I’m days away from properly releasing my Dano!Riddler x Super/Vigilante fic 😄👏 the first part will be up very soon, so it’ll definitely answer the many requests for it 💚 I've just finished off all my art coursework for final exams, so I've got more time to focus on full fics like this now 😅 It actually took me ages to come up with a hero name and traits for the reader, but I'm settled on Hope... I don't know, I think it's pretty cool, but you sorta have to read the fic to get it and not judge its simplicity lmao 😌 Here’s a preview of the beginning!! Thursday, October 31st.

You usually take the 'day shift', as Vengeance is always the shadows of Gotham's streets under the cover of the night's darkness. The people of Gotham know who you both are, as vigilantes, but in slightly different lights. There's The Batman, a dark and mysterious character you never see coming, someone who can scare off the toughest of thugs just by seeing his symbol highlighting the sky with a hollow circle, a bat in its centre. He's Vengeance, something fitting that he identifies himself as too, prepared to fight whatever and whoever persists in disturbing the peace, causing chaos, causing violence.

Of course, the violence and chaos still run rampant, but with Batman around, there are very few who dare to carry on through the night. He has terror on his side. You, on the other hand, have odd admiration and support.

Maybe it's the way you go about things, with your pure white suit outlined in gold, the hood that covers your head and goes perfectly over the top half of your face not quite as menacing as Vengeance's darkness and destruction. You're out in pure daylight most of the time, on rooftops, too high to be noticed, ready to jump down and stop the threats and attacks. Fight off the gang who's messing with a vulnerable older woman, then give her a hand up and get her home safely, smiling and waving at the stunned faces who see you leaving the scene with a friendly grin.

They called you Hope after just a few weeks. And that fits perfectly. That's what you want to be, Hope, because without hope, there's no strength to carry on persevering and believing in better. But no one knows who you truly are as a normal citizen of Gotham, the same as them not knowing who Vengeance is under his mask.

It's a surprise to everyone that you and The Batman get along. Truthfully, you and he made the decision to be vigilantes together. Bruce Wayne and yourself have had a brother-sister relationship for as long as you can remember. You share similar pains and understand each other without too many words. He's exactly like a fiercely protective and trustworthy brother, and you're the positive and determined sibling, practically opposites, but it works for you, always had.

But it's Halloween today, which means a lot more petty crimes and daring attempts of disorder and fighting. So you're both out tonight, stopping a gang from the subway from beating down a random man who got off the train at the wrong time. A younger boy is the last one left in the end, staring up at you and Batman with wide brown eyes, and you give him a small, sympathetic smile, as if to say, "This isn't the way to live your life, is it, really?" He seems to get it, and stumbles backwards onto his feet before sprinting off. You watch after him with an unfocused gaze, and The Batman nudges you from your side.

"What's wrong?"

You frown, shaking your head. "Nothing. It was just something I did yesterday. Well, someone I helped out."

"You saved their life," he assumed. "They were probably starstruck that they got to meet Hope."

But you shake your head again. "No, it wasn't like that."

It really wasn't. It was an incident similar to the one you had just come across tonight: you were just finishing up, ready to get back home and call it a day in the late afternoon, when a man walking with his head down was suddenly yanked from the main street into an alleyway. You were quick to spot the action, easily overpowering the young, drunk thugs demanding money, and the man you had saved watched in complete awe the whole time.

You just can't seem to forget that look.

Round green eyes behind clear-rimmed glasses, neat, soft bronze locks, simple clothes under his jacket. But he had stared at you while you fought in absolute wonder, his mouth open in disbelief. You had smiled at him warmly, taking his hand and pulling him up.

"You alright?"

And he'd simply stared at you for another long moment, before nodding slowly, stunned.

"I'm alright," he breathed, his eyes wandering your hidden face, a smile tugging at his lips that grew with the next comment. "You're Hope."

"That's me," you'd agreed with a smirk. "And you're a bit hurt, aren't you? If it's not too serious, you should probably go home and patch anything up. So, it was nice meeting you...?"

"Edward," the man had responded instantly. "I'm Edward."

"Nice meeting you, then, Edward," you replied with a smile. "I love your glasses."

Edward's cheeks dusted pink, and his smile twitched in shyness as he looked down. "Thanks."

"I should get going," you told him with a nod. "See you around!"

And Edward had looked back up with a mixed, unreadable, intense look in his eye, his smile matching it almost unsettlingly.

"You will, Hope."

And that was it. Why what he'd said and how he said it is confusing you at this point seems stupid to you now, and you brush it off, giving a reassuring smile to Batman.

"Whatever. I guess I'm still getting used to things."

Batman nodded, not entirely convinced, but deciding not to push it. Instead, his dark eyes glide up to the skies to take in the warning sign.

"Come on," he says, and you nod, following him to the rooftop, where James Gordon was waiting impatiently.

"Hope," he addresses you with a weary smile. "Batman. I need you to see something."

That something leads you to the Mayor's house. Or, the late Mayor's house. Because, as you and The Batman walk through the hallways, the FBI and GCPD crowding the rooms and flashing photos make it clear that Don Mitchell is, in fact, dead. Murdered.

You and Batman receive the usual questioning stares from the officers, though some who meet your eye nod approvingly at you. The officer guarding the door to the main room gives you a hesitant glance when Gordon leads the way, but shakes his head and puts a hand out to stop Batman from going any further.

"Woah, woah, woah," he stops him. "Police action."

"He's with me, Officer," Gordon assures him. "So's she."

"Are you kidding me, sir? You're gonna let him in here?"

