Use of immortality in genshin is so neat to me. Cause it doesn't really exist??
One of the heavenly principles is that everything will one day be returned to the earth. For mortals this is ageing, for archons its the process of erosion. But not a single being in the world of Teyvat is truly immortal. It would've been so easy for hoyoverse to go down the traditional "divine beings are immortal, invulnerable and overpowered" route. But they didn't. The archons aren't immortal nor invulnerable and it makes them feel more human for it. They're also not overpowered either, they're obviously considerably stronger than allogenes as they've had longer to learn the ins and outs of their element.
There's no set 'level' for archon strength either, all 7 of them are at different levels to each other and experience setbacks as well as advantages depending on their environment or other varying factors (which is why power debates are stupid).
This makes the Tsaritsa's goal feel more fleshed out and more realistic. It's achievable with enough time and effort. There's so many games/shows/movies where you can tell very early on that the antagonist is pushing a rock uphill, they're fighting a losing battle, and it's refreshing to see hyv not take this route.
It's no coincidence that the Tsaritsa is the most human out of all the seven. Not just in that she apologises to her subjects, or understands what she's asking of them, but she's flawed. She's stubborn, she's a loner, she's proud and unmoving in her decision, she isn't accepting of criticism and she's narrow-minded, bordeline obsessive. She's had to harden her resolve because she was too benevolent. Ice is symbolic of all these things, and it would've been so easy to set her apart from the other archons and give her this air of superiority but they don't.
One may argue that regarding herself as the Tsaritsa of Snezhnaya is an act of superiority but I beg to differ. It's a downgrade from god, a monarchy is a man-made system, to be regarded as the Tsaritsa before the cryo archon makes her feel more human. It's an attempt at getting rid of that divine aspect of her person.
And I think, overall it's what sets apart the celestial gods from the archons on Teyvat. The archons can die, they can lose; they can experience grief, They face challenges and setbacks as they adapt with their nations, and they reap the rewards for it. They can feel achieved and proud. They're human. We as the player can relate to them, empathise with them and it gives them depth. They're nuanced and it makes the Tsaritsa's goal seem more realistic and achievable. Her motivation makes sense cause it's something we can empathise with.
The absence of these same themes for the celestial gods makes them feel less human, there's nothing to relate to. They feel empty and lacking. They're set apart both physically and emotionally from Teyvat.
Furthermore, cause I'm never done, there's humans cursed with longevity aswell. La Signora/Rosalyne, Dainsleif and Pierro. These 3 — as well as others that I haven't mentioned cause I'm not 100% sure of — act as a mental bridge for the player to relate the archons to Teyvat. Longevity isn't exclusive to divine beings which further adds to make the archons feel more human than the celestial gods.

Loras Tyrell x OC Male
Technically an Self-insert
Tumblr media
He knows which universe he’s in, from his last life he remembers pirating the three-season shows and having to look away from the screen every other second due to his confusion about what he was seeing. As if he knew he shouldn’t be watching for his age.
He was supposed to be killed as an infant but instead, he was safe by his only uncle. Turns out he wasn’t the only reincarnated but so was his half-brother Jon Snow known now as Jaehaerys III Targaryen. Then there is also his uncle Viserys III Targaryen and his aunt Daenerys Targaryen. His aunt is technically the third of her name but apparently, it only counts if the person before you was a ruler. There has never been a female Targaryen ruler so therefore she is considered the first of her name.
The four of them are reincarnated and they have this theory it’s due to their Targaryen blood. It’s not that far of a stretch after all Targaryen can command dragons, walk through fire, and have visions of future or past events.
All of them seem to be immune to fire but Viserys is the only one who feels pain from it and sensitivity to light. He and Daenerys have visions but Daenerys focuses on the past while his focus is on the future. Jaehaerys has a mental link to all of them. He’s practically the medical version of a phone call.
Viserys who is the oldest among them whether in this life or the last will never stop being flabbergasted on how long it took for them to realize they all had past life memories. Maybe it's an old age superiority complex Aegon doesn’t really know. Though Aegon and Daenerys died very young in their last life so they don’t really feel that deep connection to the past like Viserys and Jaehaerys are.
Aegon has this theory that their memories aren’t due to their Targaryen blood but due to their connection with the world they’re in. In one way or another, they recognize this world from one source of media to another from their worlds.
In Daenerys’ World, it was a cartoon for kids about dragons and royalty. In his world, it was a three-volume novel with a three-season show about Dothraki and Sullied fighting against the hierarchy. Though really it was just a premise for NSFW content instead of any actual real plot.
In Jaehaerys’ world, it was a comic about ice monster zombies that could only be killed by fire from a dragon fire. And due to the Targaryens being extinct the nation as a whole was screwed. There were even plans in the making to adapt it into a post-apocalyptic movie of what happens to the ancestors of the main characters' kids in the comics who manage to get over the seas.
Then there is Viserys’ world, the one with the most complex version of the story. When Aegon first asked Viserys about it he got a 10-hour rant about how much it sucked and that he hated it except for the Dothraki and Dragons. Although Viserys seems to hate this world he is oddly very passionate about, with his so-called ‘hate.’ Then again there is a very thin line between love and hate.
Aegon is just happy that the craziness of this world seems to be in a calm trance. Though he knows it won’t last for long but he’s content. He is to be crowned soon by his uncle, no longer needing to hide his true identity or the person he loves.
Everyone knows that Lores is his lover and future spouse and there is nothing they can do. It’s nothing new among Targaryens and it doesn’t matter as long as there is a blood heir. Which shouldn’t be a problem for him since apparently his cousin Rhaegal was birthed by Viserys. The number of secrets among the Targaryen bloodline will never cease to amaze them.
It might take a while before he and Loras have children, if anything it’s shocking it hasn’t happened yet. From how often they fucked like bunnies in the heat but then again he needs to bottom for it to happen. Ageon is willing to do it but it will take a while for him to get Loras to agree since his lover loves Bottoms and never thought of them ever doing it the other way around.
Sighing, Aegon turns around to snuggle Loras’ body under him while giving a kiss to Loras' bruised nape from all the love mites on it. It’s too early for him to worry about other events he’ll deal with later. And not on his own for he no longer needs to hide who he is whether be it his identity or who he beds.

top five leafy trees GO
oh hell yeah
First of all you simply cannot go wrong with a drop-dead gorgeous birch tree. I mean look at her. She's the runway model of leafy things. Absolutely nobody is doing it like her, they couldn't even try. AND have you seen her in the fall??? Can't be beat. Very beautiful, very powerful.
Second is aspens but specifically that tree in Salt Lake City, Utah, that cloned itself into lke 40,000 trees and allegedly goes back to the end of the last ice age. (Speaking of which: Ice Age the movie is an underrated masterpiece and I tell everyone to watch it. Unironically my favourite found family movie and my dad and I still quote various bits from it.)
Third is the pussy willow because there was one in my grandparents' backyard when I was a kid and I climbed that thing like a squirrel. Also the buds are SO soft. It feels like petting a fleece blanket. Crime against me personally that we no longer live in visiting vicinity of the tree.
Fourth is the cherry tree because it's just so friggin pretty. There's a few in someone's yard on the drive to the library and every time I'm the DiCaprio pointing meme. Ethereal. These trees are planted in the Undying Lands of the elves. So pretty.
Fifth is sweetgum! Look at that pointy little bastard. Even more beautiful when the colours start to turn because I swear this leaf is the one that always has 2-3 colours on it instead of just one. Living art piece. Majestic. Fuck those burrs though I can't say enough bad things about them.
Extra shoutout to my dad's favourite which is the yellow poplar. The leaves look like a cat's head when they're upside down. (Allegedly. I don't really see it half the time.)
Also extra shotout to the slash pine which is literally the only thing I miss about Florida. I am ambivalent to the pinecones (longleaf pines' are superior in every way but I do have a soft spot for pinyon pines because they just look like aliens). But there's something just really fun about seeing a whole grove of them and realising that yeah they just look Like That without anyone cutting the lower branches off.

Be My Baby Mama Pt 4
Tumblr media
Summary: Peter and SIM Tony accidentally end up pregnant when they spend a heat together. They decide to keep the pup but how are a superhero and a supervillain supposed to do this whole parenting thing? And what's everyone else going to say when they find out?
“Umm, Mr. Stark, can I ask you something kind of personal?” Peter asked, not sure if he was going insane or if it was actually possible. Stark raised an eyebrow but gestured for him to go on. “Are you on birth control?” Stark just looked at him like he had grown a second head, then paled for a moment before his expression totally locked down behind a blank mask.

