Excuse me but am I the only one that Hates Zukka? I rather much prefer Zutara over that ship and mostly I think Zukka shippers only ship Zukka because it’s Gay and nothing else! LOL!!

Tbh, I kinda ship it for shits and giggles, but after all this anti discourse happened, it’s really left a bad taste in my mouth. It really makes me not want to associate myself with Zukka shippers at all, especially if they’re from the “new wave” of fans.

And yeah, you’re onto something there. A few of the antis that have come to ATLA used to be VLD stans, they probably saw the blue/red aesthetic and thought “K L A N C E”.

I feel like If Lance had become the black paladin and got accepted when he went into the black lion (after shiro disappeared), he never would’ve grown with Keith, he never would’ve accepted Keith or accepted himself and his place on the team, and Keith wouldn’t have grown himself to become a better person and to connect deeper with the other paladins, ESPECIALLY Lance (even though it was ruined by the space whale)

In my opinion I don’t think that scene where Keith saved Shiro in the black lion should’ve happened, Instead I feel like red should’ve swooped up and saved him on Keith’s behalf or maybe she’d scoop up Keith after he got hit with one of the geysers and got tossed up in the air or something like that THEN they could rescue Shiro in the RED lion because him using black just shows that apparently anyone can fly black even without experience or any sort of leadership skills, it makes flying the black lion feel less important

And I might be biased as a klancer but I genuinely feel like after Keith got back from the space whale and brushed Lance off that maybe Keith could be stuck in a similar situation, except instead he’d be in shiros position, and Lance would have to fly black to save him

I feel like that would’ve fit so much better because at that time Lance had genuine progress as a leader, and learned to push through his own jealousy, accept himself, and feel happy about his place on the team

Not to mention how protective Lance has always been of them in the first place

Maybe Black should’ve shut Keith out after he came back, (and everyone else at first) but then later that night maybe Lance runs into him and they start a conversation about everything that happened on the space whale, krolia, Keith’s mental state, and finally the black lion

Maybe they decide to go into the hangar together to just look at her but instead, she wakes up the moment they both look up at her (I’m just using female pronouns for the lions as a baseline since they all have the shape of female lions) and she lets them both in

But when Keith sits down in the pilots chair she doesn’t move and doesn’t talk to him so Keith then has the realization of- ‘I think she’s talking to you, Lance’ and surely enough when Lance sits in the pilots chair she starts to purr

And instead of being boastful about it I can imagine him being excited and happy but determined, to make Keith and the rest of the team proud of him and to show his worth

(I hope that made sense)

OK so as much as I have said Lance had leadership qualities, I would like to clarify one thing.

He should not have been chosen as Black Paladin in season 3. He wasn't ready then. None of them were.

The rejection of it, and his following support of Keith as leader, was what sobered him up a bit, I think.

He needed to learn that being Black Paladin wasn't just for honor and glory and all that. It was literally having the lives of everyone in the Galaxy in your hands.

I think part of the reason Lance stepped up and matured and became more of a leader on the team was because he saw how much Keith was struggling. Because he still saw Keith as the golden boy around that time, and to see him struggling and failing would have been the spark that changed Lance's perspective on a lot of things – including how he saw himself and his own abilities.

I like your idea of Black not accepting Keith at first and then only opening up for both of them after they've done some quality bonding and opening up of their own.

And I agree about how much of a deus ex machina it was for Keith to just be able to pilot Black to save Shiro. I mean – we've seen Red, at least act on her own, so why couldn't it have been that? Black saving Shiro?

Or – and I'm saying this just because I wanted this to happen so badly – what if neither lion ever saved them, and instead Keith had to fight off those creatures by himself and the stress of it made him turn Galra? Because that episode happened before the Blade of Marmora trials, and it would have opened so many doors for character development for both Shiro and Keith. It would have also explained why in the episode they fought each other later on, Shiro said something like "That's the Keith I remember."

My ideal situation is having Keith and Lance co-lead, though. Because even in the scarce moments we were shown in canon, we could see how they worked better when they worked together. You know, good team and all that.

Sometimes, I look at my past posts and wonder just how atrocious my english actually is. Sorry to all native speakers, for all the horrible things I’ve done to your language. Season8, episode 6! Let’s go! :

Why am I so disinterested in the actual plot of this season?

Can I just have a cute slice of life-episode again? Which focuses on the characters instead of the plot?

Moustache man listed off various planets, on which Evangelion Robots landed and ... Man. Are these names supposed to tell us somethig? Should we know all these various fictional planets by heart?