Vengeance stares at the officer silently, and you watch with an uncertain, halfhearted smile.

"Martinez," James insists, "let them through."

Martinez sighs as he lowers his hand, and they carry on walking into the room. You smile properly at the officer in an attempt of calming him down, and he nods at you in slight approval before glaring at Batman.

"Goddamn freak," you hear him mutter, but you walk on, into the scene.

And, quite frankly, you've never seen anything like this.

It's the Mayor, one of his hands in a paper bag, his head wrapped in silver duct tape, with the red, bloody lettering of 'NO MORE LIES' written on the front.

"What do we know?" Gordon asks one of the detectives, his torch aimed at the once Mayor of Gotham as he snaps his notebook shut. His eyes follow Batman and then you, as you both get a better angle, your brows furrowing and face screwing up in disgust. All over the walls, the same writing of 'LIES' is scribbled

"Detective?" Gordon regains his attention.

"Sorry, Lieutenant," he starts, "we got blunt force trauma. Lacerations on the head. He got hit a lot of times. And hard."

Gordon examined the head with his own torch. "All this blood is from his head?"

"No," the detective continues, stopping abruptly before he bumps into Batman. "Excuse me. Most of it's from his hand." He pulls the paper bag away to reveal Mitchell's cold hand.

"Thumb was severed. Killer may have taken it as a trophy."

"He was alive when it was cut off," Batman observes, and the men look back at him. "Ecchymosis... around the wound."

Cameras flash and snap while you look around, spellbound at the sight. There'd never been anything as bad as this in Gotham. Never like this.

"Security detail downstairs said the family was out trick-or-treating," the lead detective says, "the Mayor was up here alone. Killer may have come through the skylight."

"You said there were two cards," Gordon asked, and the detective agreed, pulling out two green envelopes.

To The Batman

To My Hope

He opens the first one, where a cartoon image of a skeleton and an owl are on the card.

"From your secret friend," Gordon reads, "Whoo? Haven't a clue? Let's play a game, just me and you. What does a liar do when he's dead?"

"There's a cypher, too," the detective points out, handing him a sheet of paper with an odd type of code written on it in a plastic covering. Gordon hands you the second one when you reach for it, the one addressed to you, and he and the detective watch as you open it, Batman behind you with a focused glare.

It's a card similar to the one for The Batman, but there's a cartoon picture of a girl with a shining halo above her head, hands clasped innocently, big eyes staring. The title reads 'YOU'VE ALWAYS BEEN MY ANGEL!'

Your brows twitch in confusion as you open it up, and identical writing to the other card is written inside, this time with a much sweeter riddle, messy hearts scribbled inside.

"Made by God in pairs, separated at birth on Earth, found after years of search, inseparable for the rest of the time. What are we?" you read quietly, and you feel Batman tense from behind you.

"Soulmates," he says under his breath, and you look up at the disturbed, equally confused stares from the detectives. You look back down with a short sigh, studying the writing and looking back at the envelope.

To My Hope...

This killer, whoever they are, might just be making everything a whole lot more difficult. Because this killer, whoever he is... likes you.

no offence but max and mike literally have no relationship and all they do is disliking each other. people are like ''ohhh look mike was worried about max because max was gonna get unalived by billy!!'' yeah no sherlock i would be worried for someone's life in that situation too lmao its not like imma sit and watch them die? that doesnt mean they have a relationship? mike has spent the entirety of s2 and s3 dissing max. it's not even cute-y bickering, it would have been cutey bickering if they actually were shown to be actual friends who enjoy their company but continue to bicker. it's not like that though. they dont even have any relationship in S4 even though they are in the same school. dustin and max talk to each other but mike and max literally have 0 talk together in this season even though mike literally witness that max's nose was bleeding in the class. how about putting a scene where mike mentions about max's nose bleed to dustin or lucas to show that mike was worried? i am not even going to talk about the whole can of worms that is mike's monologue and how it is connected to max's death because it is just a whole different aspect of this thing.

...yah but in my heart they're begrudging besties idk what to tell you,, they're the same people different font and if they talked they'd probably realize they actually have so much in common 🏃🏼‍♀️

PLUTO AS AN IMAGINED NETFLIX SERIES + (PARTS OF) TITLE CARD

Here is pluto: the netflix series!!!!!!!!!! everyone close their eyes and imagine it... and pretend it's there and that it's good. okay. alright. i imagine the title card & credits bit to be more sophisticated- that's only a rough idea of how i imagined it hehe. writing scripts for shows & film is actually one of my writing dreams! visual media has been something i digest much easier than novels nowadays (just stating facts 😔 creating this blog is a part of my process of trying to get back into reading and Literature in general) and while things like shot composition and other aspects of filmmaking i'm less knowledgeable on, screenplays i find really interesting

Episode List

1. MORSE — Javi takes in a runaway. A young writer recounts his harrowing ordeal following his recent arrival to the town of Fell Island.

2. SWALLOW'S EDGE — Elsa adjusts to her new life, but her past keeps a tight grip. An experienced hiker finds themselves in a rocky situation.

