#IN THIS HOUSE WE LOVE TÍA CASITA
Text
For @dandylion94, based on the prompt: “Mirabel’s birthday is coming, and Luisa is determined to make her the perfect birthday cake to make up for all of the birthdays that were forgotten.”
Absolutely love this idea. I hope you enjoy it. Apologies for this taking so long.
Comments are always appreciated.
~~~~~~
What Baking Can Do
It was the 23rd February: a week or so before Mirabel’s birthday.
Not that anyone would know. Mirabel certainly hadn’t mentioned it or added it to the family calendar or even hinted towards any possible gift ideas. A habit she had had since her fifth birthday, and kept after Casita’s rebuild.
She had celebrated one birthday since then. Her sixteenth. Although, it had really been more of a welcome home/return party for Bruno, than anything in honour of Mirabel. In fact, she spent the entire day sewing in her room.
Maybe that’s why, at some point during the early hours of the morning, Dolores was loudly awoken by Luisa deciding:
“I’m baking today. I need you to go shopping for ingredients first thing.”
Casita had barely opened its front doors before Dolores slumped heavily against the wall.
With a yawn, she let her fingers uncurl from the bags holding the collection of ingredients she had purchased from Luisa’s very extensive and poorly written list. The tiles of the house moved quickly, gently catching the bags, gliding them swiftly to the kitchen, as Dolores sleepily followed.
“Where have you been, sis?”
When she looked up, rubbing her eyes, she found Camilo poking his head over the bannister. Shouldn’t he be at school by now?
“Something smells good. Did you go shopping? Did you get anything for me?”
Ah, yes. How could she have forgotten?
She vaguely remembered hearing Camilo’s coughing fits, followed by a long speech to their parents of a sleepless night, while she had been arguing with some townsperson with overpriced eggs. Honestly, if Señor Tobias thinks anyone is going to pay that much for an egg—
She raised an eyebrow at her brother. “I thought you were ‘completely bedridden’ because Tía Julieta hadn’t had time to heal you before she left for work this morning?”
“Yeah, I am,” Camilo nodded. “But something smells good and I wanna know what. What you got there?”
“Nothing you can have because you’re sick.”
“Are they ingredients for lunch? I’m starving.”
“No, they’re ingredients for Luisa.”
“Luisa?” Camilo exclaimed. “What’s Luisa cooking for?”
With another yawn, she pulled Casita’s front doors closed. Shutting out the sunlight gave some relief to her tired eyes, a relief she would rather enjoy in peace. Not that Camilo took the hint.
“It’s our primita’s birthday in a few days,” she answered.
“Huh? I thought the nerd’s birthday was yesterday,” said Camilo. “Wait, we’re actually celebrating that this year?”
Unimpressed and too exhausted to argue, Dolores simply carried on to the kitchen.
She found Luisa preparing the equipment and still flicking through several of her mother’s cooking books. Not that she could blame Luisa for that, Mirabel was difficult to make or buy things for: as she always would pick something to please someone else. And it’s not like there was previous birthday parties to take example menus from.
“You still haven’t picked anything?” Dolores guessed.
“Wrong,” Luisa announced, tossing another recipe book back to its shelf. Said shelf was now messy and unorganised, in a way that Julieta and Mirabel would collapse over when they got home. “I have limited it down. A bit. I know she doesn’t like lemon, coconut, raisins and sultanas—”
“You just made me buy several bags of raisins.” Dolores complained bitterly.
Even Casita clattered its tiles in annoyance, as the one who was now putting away the ingredients.
Her cousin flashed a guilty grin. “Sorry. I offered the few we had to her before school, after you had gone. Got a very confident ‘no’ before she backtracked.”
“Then maybe you shouldn’t have sent me off at the crack of dawn,” Dolores mumbled under her breath. “If she really doesn’t mind, then couldn’t you just bake anything?”
“No! It has to be perfect. We haven’t celebrated her birthday in years, so she’s getting a cake that she will enjoy. And by starting now, I will have perfected the recipe by her birthday.”
Having no argument, the older woman just sighed again. “Fine. Let’s actually decide on a recipe, otherwise you’ll never be finished before school ends. Do you remember what Tía Julieta made for her fifth? Because all of that is an instant no.”
“So no torta de leche then. Might be biased, but I have a good feeling about torta María Luisa. That must be named after a historical figure - she’d be all over that.”
“It’s a safe choice taste-wise. And the history is very Mirabel. Do that then.”
“Or you could make something she’ll actually enjoy eating,” a third voice piped from the doorway.
The pair turned to where Isabela had sauntered in from the doorway. She didn’t say anything more as she began nosying over the various recipe books, flicking the odd page here or there, before stopping and shoving a book towards them with a triumphant grin.
“Torta de manzana?” Dolores read, with an eyebrow raised. “We haven’t had that in years, not since… must have been my gift ceremony. I’m surprised you remembered that.”
Isabela gave a light shrug. “I didn’t. It’s just the first thing I saw that had lots of cinnamon in. Mirabel likes cinnamon.”
“She does?” Dolores inquired.
“She does.” The nature lover affirmed.
“Oh yeah, when Mama makes each of us our specialised focaccia bread, Mirabel’s is always just cinnamon-sugar,” Luisa recalled. She gently smacked her head. “Why didn’t I think of that? Thanks, Bela.”
“Right, well, seeing as you’ve now got a recipe, Isa and I will leave you to it,” Dolores waved, as she guided Isabela back to the door.
Luisa looked blank. “You two aren’t helping?”
Now was Dolores’ turn to look blank, even Isabela looked a little stunned.
“No. You’re a nightmare to be in a kitchen with. You angry-bake.” Dolores said.
“I don’t angry-bake.”
“Wait, so you really want us to help?” She asked, gesturing towards herself and Isabela, the latter in particular. “And you aren’t going to be a nightmare about it?”
“Of course. I could really use your help,” Luisa nodded. “This cake needs to be perfect and we’ve got to be done and tidy everything before school ends. Besides, it’ll get done a lot faster if we work together.”
Looking back, that was the point Dolores should’ve dragged herself and Isabela to the other side of Encanto.
~~~~~~
The trio had a small, simple process going. Dolores would read out the recipe, Isabela would prepare the ingredients and Luisa doing pretty much everything else.
The first part, the apples, which Dolores had envisioned being the more problematic part as Isabela would have a knife, had actually gone by rather successfully. They weren’t perfect slices by any means but the only grumble from Luisa was when Isabela added extra cinnamon to the mix. The anger was soon cooled by the explanation of “Mirabel will like it better.”
“Okay, now we need 1/2 cups of sugar,” Dolores said.
Isabela nodded, scooping the cup into the bag of sugar and dropping it straight into the mixing bowl. Looking a little proud of herself for not spilling as much over the side this time, something she had done for many of the previous ingredients.
“What’s next—”
“What the hell was that?”
The pair turned to Luisa, stood on Isabela’s other side, who was looking down her nose at the bowl.
“The sugar going in the bowl?” Isabela said.
“You just dumped it in.” Luisa responded.
“I put it in the bowl. There’s no official way of putting something in a bowl,” Isabela dismissed.
Luisa blinked. “Take it out and do it again.”
“It’s not going to make a difference. It’s all going to be mixed together anyways.”
“Well then it’s going to taste like shit. And when the rest of our family tries your shit cake and realise it’s shit and they disown you—”
“It’s just sugar, Luisa,” Dolores interrupted. “We can’t take it out of the eggs now anyways, you’re going to have to deal with it.” Luisa went to say something, but Dolores continued, “Why don’t Isa and I switch places for a bit? That way you two can stop arguing.”
Luisa didn’t have a compliant, though Isabela looked offended at being demoted to only reading out the steps. The two swapped and Dolores turned expectantly to Isabela.
“We need 5 tbsp of melted butter,” she announced. “What is a tbsp?”
“A table spoon, you fucking idiot.”
“Luisa, it was a fair question. In fact, go stand in the corner for a minute and calm down,” Dolores said in irate, as she avoided the increasing urge to not toss the butter at her younger cousin. “Is that everything, Isa?”
Isabela nodded. “Yep. For now, anyways. Just needs to be mixed.”
“Okay, you can do that. I’ll clean this up.”
As Dolores went off to find some cleaning supplies, Isabela began mixing.
And mixing. And mixing. And mixing. And mix— why did anyone do this? This was boring as fuck.
It was mixed by now, right? The recipe said something about crumbs next.
Isabela looked unsurely about her.
She glanced over to where Luisa was stood in the corner, who had decided to busy herself by fixing the recipe book shelf a bit.
“It says to add in the crumbs once it’s all mixed, and it is, but I don’t see any crumbs here,” she said. “Luisa? Can you get the crumbs for me?”
“Um, are you giving me orders?” Luisa coughed.
Knowing that it wouldn’t end well if she agreed, Isabela begrudgingly had to to deny that claim. Through gritted teeth, she only just managed to slowly answer, “No, I’m asking for… your… eh, help.. in the kitchen.”
“Then ask properly.”
“Can you… please help…. me with this cake, Luisa?”
“Call me ‘chef’.”
Isabela kicked a cabinet in frustration, only for Casita to smack it right back into her. She winced, and then realising she didn’t really have a choice, gave in.
“Fine. Can you help me with this cake, Chef?”
Finally satisfied, Luisa walked over, setting down a small bowl of cake crumbs - when did she make that? Isabela wasn’t sure, she didn’t really care enough to ask either.
“You’re pouring it at an angle,” Luisa complained, as she glared at Isabela whilst she added in the crumbs.
“That’s how pouring works.” Isabela said in disbelief.
“Its too big an angle. You need to do it at a smaller angle. Or else it will be too lumpy and everyone will choke eating it.”
Again, wanting to avoid an argument, Isabela had to give into Luisa’s ridiculous demands. Isabela tipped the bowl less, rolling her eyes at the fact pouring was now going to take infinitely longer this way.
“What the hell are you doing?” Luisa snapped. “Now it’s not angled enough.”
Isabela tipped the bowl ever so slightly forward.
Luisa slammed her hand against the counter, causing Isabela to drop the bowl in its entirety. “Listen, Isabela, if you want to kill our sister, just use one of your poisonous plants, instead of ruining my cake and kitchen in the process!”
“What?” Isabela was struggling to process. “What are you talking about?”
“You are so fucking shit at cooking you are going to murder a child!”
“I’m pouring cake crumbs into a bowl, Luisa!”
“It’s ‘chef’ to you! And you’re doing it fucking wrong! Cook properly or get the fuck out of my kitchen!”
“Seriously, I can’t believe you think you don’t angry cook. You are completely insane to be in a kitchen with with! I’m leaving.”
“Fine, quit. I don’t care. Just so you know, it was your selfish and lazy ass that couldn't be bothered helping doing one nice thing for my sister! Your only skill and quality is being pretty and the eldest, the latter you aren’t even good at! Camilo is more mature than you are! This is why nobody in this family loves you! I feel sorry for whoever has to share a family with such a bitch-ass motherfucker you are!”
“Bitch, we are fucking related!”
“And it’s why Mama and Papa should have tossed you over the mountains the second you were born!”
“Oh my god, Luisa, what the hell is wrong with you?” Dolores demanded. Having dematerialised and separating the pair before anything violent could happen.
Luisa growled. “It’s ‘chef’! Neither of you are fit to be in my kitchen! Get out!”
Dolores muttered under her breath, but nevertheless did start walking toward the door. Isabela let her cousin guide her out. She was angry herself, and admittedly a little hurt by how brutal Luisa had been, but also found the situation humorous.
Especially as Luisa threw a bag of flour at the wall above them, when they clearly hadn’t left quick enough for Luisa’s liking, which instantly burst and covered everything in the powder.
“Get out of my fucking kitchen! You two will never cook a fucking thing for anyone again!”
~~~~~~
“Isabela! Quit hogging the bathroom, I also need to get the flour out of my hair.” Dolores said as she knocked on the bathroom door for what felt like the millionth time.
It had been almost an hour since the pair were kicked out of the kitchen.
Most of which Isabela had spent in the bathroom. While Dolores had been left outside, unable to do anything without spreading the flour around Casita and having to endure Luisa still screaming in the kitchen.
As if on cue, there was another roar from the kitchen. “COOK!” Luisa screamed, smacking a palm against the stove. “WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG?! IT’S NOT EVEN THAT DIFFICULT, COOK! JUST FUCKING COOK!”
The listener sagged against the door and sighed. She had such a headache.
She did consider dragging Mirabel out of school in the hopes that she might get Luisa to calm down. But, she knew her younger cousin would be stubborn and refuse to abandon her studies for a kitchen argument.
Finally, probably another hour later, the bathroom door opened.
“What were you doing in there? It doesn’t take that long to wash your…” Dolores paused, she eyed her older cousin skeptically. Then softened, “Isabela, were you crying?”
“Of course not. I couldn’t care less what she has to say about me.”
“It’s okay, if you do feel upset about it.”
“Well, I don’t! Have your shower, Dolores.”
Dolores hesitated for a moment. And as much as she wanted to clean her hair and let the running water drown out Luisa and relax herself first, she pulled Isabela into a hug.
“You aren’t only a pretty face, Isabela—”
“Obviously, I’m gorgeous all over,” Isabela scoffed. “You think that’s what I was upset about? Pft, no. I’m talented as all hell. I’m upset because she still seems to think I’m some monster, who would hurt Mirabel given the chance. She doesn’t act that way for anyone else. Just me. Why? What did I do to her?”
“It’s more what you did to Mirabel than Luisa.”
“I know! But I wasn’t the only one who treated her like shit! You don’t see Luisa threatening Abuela.”
