100 Portraits Training | Part 3 and 4 These are mostly from my ref folders for Adolin and Renarin :D Part three
15 - 16) Australian actor Remy Hii
17) Filipino-American actor Vincent Rodriguez III
18) German tennis player Alexander Zverev
19) Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto
20-21) Chinese weightlifter Lü Xiaojun
22) Burmese-Amercian mixed martial artist Aung La Nsang
Next to actors I looked for sportspersons to use as references, because they have enough of a public image that I could reference them with name (which felt better than just using random people from the internet). Actors are often shown often being very attractive (I should take more refs directly from movies...) and it was nice to also try more day-to-day faces. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, of course, but I wanted to look for pictures which didn't having the person they showed looking beautiful as their main objective.
Part four
23 - 24) Burmese mixed martial artist Aung La Nsang
25) Indonesian badminton player Tontowi Ahmad
26) South Korean sabre fencer Oh Sang-uk
27)Philipine pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena
28) Filipino-Canadian actor Manny Jacinto once more
As for links in this one hmm... This page by the Consortium of Asian American Theaters and Artists has shot overview of some terms which are important to be aware of for representation (albeit from a theater perspective, but it's still useful) This piece by Khoo Wei Shawn is a brief look into how racial representation has changed in the cartoons using the Ducktales series as an example. His footnotes could be useful for anyone wanting to get deeper into the topic, too. And lastly another take on racism in animation by Ruth Dubb. This one looks at the depiction of black people in early American cartoons and the stereotypes that came with those. Most sources I could find were from an American view. Or least from people living within a Western and American context. In part that's probably due to the language barrier (I have some in German, but there we go again... difficult to share that with most people here). Different countries have their own history of people being racialised and how that intersects with other issues and themes. So if you know of or have interesting takes from non-American sources and perspectives on the topics, please share. :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1 – Start of the project Part 2 – Kaladin Part 5 – Dalinar Part 6 & 7 – Shallan and Jasnah Part 8 & 9 - various people and skin tones Part 10 – a little bit for The Lopen Part 11 & 12 - Wit and Navani Part 13 - ofmd und Dev Patel :)

Black Cherry Ice Cream Tracker
So, I know a lot of people right now are concerned about privacy, especially around period trackers. Being able to track your period is pretty important for all sorts of health reasons, but obviously that data could be used against you in certain situations.
So! I made an "Ice Cream" tracker - a small, completely offline app that lets you track your periods (and also ice cream) in a non-explicit way. The data is stored locally on your device and is automatically deleted when you delete the app. There's no online functionality at all expect the initial download and updates from Google Play (sorry iPhone users, I don't have an apple dev account yet).
I went out of my way to make it as backward compatible as possible (it's been tested down to Android 9) and I used machine translation so it's available in the following languages:
Chinese (Simplified)
French (France)
German
Indonesian
Italian
Japanese
Portuguese (Brazil)
Spanish (Spain)
Spanish (Latin America)
Thai
The app currently uses the language settings on the device, but I might add some user settings later, in which case I'll add a language select option.
It also shows you your next expected period and a general fertility window (awkwardly phrased as a "possible messy time" because making that not explicit was harder than expected).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's currently available here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anonymous.BlackCherry
I'd love some feedback (especially on the translations - I checked them as best I could, but I'm only fluent in English).
I have no intention of ever adding monetisation. I might not be able to add features to it quickly, but I want it to be free forever to whoever finds it useful.

