burn, or linear burn. after that i just play around with filters, add decorative details, and clean everything up. it's also worth noting that sometimes i starts trying out filters/effects directly while coloring because i want to explore some alternative colors or palettes; i also have a tendency to pick very pale & unsaturated colors so messing around with HSB (hue/saturation/brightness) & depth/contrast settings while coloring helps a lot.

5. cropping it & there you go!

this one took me 1,2 hours. depending on how complex the drawing is it might take me much longer (especially if im working on a commission) so i'd say my average time drawing is somewhere between 2-6 hours. if a drawing takes longer than that i break it apart into several days of work. don't draw for too long! it's bad for your health.

as for sketches, as i mentioned previously, it all depends on whether i know what i want to draw or not, and if i do, i usually just go straight at it:

this one took me 20 minutes. on average, a doodle can take anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes, more if i want to make it look fancy, but at that point it enters the vast limbo between sketch and finished piece.

It's been a while, huh? Turns out that while making games is hard, having a freelance job is harder. And I'm a people-pleaser who is also working on a game engine, so it took several months of several people telling me to make something for myself for me to come back here.

This game is a "short" platformer called Cloudforest, that has been in my brain for over a decade. It started in a custom python engine, got moved to Unity when I started this blog, and is now ported to Godot. This time, maybe I'll actually finish it lol. I like Godot more than Unity for this project so far.

I don't think I ever even showed the art for these rocks here - I spent a week on that formation in the second screenshot, blithely saying to myself "I'll turn it into tiles later" - then I realised how difficult it was going to be and gave up. So, a few years later, I'm finally trying to do it properly, and the first screenshot shows my progress. Needs a bit more space between repeats, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.

The quick technique I discovered to get these rocks done:

1. Start on a dark background and don't be afraid to let things fade into it 2. Draw a flattened, down-pointing triangle in a light colour - that's a rock's top plane 3. Draw a longer triangle under it on the left side - so two points join the light triangle - in a medium colour. That's a rock's left plane 4. Mess around with intermediate colours and a highlight/shine colour until it looks ok

Then repeat steps 2 to 4 a few thousand times, varying it each time…

If you don't mind asking, what was the longest time you ever spend in a drawing? -🦂

Oh jeez, I think it must be this one commission I did for a friend that took me like 19-20 hours (painted background, detailed shading, all that jazz). But it's very possible that it's actually a different commission for the same friend that was all painting, but unfortunately, I don't have the raw file anymore to check the time. But I think it'd also be around 20 hours

These are the extremes though, most of my fully finished artworks take around 3-7 hours to complete, depending on the polish and the detail. The longest I took on a non-painting drawing is 9 hours, and it's this one

Didn't even do the background, lol, it's just an edited photo I took. I fully blame the jacket for that time

If we're counting other art projects, my Brutus animatic, Poplar St MAP part, She Wants Me (To Be Loved) MAP part and Spiral of Ants MAP part 22 triumph over anything else. I can't give you the exact numbers but I can make an estimate

Brutus I made in 3 days, barely sleeping and just chugging through that bad boy like my life depended on it. It was fully made in FlipaClip so I'm not sure about the exact time but excluding the time I slept, rested and ate, it probably took like around 12-18 hours. Which is insane considering how unfinished it is compared to the other projects on this list LMAO. I just remember it took a long time and I was exhausted by the end.

She Wants Me (To Be Loved) took me around 6 hours and 35 minutes to draw character references, then 15 hours and 35 minutes on all the frames, then putting it all together in FlipaClip and tweening it probably took me like another hour? So around 23 hours total.

Poplar ST was my first fully lines and coloured frame by frame animation. The references for the characters took me 4 hours and 15 seconds, and all of the scenes combined took me 26 hours and 12 minutes, then I had to put it all into FlipaClip and animate it which I'd again estimate to around an hour of work, makes it an around 31 hours long project.

Spiral of Ants part 22 was a massive beast, but not even because of the finished product but mostly because I almost finished a different version of that part before losing momentum and deciding on something else entirely. The three frames (one of which is lost to time) of this original concept took 12 hours and 27 minutes to make. Unfortunately, the reference sheets were on my old phone so I don't know how long they took, but seeing how long the other references took me and considering the amount of characters in this, I'd say 4-5 hours is a fair estimate. Then after that didn't pan out, I made two storyboards for my ideas for this part, which took me 3 hours and 54 minutes. Then the references for that took me 4 hours and 51 minutes. Then making the frames for that took me 11 hours and 30 minutes, and tweening I'd say took me around 2 hours in total. In total, that's roughly 40 hours of work for one MAP part.

