quotes from a fan's recap of the young veins' show in atlanta, georgia on 24 march 2010
we had a lot of trouble focusing on the other bands playing because Ryan and Jon decided to watch part of the other bands’ sets sidestageish, which resulted in a bunch of rabid fangirls giving us the play by play of everything that they were doing. “Omg, he touched his hair, OH MY GOD, HE TUCKED IT BEHIND HIS EAR.”
Jon caught me taking a creeper picture of him while he was leaned down setting up his stuff. I was only mildly appalled at the fact that I got caught, but he just smiled and held it for my camera:
Tumblr media
they had a really great set. The banter between the guys was really funny and entertaining, even though both Nicks and Andy didn’t really say much during the set.
I can’t remember which song they did this before, it may have been Capetown, but I could be wrong: Ryan: We have a new album coming out called Take a Vacation. You can tell them more about it, Jon, while I fix my guitar. Jon: We have a new album coming out called Take a Vacation. It’s coming out June 8th; there are eleven songs on it. We made it awhile ago. Ryan: Well, that's really boring, not exciting at all. Jon: I'm just reading it off the Wikipedia page, we have it pulled up back there.
Jon sang lead on two songs, before he sang lead on the second Ryan intro’d him as singing lead vocals. It went something like this: Ryan: Jon’s going to sing lead on this next one. Crowd: -semi silent- Jon: WHOOOOOOO GO JON!
I am now prepared to eat my words about Ryan Ross’ voice. His live vocals are really good. I actually prefer him live to any of the recorded songs that I’ve heard so far. I was pleasantly surprised that my ears did in fact NOT bleed at any point during their set. I found myself really enjoying his voice. I also loved the harmonies that they had going during Defiance.
We ran into Jon at the merch table and got to talk to him for a bit about Panic, the new album, and a bunch of other shit that I can’t remember. It was all a fucking blur, honestly. I actually feel a bit sad that I told him that I wasn’t expecting much out of them when I first got to the venue. His face looked a bit like this :( after I said that, but I followed up by telling him how completely blown away I was by their set and the new music, his face proceeded to change into this :D
We also talked about the split with Panic. Me: Panic was really my favorite band, I was really upset after you guys split, but I think that after hearing you guys play live, I’m glad the band split because now we’re going to have two incredible bands instead of just one. Jon: Yeah, I’m sad that it happened. I really loved playing with those guys and we made some really great music together. But you know, it just had to happen. Me: I actually think I may like Take a Vacation more than what you guys did while you were in Panic. Jon: -high five- That’s so great! I’m glad that you like the new stuff that we’re doing.
We talked for a few more minutes about random shit then we decided to go ahead and head out. My friend asked for a hug which he was totally into, he was a hugging machine that night. I’m not really into the whole, hugging band members thing, so I was ready to leave then Jon was like \o/ (that’s suppose to be open arms) at me, so who am I to refuse a hug from Jon Walker? No one that’s who!
After seeing the live show, I’m actually really glad that the band split. Ryan and Jon both seemed extremely happy. I wish that those of you who are still bitter about the split could have been at the show and had the chance to see the sheer joy they had on their faces while they played. All the guys are extremely humble and grateful. Jon was incredibly easy to talk to and he seemed a lot more at ease in that setting than at both of the Panic meet and greets I’ve had. Nick Murray and Jon actually thanked us 94582085 times for coming to show.

Reading Satie’s Wikipedia page is so entertaining.
I’ve listened to the rest of the Gymnopédies and the Gnossiennes as you suggested, as well as “je te veux” and “trois morceaux en forme de poire”. I know French, how dare you not mention that he made something called “three pieces in the form of a pear”. It was so funny.
I think my favourite is still Gymnopédie No. 1, but I might just be stuck on it since it was the first I listened to. Je te veux was also really beautiful. I love waltzes <33
I also read that he wrote music for a ballet! So I’m definitely gonna listen to that too <3
OH my goodness i’m so glad you’ve been listening this is so cool!!! im going to keep it real with you ive never heard of the pear one you must have really done a deep dive!! and YES ballet time

GC: My English Professor (Pt.3)
“wow, the music is bumping out there - usually I’m the perpetrator”
started the class by showing us a cartoon picture of his girls and said “my youngest wasn’t captured well, her hair never looks that good. Lily’s always got bedhead”
“it's probably obvious that I’m teaching the class via the way I’ve been taught, but I’ve also thought, like, ‘Why did John die? No-why did he teach?’ and then I teach like that, and there’s this book ‘Tough, Sweet and Stuffy’ and I want to teach like John, but like, slightly different than that. It’s coming out as a Walker Gibson kind of thing.”
paced forward and back with his eyes directly in the white light casted by the projector
talked about Robert Frost and said he wants to hang out with him
“you can write about whatever you want but not about being a sniper on campus. a student did that once, said he was joking around, hmm, not funny. That's like, so outrageous, it draws a red flag. You can have your topic, just as decorum”
tells us not to be intimidated by any assignment because students are ‘generally successful, I’m assuming’ and the ‘stakes are only a little bit higher’
someone on the other side of the classroom wall banged like, really loud, he just paused and blinked before turning to a guy in the corner of the room and pointed and made him answer the question
when he reads a book, he begins with the bibliography in the back a lot of books have as a citation (he’s not big on fantasy) instead of the front page
“y’all are a tough crowd”
says to act like there’s a person on the other side of the wall every time we come to class shouting “what is this about” and he wants us to be able to shout back “well, give me a minute!” and then answer
he wrote a Wikipedia article about his friend and his friend corrected it so he showed us

[ad_1] Midway through Steven Sondheim's classic musical Company comes “Getting Married Today," a mental breakdown in song form, in which a nervous bride attempts to flake on her wedding. It's considered one of the most difficult numbers in the musical theater canon, “the greatest show-tune tongue-twister of all time,” the kind of song that has its own Wikipedia page. In the gender swapped revival now playing on Broadway, the song is performed each night by Matt Doyle, a performance that's winning raves. The California native has played a steady string of demanding roles in shows like The Book of Mormon, War Horse, Bye Bye Birdie, and Spring Awakening. But his turn in Company is a breakout, and this week he received his first-ever Tony nomination. “It’s my favorite show I’ve ever been in, without question,” Doyle told GQ. “Every bit about this production is magnificent and smart, and it means even more at this point, being a part of this journey through the pandemic. Together, we’ve experienced a crazy amount of collective trauma that I’ll look back on one day and think ‘I can’t believe we survived.’”GQ recently caught up with Doyle to ask him about how he eats and trains to make sure he has stamina for eight shows a week. He says it took him years of honing both his craft and his body to acclimate to the grind of daily performances and late nights: “Most people don’t realize how taxing this all can be,” he said.GQ: I’m assuming your days don’t start at 6 a.m. if you’re up late performing. Matt Doyle: Right. I get back from my show around midnight every night and fall asleep by 3 a.m. So, that means I’m sleeping until 10 or 11 a.m. every day. Once I’m up, I’ll make coffee and cook up some scrambled eggs with spinach and parmesan, and eat that with rye toast. If it’s a crazy day, I’ll go to Starbucks and get a venti iced coffee, black unsweetened, and eat those kale mushroom egg bits they have. I lie and tell myself they’re good for me, but who knows. I also hard boil a lot of eggs for the week in case I am on the move and can’t stop anywhere. What happens after breakfast? It’s funny, because my work day doesn’t really start until 4 or 5. So, after breakfast, I’ll get our dog off to doggy daycare and then I get to the gym. My workout changes based on the day, just if I’m focusing on lower or upper-body lifting. What’s for lunch? If I'm home, I eat a lot of lean proteins. I really do focus on being as healthy as possible, I’ll have ground turkey pretty often. Or, maybe I cook up some chicken breast and some sweet potatoes. If I’m out, it’s always Sweetgreen or Dig.Have you always eaten this clean? Not at all. I’m a naturally very small guy, and when I first moved here, at 19, I weighed something like 120 pounds and didn’t think much about my diet. But when I first came into the theater, I had a director look at me and tell me that if I wanted to play certain roles, I’d have to take care of myself and bulk up a bit—especially if I wanted to have the stamina of doing eight shows per week. Today, I’m closer to 150 pounds. [ad_2] Source link

House of Cards by sugamins is a multi-chapter Archive of Our Own fanfiction that follows police officer Kim Taehyung’s undercover operation into the gangster world of Haedogje Pa. Jeon Jungkook, shrouded in an air of mystery and dubbed “The Boy,” is the heir to this crime empire. Park Jimin lives with him, acting as a lover of sorts in a high, pristine penthouse apartment. The story follows the three and their complicated relationship where sex, violence, and drugs surround them. Kim Taehyung tries to take down the empire as his moral lines of black and white begin blurring into gray. In this crime-ridden alternate reality to Seoul, everything from the structure of the gangster world to the trust between three lovers is as fragile as a house of cards.
Now presenting the interview with sugamins, author of Archive of Our Own’s second most hit English work and most hit BTS work, House of Cards:
How did you start writing?
How did you get into fanfiction?
How much writing experience did you have prior to House of Cards?
Do you have any literary or artistic inspirations? Any other authors or works that have inspired you to create anytime before or after House of Cards?
How did you become an ARMY [ARMY stands for Adorable Representative MC for the Youth. It is the fandom name for fans of BTS, otherwise known as Bangtan Sonyeondan]?
I started writing fanfiction in 2012. But before then, I used to enjoy writing stories as a child and young teenager. I used to write and illustrate my own stories. I even had a sketchbook filled with my own comic book, which was terrible! But I've always been creative. It started with art and then I moved onto writing when I discovered I was able to be much more creative with my words rather than my pencil.
I first got into fanfiction through my years spent on Tumblr. I had always known that it had existed, but I had never really gone looking for it because I hadn't belonged to a fandom at that point in my life. It was back in 2012 when I stumbled upon an EXO fanfic that a lot of people were talking about (Arbitrage, you can find it on Livejournal.) I read it and then thought...wow, so this is fanfiction! From that point, I started reading more and more, mostly Infinite fanfiction. And then I decided to start writing with the encouragement of an old online friend, and here I am!
In terms of writing experience, I have never formally received education. I stopped studying English Language and Literature when I was 16, instead focusing on Art, History, and Religious Education (purely because I wanted to learn about philosophy and quantum mechanics) for my final two years at high-school. The only experience I have is through writing fanfiction. I started back in 2012, and I've developed a lot since then. I started off small, writing horror short stories and little collections. Brotherhood was the first 'long fic' I created. I was shocked that it managed to get so big because I had never created a story of that size before. Writing helped me gain experience and figure out what worked and what didn't work, what I was good at writing, and where I was lacking and needed to learn. I don't think you can really experience an art form until you start doing it. You can learn all about the techniques and the conventions, but until you pick up a pen and start writing or drawing, you won't ever know what it means to create.
My literary inspiration has always been Stephen King. Which is funny, as he has described himself as 'having diarrhea of the typewriter.' I think that applies to me sometimes. I am a bit of a wordy writer, though I've started honing it down for certain stories. Sometimes, a story needs to be floral and descriptive, sometimes, it needs to be punchy and direct. So, King was my major inspiration, especially with horror. I also enjoy the works of Poe and Lovecraft (I acknowledge the problematic themes in the work of Lovercraft and seek not to praise him as a person. He was a terrible person for sure, but sadly, he had a way with cosmic horror that is hard to find.) I also enjoy Chuck Palahniuk and the dark, seedy and overall zany stories that he has created. I like his style a lot!
In terms of inspirations for House of Cards, I was obviously inspired by the films Infernal Affairs/The Departed. American Gangster and Training Day were also major inspirations (and also because I love Denzel Washington's performances in both films. I mean, who doesn't love him?) But I also drew inspiration from other sources that were less focused on gangs, more focused on the dark, nihilistic state of the world around us. I couldn't recommend the TV series True Detective hard enough. It is one of the best series I have ever watched. It handles dark and disturbing content so well, and its fractured, unreliable story-telling and philosophical musing is some of the best I've ever seen on screen. I highly recommend checking it out, but be sure to check the content warning and triggers because it certainly isn't suitable for younger audiences and those with triggers. In terms of real-life content, I think Ross Kemps' docu-series are very good. Particularly Extreme World and On Gangs. His docu-series show the dark and disturbing side of criminal activity, the drug trade and more.
I became a fan of BTS [Bangtan Sonyeondan] back in 2013. I had already been a fan of K-Pop for some time by then, as I had started listening to various K-Pop and K-Rock artists back in 2009. I knew of their debut, but I had seen hundreds of new acts debut by the time that they broke into the scene, and so I didn't pay much heed. Someone I followed on Tumblr at the time kept posting about how much she loved them, especially Taehyung [BTS V/Kim Taehyung]. One day, I stumbled upon a gifset of Yoongi [BTS Suga/Min Yoongi] being sarcastic in one of their first interviews. I thought he was funny, so I decided to check them out. At the time, they had recently released We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2 [BTS’s second music video release with their debut album 2 Kool 4 Skool]. I followed them from that point, and their first comeback [A “comeback” refers to when a K-Pop idol group releases new music, usually done twice a year.] was also my first comeback. I liked their music [BTS released Boy In Luv and Just One Day in 2014, both music videos of songs from their Skool Luv Affair EP.], but I liked them even more as individuals. I loved watching their shows [Here is a link to BTS’s schedule during 2014 when they had their first comeback. You can find the shows and interviews they were on there.], even though they are incredibly embarrassing to look back on now. They just had so much energy and looked to be having so much fun that I was having fun just watching them. I was a fan, I liked a lot of their songs and followed their activities. But it wasn't until they released HYYH Part One [Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa Part 1 (Korean) = The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt. 1 (This is the title in English), released with the I Need U and Dope music videos.] that I really became a fan of their music. I had already created a couple of small horror stories for the fandom at that point. HYYH Part One [The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Pt. 1] inspired me so much that I created Brotherhood, my first 'long fic.' I joined AO3 [Archive of Our Own] and started posting there. I received so much support from fellow fans that I carried on writing, and the rest is history!
How has your experience being an ARMY [Adorable Representative MCs of the Youth, BTS’s global fan base name.] been? Did you ever leave the fandom then come back? How did you interact with others when you first got into the fandom and as you grew up?
How have you been since you wrote House of Cards? What have you been working on?
Are you okay with talking about how old you are now and how old you were when you wrote House of Cards?
Before you even wrote House of Cards, what inspired it? Any TV shows? Music? Movies? Books? Ideas? It could be anything.
How did you start writing House of Cards? Did you finish the entire story then publish it or did you write it as you went? What was the writing process like?
Did you have any beta readers or editors? If you did, are you still in contact with them now? How did they feel about your work?
My experience being a fan has mostly been positive over the years. In the earlier days, back around when I first started writing for the fandom, it was certainly much more positive. I've received so much support over the years, not only in my writing but in my personal life from readers and fellow fans that being a fan of the boys [The members of BTS] really has changed my life. That's not an exaggeration. I doubt I would even be here now without those years having such a positive effect on my mental health. I've never really been the kind to interact with others and form cliques within the fandom, I just like being in my own space and interacting with everyone that comes my way, I guess?
These days, I'm not as active as a writer or in fandom spaces however. I feel like my time in the fandom has started to come up and I don't know how I feel about it just yet. I feel nostalgic for the time when I was first starting out in the fandom and I didn't really know much, but everything was fun. It doesn't feel so fun now, but I mostly contribute that to the effect that Twitter has had on shaping the fandom's growth. Twitter has never been a good place for creatives within fandoms because of issues with algorithms and such. Tumblr was always the better website for hosting artistic content for a variety of reasons. So, I think the fact that everything is on Twitter now has been partly responsible for my decline in engagement and overall enjoyment. I'm currently taking a break from Twitter. The next couple of months will be what makes me either stay or leave the fandom.
Since writing House of Cards, I've been an active writer in the fandom. Over the years, I've added quite a lot of stories to my AO3 accounts and various pseuds. My largest ongoing story is another gang story, set in the 1980s, called Valentino Summers. I actually started writing and publishing it on Ao3 just four or so months after I finished House of Cards—which is wild to think about. Finally finishing House of Cards seems like such a long time ago in my mind, and yet I'm still working on a story I created that same year! I like contributing horror stories to the fandom, especially in the Halloween period. I like publishing series in the month/upcoming weeks before Halloween—though I won't be doing so this year [2020].
When I started writing House of Cards, I would have just turned 22. It was inspired by the song 'Wires' by The Neighbourhood. I might be mistaken, but I believe that Jungkook [BTS Jungkook/Jeon Jungkook] posted a tweet with the song in it. [Jungkook did tweet about this song. Here is the English translation.] I had never heard of the band before, but my partner was a fan of their music. She sent the song to me and I was very interested in the lyrics, so I started discussing them with her. One thing led to the next, and then we had basically come up with the entire plot of the story. We just needed to create the characters. We spent a little while doing so, and then I started doing some research and started writing the story. There really isn't a grand backstory to House of Cards, it just happened so fast. We often come up with story ideas like that, and my partner is responsible for a huge amount of my stories. She has the creative visions, which I then turn into words. We make quite the team, haha~ The inspirations, I mentioned those in my previous answer regarding films and TV shows.
I published the story as I went, though I staggered the updates because I didn't want to post too frequently. I had the entire story planned out from the start——I didn't change a single aspect of the story no matter what I received in terms of feedback. I think a lot of readers assume that writers might tweak things if they sense the audience wants something to happen in terms of plot or relationships. Personally, I don't like doing that. I like sticking to my plans even if I know my vision might not be what the readers want. I think it's important for the story to be created the way I see it because my vision is what made me create it, if that makes sense.
The writing process was surprisingly smooth! You might not think it because the story is big and there are a lot of characters and plot threads to keep on top of, but it went smoothly for me. It flowed just as smoothly from start to finish as Brotherhood did. I never struggled once with writing the chapters, nor did I ever get stuck and wonder if I should change the content in order to make it easier to write. I'm surprised that I managed to complete it so easily because that's not the case with writing now! I tend to be a lot slower now, more deliberate and more open to changes in order to ease the process and the overall flow of the story. In a way, this change has been for the best. I do wonder what House of Cards would be like if I were to write it now, with my different approach to planning and writing. It would probably have a quicker flow, and the word count would either go down as a result of cuts, or go up because of additional scenes I would have likely included.
I didn't have any betas, which you can probably tell from the work. My stories are so big that I never wanted to put the burden of fixing them onto someone else. I know they are imperfect, oftentimes bloated things, but that's just what they are. I did try creating a story with another writer in the past, but it didn't go very well. She would often have conflicting opinions on things and would not have any leeway for anything I suggested, whereas I always had leeway to allow her to change things. Even to the point of completely changing the plot of the story that I had already started writing, and then allowing her to add graphic sexual content she didn't even want to be in the story. She actually stopped writing fanfiction randomly in the middle of us creating the story! She made a post about it being disgusting and nasty and then bowed out. I have no clue if she ever came back! So, my negative experience with attempting to work with someone else when creating a story kind of made me not want to have a beta. It's a wild story, I know!
House of Cards is praised for its realism and accuracy with weaponry, torture, sex, and violence. How did you research these things?
How did you come up with the gangster universe in House of Cards? How did you develop Haedogje Pa?
How did you name the original characters in House of Cards? Did any characters in particular take inspiration from existing characters in TV shows, anime, books, any type of media?
How did you decide on Vminkook as your main characters for the story? What do you see in their dynamic and them as characters?
Jimin is claimed to be one of the best written characters in the entire story. What was your thought process when characterizing him and developing him?