3. WHAT'S IN A NAME — An odd presence visits the diner. A park ranger investigates a rumour surrounding the woods.

4. WONDERLAND — A chance discovery makes Javi question his decision. A determined mother shares her story and searches for her missing daughter.

tv pluto is a bit different than book pluto in that book pluto is, in my head, much shorter than how i imagine tv pluto to be (about 2 seasons, 8-12 eps max?? 😗), and so there would def be more content added that focus on the interpersonal reationships in tv pluto. things like storylines etc would have to be shuffled around & adjusted as well because tv and word are different mediums after all. also pluto employs the framing device - there's an outer story, concerning the customers & employees, human and non-human (wink wonk), and then they spill their tales, the inner stories; the idea of exploring that concept on tv pluto, especially with the added advantage of visuals, is cool!! and ,,, a little bit ambitious tbh since the outer story is also complex-if not more-than the inner stories. that being said the tales told during the episodes are pretty short and won't take too much of the episode time so actually hmm there'll be enough room for everything i imagine. the show would have the same vibes as these images

(CURSED™️). lots of scenes would b framed as if you were just looking in, a bystander watching these people, or watching thru the pov of the town itself as it watches its organisms' every move. notable songs in this soundtrack (i will post a link to the spotify playlist soon 🤪🤪) include strange fruit by billie holliday, and you are my sunshine, sung by johnny cash (after seeing annabelle: creation that song has not ceased in reminding me of demons LMAO). i'm a big fan of innocuous enough songs being turned into songs being paired w things that r the complete opposite of its original vibe u kno it's so Unsettling

Let’s get right into it, shall we:

Planning

I never do much planning. Maybe I should tho... I had this set in mind ever since I first saw that WenZhou scene in episode 32. The intimacy instantly reminded me of the two other scenes I included in this set. For some reason there’s always That Scene That Hits Me in danmei live adaptations!!

At first I had planned to do 6 separate gifs but I didn’t like the format so I decided to try overlays! It was my first time blending two gifs together. I think it turned out quite fine.

So I looked for the respective scenes, cut them into clips, and put them through Avisynth. I decided to go quite big so I chose a dimension of 540x400. (Usually my gifs are 540x370.)

I save all the clipped out scenes in a folder inside the folders for the respective dramas.

Creating

So, for the first gif I first imported the two clips separately. Then I deleted the extra frames for each one and sharpened them (also separately). For sharpening I use this action that includes converting them into smart objects. I mostly use the “Sharpening V1″ option, sometimes if it looks good also “Sharpening V2″.

Now I duplicated the Yunlan part of the gif (left side) onto the Shen Wei part. I tried the “Lighten” blending mode like HanYi explained in her tutorial, but it wasn’t right for what I had in mind lol. So I simply set the blending mode back to normal and added a mask to one of the gifs:

And I blacked out the area where I wanted the underlying gif to show up. So now it looks like this:

A bit sad, isn’t it? So in the next step I went through my usual colouring process: Brightness/Contrast, Curves, Levels (sometimes I use them, sometimes I don’t), Vibrance, Selective Color, Hue/Saturation. The biggest problem was to make the skin color vibrant but not too yellow or pink (somehow I always ended up with either of these).

(I’ll be honest, I don’t usually change this much. I don’t normally touch whites and neutrals at all. It’s just that this gif was pretty difficult to colour ksfhsdkjf)

This is what it looks like now:

I definitely wanted to include typography here, which is also something I did for the first time heh. So I’m sure there’s easier ways to do this but alas, here is how I did it:

I added a text layer and typed in the quote. I wanted to go for something simple so I turned to the good ol’ Verdana font. I wanted it to look like a box, so I played around with the space bar and manually adjusted the spaces between letters which you can do where the little VA symbol is:

After I was done with all my gifs (lmao) I decided I wanted to add the quote in hanzi too, as a transparent layer in the background. So I looked up the quotes in Chinese, pasted them into another text layer and set the blending mode to soft light. I also played around with font size and spaces. The font I used is one of PS’s pre-installed ones called FZShuTi.

Added the watermark, and done!! Then I repeated basically the same process for the other two scenes, except that I didn’t need to blend two gifs together for the last one. I had to adjust the layers for colouring individually since they are three different shows with different lighting, setting, and colouring and I wanted it to look at least a bit consistent (🥵).

Posting:

Yeah so I’m pretty impatient when it comes to posting but I queued this one to post in the evening as I do for most of my content. I loaded the gifs into a photo post, added an ID and the Darwish quote. It was quite difficult to find a quote that fit all of these pairings but that one hit me in the face (Mahmoud pls....).

Added the names of the shows and the episode numbers, plus a link to the set that finally convinced me to make this hehe (thank u Aamna).

HERE is the full gifset that i got tagged

1. planning

????? i’m one of those folks who don’t really plan anything ahead, i just go with the flow and wing it most of the times. i know i wanted that yellow/gold color in it but that’s about it. i just experiment with different scenes and typos until i get what i want. even though i have no actual clue what i want.

2. creating

here goes nothing. so basically after i chose the clips i layer them on top of each other and (pray a lot lmao) start playing around with them (blending, positioning, etc) to see how it looks best. after i decided how i want it to look like i just start deleting stuff with a layer mask. layer masks are great bc it lets you add stuff back easily if you make a mistake.

this is how it looked like:

1. with blending, but without deleting the additional stuff (no coloring) 2. i deleted the parts i didn’t need with a soft brush (still no coloring) 3. with coloring :)

i usually color it at the same time as well. with this one i tried to pay special attention to blacks, i tried to really make it to have a contrast because the blending works best when it has lots of black/white parts. so i just used a lot of exposure layer to make that happen. and for that yellow color i used a photo filter.

(i’m gonna leave out the typo here bc this is already pretty long, but if anyone would like to know anything about that, feel free to hmu!!) the font names are finches and avenir lt 25 light

3. posting

i usually post my gifs immediately after i make them. i do have some stuff in my drafts but if something is there for more than 2 weeks then i’m never gonna post it lmao i just get tired/bored of them and generally don’t really like them at that point. this one was different since it was for an appreciation week and it needed to be posted on a specific day. i actually finished making only a few hours before the day lmao like i said, i’m not really the planning ahead type, making this was an impulsive decision.

the silver eyes graphic novel and lettering

aka: the new fnaf graphic novel sucks for its medium (with pictures!)

