10 worst ways to start a book

1. An irrelevant point of view

It's extremely frustrating as a reader to read the opening scene of a novel, get invested in the story and start rooting for the POV character, only to have that character never show up again or show up as an unimportant character.

Your readers will feel betrayed. Why did they get emotionally invested in this character? Why did they care?

One of the most important functions of your first scene or chapter is introducing your main character and getting the reader to root for them.

Don’t waste that crucial moment on an unimportant POV.

2. Too many characters

Starting to read a new book is usually a bit confusing. You have to get to know new characters, a new world, a new writing style etc.

Don’t add to that confusion by introducing two dozen characters in the opening scene. Readers won’t remember their names or care about them; they’ll just feel overwhelmed and confused.

Additionally, readers will also struggle to root for the main character, because there are too many other people crowding the scene.

3. Telling

My name is Lisa. I’m a short, feisty brunette who loves horse riding. I have two best friends called Anna and Daniel, and we carpool to college every day. I have a crush on Josh, one of my tutors, but he’s twenty-seven and isn’t interested in me.

Telling is boring. It has its place, but the start of your novel is not it. The above paragraph could have been an interesting scene in which you showed the reader all the information via action and dialogue.

Unless you’re using subversion to surprise the reader, e.g., My name is Lisa and I’m a class-three demon, don’t start with telling. 

Immerse the reader in the story through action, dialogue and the senses. Show us who the main character is, don’t just tell us.

4. Description

Please don’t start your book with a page-long description of the setting. In fact, I would recommend not starting with description at all. 

Yes, a few lines of description later in the opening scene is fine. But the reader needs to care first. 

No matter how beautiful your writing is, readers won’t be sucked in by a five-paragraph description of a field.

5. Worldbuilding info dump

Please don’t start your book with an explanation of your world’s climate, politics, history, magic system etc. 

Once again, the reader needs to care first. 

There needs to be action and conflict and a compelling plot. The world exists as a backdrop for the story and the characters – it’s not the protagonist and it shouldn’t take up the opening scene.

6. The dream sequence

The main reason that this is a bad way to start your book is that it’s been done way too many times.

But that’s not the only reason.

It also feels like a betrayal to the reader, because they got invested in the story and the character and the events, and then you tell them it was never real.

And oftentimes the storyline and world of the dream is much more interesting than the actual story, which makes the latter look very boring in comparison.

7. Looking in a mirror

Once again, it’s just been done too much: A character looking in a mirror and describing their physical appearance to the reader. 

Firstly, no one describes their appearance in detail when they look in the mirror.

Secondly, the reader doesn’t even know who this person is. We don’t know if we’re interested in the character yet. We don’t know why we should care. So, we don’t want a detailed description of the character’s appearance right off the bat.

Show us interesting aspects of your main character’s personality, hobbies and life. Weave in physical description as it becomes relevant. It’s not important enough for the very first paragraph.

8. Starting way too early

Yes, most books don’t start with the inciting incident (although I recommend that they do), but the start of your book shouldn’t be too far away from your inciting incident.

So, don’t start with a long scene describing the main character’s everyday life. The readers want the thing to happen.

Providing context and introducing the main character is fine, but don’t leave the reader hanging for too long before you get to the good stuff.

9. Trying too hard

“Your first line has to be amazing and hook the reader. It needs to be something no one has ever read before.”

I bet you’ve heard that piece of advice hundreds of times. It’s not bad advice, but taken to the extreme, it creates an opening that is disjointed, conflated and confusing.

Your first scene should introduce your character, story and voice. So, don’t write a single line of profound purple prose that has very little to do with your actual story as a first line.

Focus on writing a good story. Introduce the reader to the book and make the main character intriguing. You don’t need a mind-blowing first line.

10. The lesson

Most books have a theme or something the author wants to say. Oftentimes, that takes the form of a life lesson.

This is good, but the lesson needs to be subtly woven into the story.

It should not be forced down the reader’s throat in the very first scene.

Don’t tell me what I’m going to learn, show me the lesson through the story.

I apologize in advance for the rant that's coming your way. If you're seeing this and you're having a good day - you're welcome to skip it.

I'm tired of the whiplash.

Melissa comes back, and then there is a string of articles basically teasing there will be heavy-handed shipbaiting in S2. Then we get a BTS interview, and now there's more to be sad about.

What is the point if the good news is overshadowed every time?

I did not get into this show to "obsess" over superficial characters. I got into this show because of its heartfelt storylines and strong character arcs. Carol and Daryl helped me sift through some dark things in my life, which I am grateful for. It felt nice to root for something precious and one-of-a-kind and funnel hope into two characters who deserved to find their happy ending together. Most people I know are still here because they think these characters deserve better. Ya know what? Because sometimes the world is shite and some days it's hard to find hope. These characters bring hope. And the fans deserve respect (not talking about the ones who were sending hate to actors and/or their families).

The current showrunner, with his contradicting statements, has done nothing but make me feel anxious - even though some of what was said was positive. He has done nothing to win my trust. The contradictions make me think he either doesn't know what story he wants to tell or, worse, he doesn't understand the characters he's working with. If storylines keep getting overlooked, and characters are treated like shipbaiting devices - what's the point of S3?

I'm happy to have Melissa and Caryl back; she's why I have a bead of hope. Her input is the only one I trust at this point. But I have no excitement left to give, and now I have one foot out the door. Until I see something that helps me trust this show again, that won't change.

Bring me a showrunner who understands these characters deeply. Bring me a director who makes room for meaningful stories. Bring me writers who write complex storylines that dive into the psyches of these characters and show us why we fell for them in the first place.

And for the love of all that's good and holy -Bring me strong and powerful female and POC voices. Bonus points for both.

I'm tired of watching POC characters get turned into walker fodder or shipping devices. I refuse to invest in a show where the characters I fell in love with get treated with callousness and shoved into storylines that don't honor them.

I'll simply find something else worth my time. Because you see, I know that my value isn't intrinsically attached to this show and the direction it takes. Sorry about the rant. It's one of those days. Peace be with you.

You don’t have to apologize for how you’re feeling. Everything you said is completely valid and to be honest, it’s where I’m at as well. Having Melissa back is amazing, and I know she has input, but it feels like she and her fans are still being punished. The lead actor reduces us to “obsessed” parasocial shippers, the current showrunner doesn’t acknowledge we exist let alone understand what Carol’s/Daryl’s/Caryl’s story means to us, “The Book of Carol” is being left out of promos, that and Melissa’s name aren’t in the casting calls. How can I trust the show to honor a narrative about a woman beating the odds time and time again when business practices show the opposite? How can I subscribe to AMC+ for a show called "Daryl Dixon" knowing it represents white male privilege 🤷🏻‍♀️ We need leadership to not only give us the heartfelt storylines and deep character arcs that we want, but also to uphold our core values, to nurture, not insult, our intelligence, and to give the lead actress the respect she deserves. That's why I think Melissa should get to choose the new showrunner.

Lol this is a long list but if you’re asking for series then my favs are (in no particular order)

Watercolor by @jinhyun ( ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED WITH THIS SERIES!! Lol and the writer knows it. I will recommend this to literally everyone if I had to choose a number one of my favs this would definitely be a contender. Female lead is cute and determined and Hyunjin….JESUS Hyunjin made me want to put my head through the wall at one point but he was literally just adorable after certain events. It’s so good full of Fluff angst and then occasional smut but not really a lot so good.)

Star lost with you and Only fools fall for you by @hyunjinspark (this counts as one cause it’s the same writer 😭) (I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS ABOUT ONLY FOOLS ITS LITERALLY AMAZING AND FRUSTRATING AT THE SAME TIME. Full of angst and smut if that’s your thing I really like this fic cause I’m in love with the enemies to lovers trope it’s so well written and I just can’t get over it. STAR LOST is still being written and the last update made me cry 😭 it draws you in and has so much going on I’m so invested like these people are real)

The guy next door- @jl-micasea-fics (so one of my favorite movies in the entire world is the girl next door and I could tell off rip this has the same concept. Love Hyunjin in this yet I just absolutely hate porn names lol 😂 only thing that makes me cringe is the porn names but you have to have that in this it’s amazingly written and heartbreaking and ugh you’ll dream about Hyunjin tbh 😭)

Maybe it’s not our fault by @cosmic-railwayxo (incomplete 🥲🥲🥲 unfortunately but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the wait if the writer gets back to it it’s so good. Exes au tbh and I love it so much there’s so many misunderstandings and heartbreak yet there’s fluffy warm moments ugh you’ll be rooting for them for such a long time and always find yourself looking back to see an update cause you have to see what happens next. Lol as you can see I couldn’t just pick 5 fics so I picked 5 writers 😭 but I find myself just enjoying a whole bunch of stuff and there’s one fic that I literally can’t find it’s older and about hyunjin but I think the writer deactivated it’s my fav fic and I’ll describe it for you but I wish I could link it cause it would be my legit number one but it’s about a struggling relationship with hyunjin he’s been distant not answering calls texts and the reader decided she had enough so she asks to take a break and he begs her not to, that he wants to be with her and he’s sorry so she gives him a second chance. Her best friend is Chan and there’s multiple parts to it. At one part they go to some party or something and hyunjin gets jealous she was hanging out with Chan so he makes it seem like he was flirting with some girl and the reader sees and storms out Chan gets rightfully pissed and tells him he fucked up for the last time and ugh it’s so angsty and good they do end up together but I can’t ever find it but I hope you enjoy reading those if you haven’t and if you have lmk which ones you like

Holy shit, Bloodmarked. Finished my ARC a week ago, and I still just feel like...enveloped by it. This book was so good, and every review that says you’ll be clamoring for the next book after you finish is dead right. (Oh, Bree, I hope you know what you’re doing!) Putting my preview thoughts under the cut.

