She looks around to see nothing out of place before promptly calling out her students so they would make it to the hotel.

Iconicity & Semantic Relatedness in Sign Language

I did not realize how lucky I was to be able to communicate with words until taking this course. My cousins went to a deaf school from the ages of five to eleven. Neither of my cousins are deaf but my Aunt and Uncle wanted them to be exposed to children who learned differently because they thought it would be beneficial to their learning experiences. Due to this, my sister and I learned sign language as well so that we could help them with homework and communicate with them. This research discusses iconicity in signs. Some signs are non-iconic which in simpler terms means that it is harder to realize what they mean because they are not as obvious as other signs like“love” for example. Love in my opinion is obvious because a lot of people know it. There is even an iPhone emoji for it. To sign love you put up your pinky finger, pointer finger and thumb.

There are some important terms discussed in the research that it is important to define. Priming is defined as the implicit memory effect. This is with exposure to a stimulus influence to a later stimulus. In psychology specifically it is used to train someone’s memory, in positive and negative ways.  Priming is when exposure to one thing can later alter a behavior or a thought. Lexical priming effects have been found for words that are phonologically, morphologically, or semantically related. Priming effects provide evidence for how linguistic information is structured and accessed in the mental lexicon. Identifying modality-independent and modality-specific effects is imperative for knowing what aspects of lexical processing are universal to all written languages. Along with documenting how the characteristics of sign versus speech shape lexical access and word recognition. Sign phonology is not based on sound and does not involve oral articulation. It is not clear why different priming patterns are observed for different phonological units in sign language. Iconicity is the form of a sign and its meaning. Lastly, Modality is the model quality. This is a particular mode in which something exists or is experienced or expressed.

There were a couple of words throughout this study that I knew but needed a little more clarification for. These words were iconicity, semantic, lexical, priming, and priming effect, and modality. The goal of this study was to replicate the semantic priming effects initially observed in the article. The other goal of this study was to examine a modality-specific semantic property of sign language. Semantic is the study of meaning in language, this is concerned with like-words, phrases, signs, and symbols. Lexical is relating to the words or vocabulary of a language.

In this study there were twenty deaf signers, six were men and fourteen were women. All participants were exposed to American Sign Language or ASL by the age of five years. All but three participants had at least one deaf signing parent or older sibling. All participants used ASL on a daily basis as their primary or preferred form of communication. Sixty-eight hearing participants with no knowledge of ASL rated a large corpus of ASL signs for iconicity and semantic relatedness. An additional five deaf signers who did not participate in the experiment provided iconicity, semantic relatedness, and familiarity ratings for the stimuli. The target sign PIANO was primed equally by the iconic sign GUITAR and the non-iconic sign MUSIC.

Semantically related and unrelated prime-target sign pairs were created in which the prime was either iconic or non-iconic. The first set was designed to find out whether iconicity emphasized semantic priming. The second set was designed to find out whether iconic signs were recognized faster than non-iconic signs in a lexical decision task. When both are preceded by primes that are semantically unrelated. Participants were instructed in ASL to decide whether the second sign of each pair was a true ASL sign. They responded by pressing the appropriate button which was marked either a green “YES” or a red “NO”. Each participant did this twelve times.

The results showed targets preceded by semantically related primes were responded to significantly faster than targets preceded by unrelated primes. The iconicity of the prime did not increase the priming effect. There was no difference between response latency for targets preceded by iconic vs. non-iconic primes. The amount of priming created by iconic and non-iconic semantically related primes was basically identical. 

Psycholinguistic research has shown both similarities and differences in lexical access and representation for signed and spoken languages. Lexical access for both involves a sequential mapping process. Both words and signs must be phonologically decoded and encoded. Lexical access for sign language involves a two-stage recognition process where one set of elements are initially assessed and identified then that leads to lexical recognition. This occurs earlier for signs than words because of the high degree of simultaneous phonological structure. Although phonological organization differs by modality, the organization of lexical semantic structure does not.

