Construction of the first IND subway line along Central Park West at 74th Street, May 19, 1926. The Mack truck down in the pit is about to haul out excavated debris—a huge wooden ramp was constructed for that purpose. Gas and water lines on the right had to be relocated during construction. In the distance on the left, just before the cluster of trees, is the NY Historical Society.

nsfw g/olden k/amuy modern AU k/oito x t/sukishima snzfic
t/sukishima has a cold while hes away on a business trip and calls k/oito (who has the kink). they’re dating and refer to each other by their first names in this. warnings for written mess, m*sturbation, and slight discussion of kink-related shame. 2.9k words
i havent written fic in yeaaars and am just getting back into it so if it reads a little rusty that's why :') also my first attempt at writing stuffy talk so i hope it's alright!
also if for any reason this shows up in the search results for these characters please look away you didnt see anything 💀
“Home” was a modest apartment he shared with his partner, Hajime Tsukishima. Between Tsukishima’s salaried wage and the money from Koito’s well-off family supporting him through college, the two could have probably afforded something nicer, or something a little closer to the university. But that wasn’t rational, Tsukishima had said. Walking a little more and living a little lighter would be worth it to save money in the long term. Koito couldn’t argue with his partner’s sound logic, as much as he might want to.
---
Otonoshin Koito slumped against the subway railing, the doors hissing to a close behind him as he sighed. It had been a long day of studying in the university library and the sheer dreariness of it had worn him out. Being bored was exhausting. But that was over now! He’d finished his schoolwork for the day, picked up a pre-made meal from the nearby convenience store, and caught the train just in time to be headed home for the night.
Koito frowned—although the expression was near indistinguishable from the permanent scowl on his resting face—as the train began to move, quickly picking up speed towards home. Coming home lately didn’t feel as exciting as it normally did. Tsukishima had been away on a business trip for a few days, leaving the apartment feeling horribly cold and lonely when Koito would turn the key and open the door to a dark and silent dwelling.
Hajime, Koito thought, I miss him. He fished out his phone from his pocket to check if he’d received any messages from his lover since he’d last checked. It had been a while; he’d had to turn it off to force himself to focus at the library earlier, so he was pleasantly surprised by the notification reading that he’d received a voicemail from Tsukishima about thirty minutes ago. The happy surprise quickly mixed with feelings of confusion and worry in the time it took the man to find and extract his earphones from his bag. Tsukishima wasn’t the type to call out of the blue or leave voicemails. Was everything okay?
Koito shoved the earpiece into his ear, wasting no time as he pressed play on the voice message.
“Hello, Oto... Sorry to call you while you’re busy.” Was it just his imagination, or did Tsukishima’s voice sound a bit more... gruff than usual? Koito held his breath subconsciously.
“I just wandted to talk to you for a bit-” No. No, he definitely sounded congested. “Just to check ind and see how... hheh... hh-Excuhhhse mb-”
Koito‘s thumb slammed against the glass of his screen, bringing the audio playback to an abrupt pause. Only then did he remember to breathe, looking up from his phone to force his mind back to the present. He stared out the window at the scenery that raced by just as fast as his thoughts. Oh my god. Is Hajime sick? Koito felt his face flush as it hit him.
He pulled the earphones from his ear and stuffed them back in his bag, removing his ability to listen to the rest of the voicemail. It was his best attempt at self control. After all, the train was not the place to be getting worked up about his lover’s sneezes! Glancing out the window once more, he grit his teeth upon seeing that he was still a good few stops away from home. He was going to have to be strong until then. At least he had found a reason to be excited to go home tonight.
---
Koito made the trek from the station to his apartment in half the time it usually took, effortlessly weaving his way between crowds and passersby blocking his path. He sprinted up the stairs of his apartment building, a simple feat for his lean and fit body, and let himself into his unit at record speed. Kicking off his shoes, he hurriedly washed his hands in the kitchen and stripped off his day clothes in the bedroom—nonnegotiable hygiene essentials.
Standing there in his (expensive designer brand, of course) boxer briefs, he attempted to reign in his speeding thoughts enough to think of what to wear. Did he really need to wear anything if he was just going to get into bed and—
He shook his head, feeling a bit ashamed. Hajime isn’t feeling well! Don’t be a pervert! He decided to compromise and opted to throw on just a loose oversized tee-shirt. Flopping onto him and Tsukishima’s bed, he hastily unlocked his phone and re-opened the voice message to listen to and appreciate it in full this time.
