Timid Yuuri? I Think Not!
I can’t tell if this is an unpopular opinion or not, because even 6+ years later, the Yuri on Ice fandom is rich and wonderful. It’s a fandom where there seems to be something for everyone.
But one thing I do see a lot of, and at least if @rikeijo‘s takes are correct (and given her translations, I believe them), there is a rabid subset of YOI that firmly stand in the uke!Yuuri and seme!Victor camp, to such a degree that there was backlash about seeing long-haired young Victor because it did not fit the mold of perfect masculine boyfriend assertive Victor and soft feminine timid Yuuri.
Which... <points to canon> Yuuri has something to say about that.
When we first meet Yuuri, he’s a ball of anxiety and self-doubt. He’s had a horrific debut at the GPF, and his dog has died.
Yet, his first encounter with Victor Nikiforov, his idol, is him turning away from an offer of a commemorative photo. Turning down and walking away are already not behaviors of someone who is timid. Ashamed and depressed that his idol didn’t even seem to recognize him as a competitor? Yes. Timid and uke? Nope.
I often wonder if the timidity idea came from the other first encounter, yes, that one. Naked-and-confident Victor in the onsen declaring himself Yuuri’s coach. Yuuri shell-shocked and overly accommodating. On top of that, Yuuri lets Yurio bulldoze him, lets Victor set the terms of the Onsen on Ice, and goes along with it all with nary a complaint.
At least at the beginning, we know Yuuri thinks of Victor as a god. We see him do a dogeza for being late, see him flustered with the touch and attention that Victor gives him, see the way his face goes moony each time Victor speaks.
And then... as Victor is telling Yuuri to remember sometime how it felt being with a lover, Yuuri reacted like this:
Yup. That is the face he made as he shouted “huh?!” at Victor, before he came back to himself and apologized profusely. That “huh?!” is not timid.
Personally, I think this Yuuri, the “huh?!” Yuuri is the real one, sliding behind the mask of deference because his idol is coaching him, scared that Victor might lose interest and abandon him.
And from that “huh?!” moment onward, we get more and more of the real Yuuri.
We get eye rolls when Victor changes into a suit for the regional competition.
We get full on insubordination when Victor says to cut some of his quads.
We get battle-mode Yuuri letting Victor apply his lip balm.
And it all goes downhill from there.
In Beijing, Yuuri scolded Victor for interrupting his interview to talk food. He refused the food that would turn his stomach (as well as the alcohol), and finally... when Victor totally fumbled on coaching Yuuri through his panic attack, Yuuri... unleashed.
(gif source here)
You know who acted like the experienced and assertive one after this conversation? I’ll give you one hint. It wasn’t Victor.
Yes, Victor absolutely was the one who initiated that kiss.
But even Yuuri’s reaction to it (after the initial shock of kissing Victor on live TV) was “oh!”
Yet, these moments are not even the cream of the crop. There is one moment that stands above them all. Yes, I am referring to the tie.
Victor is hamming it up for the audience in Russia. He is not paying all of his attention to Yuuri. Yuuri takes issue with this.
There is nothing timid or uke about that tie tug.
That is the type of tie tug that awakened something in Victor Nikiforov (if it had not already been awakened by his gorgeous chaos goblin boyfriend already.)
This is not to say that Yuuri has no shy and tender moments, he absolutely does. This is not to say that Victor is actually the uke, he absolutely is not.
This is just to say that the thing about Yuuri and Victor that make them compelling and wonderful is that they cannot be fit into obvious little boxes like uke and seme.
It’s what is so wonderful about Victor and Yuuri. That we can imagine them in whatever configuration we want to, and it works!
It means that I cannot wait for Ice Adolescence, with that soft and sweet Victor. Because Yuuri Katsuki was not an uke seeking a seme, he was nuanced and confident and sweet and chaotic, and absolutely perfect for Victor Nikiforov.

ooh, I am torn between "untitled document" and "reverseAU". Please pick one for me!
I only included untitled document because it's funny to me, so it's good you chose two.
This is the whole of untitled document. To this day I have no idea what it is.
'reverse AU' was a classic Yuri on Ice prompt that was essentially just a role reversal of canon. I really liked the way my idea played out, but I sadly never got around to finishing it.
Anyway it's a good chunk of words, and I'm pretty certain I'll never finish, so I'll just put it behind a read more. Yuri on Ice fans come get your food.
-------------------------------
Victor had slipped in after public ice time was over, after the last of the beginner skating lessons were done for the day, and kindly asked Yuuko Nishigori, the young woman who worked at the rink, if he could have some private ice time.
He was surprised when she recognized him, professing that it’s not every day a world-famous figure skater came into their rink out of the blue and asked to skate. Victor didn’t think he was particularly world famous, but he supposed, if you were a skating fan already, he might be recognizable.
“You can use the rink while we’re closing up. That should give you about forty-five minutes? If you want more ice time than that, you’ll have to schedule it with us and pay for it in advance.”
Victor nodded, pleased that the woman spoke English well, because he didn’t know more than the most basic of Japanese.
He was still feeling the effects of jet lag, so once he’d laced up his skates he spent a good ten or so minutes just skating around the rink, orienting himself with the setting and breathing in the crisp cool air of a rink well loved.
And then, he began to skate. It was a program he knew down to his very bones, better than his own programs from that year, which to be honest, considering his last experience in competition, he’d rather forget anyway.
When Yuuri Katsuki skated, it was like he made music with his body. Victor thought that, even if he went out there and skated a program with no music playing, it would hardly make a difference, would hardly diminish its beauty. Yuuri was the music itself; it flowed through him and was expelled from his fingertips, from the silver of his blades flashing and gliding across the ice.
It took Victor’s breath away, but he hardly cared. Even if Victor could no longer breathe, he was sure he could survive on Yuuri’s skating alone; on the serenity of his smile, on the grace and poise he moved with.
If Victor could skate like that, if he could skate even half as well as that, he would be happy. If he could stand on the podium with Yuuri Katsuki, know that Yuuri had watched him skate, had been impressed by it, then it would have all been worth it; the pain in his leg that occasionally still ached to this day, the years of recovery from an injury that could easily have been career ending, the biting commentary and the cynicism the media had had about him; ‘just give up, Victor Nikiforov is over’ for season upon season. The Russian skating federation would rather be done with him, he knew it. There were new stars on the rise; junior world champion Yuri Plisetsky for one. And even Georgi Popovich, his longtime rink mate, had managed a top six finish at worlds in Victor’s absence just days before.