“Briana Irene, forever leaping before she looks...”

Bree’s journey continues to deliver and I love her oh so much. She is an amazing protagonist, perfectly flawed and achingly real. It is impossible not to root for her. The other characters–old and new, protagonists and antagonists–are similarly well-drawn. And, man, are there some new characters to loathe! Don't worry; there are some newbies to love too. Lots of “screen time” for William and Alice. Less so for Nick.  As for Sel, let’s just say there’s a reason Sel is on the cover.

For the Sel-antis made nervous by this, let me just say the totality of Sel’s actions in Legendborn are addressed on page and then some.

Shipping: Let me preface this by saying that I don’t necessarily consider myself a shipper of either ship. BreeNick was sweet and nice and fine. But I’m here for the slow burn, and they got together before I had a chance to actively WANT them to get together. If that makes sense. Meanwhile, BreeSel wound up taking up more page-space and was obviously being set up for further exploration. To me: BreeNick felt like a plot point, but BreeSel felt like the story. So I was cool with BreeNick but not invested in it while also open to BreeSel and sort of anticipating it. I also like my pairings ironic and am down for well-done (KEY) enemies>friends>lovers. I 100% trusted Tracy’s ability to pull it off. That trust was not misplaced.

Because...BreeNick isn’t starving, but holy smokes! BreeSel is FED. Whole multi-course meals. They got me. I’m getting all squishy just thinking about it. (I mean this as the highest of praise: we’re talking fanfic levels of squee!) There’s also at least one new ship I think most will get behind.

The plot: It does start off slower, necessarily so, but ultimately moves at a nice clip and does a great job of setting the stage for the next book while standing firmly on its own. The world expands nicely and the magic system is both broadened and more fully detailed. I promise you, whatever you think this story is about/is going to happen--you are probably wrong. Can't wait to see where it all goes from here!

The writing remains amazingly immersive. Pulls you in and latches right on to your senses and emotions. Tracy knows how to tell a story, that's for sure!

And ahh! I can't wait until November when I can re-read in physical form and highlight the hell out of my ebook and re-experience it all again in audio. Much love.

I need to keep ranting about obey me characters and if they’d like ASOUE.

There will be spoilers for A series of unfortunate events!!

In order:

Lucifer wouldn’t particularly enjoy it but he can recognize the story, plot, and style and if he enjoys anything in it. Probably likes the dark academia look of the series.

I feel like his favorite character would be Lemony Snicket, Lucifer likes the tone and scene Lemony sets, his words, and also how he’s constantly telling the watcher to “look away” from the tragic tale and find something better and more enjoyable.

Mammon would really like it, not that he thinks it’s bad just that it’s not his thing. If he had to say something he likes it would probably be how rich the Squalors are how the plot is well written and shows characters and how they grow(I would say “development” but mammon doesn’t know that word yet)

Mammon would say his favorite character is Sir(form the Miserable Mill episode) but it’s actually something like Jerome, or Jacque.

Jerome not only the riches but also how he stood up against someone he loved (Esme) for some kids he barely knew and because he didn’t want to take her manipulation anymore, he likes the bravery and selflessness he had.

Jacque because Mammon just likes Jacques personality (and how he practically insulted a child) and got killed trying to save the Quagmire triplets and Baudelaire’s.

It’s not Levi’s his thing, he prefers his anime and not “normie shows”. (😔) he would probably hear about the mystery in it and be like,

“Omg!!! Reminds me of [insert very long obscure mystery anime name]”

At least he has something to enjoy with that..ig???

I honestly think Levi like Montgomery Montgomery. The guys has hundreds of REPTILES. Who would love that?? LEVI. THE SNAKE DUDE!!!

I feel like Monty’s energy and how uplifting he is would completely mild out Levi’s insecure and self destructive energy. (They’re both too focused on reptiles to care about feeling bad)

I already covered Satan but I have something else, I link my first one!

I already said Satan would like Klaus..but I also think he’d like Olivia Caliban. She’s a librarian, smart, makes literary references, he’d love her character, so much!!

Speaking about personality wise, she likes how she sacrificed herself to be eaten by fucking lions. LIONS. SHES A FUCKING BADASS.

(He’d probably like the quagmires too, went fucking crazy when they revealed Quigley was still alive)

He was so invested when she and Jacque started having romance and absolutely heartbroken when he died.

Asmo would find it too sad, he can’t ruin his perfect makeup!! (Also it’s just tragic) He wouldn’t really enjoy it the style is too dark, at least some of them have good fashion sense he can admit that.

Hands down..Asmo would like Esme. Not because of her actions against the Baudelaire’s that’s just bad, he likes her fashion and obsession with looks, he’d watch it and be like “this isn’t..omg, girl slay haha babe that’s so pretty” He understands the “pinstripes are in, and those nasty outfits you’re wearing? Are out.” “you’re so right girl”

I feel like he’d hate Carmelita because she’s just a bitch.

Beelzebub is probably mixed, he doesn’t hate it but he doesn’t necessarily like it, I’m having a hard time here okay

This one is easy, his favorite character is Larry your Waiter. Duh, the guy is a waiter and can make some bomb ass root beer floats I mean did you SEE the root beer floats in that one episode??? Fucking delicious.

Belphegor could care less, yeah it’s cool but I wanna go to bed?? He’d watch it if he had too and wouldn’t complain at least it’s kinda cool.

I cant think of anyone he’d like, he’s probably jealous of that scene of Jerome just fucking conked out on the couch tho.

Diavolo thinks it’s interesting, he’d find it sad but thinks it’s very good and well written, would watch if he felt like it.

His favorite would probably be Justice Strauss, her energy matches his, energetic and caring, 10/10.

Or Charles and Phil from the lucky smells lucky mill.

Barbatos i already talked about with Satan

I honestly think Simeon would be interested and I think he’d like it, despite the tragedy its well written and interesting, he’d watch it.

His favorites would probably be Strauss and Monty, they’re both just so caring, kind, and comforting! (Monty’s cake also looked delicious as hell he wants it)

I feel like he’d like the Baudelaire’s and Quagmires too, all of them, their so devoted, forgiving and caring he thinks their such good kids.

I think Luke wouldn’t be allowed to watch it, Simeon doesn’t really want him to, Luke was upset until Solomon was like “okay watch it then” and Luke was so sad after like..Solomon..wtf..☹️

Luke likes the beginning of the reptile room with meeting Monty that was very nice, and when the Baudelaire’s met Strauss. Happy moments guys happy moments..

If Luke had favorites it would be Sunny and Strauss, Sunny is into cooking and baking and he is too, he also loves Strauss motherly energy, very nice.

He had nightmares of Count Olaf for a week.

Solomon feeds off the tragedy..he loves it..so why wouldn’t he love this sad story. Him and Satan agree it’s a great series, 10/10.

His favorites are any character who is fucking psycho Monty and Olivia, he likes the reef he Monty does, I mean, Solomon is a sorcerer who likes research, he likes Monty. He likes Olivia’s book smarts and how she can just be like “oh you need a book on [very specific weird thing]? I got it.”

Bonus!

All of them agree that the Baudelaire’s and Quagmire tripletes, they’re respectful, kind, caring, smart, and overall good kids.

Guys mid way through this I found out that Sir and Charles are a gay couple, and then Charles was with fucking Jerome my suspicion was true.(now I remember it being hinted but omg)

This was meant to be more serious and it was in the beginning with Lucifer and Mammon but it devolved into my rambling, I’m sorry for that😭

If it looks like I favored Mammon with how long his is I don’t, I just had a lot more for him because his felt easier and I wanted to get that out.