“Hello, Oto... Sorry to call you while you’re busy. I just wandted to talk to you for a bit just to check ind and see how... hheh... hh-Excuhhhse mbe—! Heh-NNGXT!” A thick sniffle and stuffy exhale. “...See how you’re doing. I’mb back at the hotel for the ndight, so... If you wandted to call mbe back, I’mb free adnytime ndow.” A second of silence before a quiet, shaky breath. A low groan. “Fuck... Heh-NGGXXTSHhh!!” Another exhale and sniffle. “Excuse mbe. Talk to you later.” Click.
Koito buried his burning face in the plush bedding he lay on. God, he was already half hard from a couple voicemail sneezes. Was Hajime aware of what he was doing to him?! He'd told him about his unusual kink before but it hadn't explicitly come up since, leaving Koito to wonder if his partner had somehow forgotten about it. He sat up, leaning his back against the bed's headboard. It didn't matter. Tsukishima had said to call him back whenever, and he wasn't about to waste any more time. He hit the call button and put the phone to his ear. His heart pounded against his ribs as the phone rang a couple times.
"Hi, Oto," came the same slightly scratchy and deeper-than-usual voice he'd heard on the recording.
"Hajime! Are you alright? Sorry I didn't pick up earlier; I just got home." The words tumbled from Koito's mouth.
Tsukishima gave a quiet chuckle that quickly turned into a brief but rough-sounding cough aimed away from the phone. "Are you alright? You sound out of breath. Did you just run home or something?" The small smile on his lips was audible.
"...Maybe." He had hurried home, and he wasn't about to tell Tsukishima his breathlessness was more from excitement than physical exertion at this point. "Wait, don't avoid the question! Are you coming down with something? You sound pretty sick."
"...Yeah." Tsukishima sniffled and a short cough followed, as if the acknowledgment of his current state had suddenly allowed him to let his symptoms out. "I think I caught something on the bullet train coming here. It just took a couple days to set in but...” His voice trailed off, replaced by sharp, hitching gasps, quickly building up until the sneeze overtook him. Koito held back the urge to moan softly, feeling the blood rush to his lower body as he pressed the phone speaker closer against his ear in anticipation.
“HH’KNXXSSHoo! Ah... Ow...”
“Hajimee!” Koito cried, chiding his lover. As much as he was getting off on this, he still legitimately felt bad for Tsukishima. That half-failed stifle sounded painful; it probably scraped the man’s already sore throat. "Bless you, but also be careful!"
Tsukishima breathed a small laugh at his own miserable state. “I dond’t know why I evend... hahh... tried to... ah...” A moment of silence (or perhaps noises so small the phone didn’t pick up on them), before he mumbled, voice wavering, “Excuse mbe... I have to sndeeze againd...” His breath hitched, turning into deep, long inhales and exhales as the second sneeze took its sweet time, lazily teasing at his irritated sinuses. Koito's own breaths began to mirror Tsukishima's as he listened to the drawn-out buildup, Tsukishima's stuffed-up breaths loud in his ear going straight to his dick. Finally they reached their peak, the older man succumbing to the whims of the virus dominating his body.
“HEHH’DZSSHHHOO!! Heh-TSCHHHHoo! Ah... Heh...! HEH’TSCHHHhuh!!”
The sound emitted from the phone speaker was loud. Hajime must not have moved the phone away very much, Koito concluded. God, those sneezes sounded increasingly wet, he thought, unable to help but picture Tsukishima doubled over in his hotel room, thick spray and mess dripping from his cold-ridden nose as he worked through the fit. His cock twitched and strained against the confines of his underwear at the combination of hearing the sneezes and mental image they evoked. “Bless you, Hajime,” Koito breathed, unable to hide his vocal arousal anymore.
Tsukishima’s response didn’t come immediately; instead Koito heard him blow his nose, as if stalling before hesitantly asking, “Are you... touching yourself?”
Koito froze, a twinge of guilt filling him at the perceived accusation. Having told his partner about the kink, he couldn’t be sure that Tsukishima wouldn’t be offended by the thought that he was getting off on his uncomfortable situation. “U-Um... No, I—”
“It’s okay if you are,” Tsukishima interrupted, backpedaling upon hearing Koito’s defensive tone. “I... I want you to.” He pinched at the shallow bridge of his nose, staving off another tickle threatening to overtake him. Koito didn’t say anything, prompting the other man to continue. “I figured it’d be better if my misery could at least be put to use. And... I miss you.”