There was no music as he began the program; Yuuri’s program, the one he’d just won his fifth world title with, his fifth grand prix final gold medal. It was the program that Victor skated every single day because he loved skating, and this was the one thing that could remind him of it.
He heard the piano in his head as he skated, listening to the sound of his blades across fresh ice, allowing it to soothe him as he ran through the elements of this ridiculously difficult program that he loved so much. His jumps were coming easily, and he breathed a sigh of relief at that. The tiny amount of pain in his leg, he knew, was because it was still stiff from the plane ride.
Victor knew that even at his best, he lacked Yuuri’s grace. He’d been told growing up, back when he was fresh from his second junior world title, back when he was on the trajectory to shake up the senior world, that he was an excellent all-around skater. But Yuuri, Yuuri was art. It could have been his ballet background, but Victor had known other skaters with a similar background, and none of them moved like Yuuri.
He let the imaginary music carry him through the second half of the program, making the decision to downgrade a quadruple loop into a triple (he’d never managed to master that jump), and closed his eyes as he launched into the step sequence, the element Yuuri was most famous for and the thing Victor was least confident in. It was almost too much for him, Yuuri moved quick as lightning during this part and Victor thought that perhaps, if the music were playing, he may have fallen behind. But…
The last jump was a quadruple flip, and Victor was still amazed at how Yuuri put it at the end of his program, but laboriously, because he was tired, and he was feeling the burn in his chest and his legs, he launched into it, landing it cleanly and with a flourish.
He ended the program, his hand over his chest and his other arm reaching out toward the edge
of the rink.
For a moment, he closed his eyes, imagining applause, imagining that he’d successfully skated a clean program in competition, and one as difficult as this.
When he opened them, there was no applause, but there was an audience.
Yuuri Katsuki stood at the edge of the rink, his eyes wide behind blue frames and his mouth wide open.
Victor almost fell over, only narrowly stopping himself from falling on his ass in front of Yuuri Katsuki himself. Sure, he knew this was Yuuri’s hometown. That’s why he’d come here. But Yuuri didn’t live in Hasetsu, he trained in Detroit, and how was he—to show up right now, of all times? Victor breathed heavily, exhausted and winded from the skate, as Yuuri made direct eye contact with him.
“You cut your hair,” Yuuri finally spoke, and that was what he’d said? Victor touched the back of his head, feeling the freshly shorn locks. It still felt strange to him. He’d had long hair since he was a preteen, but despite it being a big change, he didn’t think it was that high on the list of things Yuuri would want to comment on at the moment.
“I—I—yes?” Victor finally managed.
Yuuri let out a short laugh, and Victor swore that his cheeks pinked, just a little. “Sorry, I was surprised so I just… said the first thing that came to mind. That was weird.”
Victor felt his nerves, which had been taut as a bow string, loosen at that. “It’s okay. I just wanted a change, I guess.”
“I get that.” Yuuri paused and cleared his throat. “Victor Nikiforov.”
Victor nodded, a smile blooming on his face, because Yuuri had said his name, knew who he was.
“That was my program.” Yuuri’s grip tightened on the edge of the rink, and did he look nervous? He dropped his eyes to the ground. “You’re in my tiny hometown, which no one ever visits, and you’re skating my program?”
Victor grimaced inwardly. When he said it like that, it did sound like Victor was a bit of a weirdo. Victor just nodded, because what could he say now?
Yuuri lifted his hands from the barrier and squeezed them together, as if trying to stop himself from fidgeting. He let out a deep breath. “It was beautiful, Victor.”
He must have imagined the way that Yuuri’s eyes were shining when he lifted his head, must have been seeing things to think they looked like they were glittering with unshed tears.
“T-thank you,” Victor finally managed, breathless. He dared to skate closer to the edge of the rink, closer to Yuuri Katsuki, who was here and real and in front of him and thought he skated beautifully.
But Yuuri’s expression quickly shifted from one of amazement to one of--- irritation; anger?
Victor wasn’t sure, but his eyes grew wide and he skated a few steps backward.
“Why weren’t you at worlds?” Yuuri asked, and he sounded upset; angry even. It wasn’t like Yakov’s anger when he was shouting, or Yuri Plisetsky’s anger… pretty much all the time. This was something else entirely; anger edged with hurt, frustration, betrayal?
“I-I did badly at nationals and didn’t qualify,” Victor replied, confused. Why was he eliciting this reaction from Yuuri?
“If you’d gone and skated like that, you would have been on the podium!” he raised his voice. “If you’d landed the quad loop, you might have even been able to beat me.”
“I don’t think I---“
“I had no idea you could skate like that! Giacometti is good, but what you just did was,” Yuuri took a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair, “it was incredible.”
Victor gulped, his mouth suddenly feeling very dry. “You think so?” he asked, and it was quiet, but there was an edge of excitement to it.
Yuuri crossed his arms. “Sure, yeah. You would have placed above Chris and Otabek easily.”
“And you?”
Yuuri nodded, and there was something like a spark in his eye. Victor didn’t know what to think of it. “With a little bit of work, yeah.”
“You’re not just saying that because you’re underestimating yourself, are you?” Victor let out a short laugh. He knew from years of experience, of watching interview upon interview and reading every magazine that he could get his hands on, that Yuuri could be modest to a fault. He skated to the edge of the rink, closing the distance between the two of them until he was only a foot or so from Yuuri Katsuki.
It’s not as if it was the first time he’d ever seen him. They’d competed against each other several times before; at worlds, at the Grand Prix final, and at a couple of Grand Prix events throughout the years. But Yuuri was reserved, choosing to surround himself with only a few close friends, and although in general other skaters liked him and found him friendly, he wasn’t close to many of them. Victor had exchanged a few short snatches of conversation with Yuuri, but nothing lengthy, and certainly nothing like this; where it was just the two of them, alone.
“I’m not,” Yuuri replied.
Victor took a deep breath and placed his hands on the barrier of the rink, right next to Yuuri Katsuki. Their fingers were only inches apart, and Victor took a moment to imagine…
“I um, came to Hasetsu because it was your hometown,” Victor began. “After what happened at nationals, skating was difficult for me. But then… I decided to practice with your free skate from this year, and it really helped.”
Yuuri blinked, confused. The rink was so quiet, just the two of them, their breathing, and the fans that kept it cool.
Victor let out a brief shudder. “My coach, Yakov, thought I was obsessed, but he didn’t understand that this program was what was keeping my skating alive.” His lips quirked up in a small smile. “He told me to take a vacation.”
“So you came to Hasetsu?” Yuuri leveled him a look.
