[Text: Tell me, what do you think of people actually liking the character development in season 4-5 and the show's treatment of mental health? [Redacted] thinks that and she's the mother of a teenager]

Re liking the show: I generally assume that they have poor taste and/or media literacy.

Re the mental health rep: I generally assume that they're incredibly privileged and/or ignorant.

I'm posting this as an image and not an ask response specifically because I will not participate in fandom drama or shaming. This blog exists specifically so that people can actively choose to engage in my content and so that I can post critical thoughts without dragging their source into some petty fight. So I'm not going to talk about the named individual. Instead, I'll replace them with the show's head writer and talk about him in a similar context.*

He's pretty famously denied that Chloe suffered any abuse, ignoring her obvious neglect, which came from both parents, just in different forms. When you pair that with how the show handles people like Gabe and Jagged Stone, we see a clear pattern of the show ignoring the devastating effects that abandonment and neglect can have on a person, especially if they're a child.

Now you could look at that and say, "The head writer condones abuse! He's a monster!" But I prefer to go the more likely route and assume that he's a privileged middle-class cis white man who has never had to deal with those issues or support someone who has, so he has no idea how to handle them properly or that they even need to be properly handled. There's every chance that he's a loving, kind man and a fantastic father who just happens to not be very good at writing a complex topic that he clearly has no understanding of or desire to learn about. I apply similar logic to fans who share his opinions. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence or ignorance.

And all of the above is assuming that we're talking about someone who thinks that the show is objectively good or that the mental health rep is good, which are big assumptions. It's fully possible to enjoy a piece of media that you know is objectively bad or even "problematic" in some way.

Personal confession time: is Loonatics Unleashed an objectively terrible show that you should never, ever watch? Absolutely. 100%. Are Rev Runner and Tech E. Coyote two of my favorite characters who will live rent free in my head until the day I die? Yep! I pulled up a YouTube highlight real as I was writing this and those dorks still make me smile even though the show is terrible on multiple levels and I know that I'm not alone in that sentiment. Those two clicked with a lot of people for some reason.

A piece of fiction need not be good for you to love it and you don't need to justify your love for a piece of fiction if you're not claiming that it's good. Similarly, people hating that piece of fiction or pointing out flaws in it is not a reflection on you in any way shape or form. You can even agree with their criticism and still love the piece of fiction. This approach to media - loving a thing in spite of its flaws - is normal and healthy and I'd really love to see it make a comeback in younger fandoms.

Like, I cannot emphasize this enough, most fandoms consider it perfectly normal to have lots of fans who are critical of the source or who have even lost interest in the source for one reason or another, but they still like some element of the source enough to want to create/consume fan content for it. These more critical fans arguably make some of the best fan content because looking at canon and saying "That's nice, let me show you how I'd do it" often leads to some of the most complex stories that you'll see in fandom spaces. Stories that can often blow canon out of the water for TV shows and movies since fanfic isn't limited by budgets or studio policies or marketability concerns. Fans who think that the source is perfect tend to just write fluff or romcom type fics, which is not a dig! I love bother of those genres! But woman does not live on fluff alone.

Obviously there's some complexity here because who decides if a show is bad? Saying "it's okay that you like a terrible thing" can certainly sound like an insult and prompt a feeling of needing to defend the thing, which is why I don't fight with fans who like the show. There's really no need to convince them that the thing they like is bad. Do I think it is? Yes. Does it matter if they disagree? No, not really. At worst, they create stories with similar issues and, well, they're not the only ones and fighting with them isn't going to stop them. You're much better off focusing on creating your own good media and trying to get that popular. Heck, even if you made the head writer see all of Miracuous' flaws, it wouldn't change anything. The show is already made.

So, yeah, I don't really assume anything bad about people who think that miraculous is good. I know lots of wonderful people who have terrible taste in media and I'm still friends with them. I just don't take recommendations from them.

It's important to remember that, when you're online in a fandom space, a person is condensed down to a very tiny snapshot of who they are and judging a person solely off of their thoughts regarding a poorly written kids show is a dangerous path to tread. Like, looking at this blog, you might assume that I spend all of my time thinking about miraculous and obsessing over its flaws, which is very much not the case. I actually have this blog specifically so that I don't obsess over miraculous' flaws because I've found that, when something is bothering me, writing it down or talking to someone about it is the best way to stop thinking about it. Even then, most of my posts are reblogs of stuff I come across while browsing my tumblr feed, which is not solely miraculous content. I mostly interact with the show by creating non-salty fanfic that I honestly enjoy writing and find to be a relaxing, positive outlet.

It's human nature to judge and it's totally normal to think that a person's an idiot because of something they post online, but be careful to not lean into those thoughts too hard. At the end of the day, Miraculous is just a stupid kids show that will fade from the popular consciousness a few years after it stops airing. If it and/or the fandom are negatively affecting your mental health, then it's okay to step away for a while or use the block button. It really is your best friend. I enjoy being critical about Miraculous specifically because it's not that important. While I do think that kids deserve better media, I don't think Miraculous is some terrible evil harming the youth. I'm not horrified when a kid watches it, it's just not a show that I'd encourage them to watch and, if the kids was close to me, we'd spend a lot of time talking about the bad things that the show showcases from time to time. There are lots of episodes that are fine and I can think of way worse kids shows. Shows that tell their horrifying morals really well, making a kid far more likely to pick up on them and internalize them.

*Note that I only feel comfortable talking about the head writer like this because he's a public figure with an active social media presence AND because I'm not @ing him. If he was a private person or if he was not a professional creator, then I would not talk about him like this and even in that context I try to avoid it whenever I can. You can think that he's a terrible writer, but he's still a human being and, as far as I'm aware, nothing he's done deserves people harassing him.

I absolutely understand how devastating it can be to see a story you love get ruined by the creative team. The first time that happened to me, the life lesson I came away with was, "I will no longer put my happiness in the hands of another creator. I will enjoy stories, but I will temper my expectations and remember that they're just another human being and it's completely possible that their vision for this seemingly awesome story may end up being terrible."

Today marks the one year anniversary of this blog's first post!