I was gonna make a full post about all the issues with the comic in terms of panelling, shot composition, and color, but then i realized no one would read all of that lmao. But since I think lettering is one of the worse problems with the gn, I thought I would make a post about that

In comics, lettering refers both to the actual writing of bubble text (ie, typing out the text, picking font, spacing) and the logistics of bubbles themselves (positioning bubbles, bubble shape/size, splitting text between bubbles).  Imo this is the primary factor that gives tse its “juvenile, baby’s first webcomic” feel.

(it’s worth mentioning that i don’t think scott hired a letterer for tse, and although a letterer isn't always needed, comics produced without letterers usually come from people with a lot of comic experience. also, a letterer could have really elevated this comic in particular)

First of all, the comic works with square speech bubbles with angular tails which is...an unusual choice, because it allows for very little flexibility in terms of breaking the panels apart and gives the whole comic a kind of rigid feel, regardless of what characters are saying. 

We end up with huge blocks of text that are hard for a reader to process and give little indication of tone of voice:

It also means dramatic moments feel cheapened, because the dialogue seems to be happening all at once. For example, these two sentences should absolutely have their own bubbles:

I don’t think I’ve seen any speech bubbles broken up in any image I’ve seen from the comic, which is a huge issue. 

compare this to something like Chew, one of my all-time favorite comics, and how it structures speech: 

Sentences are broken up into different bubbles along the lines that the character would actually be pausing. It gives us a sense of his tone of voice and his emotion in this scene. The bubbles also flow along the horizontal panelling, leading us through the panel, as opposed to the bubbles in tse, which seem to just be placed wherever there’s space, as an afterthought rather than part of the planning the panel. 

There’s so much negative space in this panel, but not enough for a bubble, so it’s just shoved into the bottom without interacting with the panel at all!!

The actual lettering within the bubbles looks unprofessional as well, with the writing often seeming cramped within their bubbles (like in the first panel I used above) or spacing that’s simply uneven:

Or using capitalization (with an already capitalized font??) for emphasis rather than the traditional bold and italics:

It took me 3 reads to notice that “NEED” was capitalized. There’s a reason comics use bold and italics for emphasis; they actually show up in a capitalized font.

And let’s talk about onomatopoeia 

I’m sorry it’s just...boring. It’s the same font as the normal lettering, but with an outline, and other than a little tilting it gives us no sense of the actual feeling of those sounds

I’m gonna use chew for some good examples again cause i already have it open:

Even if you had no idea what breaking glass or blood gurgling sounded like, you can get a feeling from the way they're written

in conclusion: support ur local letterers, they make your comic not look like That

Maggie has been making gifs since 2014, and over the years they have gathered a diverse skill set that they use across many fandoms, characters, and ships. I love Maggie’s gif making style because although they are clearly established and capable of maintaining consistency, no two gifsets of theirs look or feel completely the same; while a lot of us tend to settle once we find our style, Maggie is not afraid to experiment with different effects, fonts, sizes, and colorings, keeping their content fresh and exciting.

MUST-SEE EDITS

Barry Berkman in Make Your Mark - This gifset uses color in a briliant and subtle way that doesn’t overwhelm the senses, but instead sneaks up on you with its clever coordination. Subdued, neutral colors accompany strong, vibrant hues, and the whole thing is topped off with a colorful caption. The gif of Barry in the shower wows with its striking green, and it is immediately followed up with perhaps the most impactful gif of the set. Maggie is a seasoned gifmaker who understands that sometimes less is more, and the gif of Barry against the black background plays well off of the colorful gifs in the set, breaking up the excitement for a small, dramatic display of the (metaphorically and literally) darker parts of the show.

Five and Diego - This gifset deserves to be appreciated for the bold choices Maggie made in creating it. They could have made it your average, “normal” colored scene that is driven by the caption text, but instead, they chose to bring out and emphasize the yellow background; if you make gifs, you know that yellow is not an easy color to work with, as it is difficult to manipulate without impacting the skin tones. However, Maggie pulled off this effect smoothly and effortlessly, using the soft yet vibrant yellows to draw attention to the scene and frame the action. Pay special attention to the third gif, where the coloring stays consistent even with the increase in the amount of motion.

Jaskier and Geralt: Please Don’t Go - While Maggie is highly skilled in using color in gifsets, they have also proven that they can do it all, as they post a decent amount of black and white gifsets. Black and white as a color scheme can sometimes be regarded as muting the full experience of a set, but not the way Maggie does it! They consistently use black and white as a way to further the tone of a gifset and let the font play a starring role in the work, and this set is no exception. The tone set by the sad but smooth motion of Jaskier walking away is bolstered by the text that reads “please don’t go” and fades into weaker lines. Maggie uses the effects of text not as just an element of their gifsets, but a storytelling device; they also know how to format captions in interesting ways that complement their gifsets, as this caption fades to grey in a similar way to the text in the gifs.

Shazam - This gifset uses vivid pinks and greens to bring the film to life, and the level of control over coloring demonstrated here really speaks to Maggie’s talent as an editor. The pinks, blues, and greens are all coordinated and match well from gif to gif, showing that Maggie has a sharp eye for coloring and a diligent spirit. The first gif featuring handwritten text in bold colors grabs the viewers’ attention instantly, and the brilliant pinks guide the eye comfortably through the rest of the set. The third gif wows with its yellows and oranges that give way to blue, and as always, the caption coloring fits perfectly with the gifset as a whole.