But these are all animations, so it's a given that they'll take way longer than a singular artwork

As a bonus, have these frames for the original Spiral of Ants concept that never was and some of the refs that survived Nuking (phone change)

(that fire frame alone took me 6 hours)

I have a question about your latest post specifically Team 2 (Team Anko)

I would like to know if you have a specific process on landing on the designs for those particular OCs? Did you imagine particular colours for them? Vibes? Did you do different sketches before you landed on THE design? Were you like this one HAS to have this coloured hair etc Or was it in your head and you just needed to get it down? I'm very curious about the process.

(You know already I love Chihiro's red gloves haha)

I just really like their colour palettes and it got me wondering! Also I saw you hope to put them into a comic one day. I think that would be so cool!

I’m doing alright haha! Life do be tough but yea. Let’s talk OCs!!

I feel like my design method is different for every character (especially Chihiro I’m gonna do her last lol), but for the most part I often think of a concept or base skill and then build off from there. Sometimes I think of stuff like “this character HAS TO HAVE this color hair” but for the most part I kinda just let the characters grow themselves in my head!

For Kaori, my original concept was to have a ninja who solely specializes in genjutsu. Mainly cuz I feel like I hardly ever see OCs like that. And then I thought, mixing poison somehow in would be cool! For her design I was actually messing around on picrew and found that hair color on one and just fell in love with it~ I kinda developed her personality to be kinda “likes to be seen as cute but also will fight”, so I decided to try and use poisonous plants as kind of an inspiration for her design! I also tend to take characteristics from different characters I like as well (for Kaori Edward from FMA really helped inspire me).

For Akua, I kinda struggled with her overall. I ended up starting with a giant koi fish as a summoning animal, and then just kinda went from there! She’s a lot more laid back and go with the flow~ it took me FOREVER to decide on a hair color for her lol! But I like the sea foam green. Her main outfit and build is inspired by professional swimmers and divers, as well as taking some cues from shinobi from the hidden mist village.

Chihiro is harder to pin down cuz I made her originally when I was in elementary school, but I did give her an outfit redesign in 2020! For her Shippuden outfit, I mixed white and red as kind of a reference to her family’s high status and her Fire nature.

When I’m picking out colors and outfit designs, I try to reference what canon characters wear a bit. But I also really like to reference real outfits and they can help with colors too!! I typically try to pick a color that compliments the character’s personality or interests, and then harmonize colors. But I also like to add in complimentary colors for a nice pop and to help draw the eye.

This was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be LOL but I hope I at least kinda answered your question!!

Thank you! And to be honest, I’m not completely sure. but I think I have two main pieces of advice I could give.

The first is figure out your concepts/references and the second is don’t be discouraged by a first attempt that doesn’t turn out that good.

(This ended up a lot longer than I thought it’d be, sorry it’s so long. This is my first time making a tutorial thing so I hope it helps! More under the readmore)

To start, I’ll use Shattered Future Randall and Claire as examples:

With Randall, there was a collection of concepts which came from Randall himself, the masked gentleman and the mask of chaos. To list them, there’s bird (from the gentleman), lion (from Randall’s floofy hair) and the sun/moon/stars (the mask).

The lion and bird related concepts are easy to see in the design, but the sun moon and stars come into play with the mask’s horns. The mask itself has the five horn-like things, so I used those to crate the sun/moon/star horns.

At the top is the sun, then the second set is the moon (a crescent when viewed from front on) and the lowest set is the stars.

Then there’s Claire. She admittedly had less to work with, but I also had the need for the spectre which helped. She also has a big tie to time, which is shown through the Roman numerals, the clock hand antennae and the snake (ouroboros).

She also had the connection to fire through her death, which is why she has the furnace-like mouth.

Gathering concepts is the starting point for your creature. It helps to look up which animals or symbols represent what, and I’d recommend looking up different mythical creatures for inspiration.

Admittedly, these two were more concept than reference related, so for the reference example, I’ll use the centaur au.

For these, I looked up multiple pictures of the creatures I used on Google and on tumblr. The biggest example of this is Hershel’s wings, which are based off of an inverted picture of a blue jay (with a few adjustments)

I did this because Luke and the Professor colours are already (not perfectly) inverted (Luke has white, blue and green, the Professor has ‘black’ orange and red).

Luke’s main bunny body also took a lot of references, bunnies are surprisingly hard to draw lol.

Then there’s the second point I mentioned: don’t be discouraged by a first attempt that doesn’t turn out that good.

For the example, here’s some concept art for Shattered future Randall and Claire

You see, they didn’t quite start out too good (especially Claire lol). Claire’s face shape didn’t appear until the third or fourth time I drew her, and Randall’s horns weren’t worked out until I drew them for the silhouette.

Randall didn’t even have paws in his first design, and Claire’s numeral spine used to just be firey.

When drawing your own creatures, try out different things. You don’t like a certain part? Draw it differently as many times as you need to and if it still doesn’t work, then just remove it or replace it with something else.

Redraw the whole thing if you want to, but each time you draw it you’ll get closer to what you want.

This ended up a bit rambley, I’m not sure if any of this really makes sense but I hope it helps!