One year ago today, I acted on a whim and made a new blog to post moments from this show that, without context, look absolutely insane. I thought it was funny, my friends thought it was funny, but I didn't really have any big plans. I thought "I'll keep this around for a little bit and then probably drop it". Like I usually do with most projects of this nature.

If you'd told me I'd still be here a year later, I wouldn't have believed you. I especially wouldn't have believed you if you told me how many followers this account would amass in that time period. Honestly even being here now and seeing all of it, it's still a little hard to believe.

Thank you all for supporting this ridiculous little blog. It means a lot.

And after all this time, perhaps it's time for a proper introduction.

Hi, I'm YoshiStack! I've been utterly obsessed with this show since I was 4 years old and I've been involved in the fandom in some capacity since I was 13. Given that I'm about to turn 24 here in a little over a month, you could say I've been here for awhile!

Aside from this blog and the other few video edits I've done, my main contribution to fannish materials is fanfiction! I mostly write gen work about the friendship between the characters, as that's always been one of my favorite parts about the show and characters. You can find my CL work (and other oddities too if you're feeling adventurous) on Ao3 also under the name YoshiStack.

I'm also on YouTube! Right now I'm wrapping up a playthrough of the original Super Mario RPG before the remake releases and in the middle of a playthrough of a childhood game of mine, Thrillville: Off The Rails. I'm still a novice when it comes to recording stuff, but I'm having a lot of fun doing it and it'd mean the world to me if you checked it out.

Now here's some answers to some basic questions for CL and this blog that you may or may not have wondered about:

Favorite Character: Definitely Aelita! I love her arc! Her development from this character the others feel very protective over to ultimate sass master is so fun to watch

Favorite Episode: Oh that's so hard. But If I had to pick just a few...[REDACTED UNTIL POLLS CONCLUDE]

Spoilsport. Favorite season then?: Oh this one is easy! Season 2 for sure! It does a great job introducing all the new elements you need to know about in the beginning of it (Franz Hopper, William, Sector 5, etc) and has well done pay off at the end. And the stuff in the middle is just downright fun! A well executed season all around

Favorite Sector: Prooooobably forest? Something about all the trees is fun to me. Honestly I like most of the sector though. Minus desert. Too much desert in S1

Favorite Monster: I used to be all about the Bloks, but after running this blog for a year now I've gained an appreciation for the comedy that the Tarantulas often pull off. From well timed devirtualizations to killing one of its buddies with their own lasers, they're unintentionally really funny!

Favorite XANA Attack: I unironically love the food monster. Also the rat army. It's absolutely horrifying but pulled off so well

Favorite relationship: Ulrich and Aelita all the way man. Platonically I mean, their friendship is so underrated in the show itself but the few times they get to interact they're just gold (I am Jerlita trash too if you want to know more in that kind of relationship sense)

How do you pick out of context moments?: Honestly most of the time I just pick a random few episodes and skim through until I find something. Sometimes I'll have a particular moment in mind, but sometimes the funniest clips come from me just mindlessly looking through some episodes

Will you ever do Evolution out of context?: I considered using a clip from it for April Fools Day but I got lazy and never got around to it lol. Aside from that idea though, I don't know Evolution well enough to pulls clips from it, and I'm just not super interested in doing so at the moment. If anyone else reading this though has a burning desire though then you absolutely have my blessing (not that you need it obviously)

What do you think about the idea of the show possibly getting a continuation?: So I’ve always been pretty set in my thought that the show doesn’t really need a continuation. While more backstory on Project Carthage would be cool, it never really mattered to the Lyoko Warriors in the end, and the idea of bringing XANA back after they fought so hard to bring it down always felt cheap to me. They had their fight, they won, let them move on in peace.

That being said, the idea of the brains largely responsible for the original show having a genuine interest in continuing does have me at least a little intrigued. It’s way too soon to say whether or not anything will come from that interest of course—TV is a complicated thing and interest from creators alone isn’t enough to make it happen. But if nothing else, it’s nice to know that even all these years later, there’s still interest in the show and these characters from them.

How long will this blog be around?: Honestly I have no idea! I never thought I'd make it this far! I have no plans on stopping any time soon at least—there's tons of episodes I haven't even touched for out of context moments, so I'm not running out of material any time soon!

For now I’m just going to letting things run their course naturally and enjoy the ride.

Primarily Teen Wolf and Harry Potter. HP was my original homeslice and I kind of sharpened my teeth on fic-writing in general there, found what I liked and didn't like, how to engage with fandom, what I found attractive and what turned me off (for characters and plot beats), honed my craft and made my mistakes there and then with the advent of AO3 and the finding of Teen Wolf, I feel like I blossomed and built a home and am hopefully making fewer oopsiedoosles. Though I have also written a fic or so for: Hannibal, The Meg, Mr. Robot, X-Men, Star Trek, and Breaking Bad.

Not anymore. Occasionally one that asks a direct question I'll answer, if that answer isn't already somewhere on or in the fic.

Though the last one I answered was someone who didn't read my tags or notes, telling me I didn't warn for something that was in the tags and notes, and I was so polite, like, "How can I make this clearer?" instead of saying, "#!@%^&$@$@#^$%&$^&^&$%^@#$%" like I fucking wanted to and they then said: "Oh yeah, I didn't read any of that, guess you don't need to change anything." Which was exactly what I expected would happen and I took the time to answer because I want more than anything to teach that person a lesson, even though I am absolutely certain they learned nothing from the interaction. But I tried, I did my part, and I wasn't even an asshole about it. (Please, please, please, the amount of times I've been told in the snarkiest damn fashion to tag for something that is already fucking tagged...... like, how do I have to say: read the tags before snidely chastising me for what isn't in them?? And it's not like.... I used different language or anything, they will ask me to tag for the EXACT DAMN TAG already on the fic. My collection of these comments is genuinely getting out of hand.)