In conclusion, iconicity did not increase the priming effect. Iconic signs were not recognized faster or more accurately than non-iconic signs. These confirm the existence of semantic priming for sign language. Iconicity does not play a robust role in on-line lexical processing. Signers were faster when making lexical decisions to signs that were preceded by a semantically related prime than by an unrelated prime. Semantic priming is a universal linguistic process that is unaffected by language. 

Earlier I talked about how my cousins and I learned sign language. I think this was overall an amazing idea on my Aunt and Uncle’s part. I would not go as far as to say that I can sign perfectly but I can sign enough to help my cousins with homework. I would also be able to help someone navigate and be able to make life a lot easier for them. This relates to iconicity. We learned sign language by studying symbols, objects, images, and events. This allowed me to understand signs and symbols between me and my instructor.

Official Art is free use as long as it is not used for monetary gain, and I will never ask anyone for money for my pictures, and I was told I am the only person that actually credits the official animators and artists. Each image of the anime is directly ripped RAW Japanese versions, that are ages old by the way. There are probably better ones out there now. Because had these when the English dub hadn’t came out on my Windows XP. About that, they should be in 1080, but since they were used into WMM I had to recolor all of them and increase their quality myself. I don’t like taking screenshots from YouTube like most people do. Not only do I increase the quality but there are assets I enjoy changing them from the anime. Most people can’t even tell it’s changed because it’s “that good” they say. The only thing I ask if you are sharing my edits, just credit me for taking to time to increasing the resolution, ripping, and alters. I do a lot of screen-stitching also. Besides that, I also like posting basic screen caps with my watermark on it. Because I did it. I don’t have to explain myself on that. Because it originated from my RAW rips, I have every right to credit the official animators and myself for doing the work. I see a lot of people post their watermarks on official images, even when it comes to illegal manga scan sites. I don’t see anyone complaining about that.

If you see my watermark on it, like Max’s it’s because I have his permission to slightly alter it as a Profile Picture! - and I usually have their credit or their watermark on it also whether in the image or in the description! Since Max intentionally made art for me also, it’s kinda a given.

I always see @redrobelover talk about bullying and certain fandoms. I can tell you what I see.

Here is what I see most of -

People “bully” others if someone is asking where a certain fan art came from - With absolutely no intent to steal it. They know they didn’t make the art.

But as soon as someone constantly credits each individual animator, they don’t care and the official animators are swept under the rug. These people are paid, just like fan artists. But they are way less known. I hardly ever see anyone talking about the animators of InuYasha. When they do, it makes me very happy and excited.

They also think it’s okay for someone to share Fan Art from a person that intentionally left because of drama like this. Basically, “this person left, probably because their art was being stolen and sold on Chinese merchandise. But I’m going to share it anyway.” And to them, that’s completely fine.

I’ll tell you all a story. Our friend was from Tumblr since 2009. I won’t give out her identity, but a lot of these people know. And she recognizes a lot of this toxicity and drama. She used to write a lot of fan-fictions and became really well-known. She was a very popular role-player.

Well she actually left because people wouldn’t stop fighting, making fake accounts to go and attack everyone. This stuff is stupid. I just don’t get what’s so fun in that.

A story about me.

I had a friend on here I knew for years. She used to take a lot of my edits and I wouldn’t say anything because she was my friend. Even if it bugged me, I felt like she wasn’t doing any harm in that. All I asked of her was to at least tell me or credit me. Which I don’t think she ever did. It was always odd to find out from another person that she was doing this, or stumbling upon it myself.

The sad part was, I saw her as a really close friend of mine. And when my life began ta change dramatically I went and told her everything. I wrote a whole novel for her. In hopes that she was going to be supportive of my life changes and choices I was making during my transition and the person I am meant ta be with. Like most of my friend are supportive of it and asked me a whole buncha questions about it. They were happy.