“You’ve always inspired me, Yuuri, from the first time I saw you when I was a child. I thought, if I could visit the place my inspiration found his inspiration, maybe that would help me.” Victor felt his cheeks flush despite himself.
He must have imagined the way Yuuri’s cheeks pinked as well. “I inspire you that much?”
“You don’t think it’s creepy?” Victor let out a nervous laugh.
Yuuri shook his head in the negative. “No. It’s… nice, actually.”
Victor’s face brightened at that, his smile wide and beaming. “Yuuri!”
“But I didn’t expect this, that’s for certain.”
“Well I didn’t expect you to be here. I thought you lived in Detroit.”
Yuuri pushed his glasses up and brushed a stray hair out of his face. “Oh I do, but since Worlds was in Tokyo this year, I decided to come back home afterward for the off season. I just got here, and I have a key to the rink so…” He let out a nervous laugh. “Sorry, I just can’t believe you visited Hasetsu just because I’m from here.”
“And memorized your program,” Victor muttered.
“That too.”
Victor reached up, hesitant, and placed a hand on Yuuri’s shoulder. “It shouldn’t be that surprising. Do you have any idea how much you’ve inspired people?”

Victor looked over the garden view, wondering how Christophe managed to get a better room than he did. Pinsion Padre was a standard hotel, as places with standards go, a mere three hundred m from the Ostrava, which was nice. It also meant Yakov could time his escapades to and from to the minute. Getting to take a break with Chris was hard. They were both trying for the gold at the WFSJC, though one was bound for disappointment. Was it wrong to hope it was him? To even think about wanting it more than his friend?
"You are radiating deep, winter sleep." Christophe said quietly, propping his chin on the Ice King's shoulder. "What has you thinking?"
"I suppose," Victor hummed, "I feel constrained."
"Why?"
Victor shrugged. His eyes closed as he leaned back. "Do you think it will always be this way? Timed, carded, tracked, restrained, bound by rules?"
"It's possible. It may not be. You have to make life what you want it to be. It's not so easy to do that here. You have to fight for what you want. Through odds, preconceptions, your own doubt. There's more to life than life itself."
A silver brow rose. "Sr. Giacometti! Such a sentiment from a spring court fey lord!"
"My dear, Victor," Christophe trilled, "even a winter fey knows the value of life."
Victor scowled, pushing himself upright. "I do, and I want it, yet forever am I besieged by obstacle to my path of joy! The world rages in ice and fire, and I can't even get a room with a view! Seriously," he spun, hands pressing into Christophe's shoulders. "How did you manage it?"
"Booked ahead."
"Body parts in trade are considered taboo in the material realm." The blank, sanity considering look turned his way made Victor repent, if only for a moment. "There must be some way to feel alive while we're here and see if we can find our prey."
"Prey, is it?"
"Yuri is. Sort of. No. I just miss the whimsy."
"Min nära följeslagare... Are we planing a daring escape?"
Victor smiled. Christoph sighed. "Very well. Let us flee."
"Really?!"
"As long as we're back by check in, they need never know. After all, we're still minors here, but until that time, it's on them to know where we are, yes?"
Victor smiled. It reminded Christophe his friend was 'born' into Russia, where all fey were dangerous creatures, terrifying in there might. "Right."
"Come. We still have time to slip into the crowds, lost among disorder, to escape into the city itself," the spring fey cooed, bating Victor until he bent. Grasping the blond's arm, the Ice King beamed, ready to take on the whole of wonder if it gave him even a drop of glamour to enjoy the living.
They ran to the stairs, steps a mere memory. Jumps and laughs echoed thrugh the tunneling spiral as they dashed past doors. At the ground, they peaked out, slipped along the wall, desperate not to laugh until they were free. The outside world would know the sound of fey mischief, it would tremble, it would cry out in pleasure to know they existed. For five minutes. Their coaches caught them in the lobby. Christophe's coach raised a brow, shaking his head in sad disappointment. Yakov looked as if his head were a cartoon explosive.
The world gave them reprieve. "Let them go," Josef sighed. "They are in a new city. They are young." Yakov frowned.
"They are young! They cannot go in a new city alone!"
"Christophe, do you have your phone?"
"Yes."
"Set an alarm. You have until nine thirty this night to be back in your room. Same for Mr. Nikiforov. You will eat a balanced supper, and should I catch a wiff of junk food or you are a second late, I will let Yakov have at you both. Then Madame Baranovskaya, who is due to meet with us for lunch in less than three minutes. She is punctual."
It took the fey a second to recognize what was being offered. Victor peered at Josef for a long moment. He was emitting a rainbow halo. Christophe seemed to radiate with joy. His eyes went wide. Josef was feeding Christophe glamour based on trust! It was so potent he could barely see when he turned, arm grabbed by his friend, racing them out the door.
part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7, part 8, part 9, part 10, part 11, part 12, part 13, part 14, part 15, part 16, part 17, part 18, part 19, part 20, part 21, part 22, part 23, part 24

20 questions for fic writers!
tagged by @clotpolesonly 💜
How many works do you have on AO3?
Officially it is 2,434 fics but probably 4-6 more fics under anon. I will eventually de-anon those but I'm not right now,,,, 👀👀👀
What’s your total AO3 word count?
2,912,560 words.
What fandoms do you write for?
I have written for 489 fandoms so far but I collect fandoms like Pokemon so I'm sure the number will be up in the end of 2023, hehe. I will list the top ten fandoms though I have done so far:
DCU (222)
Merlin (TV) (180)
Marvel (132)
Game of Thrones (TV) (125)
Marvel Cinematic Universe (111)
Yuri!!! on Ice (Anime) (108)
Voltron: Legendary Defender (97)
Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling (96)
Young Justice (Cartoon) (82)
Stranger Things (TV 2016) (77)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
2,699 kudos -- Take Me Up (G-rated, Knights of the Round Table & Merlin + Merlin & Arthur Pendragon, BBC Merlin)
Excalibur acts like Thor's Hammer - only for the worthy. Magic prevents others from grasping it.
2,105 kudos -- Sleepless In New York (No Rating, Ash Lynx/Okumura Eiji, Banana Fish - Anime & Manga)
Ash goes missing and Shorter discovers him taking care of a sick Eiji. It makes sense why Ash hasn’t contacted anyone. Or bothered to glance at his messages. Ash’s head gets fuzzy when it comes to Eiji, Shorter realizes once more. That’s what happens with love.