“Part of it is just Luisa being angry, you know what she’s like in the kitchen.” Dolores explained, looking up at Isabela. “And you know Luisa has always been protective over your sister, she was the only one who fought against putting Mirabel up for adoption and she was barely five.” She sighed, taking a step back, but Isabela kept hugging. “I know it’s hard for you, but you’ll prove her wrong one day. You do love a challenge.”
There was a mumble of agreement.
Just as they separated and Dolores was going to get her moment of peace, there was a thunder of footsteps.
Recognising who the footsteps belonged to, Dolores turned back around and was ready to disregard whatever the young woman was about to say. Maybe even drag her for her actions.
But Luisa was fully calmed down, smiling. She was carrying two mugs of caffe con leche and one black tea. As if nothing had happened between the trio.
“The cake’s done!” She sang, beaming. “It’s cooling on top of the stove - we can try some in a bit to see if the recipe can be fixed. Thanks for all your help. I made these for you.” She offered the respective mugs to their owners.
Dolores and Isabela looked baffled.
“The fuck?” Isabela muttered. Though she did take her coffee, she did sniff for any traces of poison.
“Do you have anything to say, Luisa?” Dolores demanded, raising an eyebrow.
“About what?”
“About you being completely out of control in the kitchen?”
Luisa looked baffled. “Are you still on about the angry baking thing? I still don’t know what you’re talking about. Sure, I’m passionate, but I wouldn’t say angry.”
Dolores raised her eyebrow even higher. As did Isabela. Under both their gazes, Luisa did seem to falter a bit.
The three of them were all very confident and struggled to swallow their pride in situations, so making one another give in was always difficult. Usually Luisa, not only as the youngest, but also wasn’t as close to either Dolores or Isabela as they were to each other.
“Okay. Even if I still don’t think I was,” Luisa said, earning a harder glare from them both. “I am sorry if I said and/or did anything to make you feel bad. Thank you for trying to put up with me and do this for Mirabel.”
Dolores tutted. “Good, but if you think we are cooking with you again, you are sorely mistaken.”
“Yeah, that makes sense.”
Luisa handed Dolores her tea before heading into her own room, with a promise to cool down further before they met up again to try the cake.
Tea would be the cherry on top of the cake now that she fully had the bathroom to herself. She might even take a long bath, possibly use those new bath salts Mariano had gotten for her recently. If she didn’t, she could easily imagine someone else using them all.
Isabela began heading off to her room, and just as Dolores’ hand enclosed the bathroom door, she heard another set of footsteps come barrelling right by her and into her cousin’s back.
“Hey, Camilo! I haven’t seen you all day—” Isabela started. She was interrupted by Camilo jumping behind her. “Are you okay, primito? You’re looking a little sweaty. Really sweaty and red. Wait, I thought you were just pretending to be sick to avoid that history test, are you really not well?”
“Shush! Please, Isabela! You have to hide me!” He whined.
“Why?”
Camilo sighed, “I was hungry, okay? I hadn’t eaten anything all day! So I went down to the kitchen for a snack. But I couldn’t go in the kitchen until Luisa calmed down. Finally, she did and went to grab a cup of coffee for herself after taking the cake from the stove, so I went in.” He swallowed, glancing around. “And, well, I ate the cake Luisa had made. The entire thing. Fresh from the stove. There’s nothing left.”
Dolores groaned in frustration and sagged against the door. Looks like she wouldn’t be relaxing today.
Jealousy
{A Butterly and a Cub Series}
Antonio never really had to share Mirabel’s attention before.
Antonio was a little… upset, if he was to be honest. It felt like everyone wanted Mirabel’s attention these days. She was almost always being called away by someone.
And it’s fine, y’know, cause it happened before too. With the townspeople or when they were playing with the kids that weren’t surrounding Camilo to see his gift in action. But…
Now the entire family is doing it too. Whenever Mirabel goes to play with him, “Mirabel, Mirabel!” Camilo and Luisa shout and drag her away.
“Mirabel, Mirabel,” can be heard from Abuela and Tío Bruno as she and Antonio are about to get to the best part of the story.
Mirabel, mirabel, miraaaaabbbbeeeeeeellll. From her parents to his to Dolores to Isabella and she’s right there but not!
All he wants is to play with his Mira again. Mama and Papa try but they don’t do the voices right or follow all the rules and it’s not fair! He thought that they were super close, so close that they’d always be together!
But it’s okay! Really! Mirabel always wanted everyone to be together and talk and it’s okay cause it’s all fine-
‘What’s wrong, Cub?’ Hiro spoke up. Okay, so maybe it’s not and he’s upset.
”Nothing! I just… I want Mirabel to spend as much time with me as she used to.” The other animals crowd around. “And… and I love that our familia is spending more time with her…”
‘But?’
“Where were they before?” He cries out. “Where were they before Casita fell and everyone other then Tío and Tía and I were ignoring her? When my Mira was angry or sad or hurt? What about the stories she told me when Mama forgot she promised because she had to do sooooo much!”
“What about when I’d fall and get hurt how Mirabel would calm me down and get me an arepa? She's been there for so much! And…” He can't remember when he started crying but he was now. “And what if she leaves me all alone? What if she decides she likes spending her time with them 'cause they’re older!”
“Tonito.” Arms wrap around him. It's a familiar voice and weight. He calls out ‘Mira.’ She hugs him until his crying stops and the animals join in.
Once he's no longer sobbing, she asks if he can look at her. He doesn't want to and she waits until he's ready.
“Antonio.” She’s calm as she states his name. Her voice is soothing and he almost immediately relaxes into her arms. “I would never leave you. Hey hey hey,” She quickly gets out when he starts looking away. “I'm not lying. I swear it to you.”
Mira never breaks her promises. She never has. At least, not as far as he knows.
“Things have been different now, I know, but we need to work with it. We've all got a lot on our plates.” He knows. He does! Antonio just can't help the bad feelings about it. “But that doesn't mean I shouldn't have spent some more time with you?”
“What? Mirabel no! You keep getting called off and have so much to do-” He doesn't even know what he says next but Mirabel lets him continue on.
“Thats still not an excuse Tonito. I should have said no and spent some time with you.” She smiles gently at him, looking up Antonio can still sense she’s hiding something. “We spent a lot of time together and to have it suddenly stop? It must have been jarring. To see me spend it all that time with others must have hurt. I'm sorry.” Tears start coming out again.
She holds him until he's done. The animals have all gathered around and some even started nuzzling them.
“How about, the rest of today we spend playing together, huh?” Mirabel asks and he nods. He’d really like that. “Well then, I know this fantastic tree house bedroom we can play in?” He giggles.
They play lots of games and Mirabel reads him three stories, THREE, when she tucks him in that night.
———-
After she leaves Antonio, Dolores corners her. It's fine. Mirabel knew it was coming.
“Is that how you felt?” Her cousin asks.
“Yes.” There isn't anything else she can say. Not yet at least. But her ceremony still haunts her. Her sisters, her cousins all went from spending every day playing with her or taking her with them to avoiding her like a plague did hurt.
It hurt a lot.
It made her feel horrible. As if she had done something wrong. Seeing them with the villagers or each other and laughing but pushing her away? She couldn't help it. She spent so much time trying to be better- to fix herself.
She won't be the one to make Antonio feel that way. Not if she can help it.
“Mirabel…” Dolores whispers. “I’m sorry.” Unlike Antonio, she doesn't cry. She does however flash her cousin a grin and tell her it's okay. Her cousin leaves and Casita closes the door behind.
“Buenas noches, Casita.” She calls out and hears the tiles tap out a response.
Camilo got up on Clyde, morphing into José to get up on the 6ft (at shoulder) giant and still needed a lift and for Clyde to kneel. Bruno and Mirabel handed him two of the three kids. Bruno would just have the third child ride on his shoulders. Mirabel (and Camilo and Bruno) waved goodbye to Casita, and Casita moved its tiles to a magical tune, waving goodbye in its own way. Again, the stranger was stunned, but Mirabel took her by the hand and started singing about La Familia Madrigal as they headed towards the makeshift shelters.
"This is our home,
we've got every generation!
So full of music,
A rhythm of its own design!
This is my family,
A perfect constellation,
And everyone gets to shine!
Whoa,
But let's be clear, Abuela runs this show, whoa-"
"So I've noticed," quipped the stranger.
"She lead us here so many years ago, whoa,
And every year our family blessings grow!
There's just a lot you've simply got to know, so..."
Mirabel grabbed the stranger and twirled her about, and on cue members of la familia Madrigal came out of the house for their tasks for the day...
"Welcome to the Family Madrigal,
The home of the Family Madrigal!
Where all the people are fantastical and magical!
I'm part of family Madrigal,"
"OK OK I met Abuela, Louisa, Bruno, Camilo, and Antonio... whose who's kid??"
"I'll tell yah!
My tía Pepa
Her mood affects the weather
When she's unhappy
The temperature gets weird"
Mirabel grabbed Bruno by the hands...
"My tío Bruno-"
"We don't-" the villagers nearly finished their practically rehearsed line.
"We DO talk about Bruno!" Mirabel stated defiantly. Bringing Bruno over to the stranger for a proper introduction...
"My tío Bruno sees the future,
We're so glad you're here..." Mirabel gave Bruno a quick hug
"Oh! And that's my mom,
Julieta, here's her deal
The truth is
She can heal you with a meal
Her recipes are remedies for real!
If you're impressed
Imagine how I feel!
Welcome to the Family Madrigal
The home of the Family Madrigal!
I know it sounds a bit fantastical and magical
But I'm part of Family Madrigal-"
"So Pepa, Bruno, and Julieta are siblings?" Inquired the stranger.
"Triplets, infact," Bruno chimed in.
"Two guys fell in love with Family Madrigral," Mirabel continued, "And now they're part of Family Madrigal...
"So yeah, Tío Félix married Pepa,
And my dad married Julieta,
That's how Abuela became an Abuela Madrigal!"
"Okay, a grandmother, three main children, two spouses. I think I've got it, tell me who the grandkids are-"
"Time for a grandkid round up!
Cousin Dolores can hear a pin drop
Camilo shapeshifts
Antonio speaks to animals,
My older sisters,
Isabela and Louisa!
Isabela grows fauna,
Louisa is super strong!
That's life in the Family Madrigal,
Now you know Family Madrigal!
Where all the people are fantastical and magical,
And I'm Mirabel Madrigal!"
Mirabel ended her song, introducing herself.
"Well, what's your power?"
"I restored the Encanto when the candle burned out." Mirabel said with pride.
"I have questions, but I'm still piecing together whose who," laughed the stranger.
During Mirabel's singing, they had made it nearly all the way to where the town ended and where the makeshift housing and tents began.
"It's okay! You'll figure it out!" Called out Camilo from atop Clyde.
They wandered around, helping where they could whilst trying to find the three kids' families. By the end of the day, they had found two of the three kids' parents. Without her playmates, she was getting upset.
"Camilo, you still good up there?" Called out the stranger.
"To be honest, feeling a little saddle sore," Camilo answered, "and our guest is a bit upset."
"Aw, hand her on down," Bruno reached up for the kid.
She was pretty young, between 4 or 5 years old.
"Probably tuckered out," the strange woman commented, helping Camilo down off Clyde.
"Tired and hungry, I bet," Mirabel chimed in.
"I miss my mom," the little girl piped up, "and my brother and sister."
For a split second, Bruno could see the stranger stiffen. He could see the same exhaustion he used to see in the mirror written into her face: missing family.
All in a split second, and her expression changed.
"Well, do you want to stay with me tonight?" The stranger asked the little girl.
"I can't remember everyone's faces from last night, but I was always near my wagon. Maybe they'll spot it or Clyde and come get you," the stranger reasoned.
"Although...," she continued, "did you enjoy playing with the animals and Antonio?"
The little girl bobbed her head in affirmation.
"Well, here's an idea. I can have Clyde move my wagon up near la Casa Madrigal so you can play and have attention, yet my wagon will still be visible. Would that work for you guys?" She looked at Mirabel.
"I'll ask Abuela, I don't see why not," Mirabel looked at Bruno, but he wasn't certain what his mother would say.
"You can ride Clyde back, tell him if I can bring the wagon around, and he'll find his way back to me," the stranger suggested.
Mirabel looked at the horse excitedly, "can you talk to animals, too?"
"We get our points across," she answered in a vagueness that was maddening.
"We've never had someone else who had a gift here. Outside the family that is," Mirabel said in such excitement, "the entire Encanto!"
Bruno watched the stranger closely as a mischievous grin spread across her lips.
"You two take our guest here up to Casita, see what's going on," Bruno urged his niece and nephew, "and I'll entertain our mysterious guest here who hasn't even told us her name."
"Yes, yes, in due time. Do you guys need help getting up?"
"Yes," Camilo answered before Mirabel had a chance to try.
There's a lot of things about Encanto that make me emotional, but by far, Casita is the character that made me cry. Casita loves its inhabitants, its family, as much as any of the human characters do. She helps them, often without being asked, plays with the children, shows off for the townsfolk, and even treats the kids how the adults might, such as knocking Camilo for misbehaving or worrying about Mirabel going into the places where it can't help. Casita has such a fun personality, she's such a genuinely enjoyable character in the movie, and adds so much to the film without ever having a single spoken line. She's so playful and kind and cares so much so deeply about a lot for a living house lol
When she's falling and breaking and literally coming down, Casitas only priority besides helping Mirabel get the candle is protecting the Madrigals from harm. It softens Camilo and Isabela's falls before throwing them all out and letting the damage come down in front of the door so they can't come back in. 100%, I believe that it purposely weakened the wall Bruno smashes through so he could escape, wanting every single Madrigal to be safe. She knows that Mirabel wants the candle for a good reason, but the moment she has it, Casita immediately rushes to shield Mirabel from harm. If things started to go south before Mirabel could grab the candle, there is no doubt that Casita would have forced her to leave it and thrown her out to protect her even if the complete loss of it meant that Casita really could never return. AND THEN, in its actual final moments, Casita fucking waves goodbye to Mirabel and the other Madrigals.
