The White Sox are negotiating with developer Related Midwest about the possibility of building a new ballpark on the South Loop parcel known as “The 78.” Sources familiar with the talks, all speaking on the condition they not be named, told the Chicago Sun-Times the negotiations for a baseball-only stadium are “serious.” The Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, the government agency that owns and financed Guaranteed Rate Field, has not been involved in the discussions, according to the authority’s CEO Frank Bilecki. At some point, the stadium authority would need to get involved in determining the future of Guaranteed Rate Field and possibly in building a new ballpark if it is publicly funded. The potential site at Roosevelt Road and Clark Street is owned by Related Midwest. Company President Curt Bailey wouldn’t comment. Nor would Sox spokesperson Scott Reifert or Jason Lee, a senior adviser to Mayor Brandon Johnson. Johnson and Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a joint, written statement in response to questions: “We met to discuss the historic partnership between the team and Chicago and the team’s ideas for remaining competitive in Chicago in perpetuity.” They didn’t mention the possibility of moving the Sox from Guaranteed Rate Field to the South Loop tract, which the developer named for its potential to become Chicago’s 78th neighborhood.

One-of-a-kind site in prime location

At 62 acres stretching south to 16th Street, The 78 is one of Chicago’s largest undeveloped parcels — and the most strategically located. But it has eluded development for decades.

Once owned by convicted political power player Tony Rezko, it was one of several sites in the running for a Chicago casino now planned for River West.

Rezko’s partner in the South Loop land deal was Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi billionaire living in London who was once convicted of accepting illegal commissions in an oil deal in France. Auchi was fined and sentenced to probation.

As of 2019, Auchi still owned the site after taking on Related Midwest as a new partner. It’s unclear whether Auchi still owns a piece of the site.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker plans to use at least part of the property for a University of Illinois tech research center known as Discovery Partners Institute. That’s the only concrete project on the drawing board for The 78. Discovery Partners has been expected to use about 4 acres at the southern part of the site. Bill Jackson, executive director, said he has heard the White Sox could be interested and would make a great neighbor.

“A new Sox park could bring the infrastructure we need” for the institute, Jackson said. “I think it would be great.”

Jackson added that the institute has a firm commitment to staying at The 78. “Our game plan doesn’t work without being there,” he said.

A spokesperson for the institute said it expects to break ground on its project this year. She said bids for the construction are expected to go before the state’s capital development board in a few weeks.

Could Sox share new site?

But a Chicago developer familiar with the property, who requested anonymity, said the institute has been “trying to get out of that deal for a couple of years.”

The site isn’t big enough to accommodate both Discovery Partners and a baseball stadium with its parking lots, the developer said: “They’ll have to move elsewhere.”

Sources said mass transit access — the nearby Roosevelt station serves the CTA’s Red, Green and Orange lines — could reduce the need for stadium parking. With the Chicago River just west of the site, sources also noted the possibility of water taxi service for game-day crowds.

Ganis called The 78 the “best undeveloped site” in Chicago and said he’s not surprised the Sox might be considering it.

“If the White Sox are to stay in the city proper, that is an excellent location,” Ganis said. “It’s a clear site that has mass transit and highway access around it. It is one of the very few locations in the urban core of Chicago that could have a well-situated stadium on it.”

Railroad tracks bisecting the land make it “even more” attractive as a stadium site, Ganis said.

“When you have an active railroad line or railroad stations going through a location, there are only so many things you can do with that property,” he said. “Housing is challenging. Commercial development is challenging. A sports facility that is operated only at certain times, and, when it’s operating, noise is expected anyway, is well-located there.

Ganis likened the Sox quest for a new home to the stadium development in suburban Atlanta known as The Battery. Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves, is a stadium-anchored mixed-used development that includes hotels, restaurants, shopping and other entertainment and business uses within walking distance of the stadium.

“It’s been very successful. There are lots of teams in baseball that are looking at emulating what the Atlanta Braves have done,” Ganis said.

1988 deal stopped Sox move to Florida

Guaranteed Rate Field opened in 1991 across the street from the team’s old home, the now-demolished Comiskey Park. Financing for the new stadium came together in an eleventh-hour deal that prevented the Sox from moving to St. Petersburg, Florida.

Then-Gov. Jim Thompson stopped the clock to lobby lawmakers, who approved the deal after the session’s midnight deadline in 1988.

The initial lease was highly favorable to the Sox. For the first decade, the team paid no rent if annual attendance fell below 1.2 million. Under its current lease, the team pays $1.5 million in annual rent. The Sox control revenue from ticket sales, concessions, parking and merchandise operations.

The lease has been amended in recent years to allow the Sox to open a team store and a restaurant on state-owned land across the street from the ballpark.

At the same time the Sox are pondering a move, the Bears are continuing their search for a new Chicago home after spending $197.2 million to purchase the site of the Arlington International Racecourse, then running into a property tax roadblock from suburban school districts.