1,722 kudos -- Belonging (E-rated, Merlin/Arthur Pendragon, BBC Merlin - warnings for mentions of underage and noncon)
“I’ll be fine here,” Merlin insists, upright and curled in the dark, velvet blankets. He’s naked as sin, beautiful with morning-light in his thick, sable hair, his nipples exposed to cold air. “You’ll only be away for a season, maybe half.”
1,688 kudos -- A Matter of the Heart (E-rated, Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov, Yuri!!! on Ice - warnings for mentions of violence)
If there's a single thing Yuuri can't get enough of—it's Viktor's attention. People want it. The letters from Viktor's fans beg for it, for a photo or an autograph, for him to respond. One of Viktor's most ruthless stalkers attacks Yuuri in broad daylight.
1,615 kudos -- It Was Only You (E-rated, Merlin/Arthur Pendragon, BBC Merlin)
Looking across the playing field, Arthur dripping with sweat and mud, knocking away the ball from the other footie team, Merlin feels the pull. It starts at his belly, from the centre of his navel, and radiates pleasantly to every nerve-end.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do! I love to respond to comments and talk and possibly make more writer friends! 😊 And I also wanna respect boundaries with commenters so I implemented a new idea: If you comment with a certain emoji, I will leave your comment as it is and not respond. It has been a GREAT decision for the people who admitted they're shy.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
OHHHHHH GOD. THE FIRST ONE I THINK OF IS THE LAST HOURS (E-rated, Merlin/Arthur Pendragon, BBC Merlin) WHERE THEY DIE IN THE END BC THEY ARE ON VACATION IN AUSTRALIA WHEN AN ASTEROID HITS EUROPE AND THERE'S A FIRESTORM COMING. IT IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE READ THO. IT'S A FAVE OF MINE.
I do wanna say that Bereavement (T-rated, Sirius Black & Harry Potter, Harry Potter) where Harry, instead of Sirius, falls through the veil and No Matter What Happens, You'll Return To Me (T-rated, Porsche & Porchay + Porsche/Kinn + Porchay/Kim, Kinnporsche (TV)) where Kim dies bc of a random act of cruelty by a stranger and Porchay overdoses on sleeping pills and it's all in Porsche's POV,,, those are very strong competitors for the #1 spot of angsty endings.
no no I'm sorry,,, no it's definitely Devil's Side (T-rated, Lord Asriel & Lyra Belacqua, His Dark Materials) because I cannot explain to how fucked up that story got me and basically everyone I inflicted that on
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Ohhhhh god this one is harder ASJSDJ,,,, if I'm picking a fic with angst, Up In Smoke (T-rated, Korra/Asami Sato, Avatar: Legend of Korra) has a satisfying ending after a group of people burn down the Sato residency and Asami grieves,,,, but if I'm picking a fic that is fluff and has an ending I like, then Pulled From The Wreckage (No Rating, Aziraphale/Crowley, Good Omens (TV)) because I'm love them.
Do you get hate on fics?
Oh most definitely. It's happened. Either some mfer didn't read the tags I got up and they got something smart to say,,,, or is a ship hater🥱,,,, or leaves poorly masked constructive criticism,,,,,
When I do think of AO3 hate I've gotten, I do think about the time I posted a Bellamy/Clarke & Clarke/Lexa vee-relationship poly fic from The 100 tv show where both shipping fandoms showed their own asses in the comments. (And I would do it again to laugh at them.) Or I think about the guy who came onto my Merthur fic where Arthur had terminal cancer and he practiced safe consensual sex (like some of the most consensual I've ever written) and called Arthur 'a whore' because it wasn't enough Merthur sex going on in my fic??? Like you gotta be out of your goddamn mfing mind to do that nonsense.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I got 505 explicit rated fics and they're 99.9% full of smut! Mostly the smut is between OTPs/ships I like, but sometimes it's just because! I gonna recommend three smut fics of mine just for shits and grins:
Don't Fall In Love So Madly With The Night (Lestat de Lioncourt/Louis de Pointe du Lac, AMC's Interview with the Vampire + Novel Canon, 666 words - warnings for graphic content)
Louis anguishes over consuming his own flesh-and-blood, and Lestat dotes. Because Lestat enjoys it.
Come And Get It (Loki/Sylvie, Loki (TV), 3902 words)
Loki and Sylvie wind down, hopping from apocalypse to apocalypse, by trying to kick each other's ass.
Hold Me Close (Padmé Amidala/Sabé & Padmé Amidala/Eirtaé/Rabé/Sabé/Saché/Yané, Star Wars, 1000 words)
Padmé has no immediate recollection of the Festival of Light, long after dusk, save for the matter of too much scentwine — purplish in quality and strong with its bright, floral aroma. She wakes among her handmaidens, come morning light, savoring their conversation and heat and presence.
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not very often! But they do happen! I've done J. Robert Oppenheimer/Barbie (BARBENHEIMER!) with An Old Friend and Part II Ellie Williams meeting HBO TV series!Ellie Williams with Me, You, Us and Prince Charming from Disney's Snow White/Prince Phillip from Disney's Sleeping Beauty with Love's First Kiss and Emily from Corpse Bride/Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas with Butterfly Bush and then I did something kinda cool in The Autopsy of Jane Doe/The Witch crossover with Long, Long Ago!
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
AND THAT'S WHY I FUCKING HATE WATTPAD. YOU EVER SEEN MY ACCOUNT ON WATTPAD? I AM THERE TO HUNT PPL DOWN. I THINK I MADE TWO ACCOUNTS JUST IN CASE. AAAAAAAAAA.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! I have had a couple of bad experiences with people asking to translate my fics so I'm a little wary now but,,,,, yeah there's a few.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Me and @glove23 have cowritten fics! It's So Goodbye Until Tomorrow! There's also The Lie Of Living, The Truth In Wanting! I'm a terrible and temperamental cowriter sometimes, I'm sorry ☹️
What’s your all time favourite ship?
SHRUGS. IT CAN CHANGE OVER TIME. I'm gonna say Peter Pan/Wendy Darling though. Easily you're gonna get me with that.
What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
If you were ever holding out for an update on Fate's Design, Facing the Darkness, or Game, Set, Match then oops.
What are your writing strengths?
SHRUGGGSSSS. I just think through experience probably and writing as much as I have, I've mastered some kind of writing style? Or at least my rhythm in it? I know I put a lot of detail into what I'm writing.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I could be doing more with expanding on parts and structurally setting scenes up. Like I can SEE where I can improve and I wanna.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Eh. I've done it.
First fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter?
Favourite fic you’ve written?
