“The Fourth Phase of the exam has just ended. Will the applicants please return to the starting point at once? You will be given one hour of extra time. If you do not return during this time, you will fail the exam. Furthermore, you are not allowed to exchange tags after reaching the starting point. Anyone caught swapping tags will be disqualified.”
After an hour had passed the woman from before left the boat.
“Now we will check the tags of everyone here!”
The names of the unfamiliar faces are revealed.
Pokkle was the boy with brown hair, and Bodoro was the name of the old man.
“Ah, only six applicants have passed? Hmm…”
The group of four, including (Name), Leorio, Kurapika, and Gon appeared just in time.
“Gon, (Name)!” Killua yelled out, his face lighting up.
“Ah, four more arrive at the last second! And now for the last few members…”
She introduced them and announced what tags they had acquired, some of the applicants raising an eyebrow at (Name)’s blank card.
“These 10 applicants have passed the fourth Phase of the exam!”
—————
They board the airship again, (Name) staying with the three boys, exhaustion starting to kick in.
“Pathetic. I needed the three of you to do everything for me during the Fourth Phase. I promise I’ll return the favor. So... thanks.” Leorio sighed, not meeting any of the other three’s eyes.
The speaks roar to life, and the sound of Beans voice fills the air. “I have an announcement for all applicants. The chairman wishes to interview the remaining candidates.”
“Interview?”
“When your number is called, please come to the first reception room, on the second floor. Then, we will start with #44, Hisoka.”
Gon grimaced at the mention of Hisoka’s name.
———-
“Well, have a seat.”
Hisoka stared at the chairman, unmoving. “Don’t tell me this is the exam’s final phase.”
“It may be related. I’ll just ask a few questions to satisfy my curiosity.”
Hisoka’s grinned widened and he sat down.
“First, why do you want to become a Hunter?”
“I’m not particularly interested in becoming a Hunter but…”
“But?”
“A Hunter license can be very useful.”
“Oh, any examples?”
“For example, Hunters usually can’t be punished when they kill someone.”
“I see. Then we’ll move on to the next question. Which of the other nine applicants are you keeping an eye on?”
“#99 and #406.”
“Oh.”
“#405 is also on my radar, but it’s those two I’m keeping an eye on. I would love to take them on one day, although he might not like that…” Hisoka chuckles, imagining the look on Illumi’s face if he found out he was the reason for (Name)’s death.
“One last question. Which of the other 9 applicants would you least want to fight?”
“That would be #405. Though #99 and #406 is up there. If you’re asking whom I least want to fight at this moment, my answer would be #405.”
“Ah, I understand.”
“I should mention that the one I most want to fight at this moment… is you.”
His bloodlust was potent, but not enough to faze Netero.
“Yep, nice job. You’re excused.”
Next was Pokkle.
“I’m watching out for #404. He looks like the most balanced applicant. I definitely don’t want to fight #44. To be honest, I doubt I can beat him.”
Killua was called in after. “Has to be Gon and (Name). He’s the same age as me, and her…” he shakes his head. “She’s someone special. I don’t want to fight #53. I don’t think it’d be a very interesting fight.”
“I’ve got my eye on #44. He has a real presence. #405 and #99 are still children. I couldn’t bring myself to fight them.” Bodoro answered.
“#99 and #406. #44 and #406.” Illumi’s answer was short and sweet.
“Who am I watching out for? #44, Hisoka. A lord happens, so I’ve been watching him. I can’t choose one out of #99, #403, #404, and #406.” Gon said, smiling.
Hanzo was next. “It has to be #44. He’s the most dangerous one here. And #44 is the one I want to fight least, along with #406. I just don’t think she would be much of a fight.”
“I’m watching #405 and #406 for positive reasons, and #44 for negative reasons. If I’m given ample reason, I’ll fight anyone. If not I’d prefer not to fight anyone… however I’d be most affected if I had to fight #406. She’s kind.” Kurapika pushed a strand of hair behind his ear, a smile on his lips.
“#405 and #406. I owe them both, and I hope that they pass the exam. So I’m hoping I don’t have to fight either of them.”
The last applicant to join Netero for an interview was (Name), who looked rather nervous.
“Please sit, Miss (Name).”
She did as told, playing with the fabric of her skirt as she did. “Mr. Netero, I’m glad I get to see you again. Have you been well?”
His eyes widened slightly. Not a single one of the applicants had asked him a question like that in his many years of being an examiner.
“I’m doing fine, you’re kind to ask me. Are you doing okay, Miss (Name)?”
She looked up from her skirt, and nodded. “Yes, I’m doing great! I’m just surprised I’ve made it this far. They say most rookies fail the exam in the first stage.”
He nods, picking up his pen. “I have a few questions for you. First, why do you want to become a hunter?”
“I want to support my family and find a missing person. Though I guess missing isn’t the right word, I just can’t find him”
“Okay, who would are you watching out of the other 9 applicants?”
“Hmm, I would say I’m watching #44 and #301, for very different reasons.”
“Okay, and which of the 9 would you least like to fight?”
“Oh, that’s easy. #301 along with #405, #403, #404, and #99 respectively. Oh, I guess #44 too, but I would be okay fighting him if it meant Gon and Killua didn’t have to. He creeps me out!”
Netero wrote down her answer, a smile threatening to pull at his lips. She was kind, just as Kurapika had said. “That’s all. You can leave now.”
(Name) stood, brushing off her skirt. Before she left, she gave Netero a big smile. “Thank you for this opportunity, I’ll make sure to pass!”
He couldn’t help but grin back.
——————
(Name) left the room and ran the the bathroom to shower. She beamed under the warm water, sighing contentedly as it washed away the dirt and grime from her past week of being outdoors. She made sure to wash out her clothes as well. Thankfully the airship had a washer and dryer.
After her shower, (Name) joined Kurapika and Gon in the hallway, a towel holding back her damp hair.
(Name) sat on the window ledge, kicking her feet. Kurapika and Gon began speaking.
“Gon.”
“Hmm?”
“Did something happen during the Fourth Phase? When we met up, you were acting a bit strange. And you’ve been somewhat subdued since we left Zevil Island.”
“My target was Hisoka.”
Kurapika and (Name) both turned to look at him, (Name) clutching her wrist at the mention of his name. “I waited for the perfect chance and stole his tag, but someone else was tailing me, and he got me with a poison dart. Soon after, Hisoka took back his tag from the person who got me, and he left it with me. He said that I owed him now.”
“Hisoka said that?”
“I told him I didn’t need his help and he sent me flying. I was so mad that I couldn’t do anything against him…”
Tears formed in his eyes and fell from his cheeks, dropping onto the window ledge. (Name) held herself back from hugging him, knowing that if she did it would only make him feel worse. He didn’t need her pity, he just needed her to be there. He quickly dried his tears, smiling again.
“After that, I was pretty miserable and lonely. I felt so helpless. I wanted company… I wanted to help someone. I guess. That’s why I was looking for you three.”
“Gon.”
“Hm?”
“Leorio and I have only been able to make it this far because of you. We’re truly grateful.”
(Name) agrees, ruffling Gon’s hair.
“I’d also like to thank you two.”
(Name) has deepened her bond with her friends, and the 10 remaining applicant are about to begin the exam’s Final Phase.
—————
10 applicants: (Name), Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, Pokkle, Bodoro, Gittarackur, Hanzo, and Hisoka, head to the Final Phase, having passed the exam’s Fourth Phase.
“Well, ladies and gentlemen, get plenty of rest? This hotel is owned by the Hunter Exam Selection Committee. The place is all yours until the battles have concluded.”
A man in a suit rolls a board covered in cloth in as Netero continues. “For the Final Phase, we will be holding a one-on-one tournament.”
He pulls off the fabric to reveal the lineup.
“So only the last person standing passes?”
“No. One win is all you need to pass.”
Gon gasps. “Just one win?”
Leorio sighs, “then in this tournament…”
“The winners are removed from the competition, while the losers continue up the bracket. In other words, the person who finishes at the top will not pass. Does everyone understand now?”
Hanzo nods. “So you’re saying that only one person will fail.”
“Exactly. Now here is the bracket.”
The applicants look over the bracket, (Name) wincing at who she would have to fight.
“Impressive right? After all, everyone has at least two chances to win.”
Pokkle tilted his head at the pairings. “But some people, like #294 and #405 get five chances.”
“Why didn’t you use a balanced bracket?” Asked Bodoro.
“A question that must be on everyone’s mind. The bracket was assembled based on your performances throughout the entire exam. Those who performed better received more chances.”
Killua raised an eyebrow. “That doesn’t sound right. Can you explain how you scored our performances?”
“Hm. No!”
“Why not!!”
“Haha, your scores are classified information, so I can’t tell you everything. But I can explain our methods.”
The applicants held their breath, nervous about the explanation.
“First, we consider three major criteria. Physical strength, mental strength, and overall impression. For physical strength, we use an aggregate of agility, flexibility, endurance, and perception. For mental strength, we use an aggregate of resilience, adaptability, judgement, and creativity. However, this information is only used as a reference point. After all, you were strong enough to advance to the Final Phase. However, we are most concerned with your overall impression. This refers to any intangible factors not previously mentioned.”
He chucked. “You could consider this an evaluation of your potential as a Hunter. And we also incorporate the opinions of your peers. That was our process.”
Netero continued, glancing between each applicant. “The battle rules are quite simple. Weapons are allowed. No cheating. If your opponent admits defeat, you win. However! If you kill your opponent you will be immediately disqualified. All remaining applicants will pass, and the exam will end. Are we clear?”
The chairman was met with silence.
“Then we shall begin the exam’s Final Phase.”
——————
Gon and Hanzo were up first. The boy leaned down to tie his shoes and Hanzo cracked his knuckles. (Name) watched on nervously. Illumi noted that she seemed worried for the boy and stowed that information away for later.
“The first match is Hanzo versus Gon. Please step forward!”
The referee stands in the distance, allowing the two to enter the ring. Gon watches Hanzo with his brown eyes, only looking away to glance at his friends and give them a reassuring smile.
“I will serve as the referee. My name is Masta. Best of luck.”
“Hey, good to see you again.” Hanzo greets Masta. warmly. “You we’re trailing me during the Fourth Phase.”
“You noticed?”
“Naturally… I’m assuming each applicant was assigned an examiner for the Fourth Phase. Well, I’m sure everyone noticed.”
(Name) gasped, wrapping her arms around herself. She’d bathed several times during the Fourth Phase, feeling safe enough having Leorio and Kurapika make sure no one came to peek, but now she wondered if she’d been giving a free show to an examiner the entire time.
“You have my thanks. My rank was higher because your reports on me were accurate. Though the outcome was never in question!” Hanzo continued.
“Y-yes…”
“Moving on… I have a question for you.”
“What is that?” The referee asked.
“We only win if our opponent surrenders, correct? It doesn’t count if we knock them unconscious, no TKOs allowed either.”
“Yes, that is correct.”
(Name) was becoming uneasy. Hanzo sighed, glancing at Gon.
‘I see. This one could be difficult.’
Gon glared back, his gaze unwavering. ‘He looks tough, but we should be even in terms of speed and strength. I can use my speed to keep on the move until I get an opening.’
“Now then, it’s time to begin.”
(Name) teetered on her tippy toes, her anxiety building. “Beat his ass Gon!”
“Begin!”
Gon ran forward, past Hanzo. ‘Put some distance between us…’
Before he could think of his next step, Hanzo was next to him. “You must be confident in your legs. You have my respect.”
Hanzo landed a hit on the base of his neck, causing Gon to gasp out. His vision was blurry and we was on the floor instantly.
“You did well for a kid.”
Hanzo stood over him. “Well, this would already be over if it were a normal fight… Here, wake up.”
He picked the boy and pressed his back against his knees cracking it. “You must feel terrible. I hit you hard enough to make your brain bounce around. Do you understand? You have no chance against me. Might as well give up now.”
Gon groaned. “N-no way!”
Hanzo delivered another hit causing Gon’s head to spin. “Think carefully. If you surrender now, you’ll still be in decent shape for your next fight. There’s no reason to be stubborn. Just surrender.”
“Never gonna happen!”
Another hit, this time to his stomach. Gon doubled over, and (Name) gripped Kurapika’s sleeve so tight she thought it might tear.
“Surrender.”
Hanzo had no mercy on the child, glaring down at him. Gon slowly rose, on his hands and knees, then stood. Hanzo delivered another hit, causing his knees to buckle.
“Gon, don’t be stupid! You’ll still have another chance! You should-“
“Leorio!”
Kurapika held onto (Name)’s hand, visibly shaking. “If you were in Gon’s position, would you surrender?”
“Hell no! That guy thinks he’s hot stuff…”
“Gon feels the same way!”
“I know! I know that… but there isn’t any other choice.”
“You’re contradicting yourself but I understand how you feel.”
The three winced when he was struck again, flying across the floor.
————
“It’s been three hours.” Pokkle said, glancing over at (Name). Tears flowed freely from her eyes, her nails dug so deep into her palm that blood dropped onto the floor. Gon was in a heap, blood streaking across the marble.
“There’s nothing left for him to vomit.”
Illumi noticed Pokkle looking at (Name) and sent him a glare. Kurapika tried to console her by pulling her close, but it only made her sob. “Gon, please…”
“Get up.” Hanzo looked down at the broken child, his patience fading. Leorio looked close to exploding.
“Enough already, I’m gonna kill you! I’ll fight you in his place!”
Hanzo glanced between Leorio and (Name) his gaze softening ever so slightly at the woman’s tears. “If you can’t take it, leave. It’s only going to get worse.”
“What was that?!”
Several referees ran in front of Leorio, blocking his path. “No one may interfere in a one-on-one match. If you step in, Gon will be the one disqualified.”
Leorio growled, biting his lip so hard it bled.
“It’s okay, Leorio, (Name). This is… nothing…”
He slowly lifted his head to meet their eyes. “I… I can still fight.”
Hanzo kicked Gon’s legs out from under his feet and pulled his arm behind his back. “I’m going to break your arm.”
The four and Hisoka startle at this revelation. (Name) starts to mindlessly walk forward, but is pulled back by Kurapika.
“I’m not joking around, so give up. Surrender.”
Gon took a moment to breathe.
“NEVER!”
CRACK
“He really broke his arm.” Pokkle remarked, a bit surprised.
“There you go. You can’t use your left arm anymore.”
Leorio’s teeth grated together so tightly that you could almost hear them breaking.
“Kurapika, don’t try to stop me. If that bastard does anything else to Gon… sorry Gon, but I can’t stop myself.”
“Me? Stop you? Don’t worry, there’s no chance of that happening.” Kurapika’s eyes burned a bright red behind his contact lenses.
While the two talk, something starts to change within (Name). Illumi and Hisoka are the first to notice, then the examiners.
‘Oh? How interesting!’ Netero thinks, his eyes now locked on (Name)’s form. Her eyes are wide and wild, her breathing shallow.
‘Is she…’
Illumi approaches her, shock apparent on his face. Her aura was no longer slowly leaking away like it did with most non-nen users, it was beginning to be controlled.
‘She’s awakened her nen!’
(Name) stepped forward, her legs shaky. “I don’t think I can wait. He’s… he’s hurt. Gotta…”
Her aura flickers, starting to leak out rapidly as she loses control. Illumi barely manages to catch her when she falls. Menchi runs over, an excited look on her face.
“This girl… she has potential.”
—————
(Name) awakes just in time for her match. She had been sleeping with head head resting on Menchi’s lap. She startled, immediately standing and looking around. Her suddenly standing caused her to double over and cough up blood.
“Easy does it, #406. You passed out. Your friend won his round and is currently in the infirmary healing.”
Kurapika and Leorio were immediately at her side, Kurapika pushing back her hair as she coughed up more blood.
“(Name) what happened? You just fell over all of a sudden.”
She shook her head, holding a hand to her temple. “Don’t know, I had the urge to help Gon and felt like my skin was being pricked by needles, and then I felt like something left my body, all at once. As if I was drained of all my energy…”
She leaned against Leorio, huffing. “Can you help me into the ring?”
He gripped her arm, his face pale. “(Name), I don’t think you’re in the right state to-“
“I’ll do it myself then.”
She pulled away and stumbled into the ring, holding herself up as much as possible.
“The next match is (Name) versus Gittarackur! Please step forward.”
The two entered the ring, (Name) giving Gittarackur a weak smile. “Hoped it didn’t have to come to this. I won’t be-“
She bent over to cough more blood onto the ground, holding her stomach. “Holding back.”
“Is anyone going to stop her? She shouldn’t be fighting.” Pokkle exclaimed, watching the girl stumble.
“She can handle herself, probably better than you.” Hisoka claimed, grinning down at the shorter man.
“Ready, begin!”
(Name) readied herself, holding up her dagger. Illumi’s heart rate skyrocketed at the sight of it. He’d given her that as a gift years ago, and now she was using it. He was flattered.
“Are you even fit to fight, girl? Why don’t you just give up and try again next round? Or do you want a repeat at what happened to your little friend?”
He appeared right next to her, effortlessly disarming her. She gasped, and he pinned her to the ground, a leg between hers.
“Don’t you dare hurt her!” Leorio yelled, having to be restrained by three referees. Kurapika was barely holding himself back. He knew that she wasn’t stupid enough to continue fighting, he knew but…
“I’m not giving up that easy.”
At this Gittarackur’s hands drifted from her wrists to her shirt, pulling her up by her collar until he was standing and she was at eye level.
“I’ve killed stronger men and women than you, (Name). Don’t push your luck.”
He slammed her into the floor, causing the breath to leave her lungs. She cried out in agony when his foot rested on her chest, pressing down just hard enough to hurt, but not enough to break her ribs. Yet.
“If you pass this exam, you might be called in to do very dangerous jobs. You could lose be seriously injured, even lose your life.”
He hated seeing her in so much pain, her hands gripping at his boot to try and push him off.
“I don’t care. If I can keep my family afloat and find my friend, I don’t care!”
She finally found the strength to push him off, crawling forward to reach her dagger.
“Stubborn girl.”
Before she could reach it, he kicked her in the stomach, sending her flying into the wall.
For 5 minutes, (Name) remained unconscious. Killua was beginning to lose his cool, his nails sharpening to points.
“Just give up, (Name). You aren’t built like Gon, one more hit could kill you!”
‘Listen to him (Name).’ Illumi thought, biting his cheek. ‘I can’t stand to see you like this.’
She pushed herself up, her legs barely able to handle her weight. “If I can’t handle this, then I don’t deserve to pass.”
She raises her fists, her nose bleeding.
“Come and fight me, like a man.”
Illumi stops, staring down at that mouse of a girl. She didn’t flinch under his gaze, instead squaring up to bestie her ability.
She was weak physically, but her will was strong. Hisoka watches on, his interest absolutely peaked.
Illumi rolls his eyes, and stepped forward. (Name braced herself for an attack, but he only flicked her forehead. “Fine. You win.”
(Name) blinks, looking up at the man in confusion. “I win?”
“Yes. You’ve bored me, now run along. The next match will be starting soon.”
The referee called the match, and (Name) limped away. She was scolded harshly by her companions, Killua having to turn away to hide his tears.
“Stupid, you could have died. You probably have broken ribs.”
She smiled, ruffling his hair. “Sorry for worrying you.”
The next fight was Killua and Pokkle, but as soon as the fight began, Killua walked away. Confidently, he declared…
“Sorry, but I’m not interested in fighting you.”
He must of felt that he could win his next match. However, Leorio requested that the sixth match be postponed while Bodoro recovered from his injuries. So Killua and Gittarackur fought first.
“Kick his ass for (Name)’s sake!” Leorio yelled out, tending to (Name) as he did. He’d assessed that she needed professional medical attention, but the stubborn girl refused to leave. She wished to finish watching the matches, so Leorio helped her the best he could with his medical knowledge.
“Begin!”
That was when Killua made a fatal mistake. He walked forward, his mind halfway clouded by anger for the injuries Gittarackur had dealt (Name), and halfway ready to get it over with.
“It’s been a long time, Kil.”
Gittarackur starts to pull out the golden/yellow needles that stuck out of his head and shoulders. Killua watched on in confusion as the man’s face started to shift, slowly revealing that the man before him was not who he seemed.
Killua’s face paled when the man’s long black hair fell gently to his waist. He looked down at him with black eyes.
“B-brother…”
—————
(Name) felt an intense ache in her chest, and she couldn’t tell if it was the broken ribs or her strange attraction to the man in the ring. She couldn’t quite place how she felt, but something inside her stirred.
“Hey.”
Illumi’s gaze drifts to (Name) for just a moment, a bit proud to see her cheeks flushed at his appearance.
“Killua’s brother?”
“He used those needles to change the shape of his face?”
(Name) whimpered, holding her head in her hands. “Hurts.”
There was an intense throbbing when she tried to delve into her mind to figure out why she was reacting this way to the man who had just brutally attacked her. Why did she want to reach out to him? Hold him?
“I heard that you cut up mom and Milluki.”
“I guess…”
Illumi tilted his head. “Mom was crying.”
Leorio scoffed. “Anyone would cry if their son did that to them.”
“Tears of joy.”
Leorio fell over, barely missing (Name) she cried out, rolling away. “Hey, watch where your going!”
“She was so happy to see that you’d grown up. But she was worried about you leaving home, so she asked me to check yo on you. What a coincidence. I didn’t know you wanted to be a Hunter. I’m trying to get a license for my next job.”
Killua looked down, refusing to make eye contact with his older brother. “I don’t really want to be a hunter. I just felt like taking the exam.”
“I see. That’s a relief. Then I have some advice for you.”
The room grew tense, (Name) gripping onto Kurapika’s sleeve as her nose began to bleed.
“You’re not cut out to be a Hunter. You were born to be… a killer.”
Killua trembled.
“You’re a puppet of darkness, without passion. You don’t want anything or wish for anything. As one who lives in the shadows, you can only feel pleasure when people die. That’s how dad and I raised you. What would you accomplish by becoming a hunter?”
“True. I don’t desire to become a Hunter. But… I do have something I want….”
“You don’t.”
“I DO!”
Illumi was slightly taken aback by his brothers words, but stayed stone faced.
“There are some things I really want.”
Illumi hummed. “Tell me what it is you want.”
Killua blinked, meeting his brothers gaze for just a moment. He stayed silent, looking at the ground.
“What’s wrong? There’s nothing you really want, is there?”
Killua bit his lip. “That’s not it! You have something you want too!”
This caused Illumi to pause, his eyes automatically drifting to (Name) again. Killua caught this, whispering. “You still love her.”
Illumi’s eyes widen ever so slightly, but he ignores his brother. “We’re talking about you, not me.”
“I want to become friends with Gon… I’m sick of killing people. I want to become friends with Gon and live a normal life…”
“That’s impossible.”
(Name) stands with the help of Kurapika.
“You’ll never be able to make friends. Your only concern when you meet someone is whether you should kill them. That’s how you were trained.”
“That’s not how you raise a child!” (Name) shouts, the effort causing her to fall into a coughing fit.
“You just don’t know how to classify Gon because he’s too dazzling for your eyes. You don’t actually want to become friends with him.” Illumi tried to ignore her, stealing another glance and barely containing himself when he sees Kurapika holding her up.
“You’re wrong…”
“If you stay with him, you’ll end up wanting to kill him one day. You’ll get the urge to see if you can kill him or not. Because you have the soul of a killer.”
Leorio charges forward. “Killua! I don’t give a damn if he’s your brother. He’s a worthless piece of crap! Don’t listen to him! Just beat the crap out him like usual and win! You want to become friends with Gon? Are you dumb? You are already friends!”
Killua startles. “I’m sure that’s how Gon feels!”
Illumi glances at Leorio, relaxing a bit when he sees that (Name) was leaning against the wall. “Is that so?”
“Hell yeah, idiot!”
“Really… that’s no good. He considers Kil a friend.”
Illumi holds up a finger. “Okay. I’ll kill Gon.”
(Name) straightens, her strength suddenly returning. The other three in her group react with anger, Hisoka and Netero looking on with interest.
“A killer doesn’t need any friends. They’ll only slow you down. Where is he?”
Killua watches his brother walk towards the four at the end of the room. “P-please wait! The match is still-“
Illumi throws a needle at the referee, who begins to shrivel.
“Where is he?” Illumi asks without looking.
“The waiting room over there…”
“Thank you.”
(Name), Kurapika, Leorio, and Hanzo step in front of the door to guard it.
“This won’t do… I need a hunters license to do my job… but if I kill them, I’ll fail and Kil will pass automatically. Oh darn, the same thing will happen if I kill Gon.”
He pouts. “Oh, I know!”
He smiles at the four. “I’ll pass the exam before killing Gon.”
Sweat drips down Killua’s face as he trembles in place.
(Name) sends him a warning glance. “You won’t get past me.”
“Bastard…”
Illumi faces the examiners. “If I wait until after passing the exam, I can kill everyone here and still keep my license, right?”
“Yes, according to the rules.” Netero confirms, his eyes drifting from Illumi to the four that stood guard at the door.
“Hear that, Kil? You have to beat me if you want to save Gon.”
Illumi advanced forward, closing the gap between them step-by-step.
“Will you fight me for your friend’s sake? You can’t do it. Because you’re more worried about whether or not you can defeat me.”
Killua gasped as he neared closer. “And you already have your answer. ‘I’m not strong enough to beat my brother.’ ‘Never fight an enemy you can’t defeat.’ I drilled that into you…”
Killua shook uncontrollably, his breath coming out unsteady.
“Don’t move! If you move an inch, I’ll assume that the fight has begun. And if our bodies make contact, that will also mean the fight has begun. There’s only one way to stop me. You know what that is.”
Killua’s eyes focus on his brothers hand had inches closer to him by the second.
“But don’t forget… if you don’t fight me, your dear Gon will die.”
“Take him out, Killua! We won’t let him kill you or Gon! We’ll take him, whatever it takes! Let him have it!” Leorio exclaimed, but Killua was hardly listening.
Before Illumi’s hand could brush against Killua’s forehead, Killua hung his head low.
“I surrender.”
Illumi glared down at him before smiling. “Oh, that’s good. Then the battles over.”
He laughs, clapping a hand onto Killua’s shoulder. “I lied, Kil. I was lying about killing Gon. That was just a little test. But now, I have my answer.”
Illumi kneeled, pulling Killua down to whisper in his ear.
“You don’t have the right to make friends. Nor do you need friends. You should just listen to dad and me, and do your job as you always have. When the time comes, I’ll tell you to take the Hunter Exam. You don’t need a license yet.”
After he was done, Illumi turned towards the four.
“Now… (Name), won’t you be a dear and save me the trouble from having to capture you and come to me?”
(Name) stared at him in confusion, blinking wildly. “Excuse you, but-“
She could barely process being picked up and tossed over Illumi’s shoulder. Kurapika and Leorio tried to reach for her before he had grabbed her, but they were too late.
“I’m taking her to the infirmary. This girl is mine, you hear? From this moment on she belongs to me, so don’t touch her so carelessly.”
He patted her butt before hitting her just hard enough to knock her out.
Before Kurapika and Leorio could attack, Killua stopped them with a shout.
“Don’t touch him. He’s passed, and won’t hesitate to kill you. He’s.. he probably won’t hurt her.”
The three watched Illumi leave the room, the man tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. He gently caressed her face, his aura relaxing.
“I finally have you, (Name).”
Once they reached the infirmary, he tucked her into the bed, gazing down at her with hazy eyes. He didn’t hesitate to pull back the blanket and slip into bed with her, pulling her flush against his chest, trying to be careful with her injuries.
——————
A few hours later, (Name)’s mysterious friend grips the table he sat at so tight it splintered.
“He did what?”
‘I said he attacked her quite brutally then declared she was his and walked off. Messy, really. She’s recovering in the infirmary, currently.’
The man could barely contain his bloodlust, gripping the phone so tightly the screen nearly cracked.
“Went too far. Gonna kill that man.”
He looked down at his phone screen, trying to calm himself by looking at (Name)’s smiling face.
“Keep close eye on them. Report back if something changes.”
The man hangs up without another word, opening up his messages to (Name)’s contact.
If need me, don’t hesitate. Call.
He sent the message, tapping on the broken table.
“I won’t let him have her.”

