#I've been using the marker brush lately and i love it a lot

hey i was just curious about how u do the textures on your drawings !! they always look so good and i love the effect, is there a specific kind of texture you use? 😭

Hiiii so um, I actually have a collection of like many many texture files (over 100 lol) from over the years (some free, some i bought, some were shared with me, etc) and this process is kinda easier if you have the bought textures because they come configured to the layer settings that work best.

But the ones I use the most are from True Grit Texture Supply, they aren't free unfortunately and my favorite ones come from a pack (KraftTone, a pack meant for making halftone colors of old comics) where i'd say its not worth it to buy for just the textures But also lately I've been really Into the Kolormarc brushes and textures. The brushes themselves are textured to mimic the look of markers and the Ivory paper texture in the pack i've used on most of my recent pieces.

The pro of these textures are that the files are already set up for you, which with most free textures you will have to fiddle with them yourselves to get them looking right but here is a screenshot of how these files are always set up. They also come with a color correction later that i never use because it washes out the piece (which may be more true to old posters but idc i'd rather not wash my characters and colors out but here's a screenshot anyway).

Another thing I do to add texture for shading is use the Grain shader brushes from tgs, honestly probably my best pack from there. i use those brushes in spots like these. (the cheeks, light shadows, usually pants. and almost always rainbows to make them look less flat. also distress edges). I always CTRL and click layer then make a new layer with a clipping mask of what i want to use these colors in to keep them within the area of shading.

Other thing i do esp with like redraws meant to look like cartoons is I will add a chromatic aberration action + color noise on top. this works best if you merge all your visible layers to a new later then do those actions. Here is the action set i use.

um overall I just really mix and match a lot of these layers and techniques and actions and usually stop once i get something that looks ok. its really easy to over do it sometimes though but still.

Oh and while im at it all the lining and sketching brushes I use are the Rusty Nib pack from TGS also.

Looking at a lot of my older art lately... I think I need to besides studying, also just get back into a few looser brushes I used to use. Maybe that'll be more fun too. I had this marker brush I was obsessed with at the peak of my cablepool days, and I think it's still on my hard drive somewhere. I'm sure I could extract it to Procreate or Clip... it's a Photoshop brush.

But I did a lot of story driven sketches back then... not committing to polishing anything, just good junk sketches with some dialogue or situations... which I wanna do with a few AUs right now specifically.

I love my rigid crisp lineart and crisp colors, but I think I need to just... idk.

I get caught up in what people WANT to see, in a bad way, that I lose sight of having fun with art. I love lineart, I love colors, I love sketches... I love the process more than anything honestly.

I love interacting with people and making them happy, it feeds me, but I should be enjoying the process behind that again... I miss just....drawing and enjoying it.

But above all... I get caught up in having a recognizable Oh that's Kat's stuff style that I think I just bomb all my enjoyment of actually managing to HAVE four or five styles depending on my need or mood lmao I just need to embrace that weird fact about my art honestly.

I need to be having this much fun all the time. I have filled out 1/5 a sketchbook in the past month. That's insane. Sketchbooks take me YEARS. I'm just enjoying learning and indulging lol...

so i draw in paint tool sai idk if this is helpful but here are my brush settings

^this is my favorite pencil to sketch and for lineart

^alternatively, i have this one without texture also for lines. this one is new and i only used it once recently (the one sns drawing that i didn't color) but i did really like it and i might use it more, maybe

for flat coloring i use just standard brushes nothing fancy. Lately I've been also using the marker tool a lot actually. also, i use a few different crayon kinda brushes for texture like these:
