the crazy thing about everlark is that peeta's this very social and outgoing golden retriever personality who wears his heart on his sleeve and makes his feelings very clear. however katniss is just not that person - the traumatic circumstances she grew up in and the general confusion she's always experiencing about emotions make her this very reserved person. and she had to be able to preserve that control over herself, so that she wouldn't end up in that same useless, incapacitated state her mother did when mr everdeen died.

so katniss is perceived as unemotional and not nearly as in love with peeta to the extent that he is for her. but a lot of that misconception comes from the fact that they were forced to play a part to survive (so her main concern was staying alive, and not romance), and she is by nature reserved and private because emotions make her vulnerable. (her reaction to nudity and the injuries of her mother's patients, despite the fact that she literally murders animals every day for food, demonstrates this fear and aversion to vulnerability).

but like when she began building a steady friendship with peeta, when they formed this bond of intimacy and trust and connection from their shared trauma, when they began to receive comfort in each other's presence that not even gale (her best friend of several years) could give her... katniss was never indifferent like snow claimed, but this was when katniss began to truly fall for peeta, and she fell hard. she still can't express this the way he can, because she doesn't have his way with words, but in her actions and private thoughts is when the intensity of this love really becomes apparent. the way she admired his strength of character (comparing him to the other tributes in the quarter quell by saying that nobody there won their previous games by being compassionate and humanitarian), the way she considered him a close friend, the way she became fascinated and obsessed with the pearl he gave her as a gift, the way she looked to him to feel safe... katniss was falling deeply in love. she isn't an effective communicator - words are peeta's weapon, not hers. but despite being perceived as indifferent and uninterested by snow (and finnick to an extent in cf, who assumed she had no feelings for him), katniss is literally so far gone for him.

SURPRISE: YUUSHA GAINS MAGIC (By absorbing the Magic around her & dealing with Overblots)! Even better, she doesn't need a Mage Stone to control it! What would Yuusha's Unique Magic be & how does she use it? How would Jamil react?

anyways i also had an agonizing realization that yuusha is somewhat twisted elsa/anna because she has:

braid in front ✅

light-colored hair streak ✅

love interest that used her for his schemes ✅

desire to connect with people bc of years of loneliness (and emotional instability) ✅

unresolved childhood trauma in general ✅

(and probably more idk, these are the ones that stand out to me at the moment)

i haven't thought about frozen for YEARS and somehow it's still haunting me.

i have a lot of mixed feelings about this realization in general but the reason i brought this up is because i ended up basing yuusha's unique magic on frozen (not the ice powers part, but more the emotions aspect since elsa's powers work based on her emotions) while also still having aspects of yuu's own personality on it.

(also I'm sorry in advance i keep on dropping random lore about yuu and jamil's dynamic that only makes sense to myself hndsfhdsj)

"Show Yourself" forces the target to say what's actually on their mind as long as she touches them. Since she's not particularly powerful and skilled with her own unique magic in the beginning, it's limited to skin-to-skin contact, and it only lasts for as long as she's touching her target.

If Yuu trained it more, it doesn't have to be skin-to-skin, just as long as she makes some kind of physical contact with her target; and it could last for as long as she wants even if she is no longer making physical contact. (But the longer she keeps it up, the more blot accumulates.) Yuusha would mostly just use her unique magic to mess with people. It'll only be rare that she chooses to use it for something serious.

To add more onto how Jamil would react to these magic shenanigans: They've both agreed on not using their unique magic on each other. To do so would be a breach of trust. (Of course there would be special exceptions but generally that's their agreement.) And since Jamil is still a scheming prick (affectionate), her "Show Yourself" unique magic would be useful. Plus, Yuu would not be against using her unique magic 99% of the time since she is also aware of the usefulness of her ability. Jamil would insist on helping Yuu out on how to use her magic because there was no way she'd get the hang of it immediately. And he knows she would refuse to ask any other (capable) magician for help.

An alternate idea that I scrapped was "Let It Go" where it's essentially Yuu telling her target to let go of their (usually negative) emotions. But those feelings can't just disappear so Yuu basically absorbs them so now it's her burden to carry instead. I scrapped it because I can't settle on how it works. (But it still had angst potential so I couldn't help but draw a bit about it anyway.)

this is a brief tangent from the original question because i also thought, "hey what if she overblotted, wouldn't that be fun"

i could see the overblot going in either two ways:

yuu accidentally hurts grim (or another friend) with her magic. she’s so distraught thinking that even with magic she can't protect those who are dear to her. and so during the overblot she will not actively try to hurt anyone but instead exhausting her magic reserves in an intentional attempt at self-destruction. (yes i also see the frozen parallels shhhh)

OR

something happens that was simply THE LAST STRAW. now she’s too pissed at everyone that she no longer cares about what happens to her or anyone else, going on a destructive rampage. which can also be considered an intentional attempt at self-destruction.

either way, basically, if she can’t go home she’s just going to take herself out and/or the school instead. the girl is not okay.

(there's actually nothing good she can home to, but she's convinced she'll be happy again if she returns. but she doesn't know that because she can't remember shit about her home. that's a separate lore dump post hgdsjfkld)

also the blot monster behind her would look something like marshmallow (elsa's snow monster from frozen) :)

(i also used to have a similar idea for yuusha. i planned to have her be immune to magic *because* she was absorbing it and she didn't realize. leading to an inevitable overblot) (but i scrapped it because yuusha became my victim for jamil x yuu stuff) (like if i can't have the excuse to have jamil use snake whisper on yuu then what is the point)

So Cassie said she's planning to make a book with short stories about one of the characters that appears in TLH. So who do we think it's going to be about?

My thoughts:

Jesse Blackthorn - listen 💅🏻him learning how to live again, his life with Lucie, more of TLH characters life after the final book, roaring twenties, him building relationship with Lucie's family and friends.

Anna Lightwood - like almost the same as Jesse but .... downworlders✨ their stories, Hypatia's story, her life with Ariadne/Kamala, maybe their possible adopted baby. Lots of stuff actually. Maybe them moving to New York, more about LGBTQIA community during those times.

Matthew Fairchild - "yes rina☺️he's turning into a vampire and that's about his life after TLH and before TWP cause he's alive and currently hiding☝🏻". If he'd really turn into a vampire and he's still alive rn, there's no way Tessa and Jem would accept such a lonely fate for him and not try to find him. Remember what they did to find Kit, even tho his mom and dad told to stop, and they didn't even know him back then. Even if he turns into a vampire in TLH - he's dead now. For some reason;-;

So ... It can be a short book about him trying to heal, to fight his alcoholism cause it can't be fixed in a week during Chain of Thorns. I refuse to accept the theory that Matthew tells everything to his parents, they forgive him and his alcoholism ✨ magically disappears ✨ after that. It's a long process which can start in the end of Chot.

So: a bit about him in a.... Shadowhunter rehab?🤨; him getting closer to his parents and Charles (after his redemption arc), them supporting each other, being open about their sexuality; him slowly building healthy romantic relationship; Cordelia and James supporting him; him trying to draw and write poetry, trying to heal with the help of family, love and art. Again sth about downworlders cause he really loves to be around them🌚him gaining his confidence again and returning to his "supportive mom💕" mode.

Ragnor Fell - just him hating every generation of Shadowhunters and maybe finally asking Catarina out?