Casita falling apart doesn't just feel like a house coming down, you really are watching another living member of the Madrigal family crumble down to nothing but broken bricks and chips of plaster. It feels so incredibly real and you get to panic for Casita as well as the Madrigals because you aren't just watching a house fall, you're watching another living being straight up die. She not only dies, but she uses the very last bit of her strength to say GOODBYE before she does and it makes me bawl my eyes out
God and when it comes back and she's so incredibly happy. She's singing! She's making music! She's pulling her family back inside as fast as it can and celebrating alongside them!! It missed them. Casita even sets up the photo to be taken and includes itself in it!! She's so fucking happy to be back and for everyone to be home and it's so CUTE, Casita is so precious to me
I love all of the Madrigals, but Casita is definitely my absolute favorite of them all. She's one of the best living object characters I've ever seen. She was created to protect the Madrigal family and does everything in her power to do so, no matter how big or small the danger might be
Por amor al arte (Julieta x Fem!Reader) part 15
Tumblr media
a/n: not gonna lie...this one’s chaotic.
part1 < > next
"Julieta, get away from the stove!"
The older woman jumped up and turned to see you running into the kitchen, a giggling Eliza in your arms, and half the family behind you. She barely had time to do what you said and managed to move in time before you practically lunged at her, pushing her a bit but quickly wrapping an arm around her waist.
"W-what's going on?" she asked, flushed at your closeness.
"I win!" you said proudly, causing the younger ones to groan
"That's not fair!" Mirabel crossed her arms "That's why we don't use mom as a goal!"
"Yes! Y/N will always have an advantage if tía Julieta is the goal” Camilo rolled his eyes “She will move wherever you tell her to give you an advantage”
"Oye! I just told her to get off the stove so we don't get burned!" you defended yourself “besides, I was already winning anyway”
"Yes, because you cheated and ran ahead of time" Isabela said with a frown.
“Nah-ah! Pepa said three and I ran, it's not my fault that you didn't react quickly” you said
"Mom!" Mirabel looked at her mother
Julieta just blinked in confusion. You and Karim had been coming more and more often to Casita and she couldn't be more grateful for your presence. Your brother was an angel and all the children adored him, which gave her and Pepa some time to rest from their maternal duties, although it was no use if her sister stole your daughter as soon as you set foot in the house (Félix had joked about giving Pepa another baby…he had gotten zapped).
And of course, she loved the fact that she could see you almost every day. Not that she was going to admit it out loud, but at this point, she could hardly keep denying herself that her feelings for you had changed. You just made her feel safe, loved, and a little younger. Even her mother had commented on how radiant she looked lately and the brunette knew it was because she got to spend time with you. You had changed her life.
"Mom!" Mirabel said again, snapping her out of her thoughts "Tell Y/N that she can't cheat!"
"Julieta!" you said, mocking Mirabel "Tell your daughter that I did NOT cheat and that she must learn to lose"
“I…I don't even know what's going on” she replied
"Your little rascals challenged me to a race through all the house three times and then to the kitchen, I won and now they don't want to accept it and want to accuse me of false cheating!" you explained
"It's because you cheated!" Camilo said
"I ran with a baby in my arms, so I had to be more careful and you still have the nerve to say I cheated?!" you asked, pretending to be outraged "It's not my fault you guys are slow."
"She's right" Karim finally intervened "As a judge, I saw that everything was legal here"
"You don't count because you're her brother" Isabela rolled her eyes
"It was you who appointed me as judge, princess" your brother reminded her, making the girl blush
"Pepa, you counted, tell me if I cheated" you said to the redhead who was looking at everyone amused
"Well no-"
"Mami" Antonio begged, interrupting his mother
"Oye! Making the puppy face isn’t fair!" you said
"Eso Antonio!" Camilo cheered
"Yes!" Mirabel and Isabela high five
"Now that I think about it" Pepa said, too weak to fight her little angel "I think maybe you did chea-"
"If you tell the truth, you can dress Eliza as a duckie" you interrupted her
"DEAL!" the woman said, approaching you "No, there was definitely no cheating here"
“Noooooo! You can’t use Eliza!" Mirabel groaned "No one beats Eliza"
You laughed as you passed your daughter to Pepa, who immediately made a rainbow appear over her head, causing the baby to clap excitedly. Camilo, Isabela, and Mirabel grunted while Antonio shrugged and said that he had tried. Luisa and Dolores simply rolled their eyes at their siblings' drama. Julieta looked at them all before something clicked on her head.
"Okay, now what did you bet?" she asked you
Betting had become commonplace in that house ever since you and your brother started spending more time there. It was innocent and fun, nothing really serious, but the kids loved it because they could rarely beat you or Karim and it made them work together to win. It was adorable if she was honest.
Sometimes the adults would also participate. Pepa usually acted as a judge while Bruno and Felix teamed up with each other or with Karim, depending on the bet. Even Alma had participated a few times, but since she always won easily, she had decided to just be a bystander (though sometimes the kids would try to recruit her when they were on an especially long losing streak). Only Julieta had been left out, but not by her own will.
The children had decided that it was unfair to let her participate because as a judge, she was partial (according to them) and she would always let you win, while as a contestant, she would join you, and then it was 1000% sure that you would win. So they simply used her as a mediator or, in this case, the goal. She didn't care, she was perfectly happy seeing her family bonding like this.
"All their desserts belong to me today" you said with a triumphant smile
"Noooooo" Camilo lamented
"Oh, so you're lucky" Julieta told you, matching your smile "I made alfajores"
"WHAT?!" The children shouted in unison
"YES!" You jumped and hugged her tightly "Agradecida with the one above"
"That's not fair!" Mirabel pouted.
“Nooooo, my food!! Mom, I'm going to starve and it will be Y/N's fault!" Camilo said, looking at Pepa pleadingly.
"Then you should have thought better before you bet your dessert" the redhead replied without looking at him, too busy making funny faces at Eliza to make her laugh.
"Alright, enough of all the drama" Alma said, walking into the kitchen "All of you, wash up for dinner"
The Madrigal grandchildren complained a bit but filed out anyway. Perhaps she was no longer the same strict woman as before, but Alma Madrigal continued to command undeniable respect. The old lady smiled a little as she walked past her middle daughter and pinched your baby's cheek.
"It's always a pleasure having you here for dinner, Y/N" she told you smiling, you could hear the mockery in her voice
"It's always a pleasure to steal your food- I mean! It is a pleasure to share food with your family” you joked back.
The older woman laughed and headed for the dining room, followed by Karim, who offered to help set the table, and Pepa, who was already making a mental list of all the costumes she wanted to try on Eliza. Only you and Julieta were left in the kitchen.
"You cheated, didn't you?" she asked you knowingly smiling
"Excuse me? You offend me, ma’am” you replied, putting a hand on your chest “I thought you knew me well, Juli…of course I cheated, there was dessert involved!”
You two laughed and the older woman couldn't help but wrap her arms around your waist, pulling you a little closer. This was another thing that had become habitual between you. Hugs were the daily bread for you and although deep inside she was burning with the desire to kiss your lips, she could live with this. You just looked at her, getting lost in her beautiful chocolate eyes and gently brushing a lock of hair from her face.
"You do know that I heard the bet, right?" she told you
"What?"
"I heard when Camilo challenged you, it's not that he was very silent" she explained
“You knew and yet you pretended not to?” you asked
"I knew and that's why I made alfajores" she corrected you "I had faith that you would win" she winked at you
"Julieta Madrigal, you are an evil woman" you laughed "and I love you for that"
The breath caught in Julieta's throat at your words and her cheeks burned as you cupped her face and pressed a firm kiss to her cheek. Unlike the kisses you usually gave her, this one was too close to her lips, right at the corner of her mouth. The older woman couldn't tell if you were aware of what you had done, the fire you had lit in her, but the feeling was both too much and not enough.
When you pulled away, looking at her so innocently, her insides churned and her heart dropped for a moment. She had to force herself to let go of your hips and pull away from you because she didn't think she was strong enough not to kiss you right there.
"And now that?" Camilo asked, sitting down on the soft grass.
After Luisa and Mirabel spent time with you, they began to see you with different eyes and after all those afternoons in which you played with them and saw firsthand how happy their mother looked when you were around, they knew that Isabela was right. You were the best and probably the only option for her. And they knew that even if it hurt, Agustín would have wanted everyone to move on and for Julieta to be happy.
It was easier to plan something when they had 6 brains together (well, Antonio didn't really understand much, but he was happy to be included anyway). All the Madrigal grandchildren had decided to use Isabela's room as a “base of operations” as Camilo and Mirabel liked to call it. Mainly because it was big enough so that they could talk without being heard from the outside and because unlike Antonio's, there were no animals or loud noises here to hinder Dolores' hearing, who was always on the lookout for someone coming.
"Well, we already tried the dinner" Luisa said
"And it wasn't very effective" Isabela added
"Although I think the problem is Y/N" Dolores intervened "tía Julieta was definitely blushing and her breathing quickened every time Y/N touched her hand when asking for the salt"
"You should have let me wrap them with my vines." Isabela rolled her eyes.
"We have to make them fall in love, not beg for their lives" Mirabel scolded her
“Pablo gave Rosita a letter” Antonio said, making the older ones look at him “Now they're holding hands” the boy shrugged.
"Toñito, that's-"
"Perfect!" Camilo jumped "I have an idea"
“Camilo” Dolores warned him
"No, no, no. It's good, you'll see!" he promised and ran out of the room
"He's going to screw up" Mirabel said, Dolores and Isabela nodded solemnly.
"...If mom gets mad, I was never with you guys tonight" Luisa commented
"Tía!"
Julieta jumped a little when her oldest nephew entered the kitchen. She had been lost in her thoughts, daydreaming about you and missing you even though you had been gone for barely an hour.
"There are no leftovers for you, Milo" she told him from the sink "your mom said you weren't allowed to eat after 10"
"Okay, that's not what I'm here for anyway."
The woman frowned and turned fully to him. Camilo Madrigal wasn't in the kitchen after dinner to ask for leftovers? Not even to beg for the few alfajores that were left? (at the end, you had given two to each child). For a moment, Julieta worried that the boy was sick.
"Are you feeling alright, camaleoncito?" she asked
"Yes, tía" he laughed, "but maybe you can do your favorite nephew a favor and win me a bet."
"I thought the betting was over for today" she raised her eyebrow
“With Y/N yes, but not those that are OVER Y/N”
"What?"
“There is no time for explanations, tía. This is the plan” he said, approaching her conspiratorially. Maybe it was stupid to get so close to danger, but he needed to take her by surprise in case he needed a quick exit “I need you to stay locked in your room tomorrow while I go to town shapeshifted into you and tell Y/N that you love her, then I bring her here and Toñito distracts her, then you can leave your room and voila! New aunt for Camilo, Camilo wins the bet. I was going to use the letter idea, but this seems easier and faster. Excellent plan? Excellent plan!”
Julieta froze in her place for a moment before grabbing her nephew's arm to keep him from slipping away. She looked into his eyes and didn't know what scared her more: to see that despite his mocking tone, there was no lie in them or that deep, deep down she felt relief at the idea that her family knew and she didn’t have to hide it more. But the rational part of her brain quickly took control again and she frowned. A clear message sounded in her mind: deny everything!
"Why would you do that?" she asked softly
"Because you like her?"
"That's not true" she sighed and released the boy "Besides, she's too young for me, leoncito"
"AND?"
“She could be my daughter”
"But she's not" he smiled mischievously "termínala de criar, tía (finish raising her)"
There was a deathly silence as Julieta felt her face burn with embarrassment. And when she looked at her nephew, the boy saw his life flash before his eyes.
"Mom!!!"
Pepa turned quickly, looking confused as her eldest son ran towards her like a soul running from the devil. What had he done now?
"Mamita, help!" the boy said, hiding behind the woman
"What's wrong, Milo?"
The teenager was about to speak when Julieta's angry voice echoed from the kitchen.
“CAMILO MADRIGAL, COME BACK HERE RIGHT NOW!”
“What did you do?!” Pepa looked at her son with fear.
"I made a mistake"
The woman took a breath and tried to keep the gray clouds above them from getting bigger. This was bad. Julieta hardly ever got mad, but when she did, it was best not to get in her way. Whatever her son had done, he must have crossed a line. Now, she would defend her children tooth and nail against anything! But if she and Bruno had learned anything since they were little, it was that no one could beat a furious Julieta Madrigal. Besides, Camilo probably deserved the punishment.
"Don't worry, mijo" she smiled at him, grabbing him by the shoulders "I got this"
Camilo sighed in relief…until his mother's grip tightened, practically digging her fingernails into his skin. Pepa felt bad for doing this to her son, but here it was survival of the fittest.
“I GOT HIM, JULI!!” she yelled and the boy opened his eyes wide
"BETRAYAL!!"
"Better you than me, mijo, better you than me"
Camilo swallowed hard when he saw his pissed-off aunt striding up to him. Shit.
Mirabel quickly closed the door behind her, looking at her cousins and sisters with wide eyes.
“Camilo is forbidden to make plans from now on” she said.
Dolores nodded solemnly, hugging Antonio while Luisa and Isabela looked at each other with concern. Well, there goes one of their cousins. Rest in peace, Camilo Madrigal.