And there is one I kind of want to answer that I got in the last month or so because it's one of the nicest and most vulnerable things I've ever been told but there aren't enough letters, or strong enough ones, or big enough ones to hold all the gratitude and care that wants to pour into them so I just... haven't.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hrm, I think these are just the most obvious of those and if I actually had to sit with this and go through my catalogue of fic, I would come up with a way more off-center answer because the angst is much subtler but harder hitting but that sounds like it would take brain power and, wow, is it that late already *coughs*

Either I Smoke My Friends Down to the Filter or But the Mess Prevails. I think maybe the latter because it's kind of triumphant in ISMFDttF, Stiles stands up for himself, but in BtMP they both want to be together but it's just another way for Derek to punish himself if they are.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Similar caveat to the one above as I'm not really focusing on ending (because more brain power) as much as just happy overall. Either [Hilary Duff Lyric Redacted] or Instructions for Dancing - they are both just fluff bombs almost entirely from start to finish.

Do you get hate on fics?

Mostly no. There's one fic that I have comments turned off on (THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS FUNCTION, AO3, 10000000% THIS FIC WOULD NOT STILL EXIST IF NOT FOR YOU) because people would yell things at me I already explicitly stated I agreed with? Like I wrote a fic for a fest (back when I wrote in a lot fests, lol), it was a dark prompt and I can't remember if the prompter wanted a happy ending or if it was a stipulation of the fest that it couldn't end badly but it's a dark prompt so while I could get the two characters to the point of co-parenting, I did not get them back together. And the comments I mainly got were: how dare you get them the fuck back together? To which I was like: um, I didn't, also if I was forced to keep going with this fic, this character would end up with this one instead. And then I got a deluge of comments that were like: how dare you get them back together!? And for a while, I explained that you read into it, which is understandable as - to satisfy whomever's requirement - it is an impression I wanted you to walk away with, but as you'll notice at no point are they back together or romantically involved again, they're in the same room and have reached a ceasefire, that's it. And that's as friendly as I see that relationship getting, and no one read any of that and kept yelling at me for the same reason and mentally I was like: fuck all of you, either the fic goes or I do so I turned off the comments so I wouldn't delete it. I find since commenting is off (or "hidden" rather, I can still see it and have the option to approve or nuke it), people have to really engage with a) what I've already replied before and b) whether or not it's worth it to leave a review that will literally only be seen by me. Suddenly everyone has reading comprehension and no one is just yelling to yell because the only one you're engaging with is *jazz hands* me, and I am obviously not the audience for that.

Do you write smut?

Yep!

Craziest crossover:

I have a Hunger Games/TW one that is one of two unfinished fics on AO3 because every time I even think about it, it intimidates me. And since I don't read crossovers, I have no idea how you're supposed to do them or how much of the other IP you can take on without it seeming like you've just rewritten with different characters or how much you should change when everyone knows what you're working from anyway - it's all a mystery to me and I am flummoxed by it.

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

People post my old HP shit that no longer exists on the internet to Wattpad quite a bit and I am not savvy enough to figure out how to get it down. The few times I've contacted people who posted it under my name to take it down, instead just remove my name and fully pretend it's theirs. On some, I've found the people on LJ who have saved the fic in question and are giving it out and quietly asked them to stop because they were ending up as stolen fic on Wattpad.

Em and I have started one but never finished - it's me, I'm Mr. Ambrose: "I start, I don't finish things."

All time favorite ship?

I think it's Stiles and Derek, man??? I don't know, I have a lot of niche ones too that I feel like if there were more content/interest, they would be it but there isn't sooooo....

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

That THG/TW fic - it scares me so much. Like, who was that confident girl who didn't understand things at all and was like: yeah, that's fine? Don't know her. PvW - I have a lot written in the future and for the next chapter, plus an outline, it's just a matter of getting my attention to stay on it and I have the next chapter of WDHGsGA written and an outline for the next two, I just don't want to post it until it's totally finished so I don't have to worry about losing the atmosphere/tone again and, again, I just have to get my focus back to it but the chances of me letting that writing go totally down the drain? Unlikely.

What are your writing strengths?

Um, I think I have a good understanding of how humans work. I think writing is definitely made a lot easier when you have a handle on the psychology and a gut sense for people. It's not hard to craft fake scenarios when you have a pretty decent understanding of how people would react in them.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Grammar-wise, commas throw me completely. I have no idea where they're supposed to go and I do my best, okay?! I really only got Florida public school education on this and it was: wherever you feel like you should have one, do that.

More generally, I also feel like I don't have the same needs to satisfy as a large percentage of readers - I need a relationship at the core of a fic to feel significant and weighty to want to write a story about it, but that doesn't mean it needs to survive to the end of said fic or that characters need to hit certain relationship milestones for it to feel worthwhile to me. I think this sometimes leads me to endings that some people feel are unsatisfying because I got what I needed but maybe some readers didn't?

Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

Totally neutral. Doesn't bother or thrill me to any extent.

First fandom you wrote in?

Harry Potter.

Favorite fic you've written?

Favorite? That's hard. I'm, as mentioned, super shitty at finishing things so the fact that TMaH is completed - even without going into any of its content (all of which is made to order, absolutely my favorite stuff) - makes it a top contender.

I also still really love A Fine Foray into Fashionable Fellatio, the last Harry Potter fic I wrote, which was Draco/Ron. I love that to kick my brain into gear, I would start mentally painting the scenes, from oranges and reds to beiges and cool winter blues - I don't know I've ever used color so much in anything. It hasn't worked since and I think it's because - having been away from those characters and that fandom for so long - I had such a crystal clear image of them and because Draco, especially, was so different from how he's usually pictured in fic/fanart (curly-haired, absolutely swank as fuck Muggle style) that the lines were so defined it was easy to paint within them.

And I think my favorite writing piece right now is He Speaks in Petals. It's such a short fic and I reread it in the last year or so and it's so much more lyrical than I remember. I knew that was what I was going for and I did not think I managed it but it's got some really soft, kind whimsy to it that I like a lot and find very calming and reaffirming.

in general mario wonder was a fucking GREAT experience. got it day 1. streamed it to like 3 people. played on my own for the rest of that day. proceeded to beat it the next. then I 100%ed it within the next two days (minus the standees because I did stupid shit and totally forgot to spend my flower coins on them so I missed all the bonuses that would have made that easier) but all in all holy shit I love that game. the online is so fun and im still trying to figure out if I can take up lexis offer on racing it heuheuheu...

pizza tower is also a Really Fucking Good Game god. I waited 5 years and I was not disappointed. this [cheesy pizza pun redacted]. i recently p-ranked the final boss to finish my 100% savefile and it's so fun to replay tbh. not to mention the modding scene god it's big and the amount of shit people are doing with this game is insane. and they're still adding new official content to the game too!!! it's crazy !! cannot fucking wait for the noise update...