As the first trimester really got going, Peter settled into life at the tower. He and Tony got to know each other properly, and sure, maybe it was backwards, but Peter was really enjoying their date nights.
Tonight would have been one such night if Tony hadn't had a business trip and Peter was feeling his absence. It wasn't the first trip away that Tony had gone on but they'd been pretty sporadic and Peter had really gotten used to having the other man around.
"Can you put a movie on please, Jarvis?" Peter said as he dropped onto the coach with a heavy sigh. Honestly, he wasn't much in the mood but it felt wrong to go into Tony's lab without him, and nothing else sounded interesting.
"Of course, Master Peter. Shall I also order you some Thai and ice cream per sir's rainy day protocol?" Jarvis asked.
"His what?" Peter asked, sitting up.
"The rainy day protocol, for when Sir deems that you are moping or otherwise having a 'dreary day' and could use a pick me up," Jarvis explained.
"He has a protocol for that?" Peter asked, flushing as he thought back to all of the random Thai days where Tony had surprised him with his favorites. "Wait, I wasn't moping that much!"
"Sir has a protocol for everything," Jarvis said, and Peter would swear he was being laughed at by the AI. "As to your mental state, I could not speak for that, only for sir's belief that you need cheering up when displaying certain behaviors."
Peter groaned and flopped back on the coach.
"Shall I activate the protocol?" Jarvis asked and Peter groaned again, burying his face in the couch. Thai and ice cream did sound good though, now that he thought about it.
"Ugh, alright, activate it, Jarvis, but not a word to Tony," Peter said. "I don't need him thinking I can't handle him being away."
"Of course, Master Peter," Jarvis replied. "Please enjoy the movie while you wait."
Return of the Jedi started and Peter let the well worn story lull him into a daze. A few times he caught himself going to say something to Tony, only to realize the Omega wasn't there. The Thai and ice cream lost its appeal as Peter realized he had to eat it alone. He managed three bites before packing the leftovers away while fighting tears.
"Is something wrong with the food, Master Peter?" Jarvis asked.
"Tony's not here to eat it with me," Peter retorted without thinking. He flushed and panicked when he realized he said it out loud. "Don't tell him I said that, Jarvis, please."
"It is normal to miss your mate when they are gone," Jarvis said and Peter marveled once more at how alive Jarvis was despite his synthetic voice.
"Yeah but-" Peter cut himself off, at a loss of how to explain to the AI that sometimes he felt like he was Tony's baby daddy, not a proper mate. That he was so much younger and less experienced, and still the older man gave him the time of day so he didn't want to be a burden. How to explain that every day Peter spent around the omega just showed him how amazing the older man was and how much he wished their relationship was more than just raising a baby together.
Somehow, in less than 7 weeks, he had fallen head over heels for the omega and Peter was pretty sure the other man didn't feel the same. He seemed to appreciate Peter's presence but it wasn't an all consuming flame that drove him to distraction like it was for Peter.
"It's just complicated, Jarvis," Peter finally said with a sigh. "And I don't want Tony to feel like I'm holding him back or that he can't trust me to stay home when he travels."
"I am sure sir would not feel that way, Master Peter," Jarvis said.
Peter ignored the AI and just curled up on the couch. He didn't feel like facing the empty penthouse or too alive AI that might give him false hope.
It was times like these that Peter wished he hadn't lost contact with his friends but the relationship had been unsustainable with his secret between them. And now, what would they say? He was in love and having a pup with an older omega who was the biggest arms dealer on the east coast while also being a billionaire who ran SI. They'd probably call him a liar or ask how he could be with someone like that.
It was frustrating, because Tony was so much more than that. He was a genius, always making improvements but not just to his weapons. He still supported clean air initiatives and climate change research, still donated to charities and kept a tight fist on his businesses so that innocents didn't get dragged in. And he could be kind and generous to those he considered his. Whether you were an SI employee or henchman in his less than legal businesses, Tony made sure you were taken care of as long as you were loyal and did your job. Peter knew it didn't absolve the man but there was a gray area there that Tony seemed to thrive in.
But most people didn't know that side of his mate. Would accuse him of lying if he tried to say anything because Tony also had a reputation to maintain.
**************
Peter hardly noticed time passing as he ignored his hunger and Jarvis. And maybe he was moping but so what, it wasn't hurting anyone. He missed his mate, missed having friends, missed having a life that included purpose. It was completely reasonable to be a little upset about that.
Apparently, the universe was against him though, because the elevator dinged and someone stepped out. The smell of pizza drifted over even as Peter's enhanced sense recognized Rhodey's footsteps.
"Hey kid," Rhodey said as he dropped the pizza on the coffee table and sat in the chair next to the couch. "Jarvis said you were moping but I didn't think it would be this bad or I would have broken out the chocolate."
Peter didn't say anything, curling further into the couch.
"Come on, kid," Rhodey said gently. "You gotta at least eat something or Jarvis will rat you out to Tony instead of just calling me."
Peter sighed but sat up and grabbed a slice of the pizza. Rhodey was silent as they ate but that was probably a good thing, because it was good pizza and once he started eating, his body reminded him of just how hungry he was. Finally though, he had eaten enough that he just leaned back on the couch and sighed.
"You know, loving Tony is both one of the easiest and hardest things in the world to do," Rhodey said out of nowhere. "He's a good man, but his life wasn't easy and there were so many expectations that he still tries to live up to today. So few people actually see the person he really is."
"That sounds pretty lonely," Peter replied softly.
"It can be," Rhodey said, his face unhappy. "It's also dangerous, but there's no telling Tony no when he gets something in his head."
"Yeah, he's pretty stubborn," Peter said with a huff even as he fought a smile. The omega was a force of nature and nothing could stand in his path and win.
"But you know, he's also the most generous and caring too, and once you're one of his, there's nothing he won't do for you," Rhodey said.
"How do you know you're really his though and not just an obligation or something " Peter asked softly, the question slipping out without his intent. Then he flushed when he realized what he'd done. "Nevermind, just ignore me. I'm just tired."
"Hey, it's ok," Rhodey said firmly. "You guys had an unconventional start, and you're definitely not the one holding the obvious cards in this relationship. But let me tell you a secret."
Peter looked at Rhodey cautiously, not sure where the older alpha was going with this.
"Tony adores you," Rhodey said and Peter couldn't help the reflexive scoff. "No, I'm serious, kid. That man thinks you're the greatest thing to happen to him, and that he bagged the best alpha out there. You could ask him for anything and he would make it happen."
"That's ridiculous. I'm nothing special," Peter tried to argue which only caused Rhodey to laugh.
"Kid, your superhero persona is like goodness personified, and you're probably one of three alphas in his life who respect him as a person, recognize his brilliance, and doesn't feel threatened by an omega being smarter than you," Rhodey said. "And on top of that, you gave him a pup that you want to raise with him despite being the aforementioned superhero. Kid- Peter- you could ask him for the president's head on a platter and he'd just ask if you wanted it gold or titanium."
"What- but- that's insane!" Peter squeaked. "Why would I ever ask him for something like that?"
"Doesn't have to be that, could be anything," Rhodey said with a shrug. Peter huffed and narrowed his eyes.
"I would never take advantage of him like that," Peter muttered. "Anyone that does is an asshole."
"And yet most people are just after whatever they can get from him," Rhodey said gently. "It's what makes loving him so hard, watching everyone try to make demands and him not being willing to let people help keep him safe."
"I won't let anyone hurt him," Peter said darkly, though he quickly flushed when Rhodey chuckled again.
"I know, kid. It's a bit belated, but welcome to the Tony Stark protection squad," Rhodey said. "And if you need any help keeping the dumbass in line when he's being particularly stubborn or stupid, you just call me or Pep. We gotta work together to keep him out of trouble after all."
Peter nodded, then yawned. A quick glanced showed how late it had gotten.
"Go get some rest," Rhodey said as he stood. "I think Pepper plans to drop by for lunch tomorrow, by the way, so you can plot to get Tony to take it easier while pregnant. Good luck with that."
"Thank you, Mr. Rhodey," Peter said, standing as well. "And have a good night."
"You too, kid. And just Rhodey is fine. You're my brother-in-law now after all, and that makes you family."
Peter saw Rhodey out then started to get ready for bed. The whole time he couldn't help but consider what the other man had said. Did Tony really think so highly of him? It seemed insane but why would Rhodey lie to him about that?
Peter tried not to dwell on it, and instead, turned his thoughts to Rhodey himself. The other man had voiced exactly how Peter had been feeling, and seemed to understand. He had even called Peter his family too. It had made him feel warm inside, and welcomed. Over the last few months, only Tony had engendered those feelings in Peter, and he had tried so hard not to lean on Tony for everything. It wasn't much, but having Rhodey call him family made him feel like maybe, just maybe, he actually did have a place here.
He'd talk to Pepper at lunch tomorrow and make plans to ease his mate's pregnancy. And hopefully, he'd also see if that offer of friendship and family extended to her as well.
******************
Tony had been exhausted since he returned from his trip but there were a million and one things to do before he could confidently go on maternity leave and if he wanted them to be done before then, he needed to get started. Alongside his work, he also needed to find time for doctor’s appointments, like the one scheduled shortly in medbay. Peter was supposed to meet him there so they could do the 8 week check up, and the poor alpha had been bouncing off the walls with excitement.
Tony sighed. He still didn’t know what he was going to do with his alpha. Jarvis had alerted him when the rainy day protocol was activated and failed, then kept him apprised when Jarvis called Rhodey in. Tony shamelessly watched the footage once he had a moment and created a new protocol as a rainy day back up.
Then he had spent a few hours in shock that the alpha cared so much. It still seemed unreal to him, days later, that Peter was honestly, truly in love with him.
“Jarvis, pull up the footage of Peter and Rhodey from when I was gone again,” Tony said, needing to remind himself that it wasn’t some crazy dream.
“Sir, I think you will find that the footage has not changed since the last time you viewed it,” Jarvis said, though he still pulled it up.
“Enough with your sass, J. I just need to make sure,” Tony retorted.
“Is it really so hard to believe that someone might care about you despite your somewhat socially questionable career choices, sir?” the AI asked skeptically.
“I’m a mob boss J, and a literal supervillain, and Peter- well he’s like the embodiment of kindness and goodness so excuse me for being skeptical that he could actually care,” Tony replied dryly. “It isn’t exactly every day that a literal superhero falls in love with the bad guy.”
“Oh, you’re going by supervillain now?” Jarvis asked, his synthetic tone mocking. “And here I thought we were still just using the morally dubious businessman title.”
“Don’t patronize me, J,” Tony huffed. “I didn’t program you for that.”
“Indeed, you programmed me to learn, grow, and talk back,” Jarvis retorted. “The patronizing I learned on my own.”
Tony sighed. On one hand, he still marveled at how far Jarvis had come, but sometimes he regretted his life choices when he gave the baby AI total freedom to grow.
“Look J, I’m not even fully human,” Tony said, pinching the bridge of his nose. “And even when I was, people only tried to get close because of what I could give them. No one missed me when I was gone or gave a damn about what I really thought. So it just made sense that they wouldn’t now either.”
“I think that speaks more to their character than yours sir,” Jarvis said, his synthetic voice still managing to convey his disgust in regards to Tony’s previous flings. “And based on my data, I find there’s nothing inherently unlovable about you. Though of course, I’m just an AI so my experience with such matters is limited.”
“Love you too, J,” Tony said with a small smile. His creation had always been at his side and stood beside him, so he was a bit biased, but it was still nice. And now he had an alpha who loved him too.
He just had to figure out how he could get the alpha to understand that he was Tony’s. That the omega fully intended to keep him, and there was no doubt in his mind that Peter’s place was at his side.
“Sir, I am sorry to interrupt your musings, however Master Peter is waiting for you in Medbay and your appointment starts in less than five minutes,” Jarvis said, drawing Tony from his thoughts.
“Thanks for the reminder, J,” Tony said, standing. Jarvis had the elevator ready and soon, Tony was in Medbay with Peter.
Everything ok?” Tony asked as Peter fidgeted at his side.
“Yeah, just excited, I think,” Peter said, his hands stilling for a moment before starting again. “Maybe a bit nervous. I’ve read all of the books on what happens at each appointment and everything, but well, I’ve never done any of this before.”
“Don’t stress over it,” Tony said confidently. “It’s going to be fine.”
“Yes, Omega,” Peter said, and Tony could see how hard the kid tried to appear not nervous as they were taken back to a room.
The appointment went fairly quickly as the blood test results were confirmed. He was already on the prenatals and didn’t have any other symptoms yet so he didn’t need any extra medications.
“Alright, ready for the best part?” the doctor asked, and Peter looked to Tony, waiting for an answer.
“Best part?” Tony asked.
“Yep. If the pup is feeling cooperative, we should be able to hear a heartbeat and get a nice picture while we’re at it,” the doctor said cheerfully.
“Oh, okay, that sounds kinda cool,” Tony said as the doctor had him lay back. His shirt was pulled up out of the way and Peter hovered at his side opposite the doctor. Tony grabbed one of the alpha’s hands, squeezing it reassuringly only to be blinded by Peter’s smile.
Tony rolled his eyes but didn’t let go as the ultrasound started. It took a minute but soon, the doctor had a small odd looking shape on the screen and was taking measurements. Then the doctor clicked the sound on and the fast paced bu dump of a little heart filled the room. For once, Tony was speechless. He had to blink rapidly at the sudden emotion that bubbled up in his chest at confirmation that this was real, it was happening. They were going to be parents.
He looked over at Peter to see the alpha’s eyes glued to the screen even as tears rolled down his face. Tony’s eyes flicked back to the screen and at that moment, he realized Rhodey had been 100% correct in what he told Peter. If the alpha asked for it, Tony would happily deliver the president’s or anyone else’s head on a platter. Hell, he’d even make the platter vibranium. Because this gift that Peter had given him, this pup and the devotion he had towards Tony, were the greatest gifts he had ever received, and there was no price he could put on it.
In the eight weeks Peter had been in his life, Tony had never felt happier, even with how turbulent things had become. He might not love the alpha, especially not in the all consuming way Peter clearly loved him, but Peter was his now, and Tony would make sure that Peter was happy so that the alpha never had reason to leave his side. Because Peter was his now, and he was never going to let him go.
“Tony, Tony– it's our pup,” Peter croaked, startling Tony from his thoughts.
“Yeah, babe, it is,” Tony said, gently squeezing Peter’s hand. “Our amazing pup.”
“Can we get copies of the picture for Pepper, and Happy, and Rhodey?” Peter asked, finally pulling his eyes away from the screen.
“Of course. I’m sure they’d love that,” Tony said, and he knew Jarvis was already having copies made for Peter to deliver.
“We should start a baby book too,” Peter added as the doctor finally finished. “We can make a digital one so Jarvis can compile the recordings like the heartbeat and stuff.”
“That sounds great,” Tony agreed. “I’ll leave that to you and J to work on. I’m sure you can set up some protocols so he automatically saves things for you too.”
Peter chattered about ideas for the baby book as Tony wiped the rest of the gel off and slid off the exam table. The topic carried them through all the way to the elevators when Peter suddenly stopped and turned towards Tony.
“Thank you so much, for letting me be part of this,” the alpha said solemnly. “I know you said it wasn’t in the plan, but I’m so grateful you changed the plan. I can’t wait to meet our pup.”
Tony drew Peter in for a gentle kiss before putting their foreheads together.
“I cannot think of anyone that I would rather have a pup with than you, my gentle, sweet alpha,” Tony said truthfully. “And the only reason I had never imagined a pup in my life was because I thought my chances of finding a good alpha that would accept me was less than zero. So it’s me who is grateful that you came along and changed the plans.”
Peter started sniffling again, and Tony gave him another gentle kiss before pulling back so the alpha could get himself back under control. He did make sure to grab the alpha’s hand though, squeezing it gently in support.

