Any thoughts on Station19?
On this week's ep? I haven't seen it yet. Work's been crazy busy, and now that I'm done the sun is out. And when it sets I can think of at least two shows that interest me about ten times more (I believe The Wilds is up as of today, and fellow dutchies: how entertaining is De Verraders this season?!).
Oh Shondaland, how your glory days are over...

aaron bushnell knew exactly what he was doing. he states his intentions with total lucidity and sense of purpose. he knows what he's about to do is extreme--he says so. he speaks calmly, but he's clearly terrified. he takes a deep breath after pouring the accelerant over himself. he has to psyche himself up to light the flame. he struggles with the lighter. he says "free palestine" normally once before he starts to scream it. even through his agony he manages to say it one last time before he stops being able to speak at all. this is a man with total conviction. he wanted to help people, in any way possible. this action was a moral one, and any news outlet painting this as simply a mental health issue is a disservice to his memory. he knew what he was doing when he burned himself in uniform. he knew that there was a chance that sacrificing his own life could go on to save many others. this was the ultimate act of selflessness, and it should be treated as such. may he rest in peace.

Reminder that Palestinians in Gaza are being deliberately starved by Israel. Families in gaza are boiling plant leaves and eating them. They're also eating animals and birds food to stay alive. There are reported cases of kids and infants who died out of hunger and/ or cold. Starving people is part of genocide too. Remember how fast medicine was provided for the Israeli hostages, while Palestinians are starving for food and water and getting operations and amputations performed with no medication or anesthesia whatsoever.

people are drawing Steamboat Willie Mickey doing all this crazy shit and whatnot, but you could always do that. you can do that now, with current Mickey, just fine. it's fanart and it's legally protected. hell you could take Disney-drawn Mickey and put a caption about unions or whatever on it and it would still be protected under free speech and sometimes even parody law.
what is special about public domain is that you can SELL him. you could take a screenshot and sell it on a tshirt. you can use him to advertise your plumbing business. people have already uploaded and monetized the original film.
you could always have Mickey say what you want, but now you can profit off it.

[ID: A video recording of Bisan Owda, filming herself standing still and speaking in front of a car underneath the morning sky in Gaza, with the sun visible above her head. Loud sirens can be heard around her as she says:
"Hey, everyone. This is Bisan from Gaza. We're still alive, and we wish you a merry Christmas in the Christmas eve. Wish you a merry Christmas despite the churches of Gaza are closed, full of displaced people, and surrounded with snipers. We wish you a merry Christmas despite the children, women, men, Christians and Muslims of Gaza are murdered and under genocide. We wish you a merry Christmas despite that we cannot exchange gifts or spend our holidays in our homes because they are completely destroyed, and merry Christmas despite there are hundreds of killed, decomposed bodies in the the north of Gaza Strip in the streets, at least 137 them are field executed by the Israeli soldiers in front of their children. Merry Christmas, but pray for Gaza."
End ID.]
Please think about why these videos are coming out in English. In your tongue, so that you can understand them. Don't ignore them or get tired of seeing them or call them guilt-trippy. Don't stop talking about Palestine. Make Palestine impossible to ignore. Even at the cost of "disrupting" your celebrations.

Declutter Tumblr
The new layout it a whole mess. Thankfully Xkit can already help with a bunch of this! I'm sure it'll give more options soon.
Vanilla Tumblr:
(I have marked in red what can be removed. The tabs can be set not to stick, so you will really only see them at the top of your dash. Empty box on the left for hidden notifications and shop sparkle, i just didn't have any. I'm EU so no Live for me).

and if anybody else out there with access to a button press wants to make these pins for themselves i've included a sheet to print out under the readmore
as long as you're printing this in portrait orientation without margins on a 8.5x11 inch sheet of paper, this should print out in the correct sizes for 25mm buttons and 37mm buttons respectively
Tumblr media
apologies if tumblr shrinking the image size makes the image quality not so great if you print this out as it is, i'd suggest putting it through a threshold filter so it just uses black ink

i have such a love for characters who descend into madness or villainy out of deep, deep empathy. characters who fundamentally cannot cope with the cruel realities they find themselves in and blow up about it in spectacular fashion. fallen angel type characters with tears of outrage in their eyes. characters who break before they bend, and break so badly they splatter blood all over their noble ideals. every variation on it gets me so good