Hi anon! Sorry this took a bit longer. I started to reply and then tumblr ate it and then the rest of that day and yesterday were not effective-communication days LMAO bees in the head...

3. What ideas come from when you were little

So I used to get in trouble for drawing gay smooching and gnc folks pretty often between 10 and 15 years old and then I just stopped showing people what I was drawing LOL But that's definitely an 'idea' that came from when I was little.

(Does anyone else remember that scanner software where you could colour on an image you'd just scanned into your computer with your mouse? circa 2002ish?)

Though I believe as human beings we are capable of change, and making very radically different changes... this hasn't changed at all for me LOL Also I guess a fascination with angels but I'll blame that on the baptism.

5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself

It used to be most of it but I'm definitely weaning that down for illustrations that depict my own intellectual property. I like to share things that I like with other people so it's difficult.

However, I've had correspondences with Tumblr's @support that have been less than reassuring as far as their willingness and/or ability (it wasn't explained to me) to help independant artists protect their work from being profited off by thieving spamdexxing sites like tumgir and other tumblr knockoffs. They were readier to look at and remove my own work from this platform than shake their fist at sites that steal the content hereon. I fully intend on publishing original work sometime in this lifetime, so it's important to me to take steps that protect my rights as a creator.

Nobody else is gonna do that for me. I checked. And my own resources are just too slim for that either. Though in Canada my intellectual property rights are theoretically ineffable, in practice that's not the case.

If that means I have to hold my cards close to my vest until a time comes where I can publish my work, I'll do my best to do that.

That said that's all for my own IPs. When it comes to things I don't hold the rights to, those get thrown up, and will continue to be uploaded, about 95% of the time! :D I have more content for fics that haven't gone up than fanart haha TBH the other 5% there is just wips that I don't feel are ready to go up yet. But if I give up I usually upload them anyway LMAO

I think this one has been up before but it took a long time to get up because there's a lot of work that needs to be done here rofl And Aiura deserves that uwu

Hi hello yes friend! <3 I am fairly certain this is another bit from LTL, but let me check...

OH NO. Ohhhhh this is from a VERY OLD version of the bathtub scene (still Remus POV!), before I ended up reworking a bunch of things. I'll note what changed under a cut, but uh. Here is a small, inoffensive snippet of this one lol

"I can't believe you did this." Dora snorted, squirting different coloured dyes into several small bowls. They'd broken out the good china for this exercise, he'd noticed. "I absolutely can." Sirius sighed dramatically, and Remus was beginning to suspect he'd somehow switched consciousness with his fifth-year self. "I just fancied a change." "Then paint some walls or something, you prat, not…" He trailed off, gesturing vaguely at Sirius' hair, which truly looked horrid. "Eugh, look, no offence, cariad, blond is not your colour." "You don't think it makes me look like my cousin? My dear old mother used to say we had the same cheekbones." He pursed his lips, tapping his cheek with his index finger. He did have lovely cheekbones, but that was rather beside the point. "Probably why she tried to marry me off to her, come to think of it." "Cissy had actual colour to her hair. This is… erm…" "White?" Dora supplied, grinning as though she weren't at least partially responsible. "Well, that's a word for it, isn’t it? Thank you Dora." Sirius scowled; the effect was rather ruined by how ridiculous he looked. Don't laugh, Lupin, you'll just get him all het up again. Whatever made him happy, right?

Right. "I’m never staying blond, ta very much." Dora winked at Remus, then grabbed Sirius' head firmly and turned him so he was looking straight down into his lap. "Too right you're not, now sit still so I can apply this."

OK, so if you want to see the changes...

This was the version where Remus ALSO sat down and let Dora dye his hair (he no longer does this.) Fun fact: this is what my PFP is from lol. I'm still a little sad I lost that bit, but. Oh well. It really wasn't that important.

The hearing never happened in this version, so Sirius was still trying to figure out a legal way to clear his name rather than Remus flinging himself at the situation like an angry cat.

The whole borderline alcoholism angle with Sirius was not addressed yet like it has been in LTL-canon, and the problem was going to be a lot worse. I decided to walk it back a little because he didn't really get the chance to full-on spiral down that particular well like he did in actual-canon.

This version takes place the same night the Weasley kids + Harry show up at Grimmauld Place. I pushed it up earlier in the month instead because it was WAY too messy and honestly I didn't want to put a bunch of anxious teens in the same house as a couple of inebriated adults. As I was writing it out, the discomfort overrode any comic value.

Sirius got to be The Adult In The Room, which... I ended up reworking as a concept into some better/healthier moments, since it's important for his character arc.

The discussion between Remus and Dora re: his past addiction issues was originally going to happen here, and Remus was also going to mentally draw parallels between his past and Sirius' current struggles. I felt it was a little too on the nose.

I had been laying the groundwork for actual UST between Dora and Sirius here, which no longer strictly lines up with where they're headed in LTL.