You don't like Majimako? That's a bit surprising. I think they're one of the few romances RGG actually did well (the only one that made me root for them to be together in fact.) In general, Majima's story in Zero was a lot better than Kiryu's imo. It's kind of a fandom consensus that I've seen, and I think a large reason for people to like his story better is his relationship with Makoto. Kiryu's story is comparatively dull so I was even a bit disappointed to find out Majima was never a protagonist in the future games, lol. Everything from his plotline, to his supporting cast, to his character to the romance he was involved in was just better. Kiryu's side had just Tachibana and Nishiki as interesting side characters, and neither of them stay alive for long enough for people to actually be invested in them past the titles they actually show up in. Makoto is still alive out there, Majima built a name for himself as the patriarch of the largest Tojo family and his sworn brother is still alive too. There were so many great opportunities to tell a great story with him and her again (I know she's married, but they could still be friends at least) and Kiryu's story is comparatively very... underwhelming. No shade to him, but I personally don't see anything to look forward to since I prefer characters that emote more than he does. (Sorry for the wall of text, I was just surprised by your tags)

Admittedly, I don’t want to talk about the reasons why I don’t like it. Some of them are a bit personal, and I’m not so interested in saying anything out loud as I’ve been treated a Certain Way by fandoms in the past. It probably sounds like I’m overthinking something or being overly dramatic, but those were some really messy times (to say the least) that have caused me to have a fear of voicing my opinions at times.

But also, I get where you’re coming from with liking the emotional person over the seemingly unemotional. I do relate to Kiryu more however in that field. And I love Majima (don’t ask me who my number one character is because I don’t know) a lot, but I do also like Kiryu a lot as well.

In AWY is Hinata ever gonna date someone? I mean, she feels hella pathetic waiting around like that. Idk I just think she should explore a bit outside of Naruto. Tho I guess her personality in there won’t allow her. I can’t lie, it’s kinda painful to read. I liked when she talked to Itachi and Sasuke. She felt more of her own character than someone who’s waiting around helplessly for Naruto and doing whatever he does or says. Like a puppet or a dog without a master. It seems like she’s always the one reaching out to him even when he’s in the wrong. I wish Naruto for once will do the reaching out. You can see even in the text messages, she’s the one texting him the most and sometimes he doesn’t respond at all while she always does no matter what. Tbh I don’t know what I want from her. She’s kinda confusing and too hard on herself. When it comes to Naruto, I feel like she lacks a backbone. Sometimes it feels like he walks all over her without considering her feelings and she just allows it. She frustrates me but I can’t help but keep reading and rooting for her. I guess I want her to make Naruto jealous instead of her always being the one feeling it and forgiving him real quick and reaching out and doing the heavy lifting. Anyways, I’m happy you’ve updated AWY and glad you’re doing better!

Keep in the mind, the texts were from their second year of middle school, and yes they did fall off even further between then and this chapter.

At risk of telling you what you already know, they were friendly in school but uninvolved in each other's lives and it was getting that way increasingly. They finally actually talked, like, Naruto didn't just go and get distracted and forget to reply to her like before, so the old pattern in their texts was just another form of proof of how things looked before to contrast to the development happening in real time.

Hinata's pining and putting Naruto first will always be there, but as his sister. And vice-versa, that's what they're going to keep working at. I like to think that Naruto got miffed when she had to leave because he was projecting prior experiences onto her, otherwise he's all in with being the best brother and friend ever. He was ridiculously happy spending time with her the night before, that hasn't changed.

So... As for Hinata developing a life outside of Naruto, that already happened with her club and her committee responsibilities. She even believed she might be getting over him, however that in of itself was incredibly painful and she grew to believe that the distance was exacerbating her feelings, not dulling them. That's why they are where they are now. So there's no intention of revisiting that because it would be backtracking, but whatever happens to them after high school is a different matter.

As for Hinata ever dating outside of Naruto, that is planned to varying degrees of 'seriousness'. I hope to get to the Rinne Matsuri in Ch 9, as that will be the first example of this. 😘

And more jealous Naruto? I say 'more' because he's been quite weird towards Itachi and Iruka already when it comes to her and it has been my intention to play with that further next chapter. 🤔 I do have overly protective, ignorantly jealous Naruto planned as they spend more time together. I also have Naruto disappointing her by going back to his old habits of forgetting her, I just won't spoil exactly how that happens ofc.

All in all, life is gonna happen to them, and yes they should try to outgrow their worst tendencies and habits and such, figure out their boundaries, etc. I agree that it's been rough for Hinata to love him all this time and that she should only do as much as is healthy for her. I do want that to be part of the narrative, absolutely, if it hasn't already lol.

Even Naruto needs it too.

On Naruto's end, he belatedly realized that he felt scammed by Neji for entrusting her wellbeing to him. He's felt less like family over time and more like an unwilling bodyguard coerced into the role with the promise of being loved and accepted for his efforts. I think on some level, all of his forgetting about Hinata was just a reaction to having been convinced into caring about their sibling bonds when all along his own needs were going unmet, if that makes sense. That's why they had that falling out, because Hinata's words about Neji being her only family made his own repressed resentment valid.

Your writing ability is amazing and your story is so riveting! The pacing and the skips between times and places work so well and keep me so hooked on what happens next and what backstories and secrets each character might hold. I also adore the way you write each character.

2/5 Tauraus is such a sympathetic protagonist with his own flaws and mistakes he obviously carries with him, it's hard not to root for him. As are Raivis and Gilbert. And Eduard! He's such a standout character in this story for me, I could write so much more about how invested in this character I am.

3/5 I love that you wrote him as a clever conman, as opposed to a lot of other fics that interpret him as the smart, pencil pushing goody-two-shoes. I understand and enjoy reading both versions of this character, don't get me wrong, but this was really new and interesting. Here, his emotional intelligence is central to his character, and his charm and cleverness carry him through life and different cities, but that doesn't totally eclipse his book smarts and talent in school.

4/5 And it was a little heartbreaking to read about his wishes to pursue medicine. All in all, just wanted to give an extra shoutout to the way you wrote Eduard in this story. Speaking of Eduard, you wrote the dynamic between him and Taurus so well! They clash and argue, which makes sense as people grow together, and especially as they undergo so many stressful situations. But they also care for each other, which makes me more invested in them.

Hello!  Hi! I wanted to take them time and respond to your messages, so I’m compiling them all into one here. First of all: THANK YOU SO MUCH!! No need to worry about spamming my inbox, lol!  These messages were the best thing to wake up to.  I’m so glad you’re enjoying the story, and especially Eduard 😊.  He has been fun to write.  I wanted to take his character beyond the smart boy he’s so often portrayed as.  There are many sides to being “smart”, and I wanted to explore how his intelligence might manifest if he had been raised differently from Tauras.  And even though he and Tauras are related in this, there will always be that element of class standing separating them, which just adds even more to their dynamic.

I feel like I had more to say when I first read these and now my brain is all mush. I'm still so giddy over this, you have no idea!

On scope

So in my last post I mentioned scope, which is a gamedev term to mean how big your game is and, more specifically, keeping it from getting out of control. Not putting too much work on your plate, basically.

This is especially important for an amateur developer who is just starting to get into game development. Like me!

I’ve heard this a lot, but this video I watched recently helps sum it up really well. In that video they mention the concept of a “minimum viable product”. Basically, if you cut away everything that isn’t necessary, what does that look like? And is it fun?

Another video I watched related it to drawing. When you’re drawing, you do a sketch to give you an idea of the final picture, work out anatomy issues, etc. The minimum viable product is the “sketch” of your game.

So what does my sketch look like?

Here’s my “Core Features” list, or what I believe is the simplest form of this game in a “complete state”. This is a little more indepth than the video’s proposed “minimum viable product” - the example given was Mario jumping on a map with pits. No enemies, no powerups. This is more like Mario jumping on a map with pits and enemies and the occasional platform or mushroom.

To simplify it further would probably be “you have a daughter, and you can raise or lower her stats through picking between three jobs, and you can reduce her stress by resting.”

What I found really helpful was to add questions to every item. What would these actually look like? This got me thinking about the actual implementation.

(To be very clear about point 4, this was written when I was envisioning it more as making homunculi, where you could potentially create bespoke assistants for the needs of folks in town. You can’t sell kids in my game.)

Anything that did NOT feel essential was moved to a separate list. Things like missions, randomization, talking to the girls, a New Game+ system, that sort of thing. Nice to have, but ultimately unnecessary.

That said, I also created this:

This is “Core QOL”. QOL stands for “quality of life”, meaning optional features that make a game smoother and easier to play - think of an autosave system, being able to auto-sort items in an inventory, etc. Features that, while technically unnecessary, I consider to be a priority.

For example, you don’t NEED to be able to give your daughters custom names. I could just make it so that your daughters’ names are randomized. Technically speaking, it’s an optional feature!