Taehyung is an especially dynamic character whose morals get tested time and time again in House of Cards. What was your thought process when characterizing him and developing him?
Jungkook is one of the characters that the readers spend the least amount of time getting a perspective from, but is incredibly well written in his character progression. What was your thought process when characterizing him and developing him?
When it came to various aspects in the story, I did do research. Most of it never really had an impact on the story itself. For example, I would be looking up gun models that are used by law enforcement agencies around the world and trying to find specs of them so I could learn how many bullets each gun held, or how much a magazine could hold. In action scenes, I didn't want my characters firing off 20+ bullets for a gun that—in reality—holds far less. That's a fact that doesn't really mean much to the average reader, but it meant something to me! I've always hated how many bullets fly through the air in action scenes in films and TV shows because I'm always wondering if it's possible with the firearms featured in the scene haha~ In terms of torture, I've come across the subject through various documentaries and TV shows about gangs, crime and serial killers. I didn't really do much additional research into the topic, beyond reading up on what I had come across to make sure it wasn't fictionalised for drama purposes. Obviously, there will be some lack of realism in my story because I couldn't possibly write a realistic portrayal of gang violence and torture when I have zero personal experience with it. My aim wasn't to give the story 'full' realism (I'll explain more about that in the next question) but to simply create a world that felt real, even if there were little aspects that had to be exaggerated for the sake of the story. Taehyung's behaviour when undercover certainly broke many procedures. The only thing working in his favour that allowed him to get away with it is that the crimes he committed couldn't be directly traced to him. But a real undercover agent would never do the things that he did on behalf of the gang. Basically, this means that the entire story is unrealistic! But of course, it wouldn't be very entertaining if Taehyung simply observed from the background and didn't dirty his hands. So, I had to bend and break the rules a little!
For the universe, I knew that I couldn't base it too much in reality. Because of basic Korean law, it would have been impossible for me to write the gang operating in the way they did in the story—especially with guns. Most Korean gangs tend to use other forms of violence and weapons in order to control their respective areas, rather than guns. My other story, Taste of Ink, has what I would consider a more realistic approach to gang activity—with the main weapons being knives, baseball bats, etc. and the main forms of violence being assault instead of flat-out murder. So, for the sake of allowing guns to appear in the story, I had to create a Neo-Seoul, so to speak. I took inspiration from Korean gangs, and mixed it with influences from other gang cultures in order to create 'Haedogje Pa.'
When it comes to naming original characters, I honestly don't put much thought into it. I like to use real names for inspiration. I often Google various Korean films I've watched and read the cast list in order to find interesting character and actor names. This is because I have a habit of reusing names sometimes. For example, readers of my stories might have come across a couple of Daesu and Goohee characters. Do you know where I got these names from? I picked Daesu from Oh Daesu - Choi Minsik's character in Oldboy. Goohee comes from the manhwa 'Let Dai' - he is the stubborn gang leader that actually has a good heart beneath his rough exterior. I ended up liking him the most by the end of the story, so his name is one that often comes to mind when I need to pick an original character name.
I never really consider real life dynamics when I'm writing because my stories are so detached from reality that it seems pointless including any inspiration from reality. I chose the three main characters simply because, at the time, they seemed to fit the character moulds the best. The other characters fit their respective characters so well (especially Namjoon [BTS RM/Kim Namjoon] and Yoongi) that I simply thought it was best to have Taehyung, Jimin [BTS Jimin/Park Jimin] and Jungkook as the three lead roles. I chose them more based on how I thought they could personally fit the characters, rather than focus on the dynamic. To use Taehyung as an example, I thought that he would fit the character of the informant in my story because in reality, he is intelligent and seemed like he would suit the role. For Jimin, I thought he would be a good choice for a character that some might think is vulnerable or even weak. He is actually very strong and the most important character for the plot progression. For Jungkook, I liked the thought of someone with such an innocent outer appearance hiding a dark secret.
I'm so glad that readers took to Jimin so positively on a whole. I know there are some that hated him, or that hated the fact I chose him for such a role (a 'negative' sex worker role). But Jimin is the most important character for the plot progression. It is through him that the entire plan finally culminates in the explosive finish. I wanted to treat him with care because I understood that his character could go very wrong if not handled correctly. It would have been easy for him to simply become nothing more than a sexual prop, should the story have focused too much on Taehyung and Jungkook as the key players. So, I decided to subvert it by giving Jimin the ultimate hand in the story and allowing him to have more control than Jungkook in the end. If Jimin had not decided to follow through with the plan, if he had decided to snitch or had simply refused to do his part in exposing the gang, the story would've ended drastically differently. But I also didn't want to write Jimin taking control of the entire situation at the end because it would've felt ingenuine. He is a character that has been deeply affected by a lifetime of trauma. I was worried that some might take my portrayal of his trauma the wrong way, and see him not as a character that has suffered immense mental damage but rather as an annoying, weak character that gets in the way of more 'interesting' dynamics. I'm sure there will be readers that think that. Mentally traumatized individuals are often seen in such negative light, be they fictional characters or real people. When writing his character, especially in the later scenes, I wanted to make sure the trauma he experienced would shape his behaviour. Writing the scene of him getting ready to leave, when he is taking his pills and he doesn't think he can do it, it was hard. It was hard getting into that headspace of feeling so powerless in the moment and knowing that freedom is in reach, but not knowing how to achieve it. He was a difficult character to write, but I think he turned out just right in the end.
Taehyung was probably the best character to write. I love characters that start off so morally upright and pristine, and by the end of the story, their backs are bending and close to breaking from the weight of their conscience and misdeeds. His character has many facets to him that made his perspectives so interesting to tackle. From his green days in the gang, where he is horrified by the violence he sees, to the changes in his psyche as he starts to become desensitized to it all. Fundamentally, Taehyung begins the story as a good man, a hero, but by the end, there is no black and white thinking. He has become grey, muddied from his time spent in the gang. Is he a hero for bringing them down? Would a hero do the things that he did in order to bring down the gang? He killed people. He tortured people. He threatened a man with a gun, a man he knew had a deepset fear of guns that would severely trigger him. I think it all depends on how the reader sees it. The hardest thing to write for his character was his troubled descent into the relationship between him, Jungkook and Jimin, and how it affects his thought processes and emotions. I didn't want House of Cards to be seen as a romantic story when I created it. If readers see it that way, they are more than entitled to their own interpretations. I cannot tell them how they can interpret my art, that is not my role as the creator. I don't know if I effectively portrayed the co-dependency between the three main characters as well as I would've liked. But I had never tackled such a story and themes before, and so it was all new to me.
I didn't know that Jungkook had the least perspective from the three main characters. Similarly, I never really put that much effort into creating and developing his character! Jungkook simply 'happened' in the moment. He would appear in the chapter, and then his character would basically take control of the scene. I never really knew what he was going to say or do beyond my rough plans for each scene. I just waited until he appeared and let the creative spirit flow through me. That's how he came to be! I've had that happen many times in the past with characters—they have a life of their own and I've no control over them. In my story, Brotherhood, Taehyung happened the same way. It was impossible to write his character in that story because he was so wild and free-spirited that it didn't feel right unless his behaviour was a total spur-of-the-moment reaction to the other characters and new plot points. But with Jungkook in House of Cards, I don't know why I didn't have him planned out like the others. It's interesting to think that he might've had a good progression when I never planned any of it in detail!
Were there any original characters you particularly liked writing or enjoyed?
When you wrote for the BTS hyung line, how did you determine their roles in the story and characterize each of them?
Is there a reason behind Namjoon saying “brother” or was it a consciously written character quirk?
When you handled more serious subject matter in House of Cards, how did you feel when writing it? Were you ever startled by your own work?
Was there any type of purposeful titling for the fanfiction chapters?
What was your reason for House of Cards’ open ending?
I liked writing Lim, the original informant that helped Taehyung join the gang. I like writing characters that come across as sleazy. In his case, the sleaze was all an act and wasn't true to his character; he was affecting it for the sake of creating a persona. But I enjoy writing absolute sleaze balls too—the kind of guys that have chest hair and wear gold chains and thick watches, who practically ooze oil. I just find them fun! Lim was a good teacher, even when he was rough around the edges. It was sad doing what I had to do to him for the sake of the plot. But I feel like Lim understood the game as well as everyone else, and so he knew he was running on borrowed time.
Of course, I loved writing Bae Goohee too! He was an absolute bastard! I loved writing this figure that is spoken about throughout the story as a frightening man, one so brutal that the readers are already wary of him before he even appears in the story. I believe that Taehyung refers to him as a 'guard dog' at some point. I think Bae is the scariest character in the story for me because he is so ruthless and willing to do any order that the Jeon clan give to him. That kind of blind and unwavering devotion is frightening!
I also enjoyed writing Sungah and Jangmi. I think they're the only female characters in the story that have dialogue? Sungah has a great backstory that I unfortunately couldn't go into too much in the story, but it shaped her character a lot. I like how frank and intelligent she is—she holds her own even in a department filled with men that receive far more praise than she does simply because she is a woman. She also allowed me to add an angle about the unfair treatment of women in jobs that have power, drawing parallels with how Taehyung faces discrimination from his fellow officers when his sexuality is abruptly revealed during the investigation. As for Jangmi, I just liked writing about the wife of a mob boss! And not one that is simply a trophy wife, but actually has a lot of power and influence across the city. I wish I had been able to feature her more, alongside her husband, Jeon himself. But I like the scenes they appear in and I enjoyed writing them.
For the rest of the members, I had Namjoon and Hoseok [BTS J-Hope/Jung Hoseok]'s characters planned right from the start. I had also created plans for Yoongi and Seokjin [BTS Jin/Kim Seokjin], but I wasn't sure how much of a role they would play in the overall story. As I started writing them, I realised that Yoongi would play an important role in both Taehyung and Jimin's character development, and so he ended up featuring a lot more than I had expected. I planned their jobs and then let them influence how I would write them. Namjoon and Hoseok's characters came naturally. Yoongi's character completely took over his job role and basic description and became a really strong character that I'm proud of. Seokjin was a little trickier because he doesn't appear in too many scenes—but the scenes he does are integral to the plot. I needed to make sure that his character said everything he needed to in his limited scenes. He has quite the bombshell to drop after all! Seokjin was also tricky because I wanted him to have an air of mystery around him. I wanted him to be the kind of guy that not even Taehyung and his police connections would be able to unearth much about; a ghost in the system. I would've also liked for him to feature more in the story, but I feel like his character appeared in the essential scenes that the story needed. He was going to feature more in the planned sequel, being one of the first characters to appear alongside Yoongi. He was going to serve an important role, so I'm disappointed that I didn't get to show those scenes to readers.
With Namjoon, I wanted to portray him as a mature character, but not one that was conservative and stiff. I thought about having him say things like 'man' but that seemed too casual and didn't suit his character. 'Man' made him seem more like a surfer than a police officer. But when he said 'brother' in one of the scenes, I realised the word suited him better. It was fraternal, and it allowed him to show some affection towards the other characters without having to have physical contact with them. It's not the only Namjoon I've written that says 'brother' a lot. In Valentino Summers, Namjoon has experience with hippies in the neighbourhood that he lives in, so he also refers to other characters like Jimin as 'brother.' It just seems to suit him! I guess it's because I like creating Namjoon characters that are intelligent and mature, but still have a gentle and warm presence. I could picture him saying it in real life (I'm certain he already has!)
When writing serious subject matter, I'm surprised to admit that I was never shocked by what I was writing! I guess it's because I already knew that I was going to be handling dark themes. I wouldn't have tackled such subjects had I not felt comfortable doing so. Dark content isn't for everyone, and by that I don't simply mean consuming it. Creating it can be very difficult for some writers, and can even cause distress. It's not easy diving into a world that is filled with crime, pain and fear. It's even harder putting yourself into the shoes of a character that is suffering/has suffered. I was never writing in a desensitised state though. Far from it. I'm actually very sensitive to violence in reality. In fiction, it depends on the violence—but I'm usually not too affected by it. I've been a fan of horror since I was a child, and so I've seen a lot of nasty films filled with gore and 'shocking' deaths that never really had much of an effect on me. Unrealistic violence doesn't scare me. But when it comes to personal violence, that is always frightening to me. It's far scarier writing a scene where a character feels threatened by another character and doesn't know what is going to happen to them then, say, writing a scene of a character dying a bloody, ridiculous death in a horror story. Personal violence is much more realistic, therefore it is more unsettling to write. In House of Cards, the violence is very personal. It's in your face, it's inescapable for the characters that are involved in it. But at no point did I ever feel like I needed to stop writing because I was uncomfortable or scared by the content. If I had been uncomfortable, it would have been very reckless of me to continue writing the story.
My word of advice to fellow dark content writers: it's always important to recognise your own boundaries. There's nothing wrong with removing dark content from a story if you get a bad vibe or feel strange when writing/reviewing it. Always follow your gut instincts and never put out work that you don't like.
When writing stories, I vary between titling the chapters and leaving them blank. For House of Cards, I cannot remember the exact method for naming the chapters. Sometimes, the title comes to me when I am writing the plans and I have an idea that just suits the mood of the chapter. Other times, I have finished the entire chapter and I have to spend some time reviewing the content to decide that the title will be. In some cases, I have finished most of a whole story and I'm still not certain what to title it! I feel like with House of Cards, the titles came after the chapters were finished, or at least when they were works-in-progress.
There are some titles that really stand out to me. 'Nice Teeth' for example, is a really ridiculous title. Going into the chapter, I don't think many readers would've imagined what it could mean. 'Submachine Sodomy' is even funnier. I really can't believe I chose that as a title! I'll bet a lot of readers saw it and thought, "Oh no! Not another gunplay scene!" Luckily for them, it wasn't a reference to Jungkook's predilection for firearms in bed.
In terms of chapter titles that I really like: 'Delusions of Grandeur,' 'I Own This Fucking City,' 'Sleeping Dogs Bite' and 'Carpe-fucking-Diem.' I just feel like these titles are very well suited to the contents of the chapters. They are the kind of titles that have bite to them, that hint at action or an important plot point.
As for the open ending, there are a couple of reasons. First of all, I had planned to continue the story in a sequel that would pick up after the events of House of Cards, roughly a year on after the investigation. However, I did not pursue this sequel. I wanted House of Cards to end on an open note for the sequel to continue the story. When it comes to certain stories, I just feel that closed endings aren't always necessary. I often enjoy stories with open endings. With House of Cards, it didn't seem right just closing the book and saying it was over. There was still so much that needed to be explored. Unfortunately, I decided to not continue it. But I still think that House of Cards' ending fits the story.
Were there any scenes or moments or lines in House of Cards that you were particularly proud of or want to highlight?
If you were to write the Yoomin sequel to House of Cards, how would’ve that looked like?
How were readers’ reactions to your work in the beginning?
Did any reader comments stick with you in particular?
How did you take the criticisms and hatred towards House of Cards for its serious subject matter? When did those types of comments start appearing? Also, where did the hatred come from? Twitter? Tumblr? Ao3 comments? Did people harass you at all or hurt you? How did you heal from that?
House of Cards has a lot of scenes. I'm proud of most of them and I think I did the best I could when writing them. I do not really like the sex scenes, but that is because I wanted to write them in a dirty, sleazy way. If I could, I would change them. I like the action scenes, especially the Gold Monkey Casino and police raid scenes. Action scenes are hard to write! Fight scenes in particular are so tricky. I often sit there, choreographing the fights so I can describe them! I loved writing Yoongi's introduction to the story, when he walks into the scene wearing nothing but his underpants.
One scene that I really liked writing is the scene where Namjoon and Hoseok investigate the USB stick that Taehyung sends to them. I personally love Namjoon and Hoseok's characters. I always enjoyed writing them. In this scene, I liked getting to write them in a setting that was not the police department office. A scene where they got to relax and banter with each other, even though they were still working. They discover a horrifying crime ring in the city, but they are left with no choice but to keep it secret because they do not want to risk blowing Taehyung's cover. I do not know why I really like this scene, I just do.
In the sequel, which focused primarily on Jimin and Yoongi, the plans were to have them reunite through Seokjin—who has avoided jail time through a plea deal with the SMPA. They undergo a healing process together as they try to come to terms with what happened to them. Yoongi has a lot of unhealed trauma from his childhood, much like Jimin, which I only got to briefly touch upon in House of Cards. They grow closer from bonding over their traumatic experiences, and they become happier and healthier as a result. Taehyung and Seokjin were also going to be main characters, with Jungkook, Namjoon and Hoseok making supporting appearances over the duration of the story. It was going to be drastically different from House of Cards because it would be lacking in action and violence. It would have been much more intimate, with much more scenes of characters talking and discovering things about one another.
I cannot remember early reactions to the story, I just know they were positive. There was a lot of positive support from the start. As I updated and started to get more and more into the story, I received a lot of support on tumblr too. I started posting chapter previews there, as I used to get asks [On Tumblr, users are able to ask bloggers questions through an “Ask” function. This can be done anonymously or with their own blog username associated with the question.] requesting them. I got A LOT of asks on my original Tumblr from readers that wanted to discuss the characters and certain scenes. It was really interesting seeing just how much the readers were interested in the story, so much so that they wanted to learn even more about the characters and the universe I had created.
Through House of Cards, I have received comments and messages from readers that had addictions. They told me about how they recognised their own behaviors through Taehyung, and this helped them realise what was happening to them. Those comments stuck with me for obvious reasons. I have family members with addiction issues, and knowing that I could help some stranger I have never met before come to terms with their own addictive behaviours had a massive impact on me. Funnily enough, a negative comment stuck with me. It was not a bad comment, by no means meant to cause offence. It was a comment that was left on the story when I was posting the early chapters. I recall the reader asking when the story was going to pick up the pace because it was too slow. It stuck with me because, at this point in the story, Taehyung had already trained to become an undercover agent, had enrolled in the gang, had met and interacted with Jungkook, and had murdered a man. I was surprised that this amount of development had been seen as 'slow' by a reader, as I had thought the plot had been moving very fast.
I never really had any hate posted on the story when I was updating it. I got angry reactions when I had finished it. Because the story had not ended the way some readers had wanted, I think that was what caused the negative reactions. On my original Tumblr, I even got an ask about how an anon reader was going to write their own ending because my one was bad. I told them that I did not want them to take my story and change it like that. I have no idea if they ever posted the ending anywhere. The angry reactions were mostly from shippers, who were upset with the story not ending the way they had wanted. To them, I ask: what were you expecting from the story? I thought it was always obvious that Taehyung was going to do what he had set out to do from the start, so I do not think I misled readers at all. It was a story about an undercover agent taking down a gang—and that is what I wrote.
I know there was some animosity towards me on Twitter too. Twitter is a whirlpool of negativity, I am not surprised. Writing House of Cards made me appear problematic. My partner used to follow an author a long time back, who tweeted about me being problematic—despite having never interacted with me or admittedly read my stories. It was shocking to me that people were making assumptions of who I was as a person based on a story I created. I have never created stories with the aims of hurting or upsetting others. I am a very quiet and private person, and I hate the idea of hurting others. It was strange to me that people could assume me to be this cruel or even dangerous individual, intent on hurting others, because I created a fictional story. Do they think the same of script writers for television shows? Or film directors, who create films with dark subject matter? Do they think published authors are problematic people for writing dark and disturbing content? Do they think certain genres should not exist because they do not personally like them?