Unfortunately I never got the ecstatic answer from her. Instead she ghosted on me and I think blocked me. I never understood why. But I was told it was probably because we have the same mind set in a lot of things. So I will never hate on her ever. I don’t have a reason to. I just wished things like that was better.

My name is InuYasha, yes legally. Yes I'm the only person on record with that name in the US atleast. I am a transman. I've been on hormones for two years now! 💪💉 Damn those "emojis" look hella weird... August 2016 was when I started my hormones. Anyway. I'm in a relationship with @officialkagome , her name is Kagome she's a transwoman! I really came around on YouTube 2007 as TheHanyouInuYasha, now displayed as "OfficialInuYasha". I also run the FaceBook group "Official InuYasha Group" which is increasingly popular and extremely active with almost 5,000 members now! My sister really helped push me to go for the doctor's appointment for my transgender diagnosis in order for me to start my hormones. The series InuYasha really helped me get in touch with my true self, as InuYasha I see myself as one with. Being an outcast and having to make my own world was very, very difficult. I went through a lot of depression and anger during certain times and was told I could not be "InuYasha" because they told me I was a "girl". Just like in the series how the ignorant people also pestered InuYasha being half demon, that it was "unnatural" to them. I continued on, struggling as InuYasha. I started cosplaying InuYasha around 2005. I remember going to my neighbors house to watch it pre-recorded in Japanese dub! I was only about 10 years old. My grandma helped me make my first outfit. We made the top from a Wizard robe and Dancer pants patterns. I have gone through four different outfits, now 7 wigs, and 6 different Tetsusaigas. My current wig was made by Alichii from deviantART since 2004 based on Katie Bairs method, made from 3 different wigs. A historical wig. My current outfit is the Officially licensed VIZ Media outfit! It's my treasure. Kagome in the series really helped me alot to learn and to love. I have had many issues with haters, stalkers and copycats. Keh! But that won't stop me!

i find it interesting that regan admits to being shitty towards gail as far back as 2016, but has gone back to claiming they did nothing and that gail is the one at fault. perhaps it is a bit far to claim that regan is a pathological liar, but with their behaviour, i would not be entirely surprised.

another thing to mention regarding gail is that regan claimed gail pushed them into the habit of regan calling gail “daddy,” and then saying they were ace and it made them uncomfortable in the first place, when nothing could be farther from the truth. regan has publicly in front of their followers, almost 100% of whom were minors, talked about their R*PE KINK, and often called gail daddy unprompted on the feed and elsewhere. before anyone comes for me, im not claiming that they couldnt be asexual, but i am doubtful because of the fact theyve claimed that once or twice before and decided they werent, AND because of the fact they only used it to pin the blame on gail for this.

this doesnt even touch on the amount of times they threatened to kill themself.

jake:

regan and jakes relationship went as such: they met in 2015, when jake was 13 and regan was 16, and started dating. hopefully you can understand what is wrong with that, as a relationship with that age gap is ILLEGAL in every u.s. state. there was sexual conduct involved, making regan (arguably) a child predator. there is also a statement that regan dated another 13 year old when they were 17, but that is as yet unproven and the 13 year old in question is not contactable to confirm this. to the best of my knowledge, both of their current partners are also minors, despite the fact they are 19 as of october 2018.

regan was also extremely shitty to jake during this time, constantly “bullying” him (their own words) in a way that they found funny, but was clearly extremely upsetting to jake. they also pushed him aside for at least half of their relationship, as they were poly and their other partners (mostly gail) were more their focus.

above is a conversation between jake and regan. regan came to him and asked him “what [they] ever did to [him]” and after respondingg and explaining why exactly he had beef with them, he discovered that them saying they wanted “no drama” was absolutely bs, as they had been posting a psa trying to get he and gail deleted for no reason that same day. afterwards, regan messaged jake asking for a truce, which jake refused, as he was furious with them and felt that they were not in a position to ask for a truce when they were doing things like this just hours before.