Oh, how capricious is life and how powerful is envy that blackens hearts. While you and your daughter slept peacefully, several houses away, Daniel's family thought it was time to pay you a visit.
Prologue:
A fic for @hotdiggitydammit, Unedited, 1385 words
Tw: Death
Pepa remembered watching Félix slowly pass away in their bed, as Julieta gently patted her back. She was saying something to her, but Pepa couldn't hear a single thing. Her eyes wouldn't leave her husband as his hand grew cold in her, no longer holding on. Her own tears mixed with the rain.
Julieta silently hugged her sibling, as the wind started to pick up inside the room. Félix had sadly passed away of old age, and while it did affect the rest of the family, Pepa felt like a huge part of her was just ripped away. She suddenly just felt cold, all her warmth leaving with him as she wished to hear his voice one more time, at least just once more.
Encanto hasn’t seen a hint of sun since then, and yes, they knew she needed time to grief. But their crops couldn’t grow without sunlight, and only one was actually brave enough to bring it up to Alma.
“We understand your loss. But our crops can’t grow without some sun, is there anyway you can..” The farmer couldn’t meet eyes with Alma, as her eyes narrowed. He shrugged, most expecting her to catch his drift.
Alma raised a brow at him, “Is that it?” Her voice was cold and hard as she spoke to him, catching him by surprise a bit.
“Well, Yeah- I-”
Alma turned away from him, heading back inside Casita ,where the storm was much worse inside. “Then goodbye.” She said, leaving the farmer to just stand there before he let out a small groan and walked off.
Pepa’s cries could be heard throughout the whole house, making Alma’s heart break in two. She could sympathize with her daughter, having also lost the love of her life but they handled it in two different ways. While Alma cared deeply for Pepa, she didn’t know how to comfort her in any way as she immediately built up walls instead of letting it all out. So she just left her alone, letting her two other kids, and grandkids to try and help her through this time.
Nothing made Pepa feel whole though, not even her three loving kids. It just made Pepa want to break down even more once she saw them, so they were left with just their Tía and Tío to take care of them in the meantime. So, even though they all hated it, they had slowly let Pepa be. Maybe she just needed a bit of alone time to collect and process her feelings. They didn't see Pepa for a while after that, her room door burning anyone who dared to touch it.
She couldn’t force herself to go to his funeral as the storm only got worse. Félix wasn’t there to comfort her all of those times before.
Everyone was worried about her, but nothing they did worked. This caused chores, and keeping up with Casita being forgotten by mostly everyone besides Alma, and she was just one old woman.
So that’s where you came in. Alma knew your Abuela, and heard news of you looking for a job of some kind. So, Alma reached out to you about helping around Casita as some type of Maid. She even offered your own room for you. You agreed, needing the money and it was a free room.
You never truly saw Pepa, but understood and kept your distance for awhile. That was until it was just you two in the house, everyone else out doing their own chores again. You were just dusting around Casita, until you heard Pepa’s cries once again.
Your heart hurt listening to them, and tried to ignore it like normal but something felt different this time. You suddenly couldn’t ignore them anymore, and while you did hesitate, you headed over to Pepa’s room. The door glowed a bit as you stared at it, biting the inside of your cheek as you decided if you should leave her be or not.
Taking in a deep breath, you placed your hand on the doorknob. You yelped and immediately pulled away after feeling a sharp pain. You murmured out a few curses as you saw the burn, but you quickly reminded yourself why you were there. You took in a deep breath before swinging the door open, ignoring how the pain increased.
You suddenly bursting in startled Pepa, causing a lightning bolt to hit you. You forced your mouth shut, pushing down any pain you felt at these quick moments before walking[stumbling] over to her. Her eyes widened as she stared at you, expecting you to be angry or at least fearful of her because you were just hit with lightning. But you just nervously smiled at her as you quietly asked, "Hey are you okay?" But before she could even respond, you awkwardly laughed. "Uh, ¡Lo siento! That's probably a stupid question-- It's clear you aren't okay. I don't know why I asked..!"
Pepa wiped away her tears, as you continued on, "But, uh, what I meant was-- Do you maybe wanna talk about it? Or, no. I am a stranger to you, and I wouldn't exactly wanna talk about my problems to a stranger either-- After all, they could use it against you and all." You rubbed the back of your neck, "N-NOT That I would use this against you, of course! I was just saying…"
What made you stop talking was the small laugh you got from the girl. Your face suddenly felt hot, as you got embarrassed. You aren't exactly good at comforting crying people, and despite the situation, pretty women made you nervous. "Lo siento…" You mumbled, before standing up again. "I'll leave you alone now.."
But much to your surprise, she gently grabbed your arm. "No, you're fine." Pepa smiled at you, as you sat back down. It's been awhile since Pepa has actually talked to someone, the last time she did was Camilo trying to calm her down and failing. "I'm sorry for the cloud." Pepa tried to shoo it away, muttering clear skies like she has been doing for the past few weeks.
You shook your head, awkwardly patting her back, wincing as you used your inquired hand. "You don't have to feel sorry about it. It's connected to your emotions after all." You said, "It's like saying you're sorry for feeling sad..! You should never be sorry about that."
It’s been awhile since someone had said that to her. Félix was the last person to tell her that, and while everyone was now starting to deal with it, no one really said it. So to hear someone besides Félix tell her that, it made her feel weird. “Even so- You still got struck by lightning because of me.”
“Only because I scared you.” You grimaced a bit, “Probably should have knocked first.”
Now that Pepa thought about it, you shouldn’t have been able to really enter without…Pepa’s eyes narrowed as she looked at your hands. She let out a small gasp as she noticed the 3rd degree burn on your hand.
Pepa gently grabbed your inquired hand in hers, as she carefully scanned it. “I’m so sorry. I forget how much it burns when Casita does that.” She apologized, wincing at how painful it looked but much to her surprise, it seemed like you didn’t care that much.
You just smiled at her, “It’s fine. It actually doesn’t hurt that much!” That was a lie, it hurt like the sun but that would make her feel worse. “Plus- I really should have knocked-- So it’s my fault.”
It seems she didn’t buy the lie, as she pulled you up and left her room for the first time in weeks. It surprised Julieta to see Pepa forcing you to eat one of her apera’s, noticing the 3rd degree burn covering your hand disappear within a few seconds later.
A gentle smile graced Julieta’s lips as she watched Pepa finally smile a bit more again talking to you. The cloudy skies seemed to clear, at least a bit, as some sunlight filtered through. The villagers quickly noticed, and clapped.
But Pepa ignored it all, just enjoying talking to you.
You really should have ignored her cries, and maybe you wouldn’t have been placed into this situation.
Mi Princesa
Hiii so this is part one of my Camilo love story!
Tumblr media
They’re aged up a couple of years and this takes place after the ending of the movie so everything is back to normal!
Let me know what you think, heart and comment on the story! I already have the next couple parts all done and ready but I wanna make sure y’all like it before I post the whole thing and it flops! It’s part one is a little short but the next part will be longer!
Also I don’t speak spanish very well at all and I am learning. I’ve had some friends help me with the spanish in the story but if something is wrong, I do apologize!
Life in the Encanto was peaceful and fun. My familia came here fifty years ago with Señora Madrigal when my Abuela’s village was burned to the ground. Now fifty years later, my Mama owned a small bakery in town. My little sister, Sofia, and I work there with her, lately however we’ve been working there for her. I grew up with the Madrigal teenagers, Mirabel and Camilo. Mirabel and i were best friends, however Camilo and I never saw eye to eye. He would use his gift to mess with me constantly. He was more annoying than anything else but sometimes he could be just plain mean. “Gabi!?” I heard from the front of the shop. I smiled at the voice and went out to greet it. “Mirabel!” I giggled, hugging the curly haired girl. “Buenos Dias!” I greeted. “Guess what!” Mirabel nearly shouted. “What?” “Dolores wants you to make her wedding cake!” My eyes must have been the size of dinner plates, “What about Señora Julietta?” “Mama is trying to take it easy. She only trusts you to make it!” “Oh this is gonna be so exciting!” “Could you come up to the house now to take the order?” She asked, a glint of hopefulness in her eyes. “Of course! Uno momento!” I dashed into the kitchen and took off my apron. “Sof! I’m gonna run up to La Casita! Dolores wants me to make her wedding cake!” “No way!” Sofia said. “I know! Can you watch the front?” “Si! Go!” I smiled at her. Sofia took after our mom with her tan skin and long black curly hair. Her eyes were brown with golden spots. She had just turned sixteen and started working at the bakery with me and Mama. Before I left the kitchen, I checked myself in the mirror. I had streaks of flour all over my face. Luckily I was able to rub it off. I took a deep breath and smiled at myself. I took after our Papa. My skin was lighter and my hair was straight, light brown, and had blond highlights from the sun. My eyes were bright green and I had light freckles over my nose and cheeks. “Alright Mirabel! Vámonos!” Mirabel grabbed my hand and practically dragged me through town. We talked about the wedding which was six months away and my birthday which was in two weeks. “I’m so excited! I’m almost done with your present!” Mirabel said. “I can’t wait to see what you made! You’re so amazing at sewing!” “Haha thanks!” Once we were close, the front door opened on its own. Even after all these years, Casita still amazed me. Standing inside was Pepa, Dolores and Camilos’ Mama. “Hola Tía! Gabi is here to take Dolores’ cake order!” Mirabel beamed. Pepa glared at me, “Why would I let someone like you make mi mija’s cake when Julietta is here? It has to be perfect!” I frowned and my stomach dropped. Pepa was always so nice to me! And what did she mean by “someone like you”? Mirabel must have been confused to cause she started to say something but was cut off by another voice. “Camilo!” It scolded with a thunder afterwards. “What have I told you about changing into family members?!” Another Pepa walked down the stairs with a thunder cloud over her head. Dolores was right behind her, frowning. The first Pepa smirked and changed back into Camilo. He kept the smirk on his face, “Have fun Gabi. Oh and by the way, you have some white stuff in your hair.” I felt my cheeks heat up in anger and embarrassment. I quickly ran my hands through my hair, looking at it as much as I could. He laughed and walked away. I glared daggers at his back. “Lo siento, Gabi, I don’t know what has gotten into him!” The real Pepa said. I took a deep breath to calm myself then smiled at the red headed woman. “It’s okay, Señora, boys will be boys.” We spent the rest of the afternoon drawing up and making plans for the wedding cake. I was so excited for Dolores! This was going to be amazing. Once I was sure I had everything I needed and all the sketches were done, I got up to leave. “You should stay for dinner!” Pepa exclaimed. “Oh! That’s very kind of you but I have to get back to my sister. I left her in charge of the shop and I gotta make sure she hasn’t burned the place down,” I said with a laugh. Pepa smiled at me, “Okay, I do want to have you over sometime though! I feel like it’s been forever since I saw your Mama!” “I think she would enjoy it! I’ll pass along the invite!” I hugged all three girls and left Casita. I was about halfway down the hill when someone jumped out, screaming and starling me. I screamed and dropped all of my papers. My fear turned to anger when I saw the dark haired teen. “Ay Dios mío! Camilo! What is wrong with you?!” I yelled, trying to grab the papers before they blew away. Camilo only laughed in response. I grabbed the last page and rounded on him like a bull. “You think you’re so funny, don’t you! Are you trying to ruin your sisters wedding? Seriously! Idiota! I don’t understand your obsession with trying to ruin my life, but it’s getting old!” “Jeez Gabi, it was just s joke. Don’t take it so hard!” He smirked. “Oh! So you think it’s a joke to make me drop and maybe lose the information for your sisters wedding cake?” “Well no but-“ “Leave me alone Camilo! You’ve made everyday miserable with your stupid pranks! And I’ve had enough!” “Gabi, calm down, Princesa.” “Don’t call me that! And don’t call me Gabi either! We aren’t friends!” “So emotional,” Camilo rolled his eyes. I glared at him hard then shoved past him, going down the hill towards town. I could hear him laughing the whole time. By the time I got to the bakery, my anger had bubbled. I slammed the door and aggressively slammed down the paperwork. “Whoa, what crawled up your skirt?” Sofia asked. I glared at her and she held up her hands. “If I never see Camilo Madrigal again, it’ll be too soon.” Sofía’s eyes widened and she giggled. “What is funny?!” I snapped. “You two hate each other so much. What happened anyway? Didn’t you guys used to be friends?” “We were never friends.” I went into the back, grabbed some dough, and started beating it with my fists. But Sofia’s question rang in my mind, bringing back unwanted memories.
He’ll Make You Smile Today
Camilo and Reader
Hello again, i was struck with sudden inspiration to write this. I am going to make this clear that this is NOT a love story. The reader had a bad day and so Camilo wants to make them smile. This way, readers of all ages can enjoy the story. Ok, enjoy.
Today was shaping up to be the worst day for you. This morning, you had ripped your favorite shirt and accidentally spilled coffee all over yourself. You went to count your chickens in the garden and there was one less than usual, meaning something had happened in the night. You were on your way to the market in the Encanto today when Pepa accidentally burned her hand on the stove in the Madrigal home, causing an immediate and unexpected thunderstorm, drowning you and everyone else unlucky enough to be outside in the downpour. As you scrambled to run home, you dropped your wallet in a puddle and soaked it completely through. Once you made it home, you realized you left your keys at the market and were forced to run back. You knew you were going to catch a cold. Instead of running the quarter mile back to your house from the market again, you decided to run to the Madrigal home. Their house was always open and they were always happy to help.
You knocked on the door, and Mirabel was there to greet you. Turns out, you were not the only one who had this idea. Two farmers and the local shoemaker were also there, completely soaked through. You sneezed once or twice and Mirabel handed you some tissues. “We’re sorry to inconvenience you all today. My mom’s helping with Pepa, once she is calmed down we can let you all go back.”
