"The Gate to Hades" (part 3 in my Orpheus and Eurydice series)
Part3: But Orpheus is not satisfied to sit in solitary mourning. There was a great injustice in the death of his love Eurydice. If the beasts and rocks of the wild woods of Olympia bow before his song, what is to stop him for persuading the spirits of the underworld? Perhaps he can even persuade the King Hades to take pity on him and his lost love. With this determination, he receives directions to the dark gate from the forest nymphs and sets out. Many days later, standing before that gaping black maw, Orpheus shivers. He might never return to the land of the living. He steps forward. He has nothing left to lose.
In Greek literary sources we have varying references to the location of the entrance to underworld. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus must travel to Hades to  perform a “Nekyia” ceremony to commune with the dead to receive prophecies. Circe gives Odysseus the vaguest of directions; “…once your ship has crossed flowing Ocean, drag it ashore at Persephone’s groves, on the level beach where tall poplars grow, willows shed their fruit, right beside deep swirling Oceanus.  Then you must go to Hades’ murky home, where Periphlegethon and Cocytus, a stream which branches off theriver Styx, flow into Acheron.” – translation by Ian Johnston.
Some scholars believe Homer’s description of the location is based on the real-world temple of the “Nekromanteion” (oracle of the dead) in Ancient Epirus (Northwest Greece). This was a temple of necromancy dedicated to Hades and Persephone where devotees could commune with dead spirits, and was believed to be the entrance to Hades. The temple was located at the meeting point of three rivers; the Acheron (river of woe), Pyriphlegethon (river of fire), and Cocytus (river of lamentation).
Thanks for reading and looking! If you share this image I'll swim the river styx to.give you a high five! Xoxo

KATHLEEN HANNA ANNOUNCES MEMOIR, REBEL GIRL: MY LIFE AS A FEMINIST PUNK
Tumblr media
7/13/23: Kathleen Hanna has announced that she’s releasing a memoir in May of next year: Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk is out Tuesday, May 14, 2024, via Ecco (a HarperCollins imprint). The book will follow Hanna’s story from childhood to her college years in Olympia, Washington.
Kathleen Hanna's rallying cry to feminists echoed far and wide through the punk scene of the 90s and beyond. Her band, Bikini Kill, embodies this iconic time, and today her personal yet feminist lyrics on anthems like "Rebel Girl" and "Double Dare Ya" are more powerful than ever. But where did this transformative voice come from? In Rebel Girl, Hanna's raw and insightful new memoir, she takes us from her tumultuous childhood home to her formative college years in Olympia, Washington, and on to her first years on tour, fighting hard for gigs and for her band. As Hanna makes clear, being in a "girl band," especially a punk girl band, in those years was not a simple or safe prospect. Male violence and antagonism threatened at every turn, and surviving as a singer who was a lightening rod for controversy took limitless amounts of determination. But the relationships she developed during those years buoyed her--including with her bandmates, Tobi Vail, Kathi Wilcox, and Johanna Fateman; her friendships with Kurt Cobain and Ian MacKaye; and her introduction to Joan Jett-- were all a testament to how the punk world could nurture and care for its own. Hanna opens up about falling in love with Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys and her debilitating battle with Lyme disease, and she brings us behind the scenes of her musical growth in her bands, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin. She also writes candidly about the Riot Grrrl movement, documenting with love its grassroots origins but critiquing its later exclusivity. In an uncut voice all her own, Hanna reveals the hardest times along with the most joyful--and how it continues to fuel her revolutionary art and music.
you can pre-order Rebel Girl now though bookshop.org!

Last chance to sing up for the zine I'll make after attending Viridis Genii Symposium! I leave for a retreat place near Olympia, Washington in about an hour. I hope I have all the things I need. I've got two notebooks and two tarot decks and a backpack with a sleeping bag and whatnot.
I had a revelation that I don't know what I'm going to do with myself at an event that I am neither part of the organizers nor vending at. It seems silly, but I'm used to having a job at events so I'll probably end up volunteering to do something.
I do know one person going, they are zine friend, but they are also a presenter so I'm sure they will be busy with that. I had people who donated vote on the workshop I should add on. Of course if I asked a bunch of zine friends they would suggest the paper making workshop!
Okay! Into the woods and I'm leaving Ian B in the button mines and fields of zines.