this is mostly just them talking shit, but some of the stuff they say is clearly lies if you consider evidence. they constantly paint themself as the victim when they are a 19 year old abuser who takes advantage of people regularly.

i think its also interesting to note that this screenshot and later ones where regan is friends with jake are taken merely a month apart, and then, two months later, theyre back on their bs. something about that seems super fake to me.

i know this is a bit of a controversial subject, but a lot of stuff regan said/did concerning mental illness (ESPECIALLY involving their system/alters) was really shitty imo.

this is a good example of something shitty they did alter-wise. this was something they claimed OVER AND OVER AGAIN, saying shitty things they did were always their evil headmates, and constantly killing off and creating new headmates (that were mostly actually just them under a new name) as an excuse for their behaviour and a way to reset for being a shitty person.

heres them listing their mental illnesses. now, if you look in the lies section, regan says they faked their headmates (aka their osdd), so thats more proof theyre a liar. they also at one point bashed self-diagnosis, and yet they admit to self-diagnosing here. Hmm. something else to note is that in the first image, they seem to be claiming that their therapist diagnosed them, when diagnoses are made by psychiatrists, but that could be a simple oversight on their part.

as you can see in the above screenshots, all taken at different times in the last two years, theyve done this thing over and over and OVER where they claim theyve changed, theyre better, something has changed their view, and that is simply not the case, and never has been.

Throughout the globe transportation, communication and education have all improved through high tech. With every improvement, however, there are negative consequences such as resource depletion, increased population and pollution.

In our more mundane everyday activities digital technology is already changing our lives. Many of us are already suffering from distraction, narcissism, expectation of instant gratification, depression, depleted vision and hearing, neck strain and lack of sleep. The National Sleep Foundation found 95% of people when surveyed used electronic devices before sleep and this can cause issues for our overall wellbeing.

We are becoming less dependent now on our memory and more on Google but often feeling that we’re suffering from information overload. If we don’t ‘use our brains’ will we lose our capability to think effectively? Or will we adapt in a different way?

When examining brain scans of frequent internet and mobile users vs occasional users there was twice as much activity in the short term memory and quick decision making area. We are learning to skim where there is too much information. Does that mean that we are becoming shallow thinkers or does it mean our ability to decipher information is actually becoming more efficient?

Technology will affect our jobs

I attended a LinkedIn conference recently on the use of insight and data in recruitment and the potential for AI.

The recruitment landscape is changing rapidly and the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that 46% of the activities in Europe’s top five economies are already susceptible to automation – not in the near future, but right now.

This will affect all of us in some way and we need to be prepared for the shift towards even more hi tech based skills. There aren’t enough key digital workers or software developers already in many countries and this situation will only be exacerbated as the years go by. We may need a future full of coders or at the very least software that professionals can use that removes the need to code.

It wasn’t the AI potential or recruitment issues that grabbed my attention at the conference, however. It was a speech by Baroness Sarah Greenfield, a leading neurologist.

How neuroscientists see our future

Sarah used her neuroscience background to look at what could be happening to many of us in the modern digital age. She thinks that with so many of us obsessed with social media, search engines, mobile apps and gaming that we are actually losing our identity as human beings. We are lacking the enriched environment that creates increased neural connections in the brain and that the average person in the future may behave more like a 3 year old. That alarmist sentence certainly grabbed my attention.

She likened the lack of an interesting life full of different experiences to that of someone with Dementia where someone loses brain connections and doesn’t have a frame of reference (rather like a small child). In other words, their identity is missing, they have short attention spans and demand that needs be satisfied instantly.

Social Networking issues

With conversations taking place more online and less so face-to-face with no opportunity for eye contact or emotions, the true sense of someone’s identity could be slowly eroded. Words are normally only 10% of the total impact of a face-to-face conversation. Are we lacking 90% of normal interaction on Social Media? Do we rely on emojis to perceive emotion now?