You decided to shack up leaning against the wall near a flower display, no doubt Isabela’s latest creation. Even the sight of the beautiful bouquet couldn’t sway the annoyance dripping off your facial expression. You weren’t annoyed at anyone in particular, just inconvenienced that this had happened at all. Mirabel noticed you seemed sour, and she rushed over. “Hey (y/n), you ok?” She asked carefully.
“Yeah, just a little peeved is all.”
“Yeah i know, it shouldn’t be too long now. My tía Pepa is usually never angry for long.” A light went off behind Mirabel’s eyes. “In the meantime, you look like you could use a good laugh. I’ll be right back.” Mirabel ran up the stairs and came back down a few minutes later with Camilo. “Camilo’s an expert at making people laugh. He’ll lighten your mood.” She said. You gave a side glance at Camilo, you knew him to be somewhat of a prankster in his free time. More than once you’ve seen him pretend to be children’s parents and scare them. You waved at him.
“Ok ok, let’s see what we’ve got here.” Camilo cracked his knuckles and shook them out. In an instant, he was someone entirely new. He was the local priest. He started doing an array of dances and imitations of animals to try and make you laugh, but you were so deep in your annoyance that it didn’t faze you.
“You’re gonna have to do better than that.” You taunted. You saw Camilo darkly smile before turning into the shoemaker’s wife. He swaggered over to the unsuspecting man and spun him in a circle, dipped him, and placed a large kiss on his forehead. The man was absolutely baffled, and you could hear Mirabel giggle off to the side. Still, you raised your eyebrow, obviously not impressed.
“Oooh, a tough one huh? Guess i’m bringing out the big guns.” Camilo said, before a barrage of imitations, shapeshifts and impressions were thrown at you. One minute, he was an old woman doing a handstand on her walker, the next he was a baby juggling some pots. Camilo tried everything in his power to make you even crack a smile, but you were still too immersed in what had happened to you today to smile.
Eventually, the shifting started to slow, as Camilo was exhausted. “Man, you don’t smile do ya? Fine, i give up. I can’t help you if you’re giving me nothing to work with.” Camilo threw his hands up in the air and walked away. As he stomped away, the casita threw up a floor tile, effectively tripping Camilo.
He fell flat on his face, your eyes widened. He stood up and turned around to face you again and his face was a mess. His eyes were different sizes and slouching, his nose was upside down and his mouth was on his forehead. He looked like a Picasso painting. You unintentionally let out a loud snort. As soon as you did you covered your mouth with both your hands.
Camilo shook his head, fixing his face and stared at you wide-eyed. “Ha! I did it! I made you laugh!” He puffed his chest out, evidently proud of himself.
“Actually, i think that point goes to your casita.” You retorted, watching Camilo deflate at your comment.
“What!? But it was my face that made you laugh!”
“If the casita hadn’t tripped you, you wouldn’t have made that face.”
“That’s not fair! I made you laugh!” Camilo had transformed into your parent. “(Y/n), the nice boy did make you laugh.” He tried to imitate their voice. You let out a chortle.
“Fine, whatever, congratulations Camilo, you made me laugh. Now get that stupid look off your face.” You said.
“What? This one?” He said with a shit-eating grin. He got very close to you, and you pushed him away with your hand.
The clouds lifted, finally. It was time to go home. You breathed a sigh of relief, as you were about to leave the house, you were stopped.
“Oh (y/n) wait!” It was Antonio. Behind him, he had your missing chicken. You were relieved to see her. “Your chicken wandered away in the middle of the night and got lost. I was gonna bring her over later but since you’re here now.”
“Thank you Antonio, I was worried something terrible happened to her.” You said relieved. You scooped up your missing hen and thanked the family one more time before setting off for home. This time, with a pep in your step, and the key in your pocket.
Thanks for reading, this account has been inactive for two years which is nuts. I have an actual Bruno x reader on the way so stay tuned for that. Thanks everyone!
Chapter Summary: Natalia and Bruno return home to the casita after their mini honeymoon.
______________________________
Natalia and Bruno stood in the doorway of the little house where they had spend their newlywed weekend together, looking into the house fondly.
“This place was so special.” Natalia said with a happy sigh.
“We should come back here sometime for a weekend once in a while.” Bruno suggested.
“I would love that!” Natalia said. “And hey, we know all the best spots in it now.”
Bruno smiled widely, putting his arm around her waist.
“That we most certainly do.”
Natalia and Bruno stood in the doorway of the little house where they had spend their newlywed weekend together, looking into the house fondly.
“This place was so special.” Natalia said with a happy sigh.
“We should come back here sometime for a weekend once in a while.” Bruno suggested.
“I would love that!” Natalia said. “And hey, we know all the best spots in it now.”
Bruno smiled widely, putting his arm around her waist.
“That we most certainly do.”
Natalia giggled. “I’m excited to see our family, I know it’s only been a few days but I miss them!”
“I miss them too!” Bruno said. “Anytime you’d stay overnight at the bakery my nieces and nephews would tell me how they missed you and that it felt so strange when you weren’t at the casita.”
“Aww!” Natalia cried, putting her hand over her heart. “They are the sweetest.”
“Ready to head home, amor?”
Natalia nodded with a smile.
They walked over to the casita and were immediately greeted by the home’s doors, waving wildly in excitement upon the couple’s return.
“Hang on, traditions are traditions!!” Bruno said, holding out his arm to keep Natalia from walking inside. He scooped her up in his arms and she cried out in laughter, wrapping her arms around his neck as he walked them both through the doorframe. She gave him a quick kiss before he carefully set her down.
“Aww, so romantic!” Mirabel said with a big smile, walking up to them alongside Antonio.
“They’re back they’re back!!!” Antonio cried out, running directly in between Natalia’s and Bruno’s legs, hugging one leg each. “Hi tío, hi tía!!”
“Hello my little love!!!” Natalia cried out, leaning down to hug him.
Bruno followed suit, hugging his youngest nephew with a big smile.
“Welcome home Mr. and Mrs.!” Isabela exclaimed, following close behind to hug them both.
“Hope you didn’t miss us too much while we were gone.” Natalia teased.
“We didn’t.” Camilo teased back, appearing from the hallway.
“He did.” Dolores added, walking up from behind her brother.
“You’re a bad liar.” Natalia responded to Camilo, giving her now nephew and niece hugs hello.
“It is super weird when you guys aren’t home now.” Luisa added, walking up to greet them. “I’ve gotten used to seeing Nat early in the morning now.”
“Early risers club!!” Natalia exclaimed, pointing at Luisa, Mirabel, and Camilo.
“How was your, what did you guys call it–?” Mirabel began.
“Our mini-moon!” Natalia exclaimed.
“It was wonderful, thank you.” Bruno said with a smile, taking Natalia’s hand.
“We probably slept like 15 hours the night after the wedding, we were absolutely exhausted.” Natalia said.
“There’s our brother and our new sister!” Julieta called out, walking into the room along with Pepa, Félix, and Agustín.
“Hola mis hermosas hermanas!” Natalia said happily, hugging Julieta and Pepa tightly at the same time.
“Welcome back, newlywed!” Félix said to Bruno while Natalia was occupied with the girls, lowering his voice before his next sentence. “You look a little tired. Worn out from all the…honeymooning there, hermano?”
Félix and Agustín laughed as Bruno’s face turned a vibrant shade of red.
“Heh, you could say that.” Bruno replied with a nervous laugh, glancing over at Natalia.
“Good man.” Félix teased, smacking Bruno on the shoulder.
Alma walked into the room, quickly ending Bruno’s conversation with his brothers-in-law.
“Welcome home!” Alma said, hugging Bruno and then making her way to Natalia.
“Abuela, now that we’re all here can we give them their gift?” Mirabel asked excitedly.
“Por supuesto, mija.”
“Eeeee yay!” Mirabel sped off into another room, returning with a medium sized rectangular gift in her hands. The gift was wrapped in beautiful thick ivory and gold wrapping paper and topped with a shimmery gold bow.
“Oh my goodness, the wrapping is so pretty I hardly want to rip it off.” Natalia said, looking at the gift. “You didn’t have to get us anything.”
“What was it you said to me that one time, tía? I won’t hear another word?” Mirabel said with a big smile.
“Ah, called out by your own words amor.” Bruno teased, nudging Natalia in the arm.
“She’s got me there.” Natalia replied with a laugh.
Bruno took the gift from Mirabel and carefully unwrapped it.
Natalia gasped when the gift was revealed, covering her mouth with her hand.
Inside was a beautiful photograph of the moment of Bruno and Natalia’s first kiss on their wedding day inside of a high quality wooden frame. The light flooded behind them in the photo perfectly, framing their faces, Natalia’s veil, and the arch behind them beautifully. You could see the love clear on their faces as they shared their first kiss as husband and wife, a truly magical moment caught on film forever.
“Oh my goodness Bruno, it’s us!! It’s our wedding!!!” Natalia said, her voice cracking as she grew more emotional.
“This picture is absolutely stunning, look how beautiful you are.” Bruno said to Natalia with a sweet smile, handing her the gift to look at closer.
Natalia beamed, hugging the frame tightly to her chest.
“I will cherish this forever.” Natalia said, looking around at the family with teary eyes. “Thank you so so much.”
“Yes, thank you so much everyone.” Bruno said, putting his hand on Natalia’s shoulder.
“We’ll we’ve bombarded you enough for the moment, go unpack your suitcases and think of where you want that frame to end up!” Mirabel said, the casita helping usher the couple upstairs.
____________________
Bruno and Natalia brought their bags up into their bedroom, ditching the bags in the corner and sitting down together on their bed.
Natalia put the framed photo in between their laps, taking Bruno’s hand with an absolutely enormous smile.
“We got married, Bruno.” She said softly, squeezing his hand.
Bruno put his hand under Natalia’s chin, gently turning her head towards his so he could kiss her. Natalia exhaled deeply as his lips met hers, her entire body nearly going limp from how incredible his kiss felt. As he so often did to her, her head felt dizzy with emotion.
“I can’t believe I get to be kissed by you like that forever.” She said breathlessly when they pulled apart, fanning her face with her hand. “My heart, you are just–you make a whole entire mess out of me.”
Bruno smiled at her, his heart racing faster by the second.
“I love you so much, my beautiful bride. I get to kiss you like that forever, I’m the lucky one.”
“I love you.” Natalia said, leaning her face in close to Bruno’s. “Okay, so hear me out.”
“Mm?”
“Let me very gently put this amazing framed photo on our dresser–“
“Okay–“
“Then I can make out with my wonderful husband for a little while longer–“
“Absolutely, yes, I’m following–“
“And then later tonight after we visit with the family we can eat some chips and salsa in bed, listen to some records, and then make out some more?”
Bruno laughed, running his fingers through Natalia’s hair as he left one quick kiss on her lips. “It’s like you read my mind.”
Natalia quickly got up to place the frame on the dresser and then ran back into Bruno’s open arms to tackle him down with more kisses.
Bruno beamed into her lips, listening to Natalia giggle as her full weight knocked him flat on his back on their bed. They had spent the entire weekend all over each other and yet the second they got back home all they wanted was more and more of one another.
They linked their fingers together and Natalia pulled herself up, straddling his hips.
“What?” Bruno asked with a smile, looking up at her.
“Just admiring the incredible view below me.” She said, giving him a once over with her eyes and landing her gaze on his left hand. “I’ve got to say, seeing a wedding ring on you is super, super hot.”
“Ooh, you think so?” Bruno responded, feeling heat rise to his face as Natalia flirted with him.
“It’s a statement of fact.” Natalia said, leaning back down and taking Bruno’s face in her hands before continuing to kiss him.
Both of them laughed as Natalia fell over beside Bruno, and when he opened his eyes back up to look at her he experienced another one of those blissful moments where he felt like time slowed down.
He saw his wife looking back at him, her green eyes sparkling with joy as she caught her breath from laughing. Her long dark hair framed her face beautifully and her lips were a shade pinker than normal from all of their many, many kisses.
“I still can’t believe you’re real sometimes.” Bruno whispered, tucking a stray piece of her hair behind her ear.
Natalia blushed, feeling her pulse in her ears. “I feel the same. Real and yours forever, my love.”
Bruno kissed her forehead sweetly and she closed her eyes.
“We should probably do something that doesn’t involve a bed for at least a few minutes this weekend, don’t you think?” Natalia teased after a moment, putting her arm around Bruno’s waist.
“Where’s the fun in that?” Bruno flirted, his eyes flashing neon green at her for just a moment. It was a long enough moment to make her ache all over for him once again, and she couldn’t resist leaning in to him for another long, deep kiss.
This time it was her kiss that made him feel wobbly all over. She felt the heat on his skin as she pulled him in closer to her by the back of his neck.
Bruno let out a soft moan into her mouth as she kissed him silly. He found her waist with his eyes closed and pulled her tightly towards him.
When their lips eventually parted, Bruno had to take a moment to catch his breath.
“Wow.” He breathed out.
“See, I’m fun.” Natalia said with a smirk in a low, silky voice.
“You are perfect.” Bruno said softly.
Natalia ran her hand sweetly along his cheek before popping up and off the bed. “Come on, we’ll never leave this room if we don’t go now.”
“Oh!” Bruno exclaimed, a sudden thought entering his mind as he stood up. “I know we’ve been pretty occupied since we got in here but did you have any thoughts on where we should put that frame?”
“Hmm, it’s a tough call.” Natalia replied, crossing her arms and scrunching up her face. “I feel like it shouldn’t be in here because then no one but us would ever see it.”
