was having natsume's book of friends vs. matoba's book of enemies* thoughts again while waiting for the subway earlier today as one does and thinking about their default standing at the start of not just the series but also their lives and then throughout

many others have written probably far more coherently about this being a story about different takes on legacy which never ever stops to fascinate me but the way that natsume starts his life born as grandchild of reiko who vanished into obscurity but was immensely powerful and able to make contracts with immensely powerful yokai (often after beating them through either simple friendly games or trickery but never cruelty) and grows up with no real sense of connectedness with family until much later and inherited this collection of contracts that he now takes it upon himself to release them from these contracts as a way to restore the balance :)

and matoba who is born into notoriety into the strongest clan of exorcists (who by definition eradicate yokai) growing up with an identity impossible to extricate from his family and inheriting threats and curses and immense power that the entire exorcist community counts on him to uphold even as they hate him for it on top of inheriting mistrust from human and yokai alike what with the inability to make a contract because of his name alone and inheriting a legacy of violence and cruelty and so has continued to perpetuate it because there seems to be no other viable alternative to maintain the status quo of remaining the head of the strongest exorcist clan which is supposed to be his one (1) job :)))

Who said the Chameleon was surrendering to Kai?- I mean all Kai has is that loincloth, man ain't wearing the pants in this relationship. Lol.

Serious answer: she's the "dominant" one. Kai was captured by her and absolutely under her power, and not just in a literal sense of having been drained and caged; yes, she's smaller than him, but by no means a pushover weakling. I think Kai sees alot of himself in her- both having that sadistic, prideful, and power-hungry personality which lends itself to a mutual attraction; but they aren't, obviously, on equal footing, considering the Chameleon's nature and the nature of their relationship.

Kai, as awful as he is, has nothing on her. She's a different sort of monster entirely (andweadoreherforitabsolutequeen). What I mean is: Kai wants to rule side by side; she wants to rule alone. I think, however, there are these times they make a pretense of equal ground, enjoying snapping back at each other, pushing each other's nerves, a little back and forth (perhaps grinding between, when the tension is high)- but she's always quick to shatter that fascade, the one illusion she won't tolerate; after all, neither of them are deceived, not really.

They do have an account here @/comicctrl but I don’t think it’s active. I did have some initial contact with them last year about some installation problems, but any attempts I’ve made to communicate further have gotten me no response, be it through email or the Facebook group for it. Others on the group have gotten responses more recently than me, so I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve even tried emailing Hiveworks directly but with no luck so far, and I really don’t want to seem rude or overly persistent at this point. I’m not affiliated with Hiveworks though, so that might have been sent to the wrong inbox anyway. The main issue seems to be that, even though I followed the installation tutorial, I cannot log in properly to the CMS control panel. I’m not sure if my webhost (HostGator) has something to do with it, but I’ve seen other comic sites from the group that seem to run the CMS with it just fine, so again I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Maybe I deleted something I shouldn’t have when uninstalling WordPress? If I can’t get this working, is there another CMS for webcomics that’s still supported by its developers? My Google search only gave me defunct ones, as far as I know. I have my own domain and everything, I just need a CMS to put in it! I want to avoid using WordPress again, as I didn’t like it much. Thank you! <3 ——— As for the rest of the project, I’ve rolled back to the vis dev/story drafting phase for the past while, to the project’s benefit I hope. My personal life has gone through some MAJOR changes in the past few months, including moving to a new apartment, so it’s been pretty stressful with trying to get settled in and everything. BUT I’ve been itching to get back into comic stuff as a result, especially with the 7th anniversary of the project on the 19th this month (wow!!!!). Not sure if I’ll have time to make much more of an anniversary post than last year’s, but we’ll see! Playing with the idea of learning a few basic 3D skills so I can make backgrounds and character/prop posing easier, but I’ll decide that when I’ve determined a new launch date for the comic itself and plan accordingly. Currently I’m aiming for either July or November of 2024, but we’ll see. Otherwise I have a mountain of character reference to finish and scenes to write/re-write, and probably the 80th plot plan re-write at this point, so there’s a lot to do! Currently I’m waiting until Art Fight season is over to get cracking on my new workflow, which should hopefully streamline things a bit. You'd think more people would believe me about this. Like, I've met so many young challengers that don't believe me. "I'm not going to take advice from a guy who took over a year to do his league."

Oh my Gods, it absolutely did take me a year and a half! That doesn't matter! I got through it more intact that most people!

Look, it sounds unbelievably dumb at first, but trust me when I say you're going to need to sew your own stuff. (For reference, always be on the ground for that. Don't be in a tree.)

You know, I’m pretty tired of being an ignored canary in a coal mine. Because the amount of stuff I take to my bosses or am just like hey this is weird, why is it like this? And it’s just ignored for months until it creates an absolute mess when people could just communicate and fix it? Too many times to count. So, Moses is a cleric, Solomon is a wizard, Joshua is a paladin, David is a bard, Jesus is a sorcerer, his apostles and Paul are warlocks, Elisha is a druid, Elijah is a monk, Samson is a barbarian, Tahkemonite along with Eleazar and Dodo are fighters, John the Baptist is a ranger, Jacob is a rogue

I'm really cautious about using DnD terms to describe nuanced historical metaphysics like this. DnD's cosmology is a mess. I don't know how it works because the writers don't know how it works. It's very easy for readers to come away with the wrong impression, and tbh it often comes off with this corny-ass "hello fellow kids did you know the Buddha was literally a hecking druid" type energy.

I wanna stress: This is fun to think about, but please don't treat this as meaningful analysis of real-world religions. I wanna demonstrate how quickly these terms break down when you're looking at actual historical metaphysics.

If we wanted to analyze biblical characters with DnD terms, every Charismatic Jewish Holy Man would be classified as a warlock. Moses is not a nebulous intermediary between gods and mortals. The man famously had a covenant. The whole covenant thing is a pretty important part of Judaism. But then again, that brings up problems for what the destruction of the first temple would mean for the classification of Judaism. Does the development of the rabbinical system suddenly turn everyone from warlocks into clerics? Within Judaism, the word of God is the law under-girding the whole of the world, including nature. Does that make every Rabbi a druid?

Jesus certainly wouldn't be a sorcerer, hes just a God. His power isn't hereditary, he is literally God. Calling Christ a sorcerer would be heresy.

Solomon is a wizard. The DnD wizard archetype is quite literally based on the biblical character of Solomon.

Samson is kinda a paladin? I'm not entirely sure what he would be classified as.

The Apostles are tricky, because their classification would probably change as the doctrine developed. Initially they would probably be classified as warlocks who "inherited" the laws and works of the new covenant with God, which is warlock metaphysics. But, several of them were kinda in charge of writing the new laws of the covenant, which I guess would be cleric metaphysics. Several of them also have priestly vows, which is paladin metaphysics.

John the Baptist is the only one on this list who could be considered a DnD Druid. Baptism as a rite probably has non-jewish pre-christian roots. I guess its the closest thing Christian metaphysics has to "nature magic." But my even suggesting that the power of baptism stems from a source other than God would be heresy.