I know that Keith’s design’s supposed to be sharp and angular, because ~edge~. But like, during that one frame! That was taken to an extreme. Honey, watch out, you’ll poke someones eyes out with your chin and nose

Surely space witch doesn’t need all this Quintessence. She’s just doing her whole evil thing now, for the sake of being evil

They’re all going to the magic planet and Allura just said “It’s time to end this war”. Sweety, there’s still half a season left...

Was this one scene supposed to parrallel space witch and Allura? Because that just doesn’t feel right

Tbh I think most people found the sunset scene romantic because of 1) sunsets are usually just associated with romance and 2) the way Keith talked to him, and the face he made.

I’m pretty sure you get that (?) but to me, it’s romantic if you change the context and wording, but the actual scene is like… very pep-talky

yeah i get it but i still think it’s idiotic to look at a scene wherein keith is giving lance a pep talk before he goes on a date with a woman and be like “omg top 10 klance moments!!!1!1!” like ok sure take out the context and wording and you are literally just left with the fact that it takes place during a sunset. the creators were Mocking us guys this isn’t something the klancers can reclaim, it’s very nature resists it.

like i could take the context and wording out from the moment when keith looks at shiro and says “you’re like a brother” and say see! it’s a she1th scene! but we can all agree that i would be incorrect in claiming that, right? even though keith looks really emotional and loving? even though keith is fighting to save someone? that could be romantically coded. but it’s not. or, if it is, it’s done so not because the substance of the scene is romantic, but because the writers are immorally baiting the weirdo ship. either way it’s not genuine in any way, and it’s very nature resists reclamation by she1thers (though they do anyway, much like klancers do the sunset scene)…do u see what i’m getting at here?

every few days i see posts (on here and on twitter) claiming that small keith x big lance is simply The Correct Way to enjoy klance and every few days i lose more of my brain cells SO

this is a taller keith & same height keith positivity post. to all my fellow klancers who just don’t enjoy shorter/smaller keith: same hat!! i love you!!

i know a lot of people miss s1-s3 klance (and honestly i do too), but on some level i’ve found it soured for me simply because others often use it as an excuse to argue how much “better” shorter!keith is. and i find it incredibly frustrating to be alienated from some of the very best of klance simply because it is so often weaponized (condescendingly, i might add) against my preferences.

i’ve been ignoring it for a while in the hopes that eventually the fandom would be so small that nobody would really make comments about it anymore, but it’s been years and that still isn’t the case, so i’m making this post so that people who scroll through the kl tag and engage with the fandom in general don’t constantly feel peer pressured into liking what the more vocal fans like.

so if you are one of the people feeling pressured/alienated/annoyed & you’re reading this right now: you’re cool dude, keep doin what you’re doin. if you are a creator who has gotten patronizing anons in your inbox on the subject: please ignore them, your contributions to this fandom are loved and appreciated by so many

i know this is a ridiculous topic and honestly i don’t even want to have this conversation, because i’m perfectly content to enjoy what i enjoy and let other people enjoy what they enjoy. i am merely frustrated by those who don’t seem inclined to allow others the same courtesy, and instead insist on the superiority of their preferences.

that’s not to say this is a one-way street. i know there have been instances of unnecessary commentary from people who prefer taller!keith. but i will say that i don’t see it anywhere near as often, nor with as much smug condescension, and that’s why i felt it was important for me to make this post.

we all love the same two goofy fictional characters. it’d be really nice if we could co-exist without the snide holier-than-thou mockery (or worse, the occasional aggressive belittling left in people’s inboxes). it’s so draining, it really is. i know it might feel cute and funny to say stuff like that and put it in the kl tag or in someone’s inbox, but i promise it’s not. i promise all it has done for the past several years is cause people aggravation and exhaustion when they just want to enjoy their ship in peace.

so yeah. end rant i guess. shippers, keep shipping exactly the way you want to ship. don’t let anyone else pressure or annoy you out of what you like, and don’t be the one to do that to other people either. what you like is cool for you, but that’s just it. it’s for you, not for everyone. and that’s okay

Is it safe to re-enter the VLD fanbase?

I had some ideas for some music videos (and crack vids) back in the day, but didn’t have the means to collect the necessary footage to make them real.

Now I have the technology, but I’m terrified of being virtually drawn & quartered by the Klancers for making an Allurance video (I don’t necessarily ship either pairing, but there was that One Scene in Season 8 that gave me super strong Tangled vibes).