I do think it is strange that fan fiction writers are placed on these ridiculously high pedestals of moral absolutism. Fan fiction was created to be a space for creative outlet for marginalised individuals, particularly queer individuals. The heavy censorship of dark and unusual content is putting this entire ethos at danger. I understand not wanting to have certain topics included in stories because there is a risk that the content can be used for grooming or can be presented in a way that can negatively affect young consumers' perceptions (like pedophilia for example.) I certainly agree that there needs to be boundaries in place to stop the community from being flooded with such illegal content. But I think there is a difference between wanting to remove dangerous content, and wanting to get rid of content you do not like. Content can be problematic to you, but that does not make it dangerous, illegal, or bad. For some readers, the content they create is their way of dealing with trauma. Maybe this is not healthy for them. But that is their decision to make, not yours.
I orphaned the story because I did not want to handle the potential backlash. To put it simply, I do not handle negative criticism well. Not because I am stuck-up and think I am perfect, but because I am a very anxious person. Just reading angry comments makes me feel very uncomfortable, often nauseous. I know that House of Cards has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from readers, and for that I am thankful. But I had to distance myself for the sake of my own mental health. Since orphaning it, it exploded in popularity. I am thankful that I orphaned it because that amount of attention would frighten me a lot, haha~
What was your reaction to the fanfiction trailer by Sappiamur?
How did you come to the decision to reveal your real name in the end note of House of Cards?
How did you feel when you finished House of Cards?
How did you come to the decision to orphan House of Cards?
Did you ever anticipate the overwhelming fan reaction to House of Cards?
How do you feel knowing that House of Cards is one of the most read fanfictions on Ao3?
What do you want House of Cards to be remembered for?
What do you hope people take away from House of Cards?
Why do you think House of Cards became so popular?
I had to go back and watch it. It's been some time since I last have, and I'm still as amazed by it now as I was back then. The trailer is insane. I cannot imagine how much work went into making it. It's so good and it fits the vibes of the story to perfection. I think the first time I watched it, I was in shock. I must have repeated it at least 10 times in a row, just to make sure it was real and I wasn't imagining it. Then I think I screamed about it on my social media accounts, haha~ If you reading this have not watched the trailer, consider doing so. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Back when I first started posting fanfics, I used to get a lot of asks wanting to know my name, my pronouns, stuff like that. I thought by adding my name at the end of the stories, it would help cut down on these requests. But I also did so because I used to get a lot of asks referring to me as 'author-nim' and I didn't like being addressed by this honorific. I'm not Korean so I have no right to receive that honorific. So, I included my real name so readers could address me with it when sending me asks and interacting with me. I don't add my name at the end of my stories now, but my name is in my Twitter bio for those that want to know.
When I finished it, I felt relieved! I was so calm in the moment! Looking back on it, I can't remember much. But I do remember finishing House of Cards without any issues. The final chapters flowed smoothly, it all clicked into place, and I had a great time writing them.
I came to the decision to orphan the story after several nights of contemplation. I was considering deleting the story, along with a few others, but my partner and some friends told me I shouldn't do so. They suggested orphaning it instead. So, I did so. I didn't want to delete it in case readers that had started it had not gotten to finish it yet. I would've felt very mean robbing them of the opportunity to finish the story like that. I don't regret orphaning it instead of deleting it. I didn't want to destroy the story, I just needed some distance between me and the story.
I didn't anticipate it, and I still don't understand it! I'm shocked that House of Cards got the reaction that it received. Do I think it's a good story? Yes, I think that I worked hard to create a story that is enjoyable to read. But did I ever think it would get the reaction it did? Not in a million years! I thought that it would be one of my more popular stories because a) the pairings and b) the content. Gang stories usually tend to get a lot of attention because it's a popular genre in fanfiction. I just didn't expect it to reach such a vast amount of hits, kudos and comments.
I'm in shock that it is one of the most read stories on AO3. I don't think I will ever be able to create another story that will garner that kind of attention and feedback. It's a once in a lifetime thing, so I'm immensely proud of myself for achieving such a feat. But really, it's all because of the readers that it achieved such a goal. I'm so thankful for every single one of them.
I just want it to be remembered for being enjoyable, I think. I don't have any grand and lofty ambitions for the story. I think so long as the readers enjoyed it, that is all that matters.
I'm not sure what I would like readers to take away from House of Cards. I guess I want them to reflect on the idea of morality and that not everything is black-and-white. Good people can do bad things, and bad things can happen to good people. It's hard to answer this question because House of Cards isn't a story that I consider to have deep messages in it? There are no messages about acceptance and love and healthy relationships and such, like some of my other stories.
Honestly? I don't know what made it get so popular. I assume it's because of the pairings or the setting of the story. I know that a lot of readers say they love the story because of how well it's written, but I can't comment on that as the creator, haha~ I can't say my story is well-written as I'm not consuming it from an outside perspective. What I can say is that I do think I created a story that has a lot of twists and turns and betrayals, which I think adds to the enjoyment factor.
How are you now in 2020? Are you writing professionally in real life at all?
How do you feel BTS fanfiction has changed over time? Since you’ve been writing for it for so long.
Do you have any messages for people who may read this interview in the future?
I'm not writing professionally. I have self-published two books via Amazon and Lulu. One was a basic re-branding of my story babes in the woods. The other was a total rewrite of Brotherhood, which I called 'Brothers,' featuring a whole new setting and roster of characters. I published them as readers showed an interest in reading original stories. I have been considering rewriting House of Cards as an original work in the future, but I can't say for certain that I will do so.
Since I started writing, I think there's been a lot of changes in the fandom—not only in fanfiction but in general. There's been popular trends that have come and gone (I was around for the explosion of social media and text-based AUs, which I personally am not a fan of) but there's also been a lot of push for more inclusive content. I'm really happy by the amount of inclusive content that I see these days. Despite some pushback from non-queer fans that sometimes have an issue with queer subject matter (for example, trans characters) I think it's wonderful that artists of all colours, genders and sexualities are now proudly creating content they want to see, and not simply just what is 'in demand' from the fandom.
The message that I would like to share with readers of this interview is: stay healthy, stay happy, and most importantly, stay you. I also want to take this moment to tell them this - if you are considering becoming a creator, but you are worried about reception to your work, or that it might not be good enough, stop right now! Stop doubting yourself and just give it a shot! I was once like you, scared that my weird and niche interests and writing would be ignored or even mocked by the fandom because no one would like it. Had I not decided to take the plunge, my life would be so drastically different. I've made so many friends, fallen in love, and completely changed my life by creating fan content. It can be scary, but once you take the leap, you will find your feet coming down on solid earth without any danger.

Ep 19: Beaver Tales
Episode 19
[intro music]
PAZ: Hi everyone, welcome back to Stairway to StarClan, a Warriors Cat reread pawdcast. I'm Paz.
JULIAN: I'm Julian.
LIZ: And I'm Liz.
PAZ: And we're back again this week with chapters seven to 10 of Forest of Secrets. I almost said Fire and Ice. No, we're done with that. Kind of a lot of in camp activities these chapters, I would say.
JULIAN: Yeah, some tightly focused drama.
PAZ: Yeah. I don't know anything, any pressing pre-summary thoughts, or should we just go into it?
LIZ: Let's just hop right in.
PAZ: Okay. Chapter seven. After Bluestar dismisses Fireheart, he bumps into Cinderpaw on her way to find herbs for Yellowfang and accompanies her. On the way out, they see Cloudkit and the other kits taunting Brokentail. Fireheart is conflicted and angry, and snatches Cloudkit away from Brokentail, telling the other kits to go back to the nursery. Darkstripe calls Fireheart a kittypet again, and Fireheart explains to Cloudkit what that means. He also tells Cloudkit that they were both kittypets, which shocks Cloudkit. Cloudkit vows to become a good warrior anyway, and Fireheart reminds him about being honorable.
Cinderpaw checks on Brokentail and Darkstripe returns into the den. Fireheart and Cinderpaw let Cloudkit come with them to find herbs, and she teaches Cloudkit a bit of what she's learned about foraging. While they talk about Cloudkit's future, Cloudkit eats some-- doesn't eat. That'd be bad if he. Cloudkit almost eats some poisonous berries before Cinderpaw stops him. Cloudkit, dead. He's dead now.
LIZ: Dead in Miami.
PAZ: Dead in chapter seven of Forest of Secrets. No, that didn't happen. He takes her warning seriously. Afterwards, Cinderpaw wonders what her future will be like, feeling uncertain and pained, and Fireheart encourages her to talk to Bluestar. He thinks briefly about Bluestar's reaction to Graypool's story again, and thinks to himself that it's beyond his understanding.
Chapter eight. Fireheart has a disturbing dream about kits suckling from a faceless grey queen, who then disappears. Spottedleaf appears, sheltering the kits, and the dream ends. When he wakes up, he thinks about Graypool's story again, noticing that Graystripe is also missing, seeing Silverstream, of course. He and Sandstorm decide to go hunting, taking poor Brackenpaw with them since Graystripe has forgotten about him again. Brackenpaw catches a bird, but they suddenly hear the sound of a kit in danger. They find a badger menacing Cloudkit and manage to chase it off. They wonder about how strange it was for a badger to be out in daytime. Cloudkit is returned safely to Brindleface, but Tigerclaw punishes him for wasting everyone's time, though isn't Cloudkit's fault. His punishment is to clean up for the elders.
Meanwhile, Yellowfang has taken Brokentail outside to talk about newleaf, while Darkstripe and Longtail act as guards. She's very gentle and motherly, but Brokentail doesn't respond. Fireheart watches sadly, thinking of mothers and kits, and then Mistyfoot and Stonefur again.
Chapter nine. While Cinderpaw tends to Brackenpaw's wounds from attacking the badger, Fireheart checks in on Cloudkit and helps him with tending to the elders. Fireheart tells him about having to tend to Yellowfang's ticks, her ass ticks, when he was younger, which cheers Cloudkit up.
Later, Fireheart sees Tigerclaw sneaking out of camp, so he decides to follow him. He notices Tigerclaw is getting close to Twolegplace, wondering if he's trying to track down Princess to hurt her. Fireheart also happens to catch a mouse on the way, which gives him an alibi for hunting, when he literally bumps into Tigerclaw soon after.
When Tigerclaw returns to camp, Fireheart checks around Twolegplace, where he smells that a lot of strange, unknown cats have been around in addition to Tigerclaw. He also meets with Princess briefly, and he tells her about how well Cloudkit is growing up, promising to bring him to see her in newleaf. On the way back to camp, he sees that newleaf's thaw has started.
Chapter 10. Fireheart tells Bluestar about the strange cat scents, and she says she'll send patrols out, thinking they might be rogues from Twolegplace. Two days later, newleaf has truly arrived, and there's plenty of food to hunt. Fireheart is pleased to see Cloudkit continuing to tend to the elders, even after his punishment has ended. Tigerclaw tells Fireheart to patrol the RiverClan border and renew the scent markings, and Fireheart realizes Tigerclaw is too clever to be hostile to him in public. He takes some other warriors with him, including Sandstorm and Graystripe, who is the most excited in case he sees Silverstream. However, they don't smell any RiverClan cats at all. The river has overflowed from the thaw, flooding Sunningrocks. And that's the end of the readings this week. What? Does anybody want to say anything?
JULIAN: Sorry, I was on the Wikipedia page for badgers again. Just for when we get to it.
PAZ: The Wikipedia page or like the Warriors wiki page?
JULIAN: No, the regular Wikipedia page.
PAZ: Oh, okay.
JULIAN: I was not on the Warriors wiki page, although I'm sure that's a rich vein.
LIZ: Oh, I'll check.
PAZ: No, don't. There's spoilers. Don't check.
LIZ: I'll just read the first sentence, how about that. There's only the first sentence and then the contents, like table of contents. They do have a picture of a real badger on there.
PAZ: That's beautiful.
LIZ: Not an illustrated one. "Badgers are thickset medium-sized animals with huge muscles and beady eyes that are mainly active at night, and are enemies to cats in the Warriors series." There you go.
JULIAN: Hot damn.
PAZ: Huge muscles.
JULIAN: The thing that I was reading on the actual Wikipedia page for badgers is that apparently they're usually pretty chill, unless they're cornered.
PAZ: Yeah, I thought so.
JULIAN: Yeah, it's saying that they often live alongside and will share their burrows with red foxes.
LIZ: Ooh.
PAZ: Wow.
JULIAN: "Foxes provide badgers with food scraps, and badgers maintain the shared burrows' cleanliness."
LIZ: Roommates.
PAZ: Wow, love is real.
JULIAN: "Although sometimes this can go wrong, and cases are known of badgers driving vixens from their dens and destroying their litters."
PAZ: [gasp]
LIZ: [gasp] Oh.
JULIAN: "In return, red foxes are known to have killed badger cubs in spring."
LIZ: Roommates to enemies.
PAZ: Roommates to enemies.
JULIAN: Sometimes your roommate situation goes south.
PAZ: Yeah, it can be like that with roommates. Yeah, I'm like, I thought badgers were fairly chill. They're not like wolverines.
LIZ: No.
JULIAN: No, they're pretty chill unless you corner them. And that's not what happened here.
PAZ: Maybe this badger has rabies. That was my first thought when it was like, it's out in the daytime.
JULIAN: Oh, that's possible.
PAZ: I was like, does this badger have rabies? Is Brackenpaw gonna get rabies?
LIZ: No.
JULIAN: He hasn't had his shots.
PAZ: Exactly. He hasn't had his rabies shots.
LIZ: This is why Fireheart is like the chosen one, or whatever.
PAZ: Speaking of Brackenpaw, poor Brackenpaw.
JULIAN: God.
LIZ: Poor little guy.
JULIAN: Fuckin, Graystripe, do your job. Do your job.
LIZ: How often does he have to see his girlfriend?
PAZ: Every hour of every day, apparently.
JULIAN: Like I get it. They don't have Skype. They can't write each other letters or like text or whatever. But like, you gotta deal.
LIZ: Make a schedule.
PAZ: Just go out at night, or something.
JULIAN: Have a weekly date night. And then be normal.
PAZ: I'm glad that the text pointed out that Graystripe sucks and is a bad teacher again because he is.
LIZ: Poor Brackenpaw.
JULIAN: Well, and it's having serious impacts on-- yeah. It's having serious impacts on Brackenpaw's like emotional health. He's really unsure of himself. And like, even when he did a really good job fighting off the badger, he's like, oh no, I'm sure it wasn't that-- like I didn't do that good.
LIZ: Brackenpaw is very cool. He caught a bird out of the air and then was very self-conscious about that.
PAZ: Yeah, he did a double-jump.
LIZ: Yeah. Where'd he learn that? Not Graystripe.
PAZ: Hell no. Graystripe wouldn't fight a badger. Graystripe would just leave.
JULIAN: Graystripe would leave the badger for someone else to deal with.
LIZ: There's that part where like Brackenpaw's like, oh, all the other apprentices are so much younger, but they're gonna be warriors before me.
PAZ: I know.
JULIAN: Also, like, Graystripe, do your job. Also Bluestar do your job.
PAZ: Bluestar... horrible leader.
JULIAN: Or-- not to be like, Tigerclaw should get in here. But like, if he's going to be aggressive and mean, maybe he should be aggressive and mean about the actual problems.
LIZ: He should just ground Graystripe for like a month.
JULIAN: Graystripe can deal with the elders' ticks.
PAZ: Okay, like, not to be like Tigerclaw's right again. But him giving Cloudkit a little like, oh, take care of the elders punishment seemed to work. Cloudkit gained some emotional maturity from that, so.
JULIAN: Yeah, I do have a note that's like his reasoning sucks, but this is good for Cloudkit.
PAZ: Yeah, Cloudkit needed that.
JULIAN: Also like, it integrates him better with the clan. Again, worst person you know made a great point.
LIZ: It's very funny. He just became like a mean teacher for a second. It's like, this is the 90s movie where Cloudkit is like the rowdy new transfer. Tigerclaw's like his mean math teacher or something, and he gives him extra homework. It makes his math better. I don't know. Is that how the movies go? Math, right? Math.
PAZ: Yeah. Uh-huh.
JULIAN: I didn't have a TV, so.
PAZ: Sure.
JULIAN: Yes?
LIZ: Well, I've never seen a movie, so we are equal here.
PAZ: I think we jumped around a little bit though. I guess we can--
JULIAN: We did. We jumped straight to chapter eight.
PAZ: I forgot when that happened. For some reason I thought Brackenpaw being abandoned started in chapter seven, but it is not. It's Cinderpaw.
LIZ: Just start, in my mind, poor guy.
JULIAN: Oh, Cinderpaw.
PAZ: Once again, Cinderpaw seems to be doing just fine. But Fireheart's manpain, like internal narrative is terrible. Be quiet.
JULIAN: There is a line about how he's not in the mood for sharing tongues with his friends, which I know we've covered this before. I will never get used to sharing tongues.
LIZ: Why isn't it just called cleaning?
JULIAN: Grooming.
LIZ: Yeah.
JULIAN: Well...
LIZ: There's a word for it. You got it.
PAZ: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know who decided that would be the term for it.
LIZ: Also, since we did like start out with, you know, seeing how like, we got to see how Brackenpaw felt about his situation, it's kind of like an capital-I Interesting contrast to see that in like Cinderpaw, cause we don't really get to see much of that, just kind of like Fireheart's man pain.
PAZ: I mean, she does like voice her feelings in this part, where she's like, I don't really know what I'm doing because we only have three jobs in our society. And no one's told me now what I should do.
LIZ: I guess it's like the way it cycles back to Fireheart, which...
PAZ: Yeah, that's true.
JULIAN: Yeah, the framing is very like Fireheart-centric, in a way that I wish it were not.
PAZ: Yeah, I agree.
JULIAN: God, it is like, he's so close, because there's one point where-- let me find the portion. Yeah. "Cinderpaw was brave and intelligent, and before her accident, she had shown endless energy and commitment to the clan. Surely that couldn't all be thrown away." Yeah, Fireheart, surely it couldn't. Like he's soooooo close. And yet so far away.
LIZ: My guy.
JULIAN: Like I'm glad she's found something that she can do, but blehhhhh.
LIZ: She was given one option by one person.
JULIAN: Well, and it's also in the like bit with the deathberries, um, like she does move very quickly when required. When the plot requires her to be able to move quickly, she sure can.
PAZ: Yeah, it's almost like she could hunt and stuff fine if anyone would just let her, or do anything else.
JULIAN: It's like right after he sees that that Fireheart is like, damn. Too bad she's helpless.
PAZ: Yeah, speaking of helplessness-- disability framed as helplessness, all this stuff with Brokentail at the start of chapter seven is also like what the hell.
LIZ: Ooh. Yikes.
JULIAN: It's so fucked.
LIZ: It's fucked.
PAZ: It frames him as completely helpless. I'm like, all he is is blind. He didn't like...
LIZ: He's still like an adult cat.
JULIAN: Right, he still has claws and like teeth. I fully expected him to kill one of the kits.
PAZ: He's just barely reacted. It's so weird.
JULIAN: Yeah, it's also just like, you know, I'm glad that Fireheart like takes Cloudkit aside and is like, Hey, don't do that.
LIZ: Yeah, it's fucking shitty. Don't do it.
JULIAN: But yeah, the fact that like-- and you know, it is framed as like a fucked up thing that the kits have done to like be taunting their prisoner, their disabled prisoner, but oooh! Yeesh.
PAZ: Yeah, it's like, it's one thing to like-- there was sort of a part where like Darkstripe like threatened Brokentail when like he almost clawed them, but like it wasn't really being framed as like, he's not doing it because he'll get, like, beat up by the guard. It was like-- he just barely reacted. And it was like, oh he couldn't track where the kits were. I'm like, he still has ears. He still has whiskers.
