Indian Supreme Court’s decision to not legalise same sex marriage is definitely heartbreaking and a major step back for LGBTQ+ rights in the country but it’s important to note that CJI Chandrachud does understand the issue at hand and did clarify the basics that the majority in the nation fail to understand.

The lawyers who represented the Government kept arguing that Same Sex marriage cannot be legalised on a national scale because it is an “urban-elite” notion perpetrated by consumption of western ideology.

So if I am slightly happy about anything it is that our CJI made a statement specifically against this argument.

France overtakes Russia and becomes world’s second largest arms exporter

The latest analysis of arms transfers conducted by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) found that the US led the global arms race, while France outpaced Russia in weapons shipments, according to Politico.

Paris has significantly increased its export market share from 7.2 per cent in the previous five-year period to 11 per cent due to efforts to expand into such regions as India. Pieter Wezeman, a senior researcher at SIPRI, noted that sanctions imposed on Russia “contributed to the increase in French arms exports.”

France’s rise was fuelled by major deals for Dassault Aviation’s Rafale fighter jet with countries, such as Qatar, Egypt and India.

In the past few years India, Egypt and Indonesia all choose French combat aircraft in competitions that included Russian alternatives.

A school in Gujarat’s Mehsana district was forced to come up with an apology for celebrating the Muslim festival Eid al Adha on the school premises for allegedly ‘hurting sentiments of the Hindu community’.

School management in a written apology mentioned the move as ‘a mistake’ and stated that they won’t hold such an event in the future.

The apology from the school Principal came after Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a right-wing organization and some parents protested against the celebrations of Eid in the middle school, Kids Kingdom: A Great Place to Grow, in Mehsana district on Friday, June 30. The video of the protests surfaced on social media sites substantiate the protests.

The director of the school, Rashi Gautam said in a written apology letter, “We had organized Bakrid celebrations in the school which has hurt the sentiments of Hindu society. It was not our intention to hurt the sentiments of any religion. We are also Hindus and believe in each Hindu gods and goddesses. Consider it our first and last mistake as a Hindu and forgive us.”

The letter further stated, “We apologize to all Hindu organizations, Hindu society, and to all those who are working for the betterment of the Hindu religion.”

Achal Tyagi, Superintendent of Police, Mehsana told Maktoob, “It was parents who protested against the Bakra Eid celebrations and the matter is settled now as the school administration produced a written apology to the parents as they were not informed about the celebrations taking place.”

this, and many other cases like this where school officials have to apologise, be suspended or resign, are happening in a country where even schools unaligned with any religious organisations celebrate hindu festivals and make all students (regardless of their faith) participate. students also have to learn verses from hindu scriptures, and many muslim students portray hindu deities in plays and skits. -source-

📹 Massive protests are confronted with teargas, armed police with rubber bullets and drones as thousands of farmers, mostly in India's northern Punjab region, protest on Tuesday demanding a Minimum Support Price or MSP for all crops to raise farmer's income.

Dozens of Farmer's unions participated in the strikes, calling for a "Delhi Chalo" or March to Delhi.

Police in and around the capital have erected barriers on highways surrounding New Delhi, and have begun firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the approaching farmers.

Tractors, along with thousands of farm hands, are seen in footage nearing the outskirts of New Delhi, in the northern Haryana state, being confronted by officers with gas and smoke bombs, including some dropped from buzzing drones overhead.

Authorities have shut down Internet services in some areas where protestors approach, and have erected concrete roadblocks and barriers, while local officials have banned public gatherings and are deploying extra security personnel.

Officials in New Delhi emphasized that sufficient police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to all entry points to the city.

Farmers are demanding dozens of changes, including a new MSP or floor price for crops to increase and guarantee farmer income, as well as a full debit waiver, according to local union officials.

Political officials in New Delhi say they're open to talks, with Agriculture Minister, Arjun Munda telling reporters on Tuesday that the Federal government already is "bound to protect the interest of farmers."

"Farmers also need to understand that inconvenience shouldn’t be caused to the public,” Minister Munda said, adding the government was always ready for negotiations with the Farmer's unions.

“We are ready to do everything possible to find a solution to this issue,” he said.

The price of potatoes hike up by 10% due to a decrease of output production.

prices went up steeply because the average output fell as a result of a crop damage that was incurred in the post rains last November.

The current all-India retail price for potato stands at Rs. 26/kg as per the latest data released by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA). When compared to previous month, the price has increased by 10.18% whereas the same month in the last year saw a 32% decline.

The wholesale prices for the famous kitchen staple touched Rs 1,944/quintal over the weekend, which was 11.44% higher than last month and 33.18% rise compared to the last season. Potato output is down, two big producing states – of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, traders said.

In the cold rooms, the load at present is said to decrease by 10-12%," says Gopal Sharma, a potato trader from Uttar Pradesh, "even though farmers are not yet able to cut their losses and sell their stocks because of weak demand."

Traders indicated that potatoes prices will be in a high position and are going to remain considerably high as the yield overall is expected to be low this year. The latest agricultural ministry's first advance estimate for 2023-24 shows a slight decrease in potato production to about 60.14 million tonnes from about 58.99 million tonnes in previous year.

The crop sowing in November got ruined due to late rains, which again caused the re-plantation of crops in December. The truth is that rains in April tore up the plants that were actually close to harvesting.