List of ✨directorial decisions✨ HxH 1999 is insane for (hunter exam edition):
Episode 1:
- Baby Gon Baby Gon Baby Gon (and Konta)
- okay this is in-line with the manga but still: Mito hates Ging so much that she first lied about Gon’s parents dying in a car crash, then retracted that and told Gon to his face that Ging abandoned him, then admitted at the end of the episode that she forced Ging into a custody battle which. Is objectively the strangest scenario I can imagine.
Episode 2:
- Leorio stops Gon from getting kidnapped (by someone implied to be a child tr*fficker) in episode 2 like HWAT?
- Holy shit the knife he uses during the hunter exam is the same one he took from the kidnapper wow
- Also Gon then spends the rest of the episode following him around and being a Disney Princess so like. Good for him.
- Kurapika is just hanging around most of the episode giving off Main Character Vibes and nothing else.
Episode 3:
- 1999 Kurapika design is just *chef’s kiss*
- Seeing Kurapika now as opposed to Yorknew and Dark Continent hits me like a truck
Episode 4:
- Nothing much this episode except Kurapika adopting Gon and being so passive aggressive it’s funny
- Leorio threatening to beat up/kill an old women is… off putting
- They named the eavesdropper “Matthew” and made him even more of a douche.
Episode 5:
- I’m still confused about the needle mark lol. Like how did Leorio see it under all that fur? At least this version gives him more to do during the Kiriko escapade.
- Alright the fist bump between Kurapika and Leorio is cute
Episode 6:
- Killugon height difference my beloved
- KILLUA’S TINY SHORTS
- Gon asks Killua’s name and age first, when in the manga it was vice versa
- Hisoka having a high, playful voice as opposed to his usual moan-tone is strange to say the least
- Tonpa is even uglier than usual
Episode 7:
- Not only is 1999 pushing the gay agenda it is also pushing the Leorio agenda.
- Killua brought bombs to exam because why wouldn’t he
- “Kurapika would you stop looking at me like that”
Episode 8:
- *People getting brutally slaughtered by wildlife*
Kurapika: My goodness
- Hisoka’s first murder spree <3
Episode 9:
- One thing I do appreciate about the 1999 version is the additional focus on the side characters. Comedy like that between Hanzo and Pokkle during the Second Phase helps the world feel more alive and the characters more engaging.
- Hisoka catching fish.png
- Not Killua and Hisoka making the same dish 😭 Hisoka pouting by the river also deserves a mention
Episode 10:
- Gon is so nice like wow.
- I like Menchi! High-strung cooks are pretty normal from what I understand.
Episode 11:
- Tonpa continues to be an annoying dick, though he’s more useless than anything.
- Gon and Killua bonding!
- Killua is such a cocky little shit and Gon is polite even when making trouble and I love that for them
- The girl with a grudge against the Zoldycks is just. Laughable compared to what we know about them later. She’s lucky she ran into Killua out of the bunch.
Episode 12:
- Gon is straightforward and mischievous. Killua is calculating but cocky. It’s a great dynamic that evolves with the show.
- Idk if this is controversial or not but like,, Killua’s assassin mode is cool. Despite the history that comes with it. I like slightly unhinged!Killua a bit more even if soft!Killua is most people’s favorite.
- I love Gon’s hair physics in 1999. IMO It’s too tall in 2011 (most of the time) but 1999 has a nice balance of springyness and length.
- Killua’s character art is so good. I’m in love with the soft spikiness
- Ah yes, the Hunter exam. The time where Gon’s tendency to push himself to the absolute limit in order to demonstrate his worth as a person was just rearing its head and not as utterly self-destructive as it would later become.
- Not Kurapika throwing Leorio under the bus (Menchi) 💀✋
Episode 13:
- Trick Tower my beloathed. On one hand, character interactions and cute dynamics (Kurapika pushing Leorio). On the other, Tonpa and Leorio’s challenge with the prisoners.
- The expressions when Tonpa surrenders 😭
- “Gon is a sociopath” “Hisoka is a psychopath” incorrect and tired. TONPA is fucking crazy like Jesus Christ have you heard this guy monologue?
- Everytime I watch the manacles drop from the prisoner’s hands I always wonder how they avoid their toes being smushed
Episode 14:
- The candle trick challenge always cracks me up. Kurapika and Killua supporting Gon’s decision until they hear his reasoning 💀
- The sound effects they use for character movements KILLS ME. When Majitani cracks his knuckles it’s like a pile of rocks falling down. When he flexed it’s like rubber. I hate it sm even if I love everything else.
- The Scarlet Eyes in 1999 are the shit fr
- Cuarpickt’s ethics strike back
Episode 15:
- Leorio doing cool shit 😳
- “Kurapika, I’ve dealt with the consequences of your pride.” “Leorio…” PLEASE
- Hisoka and Illumi playing cards 😈
- Another shout-out for the little character interactions in 1999, I love them sm
Episode 16:
- Leorio doing uncool shit
- I don’t wanna talk about it
- I will say I like her design a lot better than 2011
- Killua taking the serial killer’s heart here is objectively cooler
Episode 17:
- I LOVE THE TRICK TOWER MONTAGE LMAO
- It’s amazing how much I want to fucking kill Tonpa. Exquisite feelings of hatred.
- Gon suggesting breaking through the wall is like. Defining character moment to me.
- RIP to Killua’s skateboard :(
- Kurapika’s fondness for Gon in this arc is so underrated
Episode 18, 19, & 20:
- YAS BEST FILLER ARC
- So many good character interactions. So many.
- ENGLAND IS CONFIRMED TO EXIST IN HXH?!!
- The ICONIC “what is going on in this hunter x hunter clip” response comment is from these episodes
- Illumi just indulges himself as Gittarackur huh
- The Kurta artifact :(
- LEOPIKA AGENDA IS REAL
- Gon and Killua put their beds together like a sleepover 😭
- Killua head pat Gon (also the ass smack in Heaven’s Arena… I think he’s just more physically affectionate in this version).
- Everyone working together really makes the next phase hit worse/better.
- My god even TONPA got something to do
- The music here was so good. Not that it usually isnt, but like wow
- LEOPIKA AGENDA IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE. Kurapika refuses to give the order to move despite everyone relying on him because he can’t bring himself to leave Leorio. Like holy shit the bait is real.
- POKKLE AND PONZU WERE SO GOOD 😭
- Captain Kurapika!
- Leorio and Gon take turns being unconscious and saving each other
- Not Killua lIterally SENSING Gon coming back up 😭
- Hisoka and Illumi stand around being useless for most of Phase 3.5 which is hilarious but ultimately save the day. I wonder if Illumi took his needles out as a teaser for manga readers or if he just. Couldn’t see well with them in.
Episode 21:
- Zevil Island time YIKES
- The second the announcement is made Hisoka already has murder in his eyes
- The sheer hatred between Leorio and Tonpa kills me
- Gon drew smiley faces on all of his practice dummies 😢
- He covered the hooks on the fishing rod so he wouldn’t hurt the birds 😭 I love him sm
- PLEASE HE HAS A LITTLE NIGHTLIGHT. I WANT TO ADOPT HIM SO BADLY
Episode 22:
- The only time the rubber skin sfx work for me is when Illumi is taking out his needles
- Alright I may get burned at the stake but I personally love the dub voices for everyone except Gon. Which is really sad, because if his voice sounded anything remotely similar to how it did in both 1999 and 2011 subbed (and maybe 2011 dubbed, though that’s a stretch) I would definitely watch 1999 dubbed all the way through.
- Illumi’s outfit and color scheme is kinda fire though.
Episode 23:
- Kurapika and Leorio fucking around on the forest floor
- Hisoka’s bloodlust run SENDS me
- Who else but Kurapika would negotiate with Hisoka on his own terms?
- The amazing soundtrack strikes again. I get chills when he begins to finally unsheathe his blades. Also Leorio pulling his out of his pocket like it’s gonna be a fucking knife fight lmao
- Hisoka practically creaming his pants while Gon is Right There is nothing new, but uh. This is first instance of it in the show so it deserves a mention.
- Bit of a rant here about Gon and HxH in relation to other shounen: https://bit.ly/3phcBB5
- I remember the Hisoka murder run being so terrifying as a kid 😭
- God Hisoka smiling at Gon after Gon took his badge is just so… eugh.
- Gon got the Leorio Uppercut Special. Talk about humiliating.
- Not the slurping noise when he licks the blood 🤢
Episode 24:
- Just an episode of Gon trying to recover after having his confidence broken. They didn’t shy away from the aftermath, which I’m grateful for. Really shows how much it damaged his pride and affected him. Gon has to think about why he came here, deal with homesickness amongst the most challenging days of his life, and somehow nurse himself back to health while barely being able to move.
- On another note: Baby Gon!
- Killua being adorable
- THE EXPRESSION ART ON HANZO LMAO
- Actually 1999 Hanzo is great I was so disappointed to see what he was in comparison in 2011
Episode 25:
- Gon’s absolute zero self-worth manifesting as a “I need to overcompensate when I’ve fucked up or else I’m worth nothing” rearing it’s head in the form of poisonous reptiles 💀
- Why tf Kurapika and Leorio always staring at each other like yeah Leopika agenda but also chill tf out
- I still wanna know how tf Gon carried three whole ass adults by himself. How does he do his strength training.
Episode 26:
- HAHA I LOVE THIS PART
- Expression art in 1999 is another level. The reactions when they think they’ve figured it out as a written exam are so fucking funny
- Kurapika’s theme is so nice. It’s kind of lonely, but also comforting.
- Kurapika and Gon’s conversation about Zevil Island is such a good moment that helps define their relationship
- Hanzo, Pokkle and Leorio “studying”
- Idiot trio asking HISOKA of all people for help
- Are you joking 😭 Not Leopika watching Killua and Gon play together my god the found family is real
Episode 27:
- Kurapika v Hisoka is great
- Horror-soka face strikes again. I know I praised the expressions but Yikes
- Leorio went from pleading with Kurapika to lose so he wouldn’t have to face Hisoka to not caring about that and just worrying endlessly the entire match. I love him
- I fuck w/ Kurapika
- Gon jumps into Leorio’s arms when Kurapika wins like holy shit that’s adorable (and then Leorio puts him on his shoulders like what a dad moment)
- Ok so interestingly, after Kurapika wins, he admits to Leorio that he should have surrendered. When Gon prepared to face Hanzo, he says, “I have to follow Kurapika’s lead and become the second to pass.” This can mean two things: one, he simply wants to pass, similarly to Kurapika. And/or it could also mean he’ll follow Kurapika’s lead by refusing to give up despite the danger, focusing on the goal of passing the exam. There are so many parallels between them GOD. At this point I just want them to call each other in the manga and just Talk (I know it won’t happen but still 😭)
Episode 28:
- At the beginning of the match, the proctors (namely Menchi) make it a point to talk about how outmatched Gon is, yet within a minute they’re all cheering for him and yelling at Hanzo for taking things too far.
- The sheer brutality of this version tops 2011 100%. I don’t think it’s controversial to say that 2011 sped through the Hunter Exam, which is unfortunate since a lot of impact was lost. This fight was hit particularly hard by that.
- The lighting, the choreography, the direction. All of it was phenomenal here.
- “If he keeps going, he’ll destroy himself,” said Cuararpickt, king of the hypocrites
- Kurapika and Leorio worrying about Gon 😭 Not to mention Killua going feral next to them
- Zevil Island really was a serious blow to his pride. Gon lets himself get beat to shit so his opponent will acknowledge him as worthy. He’s desperate to be ‘seen’. I love him sm but he’s genuinely unhinged (and it only gets worse). Fuck Ging, man.
- Kurapika says as much a second later oops
- HANZO IS ONLY 18???
- Gon is so fucking funny I love him. “Um no thank you I don’t want my legs chopped off. Can we keep brainstorming?”
- So when Hanzo asks, “Why won’t you give up?” Gon says, “I’m looking for my dad. And I feel like if I give up now, I’ll never see him again.” This isn’t ‘Ging will get so far ahead I’ll never catch up.’ This is ‘If I give up now, I’ll never be able to face myself or Ging.’ He reminds me of me when I was 12 :/
Episode 29:
- Killua’s face at Leorio and Kurapika 💀
- It’s an interesting decision for Togashi to do the rest of the battles in recap. I suppose it speeds things up.
- Gon sensed what had happened Killua right before Satotz said it, similarly to how Killua sensed Gon during the Treasure/Battleship phase. 1999 really like that kind of stuff haha
- The lighting, again, is fantastic. This time for Killua v Gittarackur (Illumi).
- The organ music is certainly… something
- Illumi’s color scheme here is better than the greens imo
- I forgot how hard Illumi projects onto/abuses Killua. Its difficult to watch.
- The animation on Killua’s face is incredible. You can see every micro expression as he tries to stand his ground :(
- Very nice visual effect here. Killua’s eyes are somewhat teal and rather dark in this version, as opposed to the bright blue of 2011. When Illumi defeats him, black bleeds onto the screen and Killua’s eyes are so dark they match Illumi.
- Hikari Ga Mienai plays when Killua kills Bodero :(
- Gon confronting Illumi is just short of cathartic.
Episode 31:
- THE LEGENDARY FALL OF 99
- The Hunter Exam after party looks kind of fun tbh
- Illumi when Hisoka catches him trying to kill Gon: ⚫️ 👄 ⚫️
- When they search the internet Togashi seems to imply that ‘cyberspace’ is coming from a human brain directly? Or is at least powered by one?
- Leorio: Gon wants his dad? We’ll find his dad *starts typing furiously*
- *Hisoka does something weird* *Illumi looks straight faced into the camera*
- LEOPIKA 1999 AGENDA IS REAL
- the final scene made me think of that radio drama where Leorio was like “yes Kurapika and I are like newlyweds and Gon is our child”. Unreasonably wholesome
END OF ARC
In conclusion stan the producers for clear skin