The 78 could be a possible site for a Bears stadium, but sources said the team isn’t interested. And if the team were to build in Chicago, sources said Bears President Kevin Warren is focused on a site such as Soldier Field’s south parking lot.

A White Sox move to the South Loop also could affect the Chicago Fire. Sources said the soccer team, which plays at Soldier Field, could move to Guaranteed Rate Field if the baseball team moves out.

“We have not engaged with the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority about playing at Guaranteed Rate Field,” Fire spokesman Jhamie Chin said, adding that the team has focused on starting construction of its performance center for training and team offices on the Near West Side.

The soccer team’s lease at Soldier Field has two more years to run, and the club has extensions that could cover another five years.

Reinsdorf has called the 2023 White Sox season, his 43rd in baseball, “absolutely the worst season I’ve ever been through.”

At the time, Reinsdorf was asked if the experience was so bad that he considered unloading the team.

“I’m going to couch this so nobody writes that I thought of selling,” he said with a chuckle.

A YMCA swimming coach in Illinois accused a sixteen-year-old girl of “hate speech” for voicing concerns over a male claiming to be a transgender woman walking nude in the girl’s locker room.

Last April, Abbigail Wheeler, a swimmer on the Springfield, Illinois, YMCA SPY swim team, was alarmed when a transgender woman was allowed to use the same locker room as the girls on her team.

The girl brought her concerns to head swim coach Alex Totura, but he told her there was nothing he could do to stop it. But that didn’t end the controversy as shortly afterward, several parents organized to bring their concerns to the YMCA’s Chief Executive Officer Angie Sowle, Fox News reported.

The parents requested that the facility change its policy and require trans people to use single-person bathrooms to change in.

Some of the girls on the team also allegedly began hanging signs in the women-only locker room reading “Women’s Rights,” “Biological Women Only,” and “Safe Sport.”

“‘SafeSport’ is a U.S. nonprofit authorized by Congress that is dedicated to ending physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in sports,” Fox News noted.

After the signs went up, though, Wheeler’s father said that coach Totura retaliated by saying the girl was engaging in “hate speech” and throwing her off the swim team. Totura allegedly told the girl she was “not allowed to participate with the swim team and was asked to leave the pool area,” her father says.

For its part, the YMCA claims the girl is lying and that she was never kicked off the team.

“The statement that the swimmer was removed from the Y and prevented from participating on the swim team is false. She left the swim team and the YMCA on her own,” said a spokesperson with the YMCA.

Still, the organization has rules preventing complaints about transgenders using whatever bathroom suits their fancy and has lashed out at such complaints before.

In Aug. 2022, an 8-year-old woman was banned from a YMCA in Port Townsend, Washington, for raising concerns about naked men walking around in the women’s locker room.

In Jan., a YMCA in San Diego went on the attack against a teen girl who was upset by a naked man seen inside the girl’s locker room. The girl was reportedly called a “bigot” by YMCA staff.

Also, in Ohio, a judge ruled that a man claiming to be a woman was not guilty of flashing girls in the women’s locker room of a local YMCA only because he was so fat his genitals could not be seen.

Former NCAA college swimming champ and women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines is now organizing to support the Illinois teen with a rally to be held on Thursday at Rotary Park in Springfield in cooperation with the Illinois Freedom Caucus.

The Illinois Freedom Caucus posted a statement saying they were proud of Wheeler’s courage to share her experience publicly.

“What we are seeing here is a result of the radical left’s agenda to put young girls in harm’s way for the sake of catering to confused biological men who think they are women. In this case, a Springfield YMCA would try to silence and gaslight a high school girl, Abbigail Wheeler, for speaking up against men exposing themselves and watching her fellow teammates change in their locker room. Where are her rights? Where are her feminist activists at?” the legislators said in their statement.

Bishop Who Did Exorcism for Marriage Equality Now Targets Trans People

The Roman Catholic bishop of Springfield, Ill., who famously held an exorcism in response to marriage equality, has now gone after transgender people.

Bishop Thomas Paprocki’s pastoral guide to gender identity, finalized in January but just now being widely circulated, calls for students in Catholic schools as well as adult church employees and volunteers to be referred to according to the sex and name assigned them at birth, and to “conduct themselves in accord to their biological sex at all times.” The penalty for violation is expulsion or firing.

Just as it would be pastorally reckless to provide weight-loss resources to a visibly gaunt anorexic who thinks she is overweight, it is equally reckless to encourage someone with gender dysphoria to undergo hormone treatment and/or genital mutilation.”

The document says that sexual identity is “God-given” and that gender cannot be changed. “We should accept and care for our bodies as they were created,” it says, although granting that “appropriate medical care” may be acceptable for people who are intersex (although, in fact, not all intersex people desire medical intervention).

The guide goes on to say that everyone should use restrooms and locker rooms designated for their birth sex when on church property, and that students who participate in sports must be assigned to teams according to their “biological sex.”

It notes that Pope Francis has spoken out against gender transition. (Also, however, he once met with a transgender man from Spain who later said he found Francis to be “kindness personified.”)