Steve and Nancy in colors - This gifset shows off both Maggie’s eye for colors and their mastery of text and fonts. Maggie used bold, bright yellows, oranges, reds, and pinks to bring this set to life, and they used the colors of the text to further the aesthetic. The fonts they chose play off of each other well, emphasizing certain parts of the text and softening others. The fourth gif features a stunning pinkish purple that draws the eye and holds viewers’ attention.

here are all the amazing easter eggs and references in the new movie Halloween (2018) !! it does contain spoilers and WHEW this list is long bc im the biggest nerd ever have fun

The opening credits are eerily similar to the original credits back in 1978 and also the same font the original movie used unlike what some of the sequels did. 

In the credits, instead of actor Nick Castle being credited as Michael Myers, “The Shape” is. This further alludes to the fact that Myers is not human and really is The Boogieman. Castle performed a majority of the masked Myers' scenes, so he's not necessarily playing "Michael Myers" in that sense.

In the beginning scenes, we hear recordings of Dr. Samuel Loomis, Myers’s original doctor/psychiatrist, diagnosing him as a demon saying “it needs to die!” Although it sets up the atmosphere of the scene as even more chilling, it pays respects to Donald Pleasence (Dr. Loomis) with his dedication to the franchise who died in 1995. Although it is not Pleasence’s voice, actor Colin Mahan did an excellent job bringing back Dr. Loomis’s iconic voice full of fear and paranoia to the viewers. 

Michael escapes from him being transported like in Halloween and in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers where a prisoner transport goes wrong. However, his escape almost exactly parallels the first movie. In both movies, patients are seen roaming around the field with the crashed bus but no Michael in sight. The soon-to-be victim goes outside their car to check out the damage and then goes back into the car without checking the backseat. Big mistake since Michael strangles his victim to death and steals their car to head back home. 

After Michael is found out to be the last missing patient, he is referenced as with “babysitter murders”. To the average viewer, this could mean nothing more than a simple refresher to the first movie but to a Halloween fan, it’s more than that. The original movie title was going to be “The Babysitter Murders” but was later changed to its iconic title. 

When Dr. Loomis arrives in Haddonfield to find Michael, his first stop is to visit Judith Myers’s grave, the deceased sister of Michael Myers. In this film, it’s the podcasters who visit the grave. 

Laurie Strode’s house, or sanctuary, in this case, gives a very similar vibe to the original Myers’ house from the first movie which first shows the viewers how similar Laurie and Michael have become. 

When Michael arrives at the gas station, there is a pickup truck that has “Resurrection Church” which could be a homage to Halloween: Resurrection (even though it was one of the worst movies in the franchise). 

Meanwhile, at the gas station, the entire scene plays out very closely related to Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers where after he escapes he also visits a gas station and kills all the workers there. 

Michael murders a garage mechanic and steals his utilitarian jumpsuit, which is exactly how he changes from a hospital gown to a pair of grease-stained overalls in Halloween 4.

However, he doesn’t just stop at killing the workers this time. His main targets were the two podcast reporters from the beginning of the movie who he kills in the bathroom of the gas station. In many of the sequels, characters have met Myers in public restrooms whether it be the first time or the last time which serves as an ongoing theme in the films. 

After Michael Myers escapes in the original movie, the scene cuts to Laurie and her friends walking down the sidewalk in Haddonfield discussing their Halloween plans, unaware of the horror that was let loose. This is very similar to the scene with Allyson and her friends but with a more modern conversation and sprinkling in Allyson’s grandmother’s paranoia. 

In school, we see Allyson sitting in the back of a classroom looking out the window while her teacher is talking about “fate”. This alludes heavily to the first film with almost identical movements. However, in the first film, Laurie’s teacher explains that fate is a natural, nonreligious element of our lives, so we’re destined for whatever fate has in store for us -- aka Laurie encountering Michael who will ultimately change her life. Allyson’s teacher, on the other hand, says the quote, “He said fate took a different course.” With some research, we learn the quote comes from a Holocaust Survivor named Viktor Frankl and said “The way in which a man accepts his fate and all the suffering it entails, the way in which he takes up his cross, gives him ample opportunity — even under the most difficult circumstances — to add a deeper meaning to his life… Here lies the chance for a man either to make use of or to forgo the opportunities of attaining the moral values that a difficult situation may afford him. And this decides whether he is worthy of his sufferings or not.” This alludes to Laure’s trauma and how she overcomes it by the end of the movie. 

The biggest and most obvious reference in the classroom scene is when Allyson looks out the window and sees her grandmother across the street staring at her, exactly the same to Laurie’s first encounter with Myers. 

When the Strodes are having dinner, Allyson invited her boyfriend, Cameron Elam. Allyson’s father tells stories to them about how him and Cameron’s father, Lonnie Elam, would “trip balls out in the woods.” This was the same Lonnie Elam who bullied Tommy Doyle in the original, and whose friends dare him to approach the door of the haunted Myers house. 

During dinner, Laurie arrives late and in a state of panic. She jugs down a glass of wine to calm her nerves which she does similarly during lunch in Halloween H20.