“Wait. What?” Pokkle looked confused. His eyebrows furrowed. You couldn’t tell if if was mad.
“Yeah. I want to be a beast hunter too.” You looked up at him.
“Well sheesh, you should have told me earlier!” His face brighten up.
“Then we should get going.”
He looked to the horizon squinting his eyes a little. A smile appeared on his face. He took a deep breath and looked back to you.
“Hm. You think you’re ready to go?”
You couldn’t believe it. He agreed. He would let you join. The risk was worth it. Truly it was.
“Yes, just one second.” You stood up.
“Hey, hey not so fast!”
He held your hand and placed his hand on your shoulder. He wasn’t one for personal space, you guessed. You weren’t opposed to it. The rapid speeding of you heart and the flush you got in your cheeks, told you such.
“You look like your gonna pass out.!”
He was right of course. You couldn’t see well, there was stars in your vision. Blotches of black, and blue. The light was only hurting your eyes. The sharp pain in the left side of your face right next to your eyebrow only a little higher, which was gradually spreading. Signaled only that’s something was about to happen. It wasn’t gonna be good.
“I guess we’ll have to wait, and go to a hotel instead.”
“No! I’m ok- I pro-promise.”
“Yea ok soooo we’re DEFINITELY going to a hotel.” Under his breath he muttered.-
“Or a hospital.”
You heard him but decided not to say anything. You just needed some rest right?
Walking to the nearest hotel, he grabbed you hand the whole way. The way a prince might hold a princess’s hand to drag her into a dance. He was quite short but it only added to his cuteness. You wanted to gave him the world but hoped your love was enough. You shook your head by the third block. Why were you thinking theses things? You weren’t together! You barely even spoken to this man. That’s when the reality sunk in. You had gone off with virtually a stranger. A stranger heading to a hotel... at least the gang knows who you went off with, that eased your mind.
Walking into the hotel lobby. Pokkle did all the talking, you sluggishly stood by him. Wanting just to pass out right than and there. You climbed the stairs hoping it would help you feel energized. Why did you think of this? Pokkle wasn’t going to let you show him up. So he ran up the stairs.
“Don’t push yourself to hard~!” In that teasing tone of his.
You got to the door, swung it open with the last of your strength. You wanted to give Pokkle a challenge, really you did, but running seemed alien to you at the moment. Like you would have to learn it all over again. The ringing in your ears replaces with the sound of his bag being dropped on the bed.
“So do you want water?” He asked
“Yeah that sounds really good.”
You said flatly. No energy could be used at this point. You hadn’t even closed the door behind you, you just stood making no movement. He noticed he led you to the closest bed. You sat down.
“I’ll be right back, you rest ok.” He said so kindly.
You listened. You covered yourself with the white blankets as you laid down. Staring at the ceiling you could hear Pokkle move around. You heard as he closed the door, you redundantly left open. He moved to your side quickly. He tried to not make a sound. He handed you a glass of cool water. You reached for it, presses it to your lips. Then thought of tonpa. You had made fun of the boys for almost drinking it.
“You don’t drink or eat things random strangers give you. Thats how you end up dead.”
That statement ringed in your ear.
Btw I’m assuming Pokkle’s age is 16 I saw it online Sooo.... it must be real/s but yea Pokkle’s 16 in my story. ❤️

Hunter x Hunter Chapter 196 - vs Hagya’s squad (3)
one last for tonight !!!!
Tumblr media
Hands in his pockets
what a brat
Tumblr media
Gon needs a reason to kill someone, actually iyt’s the first time we saw him killing someone (not fishes or anything else like a pork)
The ants clearly have personalities and are sentient, even if most of them are assholes
maybe he won’t hesitate as much later
ANYWAY, yes they’re strong at fighting and their aura reflects that unlike Leorio I guess whose aura might become stronger when he is treating someone
Tumblr media
Oh god
he already has a grasp on Gyo
Tumblr media
Peguy is really a big nerd but he’s right
ants have natural weapons that are better than humans, they can use those and reach greater heights. On the other hand, their lack of culture might hinder their abilities and never allow them to think of an ability that would not already work with the weapons their bodies hold
Enhancing those might be enough compare to creating an ability focused on their natural characteristics
Tumblr media
Colt being a smartass as always, wants to interrogate Pokkle
he’s clearly able to think things through even while he’s in atrocious pain
Tumblr media
BASEBALL
(LEORIO AND PIKAAAAAAA)
Tumblr media
WHAT A BRAT
throwing shade like that
his hands are bloody so I guess the 2011 anime did a nice guess on how it went, but this scene animated didn’t involve both hands, only one
Tumblr media
THERE IT IS THE SCYTHE
very looooooong loooooong scythe
Tumblr media
I’m glad they can already guess how dangerous this can be
Tumblr media
I would just panic and die three seconds later because I forgot to jump
Tumblr media
MENACING
very horizontal
nice 90 degrees angle (or pi/2)
Tumblr media
This is a reference to Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho
he too has a move that slashes everything around with a name referencing a waltz.
Also Kurama was a redhead but in his previous life he also had long white hair
Kurapika using chains also is a nice reference to Kurama
both Kite and Kurapika have calm demeanor too and can be quite calculating and cold
Other character look alike would be
Gon and Ging with Yusuke
Leorio and Knuckle with Kuwabara
Feitan and Killua with Hiei
ANYWAY IT’S A BADASS MOVE
I hope he could help me in my yard too
Tumblr media
OOOO nice you remembered
imagine dying trying to figure out what you were thinking about and never finding it, i’d die very pissed
Gon and Killua come down and are horrified, it must have been weird to watch from above
Tumblr media
FIIIIIIRE
poor trees
they didn’t deserve this
I’m glad most numbers don’t mean anything about the strength of the weapon and it’s just the restrictions on it
Tumblr media
YEP like Centipede, they could move with their heads and upper torso alone
be careful
Kite is getting worried about Gon
Killua should be fine
Tumblr media
I agree with Kite, you lack the strength to care about this Gon, assume they wouldn’t think twice about killing you if they cared for their comrades, as shitty as they are
Tumblr media
Of course we all know which good boy this could be referencing
WOW
what a nice chapter to end this liveblogging session

The next game I want to talk about is Zwei: The Arges Adventure (in Japan this game is known as Zwei!!).
I love Falcom games, and before the end of the last year I've finally decided to play the other translated Falcom games that I was missing. To that end, I started my journey with the remake of the first Brandish (which is amazing), and after that now I’ve played this game, which is an old school RPG (an action RPG specifically) that originally came out in 2001.
Tumblr media
The story in this game is really simple: Pokkle and Pipiro (the main characters) live on a floating island in the sky. After a mysterious masked man steals six idols from their village’s shrine, the two set out on an adventure to find them.
Tumblr media
This game is really light-hearted and enjoyable thanks to his writing which is simply amazing. You don’t have to take the game seriously at all, and the dialogue are full of jokes. For this we probably have to thank the localization, I’m pretty much sure that making Japanese humour work in an English translation wasn’t an easy task. I did find myself chuckling a lot throughout the game thanks to the writing (both for the main protagonist and NPC as well).
Tumblr media
Pokkle loves to make puns (and they are really bad), while Pipiro is extremely honest and straightforward (she says everything she wants without any kind of filter whatsoever).
Tumblr media
In this game you can also pick an animal (and you can choose which one you want when you start a new file - personally I did pick a cat) which will accompany you through the game (you can give him basic order and the AI will use him accordingly). If you don’t want him, you can leave him at your house: when you are exploring you will see his adventure in a tab (the pet monitor) and you can give him some basic indication on where he needs to go and what he can do while he isn’t in your party.
Tumblr media
The pet monitor is a nice diversion in your adventure and it’s not the only one: at some point you will reach a specific village where you can play three different minigames (Zwei Shooting, Typing of Ys and Mona Mona) that also serves that specific purpose.
Zwei Shooting is a bite-sized arcade shooter, Typing of Ys reimagines the events of Ys II as a typing tutor (you will play as Adol - the protagonist of every Ys game except for Ys Origin), and Mona Mona (a block puzzler where you lead Mona - a rabbit - to the top of the screen instead of clearing all blocks).
The game is overall really short (it did take me 25 hours to beat it), I would say that the length it’s dependable on what side content you want to do and if you lose time to grind for some item (more specifically, food. I’ll go into more details later). Zwei does have a NG+ option (which you can start with the clear save option): you will keep your level (and EXP required for next level), stats based on level and equipment at final boss, as well as progress made with the Item, Character, Monster, and Score books. Pet levels and key item don’t transfer.
Tumblr media
The game comes with two different options for the ost: you can use the original 2001 ost or the 2008 rearrangement made for the PSP port of the game. Personally I did mostly use the 2001 original: the ost is simply fantastic. I did check the 2008 arrangement while playing (it’s really easy to change the ost in the menu), and while I think that they are fine, I do prefer the original ost. Then again this is something that really comes down to personal preference I suppose.
Zwei 1 2001 ost

Final Battle - Demon Lord Vesper -
youtube
The game utilizes a 2D character design and the visuals, to simply put it, do look really good. The visuals have a lovely mixture of beauty and charisma that you won’t find much elsewhere. It’s really memorable overall.
Despite the high quality of the graphics in this game, the gameplay, in my opinion, is rather average. The combat is really simple, you will control one of the two playable character and an AI controls the other as you fight enemies in an action-based combat system. The fights are also really straightforward: the player simply needs to spam the attack button while dodging the enemy attacks.
In addition to this, the level design in the dungeons is also really repetitive, they do recycle the same art all-throughout (the only exception to this is the final dungeon). You don’t really spend that much time in the same place in the dungeon (the level are really short overall), but at the same time there’s not much that breaks the monotony in what you need to do (explore the level, reach a new part of the same dungeon, see if you can explore something else or either go back to the overworld – thankfully you can warp out of the place – then you need to think which place you need to explore and then you do some levels in this place before changing, once again, the dungeon).
The only things that actually does break a little these sets of action are the boss battle when these occurs. I have to add one thing for the boss: if you lose against them, you can’t skip the cutscene that introduces them, and this is really annoying.
There’s not much in terms of equipment that you will get or use, most of the loot that you grab consists of food, for two specific reasons: on one hand food is useful for healing, but on the other food in this game is the only way to get experience. If you collect 10 types of the same food, you can get back to your village and exchange them to get another single higher-level item. This will grant both more health and experience than consuming the original item separately. You definitely should try to bring back to the village as many food items as you can but sometimes it might be necessary to grind food for levelling up in a faster way. This is definitely a different experience system when what you’ll usually find in this game and definitely is (in a way) unique to this game.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, this game is a simple and a fun adventure that wants to capture the player’s attention with its simplicity. If you are a Falcom fan, you will probably like the game (I loved the charm, the characters from this game, like it’s really good), but the gameplay has a lot of issue that seriously impacts on the enjoyment of the game. For someone who just started approaching their catalogue, I definitely would recommend playing other games before this one (from example, Ys, Brandish, ecc.), and play this one later if you really like Falcom and want to check every game (or what we have translated) that the company made. Don’t get me wrong: I think that this game is really charming and nice, but I don’t really like a lot of things in the gameplay department. It really didn’t age that well in that sense. The characters are great tho, they are really fun to watch and Pokkle and Pipiro are amazing, so look forward to them.