Something I hardly ever see in video games is people in the game complaining about how much all those corpses used as set dressing would stink. (There was one comment, IIRC, in DAI, in the bog level.)
CW mildly graphic discussion of scent relating to death. Mention of emesis and bowels.
Putrescense, the 'smell of death/decomposition' is something you can sorta get used to? (Not really, but you can learn to breathe differently and become more inured to it. You can learn tricks of the trade, vaporub really does work to some extent.) I mean, I was a stereotype of people who can eat and work on cadavers, but it’s an incredibly strong smell. And it's not like I have a dull sense of smell. I'm a supertaster/smeller genetype. (I was a Forensic anthropologist/crime scene tech for a while after uni, that's how I know.)
People who haven't been around it enough to get used to it are likely to vomit. The rookie upchucking on scene isn't a stereotype for no reason. Even though I'd built up some tolerance, at this point I haven't worked in that field for decades so even I would likely get sick from it. And it's an odor you never forget.
Putrescine and Cadaverine are two organic chemical forms that a cadaver often produces, and they're both often on the list of 'worst smells known to humanity'.
The Indonesian Corpse flower smells exactly as advertised and is often as high as number 2 on those lists.
Add in the char on some of those set dressings, (burning human is not a great combination of smells, I guarantee it) or the saponification likely in water burials, or the blight itself and dear gods these people would be gagging all over the place. And what about the scents of released sphincters that often occur around death? People don't usually enjoy the outhouse smells that often come with a dead body.
It's also something people can smell a long way off. Roughly a quarter to half a mile away, depending on climate and wind direction. It's also a smell that clings. You get around a dead body, all your gear, your hair and skin, it's all going to stink of it.
But it's really rare to even get a mention of it. I know, I know, bad smells aren't fun or sexy, but it's actually enough for me to get thrown from immersion because of it.
Even if you posit that they'd possibly be used to it because of the world being so brutal, I'd find that incredibly arguable.
People really don't like the smell of death, and we do a lot to get rid of it. We're hard wired, brain wise, to avoid it or get rid of it. It makes us uncomfortable. And the blight hadn't been seen for, what? 400 years? So very little way to get used to that. This isn't even getting into all the 'lack of insects and other scavengers' issue. In Thedas especially, there's damned good reasons to, I dunno, not leave corpses around so they don't get demon possessed and come home for dinner, too. (Yes, I think I'm hilarious 😆.)
Death stinks. Set dressers, writers, and game devs could probably consider that.