There was a photograph of Remus with green hair. I will be working this into LTL canon SOMEWHERE, or so help me XD

Remus took paint thinner to Walburga's portrait, and Dora drew a dick on her with a sharpie which she couldn't scream about, owing to no longer having a mouth. While the scene is hilarious, I could not in good conscience keep this as is, and the writing in the dialogue is so genuinely terrible I want to cry lol. (Not like the words they're saying are bad, just I was still in the "need to write the way they sound" mode, and it just isn't a good look, it's going back in the hole forever.)

There's probably some other changes here but yeah, just generally tone and trajectory and pacing and plot alllllll changed from where this was at initially lol.

Ahhhhhh i wish there were some talented people in the yowapeda fandom who'd colour manga panels

#i always see coloured panels from haikyuu or bnha #and they're so amazing and beautiful #and i wish someone would do that with yowapeda #yowamushi pedal #yowapeda #bc there are some panels that i think would look beautiful in colour #but its not like i can do it myself #it would take me longer to learn colouring than it took me yo learn basic japanese #so nope i def cant do that myself #but just so you know i'm very tempted to learn drawing and colouring just yo make yowapeda content #and then I'll officially become a one-man-fandom LOL

uugugugugu even though I said I wouldn’t take so long on the next update... it’s been almost four months !!! I’m so sorry!! While I did draw a couple of one-shots during this time as distractions I will admit that I really struggled drawing this too... But!! I’m not going to sulk! I can do that in private. Let’s talk about the one thing on everyone’s minds:

This is why Sasuke isn’t purple.

In all seriousness I just thought it’d be funny if he were a realistic snake, and it’s when he’s “cutie-fied” in someone’s mind that he becomes purple and round.

I bet once Shioriko starts getting closer with Ayumu, she might blink one day and notice that Sasuke’s become purple LMAO

Next question:

YEAH I really went and did that in this story. Yes I’ve been on this 18 month journey fully knowing I was going to do this to my favourite character! Do I feel bad? Ehh... maybe a little! I hope I was able to pull this part of the story off. I don’t feel particularly confident about it. Just know that I did try my hardest to make this feel genuine.

Man, I hope people don’t get mad at me ahahahaha. I’d talk more about this but I feel that’d be tapping into spoiler territory. Maybe I’ll save it for a discussion when this series finishes.

As trivia, I had this planned since the beginning. Back when Yuu Takasaki didn’t have a name and we didn’t really know what her personality was going to be like. I just think it’s interesting that this scene kind of formed along side my understanding of Yuu as a character.

But yes, I did struggle making this comic. It’s the longest yet, sitting at 27 pages. Somehow I keep making these longer and longer (and I’m certain it’s not necessary, but I can reflect on that in my art review for 2021.) I also had a hard time figuring out the lighting, I think I must’ve tried 3-4 different approaches to the same mood. It took a looonng while to settle on a colouring strategy for this comic. I hope the outcome is pleasing to look at!

It’s really hard to talk about this comic without going deep into the story... but I will resist...!! I guess the last thing I want to talk about is that there are numerous references to the earlier comics in this series. I had a lot of fun mirroring previous scenes and having little easter eggs. If you’re able to pick them out it’d make me really happy!

(I wonder if anyone noticed this throwback LOL)

I hope you all can forgive me for not including Setsuna in this update, by the way. Especially with how she kind of took a backseat last update too. This part is just Ayumu-centric. Setsuna will get her time to shine very soon!

Anyhow, now Ayumu’s come clean and and her worries are a lot less cluttered than they used to be. It’s a lot easier to think when you work through your problems step-by-step!

There’s one final loose thread to deal with and I think we all know what that is. Only one chapter left in this story, please look forward to it!

Pro Hero Dabi AU

(because I think there should be more Pro Hero Dabis where he still has his scars)

More facts...

Timeline

He still has his incident at Sekoto, but instead of escaping(?) Endeavour finds him and took him to the hospital

Still ends up with burns no matter how many healing quirks they try and eventually he just accepts it

Endeavour still refuses to train Touya because "obviously he can't handle himself"

Like, he's happy Touya is alive, but he would have hoped this would be the push Touya needed to give up on his dream once and for all

Touya's like "lol ok, screw you" and applied to UA without Endeavour knowing until it was too late

Endeavour is pissed that Touya would do something so reckless but he technically can't do anything, so he chooses to simply ignore it and focus on training Shoto

It isn't until Touya is in his 3rd year (when he gets 1st place in the Sports Festival) that Endeavour is like "hmm maybe I should be paying attention to my other kid"

Touya's super excited about the sudden attention but it his common sense kicks in pretty quickly. This doesn't make up for the years of ignoring him, and Endeavour isn't really trying to "atone" as much as he is "trying to take credit for Touya's sudden fame"

Touya eventually graduates and Endeavour offers him a job as a sidekick DURING THE CEREMONY