THAT'S HAAAAAAARD. I HAVE TOO MANY FICS.
You know what, if you wanna get on my good side, just talk to me about anything out of Your Childhood Cishets, Now WLW/MLM ashsdsahjsaj the entire thing is my ongoing and beloved project

Hi! I just recently found this blog but I love it 💖 You are an angel 😇 I have this one fanfic that I have spent literal hours trying to find again because I read it a couple years ago when I was dumb(er) and didn't keep track of my favorite fanfics yet 😫 I would really appreciate your help, so here's what I remember:
It is an abo fanfic where Yuri is a 'strong' alpha and has to do like alpha training because of that and since he's a strong alpha they help him with his career and he decides he wants to be a skater like Victor whose an omega. They first meet at a competition where Victor is competing I believe. And they're fairly young when they do meet. Then they end up becoming pretty close. and like Mari and Minako supervise them on cute little dates and stuff. cuz they're young. and they compete. and there's a scene where they watch anime together. Just very cute. ☺️
I really hope you can help me out with this and thanks in advance
I hope my lovely followers can help!

Update: The Unusual Truth by ajwolf [E, 133K]
A different kind of ABO love story
It’s a few weeks before his 19th birthday and Viktor Nikiforov has just won his first Grand Prix Final Gold. He should be busy celebrating, but instead he’s forced to attend the ISU’s stupid presentation seminar. It was going to be awful, not just because he was sure to be the oldest newly presented skater there, but also because he would definitely be the only Omega. Being stuck in a room full of Alphas was definitely low on his list of things he wanted to do just days after his first major Senior Gold.
That is until a tiny boy walked into the room and went and changed everything.
Tysm for the help, @yomikoreadsbooks! 💙

twenty questions for fic writers
i got tagged by @irregularcollapse thank you!
How many works do you have on AO3?
currently, I'm at 33 on my main account and another 3 that are under a pseud :)
What’s your total AO3 word count?
166,992 in total!
What fandoms do you write for?
as of right now, i'd say i write for All For The Game, Captive Prince, and Young Royals. i have kind of written a little for Good Omens, but i'm not really counting it bc i'm not sure i'll ever finish it or post it. and i used to write for Yuri!!! On Ice and Hetalia as well, but i don't anymore (and likely never will again).
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
oh man, i was actually kind of surprised about the last two!
the beginnings just another end (Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov, Yuri!!! On Ice)
Victor Nikiforov has friends. He's four time world champion, figure skating god, beloved by most. He's won more medals than he knows what to do with, has more fans than anyone could count, and more money than he could ever possibly spend all of.
Only one problem; Victor Nikiforov has no friends.
So, he searches for some. And he finds them in a group chat room titled "crazy people talk about figure skating".
(why is there) joy in this poison (Neil Josten/Andrew Minyard, All For the Game)
Because for as much as Kevin would talk to Andrew about the Ravens, whine about Riko, warn him about Tetsuji, explain to him why he trusted Jean… he had never really mentioned Nathaniel.
In a story, once or twice. In passing, perhaps a few times. And Andrew found that he trusted Nathaniel less each and every time he heard the name.
Andrew is propositioned at a summer exy banquet, and a deal is proposed.
The Bet (Neil Josten/Andrew Minyard, All For the Game)
Andrew decides it's finally time to introduce his partner Neil to the Foxes on a summer weekend vacation, but Nicky has a better plan.
running from my heart (Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov, Yuri!!! On Ice)
When Victor arrives the night before the men's short programs at the Grand Prix Final, he's not expecting to run into another skater. Or run into him again. Or again.
Vicchan's Pet Café (Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov, Yuri!!! On Ice)
"It's alright, really. It allowed me to get a closer look at your gorgeous brown eyes." Wow. Wow Victor. Victor Nikiforov, five time Emmy Award winner, actor in countless romances, well-known playboy, just made the most ridiculous pick-up line that could have possibly come from that moment.
In which Victor is an actor, Yuuri owns a café, and their dogs just want them to be together.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
i try to, but i am incredibly bad at it :') i always want to reply, even if it's something small like just a "<3" or "thanks!" but i often forget to reply for a long time. or at all.
but i always try my absolute best to reply to comments with questions or any that really touch me in some way
What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
in general, i do try not to write angsty endings (although i know i've had some ideas for some, just never written the)
however, that said, swaying as the room burned down is still the worst i've written! it does come with the knowledge that things get better, having been written as a missing scene from yr2 which ends better than the fic leaves off, but the fic itself still ends in a pretty sad place.
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
honestly? Where There is Love, There is Life. the entire fic was meant to be pure fluff and sweetness. most of my fics have happy endings (when i actually. ended them.) and i do have some other fics that were meant to just be fluff, but i think this one takes the cake.
Do you get hate on fics?
no, i haven't! i've gotten some... sort of mean-spirited comments or comments that come across that way, but i don't think they were really meant as hate so much as the tone fell flat.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
i have not. yet. i have one WIP that will have smut at some point in it, but that's the only one i have planned and i haven't gotten to that point in writing it yet!
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
not really. i think i did, a very long time ago, but i can't remember it at all.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i know of, and also i sure hope not.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
not that i'm really aware of, but i think it'd be cool!
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
that's tough. it's probably Andreil, though. just everything about their relationship, from beginning to end of the series, is so so good and they've always meant so much to me as characters.
What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
the beginnings just another end. i really wish i could've finished it sooner. it was my first long fic, and it kept the status as my longest fic for years. i still remember how it was meant to end, too. ultimately, if i ever even write YOI again, i think i'd rather rewrite the entire story than just finish it as is. but i really don't think i'll ever complete it.
What are your writing strengths?
Cliffhangers. Dialogue. Humor, at least in my opinion. Ideas galore.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Consistency. i have terrible memory and will often write something in, planning to make use of it later in the story, and then completely forget about it.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
ouhhhh it depends. my opinion on it has changed from when i was younger. i think it can add to the story, like if it's used because the POV character doesn't know the language, but in general i'd prefer not to do it (especially since i'm monolingual rip ;;;)
First fandom you wrote for?
ahhhhhhh Hetalia
Favorite fic you’ve written?
without a doubt, (why is there) joy in this poison. it means so much to me i cannot even begin to explain it. and even aside from that, the story itself is something i LOVE rereading since it was written to my own tastes, and every time i look back in the story to fact-check myself, i end up getting lost in the story again and again. it also makes me feel so good about my writing, it's such a confidence boost and rereading it helps me realize why people actually like my writing!
i'm going to tag @daylightsimon @zee-has-commitment-issues and @spaghett-onaplate for this if you guys want to <3

───── ❝ present❞ ─────
Jack has found his way to Elias. not that they’d ever been able to keep him out. he went where he wanted to thank you very much and very few people could stop him. the town had been too much fun to pass up!
he’d made friends here and has even cement himself as part of the Pendragon household against Howl’s will
did i tell you about the baby? Well, jack found one, and did the responsible thing; drop him off with more responsible adults, Howl and Sophie. still his baby. even if he doesn’t think so
the young spirit is still hiding from the guardians and Pitch. Doing his absolute best to be almost non-existent and avoid responsibility..So far.