Or unintentionally upsetting everyone who’s still justifiably pissed about Allura’s conclusion by setting some choice clips in the finale to the final reprise from the Broadway production of a certain Disney movie about talking cats. I thought if it was framed as Allura ascending to goddesshood instead of just dying because “dramatic sacrifice”, it might make the finale feel less empty.

The Two Big Bads That VLD Pulled In Season 8

I wasn’t prepared to be disappointed today. As far as vld goes, I’ve always considered myself to be a fairly neutral fan; I disapprove of the hate directed towards the creators, despite distancing myself from canon; I never expected Klance to be endgame, and was prepared for shitty lgbt rep. It was disappointing, but I was chill with it. I’m here to have a good time, and know better than to get too hung up on the show’s direction.

However, as the title suggests, I was upset today. Of course there were flaws in season 8, of course the writing left a lot to be desired; all of these things were expected. But today I’m here to talk about the two things that vld really fucked up on:

1. They killed Allura

Allura is one of the most important characters I have ever had the honor of witnessing on screen. The moment she was introduced, she became a role model for so many young girls, so many poc, anyone who has lost something dear to them, and everyone else who found a bit of themselves in her. She was this powerful black princess who despite all the shit she went through always pulled through. She was an inspiration.

Lauren Montgomery herself said that she was traumatized when 80s Voltron killed off this strong female character she so passionately looked up to. Yet, here she is- killing off the same character, the same representation. It is my dearest hope that all young girls of color who watch season 8 know that Allura will live on in each and every one of them. That her strength and heart can still inspire them to do amazing things and to be proud of who they are. I know it’s not fair, darlings, but Allura will always believe in you. No matter what.

It didn’t have to be like this.

2. Lance never lets go

I’ve never been an allurance shipper. I’ve always thought the pair had potential, but that their arcs in canon didn’t meld nicely, and that one of them would end up being pushed aside in order for the other to develop. When I realized that this was going to be exactly what happened, I kind of just accepted that Lance would be put through some shitty writing. However, this runs a lot deeper then shaky romantic plot lines. This is about how vld portrayed unhealthy grieving.

Lance loved Allura. Of course it’s okay that he wanted to honor her after death; she deserved to be remembered, and honestly I would’ve been upset if he moved on right away. However, Lance didn’t just honor her- the rest of his life was centered around Allura. He became a farmer, abandoning his dreams of becoming a pilot, and surrounded himself with things she loved. He never allowed himself to move on, to find other people (not to be a klancer on main but *ahem*keith*ahem*) and create his own legacy.

This is not what healthy greiving looks like. I truly hope that young people dealing with loss don’t believe this to be the right road to recovery. You are more than your grief, and Lance is more than Allura. He deserved so, so much more.

Anyways, despite everything, I beg of everyone to not go attacking the creators and most definitely not the VAs. Yes, they did us wrong. Yes, things should have been changed. You’re allowed to protest. However, they are people, and deserve to be treated as such.

Voltron is so much more than the show. It’s this (sometimes) beautiful community where so many have formed friendships and created content they’re passionate about. Voltron has been an escape from my own reality for he past 2 years, so instead on dwelling on how the show ended, I’ll be remembering it for the good times it brought. It’ll remain dear to my heart for a long time.