But there’s something really special about custom names, I think. Sentimentality is what separates these games from being just a series of bars you watch go up and down. You’re forming an emotional bond with a character that you’re taking a parental role over, and it helps you feel more invested in the gameplay.

It might seem a little silly, but here’s an example of that sentimentality in action: I always name my Pokemon. I feel a lot more connected to what’s going on when I’m rooting for “WIDE LOAD” instead of “Parasect”. Suddenly, it’s not just a soulless collection of pixels that attacks when I pick the option - it’s my baby boy, WIDE LOAD, who I risked life and limb to catch even if he was 20 levels above me at the time.

And I love him so, so much.

Getting back to my list, you can see there’s a lot of “you can view the stats whenever”. Let me give some examples.

In Princess Maker 2, doing an activity will increase some stats and decrease others (e.g. working on a farm, working in a kitchen). It will not tell you which ones beforehand - you have to try them out and see. Sometimes it’s easy to guess (Farming increases strength and constitution), sometimes it’s not (Cooking decreases combat skill??). It’s trial and error.

This means that you have to write down or memorize what does what, which can be frustrating. I don’t mind the first attempt at something not giving you the info, but it should “unlock” the info so that subsequent attempts tell you exactly what stats an activity raises and lowers.

Games like Cute Bite improve upon this by telling you what stats will be increased by a job or study activity, but they don’t tell you what stat is decreased by a given job. The omission seems to be intentional, probably to make the gameplay more interesting, but I still dislike it.

Perhaps the “oops I forgot that decreases Etiquette, oh no!” is compelling gameplay for your typical gamer, but as someone with memory issues and ADHD, it just means I have to take notes. It would be cool if the game did that for me instead of having to have Notepad open while I play it.

It’s not like I want the game to play itself, and you’ll have to write down certain things anyway, like “having x stat be 100 and y stat be 150 seems to be the requirement for this character to appear” - but these are such basic things you interact with so routinely that I don’t believe automating them is bad.

To bring it back to Pokemon, recent Pokemon games tell you if an attack is super effective or not very effective. I’ve been playing these games for over 20 years, but this made them a lot more accessible and fun to me. Some folks complained about this “dumbing the games down” - as if they aren’t made for children - but I personally don’t find “ugh, right, I forgot Steel resists Psychic for some reason” to enrich my experience.

Back to raising games. So not only do you have to keep in mind what stats are increased by what, you have to remember what stats your character has and what stats you were trying to improve. Cute Bite helpfully puts the stats page next to your activity list, but Princess Maker 2 requires you to back out of your calendar entirely to look at them.

So I very often end up in a spiral of “what was I improving again?”, backing out, looking at the stats, saying “oh right”, going to the jobs, trying to remember what I was doing, et cetera. The video game equivalent of “walking into a kitchen and trying to remember what the fuck you were there to do”.

This is why I list these things as Core QOL. Backing out to look at a separate menu should be something that happens as little as possible. You should be able to, ideally, look at all the information you need on one page, or with a click or two.

Bullet point #5 (a memory album of daughters gone by) is by far the least essential one, but comes back to sentimentality. Being able to look back at the first daughter you ever made, to see her face again and what her ending was. It also does have a practical purpose - if daughter #1 was a “failure” at achieving a certain goal you were looking for, being able to look at her stats would give you some idea of what to try for with daughter #2.

All of these have the potential to be cut, but that one is the most likely. That said, all of them would be ideal to have.

There’s still the list of various features I’d like to have but don’t consider essential, but, well, this post is long enough already. But I feel pretty good about having nailed down the things I’m most invested in developing, and I feel like by working outward from there, the most necessary features should become more obvious.

Gonna be real with you, if you feel the need to preface your reply to someone with that much “I mean no offense BUT”, you might want to reconsider hitting send. Because whatever you’re saying is probably going to annoy the shit out of them.

That said, I’m gonna choose to respond to this in a constructive way.

To start with... just about every show about vampires has a cadre of fans who watch it specifically for that reason. I’m not going to write you a whole academic paper here (partially because people have already written hundreds of thousands of words on this exact subject) but yes, queer people and those who have distanced themselves from mainstream religion often see themselves in horror and monstrous characters. Vampires are a particular focal point for these groups, partially because vampires do set themselves in direct opposition to Christianity -- something that’s been displayed many times in this show. I’d go so far as to argue that it’s one big reason Guillermo has fixated on vampires. I think he’s built up vampires in his head as “these creatures are everything I am not but everything I want myself to be” and the way they run counter to his religious upbringing is part of that. I’d offer up my evidence, but being real, I don’t really think you care.

The fact of the matter here is that we have a comedy show that has repeatedly brought up religion, particularly Catholicism and New Religious Movements, as something that can be very harmful to vulnerable people. (Like children or vampires going through a midlife crisis.) It has used this even in episodes that are designed to further character development and, yeah, invoke feelings in the audience. I don’t think it’s shocking that people then expect those ideas to carry through to the rest of the writing, especially as the show has started to take its characters and their emotional problems more seriously.

Honestly, I think it’s depressing that there are people in fandom who see people actually emotionally and intellectually engaging with media as a bad thing. I don’t see the point in going up to fans and telling them that you think they’re getting too invested or that they’re dumb for expecting more out of a show they love. I do not expect a show like WWDITS to be therapy for me -- that’s what I pay my therapist for. But it’s also fair for fans to discuss missed opportunities and anger towards the writers when they say things in interviews that are rooted in homophobia. Obviously queer and ex-religious fans are going to feel this more keenly, especially when the show has loudly and explicitly positioned itself as a welcoming environment for people who are queer and/or questioning religion.

I don’t think you’re actually here to discuss these topics; I think you’re here to leave a really condescending reply in someone’s inbox. Your motivations are your own, I suppose. But it’s not a bad thing that other people are considering these ideas, nor is it silly for fans to feel upset right now.

I have expected from WWDITS exactly what it’s given me. But yeah, I do expect quite a bit more from its IRL writers.

top 5 romance anime ☆

I adore romance anime and this list changes a lot, but these are my favorite romance anime’s as of right now. 

1. Fruits Basket - 3 Seasons

Does Fruits Basket leave me in tears and shambles every time I watch it without fail? Yes. Is it my favorite romance anime of all time? YES. I could write an entire 10-page essay on why this is my favorite anime of all time, but this is a tumblr post so I’ll keep it short. The characters in this anime are all so lovable and the relationship between the characters is paced just as it needs to be. It played with my heartstrings in all the right ways and I love it so much. This anime does character development really well and has an amazing plot, so if you haven't already watched it, this is me literally begging you to do so because it is so good. 

2. Snow White With The Red Hair - 2 Seasons

Talk about a comfort anime...I’ve watched this countless times because it just never fails to make me feel better. It’s so well written and the animation is beautiful. It has a special place in my heart. The characters are so lovable and this whole show has this whimsical feel to it. It’s number 2 for a reason, plot? 10/10, characters? 10/10, romance that doesn’t sexualize it’s characters and actually has substance and genuine connection between characters? 10/10 yes. 

3. Maid Sama! - 1 Season (a tragedy) 

I LOVE THIS STUPID ANIME. If you’re looking fora corny rom-com this is the one for you. I actually adore the cast, especially the main character. Misaki is my idol I love her. This show differs from the rest romance and plot wise, but it’s so entertaining and I wanted more after the finale. The manga is also a recommendation of mine! It’s light--hearted and silly, but still made me emotional. I was rooting for them so hard and its just an anime that I can fully indulge in, cringey romance and all. 

4. Kamisama Kiss - 2 Seasons

2 words, Tsundere. Fox. This is an anime I’ve liked for a while and whenever I go back to watch it I fall in love all over again. It’s also light-hearted in nature, kind of like Maid Sama, but the story line is completely different from the others. I love a lot of the characters, if you cant tell character design is very important to me, and it makes the show a lot more fun to watch. I go to romance anime when I’m so so a lot of these are “feel-good anime” for me and this one is AMAZING if you just want a tiny escape. If you like a sort of slow-burn “enemies” to lovers sort of thing then I totally recommend!!

5. Sasaki to Miyano - 1 Season

Now, this is one I’ve just recently watched and I am already so invested. I’m not a big manga reader, but I did buy the manga so I could see the whole story so far and I love it. The emotions are presented in such a relatable way and it really makes you wanna root for the characters. The animation is so pretty and you just wanna reach through the screen and give all the characters a hug! It handles an LGBT relationship really well and it deserves all the love!

My loves, my life, my everything. I LOVE this cast of characters. The story is so cute and the animation and overall feel of the anime is just gorgeous. I couldn’t stop watching and I actually adore this anime. Young love, and new experiences is what this anime is all about and I would recommend it to anyone. If you want something cute, but emotional then this is a perfect anime. I like relationships that are focused on change and trying to understand each other and I think this anime does it perfectly. 