“Fair.” Bruno said. “What about somewhere in the music room?”
Natalia perked up at the idea, but still looked a bit hesitant.
“That wouldn’t be like, weird?”
“Not at all.” Bruno assured her. “That room was inspired by you, after all. That room would likely never exist if we’d never gotten together. We’ve got that wonderful picture of you with your parents in there, so having our wedding photo in there makes perfect sense to me.”
Natalia smiled. “I think that’s lovely. There’s a blank spot on the wall above the little bookshelf, I think it’d be perfect there.”
“I agree.”
Natalia picked up the frame, looking at it affectionately one more time before they headed out their bedroom door.
“I agree too, that’s a perfect place for it.” Dolores said to the couple as she passed them in the hallway, making them chuckle.
Natalia saw Mirabel at the bottom of the stairs and handed the frame to Bruno once she descended the stairs, wrapping Mirabel up in a tight hug.
Mirabel giggled, happily returning Natalia’s hug.
“What’s this for?”
“I just missed you, is that allowed?” Natalia teased with a big grin, swaying Mirabel back and forth as they hugged. “I’m spoiled by having my Madrigal girls around me every single day so after a few days without you guys around I was just missing you all too much!!”
“Aww, we missed you too!!!” Mirabel said. “Luisa wasn’t kidding when she said it’s so weird without you guys around the house now. We’re so used to hearing your beautiful voice coming out of the music room or you and tío Bruno making someone laugh in the living room. The casita doesn’t feel right without you guys in it now.”
“My heart.” Natalia said sweetly, giving Mirabel a kiss on the cheek before they pulled apart. When they separated Natalia held on to Mirabel’s arms, looking at her affectionately.
“I can’t handle how tall and grown up all of you girls are getting. More and more gorgeous every day.”
“Thank you, tía.”  Mirabel said, making Natalia misty eyed hearing her new title. “I must say though, I think everyone probably looks tall to you. Whenever I see you with your shoes off I’m reminded how teeny tiny you actually are.”
Natalia laughed. “Ha! I certainly am not gonna win any points in the height category in this family, that’s for sure.”
Natalia and Bruno walked over to the music room and hung up their wedding photo, perfectly filling an empty space on the room’s walls.
“It’s like it was always meant to be there.” Bruno said, putting his arm around Natalia’s shoulders and hugging them.
Natalia reached up to one of her shoulders to touch Bruno’s hand.
“I couldn’t agree more.”
Natalia turned in closer to Bruno, running her fingers down his shirt along his chest.
“Well, now that all this wonderful wedding business is behind us I can focus on the birthday of a certain handsome husband that’s coming up. And two lovely sisters-in-law, but handsome husband takes priority.“
Bruno lifted Natalia’s face up by her chin, causing her heart to start pounding.
“And what a gorgeous, gorgeous gift I get to unwrap.” He said in a low voice.
“Nati?!”
Pepa’s yell broke the sensual air between the couple in one loud syllable.
“Speaking of lovely sisters-in-law!” Natalia said with a chuckle, speeding out of the room.
“I’m here!” Natalia said, coming up beside Pepa and Julieta in the kitchen.
“We could’ve just walked down the hall to find her, Pepa.” Julieta said with a laugh, shaking her head.
“I mean, it worked!” Natalia said, smiling widely.
“See?” Pepa teased her sister.
“I was just talking about you two, how we have some triplet birthdays coming up.” Natalia said.
“I can’t believe another year has gone by already!” Julieta said, a nostalgic look in her eyes.
“The last year has certainly been a very special and wonderful one.” Pepa said, looking over affectionately at Natalia.
“I still can’t believe I have sisters! And, by sheer luck, the best sisters in the whole world!!!” Natalia exclaimed, putting her arms out to her sides. Julieta and Pepa each hugged Natalia on either side.
“First Madrigal girls group hug since the wedding!” Natalia said happily, kissing each of the sisters on the sides of their heads.
“Camilo was trying to be sly about it,” Pepa began as the three of them pulled apart. “But he missed you both so much when you were gone for the weekend. He managed to weave the two of you into nearly every conversation.”
“Mirabel too, but she wasn’t as shy about it.” Julieta added with a grin.
“After having Bruno gone for so long, and now having you in the family, we’re just so happy to have you both here with us now.” Pepa said.
“I am too.” Natalia replied, her heart warmed by their words. “I know how much Bruno missed all of you, I can’t even imagine how much you missed him too.”
“Words were never enough.” Pepa said softly, a small cloud forming over her head.
“Hey hey, enough of that sad talk.” Natalia said quickly, putting her hand on Pepa’s arm reassuringly. “We’re all here now. You called me in here for a reason, right?”
“Oh, yes!” Pepa said, fanning the cloud about her away. “Camilo has been panicking all weekend because he misplaced one of his favorite jackets.”
“I have not been panicking.” Camilo replied, walking into the kitchen almost on cue.
“One of my lucky guitar picks is in that jacket.” He said, much quieter.
Natalia giggled. “How can I help?”
“Well, I think I might have left my jacket in the bakery when I was there last week.” Camilo continued. “I’ve scoured everywhere in the casita and it’s not here.”
“I left you guys a key to the bakery while we were gone, I’m pretty sure I left it with you Juli?” Natalia responded.
Julieta put her face in her hand, laughing into it. “Ay Dios mío, I completely forgot about that.” She walked over to her bedroom and returned with the key in hand, handing it to Natalia.
“Thanks, tía.” Camilo said to Julieta with a chuckle.
“Here.” Natalia said, handing the key to Camilo. “Just make sure to lock up on your way back, okay?”
“This is big gesture of trust, mijito.” Pepa said.
“Thanks for trusting me, Nat.” Camilo said. “I promise to only wreck the place a little.”
“I appreciate it.” Natalia laughed, patting Camilo on the shoulder.
Camilo headed out to the bakery, and after a few minutes the casita’s phone rang.
“Madrigals, Luisa speaking.” Luisa answered.
“Hey, it’s Camilo.”
“Camilo? Where are you?”
“I’m at Nat’s bakery, I left my jacket here and she lent me her key to come grab it. Can you put her on the line?”
Luisa put her hand over the receiver.
“NAT!!!!”
Natalia popped her head out of the dining room, her hand over her heart.
“Is it ‘screaming for Natalia’ day at the casita?” She joked. “You guys are going to give me a heart attack!”
“Phone for you.” Luisa said softly with a smirk.
“Thanks.” Natalia replied with a flat chuckle. “Hello?”
“Hey Nat, it’s me.”
“Hi me, what’s up?”
“The bakery’s mailbox is like, spilling over with cards. Do you want me to bring them back with me?”
“Really?” Natalia asked. “Sure, thank you!”
“Anything else you need while I’m here?”
“I’m all set, thanks pequeñito.”
“You got it!”
The line clicked off, and Bruno approached Natalia as she hung up the phone.
“Everything okay?” He asked.
“Camilo’s over at the bakery grabbing a jacket he left there and he said the mailbox was completely filled up with cards. He’s bringing them back with him.”
“How nice!”
Camilo walked through the casita’s front door shortly after, his jacket hanging on one arm and his hands filled with a huge stack of cards.
“Oh my goodness, all of this?” Natalia said, taking the stack from him.
“You’re welcome for carrying them over.” Camilo teased.
“You’re welcome for the honor of getting a key to my business, my former home, my livelihood.” Natalia replied.
“Ugh, you’re just as dramatic as me.”
“That’s why we get along.”
Natalia brought the cards upstairs and left them on the dresser in her and Bruno’s room.
____________________
Natalia and Bruno spent the next few hours relaxing and catching up with family before grabbing their previously discussed bag of chips and jar of salsa and heading back up to their bedroom.
Natalia spread out some paper towels on their bed and they began crunching on their snack.
“Oh! Can you hand me the card pile please?” She asked Bruno.
“Wow, this is quite the stack!” He said, handing the cards over to her.
“I know, it’s so sweet.”
Natalia opened up the first card, smiling as she read the kind words inside.
“From one of my regulars. I’m guessing most of these are.” She said. “I put a little notice on the bakery’s front door saying I’d be closed for my wedding and to think they all took the time to write and send these, my heart is so full.”
“You are loved by so so many, mi corazón.” Bruno said, kissing her shoulder. “Every single person you come into contact with just adores you.”
Natalia beamed up at him, caressing his cheek.
“You’re so sweet. Te adoro.”
Natalia took some time in between bites of chips and salsa to open the rest of her cards, all filled with lovely messages from all of her regulars at the bakery, neighbors, and friends around town.
“Aww, that was the last one.” Natalia said, setting down the last card with a smile. “So so sweet of all of them to send us such nice wedding wishes.”
“We’ll store them somewhere safe.” Bruno said. “I’m very grateful for their kind words.”
“All set with the snacks?” Natalia asked. Bruno nodded, and Natalia took the empty envelopes and food and ran downstairs to throw trash away and put the food back.
Bruno moved all of the opened cards off the bed and back onto their dresser, wiping a few stray chip crumbs off of the blanket. He flipped through his collection of records, picking a favorite of theirs and placing it on his record player.
“Oooh, perfect.” Natalia said about the music choice as she re-entered their room. “We’re in for the night, right?”
“Mhm.” Bruno replied, taking his wife’s hands and leading her into a dance.
The wood floor creaked a bit beneath their bare feet as they danced along their room.
They swayed along to the music for a while, Natalia cuddling up to Bruno’s chest.
“Tienes frío, amor?” Bruno asked.
“A little.”
“Well that is simply not allowed.”
Bruno took her hand and led her to their bed. She crawled into bed first, Bruno following behind and covering them both with their comforter.
Bruno grinned widely at her, pulling her body as close to his as possible. They intertwined their legs, and Natalia exhaled contentedly into Bruno’s collarbone.
“I didn’t forget about the post chips and salsa part of our night.” She said softly.
Bruno grinned. “Well then come here, mi bella.”
Natalia kissed him once and immediately started to giggle.
“What’s funny?” Bruno said, smiling at her giggles.
“Your lips are salty.” She whispered.
“So are yours.”
They both laughed, melting back into each other for a blissful second round of kisses that would last well into the night.
"If it was all in our heads, then how did she cut her hand?"
Mirabel, tía Julieta, and I sat in the kitchen as the party continued elsewhere. She was preparing an arepa for her daughter. "Oscar's right. I would never ruin Antonio's night! Is that really what you think?" Mirabel asked her mother.
"What I think is that today was very hard for the both of you—"
"That's not... The entire problem." I cut Julieta off. "We were looking out for the family. And I might not be super strong like Luisa, or effortlessly perfect like Señorita Perfecta Isabela, who's never even had a bad hair day. But..." Mirabel sighed. "Whatever."
I've had bad hair days, but those weren't days when I was in a bad mood. Those would be days where I'm either woken up too early, being scolded for not eliminating pests fast enough, or having to take a bath.
Yeah, I ripped a bag of flour open once. Deal with it.
Casita delivered the arepa to Julieta, who moves closer to Mirabel. She takes a bite from the arepa. "I wish you could see yourself the way Oscar and I do. You are perfect, just like this. You're just as special as anyone else in this family." Julieta said. I nodded.
"Mhm. You just healed my hand with an arepa con queso."
Is she gonna finish that arepa con queso?
"I healed your hand..." Then Julieta got playful like. "With love for my daughter. With her wonderful brain..."
Mirabel tried to wriggle away from her mother's affection. "Agh."
"...Big heart..."
"Stop."
"...Cool glasses..."
"Mamá."
Julieta gave Mirabel a big kiss on her cheek. "Ay, te amo, cosa linda."
Though she tried to snuggle up to Mirabel, she isn't won over. She extricates herself, "We know what we saw."
Julieta sighed. "Mira, my brother Bruno lost his way in this family... I don't want the same for you and Oscar. Get some sleep. You'll feel better tomorrow."
~~~~~~~~~~
Easier said than done, tía Julieta. Now I'm paranoid that I'm gonna have nightmares. I mean, every night, I get at least a little paranoid about having nightmares. Nothing bad has to happen that day, either!
The scene was playing on loop inside my brain; the cracks forming everywhere, and the candle almost going out. It wouldn't go away, no matter how much I wish it would.
"Can't sleep?" Mirabel asked me. "No. I can't. I wish I could. But now I'm scared... Could the house really be in trouble?" I answered, then asked. "I... I don't know, mi amor. I just don't know." Mirabel bent down over her bed to stroke the back of my neck. Ohh... That feels good... "Try to get some sleep, okay? I'll have a plan by morning."
And within seconds, I drifted off to sleep.
.
.
.
Wait... What just happened?
Why am I back in the courtyard?
What's everyone else doing up? Don't they know what time it is?
Why is Isabela's dress a bunch of different colors? Wasn't it a bright pastel purple last I checked?
Why are Mirabel and Abuela arguing?!
"Luisa will never be strong enough... Isabela won't be perfect enough... Bruno only left because you only saw the worst in him!"
¿Que? Is that true? Could it possibly be true?
"Bruno didn't care about this family!"
That isn't true! We just don't know the reason WHY he left!
"He LOVES this family! I love this family! We all love this family! You're the one that doesn't care! You're the one breaking our home!"
It's true! I love this family! More than anything!
"Don't you ever—!"
SILENCIO, LET HER FINISH!
"Our miracle is dying, because of you!"
In that very moment, the biggest crack anyone has ever seen appears on the floor.
Chaos, as Mirabel ran off to try and save the candle.
Everyone urging her to leave it and escape while she still can.
And me, glued to her shoulder. Petrified as too much was happening at once.
Finally, she grabs it. But then the tower comes crashing down. Down... Down... The only direction we could go from there.