VLD discourse is really repetitive at this point so I feel like making one last long rant and then I’ll shut up about it forever: I did not understand the creator’s intentions with Shiro and Keith’s relationship to each other at all. The first few seasons we get soft lighting and longing looks between the two while Keith calls Shiro “like a brother” which LGBT folks often can tell means “censors won’t let us put them in a relationship.” Keith and Shiro are constantly paired together in the first two seasons, then we’re constantly shown Keith’s undying devotion to Shiro, while their motif includes hugs and sunsets and endless encouragement to each other. Staff were fine talking about the ship and shooting down it’s main rival. Then season six came and it was both so pro-sheith and ???, cuz not only do we get Keith choosing Shiro over the universe and telling him “I love you” and Shiro gay-panicking over older/hotter Keith, we get Krolia thanking Shiro for raising Keith. Which is some really damn weird wording when the staff had actively encouraged the ship. That “you’re my brother” line can still be considered censorship. And then we get season 7 episode 1 and we’re given flashbacks to Shiro and Keith’s first meeting and Keith looks too young tbh so it gives the impression that their initial age difference was larger than we were actually told. Which doesn’t make sense when we later found out these flashbacks were planned in season 2. So honestly what was their relationship supposed to be? I can’t say they were meant to emulate Hiro and Tadashi from Big Hero Six cuz they don’t act anything like those brothers (or any brother pairing in fiction.) Their earlier interactions just felt too romantic for that. But the “thank you for raising him” seriously throws their whole relationship into the ??? pile. And those flashbacks with a very young Keith don’t help, especially when we know the EPs knew since season 2. It’s like, why keep this fact about their relationship a secret until season 6? Its not a grand reveal like Vader and Luke, it just leaves viewers confused about this friendship they’ve been watching for the last 6 seasons. And then season 8 came and just completely buried their relationship as if it never existed. Their sunset theme was given to Keith and Lance and their encouragements and protectiveness of each other had practically entirely evaporated. Keith’s face doesn’t even show in Shiro’s wedding but his stance implies displeasure at the affair. Viewers are left completely baffled at the entire season and question wth went wrong but no one dares to even ask why’d this one plot point, this relationship that formed the backbone of season 6’s epic final was gone. They’d be labeled a rabid shipper by people who were (rightfully so) sick of the ship wars that fucking ruined this fandom. And, even though I have my own personal beef with the Sheith community, them being petty even half a year after the final makes sense to me. All the shitty plot points about the last season got some (disappointing) explanation but the erasure of Shiro and Keith’s relationship still hasn’t. It must fucking suck to get heavily harassed and mocked for three years and defend the story so vehemently, telling people to wait it out and let it finish and trust the staff, just to get this slap in the face that doesn’t make any sense. And no explanation. There’s no closure. And I still can’t honestly figure out how we’re supposed to interpret their earlier interactions. I’m used to not expecting ships becoming canon, so I didn’t expect Victor/Yurri or Hannigram even though the subtext was there. But Sheith? It’s the weirdest fucking ship I’ve ever had cuz there is a shit ton of subtext in the first half and a whole lot of ??? mixed with plain TEXT and then nothing. I’m just confused and feel alittle betrayed you know? But whatever it’s happened and I’ll forever be salty but whatever. Great shows are not immune to disastrous ends (looks at GOT) but that’s just how it is. I’m done with ranting, I won’t care after this long ass cathartic rant (thank you reading 4am ramblings haha.) There’re more stories to grip me and hopefully they won’t all disappoint but I’ve learned my lesson with VLD. I hope the klantis will rmb how they harassed actual gay men over cartoon drawings when they get their klance in voltrons next iteration (and I genuinely hope regular klancers enjoy it cuz it’ll be a move forward for LGBT in cartoons anyway right?)

If I can add something else that was also confusing about season 7 episode 1: they literally compared Keith to Shiro’s ex-boyfriend. Parallel, juxapostion, whatever you want to call it. But they literally compared Adam not supporting Shiro to Keith “never giving up” on Shiro. And when asked in an interview if the parallel between Adam and Keith was intentional, JDS answered “well yeah.” Like is it any wonder why Sheith shippers got their hopes up?

How was Voltron ruined?

This message is kind of spooking me because I was working on a draft that talked about that, but I’ll still answer it here, prescient anon.

Voltron was ruined because it was the birthing grounds of what would be the modern “Anti Community”. The “Anti-Anti Community” had a hand in it as well, but it was primarily the former. And I know that those are stupid names, but when it’s the widely accepted vernacular. Anytime I say “Anti”, substitute it with “Anti-Shipper” and “Anti-Anti” with “Anti-Anti-Shipper” (shoulda been “Pro-Shipper” but once again, nobody on Tumblr can pick smart names).

Also necessary disclaimer, while I ascribe certain attributes to each side of the Shipping Discourse, I’m not trying to paint with a broad brush. While I had one friend that liked Sheith and another that liked Klance and neither turned out to be terrible, so now I’m speaking in broad terms.

Basically when Voltron was happening, there were two massively popular ships going at it. “Sheith” was Shiro and Keith, “Klance” was Keith and Lance. I don’t know why or when, but they started duking it out, and became the proto-movements I listed above. Keith signaled the Anti Community, and they opposed the Sheith ship. Pro-Klance attempted to denounce the Sheith ship by spinning a narrative that it was like, pedophilia or something because Shiro was older than the other paladins (they only said he was the oldest of the main cast, please note this trend for later). Erstwhile, Pro-Sheith shippers just wanted to watch their cute guys in peace, and opposed the stark buttmad ravers. In essence, Pro-Klance set the grounds for the Anti Movement, and Pro-Sheith set the grounds for the Anti-Anti Movement.