Going back to number 2 in this list, “The Shape” is credited to play Michael Myers. Although Myers is commonly called that by many fans, this name was never actually spoken until this film, At dinner, Laurie tells her family that “I saw him. The shape.” So FINALLY, fans can hear the secret name spoken aloud.

i knew this one was coming lmao

Loading Message… aka my pjo chat fic that for some reason people still read even though now rereading it i cant get through the first 20 chapters without cringing. buckle up everyone because theres a lot to go with this one

the title on my google doc is “title unavailable” because i like naming my drafts really unhelpful things and then i can never find them again, but it gave me inspiration for what i would inevitably call the fic. also fun fact its single spaced size 11 font and over 117 pages long, which means it takes a good minute and a half to load before i can actually edit anything, and another 2 minutes to scroll all the way down to the bottom

loading message actually didnt start out as a pjo fic that i had intended to post. it started out as something i started typing during free time in my english class and i shared the doc with my friend from my class because she would read it and crack up and i love making people laugh so i just kept writing more of the most random shit and inappropriate humor bc we were rebellious, emo, newly-founded queer 7th graders and i ojhklknshbk i cant read the beginning i keep telling you that but i cant. anyway one day i decided to just post what i had written (the first 12 chapters) all in one night, to archive of our own and it just blew. up. 

literally the day after i posted it my friend (different from before) came up to me during lunch and she was like “i have to tell you about this hilarious pjo chat fic i read. it has all the characters and theyre all dating and reyna and thalia are together and rachels there too and its so funny” and i was like. hm. theres no way. but THEN she started talking about these really funny scenes in it and ofc they were completely identical to what i had written and i just started wheezing and i told her that I had written it and that was like an inside joke with us for a year until she stopped reading fic. she was actually a huge inspiration for a lot of the chapters (she shared a 5 page doc with me with so many ideas, i wish i still had it tbh) and this is actually sort of sad but right when we stopped being friends, the spark i had for that fic died out even though it had been a long while since she read fic. (i actually still wonder sometimes if she still keeps up with it. god i really hope not) 

anyway, that sad part aside, i met one of my really amazing friends now through it! val aka jayjay-graceless and i started talking through the comments of loading message, and once she started writing her own pjo chat fic (which, lemme tell you, rip ocean man is typing… it was so much funnier than mine) and eventually we got a tumblr and stared interacting on my blog at the same time annie and cj had been (for separate reasons, i was a superfan of cj and annie was a superfan of me) and boom alabanda happened so ty loading message for giving me a new friend after i lost one 

i keep talking about rewriting loading message at some point and maybe i will because every innuendo i ever made and that whole weird solangelo sex plotline that i hate still to this day, but idk. i kinda like the history of it all. loading message is truly my trash baby and even though i hate that my most popular fic by a longshot is a crack pjo chat fic, im so grateful for the people that support it (this is really sentimental, its truly  garbage but ty everyone who finds it funny ily)

Episode 3

Clip 1 - Lying in the back of the truck

This scene was actually new. I think it’s supposed to stand it for the Eva/Jonas lying in bed when she kicks him out and her mom comes in, but most of the ideas and dialogue within the scene were original, not borrowed. They didn’t have Meg mention that Zoya said she should break up with Marlon, nothing about Marlon saying she couldn’t live without him though he was similarly dismissive. She does it in a text later, though, and he tells her she wouldn’t last a second without him.

This camerawork does feel like Julie a lot. Especially the overheard of both Meg and Marlon lying down, that’s some total Skam couple vibes. Except early on Meg and Marlon are not touching and aren’t even on the same level, because as a couple … they’re not on the same level, lol.

Well, I considered the dance team to be sports but Meg disagrees with me, I guess. If you’re funded by the athletics department, then I’d say you’re a sports team. (It might vary from school to school but my high school definitely counted the cheerleading and dance teams as part of athletics.)

Meg: Dancing is about art. Marlon: Nah I don’t think so. GODDAMN MARLON FUCK OFFFFFF

I know a high school dance team has a different purpose in mind than like, New York City Ballet, but dance is absolutely an art form. This isn’t controversial, dumbass.

Can you please just be supportive of your girlfriend, Marlon? She found something that might make her happy and she’s socializing with other girls.

Someone in the FB comments said Meg and Marlon are cute together in a way that Eva and Jonas weren’t and like, everyone has a right to their opinion but I’m going to make a PowerPoint detailing my opposing view, which is 100 slides of NOPE.

Clip 2 - Sloooooooow mooooooooo whiiiiiiiiite guyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Meg is actively lying to her mom about being on the dance team. At least she runs into some new friends when her mom says to tell Abby hi.

KELSEY’S EYEBROWS I’M YODELING

There are some parts where Kelsey seems a little too like a sitcom character. It has more to do with the writing/directing than the actress, who’s been doing a decent job and having fun with the role. The bit where she’s like “SOME people in the group” works perfectly fine as a joke on its own - we all recognize the absurdity of her trying to obscure the person’s identity when there are five girls in the group and everyone knows who Kelsey’s got beef with. You don’t need to add on “you know … Zoya” which is just overkill.

Zoya just got them 100 pounds of free cookie dough to raise money for the team. Or… y’all could eat it … not that this is what I would do or anything.

But good job Zoya! And now Kelsey has to reconsider her position on Zoya. Free cookie dough?

He’s called Penetrator Jo??????????????

“Why is he called Penetrator Jo?” “No one knows.” OK …. I actually find that kind of funny but also … really, Julie? That’s far more obvious inside the narrative than calling a character Marlon.

Now we have what is obviously the most important scene of the season according to certain parties: William/Daniel’s introduction.

I have a confession to make. Uhhhh … taken on its own, I sort of like this version of the slow motion montage over the original.

I was never wowed by William’s intro, and this one at least has some tongue-in-cheek choreography with the football players and has Childish Gambino over it (in my version).