A wave of emotion swelled in Koito’s chest at those last words. Tsukishima was rarely verbally affectionate, so he was elated when he received even the smallest bit of it. “Hajimee,” Koito whined softly, “you called me just to let me hear you sneeze?”
Tsukishima didn’t respond right away, preoccupied with rubbing roughly at his flaring nostrils as the prickly irritation quickly spread from deeper in his nose. The movement jostled the loose fluid in his nose, the watery squelch of it audible through the phone. The simple knowledge that he was struggling to fight off another sneeze further aroused the younger man, and now with his lover’s permission, he took his fully hard cock from his boxers and began to slowly stroke it.
“Ndot just... hhh... so you cand hear mbe sndeeze...” Tsukishima managed through short gasping breaths, his voice thinning with the need to sneeze, “I also wandted to—hhih! ...H-Hear your vo—hh’ISSCHHHoo!! Heh...EH’ISSHHHHh!!”
Immediately following the second sneeze was a loud clatter, then the distant sound of Tsukishima sniffling and swearing.
Koito couldn’t help but laugh a little. “Bless you. Did you drop your phone?”
More rustling before a somewhat less distant sneeze— “IISCHHHHhhuh!—fuck.”—and exhaling another swear much more closely into the receiver. “Ugh. I dropped mby phonde and thend sndeezed all over it.”
“Bless you. I love you,” The younger man breathed, the smile on his lips audible but mixed with soft moans as he worked himself faster. “You’re so cute. Did you shake too much when you sneezed and dropped your phone?" He teased. "Are you in bed?” The questions kept flowing in his brain as he tried to visualize the exact situation his sick beloved was in.
Tsukishima flushed at the barrage of compliments and attention. “I’mb ndot ind bed... I suppose I should be though.”
“You need to rest, Hajime! I’m about to come over there and put you to bed myself!”
“I... wish you could.” It embarrassed him to vocalize his sappy desires, especially ones involving him needing to be taken care of, but his want to fuel Koito’s imagination prevailed.
Koito sighed longingly. “I wish I could hold you and take care of you and tuck you in and—”
“HH’ISCHHHHHoo!! Sorr—hh-EISSCHHHHH!! Sorry. I didnd’t meand to indterrupt.”
Koito’s lustful babbling dissolved into a loud moan, his hips jolting involuntarily, fucking harder into his hand. “Ohh... bless you, Hajime...!”
Tsukishima sniffled wetly in response, his tired eyes falling shut for a moment. Something about that last pair of sneezes had really brought forth his exhaustion that’d been building throughout the day. “I’mb going to put you downd for a second to chandge out of mby clothes so I cand get ind bed.”
Hearing the rustling of the phone being placed, Koito closed his eyes and pictured his lover beginning to unbutton his shirt, his nose red and damp around his lightly twitching nostrils. His lips would be chapped and parted; no doubt the man was so stuffed up he’d need to breathe through his mouth. Koito wanted nothing more than to slip his tongue into that open mouth and overwhelm his senses just the same as that cold virus was doing.
A distant, irritated groan preceded sudden sharp hitching breaths heavy enough for Koito’s perceptive ears to pick up on. He thumbed at the precum dripping down his shaft, the fluid wetting his palm to glide faster, smoother over his sensitive cock. Tsukishima was probably shirtless by now, exposing his shuddering chest and tightening abs as he built up to a sneeze, head tilted back in helpless anticipation.
There was a moment of silence before he heaved a long sigh and sniffled thickly, the sneeze seemingly lost. Then came the sound of his belt buckle unclasping and falling to the floor. More rustling indicated he’d picked the phone back up and was getting into bed.
“Okay. I’mb ind bed ndow.” His congested breaths came softly in quicker puffs now as if the exertion of simply stripping and climbing into bed had worn him out. He pinched and rubbed at his drippy nose, wet little noises coming through the phone speaker.
“Good,” Koito panted, “You poor thing, Hajime, you sound awful. You went to your work meeting earlier, right? Even while you sounded like this?”