Youuu suck lol I’m gonna do WIPs too because screw the rules, I have ADHD and can’t finish a fic rn to save my life
Don’t Just Hold Me In My Dreams This is the drunkest Atsumu has been in a very long time.
Found My Everything In You “Take it easy tonight, Eita-kun! You earned it!” Eita smiles at Kuzaku, his vocalist, and lifts his hand in a half-hearted wave as he watches his band mates walk down the street. A bone-deep ache has settled into Eita’s limbs now that the excitement from their studio session has worn off. They just laid down the last songs needed for their very first studio album release.
Welcome To The Meat Locker Killua looks up as Gon’s teammates start leaving the locker room, surprise and hesitation coloring his face when he notices that they’re all smiling at him. He returns them with an uneasy smile of his own, but then some of them pat him on the back as well. Zepile gives him a thumbs up and a wink and Pokkle gives him a small wave. Killua waves back to be kind, but he can’t stop the raising of his eyebrow. What has gotten into everyone?
Best Friends And Birthday Kisses Killua raises an eyebrow as his ancient Beatle phone begins to ring. He picks it up and the eyebrow skyrockets further at the caller ID flashing on the screen. He hesitantly answers the call and holds the phone a couple inches from his ear.
Postcard From Wade Deadpool sits down on the edge of the roof with a heavy sigh. Of course, tonight of all nights, his favorite vigilante is MIA from their usual hangout spot. Probably stopping a bank robbery or rescuing a tree from a cat. A beep from one of his many pockets has Wade pulling out his phone in a flash.
I Wanna Be Your Vacuum Cleaner Grimmjow looks around the party while sipping his beer, trying to not make it obvious he's looking for a specific somebody. After all, he called on the party for one reason, and it would be a shame to not have the guest of honor show up.
Natsuo/Shinso/Izuku poly oneshot It’s rare nowadays that the three of them get a lazy day all to themselves. Izuku could probably count on one hand the amount of times it’s happened in just the last year. Most nights it’s them collapsing into the sheets with exhausted greetings and lazy kisses shared before they pass out.
Shinso/Izuku short fic Thunderous footsteps echo through the empty hallway, but Hitoshi is unable to hear them over the thoughts crashing through his mind like a roller coaster flying off the rails. His fists are clenched tight enough that he wouldn't be surprised if blood starts seeping between his fingers.
Shinso/Izuku oneshot Hitoshi opens the door to his dorm and motions for Midoriya to head inside. He follows closely and makes sure the door is shut and locked behind them. He's hardly gotten his bag set down before strong arms turn him around and soft lips press against his own. He hums into the sudden kiss, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend and pulling them closer.
Uhhhhhhhhh
I tag @princelink I guess kgfjhkjfgh if anyone else sees this and wants to do it feel more than welcome to!

Umm can I request directors commentary for literally any Leopika fic you’ve written??? Love your stuff!
❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥
ahhahaha thank you so much! yes, absolutely! this is going to be long, because i have decided to do that scene in light of my life, pain of my ass. beware LONG BULLSHIT and spoilers below the cut!
ok to set the scene. i was TERRIFIED to write this part. because this is the climax, you know? we've had 150k words of build-up and emotional tension to this scene. while this has been a romantic story, this is the actual climax of the story. we've spent all this time in kurapika's head as he's dealt with his anxiety, his need for control, his fear of letting go. how he's changed as he's opened up his heart and his life to people outside. and finally he's actually working through all of his emotions and the progress he's made out loud, in front of everyone. and because he forgot about giving his speech until like five minutes before (sorry, kp), he is forced to speak from the heart.
For five agonizing seconds, Kurapika stood alone in the middle of a silent room. Above him, the string lights coalesced into a single shared point of soft white light that illuminated his space.
i so wish this could be adapted to, like, netflix or made into a movie. i put so much into this imagery. the play on light? the cinnamon topography? *chef's kiss* yes please netflix CALL ME.
Everyone in his life was staring at him expectantly, Pairo and Altair and Gon and Killua and Nanika and Alluka and Kalluto and his parents. And approximately a hundred other people on top of that, extended family on both sides, industry insiders, coworkers. All staring at him and waiting for him to say something amazing and powerful and deep about love and what did Kurapika know about love, anyway? He was a thirty-two year old trans man so terrified of his own emotions, so paralyzed by his fear of loss, that he did not figure out he was in love with his best friend until three weeks ago.
this is me screwing the knife in deeper for poor kurapika, sorry. this is so incredibly horrifying for a person with anxiety, as someone with anxiety. behold, the terrifying ordeal of being known.
Five seconds. Kurapika finally found Leorio standing near the back, leaning against the bar. He wondered if Leorio picked the same spot where they sat together the very first time they came here on purpose. Leorio sent him a wink and a thumbs-up.
the terrifying ordeal of being known and being so, so loved anyway. it was great to write in a way that showed leorio realized he was in love with kurapika first (indeed, realized that kurapika was in love with him before kurapika knew himself), because these little interactions shows so much how leorio is inviting and allowing kurapika to come to him on his own time. and supporting him the whole way, because they are friends!!!!
Breathe, Kurapika thought. Just breathe. It’s going to be okay.
this statement was not supposed to be a running theme/motif, but i'm super glad it did! i wrote it as a one-off line for melody, but then i was like, hang on, that's kinda good? every other time i write i'm like, hey, you could make a theme out of this!
“Um,” Kurapika started, his voice cracking. Christ, he sounded seventeen again. He cleared his throat.
my friends told me about how their voices changed and dropped on T. any trans person is stronger and more powerful than any us marine.
“For those of you who may not know, I’m Pairo’s brother. Kurapika. His older one, just to be clear.”
this is definitely something that has happened like a hundred times.
There was a smattering of chuckles around the room. He twisted to look at Pairo. “I’ve known Pairo since he was a toddler dragging a ragged, threadbare T-Rex plushie around behind him. I was there when he read his first chapter book on his own – Dino Hunter, of course – because he came bursting into my room at two o’clock in the morning to tell me about it.” Another round of laughter. “I was there when he got his first notebook, when he won his first writing contest, when he was published in his first magazine. I was the first person he told about liking boys instead of girls. I’ve watched him grow and learn and fall in love. And now Altair is part of our family, too.”
pairo and kurapika's lives as brothers were amazing. dino hunter is a reference to the book they both read in the manga that led to kurapika wanting to leave the kurta and explore the world.
i also thought that writing fit pairo well because it's a pretty accessible career for his eyes. he could type, he could enhance the screen and font when he needed, and he could do talk-to-type. one day i want to write a side-story of when pairo and altair met, because i have it perfectly formulated in my head and it's adorable.
Kurapika took a deep breath, tucking a lock of hair behind his ear. He confessed, “To be perfectly honest, I was scared when Pairo asked me to do this, because I’ve run out of things to teach him. He’s run on ahead of me in life. Settled down, moved in with his boyfriend – now husband, congratulations on that by the way – and gotten married, while I’m perpetually single and living alone in my loft apartment with an absolutely spoiled monster of a cat. Stop laughing, that wasn’t supposed to be a joke.”
emperor the cat was also not intended to be a character. i came up with him like, right before i started writing the chapter.
i think it was hard for kurapika to watch his brother fall in love and move on ahead in life. even if he was genuinely happy for them both. i had a conversation with a coworker a few months ago where we both talked about how we feel like we are "behind," even though we're both very accomplished. she felt like she was "behind" because i have a master's degree; i felt like i was "behind" because she was happily married and already had a child on the way (who is here and beautiful and perfect). and i imagine kurapika wondered if he was falling behind or missing something when he saw his brother succeed in love and business without really trying.
but there's no competition at all, of course. the world spins on, and we grow and change and find our place in our own time. there's no race.
The room quieted again. Kurapika went on, his eyes flicking over the crowd. He was starting to smile, too, now.
he's starting to realize this is okay, he's not going to mess up, he may actually have something worthwhile to say or share. he's getting more comfortable in all this.
“But I’m also a wedding planner – I know, ironic – and I’ve learned a lot about love from my clients. So if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to share some of those lessons now.”
No one from the back shouted at him to shut the fuck up, that he didn’t have a single clue what he was talking about, so he thought he was safe to carry on.
how funny would that have been??? like, it would have been fucked-up and humiliating, but in any other situation?? hilarious. just killua looking like that dude in mean girls being like HE DOESN'T EVEN GO HERE except it's like HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.
He thought back to Light of My Life’s various couples, musing over their own rocky paths to the altar and the beautiful, fractured glimpses into their lives they gifted Kurapika and his team. What did they teach him? What did they teach his heart, that terrifying, terrified lump of meat frantically beating in his chest?
More than you think, his heart seemed to be telling him. Trust me; I will guide you through this. Trust me, trust me, trust me.
*"listen to your heart" plays in the background*
also like. trusting oneself and your perceptions and your feelings and your heart is so necessary. it's an important part of healing. and being honest with yourself and your feelings is part of a foundation for all healthy relationships, i think.
also i really like writing alliteratively. the play on words with "terrifying, terrified" was. inspired? terrifying, because kurapika for a long time feared his own heart and feelings, viewing them as a loss of control; and terrified, because his heart is afraid, too. and they are taking this leap together!
And Kurapika explained: “Love isn’t just found in eloquent professions or grand, romantic gestures. It’s supporting each other through your lowest, worst moments and coming out the other side stronger for it. It’s standing together, hand in hand, against the world. It’s in looking at someone simply existing in the world and seeing them as they are: good, beautiful, strong, intelligent, kind. It’s in your communication and your foundation and trusting that all good things will come together in time. It’s in the family that you build together. It’s in the work you each put in to get through the hard times. Together.”
me: yeah uh-huh jj you really did summarize the fic so far.
this is also where i started being sappy and thinking about love. friendly and romantic love. the love i've seen in my friends, the love i feel myself in my relationships.
There. That’s what his clients taught him. Menchi and Buhara; Morena and Theta; Pokkle and Ponzu; Knov and Morel; Knuckle and Shoot; Canary and Amane. But so many more people showed him what love was. He pictured Pairo and Altair on his couch, laughing at him and judging him and helping him put his own puzzle-piece heart together into something cohesive and beautiful. He smiled at his brothers and saw the way they were clutching each others hands, mouths beaming and eyes dewy.
they LOVE their brother so MUCH. their view of the outside looking in for the past year, watching kurapika fall in love, go soft, be happier than they've ever seen him.
He told them, “It’s in the way you can communicate in gestures and looks, and sometimes, without looking at all. It’s in banter and private jokes and finishing each other’s sentences. It’s in casual touches and... pouring their coffee before your own.”
my coffee is never as good as when my partner makes it. my honey-lemon tea is never as good as it is when my partner makes it. my jokes are never as funny as they are when my partner and i finish each other's sentences, build off of each other's quips. we can communicate across rooms with nothing but a look. these little signs of love are everywhere and expressed in so many tiny ways. these examples here are between people in romantic relationships, but these apply to platonic friendships as well.
His eyes swept the room and found Killua and Gon. Gon had his camera hefted onto one shoulder, and Killua stood behind him, arms around his waist and chin on his shoulder. “It’s on the first day you wake up and realize the way you look at the world has changed. The way you open your hands and your heart and give what you have, simply for the joy of being received.”
to love? transcendent. to be loved? incandescent. to love and know that it is valued and cherished and requited?
and this was a callback to killua talking about, of course, how he fell in love with gon like melting ice. like sinking into a bath. and this was also a quieter callback to how gon fell in love. because it wasn't just that he had/has so much love to give, but because for the first time in his life, he got to see it truly received. accepted.
Kurapika saw Killua’s breath catch and Gon’s hand flex over the fingers interlaced over his middle. Heedless of their surroundings and of the running camera, Gon twisted to kiss Killua on the mouth.
SMOOCHES ahahaha!
He turned his head back to Leorio. The man had not moved; indeed, he looked like he was nailed to the floor. His eyes were so intense as they watched him that Kurapika was almost surprised he had not yet burst into flame. Kurapika said, “It’s in the moment you see someone you’ve never met before, but you look at them and just know, to your core, that this is really going to be something.”
leorio realizing something is happening here. something huge is about to happen, is about to change. and he's trying so hard not to dare to hope it might be good. it might be everything.
A chorus of oohs went around the room. Even from this distance Kurapika saw the way Leorio’s face went red, and he ducked his chin, looking bashful and embarrassed.
leorio: holy shit holy shit holy SHIT IT'S HAPPENINGGGG
How was I such a fool before, Kurapika wondered, How was I so blind, so willfully ignorant and oblivious. How did it take me so long to realize you were talking about me. I’m sorry it took me so long to get here. I’m sorry I made you wait for so long.
this is important because it's not just kurapika realizing and accepting his feelings for leorio. this is kurapika's version of realizing that leorio feels the same for him. leorio is in love with him, too. and he's wondering how it was possible he was so scared and blind for so long. he fears he may have hurt leorio by holding off on this for so long, so he wants to be brave, take the leap, and see what they could be.
Kurapika did not want this man to wait another second. He did not want Leorio to spend another moment trapped in this limbo. So he confessed in the middle of a silent room in front of over a hundred people, “It's the first time you hear them laugh, and your entire world’s axis shifts beneath your feet.”
i remember the first time i met my partner. i remember the first time i looked at them and felt my world shift a little to the right. i remember falling in love and thinking that this one was unlike all the others. it was warm, golden, comforting.
Kurapika watched the confused frown on Leorio’s face when he heard that, amused by the almost puppyish tilt to his head as he considered it. He knew the moment Leorio realized what he meant when his eyes blew wide, amazed and awed and achingly soft. His lips parted.
gOD he is so CUTE. he's like oh hmm huh what does that mean
and then he remembers
i promise, he's not a huge dickwad!
and leorio laughing at gon's accidental gaffe and his sweet earnestness. and kurapika walking in. leorio realizing kurapika wanted to know him before they ever even met.
Kurapika made himself turn away from the arresting sight. “One of my favorite venues lately was the Roseview Ballroom downtown. Among its many beautiful, gaudy attractions are its murals depicting scenes from Shakespeare’s plays all across the ceiling. One is a famous quote from Twelfth Night: ‘journeys end in lovers meeting, every wise man’s son doth know.’ But the more I think about it, the less I agree.”
i'm such a WHORE for shakespeare, as any readers of mine will know. check out my modern college adaptation of much ado about nothing.
He turned to meet Pairo’s eyes again, repeating, “‘Journeys end in lovers meeting.’ But nothing is ending here. It’s just changing.”
life does not end when we start relationships! or when they end! or when we move, change jobs, graduate, go to school, drop out of school. happy endings in stories still aren't endings. the greatest constant in life is change.
“Because what I’ve learned in this job, Pairo and Altair, what nugget of wisdom I have to give you, is this. Love is looking at a world that can be terrifying, cold, capricious, and indifferent, and finding the person whose hand you want to hold through it all anyway. Because you want every laugh, every tear, every wrinkle, every spark of joy. Love is life’s greatest leap of faith, because you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. But you know exactly who you want to spend all those tomorrows with.”
me finishing this: dammit i just wrote out my wedding vows.
Kurapika looked around the room again. At Gon and Killua; at Kalluto, Nanika, and Alluka; at his parents; at his brothers. At Leorio.
He concluded, “So you simply breathe. And you trust it will be okay.”
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Kurapika dropped the microphone.
DAMN ME TOO THIS SHIT WAS GOOD TF?????? sorry my writing has peaked here.

What HxH character's Smell Like No I Don't Take Criticism PT 2
Someone on Tiktok asked for more so I'm doing this for clout so I could post on my tt acc
Feitan Smells like spicy clean. I cannot describe it any other way. He has the most barely even present scent of spice- but like clean. Like fresh sheets from the dryer but with pepper?? You- you get it??? Maybe some sort of rain smell too
Kortopi: nothing.
Silva Zoldyck: smoke and rain and wet dog
Kikyo: grass. Bad parenting. Waxy candles without scent in them because she thinks they're to uncleanly and gross.
Milluki smells like Axe and crust and grease
Canary smells like how the color gold looks. Probably some somewhat but not super expensive perfume named 'beautiful' or 'golden' from some very known company
Pariston smells like sickly sweet something and nobody can tell what it is. It's both perfectly fine and horrible. What is it??? It's not perfume but it not anything else?! It smells sweet but not like a distinct fruit or candy or anything. It's so confusing
Meruem smells like blood.
Pouf smells. Gross. But fruity. Like edible sparkles drowned in little girl perfume. It's natural. It just. Is there-
Komogi smells like cheesecake. Small and barely there, and nice to smell when getting a little hug.
Shalnark smells like citrus-y fruit. Maybe some sort of mix mainly with an orangy tinge and a general sweet but not concept. It's because of lotion and shampoo. He does NOT want to ever use cologne for reasons nobody understands. He's just *different*
Nobunaga smells like musky sawdust and it's actually nice
Phinks smells like metal and gas emition
Pitou smells like blood and plastic
Neon smells like vanilla too, and it- it's just overwhelming. Girl, you're rich go get one of those perfumes without distinct names that actually allude to something. Like, those perfumes named *ice princess* or *obsidian grey* but smell really good
Melody smells like really nice roses and other assorted flowers from a real perfume that's not cheap but is worth the price
Morel: smoke duh. Almost like an insence type of smoke though like it smells good?? For no reason?? Yes.
Knuckle smells like cheap cheap cologne and dog but it's ok. It's not death-induscing bad and almost comforting
Ponzu smells like cherries and honey
Pokkle(?) Smells like rain

