For folks who are going through medical treatments involving infusions, injections, etc, it's usually annoying to work around clothes to make space for infusion ports and IV lines etc. Also, clinics and hospitals can be cold (literally) and between the treatments and the environment, it can get pretty uncomfortable on the body.
Bibipins, a small Black-owned business I've been following, is currently having pre-orders for these super cute and comfortable hoodies that have multiple zippers throughout locations where ports or IVs would be installed. I think it's brilliant and honestly wish these existed before.
If you know someone who might need this, please check it out. I'm thinking of getting the strawberry one myself. I've already ordered from this business before and really like her work and products. And we'd be supporting a small business too!
An important note: She's in Canada so there will be shipping costs. Please don't send this link to folks who are the type to complain about shipping or small businesses not giving discounts like Amazon, etc. Bibi has gotten so much harassment from jerk "customers" (in quotes because they don't actually buy anything) who demand Amazon-like shipping times, costs, and product discounts. Thank you!
Her website is here: https://bibipins.com/. She also has a lot of other cool and cute products, I hope you'll check her out!

Hagging Out, May 2023: Infusions pt. 2
My first idea was to make Four Thieves Vinegar, which I find historically fascinating, and I thought might be fun to experiment with in spell crafting.
Tumblr media
This infusion of herbs in vinegar was thought to prevent plague when worn on the hands, ears and temples. While this is unlikely, there is some thought that the use of wormwood could have acted as a flea repellent, which might have offered some limited protection.* I am doubtful, yet intrigued.
Originally I had planned on making a traditional recipe for it. Then I looked at the ingredient list for one and went, "I'm not tracking all of that down."
Instead I made a more modern version, using rosemary, sage, thyme, and mint (I considered throwing some wormwood in, since I have it, but decided I might prefer the version without for salads).
Due to lack of organization and time management skills, I failed to take my own recently stated advice on drying herbs for infusions, and given the time crunch, just wilted some for a few days. With the exception of the thyme, which my mom grew (my plant didn't survive last winter), I grew all of the herbs.
The traditional recipe called for white wine vinegar, but I didn't want to go buy that, so continuing in the spirit of just using what's on hand, I used apple cider vinegar, which I buy by the gallon. I'm lowkey obsessed with vinegar, so this is not the only type I have been known to buy by the gallon.
*source: wikipedia on the subject, which includes a recipe
I also wanted to try making rose water, since I have a rose bush in bloom. There's a couple of different methods, but I went with a simple one, in which you simmer clean rose petals in water until they lose their color, then strain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought it would look nice in bubble tea, with the multicolored tapioca pearls I have. While the rosewater did turn out a beautiful color, it's basically flavorless, which is unfortunate as I have two jars of it. The vinegar, on the other hand, is already delicious, despite needing to infuse for another week or so.

Kitchen Witchcraft: Orange Bitters for happiness, health, and prosperity
Tumblr media
Here we are in dreary January (again). The days are short and there is nothing left but monochrome colors. All life seems to have been skimmed off of the world - or at least all of the serotonin. I'm SAD - it's the SAD time of the year.
It also happens to be citrus season. Of all of the cures for the sads, citrus (and a ready application of the vitamin C it brings) remains the best cure* for a (mild) case of the sads. With this in mind, my partner and I decided that our seasonal batch of house bitters this year would be orange flavored.
Of all of the citrus that I have tried, orange is the one that I like the least out of season but one of the ones that I love the most come January when nothing else is edible. Orange has some of the cleansing properties of the other citruses while also adding the sweetening properties of happiness and abundance. This is the energy that I wanted to harness to help bring us into the new year with a positive attitude and a bright outlook on life.
Tumblr media
This recipe was loosely adapted from the book Bitters: A Spirited History of a Classic Cure-All with Cocktail Recipes & Formulas by Brad Thomas Parson which is a nice primer on the basics of bitters making. I changed the bittering agent (I do not care for Gentian root) and the base spirit from white liquor to brown since I will be adding my orange bitters primarily to cocktails made with brown liquor.
Orange Bitters
Zest three oranges 1/4 cup chopped dried orange peel 4 Cloves (abundance) 8 Green Cardamom pods, cracked (happiness) 1/4 tsp Coriander Seeds (healing) 4 tbs Wild Cherry Bark 1/4 tsp Allspice Berries (abundance) Wild Turkey 101 1 cup water 2 tbs Rich Syrup 2 jars with secure lids Making bitters is super easy - it is simply a long-form alcohol infusion. For the first two weeks, you infuse all of the herbal ingredients in the liquor and then you strain them out and use them to make a strong tea which you steep for another week. Then, you combine the liquor, strained tea, and rich syrup. From there, you bottle and your bitters are ready to use.
This recipe calls for regular shaking of the infusion - this is where I add the majority of my magic to the recipe. As I revisit my concoction to shake it daily, I focus on adding the energy of happiness, health, and abundance for the new year in. I also did a ritual where I burned an orange candle that had been dressed with a powder made from the base ingredients over the jar to further empower the spell.
Cocktail bitters can be applied in various ways. They can, of course, be used in the creation of a cocktail but they can also be added to water or another beverage, or simply taken on the tongue. The bitter agents in this concoction will soothe minor stomach upsets while they liven your mood.
A few notes about the ingredients in this recipe: As always with recipes, the quality of the ingredients will affect the potency and flavor of your final product. It is important to use organic orange peel if you can for this recipe since pesticides tend to accumulate in the peels of the fruit. I used Wild Turkey 101 for the infusion but any overproof liquor will do. You could substitute another bittering agent for Wild Cherry bark, the original recipe called for Gentian root.
*non-medical