Tsukishima coughed out a short sound of affirmation. “It was horrible,” he grumbled, “I couldn’t stop sndeezing and people kept looking... hehh... even though I... s-suppressed themb all...” His breath caught shakily. “Excuse mbe, I’mb going to—”
Koito’s mind swam with a plethora of images: Tsukishima red-faced and shamefully stifling his way through an itchy and desperate fit, his best efforts to remain unnoticed still drawing attention in the quiet meeting room. Tsukishima slipping out as quietly as possible to blow his horribly clogged yet still unmanageably drippy nose in the restroom, probably rubbing his poor skin raw on cheap rough toilet paper, miserable and guiltily missing essential work-related info. No wonder he’d been sneezing so openly all evening, he must've tired himself out stifling those desperate sneezes all day! And of course, he pictured the current Tsukishima on the other end of the phone, stripped down to his boxers in bed, drinking in heavy gasps of air through his chapped lips as he waited for the sneezes to overtake him. Brows furrowed and muscles tensed in preparation, warm liquid threatening to drip to his lips from his pink, flaring, quivering nostrils—
“HEH’IISSSCCHHHHoo!! Hhh... heh—!”
The sneeze tore through his body, so loud and so wet. Lying down must’ve made the thick fluid packed in his sinuses shift in a way that overwhelmed Tsukishima’s senses, prickling and irritating his nose horribly. Koito moaned a blessing, stroking himself rougher, faster, as the pressure to come built rapidly.
“HH’TDSSCHHHHOO!! Fuck...” A hurried series of sniffles and hitches followed the second sneeze. Staving off the urge to sneeze again as best he could, he apologized. “I’mb sorry, I’mb ndot... heh...! Great for condvers-hhh-ationd... a-at the mbombe—hHHIH’SSSHHHHHOO!!”
Koito could practically hear the amount of thick spray and mess his lover sneezed out, no doubt splattering cold-laced fluids onto the hotel blankets, down onto his bare chest, or freely into the air—whatever position Tsukishima had found himself in. “God, bless you Hajime. No, you’re doing wonderfully, you’re so hot, I love you.” He gushed breathlessly, dazed by his kink-fueled lust. Hearing Tsukishima gear up for yet another sneeze, Koito couldn’t take it anymore. “H-Hajime,” He gasped his lover’s name, “Hajime, I’m going to come.”
Tsukishima couldn’t even respond, still caught in the throes of his fit, nose desperate to rid his body of the itch. “HIH’TSZZHHHOO! ...hhh... HEH’TSSCHHHHHoo!! EH’TSSCHHHHHH!!”
Koito reached his climax, crying out blessings and “Hajime”s as the hot cum spilled from his cock, coating his fingers and dripping onto his abs, not unlike how the viscous mess streamed down Tsukishima’s lips and chin post-fit. They both lay there breathing together for a moment, though one was clearly more miserable sounding than the other.
The silence was broken by the sound of Tsukishima plucking several tissues from the box on the bedside table, rustling noises indicating he’d chosen to wipe himself up before blowing his nose thickly into a fresh tissue. Despite his efforts, his voice still left his lips bogged down with congestion, sounding even more groggy post-fit than he’d sounded before.
“God, Hajime, I love you. Are you okay?” Koito asked, his tone genuinely worried. He cradled the phone to his ear more snugly, as if trying to embrace his partner long-distance.
Tsukishima nodded, eyes closed, taking his time to respond. “...I just ndeed to sleep. ...I... have to get up early to go hombe tomborrow.”
Koito’s heart jumped a bit at the reminder they'd soon be reunited at and the newfound knowledge that he’d get to live out his caretaking fantasies as soon as the next day. “Oh, that’s right! I can’t wait to see you. I’ll meet you at the station!”
There came a mumbled noise of agreement, and then silence.
"I'll bet you're glad to get to go home now, then you can really rest properly in your own bed."
He was met with another long silence, no hitching breaths or anything.
"Hajime?"
Nothing. The poor man must’ve fallen asleep, worn out from struggling with his head cold all day. The thought was so pitiful Koito could almost cry.
“Goodnight Hajime. I love you.” He whispered, then hung up the phone.

Brightliners at Rockefeller by amtraknortheast1 Via Flickr: MTA New York City Subway Budd R32 3894 pauses briefly at 47-50 Streets-Rockefeller Center. After roughly 56 years of service (the transit museum will tell you 58 as the final run is occurring in 2022), the Budd R32 “Brightliners” are finally receiving a sendoff following their initial retirement from passenger operations in October 2020. Operating as a D train, the farewell train will continue down a branch of the IND 6th Avenue Line that will lead it to 7th Avenue station on 53rd Street before finally merging with the IND 8th Avenue line at 59th Street-Columbus Circle. 3894 displays a wreath on its front end, doubling as a sort of holiday special. This is the 2nd of 4 sundays of retirement runs, with the final run occurring Sunday, January 9, 2022 on the Q between Brighton Beach and 96th Street.