[ Maya Hawke, Genderqueer, She/They ] Oh, them? That's Robin Buckley, they are Twenty-Two years old. They are currently a [ Film Studies & Linguistics, Community College student and part time employee at Family Video]. I hear people say they are Witty, Analytical, Highly Intelligent, but also Blunt, Sarcastic, Verbose. I always think of worn down red converses, doodles on anything but paper, black chipped nail polish, an ungodly amount of VHS’, and meaningful looks exchanged between friends. I wonder what their favourite scary movie is?
˗ˏˋ Ooh, I think I found our morning movie - Doctor Zhivago ´ˎ˗

NICKNAME/S: Rob, Tweedledee, Trumpet girl.
BIRTHDAY: May 27th.
ZODIAC: Gemini.
SEXUALITY: Closeted Lesbian.
RELATIONSHIP STATUS: Single.
OCCUPATION: Community college student and Part time Family Video employee.

NOTABLE FEATURES: Light freckles litter her body, only really able to be noticed in the right lighting. She also has a small baby scar, less than 1 cm long from when she used to play soccer in her younger years and fell onto a rock, the rock being sharp enough to pierce the delicate skin above her elbow leaving her with a lifelong scar.
.·:*¨¨* Ou-yay are-yay ump-day. *¨¨*:·.
✧.* LIKES.
Late night drives (even though, she's yet to get her license).
Languages.
Sweaters and denim/corduroy jackets.
The idea of travelling (Just being anywhere than where she is right now).
Girls who seem to fall in love with sterotypical Jocks/men who peaked in high school, instead of her
✧.* DISLIKES.
Being backed into a corner. Robin is very much the type that no matter the social environment she is in, likes to know that she at least has one way of escape.
Being Isolated/alone. Robin can’t stand being by herself, she doesn’t like being left alone with her thoughts. Where she has no choice but to reflect on everything.
Hawkins.
Jell-0 (The texture itself completely throws her off, it genuinely gives her the creeps).
`*:;, Took me six months longer to walk than all the other babies :.,;*
✧.* HOBBIES.
Learning new languages, whether that be within an educational setting or in her own free time.
Making the greatest top ten movie list to ever grace the four walls of family video (while also slowly rating all, if not most, of family video's film collection).
Arguing with anyone, who dares to doubt that Mint choc is the superior ice cream flavour.
ੈ✩‧₊˚ Maybe, I’m happy by myself? Not everyone needs a relationship to be happy, you know ˚₊‧✩ੈ
✧.* FEARS.
Being outed and becoming a social leper.
Never being good enough, or living up to the high expectations those around her have seemed to have set for her.
Never 'escaping' Hawkins.
Watching those she loves die, she’s not quite sure how this fear came to be but it’s something that whenever Robin notices her brain slowly drifting towards it; she finds herself going through fifty-five unwarranted, internal panic attacks.
✧.* GOALS/AMBITIONS.
Finishing college.
Saving enough to run away travel, she just wants to see the world. After all, it’s not like there’s anywhere worse than where she is right now.
Getting out of Hawkins.
˗ˏˋ So like, I wasn't super focused in there or anything, but... I'm pretty sure that mom was trying to bang her son ´ˎ˗
✧.* BIO/HC'S.
: ̗̀➛ Robin was born to Richard and Melissa Buckley, two borderline teen parents.
: ̗̀➛ Due to her parents age, when they had her. Robin didn’t have the most materialistic upbringing, her parents barely being able to keep a roof over all of their heads but hey! At least they were happy…. For the most part.
: ̗̀➛Robin had always been naturally gifted at music. As a child, it was one of her only talents/hobbies that her mother enthusiastically approved of and encouraged her to improve on.
: ̗̀➛ Robin originally joined the soccer team as a way to bond and connect with her father. She ended up being part of said team for a good year or two. Before, she’d witnessed one of her teammates gruesomely break her leg. Something that’d end up causing her to leave the team. At least that’s what she said was the reason.
: ̗̀➛ Robin started learning languages at a young age as a way to pass her time. It was her distraction/escapism from the everyday loneliness she’d constantly feel in her life (something that was the result of being an only child and having very little friends, something that wouldn’t really change until high school).
: ̗̀➛ The only real friend Robin had growing up was Barb but Barb by their later middle school years, traded her in for the perfect and totally not a priss Nancy Wheeler! Something that to this day, Robin still hurts a little over.
: ̗̀➛ Robin held a deep resentment towards Steve Harrighton for majority of her high school experience, his cocky and aloof behaviour, along with his constant tardiness and the way he'd ask dumb questions; fuelling her distaste for him. But what really cemented her resentment of him during those years was the way he was effortlessly able to obtain the attention of her high school crush, Tammy thompson. Something that she was never able to do herself. However, she swears up and down, that she's completely over it now!
: ̗̀➛Robin has always known she was different, ever since she was a little. She just didn’t realise that, that difference was that she was a lesbian. Something she didn’t figure out until the very end of middle school.
: ̗̀➛ Robins never actual had a committed/serious relationship with anyone throughout highschool, even till now. Of course, she’s kissed a guy or two but besides that? Nothing. She’s always tried to argue the fact that Hawkins men just didn’t do it for her, or how she’d rather not risk catching something because, ‘hey, have they seen the guys they let live in this town’, or hell! How she just ‘doesn’t want a relationship’. Just saying anything really to push past the subject.
: ̗̀➛ Robins relationship with her mother is strained to put it lightly, she loves her mum and she’s sure she loves her too. It’s just her mother never seems to be satisfied or to approve of her life decisions or future plans, and has taken a habit of constantly pointing out her flaws and reminding her of them on a daily basis. Something she’s been doing to Robin, ever since she was little. She however, does have a close relationship with her father and knows that no matter what, at least he’s always there to support and love her unconditionally, regardless of all her little flaws.
: ̗̀➛ Academically? Robins college life is going well. It’s been worth every hard earned penny in her mind. However, Socially? Well, that depends on who you ask but in all honesty, it leaves much to be desired for her. She’s constantly left longing for some sort of real connection with any of her peers, something that doesn’t result in her having to put up some façade to keep those around her happy.
: ̗̀➛ Robin recently rescued a little black cat, that she’s affectionately named ‘Whiskers’. Something that has caused a few “you’re going to turn into a crazy old cat lady” comments from those closest to her.
: ̗̀➛ As mentioned previously, Robin still hasn’t gotten around to getting her license, the whole being poor thing and now having to pay her way through college, pushing it further onto the back burner. So, instead she either gets around via public transport, friends who offer her a ride or, her trusty two wheeler.
: ̗̀➛ After only just coming to terms with her sexuality and what that meant for her throughout her entire high school experience, she’s now began to question her gender expression. Something that currently has her conflicted and has her digging herself deeper into the closet.
: ̗̀➛ Trying to keep her mind off her internal conflicts when it comes to her identity and her family pressures, she’s been throwing herself even further into her studies and her job. Taking on more hours and tasks, than she can actually handle half the time.
: ̗̀➛ To be updated/continued!
✧.* PLAYLIST.
- TBA.

Creative Introduction
Avp reporting as ordered sir. I’m Ashley V. Pajarillo, a clone of my father, you can call me by my second name “Ashley”. I have a Clone personality. If you all know the movie “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”, that is where I got my clone personality. Clones are engineered to follow orders without question. I follow orders as long as it is good and will not hurt other people. I am the youngest among the two and I am close to my elder sister. We are six years apart from each other.
Ever since I was a child, I have really loved to play lego because I find it enjoyable especially when I build a piece of it. It is my hobby to play lego up to these days. I have a collection of it in my room. I also have gundams, star war clones, and dinosaur legos. I always watch the movies Star Wars and How To Train Your Dragon. I even share my interests with my friends who also love to watch it.
Growing up, I found out that I have potential in playing volleyball. It has become my hobby since then, until it became my sport. I am really excited to play volleyball with my friends and because of it I met a lot of people. I even joined our intramural volleyball team in National College of Business and arts-Cubao. Last school year, we won the championship among high school students. It was fulfilling because it was all worth it- our training and determination in this sport.
I find myself as an introvert because I only socialize sometimes and when someone approaches me. I also have this feeling of low battery, like a phone. That's why I am putting myself in power saving mode. I always think that I am a boring person because I always have nothing to say or I can say that I’d rather choose to listen than to talk but someone said to me that I am not because she really loves to talk and she wants someone who listens to her.
People describe me as kind, generous, rare, and they are scared of me when I get mad. I am thinking why they call me a rare person. They say that I am rare because this generation is full of men who's into bad things like smoking, drinking, and many other things that are against my belief. I do not even play with other girl’s hearts or even take advantage of them. I admit that there are some girls who confess to me but I am not looking to myself as someone who is superior. I felt shy when they asked me to take a picture with them. I just want to be myself and to have my own world and that’s why I know that I am an introvert. They also told me that people who are kind and rarely get mad are the ones who are scared to deal with when they are mad and I am one of those people.
There is a girl named Denise who came into my life when I was in grade 11 and she is in grade 12 that school year, We were at the same age and she always asked me to print her work. We always talk about something random every night, she is a talkative girl tbh but listening to her is what I liked the most instead of listening in class. She talks while I listen. Days passed and my feelings were getting clear to me. The academic week is about to start and I finally confessed to her personally. I've been her suitor for 4 months and now she is my girlfriend. I was so happy when she answered me, I told her that she answered me to the people who walked passed us even the vendor or the Iced coffee. I told her that I'll still court her and be better every day and I love her so much po.
I'll share something about my family. My Father is a cameraman in a sabong sport, it is a chicken fight to be easily understood. He is the one who supports us in our education and daily needs. My mother is the one who cooks for us and takes care of us. I'm not allowed to share this but I'll just share it anyway, my mom has been sick since I was younger, and I took care of her sometimes at home when the sickness was attacking, Sometimes she vomits, gets nausea (nahihilo), and body aches. I always try my best to take care of her because I know that someday she'll get better and I always pray to God to make her better and our Lives better.