ANTON BLAST 💥💥💥 was pretty fuckin good. i love the ctr boost mechanic. not to mention the voice clips and music and sound design and the animations and everything else about the game is just mwah. very pretty. it's just two levels right now and I'm having a [antonblast pun redacted]. people kept saying pizza tower is a wariolike but I beg to differ, frankly. pt is much more similar to like. sonic. i believe antonblast is the true wariolike here. can't wait to play it when it comes out ^^

vividlope was a pleasant surprise! one of my friends introduced it to me while they were srteaming it in a vc and god it's fun. best way I can explain it is like. Autistic Q*Bert. lil painter rabbit girl walking simulator.. 3 dimensional.. and they added a level editor a little bit back too so now you can make funny levels and things like this!!

although this game is fucking infuriating at times. jaklub you are a monster

remembered some of my host design thoughts from 2020 just gonna straight up copy and paste them some grammar mistakes don't mind that too much

host design progress/thoughts/etc/etc

schmitty - when i listened to his (scared) tmp2 voicelines i imagined him (and did like 2 doodles) as a humanoid red quip. whether or not that's because me and my friends memed said quip a lot and i began assoisating the quip with schmitty might...idk be up in the air lol.

anyways i basically made him a human verison of the red quip and my human verison for him came later

cookie masterson - i think i listened to his F U easter eggs? and then boom. cookie, made his tie a ...cookie tie bc of his name lol

REDACTED - i think i listened to the tmp1 " voice reveals "? i forgot, man it's only been two months. anyways i know i based their look soley on something said on their tumblr page, " based raised in the woods ". and i made their " not shadowy " form not too long after

one sketch i have is her with eyes on her arms which i believe i did put in, in her monster form . ok i just found when i got around to linearting and coloring, i realized her outfit was too similar to the mother in her game so i changed it (and ngl i was thinking of maid outfit kinda) i looked up vintage clothes and gave her something from that, and red shoes lol

dixie - aww my first sketch for her was cute, i wanted something flowy, i made her somewhat angelic! and her dress has clouds ..and the thing around his waist and her cape are supposed to represent the millions of words made up! civic doodle hostress and old man - AHHA my first doodle of old man was just a stick figure bc thats how hes shown in the ride. and i gave them both stick figure forms bc why not? EHAj i wasnt sure what colors to give to them at first so i used ms paint colors, AND OLD MANS BEARD WAS MADE OUT OF POMPOMS..God haa i didnt give him a beard at first when i finalized both of their designs

The fearsome Wutugald!

My response to The Maniculum's Bestiaryposting challenge!

There were a couple of aspects of these critters that I couldn't quite work out how to represent, so it's been really interesting seeing the ways other people have done that!

I haven't done any drawing for... let's just say ages, so it's been a nice excuse to pull out the pen and ink, and remember how! I appreciate the work that has gone into preparing this challenge, so thank you @maniculum!

Bonus quick sketch of the offspring of a Wutugald and a Lion that was mentioned in the description. I kinda messed this up a little, particularly around the nose, but I wanted to put it in there anyway. The lion mane and shading around the eyes are making it look a little more fabulous than intended...

Design decisions under the cut...

Now, I'm pretty sure I've worked out the identify of both these critters (does that make me a massive nerd? :D), so I tried to put that all from my mind when attempting this challenge (but it's possible some aspects may have slipped in unconsciously).

Firstly, I tried to work out what animal to base this off; a carnivore screams either wolf or bear to me, and if I've learned anything from seeing some of the medieval scorpions @maniculum has been posting, it's that any critter one could name has been drawn by some poor medieval illustrator looking like a dog, or a turtle (or occasionally a kangaroo...)

The only reference I used was briefly looking at a medieval illustration of a lion, so I could get an idea of how to draw the mane on the [redacted] offspring of the Wutugald and a lion...

"Since its spine is rigid, all in one piece, it cannot turn round except by turning its body right around." - Let's give it a perfectly horizontal back, including tail. I assume that this critter can't easily move it's head up and down due to its rigid spine, so I imagine if it needs to eat or drink, it crouches down.

"If dogs hunting the Wutugald accidentally touch its shadow behind, they lose their voices and cannot bark." - I drew the shadow! (but no doggos, keep your dogs away!). I finally get why shadows are hard to render in video games - shadows are hard!

"In its search for buried bodies, the Wutugald digs up graves." - Big claws for digging, and lots of pointy teeth for eating!

"This beast has a stone in its eyes, called [redacted]; anyone who keeps it under his tongue is believed to foretell the future." - I tried giving it a square iris

"It is true that if the Wutugald walks three times around any animal, the animal cannot move." - I imagine that would be quite a sight given it has no flex in its spine...

"In a part of Ethiopia the Wutugald mates with the lion; their union produces a monster, named [redacted]. [...] It never tries to change the direction of its glance but strives to see without changing it. It has no gums in its mouth. Its single, continuous tooth is closed naturally like a casket so that it is never blunted." - I tried to show off the forward facing eyes, a partial lion mane, and what I imagine to be a single, razor-like tooth

I never finished reading this either though sorry </3 Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - metafiction play about characters and the absurdity of their existence, repeating stories, tragedy is only a story and the characters within only exist to tell that story regardless of their own individuality Wuthering Heights - toxic romance the novel, idk why I didn't have this here yet. "EVERYTHING IS FINE" is awesome, but it is NOT FOR EVERYONE

Hi! So recently I've gotten into the Webtoon "Everything Is Fine," created by Mike Birchall. And honestly? I'm fucking loving it right now! And I don't see many people really talking about it on Tumblr, which is frankly a crime considering how popular it is on Webtoon itself!!

I wish I could talk to all my friends about this webcomic, but I am fully aware that there are a few VERY BIG hurdles that some people would need to get past first.

So! To all my mutuals and followers, let me give you my pitch for this webcomic, along with a few disclaimers on what's to come.

IS THIS A "CUTE BUT SECRETLY EDGY" THING?