───── ❝ past❞ ─────
Jack couldn’t remember the before. there had to have been a before he existed in the way he knew himself. but no one had ever told him to be except for the moon. the man on the moon had told him he was Jack Frost and meant for snow, but that had been it. everything else was up to him and it had left him lost and filled with questions.
Toeing the line of good and bad. he’d never learned what his purpose was and so he struggled to stay on the ‘right’ side of things. he wanted to laugh and have fun, but all the others had such strict rules and were so boring. jack wanted to be free and be himself and it’s not like anyone could see him anyways. So who really cares?
Wrapped up with the guardians against his will it’s how he ended up meeting Pitch. the man was a walking nightmare that made jack feel like a child. But he also made a lot of sense in his own strange way. seeing right through him. jack did feel lonely and forgotten despite the man on the moon being able to communicate with the guardians. why had he been left alone? hadn’t he been worthy of at least a hi from time to time?
Nonetheless, he didn’t want to be caught up in anything and Pitch was scary, so jack did what was best.
Instead of getting caught up in anything, jack opted out, after all Pitch was terrifying.
So he left.
───── ❝ future❞ ─────
After accepting his role as "guardian of fun," jack sets out to find an approach that works best for him. he's still not very good at following the rules, but he's making an effort to do so and working toward his true purpose.
he has come to terms with his past and learns why the moon chose him that night. the discovery of his memories has given him newfound confidence in his ability to carry out the tasks at hand.
he’s still a nuisance to those he cares about. he particularly flocks to the Pendragon household where he left Philemon to be raised, checking up on him from time to time.
───── ❝ taken connections❞ ─────
Howl - scary wizard
Mael - platonic soulmate
Philemon - the baby
Sora - friend / hero envy
Luca - confidant
Elsa - friend / ice queen
Varian - friend
───── ❝ wanted connections❞ ─────
friendship: someone they met a long while back; maybe they saw or interacted with jack at a young age.
bad influence; constantly encourage each other to do bad things (partying/pranks/etc).
lingering feelings; where either one or both have some kind of romantic feelings. exploring the idea of a crush, and the meaning behind it.

YOI fanfic: Update for "Can You Hear My Heartbeat"
A while ago, I stopped posting this fic because I found it wanting. I started rewriting the eight chapters I posted so far on AO3 and because of this I had to delete almost all of them to keep everything consistent. Anyway, I just added a brand-new chapter about Viktor's arrival in Hasetsu and the reactions of Yuuri and his family. I'm going to repost the rest very soon and then continue posting weekly chapters.
I know this probably has been done a thousand times, but if you're interested in a story which fills the gaps in the anime please give it a try!
Here's a teaser for the new chapter:
He would need to come up with something before he faced Viktor again. Every conversation he had made up in his fantasies seemed hollow and unworthy of the real figure skating legend. He did neither want to come across like a freak nor like a creep.
“Yūri!” his mother’s voice sounded from the other side of the door. “Are you hiding in there again?”
Yūri jumped up. The pathways! I was supposed to clear them!
He hurried to the door and opened it a crack. “I’m sorry, Mom.”
His mother stood in the corridor, concern creasing her brow. “Have you shovelled the snow already? I don’t want our foreign guest to slip when he leaves.” Her eyes lit up as she continued, “I showed him around the baths. He’s such a handsome young man! He reminds me of …,” she peered around Yūri to the posters on the wall, “your Vicchan. He even has a poodle!”
“Mom, it’s him,” Yūri said quietly. And he’s not my Vicchan.
His mother gasped and clapped her hands together. “How exciting! What is he doing here? Did you invite him?”
In his dreams, Yūri had done this a thousand times. The sad truth, however, was that he would never dare to be so bold.
“He said he’s going to be my new coach.”
“Oh!” She exclaimed. “Yūri, this must be like a dream come true!”
“Yes, it feels like I’m dreaming.”
His mother smiled. “My dear boy, that he arrived in the season of new beginnings is a sign!”
“Mom,” Yūri said. “I … I don’t know what to do.”
“Be a good host, Yūri. Make him feel welcome.”

Summary:
Yuuri wanted Viktor to know how he felt more than anything. ‘Love’ felt too small a word for how every fibre of his being had burst into ceaseless song. He had only decided to call it that because it was the best fitting concept for this emotion the human mind could grasp.
Rejection is the last thing figure skating legend Viktor Nikiforov expects when he trades fame and desolation for a chance at life and love because of a dance and a video gone viral. Having hit rock bottom, Katsuki Yuuri is offered unforeseen help in his quest for a gold medal, but the bold advances of the man he has been admiring for half his life alienate him. Only by working together, Yuuri and Viktor can find new joy in the passion they share, while slowly falling for each other—this canon fanfiction covers everything you yearned to see in the anime and that which you didn’t even think you’d need.

Being the calm, cool, and collected ten-year-old that Yuuri was, he pretty much knew he had life figured out. He didn’t realize it then, but he was experiencing awe for the first time. The experience of admiration and elevation in response to physical beauty, displays of exceptional ability, or deep emotional expression being put out for the world to see sirening a song into his very being. The awe-inspiring stimulus could only be experienced as vast and difficult to comprehend for his young mind. It challenged his worldview. His limited sense of island and onsen and town, surpassing the scope of his current frame of reference. Suddenly the world was large and round and waiting.
The realization started in the distance with the sound of an oboe, it's low mournful sound calling the start to an event. It drew in the dark eyes. Ten years on this earth. Five years learning, really learning how to glide and turn, twizzle and slide. Jumps were new, and while he wasn't so bad at it, he admitted he was still learning. And thrugh it all, he'd merely done it for fun. It was a joy, just a thing that could easily become a passing phase. Then he saw Victor Nikiforov make the ice his home. The ease, the grace, the way he seemed to tell stories - older than cold itself - called to him. He turned towards his family and smiled, pointing at the television. "I'm going to skate like him!"