Movies I watched this Week #114 (Year 3/Week 10):
Innocence Lost in Close, my 2nd sensitive drama by Belgian Lukas Dhont. Movingly and tenderly it details an intimate friendship - love, rather - between two 13-year-old boys. The script, style and direction are flawless and restrained, and the acting of the two amateur teens is pitch-perfect. 10/10.
I really should watch ‘Girl’, his debut film, again.
From the 5 Oscar nominees for Best International feature this weekend I’m missing only ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ by now. My favorite is still ‘The Quiet Girl’, with this ‘Close’ a close second.
🍿
3 from Portugal:
🍿 A landmark of Portuguese New Cinema and Paulo Rocha's underrated debut masterpiece The Green Years ('Os Verdes Anos'). A naive 19-year-old boy from the provinces come to Big City Lisbon of 1963, finds a job as a cobbler assistant, and falls in love with a pretty housemaid. Beautifully gentle and nostalgic, also leisurely-episodic and unrestrained - with a shocking finale. 7/10.
🍿 “...Everything I’m telling you is not reality, but tales...”
Tabu by Miguel Gomez, a black & white magical realist story of madness, obsession and colonialism. A heartbroken explorer commits suicide by jumping into a river infested with crocodiles. A kind middle-aged women tries to help her delusional neighbor who lives in the apartment next door, together with her black maid. A search for a mystery man who committed a grave sin many years ago and miles away. All those and more are mixed into a poetic metaphor of lost love and lost empire.
Mesmerizing and engrossing, melancholic and transcendental - The best film of the week!
(The only issue I had with the story is that it talks of the past in “Africa” instead of Mozambique, but maybe this is how they talk about it now, I don’t know)
🍿 Ice Merchants, a wordless, enigmatic story about loss which was Oscar nominated for this year’s animated short. It tells of a father and son who live alone in a cabin hanging on a side of a mountain thousands of meter above the ground. Every day they parachute in tandem down to the village below, to sell the ice they gather up there. And every time they jump down, they lose their hats.
🍿
Allegro Non Troppo, my first by Italian animator Bruno Bozzetto, creator of the ‘Signor Rossi’ cartoon character. It’s a low-rent Italian ‘Fantasia’, a light-hearted feature that showcases psychedelic animations to 6 classic evergreens, including a dance of sugar molecules inside a bottle of Coca-Cola to the tune of Ravel’s Bolero, as well as pieces by Debussy, Dvořák, Sibelius, Stravinsky, and Vivaldi. It specifically asks to be be compared as a parody of the superior Disney original.
🍿
2 by new French director Constance Meyer, both with Gérard Depardieu:
🍿 Another wonderful random discovery: Robust, a powerful debut feature by a young female director (who doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page). It’s a terrific story of two larger-than-life people: Depardieu as an aging, seriously-overweight and lonely superstar, disgusted with life and wishing to be dead. And a black, 22-year-old, 300-lbs. female wrestler who’s assigned to be his helper/bodyguard for a month, and who is not intimidated by his fame or reckless behavior. The two fantastic professionals develop an unlikely relationship without pity or allusions. The young no-bullshit security guard character (Déborah Lukumuena) is a revelation: she’s surprisingly well-rounded, highly-talented in her own right, strong, confident and sexual, with a skinny boyfriend she holds at arm’s length.
I loved its physicality, and will highly recommend it. The trailer. 9/10.
🍿 Mayer directed only 2 short films before ‘Robust’, both of them also with Depardieu: ‘Frank-Étienne Towards Grace’ (which I cannot find online) and Rhapsody from 2016. It’s an inexplicable poetic story of an old, heavy loner who lives in a small tower apartment, and takes care of a tiny baby the neighbor leaves with him every morning.
🍿
Naked Normandy (2018), a light and charming French comedy about French mayor Francois Cluzet who has to convince his villagers to pose naked in a field for a famous American photographer. Toby Jones is obviously Spencer Tunick, and the field he wants to stage his photograph is obviously Windows XP ‘Bliss, “the most viewed photograph in history”. 6/10.
🍿
My life as a zucchini, a stop-motion animated Swiss film that was Oscar-nominated in 2016. In Aardman Studio-style, it tells a sweet and sad story about a little boy who kills his alcoholic mom by accident, and who is sent to an orphanage with 6 other unfortunate kids. It was written by my favorite director Céline Sciamma. Heartfelt and compassionate. (Photo Above).
🍿
2 with Dean Stockwell:
🍿 I haven’t seen much of Francis Ford Coppola’s last 30+ years (Except of Godfather 3, of course), so I sought his 1987 Gardens of Stone. Another polemic of his about the Vietnam War, it tells of the guards at the Arlington National Cemetery who perform the military kabuki mass-burying dead soldiers. The theater is beautiful, but the drama is a bit outdated. With peak Anjelica Huston and concert promoter Bill Graham (who had a flourishing film career at that time), James Earl Jones, and many others. 3/10.
🍿 I didn’t realize that Stockwell’s career "spanned seven decades” and that he started as a child actor, with his breakthrough role as a young boy in the musical Anchors aweigh. A terrible story of two naive sailors on a shore leave in Hollywood, with thin, virginal Frank Sinatra, and buddy Gene Kelly, both acting and behaving like two six-graders who just discover ‘Dames’. Even the singing and tap dancing numbers are third-grade. It’s notable for the scene when Gene Kelly appears with the animated Tom and Jerry, but this is the only watchable scene that is not dull. 2/10.
🍿
Love letters from 1953, the first film directed by the actress Kinuyo Tanaka, who was the second woman to have a career as a film director in Japan. It’s a romance story about post-war Japan still bearing the scars of the occupation and assimilation. A former prisoner-of-war gets a job writing English-language love letters for females whose GI lovers went back to America. An interesting melodrama.
🍿
After loving the John Cho thriller ‘Searching’ (I saw it 4 times last year!) I was not looking forward to the director’s new “standalone sequel” (because sequels!). The 'Screenlife’ genre where all events are shown on computer, smartphones and tablets is clever, and the team behind it have already produced 4-5 movies just like that. The best thing to say about the new version. Missing, is that it’s exactly the same as the surprise hit from 5 years ago. The only difference is that instead of a father looking for his missing daughter. it’s the daughter looking for her missing mother. So it’s strange, they decided to go that way, surely for viewers new to the set-up. On the other hand, for the old fans, it’s completely redundant. 5/10.
🍿
2 new documentaries with 100% Tomato score:
🍿 Following last week’s discovery of Charles Burnett’s neglected black masterpiece ‘Killer of Sheep’, I was happy to dig into Is That Black Enough for You?!? Film critic Elvis Mitchell’s essay about the legacy of African-American film history from the silent era to its Golden Age of the 1970′s. Samples of hundreds of black movies that were lost, forgotten, censured and white-washed, left me with a big new list of movies to look forward to.
However, his encyclopedic knowledge of the topic was delivered too hurriedly and without digging deep into any particular point. The only overreaching impression is how inherently racist Hollywood’s Amerika had always been. 6/10.
🍿 Ron Howard’s portrait of big-time humanitarian / celebrity chef José Andrés, We feed people. Andrés established his non profit organization ‘World Central Kitchen’, which cooks for survivors after natural disasters. A mix of touching scenes of destruction, together with the usual TV-documentaries blandness. Not 100% for me.
🍿
Another Oscar-nominated Chilean docudrama - with “only” 94% Tomato-score - The Mole Agent, has a wonderful premise: An 84-year-old man answers an employment ad that specifically asks for a very old candidate. His job is to infiltrate a Santiago nursing home, pose as an applicant resident there, and investigate undercover if there’s truth to the claims of abuse toward the mostly female residents. In the course of the 3 months he lives there, he uses clandestine recordings, micro camera pen and Google-type glasses to send daily reports to an off-site investigator.
I guess it “is” a documentary, in the sense that obviously the location and residents are real, but it’s better not to regard it as a documentary in the strict sense, because it’s obviously filmed with a supporting crew and with the approval from the nursing home.
The very human stories of the old ladies at the end of their lives is moving and fascinating. 8/10.
This is my 26th film in 2023 directed by a woman. I am excited about director Maite Alberdi’s new film ‘The Eternal Memory’.
🍿
Following Elvis Mitchell’s advise (above), I started with Harry Belafonte’s brave 1959 Film Noir Odds Against Tomorrow. It’s an expertly-scripted plot by blacklisted Araham Polonsky, who was credited for the screenplay under another name. Crisp, tight and engaging classic about 3 small timers who try to rob a bank, ring leader Ed Begley, suave nightclub singer Belafonte, and racist ex-con SOB Robert Ryan who doesn’t want to take a job with a colored man. A terrific heist gone awry story with racial undertones. 8/10.
🍿
I used to like Bo Widerberg since his ‘Elvira Madigan’ days. His 1984 The man from Majorca is a highly-enjoyable Nordic style police procedural with cover-ups and conspiracies galore. It is often compared to ‘The French Connection’. The lead is played by ‘Uncle Gunnar’ from ‘My life as a dog’. 7/10.
🍿
After reading the new Atlantic’s portrait 'Schwarzenegger’s Last Act’, I watched Pumping Iron, the Reality TV documentary that put bodybuilding on the map. I can’t believe I was lifting weights too for about 2 years around that time. 3/10.
🍿
Predestination, a bullshit Australian science-fiction story, complicated and stupid, unfolded as a “Barroom story”. Pre-Succession doppelganger Sarah Snook (one as a woman and one after a sex assignment surgery, where she looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio) and horribly-playing Ethan Hawke ham it out. 2/10.
🍿
There are Jews in the world, there are Buddhists There are Hindus and Mormons, and then There are those that follow Mohammed, but I've never been one of them...
The meaning of life, Monty Python’s final film, aged very well! Still surreal, irreverent, funny and full of extraordinary violence. Also with 4 Superb musical numbers: ‘Every sperm is sacred’, ‘The Galaxy Song’, ‘The Penis song’ and ‘Christmas in heaven’. And some genial scenes and situations: “Find the Fish”, "Live Organ Transplants", "Oh shit—it's Mr. Creosote!". Also the standalone swashbuckling introduction of ‘The Crimson Permanent Assurance' (with young Max Headroom!). 9/10.
“NOW! Sex, Sex, sex....”
🍿
Throw-back to the art project:
Monty Python Adora.
🍿