While this may seem like a case of “good but misguided” versus “good”, it was anything but. The Keith side, as I said before, had an agenda and it wasn’t actually protecting kids from pedophilic ships. Anyone with eyes could see that it was primarily “I want my yaoi guys to kiss and not yours” with a coat of lead paint on it. The rest is history and frantic tumblr posts. The infamous FICTION IS REALITY ask where some anti-Sheith dude tried to say that pedophilia in fiction promotes actual real-life pedophilia (and some other stuff but that photo is blurry and I can’t read it), nevermind the fact that Sheith being pedophilia is a completely fabricated statement because all they had to go on was “Sheith’s the oldest” (and implying that Lance was older than Keith which had never been said). The mass waves of Sheith shippers being harassed, sent gore, and in some cases SENT CP which is fucking abhorrent (and hypocritical since their opposers claimed to hate pedophilia, really causes 🤔). The one Klancer who somehow got leaks of the show and threatened to release them if Klance wasn’t made canon (an incident wherein nobody put on airs of fighting justice anymore). And the supplementary book came out, confirming Shiro at 25, Keith at 18, Lance at 17, meaning Klance was the underage ship all along, cue everyone screaming NOT CANON and looking for contradictions, even though Klancers would not have listened to any proof had Keith and Lance’s ages been swapped. I also heard something about Klance SS Uniform fanart on twitter but I blacked out when someone told me that because I can only handle so much.

Keep in mind that Sheith wasn’t just squeaky ducks either. I remember that one posts where a Sheith shipper made a Down With Cis Bus-tier story about some kid yelling at them in a Wal-Mart for shipping Sheith. And while I can’t recall any specific examples, I know there must have been some examples of the “ship and let live” side actively trying to oppose Keith (thus the serpent bites its tail and Anti-Anti becomes Anti). But this was a minourity of the Sheith side, Klance was definitely pulling its weight when it came to being horrible.

And this was the VOCAL MINOURITY, but it was vocal enough to be the only thing I ever heard about Voltron. Between the vitriolic shipping wars and the actual show having its own issues (it took way too long for them to actually form Voltron), the show’s reputation was ruined and all anybody will remember is the protoplasmical shipping wars and how they grew into the modern Anti and Anti-Communities.

And now the people who rode the Klance bus and hated the Voltron writers are both following and working on She-Ra. It’s going to crash and burn like Voltron did, and while I don’t want to watch it because it looks like shit, I’m going to learn about it against my will.

AND TO THINK, all of this could have been avoided if everyone had Sheith as a Matespritship and Klance as a Kismesissitude. But they didn’t because ultimately this was a coward’s game. Also sorry to drag on, but I wanted to fully illustrate what TF happened outside of just saying “shipping wars” because that wouldn’t be satisfying enough and also I Want People To Learn.

klancers who are hellbent on canon endgame terrify me. it’s been pretty clear for a while now that they won’t be canon and that’s??? fine??? the show isn’t about romance. that was never part of the grand vision. and since when has the lack of a canon relationship ever sank a ship?? shipping has never been about that. few ships in the great wide world of canon across all of fandom are canon so like?? can we just. enjoy the show as it is. enjoy our characters. and then explore their dynamic in fandom? I slurp up their canon interactions like a dehydrated sponge, but if/when they’re not endgame like?? it’s not gonna effect my love of their dynamic. that’s never been a question. i don’t understand people who drop a ship or a fandom bc said ship isn’t canon. i don’t. get it. it would be great, yeah, but it’s not the end of the world. the only thing that sinks a ship is when people abandon it. fandom content is often better than canon anyway so. why abandon the content creators or abandon it as a content creator just bc the show didn’t give you exactly all of your fantasies. fandom is about taking what you’re given and running with it. you don’t see rarepair shippers giving up hope. so why should we. i don’t get it. and that mentality terrifies me and gives me the Big Anxiety.

i guess what i’m saying is that i don’t expect klance to be canon. i never really have. but that’s never stopped by love or enjoyment of the show, and it’s never hampered my love of the ship. fandom is for exploring what you don’t get in canon. voltron’s vision was never about romance or all of that, its in the background while giant space war is in the forefront and that’s fine. i can get my fix in fandom. 

i’ll still be here after s8, and ill still be the same klance shipper i always was. and no matter how you feel about the show, i hope you’ll still be here as well. i hope you’ll enjoy the show as it was without expecting it to be perfect. and i hope you can separate your desires from the creators’ vision. and most of all, i hope you can still appreciate everything this show has given us, how it brought us together. klance probably wont be canon king, but they’re king of my heart and that’s what matters in the end.