The main way I found out about this webcomic was through marketed/animated ads on Youtube. The general vibe that they were going for was that it was a "looks cute but is actually really fucked up" story. Think your Happy Tree Friends or Don't Hug Me I'm Scared's. Designed to lure you in and then SLAP you across the face with all of its gore and fucked-upness. If you've seen ads for a game called "Evertale" on youtube that kinda looks like pokemon, you understand what I'm saying and I get your apprehension.

And don't get me wrong, those worries are not unfounded! There's some stuff in this comic that is really messed up and honestly leaves me up at night. But while in the cases of the two above samples they feel more to shock, Everything Is Fine feels a bit more deliberate in what it does. They feel like they're a product of the world and a side-effect to the setting. The fucked-upness holds a purpose outside of shock and says something.

(this isn't to bash on the two above examples btw, no shame in liking them. However for me personally, it definitely seems more for the purpose of drawing in attention than telling a story)

The first 12 "episodes" have by far some of the darkest in terms of content-- ALL OF WHICH I WILL LIST AT THE BOTTOM WITH A "READMORE" LINK--but if you make it past those first 12 chapters, there's a really damn compelling story waiting for you. The moment that the main character Maggie opens up a science book, that's when you've crossed that threshold.

Everything past this point is spoiler territory, so if you already feel like going into this then I recommend just reading the warnings past the read more then heading into the story blind.

OKAY SO WHAT IS THIS STORY THEN

Here's my best elevator pitch for this series:

It's a dystopian domestic thriller that utilizes a suburbia setting to enforce themes of formality and productivity vs family and love, while also incorporating a "Mind games battle" style into its action ala The Promised Neverland or Death Note.

Whew, that certainly was a word salad! Lemme break it down a bit more.

-Dystopian Domestic Thriller?

The exact scale of this story (at least at the time of writing this) is very small scale. It focuses on two characters: Maggie and Sam, a married couple that are forced--alongside everyone else--to live in a picturesque happy neighborhood. A very "Howdy neighbor, can I borrow a cup of sugar" type place, and if you deviate from that vision then... well, it doesn't end pretty.

However, despite just how grand a change this is (the world is implied to have been just like ours 7 years ago or so), the focus is much more intimate. The whole first chapter solely focuses on five different characters, all of whom are neighbors in this dystopia trying to get by, along with getting the reader acquainted with their situation. And, despite the friendly faces, each family wouldn't think twice about throwing each other under the bus if it meant they could move up in the world and get a chance to [REDACTED, GOTTA READ TO FIND OUT YOURSELF BUD].

There are no evil monsters. There's no big bad boogeymen waiting in your closet to eat your brains. All there is is your neighbors, the ones that wake up next to you with a smile on their face. And it's almost impossible to tell whether or not their smile is genuine or not.

-"Mind games battle?"

If you haven't read The Promised Neverland (or watched season 1 of the anime and ONLY season 1) or are acquainted with "mind games battles" in general, imagine this scenario:

There are two different characters, each of them entirely equal in their strengths and weaknesses. One has a diamond, the other wants the gem for themselves. To try and get the diamond, the thief tricks the other into thinking they already have it, causing the owner to reveal the key's location so they can steal it themselves.

That is the essence of "Mind game battles" or (coined by SuperEyepatchWolf) a "Non-Battle Battle" story. Very little violence truly happens, the core focus is on espionage and getting a leg up on your opponent by figuring out what they're going to try and do, then countering with your own plan. Highly recommend checking out his video btw

This might seem a little strange compared to what I just described with the whole "Suburban Dystopia" setting, but this brings it down to its core elements. Everyone is a normal person, at the youngest about 30 years old, and in the end they want to throw each other under the bus to get further in life. It utilizes that suburban dystopia setting with the fear that "secretly, deep down, all your friendly neighbors and friends wouldn't blink to sacrificing you for something more" and it hits fucking hard, leading to a story about forging your own path and recognizing who truly matters in your life.

It is MUCH more subdued and tame compared to the above examples, but believe me when I say this was intended from the very beginning, and it's only going to get better.

BUT WHAT'S THE POINT OF THE STORY

So if you're like me and you tend to try and search for a bit more meaning in your stories, you might be wondering why you should read this (aside from my recommendation of course). You might ask "yeah if it's scary/fucked up, cool. But is that all?" If you're the type that stays away from horror-esque scenarios like this, I can doubly understand (again, READ THE WARNINGS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST).

But as I've been growing into the adult world, a constant nagging fear that's been growing is the thought "People are only nice to you out of necessity, none of their kind words hold any truth to them. Their smiles are only of toleration." With how much of the business world thrives on that sort of formal kindness (job interviews, sucking up to your boss, etc.), it has ended up leaking out into my personal life and causing some pretty harsh damage to my mental health.

This webcomic not only feels like the first story to address this specific fear, but also one that has a direct answer/resolution to that. Yes, sometimes it may feel like it's impossible to tell who's truly kind and who needs to be kind. It will feel hard to truly tell that difference.

But no matter what fear you feel, no matter how impossible that feeling is to overcome, there will always be someone in your corner that loves you for you. Their smiles are not of necessity, but of enjoyment of your presence. And if you acknowledge them and trust in that kindness, nothing will stand in your way.

And... fuck man, I don't know. I think that's something I kinda needed to be told, and something I think a lot of other people need to hear.

So yeah! "Everything Is Fine" is a fucking banger and I highly recommend it! If all of the above parts (and the below warnings, FOR THE LAST TIME CHECK THOSE WARNINGS) didn't bother you and you seem intrigued, go check out the webcomic and send some cash the dude's way. Chapter 2 is getting into full swing, and I want some peeps to enjoy this with as these two keep moving their way upwards.

TIME FOR ALL THE CONTENT WARNINGS

-One of the things in episode 1 at the very start is a decaying dog carcass, which has been implied to be sitting there for at least a couple months rotting away.

-In episode 3, a starving homeless man is given said carcass. I don't think I need to go into detail here.

-Body horror doesn't come up too frequently, but let's just say those masks aren't just masks. This starts subtly at episode 9 and 11, but from then on it'll become more apparent when it comes up.