But at the same time I’m like really?

I think if I just watched both scenes side by side with no further context, I would prefer this one, because it’s so OTT ridiculous I would assume the director was making a joke. However, knowing the full situation, with S2’s Noorhelm and William depiction, and Julie’s intense love of the character, it does spoil the effect, because Julie really does believe that stuff about William/Daniel being painted as a villain. Like there’s definitely a humorous component to the scene but it doesn’t work as well when the director buys into the character’s hype. Same with Grace’s unimpressed eye roll and her comment about him being a cliche: on its own it’s a welcome voice for the audience, and I’m sure it’s an entertaining comment for the shippers, but knowing that it’s going to be ironic later spoils the effect.

Thinking about it, I also feel the same about the Penetrator Jo comment, maybe. On its own with no context, I’d find it funny - there’s something ridiculous not just about that nickname but by the fact that “no one knows” how he got something that should seemingly be obvious, yeah? Knowing that show ends up being on #TeamPenetrator is not as fun.

And not gonna lie, part of me will just never get Julie’s love of the William character when she has created so many more well-rounded, interesting, unique characters, and William is a well-worn trope played straight.

On that note, I see the complaints that this is like a very typical American teen drama, and on the one hand I can’t argue with that, popular football player all the girls thirst over is a pretty common trope. But also, lol … the original was just like this, the William character and the Noora/William relationship were the most CW-ish parts of the show. No matter whether you liked them or not! 

Neither William nor Daniel are really my type so I’m not hung up on stuff like whether the actor is hot enough. He’s kind of just like … a generically attractive white boy. I saw four of those at Steak ’n Shake the other night. Not trying to be mean, I get why girls would like him, and I really don’t care about anyone’s appearance on this show. His bone structure does seem above average.

Girl Jo is so cute. “He has a lot of shirtless pics.” “She has places to be, that’s like, adult stuff.”

She is getting a little passive-aggressive with using Kelsey as her cosmetic guinea pig. Kelsey is kind of a pushover, isn’t she? There’s a dynamic to explore there, where the two of them are obviously BFFs but Kelsey is letting Jo commit atrocities on her face. I wonder if that will build to anything or it’ll be a running gag. Maybe Daniel, instead of telling Kelsey she’s not pretty or good enough, will just be like your brows are NOT on fleek.

Clip 3 - Marlon and his crew are the worst

Shay: “I don’t know why we’re arguing about this, you’re freaking rich...ly, killing it in that sweater.” Marlon is selling his Adderall, I’m calling it now. Shay doesn’t want to draw attention to the fact that Marlon has some spare change accumulating from somewhere. I guess Abby could be buying from him and that’s why she was all CALL ME?

That’s not a bad change at all from the source material. Because while smoking weed can get you in trouble, selling drugs can get you into even more trouble. It would also be thematically relevant to the theme of pressure, do everything to succeed, be a winner not a loser, etc.

The way they’re sitting is so (intentionally) awkward with Megan clearly on the outside of their little group dynamic and on a lower level.

They are eating the pizza and someone presumably paid for it already, so this is a strange conversation to have, but then again I have ordered takeout plenty of times with friends where one of us paid upfront and then the rest of us paid them back or covered them. I guess Marlon could have paid for it at the door? Still kind of a weird conversation when you consider they could have been like … looking at the menu and talking about what to order and arguing about who’s gonna pay.

Marlon is SUCH an asshole. DUMP HIM. He started to make fun of her about her dance team in front of his friends. Meg gives Marlon’s crappy music her attention, he can’t support her in her dance team?

This scene made it really clear that it’s not a situation similar to Eva, where yeah, Jonas and Isak did gang up on her and could be mean to her, but she was still a part of the trio. We saw them eat together, go to movies together, have little jokes together. Eva was friends with Isak. Megan is only here for Marlon. Tyler and Shay aren’t her friends.

Some of the joking here - like Tyler saying, “Wait, Megan, you actually became a stripper? You took my advice, bro” - in another context I could see that being fine, like if Tyler was saying that to Shay, it’s just friends taking the piss out of each other, but he and Megan aren’t good enough friends for that not to have any tension or awkwardness.

Marlon being like “I’ve tried to convince her that team sports brainwash people … guess they already got to her though” is so so insensitive. Jackass! This was something that made her happy and she had to give it up FOR YOU.

I am so so glad that she called him out though, and she’s right. He’s got a limited set of talking points.

But it sucks that Shay and Tyler got in on it and called her out. Her attitude about the Kittens was clearly motivated by hurt and resentment over what she’s lost and a person who has since made her feel like shit, not her overall attitude toward sports teams. I would think they would know that much since they have to be somewhat familiar with the Megan-Abby drama. Tyler especially takes it too far when this is not a comfortable situation for Megto be in, she’s not included in anything, she’s just the girlfriend who’s there. Like I do not blame Megan at all for having some interest in Jo, because even if he’s sleazy, he’s the one who’s paying her compliments.

Clip 4 - Party invite

Julie continues with her tradition of “shooting the protagonist from behind as they walk somewhere.”

Zoya telling Kelsey to chill and Kelsey immediately trying to chill … I feel like she wants to impress and go along with Zoya more than Vilde did with Sana. Kelsey seems like more of a people pleaser.

See, I heard people complaining that Zoya is too mean (and IDK, there might be some stuff to unpack there) but I felt in this scene she made her intentions pretty clear, that she was trying to help Kelsey calm down and not embarrass herself in front of the football guys, whereas Sana’s motives were probably the same but weren’t laid out like that and Vilde got pissed off at her.