Touya can't say no (literally, it would tank his career before it even got started) so he agrees

He sidekicks for a year before starting his own agency

His goal is no longer to be better than All Might (he lost that dream a long time ago) it's to stick it to his dad by being a beloved hero who is more well-liked than Endeavour

He starts by putting on an act of being super nice and friendly but through this he actually BECOMES super nice and friendly

In his quest to annoy Endeavour, Touya is currently threatening to take Shoto once he graduates so they can run a sibling agency together

Shoto is 100% on board, he thinks Touya is so cool

Costume Design

His suit is designed to release excess fire in order to keep his body cool. He had the designers make the "vents" release flames, similar to Endeavour's costume (he's pissed at Enji, but he has to admit he likes his costume)

The "vents" follow the patterns of his scars because his scarred skin is at greater risk of spontaneously combusting. This helps channel the flames out in a safe, manageable way

The inside of his suit is also designed to cool his skin. It's a really soft material so it doesn't irritate his staples

He used to wear a mask as a student/sidekick because he didn't want people to be scared of him. He doesn't wear it as much now, but if he's working with kids he'll generally bring it along

He chose his colour scheme based on his hair and eye colour. It was only afterwards when he realized he kind of looked like an ice hero (aside from the flames)

Family

Natsuo is so proud of his big bro and brags about him CONSTANTLY

"My brother is Dabi!" "Oh, cool! Wait, wouldn't that mean your father is Endeavour?" "... like I said, my brother is Dabi"

Shoto made Touya "his first piece of fan art" upon his UA graduation. Touya keeps it framed in his office

Shoto also forgot to draw his own scar haha kids are so forgetful lol I totally did that intentionally

Fuyumi once brought her class to Touya's agency for a field trip and they were SO HAPPY

They wrote thank you cards once they got back to school and Fuyumi gave them to him. He put them up in the lobby and took a selfie with the display, then sent the photo back to Fuyumi to show the kids

Lucifer

• At first he was ?? just clean it off ?? or be neater ??

• But once he watched you work one afternoon he understood

• And also realized how cute it was

• The paint and smudges on your arms (and hair? He had no idea how you’d managed to get paint in your hair, but after watching he understood heh) was just as much part of the artwork as the actual piece itself

• The more he sees you with little (or big) paint smudges on your face and arms, the more he loves it

Mammon

• “MC! Ya got paint on yerself!”

• You explain that you know and that you liked it there. It makes you feel artsy

• He doesn't completely understand, but he’s not about to judge you for it

• Walks into your room to hand out and sees you with green and blue paint all over your arms, and watches you intently (while asking many questions) to see just how you manage to always end up covered in whatever medium you were using

Leviathan

• He sometimes makes art of his favorite fandoms (except Ruri-chan. Because she belongs to him <3) to sell, so he understands how much of a messy process it can be

• But he switched to drawing on a tablet hundreds of years ago, so he forgets the extent to which you can get dirty

• You stop by one afternoon to watch anime and have a strand of green paint through your hair

• He blushes and giggles a bit at the sight, and compliments you on your new hair

• He draws sometimes so he’s used to the smudges, but is shocked that you manage to get paint on essentially every surface of your body

• At first he’s upset, but he can never stay mad at you for longer than a second, so he wipes it off across your cheek

Asmodeus

• “That can’t be good for your skin!”

• Whenever you head over and are covered in your art (so every time) he draws you a bath and gives you his most hydrating and moisturizing body wash he has

• Sits beside you (or in the tub with you, whatever you’re comfortable with) and lectures you on how bad acrylic paint is for your skin

• You try to tell him it’s fine and that it’s never affected you before, but he will not hear it

• You appreciate his care for your skin and wellbeing and gladly let him pamper you

Beelzebub

• Doesn’t notice at first, but one day when he sees you with a large orange mark on your jeans, he notices

• Asks what happened, and you explain that you were painting a piece you’d finally finished sketching and accidentally gotten the paint on your pants

• Asks to watch you draw sometime (he’s interested because you’re interested)

• Likes to pick at the paint on your arms while you’re working, weirdly satisfied by the way it comes off in little flakes

• You notice this and start getting more paint on your arms so that he can pick it off later

Belphegor

• Notices when he’s falling asleep with his face in your hair and gets a big whiff of paint

• “Uh, MC, there’s paint in your hair”

• “Oh yeah, I know. It’s dried now so it won’t stain anything”

• He doesn’t mind any potential stains, really just misses the smell of your hair as he falls asleep

• You make sure to tie your hair back so his naps are as enjoyable as possible

Diavolo

• He’s always very neat and orderly, so when you show up in messy ripped jeans and a loose tee-shirt, he’s surprised

• “MC, you’re covered in paint!” he notices, but definitely thinks it’s cute

• “Yeah, I guess I am” you laugh, looking down at yourself, “I just finished a piece and it had a ~ton~ of colors involved”

• He thinks it’s cute and asks you for a piece just for him

• Definitely not to hang in his office, to look at when he misses you

• Buys you a smock to wear while you paint, but you wear it more as a cardigan (and spray his cologne on it)

Barbatos

• He likes abstract paintings and even creates them in his (limited) free time

• So when you show up covered in an array of paints, he loves that this is something you can share

• You buy each other sketchbooks and fill them with little drawings/paintings of things that make you think of each other

• It’s very cute and he frames his favorites from you, hanging them around his room to look at

• Brags to his friends (mainly Diavolo) about how talented you are

Simeon

• Loves art !