JULIAN: He has ears and whiskers and like scent.
LIZ: That's mostly what they hunt with anyway. It's not like they use their incredible bird's eye view to hunt the mouse.
JULIAN: Yeah, all the descriptions of hunting are like, oh, they hear the mouse rustling in the grass. Like they can't see the mouse.
PAZ: It's so weird.
LIZ: I mean, like we know why it's like this, and it's because the author didn't put the work into it to like-- just thinks this is the only way you can write your disabled character.
JULIAN: Yeah, I guess it really is sort of one finger curls on the monkey's paw. We were like, oh, I wish there were another disabled character besides Cinderpaw.
PAZ: Mm.
JULIAN: And we got one, and...
PAZ: Somehow worse.
JULIAN: He literally has Broken in the name.
PAZ: Yeah, but that scene-- oh, go ahead.
JULIAN: And then Fireheart gets-- oh sorry, I was gonna say, and then Fireheart gets to explain racism to Cloudkit.
LIZ: Oh my god.
PAZ: He literally says we have to work twice as hard. Oh my God.
JULIAN: Head in my hands.
PAZ: It's a kids book so I'll let it pass, but it is very funny.
LIZ: When's Cloudkit gonna have his lunchbox moment?
JULIAN: Oh God.
PAZ: He has his little catnip mouse. All the warriors are like, ew, what's that?
LIZ: Fuck.
JULIAN: Oh, God.
PAZ: Princess gives him some Temptations to take back to camp.
JULIAN: To bring home to them. To all his friends.
LIZ: And when all his friends are like, you know, in college, they're gonna be going to all the overpriced fusion Temptations bars.
PAZ: Oh god.
JULIAN: All the catnip lounges.
LIZ: Terrible.
JULIAN: Also, not only is Fireheart explaining racism to Cloudkit, but he's also telling Cloudkit that he's adopted, which is a lot.
PAZ: Yeah, I mean to be fair, Fireheart thought that he already knew.
JULIAN: Which is also, how did he not know?
PAZ: I don't know. I guess he just never like brought it up with Brindleface.
JULIAN: But they were all teasing him for being a kittypet.
PAZ: Were they?
LIZ: Maybe.
JULIAN: I think so.
PAZ: I don't know if they ever did it to his face.
JULIAN: I guess it was mostly like-- yeah.
PAZ: Well, he said like, so that's why everyone hates me but I don't know if anyone ever called him a kittypet like to his face.
JULIAN: Yeah, no, I think you're right. Damn.
PAZ: I do love that Cloudkit says, "'so that's why the other cats hate me,' he spat. 'They think I'll never be any good because I wasn't born in this dump of a forest.'"
LIZ: Get 'em.
PAZ: So good. Get 'em.
LIZ: I love his like immediate turnaround like fuck this house. None of you are my dad.
PAZ: He's such a funny child.
JULIAN: There's a bit later where when Fireheart meets with Princess, he's like, yeah, your son's doing great. Um, and then mentally he's like, yeah, and he's spoiled and like nosy. But I do love him.
PAZ: He's very fun.
LIZ: Just a little rowdy boy.
PAZ: Yeah, he's a little brat rowdy boy.
LIZ: He's definitely like a season two protagonist.
JULIAN: Mm, mm-hmm.
LIZ: Know what I mean?
PAZ: Yeah? You think, second series?
LIZ: Mm-hmm. It's like, no, it's not about the power of friendship anymore. It's about the power of me winning the sports game, except it is friendship, but I have to get through a couple of my own walls first, because of--
JULIAN: What sport do you think the cats will be inventing?
LIZ: What's a good one for them to play? Soccer. There you go.
PAZ: Yeah, they would love to bat a little ball around.
JULIAN: Or like a sort of--
LIZ: A moss ball.
JULIAN: I was gonna say, sort of a, like, Maya toss ball situation, where you have to get the ball into the hoop.
LIZ: They can have one more job then. It's hoop maker.
JULIAN: Hoop maker and athlete.
PAZ: Wow.
JULIAN: Two more jobs. Three more jobs if they need referees.
PAZ: Wow. They can do like, like inter clan sports competitions, and that'll get all the bloodlust out when they just, you know, they play sports.
JULIAN: What if the cats have football riots though?
LIZ: They would. They will. It's terrible. Who's England in this situation?
JULIAN: ThunderClan, right?
LIZ: Yeah. Boo.
PAZ: Has to be.
JULIAN: Like, thinks they're good, has done many crimes.
PAZ: Exactly.
JULIAN: Although I guess ShadowClan is like the most obviously expansionist, so.
PAZ: They're all England.
LIZ: Ugh.
JULIAN: Maybe ThunderClan is like Germany
LIZ: They'll also probably need more like medics. So that's not a new job, but it is like expanding it.
PAZ: Yeah, more than two doctors.
LIZ: Oh, what a luxury.
JULIAN: More than one and a half doctors.
PAZ: Speaking of the doctors, it's very like stupid that Cinderpaw's like, oh I don't know what I'll do. And it's like, you're acting as the medicine cat. Throughout all these chapters, you were just a second doctor. And Fireheart's also like, I have no idea. Oh, you'll have to talk to Bluestar.
LIZ: Assigned doctor.
PAZ: I bet Yellowfang's gonna be like, um, I thought you were already my apprentice like three weeks ago.
LIZ: Well, did she ask?
PAZ: I guess, I don't know. It's just like--
LIZ: Listen, these cats are pretty dense.
JULIAN: Yellowfang seems like the kind of character who doesn't ask for things but sort of tries to trick people into doing nice things for them. She's like, oh, uh, oh, whoops, I made all this soup. You have to eat it or it'll go to waste.
LIZ: Tricks you into a paying job.
JULIAN: Yeah, Cinderpaw has a little moment where she's like, oh, yeah, I'm gonna have to move out of Yellowfang's den. And it's like, will you? I don't think you will. Has she asked you to?
LIZ: She probably already made you a room.
PAZ: Yeah, I'm pretty sure she has a bed there. I mean not just like her, like recovering bed.
JULIAN: Yellowfang like carefully decorating the walls while Cinderpaw's out.
LIZ: Yellowfang makes her a Welcome Home Temptations cake with a little ribbon.
PAZ: Cinderpaw also says, "ever since I was a tiny kit I wanted to be like Bluestar," and I'm like, no you don't.
LIZ: No. I mean she probably did.
JULIAN: Yeah, that's the lie of being a girlboss.
PAZ: I think you're better off.
JULIAN: Yeah, it seems like Bluestar isn't doing so hot.
LIZ: The part where Fireheart tells her like, oh, Bluestar will know what to do.
PAZ: I know. I was like, I don't think so.
JULIAN: When has Bluestar ever known what to do?
LIZ: For like five chapters in the first book.
PAZ: Yeah, and in like the beginning of book two with WindClan. And then it was kinda over.
LIZ: I don't know what's happening lately. Maybe she got taken over by the ghost of a cat that's not good at being...
JULIAN: Speaking of Yellowfang, the scenes with her and Brokentail are so sad.
PAZ: Like her being like, she's being motherly to him, and him just like, absolutely not responding. Of course he doesn't know that she's his mom.
JULIAN: Right. Woof.
LIZ: [sighs]
PAZ: Drama.
LIZ: There's a part where it says like, she makes like little mom noises at him.
PAZ: Yeah, I was in tears.
JULIAN: Or like, she was like grooming him, and like he does not even move.
LIZ: Aw.
JULIAN: Yellowfang, it's okay. You have so many other children.
PAZ: I know. This kid sucks.
JULIAN: You have so many children who don't suck.
PAZ: I guess we didn't really talk about that prophecy dream Fireheart had, but it wasn't really that interesting.
JULIAN: Yeah, it didn't really tell us anything that we don't already know.
PAZ: Yeah, it was just Spottedleaf being like Fireheart, you idiot. You know who those kits are.
LIZ: Who's that gray cat?
PAZ: I don't know.
LIZ: Well, there are so many gray cats, just.
PAZ: It's true.
LIZ: Like there's definitely more than-- like I knew about them, but it just seems more pointed out now for some reason. Is that just me? Like, it talks about how Cinderpelt is-- sorry, Cinderpaw. I know what happens later, name-wise. How she's gray. We already know Graystripe's gray. There's Graypool, there's Silverstream, there's that other guy. There's Yellowfang?
JULIAN: Stonefur?
PAZ: No, Yellowfang has black fur, I think.
JULIAN: Or like dark brown.
LIZ: Dark brown?
PAZ: Yeah. Persian cat.
JULIAN: Yeah, it does feel like they're like, hey, look, like all these gray cats. Parallels.
LIZ: It's cause there's no black and white.
PAZ: Was Oakheart gray too? How many fucking gray cats were there?
LIZ: Lots.
JULIAN: [typing] Oakheart Warriors wiki. He was... uh, no. He was reddish-brown.
PAZ: Well.
LIZ: That's a lot more uncommon, I think, like a reddish brown cat that isn't like a tabby or something. Like you ever see a brown cat? Like a brown brown cat?
JULIAN: I have, but it's definitely, like--
PAZ: Just pure brown? Yeah, those are a--
JULIAN: A weird-looking color.
PAZ: Those kinds of cats always look really smooth. It's probably a breed, that kind I'm thinking of.
LIZ: They look like just little like wild cats.
JULIAN: Oh, it's a Havana Brown.
LIZ: Hmm.
PAZ: We already talked about Brackenpaw being abandoned. The badger, of course,
LIZ: I don't know, does he become more prominent later?
PAZ: Brackenpaw?
JULIAN: Who?
LIZ: Yeah.
PAZ: I cannot-- I literally cannot remember.
JULIAN: Yeah, I also super do not remember.
LIZ: Is there like, I don't know, like, just like a fanfiction that's like a day in the life of Brackenpaw? What's he do? Poor guy.
PAZ: I feel like maybe I remember this scene.
JULIAN: I don't see anything like super big that he does later, but.
LIZ: Aw. Okay, new Patreon goal. Listen, if we get to $420. I don't know what'll happen.
PAZ: Oh. Sorry, I'm just reading something. I forgot who he mentored.
JULIAN: There is a nice little sentence here, first paragraph. "He was apprenticed early with the name Brackenpaw, mentored by Graystripe. However, Graystripe neglected his duties." Hell yeah he did.
LIZ: Bitch.
PAZ: "And Brackenpaw's training was mostly completed by Fireheart." Uh-huh.
LIZ: Yeah.
JULIAN: Yep.
PAZ: That's right.
LIZ: It's definitely more apparent in these chapters like that the other cats are picking up the slack, too, which is nice, but.
JULIAN: Yeah, Whitestorm and the other guy are like, yeah, we're gonna take all the cats out, all the apprentices out for a hunt.
PAZ: School field trip.
LIZ: But is it like-- does it feel like, oh, I'm like a sixth grader, and these are all first graders?
PAZ: Yeah, that seems to be the vibe because Brackenpaw's like really upset about it.
LIZ: He can't talk about Fortnite with them. They're too young.
JULIAN: Oh shit, new pixel art of Graystripe just dropped.
PAZ: Oh shit.
LIZ: What?
JULIAN: I think this is new. I don't remember seeing this. He's all fluffy in this pixel art. From the Warriors wiki.
LIZ: Whoa.
PAZ: Whoa. Why's he so dark?
JULIAN: I know, right?
LIZ: No, it's because he's wet from being in Riverclan all the time.
PAZ: Of course.
LIZ: [snickers]
PAZ: What? Got that trap neuter return ear?
LIZ: I was just gonna say that. What happened to you, Graystripe?
PAZ: Maybe if his balls got cut off that would solve a lot of problems.
JULIAN: God.
LIZ: I think he'd still be a bitch. He didn't have a girlfriend when he was like, mm, I don't know about this Tigerclaw being a murder thing
PAZ: God, I can't get over that. I mean, there's a badger scene. There's Cloudkit getting his punishment.
LIZ: What is the level of sentience that badgers have here?
PAZ: I don't know.
JULIAN: Well. I mean, there's some stuff later. But I don't know about badgers in general.
PAZ: Yeah, I don't know if all badgers are sentient or not.
LIZ: Okay, well, the way you guys said that made me think there's like a special badger.
PAZ: No comment.
LIZ: Hmm.
JULIAN: I really love how much of this description is clearly copied from Wikipedia or like an encyclopedia article about badgers. I don't think that it's been revealed anywhere in the Warrior books that male and female badgers generally have the same head-body length falling between 56 and 90 centimeters.
LIZ: God bless.
JULIAN: I just don't think the cats are thinking in centimeters.
LIZ: Oh, they use inches?
JULIAN: Oh, there's a source for all this. Oh, it's revealed on animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu. Yep.
PAZ: Of course.
JULIAN: I do love that they continue to use the revealed language for...
PAZ: It's so funny. I was reading about the supposed Warriors film and it was of course, all revealed on variety.com.
LIZ: Variety?
PAZ: Yeah.
LIZ: I see.
JULIAN: Oh, this badger looks so cute. There's a badger art from the badger from Secrets of the Clans, which is one of the Warrior guidebooks, and it has--
PAZ: Oh my gosh.
LIZ: Oh my god.
JULIAN: The roundest, softest face.
PAZ: Oh my god, I'm in tears.
LIZ: Oh my god.
PAZ: This badger looks like the picture of the cat who's been photoshopped to be crying.
LIZ: What has this badger seen?
JULIAN: Also, that's not a Eurasian badger. That's an American badger.
PAZ: Yeah, that is definitely not.
JULIAN: That's the wrong species.
LIZ: What the fuck's a Eurasian badger look like?
JULIAN: It's got the long--
PAZ: It's the classic like black and white striped one, right?
JULIAN: Yeah, so like if you look at the picture at the top of the wiki article, it's a badger with a much longer face with stripes that go all the way down. And that's a Eurasian badger, and the American badger has a much rounder babier looking face.
LIZ: What a sad looking little guy. What have you seen? Do you think the American badger's looking over at like England or whatever with its incredible Hawkeye vision like, oh, that poor little Brackenpaw. If it was me, I wouldn't have attacked a little baby kitten. Oh, those poor cats.
JULIAN: Oh, I'm sorry. I know we got to move off of the Wikipedia page, but I found an amazing picture of an American badger.
PAZ: Please.
LIZ: We'll post these badger pictures on the Twitter. Don't you guys worry.
PAZ: If we remember. Oh my god.
JULIAN: Look at that lad!
LIZ: Oh my God. Oh my god.
PAZ: Holy shit.
LIZ: This looks fake.
PAZ: This looks like they stretched the jpeg.
JULIAN: It's on illinois.gov.
LIZ: What?
JULIAN: It's on the Department of Natural Resources.
PAZ: [wheezing] What is-- what--
LIZ: Chunky.
PAZ: What's wrong with its head?
JULIAN: I mean, they fucking, they all look like this.
LIZ: Nothing. It's perfect.
JULIAN: Here's from the Encyclopedia Britannica.
PAZ: Oh my god.
LIZ: I didn't know they looked like this.
JULIAN: Look at him. There he goes, trot, trot.
LIZ: His powerful stance.
PAZ: They're so wide. I can't. They look like potatoes.
JULIAN: Absolute legend.
LIZ: That's how they make those tunnels. They just like wiggle.
JULIAN: Here's a European badger, just to like for comparison. We can-- I'm putting all these images in the chat so we can tweet them later. Just a long boy. Just a looong slinky boy.
PAZ: Yeah, that's a much less wide, wide lad.
LIZ: Very classic.
PAZ: Still very round nose.
JULIAN: Oh, here's one running.
LIZ: Oh my god.
JULIAN: Thank you Shutterstock. Thank you Shutterstock. Thank you whichever photographer hid out in a wild, in like a lane somewhere in England.
PAZ: Oh my god. Look at it go.
JULIAN: To catch this lad.
LIZ: Oh my god.
PAZ: It looks like--
LIZ: He go.
PAZ: You know the like boom mic on TVs that they--
LIZ: Yes.
PAZ: It looks like one of those.
JULIAN: Oh, I love him.
LIZ: What's that thing you keep telling me to get for my mic?
PAZ: Oh, a pop filter?
LIZ: Yeah. He looks like a pop filter.
JULIAN: I'm also seeing an image that says, it's a infographic about the differences between the European badger and American badger, but [laughing] the European badger is clearly a beaver.
LIZ: Wait.
JULIAN: Like, could not more clearly be a beaver.
PAZ: What?
LIZ: Wait a minute. Is this just a little nature joke? Little humor?
JULIAN: No, this is a whole... everything you need to know.
LIZ: Oh dear.
PAZ: Well, the first thing you need to know is that's not the European badger.
JULIAN: That's not a fucking badger. Oh, I know that this is clearly a content farm and someone just did a bad job. But this is a beaver. This is a beaver.
LIZ: This looks like a meme.
JULIAN: They do have it correct that none of these are good pets.
PAZ: No.
LIZ: True. God, look at that guy go. I can't stop looking at it. It's just running. Where's he going?
JULIAN: He has important business.
LIZ: Gotta go attack a baby. Heard that baby's an atheist.
PAZ: That's why the badger went for it.
JULIAN: The badger's here to enforce, uh. Oh, I'm sorry, I can't get over the beaver.
PAZ: Okay, we gotta move on.
LIZ: It's a badger.
JULIAN: We gotta move on. We gotta move on.
LIZ: A European badger.
PAZ: Cloudkit got attacked by a beaver.
LIZ: Just turns around and like, waps you.
JULIAN: Oh. Alright, what else happened in these chapters?
PAZ: I guess the next thing we didn't talk about, um, I mean we talked a little about... I guess Fireheart and Cloudkit have another little bonding scene getting the moss.
JULIAN: Yeah, that was cute. And then Tigerclaw's up to some shit again.
PAZ: Of course. Yeah, Tigerclaw going to Twolegplace to do nefarious things. There was a point where his pawprints were described as massive, which was extremely funny to me.
JULIAN: I love the image of Tigerclaw's just enormous big ol beans.
PAZ: Huge beans.
LIZ: Big ol beans compared to cats, though. How big could they be?
PAZ: Well, have you ever seen a cat with real, real big paw to body ratio? That's what I'm imagining. Like he's a big cat but his paws are even bigger.
LIZ: Yeah, but he could still fit in like...
PAZ: What if Tigerclaw's like a polydactyl? Is that what they're called?
LIZ: Oh, absolutely.
JULIAN: [gasps] Yes.
PAZ: Multiple toes.
LIZ: He's got thumbs so that's why he can commit all his crimes.
PAZ: It all makes sense.
LIZ: All dexterity. How did Tigerclaw kill all those other cats? He's got a gun.
PAZ: Holy shit.
JULIAN: I mean, he has been hanging out with all these back alley cats that smell like trash.
LIZ: These city cats.
JULIAN: This is how guns enter the rural English countryside.
PAZ: I love that Fireheart just keeps collecting evidence that Tigerclaw's evil, and he just can't do anything about it because Bluestar is useless.
LIZ: I just can't believe that in these chapters, there's that part specifically where he says Bluestar will know what to do.
PAZ: [snorts]
JULIAN: Right, it's like last-- well, I mean, I feel like he still thinks it's his fault, that he like didn't frame it right last time. Which is very sad.
PAZ: Yeah, but like, he tried to tell her twice. And each time she's been like, no,
LIZ: But it's definitely like being set up for that, right? Because this is very like his own perspective and it's gonna be a dramatic irony turn later.