I know its a big debate but I am not a dudebro for thinking killua and gon are platonic. I have no problem with people who do at all, but I honestly just think they have a strong friendship, and I am for encouraging boys to have these types of bonds with each other ~screw toxic masculinity~ I like following your blog btw
Hi ! First of all, thank you for liking my blog! I’m glad you’re enjoying my content even though I’m killugon trash HAHAH
Oh lord, it really is a big debate. I’m not calling everyone who doesnt like a romantic reading of killugon a dudebro, only the people who are vehemently against it because they say people are projecting and that there is no basis to our claims that hxh is queer work.
This is gonna be me ranting for a bit because it’s a subject that’s very dear to me so i’m very sorry in advance, it’s not against you, just a general statement !
I totally agree that fuck toxic masculinity. It’s so fucking toxic and men should be allowed to show emotions, affection and care openly without fearing for repercussions. And having portrayals of friendships where the characters are not afraid of sharing their love with the other in a totally platonic way is amazing.
However.
There’s been countless representations of this type of relationship in media over the years. In every media, not only anime. I always cite the same example, but take Naruto who is the example that speaks to me the most. (ive never seen it so dont flame me if i say dumb shit). But from my understanding, Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship was a full on middle finger in the face of toxic masculinity. They shared a deep bond, pretty much like Killua and Gon’s. I know a lot of people shipped them because their relationship was borderline homoerotic, but in the end it was just a beautiful representation of a very deep platonic friendship.
And when you’re queer, it’s heartbreaking. Because you’ve been projecting this entire time, for the work to tease you, to literally bait you into showing you inherent queer behavior only for it to say “haha lol jk” at the end is fucking rough. Especially when you’re young and questioning your sexuality, looking at relationships between two best friends and thinking “oh, this feels like I feel when I’m with my best friend, is this romantic love?” and then the work saying nope haha its purely platonic ! its rough. trust me.
The community doesn’t have a lot of positive, healthy queer relationships to identify with. Especially in anime. Most queer relationships are labeled under the special genres “shounen ai” and “yuri” (both of these categories painting queer relationships in the worst possible ways ever btw, but thats a whole other subject). But it’s fucking sad. Because we deserve to see queer representation in works that are not classified as those genre. We shouldn’t have to dig into a particular genre to identify with characters : there should be queer representation no matter the genre, whether it be a shoujo, a seinen, or for example, a shounen battle manga.
And that’s why HxH is so important to the queer community. Because it displays just that. That you can have good queer representation in non shounen-ai genres. That queer relationships are normal and should not have to be classified under a certain category.
A lot of queer people identify and recognize HxH as queer work, because of a few reasons. Togashi has always been interested in queer representation, having put queer characters in every single one of his works. There was a trans girl in YYH, a trans man in Level E, Alluka in HxH. Togashi also wrote several gay characters in both of these works. I always repeat myself on this, but Togashi also wanted to write a gay sports manga, but was turned down. His favorite manga when he was younger was a shounen-ai. So yes, Togashi has deep history and is very involved in queer representation.
Togashi is also very fucking smart. Just look at all the metas people are producing every day about hxh and understand how much effort togashi has put into his work : he’s a smart man, who makes conscious choices about everything he puts in his manga. So when you see the way he portrayed Killua and Gon’s relationship, and for now most importantly Killua, you know it’s not accidental. Togashi has put SO much subtext in his work about Killua in general, from his birthday being Tanabata to him wanting to commit a lovers’ suicide with Gon, and Togashi KNOWS how it comes across, he’s not dumb. He knows what those things mean, he knows that a shinjuu is a heavily connotated word, and that people, ESPECIALLY JAPANESE PEOPLE who have the cultural context, are gonna think “oh, maybe Killua is gay”. Because that subtext is intentional. And there’s a lot of it. If you haven’t read my post on the subtext of HxH, I invite you to do so because there’s a LOT of it.
In short, HxH has the subtext, has the potential and has the one author that is not afraid of putting queer stuff in his work. That’s why Killugon is so important to the community, and that’s why a lot of people, especially queer folks, insist on the romantic reading of their relationship.
Because it’s extremely important to queer people. Positive representation of queer relationships in anime is hard to come by, ESPECIALLY in the shounen genre. And sadly, because our society is drowning in deep internalized homophobia, people easily dismiss queer behavior in media as platonic actions.
How many times have I seen people assess that two people of opposite genders in an anime are in love only because they looked at each other once (take Ponzu and Pokkle for example). Or because they held hands. Our society is so quick to romanticize interactions between two people of different genders, but fail to do the same when it’s same-gender pairings.
Straight people hand holding, kissing, blushing around each other, admitting their love out loud, looking at each other’s eyes deeply are immediately categorized as in love. But when it’s people of the same gender, people immediately say “it can be platonic”. And whether you’re aware of it or not, that’s internalized homophobia.
That’s why it’s infuriating to see people dismiss the subtext that Togashi has tried SO HARD to plant throughout his story. Because it’s there, and if Killua was a girl, there’d be way less people opposed to a romantic reading of their relationship. Because it’d be widely accepted that Togashi is writing them as a developing couple, no questions asked.
Which brings me to my final point (promise, I’ll stop ranting after this). Sadly, the voices of the people who assert a platonic reading of a relationship are often louder than the voices of queer people who identify with the work. When confronted with an ambiguous relationship between a same-gender pairing, people unconsciously tend to choose a platonic reading of the relationship. Which is harmful to the queer community, because the voices of the queer people who identify with the work are silenced.
In conclusion, yes, representations of deep platonic friendships without toxic masculinity are good, and very much encouraged. We’ve just had a shitton of those over the years, and queer people are craving for proper representation. Togashi is deeply invested in positive queer representation, has planted a lot of conscious subtext in HxH, and he’s the one author that would NOT queerbait. So people being insistent that Killua is pretty much canonically gay, and that it’s likely that Killugon will be a romantic pairing is not for the sake of mindless shipping. It’s because there are a lot of reasons to believe that this is Togashi’s intention.
And like I said, sadly, people insisting on a platonic reading of their relationship is unintentionally harmful to the queer community, because people are so quick to dismiss elements that make queer people identify with the work as platonic behavior, dismissing queer people as “wishful shippers”.
There are plenty of reasons to believe that HxH is queer work, and while platonic readings of killugon’s relationship are valid, it sucks that it’s become overbearing in the anime community, to the point where outside of tumblr, people literally bully you for thinking that there’s a possibility Killua might be gay and in love with Gon. (trust me, i’ve faced a lot of people saying that it’s disgusting to label killua as gay)
So yes ! Killugon can be read as platonic. The queer community is just very adamant about people not dismissing Togashi’s subtext because HxH is the healthy, positive representation we need. It’s a beautiful piece of work that has the full potential (and who is most likely headed this way) to display a healthy, loving, positive canon gay relationship between two of its main characters.
Showing that a shounen battle manga can feature a canon gay relationship, showing that you can be young and gay and what you thought was best friend behavior was maybe romantic and that it’s okay because feelings change and are hard to figure out especially when you’re young and queer !!
And most importantly showing that unlike every portrayal of deep male best friends relationships in shounen anime that turn out to be painted as purely platonic, sometimes behaviors that queer people identify with ARE queer behavior, and not just platonic love, but romantic, homosexual love.