☆ Devils Line - 1 Season (another tragedy)

Now this one has a special place in my heart, but it’s not officially on the list because it was cut way to short to do the story the justice it deserved, BUT that being said, it is still an amazing anime. I was HOOKED. Like couldn't turn away from my screen hooked, and Anzai is one of my favorite characters of all time. It’s also heavily fantasy-dark and science fiction-esc. If you like vampires you’ll like this. Edward Cullen has nothing on Anzai <3

A/N:   Here I go again,  This chapter 5 was over 4800  words and I was still not done, so I decided to cut it into two chapters so it wasn’t so much. So now, there will be six parts + a epilogue  This really does seem to write itself for me.

A/N:  This is very special to me.  So please be kind.  I’m writing this as a tribute story to my Riley FC, the late Cheslie Kryst, in a way to deal with my grief which has almost been consuming my life.  I started following her in 2019 when I was watching the Miss USA pageant.  I rooted for her immediately.  Not only was she from my home state, but she was just this bright twinkling light on stage, she was a minority, like me. So when I came to the fandom in January 2020 and started writing stories for TRR I picked her as my Riley FC because she embodied what I wanted my “Riley” character to be.  Even in her untimely passing, I am still finding out more about her life and I have written her pretty accurately, even down to having depression.  So I will say it again.  If you need help please reach out.

"Are you guys sure you want to do this for me?"

"I'm sure Riley."

"No Liam, ask him again. You could get arrested or go to jail for what we are about to try to do. And he is your brother, he doesn't even know me."

Liam turned to Leo.

"Are you sure you want to help me with this?"

"Is she making you ask me again?"

“You can understand why, right? If things go wrong…”  Liam started.

"Look Ghost Chick, I get it, and I'm calling you Ghost Chick so you know, that no one is the boss of me. I've made some stupid mistakes in my life that wound me up in jail overnight and arrested before over something meaningless. If I'm going down now, I want it to mean something. To be for something important. Do you understand that? And you really mean something to my brother. I haven't seen him so invested in someone's well being…since….. 

It's just been a long time. And I want to help him fight for that. So don't worry, I got my big boy underoos on today. I’m going into this with my eyes wide open!!! GC are you with me?”

“Why does everyone feel like they can make up nicknames for me?”  Riley laughed. “But I get it and tell him Thank you.”  

"She says thank you Leo.  I also told her about Olivia."

"Well! Alrighty then! Guess we should get this party started?"

Liam locked the apartment and they all headed out front to Drake’s van.

"Wow…. No wonder you called his van  a serial killer murder van. It really is, complete with a person-sized dent on the side."

Liam laughed.

"What did she say?" Leo asked.

"She's talking about how Drake's van looks like something a serial killer would drive."

"Man…Riley let me tell you, Drake is harmless, the most serial that guy is gonna get is the corn flakes he eats in the morning." Leo did air quotes when he said the word “serial.”

"Okay that's not helping his case, and that is not real cereal. Nobody eats corn flakes willingly for breakfast. 

Somebody was definitely murdered in this van, multiple someones!  You can’t convince me, that dude isn’t hiding people in the floorboards at his house, and at least one person has not been hit by this van."

Liam told Leo what Riley had said and Leo laughed even harder.

"God I love you Riley. You're a really funny chick."

Riley instructed them where to park; It was the easiest place they would be able to get to.

"First, we'll need to get you guys in scrubs and lab coats so you blend in. I know where to go."

Riley led Liam and Leo to the intern lockers where there were always extra scrubs.

Both quickly got dressed.

"Leo take your sunglasses off."

"Actually no, you look like interns; they will think you're trying to be cool. But just Leo."

"Okay how do we look?"

"Like you fit in."

"It's a beautiful day for saving lives, here at Seattle Grace."

“Did you really just pull out a Grey’s Anatomy reference? Shut up Leo, this is serious."

Liam’s nerves were definitely getting the best of him.  

"No, cockiness is working for Leo. Liam you have got to relax. You have to look like you belong here Liam or security will be all over you."

Liam took a few deep breaths.

"I'm okay. What do we need to do next?"

"We need supplies and a travel gurney. Let’s go.”

Riley took them to the supply room and picked up all the supplies Riley specified that they would need to sustain her health while she was in the coma.

"Anything else we need? Liam asked.

"Just me. It's time to go get me."

"We can do this. You're not going to die today Riley."

"I believe you."  Riley's eyes teared up.

"Let's go Leo."

They walked down the hall of the hospital. Leo smiled at a couple of the nurses tipping his glasses, looking a few of them over.

"Leo… stop.."

"No, it's working! Let him be him."

As they neared Riley's room, they heard a bark.  Liam looked up seeing Taylor walk out of a small waiting room, with Chance in tow. Chance jumped in Riley's direction.

"ZIP IT Chance! SIT!"

Chance immediately obeyed sitting at Taylor's feet.

Taylor glanced down at Chance and back up at him, her eyes widened when she realized it was Liam. Both their eyes landed on  the empty gurney Liam was pushing and the hospital scrubs Liam was wearing. Liam put his finger to his lips.  Taylor nodded her eyes welling with tears.

 Wordless at that moment, Taylor knew Liam was trying to save Riley’s life.  

“Save her please.”  Taylor whispered.

Someone behind her got her attention. Taylor quickly whirled around, blocking them from leaving the room.  

"Dad! Can you just stay with me a few more minutes before we go say goodbye?"

Taylor pulled her father back in the room with her and Chance closing the door.

All sighed in relief continuing on to Riley's hospital room.  

"I'll go in first to make sure I'm alone."

Riley peeked in the room first and called for Liam.

"Are you sure about this Leo?"

"Kind of too late to turn back now, don't you think?"

They walked into the room. Riley quickly instructed Liam how to switch her to the portable respirator.  Though Liam was incredibly nervous and had no medical training, he followed instructions perfectly.

"You would make a good doctor Liam."

"Thank you, but I am doing this for you Riley."

Leo finally had the chance to take a glimpse at the woman who had his brother on the verge of risking prison for her. He was stunned.

“Wow. Liam, she’s so beautiful.”  

“She is, but there is so much more to her than physical beauty.  She is everything, that’s why we have to get her out of here.”

“Let’s roll out then!”

Liam and Leo gently transferred Riley over to the travel gurney. Liam gently touched her cheek, which she felt.

The door opened, and a doctor walked in, who looked surprised at the scene.

Riley groaned.  

“Of course they would send Dr. Olsen to do this.  No one else wanted to, I'm sure.  I hate him.  Of course he’d be the one to be preparing to pull the plug on me.”

“What are you doing here?”

“Dr. Olsen….”  Liam stammered.

Leo jumped into action with every lie he could think of starting with their names. Leo flashed his pearly whites at Dr. Olsen and laid on the professional charm.

“Good morning Dr. Olsen, I’m Doctor Alex Shepherd,  

my associate  here, Doctor Dre….. Flowerman and we’re here to take the patient for one last scan to make sure there are no changes to Dr. Brooks brain activity, before heroic measures are discontinued for her.”

“I wasn’t aware this was supposed to be done.”

“Well you apparently haven’t been keeping up with her chart. And for legal reasons, as Dr. Brooks was an integral staff member at this very hospital, we want to be certain this is the right course of action for her.  Everyone is watching how we handle this, and it needs to be handled with kid gloves, wouldn’t you agree, Dr. Olsen?”

When Liam glanced at Riley, she was flabbergasted at  Leo.  Liam knew though that Leo had always been great at thinking on his feet in a tight spot.  Utter chaos was when Leo shined brightest.

“That makes perfect sense, Dr. Shepherd.  I will still need to confirm with Dr. Ramsey though.”

“You can’t let him make that call.”  Riley said softly.  “He’ll call security when he finds out it’s not legit.”  

Liam walked up to Dr. Olsen.

“Dr. Flowerman?”  

“We don’t have time for this.”  

He punched Dr. Olsen square in the face, and he fell to the floor unconscious.

“Damn Liam, I mean Doctor Dre.”

“I’ve always wanted to do that to him.”  Riley said.  

“Can we talk about the names you come up with on the fly Leo?”  

“There’s no time for that, We got to go now.”

When they got out the door, they followed Riley’s directions.  

“Make a left up here, try to keep me as still as you can Liam.  Now another right.”

It was clear sailing at first.  Liam actually thought for a moment they would get out unscaved.  

“What the hell is going on?!?!?!?! Someone call security now, he has my daughter!!!!!”

Liam and Leo picked up the pace, trying to maneuver the gurney at the accelerated speed, but keeping Riley as still as possible.

The first two security guards started chasing them.  