We both landed on the cracked floor, candle in hand. We looked up at the debris that was about to fall!
But then...
It all cut to black.
.
.
.
"Oscar! ¡Despierta (Wake up)!"
And wake up I did. With a loud yell that probably would've woken Dolores up... And quite possibly everyone else on this side of the second floor. "Whoa, hey, Oscar, chill!"
My blurry vision finally cleared up. At that moment, I zeroed in on my surroundings. I was back in Mirabel's room. Thank goodness...
Trembling, I leaped into Mirabel's arms, not bothering to hold back the oncoming tears. She put her arms around me. My breathing was shaky and labored. An occasional sob slipped out. Mirabel, the good prima she is, rubbed my back in slow, gentle strokes from head to tail. I just couldn't bring myself to purr right now.
"It's okay. Breathe. I'm right here."
I meant to meow, like a normal cat, but instead it came out as "mama." And Mirabel only hugged me tighter. "Yeah, mamá's right here..."
The sobs eventually turned into small hiccups. It felt like horas (hours) before the trembling came down. She didn't stop stroking my back. Mirabel knows exactly how to calm me down after a nightmare...
As does Camilo. Last week, I dreamt I was being eaten alive by this enormous rope-like creature that humans probably call a serpiente (snake), and I almost bolted out of the room. Believe me or not, all it took for Camilo to calm me down was a tight hug.
All of the nietos (grandchildren), minus Antonio who occasionally draws a blank, have their own ways of getting me to settle down.
This nightmare is different, though... It was almost like I had a future vision. Kinda like...
"¿Pesadilla (Nightmare)?"
I nodded.
"Wanna talk about it?"
I didn't answer at first. Do I wanna talk about it? She's probably gonna think I'm crazy...
"You don't have to if you don't want to, but it might make you feel better—"
"The cracks came back." I blurted out. There was a mix of concern and interest on her face. I guess she believes me. "Tell me everything that happened."
"I don't even know... First, you and Abuela were arguing... Then Casita started to fall apart... I don't know, Mira... It was just a dream. It can't possibly be real..." I've felt unsure about a lot of things, but this would be at the top of the list. "Can it?"
Mirabel pondered on for a few moments, then sighed. "That dream you had, Oscar... It sounds real." She whispered. "I mean... You and I both saw the cracks, right?"
"Sí."
"And you saw cracks in your dream, right?"
"Are you suggesting that I just predicted the future? Because that'd be really cool... And terrifying."
"Your dream sounds terrible. I'm so sorry you had to see all that." Mirabel said, pulling me close again. "It's okay..."
I didn't know how much I had dared to ask. I know Mirabel isn't falling asleep easily, either, and I didn't want to bother her. But on the other hand, *I* knew I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep yet. I let out an exasperated sigh, alerting Mirabel to my mental turmoil.
"Oscar?"
I mentally cursed at how loud my sigh ended up being. "I'm just thinking."
"What about?" Mirabel was concerned. She had calmed quite a bit, but she could still sense something on my mind, the empath she is. I silently gulped, knowing I'd have to answer her.
"I... I was wondering if you could do something for me... and it stay between us?"
Mirabel cocked her brow a bit at the question. "What is it?"
I glanced back, a blush on my face. "Ay... Do you think you'd be okay to tickle me?"
Mirabel's mouth fell open for a moment, before being replaced with a grin. Yeah, back when I was a kitten, I was really ticklish. And there aren't many cats that like being tickled, so... Without giving it a second thought, Mirabel gave me a semi evil smile.
"Oh? You mean, like this?" Mirabel quickly shifted her hands from my waist to my sides, tickling at a moderate pace. I squealed before dissolving into giggles. "Is this what you're after?" Mirabel teased as she tickled the sides of my ribs.
"HEHEHEHEHE Y-YEAH! HEHEHEAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" I giggled wildly, which caused Mirabel to let out a small giggle of her own.
"Or," Mirabel drawled out. "Maybe I should tickle you... HERE!"
Without more warning, Mirabel switched to tickle my stomach, causing the me to wrap my arms around myself and kick my back legs a bit. I even started thrashing from side to side, though the my prima knew it was just a reaction. If I had really wanted her to stop, I'd be pushing her hands away with more force and making it clear for her to stop. Mirabel couldn't help but laugh at how cute I looked, nor how much I was laughing.
"HAHAHAHAHAAH MIHIHIRABEHEHEEHEL!" I squealed as she tickled at a faster pace.
"What's the matter?" she teased. "I thought you liked it when I tickled you there."
I laughed wildly, unable to reply to my cousin's statement. Mirabel took this as a sign to keep teasing and tickling, scribbling her fingers a little faster, until she decided to up her taunting game.
"...Tickle..."
"HAHAHA M-Mirabel!" I half squealed. I knew what was coming. But Mirabel ignored me and slowed her tickling to match the speed of her taunting.
"...Tickle... Tickle... Tickle..." My giggles went up a pitch or two, anticipation spread across my face. While I knew this would tickle a lot and drive me insane, I also knew that I was having fun, and so was Mirabel; she couldn't wipe the smile off her face, no matter how hard she tried. "Tickle tickle tickle tickle tickle..."
And suddenly, with a burst of speed, Mirabel raised the pitch of her own voice super high as she started tickling as fast as she could and teasing rapidly "TICKLETICKLETICKLETICKLETICKLETICKLE!"
I lost it, a slight scream leaving my mouth before deep laughter and thrashing continued. Mirabel broke into a bit of laughter herself at my reaction. It was hysterical to see me react in such a manner.
Sure, we have a miracle to preserve... But might as well have fun while we can.

I WAS gonna make this longer, but I grew too tired and called it a night. Hope you enjoyed it anyway!

Goldie (Julieta x Reader)
Tumblr media
Julieta knew something was wrong ever since you and Antonio turned down her offer to make cookies with her. Of all her sister's children, Toñito was the one she spent the most time with, if only because he loved being with you and you rarely left your wife's side, so the three of you would end up spending the day together.
She wasn't complaining, she loved her nephews and daughters alike, but the way you two hurriedly left Casita with fake smiles and the silent way you tried to sneak back didn't reassure her. It also didn't help that Casita tried to distract her while you and Toñito walked behind her.
Look, she loved you more than anything, but she also knew you better than anyone, she knew who she married, and she knew you could be chaotic without supervision. And after the couple of visitors they've had at home in the last hour, she'd better make sure you and Antonio weren't in trouble.
The brunette stopped what she was doing, wiped her hands, and took off her apron before going upstairs, a little nervous about what she might find when entering her room. She was a little surprised that you two went into hers and not the boy's, but at least she wouldn't waste time trying to find you in the jungle in her nephew's room.
"Y/N, Antonio, is everything alright here?" she asked, opening the door.
You jumped up and quickly tried to hide something behind you as Antonio rushed to his aunt's side, with a smile so big that his cheeks must be hurting.
"Tía Julieta, hi" he said "the cookies are ready?" he asked nervously
"Maybe you should go back to the kitchen, Juli, we don't want them to burn, do we?" you added
"They are ready and the stove is off, nothing will burn" she answered, raising an eyebrow "now, what are you two hiding?"
"Nothing!" you said a little loudly "Don't worry mi amor, everything is fine, nothing to worry about, why don't you go back to what you were doing? I'm sure you were busy"
"Yes aunty, you looked busy"
Julieta blinked as Antonio tried to gently push her out of her own room. Something was definitely up. She crossed her arms and carefully walked around her nephew, walking back into the room and closing the door behind her.
You swallowed when your wife walked straight up to you and even though you tried to stop her, she managed to get around you and look at what was behind your back. You and Antonio looked at each other nervously while the brunette was silent for a moment.
In front of her was a small fish tank, with a small goldfish happily swimming back and forth. Strange, yes, but perhaps at another time it would have been cute. However, one of the visitors that afternoon came quickly to Julieta's mind and she turned to you, her eyes wide.
"Please tell me that's not the fish Sra. Pezmuerto has been looking for. Tell me the truth" she said
"Well, I can't do both, Julieta!" you said, shrugging
"Y/N!"
"What?"
"You stole a fish?! And you took Antonio with you?!" she scolded you
"No, no, no. We rescued it" you corrected her "besides, technically, he took me"
Julieta looked at you puzzled before looking at her nephew. Antonio looked down at his feet and fiddled with the edge of his shirt for a moment. He didn't like it when his aunt looked at him as if he had done something wrong.
"Pollito?" she softly asked "what happened? and I want the truth"
"I...I heard him, tía" he replied meekly "I was passing by Sra. Pezmuerto's house and I heard him asking for help, so I came for Y/N to help me. He was suffering, he was dying in that little fishbowl, tía"
"Toñito couldn't keep hearing him scream, Juli" you said softly
Julieta was silent for a moment. She knew that her nephew's gift, like those of the entire family, might sound wonderful, but it had a less beautiful counterpart. It was not uncommon for Antonio to come to you or to her sad for having heard what nature had in store for animals according to the food chain. But it was the first time he had tried to intervene, so it really must have been too much for him.
"This is different from the food chain" Antonio said as if reading the woman's thoughts "This fish was suffering because of a lady who doesn't know and isn't interested in learning how to take care of it...it wasn't fair"
"Did you enter her house?" your wife asked you, briefly ignoring the boy.
"No" you promised "She had him on the patio. In the sun. Anyone could have taken it."
"Doesn't mean you should have!"
"He was dying, Julieta!"
Julieta looked at you for a moment and then at Antonio before sighing. You had a good point. She was in no way supporting the robbery, but she had to admit that this woman had already lost many fishes several times, before and after Bruno's vision, so something must be wrong with her.
"Then may I ask why you brought him here?" she said "Why not to Toñito's room?"
"Because Pepa will inevitably search his room once she knows the fish is missing" you said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Why didn't you release him into the river?"
"He's small, he doesn't know how to survive alone" Antonio said "besides, they took him out of there, they could fish him again"
"That doesn't answer why you brought him here" Julieta raised an eyebrow
"You have a huge garden with a big pond in the middle of your room, Juli" you said "don't be selfish"
Your wife jumped a little at your tone, but she rolled her eyes lovingly at the slight smile that tugged at the corner of your mouth. You really knew how to drive her crazy.
"Please, tía" Antonio begged "can he stay here?"
"Please, Juli" you joined him "I'll do whatever you want"
Julieta looked at the two of you, hating how her will immediately broke at the puppy faces you were making. She should consider treason that you had taught Toñito one of your best weapons against her.
"Fine" she sighed in defeat "but you're going to take care of him" she said, pointing to Antonio "and I'll talk to you later" she pointed to you
"Yes, tía!"
"Yes ma'am!"
You and Antonio high-fived before he hugged his aunt's legs and she rolled her eyes as she patted his head.
"You're the best, mom hen" he said
“I know, Pollito”
__________________________
"You have to admit that little Goldie brings an extra touch of life to the garden, mi amor" you said, hugging your wife from behind.
The brunette rolled her eyes, remembering the awkward moment she had to go through at dinner when her sister asked Toñito if he knew anything about the missing fish. On the one hand, she supposed it was a good thing that the sweet boy didn't know how to lie, but that had left you and her juggling to cover up your little crime.
"Goldie?" she asked, turning in your arms to look at you with a raised eyebrow.
"Antonio said that was his name" you shrugged your shoulders "And I'm not going to judge anyone's name, especially a fish’s"
"I guess it fits" she admitted
Your pulse quickened a little as she smirked and wrapped her arms around your neck to draw you closer to her. You could smell the cinnamon and apple, mixed with something that was just her. It was intoxicating.
"But if I remember correctly, you said you would do anything if I let Goldie stay."
"And I suppose you already have something in mind?" you smiled, putting your hands on her hips
Julieta's smirk just widened before she pulled you in for a deep kiss. Her tongue quickly found a home in your mouth and from the firm way she dominated the kiss, you knew you were in for one of those rare but beautiful nights when she was in full control.
"Bed, now" she ordered when she broke away
"Yes ma'am"

Chapter Summary: Bruno and Natalia have some important discussions about their plans for the future.
______________________________
A little over a month had passed since Bruno and Natalia's engagement. They had excitedly rang in the new year together as an engaged couple and the month of January had flown by as they started to work on wedding plans and getting Natalia all moved in to the casita.
The two of them were together at the bakery on a rainy night, getting some of Natalia's belongings packed.
"Does it feel strange, seeing your things getting packed up like this?" Bruno asked, taking a decoration off of her wall.
"Yes and no." Natalia replied. "I lived with my dad in a different house for most of my life before I lived here. About a year before he passed away my tía retired and gave full ownership of the bakery over to me, so I moved here then. Tía lived in this apartment all the years she ran this place, and only moved into where she is now after retiring. So this place holds a lot of special memories, but it's not like I'm fully losing it you know?"
Bruno nodded.
"The least convenient change out of the deal is that I have to get up a whole ten minutes earlier in the mornings to walk to work from the casita, but now I'll get to wake up to you next to me and have a super awesome family right down the hall every day so it's a fair trade." Natalia said, grinning. "I figured I could always just crash here on a night when I'm super behind on work if need be, and we can always use it as our private romantic getaway." She said sweetly, running her hand along Bruno's back as she passed him.
"Who knows, maybe one of our kids will want to take it over one day." She added softly.
Bruno felt like electricity passed through his system at her mentioning children in their future. It was something he'd certainly thought about, but they hadn't discussed it in any detail.
Natalia blinked a few times, processing Bruno's visible strong reaction to her words.
"I guess we've never really talked about kids much, have we? We probably should since we're you know, getting hitched and all." She said with a smile.
"I just never really found the right moment to ask." Bruno said nervously. "Is–is that something you want? Kids, I mean?"