Good morning Dr. Reames I wanted to ask you, what do you think that Christian Cameron compared Alexandros with Hitler, do you think it is a fair comparison? That is, there will be traits that all leaders must share to motivate a large number of people to follow them and come to power, but is it really true that Alexandros was the Hitler of his time?
First, let me say that Chris Cameron and I share some mutual author friends, so I know him “adjacent,” but we have never had a conversation. Let me also say that while I’m not a fan of his God of War novel about Alexander, I assume he’d equally dislike Dancing with the Lion (assuming he’s even read it). Authors are allowed to have different visions.
So, that stated, I had some pretty serious issues with God of War (GoW), in terms of both his reading of Alexander as well as his historiography. In GoW, he Mary-Sued Ptolemy at the expense of Alexander (and Hephaistion and Olympias, for that matter). Compare his “can do no wrong” Ptolemy (which seems to swallow Arrian’s history whole-hog) with Kate Elliott’s Persephone/Ptolemy in the Sun Chronicles…a much more nuanced portrayal, where—surprise!—Persephone/Ptolemy *lies* when it suits her…like the historical Ptolemy, who was establishing a dynasty, so he carefully curated his history. Basically, Cameron’s historiography is problematic as it doesn’t show much awareness of the tropes and themes present in ancient literature, and doesn’t properly “interrogate” the ancient sources for bias.
GoW is a very “het” novel although I don’t think he considers himself homophobic. Nonetheless, parts of GoW read as homophobic, and misogynistic too. Or it may just be that his sifting of the sources isn’t, IMO, nuanced enough to recognize the misogyny in the ancient sources. I doubt he likes (or perhaps has not even read) Beth Carney on Olympias. And I’m sorry, but calling a character presented as primarily homosexual (Hephaistion) a “bitch queen” can’t be anything BUT homophobic, unless there’s a counterbalance gay character somewhere in the (800-page) text, and there’s not. Having a gay character in another novel elsewhere really doesn’t count (and that gay character has other moral issues).
He has a military history audience, and he doesn’t dare alienate them. I’m not convinced he fully gets the problems in what he’s written for LGBTQ representation OR misogyny OR complex historiography generally.
As for ATG as Hitler, there are OH, so many problems with that. He’s read a little too much Ian Worthington and Peter Green (and Brian Bosworth and Ernst Badian, maybe), then taken it further. ATG was not the ancient Hitler. That doesn’t mean he was necessarily a good guy, or that conquest should be elevated in the modern world. But just as Cameron doesn’t seem aware of the various tropes in ancient sources and their impact on historiography, he also doesn’t seem to understand how to analyze ancient expectations.
There is, IMO, a middle road between simply condemning Alexander on modern grounds, versus undue elevation of Alexander and the “conquest narrative” found throughout the ancient world. Basically, Alexander pursued what he grew up to understand as a noble aspiration. Virtually nobody in HIS world would have critiqued that, only how he went about achieving it. That doesn’t mean we can’t critique it, but critiques that expect ancient people to think like moderns hitch on anachronism.
This is something I think Classics/ancient history generally is struggling with at present. How do we avoid making conquest into a thing to emulate, versus applying modern moral standards to ancient people?