I was kinda hoping that Zoya would be like “You are a hot girl” to Kelsey specifically but it’s nice she referred to the whole group as the hot girls. The only part I found excessively mean was the bit about Kelsey’s eyebrows (and I mean … she’s not wrong, but tact).

Jo is in love with Zoya.

It was sort of random that we pulled back a little and just watched Jo and Kelsey talk about her eyebrows, I mean that kind of casual conversation is fine, it was just the physical distance that was odd when so much of this series relies on closeups. We didn’t even see Meg’s reaction, not even to show Megan and Grace being like well, we’re done with this conversation and walking away.

There was an IG pic of the girls with Kelsey covering her eyebrows, which is adorable, but I’m not sure when the pic was taken because Meg is shown walking up at the start of the clip and Meg and Grace walk away at the end, and it looks like they’re in the same location. I guess Meg ran back to take a group selfie.

Clip 5 - American teen party with red Solo cups

I was wondering how they’d do the slow motion walk since I mean… they’d probably have to drive to the party, lol. And they did have them in the car! With the girls having a good time and Grace in the backseat looking awkward.

Actually I’m really glad Julie didn’t full on recreate one of the most iconic scenes of the original show, I prefer that she gave it a different spin. I don’t think this version of the scene will stick in my mind as much as the OG, but this does feel, well, American and relevant to the culture.

All the girls look great. I’m really digging Zoya’s hoops.

If anyone cares to know what I hissed at Daniel when he was checking out Kelsey.

I like how Abby seemed like she’s holding court among the Kittens.

I hate Marlon/Meg so much that even Meg/”Don’t be a cocktease” Jo is preferable. Though neither is the best option.

Part of me is like SIIIIIIIIGH at them not going to address Kelsey’s religion at all. It’s not that every Christian has to be abstinent or anything, I know Christian girls who were big on partying and had premarital sex. It’s that this is a big opportunity to shake up the story and add another dimension to the situation, and I feel like it won’t be addressed. I’d love if they at least talked about it in the next episode, if Kelsey’s trying to lose her virginity to Daniel and acquire birth control.

“I touch my friend’s boobs all the time” LISTEN UP JULIE ANDEM. Please let Jo be not straight. Please let Jo and Shay interact and possibly date. Both of those characters have some of the most personality on the show, it’d be a hit. Skam France set the precedent and made the equivalent character bi, YOU CAN DO IT.

I am overjoyed that so many people seemed to share my opinion of the world peace guy, which is Daniel who? Penetrator what? Give us more of THIS rando.

Honestly in his limited screen time, he has some decent comedic timing? He might be funny as the Magnus character.

That whole conversation was the highlight of the clip, the episode, and the series so far.

This is super random but I’m glad Meg and Grace went to the bathroom together because like … yes, that is what you do when you’re girls who are awkwardly standing around at parties. Bathroom solidarity.  And actually that’s a good setup for Grace leaving Meg alone and Jo getting to her rather than Noora ditching Eva to take a phone call. 

Marlon’s last name is Frazier for anyone curious.

“There’s another bathroom upstairs I can show you.” Smooth.

Zoya adding some food coloring into her Abby attack was an upgrade, particularly when the target’s in a white shirt. 

Jo taking off her earrings once the fight starts - she is the beeeest.

The shot of the girls climbing into the car is really cute to me, IDK.

I thought this was a fun clip but admittedly that’s 90% because Jo is a gem.

General Comments:

Some of me wonders … what if Tyler has it bad for Marlon and Shay has it for Meg? Tyler being “clingy” in the gc according to Marlon (which is just Marlon’s opinion and may not be that serious, to be sure) and Shay is noticeably nicer to Meg than Tyler is. I think.

Actually that text about Meg being added to their group chat made me cringe. They really aren’t welcoming to her. Meg has been dating Marlon since at least February - I’m pretty sure it was more like Christmas - and he’s only now adding her to the chat. Okay.

When Isak contacted Eva on Skype in episode 1, it seemed like he just wanted to chat with her. I guess maybe he wanted to sniff out if Jonas was there but he didn’t ask about it first, and he and Eva laughed about the Pepsi Max girls, and when he saw Eva was sad, he tried to give her some advice about talking to Ingrid. It was definitely a friendly conversation. When Shay did the same call, she asked where Marlon was, and after Meg said she didn’t know, Shay quickly said she had to go. It wasn’t a friendly, just-to-talk conversation. Meg tried to extend the conversation a little longer by talking about the Kittens - this makes me sad because it felt like she really needed to talk to someone, and Shay’s response isn’t that supportive or like she knows the magnitude of the situation with Megan and Abby. It also got me thinking because all of the Noora/William combos have been white across the remakes, and IDK, I think it’d be great if the big man on campus that all the girls found attractive was a MOC, but also - can you imagine if a William was black and how differently he would be judged on his behavior, provided it was the same as in the original? The black guy heartlessly using and throwing aside the sweet virginal white girl? Or the black guy relentlessly pursuing the white girl who said she wasn’t interested? Or the black guy smashing a bottle over a guy’s head? I feel like a black William would reveal some ... enlightening viewer reaction. To put it mildly.

I don’t really know how to judge the ratings because Facebook Watch is largely untested as a streaming platform, but there seem to be at least 1,000-2,000 new users following the show per day, maybe more (though stuff like fake/spam accounts need to be taken into consideration) and the full episodes are getting far more hits than the individual clips.

I just read all of Santis story. Dear god, it is amazing. I cannot begin to describe how much I love it.
