I think somebody in the 911 writers room has a love of Hemingway. That 612 scene with Buck and Dr Salazar harped on Italy and finding your level “in another country” which is the title of a Hemingway short story set in Italy in which the narrator narrowly escapes death but sustains a leg injury that needs rehab. Bonus point: 611 is called In Another Life which has to be a play on In Another Country, right???
Anyway the summaries and analyses that I read about the short story share A Lot in common with where Buck is rn in his healing journey. Lots of existential themes, bonding with people who’ve had a similar sense of dread/alienation over near-death experiences, etc. Also in the semi-autobiographical story, the young narrator (a stand in for Hemingway himself who rehabbed from a leg injury sustained while driving an ambulance for the red cross 🤔) befriends a major in the Italian army who lost his wife unexpectedly…to pneumonia which got me thinking about being worried about Buck’s lungs and the clot from s3 and the lung contusion in 611. From what I can figure that parallels Eddie most strongly and links Buck to Shannon in Eddie’s story…again! (but also loosely to Bobby’s past if I take off my clown goggles for a sec however bobby’s wife died of her burn injuries more than anything specifically lung related)
And if I squint, I can see parallels between The Old Man and the Sea and Eddie 👀 That would somehow feel interesting if not quite spot on given all the friggin focus on the beach/sea painting in Eddie’s house. Santigo (Eddie) going after the marlin (a relationship) and losing it to sharks (past unresolved trauma, old unhealthy emotional patterns, etc) but when he accepts his failure and returns home, he’s able to regain the faith of his peers, reconnect with his bestie, and fish on for another day. I feel like that could be a fun metaphor for lessons Eddie has learned and being ready to apply them in a new relationship…with Buck
Anyway I don’t know if this is a thing but it’s definitely got me thinking thoughts. Full disclosure: I haven’t read In Another Country and I did read Old Man and the Sea but it was a gazillion years ago so all my musings are based on internet summaries and thematic analyses. If a Hemingway scholar amongst the fandom wants to weigh in, I’m here for it!!

In Another Country (Hong Sang-soo, 2012)
This was the first movie of this guy's that failed to click for me way back when, probably because of stubborn refusal. Big art cinema actress and humour to rope in big dumb art cinema audiences now you're seeing success in Europe? Blargh. Don't gratify them. But now it welcomely feels completely along his continuum. Only effective communication made to goats, the sea, yourself alone. To misaligned archetypes scribbled down on a page to work through longing, curiosity, self-deprecation, divergence and the unresolvable.

Shows you should save physically immediately
Over the Garden Wall -- It's being pulled from HBO Max on August 31 and knowing HBO, there's a chance it'll be pulled sooner. *I have now made a Google Drive of all the episodes of OTGW. Please, please, please, PLEASE, save these on a physical device.
The Owl House -- Disney has tried to bury this show many times (giving it a weird release schedule, cutting the budget, etc) and has even cancelled the show. Also, Disney+ is going to nuke their catalogue soon and I doubt TOH will survive*I have now also saved all the episodes of TOH. Click here for the posts with all of the episodes
Amphibia -- I know less about the behind the scenes BS than TOH but Amphibia was screwed over by Disney mainly by poor promotion. Also since one of the protagonist is openly bisexual*, like TOH, I really can't imagine this would survive.*Amphibia has also been saved. Go here for the post with all the episodes.
Steven Universe -- Cartoon Network cancelled Steven Universe and gave it a weird release schedule, it has also just been pulled from HBO Max.
Gravity Falls -- Once again, Disney+ is going to nuke their catalogue at some point in the future and between Wendy being canonically bi, Sheriff Blubs and Deputy Durland being in a relationship, and Alex Hirsch (being the amazing man that he is) constantly calling Disney out on their BS, I imagine that Disney would be more than willing to nuke Gravity Falls. *I’ve also saved Gravity Falls now go to the main post here to see all the episodes.
and most importantly
Every single show, book, game, fanfiction, movie, etc you've ever loved
We now know that at any moment's notice, streaming services can and will just nuke their catalogue without hesitation. If it's digital, it can be removed and there's a likely chance you'll never see it again.
So, please take some time to save anything you love on an external device. It could be a box set (it can be official or fan-made one), a USB, or anything.
If you have a physical copy of something, it's yours forever and no one can take that away from you.
*Edit because I’ve seen some confusion about this. Read this again, it’s “one of the protagonists” not “the protagonist.” Sasha is the one who’s bi, Anne’s sexuality hasn’t been confirmed.
Also in addition to this, people have reblogged this to say Steven Universe is still on HBO. Since I don’t have HBO, I’ve been going off of what people have been saying and I’ve seen it mentioned that HBO was taking off SU. You should still save it though.
*Edit 2 if any of the links here don’t work, check the original post as I might’ve changed/updated them. If that still doesn’t work, send me an ask or DM I’ll give them to you.