Far Cry 3's Rook Islands - how based on Indonesia is it actually is
according to an Indonesian who is not exactly qualified to write this post but by god will i make that everyone else's problem. Long post under the cut in case you'd like to know the fun facts and insights about the game and Rook and how much they got right and wrong.
Here's what I will discuss:
Locations, Flora & Fauna
The Rakyat and what they preach and practice
Citra, Dennis and Vaas
I would like to preface by saying Indonesia is a big ass archipelago, literally the biggest archipelagic state in the world, and we have many cultures, sub-languages, and various indigenous tribes of which I'm not part of. So there could be a possibility that the FC3 game devs were basing Rook especially the Rakyat on certain tribes I'm not familiar with or with an actual cultural rep who knows more than I do, but somehow I doubt that too, considering how they seem to just base Rook vaguely on various Polynesian areas.
1. Locations, Flora & Fauna
The Rook Islands page in the Far Cry 3 Wiki does a great job of explaining this in more depth than I do, but to TL;DR it: the flora & fauna in Rook makes it seem like Rook's most likely in the eastern side of Indonesia (sharing the same fauna and flora as Papua New Guinea and Australia). This is especially evident since Rook has komodo dragons and they're only available in Nusa Tenggara Timur.
However, the vastly different animals in the North and South Islands of Rook indicates the possibility of Rook running through the Wallace Line, which irl happens between Bali and Lombok, two very close islands which have vastly different faunas.
So actually to squash down the locations into two tiny islands and grab all the crazy animals into two distinct parts like this actually happens irl, which is cool!
Tumblr media
I got nothing much to add about plants cus they all seem to be pretty straightforward and all are available in Indonesia from what I see... with the exception that I previously had believed that the white plant that Jason can pick to craft immunity effects are jasmines, but it seems that officially they're tiares which are more commonly known as being used as leis by the Polynesian people. Either way, both Jasmines and Tiares are small, worn traditionally by women, smells nice and have some spooky connotations, so same difference to me :^)
The only location in-game with an Indonesian name is Beras Town. Beras means 'uncooked rice', so there's a little fun fact to note since when you get there the first time to see Hoyt shooting at the natives it was fittingly in a rice paddy field.
2. The Rakyat and what they preach and practice
The Rakyat is a dead giveaway that Rook is based on Indonesia or Malaysia. Rakyat means 'people' in both languages, and is pronounced correctly in-game. However, most of the Rakyat weren't speaking Indonesian and spoke with a New Zealand accent so are they like. Samoan? Maori?? God knows.
Indonesia has certain tribes who have tattooing as part of their history and culture, but the tatau seems to be based more on the Samoan tatau, at least from the name itself. Tattoos are called tato in Indonesian and not tatau. The design is also not like any known designs from tribes that have tattooing culture in Indonesia. With how Dennis explains each animal on Jason's tatau had meaning in the Rakyat's history for warriors, it seems like the entire thing was a creative liberty.
Other than the tataus, there's not much we know of about The Rakyat other than they're natives of the island. There's a side mission where you have to spy on a cheating husband, this one stuck out to me for a couple reasons. One being it's funny as hell, and also because the name of the guy the husband is cheating with is Jalak. Jalak is the Indonesian name for a Starling, there's a specific sub-species of the bird that is endemic to Bali, Indonesia. It's extra-funny if it's implied that the man the husband is cheating with is named after a bird because the word bird in Indonesia (burung) is a euphemism for dick.
Tumblr media
Another side mission also has a minor character you have to find called 'Senin' which was pronounced wrong but it's an Indonesian word that means 'Monday'.
Those are all I remember, I'll edit if I remember more!
3. Citra, Dennis and Vaas
Citra - let's start with the most glaring thing. Citra is not supposed to be said with a 'S' sound but a 'Ch' sound. (if you go to google translate and type in Citra in Indonesia and listen to it, that's the right pronunciation). If they wanted to pronounce it like they did in-game, they should've just named her Sitra which would still sound pretty natural as an Indonesian name.
Other than her name pronunciation error, the name itself is actually pretty solid. Citra means image, like 'made in the image of god' kind of image. Considering she is the Rakyat's leader and is obsessed with cultivating an image of strength and traditional values, it's a fitting name.
Citra is also the only character to speak proper Bahasa Indonesia. She actually pronounces the words correctly and speaks clearly, which I was pleasantly surprised with! Just ignore the way the Indonesian is written in subtitles cus they are completely wrong. She only says a few lines so I'll discuss them here:
Senapan ke bawah - said when Jason first shows up with Dennis at her temple and she asks her men to stand down. Translates to 'Lower your guns.'
Berikan saya herbal - said when she asks for the first potion that Jason has to drink to get the vision that led him to hallucinate where to find Willis. Translates to: 'Give me the potion/herbs'.
Cinta untuk anak-anak kami - you can miss this if you didn't pick her ending. This is the only correctly subtitled Indonesian line, and it translates to 'love for our children'. Not child. Children. Plural. Miss ma'am... what in the everliving fuck are you trying to do hoping to have children with a guy who's shooting blanks at this point and who you proceed to kill immediately after? Let's move on.
Dennis speaks Bahasa Melayu, which is quite interesting to note, considering he is a foreigner who tries very hard to fit in. Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia are very similar to each other, hence why we can understand each other, but there is still a distinct difference between them. Since we're overanalyzing, it could be said that Dennis and Citra has never been 100% on the same page with how they speak slightly different languages.
Vaas never once speaks Bahasa Indonesia or Melayu, which considering how he has thrown away his Rakyat roots, makes some sense. And I love Michael Mando but I think he would definitely butcher the language lmao so it's great that they didn't make him say any native lines. Vaas is also not an Indonesian name, though we do have vas as a word, since vaas is Dutch for 'vase' and we picked up a few words when Netherlands colonized Indonesia. but i doubt they used the word vase for a villain name but hell, who knows. If we wanna get funky I guess we could say that Vaas was always colonized/under someone's control even down to his name.
Conclusion
Far Cry 3's Rook personally for me didn't do a good job at being Indonesian enough, from how villages look, to location names, to little things like the lack of food stalls that you would 100% be able to find if you just walk down the road in any location here. Though to be fair, it was 2012 and as such, a different time with different standards that they have since then set higher for themselves. Ubisoft did a much better job at adapting Kyrat into a believable country that was based off Nepal with rich world-building from NPC notes, locations in map, to the little items you can loot from the enemies that included Bagh-chal pieces! FC5 was also very true to Montana from what I'm led to believe from the countless praises in Reddit, and FC6 had a lot of great representation too.
At the end of the day, FC3's a great game with a solid map based vaguely off a location I just happen to be familiar with, and that is still pretty fucking cool.