JULIAN: Mm.
LIZ: Is that too hopeful?
PAZ: We'll see.
LIZ: [darkly] Mm.
PAZ: He does literally run into Tigerclaw.
JULIAN: He does. It's very funny.
LIZ: Right, he's like--
JULIAN: Bounces right off him anime-style.
LIZ: No, he's tailing him, right, and then he's like, oh fuck, but there's this mouse. Ooh, but I gotta--
PAZ: It's so funny. His little cat attention span.
LIZ: It's very video game, too. It's like, okay, main quest. Wait, fuck. Ooh. Mm. Give me a second.
PAZ: I'll be real quick. I just gotta. Yeah, there's a nasty cat smell. Princess shows back up. She's like, you're so thin.
JULIAN: She's like, hey, you're feeding my son, right?
LIZ: Princess having some second thoughts. It's like, maybe I should have gotten my fucking kid vaccinated before he went.
JULIAN: Maybe I should have let him reach like an adult size. Then his growth wouldn't be stunted.
PAZ: She's like, are you getting enough to eat, and Fireheart's just like, no. Doesn't even try to lie.
JULIAN: Imagine being Princess, though. It's like, your shithead brother comes back, is clearly malnourished, and you're like, oh my god, like, I have food at home. Come get some food. And he's like, I can't. The clan. It's like, buddy.
PAZ: He's just in a cult.
JULIAN: He's in a cult. She's trying her best to help him. Well, not really. She's not.
LIZ: Well, she--
PAZ: No, she gave her son to the cult.
JULIAN: She gave him her son.
LIZ: He could have just rolled in some garlic or whatever.
PAZ: Right? Didn't he roll in fox dung before? That was fine.
LIZ: Eat the Temptations.
JULIAN: Eat the Temptations. And then eat some like, I don't know, chives or something so no one can smell the Temptations, the sweet, sweet smell of Temptations on your breath.
LIZ: Just eat some catnip, damn.
PAZ: A single Temptation would kill a Warrior cat dead. Be overwhelming.
JULIAN: God, they really are just like medieval peasants out there in the woods, eating their bowls of gruel. If they got a single bite of tender ocean fish dinner, they would just keel over.
LIZ: Don't they make like beggin strips or whatever for cats now?
JULIAN: Mm-hmm.
PAZ: Probably.
LIZ: You think like the Warriors have a little, little pot of catgrass? I don't think so.
PAZ: No.
LIZ: Everything out there's poisonous.
JULIAN: Well, at the fancy boutique pet bakery in my neighborhood, because of course there is one of those, they do have whole dried fish treats.
LIZ: Wow.
JULIAN: That you can give your cat, if you I guess don't care about having to sweep up after them.
LIZ: Wow.
JULIAN: We have never given one of those to Chickpea because I think she would-- it would be too much for her.
PAZ: No offense to Chickpea, but she doesn't seem to have very discerning taste.
JULIAN: No, no, she really wants Cheez-its.
LIZ: Aw.
JULIAN: She wants Cheez-its so bad.
PAZ: I can relate. I could go for some Cheez-its.
LIZ: She does look like someone who loves to crunch.
JULIAN: Today she knocked-- she loves to crunch. She loves to crunch, and I love to hear her crunch, so it's a win-win. Today she climbed on top of the fridge, again, to try to get the food that is no longer there because we moved it. And she knocked over like the 12 pack of Coke that was up there.
PAZ: Oh my gosh.
LIZ: Oh my god. Does she even weigh 12 packs of coke?
JULIAN: No. Well, there were probably like five or six in there. Um, but she tried to jump on it and then obviously her momentum-- she didn't have great purchase on top of the fridge, so it fell off. I just heard a clatter and came out, and she was looking very, um, you know cats do when it's like, oh I didn't do that. I'm the most distinguished.
PAZ: Kip goes up on the top of our fridge and knocks things over on purpose. He'll like look at me, and knock it off the top of the fridge.
JULIAN: Real Cloudkit. Real Cloudkit energies on that one.
LIZ: Kip's an atheist.
PAZ: Absolutely. Wow. Chapter 10.
JULIAN: Chapter 10.
LIZ: Wait, wait.
PAZ: Oh, yeah?
LIZ: No, just, what if we got one of those like, you know those YouTubes that are always like me making a gourmet cat-friendly meal for my cats?
PAZ: Yeah?
LIZ: We just gotta do that. And I don't know. I think that that has more pull than Temptations, maybe. It's like I made you cat sushi, or I made you like a cat cake.
PAZ: Are you saying that's what'll get Fireheart inside?
LIZ: I think so.
JULIAN: He's got discerning tastes is what you're saying.
LIZ: Mm-hmm.
JULIAN: He needs that raw meat.
PAZ: He does.
JULIAN: What even happened in chapter 10? I just have a note, Whitestorm is a good guy.
PAZ: That's true. Was he even mentioned?
JULIAN: Which is accurate.
PAZ: Was that him taking out the apprentices or something?
LIZ: I think so, yeah.
JULIAN: I think that's where I've, yeah.
PAZ: I've seen a lot of, I think Whitestorm X Tigerclaw stuff on YouTube. I think that's right.
LIZ: That is very funny.
PAZ: I love Tigerclaw's many exes. First Redtail. Now Whitestorm.
JULIAN: Well, I guess the reason we don't remember anything from chapter 10 is it's literally eight pages long.
PAZ: Yeah, it's real short. Fireheart tells Bluestar that there's nasty cats over at Twolegplace, but can't tell her that Tigerclaw is there, because he's like she just won't believe me.
JULIAN: Then they go on a little patrol and they go to RiverClan, and the river's flooded. Uh-oh.
PAZ: It sure is flooded.
JULIAN: I guess that's the downside to having your camp in the middle of the river.
PAZ: Yeah, I wonder if their camp's doing okay.
JULIAN: Yeah. Uh-oh.
LIZ: Oh boy.
PAZ: Uh-oh. I didn't even think about that.
LIZ: Whuh-oh.
JULIAN: I'm sure it's fine that Graystripe is on this patrol.
PAZ: Listen, one time he decides to do work is when he's like maybe I'll see my gf on the way.
JULIAN: God.
PAZ: Please, what are you gonna fucking do if you do see her?
LIZ: He's so annoying.
JULIAN: Well, he's gonna have a double date with Sandstorm and Fireheart and him and his gf and also--
PAZ: Running whoever. What's that guy's name? Runningwind.
JULIAN: Also Runningwind is there.
PAZ: Wow. Fifth wheel Runningwind.
LIZ: Well, maybe Runningwind will find his own starcrossed like cat romance. Triple date. Yes.
JULIAN: There you go.
PAZ: Perfect.
JULIAN: Runningwind slash, who's in... Stonefur.
PAZ: Oh.
LIZ: What do we call that?
PAZ: Runningstone. I'm Googling Runningwind. Don't Google Runningwind, Liz.
LIZ: I'm never going to get into that fucking spoiler channel. What's going on in there? I don't know.
PAZ: Runningwind stories Wattpad. "This is my spin on Warriors: The Prophecies Begin, just with a reader insert. I do not own Warriors. I only own the plot points I use." Oh, here we go. Redtail x Runningwind. Ooh.
LIZ: What?
PAZ: Tell me more.
JULIAN: Ohh.
PAZ: I'm intrigued.
JULIAN: I think this is literally the first time we've seen Runningwind say anything onscreen.
PAZ: Okay, this is someone posting on the forums, "I am utterly baffled by this ship."
LIZ: Well, them saying that makes me want to be like--
PAZ: Oh, fuck this person. They say, "I understand the trans Redtail thing, but I don't really like it. But I don't really care too much." Still, die.
JULIAN: Well, I don't care about you. I don't care about your opinion.
LIZ: Well, yeah.
PAZ: Your opinion is horrible.
JULIAN: And I think Redtail is trans. This is the first I've heard of this headcanon and I would now die for it.
LIZ: Redtail is trans and gay.
PAZ: We've heard of trans Redtail before. Yeah.
JULIAN: Have we?
PAZ: Apparently Redtail-- yeah, that was that one Youtuber's name.
JULIAN: Oh my god, right. It's the YouTuber. I'm sorry.
PAZ: Apparently Redtail was a male calico so yeah, trans Redtail.
JULIAN: Oh!
LIZ: Hell yeah.
PAZ: Just like Hadesclipse.
JULIAN: Just like Hadesclipse.
PAZ: Redtail likes Hadesclipse. This is my self insert.
LIZ: You're gonna have to fight Runningwind.
JULIAN: I guess Runningwind has been here before on screen. I just forgot about him. He helped train Brackenpaw back in Fire and Ice when Graystripe was once again not doing his job.
LIZ: He's just like a nice fellow.
JULIAN: Yeah, he's just a guy.
PAZ: I do not respect the person who made this forum thread at all.
LIZ: Yeah, get outta here, OP.
JULIAN: Uh-oh.
PAZ: Yeah?
JULIAN: I've read some stories or some spoilers for, uh.
PAZ: Yeah?
JULIAN: For later.
PAZ: Well, how bad--
LIZ: Wait, hold on a second. Wait. How come Julian gets to do it and not me?
PAZ: Because Julian's read the books!
JULIAN: Cause this is all shit that I should already know, I just don't remember.
LIZ: Mm. Hmm.
PAZ: Listen, once we finish the Power of Three, you can go wild, because that's up to where we got to. I don't know what we were doing.
LIZ: Chapter 10?
JULIAN: Chapter 10. The eight-page chapter 10. RiverClan is flooded.
PAZ: RIP RiverClan.
LIZ: Oh, sorry. Go ahead.
PAZ: I was just saying RIP RiverClan.
LIZ: I do want to talk about the one thing where Tigerclaw's telling Fireheart to patrol and then Fireheart is like, oh, he's too smart to be hostile to me in public. But he is, though.
PAZ: Right? He's already been hostile to you many times.
LIZ: He calls you a little bitch like every single day in front of people.
PAZ: For real.
JULIAN: It's like, you don't really need to set Fire-- or set Tigerclaw up as like conniving because he's already been conniving. We've seen him be conniving. Part of his connivingness is that he calls you a little bitch every day, and you can't do anything about it because he's the deputy.
PAZ: It's not like-- his whole posse calls Fireheart a little bitch. Fireheart got called a kittypet like two chapters ago.
LIZ: Right? The problem is that people don't care.
JULIAN: Fucking Longtail and Dustpelt.
PAZ: Yeah, and Darkstripe.
LIZ: One of those is like someone's brother, right?
JULIAN: Dustpelt is Sandstorm's brother.
PAZ: No, no, no, no, no.
LIZ: No, wait.
PAZ: They were just apprentices. He's, um, I think he's technically Ravenpaw's brother.
LIZ: Oh, right right right.
JULIAN: Is he?
PAZ: Or something like that.
LIZ: Someone is Ravenpaw's brother.
JULIAN: Oh, I just assumed they were siblings because they were...
PAZ: But it's like, not really--
JULIAN: Oh, you're right. He is Ravenpaw's brother.
LIZ: Wild.
JULIAN: And he's Longtail's half brother.
PAZ: Bitch.
JULIAN: Oh, he's such a little bitch because Darkstripe was his mentor.
LIZ: Duh.
PAZ: Oh. Sorry, I just saw a spoiler for the.... Oh man.
LIZ: These cats. I think that's it though for the chapters, right?
JULIAN: Yeah.
PAZ: Yeah. Sorry. Sorry, Dustpelt had a son.
LIZ: What?
PAZ: Called Spiderleg.
JULIAN: [snorting]
LIZ: You can't do that. What about a cat is spidery?
JULIAN: Peyton's gonna be so angry.
LIZ: Please.
PAZ: That's incredible. I'm clicking Spiderleg's wiki page.
LIZ: Wait, I think Dustpelt should have eight children, no, nine children, and they should all be like Spiderleg 1, Spiderleg 2, Spiderleg 3, until you get to 8. And then you should have one just be like Spiderhead.
JULIAN: Oh holy shit.
LIZ: And then they can stand on top of each other like a mech.
JULIAN: Dustpelt is also Birchfall's father.
PAZ: Oh.
JULIAN: Birchfall of the bad name.
PAZ: I bet Peyton hates Spiderleg too.
JULIAN: Yeah, I guess, uh. Well, whoever the leader is the person who gave the leg name because Spiderkit is... I mean, it's a weird name. But it's a fine one.
LIZ: Oh God.
JULIAN: Oh, I hate that the pixel art here is this cat is looking directly at me. Usually the pixel art, the cat is kind of like, you know, three quarter view, like looking off into the distance. Spiderleg? Looking into my eyes.
PAZ: Sorry, what? Here's a quote caption. "Spiderleg annoyed with Dovepaw when she talks about brown animals." What?
JULIAN: What?
LIZ: Hey, Spiderleg, you, hey, what?
PAZ: What? Brown animals.
JULIAN: [yells]
LIZ: What is that noise you just made?
JULIAN: [hysterical laughter]
PAZ: Hold on. Just gonna screenshot this.
JULIAN: [creaks]
PAZ: If my phone will let me.
JULIAN: Oh God.
PAZ: It all comes full circle.
JULIAN: It really does.
LIZ: [laughing] Oh my god.
PAZ: I clicked "brown animals," and it took me to the beaver page.
LIZ: What does it mean?
PAZ: "Friendly? No."
LIZ: What does it mean?
JULIAN: Beavers aren't friendly?
PAZ: No.
JULIAN: "Relation to clan cats. If provoked they're able to kill a cat with their sharp front teeth."
PAZ: Holy shit.
LIZ: Is that true?
JULIAN: That has never happened.
PAZ: I do not think so.
LIZ: Wait. [typing] Can beavers kill cats. [gasps]
JULIAN: Beaver versus cat.
LIZ: "Beaver attacks can be fatal to domestic animals."
JULIAN: [gasps]
PAZ: Holy shit.
LIZ: There's a whole Wikipedia page for beaver attack.
PAZ: I never would have guessed.
LIZ: Oh, you gotta see this beaver. You gotta see the beaver they use. Look at him, looking at you.
JULIAN: Oh.
PAZ: Oh no.
LIZ: What the fuck?
PAZ: He's so round. I'm so scared.
LIZ: Got his little paws together like [evil laugh] I will.
JULIAN: A beaver has killed a man.
LIZ: What?
JULIAN: Yeah.
PAZ: "Relation to clan cats." Oh, go ahead.
JULIAN: Um, I mean, okay, so this is a 60 year old guy who grabbed the beaver, to take a photo with it.
LIZ: Oh my god.
JULIAN: And the beaver bit open his femoral artery.
PAZ: Oh, okay, he shouldn't have done that.
LIZ: Yikes.
JULIAN: So it was like, you shouldn't have done it. Also, it was like bad luck. It just happened to get the femoral.
PAZ: Here's what the Warriors wiki has to say. "Relation to clan cats. Beavers are known to be both inquisitive with cats, but also aggressive if provoked."
JULIAN: Oh my god?
LIZ: Well, how many beavers are they gonna see in England?
JULIAN: There are beavers in England.
PAZ: Yeah, there are beavers.
LIZ: Have we covered this? This feels...
PAZ: I feel like we have, yes.
JULIAN: I think we have. There's beavers in the Narnia book.
LIZ: Aren't they like-- isn't it that like beavers have been recently reintroduced or something?
JULIAN: Yes, we talked about this because they were hunted for their fur to almost extinction, and then they made a big comeback.
PAZ: To kill cats.
LIZ: Good for them?
JULIAN: Good for them. Aw, this is one sleeping and he's all curled up into his tail.
LIZ: I'm just looking at the list of non fatal attacks on humans by beavers.
PAZ: Get 'em.
LIZ: While you say this. Goddamn.
JULIAN: Oh, this image is too powerful for Discord.
PAZ: Understandable.
LIZ: Can you screenshot it?
JULIAN: Oh, I just posted the link, because it's 6000 by 4000 pixels.
LIZ: Oh my god.
PAZ: Aw. Have you guys seen baby beavers? They are an incredible shape.
LIZ: Oh yeah. Mm-hmm.
JULIAN: Oh, I don't think I have. Baby beavers. Listeners, I hope you enjoy our animal googling. Oh!
PAZ: They're just such a good shape. They're so fuzzy. They're so round.
JULIAN: Oh, they're so fluffy. Oh, I highly recommend everyone to Google baby beavers.
PAZ: Yes, please. There's some good videos on YouTube, I think.
JULIAN: Yep. They're so small. This is from I Can Has Cheezburger, a site I did not realize was still on the internet.
LIZ: I don't think it can die at this point. I think it's an establishment, right?
JULIAN: Here it is. Their Facebook page is actively posting things as of 47 minutes ago.
PAZ: On Facebook?
JULIAN: There's a listicle about 18 cats demonstrating their cat logic.
LIZ: [groans]
PAZ: Tigerclaw voice.
LIZ: Tigerclaw voice, debate me.
PAZ: I'll destroy them with facts and logic.
JULIAN: Wow.
LIZ: Also sorry, on my search for can beavers kill cats, like the fourth result is just the beaver Warriors wiki page.
PAZ: What do you call a baby beaver? Kits.
LIZ: Baby.
JULIAN: Aw.
PAZ: They're kits, too.
LIZ: [laughs] Can I-- oh my god. Can I give you some suggested searches from this?
JULIAN: Yeah.
LIZ: Okay. One. "Are beavers venomous?"
PAZ: No, that's a platypus.
JULIAN: I understand the confusion, though.
PAZ: Yeah, they're a little similar.
LIZ: Two. "How to survive a beaver attack."
PAZ: Run.
JULIAN: Don't get bitten in the femoral artery and you'll be good.
LIZ: Three. "Beaver bite force PSI."
JULIAN: Now what is the beaver bite force psi? I'm very curious.
LIZ: Let me check. 180 pounds.
PAZ: Holy shit.
JULIAN: That's a lot.
PAZ: Well, I mean they have to bite hard to take down trees, I guess.
LIZ: Goddamn.
JULIAN: Yeah, damn.
LIZ: Compared to a human's 88 pounds. Good Lord.
PAZ: We don't have shit.
JULIAN: That's pretty strong on humans, too.
PAZ: Yeah, I'm not biting that hard.
JULIAN: No wonder my teeth hurt all the time.
PAZ: I don't have anything else to say about these chapters.
JULIAN: Yeah, I think we've wrapped up.
PAZ: I forgot to decide on something to talk about.
JULIAN: I mean, we did talk about beavers for quite some time.
PAZ: We did.
[meow]
JULIAN: I wonder if-- okay, I'm gonna do a quick Google to see if... beaver roleplay.
LIZ: Oh my god.
PAZ: Oh my god. Beaver kids book.
JULIAN: Oh no, this is Narnia roleplay. That's not what I want. Beaver roleplay Proboards.
PAZ: Oh shit.
JULIAN: Beaver [sighs]. Yep, here we go. I found-- this is on the Disney Roleplay World.
PAZ: Disney?
LIZ: Oh?
JULIAN: Yeah.
LIZ: Beavers in Disney?
JULIAN: This is an Angry Beavers RP.
LIZ: What?
PAZ: Oh my god, that show. You don't know that show, Liz?
LIZ: No?
PAZ: I think it was a Nickelodeon cartoon. It was like the era of like, Catdog and such.
LIZ: Oh.
JULIAN: Yeah, it's a band of outcast beavers trying to take over the world, or take over the woods, sorry, not the world.
PAZ: Why not the world?
JULIAN: Holy shit, this is dark. Um, they are the young Zachs family. The head beaver, Jason, catches Treeflower. Kate, who was with her, isn't seen, but finds her mother dead after Jason kills her to send a message.