• He’s never created it, but he loves the liberal arts, so he loves that you create such beautiful art

• Loves to watch you sketch (specifically the way you could create such intricate drawings from a blank page) and paint (the way you could take three colors and create a masterpiece, blending the colors to create a new rainbow)

• He encourages you to enter your work in competitions, and you end up making quite a name for yourself

• Supportive :’)

Solomon

• Only experience with art was the few art classes he took in the human world

• Upon finding out that you’re an artist (you insist it’s just a hobby, but he knows that your talent is undeniable)

• Thinks the way you’re always covered in paint and smudges is adorable, and likes to tease you about it

• You want to paint all over his hair since it’s white like your canvases, but you settle for drawing silhouettes of him to design his hair in many ways

• You ~almost~ get him to dye his hair like one of your designs, but he has too many formal events to go to for his work

Luke

• “MC! I didn’t know you were into painting!”

• You show him some of your work, and his eyes light up like a puppy (I had to hjgdks)

• “You’re amazing!” he compliments you, and usually doesn’t pay mind to the paint all over your clothes and skin

My Thoughts on the New MHA Opening and Ending

I have thoughts, and I will share them because oh boy if I don’t get this out I’m gonna explode

Vague Spoilers for the manga (up to chapter 258 and vigilantes) because I discuss the upcoming arcs, but I don’t discuss any major plot points in detail. Still, proceed with caution if you’re anime only

Keep in mind, this OP and ED will cover the Endeavour Agency Arc and the MVA Arc, so I will be judging them accordingly.

First, the OP

This is a good OP... in theory (that’s going to become my catchphrase for this post). It’s nice to look at and flows pretty well, but my biggest problem is that it doesn’t do it’s job. An OP is supposed to be a sort of... summary (?) of the Cour it plays for. That means any cool plot points, emotional beats, and important characters should be featured in some way, shape, or form. We’ll talk about that more later, but first let’s discuss the music.

The song is really good. I have a feeling it will continue to grow on me as I listen to it more often, but yeah my first impression is that the song sounds great. My only complaint about the music itself is that it ends kind of abruptly (I noticed this is the JT opening too). The previous openings used to have a bit of instrumental to “play us out” and lead us to the end card, but this one feels like it ends very suddenly and unnaturally.

As for the visuals...

Yeah alright I’ll admit, the visuals are stunning... in theory. I appreciate the variety in backgrounds and colours, it makes the OP really interesting to look at. This was actually one of my biggest problems with the JT Opening, it all took place on the training grounds, so there was no variety (everything was metal tubes with a blue sky, with only 3 shots set somewhere different). I appreciate the style of this OP.

But like I said, that’s only in theory, as in, through screenshots these are all pleasing to look at. The pacing of this OP is wild, and I truly don’t know who to blame for this.

That sunset shot above? It lasts approximately 12 seconds, zooming in every few to make it seem like something is happening (when in reality it’s still the same poses, angles, etc). While there’s nothing wrong with a nice, drawn out shot, it becomes irritating when compared to the pacing of the rest of this op.

At the 41 second mark, we are given the shot above. It has flowed directly from the previous sunset scene. We still have not moved away from the image of the trio (aside from the opening shot and the title card) yet we’re approaching the halfway mark of the OP.

The next shot is the MLA, which lasts about 5 seconds. Ok, perfect. Not too long, but also not short enough to be confusing. It cuts away a little fast once the dude on the far left appears, but does anyone actually know who that is? No, seriously, I’m asking. I don’t remember his name and he’s not on the wiki, so I can only assume he’s not important. Therefore, it’s not all that bad if the shot cuts away shortly after he comes into frame. The audience is able to take in the scene without having to pause...

... And then the problems start

While this shot is fine in theory, it pans up fast and cuts away quickly. You know how hard it was for me to get this screenshot? Really hard. You want to know why I struggled so much? Because, due to the timing of the cut and the way it pans upwards, it’s almost impossible to pause on Dabi’s face. I literally had to go frame by frame to get it, because he’s in shot for so little time that naturally pausing is guaranteed to miss him.

When watching this in real time (without pausing) the cut away makes you feel as if you missed something because “something was there, I just couldn’t register what because now it’s gone”. Unlike Compress, who wears a very colourful coat you can recognize the entire time, Dabi’s pants are more blended into the background.