Liam followed Riley’s commands, and Leo followed Liam. 

“Make a right and then immediately another left!!!!” Riley screamed.

They were seamlessly working their way towards the elevator that would get them to the van.

As they passed by the door another security came running down the hall.  

“I got him!  When you get out, just keep going Liam.”

The security guard made a grab for Riley.  

Leo charged that security guard, tackling him, the two of them falling through the open patient room door.  Liam kept running pushing the gurney with Riley in it,  Riley kept pace at his side.  

“Oh no…..Liam….”

He immediately stopped. The sound of Riley's voice scared him.

"What's wrong?"

“One of them  grabbed my breathing tube by accident.”  

“Riley, what do I do?”

“There’s nothing you can do.  I'm dying. I can feel it happening.”

“Fight it please… Don’t leave me.”  

Liam’s attention fell to the heart monitor, as Riley’s heartbeat slowed, the appearance of her spirit was also fading before his eyes.

Riley felt herself slipping away.   She could see it finally.  That white light everyone talked about at the moment of death. Riley wasn't afraid of it anymore. She was almost entranced  by it, and it was the most soothing thing she had ever known, but she felt bad for Liam. Moments flooded her heart of the two of them together and what they could have been. 

“I can’t… It's too strong.  I’m sorry….”

“I’ll breathe for you!!!!” Liam screamed.

Liam rushed forward, to gently touch her face, trying to breathe life back into Riley’s lungs.

But it was too late. Riley’s heart stopped beating and the monitor flatlined.  

Liam was tackled to the floor by security guards.

Riley was touching her lips as her spirit faded away.

"RILEY!!!!!!! SOMEBODY HELP HER!!!! PLEASE HELP HER!!!!"

Leo came running down the hallway with the security guard on his heels still carrying the breathing tube.  He stopped in his tracks realizing there was nothing but silence in the hallway and the sound of a flat lined monitor.  The security guard dropped the breathing tube in shock when he realized his part in what had just happened.

Leo looked down at his brother still being held by security guards.   “Liam…..”

Taylor began to cry, "She's really gone?"

Taylor picked up Chance and put him on the gurney with  Riley.  

"You didn't get a chance to say goodbye to her either boy. I waited, because I didn't think we'd have to."

Chance  gingerly licked Riley's fingers, and  tried to nuzzle his nose under her hand so that it cupped his snout. He rested his body in the empty space on the gurney wedged next to her whimpering softly.

“I shouldn’t have waited.”  Taylor began to cry harder.  No one moved for what felt like an eternity.

Suddenly, Chance sat up in attention, his tail starting to wag, looking at Riley.  

"What is it, Chance?"

There was a beep on the monitor.  Followed by another, and another.

"That's impossible." Dr. Ramsey said.

“What’s happening?”  Jason asked as he neared the gurney to stand by Taylor’s side.

Riley's heartbeat began to strengthen  on the monitor.  Jaiden gasped as Riley began to cough and opened her eyes. 

 Riley's family crowded her hugging her and crying but Liam was still being held on the floor by two security guards.

"Let him go. This wouldn't be happening without him." Taylor responded.

"I'm so glad you're okay, Rye. I would be lost without you here. Don't EVER scare me like this ever again."

Liam jumped up to rush to Riley's side.

"Hey Riley."

"Hello."

Riley looked away from him back to Taylor.

"Riley, it's Liam. You know Liam."

Riley looked at him again. Liam reached out his hand to take Riley's but instead, she immediately pulled  away from him.

Taylor glanced at Liam, he was beginning to see she didn’t know him.

"Riley it's Liam! You don't remember him?"

Riley looked at Liam for a third time. His eyes were almost begging for some kind of recollection of their time together. Her obnoxious singing, their flirting. The smiles, even the emotional moments in tears.

"Riley…." Liam whispered.

But there was nothing inviting in her eyes for him anymore; he was indeed a stranger to her now.

Whatever had happened in the process of putting her back together, made her forget the last several weeks that she and Liam had spent together. She actually forgot him, and how much they meant to each other.

Riley shook her head no again. "I don't remember you. Are we friends?"

Liam’s heart broke. 

 He wanted so much more from her than friendship, and he felt that she had wanted more too, before.

Taylor looked at Liam staring at Riley, and it was painstakingly clear to her that he loved her; In the short amount of time the two had spent together Liam had fallen desperately in love with her older sister.  His actions proved it.  He had acted like a madman trying to save her that day.  And he succeeded.  

"Liam, I'm so sorry."

"I'm just glad she's alright."

Liam took a step back away from her.  

“Are you alright Riley?”

“Just a little confused, and my head hurts a little.  I think I bumped it.”  

Nico came running up the hall.

"RB1! You're okay!!!!"

Her attention left Liam and she focused on Nico.  She smiled at him.

"You know I hate you calling me that."

"You can hate me all you want because you're still here."

"You were here… everyday. I heard you talking to me."

When Nico took Riley's hand, she didn't pull away.

"I was, because I care about you. More than I knew how to express before the accident, and I want to make my intentions clear for you.”

He kissed Riley in front of all of them, and she responded to him.

"Riley no…." Taylor whispered. Taylor regretted looking to see Liam’s response. The look on his face made her heart hurt. Liam was devastated.

“Let’s go Leo.” 

"But Liam…the way you…."

"She doesn't remember me! Let's just go."

"She will though. You have to give her the chance. She'll remember. It can't end like this Liam. It can't."

Riley was smiling at Nico while he talked to her.

"Please let's go."

Liam and Leo headed back to the apartment.

"I can stay, if you want me to stay, Li."

"I'd rather be alone right now."

That night, Liam laid wide awake that night in bed waiting, looking at Riley's picture he had taken from the hospital.

It was all he had left of her.  His alarm went off exactly at 2:24am. Twenty four hours ago to the second he had promised Riley, he would do everything he could to ensure that she would still be alive at this time today. Liam had kept his promise to her. Riley was still alive.

Liam had started to pack his things up. The Brooks' family was honoring the month to month lease by letting him stay in the apartment until the current months' end.  Earlier in the day he had gone by the Bodega and picked up several Tahitian Treats.

He wasn't just humoring Riley when he said he liked the robust drink. Liam really did enjoy the bold fruitiness of the fruit punch flavored soda.  Not to mention it reminded him of Riley. He had put two bottles in the freezer chilling as he waited for his pizza delivery. He knew it was silly, but it almost made him feel like Riley was there with him waiting on the delivery too. She did say pizza was one of her favorite foods.

There was a knock to the door, thinking it was the pizza guy, instead it was Taylor and Chance.

"Hi Liam."

"Taylor! Come in!"

Chance walked up to Liam then collapsed rolling at his feet. Liam crouched down to scratch Chance's belly. Chance wagged his tail.

"He likes you Liam. He knows you."

"He's a good boy."

“I think he understands what you did for her, and he’s grateful too. Just like me.” 

There was an uncomfortable  silence between them.

"You should have stayed Liam. You should come visit her in the hospital."

"She doesn't remember me, Taylor. It's like the price to be paid for her still being here. It hurts, but it's so much better than the alternative. Seeing her not knowing me hurts Taylor."

"That's why you need to be around her, Liam, to give her the chance to remember you.  Her soul hasn't forgotten about you. I look at her and I know. She knows something…someone is missing from her life, but she doesn’t know it’s you."

There was another knock on the door.

"Hold on a sec  Taylor, that's the pizza guy."

Liam came back with a piping hot pizza.

"Taylor, have you eaten? Would you like some pizza?"

"Um, you are asking a pregnant woman if she wants food? The heartburn is so going to be worth it. Hell  yes I could eat!!!"

Before he could even start in that direction, Taylor was already in the kitchen grabbing plates from the cabinet.

"I'm sorry,  I just know where everything is. I'm kind of used to just coming in and making myself at home."

"It's alright, I don't mind.  Would you grab my drink out of the freezer?"

"Sure."

She opened the freezer and giggled.

"She got you too with them?"

"She did."

"Mind if I have the other one then?"

"Sure you can."

Now he was glad he put two bottles in the freezer.

"It's been a while since I have had one of these. We would have burping contests, me and Riley."  Taylor admitted.

"Who won?"

"Riley always, though I think I could give her a run for her money now. This kid has all my bodily functions amped!"

Liam smiled. He had to ask, he couldn't wait any longer.

"So how is Riley?"

"She's up on her feet walking around, talking a lot. Her energy level is really coming back.  They are talking about discharging her soon. She is going to stay with me and Max until….."

"Until I move out. I'm looking for a new place now.  Going by a few properties tomorrow."

"You should come by to see her, Liam."

"He'll be there, and I can’t see what I saw him do the last time, knowing that should be me.” 

"He's not you. If it makes you feel any better, Chance hates Nico. But look at him with you. He loves you."

