Can you explain how to tell if someone is a powerful skater? In What’s Love and CSOI Try, I really focused on Scott and what came to mind when watching him was a sense of power, and a mega ton of it. Neither performance was fast and I can’t figure out why I came away with that impression of power. Scott isn’t the biggest, tallest or most muscular skater out there, but omg he made such an impression. (sorry, any other guy). Thank you!

When someone says ‘powerful skater’, what comes to my mind is their stroking, rather than their build. Scott was able to generate great speed with just one or two pushes, and was able to maintain it even during more difficult footwork. That’s part of why they were able to skate so well with so many transitions and holds, because they didn’t have to rely on crossovers to keep momentum.

On top of that, Scott had excellent posture - straight back, chest open, shoulders down - which is both a sign of good skating skills, and helps in the appearance of being larger. And confidence goes a long way too, along with that elusive ‘presence’ that everyone wants to have but not all achieve (or charisma or whatever you want to call it).

If it was just about size, then only most of the men in pairs, and a few of the ice dancers, would make the cut.