Gambling

Gaming rather than reading

Sarah stated that the move away from reading to video game playing was concerning. Reading allows you to have a deep ‘relationship’ with the characters where you become the character in a way that isn’t really possible in video games.

Are gamers similar to gamblers?

Sarah showed us brain scans of gamers vs gamblers and how the Dopamine pathways were very similar and that damaged dopamine can lead to taking greater risks. The thrill of the moment when playing a game or gambling can override the consequences with the senses overtaking cognitive thought. Is our use of social media, the internet and apps reducing us to a society who is constantly craving stimulation, trying to achieve a Dopamine high, only living in the here and now and being driven by our feelings rather than serious thought?

I considered the level of gaming, social media and relentless Google searching via mobile throughout my family and pondered the consequences.

I can already see my children and all of their friends being taken over by gaming. They don’t talk about much else and seem to be totally ruled by it. Then my own usage is much higher than I would like. I work with Social Media and it is hard to avoid but I am certainly far too dependent on it.

I started delving into whether Sarah Greenfield’s comments are absolutely on the button. The scientific community have issues with some of her statements which need more proof rather than just hypothesis So I looked for further evidence as I’m sure that much of this is true to a certain extent as I see it every day with people stumbling through life joined to their mobiles and children not going out to play in the way they used to.

Facebook likes

So many of us use Facebook. The ‘Like’ button is acknowledged to be the same as receiving a little reward. Users gamble when they do something on Facebook – will we get a Like or be ignored? We’re all subconsciously looking for positive feedback and confirmation, and yes it is addictive. Social Media has become a digital drug that has taken over our culture.

And does heavy Social Media usage actually make you feel good? A study in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that Facebook and depressive symptoms go hand in hand. “Social comparison” is what links Facebook time and depressive symptoms together. Thinking that your friends are having a better time than you. It suggests that users need to post a balance of good and bad. I’ve been sucked in by this but on reflection if I’m having a great time I’m not thinking of Facebook. I see people at gigs filming the whole night but feel that they’re actually missing the chance to immerse themselves in the atmosphere (whilst I’m dancing like a woman possessed)

It’s not just Social Media, however – there’s the apps. I hang my head in shame at using Candy Crush as a Mum gamer years ago. But it didn’t stop there – I became a master of Sim City and then Fallout Shelter and realised I had better stop when my kids started asking me for mobile app tips #parentingfail. I watch Netflix on my mobile in the bath, I’m always checking Social Media for work and communicating with people in sports/community groups that I need to be on top of. It’s a mixture of positive and negative – I am reminded of what I need to do, could be doing, should be doing – but its constant. I even get mobile app reminders telling me to meditate! Oh the irony.

Scott Levin, a Director of the US Family Medicine Residency Program, thinks that parents are so focused on their children’s screen time that they forget about their own usage. “If we’re not aware, as parents, of what we’re modeling for our kids, then there are high prices to pay”.

So why do we get so drawn into games and mobile apps? Even Mums? I even know a Grandmother who played Candy Crush throughout the night.

Game designers call it ‘juice’ – the feedback or reward that you get from playing a game. Candy Crush plays sounds, flashes brightly and praises you in a strangely deep voice and apparently we like that – a bit much.

Juice is intended to join the gaming and real worlds together. The opportunities for Juice in virtual reality (VR) technology are even greater where the user is in an immersive environment and the juice might even be multisensory soon to include touch, hearing and smell.

Is the future of some of us going to be one of a VR life rather than a real one? If the VR life appears better than your own will users start removing themselves from normal society and living in this VR world?

Can gaming really be addictive?

Researchers have studied the psychological rewards of video games vs gambling vs drug use for over 20 years. They’ve compared the brain’s dopamine pathway (the pleasure part) but we still don’t know whether uncontrollable video game playing is an addiction on its own terms or just a symptom of deeper problems such as depression or anxiety.