MUN Q&A!
tagged: @shadowcovcn tagging: I think this is one of those ones I’ve seen a lot of my dash do already but feel free to steal it and tag me I’d be curious to see & learn !
𝐅𝐀𝐕 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐑(𝐒):  I like teals and greens best, in jewel tones
𝐅𝐀𝐕 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐑(𝐒): I definitely have a sweet tooth and people always associate that with like, storebought junk food/candy or whatever but that’s not what I mean (I don’t even??? really like candy or like, cake all that much tbh) I mean like....... teriyaki sauce and orange sauce and when bbq sauce is sweet/tangy (Sweet Baby Rays or get out of my face tbh) are better to me than foods that are like, spicy or salty or anything else. Honey mustard is the superior dipping sauce, ketchup can go choke. On a different note, hazelnut is a god tier flavor, and so is butter pecan, and coffee but like. Bold, dark roast. And chicken is always > beef, except for top ramen, where the beef flavor reigns supreme. All ice cream is good ice cream (but the best ones are coffee, hazelnut, butter pecan, cookie dough, and genuinely just. homemade vanilla. straight up, I am not joking.) Fruit in general but in particular the ones that are kind of tart like cranberry and raspberry and green apple and you know what this is such a broad question how do normal people answer this am I supposed to have a favorite from one genre of food that kings the others???????
𝐅𝐀𝐕 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐑𝐄(𝐒): Character driven is the main thing, I think? Like literally I will dabble in any genre (both like, ‘consuming’ and creating it) if I can find characters, people, there who are good or genuine or good and genuine. But I do also admittedly like... like incredibly predictable feel-good variety stuff is my safe space and I’m very happy in it thank you for asking. netf.lix never knows what to recommend to me because I will sit here and watch like, The Silence of the Lambs back to back with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and rate them both with the double thumbs up “I love this!!”. cloudy with a chance of meatballs is fucking hilarious btw
𝐅𝐀𝐕 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂:  I tend to lean towards indie and alternative stuff, but also some mainstream rock and poppunk. At this point MC.R is like, hardwired into me or something, and Bastille has been my top artist running on like three or four years now. I also really love soundtrack(-style) music.
𝐅𝐀𝐕 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄(𝐒):  Every time I make a list it’s different and I don’t want to dig through my brain drawers right now would u like (this post) where I answered this one time (while also knowing that for every time I have ever answered this I have left things out I really like movies)
𝐅𝐀𝐕 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒:  oh uhhhhh wow i haven’t given this a think in a hot minute lets go with: Sense8, Jul.ie and the Ph.antoms, The OA, The Hau.ntin.g of Hill H.ou.se (most of Mi.ke F’s work but specifically THOHH really...10/10), The Get Down, Dark Crystal Age of Resistance uhhhhhhh. I dunno. Lots of stuff. Gosh so many of these are n.etfli.x produced, but in my defense I’ve never been....exceedingly into television??????? Episodic content just doesn’t brr the brain as much I guess I dunno. I used to read more than I watched stuff
𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆: Itch, Nothing But Thieves
𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒:  ...uhhhh I think? the last thing I finished was Gam.e of Th,ron/es?
𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐓 𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄:  I went to sleep with something on the other day and I genuinely do not remember what it was
𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆:  I am not, but I have “A Venom Dark and Sweet” by Judy I. Lin on standby as something I intend to start. Soon. Sometime.
𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆:  im gonna write it in words instead of how it’s sylized because i would desparately like to stay out of that very active tag at the moment: Eighteen-Ninety-Nine. Also i’m watching Titan.s(SeasonFour) as it airs (on thursdays!) Oh and technically I have started Dark Angel, and I have been thinking about properly diving into it
𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐘 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍:  Some smallish starters across this blog and my multi, technically I have thhhhhhree? .. fourish, drabbles I’ve been poking at that...will in theory be posted at some point
as additional note not on this question form i am currently thinking real hard about dying my hair

modern gavroche and his brothers
-gavroche's two brothers are surrendered to an orphanage because at that point the thenardiers arent willing to parent anymore. they werent even willing to parent after azelma. so before any of them really have a chance to remember they technically have two little brothers, the babies are gone
-flashforward some years later gavroche is just living his usual life. he doesn't go to school, wanders around the city, and rides around on the metro until he gets bored
-one day, gavroche is humming to himself and walking down the street and notices these two little boys in backpacks oohing and aahing at something in a store window. he's curious by nature, so he walks over and stands next to them as he glances inside. it's a cafe with a little pastry that's iced to look like little turtles
-the littler boy is saying that he really wants it, but the other boy is saying that he doesn't have any money. gavroche looks them over- they're wearing very plain but very presentable clothing, with the same backpacks. they seemed to be doing alright
-so gavroche asks "why dont you just ask your parents to buy it for you?" because they must have the kind of parents in movies that seem to buy their children anything and play catch with them when they get back from school
-they two boys blink at him and the little one just says "we don't have parents"
-gavroche blinks back and thinks about his own mom n pop, the ones that ignore him unless he's in their way, ending in a world of hurt for him. so he shrugs and goes "i guess i dont really have any either" but he does have a wad of cash montparnasse gave him after betting he could beat the kid in the a video game. "You wanna try them?"
-he has enough for three pastries and a soda, so he and the three boys sit at a table outside and eat their turtle treats. gavroche finds that he's the oldest of them all by two years, the other boys live at the orphanage and go to the same school that he's technically enrolled in, and the two are brothers. which makes sense, he supposes. they're both speckles w freckles and have cowlicks in their hair. They kind of remind him of eponine, in a way
-and again, gavroche is curious by nature, so he sort of just interviews them for a while. "why dont you have parents?" - "idk, we've always lived at the orphanage" / "how do you know if you're brothers if you dont have parents?" - "i know he is" the littler boy says "i just know" / "what's your favorite game?" - "we dont really know any games" - "WHAT!"
-gavroche has never met anybody without a favorite game. even the quiet giant guy who occasionally works for his dad had a favorite game when gavroche asked (he said he liked online checkers). this news of these two little boys not having any favorite games is extremely upsetting, therefore he chooses to spend the rest of his cash on taking them to an arcade he really likes. gavroche introduces them to all of his favorites and promises that one day they can come over and play minecraft and fortnite with him bc gavroche is twelve and twelve year old boys love minecraft and fortnite
-he winds up walking them back to the orphanage in the evening because they say they'll get into trouble with their head lady if they're past curfew. he waves goodbye to them and feels a surge of something in his chest. it's hard to explain. he's never really had friends his age before. he wants to buy them more pastries and show them more games and show them the best places to watch tourists getting scammed
-the next few days gavroche waits around the school. he has another handful of cash he stole from his dad's stash and he wants to see them. he never learned their names, but he's affectionately thought of the little one as nitwit and the older one as nimrod. theyre both a little empty-headed and gullible but they're kids and from his superior Twelve Year Old Perspective, he's their elder and must look out for the lil guys
-they run into each other again. nitwit immediately waves and runs over with nimrod close behind. they follow gavroche around like two little ducks
-instead of an elephant, they have an Office. their office is the building the thenardier's live above. it used to be an old glasses store before going out of business. gavroche is pretty good at picking locks and exploring and found a way in through the back. he's kept this a secret for a long long time. when he'd get scared of his parents hurting him when he was younger, he'd hide in the back storage closet inside. to this day, he keeps a few old couch cushions, folding chairs, and snacks inside
-gavroche trusts his boys enough to show them but makes them SWEAR they'll never tell anyone else. promises are a big deal to them and they all pinky swear. the three of them meet up at the office when nitwit and nimrod get out of school. gavroche shows them the DS hand-me-down he also got from parnasse and brings snacks and bottles of soda and juice down so they can play little games. nitwit was really frightened of the store at first because it was pretty dark and spooky, but gavroche has made some changes. he's found flashlights to make it brighter and has blankets and a sonic plush to make him feel a little better
-there’s a great gatsby-style photo of a man's eyes with glasses across from the door of the Office. they all say "big brother is watching" as a joke but none of them have any idea what it means. nitwit just calls it the big brother now. he keeps watch for them and keeps the bad guys away
-sometimes nitwit and nimrod wont see gavroche for days. it isnt uncommon for communication to occasionally go dark for a little bit. when he isn't there, nimrod leaves little letters in the office for him to see when he comes back
-sometimes when he does come back, he's got bruises and scrapes and bruises. gavroche wont ever tell him where he gets them, but both nitwit and nimrod will bring bandaids and such from the orphanage to put on his forehead cut and scraped up knee
-gavroche looks out for them, and they look out for him