Liam glanced down at the floor, and Chance was sitting at his feet, looking up at him.

"Don't let him fool you, he's begging for a slice of pizza. Chance loves everyone momentarily when food is involved. Go ahead Liam, I know you want to."

Liam  gave Chance a few of the meatballs off of his pizza which he gobbled up quickly.

“Will you tell me?”

“Tell you what?”  

“About  the weeks you spent with Riley.  That made you willing to risk going to jail in an attempt to save her life?”

Liam nodded and recounted the weeks Riley had been a part of his life, and how he thought they felt about each other.  When Liam was done, Taylor was in tears.

“You love her, and it sounds like she loves you. Go see her Liam, you have to.”  

“Okay Taylor, I’ll go.”

What he had been willing to do for Riley to save her life, didn’t make him as scared as what he was about to do.   Liam  had finally gotten the courage to go see Riley.  He got a small bouquet of  wildflowers for her and  her favorite drink.  Hana saw him walk down the hall towards Riley’s room and she followed him.

Liam was crestfallen when he saw the empty bed, and all of Riley’s things gone.  He felt like it was that night all over again, now almost five months ago, standing out in the rain, ironically still holding a bouquet of flowers for someone he hoped might mean something to him, and he missed his chance again.  He had missed HER yet again.

“We discharged her about two hours ago.”  

“Oh.”  

“I’m sorry she doesn’t remember you.  But you really don’t know how she was with Nico.  I think she should explore this with him.  They could be more than just friends, and he really cares about her.”

‘He’ wasn’t the only one.  Liam handed the flowers to Hana.

“Can you give these to someone that might need them to brighten their day?”

Hana nodded.  She noticed he was carrying a bag, and the color red of the bottles in the bag was unmistakable.

“Thanks.”  Liam walked away.

He had to have known her pretty well, Hana thought.  He had brought Riley her favorite drink.  Even though she wanted Riley to give things a go with Nico as she always secretly shipped them together, now she understood there was truly something about Liam that felt different.

I am intersted to know why your feelings about Wanda are complicated.

And what do you think about Vision?

I guess because I feel like the MCU can't decide if it wants to make her a heroic villain or a villainous hero so it keeps trying to have it both ways. And that mainly manifests into a lack of consequences for her actions or even feeling like she should have consequences. Like in Civil War, she has that line "I can't control their fear. Only my own" and it's supposed to be empowering and "yeah girl, kick his ass!" But like, no. You're an ex-Hydra volunteer with vast power who has cost people their lives. Even if unintentional, take some responsibility over that, hon. It's like when police officers get offended that BIPOC are afraid of them. It's like, consider WHY fam. Consider the history behind that and realize that you do have a responsibility to do your job right so that people aren't terrified you're a force for evil. Also, I'm not going to get into full Accords discourse but at the end of the day, I think of them as superhero gun control and the fact that so many of the Avengers said 'fuck the wishes of 117 countries that are wary of a largely American militarized force and thus want oversight' still doesn't sit well with me in general. I also don't like that her Hydra past was swept under the rug as "she's just a traumatized kid who lost her parents." You still don't join a Nazi organization! And the fact that she mentally violated all of the Avengers (particularly Tony and Bruce) and then was just accepted into their ranks like it was nbd? It's a bit much for me. Particularly since she never got held accountable for her role in creating Ultron (like the narrative said "oh but she lost her brother!" and decided that was enough).

You get hints of this in WandaVision too. Monica mournfully telling Wanda "[the townspeople] will never know what you gave up for them" and Wanda saying it won't change how they see her. It's this moment of "oh it's a shame that Wanda will never be understood" but again, Wanda is responsible for how she got perceived negatively. The idea that it's sad that this whole town of people she victimized (more mental violation, keeping them away from their loved ones, etc.) don't empathize with her loss is just...squicky to me. This Vox article explains that better than I can though.

But all that said, I couldn't help but root for her a lot of the time while watching the show. I finally found myself invested in her and Vision (whose dynamic was, prior to WandaVision, developed mostly off-screen therefore making it hard for me to care). Even as she was doing something so wrong, I got attached to this messy human making an even bigger mess of her grief (I mean, I'm a Tony Stark stan. I love mess). And her powers are so cool. I love witches forever, okay? I'm also still hoping her and Vis get to say "hello" again! I just really hated the spin the show made that her doing the right thing at the end was some big heroic sacrifice instead of just...her not going full villain to keep what she wants.

Also as for Vis himself...I can take or leave him if he's not with Wanda. I'll always have some fondness for him because he's JARVIS' legacy. But also I really miss JARVIS. And for a character that's so powerful, I think the MCU kind of wastes him a lil bit.

Black Excellence 365 Spotlight: Jay Reeves

New Jersey's Jay Reeves is a multi-talented actor, producer, and musician currently starring in Safety on Disney+. Growing up, Jay ranked #9 out of 100 in the Western Region of Underclassmen and went on to play at Pasadena City College before leaving to pursue a career in acting. After experiencing homelessness, Jay went home to regroup, eventually studying acting in New York, and debuting as Shawn Scott on The CW's All-American. Jay took the time to chat with us about the making of Safety, his music, and Black Excellence. Check it out:

Which scene from Safety had the most impact on you as you were filming it, and which do you hope viewers pay the most attention to?

The most impactful scene for me was the scene about the custody of my little brother. I mean, I grew up with a single mother most of my childhood, and placing myself in that circumstance, as Ray, was hard for me. A young man who has to rise to the occasion and take custody of his little brother is a difficult situation on its own. But when you add the stakes of having such a life-altering conversation with your mother, now that is difficult. It took me to a level of vulnerability that I haven’t been able to showcase thus far.

You’ve said that “as content creators [we] have the obligation to hold a mirror up to the world.” What do you hope to reflect?

I hope to reflect honesty at all times. That’s whether I’m playing a fictional character or someone who lives on this earth, because people gravitate towards that, people love to feel. Most importantly, there’s always someone who can relate to the truth, and that’s whether it’s my truth or the truth I live through on the big screen. There’s always someone who can relate to the story at hand, so I just hope to reflect enough honesty so the audience can organically connect.

How does your experience playing football impact your approach to acting roles?

My past experience in athletics helps me keep a level of discipline when it comes to acting. Just like any professional level player, in the NFL or elsewhere, we have to work every day and treat our bodies well. That looks like eating clean, being prepared, and knowing when to rest, and that all starts with self-discipline. You have to wake up every morning and want these things for yourself before the world can see it for you. I wake up at 5 AM every day just like I’m in high school or college again playing ball. I truly believe that’s the level of intensity you should bring as an entertainer, athlete, or whatever your dream is to be.

What music are you working on right now, and can you give us a sneak peek or hint about what you have coming up?

I’m working on an EP between acting gigs, so it’s early on in the process—a hint would be too much of a giveaway. But I am working with the same folks I have in the past, Ashton McCreight and Spencer Nezey. It’s early in the developmental process, but I trust these guys, and I can’t wait to see what we can collaborate on and put together. However, I did drop two EPs on SoundCloud this week, so be sure to tune in!

If your life was a choose-your-own-adventure, what decisions would viewers have to make on an average day?

Luckily, I do have a career where I can choose my adventure daily. Being an actor, I find myself studying and always learning about so many different careers and life decisions. What’s also cool about being a filmmaker is you get to play around with different periods, so I’m not confined to a box or any kind of structure. We get to imagine and break any form of limitation.

When you hear the phrase “Black Excellence,” what or who comes to mind?

When I hear Black excellence, I can’t help but think of Issa Rae and her infamous speech of saying, “I’m rooting for everyone Black,” because that is how I feel. Black excellence goes so deep, and there’s enough success on this earth for us all to be excellent. As a Black man, I hope to one day no longer be confined to just having the label of Black Excellence, but reaching higher and achieving overall human excellence as a Black man. My mother’s side of my family came from Monrovia, Liberia. I am my ancestors’ wildest dream!

How did you find your voice?

I found my voice falling flat on my face. I moved to Los Angeles, but things didn’t work out on my first go-around. I didn’t have money, and I lost my support by making dumb decisions, so I went back home and scraped up every single dollar and sent off the most prayers I think I’ve ever had in my life. Doing so allowed me to dig deep within myself and realize my true potential—but without that moment of failure, I wouldn’t have had my back against the wall to do so. If you’re dealing with fear, I encourage you to face it with faith because that is how I found my voice, and I’m pretty sure it’s how you’ll find yours.

You have the opportunity to ask an all-knowing genie one question. What do you ask?

If I had the opportunity to ask a genie a question, I would ask him what stock is going to short through the roof because then I would just dump all of my investments and savings into that and ride the wave. But that might be illegal for the genie to tell me that. As young people, I believe we need to no longer be consumers of a product but be producers and makers of products.