It also doesn’t help that this shot is literally composed to draw your attention away from Dabi until the last possible second. Due to framing, your eye is naturally drawn to the brightly coloured Toga in the foreground, making it super easy to miss Dabi in the back (until, of course, his bright face appears and contrasts against the background, drawing your eye just in time for the scene to change, leaving you to wonder who or what you missed).

I know this sounds like nitpicking, but this shot is the only group shot we get of the League, and is also the start of a seriously weird trend for the villains in this OP getting the short end of the stick.

Anyways, then we get what I’ll call “The Carousel Shot” in which every Class 1A kid shows up and poses dramatically, as if they were on a carousel. It’s a lovely sequence and I really enjoy watching it but... why is it in this OP?

Seriously, this is a genuine question. Class 1A barely shows up in the Endeavour Agency Arc, and NONE of the students are in MVA. This sequence (not counting the three boys at the end) lasts 8 seconds. Why is this much time dedicated to characters who are barely in the arc? (Unless Studio Bones extends their work studies into fuller plot lines which oh my gosh please don’t do that, or if they do, do it quick).

We then get what I call the “Oh God I Blinked And Missed Everything” sequence, which lasts 3 seconds (not including the longer, moving shot of Shigaraki at the end) and features NINE INDIVIDUAL IMAGES, none of which are related to each other. Not only is this 3 images per second, but the fact that they are all unrelated means you can’t even use previous information to fill in the blanks.

What do I mean by that? Well, imagine if I show you 9 images of various pro heroes posing. If I play that in 3 seconds you’ll absolutely miss some of them, but as long as you catch some you’ll still get an idea of what I’m trying to show to you. Your brain is able to fill in the gaps that “I recognized 4 pro heroes, therefore the rest must have also been pros” even if you didn’t register every single frame.

That doesn’t work if every frame features a completely different subject. The shots in this sequence vary so widely that it’s impossible to find a through line. Some feature multiple characters, some feature one, some are closeups, some are super far away, some are character’s we know, others are characters we don’t. It’s impossible to get a solid read on what you’re being shown.

Now, again, there’s nothing wrong with these super quick shots... in theory. The problem comes from the fact that these shots are the only indicators for some of the major themes that will be explored during this Cour (like Twice’s growth and young Shigaraki).

That being said, let’s move away from criticism and talk about speculation, because hidden amongst this sequence are two... interesting images.

This All Might one is very reminiscent of the shot in Chapter 257, where Aizawa and All Might have a conversation while staring up at the stars. However, this is technically the start of the “War Arc” (or the “prologue”, if that’s what you want to call it), so this might indicate that we’re going to get farther into the series than a lot of us guessed.

(Many people suspected we’d get to that cliffhanger at the start of the season (if you read the manga you know the one), but after seeing the pacing for JT a lot of us assumed we’d be lucky to even finish Endeavour Agency. It seems we’re back to the cliffhanger now though lol).

This is another really interesting shot because it’s indicative of Shirakumo, meaning we might get to see Aizawa and Mic confront him some time this Cour (this also makes sense, since this confrontation technically happens before that All Might scene I mentioned in the previous paragraph).

But the cat specifically is a really strange addition. That cat is named Sushi and, correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Sushi is ever mentioned in the main series. I think he’s only in Vigilantes.

This might just be a little Easter Egg for Vigilante readers, but I’m personally hoping that they’ll add at least a few Vigilante shots in there to really tug at the heart strings. I’d say I want a whole Vigilante episode but I don’t think they have the time (unless they really cram MVA, which I do NOT want).

I don’t have much to say about the last bit of the OP. The action shot between the 3 boys was nice, and it follows the sort of narrative through line they established from the early shot of them sitting at the sunset. I also like the shot of Endeavour fading in to replace All Might, even if it’s very simple.

But I want to talk about an overarching problem I touched upon earlier in that villain shot: the way the villains are handled in this OP.

This is a good OP... in theory. The problem is, it doesn’t represent half the arcs in the cour! Every shot of the League is so rushed that you can barely register that they were on screen before they’re gone.

I have no idea how many Episodes Endeavour Agency will take, but I’d assume 3 (4 if you count the Christmas episode). 12 episodes for this Cour minus 3 for Endeavour Agency = 9 episodes left. If we truly do get the prologue for the War Arc (and if we assume it’s only 1 episode) that leaves us with 8 villains episodes.

8/12 episodes (aka two thirds of the Cour) will likely be about the villains. And yet they’re pushed to the background so hard in this OP.

I want to dream, and I want to believe that this OP is going to magically change when MVA starts. The song fits super well, and I can imagine like an inversion of the OP but from the Villain side! Wouldn’t that be neat? Imagine right after the “it’s alright” part Shigaraki just freaking decays the title card... oh man that would be so cool. But, alas, I highly doubt they’d do that.

