i just realized this parallel so let me share....

in detective comics #571 bruce and robin!jason face the scarecrow (i first mentioned this comic here).

how does batman overcome scarecrow's fear gas? well... by "replacing the fears...with the most terrible fear [he] could conceive." what is bruce's most terrible fear, you ask? the one that shielded him against scarecrow?

jason's death. yep. ouch.

if the tragic foreshadowing isn't enough, let's fast forward to batman #629, the penultimate issue in the as the crow flies arc which was probably mainly an excuse for winick to foreshadow under the hood, idk.

this issue is notable for having this WILD EMOTIONAL IM GONNA START BITING intense scene where bruce has a fear toxin induced hallucination. what does he see?

a resurrected jason !!!! taunting bruce !!!

"no matter what I do, no matter how many I murder-- and there'll be a lot of them-- you'll never be able to stop me. you love me too much. that's so much worse than the rest of them, isn't it?"

aside from becoming one of my favorite jason quotes (and it's NOT EVEN really  JASON) ... this is such a fun contrast/parallel to 'tec #571, because it’s like all those elements that made up bruce’s fear of jason dying are now forming bruce’s fear of jason returning...

he loves jason so much,, except instead of fearing losing jason, he’s faced with the fear of jason using that same love against him. bruce knows jason knows how much bruce loves him and that’s sadly going to form the basis of the red hood..... jason’s fury that love wasn’t enough to avenge him,,,,,, and bruce’s subconscious acknowledgment that he loves jason too much to stop him, that jason’s different from the other villains because of this core connection bruce and jason have......it’s the LOVE......,,,,.

because it IS so much worse than the rest of them isn’t it!!!

I’m still fucked up about misinterpreting Steve saying “didn’t know if you thought of me as your boyfriend” to him fishing around for Eddie to claim him, to prove he wanted him around. He was always pointing out that he couldn’t tell if Eddie wanted him there and I thought he was looking for Eddie to say something, stop him going off to find someone else to date. But he was just trying to downplay what they had, make it not real bc of his internalized homophobia, Vio I’m unwelllll. No wonder Eddie’s low key relishing in torturing him lol. Oh is it tomorrow yet? I’m rereading the last two chapters so everything is fresh in my mind again 🥰

OOOOOH okay, that's like. very interesting!! that original interpretation is definitely more sympathetic to steve, which 😭 i get. but i'll get into it a bit —

it was definitely a cruel comment. below-the-belt. like, not only downplaying their relationship, but putting eddie in the position where he'd be stupid to see it as anything more (and honestly, what can eddie say to it other than 'no i didn't').

if you consider the exchange that directly precedes it - steve tells him he wants to start dating, and then:

Steve waits for Eddie to say yes, because that would help in some way. Eddie doesn't say anything at all. Just smokes and rubs his knuckle against the seam of the couch. Acts like Steve isn't there. Talking to him.

and we know that steve hates being ignored, lol.

"Why would it bother me?" Eddie finally says, and Steve frowns.

steve is kinda pissed because he's not in control of the situation, and eddie turned the question back on him. so steve whips out the boyfriend comment. he was trying to hurt eddie - i don't think he'd put too much thought into the boyfriend thing before this conversation.

it's one of his meaner moments 💙

Calling it right now, Eddie’s going to realize and come to terms about how he needs to be on the field to serve his purpose. Not only for himself but to have his partners back. Because he knows he’s the safest by Buck’s side because they always have each other’s backs. Therapy is going to make him come to terms with a lot of things and I’m still betting money on him coming to terms with his feelings for Buck. He’s going to be back where he belongs, next to Buck.