What advice would you give to young Black talent looking to get their first break in the entertainment industry?

Shoot your shot, reach out to these CEOs and ask them for advice. Don’t be afraid to ask questions…look for information, look for a mentor and work hard. Nothing worth it is easy. And you wouldn’t want it to be easy anyway. The person we become as we follow our dreams and hit the ground or backs against the wall is the true blessing. The success is the cherry on top.

How do you practice self-care?

I take good care of myself, and it’s as simple as that. I eat clean, I work out, and most importantly, I feed my spirit daily. Even if I’m not feeling in the mood, I’ll pray, and I take time to give thanks. I do whatever it takes for me to feel 100% because health is wealth.

as someone now broaching these waters and generally interested, could you give me any recommendations?

ive fallen into the rabbit hole that is bad buddy- even though I still have no clue how…

and i know for a fact that im enjoying bad buddy.

ive followed like- a scary amount of people since… because im genuinely invested now.

Fell into the Bad Buddy rabbit hole too, huh? Can relate, my friend, can relate. Luckily, you have one of the most delightful fandoms here to keep you company!

Now on to the actual ask part of your ask, I think you just asked one of my favourite questions ever. I live for the day someone requests show recs from me. Which is to say that I have a rec list all ready to go and I’m 110% prepared to answer this. And I’m delighted to be your guide on this journey!

The one thing I’ll note, however, is that I usually personalize my recs to the person I’m giving them to (I take reccing very seriously) so, since I don’t know your personal tastes outside of Bad Buddy and potentially Bad And Crazy, I’ll just be recommending some of my own personal favourites and shows that I think are especially good for gently introducing you to the BL genre. I hope that’s okay! And don’t worry, I’ll keep this as spoiler-free as possible (nothing past the first ep of the show, pinky promise).

First thing’s first, you’ll see as you start to watch more Asian LGBT dramas that the style and tropes vary from country to country. I’m personally more a fan of Thailand’s cheery, lighthearted approach to BL/GLs but I know some people prefer the more natural displays of physical and sexual intimacy (passionate kisses, sex scenes, etc.) in Taiwanese shows. Korean’s style is typically quite pretty but they struggle to pull off any form of physical intimacy (lots of cringey kisses, lemme tell ya). Pinoy BLs are… harder to describe? Still a good time though. And I haven’t seen enough Vietnamese shows to find any I’ve personally liked so far (the only theme I’ve noted with Vietnam is camerawork and audio that makes me crinkle my nose, the directing isn’t my favourite but I think that might be due to low production budgets). But my biggest deciding factors in choosing which shows make it to my rec list are: a romance that’s genuinely easy to root for (healthy, believable, eager, consenting), entertaining to watch, and no creepy consent issues (tragically quite common and I’m very picky about this, which really cuts down the list).

So I’ll give you at least one example of each. And you only mentioned BL so I kept the list strictly to BLs but feel free to shoot me another ask if you want GL or just plain ole Asian drama recs too! My list for those is much smaller but I do have a list if you’re interested.

A Tale of a Thousand Stars

Origin: Thailand

My Thoughts: Personally my go-to when I introduce my friends to BL. The story is compelling, I love all of the characters and their development, it’s one of few BL I can think of that doesn’t have a side pairing and I think that’s a good thing, it helps you focus on the main ship. Beware though, it’s a tad angsty. (But with a happy ending!)

Vague as Possible Synopsis: After receiving a heart transplant from a volunteer teacher, Tian decides to follow in her footsteps and become a teacher in the village where she taught. There he meets the villagers, who are slow to trust, and Forest Ranger Phupha, a well-intentioned pain in the ass.

2Gether

Origin: Thailand

My Thoughts: I absolutely love the premise and the tropes in this one! It has fake dating, it has all the music tropes (I’m a huge sucker for music tropes), and it’s just really fun. (I have my gripes with this show, especially the second half but I won’t get into it. This is a rec list, not a pros and cons list. If someone wants my in-depth Things I Liked vs Things I Didn’t for this show though, let me know, I could ramble for days.) And I would highly recommend watching the second season. I haven’t finished it but I’ve heard that it fixes some of the things I didn’t love from the first season (and it’s directed by Bad Buddy’s director, our Lord and Saviour, P’aof).

Vague as Possible Synopsis: Tine, our lovely protag, is sick and tired of this guy who keeps flirting with him so he enlists the (initially reluctant) help of a musician named Sarawat to ward the guy off by fake hitting on Tine.

Cherry Magic

Origin: Japan

My Thoughts: Wholesome fluff to end all other wholesome fluff. The main pairing is to die for, they’ll give you cavities. And I love the little friend group they establish.

Vague as Possible Synopsis: An office-set romance in which our adorkable protagonist Adachi wakes up one day to find out he can read minds. Oh and also accidentally finds out through said mind-reading ability that his superstar coworker has a huge crush on him. Cue shenanigans.

Light On Me

Origin: Korea

My Thoughts: Pretty. I already said Korean dramas were pretty, right? This. This is what I mean (also Color Rush but I have mixed feelings about that show). Just the way it’s shot is really nice. It’s also wholesome and the characters are very loveable and their development is top tier!

Vague as Possible Synopsis: Lifelong loner-by-choice Taekyung decides one day that he wants to make friends. His teacher recommends joining the student council where he’s met with… mixed responses.

Be Loved in House: I Do

Origin: Taiwan

My Thoughts: The bestie quartet is amazing, I love them. Good main ship, two good side ships. There’s a cat so gold star for that.

Vague as Possible Synopsis: The employer of the company Shi Lei works at quits and is replaced by Yu Zhen, whose first decree upon walking into the office on his first day is that employees are strictly prohibited from dating. This doesn’t sit well with the employees in question so Shi Lei sets out to convince his new boss to abolish the rule.

Gaya Sa Pelikula

Origin: Filipino

My Thoughts: Really like the rep and discussion of queerness in this one. And the use of the fake dating trope. This is probably my least favourite on this list but it’s probably also my favourite Pinoy BL. Although #My Day was cute (if a little read: very weird).

Vague as Possible Synopsis: Well. There actually isn’t much plot to this one. Pretty much all you need to know is that it’s fake dating (my beloved).

Manner of Death

Origin: Thailand

My Thoughts: This one is probably my all-time personal favourite (aside from Bad Buddy which is shaping up to be one of - if not THE - top rec on my list) because murder mysteries are my cup of tea. However, it’s probably not for everyone (but you did mention an interest in Bad and Crazy so I’m assuming that means you like crime shows?) and it’s definitely not typical for the BL genre. I probably wouldn’t watch this first. But if you’re a fan of murder mysteries and crime shows like I am, this is a definite rec (maybe watch a few others on this list first though).

Vague as Possible Synopsis: Dr. Bunn is new to town. He’s a coroner. There’s a murder. There’s a mystery. Boom. Done. That’s the plot. (Hire me, MyDramaList, aren’t my summaries amazing?)

A few others I liked for some reasons, disliked for other reasons, but wouldn’t not rec:

My Engineer (Thai, cute as hell side ships, personally not a fan of the main ship)

My Gear and My Gown (Thai, convoluted but sweet romance, pacing issues)

Hello Stranger (Pinoy, cute, I’m just not a fan of the video-call format)

#My Day (Pinoy, really weird but good, takes you some time to warm up to the love interest)

I Told Sunset About You (Thai, it’s amazing, there’s just one thing that rubbed me the wrong way, but I know it’s very well-loved in the BL fandom and I generally quite liked it)

Kieta Hatsukoi

Origin: Japan

My Thoughts: Okay, I hesitate to recommend things before they’re done airing but Bad Buddy and Keita Hatsukoi have been my two exceptions to this rule. As with Cherry Magic, this is wholesome and heartwarming as hell, the friendships, the romances, it’s all adorable.

Vague as Possible Synopsis: Due to a misunderstanding, Aoki’s desk neighbour ends up thinking he has a crush on him and he can’t deny it without throwing his friend under the bus. Shenanigans ensue.

I hope this won’t come as a surprise but from what I can tell, it looks like Bad and Crazy is going to be an implied but not canon m|m (censored) romance. It’s listed as a bromance. (I don’t know if you were expecting it to be a BL, personally I’m probably going to watch it anyway.) But! If you want to watch an upcoming crime show that’s actually a BL, I’m personally suuuuper hyped for Not Me, which comes out this Sunday! The trailer’s on YouTube if you want to give it a look. Other upcoming BL shows on my to-watch list that you might be interested in - if you prefer watching things as they air - are Kinnporsche (presumably airing in April) and Enchanté (presumably airing… eventually? some people have been guessing it’ll take over Bad Buddy’s time slot so we’ll see), trailers also on YouTube.