(Name) opened her door, a smile on her face. “Poks, Poni! Welcome!”
The two walked in, looking around her less than impressive apartment. “Oh, wow… it’s certainly an apartment.”
Pokkle elbowed the blue haired girl, who coughed before speaking up. “What I mean is, this place is lovely.”
“Thanks Poni, but I know it… average? I mean at East there’s no pests. My last apartment had a bad rat problem.”
They both grimaced.
“Yeah, they were like the size of my arm. Thought of keeping one as a pet. I mean, they were dog sized.”
“Dog s- never mind. We brought some gifts.”
(Name) gasped when they pulled out a gift basket and pot of flowers. “Guys, you shouldn’t have!”
She placed the basket on her counter, before looking at the pot of flowers. “What are these?”
Ponzu smiled, her bees flying around the small red flowers. “They’re poppies, Poppy!”
“Poppy?”
The two smiled at her. “Yeah, it’s your nickname. You call us Poks and Poni, so we’re gonna call you poppy!”
(Name) laughed. “Oh really? Is there a reason for that name specifically?”
———————
(Name) packed her suitcase yet again after seeing off her two friends. ‘I’m going to miss them…’
She pulled her suitcase towards the airport, where she’d be meeting Gon and Killua.
It was early July, and the two had asked her to join them on whale island to catch up and train.
“(Name)!”
She gasped when she felt someone jump onto her back. “G-Gon?”
He laughed, hugging her from behind as she tried not to fall over. “Hey, did you miss me?”
The weight on her back disappeared as she heard yelling from behind her. “Gon, you idiot you can’t just jump on people!”
“Killua!”
She turned around and pulled the two boys into a hug. “I missed you both so much. My sweet boys!”
Gon laughed, Killua halfheartedly swatting her away. “Let’s get boarded, and we can talk then!”
(Name) nodded slowly as they explained what happened in Heavens Arena. “You fought Hisoka? Gon…”
She patted his cheek, the boy leaning into her touch. “I’m okay, (Name). It was a… learning experience.”
(Name) sighed before leaning back in her seat. “I understand you want to get stronger, Gon, but please be careful.”
Gon nodded. “I promise I’ll be careful!”
They arrived on whale island after around 2-4 days of travel.
“Wow, it’s been such a long time since I’ve stood on my home ground! Ahh, the air smells so good!”
The two sniffed the air as (Name) pulled her suitcase behind them. “So, where’s your house?”
“We gotta take a bus to your house, right?”
“There aren’t any buses!”
(Name) hummed as she walked around, stopping by a market stall. She bought some bread and cheese, walking back to the two boys as they continued talking.
“It’ll take all night to get there? What are we going to eat?”
Gon held up his apple, and (Name) laughed. “Well good thing I grabbed extra.”
The three walked along the river, eating the food (Name) got along with the apples the captain gave them.
Early the next morning, the three spotted Gon’s house. (Name) trailed behind them, Gon pulling her suitcase.
“Aunt Mito, I’m back!”
Aunt Mito waved at them from the porch, (Name) sighing in relief. ‘Oh thank god.’
Killua and (Name) blinked when Gon sprinted off to hug Aunt Mito. They watched as they chatted for a moment, then Aunt Mito looked up.
“Oh, are these two friends of yours?”
“Yeah, we met during the Hunter Exam! She’s (Name), and he’s Killua!”
Aunt Mito smiled at the two. “Oh right, the ones your wrote about in your letter!”
(Name) gave them a polite greeting. “Hello, thank you so much for allowing us to stay.” she elbowed killua to get him to give a greeting as well.
“Hello…”
“Gon this is the first time you’ve ever brought home some friends to visit! (Name), Killua, right? I’m Gon’s Aunt Mito, I hope you two feel right at home!”
They followed her inside, (Name) setting her suitcase by the door. The two peeked inside it, both having places their extra clothes in as well.
“I really wish you would have let me know before hand you were coming home, I could of prepared something.” Aunt Mito said with a sigh, taking out ingredients.
(Name) hovered around the kitchen, feeling a bit useless.
“Whatever you’ve got is fine!” Gon said, grabbing (Name)’s hand and pulling her towards the living room.
“Well you knows it’s not every day we have guests in the house!”
“No, really, it’s fine.” Killua replied to Aunt Mito.
“I could help if you need it, I promise!” (Name) said, peeking into the kitchen again. Aunt Mito waves her off.
“You’re a guest dear, you just relax, I’m sure the journey here was tough on you.”
(Name) twiddled her thumbs, the two boys standing on either side of her.
“Now that you mention it we are kind of hungry. We’ve been walking since last night, so yeah!” Gon said, leaning his head against (Name)’s arm.
“Well I guess that explains why you three are so dirty. (Name) why don’t you go take a bath in my room? Gon, Killua, you two can use the big bathroom down the hall.”
“Wait right now?”
“Yes, just leave me your clothes. I’ll wash them later.”
(Name) gave her a polite nod before walking towards the room she pointed to.
After a nice shower, she walked back to the kitchen, sitting at the table. “Miss Mito, are you sure there’s nothing I can do to help?”
“Just Mito is fine, and it’s almost ready. You could help set the table, though!”
(Name) jumped up at this. “On it!”
Killua and Gon walked into the room, both now clean and wearing different clothes. The girl couldn’t help but squeeze their cheeks. “Aww, I think this is the first time I’ve seen you both all nice and clean.”
She gave them a hug before continuing her work. Killua followed behind her like a lost puppy, occasionally jumping back when she’d turn around.
‘Haha, he doesn’t want her to know he’s following her!’ Gon thought, snickering.
(Name) helped Mito set the table, patting Killua’s head as she took her seat. “Hungry?”
He nodded slowly, (Name) giggling at his excited face.
“This tastes great!” Killua said, happily munching on an omelette. (Name) nodded in agreement.
“You think so?”
“I told you Aunt Mito’s cooking is the best in the world!”
“Mito, you’ve got to show me how you got these omelettes to be so fluffy!”
The red haired woman laughed, basking in the compliments. “Of course!”
As they ate, Mito passed out more food,
“Here, try these.”
Killua stared at the red peppers, picking them off his plate and placing them on another.
“Killua! You really shouldn’t pick at your food like that. Don’t you know red peppers are good for you? You should at least try it.”
“Ahaha, actually I’m not really a big fan of these. Sorry.”
“Oh good, at least you’re not allergic to them! They’re delicious. Go ahead and take a bite, you’ll know what I mean.”
“She’s right Killua. What’s the worst that could happen?”
“Ahh! Mom, quick, get a towel!”
———————
The two left to go play in the forest nearby, leaving (Name) with Aunt Mito.
“So, how was your experience with the Hunter Exam?”
(Name) sighed, sitting down in front of her. “Exhausting, but…”
She glanced down at her phone’s Home Screen, smiling to herself. “I met a lot of important people there. Gon and Killua included. You raised a really sweet boy, Mito.”
Mito laughed, handing her a cup of tea. “I would hope so. Tell me, what was he like during the exam? He wouldn’t tell me everything, and I would like to know more.”
(Name) told her as much information as she could without potentially getting her younger friend in trouble. Mito nodded along, giggling when she saw how hot (Name)’s face got when she talked about Kurapika.
“So, this Kurapika… you like him, don’t you?”
(Name) sighed, hiding her flushed face. “Is it that easy to tell?”
Mito laughed. “Yes, it is. He must be quite special to have caught the attention of a sweet girl like you.”
They talked into the evening, and this time Mito allowed (Name) in the kitchen to help her cook. She taught her several tips and tricks, (Name) writing each one down.
The two boys got back all dirty again, being scolded and told to go take another bath. After that, they all ate dinner together.
“Time for bed, you two. I’ll be up in a moment, okay?”
Mito blinked when the two immediately listened to (Name)’s words. After the two were out of sight, (Name) realized what she’d done. “Oh, sorry Mito! I’ve just gotten used to taking care of them.”
“No, please don’t be sorry for that. I can’t tell you how thankful I am knowing Gon had someone like you by his side during the Hunter Exam.”
They shared a smile, before (Name) got up and stretched. “I should be getting to bed too. First I need to go say goodnight to both of them.”
She waved to Mito before walking to their shared room.
“(Name)!”
Gon was about to leap out of bed to greet her, but stopped when she shook her head. “Wait there, I’m coming.”
(Name) sat down beside him and leaned down to kiss his forehead. “Goodnight, Gon. Sweet dreams.”
“Goodnight, (Name)!”
She move on to Killua, who was impatiently waiting for her. She gave him a peck on the forehead. “Goodnight, Killua. Sweet dreams…”
She gave him another forehead kiss when he pouted at her. “And one more for good luck!”
The white haired boy swatted her away halfheartedly again, (Name) laughing. “Oh, I get it, you want me to go, huh?”
She stood up, about to leave before Killua grabbed her arm. She glanced back at him inquisitively, the boy unsure why he’d done that himself.
“… could you stay a little longer? Just until we fall asleep?”
(Name) took a second to register this request. ‘Where did this come from?’
Nevertheless, she sat back down, the boy snuggling up onto her lap. She hummed quietly as she ran her fingers through his hair.
Unbeknownst to them, Mito watched the scene from outside the door. ‘How cute…’
———————
(Name) woke up when she felt someone kick her. “Ow…”
She blinked her eyes open to see killua snuggled up against her, having kicked her in his sleep. ‘Did I fall asleep in the boys room?’
She attempted to get up, but the boy clinging to her grumbled at that. She glanced at the window to see it was still night time, maybe early morning. (Name) settled back into bed, making herself comfortable before going back to sleep.
“Alright boys, (Name), it’s time to get up!”
“Yes, Aunt Mito!”
Killua and (Name) groaned when the boy shook them. “Wake up!”
The sun peaked in through the window, shining down on the pair. Night was over, and (Name) had to use the bathroom.
“Okay, Killua, you gotta let go of me now.”
The boy didn’t answer, only cuddling into her closer. “Gon, can I get some help here?”
Gon ran over and grabbed Killua, pulling him away so (Name) could escape. She watched in amusement as the boy searched for her in his sleep, handing him a pillow to be her substitute.
After using the bathroom, she returned to the boys room to make sure Killua was up. He was, but barely. (Name) opened up her suitcase and laid out a pair of clothes for him to change into before going to her own room to unpack.
She unlocked her phone, scrolling to Kurapika’s contact and attempting to call him.
‘Oh, no service…’
For some reason, this made her… nervous. She would be alright going a few days without speaking to him because she knew it was because she didn’t have any service.
But he wouldn’t know.
Kurapika paced, his nen master raising an eyebrow an eyebrow at his unusual behavior. “What’s up with you, Kurapika? You’re acting strange.”
The blonde huffed, pulling his phone out and glancing at the time. On whale island, it should be around 10 am, and they usually called at 8 am her time every morning.
“Nothing. Nothing at all.”
His pacing continued. “Are you thinking of that girl again?”
Kurapika paused, shooting his master a look. “Tansy none of your business.”
“It is when it’s affecting your training.”
He sighed, sitting down in front of his master. ‘Is she really affecting my training?’
(Name) sighed. The day had passed by quickly, Gon and Killua watching a movie she downloaded on her phone as she folded laundry before bed.
“We’re gonna get the internet set up in two days, then you’ll be able to contact Kurapika again.”
Gon was trying to reassure her, but she could only continue holding to keep her mind off of it.
Kurapika tossed and turned again that night. He struggled to sleep without the sound of her sleeping on the phone. He slid open his phone and listened to a voice message she sent.
‘Hey, Pika, I just found the cutest dress! I’ll send you a picture in a minute. But before that, let me tell you about the crazy day I had!’
He chuckled as the message continued, eyes getting heavy as she explained her day. Kurapika clutched his blanket, chest feeling heavy.
‘Have I gotten so used to her that sleeping without her is impossible?’
Kurapika was able to drift off, but not peacefully. The weight of this knowledge weighed heavy on his heart.
‘Can’t… can’t keep going on like this.’
———————
“Once you got that cable hooked up, we should be able to access the internet!” Killua said, directing Gon.
(Name) eat near them, occasionally handing Gon tools.
“Gon?”
The boy leaped up to peer over the roof at Mito. “Yes?”
“I’m going out for a little while, could you watch the place?”
“Yeah, okay!”
“Thanks, I appreciate it!”
Gon glanced at (Name) and Killua, giggling to himself. The two ended up watching Mito’s bar.
Killua sat behind the counter, looking sleepy as (Name) swept the floors. When she heard him yawn, she made sure to finish up so she could carry him home to nap.
Unfortunately, he fell asleep before she was finished. (Name) shook her head at the boy, picking him up carrying him to his room so he could sleep peacefully.
When she tried to untangle the boy and lay him down, he grumbled again and refused to let go. ‘Oh, Killua…’ she thought, lying down with him. ‘Good thing Mito’s mother saw us leave…’
She attempted to keep herself awake, humming to the boy as he slept, but couldn’t help dozing off with him.
(Name) rubbed her eyes as she woke up, glancing out the window to see Mito cutting Gon’s hair.
“Oh, you two are awake! You both fell asleep on the job.” Gon said, Mito moving his head to trim the other side.
“Gon! Are you getting your hair cut?” Killua asked, climbing off of the bed.
“Yeah, it was getting kind of long.”
“Okay, now how about you? Do you want a haircut? Looks like you can use a trim.” Mito asked.
Killua glanced between the scissors and Mito, (Name) picking up on his anxieties.
“I can cut your hair, Killua.”
This made him sigh in relief. “Yes, that sounds good.”
(Name) sat him down in a chair outside, wrapping a towel around the white haired boy. “Wow, Killua, your hair is so soft…”
She ruffled his hair, causing Killua to huff. “Hey, I said you could cut it, not play with it.”
(Name) laughed, beginning to trim it. “Sorry, sorry. It’s just…”
She ran her fingers through his hair, humming. “You’re kind of like a dandelion. Hmm…”
She closed her eyes, then blew on his hair. The boy laughed, swatting at her half heartedly. “Hey, what was that for?”
“I just made a wish! They say if you blow on a dandelion and make a wish, it comes true!”
Gon nodded, sitting on the ground next to them. “Oh, I heard of that too! Aunt Mito said you gotta close your eyes and wish with all of your heart!”
Killua tilted his head. “Really? I never heard of that… so, (Name), what did you wish for?”
She giggled, continuing with his haircut. “Can’t tell you that, silly, then it won’t come true!”
Killua closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of his hair being cut. ‘Hmm… this is nice.’
———————
Kurapika jumped when he heard his phone ring. He scrambled over to it, heart soaring when he saw (Name)’s contact.
“(Name)!”
He melted when he heard her giggle on the other end of the line. “Pika! Sorry for the wait, whale island has like no signal! Gon and Killua just got the Wi-Fi set up here, so I can at least call.”
“Oh…”
Several situations of why she hadn’t called had gone through his mind. They ranged from her forgetting, to purposefully not calling him, to her being injured or even dead. Not once did he stop to think there may be a simpler explanation like not having service.
“I’m having so much fun though! Toady Mito, or well Gon’s Aunt Mito taught me how to make the fluffiest omelettes! I can’t wait to make one for you, Pika!”
Although his tummy filled with butterflies at the thought of making something specifically for him, he couldn’t let those fuzzy feelings linger. “(Name), I need to… ask something of you.”
She went quiet, before nodding. “Go ahead, Pika.”
He inhaled, hand shaking as he looked down at her contact photo. It was the picture of her kissing his cheek, something he would never be able to forget.
“… never mind, it’s nothing. Please, tell me more about your time on Whale Island so far.”
Although she could tell he wanted to say something, she didn’t want to push him. After all, if it was something important, he’d tell her when he was ready.
After a few hours of mindless chatting, Kurapika ended the call. He bit his lip, swiping through the pictures (Name) had sent him.
He stared down at the pair of earrings she’d sent him for his birthday, holding them up to the light. They were rubies that dangled on silver chains, and he had been meaning to wear them.
Kurapika took the first one out of the box, eyes softening. They were beautiful, and he didn’t want to think about how much she spent on them. He put the first one on, using a stream as a mirror.
‘Pretty…’
Kurapika might not look like it, but he was a fan of jewelry. He tried to hide this little interest of his, not wanting to come across as greedy. After all, Kurapika was after people that collected disgusting things, he didn’t want to be associated with them in the slightest.
But right now, he allowed himself to stare at the dangling jewel, turning his head in different directions to watch it glitter in the setting sun.
He put the other one in before standing up. With a final look at himself in the stream, he knew what he had to do.
When the awful thought of (Name) possibly being hurt or kidnapped because of her ties to him crossed his mind, his immediate reaction was to do anything to get her back. And that… scared him. How had he let himself grow so attached to a person, let himself get so… soft?
Was he really willing to not only put her in danger, but jeopardize his mission because of her? If it came down between her and defeating the Phantom Troupe or collecting the scarlet eyes, what would he choose?
Kurapika scrolled to her contact, sliding to the left and pressing mute. ‘I can’t… I can’t allow myself to grow soft. She’s… she’s becoming a liability.’
He opened up his satchel, pulling out the small postcard she had sent along with the earrings.
“Though they dull in comparison to your scarlet eyes, I thought rubies would be the closest to complimenting them. Happy 18th birthday Pika, I hope I can celebrate it with you next year!”
-Love, (Name)
He felt tears well up in his eyes. Kurapika was really about to go through with it.
‘I’m such a coward, couldn’t even tell her that I could never see her again…’
He stuffed the note back into his satchel, throwing it over his shoulder.
“Master, I’m ready.”
———————
(Name) hummed to herself, taking a picture of her new pajamas and sending it to Kurapika and Leorio before leaving the bathroom.
Like usual, Leorio was quick to respond.
Oreo: looks great, sunshine!
She giggled, sending him a quick text back.
(Name): thanks, Leorio! Can’t wait to see you this September!!
(Name) waited for Kurapika to respond, eyebrows furrowing when five minutes passed without a response. ‘Hmm, he must be busy…’
“(Name), help!”
The girl looked up to see the boys rushing into the bathroom past her, Gon carrying something in his arms.
“(Name) knows medical stuff, she should be able to help!”
Gon pulled her into the bathroom, showing her some type of small cub. “Oh, Gon…”
The poor thing was panting, barely hanging on to life. They moved out of her way, allowing her to badge its wounds and place it on a towel.
“Gon, sweetheart…”
She was trying to think of how to deliver the new that the little cub wouldn’t make it when they began fighting.
“No way, I’m not gonna let you do that!” Gon exclaimed, pushing his friend away.
“Get out of the way, it’s too late! Listen to his breathing, he can’t be saved so I’m putting him out of his misery!” Killua said.
“No, you can’t kill him!”
“He’s not going to survive!”
“No, he will okay, because (Name) and I are gonna help him!”
“Ugh! That’s it, out of my way!”
(Name) stepped forward, pushing the two apart. “Hey, this isn’t a time to be fighting!”
“That cub is dying, so I just want to put an end to its suffering! Isn’t that obvious? It’s not going to survive, so it’s stupid to try and save it.”
“Killua…”
She grunted when she felt his sharpened nails pierce her skin. “I know you just want to end its suffering, but right now it’s alive, and I won’t let you be responsible for another living beings death!”
He stepped back a little, retracting his claws as his eyes bore into his hands. Blood, HER blood was coating his fingertips.
“Killua, let me shoulder this burden, okay? You’re a child, you shouldn’t be responsible for this.”
He sat down, bringing his knees to his chest. “But… killing is all I know.”
The room was silent for a moment, only the sound of the small animal panting able to be heard.
“Wait, we do know a way Killua! Our nen, we can use our nen to save the cub! Like when Wing transmitted his aura into us! Remember? He taught us that every living thing has its own aura!”
(Name) watched at the white haired boy perked up. ‘Nen?’
“You’re right… if we can enhance the aura of that cub, he could make it. It’s worth a try!”
The two approached the cub, their hands hovering over it. The air felt strange, like there was static surrounding her.
“Watch this, (Name). It’s something we learned in Heavens Arena.” Gon said, beckoning her forward.
“Let’s take it slow at first, we don’t want to risk hurting it.” Killua replied, glancing at (Name)’s bleeding arm.
For the next hour, the two kept their hands over the cub. (Name) gasped when she noticed it’s condition stabling, laughing. “It’s working, oh my god!”
The next morning, the three watched as the cub joined its father by the lake. (Name) stood behind the two, smiling.
“That was a very important thing you did, Killua.”
He turned, lip quivering. “Uh, thanks… ya know…”
His fingers ghosted over the bandage on her arm, eyes beading with tears. “I’m sorry.”
She waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t be. It was an accident.”
Gon ran over to them. “Okay, they’re gone! Let’s go home.”
“Alright then, it’s best we do before Mito gets worried.”
She kneeled down and brought to two into a hug, giving each a kiss on the forehead. “I’m so proud of you two.”
Killua closed his eyes contentedly, holding onto the back of her shirt and Gon giggled.
————————
(Name) waved to the two boys from the boat as she left whale island. “I’ll see you two in August! Be safe, boys!”
“We’ll miss you, (Name)!” Gon yelled as Killua waved to her shyly by his side.
The three made plans for them to stay at (Name)’s apartment to save money while they were in York New. It was a good idea, considering how expensive the housing could be there.
After their night of saving the cub, the two taught her about nen, though she still didn’t understand it. Apparently a teacher was supposed to come and train her soon.
(Name) began planning for their arrival as soon as she got home. She had two Hunter missions she needed to go on before September 1st, both simple body guarding jobs. After that, she’d have enough money to put a good amount into savings, and the rest could be used for rent and groceries.
Every day until September 1st, (Name) called Kurapika. He didn’t answer her calls, her texts, nothing. She was always left on delivered.
(Name) knew it was probably because he was busy with work, but she couldn’t help but worry for her dear friend.
‘I miss him…’
She held a hand over her heart, feeling it thump against her chest painfully. Her heart was aching, yearning for him. All (Name) wanted was to hear his voice again, to know he still thought about her.
That he still cared.
She set down her phone after calling him again, sighing. ‘It’s only one more week, then I’ll see him again. I’m sure he’s just been too busy with training and his new job…’
Ever the optimistic woman, (Name) continued working on getting her apartment ready for guests.
——————
(Name) yawned, waiting at the airport on an early August morning.
“(Name)!”
Yes again, Gon jumped onto (Name), this time she was waiting with open arms. He laughed as she spun him around, squeezing him out. “Hey, Gon!”
Killua walked up, scolding his friend for being so tough with her. “Killua!”
She pulled him into a hug, the boy relaxing. “It’s nice to see you again, (Name).”
She their hair before leading them to her van. “Let’s get going, we’ll drop your bags off at my place and then you two can explore to your hearts content.”
The two grabbed a snack from her fridge before leaving to do some research. “Be back before dinner time, okay? I promised your Aunt Mito that I’d take care of you, and that means not letting you two only eat junk food!”
“Yes, (Name)!”
They waved as they raced out of her apartment.
‘With those two’s appetites, I’ll have to go grocery shopping to have enough for dinner…’
(Name) pulled on her shoes on, leaving her key under the rug. She sent Killua a quick text before leaving.
(Name): Headed into town, if you two come back before I get home, my keys are under the rug! There’s snacks and drinks in the fridge!
Dandelion: thanks, (Name). Gon says be safe
She giggled to herself, placing her phone in her pocket.
Later that night, the two returned home grumpy, butting heads with each other as they entered the door.
“What happened with you two?” (Name) asked as she pulled off her apron. They relaxed slightly when the scent of dinner hit their noses.
“Killua lost all our money!”
“Hey, you gotta lose money to make money!”
(Name) sighed. “Boys, sit down. We can talk about it after dinner.”
They were quiet as they ate, (Name) smiling as they inhaled their food. It was obvious they were starving after running around the city all day.
“Okay, you two start talking and I’ll get the table cleaned up.”
They began explaining what happened, (Name) nodding along as she cleared the plates and started washing dishes. “Hmm, well I see both of your points. Killua did take a big risk and lost a lot of money, but Gon’s method was too slow and wouldn’t have made enough money by the time the auction started.”
She place a piece of cake in front of both of them. “You can think about what to do in the morning, rest and have some cake.”
Gon sighed, giving her a smile. “Sorry for troubling you, (Name).”
She shook her head. “Don’t be sorry. You’re my friends, I’ll do everything I can to help you accomplish your goals, Gon.”
After dessert, (Name) tucked the two into bed, glad she had a spare bedroom. “Goodnight, boys. My room is right down the hall if you need me.”
She smiled before closing the door behind her.
———————
A week passed by, September 1st finally arriving. (Name) woke up early, making a big breakfast and calling Kurapika yet again.
‘Still no answer…’
Now that was strange. They were supposed to be meeting September 1st, so it didn’t make sense for him not answer. ‘He… he’s probably still busy with his job.’
That excuse was getting harder to believe, but she shook the frown from her face and smiled. “Boys, breakfast is ready!”
The two came racing into the kitchen, making their plates before sitting at the table to eat. “Thanks, (Name)!”
As they finished their food, Gon looked up. “Are you coming with us today? Leorio supposed to be meeting us in the market.”
(Name) nodded, taking their cleared plates. “Yeah, give me 15 minutes to get dressed.”
She threw on a pair of jeans and a warm cardigan and followed the Gon and Killua to the market.
(Name) trailed behind the two as they walked, occasionally stopping at stalls to browse their wares. She wanted to get everyone a little gift to give them when they all met up. So far she had something for Gon and Leorio, only needing to shop for Kurapika and Killua.
She considered getting Kurapika more jewelry, after all he’d been incredibly happy with the earrings she’d gifted him, but decided against it. She didn’t want to give him a similar gift twice in a row, so it would have to be something else.
“A cellphone?”
“Yeah! Kurapika was planning on getting here yesterday, and Leorio will be meeting us here, so a cellphone will come in handy.”
(Name) perked up at Gon’s words, the girl drifting closer to listen.
“Kurapika said he has an assignment, so he might not have time to see us…”
She blinked. ‘He told Gon that but not… me?’
“An assignment?”
“Mhm. He said if he has free time he’ll call, and who knows when that could be. So that’s why I want a cellphone.”
Her heart sank at the thought of not being able to see Kurapika. She’d been so excited, and the thought of seeing him again had been the only reason she kept going at times. Gon sensed this, quickly waving his hands. “Oh, but I’m sure he’ll at least want to see you, (Name)! You know he has a soft spot for you!”
She sighed, ruffling the boys hair. “Yeah…”
She pushed her worry away, rubbing her arm as the salesman spoke.
“You want a deal? Here you go! This phone is the latest thing. It’s small, thin, and light and it comes with a GPS system to help you find your way around.”
“What do you think?” Killua asked Gon as he absentmindedly patted (Name)’s arm in an attempt to comfort her.
“Well, the price is right and it would fit in my pocket… yeah I think I’ll take it.”
“You don’t want that one.”
The three started to slowly turn around, (Name)’s eyes brimming with tears.
“You can’t roam with it and it’s not even waterproof. I’d go with this one over here if I were you.”
“Leorio!”
“Yo!”
(Name) jumped into his arms, the man spinning her around as they both laughed. “Leoriooo! I missed you!”
“Right back at you, sunshine.”
He kissed her forehead, causing her to break out into giggles. The two boys glanced at each other.
“Is it just me, or do they seem a lot closer now?” Killua whispered to Gon.
“Well, living together for nearly four months will do that.”
Leorio got them their phones, and began walking back to (Name)’s apartment. “Are you staying with me too, Leorio?”
“Nah, I got my own hotel. Don’t wanna make your apartment too crowded.”
“Aww, but I slept in your bed with you for months! I promise I don’t mind.”
Leorio blushed at that, the two boys laughing at his reaction. "Hey, don't say that in front of them."
"Why? It's not like we did anything."
She giggled, the taller man's face going red. "Hey!Quiet down.”
They say in (Name's apartment, using her computer to look up information as she prepared some snacks.
"Hey, sunshine, can you grab me a beer?"
"Coming up!”
Killua scoffed, flicking the man on the back of head.
"Why are you acting like she's your little housewife? You can get it yourself.”
"Hey! (Name), Killua is picking on me!"
'What is he, a kid?'
(Name) came back carrying a tray of snacks in her hands and a beer under her arm. "Here, Leorio." She set down the tray before kissing his cheek. "Find anything yet?"
He sighed, cheeks turning pink. "A few things."
‘What the hell is their relationship!?' Killua thought, eyebrow twitching.
Before the three left to start a conditional auctioning, (Name) stopped Leorio.
“Has…”
She held onto his sleeve, staring down at the floor. “Has Pika talked to you recently?”
Leorio raised an eyebrow. “Yeah, a few days ago he informed me he had a new job. Has he not been in contact with you?”
(Name) seemed to deflate slightly. “He… hasn’t talked to me in a month…”
This seemed to genuinely surprise Leorio, the man taking a step back. “What?! A month? But the two of you were calling every day, even falling asleep on the phone together!”
She groaned. “I know! It’s so weird. I’ve been telling myself it’s because he’s just busy but…”
Now it was hard to hang onto that excuse. “Hey, I’m sure there’s some reason he hasn’t called. To be fair, he’s only texted me a handful of times this month.”
She nodded slowly, looking up. “Yeah…”
Gon held her hand. “I’m sure he wouldn’t ignore you on purpose. Kurapika cares about you a whole lot! There has to be a reason! I bet his new job has been suuuper time consuming!”
“Yeah!”
(Name) smiled, the boy grinning back. “There we are! I love your smile, (Name)!”
She giggled, ruffling his hair. “You little charmer. You boys go on, I’ll have dinner ready when you all get back.”
She waved them off and closed the door behind them.
“Oh, Pika…”
She sank to the floor, holding her phone in her hand. Her finger hovered over the call button, but before she could call him again, she stopped.
‘He won’t answer, anyway.’ she thought bitterly, picking herself up.
(Name) brushed her pants off before lightly smacking her cheeks. ‘I can’t think like that. I gotta trust him. He said he’d always be there for me! I just have to… I just have to believe in him!’
She grabbed her purse, throwing it over her shoulder before running out the front door. ‘I’ll get some grocery shopping done. Maybe I’ll even find presents for them!’
——————
(Name) finished her shopping, having secured a gift for both Kurapika and Killua. She hummed to herself, glancing down at her grocery list.
“Need more celery, milk, eggs… ouch!”
(Name) tumbled to the ground, quickly gathering her things. “Watch it, girl.”
(Name) looked up to see a man glaring daggers at her. This didn’t bother her, though. No, (Name) jumped up and began frantically checking over the stranger. “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry! Are you okay? I wasn’t paying attention. Did you get hurt? I have bandaids in my ba-“
The man stepped out of her way before he continued walking. “Tch, annoying.”
She blinked, crouching back down to pick up the rest of her things when she spotted it.
A wallet. There was nothing to identify the man with inside of it, only a few unmarked bills and a picture of a group of children. She tilted her head. “Sir, sir you dropped your-“
But he was gone. (Name) smacked a hand over her forehead. ‘Maybe I’ll bump into him again. Can’t leave it here…’
She stuffed the wallet into her backpack, sighing. (Name) pouted at her scraped elbow, taking out a bandaid and slapping it onto her wound before walking away.
As the sun began to set, (Name) started cooking dinner. The boys would be out late, meaning she could really take her time.
After hours of arm wrestling, Gon walked into her apartment, the other two trailing behind him.
“Just in time, dinner is ready!”
Leorio nodded sleepily, sitting down at the kitchen table to eat dinner. “Leorio, why don’t you stay here tonight? York New is dangerous during the day, it’s suicide to be walking around at night.”
Leorio munched on his dinner as he thought this over. “Alright. Hope your bed is big enough for the both us of.”
“Probably!”
——————
(Name) attempted to untangle herself from her tall friend the next morning, whining. “Leorio, gotta pee!”
“Five more minutes…”
He turned over, pulling her along with him. ‘Now I remember why I moved.’
“KILLUA! GON!”
The two came rushing in, Gon slipping and falling on Leorio’s pants he’d thrown off in the middle of the night. “You pervert, I should have known!”
Killua bonked him on the head, pulling him off the bed and throwing him at the hall. “Woah- MY BACK!”
(Name) was too busy wobbling to the bathroom to notice the two laying into the taller man, rubbing her sleepy eyes.
When she got back, she had to separate the three as they rolled on the floor. “Okay, okay, let him go.”
The four ate breakfast in silence, poor Leorio having a swollen cheek and several bruises. “Sorry, Leorio. You kind of have a reputation…”
Leorio sighed. “It’s alright. You two coming to protect (Name) like that is what you should do.”
But Leorio still tripped Killua when they walked out the door that morning, muttering something about payback. “Don’t wait up on us, sunshine. We’ll be out until the early morning.”
(Name) lingered by the door. “Are you sure you don’t want me to pack you some lunches, then? I-“
He silenced her with a peck on the forehead. “You’re too sweet. You just sit nice and pretty, and I’ll bring you home something nice, alright?”
(Name) felt her face heat up at his words, and to get him back, she fluttered her eyelashes at him. “Leorio, baby, not in front of the kids…”
He attempted to stutter out a response, only for his tongue to be tied. (Name) laughed and pushed him out of the door. “Byee! Don’t get into too much trouble!”
The entire day was spent doing chores, cleaning the house, making premade meals, and standing around waiting for Kurapika to call.
“Hmm…”
She stared at her phone that sat on the table, tilting her head one way then the other. “Hmmmmm…… okay I’m going to call him again.”
Ring…
Ring…
Ring…
“You gonna answer that?”
Kurapika didn’t answer the brute in front of him, only glancing at his phone to see (Name)’s smiling contact photo lighting up the screen. His heart thumped against his chest for just a moment before he steadied himself.
“Where do you want to die?”
“Some place where we won’t cause a disturbance, because you’ll be making a lot of noise when I kill you.”
Uvogin allowed the blonde to leave and grab something.
A shovel, but not just any shovel.
Kurapika stood in front of the storing shed in the back of (Name)’s apartment building. He glanced up to her window, a faint smile on his face when he spotted her silhouette twirling around in what he assumed was her kitchen.
‘That’s how it should be. Her unaware and happy while I carry this heavy burden.’
He put in the combination to the lock around the shed, remembering she told him it was her birthday 2 months ago.
‘Still the same combination? That’s not safe…’
He scolded himself for thinking this. ‘I shouldn’t care, I have more important things to worry about.’
Kurapika searched the shed until he spotted what he was after. ‘There it is…’
It wasn’t perfect, but would do in this situation. It was a large snow shovel, one she’d bought when she moved to York New and found out the snow was heavy in the winter. He didn’t have the heart to tell her at the time that the snow was shoveled by volunteers, meaning it would be useless to her.
But now it would be useful to him.
Kurapika closed the shed and carefully clicked the lock closed, attempting to make it seem like it hadn’t been open in the first.
——————
Kurapika shoveled dirt onto Uvogin’s corpse, eye blank. He glanced down at his dear friends snow shovel, only feeling slightly guilty as the evident dents in the metal.
‘She would forgive me. She always does.’
He made the long journey back to York New, slipping into the back of (Name)’s apartment building. Gone was the careful Kurapika who had been there a few hours before, now he shoved the dirty, bloody shovel into the shed, kicking the door when it caught on the ground.
He didn’t even both to make it seem like it hadn’t been tampered with, he was much too tired, much too emotionally and physically spent to care.
Kurapika lingered near (Name)’s apartment, feeling his legs nearly buckle as he attempted to walk away.
‘Have to… have to go. Can’t stay or…’
He’d subconsciously arrived at her doorstep, hand already reaching out to knock. Before he could stop himself, he knocked on the door twice.
“Be there in a second!”
His lip trembled at the sound of her voice. More than anything, he wanted to be with her right now. Kurapika had just gone through so much, he’d taken his first life.
The door opened slowly, and he pushed himself in, collapsing in her arms. “P-Pika?”
(Name) wasn’t sure how to feel in the moment. Her Pika had returned to her, but not in the way she had expected.
He was covered in blood, face pale and dirty. His clothes were torn, and she wasn’t sure what he’d been through.
“Pika? Are you hurt anywhere?”
Kurapika shook his head slowly, his grip on her tightening when she attempted to set him down. “Okay, okay… let’s try breathing in and out, okay?”
She sat down on the floor, allowing him to bury his head into her shoulder as he caught his breath. It was like standing on his own was impossible then, and he needed her support.
“Alright… there you go.”
She brushed his hair back to get a good look at his face. His eyes were a faint red, face covered in dirt and dried blood. She cupped his cheek, not caring a single bit about the mess collecting on her hand.
“Pika… what can I do? Do you want to talk about it?”
He shook his head, leaning into her touch. “Okay… let’s try some yes or no questions. Shake your head for no, nod for yes.”
He patiently waited for her to continue, eyes fluttering closed. “Do you want to take a bath?”
He nodded, head leaning forward to nuzzle against her shoulder. Although the circumstances weren’t perfect, it still felt nice to have her Pika with her again, especially when he was pulling her closer to him. It reminded her of the Hunter Exam, when they never went long without another.
“Okay, let’s get to the bathroom sweetheart.”
She struggled under his weight as she guided him to the bathroom. He didn’t talk the entire time, silent as she set him on the edge of the tub.
(Name) drew him a bath, occasionally having to struggle out of his grip. He kept a hand on her shirt the entire time, and when she strayed too far he pulled her into his arms, whimpering against her hair. “Pika, I’m not leaving, I’m just grabbing a towel…”
After his bath was ready, she attempted to walk out of the bathroom to give him some privacy.
“Pikaa…”
He was stopping her from leaving again, pulling her back by her hips. “Pika, what do you want?”
He gave her no answer, only pawing at her form like a sad puppy. Thinking he just wanted her near, she turned her head so he could get undressed. After five minutes, she turned to see he hadn’t made any moves to undress at all.
She shook her head in exasperation. “Okay, lift up your arms.”
He did so without question, (Name) pulling his shirt and undershirt off of him. When she moved to hook her thumbs under his pants, it was like he snapped awake from a dream.
Kuraoika shooed her hands away, face a light pink. She raised an eyebrow, then turned around so he could get undressed and sink into the warm water.
She turned back around and sighed. He was just sitting, knees pulled to his chest. “Pika…”
She sat at the edge of the tub, using a cup to wet his hair. Again, he leaned against her, soaking her shirt. “Aww, Pika…”
(Name) didn’t mind that much, though. She knew he wasn’t in the best headspace right now, and wanted to do whatever she could to help.
She washed his hair, giggling when he smiled at the feeling of her fingers massaging soap into his scalp. “That feel nice, Pika?”
He nodded against her, attempting to nuzzle into her soft tummy against but she pushed him back a little. “Hey, mister, you’re still wet. Wait until after your bath!”
He grumbled at that, but listened. She washed his upper half as much as possible, looking away as she washed his chest.
“Okay, Pika. I’m not going any further than that, you’ll have to take over sweetheart.”
She grabbed his hand and placed the rag in it. He stared at the rag, unmoving.
“Pika.”
“…”
“Pika you’ve gotta wash yourself.”
“…”
She took in a deep breath, pinching the bridge of her nose. “I love you, so much. So much.”
She grabbed the rag and turned her head as she washed his legs, the blonde lifting his leg slightly. (Name) wanted to laugh. Usually Kurapika was very independent and easily embarrassed, but now he was completely naked, allowing her to see him at his most vulnerable and leaning into her touch.
But she didn’t laugh. That wouldn’t be right in her mind. Her friend had been through something traumatizing enough to the point he had gone nonverbal. And she couldn’t laugh at that.
“Okay, Pika, you’re all clean.”
She drained the tub, wrapping a fluffy towel around his form and helping him out of the tub. “Come on, let’s get you to bed.”
She sat him down, the blonde yet again attempting to pull her into his embrace again. “Pika, no! I’ve gotta get you some clothes, okay?”
The blonde tugged at her sleeve, looking up at her with watery eyes. “Pika…”
She cupped his cheeks, leaning down to peck his lips. “It’s just for a second, Pika. I’ll be right back.”
He seemed to melt under her touch, eyes fluttering shut as she planted kisses all over his face. “That better?”
He nodded, nuzzling against her palm. “Okay. I’ll give you more kisses in just a minute, just let me go.”
Kurapika considered this, glancing between her and the door before letting her go. (Name) made true on her word, returning only a minute later carrying a pair of pajama pants and a tshirt. “Sorry, it’s Leorio’s clothes, b-“
Kurapika seemed visibly disgusted when she attempted to dress him. He pushed the shirt away, shaking his head. “What… what’s wrong? These are the only clothes that’ll fit you, sweetheart.”
He kept pushing and shaking his head until (Name) sighed. “Well, I guess you can wear my clothes…”
He went still at this, relaxing when she walked over to her closet and pulled out some pajamas again. It was the ugliest t-shirt she owned. It had a screaming possum on the front, the text saying ‘LETS EAT TRASH AND GET HIT BY A CAR” in bright red comic sans font, along with a pair of hello kitty pajama pants.
This time he offered no resistance when she asked him to raise his arms. She slipped the shirt onto him, wincing at the sight of his thin frame. ‘He lost weight…’
He was able to put his pants on himself, following behind her like a lost puppy when she walked into the kitchen. She sat him down and took out one of the premade meals she made that day. ‘I’m so glad I made these…’
She heated it up, watching as Kurapika swayed at the table. He was exhausted, she needed to hurry so he didn’t pass out at her dinner table.
“Here, Pika, it’s hot.”
She set the plate of food in front of him, scolding herself. ‘Of course he can’t feed himself.’
“I’ve got it, sweetheart.”
She blew on a spoonful of food before bringing it to his lips. He took a bite, perking up a little. She continued, but apparently was too slow, because the blonde snatched the spoon from her hand and began to shovel his meal into his mouth.
“Woah, slow down, you’re gonna choke.”
He didn’t listen. Kurapika had trouble eating recently. Nothing tasted good, everything bland after he decided to cut his beloved (Name) out of his life, but right now the food in front of him tasted like heaven.
He finished his plate, sipping on the drink she’d offered him moments before. After that, he rubbed at his eyes, swaying again.
“Sleepy?”
He nodded slowly, allowing her to guide him to her bedroom. “Let’s get you tucked in.”
She tucked him into one side of her bed, making sure he was comfortable before climbing into the other side. “Goodnight, Pika.”
He said nothing as he scooted closer to her, burying his face in her chest. She sighed, running her fingers through his pretty blonde hair.
“Thank you…”
It was so quiet that (Name) wasn’t sure she’d heard anything at all, but he continued to mutter thanks and apologies against her shirt. “Sorry… so sorry, (Name).”
“What are you sorry for, Pika? You didn’t do anything wrong?”
He didn’t answer her, and when she felt her shirt grow wet with tears, she could only sigh. “I love you, Pika. You’re not a burden to me at all, so don’t apologize for this.”
If only she knew that he was apologizing for who he’s become in the future, what he’d do to her to further his cause. Maybe she would have been less forgiving.
Just maybe.
(Name) kissed the top of his head, beginning to him as he clung to her. His body wracked with sobs, his hands clawing at her back as he broke down. “Please… please… don’t hate me, (Name). Please…”
She was quiet, not knowing how to respond. (Name) could never hate him. In the morning, she could attempt to ease his fears, let him know just how much he meant to her.
“Shh, shh…” she cooed, giving him kisses all over his face. He accepted those kisses, sighing in contentment. Kurapika peered up at her with those pretty brown eyes, leaning into her touch.
“Lets rest, okay?”
He didn’t want to rest. In the morning, he would become a stranger to her, but his heavy eyelids wouldn’t allow him to stay awake. “… okay…”
She pulled him into her embrace, the feeling of her warm hands on his back allowing him to relax and sleep.
——————
Kurapika pulled on his clothes, glancing at the sleeping girl with half lidded eyes.
He bent down, brushing her hair out of her face so he could take a good look at her sleeping face. ‘So pretty…’
Kurapika stared at her for a while, feeling himself being drawn towards her. He shook his head, pressing a lingering kiss to her forehand before standing up.
“Goodbye, (Name). I wish you the best, truly.”
He lingered in the doorway, glancing down to the shirt he discarded on the floor, the one she dressed him in the night before.
‘She won’t miss this…’
He picked it up, placing it in his satchel before pulling on his tabard. He looked over himself in the mirror. Thanks to her help, he looked… passable. Clean, but nothing would help in hiding the dark circles under his eyes and slight hollowness in his cheeks.
Kurapika spared her one last glance before leaving her apartment.
‘I’ll miss you, angel.’