It’s a shame.
If I go back to NYC, now I’ll have nothing to wash my clothes against.

Encryption protocols
Encryption protocols play a crucial role in securing data transmission over networks, ensuring that sensitive information remains confidential and protected from unauthorized access. These protocols employ various techniques to encrypt data, making it unreadable to anyone without the proper decryption key.
One widely used encryption protocol is SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security). SSL/TLS encrypts data as it travels between a web server and a browser, safeguarding online transactions, login credentials, and other sensitive information exchanged over the internet. It utilizes cryptographic algorithms like RSA and AES to establish a secure connection and verify the authenticity of the communicating parties.
Another important encryption protocol is IPsec (Internet Protocol Security), which operates at the network layer of the OSI model. IPsec secures communication between devices by encrypting data packets and authenticating the identities of the sender and receiver. It can be implemented in various modes, such as transport mode for end-to-end encryption or tunnel mode for securing entire network paths.
Additionally, there's SSH (Secure Shell), a protocol used for secure remote access and command execution on networked devices. SSH encrypts data transmissions, preventing eavesdropping and unauthorized access to sensitive systems. It also provides mechanisms for user authentication and integrity checking to ensure the security of remote connections.

IP masking
IP masking, also known as IP anonymization or IP obfuscation, is a technique used to protect a user's online privacy and security by hiding their actual IP address. An IP address is a unique identifier assigned to each device connected to a network, enabling them to communicate with each other. However, this can also pose a risk to the user's privacy as their online activities can be tracked back to their IP address.
By using IP masking, a user can conceal their real IP address and replace it with a different one. This can be done through various methods such as using a proxy server, a virtual private network (VPN), or the Tor network. When a user's IP address is masked, their online activities become significantly more difficult to trace back to them, providing a layer of anonymity and privacy.
IP masking is particularly important for individuals who value their privacy and want to prevent websites, advertisers, or even hackers from tracking their online movements. It can help protect sensitive information such as personal data, browsing history, or geographical location from being exposed to potentially malicious entities.
While IP masking can enhance privacy and security online, it is essential to choose reliable and trustworthy methods to ensure the effectiveness of the technique. Users should opt for reputable VPN services or proxy servers that do not log their data and offer robust encryption to safeguard their online activities.
In conclusion, IP masking is a valuable tool for safeguarding online privacy and security in an increasingly interconnected digital world. By hiding their real IP address, users can protect their anonymity and enjoy a safer browsing experience.
Server network
A server network is a crucial component of any organization's IT infrastructure. It is a system of interconnected servers that work together to provide various services and resources to users within the network. These servers can be physical machines located on-site or virtual servers hosted in the cloud.
One of the main functions of a server network is to centralize data storage and management. By storing files, documents, and other information on central servers, organizations can ensure data security, accessibility, and backup. This centralized approach also helps in streamlining data sharing and collaboration among team members.
In addition to data storage, server networks also facilitate the sharing of resources such as printers, scanners, and internet connections. This allows multiple users to access and use these resources efficiently, reducing costs and improving productivity.
Server networks play a crucial role in enabling communication and collaboration within an organization. Through email servers, video conferencing servers, and collaboration platforms, employees can communicate, share ideas, and work together seamlessly regardless of their physical location.
Overall, a well-designed and maintained server network is essential for the smooth functioning of modern businesses. It enhances data security, enables efficient resource sharing, and fosters communication and collaboration among employees. Investing in a robust server network can lead to improved productivity, cost savings, and competitive advantages in today's fast-paced digital world.
Data encryption
Data encryption is a crucial method used to secure data by converting it into a code that can only be accessed and understood by authorized parties. This process plays a fundamental role in modern information security, protecting sensitive information from unauthorized access and potential breaches.
Encryption works by using complex algorithms to encode data, making it unreadable to anyone who does not possess the decryption key. This ensures that even if data is intercepted, it remains secure and unintelligible to cybercriminals or unauthorized users.