PAZ: What?
JULIAN: Is there a way to bring her back or stop Jason? Fuck!
PAZ: I hope so.
JULIAN: Oh, it's so much to read this very intensive, um, there are lions here?!
LIZ: What?
PAZ: I don't remember that.
JULIAN: This roleplay includes lions and bears. It's a lot to see this really intensive moment where this beaver is facing down lions. And she's screaming for her uncle, Daggett.
PAZ: Oh yeah, I remember. Yep, that was the name.
JULIAN: "'Mama, Daddy, Uncle Daggy-Waggy,' she screams."
LIZ: Oh my god.
JULIAN: Also a lot to see, um... is this Tyler Posey? Someone's shooting a gun at me in the gif.
PAZ: What?
JULIAN: In this signature about beavers.
PAZ: What year was this happening?
JULIAN: This was posted in 2014.
PAZ: That is much more recent than I would have thought.
JULIAN: Yeah, it didn't get off the ground too far. Only about 10 posts here.
PAZ: I wonder why.
JULIAN: Oh, no, I'm sorry, there's four pages of this. I'm just kidding.
LIZ: Oh my god.
JULIAN: Yeah, the final post is, "'Kate, it's time for lunch,' Norb called to his daughter." So I presume they--
PAZ: They survived.
JULIAN: They dealt with the lions.
LIZ: They went to lunch.
PAZ: Man, Warrior Cats needs to step up.
LIZ: This is riveting.
JULIAN: These beavers have sofas? I never watched the cartoon.
PAZ: Oh yeah, they live in like a-- I don't remember exactly.
JULIAN: Little house?
PAZ: Yeah.
JULIAN: Yeah, no, Kate's mom fuckin died. Rip Treeflower.
PAZ: Wow.
JULIAN: I am kind of surprised but there hasn't been like a big sprawling story about a society of beavers.
PAZ: Yeah, they also are like communal animals. Are beavers not interesting enough? I think they're cool.
JULIAN: Wait, hold up. What was the Redwall book? Oh no, those were otters.
LIZ: An otter is just a beaver that hasn't been flattened at the back.
JULIAN: Because I was thinking of Taggerung, which in hindsight was I think a little racist. But that was about otters and not beavers.
LIZ: You know that--
JULIAN: Are beavers--
LIZ: Oh, go ahead.
JULIAN: Are they evil in Redwall?
PAZ: Are they in Redwall?
LIZ: Beavers?
JULIAN: Oh, there are no beavers.
LIZ: Well, when was Redwall written?
JULIAN: Redwall wiki. "According to Brian Jacques, beavers do not appear in subsequent Redwall novels to reflect the fact that there are no longer any native beavers in Great Britain."
LIZ: Well. Wait.
JULIAN: "The solitary beaver is the only beaver in the Redwall series and was very rarely mentioned."
PAZ: Holy shit. Who's the solitary beaver?
JULIAN: He stopped Cluny from climbing up the wall in the first battle of the Late Rose Summer Wars.
PAZ: I want to know more about this guy.
JULIAN: And he uses a crossbow. Damn.
PAZ: Wow, apparently beavers have like, mate for life.
JULIAN: Aw.
LIZ: Aw.
PAZ: Wikipedia doesn't have a fictional beavers page.
JULIAN: Why? They have a fictional badgers page.
PAZ: Maybe there just aren't many fictional beavers.
JULIAN: Oh my God. I know this is not a Redwall padcast.
LIZ: Padcast?
JULIAN: Padcast. But I have found a tidbit of Redwall lore that is blowing the series wide open. Bees can communicate in Redwall.
LIZ: What?
PAZ: What?
JULIAN: "Indicated by a statement at the end of the books where the guerrilla shrews learn to speak the bee language so they can trade and argue. This is not noted in other books."
PAZ: Holy shit.
JULIAN: That means that if bees can communicate, half of the animals eat insects. Are they eating sentient insects?
PAZ: Ahh.
LIZ: Horrible. I hate that. What if you're like, God, I don't know, like a bird or mouse or whatever, and you just like, eat a cricket, and it's just like, [tinily] nooo.
JULIAN: [very small] I have a family.
LIZ: Gruesome.
PAZ: This is a problem when you make all the animals in sentient societies.
JULIAN: Well, I feel like Redwall tried to handle it by making all the carnivores evil.
PAZ: I've never read Redwall.
JULIAN: Yeah, they make most of the carnivores, like-- which is its own problem because then it's like these species are inherently evil.
PAZ: They just did Zootopia. I mean, I guess Zootopia did Redwall, is what I should say.
LIZ: With cops? Does Redwall have cops?
JULIAN: Um...
PAZ: They have like soldiers.
JULIAN: It's sort of like a medieval situation. So they have like soldiers, and like, there might be like a sheriff or something. There's not like the police.
PAZ: There's only 21 pages in the fictional beavers category.
LIZ: That's so sad.
JULIAN: That's so sad. That feels--
PAZ: This is an undertapped market.
LIZ: They have architecture. They feel rife for like anthropomorph-- word I can't say. You know, when they become little guys with little houses?
JULIAN: Hey, children's book editors, hot new idea, fictional story about beavers, species of beavers. They're-- not species, family of beavers. Society of beavers. That's the word I was looking for.
PAZ: That should be the next Erin Hunter endeavor.
JULIAN: Right? I guess maybe the concern is, while they do have a society and they do have little hands and they do build things, they don't attack each other and kill each other?
PAZ: That's true. No, but they're very territorial. Maybe they do.
LIZ: They can attack and kill us. That's gotta be something.
JULIAN: That's true.
PAZ: They probably have fights.
LIZ: Maybe it's like the next, you know, great civilization is one of beavers and they've got to fight the humans or something.
JULIAN: There you go.
LIZ: Terrible remnants of the last one.
PAZ: Beavers inherit the earth.
JULIAN: There was a beaver dam in the creek at home, and they were-- they did a lot. They really dammed up that creek.
PAZ: Yeah, they work hard. Okay, if Erin Hunter was to make a beaver series, what would it be called? So the bears one is called Seekers. I think the canceled dog one was like...
JULIAN: No, that's the Africa one.
LIZ: Designers. Planners.
JULIAN: Architects. Builders.
LIZ: Constructors. Oh, Creators.
JULIAN: Oooh.
PAZ: Ooh.
LIZ: There's also Devisors, which sounds a little, you know.
PAZ: Oh, that sounds like they'll be like little wizards.
JULIAN: Yeah, I like Devisors.
PAZ: Devisors is real good.
JULIAN: Survivors is the dog series.
PAZ: Oh, Devisors is a little close to Survivors. But I think it's still very good.
LIZ: Artisan.
PAZ: I want little wizard beavers.
JULIAN: Right? They're so ripe to be little magic guys. Little magicians. They got their little hands.
LIZ: I feel like every other creature that's vaguely in the shape of a beaver, which is like kind of a brown egg, has gotten that treatment already. Like, you know, badgers, which they're not really brown, but they're eh. Porcupine. I feel like I've definitely seen more porcupine than beaver.
PAZ: Yeah. Why are beavers so underutilized?
LIZ: Otters. Capybaras.
JULIAN: I don't think we've done capybaras.
PAZ: Friends at the Table has done capybaras now.
LIZ: I think someone's done capybaras.
JULIAN: I mean, maybe there's a children's book.
LIZ: Moles. Voles.
JULIAN: That's just Redwall.
PAZ: Yeah, those little guys are Redwall.
LIZ: A raccoon isn't brown but it does have little hands and is about the same shape, and they've definitely done those.
PAZ: There's like Sly Cooper, yeah.
JULIAN: Yeah. Ranger Rick.
PAZ: Justice for beavers.
LIZ: Let the beaver have its moment. It's basically like a water clan, right?
PAZ: Yeah.
LIZ: Okay, there should just be like a direct lifting of all the Warriors clans into just like beaver clan, badger clan. That's like--
PAZ: This is just Redwall. We're just reinventing Redwall with beavers.
LIZ: No, there's more than one beaver, because they've returned to England.
PAZ: You're writing Redwall fanfiction.
LIZ: I can make this an Arthurian beaver.
PAZ: Yeah, the beaver is Merlin.
JULIAN: Guinebeaver.
LIZ: Who's gonna play young hot BBC beaver Merlin?
JULIAN: Do you mean Beaverlin?
LIZ: Yes.
PAZ: You know, that might do it for us. I think we're-- [laughs].
LIZ: When we hit that 420 goal.
PAZ: Thanks everyone for listening to our podcast. You can find the show at Stairway to Star-- no, it's just, you can find the show @staircast on twitter.com. You can now support the show on Patreon at patreon.com/staircast. You can email questions or anecdotes or yell at us about talking about beavers too much, [email protected]. Um, next week we'll be reading chapters 11 through 14 of Forest of Secrets. I guess that's about it. So until next time, may StarClan light your path. Bye.
LIZ: Bye.
JULIAN: Bye.
[outro music]
LIZ: My God.
JULIAN: Oh.
LIZ: Hey, did you know beavertails are a kind of donut?
JULIAN: Oh, like a food?
LIZ: Yeah.
JULIAN: I was like, I thought you were talking about like a mathematical donut for some reason.
PAZ: Wow.
LIZ: That's me. I love to talk about math.
JULIAN: Like a torus. Anyway.

Hi! I saw that you are doing matchups! I've never done one before and decided to give it a try, so I'm sorry if I do anything incorrectly!
I would like a matchup for Death Note and/or BNHA. male matchups, please. Im 166cm (5’5), she/her pronouns
i wouldn’t say I'm the most talkative person. I’m rather introverted when it comes to talking to people, but I have a raging competitive side that comes out a lot that kind of pushes away the introversion?? If that makes sense? I’ve got a sense of humor (I call it the three d’s dirty/dark/dry). I've been told that I'm funny, so something must be working. I'm also pretty sarcastic which is both a blessing and a curse. I don’t have a very large friend group, but I get along with a lot of people. I have a bit of a hard time with emotions/feelings, so I've gotten pretty good at writing poetry as a way to emote.
You had mentioned hogwarts house, so— i'm a slytherin.
In relation to hobbies, I’m quite the book nerd. I have a large collection of books and I love talking about literature. I’ve always been fascinated by true crime as well. There have been many nights where I've pulled all-nighters watching crime documentaries and reading random wikipedia pages. I tend to get a bit carried away with research when I something find something i like (right now it's deep space and I have 7+ pages of notes on black holes). My biggest hobby is music. I've been involved with band, orchestra, and other ensembles and competitions. I’m classically trained on the flute/piccolo and piano, and i have taught myself guitar, bass, and ukulele. I’ve placed in top ensembles for years now and being involved in well-known ensembles among the band world has definitely been my greatest pride. I'm also a chess player because I'm a huge analyst (yeah, i was that kid who joined chess club in elementary).
Whenever it rains I stand on my back deck and watch the lightning/sky or the trees. I’ve always found a peaceful loneliness to rain, so standing in it is quite therapeutic and it’s where i think best. My mom has found me on the deck at 5am because I woke up (or was already awake because my sleep schedule is trash) and went outside.
I tend to gravitate toward more neutral/muted tones of clothing my style is a bit of everything, but i tend to just wear sweats and hoodies
Anyway, I hope I did this correctly and have a nice day/night! Thank you! :)
____________________________________________________________________________________ I hope you like your matchups lovely! Also, if you ever need someone to talk to about books, just DM me! I love talking books!
Death Note Matchup: I pair you with… L Lawliet!
Tumblr media
L isn’t the most talkative person himself, so it isn’t unusual to find the both of you sitting in silence doing your respective hobbies: you reading and him working on whatever case he happens to be working on. Although your sense of humor keeps things light and amuses him, he has a bit of a dark and dry sense of humor himself. Also, he would definitely be a Slytherin! So that means… SLYTHERIN POWER COUPLE! He loves to read and absorb any new information that he can so book dates are a commonality between the two of you. He’s more into true crime books (and solves them before the climax of the story every time) so if you have any good recommendations then I’d say give them to him! He appreciates your love for music, he’s more into classical himself and loves to listen to you play. He also loves to play chess with you! It’s common to find him standing in the rain when it’s raining outside, it’s calming for him and helps him clear his head. So for dates, you could honestly go out and stand or dance in the rain! He’s a bit awkward when dancing but I’m sure he’d try just for you! My Hero Academia Matchup: I pair you with… Shinsou Hitoshi!
Tumblr media
Another boy who isn’t the most talkative. He’s a rather introverted Ravenclaw (yes I think he’s a Ravenclaw, sue me). He likes your competitive side though! The two of you have mini competitions all the time over little and silly things. He likes your sense of humor, he has a bit of a dry and sarcastic sense of humor himself and loves your sarcasm. He loves your musicality! He loves to listen to you play and I HC him as knowing the piano so the two of you can do duets! He also likes to read a bit (not as much as you I’m sure) so reading dates are a big thing between the two of you! He will also 100% lend you his hoodies. He loves to see you wear his clothing and he’s most likely bigger than you which means his hoodies drown you which he also loves!

Welcome to the Neighborhood pt. 2
Note: ok so I know that not all of the boys, meaning both twins, live with the others. And I know my update schedule sucks but I go in a block and funk. Sorry guys. I just want you to read something I would read and truly enjoy. Also, I think I may make this a Haz fic bc ones about hin deserves more love and notes.
No one really reads these but I also think I'll write this for Harrison bc when Tom posted the pic of Nadia, it shattered the illusion in my head lol and it feels weird to a certain extent to write when he is most likely dating her. Don't get me wrong, I'm so happy for him and he doesn't know I exist, but it feels odd idk. So im pausing on Tom stuff atm lol. Harrison is single as far as publicly that ik so thats that 😅
Pairing: Harrison x Reader (most likely)
Warnings: mentions of weed, alcohol, and swearing. I enjoy all these things responsibly and ik im not the only one. As always stop reading if you dont like something.
Part 1 here initial teaser here (got around 100 notes soo 😎 check that out)
°•○•°○°•○•°○°•○•°
“Alrighty boys. That’s enough about me, tell me about yourselves. I only know this one from the big screen and that 2 of you are brothers.” You gestured to Tom as you spoke about him. “And from basic eavesdropping I gather you are all very close.”
Tom smiled, “Actually I’m a brother to the twins, older obviously.” It was fun having a celeb lounging in your hot tub, drinking a beer with you. “But yeah I am an actor, Spider-Man as you probably know. Harrison’s an actor too!”
“Oh my god you are! I watched Catch-22 on Hulu! Comedy my ass..! I balled my eyes out several times.” He had the nerve to laugh in response. “Don’t laugh! That shit got intense quick. Then the shot where you all are swimming? Killed me. I don't know how I didn't notice you. Sorry!”
“Did you at least like it?” He smiled and asked hopefully. When you nodded yes he beamed! “Well then that’s all that matters. I will say an American accent is hard.”
You brought your beer up to your lips. “Yeah because your guys’ accent is so easy. You make fun of how different areas in America have different accents but it’s the same here!” They nodded in agreement at your words. You leaned your head back a tad and enjoyed the warm water. “Southern accents have different twangs bepending on the area, I have family that lives closer to New England, that's something all in its own. Just like here. You got London, Wales, some place called Essex and other places more north of here. It's not just the US." You reached over for your joint to finish it amongst the bubbles. "Now for real. Tell me about yourselves. Harrison you start I guess."
"Why me?"
"Shorter wikipedia page." You smirk as you re-lit your herb. The guys laughed and made 'ooh' noises to tease. "I'm kidding! Relax a touch. I just picked your name because you are right in front of me."
"Well I've known this lot since we were all kids. Tom and I went to school together and we have been stuck with each other since. I was his personal assistant for a while too." You listened as he spoke. Sweat was building up on his face from the hot tub. It added a nice shine to his, and everyone's faces. In order to avoid makeup running everywhere you sat up as you listened to him. You watched his eyes watch your movements as you took a hit and slowly exhaled. Almost like he was relaxing from watching someone relax from getting high without actually doing so. He kept going and you realized you zoned out a tad. "And then I wanted to do more than just model so I did more auditions and Catch-22 became my biggest so far."
You nodded, noting you heard and were listening. "That's cool and all but tell me like favorite song, movie, animal! Hahaha it isn't everyday famous people are in my hot tub. I'm going to savor this first encounter!" He smiled and answered your sort of questions. You offered the joint around before it finished. Tom passed, Tuwaine and Harrison took quick hits though. "But yeah that is me. Now someone else go so I don't have the spot light on me anymore." He looked at you as he said that and handed you the last bit. You winked in thanks, and to flirt lightly. (Shoot your shot right?) "Same questions to you love."
You responded your favorite song, movie, and color to him. "Yeah I like a bit of everything. But funny movies are my favorite. Obviously I like Marvel too Tom don't worry. Same goes for music but my preference ranges from new pop to older rock. I grew up on 80s alternative pop stuff." You smiled at him and he beamed in pride at the brand he represented. "Ok Sam you now."
Sam starts talking about his life and Harrison goes to grab more drinks. At this point the sun as almost finished setting and you tell the blonde how to turn the deck lights on. Soon the rows of edison bulbs flick on and a lovely mood is set. The glow isn't too bright and adds a nice light to your summer tanned skin. What you don't know is that the gentlemen appreciated the glow as well. However, they are too polite to say anything too bold after just meeting you.
If you could read minds or be sober enough to detect a certain lack of subtlety you would pick up on how the single men checked you out as you got out of the tub to get rid of the roach. Polite of course, 20 something men are going to appreciate a beautiful American girl right in front of them.
And if they could read your mind they would hear how you were taking in Tom and Harrison's jaw lines and toned muscles. How you appreciated Tuwaine's smile and height. Then add the twin's curls and freckles to the list and they'd think you were picking them like boys from a catalogue. Despite the slight oggling on your part, your eyes always wandered back to the blonde hair blue eyed boy the most. He seemed a little more laid back then Tom. Probably just because one was working more than the other, but that was just initial vibes you got. Regardless of vain appearance choices and vibe preference, all these boys were wonderful and you were just lucky enough your uncle's hot tub fit them all nicely.
Tuwaine smiled cheekily and spoke up. "Alright, we all have fresh drinks and proper buzzes. Let's make it fun and play a game. So Y/N, you went to college in the states, give us a classic drinking game and show us what you got."
"Ha! I don't know what you're looking for but I assume never have I ever is universal? You can't play kings or flip cup in a hit tub. Hold up 5 fingers, put them down if you've done said thing, drink as well."
"No fingers, just play till we are right pissed." Harry grinned and everyone else went along with it. "I will start. Never have I ever- wait this a normal game or sexy version?"
You said you didn't care and Tom said what the hell, so he continued. "Never have I ever gotten walked in on during a scandelous activity." Tom and Harrison both drank and groaned saying they have both walked in on each other at some point in life. Tuwaine continued.
"Never have I ever fooled around while someone else is in the room." There was a pause and no one drank. But then you rose your beer to your lips and they all looked at you in a manner of surprise and demand for explination.
Shrugging you said, "Old drunken hookup in school. We didn't know his roommate was in his top bunk asleep until it was too late. The mistake we made was keeping on going when we thought we heard him, because we did..."
"Wow Y/N. Learning a lot about the neighbor girl right away!"
"Shut up this game was your idea!" You laughed as you spoke in response to his teasing. "But whatever it's my turn now anyway. Never have I ever sent a dirty text to the wrong person." That got all but Harrison and you felt proud for getting them. "Alright so you are either morons or were in a rush to send that sext."