-Several moments of suicidal implications come up throughout as well, most especially in Episode 11. They often have warnings at the start of the chapters when they happen though.

-Attempted murder and successful murder, via bashing a person's head in! Oh boy!! These will be apparent when they come up as well, keep an eye on that hammer.

The last warning is a SUPER BIG SPOILER so don't read it if you don't wanna be spoiled.

One of the biggest punishments/consequences that each of the characters can be given is called "Red Status." Getting into Red doesn't kill you, but instead it forces whoever is subjected to watch their children die--though vague, it's implied that those fates are. Not kind. Episode 26 gives us a front row seat to two children seemingly being forced to jump off a tall building and commit suicide. They don't show the bodies, but it still very much happens. It's one of the most subtle, but horrifying moments in the series so far.

Definitely not as bad as a lot of other stuff out there, but... that dog scene man. Fucks me up still today, and I know one specific person it would fuck up the most. So if these are too much for you, you know what to do.

GALLOW BEAR as random as it might seem you'd think a hangning gallows + a bear would be straight forward, but actually the Japanese reads GALLOWIN BEAR, which immediately makes this more confusing. As best I can tell this a reference to the mech, Gallowin, in the 1988 Hades Project Zerorymer, but I have no idea what about that it's supposed to evoke in this random bear monster. It's possible the mech itself is referencing something but I couldn't seem to find any trace of it.

VENOM BEAR is just the words Venom and Bear. I dunno what else to say. For some bizarre reason when they decided to bring it back for Alter Code F they gave it a seemingly totally unrelated model, but we'll get to that in a bit....

SNATCHER's a good fun one. The original Japanese reads BANDERSNATCH as in the Through the Looking-Glass creature. In WA3 it appears in random encounters along side the JABBRWOCK. (It's had a variety of quirky descriptions over the years, as you'd expect from Lewis Carroll invention, but given where the WA3 design lands it I'm opting to use the Peter Newell illustration, which is distinctly lion-like.)

SABNAK which should probably be SABNAC or SABNACK is another demon, pulled from all the usual sources: Ars Goetia, Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, and all that jazz. It's depicted as an armored knight with the head of a lion.

LEONHARDT this feels like it should be more straight forward but I can't seem to make heads or tails of it... Leon obviously lends itself to the lion motif, but is it the name LEONHART? LEONHARD? LEONHARDT?? None of those really point to any meaningful sort of figure, real world or fictional/mythological that. It's definitely a popular name in bad JRPG and anime adjacent properties but a lot of those came after Wild Arms, and even so continue to not really be relevant? Just a big generic mystery.

GRENDEL is of course the central monster in the myth of BEOWULF (funny enough his family tree is coming right up) but in WA2 was given this cool if sorta random looking saturday morning tokusatsu monster design. And it's this model that was used for the Code F VENOM BEAR, despite verymuch not being a bear of any sort....

GORBASH is the dragon in the Rankin Bass animated film, Flight of the Dragons. Which is a hell of a deep cut on the WA staff's part... That's one of those things I just kind of assumed never made it out of the US market at all.

VIVEL Which as best I can tell was supposed to be VOUIVRE, a dragon-like creature of old French lore.

I got into it in April 2003 (I was 11 at that time). Watching anime on TV was the only way for me and my brothers, there was no computer and internet around. We were hooked since episode 1 and never missed an episode, we would watch all the re-runs and be hyped about every epic moment and cry our eyes out at every tragedy or happy moment. Laughing our asses off at the jokes (Skypiea and Thriller Bark are imo the funniest!) And since then I'm a huge fan, though there were several years I lost touch. I picked up the series again a few months ago and stopped at the beginning of the Wano arc (due to low energy, yk how it is with taking care of the family etc).

And OMG I have so many faves!!! Nami!!! Her arc inspired me so much I took her name as my nickname. For a lot of rl friends, I'm just Nami, sometimes my teachers were confused and asked me if it's my middle name fklsdhfsjdůlkasd!!! She is so caring! Big sis vibes!

Zoro! He is so cool! Do I need to explain this? (also I find his relationship with women really interesting, the guy is so traumatized! And also he would literally die for you!) Devil Child Nico Robin. She is smart, powerful as hell and MORBID and her sense for cute things is just immaculate. The episode when she got to be part of the Strawhats is still one of my favorites. Maybe I'm mistaken but she is the only one that invited herself and not because Luffy told her so. I... okay, I will stop because otherwise, I will write a whole ass essay about her and why she is THE QUEEN of all queens!

Fave arcs: Arlong Park, Loguetown, Alabasta Saga, Sky Island Saga, Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, Summit War Saga And here begins the controversy, ofc I'm not including the Wano arc because I haven't seen it whole yet...But I'm not able to enjoy the after-time-skip arcs. Great animation moments, the story is amazing too, but the pacing is just so bad. So many fillers within the episodes too, Dressrosa was a torture to watch. So if I just judge it by story everything is great! Maybe reading the manga would be the better choice. But I didn't want to miss the great animation.

Okay, the cool monster designs got me: What is Volfoss abt if you don't mind spoiling the game? Does it have a bestiary that tells you about the monsters? Also! How's your day been?

YESSSSS 😈 volfoss is a tactical rpg released only in japan for the ps1, a quick tldr of the story is there are trooper/mercenary (kind of work similarly to the latter, you get letters that give you missions, which can range from kill these burglars -> get rid of these monsters, missing kids and so on. there are also a lot more whimsical quests and also some silly evil ones (havent done the evil route but there are multiple assassination quests)) groups all over the world, and you are in part of one of them. spoilers for like early game stuff (just the start of the first act, and also a vague plot point that is hinted at starting in act 2) under the cut :3

The game starts in Asdenia (one of the big three countries/capitals) with your group, the Silver Fang, being pretty much wiped out by your leader dying. There are pretty much only three of you left, Shalvas (who is the protagonist), Mistos (who is kind of there to help Shalvas early game and also just kind of be the silly guy that Shalvas' straight man (comedy wise) nature bounces off of) and Marica (who goes off on her own after your mentor/leader dies). With the leaders death, the Silver Fang basically lose any popularity/anyone who wants to hire them that they might have had prior, and so the game starts with you going to help out a village in Asdenia that is being attacked by monsters. After that, you get another quest to rescue a girl, and then my best friend Uchida appears <3 hes a info broker basically and is like hey. let me help you get more jobs and over time you do get more because Uchida is the fucking BEST!!