There are different encryption methods, such as symmetric encryption, where the same key is used for both encryption and decryption, and asymmetric encryption, which uses a pair of keys - public and private. Encryption algorithms like AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) are widely used to secure data in various applications and systems.
Data encryption is applied in various aspects of cybersecurity, including secure communication over the internet, data storage, online transactions, and protecting personal information. Businesses, organizations, and individuals rely on encryption to safeguard their sensitive data and maintain privacy in an increasingly digital world.
Overall, data encryption serves as a critical layer of defense against data breaches and cyber threats, ensuring that sensitive information remains confidential and secure. Embracing encryption practices is essential for enhancing data protection and maintaining the integrity of digital communication and transactions.

My DAD AND I agree on most things: Bloody Marys are vastly superior to mimosas. On YouTube, “Yoga with Kassandra” beats “Yoga with Adriene.” The Yankees over…is there even a question? (This season, maybe.)
But we can’t seem to settle one debate: Are e-readers superior to physical books? I, a millennial, can’t get enough of hard copies, while my baby boomer dad is enamored with his Kindle Paperwhite (from $140), which uses a unique no-glare lighting system to replicate a traditional reading experience more closely than a phone or tablet. It’s tough to operate at first, he said, but you soon get the hang of it. He also likes that it lets him control the font and its size, as well as brightness. “And you can stop wherever you want—you don’t have to put a bookmark in it—and it’ll take you back there.”
I was surprised to learn that many in his generation seem to be on the same page. Amazon says more than one-third of Kindle customers are 55 or older.
Vicki Strull, a brand strategist and packaging designer in Atlanta in her early 50s, is a Kindle evangelist. She initially bought hers in 2012, as a gift for her middle-school-aged children. After the device had collected dust for two years, Strull brought it to the beach on a whim. She was hooked, especially since the Kindle’s waterproof “pages” wouldn’t disintegrate if her soggy kids dripped on them.
Once Strull became a Kindle convert, she purchased one for her parents, now in their mid-eighties, who she says love it and heavily rely on it. “When my mother wakes up in the middle of the night, she uses her e-reader,” Strull said. Since it lights itself, the Kindle doesn’t disturb her father’s sleep.
Her kids don’t understand. “To this day,” she said, her now-high school- and college-age children “refuse to read a book on an e-reader.”
I can relate. I’ve tried a Kindle, but always miss the tactility of hardcovers or paperbacks. I love being able to scribble notes in the margins or fold over particularly captivating pages so I can revisit them later. Call me a Luddite, but the thought of my great-great-grandchild picking up my dog-eared and marked-up copy of Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s “Gift from the Sea” brings me great joy.
I don’t think that kid will ever find my equally loved copy of Heather Lende’s “Find the Good: Unexpected Life Lessons from a Small-Town Obituary Writer” in the magnetic dust of my long-dead Kindle.
Devin Smith, 26, a marketing and public relations manager in Brooklyn, N.Y., knows the appeal of print all too well, with more than 100 books crammed into her “tiny” apartment. “I love to collect all the books I have read as a tangible memento of the stories they represent,” she said.
Though reading is a solitary act, Smith says physical books invite connection with others. She likes reading on the subway and in parks and being stopped by those eager to know whether she’s enjoying the story or shares their (often strong) feelings about the author. “There’s something about the visual of a physical book that immediately opens you up to conversation with strangers.”
For other younger readers, a physical book offers a blessed break from a digitized life. Christopher Lee, 32, a health tech strategist in San Diego, finds reading e-books too much like work. “I try to consume and apply the information quickly,” he said. Hardcovers signal leisure and let him relax.
“Easier on my eyes” is Erica Riley’s verdict on real books. The 29-year-old public relations professional in Morocco, Ind., also says she finds the motion of turning a page so much more satisfying than yet more tapping on yet another screen.
Interestingly, the option to tap, not page-turn, is what sold Frances Spillane, 57, a Boston mental health counselor, on e-books. With arthritis in her hands, hard copies trigger pain; she can read a book on her iPad’s Kindle app more comfortably. And the e-reader app lets Spillane quickly search and access the large collection of therapy books she needs for work wherever she happens to be.
Still, Spillane experiences pangs for the printed tome. “I miss the feel of turning pages,” she said. “I sometimes buy a physical copy of my favorite books, just to hold it in my hands.”
Even my e-book-devoted dad, who has kept a hard copy of “The Catcher in the Rye” handy as long as I can remember, would understand that.