Side rant, but you know what was so fun about MVA in the manga? It’s that, for 21 chapters, we leave the kids behind and the villains become our protagonists. Suddenly Shigaraki is the one we’re rooting for, suddenly we’re learning backstories for everyone, and suddenly we find ourselves just as attached to the villains as we are to the kids. It’s an inversion that’s SO RARE to find, and I think many people (myself included) were hoping it would be reflected in the OP.

A big part of being the protagonist means featuring heavily in the OP, and a lot of us just wanted the villains to get that honour, even if only once. As is, the OP still treats them as the antagonists when... really they aren’t. Not right now, at least.

So yeah, final thoughts on the OP are that it’s good, it’s just not very representative of the arcs it’s supposed to cover. If this was just for Endeavour Agency, I’d say it’s actually really cool, but if we assume that this is what will play for the Villain Arc, then it simply doesn’t do it’s job. And it makes me sad to say that because, again, this OP is really well done.

If I had to rate it? Hmmm

If Studio Bones actually grants my wish and creates a different visual for the Villain Arc (while using the same song) and then this version only plays for the Endeavour Agency Arc and the War Prologue? I’d give it an 8/10. It’s really good, but it could use a few more elements that are clearly derived from the Agency Arc (ahem, Todoroki siblings).

But if this is the OP that will play for the entire Cour? a 6.5/10. It’s nice, but it’s not representative of one of the arcs it’s going to cover. And, unlike other arcs like Pro Hero or Summer Exams, the villain Arc is so important and takes up so much time that it honestly feels like a bit of a disservice.

Now for the Ending

I want to say that I appreciate how soft this ending starts. This cour will likely feature a lot of episodes that end on... heavier themes, and I think the sight of peaceful, falling raindrops is the perfect way to let the audience process their emotions before starting the ending in earnest.

The song itself is very nice, and I like that it’s a bit slower than the more recent endings.

(Side note, but the FUNNIEST moment in the entire series is when Sir Nighteye dies because it’s so emotional and everyone is standing around his bed in his heartwrentching silence, only for the ending to come BLARING IN out of no where. If you forgot how jarringly hilarious it was, go listen to the Eri ending and tell me that’s not the funniest thing this series ever did. Anyways yeah I’m glad that’s not gonna happen this Cour).

This ending is a bit all over the place in terms of it’s visuals, but honestly I think it works. Most endings usually have a theme tying them together (all the Class 1A girls, a fantasy AU, old photographs, planning a party, etc) but this ending’s theme is a bit harder to identify.

That being said, I think it’s just supposed to show everyone going about their day. It’s calm, it’s peaceful, and it’s just very sweet to think about

I like this shot. Actually, scratch that, I like this whole sequence. I enjoy anything that allows Class 1A to chill and have fun.

Hawks is featured quite heavily in this ending which, fair. He’s pretty important in this arc.

I really love the shot where Endeavour immediately switches to Hawks, I thought that was a lot of fun, and very good symbolism on how Hawks wants to be like Endeavour. I also love all the shots of Baby Hawks, because it’s adorable.

Something about this shot is just so cute. It’s the little domestic things like waiting for a bus that make this ending feel... idk the word, real? It shows a side of the characters that we’ll never see in the episodes, but we know have to exist.

Like yes, of course the kids have to wait for the bus. We never see it, but of course there are those moments of quiet. Agh, I love it.

The villains also make an appearance and I’m very happy about that (I’d love to see more of the villains just chilling around, I think they deserve it). I kind of wish they weren’t sitting in a dark room for the sake of being edgy, since I think it would be nice to see the villains just... sort of existing, but honestly it’s still a nice shot. I also like how this shot sort of mirrors the first one with Class 1A (someone coming in while everyone else is sitting and waiting for them).

That being said, as much as I love looking at Dabi and his stupid face (affectionate)... why is Dabi the one getting the closeup?

Mind you, endings don’t need to be connected to their Cours (they can be, like the Eri one, but they don’t have to be). But this ending does seem to be connected to the arcs it intends to cover, given all the Hawks appearances, the boys wearing their work study scarves, etc.

So, I ask again, why Dabi? Out of the six League members, we learn the backstory for four of them in this arc (Shigaraki, Toga, Twice, and we very briefly learn about Spinner). The only two left out are Dabi and Compress.

I can only assume they chose Dabi because he’s constantly in contact with Hawks, and therefore that makes him important? If the OP told us anything, it’s that Bones values the Endeavour Agency Arc over the Villain Arc lol...

... Oh my gosh please tell me that’s not actually the reason Dabi is focused on here BONES WAI-

Anyways, the ending comes to a close with Hawks watching over the kids and Endeavour. The relaxing time is done, it’s time for work studies.

Overall impression? It’s great. It’s hard to screw up an ending, so as long as you have something pretty on screen, it’s wonderful.

I’ll give this a 9/10