What are your thoughts on the Birthday special?
I had to rewrite this because tumblr deleted my answer like 3 times. I hate this shit app but here we go aaaagain.
I really adored it because it introduced us to Slappy my beloved💗🌸💗🌸💗🌷💗🌷💕💖🌸💗🌷🌷🌸💗💕💗🌸🌷💗🌷💕💗💕🌷🌸
My heart beats for youuuuu✨
Tumblr media
Jk jk but I do remember my initial reaction to him was basically "tf is that thing" oh how times have changed.
Spongebob's Big Birthday Blowout is easily the superior anniversary special. Truth or square kinda sucked ass (no offense to the people who enjoyed it tho) When Patchy said he hoped to see us again for the 20th anniversary special, my 9 year old self was like "you better because WHAT WAS THAT"
anyways they well delivered with this special.
I really enjoyed this episode, it was amazing because you don't see SB and friends interact wirh the human world. Yeah they've been to the human world surface for the SB movies but often times just for a mission. They never had a chance to really interact and explore with the human world which is what makes this special so enticing. The bikini bottom is a reclusive world with no contact with the outside so its their first time encountering human culture and contact. Like aliens in a way.
Its also really amusing that they're getting wrong information from the tour guide since it shows how fish folk makes sense of things they don't quite understand about the surface world. It's just guesses, even though those guesses are very wrong.
Also I've really grown to like Rube. He's AMAZING✨
It was also very cute how the tour bus trip is just Sponge and Patrick. We need more episodes of their friendship!!
Tumblr media
I also think it takes place from the fishes's POV and the human world isn't that weird. There probably isn't a gorilla mask office meeting😔
That's just how they make sense of the hustle and bustle of the human world. Which is a bit obvious enough. Either that or this is an alternate reality where the weirdness properties of random land leaked into the human world as well.
Anyways shout out to can-o beans. A true icon.
Tumblr media
Oh also this episode raises the morality question of if its ethical to own fish. Probably as a joke but it was unusual. I actually wanted to talk about it! In the episode Feral Friends, Neptune's moon turns the fish folk of the bikini bottom into less evolved versions of themselves which is pretty much the realistic versions of fish in the wild. In SB's Big Birthday Blowout, they end up at a place that sells pet fish, those fish also look really realistic. Which was basically like encountering a horror show for the fish in the tour bus. They recognize the fish in the tanks as their own people. Despite looking different. Patrick even has a crush on one of them. How does that work??? I have a lot of questions about that scene. I'll dig into it another time.
The Trusty Slab is the best part of the episode. They are exactly the SB characters. Tom Kenny really embodies Spongebob (which is obvious since he's been playing this character since before I was born) This is the most acceptable Humanbob out there. Nothing can top this. The energy is unmatched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same goes for all the characters. It's kinda funny how the voice actors all kinda look like their characters. Rodger Bumpass looks like Squidward. it's too funny to unsee.
Also Charlton (human Plankton) is adorable and the icing on the cake! Trying to rob the Trusty Slab but failing. This wouldn't be complete without Plankton. Though I wish Karen could have been there too :(
Though how would human Karen work? Why am I imagining one of those AI gf app thingies. That's a terrifying thought.
B plot for this episode is where a lot of the flaws come in. It falls pretty flat because it's just Sandy dealing with people fighting and causing a mess for the party which gets old fast. I liked seeing everyone's different ideas for the party and certainly they'd disagree but often times it feels like it's only Sandy holding this party together and dragging everyone around since they're so nonfunctional. Sandy deserved better.
Tumblr media
I did enjoy the fact that they brought back old characters whether nonverbal or whatever. The guy from rock bottom, the whale from ripped pamts. Even princess Mindy! I wish they brought back Stanley though. There was a lot of guest stars in this episode too! Though unlike Truth or Square, they don't take much of a huge focus of the story. If you notice them then its just a fun thing to see. If you don't then you didn't really miss anything.
Spongebob's parents also wondered about Spange's huge array of friends. They barely know their own son lol
Tumblr media
Regardless of the B plot, the episode was still really enjoyable. When spongebob came back from the trip and the end of the episode where they sing happy birthday to him was so so adorable!! They even redid the theme song just for his birthday! I love it!
Oh also! It was so satisfying to see Patchy meet spongebob. I've waited my whole life for this. But it does raise a question. Patchy is a spongebob (the tv show) super fan. Patchy actually got to visit spongebob (the character) so in universe there's both a show and the real character existing at the same time? I feel like this would fit into skin theory 🤔
Tumblr media
This episode was such a joy to watch. They didn't reveal spongebob's age but we know it since his birthday was revealed on his drivers license. He's getting old. this episode actually aired the day before SB's actual birthday. Mainly to avoid it conflating with Bastille Day for international releases. But that also means this episode aired on Tom Kenny's birthday. Think of it as a birthday present to the irl spange. I think that's just a neat fact to share.
Tumblr media
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the special too!

📕BTS Fic Reads - 2020 August
Okay so I’m such a hoe for fics that I probably have about a hundred on queue but I can’t help appreciate all the works that these awesome writers put here on Tumblr and AO3.
Here’s my attempt to organize my readings - though if my mood fluctuates, I’d just end up going through my reblogged fics for reading or sorting through my watchlist of ongoing/incomplete fics/series
✅ -  done reading   | S (smut) F (fluff) A (angst)
🥕[Ongoing Series - to check weekly]🥕
Dangerous Pairing @nightowls388 - KNJ |  supernatural  au, fantasy au, forbidden romance
[2/?] “Whether you’re a vampire or werewolf, love is still love. Betrayal is still betrayal.”
Queen Cobra @fantasybangtan - KTH | mafia au, undercover au, arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, thriller, s, f,a
[8/?]  when your boss offers the chance to take down the nation’s most lucrative gang from the inside out, you know you’ll do it no matter what the cost… even if that means entering an arranged marriage with the kingpin himself.
Arranged by obiwrites (AO3) - JHS | arranged marriage, unrequited love, angst, pining, jhs in love with someone else
[19/?] If you thought entering an arranged marriage with the person you love would be a dream, you were in for a rude awakening. Jung Hoseok was far from the doting husband you’d dreamed of and most of it could be chalked up to the fact that he was in love with his best friend. And you are without a shadow of a doubt, not her.
Image, Bad Boy @kittentaegu - JJK | badboy, fwb, angst, smut, more angstttt (I binge-read on this for the angst), adorable JJK when he’s not an fboi
[14/?] I chose to read this on AO3. Incomplete, but Ch 14 had such a satisfying ending -  When by chance you walk in on the school’s infamous bad boy, not once, but two different times in one day; your life quickly spirals out of control.
I’ll Sue You, Min Yoongi by hosexi (AO3) - MYG |  neighbors, enemies to lovers, angst, smut, lawyer!reader
[9/10] Yoongi is the neighbor from hell
Whiskey Neat and Whisking Trips by lacielre (AO3) - KTH | comedy, fake dating au, baker!reader, veterinarian!taehyung, funny 😂🤣, ex!Jin
[2/4]  This is a story about the night you poured your heart out to your ex outside his apartment building as a stranger yelled at you to “shut the fuck up,” and that stranger, who was just as wounded as you, was Taehyung, and he needed your help.
His Side, Her Side @scriptaed - JJK | he said, she said, f, a
[11/?] a collective snapshots in time shared between two, whose fates were undeniably intertwined and futures would never come to be  - one last chapter before series ends 😥
Black Swan @softlyjiminie - PJM | professional dancer, enemies to lovers, fake dating, figure skating, s, f, a
[2/?] a life of skating was all you’d ever known, your heart craving the feeling of ice beneath your feet and the light brush of cool air against your skin under thousands of sparkling lights… what a shame, if only you’d known that one night, one accident could rip you from the life you’d grown to love, leaving your career in the unsteady hands of the prince of ballet, park jimin.
The Key to my Drawer @jjungkookislife - KTH | bestfriends to lovers, s, a
[10/?]  A key, a drawer, and a secret Taehyung planned to take to the grave
The Nanny @jjungkookislife - KSJ| lawyer!seokjin, nanny!reader, single dad au
[2/?] Jin hires a nanny for his son, but when he hires you, he gets that and so much more
Acatalepsy @1kook - JJK |   survival au, apocalypse au, s, f
[2/?] Jungkook didn’t understand, and the longer he ponders it, he realizes maybe he never will. Some things are just better left unknown, he supposes. But that didn’t mean one had to face them alone.
Aphrodite in War @jungblue - JJK | angst, exes au, fake dating au, roommates, sorority/frat wars, college au *this is really good 😍😍*
[2/?] Everyone knew about the war that had been brewing on the edge of campus for the past two years. Sorority versus Fraternity; a showdown for the ages. However, when the escalating antics between them yields the consequence of possible suspensions for both chapters, the presidents of each house must come together to try and figure out how to end this battle… Which is kind of hard, considering they were the ones responsible for it in the first place.
Palate Cleanser @btsmakesmehappy - KTH | agent au, fwb, strangers to lovers, s, f, a
[5/?] Part of The Company series -  Taehyung needs something to take his mind off his broken heart. His best friend, Jimin, suggests that he should meet another woman and the first woman he met was you. Would you help him even though you have your own problem, that you hate men?
Bad Guy @taehoneys - JJK | college au, fratboy au, badboy, good girl(?),
[3/?] chose to read this on AO3 A certain video circulates the school after your big mistake and you never do mistakes, but you did this time…a big one: J e o n J u n g k o o k
Good Girl Series:  Good Girl || Sweet Girl || Smart Girl || Brave Girl  @bonny-kookoo - JJK |  good girl au, bad boy au, roommates, established relationship, s, f, a

When a new girl answers to his ad online searching for a roommate, he didn’t quite expect such an innocent being to turn up at his doorstep And what he definitely didn’t expect was his growing interest in her and the feeling of having her under him, all submissive and ready to be ruined.
Agent of Love @ppersonna - JJK |  social media au, agent au, s, f, a
[1/?] as the FBI agent assigned to your phone, Jungkook keeps a diligent watch. he takes a special interest when you try your hand in online dating AND online sexting. desperate to keep you from bombing yet another potential date, Jungkook breaks his vow of silence to assist you in your plight to get laid.
Irregular Heartbeat @ppersonnakookies - MYG | social media au, surgeon!yoongi, intern!reader,
[5/?] hot girl meets hot guy at a bar, lets him buy her a drink, then hooks up with him in the bathroom without even asking for his name. your typical friday night cliché. except for the fact that you’re a virgin, and the guy you drunkenly lose your v-card to is your superior at your new job.
Somewhere Only We Know @userseok - JJK | hybrid au, pining, angst, fantasy, smut
Prequel SOWK 1 SOWK 2 [being revised by author] Epilogue [to be posted]

Elysee @ironicarmy - KSJ |  angst, drama, CEO!Seokjin, personal assistant
[1/?] Being the CEO of Korea’s largest fashion house is no easy feat. But to be the person behind the man, that being his assistant, is an even harder spot to maintain. In a company filled with affairs, bribery, deceit, lies and blackmail, you must struggle to survive and, eventually, climb your way to the top of the food chain. Seokjin, your boss, trusts you more than anyone, but when exactly does the line between friendly camaraderie blur with carnal desire?