New technologies are often blamed for compulsive behaviour when depression and social anxiety are the true culprits. “When you don’t know how to fix that and create opportunities for yourself, you feel helpless. Why not play video games?” (Video Game Researcher, Nick Yee)

What can we do to prevent digital technology impacting our lives negatively?

Sarah Greenfield recommends that we apply a little risk management to our lives and ensure that we are living real lives and not just digital ones. Her advice probably resonates with most as it is standard advice given by mothers throughout recent times. But it is probably more important now than ever.

My friends regularly tell me I should be in therapy. I’m a workaholic with crippling decision anxiety. I can turn the simple choice of whether to take a flight at 2.45pm or 4.30pm into a week-long deliberation that morphs into a meditation on my flaws as a human being. I constantly doubt my own intelligence and often put in longer hours than necessary to compensate for my low self-esteem. In sum, my friends are probably right. But since I’m busy with a full-time job and many freelance assignments, self-care usually takes a backseat to work. If I can’t find 20 minutes for the elliptical, I can’t find three hours a week to spill my problems while sprawled on plush furniture. So when I heard about text therapy, which allows you to message a counsellor via phone while you answer an email and eat lunch at your desk, I signed up. For $100 a month at Talkspace, one of the many apps that offers digital therapy, I could chat in real-time with a therapist for half an hour a week (we usually went way over time). The price is right – a typical one-hour long in-person session can cost between $100 and $300 – but I had reservations about my 30-day experiment. The solution to any workaholic’s problem is never more screen time, and just like the 10-minute pilates videos I watch on YouTube, this seemed like another half-assed attempt to take care of myself. Yet I never paused to worry about what kind of therapist actually believes they can solve complex mental health issues with the most surface form of communication. At first things started out well. I was paired with a woman I’ll call Barbara, based on Talkspace’s “matching process”. We covered the basics. She asked questions such as: “Have you ever thought about where these thoughts about yourself come from in your life? How long have you noticed these type of feelings of inferiority?” And I responded in large blocks of text in which I made connections to my childhood and admitted that I rarely feel as smart as the people around me. I knew it was therapy 101, but it felt powerful to write down the issues that I usually trivialize. The first major red flag with Barbara was her use of emojis In the early days, text therapy was a great spot treatment for my decision anxiety. One afternoon, Barbara talked me through the paralyzing choice of whether or not to attend an awards show in Toronto. Over the course of a few weeks I had exhausted my boyfriend, friends and family with my inability to say yes or no. “Just without thinking about right or wrong … what do you want?” Barbara asked. The question made me think clearly and led to the breakthrough that I rarely trust my own intuition because, well, I don’t really like myself. So my pocket therapist could troubleshoot small problems, but I quickly discovered she could not tackle the roots of my low self-esteem. The first major red flag with Barbara was her use of emojis. After our second session, in which I listed my many negative qualities, she said my long-term mission was to accept myself – a statement she ended with a winking face. I tried to stay cool. I told myself it’s 2016 and bright yellow faces are a valid form of expression, even for a paid therapist. But then I remembered she had already used a few “LOLs” and the meaningless phrase, “I truly believe that the authenticity of our true self, is in our life story...”, and I seriously began to question her intelligence. I realized that if I didn’t bring Barbara a specific problem to solve, she became a self-care bot. At the end of one session she recommended I buy an “interactive journal” from Amazon that features “inspirational quotes” to help readers “appreciate the world around us and achieve our dreams”. She sent me worksheets with kindergarten-like prompts such as “I like myself because” and cheesy TED Talks to help replace my negative thoughts with “positive daily mantras”. When I tried to explain that journalists tend to be cynics, she responded: “Pride in being a skeptic, that is an interesting thing. Can you explain that a bit more for me.” Oh Barbara, I thought, we will never bridge this divide. Once I realized her and I weren’t simpatico, I stopped prioritizing our sessions. As we texted, I kept working with 19 tabs open and threw in my own platitudes such as “How can I better accept myself?” to keep the conversation moving. At one point I even began using punctuation like an overly enthusiastic mother. What is Rhetoric to Me? (Then and Now)