Catholic LGBTQ groups were outraged by the Springfield diocese’s guide. “The approaches prescribed in this document are of deep concern,” said Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA, in a press release. “The guidance this document gives to schools and other Catholic organizations on dealing with transgender and nonbinary people and families could cause real harm. It denies the truth of their realities and says parents who help their transgender kids get the kinds of services they need are subjecting them to ‘child abuse and genital mutilation.’ Once again, Bishop Paprocki is displaying a dangerous and willful ignorance of current medical and mental health standards.”

She also noted the high rate of suicide attempts among trans people due to societal rejection, and that many leave their faith communities because of rejection there.

Linda Roberts, a transgender woman who heads DignityUSA’s Transgender Support Caucus, added, “The demands that students be called by names and pronouns consistent with the sex assigned at birth, that they be denied use of restroom and locker facilities consistent with who they know themselves to be, and that they play sports based on the gender assigned at birth add tremendous burdens to children who have probably struggled for years to accept the truth of their identity. This policy will add to their sense of exclusion and shame and will make it more difficult for families to do the right thing for their transgender and nonbinary children.”

DignityUSA has started a petition against the guide. “We ask Bishop Paprocki to immediately withdraw this policy, and to enter into real dialogue with transgender people, families, and their medical and mental health care providers,” it states.

Robert Shine of New Ways Ministry likewise condemned the document. “Threatening to fire an employee or expel a student who may already be marginalized is in no way consistent with church teaching,” he wrote on the group’s website. “Bishop Paprocki’s nearly unparalleled crusade against LGBTQ people is shameful. His dangerous wielding of authority harms many people not only in his diocese, but in the wider church.”

Paprocki’s previous anti-LGBTQ actions have included holding an exorcism “for the sin of same-sex marriage” in 2013 when the governor of Illinois signed a marriage equality bill into law; saying that Satan is behind the marriage equality movement; and ordering the priests in his diocese to deny communion or church burials to people in same-sex marriages unless they have repented of the “sin” of being gay. He recently objected to a new Illinois law mandating that public schools teach about the contributions of LGBTQ people (it doesn’t affect Catholic or other private schools), saying they should not be considered “role models to be emulated.”

Unable to buy equipment online because of limited inventory and "skyrocketing" prices, Gillan purchased old equipment from a local high school: barbells, bumper plates, 40-, 80- and 100-pound dumbbells and bands. He purchased rubber matting from a local tractor store.

Gillan said his resourcefulness was forged during four years playing at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a historically black university. During offseasons when he and his teammates didn't have access to the gym, their surroundings became their workout room. They bench-pressed and squatted logs, they did dips and pullups on metal bars at local parks, and Gillan hopped fences to punt on neighboring fields when access to their football field was prohibited.

"One thing I notice about a lot of historically black colleges is they're very underfunded," Gillan said, stressing that he and other student-athletes had to be creative. "Maybe it got me prepared for this weird period."

Blake Martinez's father, Marc, had a master plan: purchase a plot of land 15 minutes from the family home in Tucson, Arizona, and build a facility for his son to train and live. It didn't take long for the idea to become Martinez's reality.

But familiarity with his new franchise is a luxury Martinez, 26, doesn't have.

With New York and New Jersey being one of the epicenters of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, Martinez doesn't know when he'll be able to travel to the facility or even meet members of the Giants organization for the first time.

"It's not like I've been on the team for a while and I know the guys already. So, it's been tough in that aspect, connecting with guys," he said.

Martinez said the pandemic has taught him "I literally have zero excuses not to show up the first day and make sure I'm 100 percent ready to go and help push all of the younger guys to that level if they haven't gotten there yet."

And it looks like right now we're going to show up for camp -- if we show up for camp -- in the middle of the fire of trying to figure out who's going to make the team and trying to get ready for a season. That can be overwhelming."

With their players scattered across the country, NFL strength and conditioning coaches feel more like part-time sleuths and office managers than in-person trainers.

"We kind of went more into equipment sales and trying to be a liaison to help guys get set up and make sure they're doing the right thing," said Justus Galac, now in his seventh year as the New York Jets' head strength and conditioning coach. "What we found was, guys in the Southern states and more into the Midwest had more access than our guys in the Northeast and West Coast."

This time of year is crucial for strength staffs, not only for getting players in shape but also for getting new players up to speed with their programs. "And we've lost that," Galac said.

In fact, the Jets' weight room underwent a face-lift this offseason, complete with a new floor, turf accents and equipment. "And nobody's using it," Galac said. "It's sitting empty. The players haven't even seen it yet."

Finding space and serenity in the countryside

James Washington misses football. And, occasionally, his farm.

The 26-acre property the Steelers wide receiver purchased near his hometown of Abilene, Texas, made it easy for him to comply with social distancing rules. "It just doesn't feel right," he said. "Everybody feels like we should be at the facility, doing physical stuff, getting ready to go. ... Even if there's no fans, we still have to go out there and just go 110 percent, even if it would feel weird. Fans help make the game. It's really crazy to think about.