Tom defended himself saying her name was Sam and it was instant regret the second he realized.
Sam glared at him and said, "Yeah no one enjoyed that bro. I'm still shaken up about it."
"Get over yourself it was like 5 years ago! And you accidentally sent your friend Jake one, so pot, kettle, hi both black."
"It was detailed!"
You just sat there amused taking this all in. "I am so glad this happened tonight." You said more to yourself than them.
"Darling if this ends up in the tabloids we will never speak again." They were teasing with the threat. "But come on this is good let's keep going. Never have I ever done it in a car." You, Sam, and Tuwaine all drank and giggled.
The game continued on and another round of drinks were had. You learned Tuwaine had said the wrong name in bed. Also, that both Harry and Harrison have fooled around during family functions. In return they learned that you've hooked up in a college classroom and in a restaurant bathroom. That ended up getting you and your former boyfriend kicked out of the establishment. Towards the final round all were getting sleepier but still in a good mood.
"Never have I ever had sex high." Harrison challenged the group. No one drank. "Wait really? Thought I'd get you with that. Finish your beer and all." He looked at you as he spoke.
"Nope. Just never happened now that I've thought about it. Huh. You'd think right? But nope. Not that I'm opposed." You ended your statement by glancing his way while finishing your beer anyway. Harrison just watched the way your neck moved as you tilted your head back. "Ok boys this was fun but I am gettin tired."
Tom nodded. "Same here. Thank you for having us darling, it was fun!" The others spoke in agreement and you smiled at them saying they were welcomed back anytime. They offered to help clean but you grabbed the remaining bottles and told them you were good. After final goodbyes, you told them to not he strangers, you were all in your respective homes.
You went to bed pretty quick. Next door, at their place Tom, Harrison, and Sam lingered to get some water before bed. "She was really cool." Sam said while sipping water.
Harrison hummed in agreement. "Yeah I think so too. Very chill and all that."
Sam smirked and playfully said, "You just think she's fit mate." There was a pause.
"Well she is." It was Tom who said that and the others looked at him in playful shock. "What I'm not blind! She is! She's isn't some shy girl freaking out over us. She's cheeky and just seems normal about us living next to her. More Harrison's type though I'd say."
Sam laughed. "Yeah he always liked the classic American 'girl next door' type. Just a bonus she is actually American this time." They paused for Harrison to negate their statements but he just sipped his water and looked at them with a glint in his eyes. "Told you." Sam said as he took a sip. "She is better than half the models either of you bring back. Nuerons fire and she can keep a conversation. Not that all models are like that! But come on you went out with some stereotypes." Neither could disagree. Sometimes you just want to have a date with the beautiful face. Long term needs substance though, and both Tom and Harrison thought you had it all.
"We need to invite her over tomorrow, and any time she's free." Groundwork was to be established and Harrison was determined to get to know you more.

Survey #358
“i know the pieces fit, ‘cuz i watched them fall away”
Would you ever own a Great Dane as a pet? Oh Lord, my mom wants one so bad. She looooves big dogs. I wouldn't, though. I don't want another dog, period. What was or is your favorite quality about your recent ex? Her resilience, strength, creativity, loyalty, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. lol. Have you ever witnessed a human being giving birth in real life? No, and I NEVER fucking will. What about an animal? Yeah, cats. What kind of things do you enjoy reading about on sites like Wikipedia? I sometimes do that for straightening out game plots after watching a let's play if I have remaining questions. Wikipedia tends to do well with compressing it. Which country’s cuisine that you haven’t tried, would you be interested in sampling? (e.g. Moroccan, Thai etc.) I wouldn't know because I'm not educated enough on foreign cuisines. What’s the last movie you watched on your own? The Shining, I think, forever ago. Fried, poached, boiled or scrambled eggs? Scrambled. Have you ever got into a club, whilst being underage? I've never tried. Are you happy with your relationship with God, or do you want more from it? I don't have one. Do you struggle with boredom? Very, very severely. I have absolutely awful anhedonia; I'm pretty much constantly bored. Literally. I just... find things to pass the time, even if I'm not really enjoying myself. What famous person do you wish you could be friends with? I'm going to assume here you don't mean a significant other, because uh... y'all been known lmaooo. I would really love to be friends with Gab Smolders (I know that's not her real name, just using her YT name), because we have very similar interests. As well, Suzie Hanson is a fucking SWEETHEART. I miss her channel. :( At some point I want to purchase some stuff from her store to support the darling. Man, thinking of this question, there's really a lot. What would you do if you were famous? Hate it, haha. Do you wish you hair were shorter or longer? It's at a fine length right now. What photo editing website or software do you use? Lightroom and Photoshop. What hair color looks best on you and what’s your natural color? I think my hair looked best black. It's naturally brown. What is your favorite show to watch? Meerkat Manor. It is so, so comforting to me. Are your maternal/parental instincts strong? Not with kids, oddly enough. I've only ever really encountered strong protective instincts with significant others like when they're sick or something like that. In school, do you/did you work better by yourself or in a group? I absolutely worked better alone. I hated group work. Do you know anyone who has a collection of old records? My mom did, once upon a time. I feel like I know someone who does now... but idk. Do you go on any forums often? Just RP ones. Would you ever agree to an open relationship with someone? Nnnnope. Do people always say you’re too thin? Uh, I have the opposite problem. Could you design a whole web page yourself? Not from scratch, no. I've only done so on free sites that give you the bare bones and easy editing. Have you ever cooked an entire dinner for your family? Definitely not. Do you prefer piano music or violin music? Ohhhh, both are beautiful, but I have to say violin. Who do you tend to get in fights with the most? My mom, I guess, not that we fight a lot. Are you attracted to spooky and macabre things naturally? YEP. Have you ever bobbed for apples? Were you successful? No. It's disgusting if you're going after others, and besides, I HATE water up my nose and have never quite figured out how to block it out without plugging it. Hypothetically speaking, if you had a child [too young to make their own decisions], what would you dress him/her up as for Halloween? It would depend on what their interests were. Do you intend to take your children trick-or-treating, if ever you have any? I'm not having kids, but if I did, I definitely would if they wanted to go. What is the coolest jack-o-lantern you have ever seen? Now THAT'S hard, I really don't know. What was your favorite candy to get from trick-or-treating? What about your least favorite? Reese's was my favorite, and I never liked Tootsie Rolls. Did you ever receive anything that wasn’t candy? Maybe? I feel like I have... Have you ever carved a really extensive pumpkin, or were they always simple carvings? Yes; I once carved a pumpkin with a raven design with "and quoth the raven, 'nevermore'" written into the back. The raven wasn't just a flat cut-out, but rather carved in layers so the light came through differently at certain depths. Are you more interested in cute, funny, “sexy”, or scary costumes? For myself, absolutely the scary ones. In general though, I'm not gonna BS ya, I love me some sexy costumes, haha, but also still scary and particularly gory ones. Have you ever intimidated or made another person feel legitimately threatened? If not, do you think that you could ever be seen as scary? I seriously hate admitting this, but Mom has confessed that my yelling has scared her before when scolding our former dog that I fucking hated. In what ways do you or would you need to be validated by a partner? (For example, liking your posts/talking about you on social media, or perhaps by doting on your with gifts.) I absolutely need words of affirmation. I just need to hear a lot that you do still like/love me. Also, if you're unwilling to actually act like we're a couple in front of ANYONE, like you're ashamed of me or something, byyyyeeee. Do you tend to succeed by weaning yourself off of something or by quitting cold turkey? It depends, I guess. Is there a specific type of pet breed/size/etc. that you don’t want? Why not? Any that have underlying medical issues, like pugs, spider ball pythons, Persian cats, etc. etc... It's just a moral thing; I don't want to support the deliberate continuation of poor genes in animals for human monetary gain. It's just wrong to me. Away from breeds, I also don't really want free-roaming animals after my cat passes, because I don't want to endanger the reptiles and invertebrates I want as pets in the future. Have you ever lived in a notoriously dangerous area? If not, would it bother you to do so? I grew up in one, yes. I never want to again. Has a friend’s significant other ever interfered with or damaged your friendship? What about a significant other of yours damaging a friendship? No. What, if anything, is something that you put pressure on yourself about? What do you imagine would happen if you did not live up to this expectation? Getting a job nowadays. I do NOT want to imagine what my life will be like if I never find employment. If you have been in a serious relationship, have you and your partner ever discussed lifetime plans that clashed? Did you reconcile them or did you break up? If you have not been in a relationship, what are some issues that would be deal-breakers? This hasn't happened, no. If you were offered to smoke some weed right now would you accept? Honestly, I want to try weed to see if it would help my anxiety, BUT I'm unwilling to ever smoke something, so no. Have you ever changed clothes in a vehicle? Yeah. Do you listen to country music? No. Have you ever had a boyfriend your parents didn’t like? No. Were you ever a trouble maker? Not really, no. Do you shave your legs? Hell, that's debatable by this point. I haven't since this past October, but I *would* if for whatever reason someone might see my legs. I am not overexaggerating when I say I naturally have men's legs as far as hair goes, oof. Do you have any person in your family with an addiction to beer? That's what my dad always drank when he was an alcoholic. He doesn't touch alcohol now. Have you ever gotten sloppy drunk at a party? No. Have you ever slept naked? Accidentally. Could you ever be friends with the person who hurt you most in life? I really don't think I could be. Do you actually like going to school? I never did. Have you ever really been in a “complicated relationship”? How did that work out? In your opinion, what makes a relationship “complicated”? No. I don't care enough to go into what a complicated relationship means, I think it's pretty obvious. Who was the first person you’ve ever fallen in love with? Is this a person you’re still in contact with? How do you know you’re in love with someone? Jason, and no. And you just... know. It's a wordless feeling . Have you ever successfully broken a bad habit? How about conquered a fear of something? Uhhhh I don't know, really. Well, I used to be AWFUL at picking my eyebrows, particularly when anxious, but I have gotten better at that. I still kinda do it, though. Onto the next question, I don't believe I've "conquered" a fear, but rather they just faded with time on their own. Have you ever read a whole series of books? Yeah. Are you going to walk at your graduation or just pick your diploma up? I walked. Do you own a pair of brass knuckles? No. Have you ever tried to break a Guinness World Record? No. Can you sing your ABC’s backwards? I can't. Do you like Skittles? I love Skittles. Do you know how to read music? I used to. Who would you say has made the biggest impact on your life? Really, Jason. He ultimately led to me getting proper treatment for my depression, which changed my life. I'm in no way giving him credit for it, but you get what I mean. You can only listen to THREE CDs for the rest of your life. What are they? Black Rain and Ozzmosis by Ozzy Osbourne, and uhhh... perhaps The Black Album by Metallica. Do you own any shirts that have a year on it? Yeah, but it's way too small for me now. It's from Back To The Future, when we actually reached the date in the movie. Have you ever done another person’s make-up? Ha, I gave Jason a makeover once. Honestly, do you double dip? Not if I'm sharing the dip with other people. Who were you last on an elevator with? My mom. Do you know anyone that has a black belt in karate? Not to my knowledge. How often do you wear hats? Never. Who is the youngest gay person you know? *shrug* Have you ever watched an animal being eaten by another animal? I've seen cats eat mice and stuff as a kid. What is the strangest, most “out there” thing you believe? Some people I'm sure would consider the fact I believe the government was involved in 9/11 as "out there," but when you look into it, it's far from "out there." Do you get along with people who are especially religious? Why/why not? It depends on how they act about it, not what they keep in their head. Now if they have just purely hateful beliefs that demonize another's existence, then no, we can't get along. Have you ever drawn or painted a self-portrait? Painted, yes, for an art class. Do you have any interesting pillow cases? No. Are you more afraid of spiders or bees? Bees, generally. Especially if we're talking things like wasps, who are just demon spawns. Would you rather donate time, blood, or money? That's a really hard question, but I guess time? Like I'm thinking volunteer work and stuff, or listening to and comforting someone. Can grills be sexy on a guy? They're sexy on absolutely no one. Last strong smell you can remember smelling? Ugh, gasoline. This one car in front of my mom and me smelled awful. Last healthy thing you ate? Apples. Do you know anybody who was abused? Emotionally, yes. Do your parents volunteer anywhere? No. Do you have a steering wheel cover? Mom's car doesn't. What do you think of when you see sharp knives? This is really morbid, but I will immediately envision what it would be like to be stabbed. I'm very afraid of knives. The highway and back roads take you to the same place; choose your route. The back roads, of course. And let me bring my camera.

French Musical Recommendations/review (Part 2)
I should have mentioned in part 1 but I don't speak French (well a bit but not enough to understand the lyrics unless I’m reading it or something) so if the lyrics aren’t that good my bad I honestly wouldn’t know,
Also this is in no particular order, I don't think all the shows mentioned in part 1 are better than the ones mentioned here, there will be a part 3 at some point
1789 Les amantes de la Bastille: I think this may be my second or third (ties with Mozart) favourite French musical based solely on soundtrack, it’s about the siege of the Bastille and the days leading up to it with a focus on two lovers Ronan a revolutionary and Olympe Marie Antoinette’s children’s governess (the actress who played Olympe was also Guinevere in roi Arthur musical), my favourite songs are “Sur ma peau” and “La rue nous apparent” it is available in full on YouTube, IMPORTANT: This show has two endings, I don’t want to spoil so perhaps skip what I’m about to write though I will try to be vague: the scene before the song “fixe” at the end, the two characters switch place mattering on which version your watching, one version was done towards the start of the run and late 2013 they seemed to have made the change, the full version uploaded and the dvd have the original ending (I personally prefer the original but the other is not bad as well). also in 2012 when the show was staring with the showcase costumes are really different and you’ll find Ronan is played by Matthieu Carnot who plays Lazare in the full production later on instead because he had vocal issues resulting in getting replaced and given a more minor role (I think he’s great in his new role though, “Maniaque” is a bop)
Non-music: I have yet to see it in full but from clips the lighting is great and really adds to the songs and emotions, the story is pretty straightforward but nice, and the choreography is good from what I’ve seen, also for a “historical” show the costumes aren’t that bad, I would assume not accurate but a good balance of inaccurate and historical looking enough
Japanese Toho ver. (1789 バスティーユの恋人たち) 2016 clips are available on YouTube, the costumes in this version is fun, it’s non-replica but they really went off on Olympe’s costume, I will be honest a little bit sad about Ronan’s yellow jacket being replaced with a dark blue, also one of the Ronan actors (Olympe, Ronan and Marie-Antoinette are double casted) looks too old, especially compared to other Ronan actor who really has the young energetic vibe about him (though if memory serves me correctly his sur ma peau was strangely annoying to listen to)
Takarazuka ver. 2015, clips are available on YouTube if Japanese title along with “宝塚“ is added in search
Tumblr media
Notre-Dame de Paris: a musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name, it is different from the Disney musical, this is another popular French show, if you like Romeo et Juliette you’ll probably like this, it can found in full on YouTube along with different translations/adaptions, I won’t go to in depth on different version on here like I did for R+J but if your interested the Wikipedia page is quite detailed and can tell you about all the casts and cast recording available, I have yet to watch it in full but so far I think Belle and Le temps des cathédrales are my favourite songs (quite basic I know), it’s one of those shows you can’t go wrong with, from the parts I’ve watched and listened I think it could become one of my favourite shows
Non music: From the bits I’ve seen the wall backdrop is really cool, It has nooks and platforms that appear and disappear and it’s just really cool looking, WARNING, this is a bit of the spoiler so maybe don't read what I’m about to write but if you’ve read the book its not that much of a spoiler but there is a hanging scene at the end so if that imagery is something your sensitive to please be wary, it’s at the end (on the YouTube video of the full original show its from 2:03:42-2:03:54)
Tumblr media
Don Juan: I love this show (I strangely found parts funny and a bit cheesy which is why I liked it), It’s pretty much about a man Don Juan who is a know heartbreaker who is only into sex drinking and having fun but no love, he then falls in love with a woman, shocker, and conflicts arise from there, honestly I don’t see a lot of content for this show but I think it’s fun, the dancing is primarily flamenco (music is heavily inspired by the dance as well) and it’s impressive, the singing is great, the full show is available on YouTube, my favourite songs are probably “Les fleurs du mal” and “Jalousie,”  It opened in Montreal originally then went to Paris, the full show is available on YouTube (I think the Paris version) and there is also a full 3 and half hour behind the scenes video of the Paris production online, from what I can tell up till the symphony version of 2019 Don Juan and his love Maria has been consistently played by Jean-François Breau and Marie-Ève Janvier (obviously there were understudies and such) the actors are also married/were dating during the show which adds to it when you see them perform together
Non-Music: a character described with black hair in the song chorus is blonde/brunette and I thought that was hilarious, some strange choreography with Don Juan especially in Jalousie, he walks up and down stage and it’s awkward, aside from weird parts in general the costumes are ok (gets better in later productions), the set is plain but with some fun props, I think the dancing is probably one of the highlights along with the live band present on stage for certain songs (photo from Quebec 2013 production)
Don Juan (Théâtre St-Denis) 2004 Montreal, also had Canada tour after its Montreal premier in Feb.
France Tour 2005 Palais des Congrès à Paris performance recording and behind the scenes is available on YouTube
Korean Tour 2006, the French cast touring, non-costume concert versions and actual performance clips are available on Youtube
Korean Cast, 2009 (March~) (뮤지컬 돈 주앙) separate from the tour which was the French cast touring this is an all Korean cast, act 1 and 2 can be found on YouTube (video called “돈쥬앙 1막“ and “돈쥬앙 2막“) though it seems to cut around so It’s like a pieced together version of the acts, other clips are also available, it is a replica production
2012 revival Montreal, from what I read it only had 10 performances? and with it released a cd with new recordings, “nous on veut de l'amour“ and “L'amour Est Plus Fort“
Grand Théâtre de Québec 2013 (August 9-18), you could call this a continuation to the revival in Montreal
Takarazuka ver. 2016 (June+July) (ドン・ジュアン) the page is still up on the takarazuka website for this production, there’s a ad with clips from the show available on niconico (should come up if you search the title in jp and add takarazuka in jp) also this version Don Juan is strangely more touchy with his friend, not mad guess it adds a new tension to the plot, non replica production though it is quite similar to the French one, they don’t stray too far
Don Juan Symphonique 2019 (Feb 12-16): At the Montreal Symphony House they had a concert version with the original cast (or at least the original Don Juan and Maria), along with the OSM (Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal)
Japanese ver. 2019 (August/September + December) it’s non-replica, there’s a trailer for it online but it only features Don Juan, I found blog posts about it but currently while I write this it’s late so perhaps I’ll update with more info later, maybe not
Moscow Concert 2020 (March 17-22) (Дон Жуан or Don Juan) This is still in French with a French cast but this time the leads are no longer the original, Laurent Ban is now Don Juan, supposedly according to a Russian video it was meant to go on tour after Moscow (State Kremlin Palace) but I’m assuming the issue with the virus changed plans, I’m surprised they were going to go on world tour I honestly think it’s not true, the interview with cast can be found on YouTube with bits of songs, however the Russian concert advertisement is only a recording from the 2005 French, from what I can tell it is a replica, I believe it was cancelled before the premier due to Covid-19
The research for this show took me all day, maybe if I was fluent in French it would have been faster, if I’m wrong in parts feel free to comment and correct me and I’ll edit it
Tumblr media
Les Trois Mousquetaires: Not to be mistaken with the Broadway/Westend show of the same name and base material from 1928 with the revival in the 80′s or the other three musketeer musical at the North Shore theatre in 2007 (the one with Aaron Tveit and Kevyn Morrow), or the other musical by George Stiles and Paul Leigh, this is an entirely separate 2016-2017 musical that follows the general plot of the literature it’s based on though simplified, it’s ok, not great but not the worst, I probably would rank it lower than roi Arthur, I will admit I haven’t listened to the full show, it’s quite catchy, my favourite song so far is probably “Je t’aime c’est tout,” there is a showcase concert in full, music videos and official soundtracks available on YouTube but I would advise checking out the live versions, the ensemble backing parts are really great and they get cut out in the recording versions which really cheapens the songs for me, In general ok show, really not the best but has its highlights (like the four lads relationship is fun to watch, dancing is great, singing is good),
Non-Music: Athos the oldest of the 3 musketeers is actually the youngest actor though he is a few year older than the D’Artagnan actor, It’s minor I guess but I didn’t realise who Athos was until looking up the cast list and was shocked, Also Athos really doesn’t sing because Brahim Zaibat who plays him is a dancer, despite this his dancing skills really add to the fight sequences making them very impressive and fun to watch, it’s more concerty in style and a bit interactive with the audience, from what I can tell the sets seem plain and the costumes are really awful (in my opinion) like Athos’ shirt is so revealing to the point he might as well not wear a shirt, also Constance’s outfit is just a no for me

11, 15, 17 and 18 please 😊
11. Kid fic or childhood friends?
Childhood friends 11 times out of 10. I’m not big on kids, I don’t know how to write them and don’t particularly enjoy reading about them. Childhood friends, on the other hand, with all the potential for mutual pining and being idiots together and reading each others minds and still not getting it? I live for that shit.