The rest of the game from here on out (this is just the first 3 quests before you're basically set free to do whatever) focuses on taking quests and well. Completing them obviously. There are 5 endings, and the game doesn't let you make dialogue choices (which I like because of how it kind of feels more behind the scenes. You're working WITH Shalvas as a character and influencing him by taking the quests that you want to take instead of directly making choices in dialogue or on missions of what you want him to do. This might be a drawback for some but I really feel like it lets Shalvas be himself and takes a bit of the control out of the players hands), instead the quests influence how it goes. There are 5 types of quests (evil, good, and one for each of the three big countries), and by the end of the first act, it narrows you into one of two paths, which then branch out into the five endings.

Some of my favorite things about it is actually how it handles a lot of topics that most rpgs dont handle well in a really nuanced fashion. There is a big war by the time you hit the last act of the game, which has been ramping up through the game, and it is handled in a very very listening to both sides fashion. The ending I'm on right now has discussions of someone trying to convince another person to help them out in the war, and the other person replies with discussing the value of lives and why the (redacted for spoilers sowwy) people deserve to live more than the other. They also really did good w the female characters in this, Rially is really well written (shes a silly but helpful ally you have), Marica is one of the best women I've seen in any rpg EVER (she has a lot of nuance and there could be a yuri situatuon between her and another woman if you squint a tiny bit), there are women in high positions in government and that's just treated as normal. Disability is also something treated SHOCKINGLY well. One of the villains is missing part of his arm (and has no prosthetic) and it is NEVER brought up or shown as something that he needs to overcome or yk the standard ableist bs. Like he's one of the strongest characters in the game and given a TON of depth. Everyone really is, like this game will make you feel sympathy for characters that other rpgs would have just painted as black and white evil. The protagonists are all AMAZING and the characters are super easy to understand where they are coming from, if not just outright love them. Even the villains get a more morally grey approach than a lot of rpgs would. The writing in general is really good (which is like. not helpful due to there being no english patch and I have machine translated every single line in this game. when i finish the guide it will have summaries and stuff so. if you are interested just wait a bit :) ), the route that I've taken has been super entertaining and dramatic. A lasting theme in the game is the value of life (even if they are an enemy of yours. which is handled very well and do NOT start me on it because it makes me blow upppp) and I think it's a very interesting theme to have due to how as a trooper, you DO have to kill monsters. It treats it better than a lot of rpgs who really only treat the named characters dying as a tragedy but if you kill a bunch of bandits, its completely ok.

To get into gameplay, due to being a game from 2001, it is a bit clunky. But honestly it's pretty easy to pick up (coming from someone who has never played a trpg before) and it's super fun. The gameplay loop doesn't really get boring (esp for a like. 30-50 hour long game. from what i understand from times online) and there's a ton of unique functions (such as a Morgue where you can resurrect enemies that you killed last battle to fight for you for one battle, a Gem system that gives your characters attacks/defense different powers (a red gem gives a fire attack etc and there are many combos) and the faction relationship system (which is partially how endings are decided. You do enough missions for one of the big 3 areas, and they start to like you more and more)).

To get to your bestiary question, yes and no. There is an in game gallery, but unless you can read Japanese (or machine translate), there's not a ton of info there. Here's Rially's page for an example:

As for stats on the characters, there is that info with the physical game (which I do plan on scanning my copies of the map, unit guide, and manual and put them on the internet archive eventually) and just through a LOT of trial and error. The Volfoss Wiki (all in Japanese as well bc theres like. one site discussing this on the English side of things afaik) has a lot of info on stuff as well. I'm definitely trying to gather more info as I play to put into the guide so there IS info like that out there in the world. You can see all the monsters there and here's a link to most of them online (there's only a few of them missing and I know that due to having a lot of it memorized by this point lol). also sneakily dropping a link to the rom here at the end if you do want to play it :3 i can also give a more detailed description of gameplay and stuff if you are interested. also please look at uchida. its important. and also sheala who has a really cool design, i dont think its super often you find a woman just wearing normal armor in games lol. she is also insanely hard to fight (just beat her and came to tumblr to take a break and then. essay unfortunately)

and i'm doing ok! a bit tired but staying distracted with getting this scary long guide (76 whole pages.) closer to completion. or at least like 30% being done lol.

11. Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

I technically am a writer for my job (PhD student) but writing fiction is certainly more of a hobby than anything else. The stuff I write for work is certainly quite different than anything I post here lol

28. Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

Adure on AO3 / @toburnup - I think they're writing is very introspective and realistic; the emotions and interiority of the characters always seem really true to the characters and to the events taking place in the fics. One of my favorite fanfiction authors for sure and I'm definitely super hung up on is your light on? It's very bittersweet and heartbreaking and I can't wait to read the update. (I also LOVE LOVE LOVE throw me one -- I come back to this one all the time <3)

@aidaronan - My favorite is Anywhere, Anytime, but she is the one true voice of the monster fuckers in the ST fandom. Everything she writes is just so fantastic and fun, I love it.

indelicate / @steddielations - I LOVE Trouble Looks Good on You (just saw there's a chapter I haven't read omg) and Dream Boy <3 and they're two of my favorites for sure. She writes the BEST flirting/banter (Trouble Looks Good on You fr fr fr). I haven't read EVERYTHING she's written, but I'm confident I would like it all.