After gaining a wider perspective on rhetoric by learning about different theorists and rhetoricians, my view on what rhetoric is has changed as the class progressed. After reflecting on all of the theorists and rhetoricians we learned about this past term I believe that Pericles, the Sophists/Gorgias, and Burke heavily influenced how my new definition of rhetoric was formed.

One of the first people we looked at at the beginning of the term was Pericles, a leader that gave the Funeral Oration speech in Athens. The speech Pericles gave held a patriotic narrative which told the audience who they were and helped in building momentum for the future. Throughout the entire funeral oration Pericles addresses the audience, consoling citizens and praising both their ancestors and the dead. By praising Athens’ ancestors Pericles promotes courage among the audience and the virtues which the city holds. He continues to uphold Athens’ values by promoting their democratic model as the city is free and open, taking care of those who need it and having pride in the military forces. In his oration Pericles also makes sure to praise the dead soldiers saying “I have sung the praises of our city; but it was the courage and gallantry of these men, and people like them, which made her splendid”, emphasizing that the freedom being fought for is a cherished value. As an orator Pericles makes sure to acknowledge his audience by addressing the values they continue to demonstrate while also promoting a general message that citizens shouldn’t give up yet. Many pieces of rhetoric often reflect the values the rhetorician is trying to promote or encourage when reaching out to an audience. Pericles made sure that the audience was the focus of his speech by emphasizing “we Athenians”, “our city” and “others”, playing to the citizens by praising them in the process. Gorgias’ Encomium of Helen further suggests how powerful rhetoric can be based on how a rhetorician makes an argument.

One of the first known Sophists was Gorgias who believed that we don’t know anything for sure, but that we create our own realities. In his piece relating to Helen the goddess, he seeks to defend her (800 years later) as she was found abandoning her husband for Paris, Trojan Prince Alexander.  The purpose of Encomium of Helen was to eliminate her bad reputation so that others would not blame Helen in the situation. He states, “Whether she did what she did, invaded by love, persuaded by speech, impelled by force or compelled by divine necessity, she escapes all blame entirely.” Instead the possible reasons as to why she left her husband are to blame as they were brought upon her, she didn’t initiate the adulterous acts. Rhetoric can be persuasive depending on how an argument is framed. Gorgias spins Helen’s adulterous acts by arguing that instead of her committing the act, the act instead was done to her and out of her control. This article also plays to the emotions of the audience, which is another characteristic of many pieces of rhetoric. By asserting that it wasn’t Helen’s fault for leaving her husband because other forces were at play, Gorgias appears to make the attempt of having the audience feel sympathetic towards Helen. Retaining some sense of relativity and uncertainty in regards as to why Helen left her husband further reflects how Sophists viewed rhetoric.

Often rhetoric utilizes framing and symbols to further advance an argument or message, which was used in two of Kenneth Burke’s pieces. As a result, the idea of “us versus them” was promoted which created a sense of belonging within the in-group while exiling the out-group and pinning economic failures on them. At the end of the article Burke notes that “But this unity, if attained on a deceptive basis, emphasized by emotional trickeries that shift our criticism from the accurate locus of our trouble, is no unity at all.” Rhetoricians can create a shift in what is actually going on by playing to the audience’s emotions and framing certain situations in a specific light. Groups or people can be scapegoated as a result of framing being used in rhetorical pieces, altering the message being spread.

Another piece that we looked at by Burke was The Human Actor: Definition of Man which focused on how man is a “symbol-using animal”. We as humans are constantly using symbols in our everyday lives, whether we’re aware of it or not.