"You'll have to practice hard to get to that level," Mari said, staring at the screen. "Gonna be a lot of work."
"I can do it! I'm going to skate on the same ice one day."
Mari grunted, smiling when Yuuri couldn't see. "Right. Well, if you want to do that, we'll have to figure out some things."
"But I can do it right?"
"I dunno. Can you?"
Light illuminated the the determination in Yuuri's awed smile. "I can do anything! I'm gonna do it! Watch me!"
~~~
He lay on the cheep cotton sheets, his silken hair spread like a fan behind him, damp from the shower, smelling of cold and hotel soap. He'd feasted. He'd dined. He'd savored every crumb. Flowers adorned the thin dresser, lay tossed about the bed, tangled in heaps on the table. These were a mere tokens of the crowed gratitude. Tomorrow was the free skate. Tomorrow he would gorge.
As the drops of water glistening against his winter flesh crackled and steamed, evaporating into mist, Victor smiled to himself. Something was fabulous about this new feeling. Something distant and full of wonder. Perhaps his connection to the Dream was growing, becoming more stable now that he wasn't starving.
He heard what the announcers said. He listened to the cries of shock and delight. He felt the pull of there gasps, sucking life out of the room, afraid to let air back in lest it be their last breath. He'd landed a set of daring combos, wanting - no. Needing to make himself known. The shadows in the ice could echo a summers warmth all they wanted. The shred of snow from its surface could succumb to the heat of artificial lights when ever it wanted. They would not move him from his goal. He'd come here for a reason. He was going to find Yuri. Then he would return to the Dream, where precious things were safe from mundane reality.
His eyes closed, cerulean orbs ready to reflect the day in memory. Breath came in long steady pulls. His skin tingled. He lay limp, a smile tugging his lips.
From the mirror hung uselessly on the wall, far from any purposeful placement, a flicker of something darker remained. It watched, waited, and when the Ice King was well and truly in somnic dreams, it flicked with a quiet presence into dark being, watching. Waiting. When no reaction came, the thin comforter pulled itself over the sleeping teen before shimmering thrugh the shadows into a near by chamber.
~~~
"Tell me," Christophe said to the reflection of a very powerful being, "how is the plan proceeding?"
"If any harm comes to Yuri..."
"That's the mortal world, I'm afraid." Before the threat of manifestation became corporal, the spring fey held up a gentle hand. "You have to trust." The lack of response didn't change the weight in the air. It threatened to suffocate Christophe with a sulfuric caress. Gulping, he reached quickly for the dross he kept in the shape of breath mints, popping open the red and white tin. The stench of peppermint threatened to overwhelm. Despite knowing it would hurt, he crunched three quickly.
"He's here! I know he is! We'll complete him, and then he wont be so reckless. That's what you wanted isn't it? For Victor to stop putting lives at risk because he couldn't figure out what was missing?" For a precious moment he thought the shadow wouldn't listen, was to upset. Then the pressure lifted, leaving the smell of spice and warm autumn breezes. Gasping, Christophe swallowed hard. Clamoring to stand, he looked around. The shadows were merely shadows, the mirrors showing nothing more than they should. When he turned to sink into his bed, he cried out in alarm. He'd sat on a dried leaf, it's crinkling decay crunched under his weight.
He was lucky, he knew, to only receive a warning. The Hero didn't do half measures, no unseelie did. They really needed to find Yuri. And Victor's other half. He didn't know they could survive what would happen if they didn't.

50. “Oh god, I need a drink.” - Young Victor & Yakov
Writing prompts
Free time is something that has become scarce and sacred for Yakov Feltsman over the years, and he’s learned to treasure every hour of peace and solitude he manages to steal. It’d been much easier to do when Yakov lived alone, but due to recent events, that isn’t the case anymore.
Victor, Yakov’s seventeen year old student, has been living under Yakov’s roof for six months now, and it’s been going well despite Victor’s tendencies to sing loudly in the shower at ass o’clock every morning and leave his crap everywhere around the house. Yakov may act exasperated with the boy but he likes having him around; Victor is bright and bubbly, radiating positivity which Yakov greatly appreciates some days, relying on that to lift his own tired mood.
Yakov settles down on the couch where Victor has already set up camp for the evening, watching TV with a blanket draped over his lap and an empty bowl of what once contained popcorn on the floor below him. Yakov opens up his newspaper, beginning to read for a few minutes before the sound of hysterical sobbing and melodramatic kissing noises draw his attention up to the TV screen.
He scowls at the onscreen couple trying to make out through their ugly tears. He’d quickly discovered that Victor enjoys trashy romance movies such as these, though for the life of him, Yakov can’t work out why.
He tries to distract himself with his reading, only to immediately snap his head back up at the sound of another set of tears much closer to home. Yakov glances sideways at Victor with a bewildered frown. Victor fully engrossed in the movie as he clutches his blanket with both hands and sobs his heart out, shameless and open.
Yakov tries not to sigh. He is far too sober for this.
“Yakov?” Victor’s voice is wobbly and full of emotion, such an innocent request for attention.
It’s embarrassing to admit, but Yakov is intensely uncomfortable with the situation. Emotional displays like this tend to put him on edge, and just because he and Victor get along well as coach and student, doesn’t mean Yakov has any real idea how to comfort the teenager when he gets upset. “Yes, Vitya.”
“Do you think I’ll ever find true love?”
Yakov’s eyes roll up to the ceiling, and he drops his paper onto his lap with a heavy sigh. He rubs his forehead, muttering, “Oh God. I need a drink.”
“I’m serious!” Victor whines, blue eyes wide and distraught. “I spend all of my time training and competing; the only boy my age who I talk to is Georgi. Nobody even tries to approach me because they only see me as ‘World Champion Victor Nikiforov’ instead of an actual person. What if I never find someone who wants me for me?”
Yakov grunts, trying to straighten his haphazard newspaper and doing his best to avoid this conversation by any means necessary. “You will, Vitya.”
“You don’t know that! What if my career is all I’ll ever have?”
Yakov finally looks away from his paper, turning his head towards Victor who is blinking up at him expectantly like a tearful, innocent doe. “I need more than just a shelf full of medals, Yakov.”
Yakov sighs again, silently mourning the loss of his quiet reading time and folding his newspaper in half. He shifts where he sits, tilting his body towards Victor. “You’ll find your love, Vitya. I don’t know when you will; it could be a month from now, it could be a year or it could even be ten years, but it will happen for you. You’ll find somebody who will treat you the way you deserve to be treated, and they will love you and admire you for who you are inside, not just for how many medals are sitting on your shelf.”