15. Post the last line you wrote without context.
“And keep the door open – I’ll be right there in the corridor making a call, so no funny business.”
17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.
Rino being an ass to Monto during their shared time in Meelan was not club politics -- well, not completely -- it was also Rino being a pig-tail pulling, fork-wielding bully who didn’t know how to act on an attraction that shouldn’t have been there. And by then time he got his shit together, it was far too late. (Why yes I torture myself with ideas like this. Not promising it’ll ever get written.)
18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?
Reading, not really. I often read in bed before going to sleep or while I’m on the bus/train, getting my nails done, waiting for a bread dough to rise... So basically I read to kill time. It’s actually quite unusual these days for me to set aside a longer period just for reading. Also, I usually read from my phone, even though I also own a Kindle that’d be much more comfortable option in so many ways.
For writing, ideally I want to set aside a whole day -- or at least a few hours -- to get in the right headspace. I wanna eat something beforehand, because once I get into writing, I tend to forget stuff like eating or drinking or sleeping. Because of that, I also want to have some water/tea close at hand. I always have a couple of online dictionaries and a thesaurus open in tabs, as well as some other reference materials, be it a wikipedia page or some other site. I also always listen to music while I write, and I often create a story-specific playlist when working on a longer fic. And when it comes to actual writing, I tend to write the scenes in the order where I want them to appear in the story -- though lately I’ve been trying to break out of that cycle, and I must say it’s very liberating to write the scenes as they come to you without worrying about how to connect them! I might be crying once I start editing it, but that’s tomorrow’s Milla’s problem.

Me, rewatching some 03 season one
Sees the scene where everyone kinda faces off against the five elements
Me: 👀 time to theorise and see what 03 might have (un)intentionally assigned an element to each turt and rat
Anyways this is just me rambling past midnight, I’m not the best at character analysis so I’m super open to other people’s thoughts and interpretations.
Anyways so if we go by
Turts/rat as the element that would destroy the opposing elemental guardian they are facing off with:
Raph is earth
Leo is metal
Mikey is fire
Donnie is water
And splinter is air/wood
I say air/wood because, while the og five element grid has no air, the cartoon added in air so uhh,
Also I mean splinter said sth like “I will quell the air” so hm that works out
Anyways, if we take a look at this gird/chart that google so helpfully decided to give me about wuxing, or also known as the five elements
Tumblr media
It’s very interesting to see the relationships between each elements. While it isn’t 100% accurate to the tmnt dynamic, it makes for some interesting explorations. One element is a foil for another, but can also create a different element.
Also since raph is earth and leo is metal it’s fun seeing the “earth creates metal” because in a way, raph is one of leo’s, if not his biggest, supporters.
Also the fact that they have elements that INSULT another is hilarious when thinking about the characters
Anyways, going to wikipedia, you can read that these elements can be used as phases to describe the state in nature
Wood is spring. It’s a period of growth and vitality. Splinter is their teacher and father, being the roots of the family. He was the one to nurture the boys and train them.
Fire is summer. It’s a time of flowering and it’s filled with energy. Mikey, that’s mikey. Mikey is often known as a ninja who is brimming with energy, but also potential. He’s very much just flowering.
Earth, interestingly enough, doesn’t get ur typical season. It’s an inbetween period, or maybe a sort of extension of summer. It’s accociated with leveling and fruition. Raph is quite a steady force for his brothers. But I’ll get back on that in a bit
Metal is autumn. A period of harvest and collecting. Leo’s usually the one to harvest new skills in battle or ninjitsu. His plans can be seen as a way that they harvest a victory.
And finally water is winter. It’s a still time of storage and retreat, like tides coming back into the ocean I guess. Basically it’s bringing room for the cycle to start again. Donnie in 03 has been stated to provide a lot of stability and calm, as shown in that one episode COUGHSAINWCOUGH.
Each element also gets a north south east west connection EXCEPT earth. Earth gets, once again, the middle ground.
Tumblr media
Moving on to the medical side!
So yeah these five elements also were connected to chinese medicine, specifically, ORGANS!
Wiki gave me this very intricate graph but here’s sth more easier to digest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a lot going on, but judging from the wiki page each element corresponds to multiple aspects. Planet, mental qualities, emotions. There’s a yin and yang organ and body parts and fluids, taste and smell, as well as time and life. They really went ham, which, props to them.
I like how the emotion part has a negative and positive.
I can see why people might swap raph and mikey’s elements around. Heck, I do it too. Especailly looking at the medical side of the five elements. Raph seems more like a passion and hate and resolve guy and mikey seems to be more agreeable and joyful. But to be honest? They do kinda fit the elements that 03 might have given them. Mikey does have the capacity to be bitter and tough and raph DEFINATELY has the capacity to be sweet and honest. Also, as I said, these are not 100% what the tmnt are, just a fun link to them. Also it’s funny how Splinter, a Rat, got the scaly animal
Anyways, the wiki article offers lots more info, like martial arts and music
I’d like to focus on the martial arts side for a moment
This is mentioned in the first image as well, with water being drilling and metal being splitting. Honestly? It’s pretty similar to the tmnt characters
Tumblr media
You might say again, “hey! Raph’s more like fire and mikey more like earth though, right?” Nah, you see mikey with those nunchucks? Sais arent exactly as explosive as a stinging attack from a flying wooden stick with metal chains.
Ahem, anyways
I really feel like mikey and raph are very two close elements (in their own way. Each of the brothers has a fun dynamic with each other). Even in the show (with what I’ve rewatched so far) mikey and raph provide a lot of tension and relief for each other. Especially mikey for raph. So in terms of the elements, mikey and raph are very,, interrwined? They both have a very outward appearance and first layer that makes u think, “well, they’d really match with this element” but but but, they also work well the other way around
Mikey is VERY energetic and explosive. He’s impulsive in his own way and burns bright with just this bright energy. Raph, while known as a hothead, is very much a pillar to his family. More often than not you’ll see raph backing up his brothers, defending them when they’re down. You’ll see him supporting his brothers off the battlefield as well, a steady force.
Anyways I cannot think of anything else to say rn so I’ll end it here

What I played this month: October 2020, Part 2/2
Part 1
GIF by me (except for The Evil Within 2, I was to lazy...)
They bleed pixels, 2012, developed and published by Spooky Squid Games Inc, ~10 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A young girl picks up a haunted book, becomes purple while swords replace her hands and she is now on a quest to kill the force of evil… I mean that's one of the best resumes I've seen for some time. The game is a hack and slash and platformer. As per the resume, the ambiance is really special, with the aesthetic and music. However this game isn’t for everyone, it’s definitely for more experienced players and even then you might still have issues finishing the game. The original difficulty of the game would be the equivalent of a difficult to very difficult scale. From what I saw this causes a lot of trouble for some players and the dev added an easy level, which is, for me, way too easy. So here I was stuck between almost no challenge, or stuck with levels that sometimes almost made me gauge my eyes out. For me, the main problem of the game is the platform part. You control a character that goes very fast, through levels that require precision and carefulness. You have three lives, but let’s be honest, you either die by falling in a pit, in which case, the three lives don’t matters, or you get hit by an enemy, which throws the character off in a nearby saw, which throw her right back at the ennemy, who hit her again, and bam your dead.
I honestly didn’t have the patience to finish the game. I honestly recommend you watch a playthrough or try a demo of the game before buying it.
Detention, 2017, developed and published by RedCandleGames, ~12 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This game was a nice surprise! I bought it because I liked the artstyle, and I noped out of it back when I first started it because I didn’t realize it was a horror game. But just for this month, I started again, and I’m really happy I did! The story takes place in Taiwan during the white period. You control two students, Wei and Rin who are stuck, alone, in their high school during a storm, but not everything is as it seems. Soon enough Rin will wake up and find Wei dead, and in the middle of a dilapidated school occupied by evil spirits. The game is a point and click, you go forward solving puzzles. The puzzles are well organized, as is the level design, you will never find yourself lost for 20 minutes wondering where you need to go. The story is very interesting, but it takes some time to understand where the game is taking you. I would say you start to understand what happened half-way through (the game is 3 hours long). I would also recommend replaying the game or watching a playthrough after you finished it to really get the full extent of it. The horror in the game falls on the presence of the evil spirits and the fact that you don’t know what is happening, but once you start to understand, the horror feeling kind of disappears from the game, around the last hour, but I think this was wanted by the developers. What I really like about this game is that it shows you the real horrors of life are the ones that happen around us and who are perpetrated by other humans, and not the ones created by a common imaginary. I really recommend this game, but I think you should read a bit on the historical context before (you can find the info on the wikipedia page of the game!)
Speed dating for ghosts, 2018, developed and published by Copychaser Games, ~6 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a dating sim but with ghosts! I really enjoyed this game, you essentially speed date ghosts. Each of them has a really different story, a different way that they react to their death, and their new life as ghosts. Some stories are funny or hopeful, others are heart wrenching. There is also a dog ghost that you can pet! Which is one of the best arguments in favor of you playing this game! There is nothing to say more about it, just go and play it!
Sagebrush, 2018, developed and published by Redact Games, ~6 euros:
Tumblr media
It’s a short point and click game. The game takes place in an abandoned small village who harbored a cult. You will be able to visit the common areas, the church, the cult leader home… in order to discover what happened in this place, how these people got enrolled in the cult and how they all died, how was their day to day life,.... The gameplay is really simple, it’s just a point and click, the puzzles are also really simple. But it doesn’t really matter as I feel like the main subject of the game is first and foremost the story, explaining how a cult works, how it indoctrinates people and how it can lead them to do things most people would never do while in their right mind. For me the game addressed the subject well, going right to the point and showing how a cult can slowly but surely, go into more and more extremist views, without necessarily condemning the members of said cult. If you are interested in things related to cults or you want to learn about it, you should play this game!
The Evil Within 2, developed by Tango Gameworks and published by Bethesda, 2018, ~30 euros:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a psychological horror game. You play the detective Sebastian Castellanos who’s thrown into a programmed town to retrieve his daughter. This town has been programmed as a sort of parallel dimension that can be inhabited by humans via linked consciousness. However, the town collapsed, and when you arrive most of the inhabitants have been turned into zombies.
So for starters, I like how the game induces horror, with the music, sound design, the position of the character who’s hiding a good part of the screen, the fact that he is slow even when running… The level design is simple but it works even if I’m not convinced by the use of an open world in a horror game. The level up of the character and the weapons is intuitive but a bit bland. You have several weapons available, but the game limits your ammunition. They are all common except the crossbow! Ah, the crossbow! I love this weapon! You have different kinds of bolts with different effects: lighting, smoke, bomb… The design of the enemies is, in my opinion, fairly usual for a zombie horror game but effective.
However, the story and characters are a bit bland in my opinion. The pitch of the story, of both The Evil Within games, is very interesting in my opinion, but I think it was better explored in the first game. The rest of the story is really not that interesting, it consists of go-to point A to point B. The only character I found interesting was Stefano (but honestly it’s probably because I’m a bit weird and I can relate to the idea of doing anything for your art, even killing… Even if I would never do that…) the other characters feel very caricatural, they have a two-line background that doesn’t even need to be there, and they are only there to help Sebastian advance the story, none of them have other goals or interests which ended up in one-dimensional characters without any flavor. Even the relationship between Sebastian and his family feels very empty.
I would only recommend this game if you are interested in a good horror game and not in a good story.

Class 1-A’s Comic Book Projects
I’ve been getting a lot of comments on Butterfly about how much people like the project the kids are working on.  First off, thank you for the lovely feedback! It started as an excuse to shoehorn in some themes and foreshadowing, while also giving the class something outside of the plot to talk about.  I didn’t think so many people would gravitate towards it.
With all that in mind, I decided to make some project headcanons for the whole class.  Relatively few of these will actually show up in the story, and the project itself will be mentioned less and less as it goes on.  All the more reason to put it here.
Here’s the link to the story itself for anyone who stumbles across this:  https://archiveofourown.org/works/17165612/chapters/40360787
The project is that the students had to pick out a pre-quirk comic book superhero, and write about how that hero relates to modern hero society.  They also had to pick a specific storyline to analyze, but I’m a filthy casual and won’t go into that.  Let’s go.
Midoriya - Superman
The only one actually relevant to the story.  Superman is like All Might, so naturally, Izuku would pick him.  Superman was also the first superhero as they are understood today, so there is also the meta perspective that they wouldn’t have their jobs without him.  But the thing about both of them is that their symbolic power is almost as effective as their physical power.  And with all that power, people too often forget that there’s a real person behind it.  A person who makes mistakes, who can’t alway save everyone, and who fears for their own future. Heroes are still human.
Bakugou - The Punisher
Isn’t Bakugou liking the Punisher basically canon?  But what Bakugou takes from him is perseverance.  Frank Castle fights an uphill battle that he can never truly win and could die from at any moment.  Yet he keeps going.  Because there’s nothing else he can do.  And that’s what heroes are supposed to do.
Todoroki - Firestorm
Firestorm is a guy who is two guys.  Todoroki feels like that sometimes.  But if he wants to accomplish his goals, he has to learn to work together with himself.  Not super relevant to broader hero society, but isn’t he a part of that society? (He had to argue a little on that one)
Sero - Spider-Man
Like most of his peers, Sero chose his hero based on the similar power set.  He spent admittedly too much time trying to recreate classic moves instead of analyzing Spidey’s place in history.  But then he realized that with how important the secret identity was to the character, not many people go for that anymore.  He ended up with a pretty deep look at hero regulation and how it’s hard to fit a secret identity with the current model.
Hagakure - The Invisible Woman (and the Fantastic Four)
Same initial deal as Sero, went for the similar power.  What she ended up discovering was that the Fantastic Four predicted close-knit hero teams would be rare.  Marvel’s first family is a disfuctional one, and probably wouldn’t last long with the added stress of modern hero bureaucracy.
Kouda - Aquaman
Insert obligatory talks to fish joke.  But Kouda did a fairly straightforward paper of how heroes protect the environment as well as people.
Yaoyorozu - Batman
She picked up Batman based on their similar need to be prepared; Yaoyorozu needs to memorize chemical formulas in advance, Batman needs to bring the right tools to a case.  But through her research, she found the much more interesting perspective of the dichotomy between hero and villain.  Anyone, powers or not, can make the choice to hurt another person.  And someone else can make the choice to stop them.  Both often involve violence.  So where should the line be drawn?
Tokoyami - Moon Knight
Moon Knight’s powers wax and wane with the cycle of his namesake, much as Tokoyami must carefully consider his actions based on the time of day.  Both must also contend with an additional voice telling them how to proceed.  Also, Moon Knight is Marvel’s answer to Batman and Yaoyoruzu beat him to it even though he called dibs this transgression will be avenged!
Iida - The Flash
The Flash is what Iida is working towards: a friendlier, funnier person that friend and stranger alike can open up to.  And shouldn’t all heroes want to be the sort of person the people they save would want to save them?
Mina - Wonder Woman
Something not as many people talk about in regards to Wonder Woman is the way she typically prefers to attempt nonviolent solutions to conflict before moving on to fists.  Mina is the same way, so she felt right at home (for once) while writing.
Kirishima - Luke Cage
A guy who’s skin is bulletproof?  So manly!  But Luke Cage and his stories have almost alway paralleled some real-world issue going on at the time.  In some cases, people believed his appearances to have helped influence public opinion about those issues.  Kirishima thinks more modern heroes should try and get involved like that,
Ojiro - Iron Fist
A quirk is just an extension of the body, and the body is the real weapon.  Both must be sharpened, not just one or the other.
Tsuyu - She-Hulk
Tsuyu doesn’t mind that people make assumptions about her based on her quirk; she’s a frog, so she’s easy-going and likes water.  But that doesn’t mean everyone is okay with stereotypes.  Jennifer Walters is a successful lawyer and hero, but still gets undermined by others for “anger issues.”  Tsuyu also admired her choice to remain in her She-Hulk form for the confidence it brings her, while many people in real life feel pressured to hide more extreme quirks in order to conform.
Aoyama - Dazzler
Searched “sparkly superhero” online and Dazzler was the first result.  Talked about the importance of aesthetics.
Uraraka - Booster Gold
Like Uraraka, Booster started out in it for the money.  He didn’t have the noble goals she had right out the gate, but was never a bad dude.  But after great hardship, he learned the valuable lesson that fame and fortune should always be second to saving people.
Kaminari - Thor
He had a bit of trouble figuring out what to do with his go-to god of thunder.  Unlike the more well-known MCU version, comics Thor isn’t super funny.  He’s got stuff going on, but Kaminari was really gunning for that humor angle.  So, he settled for discussing Thor’s origin and about the importance of staying humble in the face of great power and influence.
Sato - Hulk
When powering up costs you your intelligence, it can be hard to make good decisions in tough situations.  That’s why you need to make a plan before going rage-mode.
Shoji - Martian Manhunter
Shoji connected to J’onn J’onzz and his struggle to find acceptance with “normal” people right away.  The traditional image of what a hero is “supposed” to look like was out of date even then, and no one should be confinted to that box.
Jirou - Black Canary
The best heroes are good at a lot of different things.  Black Canary’s Wikipedia page under “skills” is nuts.  And Jirou epimmediately started looking up how to incorporate her musical skills into her arsenal.
Mineta - Rogue
I know what you’re thinking: why would I give one of Marvel’s best female characters to me of Hero Aca’s worst?  Two reasons.  One, Rogue is consistently near the top of “hottest hero women” lists, so Mineta probably found her there.  Second, the ethos of her character’s evolution is a line I think he could benefit from.  That being: get your shit together.  You can accomplish amazing things if you just get your shit together.  Sometimes, you are the problem.  Adjust your actions and mindset accordingly.  Get your shit together.
Well, that was long.  Thanks for reading if you made it this far.  Part of me kind of wants to write some of these essays mayself now.  But I think that would be a poor choice of time given my other projects.
Thanks again and please read Buttferfly!