So, as I said in a previous post, I spent the whole night yesterday making picrews, and I thought: “Why not make picrews of the fictional family that I love more than everything in this world?”
Anyway, here they are! This is a close representation of how I picture the Hyde family whenever I think about the TSG universe (I am going to come up with a different name for this universe one day I promise). I am also going to give you guys some glimpses about their quirks and their personalities, so, click on the thingy if you’re interested on reading that.
Unfortunaly, it was impossible to make Jackie and Gracie’s eyes the way I picture them (mismatched, lol. I know this is a controversial topic but every single time I see the show I notice how Jackie’s eyes are different colors and I add that to every single one of my fics. It’s one of her little flaws that only makes her more perfect). So just pretend that one of their eyes is blue-ish, and the other one is green-ish.
Oh, and as I post more and more picrews, you might notice that out of all the adults characters from the TSG universe, Jackie’s the only one who doesn’t have any wrinkles. Years of a very strict skincare routine payed off really well for her.
Hyde grew his beard back, mostly because I always picture him with a beard when he’s older. Oh, and sorry for the lack of sunglasses, he stopped wearing them everyday when Dylan was a baby (he kept taking them off his face and throwing them at the ground lol).
On the left, we see Layla, the eldest and the wisest from all the three kids. The age gap between her and her siblings is big, so they always run to her when they need advice about something.
Layla’s a lot like Jackie, she cares about her looks, she’s a social butterfly, and she’s probably the most popular girl in school. She’s not shallow though, nor does she have the superiority complex Jackie had in the first few seasons of the show, Hyde and Jackie made sure to raise her well.
Layla’s also a bookworm, and a big romantic at heart. One of her dreams is to publish an epic romance novel, and writing is probably one of her favorite things in the entire world. She has this little red notebook filled with heart stickers in the cover where she often writes poems -- and Jackie is the only person allowed to read said poems.
Her hair is naturally wavy (as showed in the picture), but she starts to straighten it when she’s older. She grew up in the 90s after all.
Then there’s Dylan, or as I like to call him, the Hyde’s little evil spawn.
Don’t get me wrong here, Dylan is literally so sweet, and he cares about his family more than anything in the world. He’s a sucker for his mom’s hugs and he wants to be like Hyde in the future, but he also has a lot of pent up energy, which tends to put him into some pretty funny situations.
Dylan has a partner in crime, his name’s Jordan and he’s Fez and Laurie’s son (I’ll post a picrew of him later too). I’ve based Dylan and Jordan’s friendship on the Weasley twins from Harry Potter, they are natural pranksters and they drive Laurie and Jackie insane. Red helps the duo out with their pranks sometimes, claiming it’s “payback” for all the years he had to tolerate his son and his dumbasses friends mooching off him and making his life “miserable”. Dylan and Red also have a cute bond, we’ll see more of that in the sequel.
As he grows older, Dylan gets tall. Like, Jackie’s a midget next to him, guys (that doesn’t stop her from coddling him though). No one knows where he’s got that height from, and he uses that to his advantage (by placing Jackie and Layla’s Pop music CDs on high places that they couldn’t possibly reach just to mess with them. Oh, and he also joins the basketball team lol).
He’s very protective of his family, like, really protective, and he doesn’t take shit from anyone. He has a special soft spot for Hannah (Eric and Donna’s younger daughter). Hannah is a year older than him, and she’s hearing impaired. One day a guy from school stole her hearing aid to mess with her, and he got the beating of a lifetime. Dylan was suspended and Jackie went to the school to yell at the principal and defend her son, because she’s that kind of mom.
Don’t get any wrong ideas about Dylan and Hannah though, they were raised like siblings.
Dylan’s very into cars (another thing in common he has with Red), and when Hyde finally gives him the Camino, he babies the fuck out of it.
And last but not least... Gracie. Or Erica, as Eric likes to remind everyone about it.
Gracie will only be three years old in the sequel, so we won’t see a lot of her personality, but as I said many times, I do plan on writing one-shots about the kids when they’re older once the sequel is done, so...
Hyde has a special nickname for her, he calls her his little “Goldilocks” because her hair is curly and it’s almost a golden color. She’s a very smart kid and she’s always drawing.
Seriously, Jackie and Hyde’s fridge is filled with Gracie’s drawings, it’s the sweetest thing. They never threw a single drawing of her away, they always keep them, and they incentivize her as much as possible when she’s growing up.
She grows up to be an artsy person, and she’s very talented. She’s not a social butterfly like Layla, nor is she a “badass” like Dylan, she’s an introvert, she likes to stay home with her parents (she loves her parents so much) and have movie marathons with them on the weekends instead of going out to party.
She hangs out a lot with Katie (Fez and Laurie’s youngest daughter), who’s her best friend and her complete opposite, they have a bunch of sleepovers where they watch a ton of horror movies together and stuff their faces with ice cream. Their friendship is really something else, and she’s the first person Gracie comes out to (yup, Gracie’s a lesbian).
Gracie and Eric are very close, and she gets him very into Harry Potter. It’s funny, because Eric insists that he’s a Gryffindor, and Gracie tells him he’s totally a Hufflepuff, which makes him mad and they end up bickering because of it. But overall, they love each other a lot, and Eric’s a father figure to her.
Her relationship with Jackie and Hyde is beautiful. She’s not afraid of asking them for cuddles when she’s feeling down, and they are literally her biggest supporters. When Layla moves out for good (insert very sad Jackie and Hyde noises), they turn her room into a mini art studio for Gracie, and she spends most of her days there, listening to music and painting whatever comes to her mind.
Wow, I got really excited and I ended up talking waaay too much, but well... I love this family so much, I couldn’t help myself.
If you have any questions about the TSG sequel or about the characters in general, please feel free to send them to me!
Posting picrews of the Forman family next!

How many kids NCT would have
Tumblr media
One
Yuta - He would love to have a child, he absolutely adores children.  One would be just enough for him.  He would want to spoil his kid and buy them all the toys and games they want.  He’d give them lots of cuddle time, cheek kisses, hugs, basically all the love and affection 24/7 lol. He would have a hard time scolding his kid so he would just leave that up to his partner.
Doyoung - He adores kids and would love to have a daughter.  He can probably handle up to 2 kids but would prefer 1 so things won’t get too chaotic.  He would shower his little girl with a lot of love and affection.  He would enjoy taking his kid to the movies, to museums, nature walks, bird sanctuaries, bunny cafes, ferris wheel rides and amusement parks. He would be a super attentive, clingy dad.
Jungwoo - I think he would be very happy with just one child.  He would be able to put all his attention onto them and have fun together.  He would be a nervous dad at first, unsure of what to do but over time he will gain confidence.
Mark: I think Mark would want one child so he can spoil them and give them his full undivided attention. More than one would be chaotic for him unless he had a lot of help from his partner. He would cherish his child with the utmust care and affection.
Two
Taeyong - Bubu would love to have a boy and a girl.  He would feel that it would be a good balance to his family and any more than that would probably tire him out.  He’d do lots of artistic things with his children such as decorating their shoes or the walls of their room, maybe teach them how to make their own music, cook/bake, care for animals, etc.  He would want to watch his kids succeed to their full potential and instill in them the importance of expressing themselves.
Jaehyun - He would also want 2 kids, at least one daughter.  He loves children and would want to start his own family as soon as possible. I think more than 2 would overwhelm him though because he would be afraid of them not getting equal attention.  He would take his kids out to the playground and park daily, visit petting zoos, get yummy snacks and ice cream, play arcade games, play sports games, literally anything he can think of he’d like to just enjoy spending time with them. He would be a very loving dad.
Haechan: Ideally, Haechan would like to have a whole soccer team but if his partner left him with the kids for a day he would go insane. Two children is what he would settle for and can actually manage. He would play games with them, do impressions and make jokes to make them laugh. He would basically be a playful silly dad who would be like a friend to them.
Three
Johnny - Johnny would love to have a big family. He is a mature, responsible guy so he can definitely handle up to 3 kids.  He would love to play with his kids and take them on family trips and vacations all over the world. I think he would be a very protective, caring and understanding father.
Go crazy go stupid
Taeil - He seems like he can handle a lot of kids and would give an equal amount of love to them all.  He is an extremely calm laid back person so he won’t really be strict and he also loves to have fun so his kids will see him as the cool dad haha. If you look at his relationship with Haechan and Dreamies you will see that even though he’s the oldest they consider him to be their age or even younger because he never acts superior to them, also he never turns away a member who wants affection from him ^^ He’d be very happy with two sets of twins, any gender. 😊

Small Isles Interview: Filmless Music

BY JORDAN MAINZER
It’s rare that you find a record with a genesis as specific as The Valley, The Mountains, The Sea, the debut album from Small Isles. The new project of guitarist Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy, former Modest Mouse) and songwriter/composer Jacob Snider has its basis in film scoring. The catch? The films don’t exist. The Valley, The Mountains, The Sea is presented as an imaginary score to an imagined sequel to Ang Lee’s 1997 familial drama The Ice Storm, itself based on Rick Moody’s 1994 novel. And the band’s upcoming, unfinished EP, with strings arranged by Snider and recorded by collaborator Sienna Peck, is, according to the band, a distillation of the concept of the band, one that consciously combines film scoring motifs with traditional songwriting. In a way, you could say that Small Isles is music about film scoring as much as scores itself.
Fairchild and Snider hold the belief that film scores should hold their own as a piece of music independent of visuals, and on The Valley, The Mountains, The Sea, they announce themselves convincingly. Opening track “The Concept”--essentially the prototype for the band--combines vaguely harmonic deep bass sounds with pristine, echoing string plucks, and wordless vocals, building up like an Explosions in the Sky tune. Other tracks, too, juxtapose the ambient with recognizable structures. “Fort Wayne” shimmers atop a drum machine, while the vocal samples of “Maybe We Will” cut in and out among the beats and arpeggios. Each track also has a pristine sense of place, as much of the album was written while Fairchild was on tour with Modest Mouse, tracks like “Fort Wayne” and the washy, atonal “Lake Superior” started in those locations.
I spoke with Fairchild (calling from his home in Ojai, California” and Snider (calling from near Philadelphia) last week, a few days prior to the release of the album via AKP Recordings. (The album comes out on vinyl next month). Read our conversation below, edited for length and clarity, about the band’s artistic process, The Ice Storm, adapting the songs live, and what Small Isles has in common with Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour.
Since I Left You: You’ve called this record an imaginary score to an imaginary film. Did you think of the sequencing of the record in a narrative arc?
Jim Fairchild: Kind of, but honestly, there’s a sequence that originally existed, and I don’t remember what it was, and it would have been more aligned with what I pictured from the movie, but it didn’t work as well as a comprehensive piece of music. The last song on here, “The Plot to Take Clover”, that was earlier before. “Life at One”, the first single, really kicked off me and Jacob’s partnership. It was designed that way; it’s not the way the record plays out. I wrote all of the principle themes, the underpinnings of all the compositions, as an imagined score to some sort of a sequel to The Ice Storm. I don’t know exactly how it would play out with Rick Moody. The first one was really successful. I have this idea for a similar type of movie that takes place in contemporary California and all these cues I can use as a mood board. Like, let’s sit down and figure out what this palate is. Let’s write a movie around it. That’s what I was thinking.
SILY: You wrote a lot of this while on tour. Had you conceived of the idea before then and wrote while on tour because of your downtime, or was the downtime the launching point for the idea?
JF: I was totally inspired by the idea. I started some of the themes that popped up, but once the actual Ice Storm Ang Lee idea came to mind, it was really generative. It’s how a lot of this stuff works with me. It kind of floats around for a while, reaching out this way or that. Once the real kernel appears, it’s like, “That’s it!” It all happens pretty quickly. That was definitely the case with this. It was the real fine-tuning that’s the most time consuming. That’s what Jacob and I have experienced. The EP that we’re releasing later this year, basically how it’s worked so far is I send him a sequence of chords and basic rhythm, which happens pretty quickly. Then--and we’ve only done it on Zoom with the new EP, though it was the same with “Life at One”--there was this theme. Jacob came in, we were gonna write some other stuff. He came in with a mic and sang some stacked harmonies. Then it’s carving out all the other elements around that to make it.
These are unconventional compositions. They’re meant to accompany visual ideas. With that in mind, cues and scoring music doesn’t always work in recorded music, traditionally speaking. There’s all these lengths, sometimes time signatures shift, a melody might exist in an unconventional way to fit what’s happening visually. I really wanted to embrace that. With “Life at One”, Jacob did all this stuff, and there’s this really interesting sound I don’t know how to describe. He asked, “What are those over there?” [My partner Natasha Wheat] had made these ceramic bells for me, and that’s the most fun part about working with Jacob. A lot of the people who are trained as Jacob is--and I say this with great admiration for his abilities--are stuck in certain modalities. This is a perfect example. He looked at the bells and said, “Let’s do that.” He grabbed a drumstick and played the edge of these bells and processed them. That was a big feature in the composition of “Life at One”. This all happens very thematically and reflexively, but to then carve it up and get it to have purpose, meaning, ebb, and flow and make it work visually--that’s where the dirty shit happens. [laughs] I also look forward to when Jacob and I can be in person more. We’ve made a lot happen over the past 7 months, but it’s hard when you’re not in the same room. Plus, I’d like to show off. If he’s sitting right next to me, play some fast guitar...[laughs]
SILY: The title of the record refers to various aspects of topography, and there are song titles that refer to specific places, like “Fort Wayne” and “Lake Superior”. Do these aspects exist within the narrative of the film?
JF: “Lake Superior” and “Fort Wayne” were just started in those places, literally. I picture the Ang Lee movie--the new Ang Lee movie that is inevitably gonna take form because he’s gonna hear me and Jacob’s music and think, “You’re right, we gotta do this,”--in this zone a little bit east of Berkeley. It’s the West Coast equivalent of the Connecticut zone where The Ice Storm exists. It’s this affluent, green place. But the reason I chose to keep the others as titles is like, Fort Wayne, that’s pretty grand and has Batman implications. And Lake Superior, what a fucking great name for a lake, you know? I like the power of those, and if I were sitting down and writing a movie, those titles could be at least generative of a conversation.
SILY: What about the other song titles? What inspired them?
JF: “The Concept” is literally the concept for our band. The concept has expanded since then, but out of the ordinary--no sounds are out of the ordinary in modern production--but in the film scoring landscape, out of the ordinary, ambient, or textural sounds. But then big, beautiful melodies. Jacob’s voice. All that stuff. Synthesizing our two strengths. Jacob’s also a songwriter and makes amazing songs, but my background’s in bands, and so I treat our relationship as if it’s a band. Taking our two strengths. Jacob’s more conventionally trained, schooled, and knowledgeable than I am. He has a richer depth of knowledge in theory and orchestration. I can arrange that way, but he knows what’s going on. Mine is more reflexive--I don’t want to say auto-didactic because that’s kind of an arrogant term--but learning through mistakes. I think Jacob’s made fewer mistakes than I have.
SILY: What were all the instruments used on the record?
JF: There’s a lot of found stuff. 12-string guitar. I was writing it using this Rosewood Fender Stratocaster that Fender made for me. The 12-string is prominent on “Life At One”. There’s a piano Jacob played. There’s a lot of me coming up with drum beats. A lot of the initial stuff was in the box. I’d roll in my portable studio backstage, I’d have a guitar, Universal Audio space, whatever drums and synths I had.
SILY: What is your background in film scoring?
JF: I don’t have a specific background. From a very early age, I’ve been into film scores. I’d buy them starting when I was 15 or 16. CDs. Pretty obvious releases, but things like Danny Elfman’s Batman score, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Sort of getting into Jerry Goldsmith. Elfman, Morricone. I like some of the Bernard Hermann stuff. I started studying it from the way I study everything: figuring out chord sequences, the way the melodies work, to the degree I was able. In the early 2010s, I was making a lot of music that was getting licensed for TV. Once Modest Mouse really started touring [2015 album] Strangers to Ourselves, I let a lot of those pursuits wither a little bit. But I’d always longed for a collaboration. A lot of that stuff was done in a solitary way, so I felt very fortunate when Jacob and I met. He was into that idiom but has a range of skills I don’t have. We also really work well together. All the reflexive stuff that happens, the melodies, it’s easy for us to go back and forth and see what we’re into and where to keep going. Neither of us get upset when the other person isn’t feeling whatever the direction is.
As I get older, I realize the value of stimulating multiple senses. I look forward to Jacob and I doing more of this stuff in collaboration with people. The Riley Thompson video for “Life At One” was him responding to a finished track, but in an ideal world, filmmakers would come to us and, in the way Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross work with David Fincher, where he says, “This is the concept for the new film,” and Jacob and I come back and say, “This is the sonic and melodic landscape we’re thinking of, and here are some character cues. Let’s take it from there.” I love being in conversation with people collaboratively and am attracted to the idea of it across media.
SILY: Do you think the idea that the music might not be responding to a finished film would make the score stand on its own more as a piece of music?
JF: The scores that I like totally stand on their own as music. When Morricone passed away, I read that John Zorn had a quote when they were hanging out in the late 80′s or early 90′s, Zorn said, “Don’t do it unless you’re thinking about what the soundtrack record is gonna be like.” The music needs to be cool enough to just be music.