Gon, Shounen, and The Importance of Setting
Since I’m rewatching hxh 1999, I’ve made a ‘couple’ notes on the many things I noticed. Somehow, during Zevil Island, this essay was born. Please don’t question it. The comprehensive commentary on the HxH 1999 Hunter Exam Arc will be out soon.
At this moment in the show, Gon is tailing Hisoka on Zevil Island, who is looking for his next victim. The moment Hisoka strikes, Gon will take the badge. Of course, this means forfeiting the life of the victim. I’ve written briefly about this before, but characters like Hisoka and challenges like Zevil Island differentiate hxh from other shounen. You need to be ruthless and practical in order to even have a shot at becoming a Hunter. You need to be ruthless and practical to take someone’s badge. Characters like Killua fall into both, Hisoka the former, and Leorio and Kurapika the latter.
Gon, at the beginning of hxh, falls into neither. He’s kind, naive, helpful and determined. He believes strongly in his own judgement and almost never allows others to deter him once he’s made up his mind (notable that trait is often commented upon to be rather negative, while in a series like Naruto he would have received admiration and praise for it). Togashi… messes with that perception a little. Gon is a kid, and as the series progresses more and more defined by his setting. Most other shounen series don’t literally necessitate their protagonist sacrificing other people in order to get what they want. In fact, that kind of cost is typically deemed unacceptable. But in the world of hxh, sacrifice of others is acceptable and even encouraged.
When Pokkle, a Hunter exam applicant, shoots (intending to kill) his target, who survives but is temporarily paralyzed by poison, it is viewed by the audience as ‘okay’, because that’s just what Phase 4 of the Hunter Exam expects. But when Gon follows his example and waits for Hisoka to strike, thereby forfeiting the life of his victim, suddenly it’s a problem. Even worse: a morality dissonance bred by audience expectations. A bit of flavor, in my shounen protagonist? It’s more likely than you think.
Audiences who look back after CAA and who may have watched a certain… misleading YouTube video, will start to point fingers and call names. Isn’t it awful, that Gon considers jumping in only when Leorio and Kurapika are in danger? Why shouldn’t he put his life on the line for a stranger, like Naruto or Goku or Izuku? Much less someone who’s going to give him the opportunity to take Hisoka’s badge, which is something he needs in order to reach his goal? The answer is simple, and acts as a point of reference for Gon whenever situations start to get a little murky. His actions are guided by a childish if understandable moral compass: “I like this person / this person helped me = they must be a good person! I’ll be nice to them and help them in return.” Contrasted by, “This person hurt one of my friends / is directly preventing me from reaching my goal = they must be a bad person! I’ll do what I can to stop them, no matter the cost.” Accompanied by, “Strangers? Well, as long as it doesn’t affect me, I don’t care.” Those are not the morals of a psychopath, sociopath, or monster. It’s the morality of a relatively sheltered child. He doesn’t have much worldly experience, and is as shaped by the world of hxh as middle schoolers are by their favorite streamers- for better or for worse.
Back to Zevil Island. His use of another’s death to take Hisoka’s badge is perhaps the first instance of him prioritizing practicality - something valued and encouraged by everyone around him - over his nature. His nature, too - that in and of itself is seen as strange and out-of-place, rather than something Hunters should aspire to be. In fact, during the Hunter Exam, characters continually remark how odd it is that Gon wants to help people and be nice. He’s told to shut up with the “let’s do it together!” speeches and that he’s a dumb kid who doesn’t know any better. His personality stands in stark contrast to the cynical Hunter applicants; Leorio, Kurapika, and Killua included. Even so, it’s something that brings them together.
My point is that Gon is, naturally, a shounen protagonist, and as the audience we know exactly what to expect from him. Except, well… it’s Togashi. We don’t.
Because up until this point, he hasn’t strayed much from the typical ‘good boy shounen protagonist’ - popularized by Dragon Ball and Naruto, and more recently, BNHA - he’s been determined and kind and childish, just like them. All along, though, due to the setting and characters he’s met, he’s been learning something quite the opposite: that apathy and a certain degree of callousness are acceptable, and even necessary to achieve your goal, whatever it may be. It’s a subversion of expectations. Not ‘The Last Jedi’ kind of subversion; the kind that just feels wrong, because as the audience you know how this is supposed to play out, and this ain’t it chief.
On Zevil Island, stealing Hisoka’s badge by sacrificing another (who would not have survived even if he had interfered) is one of the first instances of Gon putting what is ‘necessary’ in front of who he naturally is. It’s being practical. If Kurapika or Killua had done the same, I believe there would be nowhere near the same degree of bitching. Within the narrative he is both rewarded and punished for this act - look at that, consequences. Just as Gon had sacrificed another, so too was he sacrificed. He got Hisoka’s badge, at the cost of total humiliation. He did as he had been taught, compromised on total moral righteousness (in the eyes of the audience, at least. His own compass would not have qualified such a sacrifice as ‘wrong’) and received a reward (Hisoka’s badge). Positive reinforcement, obviously, reinforces behavior. So the fact that some people have the truly believe Gon to be a psychopath, sociopath, or ‘monster’ and use his behavior during the Hunter exam as ‘early proof’ is ridiculous to me. It’s just a subversion of our expectations of the ‘good boy protagonist’ by placing them in a setting with uncomfortable characters and situations which force apathy while prioritizing decision-making over heart.
During the Hunter Exam, Gon is rewarded by the narrative for his natural kindness with his friends’ survival and his insistence on making lasting connections leaves an impression upon everyone who interacts with him. By Chimera Ant, he’s being punished for his childish nature, the narrative shining light on the danger of his selfish and single-minded determination to the point of self-destruction. The usual ‘shonen protagonist emotional outburst leading to triumph’ are shown as fits of rage stemming from lack of understanding of complex moral situations. Bargaining with Pitou for Komugi’s life fully displays his apathy for strangers combined with utter moral condemnation of Pitou. As with the Hunter Exam, this ‘practical’ way of thinking was similarly encouraged by the people around him before the mission began. “Thinking of the Ants as people lead to weakness”. And what would happen to Gon, then, if his anger faded? Could he still save Kite? Stand up to Pitou even while knowing he’s on a suicide mission? After it started, it was already too late. Finding Pitou, utterly helpless while saving someone else after she had murdered someone close to Gon in cold blood, was too much for him. His morals and preconceived notions had never been challenged to such a degree, which on top of the emotional duress and unprocessed grief caused him to act out (as like, a normal 12 y/o would). Since he had already decided to go down in flames, he pushed Killua away. Ironically, his bond with Killua, formed during a time before self-destruction and disregard for others had been reinforced time and time again, is what saved him in the end.
Being cynical and angry and apathetic, as the world eventually led Gon to become during his downward spiral in CAA, would not have saved Killua. Gon’s earnestness and unending kindness is what taught Killua to stand up for himself and be a kid again. The world of hxh is cruel, merciless, and full of people who think they know better than anyone else. By forcing Gon to change and lose most of his core character traits, we realize how important a person like him is to the rest of the cast, who had so few genuinely good and kind things around them. Gon’s loss of innocence is both terrifying and heartbreaking. He, quite literally, forces himself to ‘grow up’. But, as shown in the election arc, that is not who Gon is. He’s just a nice kid who wanted to see his dad, someone who learned and was taught some truly bad behaviors along the way but now seeks reflection and growth. The CAA also demonstrates to the audience his true importance to the story: the bonds he forms, by being himself, by being kind in a place that has to spawn satan to change him, he saves others and himself. Without Gon, Killua would have continued suffering at the hands of his family until he took over a position he didn’t want. Alluka would have remained trapped in the basement. Kurapika would have died fighting the Spiders. Leorio never would have passed the Hunter Exam. Whether you like him or not, you cannot have Hunter x Hunter without Gon.
Togashi would continue breaking down the shounen protagonist archetype until the conclusion of CAA, but Zevil Island, I think, is our first real glimpse that Gon is not quite typical. I look forward to seeing what direction Togashi takes him after he reflects on Whale Island for awhile (awaiting the Gyro confrontation in 2090), as well as how he’ll similarly break down Kurapika in the current arc. If you got this far, thank you for reading.
* To clarify: I am not saying Gon became selfish due to the setting of hxh. That potential was always there. However, the setting and characters therein, as well as Gon’s own self-destructive behavior as a result of his extremely low self-worth, allow this selfishness to manifest in very obvious and dangerous ways (i.e. He forced Genthru to acknowledge him by allowing himself to be blown up after he was called weak, his solo crusade against Pitou as a form of needless repentance while pushing away Killua, etc.). One of the first appearances of this slight change in attitude is Zevil Island, where that line of thinking is encouraged and necessary by the exam itself and the people around him. Those obvious manifestations of selfishness or other, more overlooked negative qualities, and how the narrative puts it on blast, differentiates him from his similar shounen peers. Now that he has time to reflect on Whale Island after reaching his goal, Togashi will hopefully continue to develop him in a new and interesting direction.