Fugazi, Capitol Theater, Olympia, WA USA 5/8/1993 (FLS #0540)
I had high hopes for this one, as several pieces appeared to fall into place, leading me to believe that this just might be a recording and show for the ages, one to cherish and to enjoy again and again.
Set at the Capitol Theater venue in Olympia, Washington, a band-favorite where Fugazi would play certainly one of their most iconic gigs some two years later, this May 8, 1993 recording simply sounds great and features a promising set list that even includes a guest appearance by Stan The Man entertaining the audience with a bit of a House of the Rising Sun (The Animals) & (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding) improv to kick things off in rather remarkable fashion.
Ian’s familiar, comforting drawn-out guitar chords heralding Turnover follow suit and once this song hits, the band is off to an upbeat, high gear start with the next couple of songs. However, soon after, both Public Witness Program and Two Beats Off get cut short due to some lengthy altercations with a group of neonazi’s (or “Romans”) Sieg Heiling the band and generally disrupting the show.
There’s still an attempt to salvage and salve the situation at hand, yet Ian’s words leading into Long Division are quite foreboding, “this is a song called Long Division, and it’s about separation, a lot of people thought it was about math but it’s really not, it’s about separation, because sometimes in the world there are people that you do need to separate from, and there’s nothing wrong with that, because otherwise they just drag you down, and so forth.”
The poor company, or “Roman Emperors” are shown the door right after, which causes another lenghty interruption. Interestingly though, the following selection of songs (Blueprint into Facet Squared into Rend It) fits the turn of events quite well and most appropriately appears to convey the mood and position of the band on a number of related topics.
As such, this recording is an interesting entry and addition to the series, showcasing a solid performance once it finally does get going (23 Beats Off transitioning smoothly into Exit Only is a treat, as is the little “polka” improv into Repeater), yet probably not one I will revisit frequently because of the overly disruptive nature of the show.
Further note that a lyrical flub pretty much spoils Last Chance for a Slow Dance, and that the audio recording presented here is incomplete as can be concluded from the video footage (with generally poor audio) of the complete show that surprisingly exists (see insert above). Listening to this bootleg, it peters out eventually, and as such lacks the memorable jam and breakdown of Promises as well as set closer Sweet and Low in its entirety. Alas.
The recording documents 21 songs (Promises being incomplete as mentioned), taken off of In on the Kill Taker (7) which was slated for release by the end of June 1993, equally drawing from the Steady Diet of Nothing (5) and Repeater (5) album, as well as - to a lesser extent - from the 3 Songs seven-inch (1), Margin Walker EP (1) and 7 Songs debut EP (2).
The set list:
1. Intro 2. Turnover 3. Greed 4. Public Witness Program 5. Interlude 1 6. Two Beats Off 7. Interlude 2 8. Long Division 9. Interlude 3 10. Blueprint 11. Facet Squared 12. Rend It 13. Reclamation 14. Latin Roots 15. 23 Beats Off 16. Exit Only 17. Waiting Room 18. Bulldog Front 19. Song #1 20. Smallpox Champion 21. Returning The Screw 22. Runaway Return 23. Encore 1 24. Repeater 25. Last Chance for a Slow Dance 26. Promises

carlisle montgomery holmes (fc: christopher plummer, age forty-four) - the children’s father. a reserved, dutiful, and lonely politician, carlisle keeps his feelings close to his chest. he is constantly busy and away from home, but he does truly care for his family.
katherine clark (fc: elizabeth banks, age forty-five) - the children’s mother. ambitious, optimistic, and whip-smart, she was the american ambassador for a number of years and is devoted to her career. sweet, kind, charismatic; cares from afar.
olympia ivanna holmes (fc: michelle dockery, age forty-two) - the children’s aunt and the eldest of lisle’s younger siblings. she is similarly reserved and a shrewd businesswoman, incredibly smart and ambitious. however, pia is quiet, and is far more loose and loving around her family.
octavian isidore holmes (fc: henry cavill, age forty-two) - the children’s uncle and olympia’s (younger) twin. ian is a strong, silent type; very close to pia but distant from his younger siblings because of the age difference. he is something of a mystery and shows his love in subtle ways.
percival remington “percy” holmes (fc: charlie hunnam, age thirty-seven) - the children’s middle uncle. percy is warm, down-to-earth, and is unafraid to show his emotions, especially around his niblings and his younger siblings. he is definitely the heart of the family and is a caretaker through and through, often taking a parental role when needed.
lawrence aurelius “rory” holmes (fc: blake harrison, age thirty-four) - the children’s youngest uncle. rory has had some difficult times in his life but has been solidly in recovery and sober since elijah was a toddler. rory is fiercely protective of his family and would do anything for them. while he tries to put on airs, he wears his heart on his sleeve and cares openly and loudly.
máiréad esmeralda “maisie” holmes (fc: saoirse ronan, age twenty-seven) - more of an older sister than an aunt, maisie somewhat begrudgingly admits she was carlisle’s trial parenting run. she is currently trying for her doctorate at oxford and trying to make her own way in life. she is friendly, bright, and embraces mischief and chaos with open arms.

Mejor documental musical internacional: Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin, de Katia De Vidas. Mención especial: Music For Black Pigeons, de Andreas Koefoed i Jørgen Leth. Mejor documental musical nacional: Revolutionary Quartet: l’enigma Gerhard, de Xavier Bosch i Josep Badell. Mención especial: Riqueni, de Paco Bech. Mejor cortometraje documental musical nacional: Dol i fa sol, de Maria Besora i Pep Garrido.
Tumblr media
Teníamos muchas ganas de ver Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party, de Ian White.
youtube
Tumblr media
Completa nuestra lista Fatboy Slim: Right Here, Right Now, de Jak Hutchcraft.

"The Gate to Hades" (part 3 in my Orpheus and Eurydice series)