37. Talk about your current wips.

I have FOUR WIPs rn which is UNPRECEDENTED for me. I haven't written fanfiction in ten years and the last time I was in a fandom like this, I only ever wrote one-shots, so the fact that I've even finished multiple multi-chapter fics is honestly amazing to me (while I was taking my doctoral exams????? writing 75 pages of [redacted] for my advisor??? and then also writing over 100,000 words of steddie fanfiction???? crazy of me. unhinged.). Okay, so it's "i can't let go when something's broken" which is almost! done! I'm struggling with the ending and tying everything together, but it's coming!! I promise!! It was only supposed to be the one post, but everyone was really nice and no one wanted to see Steve hurting like that, so. I am powerless to the Steddie gods. Then "it had to be you" which is just so fun. It's a When Harry Met Sally... AU because Steve and Eddie are so Sally/Harry coded, it literally physically hurts me. Steve is Sally!!! He is!!!! I think "it had to be you" has some of the best dialogue/banter I have ever written in my life. Definitely the most fun I've had writing anything ever. Then there's the 10 Things I Hate About You AU which I have big plans for! I actually only intended it to be one post, but people were so nice about it and seemed to like it so. And lastly, "oh my, love is a lie" which is a modern!AU where Steve has been ghosted by Eddie and then re-meets him when Dustin forces Steve to hold a Friendsgiving party at college. LOTS of navigating Steve's abandonment issues and his emotional baggage, which I'm really into rn. Steve angst has me in a chokehold and I love to see him pine from afar. Haven't updated this in soooo long, but I have big plans!!! Lots of stuff to come, I hope.

Mondays Suck

Triggers: office drudgery, bored Rabbit, surly anomalies, Clef being... Clef, teasing the boss for a change.

After a blissful two days off under the Plague Doctor's expert care, I'm back at my desk, facing a mountain of paperwork. Ugh. We're allowed computers and cell phones, yet O5 insist on causing the death of entire forests in the name of record keeping. There's no way we need all this crap. But... a surprisingly squishy orange blob of mercy is squelching his way toward me, carrying a cup of tea... and a small flower arrangement. Judging by the single red rose surrounded by lavender, my dear Doctor was thinking of me.

"Aw, thanks Little Dude. You didn't need to do this, but I appreciate it." I take the gifts, and hug the little gleeful glob. Maybe today is gonna be okay. "Hey, would you tell 049 thank you as well?" A quick squeeze and a nod. I look around... and slip my buddy one of my secret stash of peanut butter cups. Happy gurgles, then everyone's favorite pal heads off. I tackle my reports, tea in hand.

Iris comes in after a while, looking less than happy. Apparently Big Brother is being... his normal self. Which means, picking fights with his guards, despite me trying to explain that this is a bad idea. Yeah... I need to talk to him. Preferably before anyone dies.

"Hey, I just saw 999. He might be helpful. He's still nearby, grab him and meet me at his quarters. If anyone needs a good tickle fight, it's Abel."

"Don't tell me, Abel's misbehaving again?" Clef pops his head in. "Better stock up on candy if you're bringing 999, Abel scares him."

"Dr. Clef. We're Abel's sisters. And Abel in full rampage scares US. Believe us, we know how he is." Iris chimes, annoyed. I grab extra sweets, and we get ready to deal with Abel. Dr. Clef grabs a shotgun and follows. But... no Tickle Monster. Grr. Fine. Time for plan "B" for "Bad Ideas in Site (REDACTED) History".

I'm the first in, and seeing my big brother is just about to do something we'll all regret, I throw a discarded ammo clip at the back of his head. It hits him dead on, but he ignores it.

"Oi! Knock it off, Abel. We know you want to kill something. I get it. But... poor Bob here has a wife and three daughters. He, I imagine, would like to go home to them. Why not let him?"

He's still got Bob by his collar, ready to strike. But he hesitates. He looks Bob in the eye.

"You should be grateful my sisters are here to talk me out of killing you. They are right, you do not deserve death by my hands. Get out of my sight." Abel releases Bob, who does the sensible thing and legs it. Abel then turns to us, still ready to kill.

Okay, Plan "D" for "Dumbass" it is. I open my mouth, and order Clef to get everyone else out. I draw my shock baton, and wait.

"He's gonna kill you, Rabbit."

"Yeah? I'm expendable. Get out, Clef. Take everyone with you. Big Brother and I need to have a chat." Clef nods, then sets his shotgun by my feet. And I'm alone with Abel. He's still got murder in his eyes. More importantly he's still holding a sword. He charges at me, and I dodge. A few more attempts, and then he's really angry. Angry enough to be stupid. He forgot about the shotty. I grab the gun, swing, and knock him across his enclosure. I then fire at his chest, both barrels. This staggers him, little more. But, he stops.

"You... shot... me." He drops to one knee. No normal man would even still be conscious, let alone speaking. Not with two huge holes in his chest.

"You tried to kill everybody. Again. We talked about this."

"Can't... can't.... help..." He starts coughing, blood flying out of his mouth. "I'm... sorry." I toss the empty shotgun to one side, and hold my brother as the life fades from his eyes. "Proud... of... you.., Little Sister."

"Knock it off, we both know you'll be back in 6 months."

"Still... had to... to... say it." He reaches up and musses my hair. A gesture of brotherly affection. Then... he's gone. The MTFs, Clef and Iris come back as I'm crying over his rapidly decaying body. Iris hugs me.

"Rabbit, I'm sorry."

"It's okay, Iris. We know how Big Brother is."

"Young lady... you're under orders to take the afternoon off. Mondays suck in general, but this is a bit extreme. Iris, go take Rabbit, and do something, anything not related to the Foundation for a while. Hell, give her a full makeover or whatever you need to, she's done enough today."

"Dr. Clef, you're babying me. This is pretty par for Abel, as far as records go. Just give me an hour or so and I'm good. I do not qualify for special treatment just because the big meathead adopted me. Did Strelnikof get time off for shooting Abel? Did Fitzsimmons? No? I shouldn't either. I'm even willing to stay after hours, I just want to forget it happened. C'mon, Sis... I need a shower, then we're gonna go bake cookies or some crap. Although... it's kinda tempting to give YOU a makeover, Doc. You think he'd look good in dark eyeliner, maybe hot pink nail polish, Iris? Oh, and I just got this stunning green velvet dress, might fit Cleffy better though."

"Blue would bring out his eyes more. All three of them."

"I'm trying to be a compassionate boss here, and you're mocking me."

"Sorry, Doctor Clef. Trauma response is strong in this one. We're going. So... Iris, the eternal debate... chocolate chip or double chocolate chunk?"

"Double chocolate chunk. Easy."

"And that is why you're my favorite sister. You are a young woman of culture as well. We should, however, set some aside for Doctor Clef, as he's been very helpful. You think two dozen is enough?"