It was late evening when you heard the knocking on your door. It had already become dark outside and you wondered who was knocking that late at night on your door. You curiously put your mug of tea down and walked towards the door. But before you were about to open the door you froze. What if it was someone dangerous? After all it was suspicious that someone would knock on your door at such an hour. “Who’s there?”, you asked through the door. For a few seconds no one answered before you heard someone answering:”It’s me.” You recognized that voice instantly. It was the voice from the guy who hadn’t gave you any space to breathe the last few weeks. The guy who had sent you tons of gifts. But what was Pokkle doing here? Since when did he know where you lived? That was alarming. You stood for a while just unsure there, not knowing if you should let him in. He was creepy. His dedication for you was more than just worrying. He always told you that he would do everything for you. At first you hadn’t given that too much thought since pretty much everyone said this when declaring his or her love to the person they loved. But the scary thing about Pokkle was that he really meant it. He had proofed it to you more than once. This should actually be really sweet, but it wasn’t. It was terrifying. He didn’t even seem to care that he might bring himself in danger just to grant you your wish. He was of course a Hunter and possessed some power, but he wasn’t almighty.
“(y/n). Please...please let me in.”, you heard him begging. His voice sounded weak and worn out. He sounded exhausted. Now you started getting worried. It was getting darker and darker and you didn’t know which people might linger at such times out there. Letting him for a little while until he had collected his strength back wouldnt hurt you, would it? You slowly turned the doorknob around and opened the door. “Hey Pokkle. What are you doing that late at-“ You stopped abruptly when you took his full appearance in. He was covered in a dark red and sticky liquid. It was splashed over his whole body. It looked terrifying alike to blood. That was very alarming. “W-what ha-happened here? W-were you attacked?”, you stuttered out, your hands having started to tremble. Pokkle glanced up to you. “Y-you’re worried about me?”, he asked with a small smile on his face. Was he happy that you had asked him this?!Shouldn’t he have other worries right now?! You stood frozen on your place there, your eyes searching for any wounds on his body. But frightened you needed to discover that he didn’t have any wounds. At least not any who seemed to be responsible for all the blood which covered him. It wouldn’t have been possible though. With the amount of blood covering him he should have already been died. But the question right now was when it wasn’t his which one’s was it then?
You snapped out of your trance when Pokkle suddenly groaned and clutched his left side. He looked like he was barely able to stand by now. So he was injured! You needed to help him! “C-come in.”, you stuttered. He smiled once again, but when he wanted to step in he nearly lost his balance. You quickly rushed to his side, wanting to help him. You hesitated for a short moment upon seeing all the blood from close up. But you swallowed all your fear temporarily down and put his arm around your shoulder, supporting his body on yours. You flinched when you felt the cooled down blood soaking your clothes and skin as well, but you tried your hardest to ignore it. You were busily thinking about where to lay him down. If you would bring him to the couch you would have to throw it away because you doubted you would be able to wash the blood out of the fabric. Your bed wasn’t an option either. What to do now? As if Pokkle knew what you were thinking he suddenly muttered out:”Bring me to your bathroom. I can lay down in the bathtub. Like this I won’t dirty any of your things too much.” You glanced worriedly at him. “C-can you walk in your current condition stairs?” He nodded weakly.
In the end it turned out to be a good idea to go to the bathroom. Not only had you your first aid set in there, you were also able to clean Pokkle and yourself a bit up. You felt like throwing up when you had seen how the water had darkened instantly as soon as it had made contact with Pokkle. But it seemed like you had been also right about that this wasn’t Pokkle’s blood. It had just been his clothes that had been stained with blood. But you also knew that he had suffered some damage from whatever he had done. But this...this surpassed your worries at the beginning. His whole left side was shining in black and purplish colors. You could only imagine with how extreme force he must have been hit. When you stretched your hand out to caress over his wound he hissed painfully when you traced your fingers over it. You were more than sure that he had broken his rips. He must had gotten into a fight to receive such a terrible wound. You suspected that a powerful punch had created this damage. But you also kind of knew what must have happened to the other guy judging by all the blood that had once covered Pokkle. He looked terribly pale, was sweating and his breath was shaking due to the pain it caused him to let his chest raise and fall with each breath. But he was still alive different from the guy he had fought. There was no way someone could have survived with that much blood loss.
“P-Pokkle?”, you asked him hesitantly. He glanced at your direction. “What is it my angel?” You would ignore that now. There were more important things to do. “What happened to you? You must have gotten into a very serious fight to suffer an such intense injury.” When you mentioned this he seemed to tense up suddenly. “I-I’m sorry.”, he murmured. “Sorry? For what are you sorry?”, you asked him worried. “For making you worry so much. If I would have been stronger this wouldn’t have happened. I failed you.” You were confused, not quite understanding what he was talking about. “I’m supposed to protect you. But look at me now. I couldn’t do anything against that guy to avoid his attacks. The next time I kill someone I have to plan more carefully and be able to react faster.” Kil...ling? You knew that he had killed whoever had caused him his broken rips, but you had until now thought that he had been attacked. But from what he had been saying it almost sounded like he had planned to kill the other person, meaning that the person had only defended themself when hitting him. But why would he kill someone and talk so openly about it in front of you.
“What did-did you do? Y-you killed someone?”, you asked terrified. He looked with an almost pleading look in his eyes at you. “I did it for you. This guy... He was danger to you. I needed to get rid of him in order to make sure that you would stay safe.” You stepped scared away from the bathtub. He killed someone who might have been danger for you? “B-but why not just telling the police about him? They could have solved this more peaceful and you wouldn’t have hurt yourself so badly!” Pokkle chuckled a bit, but quickly stopped because it hurt him too much. “I’ve informed myself about this guy. There would have been no way that he would have ever let himself get captured by the police. He was a criminal on the run who killed everyone who was a threat to him. He had been hiding in your district. And I was just scared that you might cross paths with him and he would kill you. I couldn’t let that happen so I decided to kill him. No one will miss him anyways.” There was no empathy in his voice when he spoke the last sentence. You didn’t know how to react to all of this. But you only knew that you felt highly frustrated. But why? Because this man was so careless about his own well-being when you were involved? If he would die someday then it would be all your fault. Then you would blame yourself for killing him.
“Please stop this all.” Your voice was quiet and shaking, but he still heard you. “W-what?” You angrily looked him in the eyes, tears pricking the corner of your eyes. “Stop doing that to yourself! Do you even think about what might happen to you if you’re being so reckless just to make me happy?! It doesn’t make me happy to see you suffering like this! What do you even want to achieve by doing this all?!” For a few seconds he looked shocked before he started shaking even more. “I want you to accept me! That’s all I ever wanted! And I won’t stop until you do so! Even if it kills me! You don’t like it to see me suffer?! Then just accept me so I won’t get hurt anymore! I suffer everyday because I feel like I’m not worthy as long as you don’t accept me!” His face twisted into a painful mask, but you didn’t know if it was because of the broken rips or because of his hurt feelings. Suddenly Pokkle grabbed your hand and clinched onto it like his life depended on it. “Please just accept me. I’ll do anything for you. I’ll become stronger so that something like this won’t happen again. Then you don’t have to worry about me anymore.”
You blinked once. Twice. Then you ripped your hand away from him, making him flinch visibly. “What is wrong with you? Why are you doing this to yourself? Have you lost your mind?” With each question you threw at him he seemed to make himself smaller and smaller. “...I’ll never accept you. Not if you keep doing this to yourself. We should probably also stop seeing each other.” Your voice sounded surprisingly cold. You didn’t know why you acted that way. Why were you so mean? Probably because you had been too nice to him. You had always complimented him when he had given you gifts and did everything for you. That had been your mistake. You had given him the feeling that you appreciated his gestures, causing him to slip farther and farther into his delusions. You needed to get stricter if you wanted this to end. “I’ll bring you some clothes which will fit you. You’ll clean yourself up. Then we’ll drive immediately to a hospital so that your wounds will be taken care of properly. And after that the both of us will go separate ways.” You tried your hardest to not lose your composure when you saw the incredibly hurt look on his face. “Try to hurry up.” With these words you turned around to leave him alone.
“You don’t understand! If you accept me now, I’ll be your slave!” In the next moment you saw from the corner of your eyes how he jumped out of the bathtub and raced towards you, grabbing your arm to turn you around so that you looked him directly in his face. He had barely the strength to stand and supported himself on your shoulders. “You...you can’t do this to me. What am I even supposed to do without you? I have no meaning in my life when you leave me. Please don’t do this to me.” You couldn’t even imagine in how much pain he was by now, physically and mentally. You stared with huge eyes at him. What were you supposed to do now? If you would continue to reject him you were afraid that he would do something stupid. Would it be better to just accept him so that you could contract his actions a bit better? What was the right choice?

This is purely selfish, I’m writing for myself ❤️ still hope you enjoy tho!
You hadn’t understood why? Why your heart, in a flash suddenly belonged to this man? It was love at first sight, or the closest thing to it. You truly believed it was love at first sight now at least. Right now as you watched him, he was accusing Kurapika. Something you would never do in a million years. Kurapika kurta... you wouldn’t mess with him. Though he proved himself a trustworthy partner in this test, almost a friend. He was a weird case maybe because you were not used to the coldness he offered up to you, but you would say you certainly were friends with Gon and Leorio. Killua was another one, you weren’t too sure about, but you would certainly call him your friend. You’d just had to make sure he wasn’t in a 10 mile radius, and you’d be fine. If he didn’t kill you first. To be honest you were still quite shaken up by the whole scene of the last stage of the hunter exam. You were just happy you passed and so did he.
-After the gon and illumi thing-
Pokkle had apologized to Kurapika letting him and the rest of you guys know he’d be heading off to be a beast hunter and he’d be there to help if anyone of you needed him. So kind, so sweet. He apologized! He could see he’s own faults. That took a good person to see that and also own up to it. Even he admitted to a group of people he would probably never see again, that he was envious because of he’s own shortcomings. Though that had little affect in steering you away from your own adoration for the new full fledged hunter. As he said goodbye, and walked away. You had made a decision. Not just for the chance to see him again and be by his side but because truly you wanted to be a beast hunter as well. You hated the thought of animals being hunted and sold. You would make sure you’d never be like that no matter the money, the price. You’d be more of a behavioral scientist for these unknown animals. Maybe a vet of sorts. The future would tell you. Best not to worry.
You told the boys that helped you so much, The reason you even passed. A thanks, your number, and a good luck on getting killua back.
“And tell him hey for me when you see him!” You said looking back to your old friends. Now you knew they all were your friends.
“Of course, will do!!!” Gon said cheerfully, while waving.
“You be safe.” Kurapika said with a slight smile.
“See ya, later.” Leorio said holding a thumbs up.
You waved.
“See ya.”
Catching up to Pokkle. Out of breath you said.
“Wait-t... *puff* ugh- ugh umm *pant*”
“Holy sh- are you ok?!”
“Ye-aaaa I’m finee.”
Not able to catch your breath. Pokkle took you to a bench.
“You’re sure you fine?”
“Yea.”
Still out of breath, but getting better. Holding a hand to your chest.
“How did you ever pass the first stage?” He said jokingly. You wished you could laugh.
“I want to join you.”

                                                                          -- Pitou, probably
Tumblr media
I’m just going to send a copy of the Capital to every chimera ant

Tumblr media
Pitou is so handsome and scary
that look is soooo good
Tumblr media
not only are you PARALYZED

Tumblr media
WHAAAAT 250 humans; well fuck
that must be like 25 per squad on average
Tumblr media
The King is growing
Tumblr media
Hagya is more the lion than the human he’s made of which is quite interesting
Tumblr media
BUT HE LEARNT
he can learn now, he’s not limited to his current strength.
I kinda like this about Leol
Kite will follow them that way