Natalia put down the basket she was holding and hugged Bruno around his waist, looking up lovingly into his eyes.
"Absolutely. Always have. And there is no one in the world I think would make a more incredible father than you, my love. Félix and Agustín being close seconds of course, but I'm biased."
Bruno felt joy radiate throughout his entire body.
"I feel the same way mi amor, I know you'll be an absolutely amazing mother." He said and then paused, an anxiousness in his chest. "That uh–that's not your way of trying to tell me something is it?" He asked, half teasing.
"Ha, no no." Natalia said, putting her hand over her abdomen. "I am very much not pregnant at the moment, my period started this morning with a vengeance. I ate like 4 chocolate chip muffins before you even came over today. I promise when I actually am pregnant you won't find out in a casual conversation in my bedroom."
Bruno laughed.
"Sorry, was that too much information?" Natalia asked, chuckling a bit apologetically.
"No, of course not." Bruno replied. "I'm just sorry that that's something you have to deal with. You can always talk to me about anything you're going through, physically, emotionally, anything. And frankly, if I want to put my body inside of your body I think I automatically lose my 'being weird about women’s normal bodily functions' card."
Natalia laughed. "That is much appreciated."
"Can I get you anything, are you feeling okay?" Bruno asked.
"You're sweet, thank you. I'm okay, I may ask Julieta later if I can get something from her to help with the cramping but I'll survive until then."
Bruno cleared his throat. "I um, I can't imagine it hasn't run through your mind about our kids having–"
"Gifts?"
"Yeah." He nodded.
"Of course, and that is something that's obviously incredible and exciting but it's not like our whole relationship was some kind of big long con just so I could get some cute magical kids out of the deal." Natalia teased, making Bruno chuckle. "Magic or no magic, whatever gifts they will or won't end up with, I will love our kids exactly the same and we will just continue on the Madrigal family's course of completely unusual and unique approaches to parenting."
Bruno laughed. "That's putting it lightly."
"No matter what happens, they'll be ours and that's the most beautiful thing I can possibly imagine." Natalia said with a soft smile, squeezing him tightly.
"I couldn't agree more." Bruno said softly, kissing the top of her head.
"I do know for a fact that I want more than one.” Natalia said. “I always wanted siblings growing up, but that just wasn't in the cards for my family. Seeing the relationship you have with your sisters and the relationships your nieces and nephews have, I want that for our kids. They'll obviously have so many wonderful aunts and uncles and cousins, but I want to give them all of those possible types of relationships. Don't get me wrong, my dad and my tía were always wonderful, but a lot of my life before you and your family became a part of it was pretty lonely. I don't want that for them."
Bruno hugged Natalia close to his chest.
"That will never happen." He said. "They will have so much family and love and chaos around them at all times that they will honestly have no clue what loneliness even is."
Natalia laughed.
"Jokes aside though, I certainly know what it feels like to be lonely." Bruno said softly. "Not in the exact same way as you of course, but I can empathize. I promise you from the bottom of my heart that you will never have to feel that loneliness again."
Natalia smiled warmly at him, putting her hand on his cheek.
"Thank you, mi corazón." She said warmly. "I don't feel that way anymore, having you and your family take me in as completely and lovingly as you all have, it has just filled up my heart like you can't even believe."
"I can certainly believe it." Bruno replied. "I felt the same way after my family took me back in like they did after my decade away. The love they showed me, everything about finding you and how life has just become so good in the time since I've been back, I know how incredible it feels to fill that empty space in your heart again."
"I love you." Natalia said, kissing him softly.
"I love you more."
____________________
Bruno and Natalia packed a few small boxes with clothes, shoes, and some various decorations off of her walls.
"Were you wanting to take over any of your bigger furniture?" Bruno asked. "My room is decorated about as minimally as a person could decorate a room so there's plenty of space for whatever you want to bring."
Natalia looked around the room.
"I do think I'd like to bring my desk. It'd be way easier to just tape the cabinets shut and ask Luisa to bring it over in one piece than taking everything out, packing it, and then refilling it."
"Absolutely!" Bruno agreed,
"I'll leave my chair here, I like to come up here and sit at the window during my lunch breaks on work days." Natalia added. "Did you say you had extra empty drawers in your dresser?"
Bruno nodded. "I only use like three of them, the rest are yours."
"Perfect, thank you. Dresser can stay here too then. I don't honestly own too much stuff, everything you're looking at now is pretty much what I've got. The casita is by far the biggest space I'll have ever lived in."
"Most homes aren't magical and designed to accommodate like twenty people and physically grow every time a new kid is born, it certainly takes some getting used to from anyone outside of the family." Bruno teased.
"Ha, fair! Like I've said, the transition from a teeny tiny family to a big giant family is a beautiful but definitely new experience for me. Wouldn't change it for the world though."
Bruno smiled. "Speaking of experiences, I've been meaning to ask you–have you given any thought to a wedding date you like?"
Natalia looked over at him as she sat down in the chair in the corner, a somewhat guilty look in her eyes.
"Can I be honest with you?" She asked.
"Of course."
"Would you be horrified if I said I was thinking about us having the wedding in say, a couple of months?"
Bruno shook his head. "Of course not, why would I be?"
"Because I know your family's weddings are traditionally a bit bigger and grander and I certainly don't want to take that experience away from you if that's something you want. But...what I would really love more than anything is just a small intimate gathering with our families to celebrate. And, to be honest–"
Natalia paused, looking down at her lap.
"I don't know how much time I have left with my tía, you know? I'm not saying she's dying right this minute or anything, she's doing really well for her age actually, but I know sometimes big weddings can take like a year or two to plan and I just can't guarantee that sort of time with her. I don't want there to be absolutely no one from my family at our wedding. I know it would mean everything to her, and to me, for her to be able to be there and to actually get that close personal time with everyone that day instead of everyone running around trying to coordinate this big crazy event."
Bruno knelt down in front of Natalia and cupped her cheek gently with his hand.
"Natalia, I love you. Our wedding isn't about having the biggest fanciest event, it's about us. It's about what we want, not what's expected of a typical wedding. I of course want Maria to be there too and that is such an understandable concern. Listen, Pepa and Félix's wedding was in a literal hurricane and it was still an incredible day because of how much they love each other. The wedding you described sounds perfect, an intimate celebration of us and our love with the people closest to us. There are so many Madrigals that it automatically becomes a medium sized wedding anyway just when you get through counting the grandkids."
Natalia laughed, her cheeks glowing as she smiled.
"I love you so much, I knew you'd understand." She said, her tone brighter. "I just want to make sure you're happy, it's your wedding too."
"Are you kidding?" Bruno said with a big grin. "I get to marry you! My dream girl, my best friend, the love of my life! I would be happy to marry you anywhere, anytime. This is a perfect middle ground to make us happy and make sure we can still share that day with all of the people we love most."
"Well then, that all being said–" Natalia began. "I did kind of have a date in mind to throw your way."
"Hit me." Bruno responded, folding his arms on top of her knees.
"Well, a little while ago I was going through my calendar from last year after putting up my new one for this year. I mark all of my singing gigs on the calendar, I pretty much keep my life schedule on that thing. I checked and it says that April 4th was the day that I was singing at the restaurant where we first officially met. That's only two months from now, so why not make it that day? It was the first day marking the best thing to ever happen to me–meeting you."
Bruno felt his heart melting at her words, thinking back fondly on the night they met and how he knew within seconds of seeing her for the first time that his life had changed forever. He looked at her with all the love in his heart clear on his face.
"It was the best thing to ever happen to me too, mi amor. That is absolutely perfect. Let's do it." He said, taking her hand gently and kissing the top of it.
"Really?" Natalia asked, her eyes wide.
"Really!"
"Eeeeeeeeeeeee we have a wedding date!!!!" Natalia cried, jumping into Bruno’s arms. He caught her and she wrapped her arms and legs tightly around him, both of them laughing excitedly. She kissed him several times quickly before he set her down.
As soon as Natalia was back on her feet she started pacing back and forth across the room.
"Okay, wow so many things to plan now that we have the when! There's the location, the dresses, the cake–do I make the cake for my own wedding? Is that like, against the rules? Agh, so much to think about!"
Bruno chuckled, watching her adoringly as she said all of her thoughts out loud.
"Just let me know what parts you want me to tackle and I'm on it." He said. "We'll get this all figured out together, and I know the family will want to help in any way they can."
Natalia sat down on her bed, suddenly going very quiet.
"How do we explain this small wedding thing to everyone? Do we just...tell them?" She asked.
"Yep, I think that's the best way to go." Bruno said. "As you know well, we're all trying to be more open with each other these days in the Madrigal family and not dance around things. This isn't bad news by any means, just an update. I think just explaining everything you explained to me will be more than enough, we can tell them together. I know everyone is so excited and thrilled for us that they'll be happy with whatever we decide on."
"I'm sure they will, for some reason I'm just so nervous about all of this?" Natalia said, anxiously wringing her hands together.
Bruno sat down beside her on the bed, taking one of her hands in his.
"You're nervous because you care, and how deeply you care about the people in your life is part of what I love so much about you." He said softly, tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear.
Natalia smiled, looking at him tenderly.
"Would you be ashamed of me if I went downstairs and ate my fifth muffin of the day?" She asked after a moment, making Bruno laugh.
"Muffin away, my queen." He said. "I'm hungry too, we probably should eat some real dinner here soon."
"We can be done packing for tonight, it's raining so let's just leave the boxes here and grab them tomorrow. Hang tight one second."
Natalia headed downstairs, picked up the bakery's phone and dialed the number to the casita.
"Residencia Madrigal, Julieta speaking."
"Hi Julieta, just who I was hoping to reach! It’s Nati."
"Hi Nati! You guys okay?"
"We're fine! I was going to ask if the family had eaten yet?"
"No actually, we were just starting to talk about dinner."
"I was thinking Bruno and I could pick up dinner for everyone on our way back from the bakery, give you a night off from cooking? I know you were out healing people in the town square all day yesterday, you've got to be exhausted. My treat."
"That sounds wonderful, but are you sure?"
"Absolutely, 1000%. I was thinking of grabbing the usual Madrigal order at Paolo's?"
"That sounds perfect. Thank you so much, we'll get the table set for when you get here!"
"Great, see you in a bit!"
Natalia put the receiver down and smiled at Bruno as he was heading down the stairs.
"Food is set! Your sister really needs more nights off."
"Agreed, and Paolo's sounds amazing." Bruno said.
Natalia locked up the bakery, they grabbed the takeout from the restaurant and then headed to the casita.
____________________
When Bruno and Natalia walked inside the house, they saw the whole family moving through the dining room, pouring drinks into glasses and setting the table up.
"Hi everyone! Food's here!" Natalia said with a smile when they walked in.
"Oh my god yes, I am so hungry." Camilo said, clutching his hands to his stomach dramatically. "Natalia, have I ever told you I loved you?"
"Once or twice." Natalia chuckled.
"Thanks for grabbing this guys!" Félix exclaimed.
"Thanks for waiting for us to eat!" Bruno replied.
The family got the takeout distributed and sat down to eat together and catch up on everyone's days.
"So," Bruno began during a pause in everyone's conversations, looking over at Natalia who gave him a small nod. "We have some exciting wedding related news."
"Ooh, tell us!" Pepa asked excitedly.
"We...have a date!" Natalia exclaimed.
"What!!! When!" Mirabel cried out.
"April 4th."
"April, like two months from now April?" Isabela asked, confused.
"Yes, but hear me out." Natalia said quickly. "Bruno and I, we talked for a long time tonight about what kind of wedding we want ours to be." She looked over at Bruno nervously to help her get the next part out.
"Natalia and I realized that what we really want is for this wedding to be a smaller, more intimate event." He said softly. "Just us and our families."
"The closer date is in part because I—I really want to make sure my tía can be there." Natalia added, her voice a bit shaky. "Having her and all of you there that day, that means everything to me."
"We know that's sort of breaking the typical Madrigal wedding tradition, but–" Bruno began.
"You guys, I think that's a beautiful idea." Julieta said softly, a kind and understanding expression on her face. The entire family was smiling back at them.
"I agree." Alma said. "Your wedding day will be perfect, because it's about the love you two share and the love we all have for the two of you. I know how much it will mean to Maria to see you get married, mija."
Natalia was deeply relieved at her words.
"We have had enough chaos in the last year and a half in this family for a hundred lifetimes." Luisa said, leaning back in her chair. "I can understand completely why you'd want to keep your wedding laid back."
"Absolutely, hermana." Félix said to Natalia. "We know all about how crazy a wedding can be, huh mi amor?" He added, smiling over at his wife.
Pepa laughed, playfully nudging Félix in the shoulder before she spoke. "The day will work itself out to be joyful and wonderful no matter what."
"Not having to try and wrangle the entire town for a party would be a nice break, honestly." Camilo chimed in, making Natalia and Bruno laugh.
"We're here for you no matter what, just tell us what you need and we're there." Mirabel said, smiling brightly at them both.
"Thank you all so much, I appreciate all of your words more than you know." Natalia replied. "I um–assume you knew all of this already, Dolores?"
Dolores smiled and nodded. "I am always for things being quieter, you know that."
"We're very excited." Bruno said with a big grin.
"So yay, April 4th it is!! Lots to do!" Isabela exclaimed, clapping her hands together.
"A toast," Agustín said, holding up his water glass. "To Bruno and Natalia, and their chosen wedding date!"
"Cheers!" Everyone said in unison, clinking their glasses together.
The family enjoyed the rest of their dinner together and Bruno and Natalia felt a big weight lift off of their chests. They were now more excited than ever to truly get into planning this beautiful, special day that was coming up in just a few short months.
