tgcf book spoilers, but one mu qing and xie lian snippet that I think about a lot is this one, at the start of xie lian’s second banishment when he’s surprised to hear mu qing being described as generous and kind:

as opposed to this memory from before his first ascension when mu qing started giving out cherries to the kids in the city:

I think it just really goes to show 1) how deeply mq’s actions truly affected xl and what he thought of him, but also 2) just how different mq and xl are fundamentally in the way that they think and approach things.

I don’t have a lot of commentary on xl that hasn’t already been said, but bc we get the story from xl’s pov, we see a lot of mq’s actions being framed as selfish or suspicious (which is fair, bc again, we know how much his actions hurt xl), but we also see a lot of misconstrued kindness, like in book 8 where it’s revealed that he knocked out fx in order to save him. it’s also pretty obvious how much mq still cares abt xl, with how quickly he volunteers as fu yao and the lengths he goes to protect him when he deems hc a threat, so I also think it’s very likely that mq leaving the trio first was exactly what he said it was — that he thought becoming a junior official, ascending quickly, would be the best way to take care of not just his mother, but also xl, fx, the king and queen, and himself, and so in a way, him leaving was him acting on his kindness. but ofc it doesn’t work out, and he spends the next 800 years fighting w/ fx about it, defending himself, his decisions, and his kindness, and nitpicking the accuracies of his statues while he himself remains completely misunderstood by the two people he probably cares abt the most.

and idk, I guess I just think that’s probably a really lonely way to spend 800 years.

maybe i’m in the minority but i think the ending overall felt positive… yes it was painful yes it hurt… but i saw that as shiv and roman realizing, in time to save kendall from himself, that there was no winning. nobody was there to save logan from his descent into evil, but kendall still had roman and shiv there to call bullshit on everything in the moment that kendall became closest to turning into logan. now they’re free — and it’s not an easy pill to swallow for kendall, but he walked away from the water in the end.

I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it but?? I really liked it mostly??? #It starts pretty small scale focused on the MC & slowly unravels the wider worldbuilding and narrative elements in a really interesting way #The first chapter or two I assumed it was typical high fantasy but then it’s like. oh this is a modern city. with emails and stuff. #The pacing is a bit weird - it’s quite meandering and also pivots significantly in the second half. tbh I’m still ????? about the ending lm #but also I am happy to float through on vibes. #and there’s some elements (like the doors that become….not that relevant) that I want to know more about. (as an aside - I saw someone say #that it’s a very clear retelling about Buddha’s son? which idk enough about but probably could give a deeper context to a lot of it) #writing style is kinda detached from the MC but also there is a reason for this that makes sense with the twist near the end! #which is a kind of twist i LOVE. Maybe I wish it had been emphasised a bit more over the story though? unsure. #I thought his mother's story was interesting also - you think she's an terrible parent just there for background context at the start but #then when she tells her story it's like ohh there's more context here. #also I hesitate to just say ‘if you like the spear cuts-- you should read this’ because I think the elements that are similar are done in a #kinda different way and might disappoint you if you’re expecting it to be the same as spear….but regardless the sort of dreamy writing #rich world; narrative with fantasy but also modern day elements; some of the writing style; mlm MC (tho not a romance) #idk. it will definitely not work for everyone but I enjoyed it overall #also it is full of queerness #bisexual books

#I have so many thoughts on this episode #I like what they’re doing with Carol and Brad and Rachel and Dana #The standout characters of this season tbh which I like a lot- I’m glad they’re focusing on previously underrepresented characters #Especially Rachel and Dana! I’m happy that Rachel is being moved away from just kinda being a one note “woke girl” stereotype and I’m glad #Dana is getting more development as a character rather than just being there to react to the other characters #I also love the development of Dana and Poppy this episode! I love how Danny did that! Poppy’s initial resistance to Dana bc she feels #Threatened by her and like she needs to stick to Hera #But then actually being able to admit that she likes Dana’s game and afterwards feeling really bad about herself and breaking down bc she #Had to admit that the thing she was working on just wasn’t that fun #And that she was just following in Ian’s footsteps because she wanted to feel the way he does about MQ #and Dana being the one to pull her away from wanting to just.