Atari 2600 Chronicles 1980 #14 - Bridge
I said there'd be 4 more reviews to close the year out with. Was working on the Wizard of Wor review only to figure out the release date had been confirmed to be in mid-1981. Less work for me, hurrah.
I'll be completely honest with you. I don't see myself coming back to this in the near future in the format that i'm currently working with. And it's not even because it's too much work or something like that- playing these games has been a really cool way to discover this whole world of the hobby that i've missed out for so long. I'm not sure if it's because of one of my mental quirks that I was extremely hard pressed to try things outside of my comfort zone, and I do think that this series has helped me step over it somewhat.
No, the unfortunate reason is that my confidence in review writing has completely flatlined. I'm honestly exhausted from trying to find new phrases or sentence structures to use, only to realise it's the same damn thing I wrote multiple times over already, or is a too on the nose reference to videos i've watched recently. Realising that my English is still lacking in the vocab and grammar departments after pretty much surrounding myself with it entirely for over a decade does not bode well for when these reviews would get even longer and the games themselves significantly larger. This whole doubting myself and thinking of new wording thing has made writing these things last hours, even when they only end up being a couple paragraphs long.
I don't wanna give up, though. I have set out on this mission to try out as many retro nonsense as possible and have better means to continue than ever before. Been using my dormant PS2 and aftermarket NES a lot more to prepare all of this, and there's also the shiny new Atari 2600+ that has spiked my intrigue for the system more than ever before. I'd love to keep the good times rolling and at MINIMUM give all the games I *can* feasibly play a look for half an hour or so. If not more if there's a proper goal to reach, or the title is straight up addictive like Dodge 'Em or Dragster.
I'm taking January off to think of my next plans. I currently have 4 things in mind that I could do to regenerate my love for the writing segments of this experience. 1. Attempt to shorten my reviews and work on my rambling. Problem would be that the fine details could well be swept under the rug, though i'm unsure if I am passionate about doing full research. It may be for the best to talk from the heart rather than my head, it seems to have delivered a better writing 'flow' whenever I would try it. Heck, even with this long winded vent, I found myself scrambling for things to talk about significantly less. 2. Only cover 1 system at a time so I won't need to hop back and forth continually. That's got me dubbing between the two systems i'm covering now and the NES. All of them have their positives and negatives, so i'd need to think it over. 3. Tier list-ify my reviews and put the focus on comparing it to prior games i've played during the year. The No-Swear Gamer does it and has an incredibly list for the Atari 2600 in particular. I dunno, that sounds like my cup of tea and worth analysing, even if it means the individual parts of the game may be talked about less. 4. So there's also something else I found interesting. I could keep the actual review very short though with the grading still intact- and then work on *challenges* for people to tackle, including myself. A bit of an own take on RetroAchievements, if you will, though with a focus on milestones.
I'd love to hear your feedback! It would be a shame to quit while i'm just about in the early golden age of retro goodness. 1981 has so many cool games to check out and I wanna do them justice in a way that would be pleasant to both the reader and myself. Thanks for reading through this all, and prior reviews, and I hope y'all have a great 2024!
The Verdict
Graphics (5): Hurrah! It's functional! Card game diamonds never looked so pleasant. It's beyond tolerable if you enjoy looking at a gray-blue background all the time.
Sound (4): Not a disaster to the ears, unlike Checkers. Cuz there's nothing to listen to. This is another 2 sound effect game. Good grief.
Fun Factor (??):
Tumblr media
A CARD GAME? I THOUGHT WE WERE GONNA BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE!!
Longevity (5): So many ways to outcard the AI. 7 in total. Gotta admit, there's a lot of difficulty switch settings to vary it up juuuuuuuuuuuuust a bit. No multiplayer kinda does kill it's chances of it being anything more than a practice cartridge though.
In Conclusion

*Note: May not have actually played the game.

This child in gaza is screaming:
"I wish it was a dream. Oh, mom and dad. I wish it was a dream and my mom and dad are still alive" after being rescued from underneath the rubble to find his parents killed by Israel.
Share this, we are not numbers. Let our voices be heard in hopes that this stops.