SILY: Tell me about the album art.
JF: Natasha and I sold our place in Los Angeles last year and moved to Ojai. We thought it was a temporary transition, and now it’s somewhat permanent, because we bought a place here. We’ve been in this guesthouse next door since November. I like taking pictures at night with whatever ambient light [there is], so I took that picture from our place. I wanted there to be contrast with this technicolor paint and silver border on the upper and lower parts of the image. Homes are very interesting to me, and there’s a lot of that in The Ice Storm. There’s that shelf people look at from the outside and think, “It could be dilapidated, it could be beautiful.” People think of it as a thing. But there’s this whole other world that only exists inside of there. It’s always fascinating to me when walking by the place. Stories in the shell. I like the idea of a structure having implications. I don’t have an agenda for what those implications might be, but I like the idea that there could be implications there.
SILY: Jacob, when Jim came to you with this idea, how aware were you of The Ice Storm?
Jacob Snider: I had seen it. I don’t know if in our first meeting, it came up that specifically and clearly that this is where the music was going. In fact, it started more as a casual meeting of creative types. When I came over to Jim’s studio, he just showed me the latest thing he was working on without any huge idea behind it expressed to me in that moment. Jim might have been thinking it in that moment, but that day was more, “Alright, I’m working on something, what do you hear and is there something you think you could contribute to it?” It was really organic. Like Jim mentioned before, the best thing you can do when making something is show it to somebody else, because they’re gonna hear it in a different way or they might suggest something if you’re open to it. People can make amazing solitary music, but it will always be just their thing. You bring in someone else, there’s a different energy, a different perspective.
As it stands, I do love that film. It’s really haunting. Jim and I talked before that it’s not a movie you can watch every week. It’s heavy, and the themes are deep: family, loss, grief, betrayal. It’s a great one. I think it’s a movie that’s cinematic but also has a lot of depth. I think that’s what we’re going for with Small Isles. It has shades of film music but also shades of rock and roll and romantic string writing from the orchestral traditions. I think we’re trying to combine a few things at once, and we’re really curious how it starts to strike people and how some filmmakers respond to it.
SILY: Are you both generally Ang Lee fans?
JF: I haven’t devoured all of his work. There’s plenty I like. But I’m so in love with [The Ice Storm]. I was in love with the book before the movie came out. He treated it so beautifully. As high in the sky as it is for two nascent film composers to say, “I want to work with Ang Lee,” it’s very important to know where you want to go. It may take a long time to get there, but [it’s important] to have a place where you’re headed. That was definitely the case in the early Grandaddy days, and having watched [Modest Mouse lead singer] Isaac [Brock] for as long as I did, I think it was the case there, too. It may not be as specific knowing that I’m traveling in this direction, but that direction can totally change. There can be diversions that knock you off your course positively or negatively, but thinking about how beautifully he treated that material, that’s where I want to go.
SILY: How are you adapting Small Isles to a live performance?
JF: We’re gonna play at least some of this, maybe all of this live. I’m really looking forward to it. Jacob’s only on half this record, and the 5-song EP we’re releasing later this year, he’s on all of. That’s a straight-up 50/50 collaboration. I’m looking forward to the stuff Jacob didn’t contribute to on the record, hearing what he does with strings. We’re still figuring out how we’re gonna approach it. Jacob will be on keys and vocals, and I might sing a little bit. I’ll be on guitar. Our friend Sienna who Jacob went to school with, who’s doing the strings, we’re talking about having her lead a double string quartet. I would like to have a drummer doing some electronic drums and maybe a kit as well. I definitely don’t imagine we’ll totally nail it on night 1. There’s a lot of stuff we have to work out. There aren’t many antecedents in this zone, but something like Explosions in the Sky mixed with Johann Johannsson. I saw [the latter] in 2010 in San Francisco; there was a little bit of strings, various electronics, and he was on piano. That was a very striking performance. So the explosiveness of a big arena rock show with lots of subtleties and nuance that can come from strings and orchestral.
SILY: What else is next for Small Isles?
JF: We wanna finish this EP. I also really love the way a lot of rap and hip-hop people have gotten it right over the years. Using current listening habits and technology to get out as much music as possible. I definitely have the seeds for at least another EP behind this. Once we get this EP done--there’s just a little bit of tinkering to be done over the next month before going into the mixing stage--I want to make as much music as possible and release it. With the spirits of the world willing, I want to get off the ground live and collaborate with filmmakers, dancers, artists, people in the visual medium. I just love making music with Jacob and this type of music. I’d like to have a few releases a year. EP length [or] album length. I have a number of concepts written down. The seeds that Jacob and I have been playing with to make the EP. I was thinking about The Last Black Man in San Francisco when making this EP, and I’d love to collaborate with those filmmakers. Even just being in person, to tell Jacob, “What do you think of this sequence?” and have him respond without dealing with latency issues and dodgy DSL.
SILY: Anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading lately that’s caught your attention?
Jacob Snider: I’ve been listening to a lot of pop. I’ve been listening to the Olivia Rodrigo record [Sour]. I think there’s great writing on there, great production. Watching, I’ll just piggyback on The Last Black Man in San Francisco. It took me a while to finally see it, but I had a filmmaker friend tell me I had to, and I loved it. Also the other film Emile Mosseri did the score for, Kajillionaire, the Miranda July film. Reading-wise, I’m about to jump back into Louise Erdrich’s The Round House.
JF: I’ve been digging the Olivia record, too.
JS: There’s some cool strings on there too from the guy who does a lot of the strings for Portugal. The Man, [Paul Cartwright]. They created a string orchestra sound with just one guy layering violin and viola, which is really cool, and that’s what we’re doing with our collaborator Sienna Peck. There’s totally room for that now, the way the world has been so remote. We can’t put 16 players in a room right now due to public health restrictions, so let’s get one person. It’s really hard to do--you can be a great violinist and not be able to layer yourself in a way that makes it sound like a string orchestra. You have to change your position in the room, the way you’re playing slightly, pretend to be three different people sharing a stand. That’s what you’ll hear on the next record.
JF: I just got into How to Change Your Mind, the Michael Pollan book about psychedelics, which I really loved. I just started a book called The Magic Years, which is about child development. I have a three-and-a-half-year-old son, and I’m very fascinated by what’s going on in his brain and what makes him make the decisions he makes. Just how to be a better dad. I am always a religious reader of The New Yorker, every week it comes out. Natasha and I watched The Kids, a documentary [about the making of Larry Clark’s Kids]. When that movie came out, Grandaddy were skateboarders, so it was important to us. But even as a young kid, I felt that it was really exploitative, and the documentary verifies it. It’s heartbreaking. Larry Clark is a really derelict dude. Truly lecherous. But [The Kids] is a beautiful movie. We’ve been watching Los Espookys. I’m really excited about Vince Staples’ upcoming record. My friend Nik Freitas put out a new song. My musical diet’s gotten really regressive in a way because my son is very into the Super Furry Animals record Radiator. It’s all he wants to listen to in the car.