Headcanon: Eva Age
Not a discourse, but people should stop seeing Eva as this barely legal woman 😅 I have seen many people headcanon her as 18-19 years old which as Indonesian myself i was shock because while true she look younger compare to other woman and i admit she "naive" and still has lot of dream. However i dont think she THAT young.
First I dont think Coral Island game dev will make someone that young with how many older looking dateables. Second this is something that non Indonesian may not aware because is need cultural context. Eva is Javanese woman (The biggest ethnicity in Indonesia) and Javanese usually not expected to study or work far from home unless they forced too (for example economic reason make them desperate to go far for job). Because Javanese people dont like too take risk/ scared of doing something new. Which you can sometimes see on Eva dialogue how she afraid to take risk or how Joko not interested to try new job.
Yeah Eva often talk how she not well off/rich and so need saving money, but she also not save money for helping her family infact is seems like her family is financialy okay without Eva help. That why I cant see her that young. Her family situation give me impression she move to Coral Island mostly on her own reason.
Usually they only brave to move far if they reach career oriented age which in Indonesia usually after 21 years old. Because first year student in university/advance school in indonesia usually around 18 or 17 years old.
I am still not sure if Eva went through university but atleast i do think she go to some skill classes or have some side job related to bakery before go to Coral Island. So that why I headcanon her as atleast 23 years old which yes you can found lot of 22-25 years old woman in Indonesia that look as youthful as Eva.
I need to said this because i had seen some non Indonesian player uncomfortable dating her because they though she around 18-19 years old which okay good reason, but I dont think she that young haha that why i need to clarified 😅

[I.D.: A gifset containing four gifs of the underwater adventure game SAMUDRA.
Gif 1 shows two shots. In one, the player, dressed in a loose stripey shirt and an old diving helmet, holds a lantern up to stare at an underwater volacano. The next scene shows the player shining their lantern on a giant eye that opens.
Gif 2 shows two scenes about stealth. In one scene, the player and another character hide behind old cars to avoid a searchlight from a submarine-like machine. In the other scene, the player scoots along a piece of metal to avoid the sweeping searchlight of another machine.
Gif 3 shows two shots. One shot focuses on a turtle with an elongated neck whose waist appears to be squeezed by a plastic drink holder. Another shot focuses on a sleeved, purple tentacle playing music on a guitar-like instrument.
Gif 4 shows a montage of four scenes. One scene shows the player inside a building hiding behind a pillar as a submarine-like machine shines a searchlight through a window. Another scene shows a large, dark fish swimming through the polluted environment. Another scene shows an angler fish swimming through the environment, except with several submarine-like machines following it. The last scene shows the player running away from a white creature with long arms crawling after them.
end I.D.]
SAMUDRA is a handrawn, enviromentally-focused game about a child’s journey across a polluted sea! Ahhhh, thanks to dev conversation on Twitter, I can now confirm that Olas' name means "waves," translated from Spanish.
I'd found that translation before, but I couldn't understand how it made sense for her. Apparently, it has to do with how her illusions "sweep over" people.
So we have:
Sila = siła (Polish and probably other Slavic languages for "strength")
Prav = praw/prawda (Slavic words pertaining to truth and law and rights)
Cinta = Indonesian word for love
Olas = Spanish for "waves," referring to how her powers overtake and wash over people
Ah, it's such a relief to understand them all!

On the one hand, one thing that's making Potion Permit not as compelling for me as, say, Cattails or Stardew Valley is the fact that there's very little real sense of time passing, by which I mean there are no seasons at all. These kinds of sim games rely on natural cycles, so it feels a bit weird.
On the other hand, the dev team is Indonesian, so perhaps it's just a write what you know thing, which I can respect. Would've been nice to at least have wet season and dry season, though.
I want a farming/light survival sim with tropical seasons now, actually.

Welp PQube is scummy as hell.
Stealing diversity grants meant for their indonesian indie devs.
I hope the devs get their publishing rights back and can publish their game without PQube

Really loving Coral Island so far, the NPCs are so enjoyable and the world looks so luscious and beautiful. I’m also loving all the Southeast Asian (Indonesian?) inspired designs. It really looks like no other game I’ve played. You can tell the devs put a lot of love, thought, and effort into this game. My only real complaint is that my game tends to freeze every couple of minutes, but it comes back fairly quickly with no other issue. I imagine this is mostly due to it being just released for Xbox—it’ll likely improve with their next patch. I’m excited to see what other improvements and additions the devs add in the future!