We have moved past Maya and Franziska wingmanning narumitsu as a society. They would not fucking do that. We need to realise the truth which is that Larry and Gumshoe would try to wingman them and only succeed through failure

Recently Viewed: In Another Country
I’ve been meaning to better acquaint myself with Hong Sang-soo’s work for quite a while now. Granted, that’s no easy task; he’s among the most prolific filmmakers in the industry these days, currently averaging two productions per year. Still, having thoroughly enjoyed Grass during its limited theatrical run back in 2018, I was hungry to discover what else the director had to offer, and the Criterion Channel provided the perfect opportunity: In Another Country, his first English-language feature.
Tumblr media
Blending a whimsically enigmatic plot with a rigidly naturalistic visual style, the movie tells the episodic story of three French tourists—each named Anne, each played by Isabelle Huppert—visiting the sleepy seaside community of Mohang. How these vignettes (as well as the framing device that bridges them) interlink remains ambiguous: several recurring characters (including a philandering celebrity, his pregnant wife, and a comically adorable himbo lifeguard) frequently intersect and collide, but their relationships and interpersonal conflicts are often inconsistent and contradictory. Indeed, multiple interactions are repeated nearly verbatim—like refrains in a poem, or a song’s chorus.
The narrative’s subjective approach to identity, chronology, and reality (themes further explored and elaborated on in 2015’s Right Now, Wrong Then) is grounded by the decidedly objective imagery. The camera neither comments upon nor participates in the action; it merely observes events from a distance, static except for the occasional pan or zoom. These movements are rarely “motivated” in the conventional sense; Hong apparently feels no need to “justify” repositioning his frame, instead freely pointing the lens at whatever happens to be relevant. Edits are equally uncommon; every scene is one shot and every shot is one scene, allowing the performers (or, to be more precise, their intentionally awkward, fumbling multilingual dialogue) to guide the pace and rhythm.
Tumblr media
In Another Country certainly won’t be everybody’s bottle of soju, but personally, I find Hong’s distinctive voice almost hypnotically charming. Like Jim Jarmusch, he celebrates the mundane, the ordinary, the minimalistic—and in a cinematic landscape littered with blockbusters and saturated with spectacle, there is great value in that restraint.

“Your brother is adorable.” The cashier cooed at Danny, peering over the counter with a smile. “What’s his name?”
Danny looked down to the surly, scowling little de-aged Batman currently holding onto his hand, glaring up at the cashier with bright blue eyes.
Things had already been bad enough when he’d gotten caught in a fight in Gotham, but things went from bad to worse when a magician had hit Batman with a de-aging spell and then shoved them through a portal.
Into a different fucking dimension.
Because of course neither of their lives could be easy. And now the two of them were stuck in Iowa in the middle of nowhere, at a truck stop gas station, trying to go on a cross-country roadtrip to reach the nearest hero city and get home.
He looked up and smiled awkwardly, trying to come up with a name off the top of his head — one of the heroes called Batman ‘B’ when he got hit right? B for Batman, right. B… B… Bee… Bees.
“Buzz.” He said, and tried not to grimace as the cashier’s face warped with surprise. “Like the astronaut.”
This was gonna be a long trip.