Hello Hello!
This is my third writing this because tumblr hates me.
Excuse my face in the picture I was trying to make my brother laugh! I am finally doing a vitamin infusion! My mouth tastes like pineapple juice but the (now finished) sucker helped tremendously. My upper arm is cold under the skin, but I cannot tell if it’s pain. I think it qualifies for a little of both. I started having tremors (fun!) a little after starting the infusion, but the nurses said that it was unrelated.
After this I get to go to a neuro appointment! I’ll do updates on how that goes aswell :)

I’ve been looking at the top of my hand lately due to the abrasion on my knuckles (from when I ate shit) and it’s made me really notice the IV marks from when I was getting infusion treatment.
I can’t seem to look away
the marks of slightly lighter discoloration the scarring that comes from being pierced by a needle repeatedly with a tube in your skin for days at a time repeatedly for months.
it’s been seven months since my last infusion and I can still see the marks.
It doesn’t really matter like unless someone was looking and knew what they were looking for it’s not like anyone would notice.
but I can’t stop noticing now

Do you know of any good uses for orange or clementine peels? This time of year my family tends to give and receive oranges/clementines, and I’d like some more fun uses for the peels other than stuffing them in the compost. I have some dried and ready to store. What do you think, should I use them in tea?
okay so I don't know about tea, because when you boil them in hot water, they will let out the bitterness, and it won't taste as much orange-y, but acidic and bitter. (EDIT: you can make tea if you just cut out orange zest and dry it! someone mentioned it in the comments)
I can think of few things you can do with orange peels:
make candied citrus peels (recipe)
cut out stars, moons and flowers and use them as holiday ornaments and decorations after they dry (they can last for a long time inside)
Tumblr media
put them in a jar and cover with vinegar to make orange-scented cleaning liquid
dry them up and keep them in a jar for future use (infusions or scent mixes)
Here's a link to other citrus tips I wrote
Here's a website with more ideas

adding coconut oil to fresh roses. I let this steep in the fridge for a very short period of time, then strain. I store the strained infusion in the fridge and then use it for salve based formulations. This preparation is used for Beach Rose Lip Tint.

How the fresh leaves of the tea plant are processed and their level of contact with oxygen determine resulting types of tea?
All tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, a warm-weather evergreen. During oxidation, tea leaves undergo natural chemical reactions that result in distinctive color and taste characteristics. Green tea is not oxidized at all—the leaves are steamed, rolled and dried while black tea is allowed to oxidize for two to four hours. Oolong tea falls somewhere between green and black teas, in that the leaves are only partially oxidized.
Tumblr media
Tea is grown in thousands of tea gardens or estates around the world, resulting in thousands of flavorful variations. Like wines, each tea takes its name from the district in which it's grown, and each district is known for producing tea with unique flavor and character. Tea is also divided by grades, determined by leaf size. Smaller sized leaves are used in tea bags while the larger sized leaves can be found in packaged loose tea.
Herbal teas do not come from Camellia sinensis, but are an infusion of leaves, roots, bark, seeds or flowers of other plants. They lack many of the unique characteristics of tea and are not linked with the research on the potential health benefits of traditional teas.
