Coming Back - a little ep 2 Inej and Kaz ‘what if’ exploration
Finally! I wrote something again! Yippiiee!!! And it’s all Kaz’ fault! (Thank you, Kaz!)
So, I was just wondering... what if after their argument in episode 2 Inej would come back to him instead of drinking with Jesper and therefore witness Pekka Rollins intimidation tactics...
You can check out a little teaser here or jump right to the full story on AO3!
“Maybe you crack a way across, but that doesn‘t solve this problem! Does it?”
“If I can‘t crack this, no one‘s going anywhere. “
“And if you do?”
“Then maybe you stay here.”
“Maybe I won‘t be here when you get back.”
***
Why? Why was she turning back?
Anger still rolled through her insides, twisting her guts into uncomfortable knots.
Then maybe you stay here.
The words of his outburst still rang through her mind, again and again. And with each time they echoed, it became harder to pretend that it was anger twisting her insides. Sure, it was, anger at Kaz for betraying her like that, but it was also so much more.
It was fear – no, fear wasn‘t even covering it, more like terror – of having to go back to the menagerie.
It was desperation. Losing her only hope at ever getting rid of the hold that place and Tante Heleen held over her.
It was fury at herself for being stupid enough to trust him. How could she have been so stupid. In the end he was just like everybody else.
But that‘s just it, wasn‘t it?
Kaz wasn‘t like everybody else.
She heaved a sigh, or maybe it was a groan. Anyway, it didn‘t matter, no one would hear it out here on the rooftops in the pouring rain. A deep breath later her insides were still churning, but the constant echo within her mind faded into the background. Instead, other memories jumped to the forefront. Of the iciness with which Kaz had growled Pekka Rollins‘ name. Of his glee at getting one over on Rollins when they’d snatched the heartrender first. Of him agreeing to this ludicrous endeavor with no time and no plan at all, which was so very unlike him. Well, it would be like him had it been for the money alone, but no, she knew him too well for that. This time, it wasn’t just about the money, it was because of – surprise – Pekka Rollins again.
This wasn‘t just the usual gang rivalry. Whatever was going on between the two, it was more than that. This was personal. Had to be. Personal enough for one Kaz Brekker to act impulsive and rash.
Unprepared.
It certainly was enough to snap the one thing at her that truly hurt.
She might know how to use a knife, but Kaz was a master when it came to using words to cut wounds.
She remembered the moment he‘d realized. When he‘d closed his eyes, maybe even regretted his words? She remembered him shouting after her, but she had ignored him on purpose, too furious, too agitated, like always when she felt the invisible noose of the menagerie tighten around her neck again. No matter what she did, she just couldn‘t get rid of it. She only ever managed to loosen it. Sometimes even enough that she dared to forget it was there.
Foolish. So damn foolish.
“By the Saints!” she grumbled, throwing her head back, embracing the cold raindrops on her skin. But only for a moment, then she’s moving again. Her feet find their way back to Kaz’ window on their own. It didn’t matter if the roof was dry or wet, at least not to her. She knew perfectly well where she could step without slipping.
She’d get back in and get to the bottom of this. She’d keep her cool this time around. She needed to make sure… yeah, what? That he could pull this off? That he would back out of this madness? She wasn’t even sure herself.
You need to make sure that you’re not wrong about him.
She scoffed at herself. Yeah, not wrong about the man who saw her as nothing but a ‘one of a kind’ investment, nothing more.
One of a kind, yeah, and yet immediately cast aside once something more valuable enters the stage. Like one million kruge. Or a chance at revenge on Pekka Rollins.
She shook her head. This was getting her nowhere.
Kaz’ window was right next to her now, she only needed to slip inside. She still wasn’t sure why she came back or what she expected to achieve and yet she was here, some part of her insistent on coming back. She should’ve gone into the club and gotten a drink, maybe talked to Jesper if only to get a tiny part of this twisting knot of something within her untangled. But no, she was here instead and –
The sounds of a commotion sounded from inside. Then a louder thump like from a body hitting a hard surface, followed by a few grunts.
She’s inside in an instant, wide awake and alert, silent as the night and just as fluid as a shadow. Even the water dripping from her clothes didn’t seem to dare make a sound. She spots the shadow of movement, a figure stepping inside Kaz’ office.
A tall figure. Male. Imposing.
The sound of an unknown voice reached her a second before she’s at the corner, hidden away behind a pillar and peaking inside.
“Evening. Mr… Brekker is it,” the voice drawled, heavy with the rolling accent of the Wandering Isles. She knew that voice, had heard it before a few times but never from this close. Never from inside the Crow Club. She couldn’t help the shiver that ran down her spine.
And if that wasn’t enough, it barely took a quick look to know that this was bad and that she didn’t like this at all.