Victor’s eyes still glimmer with tears but his face has broken into a beaming smile. He wipes his cheeks with shaky hands, asking, “Really?”
“Yes, really.”
Yakov lets out a breath; after his emotional words he feels lost and a little self-conscious, so as always, he defaults back to his usual grumpy self. Picking up his newspaper again, he clears his throat and makes himself more comfortable against the cushions. “Now please mute this god awful movie before it gives me a migraine.”
“Okay,” Victor says with a watery laugh, muting the TV and lying down on his side, using the armrest as a pillow. “Hey, Yakov? When I get married someday, you’re going to be the one who gives me away.”
A little air is punched from Yakov’s lungs, and he does his best to rapidly blink away a couple of tears that prick his eyes. He grumbles again, rustling the paper and saying, “Hush, Vitya. I’m trying to read.”

YOI Misunderstandings (2): Yuuri
Oh Yuuri Yuuri Yuuri. Half of this one I sort of get, and half of this is entirely on this sweet precious idiot.
Yuuri Katsuki’s image of himself was so off and skewed that it nearly cost him a chance at love. Seriously boy, what are you doing breaking up with your fiancé on the eve of your free skate?
Yuuri Katsuki considers himself a dime-a-dozen Japanese skater. And boy oh boy does he act like it. He loses confidence and falls apart at the Grand Prix final in part because his dog died the day of, and what does he do? He refuses to even talk to his idol (...or so he remembers...) He lets himself accept Yuri Plisetsky’s abuse... and bombs nationals because his mind had given up. Had internalized just retire already!
I don’t think he ever says, but my guess is that he walked away from Celestino, not the other way around. And... when he returned to Hasetsu, he figured everyone else around him saw him as the failure dime-a-dozen wannabe that he saw himself as. Then... there were all these posters of him! And people who wanted to shake his hand! And his ballet teacher there cheering him on!
But nope. That meant nothing. He was a katsu-don who was terrible. Thankfully, he couldn’t give up the skating. Not when it brought him joy. Not when there was still a tiny little voice in his head that said he still wanted to skate, still wanted to try, still wanted to give it a go. Not when... he could not give up the dream of skating on the same ice as Victor Nikiforov.
So he went on the ice, and showed his close (and safe friend) Yuko his Hail Mary: skating to Victor’s free skate. Because that was how he fell in love with skating in the first place. This scene... of a post-katsu-don body Yuuri skating was private, and not meant to launch his comeback. Hell, on first watch it almost felt like he and Yuko were on the same level as skaters when you learn fast, they are not. Yuuri is an Olympic-level skater who seems to have decided he’s only cut out to give kids lessons on weekends.
Lucky for everyone, three visionaries appeared, set on changing Yuuri’s life, one Youtube upload at a time. Yes, I speak of the remarkable skating Otaku trio.
Axel, Loop and Lutz know better than their mom’s idiot friend and conspire to make events happen. Namely, making sure that the whole skating world sees Yuuri’s beautiful skating. Which... from reactions from everyone was beautiful. Here he thinks that they’re humiliating him, but these three young ladies knew better. Because... entreeeeeeee
Victor.
“You skate like your body is creating music.”
Okay, so when Victor got there, he was not entirely serious about it all. But he didn’t show up to some neighborhood skating rink and pick up a skater. Yuuri had chops. He just... seemed convinced that his talent was from hard work, not from... talent.
This is where the most heartbreaking misunderstanding started, though not as a misunderstanding. Victor did say he would get Yuuri to win gold at the Grand Prix. He (says to himself) that he needs to cast a spell to turn the piggy into a prince. And... that’s what Yuuri believes too.
Skating On Love: Eros, he seduces Victor (who probably was frustrated at the lack of successful getting-in-pants). In the free program, he thanks Victor for rekindling his love of skating. He is skating for Victor. And honestly, that is what sparks his confidence and lets him skate his best.
But somehow, Yuuri still thinks of himself as a dime-a-dozen. We seem him ignore Minami, who seems to give no fucks about Victor but is fangirling so hard over Yuuri that the boy needs a slap to the back to come back to Earth. Victor even has to yell at Yuuri for this. He’s an icon and role model to the young Japanese skaters... and doesn’t even seem to realize it.
This all means that Yuuri never internalizes the two most important things. His evolution as a skater (stamina so hardcore it is unrivaled), lyricality that means people can’t look away from his performance, and... landing the big jumps. He’s not a Joe Blow skater AT ALL. He’s at the top of his game. Victor sees it. Victor realizes that he wants to take Yuuri even further, because Yuuri has the capacity to get even better (after all, Victor’s short program was spartan.) Victor is now as driven by coaching Yuuri as he had ever been as his own skater. He sees the future.
But... our lovable idiot doesn’t. He still does not view himself as a skater so elite he rivals the best in the world. He thinks that his hard work is how he could capitalize on Victor’s teaching. He was Cinderella who went to the ball and danced with the prince, but needed to return to the rags from whence he came: retiring before he hit his peak.
Clearly, he was holding Victor back. He was being selfish keeping Victor off the ice. Because he did not deserve Victor as a coach.
It never occurred to him that Victor fell in love with coaching and with him. That thinking about the ways to bring his fiancé into the stratosphere he deserved to be in was where Victor was in Barcelona. Yuuri gave Victor life and love. Victor’s commitment completely changed between showing up in Hasetsu and Barcelona. He was no longer playing coach, he was falling in love: with coaching, with Yuuri. He was looking at the rest of his life with a smile on his face, even after the gold medals stopped being draped around his neck.
And... there was one more person who saw this too. Who did not see Yuuri as Victor’s chain: Yuri Plisetsky. When Victor said he was going to make a comeback? Yurio didn’t so much as flinch. He immediately asked what that meant about Yuuri. He doesn’t really care if Victor comes back. Yuuri Katsuki is Yurio’s worthy rival in Yurio’s mind.
And he skated for his life to prove it, skated to keep Yuuri skating against him. Victor? Fine. Whatever. Yuuri though.
Thank god Yuuri sort of figured it out. Maybe because of the broken record, maybe because of the silver medal instead of gold. We don’t know if he ever got over the dime-a-dozen mentality, but at least we know that he is staying in the sport. Possibly to exact revenge on Yurio for taking the gold. Possibly because when he skated the perfect program, he realized how much fun that was. Maybe because... he finally believed in himself with as much fervor as Victor.
Either way, thank god that misunderstanding worked out. The beautiful skating husbands deserve it.
